Delta MP Carla Qualtrough waits to address the Delta Chamber of Commerce.
She’s going to do things differently. That was the message delivered by Delta MP Carla Qualtrough to a receptive audience at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s monthly luncheon at the Delta Town & Country Inn
Wednesday. Elected by a wide margin last fall, the minister of sport and persons with disabilities spoke about priorities for the new Liberal government as well as her mandate to promote sport and recreation, and to ensure greater accessibility and opportunities for Canadians with disabilities.
“I do truly believe everything I’ve done in my life has led me to this job,” Qualtrough proclaimed. The MP for the reconfigured riding that encompasses both North Delta and South Delta said she intends to do things differently, adding her government is embarking on what she described as a transformative
agenda. Qualtrough promised more openness and accessibility as well as being open-minded to new ideas and persuasion, although she added she’s not going to be a pushover either. She said there will be real teamwork to represent the priorities of Delta. QUALTROUGH: see Page 3

Secretive organization hosting rare public presentation in Ladner next week SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The public will have a rare opportunity to enter one of the private halls of the Freemasons next week. Tsawwassen Lodge No. 195, in association with Melrose Lodge No. 67, will have a free information session at its Delta hall to let people know more about the fraternal organization known as Freemasonry. It’s aimed at letting people know what they’re all about as well as dispelling some of the myths and conspiracy theories. The Freemasons are the oldest and most widely known fraternal organization in the world, reportedly with origins from the stonemasons’ guilds during the Middle Ages. The language and symbols used in the fraternity’s rituals come from that era. Freemasonry has since developed into a worldwide fraternity emphasizing personal study, selfimprovement and social betterment via individual

Freemasons are inviting the public, and prospective members, to a presentation next Wednesday at its hall on Delta Street in Ladner Village. involvement and philanthropy. “There’s actually quite a bit of interesting history and there’s all kinds of artifacts and times of history, poems and things like this, to try to understand where this all came from,” said Delta resident Greg Nicholls, past worshipful master of Tsawwassen Lodge No. 185 A.F. & A.M. (Ancient Free and
Accepted Masons). “And, of course, there’s all kinds of that conspiracy stuff that goes along with it. “There’s really no wrong questions to ask and we’ve got nothing to hide,” Nicholls said. As far as Freemasonry being often referred to as a secret society, the organization notes any social group or private business is “secret” in that its busi-
ness meetings might be open only to its members. In Freemasonry, the process of joining is also a private matter. Its members are pledged not to discuss with non-members certain parts of the ceremonies associated with the organization. “What we tend not to do and why this conspiracy belief seems to carry on is that we’re not out there
to get into argument or debate with anyone. It’s not worth having that type of debate and it’s sort of an unspoken rule to not get into an argument nobody is going to win,” Nicholls noted. Freemasons are a worldwide organization and have contributed to the fabric of Delta for longer than the municipality has even been incorporated, Nicholls said. “We also have some really cool artifacts and representative of the people who were in that room were leaders and creators of our community.” The presentation, Origin of Freemasonry: Myths, Theories, and History, by W. Bro. Jonathan Silveira, takes place Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at 4873 Delta St., Ladner. The Freemasons will be in their full attire and the dress code for everyone else, including prospects, is regular business attire. Lois Jackson, Delta’s two MLAs, farmers and others, and she’ll soon be meeting with Tsawwassen First Nation leadership. She added it will be “extremely beneficial” for Delta to have a cabinet minister who will continue to keep the profile raised for the community, having already had discussions with her fellow cabinet ministers regarding the importance of Delta to the national economy.
In his introduction of Qualtrough, John Furlong, Own the Podium board chairman and former CEO of the Vancouver Olympics, said she brings experience and credibility to the ministerial position and will be a champion for sport in Canada. Qualtrough promised sport advocates to make the complex system easier to navigate and to try to upgrade and revitalize recreation infrastructure.

When later asked about the possibility of a multipurpose sport facility in Delta, she answered “maybe” and that there is a need for more such facilities across the country. She said Delta has some phenomenal facilities but lacks support infrastructure, including accommodations, to hold sporting events, so they need to find creative solutions. Noting it’s clear Qualtrough brings passion
to the job and for Delta, Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester, in a wrap-up speech, said he was looking forward to working with the MP. During the questionand-answer portion, Qualtrough said Delta is pivotal to Canada’s trade and “if Delta shuts down there is no gateway.” She added that in some ways, “Delta is doing more than its share.”

invasive plant species will be effectively managed, is required before the application can proceed any further at the federal level. It means the “regulatory clock” has stopped until the port submits the information and the agency believes a panel would have all the necessary information for a comprehensive review of the three-berth container terminal proposal. The federal environment minister won’t appoint a review panel until the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is satisfied. There’s no timeline on when the additional information must or will be submitted. The project is subject to an independent review panel, under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, but will also undergo an assessment under the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act. It also requires other permits and authorizations. The port had estimated construction of the project

The proposed Terminal 2 would be a second threeberth container terminal at Roberts Bank. would commence sometime in 2018 and would take approximately five years to complete. Last spring, it submitted a comprehensive environmental document for T2, which was to trigger a lengthy review process. The environmental impact statement summarizes the results of dozens of studies and the port notes its research involved the assessment of potential environmental, economic, social, heritage and health effects of the project, including cumulative effects. Last summer, the agency asked the port authority for additional information before the review could proceed, effectively stopping the clock until
it deemed the document complete. That information was submitted in late October, but the port has now seen the clock stop a second time. As far as some of the local input already received, the Delta Farmers’ Institute last summer commented that if T2 was to proceed, agricultural lands would be under further pressure and as much as 600 hectares would be earmarked for port-related development. The DFI has asked for the environmental assessment to include impacts to agricultural lands. Politicians, citizen groups and environmental organizations have also conveyed concerns or opposition.

Lansdowne named Extreme Huntress
International competition for female hunters JESSICA KERR
j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Long-time Ladner resident Shannon Lansdowne beat out five other competitors earlier this month to be named winner of the 2016 Extreme Huntress Competition. Lansdowne, who grew up in Ladner but moved to Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island in 2013, was back in Texas for the awards gala. She was on stage in front of 1,300 people with her five fellow competitors, many of whom have become good friends, when her name was called. “I was shocked,” she said, adding she managed to pull a speech together and say a few words to the crowd. “It feels great. It’s fantastic,” she said. “It’s an honour to receive a trophy like that and being recognized by my fellow hunters.” Lansdowne had to make it through several stages
of the contest to reach the stage in Dallas. This is the sixth year for the international competition that aims to create positive role models for women who want to participate in hunting. To enter the contest, each woman had to submit an essay describing why she is an extreme huntress. A panel of judges considered all the submissions and chose 20 to move on to the semifinals. Lansdowne made the cut and then made it to the finals based on a combination of judges’ scores and online voting. She was one of two B.C. women who made it to the finals. The other four finalists all hail from the U.S. Last July, the six finalists traveled to the famed 777 Ranch in Texas where they spent an intense week competing in a series of challenges. Everything was filmed and then aired on the Extreme Huntress website over 13 weeks.
Following each episode, viewers were able to vote for their favourite competitor. Going into the awards gala, the competitors knew the results of the public voting and the skills competition, which combined accounted for 60 per cent of their final scores, with the judges’ scores making up the final 40 per cent. Lansdowne said she felt good going into the gala. She had placed fourth in online voting with 12,000 votes and knew she had come in first in the skills competition. Lansdowne was introduced to hunting at an early age. Her father was an outfitter and owned hunting territory on the province’s central coast where he would guide clients on hunts. She followed in his footsteps and worked for a time as a hunting guide. She said she would like to parlay her win into promoting the industry.

ou’ve got to think it’s only a matter of time before the school closure discussions taking place in Vancouver and Richmond make their way out here. The Vancouver school board is scheduled to debate a staff report next week that considers closing more than a dozen schools, while trustees in Richmond held series of open houses last fall as they too mull possible school closures. Roughly three-quarters of Richmond’s schools are under-utilized, according to Ministry of Education guidelines, which isn’t terribly surprising in a district that graduated 2,200 high school students last June but only welcomed about 1,400 kindergarten students in September. Vancouver’s 110 public schools have a capacity for another 9,000 students and 40 of its schools are less than 75 per cent full. There are all kinds of factors for this situation, but the high cost of housing, so rich it’s out of reach for a great many families with school-aged children, is the primary culprit. Both cities have grown significantly in recent times, but the cost of housing has changed the demographics, leaving empty desks in its wake. Delta schools saw a steady enrollment decline since a high water mark in the early 1980s, a trend that has leveled off as of late, but I’ve got to wonder whether we’re going to see that downward spiral begin again thanks to a red hot real estate market. With the price of a typical Tsawwassen home now exceeding $1 million, and Ladner not too far behind, housing in this once family-friendly slice of suburbia is simply too steep. The impacts won’t be felt immediately as those that got in before the jump will continue to populate schools, but as homeowners cash out, their replacements will be less likely to arrive with kids in tow. This situation will be exacerbated by our lack of affordable options to costly single-family homes, although our one saving grace might be the trickle down effect. Those moving from pricier environs view South Delta as affordable, relatively speaking, so they could bring kids here when they relocate. The next generation of young families, however, won’t find prices to their liking and will most likely put down roots somewhere else.
Hard for paycheque to rise at same rate as housing values

f you own property in B.C. you have received some welcome news in the mail. The value of your property has increased dramatically. If you are renting, it may be a prelude to higher rents. Either way, are taxes or rent going to go up? Good question and not a lot of clear explanation to date. First, the municipal tax base is made up of three communities — North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen. Second, the Delta budget will likely go up about two to four per cent along with additional increased fixed charges for garbage, water, recycling and transit. Delta council members tell us those last charges are “not controllable” by them. Nonetheless, they have been increasing well above the inflation rate for some time. The overall assessment increase for all of Delta is about 13 per cent. That means if your property value increased 13 per cent, you might expect an increase in property taxes of two to four per cent. If your assessment increased more, then you will pay more. South Delta will bear a larger portion of the Delta tax load because our assessments have
Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON
jumped more than in North Delta, where the increase was only 12 per cent. Looking at South Delta, assessments increased 17 per cent, so if Delta’s budget goes up about three per cent, our taxes will have a higher increase. Looking even closer, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver reports a year over year increase of 30 per cent in Ladner and 32 per cent in Tsawwassen. Those prices give a sense of what to expect next year — more increases are coming. If you are living in your primary residence, and if a senior, there are reductions in your taxes to factor in. Though these deductions lower the amount you pay, the percentage increase will be higher as those concessions are a
fixed amount — they don’t rise as your property value rises. Is it good if your property value goes up say 20 per cent? If your property is valued at say $700,000 and it increases 20 per cent, you have made — on paper — $140,000. If it’s your primary residence, that increase is tax free. Just how much did you make last year from all that sweat, effort and anxiety? Look around and you’ll find most property owners made much more on their property than on all the effort at employment. Will this last? Canadian house prices rose on average 12 per cent last year. Regionally, the pressure for homes in Metro Vancouver is severe. We are also the recipients of offshore money looking for a safe place to invest, and that money does not get scared by our house prices. Locally, in South Delta, the combination of the TFN super malls and the past discounted value on local houses suggest we are in for some years of substantially increased prices. If you own, then great. If you rent, perhaps consider the alternatives. Ian Robertson is long-time resident of, and commentator on, South Delta.

Port expansion better handled in Prince Rupert than Roberts Bank
Editor: I am writing to make some comments and suggestions about Port Metro Vancouver’s controversial proposal for a second container terminal at Roberts Bank in the heart of the Fraser River Estuary. Hopefully you have all become aware of the weak business case and of the environmental risk to the estuary and the Fraser River this project poses. Other negative factors include increased air, noise and light pollution, industrial development pressures on hundreds of acres of farmland, and a negative impact on our salmon fishery, shellfish fishery, southern resident killer whale population, globally significant bird habitat and other wildlife species. Obviously there are lots of risks on a project of this magnitude at this location. One might ask why Port Metro Vancouver is fast tracking its efforts
to proceed with inflated projections. The only reasons I can think of are as follows: 1. To expand the scope and size of the empire named Port Metro Vancouver. 2. To provide big economic benefits to a few so-called stakeholders and to others such as local farmers that stand to gain from selling off agricultural land, land developers, land speculators and others that may gain at the expense of our environment and communities. Of course, if port expansion is necessary, in years to come, it should first go to the Port of Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert has both logistical and environmental advantages over Roberts Bank. I would assume Port Metro Vancouver does not like to recognize the importance of Prince Rupert in the scheme of things because it is outside of its jurisdiction and is in
effect competition. May I suggest it is now time to redefine the mandate of Port Metro Vancouver. Perhaps it needs a different board of directors that has a balanced make up of independent citizens, municipal councillors as well as marine transport, engineering and logistics experts. It is also time for Transport Canada to take a more active role to facilitate accountability at Port Metro Vancouver. If that means making changes to the Canadian Marine Act, then so be it. Yes, the existing CEO and possibly several senior managers might have to be replaced. May I suggest it is time to put an end to little or no accountability, the abuse of power, extravagant compensation and cronyism that exists between management and the current board of directors? Canada needs a port authority to manage our
ports and to ensure we provide sufficient capacity for current container import/export business as well as for forecasted growth, going forward for the next 20 years. Statistics prove current and pending container port expansions for Canada’s West Coast provides ample capacity without the Roberts Bank Terminal 2. Port Metro Vancouver management and board refuse to recognize this and continue to mislead the public in this regard. This has to stop. It is up to our elected representatives to reestablish the port’s mandate and make the necessary changes to ensure we get back to reality and in so doing, save the estuary and the river from this unnecessary development. I hope you all agree that we need to try hard to preserve the Fraser River, its wildlife and natural resources for generation to come. Don Paulsen
Municipal politicians not upholding Delta’s motto Editor: Re: Change at hand, Murphy’s Law, Jan. 6 In the light of your recent editorial, the Corporation of Delta’s motto, Ours to preserve by hand and heart, comes across as either cynical or merely goofy. Our council knew of the
enormous Tsawwassen First Nation residential and commercial developments before it approved the Southlands development, yet it approved it anyway. Quite apart from years of incessant construction traffic, the Southlands transportation study
(Appendix C) predicts that, with the Southlands development in place, “volume exceeds capacity, queue is theoretically infinite” along 56th Street twice a day. Additionally, we can expect more elderly people being knocked down and killed as streets are
widened (at our expense) and traffic intensity increases. Against this background, the plan to gut Tsawwassen town centre and replace it with condos, including a high rise, is singularly ill-conceived. Ours to preserve by hand and heart. Really? Tom Morrison
Snub certainly out of character for country that’s always been there Editor: I wonder if our Liberal MP might be able to explain to Deltans why Canada was snubbed by the American-led multi-
country coalition that opposes ISIL when it has been Canada’s honesty and steadfast loyalty to its allies that has stood it in good stead for more than
100 years on the international front. Now, thanks to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the governing Liberals, Canada and
Canadians have been slapped in the face, hard, and no amount of phony excuses by the defence minister can change that. S.M. Cruickshank

Counts show change in eagle numbers Population has been steadily rising since 1980s
By the Bay ANNE MURRAY
Huge numbers of bald eagles congregate in Delta for the winter. Some gather on the tidal marshes around Boundary Bay, feeding on the tens of thousands of ducks and
shorebirds that use the bay as a wintering area. Other eagles prefer the easy pickings at the Vancouver Landfill at Burns Bog or the compost heaps and farm fields along 72nd Street. The Christmas Bird Count held each year at the end of December regularly records between 600 and 1,300 bald eagles within a 24-kilometre radius of Ladner. Yet, as long-time residents will remember, there was a time when there were very few eagles in the Fraser delta. Their numbers have steadily risen over the last
four decades. Bird count data (viewable on the Audubon. org website) reveal that on average between 1958 and 1974 fewer than three eagles were observed on the single day, mid-winter count. Today, it is a common occurrence to see a dozen or more adult and juvenile eagles perched in a single tree. The local population shift began in the 1980s when average count numbers first rose to 76, then increased through the 1990s to 234. Since 2006, the average tally on the Christmas Bird Count has

Breeding numbers have also increased dramatically, and there are now 400 to 500 nesting pairs in the lower Fraser Valley. Audubon and Bird Studies Canada partner in organizing the Christmas Bird Count, which began in 1900. The information gathered by thousands of volunteer birdwatchers is very valuable in learning about North American birds. While a single year’s data can be misleading, collectively the surveys can demonstrate population trends, such as the increases in Delta’s

bald eagles and Anna’s hummingbirds (now a common garden bird, yet only observed on our local count since the mid-1980s). Some other bird populations have declined. The Ladner count is often first in Canada for highest numbers of birds, with typically 140 to 152 different species, but in 2015 only 134 species were seen, with the cold, wet weather being a factor. Other eagle counts are conducted at salmon spawning sites. Last fall, 1,400 bald eagles were recorded on the Chehalis River during the Fraser
Valley Bald Eagle Festival. In contrast, at Brackendale on the Squamish River, only 411 eagles were counted this January, compared with over 3,700 eagles back in 1994. There are many complexities to the population dynamics of these majestic birds. our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. (Hebrews 1:1–3, NIV) God intervened in humanity, not only by becoming one of us, but by paying the penalty for our sins. He really does act on behalf of those who put their trust in him. What has God done for you lately? How would you respond to that? Some would answer, “Not much.” Others could point to many instances where God has worked in their life. Some might feel that to even ask that question borders on heresy, because it sounds so selfabsorbed. Do we expect God to be actively involved in our lives? Do we recognize it when he does? The prophet Isaiah said a fascinating thing in a prayer to God: “Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him (Isaiah 64:4, NIV).” What an incredible thought: God

elanie Ellis is as upbeat as they come. She’s lively and she’s bouncy and she’s hyper enough that she veritably vibrates when discussing one of her passions. She’s good with people too, putting them instantly at ease, but she’s even better with her greatest passion of all — a certain domesticated animal that happens to share virtually every one of her key personality traits. Hint: woof, woof. Ellis, you see, is just about the best friend a dog could have. That she’s also a certified dog trainer — at least when she’s not busy with her day job at the Delta Community Animal Shelter — only makes sense. So it was fitting she was at the helm Monday night as the shelter hosted its second annual Introduction to Dog Trick Training class. It was the first in a series of absolutely free canine-centric sessions the shelter will offer in 2016, and it was a heck of a lot of fun.
It was also eye-opening. Turns out dogs are smarter and far quicker on the uptake than most of us think. Even better, says Ellis, tricks are just the tip of the iceberg. With the right approach, they’ll eventually be better behaved pooches all around and, if asked, will happily do the bidding of their human overlords. Indeed, Ellis claims that through her reward-based, eye-contact approach, she’s taught her own dogs to do some mighty impressive stuff — like putting away toys, fetching soda pops and even helping to bring in the groceries. “Trick training is obedience in a way. You’re training your dog and making him smarter and able to listen better, but you’re also adding a fun aspect to it. “Commands like ‘leave it,’ which are usually used for treats on the paw or on the nose, can be used in other ways. Say you’re walking down the street and you see another dog. Your dog thinks, ‘oh my god, I have to see that other dog.’ But if you tell him to ‘leave it,’ the dog will think, ‘Oh, if I ignore that stimulus, and look up at you instead, I’ll get a

Jen Linde and dog Kora work through one of the evening’s exercises. treat.’” As the evening rolled on, it was plain to see some dogs were more comfy than others. Lynne McLoud’s Shih Tzu, for instance, cowered in the presence of so many of her peers. But even little Pearla came around, ultimately nailing her first trick in just a few minutes. It’s that kind of speed that so impressed Lara Paul. Sitting on the floor
with her Portuguese water dog, Bueller, Paul admitted, “I’m not very creative about thinking up commands, but being here I’ve already thought of a couple new things I can teach him. So far tonight we’ve got ‘bow’ and ‘roll over.’ He got it (bowing) right away. He did it much quicker with this instructor than he’s ever done with me.” Across the room from Paul and Bueller were the Lindes — dad David,
daughter Jen and furry BFF Kora. Said David, “We came here tonight to work on some basic obedience. She tends to jump a lot so we wanted to see if we could work on that. She’s only eight months old and this is really her first formal class. It’s been great so far.” For more information or to register for future classes, call the Delta Community Animal Shelter at 604-940-7111.

A week of art-based fun and entertainment begins Monday at the South Delta Artists Guild’s Gallery 1710, put together by wellknown guild members Rod Winning and the artist who signs himself SLN 149. For this event, Gallery 1710 will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Sunday, Jan. 31, showing new work, large and small, by these inventive visual artists, on hand to welcome their visitors. The show is open to all,

Invitations have been extended to seniors from Augustine House, Delta Community Living Society, The Waterford, Abbeyfield House and KinVillage to attend a Tea and Art event on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. Throughout the week there will be free art draws, and the opening reception with a surprise local band will be held on Thursday,
Jan. 28 from 7 to 11 p.m. Children are not forgotten as they are invited to dress in their old clothes and enjoy a possibly messy painting session on Saturday, Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All supplies needed will be provided and the results could lead to an exhibition of their work in the gallery’s workshop, with awards given, as happened in 2015. Gallery 1710 is at 171056th St., Tsawwassen, adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre. For more information, call 604-724-8234.

Over 40? Four exercises you need to be doing

t’s nice to work out muscles that make us look good, isn’t it? I mean, let’s be honest, a lot of us started working out purely due to vanity. Yes, feeling good, being fit and decreasing our chances for disease are all great and valid reasons to work out, but let’s not overlook the fact we also want some damn fine looking muscles as well. Common areas that we train to “look good” depend on gender. Men like to train the T-shirt muscles — the pecs, biceps and shoulders — while women prefer to train the booty muscles —

Comedians take stage in SDSS Dry Grad benefit
MENS’ & LADIES’ WEAR

Show set for next Friday night in Tsawwassen
South Delta Secondary will be full of laughs next Friday as the school becomes a comedy venue for a night. Hosted by local comedian Billy Mitchell, the comedy night will benefit the 2016 SDSS Dry Grad. Mitchell has brought in two special guest performers — comedian Daryl Brown and comedy magician Chris Yuill. “Both of our acts are award winners,” he said. Brown won last year’s Lafflines comedy competition. He is renowned for his open, freestyle and critical form of comedy. His material encompasses a wide range of social issues, including religion, politics and culture, and is often steeped in dark comedy. Yuill’s combination of magic and comedy has earned him invitations to perform at YukYuk’s Comedy Club for

its Vaudeville Comedy Revival and for the TV special Off the Wall. He won silver medals at the 2006 Pacific Coast Association of Magicians pro challenge and for close-up and stage magic in 2010. He also won the Tony Eng close up award in 2011. “He’s amazing,” Mitchell said, adding Yuill works a lot of audience interaction into his act. “We’ve done a few of these before,” he said. “It’s always been a great night. People leave so happy that they didn’t have to drive
into Vancouver for a really professional show. It’s a good time.” The event will also include a 50/50 draw. The show runs from 7 to 9 p.m. in the SDSS theatre. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the door and can be purchased at the Wood N Frog (569412th Ave., Tsawwassen), from any SDSS grad parent, by calling Lisa at 604374-1619 or by sending a request through the SDSS Dry Grad 2016 Facebook page at www.facebook. com/SDSSGrad2016.

Games get new life in exhibit South Delta artist Michael Soltis has a new exhibit in Vancouver opening next Friday. The Games People Play is showing at Kimoto Gallery throughout February with an opening reception set for Friday, Jan. 29. Soltis, who lives in Tsawwassen and has been working in visual arts since 2011, said the inspiration for his latest series hit when he and his wife were cleaning out closets. “I was getting ready to pack up our hall closet and looked at all these board games filling the shelves,” he said in an email. “I was hit with a wave of nostalgia looking at all these dusty boxes — things that used to bring me so much pleasure now never seeing the light of day.” Soltis added he started wondering if there was a way to breathe new life into the old games. “That’s when the idea to create art out of them was born. I wanted to get them out of the closet and on to people’s walls where they can be remembered and hopefully stir conversa-

Clouds of change on horizon
Farmers making preparations to deal with extreme weather brought on by climate change From drought to deluge, climate change means farming the extremes. Farming is the art and science of managing the unmanageable. After three months of drought-like weather conditions in the summer of 2015, Delta was pounded by storms. Heavy rains and extreme wind whipped the coast and caused localized flooding in some areas. For Brent Harris and other farmers around Delta, it brought back memories of a harvest washed away by heavy rains late in the summer of 2010. “It wasn’t one particular killer storm, it just started raining and didn’t stop,” recalls Harris, who lost his potato and bean crops that year. “Everything got so saturated that bean harvesters and combines couldn’t go in the field and we had to abandon the crops.” According to climate change projections, extreme rainfall events in Delta are expected to double in frequency by 2050. Depending on when the rain falls, it can prevent farmers from getting into waterlogged fields to plant or harvest, increase soil erosion and nutrient runoff, and damage crops. The extent of damage from excessive rainfall often depends on how quickly farmers can get water off their fields, making effective drainage critically important. The existing network of private and publicly managed drainage ditches help drain farm fields. The Corporation of Delta’s engineering department plans for and constructs improvements to the public drainage system,

Laser leveling fields also helps to make sure water doesn’t collect in low spots and installing tile drains, another drainage technique, gets rid of subsurface water, but both options come at a cost. “Installing drainage tile is an expensive proposition, and what makes it tough is the reality of land ownership here,” Harris explains. “Land is very expensive, and while farmers own some land, the majority is leased. That means we’re looking at doing expensive capital improvements on land we may or may not have in the future.” Researchers at UBC,

The surface of the soil is also receiving treatments, with farmers planting vegetation in the forms of cover crops and grassland set-asides. They are looking for the best way to get the water off the fields to prevent lost working days, or worse, lost crops. “It’s a big investment to do this kind of research, so to just do it on one farm, one crop, one soil type would really limit applicability to other farmers,” Smukler explains. “Our way of addressing that is to do a large-scale survey of what farmers are doing
and evaluate the outcomes on their fields.” In total, 30 fields will be sampled for soil type, and monitored and assessed for efficacy of range of drainage management practices including cleaning and maintenance on drainage tile systems. “In making drainage decisions, farmers need to figure how frequently they will be dealing with extreme events, the number of lost workable days, crop losses and returns over time,” says Smukler. “One of the main outcomes of this project will be a cost-benefit analysis, and a set of tools to actually make those decisions.” The result? More local food on the table, and less left soaking in the field. Story submitted by the Delta Farmers’ Institute.

“As you get older, the questions come down to about two or three. How long? And what do I do with the time I’ve got left? A few months ago I entered the “50 Club”. It has been a time of reflection and looking forward to what I want to do with the time I’ve got left. In my past, I trained hard. I ran and biked fast and far. I’d get up early and workout with determination and focus. Now, my attention has shifted to one of health, strength and happiness. My movement and exercise regime focuses on well-being and longevity. It’s a bit of a relief to be honest. I enjoy my experiences more. I take time to be grateful for my surroundings. I am more relaxed and in less of a hurry. When you consider David Bowie’s quote, what matters to you? What are you doing with your time? And, what role does your health and personal strength play into making this possible?
Our guarantee is that you will have a positive movement experience every time you are with us. You will move, strengthen, stretch and breathe in a way that feels amazing in your body. Try us out. Begin with our Jumpstart Package, drop into a yoga or meditation class or attend a complimentary seminar on Monday evenings. I am ready to take on this new and amazing year. Lacrosse star’s birthday bash Vancouver Stealth pay tribute to Logan Schuss with bobblehead night MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It will be one big 25th birthday celebration for Logan Schuss on Saturday and 1,000 fans will be taking home a special souvenir to mark the occasion. The Vancouver Stealth are paying tribute to the Ladner lacrosse star with his own bobblehead night when they host the Colorado Mammoth — 7 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. Schuss was acquired by his hometown National Lacrosse League team late last season and is just the second player the club has honoured with this promotion. He was given 10 of his own as keepsakes and dropped by Delta Secondary School to present one to his former teacher Todd Allan. “He told me I’m the first student in DSS history to have his own bobblehead,”smiled the Ohio State University graduate, who suggested Seattle Mariners pitcher James Paxton might not be too far behind. “It’s a pretty cool honour for me and cool for the community to see a small town Ladner boy be able to make it to the top of his sport and get his own bobblehead. “I will definitely be putting some away. My mom has collected everything imaginable from my lacrosse career over the years. It’s all in a bunch of totes in the basement. It’s going to be quite the man cave I have one day.” Local fans also have the option of taking the “Schuss Bus” to the game. The Ravens have hooked up with The Dancing Pig for a three tier promotional package that includes everything from dinner, tickets and transportation from the Ladner restaurant. It was an idea brewed up by Schuss and Stealth commentator Brad Challoner, another hometown boy. “We poked around the idea when we saw the game was on my birthday,” continued Schuss. “It gives young kids a chance to get to the game and even those who might want to have a few

It will be a 25th birthday to remember for Ladner’s Logan Schuss on Saturday when the Vancouver Stealth honour him by giving out 1,000 of his bobbleheads for their game against Colorado. beverages and not have to worry about driving. “The funny thing is, when I was younger, my mom used to take players on my teams to games all over the Lower Mainland in the family van. That was the original ‘Schuss Bus.’” The Stealth are coming off a big 13-11 road win over the Saskatchewan Rush that evened their record at 1-1. It was the first game played in Saskatoon since the defending NLL champions relocated from Edmonton. Vancouver rallied from an 11-8 deficit with five unanswered goals, including four in the fourth quarter. Schuss finished the night with a goal and three assists. “It was one of the most excit-
ing games I have every played in,” said Schuss. “There is not much else to cheer for in Saskatoon other than a WHL team and the (CFL) Riders. “There was close to 10,000 and the arena was full of energy. There were fans yelling through the boards at us and they had the music as loud as it could, from the very first minute, with everyone standing up.” Once the NLL season has concluded, Schuss will once again play box lacrosse. He remains under contract with the Ohio Machine of the U.S. pro field lacrosse league and plans on heading south for a few games next summer when his schedule allows him too. His wish list also includes play-
ing for the Ladner Pioneers — the hometown senior B team that retired his dad (Ed Schuss) and uncle’s (John Schuss) jerseys. Unbeaten Colorado’s lineup features Schuss’ one-time Delta Islanders teammate Eli McLaughlin and rookie Jordan Gilles whom he coached last year as an assistant with his former junior team. “With Eli and Jordan coming here it makes it an even more special night, Schuss added. “Three Delta Junior products on the field for the same game is pretty cool. It’s going to be an exciting game and we want to give our fans a win.” For ticket availability Saturday visit www.stealthlax.com

About 70 young hoopsters participated in a basketball camp last Saturday, led by former national team standout Joey Vickery. The camp was free for Ladner area elementary students and hosted by the Delta Pacer Basketball Association. The second session goes this Saturday from 1-4 p.m.
Ice Hawks secure playoff berth The Delta Ice Hawks are at last in the win column for 2016 and they have clinched a Pacific Junior Hockey League playoff spot too. The Ice Hawks snapped a six game winless streak with a wild 9-6 victory over the visiting Grandview Steelers on Tuesday night in Ladner. The result also extended their margin to 18 points over Port Moody for the final post-season berth in the Tom Shaw Conference, mak-
ing it impossible for Panthers to catch them with eight games remaining. Tsawwassen blueliner Nolan Gallagher had his biggest game in an Ice Hawk uniform since joining the club from the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League 15 games ago. The recently-turned 19-year-old Delta Hockey Academy product had a goal and four assists to help end his team’s longest winless drought of the season.

HOME MARKETING STRATEGIES
O
ccasionally a client will wonder if their home sold fast because it was priced too low. Pricing a home for sale requires much thought, research, and analysis to maximize the seller’s bottom line. The actual sales process can also be a significant factor. In todays limited supply, high demand environment, we can use what we call a “delayed offer presentation” process to obtain the highest sales price possible. At any one time, anywhere from a few to close to dozens of potential buyers may be waiting for a particular type of property to come to the market. Perhaps it’s a singlefamily home in Ladner with suite potential or a spacious home in Tsawwassen with a view. Regardless,
most home buyers today are well aware of what’s new to market. They may receive automatic alerts from MLS systems, scan realtor.ca or other real estate websites, or have their Real Estate representative alert them. Auto alerts are especially prevalent these days. If these dozens of buyers are on alert for a home in a particular neighbourhood, price range, size range, etc., every one of those buyers will receive an email alert as soon as the home is listed.
will go. This is where our “delayed offer presentation” process comes in. Once a home is initially listed we can hold off all offers for a week or so. Holding off on offers for a week gives as many of those initiallyinterested buyers an opportunity to view the home. In that first week, showings are booked, open houses conducted, perhaps advance inspections are done or strata docs reviewed. That first week is a busy time for all involved! Ideally, the home sells at the end of that first week when the actual offer process opens up. And ideally, it sells with more than one buyer wanting it, resulting in the highest sales price for you the home seller. If the home does not sell in that first week that immediate pool of potential buyers has
The key is building up demand to ensure as many of those potential buyers see the home as possible. The more people that view the home, the higher the chance that more will want to bid for the home, and the higher the offer price
just been exhausted. After the week has passed, we only have people new to the market to work with. The original pool of buyers may dwindle in the second, and subsequent, weeks. Less potential buyers, less upward pressure on the sales price. Of course, many variables affect the selling price. With the ongoing uncertainty in the world-wide political arena and financial markets, no doubt at least some homeowners - especially those with single-family homes have decided this is the time to take their gains and move on. Feel free to contact us anytime to discuss your real estate options and possibilities, and how we can work together to maximize the sale price of your home.

Peter was born in 1938 in Wiarton, ON. He graduated from the University of Toronto and McGill University and earned his doctorate at Cornell University. After graduation he taught remote sensing for 29 years in the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia. After many world travels and time in Ontario, Peter and Pat settled in Ladner where they have lived since 1976. Peter is survived by daughters NevaJeanne and Veneda-Lee, step-daughters Janine and Paula and grandchildren Evan, Madison and Luke. Pat and Neva send deep gratitude to Peter’s friends in Ladner and around the world that sent him so much love and support over the past months. A celebration of Peter’s life will take place in his favorite garden this summer. In lieu of flowers please feel free to make a donation to Delta Hospital Foundation at: https://www.dhfoundation.ca/content/donor-centre. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
Glen was raised in Richmond and graduated from Steveston High School. As a young man he was heavily involved in baseball. He worked in the familyowned and operated, Tri Mac Concrete for 20 years. Glen was involved in politics, port management and economic development. He had a love of the water and ran a fishing charter business in Powell River. Glen enjoyed travelling extensively with his wife Edna, but equally enjoyed a good BBQ and sunset in his own backyard.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
