Public gets a look at bridge plans Well-attended open house in Ladner also attracts demonstrators that say crossing not needed SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s a huge project that’s drawing its fair share of opponents and supporters. A well-attended open house was held at the Delta Town &

Country Inn Wednesday to view plans for the bridge that is to replace the tunnel, an initiative with the simple working title of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. The open house was part of “phase three” of the province’s

consultation process, which wrapped up this week. The input will be used along with other technical and financial information to finalize the scope, cost and funding plan for the estimated $3.5-billion crossing. Wednesday’s session was a

busy one with locals filling out feedback forms and posing a myriad of questions and concerns to project staff, ranging from how new interchanges and HOV lanes will work to signage. The open house was the second this week, the first being

held a day before in Richmond where a group calling itself FarmWatch organized a rally “to protest the bridge project and the overspending and lies we’re being told by the B.C. government.” PUBLIC: see Page 3

A Ladner barn was destroyed after a massive fire broke out Wednesday night. Fire crews were called to

Loranda Stables and Kitty Kottage on 28th Avenue near Highway 17 around 11:30 p.m. When firefighters arrived, the building was fully engulfed in flames, but the dozen or so horses and numerous cats had been

safely evacuated. The barn’s roof collapsed, leaving firefighters battling the flames in a defensive mode from the exterior of the building. Once the fire was knocked down, another crew was brought

in a deal with hot spots. “The call out crew could be on scene for most of the morning to ensure complete extinguishment,” Delta fire Chief Dan Copeland said. No word yet on a cause.

An online fundraising campaign was quickly started, and had raised more than $3,000 in just a few hours, to help owner Micaela Robinson rebuild. It can be found at www.gofundme. com/8fjv8zsc.

Without improvements to the current crossing between Delta and Richmond, economic growth and regional livability will be constrained by traffic congestion and increasing travel times, warns the provincial government. Victoria is pushing its case in the midst of its latest consultation process on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. It’s a process that began in 2012 when the government commenced a study of options to address the Highway 99 corridor, which eventually led to a decision that a bridge to replace the tunnel is “the most appropriate and supported solution.” Information was scarce until the government released a Project Definition Report last month that provided details on a 10-lane, tolled crossing that is estimated to cost $3.5 billion. At more than three kilometres in length, the

A ballroom at the Delta Town & Country Inn is jammed Wednesday by members of the public interested in the province’s plans to replace the George Massey Tunnel. cable-stay bridge will be the biggest ever built in B.C. With five lanes in each direction, each side will consist of three general traffic lanes, a lane for slower moving trucks and a dedicated transit/HOV lane. The bridge will also have a separated multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Once the bridge opens, the existing tunnel will be demolished. Highway 99 improvements will include construction of several kilometres of dedicated transit/HOV lanes between Bridgeport Road in Richmond and Highway 91 in Delta, the replacement of the Highway 17A interchange and over-

passes at the Matthews Interchange (96th Street) and at 112th Street. The planned raised alignment of Highway 99 at River Road will allow Delta to extend River Road under the highway to provide a secondary access to Highway 99. The project has triggered an environmental assessment under the

B.C. Environmental Assessment Act, however, a federal assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act is not required as the project does not meet the threshold for such a review. Construction is expected to begin in 2017 and take about five years to complete.

Public continues to provide input on bridge design

CONTINUED from Page 1 At Wednesday’s event in Ladner, a small group, including members of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians, demonstrated outside. “The bridge is not a done deal and there’s resistance to it and $3.5 billion is a lot of money to

spend for something that’s not needed. One of concerns, not just the money, is what’s going to happen to the Fraser estuary,” said Cathy Wilander. Saying a bridge will simply encourage sprawl while shifting congestion to the Oak Street Bridge, Peter van der Velden

warned there will be five years of traffic “mess” during construction. Inside, project director Geoff Freer said the feedback, so far, has been positive as far as the tunnel being replaced, with people providing input on the bridge design, which may see further refinements.

“Really what we’re finding is people are very supportive and people are coming here to find out details. They want to know about all the practical things, including what it will look like and what it will mean to the environment, but they have been supportive of the project,”

Freer said. According to the province, almost 60 per cent of trips through the tunnel are between Richmond and communities south of the Fraser River. Once completed, it’s estimated journey times for commuters could be reduced by up to 30 minutes a day.

TSAWWASSEN

• Jan. 20, 5:06 p.m., 1400-block of Garden Place: Complainant reported the theft of tools from an unlocked cupboard in his parking stall in the underground parking garage. Items stolen include a Pittsburgh tool kit, torque wrench and a Moto Master power pack battery charger. • Jan. 20, 8:15 p.m., Tsawwassen Drive and Highway 17A: During a traffic stop police located a person matching the description of a suspect in an assault and utter threats case. The officer also noted the odour of liquor from the suspect. Two breath samples provided by the suspect both read “Fail” and as a consequence a roadside suspension and ticket were issued. The suspect was arrested and held in cells for the assault and utter threats. • Jan. 20, 11:26 p.m., 5400-block of 16th Avenue:

Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The driver admitted to consuming a glass of wine with the last sip 30 minutes before driving. Two breath samples provided by the suspect both read “Warn” and as a result the driver was issued with a three-day roadside suspension and the driver’s license was seized. • Jan. 22, 10:24 p.m., 1100-block of Fairway Views Wynd: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone had gained entry to her vehicle by prying open the passenger side door causing $2,000 in damage. It is believed the suspects fled when the car alarm sounded. • Jan. 23, 6:20 p.m., 1000-block of 50B Street: A citizen provided the police with the license plate number of a vehicle they had witnessed side swiping a vehicle parked on the west side of the street and then leave the scene of the accident. Police located a woman who indicated she had been driving in the area and had heard a loud bang but was not aware she had hit another vehicle. The suspect was indignant that police would think she would knowingly leave the scene of an accident. No charges due to the circumstances and the information was forwarded to ICBC. • Jan. 23, 7:03 p.m., Erin Place: Complainant reported her vehicle parked in her driveway was broken into sometime overnight and rummaged throughout. A tote bag valued at $50 was stolen. The vehicle did not sus-

tain any damage and the complainant indicated she may have left the vehicle unlocked. • Jan. 23, 4:30 p.m., 5300-block of Spetifore Crescent: Sometime overnight someone entered the complainant’s unlocked vehicle parked in her driveway and rummaged through the vehicle. Suspects stole $15 in cash. • Jan. 23, 2:22 p.m., 500-block of Erin Place: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone had accessed her vehicle parked in her driveway. Suspects removed items from the center console and glove box, stealing about $35 in cash. The complainant indicated she had left her vehicle unlocked with the driver’s side window down. • Jan. 23, 1 a.m., 1100block of Fairway Views Wynd: A report received from complainant that she had left her vehicle for about a week in the unlocked parking garage. When she returned she found the driver door and glove box both had the locks punched out. Several items valued at about $400 were missing from the vehicle.

LADNER

• Jan. 20, 7:17 a.m., 7900-block of Vantage Way: A business reported thieves had cut two holes in the perimeter fence of the parking lot and removed two exhaust systems from two trucks. The exhaust systems were worth between $7,000 and $10,000 each and without them the trucks were inoperable. Investigation

ongoing. • Jan. 22, 2:25 p.m., 6100-block of Ferry Road: A contractor reported that sometime overnight someone had entered the boat he is working on and stole numerous tools. Forensic examination conducted. • Jan. 24, 9:14 p.m., 5800-block of Crescent Drive: Police stopped a vehicle observed weaving over the yellow line. A strong odour of alcohol was emitting from the driver who initially denied consumption of liquor but later admitted to a drink of wine earlier in the evening. Two breath samples provided by the suspect read “Fail” and as a result the suspect was given a roadside suspension and a vehicle ticket. The vehicle was impounded and the suspect was picked up by family members. • Jan. 24, 2:34 p.m., 5300-block of Wellburn Drive: Complainant made an online report indicating his vehicle parked in his driveway was broken into sometime overnight. No damage to the vehicle as it had been left unlocked. Items stolen include two pairs of expensive Maui Jim and Oakley sunglasses and small change. • Jan. 24, 11:24 a.m., 4900-block of Central Avenue: Report received from complainant that sometime overnight someone had entered his unlocked parked car and stole his Maui Jim sunglasses, phone charger and wallet. Be cautious as tax scam back

Delta to sell old fire hall site

Fraudster posing as CRA rep JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Corporation of Delta is looking at new commercial uses for the former volunteer fire hall at the interchange of highways 10 and 99. The municipality is planning to sell the property, which is less than two acres in size and deemed surplus, with the building on it, which would allow a potential purchaser to repurpose the structure or demolish it.

It’s getting close to tax time and a familiar scam is making the rounds again. The ruse sees scammers call, or email, potential victims and pretend to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. The goal is to get access to personal and banking information. One resident who contacted the Optimist said she was told she owed back taxes and was threatened with serious consequences if she didn’t pay them immediately. The woman didn’t give out any information, and reported the incident to Delta police. “I always advise people never provide your personal information over the phone or email on the basis of one out of the blue call or message,” said A/ Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “Take note of the information if you are unsure, and then do your own checks for phone numbers or contact

people. Go through legitimate sources to confirm the information.” Complicating matters, fraudsters can add an air of legitimacy to the scam by using phone “spoofing” apps or programs that allow them to display contact numbers legitimately linked to the Canada Revenue Agency. To protect yourself against scammers, police recommend: • Never provide personal information over the phone unless you are speaking to a confirmed, trusted source. • Do your research: hang up and double check the information through sources you trust and have identified yourself. • Do not click any links in unsolicited emails. • If in doubt, hang up the phone or delete the email. • Report frauds to your local police department, even if you do not lose any money. Your reports can help warn other residents.

TransLink modifying pair of local bus routes JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

TransLink representatives were at Delta council this week to talk about proposed changes to local routes. As part of its annual review of the transportation network, the transit authority conducted a survey to gauge public reaction to more than 85 proposed changes, including modifications to two routes in South Delta. Tim Savoie, vice-president of transportation planning and policy, told civic politicians that of the 1,200 completed surveys, 300 respondents self-identified as living in South Delta. The public consultation was completed between Oct. 13 and Nov. 6, however, the process continues, he said. “The process is not yet completed… I don’t want council to feel this is a done deal.” The proposed changes

would affect the 601 and 609 routes, as well as the 620 Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal express route. “These routes are extremely busy,” said Dan Freeman, transit network manager. The 601 and 609 routes will be amended to also serve the Tsawwassen First Nation malls once they are open later this year. Proposed changes to the 620 route will help speed up travel times to and from the ferry terminal by eliminating some of the less used stops, Freeman said. As well, proposed improvements at the terminal should help speed up loading and unloading of passengers, which can be a longer process if they have baggage. Freeman said the proposed changes had good support through initial public feedback. TransLink also recently established the Southwest Area Transport Plan, which brought together stakeholders

in Delta, Richmond and Tsawwassen First Nation to identify a long-term vision and address transportation, transit and infrastructure needs. Mayor Lois Jackson and engineering director Steven Lan attended the first meeting. Several council members took the opportunity this week to lobby to have the 601 service to downtown restored, something local politicians have been pushing for since the route was discontinued in 2009 with the opening of the Canada Line. Now transit users trying to get into Vancouver from South Delta must take the bus to the Bridgeport station in Richmond. Freeman said that while the comments are appreciated, reinstating full bus service into downtown is not feasible right now. “It’s really just good planning process to get people to the most efficient form of transit,” Savoie said.

ake the other guy pay. Insights West released the results of a poll this week that surveyed Lower Mainland residents on the plan to replace the George Massey Tunnel with a tolled bridge as well as specific ideas to help fund transit projects. The findings on the bridge (51 per cent support the proposal, 32 per cent oppose it) aren’t terribly surprising, but when people were asked about transit funding sources, their answers highlighted the divide that exists out there. Metro Vancouverites were solidly against pretty much any revenue generation idea, with increasing property or fuel taxes, tolling roads or hiking transit fares all opposed by two-thirds or more of those surveyed. Opinions begin to diverge, however, when respondents are broken down by their mode of transportation. The poll found those who drive to school or work are more likely to support increasing transit fares (41 per cent) than those who take public transit (17 per cent). Conversely, public transit users are more likely to endorse a vehicle levy (42 per cent) than those who drive on a daily basis (25 per cent). As Mario Canseco of Insights West suggests, the preferred solution for some lies in making the other guy pay. It’s only natural to think you’re shouldering more of the burden than that other guy, but it also underlines the difficulty regional politicians face when they seek funding sources for transportation improvements. There’s widespread agreement on the inadequacy of both the road and transit networks, but who should pay to rectify the situation is far less clear. The provincial sales tax covers everyone, so the half-point hike that was shot down in last year’s TransLink plebiscite might have been, in hindsight, the fairest way to distribute the pain, although it’s unlikely we’ll see that idea resurface in the inevitable follow-up vote. No, I suspect Lower Mainland mayors, who are devising a new way for us to pay for much-needed infrastructure, will end up looking to drivers as the primary funding source, although I imagine they’ll also be in the pockets of transit users to ensure no segment is singled out or overlooked. You know it has no chance of flying with voters unless the other guy is made to pay.

Industry desperately needs next generation of farmers

W

e have all heard by now that the average age of farmers in Canada is increasing. In British Columbia, this benchmark is approaching 57. There are some encouraging signs that younger people, especially women, are searching out farming opportunities that are not of typical size and scope of more traditional large-scale farming operations. In any agriculture plan, be it municipal, provincial or federal, education is always identified as a key pillar for developing long-term sustainable farming operations, regardless of size. Worldwide, there are some organizations that are working hard to educate children about farming, food and nutritional health. With cases of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes growing continually, the time has come for governments, private businesses and agencies to work together on a cohesive plan to engage our youth and show them the value farming. The Jamie Oliver Foundation, based in London, England, and the Edible Schoolyard Project, based in Berkley, California, are two of the most well-known agencies whose sole purpose is to teach kids how to grow, harvest and eat their own food. We are surrounded by farming operations in our community, yet succession challenges are proving problematic to maintain the fam-

ily farm. The recognition that it is important to educate new generations of farmers is a good step that has generally been ignored. In British Columbia, the food economy is a large contributor to our overall GDP. There was once a time when agriculture was considered a primary resource along with forestry, mining and fishing. Times have changed, yet the need for a supply of fresh, locally sourced food has never been greater. We are lucky here in Delta in that we have a school district that is constantly seeking innovation to fulfill its “bold vision.” Children in our district have been afforded the opportunity to grow, harvest and eat their own food on school farms in the Project Pickle program. They are learning life lessons that will assist them in making wise food choices in the future and they are developing skills they will be able to pass on to their children. In September of this year, the

Delta district will once again innovate and offer senior secondary students the opportunity to participate in a “mini-school” based around farming and agriculture at the old Boundary Beach Elementary site. Called Farm Roots Mini School, participating grade 10, 11 and 12 students will spend one day at their regular high school and then the second day at the mini school to study courses in the classroom and build farming operations on district-owned land at the site. Courses designed around environmental and agricultural sciences are being co-developed with Kwantlen Polytechnic University and will be finalized shortly. With Project Pickle as an incubator, it is expected the mini school will be well attended in coming years. There are an abundance of jobs and careers related to farming and the food economy. As food becomes an increasingly valuable commodity, it is important that we have the bodies ready and able to carry on with maintaining the industry. Programming in Delta shows we are committed and doing our part. To learn more, there will be a Farm Roots open house on Saturday, Feb. 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Boundary Beach Elementary. Bring your kids. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food.

Letters Owners must keep dogs away from play areas

Editor: I would like to ask that we keep dogs out of areas where children play. I understand that children play everywhere, so that’s not what I mean. I am talking about school grounds, playgrounds and playing fields. Delta has plenty of signs telling people to leash and pick up after their dogs or face a fine, but unfortunately, too many people ignore these signs and this results in playgrounds (not as common) and playing fields with piles of poop on them. If we stop taking our dogs to these places, this won’t happen. Even if most have good intentions of picking up after their dog, if you let a dog off leash on a field and it runs a few hundred yards away and goes to the bathroom, you may not be able to find it. Or you may be distracted and miss it. Or you are walking ahead and miss it. There are too many variables and too many piles of poop left behind. The simple answer is to not let dogs on playgrounds and playing fields. Kids play soccer every night at various fields. Right now, my son’s team plays at Brandrith Park. At a recent practice, I found poop and picked it up

before anyone stepped in it. At another, my son stepped in it, then pointed out more one foot from their water bottles and jackets. It is dark when we arrive and it’s hard to see. I picked it up and later hosed down his cleats. At another practice, his teammate fell in some, so we took him (in tears) to the bathroom to wash. I don’t feel like we should have to check the fields for poop before we start practice. I can see that the fields are lovely places to walk, and people want to use them for their dogs when they are empty, but this isn’t working. There are a lot of dogs in Delta and there are a lot of responsible owners. I think the responsible owners, if they knew this was happening, would probably agree to keep off the fields. And for the irresponsible owners who don’t care, it will be easier for a bylaw officer to simply catch someone on the field than it is to catch them in the act of not picking up. I have been in touch with the Delta Community Animal Shelter and it is committed to being present in our parks and reminding people of their responsibilities as dog owners. Teryne Russell

Gov’t considered another tunnel but found bridge better option

Editor: Re: Public deserved to have a look at tunnel proposal, letter to the editor, Jan. 20 I would like to clarify some information provided to Optimist readers in a recent letter by Douglas George Massey. During 2012 and 2013, in the course of its due diligence in determining the best option to replace the George Massey Tunnel, the project team did consult with companies with expertise in immersed tunnel technology to ensure we were up to date with what was going on around the world. This informed our decision to proceed with a bridge. Since the 1950s when the current tunnel was built, seismic standards have changed, and we’ve learned a lot about how soils behave in earthquakes and the risks associated with construction within a high seismic area such as the Lower Mainland. This has a significant bearing on our options to replace the

To build a tunnel to the same seismic standards as the new bridge would require dredging of a deep trench in the bottom of the river. This would have a significant effect on the Fraser River environment. The earth along the entire length of the tunnel would have to be reinforced using underwater stone columns, sand, gravel and boulders. This includes reinforcing along the sides and underneath

a new tunnel. Keep in mind, we would have to build two separate five-lane wide tubes that, due to their size and need for protection, would have to be installed even lower than the current tunnel, leaving a massive footprint on the riverbed. By comparison, a new bridge can be constructed with minimal disturbance in the Fraser River, as the main piers will be on land, at the edge of the river, and then used as a base

for construction, rather than in the river. As well, the new bridge will be built within the existing right-of-way so will require less private property and have less impact on agriculture, parks, recreation and the environment. A new tunnel would have to be built on a new alignment, upstream or downstream, and require a significant amount of private property acquisition to build a new road right-of-way. In short, we thoroughly reviewed the benefits of all options. A bridge will be safer, more seismically sound, more environmentally friendly and more cost effective than a replacement tunnel. I hope the public will take the time to learn more about this project and participate in our third phase of consultation, underway right now. More information is available at www. masseytunnel.ca. Snowflake

New Zealand Rabbit, White, Spayed Female Young Adult, (Approximately 8 months old) Snowflake came to us as a stray and we were very surprised. This girl is gorgeous and although slightly shy to begin with she is easy to handle. She can be encouraged to come out and visit with some tasty veggies. Snowflake is still fairly new so we will update her profile once we’ve gotten to know her better. Rabbits are really fun, friendly and quirky pets! They do great as indoor pets and can be litter box trained! Not all rabbits are great with kids but out of the 30 + rabbits we have some that would do fine! Most rabbits don’t like to be picked up but are social and very interactive. All of the rabbits adopted from DCAS are spayed/neutered and provided with ID. An adoption application is required so that we can help you prepare for the 10 year commitment of happy rabbit ownership!

Fraser is inextricably linked to Delta’s fishing heritage Local society looking to preserve history in an educational way JOHN STEVENS

Optimist contributor

Our beloved Fraser River is, in my view, the mother of Delta’s fishing heritage. The Fraser River has a very interesting history and, of course, the river’s history is intertwined with Delta’s history. The Fraser River estuary has evolved over the last 10,000 years, since the last Ice Age. In this time, a rich flood plain has formed, which in turn has become habitat for an amazing array of lifeforms, both flora and fauna. The earliest evidence of local human habitation is at the Glenrose Cannery site, and is 9,000 years old. The Fraser’s mouth was located around the Glenrose site at that time. At the time of European contact, the Fraser River was a force to be reckoned with. The estuary was a huge flood plain with a series of channels that were altered by annual spring freshets. The creation of dikes throughout the Fraser Valley stabilized the main channels of the Fraser River. At that time the deepest channel of the Fraser’s South Arm flowed past Port Guichon and seaward through

John Stevens is president of the Delta Fishing Heritage Society. Canoe Pass. Port Guichon became a deep sea port, and the current at maximum ebb formed large whirlpools just above the Westham Island Bridge. All of that began to change around 1950 with a series of trifurcation projects being built to divert the South Arm channel to Steveston Channel. A rock wall was laid along the upper end of Kirkland Island and the upper end of Deas Slough was blocked permanently. All of Ladner Reach and Canoe Pass have been heavily silted since then. The river was altered to accommodate shipping.

Does the Virto V Replace Traditional Hearing Aids? Whether at work, during conversations in small groups or when watching television, one in six adults experience problems when it comes to accurate speech comprehension and hearing in everyday situations. Although background noise and music can impair communication with friends and family, two thirds of those affected still do not use any hearing aids. There are many reasons for this but for most people it’s that they are not convinced that hearing aids will significantly benefit them or it’s the unease they feel about attracting attention by wearing a visible hearing aid. This is why the Swiss manufacturer Phonak has developed a world first: Virto V. These hearing aids are manufactured using a modern 3D printing process that provides a custom-fit miniature hearing aid that disappears into the ear canal, making it almost invisible to others. Despite its small size, the latest and most advanced Phonak hearing technology is still contained in the casing.

For some clients, the smaller design of the Virto V hearing aids might possibly replace the more traditional behind-the-ear hearing aids, and like many of our other products, these hearing aids can easily connect wirelessly with TVs and smartphones,” explains Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of the Swiss manufacturer Phonak. See how the virtually invisible Virto V fits into your daily routine.

Prof. Stefan Launer, CSO of Swiss If you are interested in finding out more manufacturer Phonak, presents about these new hearing aids, the first step is to book hearing evaluation and the new Virto V hearing aids. Virtual function of the ear

“Thanks to a new operating system, these new hearing aids can provide a virtual alternative for natural hearing, as experienced by people with normal hearing. Through intelligent control, the software can improve speech understanding, even in loud situations and by utilizing the 3D printing process, these hearing aids fit the natural anatomy of the ear as closely as possible making them truly a custom-fit solution.

In its history the Fraser River has also been altered by pollution and resource extraction, such as mining and logging in its watershed. However, our society has been somewhat successful in mitigating these threats by enacting laws to prevent pollution, building sewage treatment plants and improving logging practises. There is no doubt that Fraser River salmon runs have been affected negatively by human activity, but we can change that. Deltans, like most Canadians, are more environmentally aware than ever.

One of the projects of the Delta Fishing Heritage Society is the creation of a Fraser River Estuary Interpretive Centre, which would provide education about the history and importance of the estuary, and the need to maintain its natural state. In terms of food security, we should strive to maximize the Fraser River estuary’s full potential to produce food from the land and waters. To me, fishing heritage is all about preserving our history in a way that educates and informs us about the past so we clearly understand the present and are able to plan for the future needs of our society. Healthy fish stocks would be a great achievement. In closing, I would invite everyone to attend the Delta Fishing Heritage Society’s rescheduled Salmon Dinner and Concert, set for Saturday, Feb.13 at the Ladner Fishermen’s’ Co-op Hall at 6 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at Angela’s Boutique or by calling me at 604-946-9902. Road work on Arthur Drive this spring means the cycling leg of the annual Delta Triathlon has been eliminated this year.

Delta Triathlon becomes Splash N’ Dash for 2016 Road construction prevents cycling component The annual Delta Triathlon is taking on a different look this year. Due to roadway improvements that are scheduled along the usual triathlon route, the adult portion of the event has been turned into a Splash N’ Dash. This year’s event for those 16 and up will consist of a 600-metre swim and a five-kilometre run. The biking portion had to be left out this year

due to road construction along Arthur Drive south of 44th Avenue. The annual Kids of Steel triathlon is going ahead as usual with two distances — a 100-metre swim, 3.75-kilometre bike and one-kilometre run for kids aged eight to 11 and a 300metre swim, 7.5 kilometre bike and two-kilometre run for those 12 to 15. There is also a relay option for the kids’ triath-

lon. Both the Splash N’ Dash and Kids of Steel triathlon are scheduled for Saturday, April 23. The Splash N’ Dash will start at 7 a.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The triathlon starts at 11:30 a.m. Registration for both events is now open. Visit www.delta.ca/ parks-recreation/deltatriathlon for more information.

The Value of Volunteering for Seniors

Seniors often find themselves having to adapt to a new life, one without the usual work routine and a different family life. The transition to a quieter, less hectic lifestyle can be difficult. After an extra morning coffee just to pass some time the lack of things to do during the day can lead to a feeling of loneliness. To combat the feeling and the possibility of depression and sadness there are plenty of opportunities to be around people and keep busy through volunteerism. And it not only provides benefits to the senior, keeping them busy and helping them feel good about giving but also to the community for the good work they do.

livingfamilymemories.com

It also can provide seniors in these ways:

Ev?=y@n? HB< A S;@=y…

u Meet new people and develop different social and cultural relationships. u Provide a sense of purpose.

Whato’surs? y

u Utilize the skills and talents they have developed over the years. u Build upon, or add to, hobbies. u Some volunteering can help a senior stay fit and active. u Provide mentorship for their children and grand-children. Choosing a volunteer position where the senior can contribute not only helps realize that they still can make a strong contribution to the world at large but also helps realize the many years of working and learning are still being put to good use.

604-468-4935

Some of the areas where seniors are most likely to find volunteer positions include churches, hospitals, and foundations. There are also a number of community organizations that use volunteers to keep their programs viable. The library, museum, local Rotary or other service clubs, sports teams, auxiliaries, food banks, and animal shelters are just a few of the areas help is needed.

Delta Secondary staff and students are preparing for the school’s third annual 30-hour famine organized by Student Government and International Friendship Association. Next month’s event is one of compassion, kindness and hope for a better future, and it hits close to home for some at the Ladner high school. Those who signed up will be collecting pledges to not eat for 30 hours, stretching from 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11 to midnight the following day, in recognition of those in developing countries that do not have a source of food. The money raised from pledges will go to the kindergarten class at the Tekera Resource Centre in Uganda run by ICEF Canada. Delta Secondary has developed a close relationship with those

They will be doing so this March to deliver money raised from the 30-hour famine. “It’s a very rewarding task as we have such a long lasting relationship with [these countries],” says teacher Chris Dobrovolny, the lead organizer. The famine will feature an opening presentation

on development projects in Nicaragua and Uganda, followed by a few exercises to help participants get to know one another. There will be games and activities throughout as well as a small party at the end to celebrate their achievements. During the famine students are permitted beverages such as water, fruit juice, Gatorade and herbal tea. Student Shawn Dhaliwal, 18, is looking forward to next month’s event. “It’s a way I can learn about people in places who don’t have the privilege to food everyday while raising awareness for hunger around the world at the same time,” he says. be our guide. Jesus, following his baptism in the Jordan, went into the desert alone for 40 days — a season in the church called Lent. This was a time of reflection and prayer, I’m certain, but there he met and overcame temptation too. Quiet times can be both refreshing and challenging — a reality that Jesus lived through, but he never stopped connecting to God for strength and courage for his journey. Lent begins on Feb. 10 this year. Will you search out some quiet time? Look for God in the quiet, and be refreshed knowing that God will be with you always, even in the times of trial. L! IA EC SP

Now, I don’t mean to be flippant, but I think that Jesus might have been an introvert. It seems to me that when I read the first three books of the Newer Testament, Matthew, Mark, and Luke — that Jesus quite often “goes off by himself to pray.” The other thing to note is that when this occurs, it is preceded by a public event or teaching or healing. Many years ago, I had the pleasure to work with a colleague who was definitely an extrovert — and we made the perfect teammates. I would slow down at the end of a service and he would “rev-up.” He couldn’t wait to go into “coffee hour” and connect with everyone in the room!

Get in touch with Hawaii’s ukulele renaissance Touring a factory is one way to see one of islands’ most time-honoured traditions CHRIS MCBEATH

Optimist contributor

If the ukulele is one of Hawaii’s most enduring signatures, then touring a ukulele factory is to get up close and personal with some of the islands’ most time-honoured traditions. Though take note, like the instrument itself, choosing your encounter makes all the difference to the experience you’ll enjoy. Ko’Aloha and Kamaka are two that deliver more than great music. Aloha Ko’aloha Located in a working backstreet of Honolulu, Ko’aloha is an inconspicuous factory dressed not to impress. But the familial welcome embodies the aloha spirit and in its tiny reception, the intriguing showcase of ukes is testament to a special heritage. The working area beyond is more akin to an overcrowded, compressed Home Depot. Rough koa lumber is piled to the ceiling; milled

sheets are stacked like vertical reams waiting a fuller expression; and the air heavy with dancing sawdust, sweet smells of wood, Hawaiian humidity and glue. The atmosphere, however, is charged with the focused intention of almost 30 artisans hammering, sawing, sanding, shaping and meticulously crafting the components that make up some of the most sought after ukuleles in the world. Sure, you’ll see the occasional lathe and high-powered saw, but clothes pegs still help to form the ukulele’s shapely curves, and artisans still craft and assemble every instrument by hand. Often, a single ukulele can involve some 20 craftsman to manufacture; custom orders with a particular musicality and decorative features such as mother-of-pearl inlays can easily take a year or two to finish. Mastering the Musical

Crafting a Ko’Aloha ukulele. Flea Although widely regarded as uniquely Hawaii, the ukulele is actually the creative adaptation of a machete de braga, an instrument brought over in the late 1800s when Portuguese immigrants were contracted to work the sugar cane plantations. Translated, ukulele is the Hawaiian word for “jumping flea,” so nicknamed for its sublimely nimble sound that quickly

enchanted islanders, and no one more so that Sam Kamaka Sr., founder of his namesake factory in 1916. Kamaka The patriarch of this third and fourth generation family business is best remembered for originating (and patenting) the ever-popular oval-shaped Pineapple Ukulele that today is one of several models the factory produces. Although the business

is quite a sophisticated operation, the making of a Kamaka ukulele is still an exercise in patience and craftsmanship. It takes a minimum of 12 months to air dry the koa wood and stretch it in order to achieve the right resonance and tonality before the mahogany necks and rosewood fingerboards are added. Here, mass production means turning out perhaps 3,000 units a year, each one built to last a lifetime and longer because like the company, a Kamaka is often passed from one generation to the next. As anomalous as it sounds for an instrument maker, Kamaka even employs one or two craftspeople who are hard of hearing. In 1955, when good employees were hard to find, they hired two such individuals and quickly learned their perceived disability turned out to be a benefit. Their heightened sense

of touch enabled them to measure the thickness of the ukulele sound boxes with complete accuracy by drumming their fingers on the wood and feeling the vibrations — a tactic that is still used today, albeit more as a personal challenge to check the machine’s accuracy. Celebrity Ukes With players such as Tiny Tim, Daniel Ho, George Harrison and even Laurel & Hardy among their clients, Kamaka and Ko’Aloha are considered rival kings of the ukulele world. Once looked upon as rather an oddity, today the humble strummer is enjoying a remarkable renaissance. It is fast replacing the recorder as the musical instrument of choice in many schools. Lots to discuss for Tsawwassen News Club PRISCILLA LEUNG

Optimist contributor

From Kinder Morgan pipelines to B.C. Hydro smart meters to the George Massey Tunnel, there’s no shortage of headlines for members of the Tsawwassen News Club. The club, which launched at the Tsawwassen Library earlier this month, is a chance for people to discuss what’s making news around the world and locally. Participants can raise a topic or just come to enjoy the conversation. While still attracting a small crowd, the club has become a gathering spot for “newshounds,” a term library staff member and club coordinator Donna Ellis describes as someone who is “always looking at the news, looking at multiple sources.” “It’s always a mad rush for the newspaper,” says Ellis, whose idea for a news club was spurred by the number

of people she noticed sitting alone once they got their hands on the latest edition. That combined with the lack of senior programs at the library led Ellis to form the club. “It’s very relaxing,” says Linda Seton on the openminded environment of the discussions. Ellis says it’s not just a place for people to come to listen to the news, but also a spot to make new friendships. “No one else is doing something like this,” she says. Ellis and other club participants hope to hear from some new voices at future meetings. “It gets people talking,” says Roger Macpherson, a longtime Tsawwassen resident, “it’s an interesting concept. The club meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Tsawwassen Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The next The Tsawwassen Library launched the Tsawwssen News Club earlier this month. meeting is set for Feb. 9.

Family Fun Craft Day returning to Ladner Baptist Church

Ladner Baptist Church is hosting its third annual Family Fun Craft Day, an event that serves families of individuals of all ages that have varied physical, medical, mental, emotional or behavioural needs and abilities. Attendance has grown considerably since the first event in February of 2014, and has proven to be an invaluable place for families to gather, meet other families, as well as serve as an outlet where siblings can socialize. As always, there will be lots of help available, at least 10 new and creative arts and crafts, and a community art project that will be on display when complete. This year, the gym will be

transformed into a cardboard city, encouraging lots of imaginative play for all ages. The event aims to provide a welcoming and accessible environment where parents, siblings, grandparents and friends can spend quality time together. It is being billed as a great way to celebrate both Family Day and Valentine’s Day. Family Fun Craft Day is on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information, call 604946-0141. The event is wheelchair accessible and admission is free. Ladner Baptist Church is located at 5624 Ladner Trunk Rd. Visit www.ladnerbaptist.ca.

Two field trips and a free community presentation are also scheduled. Race for 2nd place heating up Ice Hawks, Sockeyes and Steelers battle for seeding in upcoming playoffs MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Richmond Sockeyes missed out on opportunity to take over second place and, at the same time, may have let another team join the race. The Delta Ice Hawks scored four unanswered goals Tuesday night to hand Richmond a 5-2 loss and set the stage for what should be a wild finish for the final three playoff spots in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference. A week earlier, the fourth place Ice Hawks were riding a six game winless streak and headed into their home ice tilt nine points back of the Grandview Steelers. A 9-6 triumph would launch a three game win streak that now has Delta within three points of the suddenly struggling Steelers. In the meantime, the Sockeyes continued their roller coaster ride of late with a depleted line-up that required a pair of call-ups to fil out

their roster. Richmond dropped a 7-2 home ice decision to Ridge Meadows, but then came up with a big 4-2 road win over league-leading North Vancouver two nights later, only to fall to the Ice Hawks. The unpredictability should continue over the final three weeks of the regular season thanks to balance the league hasn’t seen in some time. “It’s probably the most parity I have seen in the nine years I have been involved,” said Ice Hawks general manager Peter Zerbinos. “That’s a good thing for the league. Before we use to have teams running away with it by Christmas. “This year in the playoffs, you just don’t know what’s going to happen.” It’s a reason why coaches and management are not losing any sleep on figuring out potential quarter-final match-ups. The Wolf Pack have already locked up to spot in the Tom

Shaw Conference yet the Hawks have played the defending league champions very tough with a 2-2-1 record in the season series. Richmond has not beaten the Steelers in five meetings but each game has been close, including the last three going to overtime. “If you’re planning to go all the way then you are going to have to play everyone eventually anyways,” continued Zerbinos. “You’re only focus should be on the next team in your way.” A power play goal from South Delta native Nick Wicks, midway through the second period, gave the Sockeyes a 2-1 lead. That’s when the Ice Hawks came to life, led by local product Luc Soares. The 19-year-old, who joined the club in the new year from the junior “A” ranks, notched a pair of goals to close out the frame and give the hosts the lead for good. Captain Quinten Wideski doubled the margin in the opening minute of the third period and

Sam Kozlowski added an empty netter in the final minute. Cam Cuthbert had the other Delta goal, while Tyler Paterson opened the scoring for Richmond back in the first period. After going through changes at all levels, the Ice Hawks hope they have at last hit stride with the postseason looming. “This team from the beginning has gone through a lot of changes,” added Zerbinos. “Everything from ownership, general manager, coaching and systems of play. We were probably a month or so behind every other team. It takes time to adjust and, on top of that, we have have brought in about five new players too. “Everything is starting to come together. I’m not going to say it was liked we planned but we were hoping to get to this point. This was a big game for us and that’s when you hope your 19-and-20year-olds step up like they did today.”

HOME MARKETING STRATEGIES

O

ccasionally a client will wonder if their home sold fast because it was priced too low. Pricing a home for sale requires much thought, research, and analysis to maximize the seller’s bottom line. The actual sales process can also be a significant factor. In todays limited supply, high demand environment, we can use what we call a “delayed offer presentation” process to obtain the highest sales price possible. At any one time, anywhere from a few to close to dozens of potential buyers may be waiting for a particular type of property to come to the market. Perhaps it’s a singlefamily home in Ladner with suite potential or a spacious home in Tsawwassen with a view. Regardless,

most home buyers today are well aware of what’s new to market. They may receive automatic alerts from MLS systems, scan realtor.ca or other real estate websites, or have their Real Estate representative alert them. Auto alerts are especially prevalent these days. If these dozens of buyers are on alert for a home in a particular neighbourhood, price range, size range, etc., every one of those buyers will receive an email alert as soon as the home is listed.

will go. This is where our “delayed offer presentation” process comes in. Once a home is initially listed we can hold off all offers for a week or so. Holding off on offers for a week gives as many of those initiallyinterested buyers an opportunity to view the home. In that first week, showings are booked, open houses conducted, perhaps advance inspections are done or strata docs reviewed. That first week is a busy time for all involved! Ideally, the home sells at the end of that first week when the actual offer process opens up. And ideally, it sells with more than one buyer wanting it, resulting in the highest sales price for you the home seller. If the home does not sell in that first week that immediate pool of potential buyers has

The key is building up demand to ensure as many of those potential buyers see the home as possible. The more people that view the home, the higher the chance that more will want to bid for the home, and the higher the offer price

just been exhausted. After the week has passed, we only have people new to the market to work with. The original pool of buyers may dwindle in the second, and subsequent, weeks. Less potential buyers, less upward pressure on the sales price. With the ongoing uncertainty in the world-wide political arena and financial markets, no doubt at least some homeowners - especially those with single-family homes have decided this is the time to take their gains and move on. Feel free to contact us anytime to discuss your real estate options and possibilities, and how we can work together to maximize the sale price of your home.
