Kids filling stockings for other kids PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE
Youngsters from Kidzone Daycare drop off toys Wednesday morning for the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall’s Stocking For Kids program. All 300 stockings in the mall’s annual program were adopted earlier this month and must be filled and returned by the end of day Monday. Now in its 19th year, Stockings For Kids, which is sponsored by mall merchants, Century Group and the Optimist, collects gifts to be distributed through Deltassist’s Toy Depot. New, unwrapped toys can also be dropped off at Deltassist’s Ladner office at 4891 Delta St. Families wishing to register for Toy Depot assistance can call Deltassist at 604-594-3455 or 604-946-9526.
Delta’s future fueled by LNG With Tilbury plant expanding, a marine export facility planned and a proposal at TFN, Delta becoming hub SANDOR GYARMATI

Liquefied natural gas has been part of Delta’s scene for many years, but it’s going to be an even bigger part of its future. That was the underlying message at a packed Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday where LNG expansion was the topic. A who’s who of Delta business and political leaders, as well as representatives from the
Tsawwassen First Nation and a few local activists, were at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn to hear from FortisBC president and CEO Michael Mulcahy, prime contractor Bechtel Canada’s Michael Hurley, WesPac Midstream vice-president of engineering Art Diefenbach and Delta Mayor Lois Jackson. They talked about the major expansion underway at the FortisBC Tilbury facility as well as the proposal by WesPac to build an adjacent marine jetty
for LNG shipping. A separate proposal by the TFN to enter into a partnership with FortisBC to build an LNG export facility on Tsawwassen lands was also mentioned but not talked about in much length, as it was noted TFN members still have to vote on the plan. EXPANSION: see Page 3 PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

Delta council narrowly approved a controversial development application for the old La Belle Auberge restaurant site in Ladner Village following a public hearing Tuesday. In a 4-3 vote, council members supported a plan that would see the historic Roycroft Grant Residence retained and four new homes built on the 48th Avenue property. The proposal, which failed to receive endorsements earlier this year from the heritage and planning committees, had been sent back by council a couple of months ago so the owner could make further tweaks before it was considered.

The historic Roycroft Grant Residence, once home of La Belle Auberge restaurant, will become a single-family home again under a plan approved by civic politicians this week. The size of the new homes compared to the current house had drawn concern and neighbours also complained about the
density of the project. “This residence is a significant heritage building which will be dwarfed by the new homes around it,”
said Coun. Sylvia Bishop, who voted against the proposal. “We are losing the charm and character of the Ladner Village. We
are kidding ourselves if we think this is going to be affordable housing.” Coun. Ian Paton said the owner is willing to invest a lot of money to accommodate the heritage house and preserve it. He added if developers continue to find it too difficult to build here because a property has a heritage home, they will say it’s not worth it. Built in 1904, the twostorey Edwardian-era home will go through several alterations and upgrades before resale as a single-family home. Jeannie Kanakos and Mayor Lois Jackson joined Bishop in voting against the application, while Paton, Robert Campbell, Bruce McDonald and Heather King voted in favour.

CONTINUED from Page 1 Saying LNG is nothing new, especially in Delta, Mulcahy went over the economic benefits of the $400-million Tilbury expansion for Delta and the Lower Mainland, a message similar to one he delivered at a media event at the plant last week. He also noted there has been 44 years of safe operations at Tilbury. Diefenbach talked about his company’s marine jetty proposal, saying the facility would receive its supply from the Fortis Tilbury plant and would have just three larger ships arriving per month to start. It would eventually
see a maximum of one ship every three days, not including smaller barges. Diefenbach noted it’s a less than seven per cent increase in ship movements on the Fraser River. He also talked at length about the safety measures that would be implemented and all the federal and provincial requirements. “The LNG carriers have had an exceptional safety record. There’s never been a major accident or security problem in over 50 years of shipping, 135,000 LNG voyages and 130 million miles travelled. The ships that carry LNG are specially built… they are purpose-built especially
for this and have specially trained crews,” he said. Diefenbach noted the industrial site is the former home of a woodchip operation and that once restoration is complete, they will “leave the area a lot better than it is today.” Already having an export license from the National Energy Board, WesPac is hoping to begin construction next fall. Talking about how the Tilbury area has grown into a modern industrial park, and that the Tilbury LNG facility has been there for many years, Jackson gave an enthusiastic speech about the benefits when it comes to jobs.

She also talked about how such a facility wouldn’t have even been possible without industrial land becoming available. As far as the Wespac proposal, she noted that it will face a rigorous approval process and, even if it passes all those steps, a rezoning proposal must still go through a Delta public hearing. Following the presentations, there was enough time for a few questions. Asked what measures can be implemented given WesPac’s facility would be across the river from a proposed jet fuel storage facility in Richmond, Diefenbach said all those
factors will be taken into account in the environmental assessment. Regarding the George Massey Tunnel, he said it makes no difference whether the tunnel is replaced by a bridge. Asked about the need for such projects when there’s a global LNG glut, Mulcahy said there’s no concern because they are concentrating on “medium to small markets.” As far as the need to use farmland as right-of-ways to bring more electric power, he said a number of alternatives will be explored and stakeholders engaged if further expansion occurs at the plant.

Delta had looked at leaving the Fraser Valley Regional Library earlier this year as a result of rising costs.
Delta decides to stay in regional library system Council satisfied budgeting issues addressed SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta is staying as a member of the Fraser Valley Regional Library. Civic politicians have voted in favour of a staff recommendation to approve the regional library system’s proposed 2016 budget, which has Delta paying an increase of just over three per cent, pushing the municipality’s contribution to almost $3.5 million. Earlier this year, Delta council members expressed dismay at the budget, pointing out Delta’s portion has gone up by more than 14 per cent in the last five years — a more than $500,000 increase.
They also expressed concerns that it appeared money was going into a communal fund that’s used to fund libraries throughout the region and wasn’t all necessarily being used for Delta’s branches. Council subsequently passed a motion to direct staff to look into opting out of the FVRL. Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, previously told the Optimist civic staff has been talking with regional library staff about Delta’s concerns. McGill told council the library has made a number of positive steps. Delta finance director Karl Preuss said the new
management of the FVRL has adopted budgeting systems that are more in line with the way Delta does business, such as putting money aside every year for capital items. A report to council notes staff is satisfied the development of the budget demonstrates a good balance between fiscal restraint and the need to address longer term needs. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, Delta’s representative on the FVRL board, also said the financial management of the system is improved. She noted Delta staff has started to work on a five-year plan for Delta libraries in conjunction with the FVRL. A draft report will be brought to council next spring.

couple of outstanding gentlemen were recognized last Friday night at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s annual Hats Off to Excellence awards gala when Rev. Jim Short and Jim Stimson shared Citizen of the Year honours. The two men are pillars of this community and are both most deserving of the award. Short’s work in the faith and armed forces communities is legendary while Stimson’s decades-long efforts to help people beat addictions is aweinspiring. I was happy to see both receive recognition for all they do here in Delta and beyond, but I couldn’t help but feel for the third finalist in the category. It’s one thing not to win an award, but it’s another to be the only one who doesn’t. That’s certainly not intended to be a knock on the chamber, which should be commended for all the work it does on an annual basis to recognize outstanding individuals and businesses and for hosting a gala to put them in the spotlight. It’s an often thankless task and Ian Tait and his crew do a wonderful job year after year. All I’m endeavouring to do is shine a bit of light on the third member of what is an exceptional trio, a fine gentleman by the name of Douglas George Massey. If the name sounds familiar, it should. Doug’s father, the late George Massey, was the driving force behind the tunnel that bears his name and the son has carried on a family tradition of community service. He spent a decade on Delta council back in the 1960s and ’70s, but his efforts to make this community a better place go well beyond that role. If there’s a cause to be championed, whether it’s preserving Delta’s fishing heritage, protecting the environment or fighting for the hospital, you can bet Massey is at the forefront. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who devotes as much time and cares as much about this community as Doug Massey, who is still going strong at 82. *** I’d like to offer a sincere apology to members of the Ladner Legion for language used in a letter to the editor that ran last Friday. The hard-working volunteers of the Legion do much good in the community and should not have been subjected to such disparaging remarks.
Summits on climate change not making much headway
T
he “king tides” are upon us for this month. Luckily, there are no weather systems with sufficient wind to move a 15-foot tide over the various barriers and into our beach communities. We will see what happens in the coming winter. As widely reported, this year will see a very active El Nino, which could produce higher than normal storm activity generated from the Pacific Ocean. There are lots of people out there who believe that increased storm activity — typhoons and hurricanes — are the result of manmade global warming. Although there is no evidence that suggests this correlation is real, the perceived relationship is enough to fuel political agendas that are ongoing and that have, over the years, culminated in various climate change summits. The Kyoto Accord may have been a good idea but it, the disastrous Copenhagen United Nations Climate Change Conference of six years ago and all of the other attempts to rally countries to save the world have not come close to making headway. The problem is that developing countries want to focus on developing and not on spending billions of dollars to curb emissions when they need to spend billions on providing food, electricity and water for hundreds of millions of impoverished citizens. In 2007, Al Gore, Nobel Peace
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
Prize winner, former U.S. vice president, author, soothsayer and hypocrite extraordinaire, announced the “North Polar Ice Cap is falling off a cliff.” He went on to say that “it could be completely gone in as little as seven years”. This is when you would see pictures of polar bears balancing on pieces of stray ice all over the place. Well, 2014 has come and gone and now the Northern Polar Ice Cap is larger than it has been in 35 years and it is only getting bigger and thicker. So, with all the failures and all of the good and bad will gained and lost in these seemingly pointless summits, what can we expect from the Paris United Nations Climate Change Conference that begins Monday? All the urgency and “tipping point” banter aside, I am guessing there will again be no binding commitment to any worldwide agreement.
U.S. President Barack Obama will attempt to rein in China and India but I suspect neither of these countries will ever be told what to do. Instead, vague promises to convoluted emissions compensation equations will be the order of the day and it will be business as usual. Global warming is an enigma. Last year a Gallop poll in the United States showed there are three main groups that have an opinion on global warming and its causes. There are the “concerned believers” at 39 per cent, the “mixed middle” at 36 per cent and the “cool skeptics” that account for one in four citizens. This last group is the fastest growing at the expense of the mixed middle and do not believe in man-made global warming. Bjorn Lomborg from the Copenhagen Consensus Centre recently published a report in the journal Global Policy that proclaims, “Even if every government on the planet not only keeps every Paris promise, reduces all emissions by 2030, and shifts no emissions to other countries, but also keeps these emission reductions throughout the rest of the century, temperatures will be reduced by just 0.17°C (0.3°F) by the year 2100.” Hardly impressive or meaningful. The money can go elsewhere. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food.

Letters Art brings community together Editor: Over the past year I’ve had the opportunity to participate in a number of vibrant and inspiring art events in Ladner. These events have included photography exhibitions at Stir Coffee House, the Shine Art Show and Sale (held last weekend at the Ladner United Church) and the Grand Prix of Art — Delta (held this past summer on the streets of Ladner Village). The last two events were both hosted by the recently formed Artists in the Village Society. While it is exhilarating and extremely gratifying to be involved in events
such as these, my greatest takeaway is seeing the mutual benefit both the artists and the spectators derive from participating in these events. Not only are artists getting a chance to get their art out into the community, but residents are getting a chance to interact with artists and celebrate art in all its forms. There is definitely a strong passion for arts and culture in the community. Events such as these are a wonderful complement to the terrific sporting and cultural events that are already hosted in Ladner. They contribute to the village’s vibrancy and help
foster a greater sense of community. I can’t count the number of people who have raved to me about how much they look forward to and enjoy these events. A big thank-you to all the local businesses, organizations, individuals in the community and the municipality who contribute venue space, financial (or in kind) support or just countless volunteer hours to make these events happen. Without you these events wouldn’t be possible. Thank-you! You help make Ladner the charming and delightful little community it is. Adrienne Parsons
LNG plant comes with too much risk
Editor: Re: LNG plant for TFN lands, Nov. 18 I was pleased to see the TFN is committed to ensuring “best practices are used in every aspect of a proposed liquefied natural gas export facility” at Roberts Bank. It is difficult to perceive that “best practices” would even consider, much less vote on, the erection of an LNG facility next to a subdivision or shopping mall. Many of us use natural
gas in our homes to heat water, barbecue, heat our house or to enjoy in a gas fireplace. It is readily combustible under a wide range of conditions. We treat it with caution and respect because we have read that at times it can behave explosively when it accumulates in in a confined space or when there is a massive leak, like in a pipeline. The threat against tankers carrying crude oil through B.C. waters is not
that there are not good precautions, but that even with these precautions, at some time a leak or rupture will occur. Why is LNG different? Wherever the facility is located, there is always a risk that something unforeseen will occur. I would expect that best practices would locate such a facility where such an occurrence would have a minimal impact on people. Bill Sharkey
Neighbour’s driveway not place for garbage Editor: Every week for the past month, sometime between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, someone has been leaving household garbage on the driveway to the entrance of our family business on 41B Street. Unfortunately by the time I get to it in the morn-
ing it has been run over by several employee vehicles and semi-trucks, spreading it all over the driveway and 41B Street. And to make things worse, thanks to our winter winds, your trash has also been blown all over, not only making our property messy but also that of our neighbours.
I see that you eat a lot of dairy. I understand this makes garbage stinky, but missing trash day is not an excuse to throw your waste on someone else’s property. Please, be a good neighbour and don’t use your neighbours as your trash disposal. E. Schlacht

Overt presence necessary
4877 Delta st. 604-946-3997
Editor: Re: Ceremony security detail over the top, letter to the editor, Nov. 20 On behalf of the men and women of the Delta Police Department, and those volunteers who attended to assist with the Remembrance Day ceremony in Ladner, I would like to respond to the letter by G. Campbell. The event at the Ladner cenotaph usually hosts several thousand spectators, with preparations
for up to 7,500 people. At this year’s ceremony, there were four Delta police officers present, whose role was to ensure a safe environment for our Canadian Armed Forces and personnel, police officers, dignitaries, Canadian war veterans, first responders and all other members of the public. In addition to the officers, there were volunteers and regular patrol officers present to assist. While I recognize that seeing uniformed police officers armed at a Ladner Remembrance Day ceremony can be disconcerting, the decision to provide an overt style of policing was based on national and provincial threat assessments. The response by the Delta Police Department was similar to the response by other police departments across B.C. Part of this enhanced officer presence is to deter any potential disruptions and also draw any such individuals’ focus away from the crowds and towards police. The assertion these officers came “storming” through crowds and families with “their fingers on their triggers ready to fire” is not correct. Our officers take pride in being a part of our community and I saw these officers interacting with families and children, even having their photos taken with some. The reality is whenever one sees a police officer, chances are they are armed; sometimes their deployment may simply be less obvious. While Campbell may not consider Ladner a “hotbed of terrorist activity,” only two years ago a Ladner motel was used as a place to practice bomb making by a couple that was found guilty of terrorism charges. Just over one year ago, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was gunned down by a radical while guarding the National
War Memorial prior to Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa, and only two days after this year’s Remembrance Day, hundreds of innocent people enjoying a quiet dinner or concert were murdered or injured in Paris by terrorists. As well as marching as a part of the Ladner Remembrance Day ceremony, I have also since looked through many photos of it. Nowhere did I see “degenerates” or “unkempt louts.” Instead, I saw the faces of hundreds of veterans, police officers, firemen and members of the military, to name a few, joined by community members of all ages enjoying a beautiful and solemn ceremony to honour our fallen veterans. I saw a great many community volunteers working to make the day safe for others to enjoy — part of this involves ensuring spectators remain behind barricades. I saw cadets proudly guarding the cenotaph. I saw Delta police reserve constables standing alongside members of the Ladner Legion, chatting with attendees and assisting in the security of the event. We are truly blessed to live in a country of peace, and while it is unfortunate that a uniformed police presence is required in these circumstances, it is the duty of Delta police to be prepared for threats. Should any member of the community ever have questions, comments or concerns about the activities of the Delta Police Department, I can personally be reached by phone at 604-940-5000 or officechiefconstable@deltapolice.ca. Alternatively Delta police public information officer A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow can be reached at 604-940-5016 or media@ deltapolice.ca. Neil Dubord Chief Constable Delta Police Department

Cyclists well aware of vehicles what is behind and in front of them. We are riding alongside 3,000 pounds of steel and glass travelling often faster than posted speed limits. Cyclists don’t own the road any more or any less than motor vehicles do. Even pedestrians have a legal right to the road. Cyclists, pedestrians, motorcycles, trucks and, yes, even cars have legal right to the roads in Canada. As for cyclists on the sidewalks in Ladner and Tsawwassen, the reason many do so is primarily because of the unsafe practices of drivers and the poor dedicated cycling infrastructure in these two communities.
Editor: Re: Cyclists create all kinds of problems for drivers, letter to the editor, Nov. 18 Ernie Tobin expressed a number of issues he has with cyclists in the Delta region to which I, as a driver and a cyclist (most cyclists are drivers), would like to respond. Riders ride two abreast because it is safer. This practice requires drivers to pass only when it is safe to do so, using the oncoming lane, as if they were passing another car. Otherwise, the driver may try to squeeze (unsafely) by the riders riding in a single row. Tobin can be assured cyclists are hyper aware of
This pushes inexperienced cyclists to believe the sidewalk is the safe alternative. Sadly, this is actually a very unsafe practice for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers alike. I drive and cycle in Ladner. I think it is a great place to ride a bike (or in my case a three-wheeled Dutch-style cargo bike). I feel very safe using Ladner’s roads. I do wish that Ladner’s bike users would stay off the sidewalk. I believe we (drivers and cyclists) can get along with the development of more bike lanes (separated lanes are safest) and a mutual understanding that we both have a legal right to the roads. Need to know list is a rather short one
Editor: I think I can offer some insight on why our local MLA and Optimist columnist found it impossible to access factual details behind the multi-billion dollar infrastructure project known as the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. The present Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure functions on a need to know basis and it is a short list. Last spring I made an email inquiry to Richmond’s mayor to see if he thought a decommissioned (but not
destroyed) George Massey Tunnel would make a great foot and cyclist passageway to connect the park lands of Delta and Richmond. He wrote back with a referral to his engineering personnel to find out what they think about this idea. They contacted me and said it would be “too costly to maintain the tunnel and a new bridge” and referred me to their engineering counterparts in the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. I did receive a reply from them as well and they told me that “a new

bridge was preferred over a new tunnel” and that cyclists and pedestrians, who were part of the public input, had preferred to cross the river over a new bridge rather than through a new tunnel. The “old” tunnel would be decommissioned (destroyed). Hmm... I wrote back to ask if the real reason the tunnel was being destroyed was because of an investment deal to increase commercial shipping that involved dredging this part of the river. No answer came back. Brian Britten

One Ladner business is hosting a holiday celebration for a cause. Alongside You, which offers health and wellness services, is hosting a Christmas party at its Ladner Village office. In addition to celebrating the season, the gathering is also a fundraiser for Reach Child and Youth Development Society. The money raised will go specifically to the Group Respite Program, which is designed to give parents of children and youth with special needs a muchneeded break. The group format of the program, which runs twice a month, also gives children and youth the chance to build friendships, strengthen social skills and
become more aware of their community. The province funds many of the costs of the program, however parents may be expected to contribute financially as well, which can be difficult for families already spending significant sums of money to support a child with special needs. The party, which is set for Sunday, Dec. 13 from 2 to 5 p.m., will feature games and crafts, a letterwriting station, holiday music and treats, as well as a silent auction, with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Reach. Alongside You will also be selling gift cards, with 10 per cent of proceeds going to Reach. Alongside You is located at 203–4840 Delta St.

With the winter storm season upon us, B.C.’s minister of state for emergency preparedness was in Delta last week to remind residents about the importance of being ready in the event of an emergency or natural disaster. “In the event of a catastrophe, the first people that you’re going to have to rely on is yourself and your neighbours,” said Naomi Yamamoto. Yamamoto, who was appointed to the position in July as the government put a high priority on emergency preparedness, joined Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton last Friday for a tour of Tilburybased First Aid & Survival
Technologies Limited (F.A.S.T.). The company, which has been in business for close to 30 years, produces emergency disaster kits and emergency management response products. F.A.S.T. produces both personal pre-made kits, which are customizable, as well as gear kits for search and rescue teams and emergency response products for large organizations such as B.C. Hydro, the Canadian Red Cross, WorkSafeBC, the Department of National Defense and the Corporation of Delta. The company makes home and school emergency kits, specialty first aid and emergency kits for cars, and emergency food and water rations.
One package of vacuum-sealed food rations is enough nutrition for one person to survive on for three days explained general manager Carmen Ewles. Each bar has the exact percentage of fat, protein and carbohydrates for survival, she said. F.A.S.T. started in 1988 with Dee Miller and Janice Turnbull assembling custom first-aid kits on a ping-pong table in Turnbull’s basement. The company soon outgrew the basement and moved into a larger manufacturing space. In the early 1990s, after an earthquake in Northern California, the company started to manufacture and assemble emergency preparedness kits for the B.C. market.

Delta readies to handle winter’s wrath
Engineering department has plan in place for roads to deal with the inevitable snow and ice JESSICA KERR
j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta is ready for winter weather. “We are fully stocked and ready to go,” Hugh Fraser, deputy director of engineering, told civic politicians this week. “We just never know how much snow and ice we’ll have,” Fraser said, adding staff members are continually monitoring weather and road conditions throughout the winter. In the event of snow or ice, the municipality clears roads based on a priority system. First priority roads include public transit routes, major collectors, select school access roadways and some hilly areas. On these routes, snow and ice removal is carried out as long as needed and overtime staff is automatically used as needed. Second priority routes includes secondary roads through residential areas and school bus routes. Overtime may be scheduled to complete these routes, however, it isn’t automatic. Third prior-

Clearing in these areas is site specific, usually at the request of residents, and only done during regular working hours. In case of an emergency, first responders can request site specific snow removal to help police, fire
and ambulance respond to an emergency. Sanding trucks will divert from regular duties to help in an emergency. Highways are maintained by Mainroad, Fraser said, and the ferry causeway is cleared by B.C. Ferries. Delta’s equipment reserve includes several
snow plows and sanders, two brine trucks, which spray a salt-water solution on roads to prevent ice from forming, and other machines that can be used in snow removal. A night shift driver will be in place seven days a week from December until March. When the driver is not sanding, plowing
or brining, he will carry out routine inspections on major roads and overpasses, in addition to other duties. Delta has established a winter road conditions phone line (604-952-3820). The voice message will be updated every four hours with the current weather conditions and the munic-
Education efforts aimed at keeping pedestrians safe
The Delta Police Department, local volunteers and ICBC teamed up this week in an effort to keep pedestrians safe. With the fall and winter months upon us, the change in seasons brings holiday displays, worsening weather, darker evenings and a spike in pedestrian-involved crashes. In an effort to keep those crashes to a minimum, Delta police officers, ICBC and Community Police Station volunteers were out at several locations this week educating pedestrians and promoting pedestrian safety and visibility. They are providing pedestrians with reflectors, as well as tips and tricks to help them stay safe:
• Make eye contact with drivers as it’s hard to see pedestrians when visibility is poor in fall and winter. Never assume that a driver has seen you. • Focus your full attention on the road and traffic around you as drivers may not stop or obey traffic signals. • Remove your headphones and leave your phone alone while crossing the road. • Wear bright and reflective clothing or gear to make it easier for drivers to see you, especially in wet weather at night. • Before you start to cross, look left and right for oncoming vehicles and make sure vehicles in all lanes are fully stopped. • Be careful at intersections. “Terrorism” is a telling descriptor. It doesn’t describe the crime, but the intended consequence. Most crimes describe the action — murder, theft, rape, assault. But the atrocities unleashed on our world today, although they include all of those, are primarily designed to destabilize, create chaos and make us afraid. In other words, terrorize us. Judging by the reaction to the attacks in Paris, it has worked to some degree. We’re afraid it could happen here. We’re afraid terrorists will infiltrate our communities disguised as refugees. Our corner of the world seems less safe, more vulnerable. Without minimizing

Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:4–5, NIV) Whether we die from a bomb blast (highly unlikely) or an accident or heart attack (much more likely), we are all going to die. Being ready is the key, and Jesus came to enable us to be ready. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. HUB at work to improve local cycling conditions

Building network is high on committee’s list SANDRA JONES, PATRICK THOMPSON AND NEIL POPE
Optimist contributors
It was great to read Ted Murphy’s column along with other recent stories about greenways and bike safety in Delta. Safe and connected cycling is what Delta HUB is all about. But what is Delta HUB? We’re a volunteer cycling committee that began locally in late 2014. In only one year, a lot of progress has been made. HUB refers to HUB Cycling (formerly Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition), and its 10 local committees throughout the Lower Mainland. Led by Patrick Thompson, Delta HUB conducts regular member meetings and liaises with Delta’s engineering department, civic councillors, MLAs, B.C. Ferries, TFN and many others. HUB members have a wide variety of backgrounds that represent our community, including commuters, students, seniors and those using adaptive cycling. Through our safety focus, we aim to bring to Delta the best cycling practices that other municipalities — such as Richmond — have already achieved. This includes improving bike route wayfinding, initiating the use of green paint to raise awareness of cyclists and expanding bike lanes whenever Delta does a new road development. HUB also advocates for more frequent debris cleaning, fixing the proverbial potholes and better cyclist detection at traffic lights.

Delta HUB members (from left) Sandra Jones, Patrick Thompson and Neil Pope are working to improve conditions for local cyclists. Building out a complete local network is high on our radar, whether through new greenways or an expansion of existing routes. This means connecting the places that people want to go — like shopping, schools, parks and workplaces. Regarding the new mall at TFN, for instance, we recently met with the developer to learn about cycling facilities (which will be good) and access (which may be compromised). Knowing 52nd Street is a designated bike route — and knowing the province is not supporting an overpass across the widened Highway 17 — Delta HUB is proposing a series of enhancements to minimize conflicts along this busy travel corridor. We’re hearing the community’s concerns and want to make it better — for cyclists, youth and the elderly. We’re also working on regional connections. One exciting project called “Ungap the Map” involves other HUB committees, TransLink and the province to create a complete
cycling network built upon existing trails. We actively support TFN plans for the Great Blue Heron Way, and are in contact with the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project team to ensure a high-quality cycling/pedestrian lane is built with thoughtful connections to Ladner and Tilbury. HUB also has a strong education focus, and is developing initiatives to bring cycling safety instruction to our local schools and workshops to our libraries. Overall, while we still have a lot of good work ahead of us, we are pleased by the relationships we’re building with Delta and other key partners. It takes patience and collaboration, and we look forward to working to make Delta a great place to cycle. It takes people too. Our next HUB meeting is Thursday, Dec. 3, 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Ladner United Church. All are welcome. Sandra Jones, Patrick Thompson and Neil Pope are members of Delta HUB.

The Best Choice is YOUR Choice There are many options available to you to help take care of your home or help with your day-to-day healthcare needs. You can have services brought to you where you currently live or you can move to where service is provided in-house. “None of these options is ‘best’ for everyone, what satisfies the needs and wants of one person may, or may not be what will best satisfy the needs and wants of another person. ” says Teena Love, General Manager of Amenida Seniors’ Community. Start by making a list of what you need and what you want for help and then prioritize the
list. Don’t forget to add things like wanting to feel safe and secure, to have companionship and to know your neighbours, to be active or to not want to feel isolated or lonely; all of these things will impact your overall health. When the list is complete it’s time to explore your options, as you evaluate the options think about what will provide for the greatest number of things on your list. For some people best will mean having home supports that come to them, for others it’s the comfort and security that comes from being with others, in sharing social activities and having help

Delta Hospice Annual Appeal 2015 Building A Compassionate Community Together When we talk about a Compassionate Community we talk about Bill’s story. Bill represents someone living with serious illness who is facing the end of life. He and his family are supported by the people who know them the best – each other, friends, neighbours and members of their community and health care team. Bill’s story is our how we face some of the most important events and challenges in life.
This is Bill. This is Bill’s family.
Bill has been seeing a doctor. The news is not good. It is incurable. Bill is devastated. So is his family. Bill tells his world: friends, colleagues, neighbours, school teachers and health team. They are all shocked and sad. But they all want to help, and although not experts, they know they love Bill the most. They are Bill’s Team. Bill’s Team will be there to listen, when Bill needs to talk, when Bill is angry, when Bill is sad. Bill’s Team will provide him with strength and will do what needs doing to help Bill live in the best way possible. Bill knows his Team will be there for his family now and when he is gone, as Bill will die. But he will die holding hands with Bill’s Team who love him. “During this season of giving, we ask you to consider including Delta Hospice. Science’s best workout to burn belly fat Weight lifting, not cardio, reigns supreme when it comes to the battle of the bulge
Well on Your Way
I
P.J. WREN
f you are over the age of 40, you may have noticed that things have shifted in the body. And by “things,” I mean fat. It now seems easier to gain inches around the middle than it is to lose them. Why is that? Well, if you are a woman, you can thank the decline of the hormone estrogen. This is a natural fat-burner for us and it dictates where our fat is distributed — with the middle-age distribution now happening all around our bellies (Mayo Clinic).
E E R F
And if you are a man, you can thank lower testosterone levels as you get older. There are other factors involved that are also adding inches to our waistlines (we just can’t blame Father Time and the joys of getting older). These include poor sleep, eating crap (scientific term), eating too much food (whether it is healthy or not), stress and not exercising enough. However, all can be cured and we can have the body we did in our younger days. In fact, you can have an even better body if you play your cards right. First off, we now know that not all exercise is created equal when it comes to burning fat. For example, in a study released by Harvard researchers (Obesity, 2014) they found that men who did 20 minutes of strength training a day had far less of an increase in abdominal fat than those who spent an equal amount of time

Strength training for If you are a woman, you weight loss just isn’t for us are probably thinking the
middle-aged folk either. In a study published in PubMed (JAMA Nov 2014) it was found that a combination of aerobic and strength training was the best tool to fight adolescent obesity. One of the explanations as to why strength training is the best weapon against fat (when we get older), is because we have lost some of our muscle mass. Losing muscle mass is a natural occurrence with age (as is losing our minds, our ability to read the small print and our inability to tolerate loud music in a restaurant). Most of us will lose between five to seven pounds of muscle each and every decade and ladies after the age of 30 we will also see an increase in our intramuscular fat (that nasty and dangerous fat that is located throughout the skeletal muscles and has been associated with conditions such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes).
Now, because of this loss of muscle mass, our metabolisms decrease (significantly), and with that comes a body not able to burn calories and fat like it used to and followed after that is the middleaged spread. There is a very easy way to offset this and that is to perform a regular strength training program. You want a full strength training program that addresses stability, core, balance and mobility, while also progressed each week so you continue to see changes in your fitness and your body composition. Rabbit Mix Breed, Grey, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 1 year and 5 months)
Earl Grey was brought in to the shelter through the Traveling Tails program, with his sibling Chai Latte. Earl Grey is a very active rabbit who will require space to roam around and explore his environment (an X-Pen set-up would be ideal rather than a cage set-up). Earl Grey is picky about his “bunny” friends, though he has taken a liking to Marie and Michelle! “Slow, 2-cages side by side for a couple months” introduction may work to partner him up with your lonely bunny at home!

Tsawwassen author launches latest book DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Tsawwassen author Peter Vassilopoulos is launching his latest book at the Vancouver Maritime Museum next month. Cruising the Inside Passage – Puget Sound to Alaska is a photographic memoir of his years of travelling up and down the coast. “What I’ve done is put together a collection of photographs I’ve taken primarily by boat but also, to a large extent, by ferry,” he says. The book also includes aerial photos. He’ll be giving a brief presentation and there will be a slideshow going while Vassilopoulos signs copies of his book at the launch event. He says people travelling the coast, something he’s done for over four decades, by boat, ferry and cruise ship come away with some fantastic memories. “What any person cruising the coast misses, and they see it in the book, I
believe will prompt them to want to go back.” He recalls one ferry trip he took with his wife Carla as a favourite. They took a camper and left Port Hardy, stopped over in Prince Rupert and then took Alaska state ferries up to Skagway, stopping at islands and getting to know the area along the way. Vassilopoulos has written a series of boating guidebooks and also published books for other authors. He founded Diver magazine and published it for 30 years. He still writes for Pacific Yachting magazine. The book launch is set for Thursday, Dec. 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Maritime Museum, 1905 Ogden Ave. He’ll also have the coffee table-style book at the Authors’ Booth at the Vancouver Boat Show in January. It will retail for $39.95. It will be available at book stores, including Albany Books in Tsawwassen and Black Bond Books in Ladner, and marine stores.

rated by the volunteer committee and will offer parents memories perhaps of a kinder, gentler Christmas. Each child will receive a goodie bag. Refreshments are available and children can enter their names in a draw for great prizes.
The event is free, however a donation box is provided should anyone wish to make a contribution towards next year’s event. Santa is happy to pose for photos but parents must bring cameras. “Santa tells us that sometimes the kiddies are
a little nervous with him, but this is easily alleviated with a little preparation ahead of time,” says committee chairman Geof Hacker. For more information, call 604-943-1303 or visit boundarybayparkassociation.wordpress.com.

Earthwisehosting Christmas Market
Earthwise Society will once again host a wonderfully festive, familyfriendly Christmas Market at the Earthwise Farm and Garden. The market, which has grown to fill two barns this year, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Presented in collaboration with Farm Fresh Events, the market will allow shoppers to sip some warm mulled cider while perusing the offerings of many vendors strolling in beautifully lit barns. Stop by Gesundheit Bakery for some savoury Old World organic breads, tasty pastries and gluten-free baking or hunt out some of your other favourite vendors from the Tsawwassen Saturday Market. When it’s time for lunch, check out the Pub Grub food truck. Kids can visit Santa’s Workshop to decorate homemade ornaments, enjoy story time hosted by the Fraser Valley Regional Library or have their face painted like Rudolph or an elf. Mr. Claus had such a great time here last year, he’s coming back, arriv-
ing on Santa’s Christmas tractor for photos with the kids. Earthwise will be offering a selection of organic winter vegetables including beets, greens, carrots and squash. Shoppers can also order a Holiday Harvest Box, a special selection of organic produce from the Earthwise Farm available for pick up on Saturday, Dec. 19, the last Earthwise Farm Store of the year. In addition to fresh produce, Earthwise Society will help add an old fashioned touch to holiday decorations with freshly cut organic cedar swags, holiday wreaths and centrepieces, and homemade Christmas ornaments. All proceeds support Delta Food Coalition, a community initiative that helps provide fresh produce to those in need in the community. For a full list of Christmas market vendors, check out Farm Fresh Events Facebook page or visit www.earthwisesociety.bc.ca. The Earthwise Farm and Garden are located at 6400-3rd Ave. in Boundary Bay.

Darkhorse Devils head to Nanaimo
Three-time defending B.C. champions will have a different role when provincials start Wednesday MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The South Delta Sun Devils will sail to the provincial “AAAA” girls volleyball championships in Nanaimo next week in a much different role than previous years. The three-time reigning B.C. champs will be a darkhorse in the 16-team event after a season that featured plenty of growing pains for this mainly Grade 11 group. South Delta secured its trip to the Island by placing fifth at last week’s Fraser Valley Championships. It was a result that showed the Sun Devils’ promise and their vulnerability too. The tournament’s fourth seed cruised into the semi-finals with a 3-1 win over Mission and headed to Cloverdale to take on No. 1 Lord Tweedsmuir. After dropping the opening set, the Devils pulled even and had a 23-19 lead in set three. However, the Panthers rallied for a 26-24 win and finished off South Delta in four games. The Sun Devils returned back home Friday, looking to secure a spot in the bronze medal game. However, they came out flat and never did find their form in a 3-1 loss to seventh seed Terry Fox. Suddenly, South Delta had gone from leading a semi-final match one night earlier to facing a must win situation just to secure a B.C. berth. The hosts rebounded by dispatching ninth seed Walnut Grove in straight sets. “We played our best match of the season the night before (against Tweedsmuir),” said coach Dan Burgess. “We executed our game plan and the girls were talking and communicating well. We ended up losing a really tight match to a very good team that has similar strengths (to us). “At that point I just wanted to be in the third place game but we came out flat against Fox. They are not a tall team but they rarely make mistakes or screw up. If you sacrifice 10 or 11 points in a game like we did, you are going to lose.” Stepping back from the end result, all Burgess wanted from the outset of the season was to

Next stop is provincials in Nanaimo. get his team to provincials and soak in the experience. Only two of his Grade 11s — Ashley Klassen and Kennedy Bonner — have been there before when they were aged up last season. There are definitely flashes of potential. Klassen is one of the elite setters in the province and was named to the Fraser Valley All-Star team. Get the ball into her wheelhouse and the Devils can look formidable with Jayde Robertsen, Bonner and Grade 12 Danielle Madore delivering much of the damage at the net. “We are going to be one of those low seeded teams that there won’t be a ton of excitement to face,” smiled Burgess. “The key will be our passing. “I can’t think of a team that
exemplifies it better that, you cannot not execute without passing, like our team does. When we are not passing well it can be tough to watch.” It’s why Burgess is taking a different approach in the final days of preparations for provincials. “At this point of the season, there is not a whole lot you can change,” he added. “But with this group we will just keep hammering away at the basics. My new goal is to be in the top eight and that would set us up well for next year.” At the net…. After a rough go in the very competitive Fraser Valley West Tier One League, the Delta Pacers got chance to face similar opponents at the Valley AAA playoffs. The Pacers ended up fourth in

the eight team event after falling 3-1 to Langley’s Mountain. Grade 11 Sarah Allan was named to the tournament all-star team. The Pacers senior boys team followed a similar path to the Sun Devils to earn their 14th berth to the provincial AAA championships in the last 16 years. The tournament’s third seed reached the semi-finals with a straight set win over Semiahmoo, but then fell to eventual champion Walnut Grove by the same score. Delta then lost 3-2 to Surrey Christian, before closing out the championships with a 3-1 win over Riverside to finish fifth. The provincials start next Wednesday at the Langley Events Centre with the Pacers seeded 14th in the 20 team event.

South Delta Pee Wee Rams won this game 22-14 over the Cloverdale Bobcats in route to a Vancouver Mainland Football League playoff berth where they eventually fell 19-16 to North Surrey in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, the Bantam Rams will look to take a step closer to repeating as provincial champions when they host the North Surrey Tigers in semi-final action Sunday 11 a.m. at Dennison Park.
Delta Pacers wrapped up another productive season in the pool at the recent B.C. Secondary Schools Swimming Championships in Kamloops. The contingent of 16 swimmers turned in a strong showing with all reaching the finals of their respective events, resulting in the Pacers finishing ninth among the 116 participating schools with with 230 points. The Grade 12 boys led the way with the team of Joey Arundel, Jared Beaton, Sam Lee and Dylan Ferguson finishing sixth in the 400m free relay and seventh in the 200m free relay. It is with great sadness and at the same time with so many wonderful memories, that we announce the passing of Evelyn Maud Howlett at the age of 88. Evelyn was born and raised in Vancouver. She passed away peacefully at the Kin Village Care Home in Tsawwassen. She is predeceased by her parents: Cecil and Emily (nee Lane) Willey, brothers Roy and Dennis, brother-in law Bill, sisters-in law Olive, June, Verna and Nadine, and her husband Roy. Evelyn is survived by: her children Keith and Kathy, daughter-in-law Anne, son-in-law Laurie and grandchildren Chelsea, Christine, Chloe, Nicole, Melissa, Lauren, and Russell. She is also survived by: her brother Gerry, sisters-in-law Sheila, Rosemary, Kathryn and Shirley, brother-in-law Bob and several cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She loved them all. She was a talented artist, musician, piano teacher and nurse. Evelyn loved many things in her life: golfing, cooking, playing her piano and violin, reading, gardening, walking her many poodles, shopping and going to the race-track, but especially watching and supporting her children and grandchildren grow, develop, and play sports. Most importantly, Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her life-partner and best friend, her husband of 52 years, Roy. We are comforted knowing they are together again, sharing their many common interests. Evelyn was truly a dedicated daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend and Nana and she will be missed by all of us. She always put the needs of others before her own. The family would like to thank the Kin Village Staff for their loving and supportive care. Mom (Nana), we love you, we will always cherish the time we had, and your spirit will continue to be with us. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

John passed away on Nov 19, 2015 at the age of 77 after a long battle with emphysema & COPD. He was predeceased by his son Mark (2004). Survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Jean. Children Mike (Leslie), Pam (Louis), Fiona, Moira (Kristien), seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Also survived by his sisters Erika, Renata & Ursula as well as many nieces and nephews. He was a long-time employee of CT&S and Telus. He was a man of few words, never out without his Tilley hat. He was inventive and hardworking, building his house that he lived in for 45 years, a cabin that he loved to spend time at with his family, a camper that they vacationed in, and a plane that he learned to fly.
