The number of out-of-district student athletes the hockey academy is attracting was evident during this May’s Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, which saw nine players selected, highlighted by Alberta native Ty Smith being taken No. 1 overall by the Spokane Chiefs.
They’ve become a big part of the Delta school district’s identity. Aimed at not only retaining students but also attracting out-of-district kids, the number of academies, and students enrolled in them, has steadily grown in recent years, providing a greater variety of academic choices as well as an important source of revenue. This year, 499 students are in a dozen academies, a number that includes 60 from out of district. Breathalyzer going to pot Ladner man getting closer to developing roadside screening device for police use JESSICA KERR
j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A local man’s efforts to create a breathalyzer to test for marijuana are getting closer to having the device in the hands of police. Ladner’s Kal Malhi, a retired RCMP officer, has been working on developing a roadside breathalyzer since last year. In August, his company, Cannabix Technologies, signed an agreement with the Yost Research Group at the University of Florida. The partners have developed a prototype and begun testing. Malhi said right now they’re getting accurate readings about 80 per cent of the time and the team is working to refine the system to reach 100 per cent accuracy. “Our partnership with the Yost Research Group and the University of
Florida immediately diversifies Cannabix’s portfolio of breath testing technologies for THC,” he said after the partnership was announced. “Our new partnership boosts our ability to deliver a durable, portable hand-held tool to the market to help detect marijuana impaired driving offences on our SUBMITTED PHOTO roads at a time Testing is now underway on a prototype of a roadside breathwhen marijuana is alyzer for marijuana. becoming legal in Currently, marijuana breath testing technology many jurisdictions use can only be detected developed at Karolinska globally.” by testing blood, urine University in Solna. With an increasing number of U.S. states legalizing marijuana sales, and the new Liberal government’s campaign promise to do the same here, Malhi said the technology is more urgently needed to enforce road safety and crack down on drivers impaired by the drug.
Opera academy still requires approval of trustees
CONTINUED from Page 1 Paige Hansen, the district’s vice-principal of academies, said a lot of amazing things are happening at Delta’s academies. Hansen told the school board last week that plans are in the works to create an opera and performance academy for the 2016/17 school year, a plan that must still get approval from trustees. “When we think of kids, we don’t normally think of opera, but I can assure you
there is a huge appetite in Delta for theatre, music, musical theatre. Really, opera is North America’s, let’s say, cousin of musical theatre,” she said. “A kid at this age doesn’t necessarily have to sing opera, but they can go through the creative process of engaging in music and theatre. So it’s a really neat opportunity we’re developing for them.” Also in the works are plans to expand the softball academy to DSS and develop a sustainable
agriculture academy, which would be based out of SDSS and would use classroom space at the old Boundary Beach Elementary site. Assistant superintendent Doug Sheppard recently told the Delta council/Delta school board liaison committee the district is hoping to provide the municipality with a business plan soon and start discussions around what may be available in terms of land. The district is hoping to
pilot something next fall either at the Southlands or perhaps on plots at the Tsawwassen First Nation. The Delta school board has heavily involved itself with academies to make up for a steady enrollment decline, which has had negative consequences for the district’s operating budget. Enrollment, however, is starting to level off, which means additional revenues coming from academies can be directed to other areas instead of simply helping offset

losses. Not all the academies have been as successful, though. The board partnered with the Vancouver Whitecaps a few years ago to create a soccer academy at North Delta Secondary, but that relationship fizzled and the program was cancelled. Bursaries and financial assistance are available for those wanting to enroll in an academy. The school district created a website to promote its academies at deltaacademies.ca.

Terry
Domestic Short Hair, Black and White, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 1 year old) Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry lived outdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terry bit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned to the finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather be a friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter and can be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry would do best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understand cat body language. Terry likely will be fine as an indoor cat in his new home as long as there’s a bright window for him to stare out and watch the world go by. Can Terry get comfortable in your home?

$6 million in improvements set to begin for Delta Street Parking spots will be harder to find in village come January SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Expect a harder time than usual finding a parking spot in Ladner Village next year. A major utility, streetscape upgrade and beautification project is scheduled to commence in January on Delta Street. Costing over $6 million, the work will stretch from 48th Avenue to Chisholm Street and include new sidewalks, street lighting, new pavement as well as a watermain replacement. Work is expected to continue into the fall. The end result will also see a decorative pedestrian plaza at the intersection of Delta and Bridge streets, decorative stamped/coloured pedestrian crosswalks at intersections as well as new bicycle racks, benches, decorative bollards, banner poles and
garbage receptacles. “We’ve been in touch with the business community and what we’re going to do is have it done blockby-block,” said municipal engineering director Stephen Lan said. “That way it will minimize the impacts of construction for merchants and people can use the sidewalks again and also park their vehicles. The inconvenience will be a shorter duration for each block.” Trees will be replaced as roots are pushing up several street panels, a source of concern for the municipality as people have tripped on them. Drainage problems have also resulted from uneven sidewalks. Lan said new trees will be planted with root barrier systems. “We’re kind of constrained by the root ball, but we are going to try to
find as good a size replacement as we can,” he said. Delta’s engineering department is inviting the public to comment on the Delta Street Roadway Revitalization Project and has a feedback form that can be filled out until Dec. 15. The project, along with other upcoming Delta infrastructure work, will be featured at a public open house from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3 at the Harris Barn. The project is part of the much bigger Delta Neighbourhood Road Improvements Plan, which was introduced in 2012 to address aging roads and sidewalks. Also part of that larger initiative, and scheduled for next year, is the first phase of work on Arthur Drive, from 44th Avenue to Augustine House, which will see streetscape

improvements that include a new sidewalk, better bike lanes, new pavement and street lights. The next phase, from Augustine House to Deltaport Way, will include pullouts at bus stops. The 4800-block of 48th Avenue will get a new sidewalk and other improvements in 2017. Projects already completed include the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive and the area near 48th Avenue and Garry Street. Lan said Delta would look at other street and road upgrade opportunities in Ladner and Tsawwassen as part of the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy, a major initiative aimed at helping Delta’s business community adapt to life once the Tsawwassen First Nation mega malls open next year.

Murphy’s Law
I
TED MURPHY
’d like to offer belated congratulations to Carla Qualtrough, who was one of just three B.C. MPs named to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet last week. As a former medal-winning Paralympic swimmer and human rights lawyer, our new Liberal MP is well qualified to handle the role of minister of sport and persons with disabilities, so it was heartening to see the prime minister bestow that responsibility on her. It’s hard to believe that at this time last year Qualtrough was campaigning for a seat on the Delta school board and now she’s a member of the federal cabinet, but if there’s anything to be taken from those turn of events it’s the fact that a lot of good people get lost in the sea of candidates in a municipal election. As much as it’s a feather in the cap to be selected to cabinet as a rookie MP, I was pleased to hear to Qualtrough say that serving Delta will always be her main job. I was even more impressed when she backed up those words with actions right away. Hours after being sworn in as a cabinet minister, Qualtrough was hit with news that the installation of community mailboxes in Ladner would proceed despite her party’s desire for a moratorium and Canada Post’s announcement it was putting the brakes on the program. Because the Canada Post announcement only applied to installations for November and beyond, and because Ladner’s conversion was scheduled to take place in mid-October, she was told, as we were, that it would be going ahead, even though it was already November and no boxes had been installed yet. Qualtrough didn’t buy the bizarre logic and was already escalating her response to the issue when word came down that Ladner would indeed be included in the moratorium and retain its home delivery, at least for the time being. I spoke with her from Ottawa as she was busy returning calls late one night and during that conversation I joked with her that it could go south in a hurry if an MP didn’t look after things on the home front. The rest of Canada may want a piece of you, but it’s the people of Delta that ultimately determine whether you remain in office. She assured me she’s acutely aware of that situation.
Electoral process looks good after undergoing scrutiny
W
e’ve all experienced the election process, some first hand as candidates, others in supporting roles as office staff, sign makers, strategists, et al. Like most communityminded folks on election day, we dutifully attend a polling station and cast a ballot for our favourite candidate(s). This latter process is a brief but necessary ritual. I’m one of those who believe voters should attend a public facility to register their choice of candidate under public watch. Mobile polls address senior and disability issues, thus facilitating voting opportunity. During last month’s federal election, Maureen and I offered our services as scrutineers. I found the experience fascinating and time well spent. Voter turnout has steadily dropped since the Second World War for all levels of government. Curious about the day ahead, I drove around to various polling stations at 7 a.m. and noted heavy car and pedestrian traffic. It appeared voter interest was up as supported by the advanced polls. Was change in the air or the increase a product of a close election and well organized campaign activity? I attended Hawthorne Elementary and relieved the

morning shift, spending the rest of the day observing/scrutineering voter activity and the meticulous hand count of ballots and documentation of results. Scrutineers are volunteers representing party and candidate interest that help validate the integrity of the voting process. One could expect there might be awkwardness between party representatives. Not so. I found all scrutineers responsible and conscientious in their duties yet affable and approachable. Together we could observe the ebb and flow of voter activity. The odd hold up or registration error was handled promptly and courteously by paid supervisory staff. Voting activity remained heavy and constant. There was a prevailing sense of purpose in those people waiting patiently to cast their ballot. The reason would
soon become self-evident. I didn’t get a sense there was a dramatic increase in the young voter turnout but statistical analysis might prove otherwise. Inside the polling station the party representatives were optimistic about their candidates’ success, perhaps less so about the national scene. The Eastern time zone was a bit of a distraction as we neared our 7 p.m. closing hour. The last couple cast their ballots to a standing ovation as they exited the premises. The ballot boxes were opened under scrutiny and the count got underway. There were 10 boxes to be counted of some 4,000 ballots. Within minutes the local trend was clear. Unbeknownst to many inside the polling station, CBC was declaring a Liberal government before B.C. polls closed. Before our count was posted, concession speeches locally and nationally had occurred. Provincial closing times require better co-ordination to ensure potential voters are not influenced by other jurisdictions. A good day to observe participatory democracy at work and witness a civil exchange in federal governance. And a good night to you, Jim. Claggett legacy includes ElderCollege Editor: Re: Community loses a champion, Nov. 6 How sad to read about Ann Claggett’s passing. Our experience with Ann’s leadership was through her duties as founding chair of ElderCollege Delta beginning 12 years ago. Through Ann’s dogged determination, we were able to have local venues offered at no charge and all our presenters, mostly retired educators, were coaxed to offer their services at no charge in order
for seniors to enjoy learning without having to take examinations or travel outside of their own community. She was adamant that we could provide a solid program with donated time and space. ElderCollege Delta is the only third age learning organization not attached to a post-secondary institution in the Lower Mainland; consequently volunteers do the mail outs, registration, recruiting of presenters and other components without the assistance common to
other senior educational organizations. All instructors and presenters give freely of their time. The selection of programming has widened since the years of Ann’s involvement and we have been able to take advantage of venues donated in a variety of locations locally, providing easy access by public transit, foot or by car. Our celebrated choir was one of Ann’s innovations as a publicity arm and the ElderCollege Singers continue to pro-
vide much pleasure to seniors. All this was put into action with a team of volunteers under Ann’s bold leadership. Many years later ElderCollege Delta is a learning community with a current membership of 350 students over the age of 50. We see ElderCollege Delta as a legacy created by Ann Claggett that continues to grow in size and excellence. Karel Ley ElderCollege Delta

Lack of compliance reduces shore power benefits
Editor: The latest public relations TV ad by Port Metro Vancouver about shore power and our quality of life doesn’t tell the whole story. The port’s new ad featuring the cruise ship facility at Canada Place is very misleading. It is true they have installed shore power at Canada Place but fail to mention that only about 30 per cent of visiting cruise ships have shore power capability. Those
ships that do are often brought in on the wrong side of the dock, which defeats the electrical hook up for shore power. The rest of the cruise ship industry uses different technology to address air and noise pollution and has no plans to install shore power infrastructure now or in the future. The story gets even worse when we discover that neither the port nor Transport Canada have set down regulations, time-
lines and/or deadlines for shore power compliance at Canada Place. In Delta, the Deltaport container terminal recently announced a shore power project for one of its three berths. This air and noise pollution prevention expenditure was announced about three or four months ago. Again we see no regulations, timeline or deadlines for compliance at Deltaport. It is clear that Port Metro Vancouver has
spent a large sum at Canada Place and Deltaport for shore power capability without any compliance deadlines. It continues to appear the port is happy to subject the citizens of Delta and Greater Vancouver to a major source of air and noise pollution now and well into the future. Does anyone truly believe that Port Metro Vancouver is improving our quality of life? Don Paulsen
Minister deflects when questioned about new bridge Editor: Re: Lack of information on bridge concerns MLA, Nov. 4 The transportation minister’s comments about government transparency on the George Massey Tunnel replacement are simply an attempt to deflect the main issue. My office requested
the business case, briefing notes and technical data that supported the replacement options chosen for public consultation. We were told there were no records. Linking us to public websites and 15 pages of dated traffic data was not an answer to our question. Optimist columnist
Ian Robertson requested “documents, data, analysis prepared for the premier to allow her to determine and to announce that the Massey Tunnel would be replaced by a bridge over the Fraser River.” He was told there were no records. Government has either failed to disclose, or — perhaps worse — to keep,
internal records supporting the decision to build a bridge. In my opinion, the issue is simple: the public has a right to transparent decisions that are supported by good data and sound financial analysis. We have a right to a paper trail. Vicki Huntington, MLA Delta South
Problem could have been avoided by online postings Editor: Such needless embarrassment! MLA Vicki Huntington and Delta resident Ian Robertson each made freedom of information requests of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for information they believed should exist supporting the announced location
of the George Massey Tunnel replacement bridge. Consultations leading to that decision are reported on the ministry website, but more information is yet to be prepared. The ministry apparently responded that the information requested does not exist, neglecting to add that information not
subject to an FOI is on its website. The result was an uproar in the legislature yielding unfortunate columns and letters in both the Vancouver Sun and the Delta Optimist. This should have been avoided by the ministry posting a summary project schedule on its website. Those interested could have learned what
work has been completed and posted, and when remaining tasks will be completed and the results either posted or available by FOI. Surely there must be such a schedule. The 2017 start of construction has for months been advertised alongside Highway 17. Ed Ries
Store congratulated for putting emphasis on what’s truly important Editor: I would like to thank The Blue Door Interiors for its wonderful window display in honour of Remembrance Day and its
decision not to Christmas decorate until after Nov. 11. Maybe more shops will do the same next year. What is more important:
honouring those who fought for our freedom or starting our Christmas shopping? Also, Nov. 28 is “Shop Your Neighbourhood” and

Tsawwassen Rotarians John Charbonneau, Alex and Matt Wood, Leslie Abramson, Garry Shearer, Rick and Sonja Sullivan, and Tyler Coe gleaned 1,100 pounds of potatoes in less than 60 minutes on a recent Saturday morning. They will deliver about 250 pounds to the South Delta Food Bank each week for four weeks. The potatoes have been generously donated by Peter Guichon. Club members are hoping to have another gleaning in late November.
Members of Rotary International have been working on the eradication of polio for over 30 years. Peter Johnson leads ElderCollege presentation About 130 people were spellbound by Peter Johnson’s descriptions of the poor conditions women faced on bride-ships during an ElderCollege Delta presentation last Saturday in Ladner. The author of Voyages of Hope: The Saga of the Bride-Ships, Johnson told the crowd at Cedar Park Church about the plight of young women being sent from the U.K. under the auspices of religious organizations. He detailed the frightening circumstances of young females landing by ship after three months on the high seas with no washing facilities, then being herded through troughs of showering stalls surrounded by men gawking at them in their nakedness. There was much laughter and astonishment as several persons, following a script provided by Johnson, told of their experiences upon landing.
A last-minute addition to the program was the inclusion of Ivan Sayer, past curator or the Vancouver Museum, who shared some of his private collection items pertaining to the bride-ships. Sayer has the largest collection of period costumes from 1700 in Canada.

Jesus is a person that loves you and knows you. In fact He knows everything about you, and that’s
a good thing. He is the Good Shepherd who loves and protects His sheep. In John 10:27 He said, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. Jesus is the loving Shepherd that offers eternal life just for the asking. By repenting of sin and believing that He died for our sins, we can be in a real and vital relationship with Him forever. It was wonderful to be greeted by name at a local business. It’s even better to be known by the Son of God.

One of the things I enjoy most about living in our city is that people know each other by name. I recently walked into a local business and was greeted with a cheerful: “Hi Paul!” That may seem like a small thing, but it meant a lot. Each of has a God-given desire to be known and loved. We are meant to live in community. We are meant to be in relationship. Unfortunately, as we live in an increasingly fragmented society, more and more people find themselves isolated and alone.

The 21st annual Realtors Care Blanket Drive kicks off next week at several South Delta locations. Each year, the Lower Mainland’s largest and longest-running blanket drive provides warm clothing and blankets to more than 19,000 residents in need. From Nov. 16 to 23, volunteer realtors across the region will work with their clients to coordinate donations of blankets and
warm winter clothing for those most in need. The donations are then sorted and delivered to charities in the same community in which they are collected. “Every community in the Lower Mainland relies on donations from the program and we need the public’s support once again to ensure we can meet this year’s need,” said Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver presi-
dent Darcy McLeod. Local real estate offices accepting donations include: • Sutton Group-Seafair Realty, 100-5000 Bridge St., Ladner • Re/Max Progroup Realty, 5360-12th Ave., Tsawwassen • Royal LePage Regency Realty, 1333-56th St., Tsawwassen • Sutton Group-Seafair Realty, 1625-56th St., Tsawwassen

Treatment areas will be restricted to infestations of Spartina on cobble beaches, salt marshes and intertidal mudflats (at low tide) located in Boundary Bay, Robert’s Bank and Burrard Inlet, but treatment may expand over the course of the permit period to include sites at Sturgeon Banks and on the central east coast of Vancouver Island, including Comox, Courtenay, Deep Bay, Denman Island, Hornby Island and Sea Island. The total area proposed for this herbicide treatment is a maximum of 22 hectares annually, spread across more than 17,000 coastal hectares. Pesticide applications will consist only of the herbicide called Habitat (active ingredient: imazapyr), which will be applied to selected sites within the areas identified above using handheld spray bottles, backpack sprayers or mounted sprayers. Pesticide applications will complement existing and ongoing mechanical removal methods. Proposed duration of this pesticide use is from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2019. Sunday at 3! set to start New concert series begins next weekend at Ladner United Church
L
adner United Church kicks off its Sunday at 3! concert series next weekend. The format will include a concert and art exhibit in the same place at the same time. Concerts will be varied in content, always striving to be “audience friendly,” and last approximately 90 minutes, including intermission. The visual art will be displayed in the narthex (lobby) and will be available for viewing before and after the concert as well as
during the intermission. The visual artist will be in attendance to provide information about the art being shown. The debut event will feature Ladner residents Chloe Meyers and Alex Weimann as performing artists, who both have performing and teaching careers that take them throughout the world. Weimann is the artistic director of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, where Meyers is principal violinist. They also teach at UBC. The first visual artist will
be Ladner’s own Marilyn Atkey, who is well known for her insightful paintings. The church is starting the concert series with three goals in mind: • To promote the fine arts to its church community, the community of South Delta and beyond. • To support and promote local and B.C. musicians and visual artists, giving them a good venue in which to showcase their talents. • To allow the community to experience the hospitality the church family

Artists in the Village Society members will get a chance to let their work shine tomorrow at a show and sale in Ladner. SHINE will feature artwork from about 25 members of the local group. That will include paint-
ings, encaustic pieces, photography, pottery and woodwork, says Artists in the Village co-founder and vice-president Megan MacDonald. Artists like Victoria Heryet, Gary Fox, Linda Jones and photographer Sharon Wright will be some of those with work in the show, she says.
There will be “a real nice variety of different work, in different sizes as well,” she says. About half of the artists plan to be in attendance at the show, says MacDonald. “That’s one of the things we wanted to work on, is having the artists being able to connect with the
people in the community, so they can talk about their work and people can get to know and understand it better, and get a nice connection with it as well.” MacDonald and Shirley Maurice, the group’s volunteer coordinator and secretary, will both have some encaustic pieces at the show. Maurice will
also display some of her jewelry. The show and sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ladner United Church, 4960-48th Ave. There will be tea and coffee. Visit artistsinthevillage. com for more on the society, which recently marked its first anniversary.

Ladner’s Dani-Rose Coates is having fun playing a “bad guy” role in Exit 22 Productions’ rendition of Treasure Island at Capilano University. Her character, Liz Killigrew, is a female pirate who takes and does what she wants, Coates explains. “She’s one of the bad guys. She’s not a good guy at all.” It’s a role that Coates is enjoying. “I think it’s completely the opposite of my personality. It’s a lot of fun. It’s tapping into a different side of myself that I’m not usually used to exploring and I’m really enjoying it.” The production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, directed by Des Price, includes a female Jim Hawkins, a bevy of female pirates, sword fights galore, treachery and treasure, according to a press release. Environmental Assessment of the Proposed WesPac Tilbury Marine Jetty Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment WesPac Midstream—Vancouver LLC (Proponent) is proposing to construct a marine jetty for berthing and transferring liquefied natural gas (LNG) to marine barges and carriers at Tilbury Island in Delta, BC, on the Fraser River. WesPac Tilbury Marine Jetty Project (proposed Project) comprises the removal of existing abandoned marine infrastructure, the construction of a marine jetty (access trestle, loading platform, and mooring dolphins), the construction of LNG infrastructure to receive processed LNG for transfer to marine vessels and safety and process control systems. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act (2002) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (2012). BC’s Environmental Assessment process is substituted for the federal process, meeting both federal and provincial requirements for environmental assessment. Provincial and Federal ministers will each make their own decision on whether or not to approve the project. More information on Substitution is available at: http://www.eao.gov.bc.ca/substitution.html. The Proponent must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for an environmental assessment certificate by the Proponent, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve the Application Information Requirements. Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of Valued Components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. The selected Valued Components are presented in the draft Valued Components document which the Proponent has prepared and EAO invites the public to submit comments on. In order to provide information about the Valued Component selection, EAO invites the public to attend Open Houses, to be held: at:
Delta Town and Country Inn – Terrace Room 6005 Hwy 17A (at Hwy 99), Delta, BC on: Wednesday, December 2, 2015 from: 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

at:
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Riverport 10688 No. 6 Road, Richmond, BC on: Thursday, December 3, 2015 from: 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
There are 31 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the draft Valued Components document. The comment period will begin on November 20, 2015 and end on December 21, 2015. All comments received during this comment period in relation to the draft Valued Components document will be considered. The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment.
The McKee House Seniors Society will once again be hosting a bluegrass band. Rural Delivery is a contemporary bluegrass band that has been perform-
ing in the U.S. Northwest and Canada since 1978. Crowds welcome the group’s rich harmonies and energetic presence. The band consists of five talented musicians, including Terrence Enyeart on mandolin, Steve Thomas on guitar, Dale Williams on banjo, Deborah Enyeart on base and Rick Meade on resonator guitar. Well, I think I need to start at the beginning and explain the basics about protein and then build from there. Protein is found in every cell, muscle, tissue and organ in our body. The body needs protein for growth (as in muscles), maintenance and repair of our cells, metabolism (as in an increased one) and digestion. Protein also helps to
transport nutrients and oxygen within the blood, it fights against infection and, on a more aesthetic level, it is the main nutrient that keeps our hair shiny and healthy, our nails strong, our skin looking fresh and glowing, and our bones strong and healthy. (www.cdc.gov/ nutrtition.com) Protein is actually chains of other molecules called amino acids. There are 22 amino acids in total in the body. Thirteen of them non-essential, meaning our bodies are capable of making these little guys on their own, and nine that are deemed essential because we need to ingest these aminos through the foods we eat. When we eat the right foods, these nine amino acids will get reassembled to form the different types of protein that our body needs. (www.about.com/ what-is-protein). GET READY FOR WINTER DRIVING Brakes
The brakes must be faultless and equalized so there is no pulling to one side, which may cause skidding. Cooling System If it hasn’t been done in a while, hove your cooling system flushed out with a good chemical cleaner and put in fresh anti-freeze. Check containers, belts,
Don’t be caught unprepared for the first blast of winter weather.
hoses, the pressure caps and thermostat. Battery and Electrical System Cold weather is hard on batteries. If your battery is several years old, have it checked. Be sure connections are clean and light.
Engine A diagnostic check-up of the engine can be a good pre-winter investment. If you’re for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Faulty wiring, worn spark plugs, a sticking choke or emission control devices that need attention, can all lead to hard starting.
Exhaust System Check the muffler and tail pipe system for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous cold weather driving when the windows are closed. Fuel System Make sure there is plenty of gas in your tank at all times. A full tank minimizes condensation, which may cause gas line freezing. Add gasoline antifreeze occasionally.
Heaters, Defrosters and Wipers have them checked to make sure they are operational. Install winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. Ensure your windshield can give you clear vision of the road and traffic around you.
Oil and Filter Dirty oil can give you trouble in the winter, so change the oil and filter. Check the other filters, including the fuel, air and transmission filters. Tires Snow tires increase traction in soft snow. Install them on all four wheels. All-season tires on all wheels with good treads are adequate in some regions. Check your tire pressure regularly-for every 5°C of temperature drop, tire pressure goes down by one pound.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION:
QUESTION:
Are we better off Renovating or Re-Locating? That’s the Big Money question!
Are there any new books on coins coming out soon?
ANSWER:
Mike Phillips owner
For obvious reasons your realtor will make a good case to simply re-locate (ah, but not so simple!) Conversely, a good Renovator can take that existing house and make it your Dream Home! In my opinion there are 3 main factors to consider: 1. Do we enjoy living in our present location, as it is a lot of work and expense to re-locate. 2. Can we work with this existing house and bring our ideas to life here. 3. How long do we foresee ourselves in this location. All very important considerations indeed! First is going to be personal for each family and I just take into consideration the upheaval involved to re-locate. Second is where consultation with a professional Renovator can help you in the re-configuration or addition to your existing layout. Third and most important with regards to your investment in any renovation is your commitment to location. If you have a short 1-3 year plan in mind then cosmetics and immediate repairs only or you risk losing most of your investment. If you foresee a 5-10 year stay then I feel you are safe in the 50K to 150K investment into your property upgrades as you are now renovating to increase the value in your home plus adding livability and quality to your lifestyle! Beyond that time frame it’s only about wants vs. needs and the total affordability of your Dream Project! MRP Renovations is here to solve all your renovating Want’s and Need’s! Charlton Press publishes the best catalogues on Canadian coins and banknotes. The new 2016 catalogues have just arrived in stock. Starting with the 2016 Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins, this is the 70th edition of what is the best catalogue for serious collectors of Canadian coins. It lists every coin issued for circulation from 1858 until 2015 with prices for up to 10 different grades of each coin. All major and most minor varieties are included with prices. Newfoundland , Nova Scotia and P.E.I. coins are also included. Each year there is a special section at the back and this year it is on small penny varieties. The retail price of this book is $24.95
Jim Richardson, owner Western Coin and Stamp
Final catalogue is Charlton Volume Two, Collector Issues. This catalogue lists every coin issued only for collectors by the Royal Canadian Mint. With 180 different coins issued in 2013, 250 different in 2014 and 350 different in 2015 this catalogue is a necessity just to keep up with the mint. My favorite use for the catalogue is to check the actual mintage of the coins . This catalogue sells for $34.95. All catalogues are PST exempt but we do need to charge GST>

QUESTION: Why is an appraisal necessary? ANSWER: Your lender wants to ensure that your purchase price is in line with the property’s fair market value. Lenders want to see that you are purchasing a quality property and that the purchase price is in line with market values.

The 2016 Charlton Paper Money Catalogue has every note issued by the Canadian government since 1858. As well it includes all Provincial and Municipal issues of currency. Did you know that Alberta issued a $1.00 bill in 1936 or that North Vancouver issued $1, 5, & 10 bills in 1913. These as well as many other scarce notes are listed and priced in this catalogue. Regarding pricing ,I have noticed that most banknotes from 1937 and older increased by about 10% and the 1954 notes increased by 5%. This catalogue sells for $34.95.

The effectiveness of a whitening product is dependent on the active ingredient in the product, the strength of this active ingredient and the time it is in contact with the teeth. The whitening strips and other drug store products have limitations as they are restricted as to the active ingredient and the strength of this active ingredient. The most effective whitening products can only be dispensed by a dental professional. The drug store products are also limited as they are in the form of strips that are not closely adapted to the teeth as opposed to the custom trays you get from the professional products. The professional products also have ingredients to decrease sensitivity which can be a side effect of the active ingredient in whitening products. The first consultation appointment involves a medical and dental questionnaire. Like all medical and dental offices we require information to form a picture of who we are consulting. Medical and dental history allows us to properly assess your oral conditions in order to propose a viable treatment plan best suited for your specific needs. The next step is a complete intra oral (inside your mouth) and extra oral (head and neck) exam. At this point we are looking for lumps and bumps that do not belong. If any anomalies are found you are referred to the appropriate practitioner best suited to address your needs. In the intra oral exam the teeth are checked for caries (cavities) and mobility. If you are having a partial made we will refer you back to your dentist for any necessary work or xrays that may need to be completed before we fabricate your partial. This is important, as you are making a large investment into your teeth and the foundations must be assured. At the end of your consultation you are given a treatment plan (quote) for services. If you have insurance, we will preauthorize your prosthetic with your insurance company. Once we receive your preauthorization back from your insurance company we will contact you with the amount your insurance is paying. You are not obligated to go ahead, but you will know what your financial obligation will be in case you decide to have the work done. If you have any questions regarding this or any other implant or dental related subject please do not hesitate to call or make an appointment for a free consultation.

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION:
QUESTION
Mom is home from hospital and a veteran with approved funding. Can HoneyDo bill Veterans Affairs directly for their services?
I keep hearing about ‘new hearing aid technology’, but how much can hearing aids have actually changed?
ANSWER:
ANSWER
Great news your mom is eligible for funding from Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC)! It is challenging for some seniors to afford all the support they need so such funding can be life-changing, allowing for greater comfort and independence at home.
Like many other high-tech devices, hearing aids have experienced a major technological revolution in the past decade, and specifically in the last several years. The best of today’s hearing aids can do the following: • Have settings adjusted by the latest iPhone® or Android devices • Make listening in noisy environments easier and more comfortable with adaptive directional microphones
Mark Nickel BC-HIP, BBA Hearing Instrument Practitioner
• Virtually eliminate feedback • Stream stereo sound from TVs and other media players directly to the hearing aids themselves
Phone: 604-943-0033 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen www.TsawwassenHearing.com
• Be used as hands-free Bluetooth devices These features are contained within hearing aids that are smaller (even invisible, in some cases) and more comfortable and powerful than those that have been available before.

Q: I’ve Been Served!
QUESTION:
What is the first thing that comes to mind when you see Expedia CrusieShipCenters?
A: Most of us have seen a television show or movie where a character is surprised by
Cam Mitchner Lawyer
someone handing them an envelope or set of papers accompanied by an emphatic“You’ve been served!” Sometimes a character goes to great efforts to avoid the critical moment in hopes of avoiding the law suit altogether.Drama ensues. The reality is, or should be, less dramatic. Legal service is often accomplished by having a friend or representative of the plaintiff contact the defendants and arrange for a time and place to deliver the documents. However, few things are more anxiety-inducing than the realization you are being sued, and the temptation for some people is to create their own movie script and avoid all contact with anyone who might possibly be bearing the legal documents. Agents for my clients over the years have encountered people brandishing weapons, people living in dark houses behind closed curtains and people who refuse to acknowledge their own identity in desperate efforts to avoid being served.Unfortunately for these people, the plaintiff can apply to the court to approve an alternate form of service, such as posting ads in newspaper and online classifieds, and the plaintiff can then continue on without the defendant’s participation in the law suit. The best approach is to cooperate and accept service of the documents. Resisting service merely increases animosity between the parties and makes you look dishonest. But don’t stop there! Read the documents immediately so you know the case against you, how to respond, and when your response is due,so that you will be able to properly defend yourself against the claim.

If vacant the appraiser determines if the land should be developed and if so what improvement should be built. If left vacant, when would future development be financially feasible? • Should the existing improvements on the property be maintained in their current state, should they be altered in some manner to make them more valuable, or should they be demolished to create a vacant site for a different use? • If renovation or redevelopment is warranted, when should the new improvements be built? Daniel M. Jones To determine highest and best use, the appraiser must analyze data, CRP, AACI, P.App., not just compile it. As an analogy, in applying the direct comparison FRI, CMR, RI approach the appraiser does not just compile a list of comparable sales Business Coordinator/ from the market data; he or she analyzes the relevant sales. It is critical President that a careful highest and best use analysis precede the application of the approaches to value. Otherwise, there is a high likelihood that serious errors will be made in the valuation process. www.Depreciationreport.com

Pacers a model of consistency Boys volleyball team heading to Valleys looking for 14th provincial berth in 16 years MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It seems like the same old story each season for the Delta Pacers senior boys volleyball team and that’s a good thing. The Pacers have reached the provincial AAA championships 13 of the last 15 years and the Ladner school’s success goes back even further when Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Barb Salt took on the program in 1992. She eventually passed on the reins to Shell Thompson who continued the momentum. Today, the school’s co-athletic director has taken on a different role — serving more as an administrator and leaving the coaching to recent university graduates. University of Toronto alumni Jay Termonti is back for his second season and has been joined by former Manitoba Bison Carson Kaurenhowen. The 2015 edition of the Pacers have been hovering among the provincially ranked teams all season, listed as an honourable mention in the latest poll. They are a solid bet to earn one of six B.C. berths up for grabs at next week’s Fraser Valley Championships and advance to the Langley Events Centre, early next month. “In terms of our continued success, you have to give a shout out to Shell who has been building the program for a long time,” said Termonti. “He works hard to get kids to play at Grade 8, Junior, the club level and just to enjoy the sport.” The Pacers have reached the provincial podium once, earning bronze, but have never played for a B.C. championship. The quarterfinal round has typically been their make it or break it point. Last year, they reached the final eight before falling in straight sets to eventual

Delta’s Jason Fung blasts through a pair of Seaquam blockers during Monday’s home court win. silver medalist Kelowna. This time, a potential medal path appears to be less treacherous with the province’s most dominant teams at the AA tier for smaller schools. “It’s definitely a little more wide open this year,” agreed Termonti. “I think our guys understand that too. We have taken the position that anyone can win the provincials this year. Obviously, we have a lot of work to do at Fraser Valleys, but if we get to provincials we are definitely gunning for a top finish.”
The Pacers concluded Fraser Valley South League play Monday with a straight set home win over Seaquam to finish with a 7-2 record. The highlight of the regular season came a week earlier in a five set win over defending B.C. champion and previously unbeaten Earl Marriott. “It was quite the game and definitely gave us a chance to see what the guys are made of,” added Termonti. “When the going gets tough, we want to see them man up and play our strong Ladner ball. It was ice to see against a
team like Earl Marriott. “We have some passionate guys and a group that has played a lot together. We are definitely one of those teams that is not about individual parts but the sum of parts that makes us better. If we can keep developing the team game and fire on all cylinders, I think we can be really dangerous.” Delta has been seeded third for the Valley Championships which means a bye directly to Monday night’s quarter-final and a probable match-up with No. 6 Surrey Christian.
Sun Devil grad helps UBC win 5th straight national title Tsawwassen’s Cailean Meredith had a leading role in the UBC Thunderbirds capturing their fifth straight CIS national field hockey championship. The former South Delta Sun Devil stand-
out helped set up the equalizer in the dying seconds of regulation time then scored in the shootout as UBC pulled off a stunning 3-2 win over the University of Victoria oin the final. UBC had opened the championships with
a loss to Guelph but battled its way into the final with a 2-1 win over Victoria and playing Toronto to a 2-2 draw. Meredith was named UBC’s Player of the Game in the first encounter against the Vikes.

Sungod Physio teams up with Tsawwassen Springs MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a homecoming of sorts for Travis Wolsey and an opportunity to provide yet another service in the growing Tsawwassen Springs development. The South Delta Secondary School graduate and former UBC Thunderbirds football standout put his Human Kinetics and Physical Therapy degrees, along with various diplomas, to work when he launched his Sungod Sports Orthopaedic and Physiotherapy Clinics. Wolsey and his team not only established locations at Sungod Arena and the Ladner Leisure Centre but also a list of impressive clients that includes NHL stars Milan Lucic and Brendan Gallagher, along with Seattle Mariners’ pitcher James Paxton. He also has a working relationship with the Vancouver Giants and it was co-owner Ron Toigo who approached Wolsey about opening a third clinic at his Tsawwassen Springs golf resort community. “I’ve been taking care of the Giants for over a decade and Ron mentioned to me a few years ago about putting this together. He thought it was a good idea to have a physio place there and it

opened last week, is also an ideal fit for the golfing experience that is near completion at Tsawwassen Springs. A covered driving range with a separate teaching area is now in operation. The impressive clubhouse across the street includes a pro shop, gym, Pat Quinn’s Restaurant and Bar and a studio that is the new home of the

Tsawwassen Wellness Centre — Pilates and Health. Head professional Chris Hood says Wolsey’s services and expertise reflects the needs of today’s golfer — at the competitive and recreational levels. “Travis is Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) certified. It’s basically fitness performance and how it all ties into golf,”
explained Hood. “I went through TPI and it took about 90 minutes to do all my (body) measurements. A guy who had never seen my swing or even me pick up a golf club before nailed the problems of my swing. It’s based on improving your stretching and range of motion and that’s where Travis fits in. “The clinic is also great for someone needing rehab work or coming off surgery that may need some help to get going again or modify his swing. “No where else are you going to find a one stop shop like this. Lots of places have teaching but you are sending them off to another place for physio or a gym workout. And with Pat Quinn’s (opening soon) there is the social side of golf that is taken care of too.” Wolsey added his business is as much about body maintenance these days as it is is rehabilitation. “It has just exploded and what I see a lot of is injury prevention,” he said. “There was an epidemic of ACL tears with young athletes but now we can do a lot to prevent those things. That’s why you see so much strength and conditioning today. Physio and sports medicine plays a big role in that.”

ROWLANDS, Helen October 10, 2015 The tears in our eyes we can wipe away, the ache in our heart will always stay. Death leaves a heart ache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. We think of you yesterday, today and tomorrow. We think of you out loud and in silence, with more love than you will ever know. As the days pass, our love for you becomes a memory, but that memory becomes a treasure. This treasure will be with us for ever. Love you. Miss you, Ann, Linda, Martin, Kerry and Serena.
