January 8, 2016 The Delta Optimist A3

As we settle into a new year, Delta’s police chief took time out to reflect on the year that was and to look ahead to 2016. Neil Dubord was sworn in June 29, replacing Jim Cessford, who retired last February after leading the department for 20 years. “It’s been a wonderful seven months,” Dubord said of his time in Delta so far, adding he has enjoyed getting to know the community and its residents. Last year started off with a “real bang” for the department, he said, with Delta’s first homicide on Jan. 2. A 24-year-old Surrey man, Arundeep Cheema, was fatally shot while sitting in his vehicle in the driveway of a North Delta home. A year later Cheema’s death remains unsolved but the investigation is active and ongoing, Dubord said. The shooting was one of more than 60 in Surrey and North Delta last year, although only five took place in Delta, three of which were at the same house. The area hasn’t seen a shooting since early April. “Our staff has done an amazing job in stopping shootings in the community,” said Dubord, who had been chief of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police prior to arriving in Delta. He said the department is trying to take a proactive approach to dealing with the violence. Officers are still doing outreach work in the area and a special

enforcement car has been assigned to Scott Road. Officers are also working with bars and restaurants in the area to deter possible gang-related activities. A highlight for the department this summer, Dubord said, was the announcement from the Crown that it had stayed the second-degree murder charge against Const. Jordan MacWilliams.

tainly for the Tsawwassen community,” Dubord said. The chief said the summer was a busy time for the department with all the community activities, such as Tour de Delta, Tsawwassen Sun Festival and Ladner May Days. Dubord said he took every opportunity to get out, enjoy the festivities and meet people. He said the depart-

end items and often leave expensive items and garage door openers in unlocked vehicles. “It’s really crimes of opportunity,” he said. Delta saw three traffic fatalities in 2015, the latest being an elderly pedestrian hit in early December while crossing at the corner of 56th Street and 12th Avenue in Tsawwassen. Dubord said he was

MacWilliams was charged after an onduty shooting in 2012 when, as a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team, he responded to a hostage taking at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster. Also over the summer, police discovered a drug lab in a South Delta home while responding to calls of a break and enter. The lab was allegedly producing a highly concentrated form of marijuana known as shatter at the home in a quiet Tsawwassen neighbourhood. “That was unusual, cer-

ment also took part in several annual events, raising record amounts for Cops for Cancer, Special Olympics, the United Way and Pulling Together. As summer turned into fall, he said, the department saw a spike in property crimes, particularly in South Delta. Officers were able to arrest two groups of people in relation to many of the crimes, and that seemed put a stop to much of that activity. Dubord said officers heard directly from thieves that South Delta neighbourhoods are often targeted because many people can afford higher

The chief said the department saw 22,738 calls for service as of the end of November, which is slightly higher than 2014. And it’s a trend he expects to see continue. The addition of South Fraser Perimeter Road makes it easier for criminals to get into Delta, he said, and the area will see an influx of visitors with mega malls opening this year at the

Tsawwassen First Nation. This year is shaping up to be a busy one for the department. Dubord said he would like to really integrate the CoPS offices into the communities. Each community in Delta has a community police station, staffed almost entirely by volunteers, and the chief said he would like to see those offices become a central part of each community. Three members, all with more than 35 years’ experience, have recently or will be retiring, including deputy Chief Rich Drinovz, who retired last month. “We’re going to be hiring a new deputy chief in the early part of the new year,” he said. Internally, the department will work with employees and the police foundation to develop an employee wellness program to ensure officers are adequately coping with the demands of the job. “They go to some horrific stuff,” Dubord said, adding that it can affect many aspects of an officer’s life. The department will also work to strengthen its relationship with the Tsawwassen First Nation. Saying the force already has a good partnership with the First Nation, Dubord said the area is in the midst of tremendous growth that will bring an influx of people and traffic. He said there is a lot of planning that will go on, especially with regards to the opening of the malls. “The opening of the malls shouldn’t disrupt how people go about their daily lives,” he said.

Boz

Stats show 32% jump in last year; Ladner up 30% to $855,000

Border Collie Mix Breed, Black with White, Neutered Male Senior, (Approximately 9 years old) Meet 9 year old Boz who is our latest Tollie Fund recipient! This handsome 9 year old man came to the shelter with a pretty significant gash on his head that needed to be surgically treated. Unfortunately he wasn’t treated very well by his previous owner. His wounds are almost all healed now though and he is just waiting on some dental care to get him back to 100% health! He is almost ready for adoption! Boz is a REALLY lovely boy but obviously has a significant prey drive for small animals so we are aiming to place him in a home without other animals and someone who can throw the ball for him in a safe and enclosed yard. We think he would do great in a home with children over the age of 16 and he does need some leash experience but we are working on that at the shelter… Honestly - other than not liking other animals he is a REALLY lovely guy! He has lived a hard life and we hope to find him a home that will spoil him! He deserves no less!!!

Tsawwassen has broken through the $1 million level. According to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s statistics for December 2015, released earlier this week, the “benchmark” price for a typical detached single-family home in Tsawwassen has reached $1,021,300, an almost three per cent increase from the previous month. More startling is that the benchmark for a Tsawwassen house is up 32.2 per cent from December 2014. Tsawwassen continued to have the highest oneyear percentage increase among all communities in the real estate association’s coverage area, which includes Vancouver and Richmond. The second highest increase was in Ladner, which saw the benchmark price for a single-family home go up almost four per cent from the previous month to $855,800, representing a 30 per cent increase from a year ago. Does the Virto V Replace Traditional Hearing Aids? Whether at work, during conversations in small groups or when watching television, one in six adults experience problems when it comes to accurate speech comprehension and hearing in everyday situations. Although background noise and music can impair communication with friends and family, two thirds of those affected still do not use any hearing aids. There are many reasons for this but for most people it’s that they are not convinced that hearing aids will significantly benefit them or it’s the unease they feel about attracting attention by wearing a visible hearing aid. This is why the Swiss manufacturer Phonak has developed a world first: Virto V. These hearing aids are manufactured using a modern 3D printing process that provides a custom-fit miniature hearing aid that disappears into the ear canal, making it almost invisible to others. Despite its small size, the latest and most advanced Phonak hearing technology is still contained in the casing.

For some clients, the smaller design of the Virto V hearing aids might possibly replace the more traditional behind-the-ear hearing aids, and like many of our other products, these hearing aids can easily connect wirelessly with TVs and smartphones,” explains Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of the Swiss manufacturer Phonak. See how the virtually invisible Virto V fits into your daily routine.

“Thanks to a new operating system, these new hearing aids can provide a virtual alternative for natural hearing, as experienced by people with normal hearing. Through intelligent control, the software can improve speech understanding, even in loud situations and by utilizing the 3D printing process, these hearing aids fit the natural anatomy of the ear as closely as possible making them truly a custom-fit solution.

Second attempt to rezone former squash club site

A public information meeting will be held later this month on a contentious application to redevelop the former home of a Boundary Bay squash club. Set for Tuesday, Jan. 19, the meeting will be an opportunity to hear about the plan to subdivide the waterfront property at 6788 Corbould Rd. to construct two single-family homes. The application requires several approvals, including an Official Community Plan amendment as well as rezoning from its current private recreation designation. It’s the second attempt by the owner to redevelop the site as an identical application last year was rejected by Delta council. The current building on

Board of Variance Volunteers Needed

The Corporation of Delta has established a Board of Variance made up of five (5) persons appointed by the Mayor and Council. The purpose of the Board, as defined by the Local Government Act, is to consider applications in matters related to the provisions of: • A bylaw respecting the siting, dimensions or size of a building or structure, or siting of a manufactured home in a manufactured home park; • A bylaw related to the protection of trees; • The prohibition of a structural alteration or addition to a non-conforming use or siting, and • A subdivision servicing requirement in an area zoned for agricultural or industrial use. The Board may order that a minor variance may be permitted, if the Board finds that undue hardship would be caused to the applicant if the provision were required. The Board of Variance meets on the third Wednesday of each month, at 1:00 pm, at the Delta Municipal Hall, 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent. Members are appointed for a three (3) year term and serve without remuneration. Reasonable and necessary expenses that arise directly out of the performance of their duties are reimbursed. If you are interested in being appointed to serve as a member of the Board of Variance please submit a brief resumé and covering letter, indicating why you would like to serve and any relevant knowledge and experience you may have.

South Delta Crime Beat

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

• Dec. 28, 11:30 a.m., 800-block of 50B Street: Complainant reported his license plates stolen from his vehicle parked in his driveway and replaced by other plates. Investigation by police recovered the complainant’s plates in Langley and the stolen replacement plates were added to the police database. • Dec. 28, 1:25 p.m., 8A Avenue: Report received from complainant that the unoccupied residence and outbuildings owned by his father for redevelopment had been entered and several items stolen. Copper pipe, wire and metal baseboard heaters stripped from the residence. Tools, including a power washer, were also stolen. Neighbour inquiries proved negative but they were asked to inform police of any suspicious activity around the residence. • Dec. 30, 12:38 p.m., 12th Avenue: Business

reported that after a customer had left a 32-inch television was found to be missing from the room. The customer was contacted and she indicated that some friends had been in the room and may have taken it. Police advised the suspect to facilitate the return of the television. The theft is still under investigation. • Dec. 30, 4:47 p.m., 500-block of Centennial Parkway: Complainant reported someone had broken into a shed at their residence. During neighbourhood inquires police located another residence where the lock had been broken off a shed in the front yard. Nothing appears to have been stolen. • Dec. 30, 8:36 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported she had left her bicycle unlocked behind her place of work. When she returned later in the day the bike was gone. The bike is described as a Giant Roam 2 commuterstyle bike with a light blue frame. A co-worker reported his bicycle was stolen from the same location a week prior. • Jan. 1, 9:52 a.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported he parked his vehicle behind a business and sometime overnight the front side window was smashed. Burns dinners are hot ticket WEDNESDAY, OPEN HOUSE JANUARY 13TH

Over 800 expected for evenings hosted by Delta Police Pipe Band One of the two nights is sold out and only a few tickets remain for the other Robbie Burns dinner being hosted by the Delta Police Pipe Band later this month. Set for the Sacred Heart Church Hall on Ladner’s Arthur Drive, the dinner to honour the late Scottish poet on Saturday, Jan. 23 is already sold out, but there

are still a limited number of tickets available for the Friday, Jan. 22 event. The dinners are the biggest fundraisers for the band, which in 2015 travelled to the Okanagan Military Tattoo in Vernon and also to the prestigious Netherlands Tattoo. The Delta Police Pipe Band was the only pipe band invited to this internation-

al show, which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Holland by Canadian forces. This year guests will be treated to a prime rib dinner, piping, highland dancing, singing, single malt whisky bar and, of course, the traditional Toast to the Haggis. Dancing to The Earthmen until the wee hours of the

morning always concludes the evening. It is one of the highlights of the social calendar in Delta and by selling over 800 tickets yearly it is considered the largest event of its kind in the entire world. Tickets are $60 per person and be purchased at Grapes 4 U at 4857 Elliott St., Ladner, or can be reserved at 604-940-9463.

Murphy’s Law

I

TED MURPHY

just opened my assessment notice and after doing the math, I’m staring at a 22 per cent increase over last year. Needless to say, I’ve set my hair on fire and spent the last half-hour alerting the neighbours to our impending tax doom. OK, so there’s no need to call the fire department — and it’s not due to the fact I can ill afford to lose any more hair — but rather because I’m not sold on the notion that my property tax bill will ascend to a level that will force me from my home. It will rise, I’m certain of that, but I’m not convinced doomsday is at hand. At this time last year I got an assessment notice that showed my property had dropped in value by almost 10 per cent. I wasn’t convinced that was completely accurate reflection of its value, but I wasn’t about to challenge B.C. Assessment’s handiwork so I could end up paying more taxes. Given I was on the favourable side of the ledger, I figured there would be some good news when the property tax bill arrived in the spring, and sure enough that was the case. I pay my property taxes in monthly installments so after the homeowner grant was signed and the dust had settled, I was a whopping $107 to the good. I don’t mean to minimize the windfall given it’s the equivalent to at least five nice dinners out with my wife, provided of course she doesn’t order the McFlurry for dessert, but since I’m typically in the black after the tax bill is deducted from what has accrued over the year, it didn’t turn out to be any monumental savings. So if my assessment goes down while others trend the other way and I’m not rewarded handsomely for it, I’m assuming that because my increase this year has outstripped the average I won’t be punished too badly. I suspect the $107 I left in the account last year will disappear, and I’m hoping it will cover the increase brought about by the higher assessment. I won’t know for sure until the tax bill arrives in May but in the meantime I’m holding off on the hysterics. I might utter the always-popular, “I won’t be able to afford to live here if my assessment keeps rising like this,” just to see how it rolls off the tongue, but I’ll save the pyrotechnics for a later date.

Strategy needed to help take pressure off housing prices

B

est wishes to all for a happy and successful 2016! And, best of luck to those who are looking to purchase a single detached home in Metro Vancouver this year. As you have probably heard, or perhaps have seen in a notice from your very own mailbox, detached home prices are skyrocketing. South Delta is one of the hottest markets right now and limited supply is pushing prices even further north. The B.C. Real Estate Association is predicting 2016 will see a decline in housing sales but high demand will see housing prices continue to surge. We are glad that we chose Tsawwassen for our home 25 years ago and are not quite prepared to downsize yet. The lack of housing choice is a problem here right now, but with the Southlands and other developments on the horizon, there may be hope to stay in our community when we are ready to take advantage of home equity. With “benchmark” detached home pricing reaching the million-dollar mark in Tsawwassen, I am feeling sorry for young families and first-time buyers in this hyper market. You go where you can afford, I suppose, but at the same time I think that all levels of government and several agencies need to come up with a better strategy of dealing with broader land use scenarios.

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

I think we all want to preserve farmland for local food production, but at the same time, there are opportunities to look at lands in the ALR that are marginally farmable and consider them for rezoning opportunities up and down the lower Fraser Valley that could take some of the pressure off housing prices in Metro Vancouver. It is a complicated and emotional issue, but there has to be a way to compromise and balance the needs farmers - old and new food security and food sovereignty with a stable housing market. Perhaps Metro Vancouver, as was the case with the Southlands, could ensure that farming activity be incorporated into development applications. Each new community would have to include an element of food production in its design. It could be root crops and veggies, grazing pasture, orchard or greenhouse

operations, depending on the particular development site. Any development application without a regional food component would have to be refused. A look at ALR use would seem to indicate there is adequate land to consider this partnership and potential beneficial compromise. In 2010-2011, the Ministry of Agriculture took stock of land use in an ALR study: “The inventory reveals that 50 per cent of ALR land is farmed. Of the remaining ALR land that is not farmed, 25 per cent is available and has potential for farming because it is not impacted by significant physical constraints or built areas. The remaining 25 per cent is unavailable to agriculture because of existing incompatible non-farm uses (residential, parks), site conditions (topography, flooding) or cannot be farmed (roads).” Additionally, the report noted: “Agricultural land speculation exists, but to what extent is difficult to determine. The data reveals that 3,848 ha (9,508 acres) of ALR land has no apparent use.” There is a lot to stickhandle through on these thorny issues, but with Metro’s population pegged to grow significantly, some cooperation and major political will needs to happen, and soon. Port looks at Delta as prime picking

Editor: Re: Port committee would love to hear from you, Dec. 31 It is heartening to read all the “benefits” that Port Metro Vancouver has enacted. I’m sure the habitat banking program has been beneficial to the workers involved, perhaps not so much to the wildlife that has suffered loss of habitat and disruption. Dredging may allow a deeper draft for boaters, but does it damage the balance of fresh and saline water in our sloughs and waterways, and cause problems for fish and the ecosystem? How much dredging will be required for the new bridge?

Port Metro Vancouver has frequently indicated that gaining access to industrial land is crucial to the development of its infrastructure, business proposals and to enhance the viability of trade within Delta. It seems it has a voracious appetite for ALR land that is disappearing at an alarming rate, with no real outcry or challenge from the municipality. With food prices steadily rising for vegetables, fruits and grains, wouldn’t it be nice if some of the best growing soil in the country could be put to better use than a parking lot or rail sidings? It seems that Delta is prime pickings for those

wishing to turn us into yet another industrial area that denies its citizens the opportunity of benefitting from less invasive practices more suited to a rural community that values the efforts of generations of fishers, farmers, agriculturists and horticulturists. Yes, productivity is good, and business must thrive, but there also needs to be a balance of needs, both of the economy and the ecosystem. We lose land at our peril, we have fought for more sustainable logging and fishing practices, we have seen the devastation in other parts of our country and the world when we refuse to take account of

the wider needs of those who choose to live in an area that values a sustainable balance. Our federal government has signed a historic agreement to reduce global warming. I do not see Port Metro Vancouver’s headlong rush to embrace all things industrial as being a responsible stakeholder in this initiative, more like a rush to make the most amount of money for shareholders and companies both home and abroad with no accountability for the irreversible damage they will do to this unique part of B.C. that many of us value beyond materialism. Support voiced for Qualtrough’s disabilities act

Editor: Re: Changing of the Guard, Dec. 31 The recent interview with Delta MP and Minister of Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough was interesting in revealing her support for a Canadians with Disabilities Act. As a recent recruit to the ranks of the paraplegic, I am just beginning to experience the obstacles we face in leading as normal a life as possible.

Danger lurks Editor: Re: Pedestrians not safe, letter to the editor, Dec. 18 I could not agree more with Kathryn Clark. I walk in Tsawwassen all the time and it’s very dangerous in crosswalks. Why are the police not ticketing people before there’s another tragedy? Lynda Nielsen

Medical issues aside, outside our homes we are faced with situations that are difficult and often insurmountable. Buildings that are inaccessible by wheelchair are a huge problem and prevent us from entering restaurants we formerly patronized. It is also often difficult to access business premises to conduct our affairs and even accommodation. This last example is a ridiculous anomaly in that a disabled person who

rents a property in a communal building is guaranteed access to that property. However, a disabled person who owns a property in a strata complex is not guaranteed access in the same manner as fellow owners. Established strata corporations are exempt from the accessibility provisions of building codes and human rights legislation. The fact strata buildings now being constructed are compelled to provide

access recognizes the need for accessibility exists and is being addressed. Legislation is required at federal and provincial levels to compel the currently exempt strata complexes to provide access because, as our new prime minister declares, “...it is 2016.” I wish Qualtrough all success in her ministry and her representation of Delta; particularly in her efforts on behalf of the disabled. Resolutions in-one-year-and-out-the-other

Editor: Hopeful New Year’s resolutions: Bah Humbug! Without fail, at the beginning of a new year, we set ourselves up for failure by the making of New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps one reason for the futility of New Year’s resolutions is that they are expressed in such general terms as to end

up in procrastination and ensuing personal disappointment at their nonaccomplishment. Commendable intentions such as losing weight, exercising, more family time, quitting smoking, etc. are the familiar stuff New Year’s resolutions are made of, only to be broken, leaving behind

a sense of misgiving and despondency. It’s been said that a New Year’s resolution is something that goes: In-oneyear-and-out-the-other. But Oscar Wilde maybe said it best: “Good resolutions are simply cheques that men draw on a bank where they have no account.” E.W. Bopp

Expanded recycling efforts divert waste from schools

A greatly expanded recycling program in all Delta schools has meant the school district is now diverting much of its waste from the landfill. At the start of the last school year the district initiated a big shift in the way waste is handled. Garbage cans were removed from classrooms and offices, replaced with central receptacles that require students and staff to sort their waste into cans and bottles, other recyclables, paper products, organics and other waste. In 2006, Metro Vancouver voted in favour of adopting a zero waste philosophy. In 2009, it launched the Zero Waste Challenge that outlined a

goal of 70 per cent waste diversion from landfills. As a result of the school district’s expanded recycling program, it has now nearly reached that target. Prior to the expanded recycling program, 87 per cent of waste collected from Delta schools went to the landfill, a figure that has now been reduced to just 31 per cent. The goal is to increase that number to as close to 100 per cent as possible.

It’s hard to believe that it is already 2016. I mean, where did 2015 go? As I get older, the years seem to pass more quickly, but at the start of each new year there is a chance for a new start. I think the reason people celebrate so hardily on New Year’s Eve is they hold great hope the next year will bring something new and wonderful into their lives. As a pastor, this ritual reminds me of new life that is provided by Jesus. All of us long for something better. All of us want our lives to make a difference. This is available through a relationship with the Son of God. In Ephesians 2:5, the Apostle Paul tells us that

tionship with Jesus offer a new beginning but also eternal life. When Paul uses the term “what Christ has done,” he is referring to the Lord’s sacrifice on the cross that served as payment for sin. Thus, through simple belief in him and repentance of sin, we can be saved from eternal separation from God and experience a new and exciting life that lasts forever! The rituals that surround the end of one year and the beginning of another give us hope there is something exciting around the corner. Thankfully, God has offered us hope for a new beginning that comes through an eternal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Ladner author and illustrator Ashely Spires has a new children’s book out. The moral of the story in Over-Scheduled Andrew is one she needs to learn herself, Spires explains. “Everyone takes on too much these days, including children,” she told the Optimist. “Whether it’s rushing from school, to lessons, to sports events, or what have you, it seems that everyone is too busy these days. I’ve heard from a lot of schools that I visit that they are teaching ‘life balance’ to elementary students. This book is about that, figuring out how to pursue the things you love while still leaving room for downtime.” Spires has also illustrated another kids’ book — Spare Dog Parts — due for release later this month. She’s worked digitally for

her last three books and says it was wonderful to get back to watercolour painting again for Alison Hughes’ story. She is working to organize a local book release event. Spires, who received a nomination for last year’s B.C. Book Prize, has won numerous awards for her work, including Ontario’s Silver Birch Express, Atlantic Canada’s Hackmatack, Saskatchewan’s Shining Willow and B.C.’s Chocolate Lily Award. Her work includes the Binky the Space Cat series of graphic novels. Check out Spires’ website at www.ashleyspires. com.

id you make a resolution to start eating better and exercising so you can lose some inches off the ol’ body this year? If you did, you are not alone. The Journal of Clinical Psychology claims that losing weight is the number one resolution made by people every Jan. 1. However, sadly only eight per cent of us actually succeed in achieving that resolution. For the other 92 per cent of us, it’s another year of broken promises to our-

selves. This is dangerous too. Not succeeding in a task we set for ourselves can lead to feelings of disappointment, low selfesteem, failure and, eventually, defeat. Once we feel defeated it’s hard to want to make any change in our lives — even if we need to. So, what makes those eight per cent special, the ones that succeed with their weight loss goals? Well, first they start with small steps and they focus on building a powerful foundation. They view their weight loss as a measure of good health and well-being, not as a means to an end. I know it’s not sexy, and this small steps idea is not going to produce instantaneous results. It will, however, produce healthy habits for life as well as slow and steady change to the body. Successful people also have a plan when they start a new goal or resolu-

They start with a specific goal in mind (example, lose 10 pounds in one month), and from there they work backwards to create a plan, or a list of small, attainable steps that will help them achieve that goal. A plan is crucial. It will help you navigate the twisty roads of weight loss. In your plan I suggest adding when and where you are going to exercise.

With the sale of 22 original paintings at their pre-Christmas Gallery 1710 show, South Delta Artists Guild members celebrated a highly successful 2015, including their 40th anniversary, then immediately set to work between Christmas and New Year to initiate more creative magic in 2016. As a result, a volunteer, pizza-fuelled crew began refurbishing the guild’s vital and always busy studio/workshop, which houses daily drop-in groups, various workshop programs and also collects the dozens of paintings destined for show at several local facilities, including Delta Hospital. Appropriately, New Beginnings is the first guild show of 2016, hanging now at Gallery 1710 through Jan. 24. One of the most vital qualities of the guild’s art is the great variety of style, technique and

Passion for powder draws world to Whistler JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

The mountaintop breeze brushes my face and bites through my woolen toque yet, in spite of the wind-chill factor, I feel warmed by the adrenaline that rushes through my veins. This thermal adjustment could be due to Mother Nature and the effect that her surrounding beauty has on me. Or it might be triggered by the anticipation I feel just before launching off on my downhill journey. It’s hard to say, but this magical phenomenon happens every time I escalate to any of the mile-high pinnacles that hover over the resort town of Whistler. Aptly named, Seventh Heaven is the first of many scenic perches that I revel from during my visit to this favourite North American playground. Jagged powder peaks embrace her divine summit and on this crisp, clear day, they contrast vividly with cobalt blue skies. From my panoramic

Whistler Village offers skiers accommodations, shopping and nightlife. Blackcomb lookout I also have vistas of her neighbouring sister, Whistler Mountain, where similar paradise pathways also attract die-hard skiers and snowboarders. Together, the compatible couple renders over 8,000 ski-able acres, including 16 magnificent bowls, three scenic glaciers and over 200 marked runs. While some go in search of perilous fall lines and powder that’s as light as goose down, the less adventuresome have the

choice of classic cruisers and wide open groomers. They funnel down to the quaint alpine village far below where lights decorate frosted evergreens and the pedestrian hub bustles with activity. Flanking the village’s interconnecting pathways are over 200 stores. Being a Vancouverite, I’d had the privilege of skiing these slopes as a youngster, and watching Whistler evolve over the past four decades from what was once the town

dump to the international acclaimed resort that it is today. But Whistler’s roots extend a lot further back than mine do. Early settlers first trekked the three-day journey to the shores of nearby Alta Lake, and in 1911 Alex and Myrtle Philip followed their dream after purchasing four hectares for $700. Their remote fishing resort, Rainbow Lodge, attracted enthusiasts to the isolated area. This remote destination reached its prime in the

PHOTO BY MIKE CRANE/ TOURISM WHISTLER

1940s, but outnumbered by other resort options the enthusiasm faded and it wasn’t until the 1960s the area became alive again. With a passion for powder and an insight into the big picture, a group of Vancouver businessmen developed what was then known as London Mountain into an alpine ski area in hopes of hosting the 1968 Olympics. Runs were carved into the hillside and in honour of the whistling hoary marmots that resided in rocky

outcroppings, the name Whistler was contrived. Although the Olympic bid failed, the evolution of Whistler did not. Slowly, but surely, T-bars were erected, chairlifts were established and aluminum gondolas whisked ski hounds, like myself, over an hour-long journey to Whistler’s sensational summit. Thirteen years later, the European style village evolved, Blackcomb united in a symbiotic relationship with Whistler, manicured golf courses snuggled up alongside five-star resorts and, in 2010, the Olympic Winter Games finally became a reality. Tips for staying safe in the garden this year Green Room

ANNE MARRISON

M

y credentials for advising on safety in the garden are, frankly, a little dodgy since I’ve had more garden accidents than most people. But that’s how I learned what actions are best avoided — and their consequences. It’s so important to wear safety glasses outside, but it took me two

scratched corneas to do so. Dangerous neighbourhoods for eyes include trees and shrubs that spring back in your face when you work on them and tough weeds that release violently and shower your face with earth. Face-height plant stakes are another nasty for unprotected eyes. Topping them with small jars looks ugly, pill and film containers blow away. Wine corks look great, but drilling the holes puts fingers at risk. Until the perfect solution emerges, glasses are safer. In the years I was clearing rocks to enlarge the vegetable garden, I had gardener’s back two or three times a year because I was determined to be a gardening hero.

The gardening hero any time of year on mossy works on after they get lawns, steps and walktired, focuses on one task ways. summer while gardening. Ideally this means longsleeved shirts to protect against sunburn and hats to shield heads. Gardeners close to forested areas might add tall rubber boots if they’re among trees and shrubs because ticks are out there attacking silently and painlessly. I didn’t know I was bitten until one fell out of my hair. Even relatively benign garden products need care. Lime sulphur and insecticidal soap are agonizing if they get into eyes. Mixing dusty fertilizers is a lung hazard unless you wear a mask or do the mixing outside while standing upwind. But most injuries are the small, everyday slivers and scratches that occasionally get infected. That’s

why wearing garden gloves can solve problems before they start. Unfortunately, many are stiff and clumsy. Thin leather gloves are thorn-proof and flexible but expensive. Alternatives include closely-woven fabric gloves such as Foxgloves that protect against all but large, determined thorns. One vital protection for gardeners is the tetanus shot, which should be boosted every 10 years. Medical attention for any deep puncture wound is also vital. Best wishes to you all for a safe New Year as well as a happy one. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. It helps me if you mention your city or region.

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment The British Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (Ministry) is proposing to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a new bridge, improve Highway 99 from Bridgeport Road in Richmond to Highway 91 in Delta, and replace interchanges at Westminster Highway, Steveston Highway and Highway 17A (proposed Project). The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Ministry must obtain an environmental assessment certificate before any work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. However, prior to submission of an application (Application) for an environmental assessment certificate by the Ministry, the Environmental Assessment Office of British Columbia (EAO) must first approve Application Information Requirements. Key to the Application Information Requirements is the identification of valued components to be studied and the areas within which the studies would occur. The selected valued components are presented in the Project Description and Key Areas of Study document that the Ministry has prepared, and EAO invites the public to submit comments on. In order to provide information about the valued components selection, EAO invites the public to attend two Open Houses: Sandman Signature Hotel Vancouver Airport – Round Room 10251 St. Edwards Drive, Richmond, BC Tuesday January 26, 2016 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Delta Town and Country – Ballroom 6005 Highway 17A (at Highway 99), Delta, BC Wednesday January 27, 2016 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There are 31 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the Project Description and Key Areas of Study document. The comment period will begin on January 15, 2016, and end on February 15, 2016.

All comments received during this comment period in relation to the Project Description and Key Areas of Study document will be considered. The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. At this stage of the process, the primary intent is to receive feedback about the studies or information required for a comprehensive environmental assessment. EAO accepts public comments through the following ways: • By Online Form at: http://www.eao.gov.bc.ca/pcp/index.html • By Mail: Michael Shepard Project Assessment Manager Environmental Assessment Office PO Box 9426 Stn Prov Govt Victoria BC V8W 9V1 • By Fax: Fax: 250 387-0230 An electronic copy of the Project Description and Key Areas of Study document and information regarding the environmental assessment process are available at www.eao.gov.bc.ca. Copies of the Project Description and Key Areas of Study will also be available for viewing at: All Municipal Libraries in the City of Richmond All Municipal Libraries in the Corporation of Delta If you are unable to participate at this time, there will be an additional comment period during the Application Review stage when you will also be able to provide comments to EAO on the proposed Project.

NOTE: All submissions received by EAO during the comment period in relation to the proposed Project are considered public and will be posted to the EAO web site.

Both will take place in the east gym at DSS and be led by former national team standout Joey Vickery — considered one of this country’s greatest ever pure shooters. Pacer grad and current junior boys coach Donavon Britten has been busy contacting and distributing information flyers to all Ladner elementary schools. The whole idea is to introduce the game to potential players in the

years ahead. “This is more about basketball awareness than it is skill development,” explained DPBA executive member Dean Bauck. “We have been fund raising for eight years so

lets start to spend it. We do have a budget, we are prepared to spend it and this is the type of thing we want to spend it on where we are giving back to the community.” Navi Sekhon added getting Vickery to lead the camps is a significant boon for the association. “Parents need to realize (at elementary age) their kids will not see this type of coaching for a long time, maybe their entire career,” explained the former star for the ’93 Pacers team. “Joey has been there and done it all. His basketball knowledge is second to none.” The elementary camp is part of a busy stretch for the DPBA that will conclude with the 27th annual Pacer Alumni Tournament at the end of the month. The DPBA will also be hosting its first-ever Alumni Night next Friday (Jan. 15) for a scheduled doubleheader featuring the senior girls and boys teams, starting at 6 p.m. Past players are encouraged to take in the games then join former teammates, along with parents and current players, for a

social in the gym loft. “This is something we want to do every year and get (the alumni) use to it,” added Bauck. “We really want the parents and players there too. The whole idea is to create a bridge between the families and the association.” The DPBA has also been active in providing coaching for all six teams at DSS this season. At least one DSS alumni is involved with every one of them as a head or an assistant coach including Rachel Bock (senior girls), Ryan Cowley (junior girls), Jessie Lynes (Grade 8 girls), Kenny Ryan (Grade 8 boys and senior boys) and Britten. At the buzzer... Anyone without a form and wanting to register their daughter or son for the elementary camp should email deltapacers@gmail. com. The annual Stebbings/Murray Cup rivalry game between the Pacers and South Delta takes place on Wednesday in Ladner at 7:30 p.m. DSS will be heavily favoured to add its fifth straight title.

COX, Clifford Garnet December 16, 1929 - December 19, 2015 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving husband, father & grandfather. Born to William & Evelyn Cox in The Pas Manitoba, Cliff lived in The Pas & worked for the CNR as a brakeman. In 1953 he went to Uranium City as a uranium prospector/assayer until joining the RCAF in 1954 as a radio tech. While stationed in France he met his future wife Sheila. They moved to Ottawa where their daughter was born & a year later while stationed in Germany, their son arrived. On their return to Canada in 1966, they lived in Vancouver & Richmond. After his retirement from the RCAF in 1973, the family toured Europe for a year in a camper. He then joined CP Air as an avionics tech. They moved to White Rock and finally to Ladner. Cliff & Sheila covered many miles in their RV & enjoyed cruising & exotic trips. Cliff was a kind, caring man with a quiet sense of humour, who was loved & respected by all who knew him. Cliff is survived by wife Sheila, daughter Kerri (Greg), son Rob (Ruth) & grandchildren Connor, Taylor, Catrionagh & Liam as well as his three sisters & many nieces & nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers. Our grateful thanks to the caring staff of Delta Hospital, Augustine House, Mountain View Manor & especially to Dr Kordic. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

HINDE, William Francis (Bill) August 31, 1919 December 29, 2015

Dear Dad, Grampa, GreatGramps and Great-GreatGramps, passed away peacefully at Mt View Manor. He leaves his loving wife, Audrey of 74 wonderful, happy years and in his words “She was my first love and I married her,” also his daughter Penny Thorbeck (Marty deceased), son Bill (Janis), grandchildren Scott, Jenny (Brian), Warren (Carley), Cindy (Connie), great-grandchildren Kristy (Raynar), Candice (Ryan), Katey (Soonbum), Matthew, Madison and McKenzie as well as two great-great-grandsons Levi and Fischer. Bill married Audrey August 2, 1941, while in the RCAF. They settled in the family home in Richmond after the war, where gardening was a passion. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Audrey and Bill left their family home to make a new one in Ladner, later to a townhouse, then to Augustine House.

Born September 30, 1927 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Mom passed peacefully at KinVillage Care Home January 1, 2016 in her 89th year. Survived by her children; Yvonne (David), Linda Doug), Andy (Teri), predeceased by her son, Martin. Beloved Oma of Rebecca (Richard), Teresa (Robbie), Nicole (Simon), Alex and Morgan. Granny to great-grandchildren Logan and Lily. She will be remembered by many friends and relatives in Canada and the Netherlands. Lynn was predeceased by her former husband, Teunis in 2003. Mom lived in Richmond from 1963 until her move to Ladner in 1994. She moved to Tsawwassen in 2010 to KinVillage – Assisted Living and later to the Care Home. Mom was a beautiful woman with an infectious smile. She had a sense of humor that could light up a room. Lynn’s passions were her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was for many years involved with the Science of Mind Church in Vancouver. Her past hobbies included square dancing, 5 pin bowling, knitting – including very beautiful Cowichan - style sweaters and playing the organ. In addition to being an excellent homemaker, she was at one time a crossing guard at both Blundell and Cook schools. Mom proudly became a Canadian Citizen in 1977. We wish to thank Dr. Long and the staff at KinVillage - Assisted Living and KinVillage Care Home for their attention and care to our Mom, Oma and Granny. In lieu of flowers and in memory of Mom, donations to Variety - The Children’s Charity in BC http://www.variety.bc.ca or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. The family asks that you share your condolences and stories online at www.deltafuneral.ca . There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2 – 4 pm. at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

CELEBRATION ENGAGEMENTS

Bill was a loving, caring man whose life was centered around family, who enjoyed all the fruits of Mum and Dad’s labor in the garden. Bill retired from Woodward’s meat department after 40 years of dedicated service. He will be remembered by many children as “Uncle Bill, the wiener man” as he gave away many to keep children happy. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to our Delta Hospital www.dhfoundation.ca and so many thanks to all our Angels at Mt View Manor. Family Service to follow. Our love always ~ Your Family Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
