Budget session quiet for once

After years of hearing from upset stakeholders, Delta school trustees get a welcome reprieve this week BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

It was a decidedly different atmosphere than previous budget consultation sessions for the Delta school board Tuesday evening. Trustees were to hear from the public on next year’s budget, which like many previous ones has a deficit needing to be rectified. However, unlike past budgets that had the board trim teaching

positions, educational assistants, student transportation or make other painful reductions, including closing a pair of schools a few years ago, this year’s $2 million deficit will be handled differently. The books will be balanced with additional revenues, government funding as well as carrying some debt forward. None of the actual cuts planned are to directly impact the classroom or programs.

The result was a rather quick meeting at the board’s headquarters that didn’t feature the usual cast of upset teachers, parents or other stakeholders. The only person in the audience to speak on the budget was Delta Paul Steer Teachers’ Association DTA president president Paul Steer, who reiterated many of the concerns expressed by teachers he said.

when asked for their feedback by the DTA. “From the input given to us by our members, maintaining and increasing classroom teacher, non-enrolling teacher, CUPE and principal and vice-principal staffing should be the district’s main priority,”

Steer said more teachers are needed to improve class size and composition, more support is required for special needs students and other staffing issues need to be addressed, including principals for every school. He reiterated that custodial and maintenance time needs to be increased and conveyed teacher concerns about art, math, music, physical education and textbook supplies.

The topic of funding for the George Massey Tunnel replacement project came up during a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday with DeltaRichmond East MP KerryLynne Findlay as the guest speaker. The Conservative cabinet minister was asked during a question-and-answer session whether there’s money allocated for infrastructure improvements and whether that budget can sustain the project. Findlay said that’s a bit of an enigma. “The provincial government has announced a bridge. They’ve announced they’re building it. They’ve announced where it will begin and where it will end. And I know as much as any of you do,” she said. “I have tried to get more information. I’ve tried to understand how they intend to build such a large infrastructure project without federal funding because normally these are P2 or P3 major projects. We’re talking about a lot of money.” The province announced a couple of years ago that a new multi-lane bridge between South Delta and Richmond would be built along the Highway 99 corridor to replace the aging tunnel.

The Optimist reported last month that technical analysis is ongoing and an environmental review must also be completed, but everything is moving according to schedule. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and the bridge should be operational by the end of 2022. The province hasn’t said how much the project

would cost, noting technical work must be completed first. “We’re not quite sure what’s going on. That’s an honest answer. I’ve been trying to find out now for quite a while,” Findlay said. The minister of national revenue was at the luncheon, held at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner, to talk about this

week’s federal budget. She said it supports jobs and growth, helps families through tax relief and ensures security of Canadians through enhanced support for the armed forces. She noted the annual Tax-Free Savings Account contribution limit will be increased to $10,000 effective for 2015 and subse-

quent years and that seniors will be given more freedom and flexibility when it comes to managing their retirement income. “Implementing policies focused on raising Canada’s economic potential and creating stable, well-paying jobs continues to be our government’s top priority,” she said.

A 49-year-old pilot of a small plane escaped serious injury after a daring emergency landing on Highway 91 in North Delta Wednesday. but nobody on the ground was hurt. According to Delta

police, the pilot was coming from Surrey’s King George Airpark and was flying

over the Delta area when it is believed the plane lost power, causing a forced landing on the highway. Police say the pilot was taken to hospital for evaluation of non-life threatening injuries. Southbound traffic on the highway had to be diverted for several hours, but traffic both ways eventually reopened around 9 p.m. Delta police are working with the National Transportation Safety Board in the investigation.

Ladner’s Ryan Cooper came away from last month’s provincial Yo-Yo Championships with a pair of first-place finishes. He won gold medals in the 13 and under junior open division and the sport ladder division. He explained sport ladder is where competitors complete an issued list of tricks while the open division is where competitors make up their

own tricks and routine. “It was really fun, just more hanging out with everyone and having fun than competing,” said the 12-year-old. He noted most of the members from the group he’s a part of, the Vancouver Yo-Yo Club, were at the event, held at Taylor Park School in Burnaby. Cooper, who’s been yoyoing for about a year, had been practicing an hour or two daily for about a month in preparation for the pro-

vincials. Asked what he enjoys about yo-yoing, Cooper explained while competing is done individually, there’s a community aspect to it. “You compete by yourself but when you’re not competing, you’re around everyone, with everyone.” Next up for Cooper is the Western Canadians set for June in Kelowna. He took part in the nationals last year and a Pacific Northwest event in Seattle last February.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW The fact the Century Group is looking to redevelop the Town Centre Mall comes as absolutely no surprise given the Tsawwassen landmark is, to put it charitably, a little out of date. Even in a town where development proposals often get a rough ride, I suspect many will support the idea of bringing what’s perhaps the most critical piece of real estate in the commercial core into the 21st century. The idea of a residential tower will more than likely receive one of those aforementioned rough rides, but there’s no doubt the concept of revitalizing the property will be well received. As the mall gets closer to its inevitable date with the wrecking ball, I can’t help but think of the role it has played in this area over a great many years. Not only has it provided local shoppers with goods and services for decades, but it’s also been a hub for community activity over that time. It’s been the place to go every December to wake up Santa and then sit on his knee for a photo. It’s where kids go for Spring Break programs and Halloween activities, where the Terry Fox Run originates and where movies are watched under the night sky. Craft fairs, art exhibits, school concerts, fashion shows, registration tables, car sales, community displays... the Town Centre Mall has been the place where it all happens. And don’t forget about the now-gone movie theatre and bowling alley that kept countless South Delta kids, and adults, entertained over the years. Say what you will about the mall and its 1970s vibe, but it’s been an integral part of this community’s fabric for a very long time. Having said all that, it’s clear redevelopment efforts are desperately needed, particularly with two massive shopping centres set to open at the Tsawwassen First Nation next spring. Tsawwassen’s commercial core has evolved over time to carve out a niche in a highly competitive regional marketplace, but it’s never seen a challenge of this magnitude. Reinventing the Town Centre as a mixed-use neighbourhood makes abundant sense and would position it well to compete with what’s on the horizon. The consultant Delta hired to devise a business sustainability strategy has concluded as much by suggesting land use plans be reviewed with an eye to creating vibrant downtown cores. Given the history of the Town Centre Mall, there’s part of me that’s sad to know it won’t be around for much longer, but it’s obvious that status quo isn’t an option at this point.

Energy export by ship needs stronger external controls IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Our recent experience of an oil spill in Vancouver harbour brings to mind a search for what “world class” means when applied to keeping our waters clean. Prior to this event, our prime minister, members of the federal cabinet and members of the B.C. cabinet all said we need and would have “world class” spill and containment procedures in place. The Canadian Coast Guard was named as first responders and the back up was the cleanup insurance funds the then-federal minister of energy said were being increased to $1 billion. The clean up was recently tested in Vancouver, and according to many, it failed. It took six hours for the coast guard to get on the scene. It took seven hours to get a boom around the single offending ship.

It took three days to contain most of the spill — a very small amount — and after all of this, 20 per cent of it seems to have escaped. Impressive? Time to relax? Well, not just yet. What does “world class” mean? Do we have any quantitative definitions or any standards? Is this a meaningless expression that really means pretty good or maybe just OK? The Exxon Valdez cleanup of 20-plus years ago has cost over $8 billion and the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is over $40 billion and counting. Oil can still be found on the beaches in either place. Reports of disfigured fish in the Gulf of Mexico are a common occurrence. Is this what is meant by world class? We need a different and better system. Consider the lessons learned from drug Thalidomide, initially sold as sedative. Prior to the 1960s, drug manufacturers had an easy time to introduce new drugs. Then, with thalidomide and its frequent birth defects, governments insisted that all new drugs must be first proven safe. This was the beginning of clinical trials and the very expensive

but rigorous way to get new drugs to market. It has prevented major health disasters since then. The new proposition is: “Not assumed to be safe until proven so.” What if we applied this approach to oil exports? We would insist on safe boats, on restricting or prohibiting transit through coastal waters when weather is severe, on dedicated standby tugs, on proven response times and capabilities, and enough resources located such as to quickly contain a spill. All of this would be in place and proven before the first shipment took place. Frequent/annual inspections and licences for limited volumes would be the norm. To those from the energy sector who say it’s not needed, we can counter by saying look at the pharmaceutical industry — no disasters. In some cases, self-regulation does not work. The energy export by ship is an industry that needs much stronger external controls. Just ask anyone who walks the beaches in Vancouver, Louisiana or Valdez. April 24, 2015 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Get boost from interpretive centre Editor: Concern has been expressed for the demise of the Ladner business area because of the mall developments at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Perhaps this could be overcome if a Fraser River estuary interpretive centre was built on the Ladner waterfront as proposed by the Delta Fishing Heritage Society. Such a centre would showcase the Fraser estuary and all those who par-

ticipated over the last 100 years, both from a fishery and wildfowl aspect. The location on the Ladner waterfront would be ideal with a view of the Ladner marshes and Fraser River. The very life of the Fraser estuary could be displayed and studied from this site. It would include the history of the TFN and of families of non-aboriginals who harvested and sold the fish, and the preservation of the wildfowl.

A special thank you to the Optimist for helping to promote this special event. Lesley Sutherland, whose photo and story were on the same page, brought her St. David’s Community Choir to this event, and also was one of the conductors of the massed choir. It would require a feasibility study that includes all public organizations, government agencies, private businesses and institutions involved in the protection and usage of the Fraser River estuary. The Delta Chamber of Commerce carried out such a feasibility study in 1999 for a salmon interpretation centre only. It was deemed such a project would be of great economic value to the area in which it was built. A Fraser River estuary

interpretive centre located on the Ladner waterfront would be a destination that would stimulate the economy of Ladner and surrounding area and provide location where Delta’s fishing and farming families’ history could be rightly preserved and displayed. It would take forwardlooking action and fundraising by all involved for this to become a reality. It has been done in other parts of Canada, so why not here? Douglas George Massey

Valentina Persian/Domestic Long Hair, Dilute Torti, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 6 years old). Valentina came to us as a stray that had been hanging around an apartment complex for at least 2 months. She has a tattoo but we were unable to trace it. We are still getting to know Valentina. She is pretty shy and likes to stay in her little box. She will smell your hand and allow you to pet her though. Valentina came in with a scar on her cornea which you can see in the picture. We aren’t sure if this affects her vision but it doesn’t require further treatment.

Ships should be tolled as well

Editor: Re: MLA quashes rumour; exit to remain with new bridge, letter to the editor, April 22 What I would like our MLA to investigate is this: Since there are two parties that are going to gain something from this new bridge (commuters who get a quicker/safer crossing and the port which gets to use bigger ships), is it only the commuters that are going to be paying a toll for using the bridge? Seems to me that the ships should be tolled appropriately to go under the bridge as well. Jim Rogers

On hand for the cheque presentation are (from left): Veronica Carroll (Delta Hospital Foundation), Tracey Trouwborst (Delta Hospital), Mike Giesbrecht (Delta Hospital), Cecelia Lawson Gilmore (RBC), Sherry Lampshire-Hall (RBC), Lisa Hoglund (Delta Hospital Foundation), Paul Martins (RBC) and Colin Shirley (RBC).

RBC donates $20,000 for life-saving equipment Money given to the Delta Hospital Foundation will support the purchase of a non-invasive ventilator Delta Hospital has received a generous gift from RBC that will help save patient lives. The $20,000 donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation will support the purchase of a non-invasive ventilator, a critical piece of equipment that assists with establishing and maintaining the airway during management of trauma and intensive care. The ventilator helps to stabilize and treat patients in a quick and minimally invasive manner, ensuring they are kept as comfortable

as possible during what can be highly stressful events. “This is an essential piece of equipment that is utilized by staff responding to patients who are suffering from impending respiratory failure as a result of cardiac or respiratory diseases,” says Lisa Hoglund, individual giving manager for the Delta Hospital Foundation. RBC has been a constant supporter of Delta Hospital, donating over $200,000 since 1999 and sharing the foundation’s long-term vision of providing the best

possible health care to the community. Over the years RBC funding has supported the purchase of a number of critical items, including crash and isolation carts, and high-tech tools for the respiratory therapy team. “We take our responsibilities in the community seriously,” says Jennifer Cabeldu, manager of donations, brand and communications at RBC. “We see our contributions to Delta Hospital as an investment in the future health and wellbeing of the community.”

Delta TV is up for two awards this year in the CCSA Tuned-in Canada awards for excellence in local programming. “We are so excited to learn that Delta TV has been shortlisted in two categories,” said Tannis Goodfellow, Delta Cable’s sales and marketing manager. “We have a passionate commitment to the communities we serve and take a great deal of pride in our local presence both at the community support level and through our local programming.”

In the category of Community/Public Service, Delta TV has been shortlisted for its work with Delta firefighters giving local, underprivileged children a holiday to remember. Delta TV employees packed boxes, loaded them into vehicles and delivered them to Deltassist and the East Delta Hall, where firefighters helped unpack and arrange all the toys, bikes, games, etc. to ensure youngsters could experience the magic of the holidays. In the category of Best

Sports Coverage, Delta TV is a finalist thanks to its efforts to provide unparalleled sports coverage, including junior hockey, basketball, baseball, football and more. Operated by staff and volunteers, Delta TV delivers high quality local sports broadcasts showcasing games and compelling stories of local teams and athletes. To help Delta TV earn top spot in these award categories, go to www.tunedincanada.com/vote/ to vote. Voting closes May 22.

A 10-year-old Nicaraguan boy squints, raises his bat and stares steadily towards the pitcher. The pitch comes. It’s fast, but he knocks the ball over heads and beyond his wildest dreams, causing a whoop of hollering and whistling from his comrades. He smiles his toothless grin and readjusts his toobig jersey. It’s another joyful afternoon of baseball in Jiquilillo, Nicaragua. This August, a group of 16 boys from the Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball Association, along with their families, will have a life-changing experience. The 10- to 15-year-olds will visit the small Nicaraguan village to take part in a humanitarian excursion with baseball as the unifying theme.

The families will partake in the completion of a volunteer-run project to open a baseball field, called the Field of Hope, in the impoverished village. The field is the brainchild of Tammi Laroque from Surrey, who first visited Nicaragua in 2013 and learned of Monty’s Beach Lodge with its social/ humanitarian theme. Owner Don Montgomery, who splits his time between Parksville and Jiquilillo, has been more than a welcome presence in the village. Over the years, he and other socially-minded volunteers have organized and donated resources and funding to build a much-needed school and medical clinic. He has helped bring shipping containers of donated baseball gear, school uniforms, shoes and other provisions. The popularity of baseball there inspired Laroque to propose the Field of

Nicaraguan boys to share their love of the game on a level playing field is a humbling and rewarding opportunity we can’t wait to participate in. We are so grateful to have been asked to be part of this project,” says Forbes. The Tsawwassen families will be also stuffing their luggage to the brim with much-wanted arts and craft supplies, Spanish books, pencils and anything else they can fit to hand out to the villagers. The association is seeking every possible source of funding for the trip. “Fundraising efforts are already in full swing,” says fundraising organizer Corrine Mitran. “The association is hopeful we can raise over $50,000 in order to send the group of almost 40 TABA members travelling there to volunteer their efforts.” The Tsawwassen

Amateur Baseball Association is also donating 10 per cent of the funds raised toward purchasing much-needed items for the villagers. The Baseball Without Borders project is also seeking corporate and individual donations, and has set up a crowdfunding website at fundrazr.com/ campaigns/3xWBa to facilitate the process, whereby the public and companies can make donations through Paypal. The group is also open to sponsorships. To discuss sponsorship opportunities, contact John Forbes at VP2@tsawwassenbaseball. ca. Dr. Ken Lai Retirement Announcement

It is with mixed feelings that I am announcing my retirement at the end of May 2015. On the one hand I am excited about the future and spending time with my grandchildren, but on the other hand I hate giving up my work. It has been a pleasure meeting and caring for you and your families over the past 42½ years. I sincerely appreciate your friendship and loyalty and will take the memories of all that I have experienced into my retirement. I respectfully decline any retirement gifts; however, if you were considering one, a contribution to the Delta Hospital Foundation in my name would be greatly appreciated. I encourage you to establish care with my successor, Dr. Sandy Chuang, as soon as possible. l wish you good health and happiness. Sincerely, Dr. Ken Lai

Food for thought Sitting patiently in the line up, I was dreaming about the yummy breakfast I would soon enjoy. My eyes were treated to a marvelous sunny morning in beautiful South Delta. As I pulled up to the “payment ready” window, my friend at the till said, “The lady in front of you already paid for your breakfast!” It was a simple gift — buying my breakfast — but it reminded me that when we act out of selfless love we are following the example of Jesus. When the world seems to be turning to grief and violence, remember that many of us want to make a difference by living in the example of Jesus. That is the true expression of Easter resurrection. On that first day of the week when

the women went to the tomb — they found it empty. Was that enough to convince them? The angelic beings in the tomb said, “He is risen!” Was that what turned their hearts to believe that Jesus was risen? I’m convinced that it was how people’s lives were changed following that first day — how they worked to share, bring justice and peace to everyone, not just a favoured few. They lived with selfless love and joy — that’s resurrection! As I pulled away from the till, I tooted and waved, but that seemed too little an expression of thankfulness, so I’m hoping the guy behind me wasn’t having several “full-meal deals.” I continued the resurrection joy and bought his dinner too.

A16 The Delta Optimist April 24, 2015 Delta Trades & Technical Career Fair

Mayor’s vision for fair continues to grow Next week’s event is poised to be the biggest yet “I think it’s important for young people today to know that there are many options to a successful career and they don’t necessarily need to attend university to achieve their dreams.” That was Mayor Lois Jackson in 2013 as she embarked on a vision to help Delta students, parents and the public discover rewarding and lucrative

careers in trades and technical fields. Through a partnership with the Delta school district, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Community College, employers and industry organizations, Jackson’s vision continues to be realized each year with the Delta Trades & Technical Career Fair.

The fair has grown from 50 exhibits and about 2,500 attendees in 2013 to 75 exhibits and about 3,500 attendees last year, with plans for more than 90 exhibits and upwards of 4,000 attendees this year. The fair is a day of discovery where attendees can try their hand at dozens of different trades and technical jobs to find the one that

These hands-on, interactive exhibits give attendees the opportunity to try out welding, culinary arts, masonry, hair design, construction, esthetics, welding and dozens of other potential careers. This year’s event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 at the

Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta, features new initiatives in the evening: • Take a selfie for a chance to win a great prize. • Learn from experts in a variety of fields and ask them the questions you really want to know during the Talk-to-a-Trade mini-

event from 5 to 7 p.m. • Get help with your resume and online job searching with computers and free professional assistance. For more information, a full list of exhibitors, prizes and activities, visit http://Delta.ca/CareerFair. Admission is free.

PEER-MENTORED PROGRAMMING PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR OVER 30,000 STUDENTS

Established in 1994 as a charitable, not for profit organization, SkillsBC plays a vital role in influencing BC students to pursue skilled trades & technology careers through unique and peer-mentored programming. Widely recognized for 14 Olympic-style competitions hosted throughout the province each year, SkillsBC has provided tens of thousands of students with opportunities to explore skilled trades and technology careers. In 2015 SkillsBC will work with our expansive network of partners from educators, government, industry and labour uniting 600 volunteers to offer hands-on, engaging opportunities to over 30,000 students.

Made of 100% recycled rubber, Eco Paving is slip-resistant and impact-absorbing. It has a variety of applications, from splash parks and playgrounds to driveways, patios, pool decks, and walkways. “From a safety perspective, it really is the best product for pool areas because of its non-slip surface, it also feels great to walk on.” A great feature of Eco Paving is that it can be installed directly over existing surfaces such as asphalt, brick, concrete, epoxy stone, and even torchon membrane. The product is flexible and can accommodate any future ground movements, greatly

reducing any possibility of future cracking. This makes it a cost effective choice when you consider the time and labour that it takes to remove and replace an existing surface. Unlike asphalt or concrete, the rubber finish will not fracture or crack virtually eliminating long-term costs. Eco Paving also provides a fiveyear warranty against defective materials including cracking, which is generally five times greater than concrete warranties.

Lucrative careers await those in trades Young adults can start training right away on their way to earning good money as welders, bakers and more

My name is Josh. I graduated from high school two years ago and after spending a year at university taking psychology classes, realized it wasn’t for me. Since then I’ve been working part-time at a coffee shop. A few months ago, after got home from my shift, my mom told me I needed to start paying rent. There was no way I could pay rent with the money I was making and still go travelling with my friends like we planned. Luckily, my mom had recently noticed an ad for the Delta Trades & Technical Career Fair and suggested I check it out. I visited www.delta.ca/careerfair and learned that the fair would have approximately 100 interactive exhibits featuring all kinds of different trades. I watched the highlights video and it looked like last year’s event was a lot of fun. Plus, I saw that I could win awesome prizes just by taking a selfie at the event, so I texted my friends to go

I could travel. I could move out; maybe I could even save up and buy a place of my own. Two months after the career fair, I was enrolled in a welding program and I’m now well on my way to becoming a journeyman welder. I only wish

As soon as we got in we were blown away by all of the people, exhibits to look at, and the food trucks outside. I can’t even remember all of the trades I got to try — I’m not kidding, I actually got to try out laying bricks at Kwantlen’s masonry booth, auto painting on a paint simulator and welding. My friends and I took selfies to try and win some prizes and one of us even won a $50 gift card. We saw the Trans Mountain presen-

tation on the show stage, talked to experts at the Talk-to-a-Trade mini-event and learned about apprenticeship grants through Service Canada. For me, the event highlighted a solid benefit of a career in trades — the money. I could start training for these careers right away and start earning money — good money — in a few months. No more $11 an hour at the coffee shop. No more odd jobs for a few bucks. I had no idea I could make $28 an hour as

an electrician or $44,000 a year as a baker. With all of these great options available it was hard to choose one, but I loved the experience of welding. Crafting something with metal and heat was so cool, and I learned it’s a trade that can cross over into many industries. I also found out I could make great money as a welder. In less than a year, I could be earning way more than twice what I was making at the coffee shop. I could pay rent to my mom.

I’d found this opportunity sooner. Josh is fictional, but his experience is not. Come to the Delta Trades & Technical Career Fair on Thursday, April 30 at Sungod Recreation Centre and you could discover your future career.

Eco friendly asphalt and concrete resurfacing Made of 100-per-cent recycled rubber, the paving is slip-resistant and impact-absorbing. It has a variety of applications, from splash parks and playgrounds to driveways, patios, pool decks and walkways. “From a safety perspective, it really is the best product for pool areas because of its non-slip surface.”

“It also feels great to walk on.” A great feature of Eco Paving’s product, says Lavigne, is that it can be installed directly over existing surfaces such as asphalt, brick, concrete, epoxy stone, road base and even torch-on membrane. The product is flexible and can accommodate any future

elta Secondary drama students will transport audience members to the world of Agrabah next month when the musical Aladdin is staged at Genesis Theatre. The stage production is based on the hit Disney animated movie from 1992. “We have tried to stay true to that Disney version from the ‘90s because we love it so much, but we’ve also taken our own little spin on it,” says teacher and artistic director Rebecca Salton. “Agrabah’s a world of magic and intrigue so it’s definitely different from anything we’ve done,” she adds. It’s been fun trying to do magic onstage, she says, noting they’ve used a mix of technical elements and creativity to tackle that aspect. The musical has a cast

of nearly 50 and a stage crew of over 30 students. Students from grades 8 through 12 are involved in

the production. Grade 11 student Dylan Ferguson plays the magic Genie in the upcoming pro-

duction. The late actor and comedian Robin Williams voiced the character in the animated Disney movie.

“I’m trying to really capture the essence, the energy that he brought,” Ferguson says.

He adds the cast and crew are working together well and the sets are “phenomenal.” Aladdin runs from May 6 to 9 at 7 p.m. at Genesis Theatre. Tickets are $15 for adults and $13 for students/ seniors. Legally Blonde to hit Equinox stage BY

egally Blonde the Musical is the next big show to hit the stage at Equinox Theatre. The South Delta Secondary production, which includes 85 students, is a really fun show, says producer and director Jennifer Harbott. The story, which is also a novel and movie, follows main character Elle Woods, a Malibu sorority girl, as she heads to Harvard Law School in an effort to win back her ex-boyfriend. Along the way she figures out she is smart enough to do it on her own, says Harbott. “It’s a really great story about being yourself, being true to who you are and living to your full potential.” Grade 11 student Maude Green plays Woods. It’s her

first time tackling musical theatre and she says it’s a lot of work and a bit scary but she’s enjoying rehearsals and running through the songs. “It’s really cool to see everything starting to come together now,” she says. Co-director Richard Cox says it’s a very funny show with some amazing actors. Legally Blonde the Musical (music and lyrics

by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin and book by Heather Hach) runs at Equinox Theatre May 1 and May 5 to 8. Show times are May 1 and 5 to 8 at 7 p.m. and then May 1 and 5 at 12 p.m. Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $5 for kids under 10. Exploring a foodie’s paradise Northwest corner of Washington state also rich in natural beauty BY

HANS TAMMEMAGI

Optimist contributor

Driving south from Vancouver, I was soon across the U.S. border and exploring the northwest corner of Washington state – rich in natural beauty and a foodie’s paradise. I settled into the Semiahmoo Resort, no ordinary hostelry. Located at the tip of a curving, milelong spit – a county park – the resort is secluded and surrounded by nature. A cannery operated here from 1882 to 1964 and several of the buildings, including an iconic tower, have been preserved and incorporated into the resort. Historic photos and artifacts abound. There’s a sense of times past. Next morning, under a cobalt-blue sky I joined a bird-watching group. Led by Paul Woodcock, a passionate birder and threetime president of the North

Cascades Audubon Society, we set off along a shoreline teeming with herons, gulls, and eagles. “This spit is one of best bird-watching areas in the northwest,” he said, pointing to eelgrass in the shallows. “The grass is crucial, attracting small fish, which attract bigger fish, which attract birds.” In the afternoon, I hiked to the Alaska Packers Association Museum, housed in an original cannery building. I wandered among the displays that revive the years 1873 to 1968 when a salmon cannery operated at the site of the Semiahmoo Resort receiving fish from Alaska. A scale model of a large salmon trap, antique machinery and historic photos make those times come alive. I loved the film of early tall ships and imagined being high in a crow’s nest. As the sun settled lower,

Charcuterie Platters at Pierside Kitchen.

I squeezed into a kayak and paddled into the bay. Dozens of seals were flopped on the marina dock, their big, round eyes

watching me warily. Behind them, Mount Baker lay like a sleeping giant on the horizon. There was a glorious feeling of oneness with the

watery realm. Next day, hungry from hiking and exploring, the C Shop in Birch Bay beckoned. I rushed through a lunch of pizza and chowder because my sweet tooth was calling. The owners explained that C stands for candy, which the family-run business has been producing for more than 40 years. I was drawn, lemminglike, to Mount Baker, a constant sentinel on the skyline. Ranger Magenta took me in tow and we drove high up to the Heliotrope Trailhead. As we headed out in driving rain, Magenta rolled her eyes at my shorts and a sopping-wet camping hat, in contrast to the svelte, younger, Goretex-clad hikers sharing the trail. The mountain stillness was broken by water cascading down from the melting glaciers, and crossing streams was something of an adventure. We hiked upwards into the snowline.

On the steeper pitches we kicked steps to avoid a long sliding tumble. When we reached Survey Rock, the rain let up. I gasped at the enormous, steel-blue glacier, criss-crossed with treacherous-looking crevasses. An ominous cracking sound enveloped us, adding to the drama. That evening, famished, I wandered into the Semiahmoo Resort’s Pierside Kitchen where the pièce de résistance was a cedar-plank salmon. Content, I waddled back to my room. When the customs official at the border asked what I was bringing back, I smiled and thought: a thousand wonderful memories. Photo contest has Fraser River focus

The Fraser River Discovery Centre has launched the search for photographs for its annual photograph competition, *click* photos of the fraser. The competition is open to both amateur and professional photographers of all ages. The centre puts together a jury that selects 12 images that will be exhibited in the galleries for one year. The jury will also award three prizes in three categories: The River Wild,

The River at Work and The River’s People. The categories reflect the three pillars of sustainability of the Fraser – environment, economic activity and socioculture. Each year photographers are invited to submit their work on a new theme. This year’s the theme is the colour red. “Red is not often a colour associated with the Fraser but this year we wanted stretch people’s expectations of the river,”

explains exhibit co-ordinator Kathleen Bertrand. “We are always surprised by how photographers decide to interpret the theme selected. We are really looking forward to seeing what people come up with.” Interested photographers can visit www.fraserriverdiscovery.org for details on how to enter. Photos will be accepted until Aug. 15 and the exhibit will open Sept. 23 during RiverFest, the centre’s annual festival in celebration of the river.

Rennie putting his faith in the past Delta Islanders open B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League regular season on Saturday night in Ladner BY

Greg Rennie continues to to surrounded himself with familiar faces as he gets set for his second season back in charge of the Delta Junior “A” Islanders. After an outstanding three-year run overseeing the Richmond Intermediate “A” Roadrunners, it’s no coincidence the Ladner native has brought a number of his former players across the river to form the Islanders’ foundation. Roadrunner alumni Brad Hoffman has been named team captain as Delta opens its B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League regular season schedule Saturday when the Burnaby Lakers visit the Ladner Leisure Centre at 7:30 p.m. He is joined by at least seven former Roadrunner teammates — Cody Nass, Spencer Bromley, Jayden Campbell, Connor Davidson, Chandler Bradley, Jordan Gilles and goalie Ryland Hood. Gilles is a player Rennie had targeted since accepting the Islanders assistant GM and head coach position in the fall of 2013. It took sending graduating standout Eli McLaughlin at the league trading deadline last July for the Coquitlam Adanacs to finally part with the two-way standout. He has already been named an assistant captain for his final year of junior “He’s a kid who just leads by example,” said Rennie.

Delta Islanders head coach Greg Rennie talks to his players during a practice session this week at the Ladner Leisure Centre. “He is a such a dynamic player and athlete. He played for me for two years and knows what expect and what kind of brand of lacrosse I like to play. I think with our chemistry, he will flourish here.” The Islanders are coming off a season that ended in disappointment and sadness. The club was confident it could contend for its first-ever championship but was instead a plateau below perennial powerhouses Coquitlam and New West, settling for 12-9-0 record. Rennie decided to

change course and invest in the future by dealing McLaughlin and others for a pile of midget draft picks. Delta was eventually swept in the opening round of playoffs by New West. The results on the floor paled to what the club was going through off of it as Rennie’s longtime assistant Dave Pirog was diagnosed with cancer in May and passed away four months later. “The kids were absolutely crushed and played for him in the playoffs but it was very difficult,” said Rennie.

His revamped coaching staff includes Marty O’Neill and Logan Schuss joining Ryan Keith as assistants. The plan is for Schuss to take 2015 No. 1 overall midget draft pick Tre Leclaire under his wing as he jumps right to the junior level. “They can relate to each other in so many ways,” said Rennie. “Number one overall picks, NCAA Division One star and high expectations. I think Logan can really connect with Tre and Logan knows that too.” Rennie is counting on much improved goaltending

with returnees Hood and Matt Keith having a season under their belts. He is also expecting 6-foot-5 transition player Reece Callies to be a major force at the back end. Local products Evan Messenger and Jon Phillips elevated their offensive games down the stretch and could have big years. “I think we have depth all over the floor,” added Rennie. “There is also a lot of parity in the league this season and it all depends how we come together as a group. But I believe this team can play with anyone.”

Terrific run in youth soccer ends with quarter-final loss for Vipers

Ladner Vipers’ Erika Schwuchow attempts to block a shot during Sunday’s quarter-final loss.

An outstanding run through youth soccer has come to an end for the Ladner Vipers, courtesy of their longtime rival. The U18 girls soccer team was eliminated from the Coastal “B” Cup playdowns after a 4-3 home field quarter-final loss to the Coquitlam Black Ice. The Vipers captured Coastal Cup titles at the U15 and U16 levels. Both championship game victories were over the Black Ice. The girls also narrowly missed out on being U16 provincial champions after losing out in penalty kicks to Williams Lake in the title game. The girls were coached throughout their run by Dirk Schwuchow. Ken Priestlay served as an assistant, while Pete Findlay was also involved for a number of years until his daughter Laura focused full-time on volleyball. Meanwhile, the U17 Tsawwassen Blues have also enjoyed plenty of success in Coastal Cup play and this year is no exception.

604.868.7858 aaronmunro@sutton.com 1605 53A ST, Cliff Drive, Tsawwassen OPEN SATURDAY 2-4

The girls advanced to the semi-finals with a 1-0 win over the Vancouver Fusion. They will head to UBC’s Warren Field for the second straight weekend to take on the Vancouver Fury. The Blues are also a step closer to returning to the Provincial “B” Cup Championships which will take place in Penticton this year. In 2013, they earned bronze. In boys Coastal Cup action, U17 Ladner Celtic’s reign as champions ended with a heartbreaking 2-1 quarter-final extra time loss to the Central City Breakers Elite. The Surrey visitors netted the game winner in the opening minutes of the first overtime period. Ladner carried much of the play but failed to capitalize on a number of chances. The Elite defeated the Celtic three times this season en route to also winning the District 5 regular season and league cup titles.
