Auxiliary gives Mountain View residents early Christmas gift PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary made a very special announcement during its annual Light the Way celebration Wednesday evening at Delta Hospital’s Mountain View Manor. Pam Glass, a spokesperson for residents of the extended care unit, unwrapped a giant Christmas present delivered by Santa Claus that announced the auxiliary is buying a stateof-the-art community bus for Mountain View Manor. The auxiliary is providing Fraser Health with $125,000 to purchase the vehicle. Every year auxiliary volunteers host Light the Way, which serves as a Christmas party for Mountain View residents.

A group of local residents has come together to help Syrian refugees rebuild their lives right here in Ladner. Rev. Jim Short started looking into the possibility of bringing some of the millions of Syrian refugees to South Delta a few weeks ago. He began talking to people in the community and

soon a steering committee was organized and two homes in Ladner were donated. Delta Safe Haven is now in full swing and two families are destined for South Delta. Short estimates they will be here by the end of the month, although the timing could change. “All of a sudden we were here saying, ‘Let’s get this organized,’” Short said before a committee

It’s a little airport no more Re-activated runway is latest upgrade Alpha has undertaken at Boundary Bay SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It shouldn’t be referred to as Delta’s little airport anymore. That’s what Mayor Lois Jackson had to say at an event at Boundary Bay Airport Wednesday to celebrate the re-activation of runway 12/30. Originally used in the Second World War, an upgraded and reopened 656-foot stretch now connects to a main runway, increasing its landing capacity to 4,406 feet to allow a safer and more efficient separation and movement of aircraft. The $1.84-million project, which also includes drainage and lighting work, is the latest in a series of major upgrades since Alpha Aviation assumed responsibility as operator of the municipally-owned airport in 2004. The upgrades, which included the construction of a new hangar, have transformed Boundary Bay into a significant regional airport, Jackson said. “As we know, many small airports in this province are struggling to fund aging airport infrastructure. We are very thankful to have an airport operator willing to make an investment in our airport, investments that have improved safety, enhanced capacity and increased tax revenue for all Delta,” the mayor said. Jackson noted that since Alpha Aviation took over, Delta has seen an increase in property tax revenue from $142,000 to $2 million annually. “This project, combined

Mayor Lois Jackson and Alpha Aviation president and CEO Fred Kaiser cut the ribbon on the runway extension Wednesday. with the other recent investments, are helping to transform our little airport, as I’ve always called it, into a first-class regional airport like we have all envisioned it to be,” she said. Noting the longer runway configuration will allow for straighter approaches and, thus, less noise over populated areas, Alpha Aviation president and CEO Fred Kaiser said the partnership with Delta has resulted in ongoing and significant development of the airport. “We’re proud of having made the progress and we’re by no means there as of yet. There’s a lot of steps to be taken going forward and this step of the runway reactivation is one of those. We’re happy about it because we’re

making the airport safer, better and increased utilization.” The airport was originally re-activated in 1983, but it wasn’t until 1997 that Delta purchased it from Transport Canada for $10. At that time, it already had an operator, the Boundary Bay Airport Corporation. The relationship between Delta and that company soured to the point where the municipality tried to terminate the lease. Alpha Aviation would eventually take over and its relationship with Delta has been much rosier, to the point where it received a lease extension until 2099. In 2011, Delta agreed to a request by Alpha to lease lands that don’t

have direct access to the airport apron or runways for a wider range of users, including warehousing, wholesaling and distribution, as well as business park office uses. The first non-aviation business to set up shop there was BC Fresh. Alpha Aviation later received a proposal from the Dayhu Group of Companies to construct commercial distribution warehousing. Rather than lease the site on Churchill Street from Alpha, Dayhu requested to purchase the 18.4-hectare (46-acre) parcel from Delta, which was granted after the municipality received permission from Transport Canada. The land sale generated cash that was divided between Alpha and Delta

and the proceeds are going back into airport infrastructure projects. The airport sees over 200,000 takeoffs and landings every year, making it one of the busiest in Canada. It’s home to several aviation operations, including flight training schools and flying clubs. In 2006, Delta received a provincial grant to extend one of the runways that allowed for small commuter and business traffic. The latest extension project now gives air traffic controllers greater flexibility in managing the traffic. Jackson also noted ongoing plans for the airport lands include an emergency operations centre, a project that could see construction begin in 2017.

Town hall meeting set for next Wednesday at Ladner United CONTINUED from Page 1 Delta Safe Haven is starting a fundraising effort to supplement the basic amount to create an income necessary for them to live in the community and put their efforts toward learning English, finding employment, enrolling in school and adapting to their new home. Basic furniture, clothing and household items will already be covered, but the group is hoping for dona-

tions of cash or gift cards. All the funds will be held in a trust account for the families. Delta Safe Haven is also looking for donated services, such as family physicians, dentists, optometrists, lawyers, accountants and financial counselling. Short said that to respect the Syrians’ cultural traditions, the group is seeking both male and female service providers. The group is also hoping to find people who are

fluent in Arabic and willing to donate their services for potential translation needs. Anyone interested in volunteering can email Jim Short at minister@ladnerunited.org. The group stresses it is confident the federal government is taking any security issues seriously and that the screening process is thorough and rigorous. Delta Safe Haven is hosting a town hall meet-

ing on Wednesday, Dec. 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Ladner United Church (4960-48th Ave.). Chris Friesen, director of services at the Immigrants Services Society of B.C., who grew up in Ladner and graduated from Delta Secondary, will speak at the meeting. There will be other presentations on refugee sponsorship. Monetary donations can be dropped off at Ladner United Church weekdays

between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cheques should be made out to Delta Safe Haven — Ladner United Church. The committee includes Coun. Sylvia Bishop, Gerry Bouman, who has helped co-ordinate the private sponsorship of refugees through Ladner Christian Reformed Church, Diane Schmidt, who co-chairs the committee along with Short, Betty Mackenzie, Tony Dales and Nancy Willborn.

Led by the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers, residents of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts dug into their wallets to fight an unpopular proposal. “We are gratified that our small communities have prevailed in a case where we were outgunned and out-spent,” added Jennifer Urquhart, the coalition’s treasurer. “This win shows what can be done when ordinary citizens of two countries unite behind a common

cause — in this case to protect our quality of life and health from an unwanted tower array on our shared peninsula.” Urquhart said the coalition, with the help of hundreds of volunteers and donor funds and inkind services, was able to drive the effort to a suc-

cessful conclusion. Total legal costs are estimated at $250,000, about $15,000 of which still needs to be raised. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington congratulated the citizens’ group. “It is a wonderful Christmas present for the entire community. The

Cross Border Coalition (to Stop the Radio Towers) achieved an enormous victory by engaging in thorough research and consistent opposition. As Deltans know so well, it isn’t easy to fight the system and it is harder still to win. But win they did and we are all grateful.”

Now they can celebrate a hard fought victory. Tsawwassen and Point Roberts residents, including members of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers, had Nov. 30 circled on the calendar as it was the deadline for a controversial radio station to file a further appeal in U.S. court. Nothing was filed by that date, which means the application to erect radio transmission towers just south of the international border in Point Roberts is officially dead. Now that the deadline has passed, those who have battling the application on several fronts are elated they came out victorious in what’s been a costly and lengthy battle. “I am reminded of the great Yogi Berra quote, ‘It’s not over ‘til it’s over,’ and finally... it is really over,” the coalition’s Armene Belless told the Optimist this week. “No radio towers will be built by the border.”

BBC Broadcasting Inc. had been seeking to overturn a decision by Whatcom County to reject the company’s application to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres from the Tsawwassen border. The company lost an appeal in Skagit County Superior Court, but could have filed an appeal of that ruling. The county had earlier ruled the towers exceeded height limits in the American peninsula. BBC Broadcasting recently submitted a declaration to the U.S. Federal Communications Commission that another court appeal would not be filed, but the the company is seeking renewal of its license to continue broadcasting using its current antenna in Ferndale. That infrastructure beams radio station Sher-E-Punjab AM 1550’s signal into the Lower Mainland. For more information about the coalition or to donate, go to www.notowers.webs.com.

The business was able to provide information to police that identified a possible suspect. The incident still under investigation to locate the suspect. • Nov. 28, 5:19 p.m., 6400-block of Meadow Place: Complainant reported her husband’s two unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway had been rummaged through and hockey gear stolen. Hockey gear later located in the bushes at a nearby residence. • Nov. 28, 6:15 a.m., 5300-block of Admiral Way: Report received from complainant that her vehicle with keys was stolen from her driveway. Using the On Star program, police were able to locate the vehicle in Surrey. Surrey RCMP advised and held the vehicle until it could be recovered by Delta police. The vehicle was impounded for forensic examination and the complainant was advised to change the garage security as the door opening fob was missing from the keys in the vehicle. • Nov. 30, 1:28 a.m., Windjammer Road and Ferry Road: During a routine police patrol the community mailbox was found ajar. No obvious signs of break-in or information of any theft. Canada Post advised of the incident.

ost community uprisings don’t have such a happy ending. When an unpopular initiative is put forward — think high voltage power lines or a reduction in hospital services — a citizens’ group invariably forms and a lengthy and costly campaign is undertaken to try and stop it. Some of these shows of resistance have met with varying degrees of success, but it’s rare indeed for the little guy to score an unequivocal victory. I’m happy to report that’s the case for the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers, which found out earlier this week the broadcaster that wanted to erect five 150-foot AM towers just south of the Point Roberts border has decided not to appeal a court ruling rejecting the plan. The decision not to appeal sticks a fork in the project and brings an end to two-plus years of often head-banging work by a dedicated group of residents. I suspect none of the key players in the coalition knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they signed on for the fight, but their neighbours on both sides of the line should be grateful these folks were not only willing to step up but were committed to seeing the battle through to the end. Locating 50,000-watt radio towers on the doorstep of a population centre the size of Tsawwassen contravenes both common sense and government regulations, but somehow, thanks largely to that international border, the proposal managed to make it through the early stages. At that point it was met by a stubborn (and I mean that in a good way) group of people that was determined not to let it get any further. It seemed obvious these towers, like all others, should be in a location far removed from residences, but it took over two years and in excess of two hundred grand for that realization to finally take hold. They had logic, and much else, on their side, but a victory wouldn’t have been possible without an unwavering commitment to the cause. In these instances it can often turn into a war of attrition where community activists get worn down and eventually end up waving a white flag. The fact that didn’t happen in this case is a testament to those leading the crossborder coalition. Chalk one up for the little guy.

Interest in public affairs began early for councillor Kanakos

D

elta councillors are a dedicated lot and like civic politicians generally, they seldom receive recognition or credit for collective decisions in creating safe and livable communities. This is the second of a series delving into private lives and civic responsibilities of Delta’s elected officials. Jeannie Kanakos’ journey to Delta began on Vancouver’s North Shore in a family of four. Her mother was interested in community and political affairs. As a teenager she recalls meeting Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson in 1967. A graduate of the public school system, she enjoyed a year’s enrollment at Little Flower Academy in Vancouver. She was a good student-athlete with a passion for basketball. While enrolled at Capilano College, she was elected to the student council. Kanakos’ high level basketball skills resulted in a full scholarship to Simon Fraser University. She graduated with a history degree specializing in aboriginal land history. While at university she met future husband Nick Kanakos, SFU football and basketball star. In 1980, Jeannie and Nick moved to North Delta and raised four children. While Nick enjoyed 35 years as a teacher in the Delta education system, Jeannie enrolled at the Justice Institute and obtained

Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND

certification in aboriginal treaty negotiations. These were busy times in the Kanakos household with shared family and homemaker responsibilities. In 1988, Jeannie was employed by the Department of Indian Affairs and involved in the treaty process. She also found time and interest in Delta municipal affairs. She became aware of the community’s interest in preserving and protecting Burns Bog and soon became an active member of the Burns Bog Conservation Society. Ever the busy person, she also took out a membership in the left leaning Cit-A-Del political organization centered in North Delta. Kanakos’ first foray into Delta’s municipal affairs was in 1999 as a candidate in a school board by-election won by well-known retired school principal Bill Kushnir. Undaunted by her setback and exhilarated by the process, Kanakos was also endorsed

in 1999 by IDEA, a South Delta organization, for a seat on Delta council. While unsuccessful, she gained confidence as her plurality increased and she recognized the need to increase her community profile. After venturing unsuccessfully into provincial politics, Kanakos was first elected in 2005 as a Delta councillor. She has since been re-elected and in 2014 she received the second most votes among council candidates. Now with a four-year mandate, she espouses a passion for climate change, environmental issues, aboriginal affairs and “greening of transportation.” This stylish and fit grandmother of two has competed in triathlons and remains an active cyclist. As a council representative, Kanakos chairs the Delta Heritage Advisory Commission and vice chair of the Community Planning Advisory Committee, amongst her appointment to six civic committees. Jeannie and Nick are both kept busy with their civic responsibilities and family. Jeannie seems comfortable in her role as senior councillor. Her constituents watch with interest her evolution into the role as an incisive and collaborative decision maker on Delta council. And a good night to you, Nick. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

One of the remarkable things about this battle was that it solidified a bond between the communities of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts in a way that no issue has done in the past. Focus on affordable transit, not more tax hikes

Editor: I see the grifters of tax and spend are at it again, trying to sell road tolls and/or road pricing to the public. It is sad that so many people spend time trying to increase taxes and so few try to provide affordable transit and transportation options. To date, all major

Oh Behave!

transit projects in Metro Vancouver have been expensive political vanity projects with little thought for the future, except to cut ribbons at election time. The Expo and Millennium lines were built with full knowledge of provincial and civic politicians that the proprietary ALRT/ART system costs up to three times more to install, costs more to operate and more to maintain than modern

light rail, needing huge subsidies. The $2.4 billion Canada Line is not just a vanity project, it’s an international joke, being the only heavy-rail metro in the world, built as a lightmetro, with less capacity than a simple streetcar, costing less than one-third to build. The South Fraser Perimeter Road was a very expensive vanity project, which cheaper options

will take the car and those who can’t, forced to take our decrepit, yet expensive public transit system. That the public deemed TransLink (in reality the premier’s office) incapable of planning an affordable transit and transportation system has been lost as the charlatans of regional planning continue their tax and spend ways. Say no to this cynical tax grab. Malcolm Johnston

one-third more than cities like Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto. A bankrupt regional transportation policy that sees even more expensive vanity projects being built, such as the Broadway SkyTrain subway and the Surrey LRT, which in turn will need new massive subsidies to build and operate them. Also, the region will be “Balkanized” with those who can afford to travel

would have provided a better service. The Port Mann Bridge and the George Massey Tunnel replacement, more of the same, expensive vanity projects instead of much cheaper, just as efficient options and now needing expensive tolls to help defray costs. What has this “back of an envelope” vanity planning done for the region? TransLink’s cost per revenue passenger is a full

Editor: Re: Much needs to be revealed about plan for the bridge, letter to the editor, Nov. 18 Much has, in fact, been revealed, but it seems few bothered to seek it ... or respond when invited to participate in its preparation. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has a very extensive website. There one learns of projects in the planning stage, including the George Massey Tunnel replacement.

A schedule outlines “Stages of Planning and Consultation.” Two stages, including data collection and analysis, technical studies and two rounds of public consultations, are complete. Extensive results are published on the website. In addition to bridge renderings, there are also five technical reports. The project is now in its third stage: Design Refinements and added Consultation. Following this stage there is to be decision on whether to

proceed. If a decision is made to proceed, there are to be Environmental Assessment, Procurement and Construction stages. Claiming there’s no information available confirms one didn’t bother to look. Whether the information is adequate is another matter and, it seems to me, reflects in part in public disinterest in repeated public consultation invitations. Perhaps the most regrettable of all is the ministry’s failure to refer to information on its website when responding to a freedom of information request. But then, it seems to me, a reading of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act suggests it wasn’t required to do so. Ed Ries

shopper from village

Editor: I am a Ladner resident who has always loved shopping local and spending time in Ladner Village. There is a lot of Ladner’s history there and the local store owners are some of the most genuine people around who love their community. Sadly I find myself shopping less and less locally and this is due to one problematic factor — parking. The parking stalls within the village are three-hour spots and people take advantage of them. Why aren’t people receiving tickets for parking in the village all day? What about reverting to one-hour spots or even

two hours? I would love to shop local, buy local and support a family putting food on its table and paying for its children’s sports rather than support a CEO buying his fifth vacation home. But when I come to Ladner Village, if I can’t park, I know that if I go to Home Depot, Richmond Centre, Walmart, etc,, they will have parking for me. I am also afraid that with the new malls coming in Tsawwassen, more and more people will begin to come to this conclusion and Ladner Village will be the only one to suffer, not the shopper. LNG can’t contaminate water or soil

Editor: Re: LNG plant comes with too much risk, letter to the editor, Nov. 27 I would like to address Bill Sharkey’s question about how the processing and transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) are different from crude oil. The most important thing for people to know is LNG is non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-flammable and non-explosive. It can-

not contaminate water or soil. In the past 50 years, LNG carriers have travelled 135,000 voyages and 240 million kilometres worldwide, and there has never been a major release of LNG from a carrier due to a collision, explosion, fire or hull failure. If LNG ever did contact water, it would float on the surface, and as it quickly warmed up, it would disperse into the air without

harming marine life. Like our Tilbury LNG facility, which has safely operated since 1971, a facility on Tsawwassen First Nation lands would be built in a designated industrial area. The facility and any associated natural gas pipelines would be built to withstand natural hazards, including earthquakes and flooding. FortisBC’s facilities and transmission system have

excellent safety records because emergency preparedness is woven into our culture. It will be up to Tsawwassen First Nation members to determine if LNG is something they would like to see on their lands. We look forward to their decision. Employment Opportunities at The Wexford The Wexford — our newest Bria community in beautiful, sunny Tsawwassen — opens in February 2016.

Dr. Raj Dhiman and Riverside Dental’s Cash for Candy program raised $1,000 for Delta Hospital and helped promote a healthier Halloween for kids in Ladner. Over the past five years, the fundraiser has raised a total of $6,500 for Delta Hospital by donating $2 for every pound of Halloween candy collected. “The Cash for Candy fundraiser is such a great example of our generous and caring business community stepping up for Delta Hospital,” says Sharla De Groote,

special events manager for the Delta Hospital Foundation. “They have taken something they are passionate about, and turned it into a successful fundraiser that supports the health of our community. We are so grateful for their ongoing support.” With children of his own, and many young patients frequenting the practice, Dhiman wanted to make sure the health impacts of Halloween weren’t overlooked. He created the Cash for Candy program as a crea-

tive way of rewarding children for moderating their sugar intake while raising awareness of both oral and general health at the same time. “We had a lot of families drop by this year to donate their candy,” says Dhiman. “Parents were excited to find a healthier alternative for their kids, without taking away the fun and excitement of Halloween trick-or-treating.” Riverside Dental donated the collected candy to the Agape Street Ministries, an addiction recovery centre.

Growing agency is on the move

Tsawwassen Insurance has recently moved to a new, larger location on 56th Street, around the corner from its previous home. “We loved our old location,” says Barbara Mills, general manager of Tsawwassen Insurance and longterm resident of Tsawwassen. “It wasn’t a big space but it was intimate. We are 100 per cent committed to our community and as such, we knew we needed to expand the size of our team and consequently the office space, to accommodate the increasing number of clients. Even parking was becoming an issue.” The business is also celebrating its 10th anniversary of becoming part of the InsureBC Group. As a member of InsureBC, Tsawwassen Insurance, which has grown to six full-time bro-

kers from two in the last decade, has been able to capitalize on the extensive resources offered through its affiliation with one of the largest insurance broker networks in Canada. What has made this insurance brokerage special, however, is its ability to offer an array of unique products and services through a purely local team of well-trained, qualified insurance specialists. “South Delta is a very special place with service needs that are just as unique” says Mills. “Our clients have diverse needs and high expectations when it comes to customer service. Our office is fortunate to represent a large number of top-rated insurance companies, which allows us to find suitable products that meet the unique needs of each of our customers. “But each and every

Mother-daughter team up for counselling practice

Mother-daughter counsellors Susan and Janelle Vanderwerff have teamed up to not only open a new practice, Encourage Counselling, but they are also offering an upcoming parenting workshop. Susan has spent several years working in private practice in South Delta. Janelle grew up in Tsawwassen and took her first psychology course while attending South Delta Secondary. When she was working on her undergraduate degree, Janelle decided to major in psychology and recently graduated from Adler University in Vancouver with a master’s degree in counselling psychology. “Growing up it was nice seeing my mom doing a job that she enjoyed,” Janelle said of ending up on the same career path. Janelle has now returned to live in South Delta and mother and

to raise the self-esteem and social awareness in their children,” Susan said. The two women have first-hand experience with the respectful parenting method. Susan learned the method when she was completing her master’s degree and implemented the practice on her own two daughters, who were 11 and 13 at the time. “I am excited to bring my counselling expertise to the town that supported me in getting me to where I am today,” Janelle said. “Now it’s my privilege to give back to our community. By providing parenting education, we are cultivating the soil to ensure that respectful parenting practices are deeply rooted in the positive development of our youth… My mom took this course when I was a teenager and

This Sunday is the 6th of December and while that may just be a date on the calendar marking the end of a “shopping week,” for many people it will have a different context. I was a seminary student in 1989 and dean of the theological residence in Montreal. It was exam week and I was studying with fellow students when the phone began to ring, and continued to ring for most of the evening. Many parents were calling me to see if their daughters were safe. Turning on the TV, we began to hear the terrors happening at the University of Montreal where one young man gunned down 14 women.

The story is told of a young man named Nicholas who was quite wealthy. One day while travelling through a village he overheard a sad tale of a father who could not afford a dowry for any of his three daughters. They would be forced to fend for themselves. So that night Nicholas slipped three gold coins through the window and they fell into the stockings of the three girls. Such a gift brought new life and possibilities to them all. This was an unprovoked act leaving joy and possibilities. Each and every day is a new possibility for new life — let’s make this one count for the glory of God.

This was an unprovoked act leaving only sorrow, grief and fear for all. But there is another story to be told and remembered on this day — but it’s a story of joy and gift-giving.

Bill has been seeing a doctor. The news is not good. It is incurable. Bill is devastated. So is his family. Bill tells his world: friends, colleagues, neighbours, school teachers and health team. They are all shocked and sad. But they all want to help, and although not experts, they know they love Bill the most. They are Bill’s Team. Bill’s Team will be there to listen, when Bill needs to talk, when Bill is angry, when Bill is sad. Bill’s Team will provide him with strength and will do what needs doing to help Bill live in the best way possible. Bill knows his Team will be there for his family now and when he is gone, as Bill will die. But he will die holding hands with Bill’s Team who love him. “During this season of giving, we ask you to consider including Delta Hospice. You, as donors, are partners with us as we aim to strengthen community clinicians, volunteers, teachers, citizens and other partners who are working together to address pain and suffering wherever it occurs.”

Grade 9 student Uma Tiurpenko plays Anne Frank in Southpointe Academy’s latest play. The Diary of Anne Frank runs next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

outhpointe Academy presents The Diary of Anne Frank next week. A really good group of students are involved in the production, notes director and Southpointe drama teacher Greg Kean. “It’s one of those plays where they have to go

deep into their imaginations and try to figure out what it would’ve been like for these people, to be in hiding and to be in fear for their lives, and knowing if they’re caught they’re going to a concentration camp to be killed,” says Kean. “It’s a lot to ask of a high school student.” The play, by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, tells the story of Anne Frank, a young girl

who lived in hiding with her family during the Nazi occupation of Holland and is eventually captured. Students have been rehearsing since the second week of school. Grade 9 student Uma Tiurpenko plays Frank. “It’s been a big challenge for me because I’ve never done anything like this,” she says, explaining that it’s her first time acting in a play.

Kean says Tiurpenko is doing really well. “She’s learning the technical aspects of acting but the natural qualities she brings to the role are really, really good.” Kean says he’s heard this production isn’t really a holiday season play. “It’s one of those plays, when you come away from it, it gives you that ability to be thankful for what you have. In the holiday sea-

son you want to be appreciative and not take things for granted. I think looking at a piece like this in the holiday time is going to make you feel a lot more appreciative for what we have and how we can live today.” The play runs Dec. 10, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. at Southpointe, 1900-56th St., Tsawwassen. Tickets are $10. Call 604-948-8826 or buy tickets at the door.

Brad Rines takes a closer look at everyday objects in his photography exhibit on now at the Tsawwassen Library. Urban Abstracts includes about 35 photos, mostly shot locally, showing details in ordinary things people tend to ignore or pass by. “I just like to watch for interesting compositions in everyday things around

us. People just miss those things so often. I try not to think about what the object is I’m shooting, I’m just looking for the design or composition as I’m doing it. What it is doesn’t really matter,” he says. Just a few examples include tires, a high school running track and a shipping container used for storage. He says he’s always been interested in abstract art because of its expressive quality and taking this

style of photos could be his version “of stopping to smell the roses.” Rines, who lives in Tsawwassen, got his first camera in 1979. Most of the pictures on display are recent, while some are quite old. There is a reception Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the library, 1321A 56th St. Rines will be in attendance. Urban Abstracts is on display for the month of December.

The sun is out, the day is cool, crisp and beautiful, and I am doing something I’ve loved to do since I was a toddler – skating. I am not just skating in circles around the local arena, mind you; I’m off with my family, gliding along the longest skating rink in the world, Ottawa’s Rideau Canal. The iconic skate-way is one of the must-do activities in Ottawa, and one of those things I have wanted to cross off my bucket list. We laced up our skates in the warming hut at the south end of the ice-way, by the Dow’s Lake Pavilion near Carleton University, and headed out to skate the full 7.8-kilometre frozen route into downtown Ottawa near the National Arts Centre. One million people skate this ice-way every winter, and many locals use it to commute to and from work and school. We pass skaters with knap-

sacks and briefcases – it sure beats taking the bus! There are tiny two-year olds learning to skate for the first time, parents pushing youngsters in sleds and older couples skating amorously handin-hand. My wife and I skate arm-in-arm, not that I am so romantically inclined, but my wife insists on having me to lean on. Winter in Ottawa means Beaver Tails, the delicious, addictive wholewheat pastries that are hand-stretched, fried and served piping hot, then topped with butter and your choice of delectable flavours. They can be enjoyed at stands built along the Rideau ice. With all the exercise I need some sustenance, so I stop and try the Maple Bacon. If you’d prefer something a little more regal, at the north end of the skate is the Chateau Laurier’s stately turrets, which welcome visitors with “High Tea.” Preparations for the

DOVE continues to shine light on violence issue

Barn owls in the spotlight PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

Simon Fraser University researcher Sophie Hindmarch was the key speaker at Barn Owls in Delta: Species on the Brink at the Southlands Barn late last month. Approximately 100 people attended the afternoon session to learn about Delta’s barn owl population and what can be done to protect the species that is in a fight for survival.

Events mark Day of Remembrance JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m s t .c o m

Sunday marks National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women and a local organization is planning events throughout the community. It was on Dec. 6, 1989 that 14 women were murdered at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique. The victims were targeted simply because they were women. The day is often marked by the wearing of purple ribbons to signal remembrance of women affected by violence and to promote discussion and action surrounding violence against women. As part of the campaign, and to support and raise awareness for the cause, the Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere Committee (DOVE) is hosting community events to hand out purple ribbons, and provide information, resources and support to the public. The committee will visit

local high schools today during the lunch hour. On Saturday, the committee will be at Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., and on Sunday DOVE will set up at the Ladner Leisure Centre from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Caber, the Delta Police Department’s victim services trauma dog, will join the committee for the event in Ladner. DOVE’s main objective is to increase public awareness surrounding violence in any type of relationship, and its efforts work toward reducing any gaps or duplications in services that may exist. DOVE is made up of members from various community service agencies within Delta, including Delta police’s victim services and domestic violence units, whose focus is the prevention of relationship violence through education. For more information about DOVE, visit www. deltapolice.ca/dove.

Devil of a time as Vanier Cup champs South Delta grads help UBC cap remarkable turnaround season with national title MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Chris Adams had never won a championship playing sports in his entire life. That all changed in one magic month for the UBC Thunderbirds. The fourth-year defensive back ended his university football career in grand style by helping UBC capture the Vanier Cup with a thrilling 26-23 last-second win over the defending champion Montreal Carabins last Saturday in Quebec City. It was the Thunderbirds’ first national title since 1997. The UBC roster also featured three other South Delta Sun Devil graduates — fourth year linebacker Riley Jones, third-year receiver David Mann and red shirt freshman Bryce Connors. Adams hadn’t played organized football until his friends, including Jones, convinced him to give it a try in his Grade 11 year at South Delta. The Sun Devils fielded very competitive teams for the next two seasons but failed to win a playoff game. Adams and Jones both earned roster spots with UBC in 2011 where the Thunderbirds reached the conference final but were later stripped of all their wins for using an ineligible player. Two difficult seasons followed, including a 2-6 2014 campaign that resulted in the departure of head coach Shawn Olson. If that wasn’t enough, a year earlier the funding for the football program was in question as part of a review of all varsity sports at UBC. However, a group of prominent alumni, headed by David Sidoo, insured UBC Football had a future and then some. The Thunderbirds made

waves last December by hiring Blake Nill as their new head coach. He had enjoyed an outstanding nine-year run at the University of Calgary that included six Canada West championships and three Vanier Cup appearances. Surely, it would take at least a couple of seasons for the T-Birds’ to climb to those heights, or so it seemed. Nill sent the T-Birds’ inflight when he convinced quarterback Michael O’Connor to come north after the highly-touted Ottawa native was unhappy with his situation at Penn State University after one season. UBC got off to a surprising 3-1 start and O’Connor was putting up big numbers. One of his favourite targets was Mann, who had 13 catches for 294 yards over that stretch, before being sidelined for the season with a broken collarbone. The Thunderbirds would go on to finish second in the conference and earned a semi-final home playoff game where they thumped Manitoba 52-10. A week later, they stunned No. 1 ranked and unbeaten Calgary 34-26 at McMahon Stadium to win the Hardy Cup. The momentum continued in Nova Scotia as UBC rolled to a 36-9 win over St. Francis Xavier, setting the stage for last weekend’s thriller against Montreal. “It’s all still so surreal for me,” said Adams on Tuesday. “We’re all just kind of sitting here and can’t believe what just happened. All those years playing sports and I didn’t even win a medal. Now I’m going out with this. “I think we proved you don’t win games on paper.

Teammates since their days as co-captains with the South Delta Sun Devils, Chris Adams (left) and Riley Jones were all smiles last Saturday in Quebec City where the UBC Thunderbirds captured the Vanier Cup national championship. The thing about Coach Nill is he makes sure everyone is accountable for their actions at all times.” As for Jones, football has been a huge part of his life. He enjoyed a two season stretch with the Bantam Rams where they didn’t lose a game, before an all-star high school career. The overall lack of success at the university level was all new to him. “I think over the years with the Rams we went something like 49-0 so losing was something I wasn’t

used to,” laughed Jones. “We had already beaten Manitoba twice so that (first playoff win) wasn’t a big surprise. But to go into Calgary, play great and beat a team we had lost to (badly) the last three years, really had us believing we can do this.” The extra month added onto to this season cut into study time. UBC also elected to stay back east after the win in Halifax to prepare for the Vanier Cup. That meant doing plenty of school

work on the road with a mandatory study hall, under the supervision of the team’s academic coordinator Sandra Wigg. “At that time, our focus would normally only be on school with mid-terms at the forefront,” added Jones who is working on a degree in Psychology and has a year of eligibility remaining. “It was a big part of our week back there.” Adams is finishing up his degree Speech Sciences.

Tough start for Hawks over difficult stretch MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Ice Hawks have stumbled out of the gate during a four games in seven nights stretch as they continue their struggles with consistency this season. Riding a four game unbeaten streak into Minoru Arenas on Monday, the Ice Hawks were blitzed for three goals in the opening 12 minutes and never recovered in a 5-2 loss to the hometown Richmond Sockeyes. Twenty-fours later, it was more of the same at the Ladner Leisure Centre as the visiting Grandview Steelers struck for a pair of opening goals and that was more than enough in a 4-0 victory. The losses leave Delta in fourth place in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference with an 11-9-13 record and in danger of losing touch with the frontrunners. Defending league champion North Vancouver Wolf Pack are now 11 points clear, while the second place Steelers have opened a six point lead. The Hawks’ offensive production appears to be feast or famine on any given night as new coach Jeremy Poirier and his staff try and develop some kind of chemistry with this roster. Back in early November, Delta man-

aged just nine goals over four games, that included three losses and a tie. The offence then came life over the past three weeks, producing 19 goals during the latest unbeaten streak. Now, the attack appears to be sputtering again. The Hawks did manage 30 shots Tuesday but couldn’t solve Steeler veteran Cole MacInnes. In Richmond, rookie blueliner Devon Mussio finally beat Kurt Russell midway through the second period. Gary Dhaliwal added a third period power play marker, the 18-year-old’s ninth goal in just 15 games. The Ice Hawks visit Ridge Meadows tonight and are at the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday afternoon for a return match against the Steelers. Next home game is Tuesday night when the league leading Mission City Outlaws visit Ladner at 7:35 p.m. Icing… The Ice Hawks have added a familiar name to their blueline with the signing Nolan Gallagher, the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens star Brendan Gallagher. The 18-year-old South Delta Hockey Academy graduate from Tsawwassen had been playing for the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Gallagher made his debut against Richmond and earned an assist on Dhaliwal’s third period goal.

We remember you in the joy of the smiles of the kids on the ’Bounty of Krister’ learning how to sail, or in the beauty of an eagle soaring the skies along the Bluff or across Boundary Bay.

Surprise!

We’ve witnessed your spirit in many places and known your soul in those who have been born after you left us. You may have crossed the threshold, but we haven’t let you go from our hearts and our cher− ished memories. We thank you for keeping watch over us. We all miss you and love you beyond words − es− pecially your Mom, Dad, and two beautiful sisters. But I’m certain you know that. You’ve always known. Love from your many friends in Tsawwassen, Swe− den and around the globe, your friends in Sea Scouts, and all your friends from S.D.S.S Grad Class of 1990. Until we meet again, my friend.

Greetings of the Season

To place your birthday announcement call

DOUTHWAITE, James It is the deepest sorrow that we announce James’ passing at the age of 54 on November 28, 2015. James was naturally a very quiet, gentle and polite man, very loved by his brothers and sister. Also he was very close to his clients & friends. A memorial service at St. David’s Anglican Church at 1115-51 A Street, Delta on Saturday December 12th, at 11:00 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.

McKNIGHT, Donald Ross October 12th, 1927 – November 30th, 2015 .

Don passed peacefully and is survived by his wife Bunny (62 years), son Rick (Joyce), daughter Laurie Fanning (Dave), grandchildren Amanda (Lee), Ryan and Trevor, great grandchild Ella, as well as his sisters Val and Shelagh. He was born in Winnipeg, the 9th of 10 children. Don moved to Vancouver in 1955. He worked for TCA then Air Canada from 1948-1977. Upon retiring he opened Richmond Trophies with his wife and daughter. He loved to golf and travel, often with all of his family. One of his great joys in life was to challenge his grandchildren to a game of crib. He loved the simple things in life, a quiet patio with a view of the ocean and a good Barbados rum. He will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Irene Thomas Hospice – deltahospice.org No funeral by request.

There may be a chill in the air, but our hearts are warmed by thoughts of our many good friends and neighbors at this special time of year. Thanks, folks!
