Student enrollment finally on rise

After decades of decline, there are actually 117 more kids in Delta’s public schools now than a year ago BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Enrollment in Delta’s public schools is up for the first time in a long time. The preliminary numbers for the 2015/2016 school year recently presented to the Delta board of education contained the good news that the district has

15,257 students, not including international students, enrolled in elementary and high schools. That’s up 117 from last year. Enrollment had dropped by 423 since 2010/2011, however last year the district was down by only two students. Now the numbers have moved into positive territory, something that had been projected.

Facilities superintendent Frank Geyer noted projections pegged the district’s enrollment to stop declining, level off and then slowly begin climbing. “We’re seeing that happen now, with the exception of Ladner, but we predicted that anyway. Ladner is still slipping because of the aging population there,” Geyer explained.

Ladner elementary schools are down by 36 students and Delta Secondary, which at one point had 1,600 students but has lost about 500 over the years, is also down by 36 this year. Meanwhile, the number of kids enrolled in elementary and high schools in Tsawwassen and North Delta is up. Like most school districts in

B.C., Delta, which had an all-time high of 18,763 students in 1980, had been suffering from a steady decline. However, enrollment in Delta has increased significantly in special education and ESL, two areas that require more time and resources. See ENROLLMENT page 3

Off-duty officer is credited with saving crash victim’s life BY

Quick actions by an off-duty Delta police officer helped save a life after a motorcycle and SUV collided in Ladner Wednesday.

The crash occurred just after 5 p.m. at River Road West and 46A Street. A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow said the motorcyclist, a 29-year-old Delta man, suffered a serious and potentially life-threating leg injury. However, an off-duty officer,

who was one of the first people on the scene, used his belt to create a tourniquet around the injured man’s leg. The man was airlifted to Royal Columbian Hospital and underwent surgery on his leg. Swallow

said the trauma surgeon credited the quick actions of the officer with saving the man’s life. The man is now in stable condition, she said. The female driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is coop-

erating with police. Swallow said the cause of the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol is not believed to be a factor. Officers had the road closed for several hours.

Voter turnout hit a 20-year high with this week’s federal election and the new riding of Delta recorded some of the highest in the country. Nationally, voter turnout was 68.49 per cent, the highest since the 1993 election, which coincidentally saw the majority of voters reject the Progressive Conservative Party under then prime minister Kim Campbell in favour of Jean Chretien’s Liberals with

the Bloc Quebecois making up the official Opposition. The newly created Reform Party, one of the pre-cursors to the current Conservative Party, won 52 of 295 available seats. Voter turnout was 70.9 per cent in that election. This time around it was Justin Trudeau’s Liberals that ousted Stephen Harper and the Conservatives winning 184 of the 338 seats available. The Conservatives won 99 seats to make up the official Opposition. The NDP won 44 seats, down from 103

in the last election, and the Bloc Quebecois ended up with 10 seats. Here in Delta, voter turnout was 75.11 per cent, one of the highest in the province. Saanich-Gulf Islands, which is home to Green Party Leader Elizabeth May, had the highest voter turnout in B.C. with 79.47 per cent of eligible voters casting a ballot. The ridings of Victoria, Courtenay-Alberni, North Vancouver and EsquimaltSaanich-Sooke were the only ones with a higher turnout than Delta, ranging

from 77.21 to 75.94 per cent. The average for the province was 70.36 per cent. The riding of Ottawa Centre had the highest voter turnout in the country with 82.22 per cent of casting a ballot. Voter turnout in the newly configured Delta riding this election was at least 10 points higher than the turnout in the last four elections in Delta-Richmond East. Only 59.65 per cent of eligible voters cast a ballot in 2011. Voter turnout in the riding was 60.06 per cent

in 2008, 64.98 per cent in 2006 and 63.97 in 2004. Voter turnout numbers are based on preliminary results and do not include voters that registered on election day.

Longshoreman stabbed at Deltaport BY

Saturday, OCTOBER 31st, 2 - 4 pm

A Surrey man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing a co-worker at Deltaport earlier this week. Delta police were called to the port just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow said it appears two longshoremen got into an argument, which escalated to the point where one man stabbed the other. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and witnesses were able to subdue

the suspect until officers arrived. One witness received a minor cut, but he did not require medical treatment. “At this time, it’s unknown what caused the dispute or why it escalated so quickly to a stabbing,” Swallow said. The suspect, Dalvir Singh Mangat, 59, appeared in court later Tuesday and is facing charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. He remains in police custody.

Patrol to keep tabs on municipal sites

Civic employees to provide extra eyes and ears at parks and schools over the upcoming Halloween weekend The Corporation of Delta, in cooperation with CUPE Local 454, is once again organizing a Halloween Patrol. Set to run from 6:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on the evenings of Oct. 30 and 31, the Halloween Patrol involves the police and fire departments, municipal hall and volunteer members of CUPE Local 454. The patrol provides extra eyes and ears to enhance security at Delta’s facilities, parks and schools as volunteers report all suspicious activities to the Delta police. “The Halloween Patrol is a well-coordinated effort and another great example of staff working together to help reduce vandalism and protect our community property,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. To increase visibility and safety, the lights at some sports fields and recreation facility parking lots will be left on overnight on Oct. 29, 30, 31 and Nov. 1. Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call Delta police at 604946-4411.

Recent dredging removed tonnes of sediment from secondary channels of the Fraser River, but there are concerns that unless a long-term maintenance place is put in place the silt will simply build up again.

Long-term plan needed for dredging channels $1.5 million left for maintenance will only go so far BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The dredging of local channels of the Fraser River was completed earlier this year, however work continues on establishing a longterm maintenance plan. A Delta staff report to civic politicians earlier this month outlined the fact there is $1.5 million left over from the $10 million in funding set aside to dredge local channels. The funds must be used for future maintenance dredging and staff will work with Port Metro Vancouver and the provincial government to determine where the money will be kept until it is needed and how it can be used for maximum effectiveness. While this funding, and the completed dredging is a start, many recognize that a long-term plan and funding are needed. “The completion of these dredging works after more than 20 years without dredging is a significant achievement, and the benefits will be felt throughout the local community for years to come,” the staff

report reads. “However, the river continues to deposit sediment each year and, without regular maintenance and dredging, the channels will continue to fill in and will eventually reach a critical point when a major dredging effort will once again be required.” The Ladner Sediment Group, a grassroots collection of residents that set out to lobby the port authority and all levels of government for funding to clear the local channels, has long maintained that a long-term plan is required. “…the absence of a sustainable maintenance program to prevent the channels from silting back in means the benefits will be short-lived and the welfare of Delta residents at risk again,” chair John Roscoe wrote in a recent edition of the Optimist. Established in 2008, the Ladner Sediment Group worked for several years to get some of the local secondary channels dredged. Until 1998, dredging of all channels was a federal responsibility. In 1999, the port authority took over dredging of the main navi-

gational channel only. In the ensuing years, silt began to build up in many of the secondary channels. In Ladner, some areas of the river were reduced to just a few feet, leaving boats grounded and wreaking havoc on float homes, during low tides. In 2013, $10 million in funding, which included contributions from Port Metro Vancouver, Delta, Richmond and the province, was announced. The work to clear the sediment finally began last January and was completed this past March. According to the Delta staff report, in 2009 Port Metro Vancouver established a 10-year local channel contribution program to provide funding of up to $500,000 per channel, for riverfront communities to dredge secondary waterways. Delta has already used up all of its available funding and the municipality is asking the port authority to renew and continue the program until alternative funding is secured. Staff will also continue to look for long-term funding options.

Accomplished artist leaves legacies Celebration of life for Margaret Elliot at Gallery 1710 to also act as a fundraiser for Delta Hospice Society BY

NOREEN FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor

Esteemed artist Margaret Armstrong Elliot spent the last week of her life in the Irene Thomas Residence of the Delta Hospice Society, where she died Sept. 11. She had been diagnosed with brain cancer in late June, immediately following her participation in the Full Monty life drawing show at the South Delta Artists Guild Gallery 1710. With great courage matched by the support of her family, and after studying all the possibilities, she chose quality of life over the uncertainties of surgery. As she said when making her decision known: “I have had a good life.” She will be remembered with a celebration of life event hosted by her family at Gallery 1710 this Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. That life began on Nov. 12, 1931 in one of the most beautiful places in the world, since 1951 known as the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria, England. The first child of Mary and John Armstrong was born

at Paddockwray, the family sheep-farm near the tiny village of Boot. The Armstrongs also ran the nearby Woolpack Inn, on the road leading to the notoriously difficult Hardknott Pass. A small hostelry built of granite and blue slate, the inn, like Paddockwray, originated in the 16th century. The coast, mountains, lakes and passes of the area that borders Scotland gave rise to a fascinating history of settlements, invasions, raids, theft and war. Celts, Romans, Norsemen, Normans and Scots, plus assorted monarchs, all influenced the place Elliot called home. Elliot and her four siblings learned about where they lived, how sheep farms were run and crops grown, and how to help city visitors enjoy their country summers. Spurred by her natural curiosity, she studied nature, worked on her inborn artistic talent and acquired the discipline required to keep family, farm and inn functioning at their best. She took fine arts and

watercolours brought everincreasing recognition. Dene Croft, president of FCA, wrote on learning of her passing: “We have lost one of our finest.” Sandra Taylor, a three-term guild president and outstanding abstract artist, recalls her longstanding friendship FILE PHOTO with Elliot began when Late Ladner artist Margaret Elliot (left) is shown in this 2011 photo with Eileen they met Fong. through life her, and in 1990 she joined drawing sesscience at King’s College, the South Delta Artists sions and workshops. A wide selection of Elliot’s art — framed and matted paintings, drawings and sketches — is on display and can be exchanged for a donation to the Delta Hospice Society. Every donation over $20 is eligible for a charitable tax receipt. Elliot left another legacy. She was an excellent writer with an extraordinary memory who three years ago began work on a family history for her two young Tsawwassen grandchildren. Friends’ encouragement led to its submission to, and acceptance by, a Lake District publisher, and Elliot was able to design the cover, include paintings and photos, and proofread most of the 16 chapters. Native in Eskdale: Another Country by Margaret Armstrong Elliot is on its way to publication.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s been five years since we lost him, but his memory is still very much alive. Today marks a sad anniversary around here as it was on this day in 2010 that we lost a very special member of the Optimist family with the passing of Edgar Clesson Dunning. Edgar was an invaluable resource through the years given his family started this newspaper way back in 1922 when the Dunnings, including a 12-year-old newspaper man-to-be, relocated from Barons, Alberta at the invitation of the Delta Board of Trade. Edgar’s impact, however, went well beyond being able to regale us with tales of a settlement that was still decades away from being connected to the rest of the Lower Mainland by tunnel. I know a lot more about Delta thanks to Edgar’s storytelling, but it’s the way he approached life that taught me, and others, so much more. I long admired the fact he didn’t sweat the small stuff or didn’t speak ill of others, that he never turned down an invitation (or a free meal!) and that he saw the humour in what was going on around him. The crotchety old man stereotype of someone stuck in their ways and living in the past was as far from Edgar as you could get. Oh sure, he was quick to reminisce about Delta’s early days and regularly shared those recollections through his popular Rambling column, but make no mistake, he was very much a 21st century guy. His personality enabled him to embrace the computer age, which is no small feat when you’re in your 90s. For a while there he would bring his column over on a floppy disk, and although the advent of email made that unnecessary in later years, he would still visit the office almost weekly for chats I both miss and cherish. Most people don’t get the opportunity to know a centenarian, particularly one as vibrant as Edgar, so I’m lucky to have counted him as a friend and a colleague. He didn’t become an iconic figure in these parts simply because of his advanced age; it was the way he lived those 100 years that made him so special. We marveled at his quick wit, laughed at his self-deprecating humour and were continually in awe of how he conducted himself in the community. Edgar showed us how to grow old, while staying young at the same time. I keep the flag for his Rambling column on the template for this page, so twice a week when I open up the page I’m greeted by his smiling face. Not only does it give me a chance to say hello to an old friend, but it’s a reminder on how to live life.

Exploring the East Coast on both sides of 49th parallel DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Maureen and I are back from a retirement holiday in Eastern Canada and the U.S. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank Steve Graham for replacing me in this column space. But back to early October as I pen some thoughts emanating from a trip well organized by my better half. This was a venture of some complexities, with air transportation to Quebec City, a St. Lawrence River cruise, ports of call in P.E.I., Nova Scotia, Bar Harbour, Maine and then onto Boston, New York and Washington, D.C. Using Amtrak between U.S. cities was an efficient travel mode once we got the hang of it. The East Coast has a settlement history back to the 1600s so walking tours in Quebec City were a must, with a return trip to the Citadel and the Plains Of Abraham, including stops at local museums.

The St. Lawrence River cruise was outstanding in terms of quality service, surroundings and amenities. A stop in Charlottetown and a tour of its historic institutions, churches and homes were all quite revealing in the effort to project and display its settlement history and influence in Canada’s Confederation. We disembarked in Boston after our enjoyable seven-day cruise. We toured Boston’s magnificent Museum of Fine Arts featuring a collection of artist John Singer Sargent and toured the President J.F.K. museum and library, historically significant and tastefully done. We travelled by Amtrak to New York City and arrived to a sea of humanity under Madison Square Garden. The bad news was we couldn’t engage a taxi so we hoofed it, bags and all, through the crowds to our hotel. New York is a great city to visit with its theatres, museums and shopping. We got caught up in the fiasco of Donald Trump and U.S. politics (making our election look tame) plus the Pope’s tour of Washington and New York City. We exited New York the day before Pope Francis’ arrival and travelled to Washington, D.C.

Our time in Washington, D.C. was the highlight of our trip with its plethora of memorials, political history and the Smithsonian institute. We toured the Arlington sanctuary and civil war cemetery that contains thousands of white crosses marking the burial sites of enlisted men and women, and the resting place of President John F. Kennedy and family. We also toured Robert E. Lee’s mansion, which stands on top of the hill overlooking the cemetery. It is under extensive renovation thanks to a private philanthropist, providing a glimpse back in time to the Civil War. We also visited the Lincoln memorial, awash with people paying respect to the revered president. Our time in Washington was well spent, including a welcoming visit with Don North, a classmate and former Delta lad, and his wife Deanna. Their home teems with Don’s collections from broadcast and journalism travels around the globe. Our trip was a most rewarding experience and an ease into retirement. And a good night to you, Kenny. Responsibility is the key

Editor: Re: Some dog park users have trouble following the rules, letter to the editor, Oct. 2 Although the writer doesn’t actually state which park she is referring to, I am going to assume she is talking about North 40. I walk my dogs almost daily at North 40 and I agree there are rare occasions when dogs run up to you, rub against you or even jump up. There are times when another dog might decide it doesn’t like yours, or vice versa, and snarl and snap. It is difficult to predict when this is going to happen but when walking in an off-leash park such as this, I believe you have to accept

that it will happen occasionally, although I would like to see owners attempt to correct bad behaviour at the time. But the writer’s letter seems to be concerned about rules and rule breakers. I have to disagree with the writer that dog walkers should be taken to task for breaking the rules. The dog walkers that I see almost daily are among the most responsible people using the park. They clean up after their dogs in the long grass and fields, which many do not. They pack water for their dogs on hot days and make every effort to move aside and avoid overwhelming your own dogs with their numbers. They have dogs on leash

that need to be and let others run free to enjoy the park, one of the few in the Lower Mainland where any of us can do this. True, the rule says a maximum of two dogs per person. Therefore, I am guilty of having three when I pick up my daughter’s two and have my 10-year-old shepherd plodding along behind me, as is the elderly lady with her matched set of three older terriers, one sometimes in a carriage. Some rules don’t make sense and some need to be revisited. Having a limit of two dogs in a 40-acre dog wonderland like this makes no sense to me. It’s not numbers that are important but responsibility. Geof Kraemer

Not too late to keep mail delivery

Editor: I would like to congratulate Carla Qualtrough on becoming Delta’s new MP. I would also like to encourage all Delta citizens to congratulate her as well. For the many Ladner residents that are imminently close to losing their home delivery of mail, maybe you can also gently remind her that we would like to keep door-to-door mail delivery. As I look around Ladner I do not see any substantial progress with the installation of the new community mailboxes. On Sept. 24 in an article in the Campbell

River Mirror, Jon Hamilton, spokesperson for Canada Post, admitted that not all community mailboxes were in place on the implementation date of the new delivery system. I fear this will happen in Ladner at a very busy time of the year for mail volume and I foresee a nightmare ensuing. In the Oct. 16 edition of the Optimist, Qualtrough is quoted as saying, “This is an important issue for Delta. The Liberal Party will stop the Harper Conservatives’ plan to end door-to-door delivery.” In a letter dated July 9 to

then-prime minister Stephen Harper, Justin Trudeau said, “A Liberal government will stop the plan to end doorto-door mail delivery…” Residents of Ladner, there is still a chance that we can keep our door-todoor mail delivery. Please contact Qualtrough and tell her we do not want community mailboxes littering the streets but instead want to keep our home delivery. What a great start this would be for our newly elected representative and all the residents of Ladner if this decision is reversed. Daniel Lessingham

Harper’s exit will allow ‘democracy’ to return

Editor: Congratulations to Carla Qualtrough on her election victory. Geez, the Liberals won

and the sky did not fall. Life carries on. Stephen Harper had to go and now that he is gone, I am very pleased. Now we

can get back to restoring “democracy” (or maybe establishing it) in Canada again. Brian Leslie Engler

Terry

Domestic Short Hair, Black and White, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 1 year old) Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry lived outdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terry bit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned to the finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather be a friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter and can be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry would do best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understand cat body language. Terry likely will be fine as an indoor cat in his new home as long as there’s a bright window for him to stare out and watch the world go by. Can Terry get comfortable in your home?

Veterans require support of gov’t & country beyond one day a year

Editor: Re: Pay tribute to our veterans by casting a ballot next Monday, Community Comment, Oct. 14 I wanted to add a few thoughts to Brad Sherwin’s excellent column. As a United Church minister and a member of the military, it has been my experience, for the most part, that the government of Canada over the decades has provided well for Second World War and Korean War veterans. There was a large mass of them and their service in a time of world crisis received the support they deserved through their lives. The face of the future veteran will look very different. They are now younger — male and female, of other nationalities and religions. Many veterans are now in their 30s or 40s, having served for a time in the full-or part-time military and choosing not to make that a life career have moved on. They are a smaller quadrant of the population. Since the early 1990s massive numbers of reservists have served in Canada on domestic operations and on overseas deployments. As we look down the road with the now no longer New Veteran’s Charter, we wonder what the future will hold if we find ourselves in

the position of needing support through Veteran’s Affairs for issues related to our military service. We have watched our brothers and sisters visibly wounded during their military service fight for benefits. Diagnosing PTSD is complex and symptoms can appear years down the road for veterans long past the end of their miliFILE PHOTO tary service. Rev. Jim Short is calling for greater We all know the support for a new era of Canadian dreaded words those veterans. who have repeatwho are homeless, those in edly knocked on door need of social support, and for help and have heard: those who are unemployed “Sorry, we don’t think that issue is due to your military and disabled. Over the years I have service.” Reservists are sensed a systematic change too well versed in the “we in our society — or perhaps needed you when we needit was always thus. The ed you” but now you are Christian Scriptures refer out your injuries and issues to it as the “hardness of don’t count the same way the heart.” The rise in our they do for regular force prosperity in North America members. seems to have hardened I went to war and came our hearts to those in need home with some mental rather than softening them and physical issues that I and increasing our compasdidn’t deploy with. Though documented, I often wonder sion and generosity. It is the inevitable out— 10, 20 years down the come of a society where road — if I and my spouse we believe everyone makes need support can I trust the bed they lie on and if the government to respond you can’t work, make it on sympathetically and possiyour own and fit in, you do bly positively. not deserve a decent level The issue, though, is of care. In my faith, Jesus larger than veterans and came to soften up those their care. It includes those

hard hearts of ours. You may think I am overstating the case. Yet how many times have I met with someone who spoke of feeling shamed, dishonoured or treated as if they were trying to rip off the system? I wonder at times what has happened to beginning conversations with those needing help with compassionate listening. We toss around lightly that “we are our brothers’ and sisters’ keeper” and “do not judge someone till you walk a mile in their shoes.” What does that really mean in a country like ours that seems stuck on how to bring in displaced persons, raise social assistance rates to reflect adequate shelter costs or pay lifelong pensions to families whose loved ones have died in military service? This Remembrance Day we will, as we should, appropriately honour those who died in military service. Yet to paraphrase a well-known saying, “The dead have seen the end of war — it is the living who still suffer.” It’s the living veterans now and into the future whose war lives with them that require the support of their country and government beyond one day a year. Maj. the Rev. Jim Short

Reach Child & Youth Development Society was selected by 100 Women Who Care Vancouver to receive a donation of $4,300 last month. 100 Women Who Care Vancouver is a membership-based group that donates money to charities, non-profit and grassroots organizations in the Lower Mainland. Organizations are nominated by and voted on by members, who then write a $100 cheque on the spot. One hundred per cent goes to charity as there are no administration fees. The women meet four times a year for an hour and together they aim to raise $40,000-plus annually for charity. Reach Foundation director Tanya Corbet spoke at the newly launched chapter in Vancouver, whose inaugural meeting was attended

by 43 women. Corbet’s winning speech referenced the progress her nephew has made due to Reach early intervention services. “Tanya’s heartfelt story about the services her family received from Reach sincerely impacted the audience,” said Reach fundraising manager Joni Wright, who attended the event Charlene Fekeshazy, founding chair of 100 Women Who Care Vancouver, shared that the group wants to be a part of a community that believes in the spirit of giving. “There are so many groups that are working to make our community a better, healthier, stronger place to live that don’t get all the funding they need to achieve their operating goals,” Fekeshazy said. Reach will direct the funds to its Building for Children Together cam-

Building bridges You may think I’m going to talk about the new bridge that has been promised to replace the Massey Tunnel from Richmond to South Delta, but you would be wrong. I can understand the assumption what with the very recent round of political promises that have swept “Red” across our country and caused the markets to bounce all over in anticipation. Undoubtedly there will be generous political capital spent to build goodwill bridges into communities everywhere in a “better” Canada. No, the kind of bridges I wish to contemplate here are those connections among neighbours, community members, diverse age ranges and possible daily interactions that are best built through one-to-one greetings, conversations and invitations to

stand on common ground. They are not dependant on technology; in fact, encouraging and learning basic, old fashioned skills may promise to create something beautiful, joyful and meaningful. Just such a bridge was built, or at least started, today when an SDSS art class met face-to-face with seniors in the community. The whole goal was to have conversation about each other’s life experience and interests that will result in a series of portraits being created. The simple gift of learning how to draw, and eventually sharing the results, celebrated by each student/ senior pair will be another occasion to share conversation and encouragement. These are the kinds of bridges we should all seek to build each day.

Exercise solutions: Create a gym at home KRISTA POPOWYCH Finding time to workout is often a challenge. Exercising at home is an efficient way

to fit in a quick exercise session any time of day.

— with or without equipment.

Plus countless workouts can be done in any small space

Before getting started, decide where in your house is the best location for your home gym. If possible, keep your equipment handy and visKrista ible. A basket loaded up with resistance bands, dumbbells, and a yoga mat is significantly more motivating when seen daily versus hidden in a closet.

To get started, break your workout into three parts — warm up, conditioning and stretching. An at-home warm up may include walking on the spot, climbing stairs or grooving to your Popowych favourite tunes. The goal of the warm up is to prepare your body for more intense exercise. Everybody is different. Determine the amount of warm up time that is best for you, based on how you feel.

Next, decide what type of workout interests you. For example, do you need to improve strength, burn calories or increase flexibility, or all of the above?

Because some exercise is always better than nothing, choose one goal as a starting part. If not knowing what to do is another roadblock, don’t despair; a myriad of at-home workouts can be found on-line or in print.

Conditioning includes both cardiovascular training and strength work. If you have a piece of cardio equipment tucked away in the garage or being used as a clothes rack in your bedroom, dust it off and get started. Plan for 10 minutes initially and build from there. No cardio equipment? No problem. Any movements such as jumping jacks, skipping, jogging or marching on the

Strength work is probably the most conducive to an at-home workout space. A small investment in pieces such as resistance bands, flat tubing, dumbbells, medicine balls, balance boards or stability balls is all that is required. Even empty milk jugs filled with water can become excellent at-home weights.

Creating an at-home gym is a fantastic way to move into fall with a plan in place. Because you may be working out alone or just getting started, be sure to get the thumbs-up from your physician to exercise.

Begin slowly. Determine the number of reps you think you can do. If you achieve the goal without any problem, keep going. The objective is to feel your muscles working. Whether you are doing bicep curls or sit ups, some discomfort in those areas means the muscles are firing and fatiguing. Pain is always a signal to stop.

And if you aren’t quite ready to get off the couch, that’s OK too. There are lots of exercises you can do while sitting.

Finish your workout with a good stretch. A yoga mat, foam roller, or yoga strap are additional pieces to add to the at-home tool box. No gear? Grab a towel for a mat, a small ball for pressure point

Peanuts not really nuts

Did you know? Peanut butter is a nutritious food that can be served in sandwiches, as a dip or as an ingredient for flavourful sauces. Peanut butter also can be enjoyed by the spoonful right out of the container. Peanut plants are rather interesting. Unlike many plants, the peanut flowers form above ground, but the fruit — the peanuts — grow below the soil by the roots. Peanuts do not grow on trees and really aren’t nuts at all. They’re actually legumes.

Early Halloween fun Annual Family Fright Fest set for next Wednesday in Ladner

BY

DAVE WILLIS

B

oo! All Hallows’ Eve isn’t here yet but some spooky fun can be had as the annual Family Fright Fest in Ladner takes place next Wednesday. The free family Halloween celebration once again takes place at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre, McKee heritage home and the surrounding area. “It’s going to be another great event,” says Delta recreation program coordinator Kelly Wilson, adding she’s hoping the weather will be kind. Pumpkin carving will be a new component to this year’s Fright Fest. Wilson explains that Save-OnFoods has come on board and that pumpkins will be sold for $5 with all proceeds going to the B.C. Children’s Hospital. She adds there will be a limited amount of pumpkins. McKee seniors are involved in Family Fright Fest once again and the fun at seniors’ centre includes trick-or-treating. There will also be hayrides (where spooky stories will be told), the Delta Fire Safety House, crafts, a live DJ, dancers, food and more. Local high school students will be turning the McKee heritage home into a haunted house and this year’s theme is based on Thriller, Michael Jackson’s famous song and music video. “This one’s really been a lot of fun,” says South Delta Secondary teacher Jennifer Harbott.

FILE PHOTO

Youngsters will be trick-or-treating at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre next Wednesday as part of Family Fright Fest.

She says students are recreating the music video and there will be a musical montage tribute to Jackson outside to entertain those lined up for the haunted house. Students, dressed up as cinema staff from the

1980s, will act as tour guides and take visitors through the house. They’re having a blast working on the haunted house project, Harbott notes. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to be involved

in the community in such an interactive way. They really have the opportunity to be creative,” she says. There will be tickets for the haunted house available at a tent between the Boys and Girls Club and McKee, Wilson notes.

Family Fright Fest is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. There will be a road closure on 47th Avenue between Arthur Drive and 51st Street from 4 to 8 p.m. The haunted house will also be open next Thursday

beginning at 6 p.m. Harbott describes it as a teen night and encourages an older audience to come. Harbott adds other teachers involved in the project include Danielle Hamilton, Kate Prefontaine and Jackie Gaspar.

Author to lead ElderCollege Delta presentation

ElderCollege Delta has a free community presentation scheduled for next month in Ladner. ElderCollege Delta is pleased to present a little known aspect of B.C. his-

tory based on the investigation of presenter, Peter Johnson, resulting in his book, Voyages of Hope: The Saga of the Bride-Ships. This fascinating and factual historical account is

based on extensive research outlining the social, economic and political climate of the gold rush period, its impact on the then burgeoning colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia

and the contributions made by the influx of Victorian England’s Bride-Ships carrying courageous and hopeful new life. Artifacts on display will include one of the actual

dresses and a few corsets, worn by an 1862 bride-ship member Louisa Townsend. The presentation is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th

Ave., Ladner. To register call ElderCollege Delta at 604-943-0262 or email eldercollegedelta@kinvillage.org. The presentation is open to all ages.

Women of all ages need to strength train Avoid plateaus by increasing intensity and adding variety

p.j. wren

Well on Your Way

H

ippocrates once said, “That which is used develops and that which is not used wastes away,” which translated into 21st century-speak is, “If you don’t move it, you lose it.” Both quotes are relevant when it comes to the human body, or more specifically, to our muscles. If we don’t use our muscles, we lose our muscles, it’s that simple. And if you are a woman, this is even more frightening because we don’t start with a lot of muscle mass. This loss in muscle mass has a detrimental affect on our ability to burn fat

(because the more muscle we have, the better at burning calories we become) as well as our general strength and our bone density. Lifting weights will also help reduce our risk of heart disease, diabetes, back pain and arthritis, and it will aid in fighting depression and improve our moods. But what should we be doing and how much should we be lifting? Teens should aim for two to three times a week strength training, working at 50 to 60 per cent of their repetition maximum (take the amount of weight you can lift once and multiple that by 50 to 60 per cent). Begin with easy movement patterns, because strength training (and maybe even exercise itself) could be new to you. This will help to create body awareness and in turn better form. While lifting, target the

core and postural muscles. presses and push ups). per cent of your repetition maximum. I find women in this age bracket tend to see more success when working with a trainer, or attending group classes geared towards strength training. Areas to target are your balance, posture, core and upper body muscles, and as you get closer to your 70s and 80s include grip strength as well (to help you open all those jars and bags in your kitchen). Once you start your strength training routine it will only take the muscles about two months to adapt to that particular training routine. This is great news for beginners. You will see results quickly. However, once that adaptation has occurred (and if you continue with that same exercise program), you will eventually encounter an “exercise plateau.”

You are now maintaining instead of developing. To avoid any plateaus in your program, add a variety of exercises and keep increasing your intensity as you get fitter. You need to keep the muscles confused and the mind stimulated to continue to see growth and to keep yourself motivated. And one last thing, ladies, please do not be afraid to pick up the heavier dumbbells as you get stronger. They will not turn you into a muscle-bound freak. I promise. Instead, they will turn you into a stronger, fitter and more confident woman — no matter what your age. PJ Wren is a personal trainer and writer in the Delta area who loves teaching women to lift. You can find her at www.fitnesswithpj.com and catch all her workouts for women on her YouTube channel.

GOUGH, Gerald Francis

BOWLING, Isabella “Pearl” (nee McCulloch) Embraced by the love of her family at her bedside, Isabella ‘Pearl’ Bowling (nee McCulloch) passed away peacefully on October 8, 2015 at Peace Arch Hospital. Pearl was born April 19, 1922 to Newt and Fannie McCulloch on the western shore of Boundary Bay at the east end of Brandrith Road (now 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen). She spent many happy hours at the beach playing with her dog Maggie, soaring high on her grandparent’s swing and swimming in the bay. Swimming was a passion she enjoyed all her life. In June 1935, she and her family moved to their new house on 16th Avenue. After graduating from King George High School in Ladner, Pearl worked at the Beach Grove Store during the early war years. Being good with people and numbers she enjoyed various jobs in retail, finishing as manager of the 5 and 10 store in Ladner. Her first date with Earl Bowling was New Years Eve 1949 and so began their happy life together. They were married June 8, 1951 at Ladner United Church. Pearl excelled as a wife and mother and in 1957 the family moved into their newly built home on 16th Avenue. Pearl and Earl remained there until their deaths. Pearl was a past member of St. David’s Anglican Guild, Evergreen Garden Club and Thursday morning bowling league. She and Earl spent many hours on the Prairie Drift of the Fraser River near Ladner on their gillnetter the “Queen Bee”. She loved to travel, and visited Alaska, the Maritimes, California, Mexico, Hawaii and New Zealand numerous times. Although macular degeneration eventually robbed her of eyesight, she remained independent into her 90th year. She loved her flower garden and her wild birds, and grumbled about “ those darn squirrels “ that dined at her bird feeder. Pearl was predeceased by the love of her life, husband Earl (2006), parents Newt and Fannie McCulloch (nee Pearce) and sisters Iowa Hagen and Marie Cortner. Left behind to miss her dearly, but forever grateful she was their mother are son Colin (JoAnne) of Kenora ON, grandson James (Chelsea) and great grandson Adler; son Jack (Brien) of Prince George; son Brad (Holly) of Tsawwassen, granddaughters Haylee and Erin (Mark); and daughter Heather Peard (Brian) of Hastings N.Z., grandson Christopher and granddaughter Monique. Fondly remembered by sisters-in-law Jean, Mary-Helen and Judy, and brother-in-law Wally. Pearl also leaves a large loving circle of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. “Auntie Pearl” was a favourite who never had a bad word to say about anyone. She welcomed everybody at her Sunday afternoon teatime gatherings. She was a joy and inspiration and will be missed by all who knew her.

Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. WRIGHT, Audrey Elizabeth (née Craig) Audrey Elizabeth Wright (née Craig), of Tsawwassen, BC, died in peace on September 11, 2015 at the Fraser Valley Centre of the BC Cancer Agency in Surrey, BC.

If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the:

Audrey was predeceased by her parents: Erle Montgomery and Myrtle Jean Craig; by two of her six children: A Craig Wright and Michael Wright; by her three siblings: sister Shirley Mahoney and brothers Dr.Charles E Craig and J Douglas Craig. She is survived by Richard (Dick), her ever-loving husband of 64 years; by her four adoring children: Sandra McKerrell (and David); Alison Wright (and Maurice Bourassa); Charles Wright (and Christie Stoll) and Malcolm Wright (Sarah McKee); by her eleven so-loved grandchildren: Dougal Wright; Katy BourassaWright (and Graham With); Callum Wright (and Rachel); Casey Troop (and Jay); Niko Bourassa-Wright; Shauna Garside (and Kirby); Phaedra Bourassa-Wright; Alannah Wright (and Brad Rossington); Sophie McKee-Wright; Griffin Wright; and Liam McKee-Wright; by her three truly remarkable, great-grandchildren: Mckinley Garside; Alexander Wright and Haleigh Troop; and by Olive and ED Puss. Audrey is also survived by nine children of her siblings and by relatives in California and on PEI. Audrey was born in Vancouver on January 28th, 1931; grew up in Vancouver, living on Cypress Crescent and attending Prince of Wales Elementary and High School, until 1946, and then in Pasadena, California, where she attended and graduated from Pasadena City College. Back again in Vancouver, she studied fashion design, assisted brother Charles in establishing his new Orthodontic practice and, along with her mother, oversaw construction of their new home at 32nd and Hudson - all the while being courted by Richard, whom she married in 1951 and contentedly put up with for the rest of her life. In 1956, the Wright family of four, at the time, moved away from Vancouver, to Edmonton, where they learned about not living close to the sea and mountains, about winter severities, about Prairie life, oil boom-townitus and Socreds, and where they became a family of five. In 1960, they relocated to Ancaster, Ontario, a suburb of Hamilton, for a two year stint, which was sufficient to experience many aspects of life in Ontario, particularly on the Niagara Peninsula, and to increase to a family group of six. In 1962, they moved on to exurban Hudson, Quebec, thirty-five miles west of Montreal, and into their century-old ‘Edgemere’ on le lac de Deux Montagnes, where they remained for eight years. In Hudson, Audrey endured a final family expansion, but pregnancy did not hinder her active pursuits in numerous arts and crafts, of voracious reading and anecdotal essay writing, of imaginative sewing and creative needlework projects, of gourmet cooking and gracious entertaining, of overseeing constant house renovations, of child rearing and household managing, and, as always, of looking beautiful. In 1970, the now family of seven moved enthusiastically from idyllic exurbia to the stimulating, cultural urbanity of Westmount, in the heart of Montréal, where Audrey continued, ever more confidently, the pursuit of her numerous, creative endeavors and where, in the Fall of 1970, the group’s urban life experience was coloured by Montréal’s October Crisis. A great many enduring friendships were shaped in Hudson and Westmount. In 1972, Audrey and Dick, along with their five offspring, returned to Vancouver, where many ancient, close friendships were to be rekindled and many new ones created and where closer ties with relatives and family members were to be reestablished. It was Audrey’s gregarious friendliness that eased renewal. It was back in Vancouver, also on Salt Spring Island and later, upon moving to Tsawwassen in 1990, that Audrey’s creative, artistic spirit came more and more to be focused upon that wonderous world of quilting and, following a stimulating Creative Writing course at Langara College, upon her writing.

Later in life, she accepted the challenges and discomforts of aging with courage, dignity and her ever-present sparkle of humour; towards the end, she endured more than her fair share of medical distress without loss of aplomb [except for those damned stairs].

Audrey will be remembered by all who knew her as a gracious, generous, compassionate and loyal friend; as an enthusiastic and accomplished creator of quilt and needle works and of the written word; as an exceptional, most loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother; and as a loyal, much-cherished companion and pal, a wife extraordinaire!

Audrey expressed the wish that, in lieu of flowers, donation to favorite charities be considered.

Artistically, Audrey was a highly innovative and creative, a painstaking perfectionist who was gifted with a refined sense of colour. Her writings exhibited her acute senses of humour, irony and colouring. The legacies she left from her quilting, her writing and other artistic pursuits are joyful to experience. Socially, Audrey was ever a cherished friend, a caring, generous, graciouslyspirited person who managed to inspire her sense of enthusiasm for life in others.
