Deficit won’t impact classroom
Delta school district is facing $2 million shortfall for next year, but any proposed cuts won’t affect students BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
No cuts impacting the classroom are planned as the Delta school board faces a $2.06 million budget deficit for the coming school year. Unlike many previous efforts to balance the books that have seen reductions in teachers, educa-
tion assistants, custodial staff and librarians, the proposed budget for the 2015-16 school year doesn’t contain layoffs or other tough measures that have upset education stakeholders in the past. District secretary-treasurer Joe Strain told the Optimist this week that while it’s not necessarily a “good news” budget, it can’t be described as a bad year either.
“Relatively speaking, although unfortunately we’ve become somewhat acclimatized to this sort of thing, it’s not a bad budget. We think it will have limited impacts,” said Strain. Some of the drivers that resulted in a deficit this year include the district having carried forward a $1.5 million shortfall from the 2014/15 budget, increased teacher
and education assistant staffing requirements as well as inflationary pressures on employee benefits and utility costs. An increase in per-pupil funding and an earlier allocation of one-time funds from the Ministry of Education will be combined with higher than projected revenues from the international student program, increased revenues
from continuing education and higher investment income to help offset the deficit. The district also plans to carry forward the $1.5 million from the previous deficit. The proposed budget has few reductions at the administration level that total over $100,000, See BUDGET page 3

Ladner’s Kim Steinke is getting ready to embark on a whole new chapter in her life. She recently left her lucrative position as an accountant for a downtown company and is getting ready to move to Guatemala where she will serve as a missionary. Steinke said she was introduced to the region on a high school trip to Nicaragua. The Delta Secondary grad said that trip planted the seed that grew into a passion for helping those in need in developing nations. “Christmas was never the same after that,” she said, adding it was difficult to reconcile North American traditions of making a wish list with what she saw there. “I gave a kid a toy and it was the first toy he’d ever had. He was four years old and had never had a toy before,” she remembered. When she got older, Steinke started going on mission trips with the Evangelical Church out of Kelowna. Every time she returned she said it became harder and harder to reconcile her life in Vancouver with what she encountered on her trips. At home she had what is considered a good job with a large company, she had an office overlooking Vancouver’s waterfront and an Olympic Village condo. In Guatemala, many families live in squatter villages and survive on meager incomes. As well, on one trip a

The couple is now engaged and Steinke is moving to Guatemala on April 24, just over a week before their May 2 wedding. After the wedding, the couple will head to Texas for missionary train-
BUDGET from page 1 while technology maintenance supply costs are to be reduced by over $22,000 because the district has newer technology and equipment. Other savings will come from eliminating an energy specialist manger position and efficiencies in the con-
tinuing education and international student programs. As far as the provincial government edict that school districts reduce their administration costs, Strain said that process is separate and not included in the operating budget. He also noted the district
ing and then they will settle into their new life in Villa Nueva, a suburb of Guatemala City. Steinke said she will be able to use some of her accounting skills in her new position. She will help with some of the administration for the mission, Servants, Inc., and will also be involved with a program that provides micro-loans to single mothers.
The loans will help women start a home-based business and will also teach them the financial skills to run the business, pay off the loan and provide for their family.
Her fiancé, Jon Pelen, grew up in a children’s home in Guatemala and works for Servants, Inc. as a liaison between the mission and the people it is serving.
has already undertaken initiatives to save on administration and energy costs that it might be able to apply toward the directive. Strain said student enrollment decline has not been as bad in the last couple of years, with a decrease projected to be less than 100 next year, which obviously helps the bottom line. Funding from the prov-
ince has been a never-ending issue for school boards, but Delta, which faced a $3.2 million budget shortfall last year, won’t be lobbying with the B.C. School Trustees Association for more money by next year. That’s because the majority of the board earlier this month voted in favour of a motion by trustee Dale Saip to give the association one-
year’s notice to pull Delta’s membership. As a result, the district could conceivably use the $60,000 membership fee for other purposes in a following budget. The pubic can provide input on the budget at the board’s next meeting, set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21 at its Ladner headquarters.

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was at Ladner Harbour this week to announce federal funding to benefit harbour operations. Joined Tuesday by representatives from the Corporation of Delta, Fisheries and Oceans Canada and members of Ladner Fishers Committee, Findlay announced that the derrick will be replaced and electrical system upgraded at Ladner Harbour. The derrick is the crane used by fishermen as well as other harbour users for loading and unloading. Last fall, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced an additional investment of $5.8 billion to build and renew infrastructure across the country. Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard will receive $551 million, which includes $288 million for improvements at small craft harbours.

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announces federal funding while at Ladner Harbour Tuesday. “Once this work (at Ladner Harbour) is complete, fisherman will benefit from a safer and more efficient working environment,” said Findlay, the minister of national revenue. “This funding is part of our government’s ongoing commitment to support harbours, local economies and foster job creation. “Ensuring the small craft harbours, such as here in Ladner, are kept in good operating condition, this not
only benefits those who use them but also the communities where they are located.” Ladner Fishers Committee co-chair Jim Nightingale noted improvements will be seen in the day-to-day-operations at the harbour by those who depend on it. A dollar figure on the upgrades isn’t being released until the project has gone out to tender and a successful bidder is identified.

Intruder takes the time to have a bath Homeowner believes suspect used pass code for electronic lock on front door to gain access while she was away
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • April 6, 11:52 a.m., 1700-block of 55th Street: Complainant claimed he was in the park and a male working in the area took out a long pipe and made a vague threatening statement before leaving the park in his pickup. Police located the vehicle and initiated a stop. The suspect was cooperative with police and indicated he had broken his rake while doing volunteer cleanup work in the park and adamantly denied any threats to anyone. Police located the broken rake and the threat complaint could not be substantiated. • April 7, 7:33 a.m.,
5300-block of Upland Drive: Complainant reported a suspicious male going through her garbage outside her residence. Police attended and located the suspect who was collecting bottles to recycle. The complainant indicated she was new to Delta and was not familiar with the concept of “binners.” She also indicated the suspect was not on her property but going through the garbage in the street. The suspect was cooperative with police and left when sent on his way. • April 7, 12:31 p.m., 1900-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that her vehicle front passenger window was smashed while left in the church parking lot for about an hour and that her purse containing cell phone, passport and credit cards stolen. The complainant cancelled all documents and cards with authorities. No suspects. • April 10, 2:01 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: A business reported a female was observed selecting various small cosmetics and attempting to leave without paying. When
confronted by staff, the suspect fled in a black sporty hatchback. The suspect is described as 5’ 10”, medium build, sandy blond hair, wearing jeans and a black jacket. Video surveillance to be examined for possible identification of the suspect. • April 10, 9:32 p.m., 200-block of Murphy Drive: Complainant reported her home was entered sometime during the past few days while she was out of town. The suspect left the lights on, the tub full of water and used a towel. The complainant had purchased the home two weeks prior and believes the suspect entered the home via the electronic lock on the front door using a pass code. Lock is scheduled to be changed. Police to follow up with real estate agent and previous homeowner. • Overnight on April 1314 there were four incidents of thefts from vehicles in the 65th Street/3rd Avenue area in which vehicle windows were broken and the vehicles rummaged

through. In three of the four occurrences, the owners had left their garage door remotes in the cars and the garage doors were used to open garages and steal tools, sporting goods and other items. Delta police are reminding the public to remove all valuables from vehicles and that garage door openers can give thieves easy access to your garage and in turn your house. Ladner • April 7, 11:07 a.m., 3600-block of Arthur Drive: Report received of a driver swerving onto the shoulder twice and nearly colliding with a telephone pole. The vehicle appeared to have already been in an accident with the rear window smashed, the back dented and the taillight hanging off. Police attended the residence of the vehicle owner but were unable to make contact and the vehicle was unable to be located while being driven. A letter was sent to the registered owner of the vehicle warning him of the consequences of any
future driving conduct. • April 7, 12:01 p.m., 4800-block of Harbour Stroll: Complainant reported she left her vehicle in the parking lot while she was in the park. When she returned the driver’s window was smashed and her purse and contents were stolen. Complainant advised to cancel all cards and contact ICBC. The driver’s licence information will be added to the police database. • April 9, 2:25 a.m., Highway 17: Police received a report that a vehicle heading north was swerving all over the road, crossing into both lanes and at one point leaving the roadway. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was showing symptoms of possible intoxication and provided breath samples. As the samples read “Pass,” a police officer trained in screening for substances other than alcohol conducted a test and concluded the suspect was under the influence of a drug. Police issued a 24-hour suspension and the vehicle was towed from the scene. A friend
drove the suspect home. • April 9, 11:56 p.m., 5000-block of 36th Avenue: Witness observed a darkcoloured pickup truck containing four or five young males attempting to steal a blue Ford Ranger by winching it across a field from where it was stored. The vehicle became stuck in the ditch and the winch cable snapped. The males then fled the area. Police attended and found the vehicle in the ditch, having damaged a water pipe and two mailboxes. No suspects and a patrol of the area proved negative. • April 10, 4:44 p.m., 5000-block of 47th Avenue: Police responded to a report of a youth who had caused mischief in the park washroom. The youth admitted to police he had knocked over a partition wall as well as damaging the toilet, claiming that he was depressed at being teased at school. Investigation found the school and home are dealing with youth’s issues. Police advised that possible charges or alternative measures will likely result from the mischief.

The Delta Fishing Heritage Society is looking to build its membership. The society, which has a meeting scheduled for Sunday in Ladner, aims to promote heritage from the fishing industry’s point of view, said president John Stevens, an active fisherman. The group has ideas about creating a Fraser River estuary interpretive centre as well as a fishing museum. “I think both of those things would really be a tourist attraction,” said Stevens. The interpretive centre would focus on the estuary and its value ecologically and culturally and what the Fraser River means to the people, he said. The society has a couple of old fishing boats it’s looking to restore and display somewhere in the municipality, he said, adding it would also like to

MURPHY’S LAW When I talk Delta issues with people these days, the one topic that comes up more frequently than any other is the mall construction that’s taking place at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Intrigued by the idea of a pair of shopping centres equal to the size of Metrotown being dropped on their doorstep, the first question invariably is about potential tenants, but not far behind comes doubts about whether malls of this magnitude can be financially viable in what’s a relatively remote location. “Are people actually going to drive all the way out there just to shop?” That kind of rhetorical question is often times followed by a healthy dose of skepticism, primarily based on the premise the site is simply too far removed from Metro Vancouver’s population base. I’m certainly not a shill for the developers, but I regularly find myself playing devil’s advocate in these discussions, and when I do, I rely on two indisputable facts to bolster the argument that Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons aren’t that much of a stretch of the imagination. If you’re at all familiar with outletstyle malls — and let me assure you that I am — you’ll know they’re typically located on cheaper real estate removed from city centres. Pick a major city along the West Coast and this formula has been implemented. I was in the Palm Springs area for the first time last month and like many who visit the desert, I stopped in at the outlets at Cabazon, a collection of about 200 stores in a town of just 2,500 people. More noteworthy than the fact it was busy on a Wednesday morning is that the outlets are about 30 kilometres west of the city of Palm Springs and about 60 kilometres from La Quinta. Incidentally, they’re on the Morongo Indian Reservation. Beyond the assertion that distance isn’t necessarily an impediment when bargains are at stake, I also raise the point that both Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group, the developers that have partnered with the TFN, have extensive experience with these kinds of projects. As well, I offer the argument that Walmart, which has had some success in the retailing game, would only open a supercentre in these parts if it believed Tsawwassen Mills was going to drive substantial clientele its way. South Delta on its own couldn’t support such a store. I certainly don’t have a crystal ball, but the idea of two large-scale malls at the edge of a metropolitan area is far from a doomed concept.

COMMUNITY COMMENT The Delta Town & Country Inn played host to the 41st annual Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast a few weeks ago. Initially started by some of Delta’s leaders in 1974, and later organized by the Delta Chamber of Commerce, the event is now hosted by a committee of six — Greg Muirhead, Linda Frost, Dianne Hansen, Dale Saip, Gatlin Saip and Lynn McIntosh. I’ve had the pleasure of participating in some and attending almost all of those 41 Saturday morning gatherings. The breakfast fare and service were first class and the organizing committee did an outstanding job. Due to the longevity of the event, it was interesting to note a third generation led by Gatlin Saip is taking an active leadership role. As always it was a pleasure to chat with our current and past political leaders, including Dr. Stan Wilbee, former Delta alderman and MP, at this well-attended social
venue. The organizers have never failed to introduce a high profile and captivating speaker as the centrepiece of the morning. Such was the case this year with the introduction of Robert G. Kuhn, president and chancellor of Trinity Western University. I’ve had more than a passing interest with this private learning institute over its legal issues with the B.C. College of Teachers and more recently over the dispute with the Law Society of B.C. in the eligibility for enrollment in the university’s faculty of law. Kuhn is a graduate of UBC school of law and a practising lawyer for 34 years, successfully leading Trinity Western University’s legal team through the Supreme Court of Canada. Many in the audience aspire to leadership or had the opportunity or are in leadership roles, so Kuhn’s presentation of “leaving a leadership legacy” struck a chord with many. Kuhn said he studied leadership most of his life, not that he aspired to that calling but because he was intrigued by what made leaders great and what makes the ordinary extraordinary. “The more you want to be a leader, aspire to be in leadership and pursue it, the less likely you will be a good leader,” Kuhn

hypothesized to the crowd. “We are prone to seek after popularity, power, prestige, position and even profit that may be gained through leadership. The true foundation of leadership is the motivation to serve others.” As Bob Collier, a highly regarded former Delta administrator once said to me, which still resonates today, “The servant shall be the leader” as the person we trust and follow. This was the theme of Kuhn’s message, which registered profoundly with those present. As he further stated, “Leadership flowing from a servant heart cannot be self-serving. Leadership is a trust belonging to others who follow. It must be continually protected, nurtured and as its caretaker, must be constantly subject to accountability.” Many aspiring and current leaders possess an intuitive sense of Kuhn’s definition of leadership. His eloquent articulation aptly demonstrated how he, an “ordinary man,” has become an extraordinary leader. Mark your calendar for the next Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast. And a good night to you, Gatlin. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta and a practising mediator of civil litigation disputes.

the government is trying to push this law through Parliament in record time. I hope our MP, KerryLynne Findlay, notices that public opinion is changing rapidly. The more Canadians learn about what’s in this bill, the less they like it. Before Canadians knew what was in Bill C-51, 17 per cent opposed it; three weeks later, we found out and now 50 per cent oppose it. Here is why: If this bill passes, sensitive private information that can reveal everything from our financial status, to our medical history, our sexual orientation, and even our religious and political beliefs would be shared between no fewer than 17 government agencies and even handed to foreign governments.
Victims of such privacy breaches wouldn’t even be informed and would never know. In effect, the government could spy on anyone, at anytime, and none of us would even know when we’ve been subject to such an invasion of our privacy. Do we really want our federal government to create a shadowy and unaccountable secret police force that will trample on innocent citizens’ freedoms? The government has admitted Bill C-51 is fundamentally flawed, so they must withdraw the legislation and, instead, properly resource existing law. I encourage Canadians to learn more about how we can work together to stop Secret Police Bill C-51 at: StopC51.ca Edwin M. Hopkins
up for the harmful effects of adding a second terminal at Roberts Bank. The impacts that more development and more ships, trucks and terminal equipment have on the habitat for birds, whales, porpoises, seals, sea lions, salmon and other marine mammals cannot be mitigated by planting some eel grass a few kilometres away or removing and/or repositioning logs somewhere else; that is just nonsense. A second terminal is not required and the only things
the port should be focused on is the continued efficiencies on existing terminals throughout the Lower Mainland. Port expansion comes at too high a price for people and other living creatures. The willful blindness that is going on in that organization is very sad and I hope our politicians stand up for what is right for all life in the Lower Mainland. B.C. already has sufficient terminal capacity for our boom-bust economy. Teresa Jones

Editor: It is very alarming that Port Metro Vancouver is busy getting ready to expand its footprint in Delta by doing all kinds of “mitigation” in surrounding areas when there has been no approval for a second terminal yet. The effectiveness of the mitigation is doubtful and looks more like a feel-good measure rather than a helpful one. While mitigation measures seemingly are better than nothing, it does not even come close to making
farm life. It is both funny and very touching. Kudos to the three performers, director Carroll Lefebvre and to all those who helped backstage. This is Sidekick’s 18th year of putting on quality plays in our community and we are fortunate to have them in our midst. Coincidentally, last

Editor: The new spying powers proposed in Bill C-51 are highly unpopular: 71 per cent of Canadians don’t want to trade their privacy rights to give spy agencies more power. Over 110,000 people have already spoken out against this reckless proposed legislation, turning CSIS into a “secret police” force with little oversight or accountability. It is dangerous, opening the door for violations of our charter rights, including censorship of free expression online. Yet this would be an unproductive addition to existing law, leading to dragnet surveillance and information sharing on innocent Canadians that even Stephen Harper has admitted is ineffective. To make matters worse,

Delta acts as major stopover for ‘peeps’ Hundreds of thousands of sandpipers pay visit on migration from South America to Alaskan breeding grounds ANNE MURRAY
BY THE BAY This is the time of year that over a million shorebirds visit local beaches as they head north for the nesting season. The smallest sandpipers, collectively known as “peeps,” are tiny birds, each weighing only as much as a granola bar. Individual birds are easily overlooked since their brownish-grey plumage blends with the mud. A large flock is much more noticeable, especially when it performs amazing aerial displays. Peeps fly 11,000 kilometres on migration from their wintering areas in South America to their breeding
grounds in Alaska, and the Fraser delta is one of only a few major stopovers en route. It is essential the mud and sand flats of Boundary Bay, Roberts Bank and Sturgeon Banks, the three main components of the outer delta, remain viable habitat. According to a 2014 study by Environment Canada and Bird Studies Canada, it is possible the entire Pacific Flyway population of western sandpiper and Dunlin may be found on the Fraser River delta during migration. The study authors calculated that 600,000 western sandpiper and 200,000 to 250,000 Dunlin, another sandpiper species, stop to feed just at Roberts Bank, with similar numbers occurring on Boundary Bay and Sturgeon Banks. Each bird may stay only
two to three days, foraging and roosting, before pressing on with its journey. Many other species of shorebird also stopover at these important habitats, most migrating northward in April and southward between July and October. Sandpipers feed by probing in the mud for small creatures or by sucking up biofilm from the surface. If disturbed, they try and resettle just a few metres along to resume their feeding. With the tide going out, the shorebirds become very spread out and distant, and can be difficult to observe. However, when the tide turns, the incoming water coaxes the feeding birds closer and closer to shore. With no more mud exposed, the birds sleep, preen and relax, restoring their energy for the kilometres to come.

A local container service company is once again taking a proactive approach to truck safety. For the third straight year, Tilbury-based Harbour Link Container Services Inc. invited Delta police’s commercial vehicle inspection unit to have a look at its trucks. Three days of random inspections this week were aimed at ensuring trucks are operating at the highest mechanical standards possible. Harbour Link has around 100 trucks accessing its site - about 30 owned by the company and the rest by owner-operators. The com-
pany deals with an average of 300 containers per day over a six-day workweek. Noting it is the only company in the province that invites such inspections, general manager Tim McGee said Harbour Link holds its drivers to a higher standard. “It helps them to realize that they need to make sure they do it because they don’t know when the company is going to pull their truck in. A lot of these guys live in North Delta and they understand too that having a commercial vehicle in good condition is important,” he said. Saying he’s also a Delta resident who is concerned about the safety of his community’s roads, McGee

Officer Nathan Porter inspects a truck. noted the company undertakes its own programs year-round to ensure trucks are safe, including driver education. As well, drivers must show what work they’ve
had done on their vehicles on a monthly basis. From time to time, they are also watched to see if they conduct pre-trip checks. The company also has decals placed on trucks indicating how long it’s been since it was involved in an accident or safety infraction. “The issues in the three years that I’ve been here have dramatically changed,” said McGee. “We’re not looking at serious infractions now. We’re looking at maybe smaller issues.” As far as most common mechanical problems, McGee noted brakes are the biggest safety issue, but they can include anything from cracked windshields to low tire pressure.

What happens to us when we die? Do we just cease to exist? Do we get reincarnated to take another lap? Do we live forever in heaven or hell? Everyone has an opinion, but how do we know? Jesus (who knows better than anyone on the subject) told a fascinating story that gives us a peek at what happens after death (Luke 16). There was a rich man who had it all and lived a life of luxury, and a poor, starving beggar, covered with sores, begging outside his gate. Both die. The beggar goes somewhere identified as at Abraham’s side. The rich man goes to Hades, a place of torment. Jesus emphasizes three points in his story: 1. There is conscious existence after death. They not only continued

to exist, they knew what was going on. 2. It matters where you go. There is a good place and a bad place, one that is pleasant and one you want to avoid at all cost. The rich man is in such agony he begs for the beggar to just dip his finger into water and come to him so he can lick the tiny bit of moisture off his finger. 3. The decisions we make in this life determine where we go in the next. This is a serious story warning us to make the right decisions in this life while there is still time. Jesus tells us how. “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24, NIV)

Opening the door to music
Among many other projects, Lesley Sutherland is choral director at St. David’s BY

T
sawwassen’s Lesley Sutherland has a lot on the go. The composer, conductor, writer and producer is the choral director of the St. David’s community and parish choirs. She also founded wonderchoir, a children’s choir, through Delta Parks, Recreation and Culture. Sutherland co-owns a sound studio (Fresh Air Audio in Vancouver) and performs as a singer/songwriter as well. “I never have the same day in a week, ever,” she says. You have to be very organized and have a handle on the details with so many projects on the go, she adds. “It is a lot of juggling. But it’s all things I’m extremely interested in and that are extremely important to me. I don’t find it hard to be motivated.” Sutherland, who has been working in the TV and film industry for the past two decades composing musical scores, has a degree in composition, something she’s been doing since she was a little kid. “My first love was composition - writing music.” Sutherland also co-created a CBC preschool TV series, See the Sea. She’s got two shows in development she’s trying to pitch.

Tsawwassen’s Lesley Sutherland says the St. David’s Community Choir is always accepting new members.
She started working as a choir director in her 20s and makes a point of making rehearsals fun. “I’m not a very serious choir director. My whole aim is, basically, I consider myself the doorway into music. If I can introduce somebody to music and
open that door, whether it be a six-year-old or an 80-year-old, it’s a huge privilege,” she says. “Just to open that door to people is huge.” While music can be scary, she maintains everyone can sing. “I think that it’s tremen-

Local churches are taking part once again in Lift Every Voice, a choir performance set for Sunday in Ladner. About 10 South Delta churches are involved, says Pat Rogers, who’s organizing the ecumenical event with Anna Krueger. Most of those will take part in the two massed choir
numbers, notes Rogers. “Everyone’s invited. You don’t have to attend a church to just enjoy some wonderful choir singing,” she says. The South Delta Ministerial sponsors the long-running annual event, which raises money for the Community Fund of Faith. The fund provides one-time financial assistance for needs such as housing, heat, hydro, emergency transpor-
tation and medication, says Debbie Mitchell, a committee member with the fund. Lift Every Voice takes place Sunday at 7 p.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave., Ladner. Admission is by donation. PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

dously freeing to sing. I think it’s a natural response to life. I think it’s a way to reach your soul, reach a deeper part of yourself.” Sutherland, who grew up on the North Shore and previously lived in Vancouver, has a husband and three daughters.
She notes the St. David’s Community Choir is always accepting new members and that no experience is necessary, just a love of music and a sense of humour are required. Rehearsals take place Thursdays from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at the church, 1115-51A St., Tsawwassen.
St. David’s is an energizing place to work, she says, describing it as a forwardthinking and communityminded church led by the Rev. Paul Woehrle. Her children’s choir starts again in September. Registration is done through Delta parks and rec.

Trio teams up for art exhibit Long-time guild members to display work at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen
BY
NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor
Three local artists whose work is increasingly recognized throughout the Lower Mainland present their latest paintings as the Company of Three at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen next week. Birgit Coath, Linda Bell and Nancy Dean are long-time members of the South Delta Artists Guild whose distinctive artistic styles and varied choices of subject matter, often reflecting their travels, have won them awards and exhibition space, including recognition by the prestigious Federation of Canadian Artists. Like so many artists, their childhood included discovering how coloured crayons worked and what fun paintbrushes could be. That early interest stayed with them, taking on more significance in their working lives as each gradually

carved out an additional artistic career. The recently retired Bell is a mixed media artist who says: “Now I have time to paint to my heart’s content.” And she does just that. Working primarily in acrylic collage, she has
received a number of awards, including second place in the 2015 Abstract Show of the Federation of Canadian Artists. She loves to play with pattern, line and value and to exaggerate or distort shapes in her abstracted and non-objec-
tive paintings. Travel, whether in Tibet or on the West Coast, plays an important role in the artistic life of Coath, who also had a childhood curiosity to see things not readily apparent, to find out why and how.
This creativity served her in the corporate world and as a garden designer, and then, as she gained the skills necessary to express herself through visual art, to become the artist she is today. Dean always thought she
would become an artist. Early interests led naturally to working with her hands - crafts, sewing projects, then to interior designing, at which she still works when not painting her award-winning pictures accepted in many juried shows. She particularly enjoys the challenges offered by city streets and buildings lit by the sun, or at night, when rain-soaked roads glow with reflected neon and traffic lights. Company of Three runs from Tuesday, April 21 to Sunday, April 26 at Gallery 1710, 1710-56th St. The gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and to 8 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception on Thursday, April 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. On Saturday, April 25, acclaimed English classical guitarist Louise Southwood will perform from 4 to 5 p.m. Entry is by donation, with $15 suggested.

Pair of Audis offer contrasting rides PHILIPRAPHAEL Staff Reporter
PRAPHAELRICHMONDNEWS.COM
E
ver thought about having a pair of luxury, “bookend” vehicles parked in your driveway? Sure you have, admit it. All you have to do is guess a few lottery numbers right — luckily, we’re not talking millions of dollars, but a decent executive’s take-home for a year — and the keys are as good as in your hands. But what would you choose? The logical way to go about would be to find two rides that have similar build qualities, but differing operating abilities to accommodate varying passenger and cargo loads, as well as the ability to handle a variety of terrain. So, when you put all of those parameters into the mix, you might just end up with a pair from Audi — in this case the A4 sedan and Q7 SUV. Think of it — the A4 would meet your intown needs heading to and from the office and a night on the town, while the Q7 could be pressed into service for that back-roads camping expedition, or more likely the inhospitable surroundings of the big box store parking lot on a Saturday morning. Both have plenty of European style, performance, quality and luxury.
■ Audi’s stable includes vehicles for just about any lifestyle and driving need, from the spacious Q7 SUV (left) to the A4 sedan which is available with the choice of two engines. Photo submitted
On the exterior, each has the now easily recognizable, deep trapezoid grille bearing Audi’s famous four, integrated rings, and tapered rectangular headlamp clusters. And both are equipped with the brand’s goalmost-anywhere, Quattro, four-wheel drive. Where they differ most, other than size and price, is in engines. The A4 is fitted with a variety of power plants, starting with the base model with a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder that develops 220 horsepower. A six-cylinder which produces 333 horses is available in the sportier, S4 version.
If you desire fuel economy, the base engine provides it with consumption of 9.9 litres per 100 km in the city, and 7.6 on the highway. While that may sound on the high side, remember Audi models in Canada all come equipped with four wheel drive which drives down efficiency, partially due to added weight. Under the Q7’s bonnet is a 3.0 litre, sixcylinder engine that delivers 280 horses and 296-pound-feet of torque that can vault it from zero to 100 km/h in a scant 7.2 seconds. Fuel consumption, as a result, is a tad on
the thirsty side at 15.2 litres in the city and 11 litres on the highway for a 100 km trip. Opt for the diesel version and you get more impressive torque numbers — 296-poundfeet — and a decent reduction in consumption — 12.6 and 8.5 litres respectively. On the cargo hauling side the Q7 has the most amount of stowage space in its class, according to Audi. Combined, the pair of base models would set you back a shade under $100,000. As a single, the A4 starts at $38,500, while the Q7 is $59,200. The choice is yours.

Better food, fitness are key p.j. wren
Well on Your Way I recently read a graph, released by the Annals of Internal Study, showing that a person could increase their life by seven years by simply staying in a normal weight category (assuming they don’t smoke). In their study they found that when a person’s weight goes from normal (which is classified as a body mass index of 18.5 to 24.9) to overweight (a BMI of 25 to 29.9) they would typically lose three to four years from their life. Increase their fat mass even more, to obese (a BMI of 30 or greater), and they have effectively decreased their life by seven years, or 61, 360 hours. Wow. Think of what you could do with seven years? So, how do you add those years and hours back into your life? Once sentence: better food and more fitness. You need to eat better and move more. But, you’re smart and I think you already knew that. It’s no secret that the only proven fountain of youth is a healthy diet accompanied by regular exercise. Now, the real milliondollar question is how can
you accomplish this task of living longer, but without having to live like a monk? How can you do all of this and still enjoy the good food and drink the world has to offer? Simple: Moderation and follow these three tips. First, eat like a nutritionist five days a week and then cut yourself some slack the other two.
It’s no secret that the only proven fountain of youth is a healthy diet accompanied by regular exercise. We all know it’s impossible to behave 24/7. We all have our vices. Mine are many and include spiced rum, cookies and pizza, and when I eliminate these completely from my diet I get super cranky (not great for my marriage either), and sooner or later (when I can’t take it anymore) I binge. Sound familiar? But if we eat well five days a week and do moderately OK for breakfast and lunch on the other two days, we will have allowed ourselves the ability to have our vices in our life for the evenings and not fret about it too much. Second thing, start prepping your food so it becomes as fast as the drive-thru. Use one day, or night, a week to plan what
meals you are going to have through the next five days and prepare what you can ahead of time. By doing this you are making it easier on yourself to eat better on those rushed days and nights when takeout, dinner from a box, or the drive-thru could happen. And finally, lift heavy things. OK, maybe not “things,” but lift dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, kettlebells, small children, your wife, your husband. Just lift them regularly and with good form and biology will reward you. Building muscle mass through strength training will spike our metabolism, making us better fat-burning machines, help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis, lower inflammation in the body (which is responsible for a whole host of diseases), control our blood glucose levels, our blood pressure and blood lipids levels. If done right, it can increase our cardiovascular fitness as well. • The Women’s Self Defense Workshop is back by popular demand. It will be offered one night only: Friday, April 24. True blue a treasured colour anne marrison
Green Room For many gardeners, true blue is one of the most treasured colours in flowers but it can be a fickle one to acquire unless you actually buy the plant in bloom in a garden centre. Even then, hydrangeas, for example, may not remain their original heavenly blue when they sample conditions in your home garden. Those beautiful blues of the mophead Endless Summer and its companions need acidic soil and if they don’t get it, next year’s petals will have turned purplish. Adding aluminum sulphate to their soil every spring is the usual way of maintaining blue in hydrangeas. There are other pitfalls too: many blues contain a hint of purple but are often described as blue perhaps because it mirrors catalogue and online descriptions. Also photos of blue flowers are not necessarily accurate. Nor are names. English Bluebells, for instance, are among those that are almost blue but not quite. For an easy way of gaining lakes of blue you can to turn to spring bulbs. Scilla
sibirica is a deep true blue dwarf long-flowering bulb that spreads fast under trees where grass is thin. It’s inexpensive and virtually all garden centres routinely offer it in fall. Chionodoxa forbesii is blue and white (comes in other colours too), but its cousin Chionodoxa sardinensis is a deep, startling blue and a very dwarf eager spreader with large globe-shaped seedheads so convenient to plant in other places too. Not widely offered but Garden-Import lists it some years. Rural gardeners who want a spring carpet of gentle sky-blue still turn sometimes to forgetmenots. Once the blue deluge is over, they wait for the heads to set seed, then yard the old plants out secure in knowing forgetmenots will reappear again next year. That’s the good news. The bad news is that successive generations develop smaller flowers and get weedier because they gradually revert to the wild form. When summer comes, one of the easiest-going blue explosions comes from Anchusa azurea (Alkanet). It produces a three-foot (one metre) long-flowering pyramid of intense blue that is said to bloom from June to September if you deadhead it. It’s ideal for gardeners
with dry sandy/gravelly/ rocky soil where it will perennialize and reportedly be almost impossible to remove. Unfortunately, it hates soggy clay and tends to die over winter if you don’t give it good drainage. It’s easy from seed, which you may have to get online. Anchusa capensis is a cousin and the one
where you can find seed in garden centres. It has paler but nice, blue flowers, is an annual and dwarfer at 18 inches (45 cm). Better known for intensely blue flowers are some of the gentians. One standout is Gentiana acaulis, a very dwarf trumpet gentian available most springs in garden centres. It’s a temperamen-
tal one, and soil recipes abound, but generally a sun/ shade mix of gently acidic soil with humus and grit is at least a place to start. Gentians are a huge tribe that come in a range of blues and a few which aren’t blue at all. Some beautiful blues may be found in seedgrown annuals. Much of the
seed, though, is often sold in mixes of colours these days. Varieties include larkspur, lobelia, delphiniums and nigella. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. Please add the name of your city or region.

MLA encourages aspiring artists to apply for scholarships
The B.C. Arts Council is seeking applicants for scholarships but aspiring artists must apply by the end of the month. “The B.C. Arts Council
Scholarship Program can provide significant funding for arts students in Delta,” says Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington. “I encourage any young or
new artists who are currently enrolled or planning to attend a post-secondary arts program to apply.” The program is designed to support the development
of B.C.’s future professional artists. The scholarship can provide funding of up to $6,000 per year to arts students. Applicants will be assessed on their portfolio
and the strength of their application. “I’m pleased to see that the province recognizes the necessity of supporting and investing in our arts
and culture sector,” says Huntington. The application deadline is April 30. For more information, visit www. bcartscouncil.ca.

The Great Spring Hoedown in support of Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Assn By Candice Miller, Executive Director It’s not every day that miracles happen, but when people and animals work together in a safe supportive environment a dreams can become a reality. Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association in Delta is a haven where children and adults with emotional, physical and cognitive disabilities, survivors of trauma and abuse and those with fragile medical diagnoses can experience true freedom and success on the back of their friend the horse. PPTRA is located at 3885 96th st, in a fully universally accessible facility with ADA ramps and power hoist to ensure the epitome of safety, quality programming equal access, offering awardwinning programs at a nominal fee to 100 clients each week. We are home to Canada’s 2011 Equine Shining Star POPTART as voted by Canadian Horse Journal and to the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s Rising Star 2010 PPTRA founder and Head Coach Candice Miller. Leaving behind wheelchairs, crutches, personal aides and the stigma attached to being “different”, riders mount up and ride as equals with their able-bodied peers. The over-all health benefits are many; we have seen children take their first unassisted steps after a riding session and speak their first words on their therapy pony. Check out volunteer opportunities and download new riders applications at www.pptra.org. PPTRA is a registered charity receiving no government support; we run on donations, fundraisers and sponsorships. Since established in 2008 with 1 pony, 1 coach, 1 volunteer and 5 riders, we now offer 11 equine therapists, 4 coaches serving over 100 riders weekly and 75 volunteers! Our mandated non-waitlisted program ensures children who require this form of therapy can receive it when they needed; the only program of this type in the province. Pony Pals is throwing a very exciting fundraiser in support of our Therapeutic Riding Association on Friday, May 22nd and we need everyone’s help to make it a great success!
The Great Spring Hoedown in support of PPTRA will continue to make dreams come true for our riders! Here’s how you can help: Come out and dance!! We have an amazing square dance caller coming to help us all have a great time. You (and your guests) don’t need any previous experience,
or even a partner. Doors will open at 6:30pm, with square dance instructions happening shortly after 7pm. Tickets are $20 each. There will also be a silent auction, door prizes and a special “Lucky Duckies” Raffle. Contribute a silent Auction item, or call to help sponsor the event, a rider, or a therapy pony!

4 Ways To Overhaul Your Skin Care for Spring! Spring is officially here - and after months of short days, cold weather and blustery skin-drying winds, your chapped and dull-looking winter skin is ready to renew and reawaken to its full spring potential! To help recover from the winter skin blahs, it’s time to swap out your cold weather beauty products with something that’s more suited to spring conditions. “Changes in weather and temperature inside and out of your home or office can wreak havoc on the skin, with the arrival of a new season it is the perfect time to reassess your skincare regime,” says Louise Dannhauer, Spa Time Operator and Esthetics teacher at Vancouver Community College. With that advice in mind, we have 4 tips to help your skin “spring” beautifully into the season ahead:
Blueberry Coconut Slimming Body Wrap Full body exfoliation followed by an organic infused blueberry slimming body wrap, stimulating scalp massage and hydrating coconut firming body massage. 90min $145 Mamma Mia! Package Hot stone back, neck & shoulder massage, spa pedicure and gel polish manicure SPECIAL $145 Beauty Renewal Package Microdermabrasion facial, 30min Time Out Massage and Hot Stone Pedicure SPECIAL $189 1232 56th St Delta 604.948.9801 www.spatime.ca
1. Add moisture and hydration to the skin The winter elements tend to draw moisture from the skin and spring is the perfect time to make up for lost hydration. During the winter months, a heavy moisturizer works but in warmer (and more humid) weather, you may want to opt for a light-weight moisturizer. To add moisture back into tired and dry skin, we recommend our Guava & Bamboo Moisturizer which adds a medium finish and works well with normal to dry and even sensitive skin types. 2. Consider changing up your cleanser The cleanser you use to combat winter skin woes may not be the best choice for spring. According to Skin Care Specialist, Ailish Wallace “In the Fall and Winter we recommend more milky type cleansers to keep the skin nourished. For your skin care routine in spring and summer consider gel cleansers or a light cleanser to dissolve sweat, oil and sunscreens”. A light milk cleanser like our Lemon Cleanser adds moisture back into the skin and is gentle enough to combat sensitivities that might have been brought on by harsh winter conditions. Gel cleansers such as the Stone Crop Gel wash is great for the spring and summer months, and helps to combat hyper pigmentation. 3. Apply daily SPF protection After months of cabin fever, you’re finally able to get outside into the warmth and sunshine. Vitamin D is important to your health and wellbeing so we encourage you to take advantage of those rays, but don't forget to also protect your skin with a daily SPF moisturizer. We recommend our Tropical Vanilla Day Cream SPF 32 (face) and our Tropical Vanilla Body SPF 32. Maybe add a bit more? 4. Moisturize & exfoliate your whole body Adjust your skin care routine to reflect the seasonal changes that come with spring. A few changes necessitated by spring: The cold, dry days of winter may be over, but your dry, flaky skin remains. Spring is a good time for deep exfoliation and cleansing. During winter, much of our skin is “out of sight, out of mind.” Long pants, long sleeves, and warm socks may have prevented you from seeing the rough, dry skin building up on your feet, knees, and elbows. Slough off that old layer of dry skin and make room for spring. Switch to a lighter moisturizer. Higher temperatures result in oilier skin for everyone, not just those with a tendency to oily skin. It’s important to use a lighter moisturizer during spring. If you prefer not to switch to a new moisturizer, we recommend mixing some rosewater into your thick, winter moisturizer for best results. Are you looking to add more products to your spring skin care? Book a free Skin Analysis and Spa Time will provide you with the prescription and expert education on how to take care of all your skin care needs throughout the year!

NON-INVASIVE, PLEASANT, FAST • Body Sculpting • Cellulite Reduction • Skin Tightening • Circumference Reduction • Stretch Marks Improvement Call today for a free consultation In April 2005 Open Space Yoga opened in the heart of Ladner Village on Delta Street. The local community instantly embraced them and their studio space and has been voted by the local Community as ‘Best Fitness Facility’ in Ladner for the last 9 years in The Delta Optimist Readers Choice Awards. When they first opened they had 2 mandates that still exist today: 1/ To create a safe space where ANYBODY, no matter what age, size or sex could benefit from the practice in a safe, non-intimidating mindful way. 2/ To be part of, and give back to our wonderful Community. On the Community front Open Space Yoga has raised thousands of dollars for local causes that they believe in such as The Delta Hospice Society, Also they have ended their year with Christmas Candlelight Classes raising money and food for The South Delta Food Bank. This has become a favourite for their students and instructors who all
generously donate their time and efforts. Several of the instructors have been with them since day one and have now grown to a team of 12. “We feel so very blessed to have such amazing teachers. Each one brings their own skills, training and care to their classes and all teach in a mindful, safe, egoless way”. says owner Michael Rudd. Open Space Yoga started running 12 classes a week and now have expanded to 21 classes including a new B-Workout Fitness Class and Yoga for Men. Teen headed to Pan Am Games
Markus Thormeyer is one of Canada’s top young swimmers with an eye on the 2016 Summer Olympics BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
A 17-year-old who will be competing at this summer’s Pan American Games is a huge accomplishment in itself. Yet, swimming standout Markus Thormeyer remains focused on an even greater conquest. “Rio de Janeiro (and the 2016 Summer Olympics) is the goal for me,” confessed the Grade 12 South Delta secondary student. “Making the Pan Ams was a stepping stone I needed to do. Now that I have made the team, it gives me more confidence going into next year’s Olympic team trials.” Thormeyer still needed to swim the best race of his life to secure his spot in Toronto this summer. At the recent National Trials, the Winskill Dolphin Swim Club member set a new Canadian age group record with a clocking of 55.37 seconds to earn silver in the 100 metre backstroke final. He eventually secured one of 36 Pan Am Games spots on the line by placing second in the 200m back two days later. The competition took place at the new Pan Am Games Aquatics Centre where Thormeyer will be in Canadian colours less than three months from now. “After the 100, I really couldn’t celebrate because I had more races to do and they weren’t naming the Canadian team until the last day of the meet,” he explained. “My 200 result definitely helped me. I thought I had a good shot after that but you still never know. “Last year at trials I was fourth (in the 100). I set my sights this year on working towards the podium and making the senior team. I just really worked hard for it.” Thormeyer has his eye on the current Olympic standard for the 100 back. His new personal best is 1.5 seconds off — a gap he is confident can be closed over the next 12 months. He has broken down his swim in Toronto and can see where time can be made up.
“There were a lot of things good with that race but also a lot of things that could have been a lot better too,” he said. “There are small things I need to work on like breakouts, my starts and my turns. Tightening those things are my biggest faults right now. “I know what I need to do and so does my coach.” Thormeyer’s family moved to Tsawwassen from Ontario when he was in Grade 6. Swimming has always been his passion and soon after he joined the Dolphins where he has been working with head coach Ben Keast ever since. Thormeyer had older role models in Noemie Thomas and Luke Reilly who were well on their way to becoming national team swimmers. All three are now on the Pan Am Games team. “Just knowing that they trained here and they could make it was something I could look up to,” he recalled. “It showed me what hard work could do and that I could achieve my goals too.” It also didn’t hurt Thormeyer would grow into what would be considered a perfect swimmer’s body. He now stands at 6-foot-6 with a considerable wingspan. But the soft-spoken teen made it clear it doesn’t all come naturally. “I just accepted there are sacrifices you have to make to be a swimmer,” he explained. “You can’t go to every party and you can’t let your grades slip. It’s all about managing that and not letting failures in the pool effect your school work.” He enjoyed a rare week off after the National Trials when he got a chance to catch-up on his favourite pastime out of the pool — “watching Netflix.” He has resumed his regular training schedule that has him in the water five days a week, including morning and afternoon sessions three times. His growing resumé includes competing at the 2013 Junior Worlds and last summer’s Junior Pan Pacific Championships. His performance in Toronto

Winskill Dolphin member Markus Thormeyer booked his ticket to Toronto this summer with a pair of second place finishes at the recent National Trials. The Pan Games trip will come shortly after his high school grad celebration also earned him a spot in the 2015 Junior World Championships later this year in Singapore. It all adds up to Thormeyer being a nationally carded athlete which helps offset training and travel costs. He has received plenty of scholarship interest from universities on both sides of the border and says he will be attending a school next fall. He just doesn’t know where yet.
“I narrowed it down but still haven’t made a decision. I need to make it pretty soon as everyone has been on me about it,” he laughed. “It will be different but an exciting change for me. “Whatever happens, I just need to keep moving forward and keep my eye on the goal.” That’s being Brazil bound in 2016.

THC captures men’s league playoff title Tsawwassen Hockey Club II (THC) returned to the championship circle in the South Delta Men’s Over 35 Hockey League, avenging last year’s lost to the Guns to capture the “A” playoff championship with a 6-1 victory. THC II were led by the outstanding goaltending of league president Dave Espley who allowed only five goals in three playoff games. The potent THC attack was led by rookie Ken Phillips with three goals and helpers registered to Sean Gurniak and David
Clarkson. In the “B” playoffs, the Bruins won their fourth straight title behind the stellar goaltending of Stacey Greenstien for a 2-1 victory over the Yeti. The Bruins attack was led by goals from Brian Powell and Alex Izzo. The league executive would like to thank Paisley Wallace once again for her dedication and outstanding work throughout the year as timekeeper and scorer. Special kudos to officials Brad Woof and Aaron Tishler who displayed amazing patience and professionalism all season.

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Our home had been on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliott and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste I was originally considering an older, more experienced realtor when planning to list a condo for sale. However, I liked the team concept of the Fraser Elliott Group and thought they had a comprehensive online and print marketing approach. It turned out to be a very good decision! After listing the condo with photos, it sold in under a week! The photos were professionally done and included 3-D virtual tours in addition to still photos. I received a weekly marketing update and the Fraser Elliott team was in constant contact by e-mail, text and phone. Initially, I was concerned that a condo would not receive the same coverage as a higher-priced property. However, I'm happy to report that this wasn't the case. I felt my listing received as much attention managed group that delivered results! I wholeheartedly recommend the Fraser Elliott Group and would
