The crew of the new TV Land comedy series Impastor transformed a stretch of 48th Avenue in Ladner Village this week to look like the ficticious town of Ladner, Oregon. Impastor stars Smallville’s Michael Rosenbaum as a gambling addict who steals the identity of a gay pastor in a small town in an effort to evade a loan shark. Impastor, which is set to premiere this summer, also filmed scenes in Lions Park.

The results from the last round of Delta’s dust monitoring program are in and some of the testing areas saw a significant decrease in the amount of coal in the samples. Last February, civic politicians approved the program that saw dust collected at five locations for onemonth periods. This was done four times throughout the year, with the last samples taken between Dec. 31 and Jan. 30. Monitoring stations were set up at the North 40, Kensington and John Oliver parks, just north of the Delta Golf Course and on Westview Drive in North Delta. The stations were set up a varying distances from rail tracks and the amount of coal detected in the dust collected varied from 35 per cent (0.33 milligrams a day of a total of 0.94 mg of dust) at the North 40 site to five per cent (0.01 mg a day in 0.20 mg of dust) at the golf course. All areas tested were well below the B.C. Air Quality guidelines for dust fall. The guidelines state that residential areas should see 1.7 mg or less of dust fall daily, and non-residential

Civic monitoring has shown that all areas tested were well below the B.C. Air Quality guidelines for dust fall. areas should not have more than 2.9 mg per day. There are no specific guidelines for coal dust. The municipality has seen a decrease in the coal dust readings at two of the locations — North 40 and John Oliver. The last two samples (January and October) had a significantly lower percentage of coal content than previous readings. Sean McGill, Delta’s human resources and corporate planning director,

reported the decrease could be due to wind conditions or dust suppression measures. “Since both the North 40 and John Oliver sites experienced similar significant reductions in the dust’s coal content, it is suspected that a regional change in operational or meteorological conditions occurred,” he said. McGill also noted the vast majority of the coal dust found in the samples was more than 10 microns

in diameter. Particles that are smaller than 10 microns are considered more hazardous to human health. “The results have been showing really minimal amounts,” said Delta CAO George Harvie. Metro Vancouver is also monitoring particulate matter at four locations in Delta. That sampling began last July and will continue for a year. microns in diameter and specifically coal dust particulate in the air. A University of B.C. student is also conducting his own study looking at coal dust emissions from transportation at John Oliver Park. In recent years, Westshore Terminals has upgraded its dust suppression system and coal trains are now subject to two dust-suppression sprays en route to the Roberts Bank terminal.

Mayor gets ‘nose-to-nose’ on trip to Ottawa BY

Lois Jackson says she prefers the direct approach when dealing with Ottawa. Delta’s six-term mayor was joined by Coun. Ian Paton, chief administrative officer George Harvie and fire Chief Dan Copeland on a four-day trip to the nation’s capital last week. Jackson said the group met with a number of minister and senior government staff to discuss various issues facing Delta, including the Terminal 2 expansion at Roberts Bank, funding for ongoing dredging of

the Fraser River’s secondary channels and Canada Post’s transition to community mailboxes. This is the fourth such trip in the last nine years. “We were very well received by everyone that we met,” Jackson said, adding Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay ensured everyone was well versed on Delta’s issues before the meetings. “They were very well informed about Delta,” she said. Jackson said there is a definite benefit to spending the time and money to meet with federal ministers and

staff in person. up meetings “Absolutely... in Ottawa and there is nothing the municipalmore important ity went on to than sitting nosereceive $30 to-nose with somemillion in grant one and asking, and alternate ‘Do you understand funding for nine what I’m telling projects. you.’” It hired the Mayor Lois Jackson said presame company Jackson vious trips helped again in 2010, the municipality but since then access federal funds for meetings have been set various capital projects and up through the combined while much of that money efforts of staff in both appears to have dried up, Jackson’s and Findlay’s there are different areas offices. with funds available. On the issue of funding In 2008, Delta paid a for maintenance dredging lobbyist $12,000 to set of local secondary chan-

Jackson said a full report on the trip to Ottawa should be presented at a Delta council meeting later this month.

Athena This gorgeous girl was surrendered to the shelter because her owner moved into a new house that couldn’t have dogs. When she was surrendered she had to be treated for a sore leg (cause from being bitten by the other dog in the household). Her leg is now healed and has no long term issues. Unfortunately the dog she lived with had serious dog aggression issues and so Athena had to defend herself a few times. Because of this she is weary of other dogs and should be the only dog in the household. As well, at this point she is not a “dog park” dog. Over time she may be able to have doggy friends but they would have to be a slow and controlled introduction so she only has positive experiences with other dogs. With people, Athena is affectionate and wants to be a companion. Cuddle time is her favorite part of the day! She is eager to go for walks and does need a bit of work on her leash walking. Athena should go to an adult only home (18+) and no other pets.

Huntington brings staffers to Victoria for Ready, Willing and Able initiative Inclusion B.C. launched a challenge last week calling on MLAs to hire people with developmental disabilities in their constituency offices. “I think it’s a great idea,” says Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. “People who have developmental disabilities can easily be employed to do needed office tasks with full competence. I know this because I have three employees who fall into this category.” In support of this initiative, Huntington invited her three employees to visit her office in Victoria last Thursday and introduced them in the legislature. The challenge, called Ready, Willing and Able, is part of a bigger goal of employing thousands across B.C. with developmental disabilities. Described as an avid outdoorsman with a real zest for life, St. Godard worked as a driver of a Red Cross vehicle during the war and received the Military Medal from King George VI for his bravery in rescuing both allied and German casualties on the front lines. He saw service in both Canada and England before serving in Italy with the Lanark and Renfrew Scottish Infantry Regiment. St. Godard joined the Delta Police Pipe Band in 1976 as a tenor drummer. An open house held last month at the Surrey Museum outlined an aerial pesticide treatment plan for Surrey and Delta to eradicate an invasive moth species. Over the past year, trapping and monitoring has shown a growing European gypsy moth population around 64th Avenue and 176th Street in Surrey and between highways 10, 99

and 91 in Delta. Last summer, 197 male moths were found in Cloverdale. The province considers the moth, also known as Lymantria dispar, to be a “threat to B.C.’s ecology and economy.” It says the presence of the moths “poses a quarantine threat and potential trade restrictions for products like Christmas trees, logs with bark, nursery plants, and challenges for transportation (trucks may need agricultural inspections).”

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has been issued a pesticide use permit to aerial spray 4,576 hectares in Surrey and 204 hectares in Delta. An additional 26hectare ground spray will be conducted on a rural property in Surrey. The ministry plans up to four applications of the pesticide, Foray 48B, between April 15 and June 30 this year. Each application will be completed before 7:30 a.m.

Parents chip in to reward boys for ‘playing better’ The South Delta United boys U14 soccer team chose a unique way of giving back to the community and the Delta Hospice Society is fortunate to be the recipient. This past season, the team took part in the Play Better program. It chose a goal of 140 completed passes per game and every time the team hit that target, the boys’ parents donated money to a charity of the boys’ choice. The boys chose the Delta Hospice Society and recently presented the organization with a cheque for $767. “We were very pleased with the outcome as the commitment to ‘playing

better’ took the emphasis off of win at all cost and made learning to play the right way the main focus,” says coach Rich Zahn. “It also helped introduce the boys to community awareness and maybe taught them a little about philanthropy.” “Soccer is such a part of the fabric of our community,” says Delta Hospice Society executive director Nancy Macey. “For the team to make a choice to give their hard earned funds to Delta Hospice says a lot about all the boys on this team. A big thank you to everyone involved in making this decision.”

Many girls and boys are impacted by serious illness and loss in their families. Increasing awareness and donations like this help youth access supportive services when there is a need. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I could have told them that for a fraction of the cost. Civic politicians received a report from the engineering department Monday night that summarized resident feedback on the Metro Vancouver transit and transportation referendum. Not surprisingly, 60 per cent of respondents indicated they’d be voting “no” while just 10 per cent were in the “yes” camp. The remaining 30 per cent didn’t specifically provide a voting preference, although the staff report states that many from this group also voiced concerns about the undertaking. The main reasons for voting “no” were familiar ones: a distrust of TransLink, opposition to another tax and concerns over the minimal improvements identified for Delta. The “yes” supporters most often cited the long-term benefits. The staff report also states the 60 per cent opposition registered in Delta is consistent with several recent polls conducted throughout the region, which begs the question: What was the point of municipal hall collecting the feedback? It appeared Delta was going to take a stance, like most other jurisdictions in the region have already done, after it heard from the people, but that didn’t happen when the report was discussed at the council table Monday. Given just 200 people provided responses, perhaps council members were concerned about basing a position on a return rate of less than one per cent. Or maybe it was the fact several respondents praised Delta’s approach of informing residents rather than campaigning for either the “yes” or “no” side. Whatever the case, and with all due respect, it doesn’t really matter what local politicians have to say on the matter, so the absence of a formal position is a bit of a moot point. Would voting patterns significantly change if Delta council had come out against the proposed tax or decided to endorse the initiative? I doubt it. At the end of the day, it’s up to individuals, who are already being bombarded with information and opinions from both sides, to cast a ballot. I’m not sure one more voice among all that noise is going to make much of a difference. Given all that, as well as the fact it cost about $5,000 to include Delta’s request for feedback along with the 30,000 utility bills, you’ve got to question the point of the whole exercise. Delta doesn’t get a vote, so it doesn’t need to gauge public opinion, and those that do get a say will be able to make their views known by returning their mail-in ballots.

Major real estate project to have impact on town cores IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Quick quiz: What was the largest real estate deal in the Metro Vancouver region in 2014? If you guessed one of the high tower hotels in Vancouver, you’re wrong. If you guessed some new mega office tower in Surrey, you’re also wrong. Think much closer to home... OK, it was the deal done by Tsawwassen First Nations for its mega malls — two in number and the largest combined mall in B.C. In terms of scale, they are slightly larger than Metrotown, bigger than CrossIron Mills in Calgary, which serves as the model for one mall, and in size together second only to West Edmonton Mall, the largest in Canada. Combined, they are 50 per cent bigger than Guildford and twice the size of Richmond Centre. The parking lots take up more than 100 acres and will accommodate about

8,500 cars. The bigger mall (Tsawwassen Mills) is being built by the Quebec Pension Plan and the smaller one (Tsawwassen Commons) is a joint venture of the Canucks’ owners and an investment group based in Calgary. So, you’ve got developers with very deep pockets and approaching $1 billion going into the construction. Coming to the mall near you will be a Walmart supercentre, a large Canadian Tire, a large Mark’s Work Wearhouse, a giant Rona, a Bass Pro Shops, many shoe and fashion clothing stores, a food court and dozens of manufacturers’ clearance centres — like you find enroute to Seattle. In all, there will be hundreds of new retail stores! For those who use Highway 17A, you have seen piles of sand gradually take on steel structures, and roads undergoing significant modifications. When done, the cars to and from will navigate Highway 17A with three lanes each way. The intersection of 56th Street and Highway 17A will pose some major congestion as there will be 16 lanes heading into the intersection — all controlled by a traffic light. No, there is nothing in the plans

for “flyover” from the highway into Tsawwassen. Imagine holding for the turn as the parking lot empties at the same time a ferry unloads. In November, Delta council engaged a consultant for about $40,000 to help figure out how to help the local retailers survive the coming challenge. The stated goal is to: “develop a strategy to support South Delta businesses and ensure their long term sustainability.” If this effort can push back the impact of a billion dollars in construction, plus another billion of start-up expenses, and something about two to three times the size of all retail in South Delta, then we have a winner! Whether considering Ladner or Tsawwassen, we need to prepare for the disappearance of many shops in our town centres. Survival will require some serious efforts to “theme” each town centre. If La Conner or Snohomish can successfully theme themselves, can Ladner do something similar? Might Tsawwassen brand itself based on our beach? Failing such efforts, we can look forward to empty stores, as your neighbours will be “off to the malls.”

MP Lawrence Toet, who on the question of supporting Bill C-51, offered these choices: “I agree with my MP Lawrence Toet. We must take additional action to protect Canada from terrorism” vs. “I disagree. Terrorists are victims too.” It was roundly ridiculed and inspired a number of imitations, my favourite being: “Either you abhor false dichotomies or you support terrorism!” Of course, there was the famous position on another bill by then-minister Vic Toews: “He can either stand with us or with the child pornographers.”

He hadn’t learned from former U.S. president George W. Bush who said, when some countries were reluctant to follow the U.S. into Iraq in 2003, that they could either be with the Americans or against them. Maybe this is the only way the current government can see things, with no options beyond the most simplistic, but surely we must expect more from the people running the country. As for Findlay, yes, I believe it’s good to achieve a balanced budget but there are real choices of when and how to do it. Howard Solverson

Many questions still to be answered about bridge, including absence of rapid transit Editor: Re: Tunnel replacement on track, March 27 First of all, kudos to Sandor Gyarmati for a well written state of the George Massey Tunnel replacement project article. It is good because it raises more questions that we in Delta need answers for. The concept photo jumps out as misrepresenting a proper proportionate footprint of the bridge. A few weeks ago we visited the project office in Richmond and were told there will

be at least eight lanes and probably 10 lanes. This concept really only looks like four, maybe six, lanes to us. And why is the project office in Richmond, not Delta? Gee, I guess the provincial government continues to not really invite input from our citizens who are most impacted by this bridge. “There’s no plan to build rapid transit for the structure right away...” Huh? The bridge is still seven years off, so when will rapid tran-

sit come to this area? Finally, the multi-milliondollar seismic upgrades of the tunnel from a few years ago do not meet modern standards? I guess the latest seismic standards recently set out in the province’s other projects, like proposed multi-billion-dollar dike upgrades, will only be good for a few years. And I guess we are still voting “no” in the transit referendum, especially with this bridge’s absence of rapid transit. Bill & Carol Jones

Gift of flowers has recipient ready to pay it forward Editor: I would like to thank a stranger for the lovely bouquet of parrot tulips last Saturday. One never thinks that sitting at a bus stop pretty much in the middle of

Editor: I recently received MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s regular mail-out. I usually just find the tone of these leaflets annoying, but this time I had to comment. It uses the false dilemma presentation that members of the current government have used before. Findlay offers us these choices on the importance of balancing the budget: “Yes — Canada must be fiscally responsible and have a balanced budget” or “No — It is not important to balance the budget.” I’m a little surprised she didn’t learn anything from

Over the course of my career as a police officer, I witnessed countless instances of violence against women. From harassment and stalking to assault and murder, women are too often the innocent victims of brutality, usually at the hands of intimate partners or family members. Even though I have retired from policing, I continue to work with different groups to carry on the effort of eliminating violence against women. Recently I was at an event to celebrate International Women’s Day and something struck me: there were virtually no men in attendance. I then began to think about other groups that I work with, and again, there are very few men present for the discussion.

The reality is about 75 per cent of the time men are the offenders, yet hardly any men participate at the grassroots level to solve the problem. While many men work at the government level in policy development, law reform and law enforcement, there are few that participate in communitybased domestic violence groups. We, as men, must be leaders in changing attitudes towards women. Most men I speak to are unequivocally opposed to violence against women. We need those men at the table. We need those men to demand zero tolerance in their social networks. We need those men to stand up, speak out and be a part of the change. Violence against women is not a woman’s problem. It is a man’s problem that can only be solved with equal participation and support from both genders. We need more men to declare themselves as feminists

— defined as the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social and economic equality to men. A World Health Organization Report stated that violence against women is not only a global public health problem, but a violation of women’s basic human rights. On a global scale, violence against women is a systemic issue that transcends economic status, cultural values and religious beliefs. While Canada has written directly into the Charter and Criminal Code a formal intolerance of gender-based violence, the problem persists. It is within the gap between our laws and our actual rates of domestic abuse where our work, as Canadian men, begins. Irish statesman Edmund Burke said: “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” As men, we need to stand up and be visible in our opposition to gender-based violence and

Violence against women is not a woman’s problem. It is a man’s problem that can only be solved with equal participation and support from both genders. discrimination. We must raise our sons to treat women with dignity and respect, and we must instill in our daughters not only the expectation of basic human rights, but the understanding that her destiny will not be limited by her gender. To all of the women and men working towards a world free of gender-based violence, thank you. It is my hope your work inspires others to stand up against violence against women. Re-view Easter Today I am looking at Easter Sunday through Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. They serve as lenses, like the ones the optometrist used to correct my vision. “Alleluia, Jesus is risen!” needs to be understood by the events that preceded the day that Jesus rose from the dead. Thursday is when we remember Jesus having “The Last Supper” with his disciples. Since there was no household servant in the rented facility, Jesus washed the feet of those at table. “A new commandment I give to you; to love one another as I have loved you.” Mandatum is Latin for command, and that is the origin of the name of the day. Love is to be expressed through service. He left a meal by which to remember him; the blessed and broken

bread and poured-out wine a foreshadowing of the abuse and death he would suffer at the hands of those in power, after being betrayed by his friends. Good Friday continues with suffering and a lament from Psalm 22, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” What happened on these days is referred to as The Passion of Christ, revealing the great love and total commitment God has for Creation — to reconcile all things and people to Godself. But before we get to The Feast of Easter, we are invited to The Fast of Good Friday, the day death died. The goal of optometry is that my glasses will give me the freedom to see clearly. Looking at Easter through the days before it, in my opinion, does the same.

Art pops up in Tsawwassen

Local painter Jeroen Vermeulen set up a temporary art gallery for some of his work at the former C’Est Moi store location at Tsawwassen Shopping Centre this week. His sister-in-law Henriette Letschert had to close her store after a cancer diagnosis and asked him to put up some paintings in the space during the final days of the lease, which ended on Wednesday. It received such a positive response that the shopping centre owner offered to allow it to remain for longer. Vermeulen said the paintings will stay up until Monday.

Sidekick tackles The Drawer Boy The Sidekick Players Club will begin a threeweek run of Michael Healey’s The Drawer Boy next Thursday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. The Drawer Boy began in the summer of 1972 when a group of actors headed to Clinton in southwestern Ontario to interview local farmers and their families to learn about life in a rural community. After several years of research by the students and their teachers, The Farm Show was created. The actors attempted to dramatize what they had learned in a daily improvisational session using the content that had come directly from the farmers they had interviewed. Word about the show spread, its popularity grew and finally the show was written down on paper. The first shows didn’t have costumes, lights or sets and weren’t even presented in a theatre. They were held in a barn and used hay bales as seats.

While acting at the Blyth Festival, Michael Healey met with many local farmers who had inspired The Farm Show. Healey could not believe the impact those actors had on the community and decided to write The Drawer Boy. Over 25 years later, The Drawer Boy premiered at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto. The play has received international acclaim and has been translated into German, French and Japanese. It has won the Governor General’s Award for Drama and the Governor General’s Literary Award, among many honours. The Drawer Boy is a touching story about loss and love, told with humour yet it deals with serious issues such as the topical one of care giving. Miles arrives at a farm where the mentally challenged Angus and his long-time caregiver, Morgan, live and work. The play is not just

about farm life; in fact, the only insight the audience gets about farm life comes indirectly each time Morgan sets a bizarre task for the farm rookie Miles to fill his day. The play is about interpreting reality through storytelling and the effects it can have on lives. Carroll Lefebvre, assisted by Todd-Elliot Gates, directs the Sidekick production, which stars newcomer Pat Truelove (Morgan) along with Gerry Park (Angus) and Jacob Rushton (Miles). All cast and crew are Deltans. The Drawer Boy runs April 9 to 25. There will be performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. as well as 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, April 12 and Sunday, April 19. It is bistro theatre with limited seating, so reservations are highly recommended. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for seniors (60+) and students. To reserve, call 604-288-2415.

The church’s community choir, along with the Trinity Community Choir from Point Roberts, is putting on a tribute concert titled ExtrABBAganza! “It’s going to be really fun,” says St. David’s Community Choir director Lesley Sutherland. “These are songs that people grew up with.”

Sutherland, an arranger and composer, took ABBA songs, looked at the band arrangements and the vocals and turned them into three-part harmonies — soprano, alto and bass. Her choir has been practicing through January and February. “It’s been fun to rehearse such happy music during such a dark time of year.” Along with approximately 40 to 50 singers, there will be a full band performing at the tribute concert.

Heart of the Mayan world

Colonial capital Antigua is Guatemala’s World Heritage city BY

CHRIS MILLIKAN

Optimist contributor

Cruising through the Panama Canal to San Diego offers us a string of riveting Central American excursions, including a memorable daytrip from Puerto Quetzal to Antigua. With other early birds, we disembark the Veendam, stream past marimba musicians and through a handicraft marketplace to our waiting coach. “Welcome,” greets guide Karen, “today we’ll visit our colonial capital in the central highlands, heart of the Mayan world.” Ninety minutes of rolling countryside, lush forests and distant volcano views bring us to Guatemala’s World Heritage city. Passing several earthquake-damaged buildings, our walk winds along narrow raised sidewalks and crosses cobbled streets bustling with pedestrians and traffic, including tuk-

tuk taxis. Smiling villagers loaded with hand-woven textiles, musical instruments and jewelry approach us to sell their wares. Purple-blossomed jacarandas shade the plaza where Church of Mercy stands unscathed. Two short bell towers flank its whitefiligreed, lemon yellow façade. Atop, we sight San Pedro Nolasco, 13th-century founder of this Catholic order. This was Antigua’s first monastery. Inside, we learn Mercedarians helped heretics escape the Spanish inquisition and later supported families of convicts. In turn, appreciative prisoners created the mosaics still decorating stout interior columns. The luxurious sanctuary and cloister were built with wide arches to better withstand earthquakes, such as the one that destroyed 3,000 buildings in 1717. Heading onward, we

notice religious sculptures inside off-street enclosures. “Those are carried during Holy Week,” Karen explains. “From Ash Wednesday to Good Friday, a stream of processions parade along this street which is carpeted with flowers and coloured sawdust.

“It sometimes takes over a hundred men to shoulder some of the enormous floats.” We soon pass under the 17th century Santa Catalina Arch, a covered overhead passageway built to protect reclusive nuns from public view. Saint Joseph Cathedral

stands in baroque splendor. Constructed originally in 1554 and destroyed repeatedly by earthquakes, only the front portion remains; skeletal ruins behind recall its original immensity and grandeur. Exiting past 17th-century university buildings, we enter the grounds of Santo Domingo Monastery founded in 1538. Abandoned for centuries after an earthquake, it once boasted two grand towers with 10 bells. Its fountain survives in the refurbished courtyard. Because much of this city twice suffered similar destruction, authorities moved the capital to Guatemala City in 1776. Part of the demolished monastery has been transformed into today’s Hotel Casa Santo Domingo. Seated at tables amid floral gardens, we enjoy a typical Guatemalan lunch of rice, black beans, chicken, beef, fresh guacamole and hand-

made corn tortillas. Restored monastery treasures recovered from rubble fill an onsite art gallery. After admiring this collection of religious art and artifacts, we stroll gracious grounds where stands a prominent Ceiba tree. Mayans considered this the tree of life, its magnificent branches forming crosses that show the way. Spanish priests utilized their lore to promote Christianity. And proving a different delight, the Jade Museum offers visitors an overview of Mesoamerican jade. Here, an archaeologist discusses 3,000 years of its importance to cultures as far away as Costa Rica and southwestern Mexico. 12 tips to make exercise a habit p.j. wren

Well on Your Way Habit. It is defined as “a regular tendency or practice, one that is hard to give up.” Things like caffeine, to brushing your teeth, to sit-

ting on the couch and binge watching House of Cards are all habits some people have (and by “some people” I really mean me). Exercise, however, is not usually a habit that a lot of us have, but it is something that most of us strive for. Moving your body can help you stay above ground longer, while also giving you that extra spring in

your step — something that we all desire. Exercise, it’s a great habit to have. If you lack exercise as one of your habits, I suggest you start implementing one, or all, of the following tips: Start small. Begin with something that is super easy so it can be done on a consistent basis. For instance,

focus on 15-minute workouts before that half marathon. If the task, or goal, is too big, you will give up before you even get going. Commit. Commitment is hard, but if you want fitness to become a habit then you need to buck up and commit. Join a fitness class, hire a personal trainer or buy some exercise DVDs. Fitness buddy. Once you

Now that he is full-time in the Lower Mainland, Ladner lacrosse standout Logan Schuss will be more involved working with local teams during the coming season.

Homecoming for Ladner lacrosse star Logan Schuss to make his home debut with Vancouver Stealth on Saturday after being traded BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Logan Schuss is looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces on a regular basis at the Langley Events Centre. The 24-year-old from Ladner will be making his home debut for the Vancouver Stealth Saturday when the Edmonton Rush visit Langley at 7 p.m. Schuss was dealt Tuesday by the Minnesota Swarm for Johnny Powless in a huge exchange of young stars at the National Lacrosse League trading deadline. The deal not only allows the high-scoring lefty to continue his career at home, it makes life a whole lot easier. The regular commute to Minnesota had been a challenging one since Schuss started a full-time job at Deltaport in September. He began the current season on the club’s ‘holdout list’ while in the midst of a probationary period at work. Even when he was able to continue playing, Schuss couldn’t make practices and often was on a tight travel schedule. In one instance, he arrived 45 minutes before a game at New England. Disappointed he couldn’t make a greater commitment to the franchise, Schuss met with Swarm owner and governor John Arlotta a few weeks back. It was agreed a potential trade to Vancouver

would be ideal. “When I started the job in September, I didn’t know how heavy the commitment would be and how much heavier it would become with lots of different parts to it,” said Schuss. “I had missed a lot of stuff with the Swarm and didn’t want to be known as that type of guy. At the same time, work comes first and they have been very understanding. The Stealth had pegged Powless as their franchise player after accquiring the Mohawk nation star from Rochester. However, the opportunity to get a local talent who earned NLL rookie-ofthe-year honours last season, was too good of an opportunity to pass up. “We are ecstatic to bring Logan home to Vancouver,” said Stealth president and general manager Doug Locker. “The opportunity to add a player of his caliber brings an additional goal scorer to a lineup that we already like, and the fact that we can bring a prominent BC player home to represent his local team makes it all the more special.” Since the deal was announced, Schuss has been flooded with messages from friends, family and the entire lacrosse community. He looking forward to seeing many of them at Stealth home games. “When I did come to play back home, it was

crazy the amount of people who came out, just a lot of friends and Delta kids too. I tried to acknowledge all of them. It would be nice if we can build a buzz out here in Ladner about Stealth games and hopefully in New West too where I now play senior ball. “I’m excited to start this new lacrosse journey in my home province and look forward to many familiar and new faces in the stands.” Schuss also announced his job will prevent him from pro field lacrosse this summer for the Ohio Machine. Instead, he will play his first full season in the Western Lacrosse Association with the New West Salmonbellies and also work as an assistant coach with two teams he grew up playing for — the Junior “A’ and Intermediate “A” Delta Islanders. “I usually was able to play seven or nine games so I’m looking forward to a playing an entire season in New West,” said Schuss. “I had talked to (Islanders head coach) Greg Rennie about my interest in coming back and helping out. “I’m looking to not only passing on my professional knowledge but also talking to the younger guys about my experience in university ball as well. Schuss earned a full-ride scholarship to Ohio State University where he graduated as one of the program’s all-time great players.

Royals earn promotion to VMSL 1st Division Senior men’s soccer team now preparing for opening round of Provincial “B” Cup playdowns in Campbell River BY

CURT MORGAN

Optimist contributor

South Delta Royals of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL) wrapped up an impressive regular season by capturing first place in Division 2B with a record of 15 wins, 5 draws and 2 losses. The title will see the club through to the first division next year, VMSL’s second tier. “Being part of a team that gets promoted is always something special” said Poul Dempster, centre back and team MVP as voted on by the players. Simply “everyone played their part in a family oriented environment, fuelled by a willingness to win and compete for the guy beside you,” Dempster went on to say. Starting in the back, goalkeepers Curt Appleby and Kyle Forbes combined for eight shutouts in the 22 games. Both standing tall to preserve or win games. That’s also a testament to the strength of the back line, which conceded only 21 goals the entire season.

Out and out central defender, big Tyler Huculak demonstrated extreme patience, winning every ball that came his way, even chipping in with a couple goals. Rounding out the outside backs were captain Cam ‘Snake’ Gardner, Sean Sullivan, Mitch Platt and Kevin McDonald. That was crucial as the team averaged just over two goals a game. Leading the way was Matt Rota with 12. Followed closely by Mitch Norris, young guns Ryan Rogers, 19 year-olds James Millar and German import Jens Boeke, who will return home shortly. Bringing stability to the centre of the pitch, Dylan Hughes, Barry Hartman and Norris played together flawlessly either controlling the ball to slot forwards Justin Frey and Rota, or spraying the ball out wide to the wingers that includes Nick Loney, Mike Stewart, Rogers, Millar and Boeke. Depth was essential for the squad which had multiple skilled players for every position. It was no easy task for manager Alex Elsey, who

a spot in BC Soccer’s Keith Millar Cup, Men’s B Provincial Cup playdowns. With the draw that was held Monday, it was determined the team will be crossing the Strait of Georgia to Campbell River on April 11 They will be taking on Cermaq City F.C., part of the Vancouver Island Soccer League’s Division 3A Champions. “The culture (Elsey)

created was nothing short of brilliant, promotion was achieved and lifelong friendships were made”, added Dempster when talking about his coach. The team is just one part of South Delta FC that is made up of roughly 60 players, boasting three teams in the VMSL. There is a club affiliated team that fields players looking to make their way up to the

first team. And one in the third division, who after playing together for the first time this year, will be focusing next year in the same division in hopes of winning promotion. The club will be looking to make new additions for next year’s campaign to strengthen the core and anyone that is interested in playing is welcome to inquire.
