Ladner Village is still open for business despite major construction in the area. That’s the message local merchants are hoping to get out to the community. “Everyone is open for busi-

ness and now is the time to support local businesses,” said Ladner Business Association president Andrea Frustaci. Work on the $6-million Delta Street Revitalization Project began last month with the removal of trees. Several of the trees were transplanted elsewhere in the community and all

will eventually be replaced. Part of the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy, the project is aimed at revitalizing South Delta’s infrastructure and strengthening the village core. Work is scheduled to continue throughout most of the year, with completion set for October.

Watermain replacement is currently underway, which will be followed by road and sidewalk construction. The roadwork is being done on a block-by-clock basis to minimize disruptions. Carol Miles, who owns South Delta Heels, said she’s had to close early a couple of times

when the road right outside her Bridge Street store was closed. She said she has seen a huge decrease in business in the last three weeks, especially when the road in front of her store was closed. However, crews have made an effort to keep the sidewalks open, she said. MERCHANTS: see Page 4

Stand-off video at inquest

Hearing sees final two hours as police deal with distraught man holding gun JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The coroner’s inquest into a fatal shooting involving a Delta officer continued this week as the hearing saw video of the victim’s final hours in his standoff with police. The two-hour video was shown Wednesday morning, the second day of the hearing. It was taken from the perspective of a police bomb disposal robot that was used to deliver a phone to Mehrdad Bayrami as he sat on a paved pathway near New Westminster’s Starlight Casino. The 48-year-old Richmond man, who was armed with a gun, was shot on Nov. 8, 2012 following a five-hour standoff with police. Police were called to the casino parking lot after a domestic disturbance in the parking lot between Bayrami and an ex-girlfriend. Delta police Const. Jordan MacWilliams, a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team at the time, was one of many officers responding to the incident. He was assigned the role of lethal overwatch for his team. He was given the responsibility of providing cover for the other officers and to use necessary force if a threat of death or grievous bodily harm was posed. MacWilliams has claimed he had a reasonable fear that Bayrami would fire his weapon at

Bayrami died in hospital 10 days later. MacWilliams was initially charged with second degree murder following an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office. In July, the Criminal Justice Branch announced it was dropping the charges again the officer. A civil suit launched by Bayrami’s daughter was also dismissed late last year. The video, which began at 8:41 a.m., almost three hours into the standoff, shows police delivering a yellow box containing a cell phone to Bayrami as he sat on the ground. The robot moves away but police keep the cam-

era on Bayrami for more than two hours. The video, which contains no sound, shows Bayrami, who is sitting on the ground holding a gun to his head, open the box and answer the phone. He speaks with police as he continues to hold the gun to his right temple. He looks around as he talks on the phone before hanging up and tossing it back in the box. Bayrami remains seated for most of the video, talking to himself and nodding or shaking his head at times. He answers the phone a few more times, sometimes talking briefly while other times simply hanging up. Bayrami keeps the gun pointed at himself for most

of the video, although periodically he lowers it, staring at it in his hands. Almost an hour and 20 minutes into the video, Bayrami can be seen taking the magazine out of the gun and throwing it aside, holding up one finger and nodding. About 10 minutes later, crouching on the ground, he lowers the gun. Nearing the two-hour mark from the start of the video, Bayrami stands up, turns around and looks up for a moment, before turning back around. He begins pacing and walking in a wide circle with his arms at his side, the gun pointing toward the ground. Just before the video was stopped, Bayrami can

be seen pointing the gun in the air and talking. The hearing also heard testimony from Dr. Jeff Morley, a registered psychologist and former RCMP officer who has worked with several law enforcement agencies, including Delta police. Morley was one of several psychologists on a list to be contacted by police when needed. He said he received a call from a police negotiator just before 7:30 that morning. Morley said the officer told him they were dealing with a man armed with a gun who was refusing to engage with negotiators and indicated that “he was not leaving alive.” He said it was a relatively brief call and he encouraged the officer to remain calm and grounded. MacWilliams was scheduled to take the stand yesterday afternoon. A coroner’s inquest is usually required when a death occurs while a person is in police custody and involves a jury of between five and seven people and a presiding coroner. The inquest is not a trial to determine guilt, or find fault, but to determine the facts surrounding a death and allow the jury to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. The hearing is scheduled to continue into next week. • Check out www.deltaoptimist.com for the latest on the inquest.

Gas leak closes 56th Street PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

The southbound lanes of Tsawwassen’s 56th Street were closed yesterday between 17th and 19th avenues due to a gas leak. Delta fire and police departments were on scene after construction crews working in the area severed a gas line. Witnesses described a strong smell of gas in the air that stretched to Beach Grove. Traffic was diverted around the closure through the South Delta Recreation Centre parking lot.

Merchants to benefit from work in long run CONTINUED from Page 1 Miles said the construction process will be difficult for local businesses but will be a benefit in the end. “You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs,” she said. Delta has created a map of alternate parking locations. It can be found at www.delta.ca and at the project office, 4811 Delta St. Frustaci, who owns two Ladner Village restaurants, The Dancing Pig and Sharkey’s Seafood Bar & Grille, said communication between the municipality and local businesses has been good. He said representatives have attended LBA meetings and municipal hall also put up signs to advise shoppers about construction and alternate parking. As for his own busi-

nesses, Frustaci said this is typically a slower time of year for the restaurants, and the work is primarily done during regular business hours, which means it doesn’t impact weekends and the dinner rush. “It’s a good time for them to be doing it, for us,” he said. Frustaci said he is choosing to focus on the positives. In addition to the roadwork, the project includes sidewalk replacement, a decorative pedestrian plaza at the intersection of Delta and Bridge streets, decorative stamped/coloured pedestrian crosswalks at intersections, new landscaping areas that include irrigation, new street lights as well as bike racks, benches, decorative bollards, banner poles and garbage/recycling receptacles.

Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed use. South Delta house prices rise again in January Tsawwassen up 2.5% to reach $1.04 million SANDOR GYARMATI

House prices continue their dizzying upward climb in Delta, especially in Tsawwassen. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver’s latest numbers show residential property sales in Greater Vancouver for January were up 31.7 per cent from the sales recorded in January 2015, but a decline of almost an 11 per cent from December’s activity. The so-called “benchmark price” for a singledetached house in Tsawwassen, however, didn’t take a step back, increasing 2.5 per cent over the previous month to reach $1,047,200. It’s also a whopping 37.8 per cent increase over January 2015, the biggest jump among all the communities covered by the Greater Vancouver Real Estate Board. The price of a detached house in Ladner was almost unchanged, sitting at a benchmark of

Last year’s red hot real estate market in South Delta isn’t showing any signs of slowing down in 2016. $868,600. That price represents an increase of 30.6 per cent over the previous year, among the top gains in Greater Vancouver. Condos and townhomes in South Delta were another story as they saw small decreases over the previous month, with the exception of Ladner condos that saw a modest increase. As far as North Delta, the Fraser Valley real estate market showed no signs of slowing down, producing the strong-

est sales for January on record, according to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board. That board listed the benchmark for a single detached house in North Delta at $721,600. It also lists an “average price” that had North Delta at $816,299, an increase of almost 40 per cent over the previous year. As in South Delta, the price of townhomes and condos slipped slightly in North Delta from the previous month.

Auxiliary helps hospital care for spiritual health JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

There is a new face around Delta Hospital these days and she is there to help make patient visits a little easier. Spiritual health practitioner Marilyn Chan joined the hospital last fall. “Really we’re here to promote emotional and spiritual health,” Chan said, adding she is there to support patients and their loved ones during those dark moments that can come with a hospital stay. She is at the hospital three days a week thanks to funding from the Delta Hospital Auxiliary. “The auxiliary believes that spiritual care is an important part of healing and wellness,” said president Robbi Schultes. “She is so wonderful and supportive,” Schultes said. “It adds so much to the comfort of the patients and their families.” Chan also lends support to staff at the hospital. She was the pastor at a church in Richmond before being drawn to

What she does on a day-to-day basis at the hospital isn’t solely based on religion. Chan and Philip Murray, spiritual health leader with Fraser Health, said the role of a spiritual health practitioner is not to force religion on a patient and their family. “As health care professionals, we view spirituality as being a universal

experience,” Murray said. “It’s that inherent part of each person.” If a patient is religious, Chan is able to steer her work with them in that direction. If not, Chan said she is still able to offer comfort and support in a non-religious manner and interact with people from all walks of life. While the role of religion can help, it’s not necessary, she said.

emporary is a relative term, but this is really stretching things. When the Delta Museum opened its doors for the first time back in 1969, it did so in the building that had served as Delta’s municipal hall for the previous half-century. Already 57 years old and not configured to house such an institution, the Delta Street structure was considered a temporary home for the museum, the pride of the fledgling Delta Historical Society. Fast-forward 47 years and it’s still in that temporary home, although that won’t be the case for much longer. Set to close its doors to the public by the end of the month and fully vacate the building by summer, the museum will finally bid farewell to the historic accommodations that never really suited its purposes. Its future is still being discussed behind closed doors, although there are assurances from Delta the museum will have a new home come 2017. It’s curious that at no point over almost half a century since the museum was founded in its temporary digs has finding a permanent home become priority No. 1. The community has grown significantly over that time and we’ve seen countless public amenities — everything from swimming pools and ice rinks to schools and community centres to a hospital and a new municipal hall — built to accommodate that growth, yet the museum has stayed put in cramped, outdated quarters. This lack of action doesn’t fall entirely on the shoulders of those at the Corporation of Delta as the museum board hasn’t undertaken a capital campaign like has been the case with local organizations such as Reach, Boys and Girls Club, Delta Hospice and others. Still, the municipality has the deepest pockets and given we’re talking about preserving and showcasing Delta’s history, it’s incumbent on municipal hall to play a major role in the establishment of any new facility. As far as a new home is concerned, the betting is that we’ll follow a similar pattern and the museum will, ironically enough, be relocated to another former municipal hall, this one in Ladner’s civic precinct. Hopefully it’s deemed suitable as a permanent site because it’s well past time that we put the whole temporary thing to bed.

The ‘fix’ was in long before new crossing announced

A

couple of weeks ago the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project team hosted a one-day display of what the new bridge would look like. This followed public forums in 2012 and 2013 where five scenarios were proposed. Three of those called for the tunnel to remain. I can echo many by saying the bridge — in isolation — looks good. However, there are caveats. Six months after the consultation in 2013, the premier announced a 10-lane bridge. Curious about how we got there from the five choices, I asked what information the premier had when she made the announcement. I had to file a formal freedom of information request (FOI) with the premier’s office, asking for reports and analysis that allowed her to make the announcement. The response came back: “Although a thorough search was conducted, no records were located in response to your request.” Getting nothing from that source, I then asked the project team. How does the cost for a 10-lane bridge compare with fixing the tunnel and adding another tunnel or bridge? “It was a wash [same cost],” they told me.

Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON

“Do you have the numbers?” I asked. “No, it was high level,” they replied. So I asked, “Well, how about the notes from the discussion and analysis?” “No notes were taken,” they replied. The premier’s response was the subject of a question in the legislature by our MLA, Vicki Huntington, last November. The government did not answer; sadly, it just ridiculed the question. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone recently stated in this paper, “We thoroughly reviewed all the benefits of all options.” He went on to say, “a bridge will be ...more cost effective than a replacement tunnel.” Where is this analysis? If it exists, was it done before or after the premier’s announcement?

Who has their facts straight? In 2006, several government organizations from Canada, B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, along with TransLink, YVR and railways, created the Pacific Gateway Action Pan that called for dredging the Fraser River — deeper — which means remove the tunnel. In February 2012 — before the public consultations noted above — the B.C. government met with several others, including Port Metro Vancouver, to plan the strategy for the removal of the George Massey Tunnel. The premier really didn’t need a briefing — the decision had been made years earlier. Why didn’t she say this when making the announcement? Why were we misled in the public consultations? The tunnel’s stability to withstand earthquakes has not been properly assessed. Will the bridge towers withstand an earthquake without wobbling about and collapsing the entire bridge superstructure? If the tunnel is to be removed, then let the port pay fees for the ships transiting the river — just like the Panama Canal. Final fundraising push in radio towers battle

Editor: Many thanks to the people of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts who stayed united in supporting our cause with thousands of volunteer hours providing research, petitions, letters to the editor, ads prodding politicians, gifts and cash donations over almost three years that have made it possible to raise over $220,000 US. These valued contributions by so many allowed us to fight the KRPI radio towers before the Whatcom County hearing examiner, county council and Washington State Superior Court as well as before the FCC in Washington, DC. After so much money and so many volunteer hours of effort were

expended, finally, the cohorts of David have beaten Goliath. No radio towers will be built near our border now or in the future. What an amazing international cross-border accomplishment. However, this chapter in cross-border cooperation is not quite closed. We have lawyers’ bills in the amount of approximately $14,000 US that still need payment. To help us clear the debt everyone in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts is invited to our Cross Border Victory Celebration and fundraiser at the Reef Tavern in Point Roberts from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. We will dance the night away with The Neon Stars playing vintage country music

and several other excellent entertainers. We will raffle off a 50-inch flat screen Smart TV and sound system valued at $900 plus more fun and entertainment than we can possibly list here. Watch for our posters and future announcements. If you are unable to attend the victory party, please express your appreciation and continue your support by making a donation to help us clear this debt. You can do so at: www.NoTowers.webs. com via PayPal or by using a credit card. Or, please mail a cheque to: PRTAFTT, P.O. Box 158, Point Roberts, WA, 98281. Don’t take province’s word for it as bridge is a $3.5 billion boondoggle

Editor: Re: Who benefits from a bridge?, Feb. 5 This article suggests the George Massey Tunnel “can no longer handle traffic volumes and doesn’t meet seismic standards.” Neither of these ideas should go unquestioned. Traffic volumes have declined slightly over the last decade, so the tunnel should be considered slightly more adequate to handle the traffic than a decade ago. And everyone knows you can’t build

your way out of congestion anyways. Only good public transit makes mobility across larger urban regions tolerable (and sometimes even pleasant). As for “seismic standards,” the tunnel was earthquake strengthened and an advance warning system installed in 2006. Has your neighbourhood school, community centre and hospital been earthquake strengthened and an earthquake warning system installed yet? Moving on to the next

stage of seismic upgrades on the tunnel is a good investment, but is not more urgent than safety in schools. Lower Mainland residents need to speak out against the $3.5 billion Massey Bridge boondoggle. Our precious public funds are much better spent on more buses running along the Highway 99 bus lanes and through the tunnel, as well as making schools safe places for children. Eric Doherty

Property taxes rising faster than inflation

Editor: Re: Property tax bill up 3.5%, Feb. 3 Is anyone anywhere surprised by the inability of Delta council and its lackluster management staff to keep spending in check? Every year they come cap in hand floating a budgetary trial balloon under cover of the canard that we’re in great shape since Delta’s increase is not as bad as some of the other under-performing municipal governments. Here’s a news flash, Mayor Lois Jackson: being in the top half of a very mediocre lot is not an

accomplishment. Since 2000, my property taxes have increased by well over 100 per cent. What I charge my customers has remained constant or declined over the same period. I suspect many others are in the same boat. In this volatile and uncertain environment, why is it that these people are incapable of holding spending in check, never mind reducing it? Is it that they’ve already wrung every efficiency out of the municipal operation? Even the most casual observer of municipal work projects knows that’s

a process that’s never even been on the radar for these folks. This year’s 3.5 per cent increase is a huge 219 per cent more than the 2015 Canadian rate of inflation. At a time when the cost of fuel is dropping like a stone along with the country’s overall economic prospects, we expect reductions, not increases. Personally, I’m sick to death of the firing-offence performance of these unaccomplished career politicians we grudgingly restore to office every three years. They need to do better or step aside. Doug Floer

Blaming victims of crime is not the answer

Editor: Re: Fine those who invite property crime, letter to the editor, Feb. 5 I really felt I had to respond to the letter from Jeff Stack about fining people for failing to lock their cars or homes or leaving items in plain view in their cars. Although, of course, it is unwise to leave something you value unattended, it is

always the fault of the thief and never the victim. I think our culture needs to move away from victim blaming. After all, if someone steals the plants from my garden, is it really my fault for putting them out there? No, of course not. We all need to feel safe where we live, and the fact most of us do, even though it may sometimes cause us to be victims of crime, is a

big part of what allows us to enjoy that small-town feel that we all love. Living fully involves risk. I am not suggesting we all leave large piles of money on our sidewalks but please don’t blame the victims of crime. As a reformed thief myself, that’s exactly the sort of thing I used to tell myself — and it’s garbage. Flower Pearson

Council still spinning its wheels on waterfront

Editor: Re: Silent majority needs to speak up for Ladner, letter to the editor, Feb. 5 We couldn’t agree more with Andrea Frustaci’s letter. His comments are both timely and poignant. We have lived in Tsawwassen and Ladner since 1990 and for the past 26 years have been exposed to numerous press releases by councils emphasizing the need to

develop the waterfront. As well, councils have commissioned X number of consultants’ studies and reports on the subject. Yet, here we are in 2016 awaiting another study and report, complete with recommendations. While councils, to their credit, have used port money to purchase two invaluable waterfront properties, both properties have remained empty and become an eyesore.

This situation has been exacerbated now that the sites have seemingly been turned into municipal maintenance and storage facilities, which greatly detract from a beautiful waterfront. How much time and public money needs to be spent spinning wheels rather than developing what could and should be prized assets? George and Carolina Rooney

Find The Perfect Canada has backed away Valentine’s Day Gift at Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall PLUS Free In-Store Treats February 13th & 14th!

Editor: A new star has burst on Ottawa’s political stage, a star that has emerged from the Liberal NeverNever-Land of bringing peace and happiness to the world, leading us to a magic place where all our dreams will come true and remain happily imaginable by the pixie dust sprinkled about by Justin Trudeau, the newly arrived Peter Pan of Canadian politics. With Canada’s CF-18 jets coming “home,” it’s the old Liberal “soft power” ascending, and nowhere in the new feel-good Trudeau era of “sunny ways” has

there been much, if anything, in the way of constructive indication as to what can and should be done as a consequence to the explosive surge of global terrorism. Instead, the Liberals’ voices of isolationism, neutrality, pacifism and appeasement demonstrate yet again that no freedom is so outrageously and so often abused as the freedom to do little or nothing. Far from Canada doing its part in the fight against the unrelenting wave of terror and criminal outrage perpetrated by the likes of ISIL, al-Qaeda and

others, domestic electoral diaspora politics masquerading as foreign policy commitments might have worked at the polls at home to score political points and help the Liberals to get elected, but do very little good in the trenches. Instead of rendering ourselves irrelevant to both friend and foe alike in a world that respects only strength and resolution, we should walk solid and follow the foreign policy spirit of Teddy Roosevelt: “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” E.W. Tunnel not seismic risk suggested

www.TsawwassenTownCentreMall.com

Editor: Re: Delta open for business, Feb. 3 Delta CAO George Harvie is quoted as saying “any kind of seismic problem” could ruin the George Massey Tunnel. He should have finished his statement by saying any earthquake that was strong enough to render the tunnel inoperable would

also destroy the highways leading to and from it and any buildings or other crossings within the lower Fraser Valley delta. The tunnel comprises six steel-reinforced concrete elements weighing some 18,500 tons, each joined together with huge hydraulic jacks and sealed to a hydrostatic pressure of 3,500 tons, making it into one solid 111,000ton structure joined to approach towers on either end that were anchored deep into the ground. Further in 2006, $20

million was spent to install massive “butterflyshaped” iron plates that reinforced the tunnel sections in case of an earthquake. A “Shakeproof” system was also installed and is capable of shutting the tunnel down if there’s any sign of seismic activity in the area. One has to wonder how much safer a bridge would be if an earthquake was to happen. Just thought these facts should be stated to offset misleading statements. Douglas George Massey

Eliminating bias is a misguided effort

Editor: Re: Taking bias out of policing, Feb. 5 Since when did the Delta Police Department surrender to the shrill voices of hypersensitive demagogues? No matter how closely the composition of a police force corresponds to a variegated community, like Delta, there will always be some wretches, usually with an inexplicable hatred of all authority and political motives, making false claims of police persecution. As a resident of Delta my whole life, I am embarrassed that our police are undergoing remedial

indoctrination over something pretersensual. Some scoundrel is trying to create mischief to besmirch the force. This is not Ferguson, Missouri, and we must reject the propaganda of fiendish racial antagonists. The notion of inadvertent bias is similar to the disquieting concept of “micro-aggression” where any words, gestures or facial expression while conversing with a person of another race, no matter how polite, can be interpreted as a slur. Two weeks ago a couple of Delta police officers visited my building, knocked on my door and inquired

about my neighbour. One officer was Punjabi and the other was black. They were polite to me and I politely answered their questions. I admit I was slightly nervous because I had not spoken to a police officer in the course of duty in a very long time. Race was totally irrelevant in this event. Did I commit a “micro-aggression” upon these decent men? There are racists in all walks of life in every nation. In pluralistic nations like Canada there will inevitably be conflicts and misunderstandings between different groups. Whoever concocted the myth of racial profiling,

I presume, must have believed only white people are racist. If a black police officer arbitrarily stops a Chinese motorist for speeding, does that constitute racial profiling? The danger of policies designed to eliminate perceived prejudice in law enforcement is they may have the effect of insulating minority communities and thwarting investigations into alleged criminal activity simply because “that’s part of their culture or religion.” Victims will feel helpless and trapped due to the reluctance of police to act for fear of negative public reaction. Better things for police to do than attend psychobabble seminar Editor: Re: Taking bias out of policing, Feb. 5 Instead of sending members of the Delta Police Department to yet another psychobabble

Seven First Nations to receive 2016 Heritage Award of Merit SANDOR GYARMATI

Several First Nations, a group involved with the preservation of a historic house, a Delta man who started a unique Facebook page as well as a local resident who has been painstakingly restoring old photographs are this year’s recipients of Delta’s heritage awards. Every February, through its heritage advisory commission, Delta marks Heritage Week (Feb. 15 to 21) by presenting its Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage Awards. The commission accepts nominations throughout the year for awards to be presented the following year. The Heritage Award of Merit is conferred to projects, individuals or groups for their contribution in conserving a valuable part of Delta’s history. Awards may be granted to projects in the area of preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive re-use and may be considered for their exterior or interior characteristics. At Delta council’s regular meeting on Monday, Mayor Lois Jackson will present the 2016 Heritage Award of Merit to seven First Nations — Tsawwassen First Nation, Musqueam First Nation, Katzie First Nation, Kwantlen First Nation,

Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Semiahmoo First Nation and the Kwikwetlem First Nation — that have worked closely with the provincial government to create a “recognition area” at the foot of the Alex Fraser Bridge. Some of the oldest archaeological finds, representing First Nations activity estimated to be 9,500 years old, have been discovered there. Friends of Heritage

Awards are conferred to a project, individual or group that promotes heritage conservation and awareness in the areas of education, publication or advocacy. Recipients of a Friends of Heritage Award include the Boundary Bay Park Association, formerly the Cammidge House Committee, for its work promoting heritage through activities at the historic home in Boundary

Bay Regional Park. Rick Pelletier will receive an award for his heritage restorations and installations at buildings at Hawthorne Park, while Gary Cullen will be recognized for promoting interest and awareness of local heritage through his Facebook group called Tsawwassen Old Photos. The mayor will also announce the recipient of a Heritage Award Scholarship.

Doberman Pinscher/Rottweiler Mix Breed, Black and Tan, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 3 years old) Meet Sasha! She has had a huge adventure to get her to Delta. She originates from a pretty hard life in a community near Hazelton, BC. Volunteers got her to the Kitimat Humane Society who then helped her get down to us so she can find a forever family! Sasha is 3 years young and spent a lot of her life having babies, roaming unsupervised or being tethered outside. She is a high energy, unmannered dog who LOVES affection. She is very sweet and just needs some guidance! Her ideal home is one where she can be the “apple of your eye” (no other dogs, cats or small animals) Teen children who are interested in participating with her training would also be OK. She is active so would do great in a home that is super active (hiking, running etc) Our traffic and busy shelter is a hard adjustment for her but Sasha is going to make an excellent companion for someone - and after her rough start to life she really deserves it!

Grade 5 student Nicola Schmidt is now able to use the playground along with her friends.

Nicola Schmidt is a big part of her school community. The Grade 5 student at South Park Elementary is highly involved with many school activities and can regularly be seen happily playing with her friends. Last year, however, her friends started to play a game on the playground and that is when Nicola realized she could not use much of the equipment. “My wheelchair would get stuck in the woodchips surrounding the playground and there weren’t the proper grips to allow me to pull myself up onto the play structures,” she explained. “I thought, ‘I want the playground to be more accessible so I can play too.’” Nicola decided to talk to principal Elaine Greenhalgh about her concerns. Greenhalgh contacted school district staff members who were eager to help. “I spoke with John Vantol, our manager of maintenance services, and he came out to the school to personally meet with Nicola to see what possible solutions there might be,” said Greenhalgh. “Nicola commented on how much she appreciated the time John spent with her, listening to her thoughts and concerns. Together, Nicola and John came up with a plan.”

The plan included creating a paved pathway for her to access the playground, a bar at the slide and adding handles in several locations to enable Nicola to pull herself from her wheelchair and up onto the playground equipment. The additional parts for the playground were paid for by the special programs department at the school district and the installation costs were provided in-kind by the maintenance department. When the maintenance staff came to the school to install the equipment, they made sure to include Nicola in the process. “The school and maintenance staff made it a priority,” said Kim Klewchuk, Nicola’s mom. “They met with Nicola and involved her in the design and installation. The entire school community is excited about it. The support has been incredible.” As a result of the upgrades to the playground, Nicola can now play with her friends. “I wish you could have heard Nicola come home one day and explain the improvements,” said Randy Schmidt, Nicola’s dad. “Her face just lit up as she described how she can now access the equipment more easily, and join the other kids.”

The Network to Eliminate Violence in Relationships is joining activists from around the world today to host a One Billion Rising Revolution rally in Delta. “The underreporting of domestic violence is a huge problem,” said organizer Dr. Balbir Gurm. “We hope members of the community will join with us at this event to show support and spread the word that domestic violence is not OK. We hope this event can build a stronger community that will support victims

of domestic violence and empower them to stand up and speak out.” The One Billion Rising Campaign began as a call to action based on the United Nations’ statistic that one in three women on the planet will be physically, sexually, psychologically and/or financially abused in her lifetime. That equals one billion women. One Billion Rising aims to make violence against women a global human issue, not one just relegated to country or tribe or class or religion.

This year, survivors of violence will tell their personal stories about how violence has impacted their lives. Representatives from all levels of government and many others will show their support and speak out against violence against women. Delta’s rally, which is being hosted by NEVR, Delta police, the Corporation of Delta and Kwantlen Polytechnic University, takes places from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Firehall Centre for the Arts (11489-84th Ave., North Delta).

While the origins of Valentine’s Day are uncertain, the legends seem to agree on one thing — that a person by the name of Valentine was martyred as a result of his love for God. In our egocentric culture, we may no longer like to talk about it, but sacrifice is at the heart of life and certainly the heart of any committed romantic or spiritual relationship. Whether you choose to celebrate with flowers, cards or candy, or not at all, may your relationships bring more love and kindness and healing into world — Happy Valentine’s Day!

For some, Valentine’s Day is a time for gifts and grand gestures of appreciation, while others find hearts and stuffed animals more cringe-worthy than cute. Regardless of where you fall on the spectrum, part of what makes life worth living is our passion, our desire to be in relationship — with our beloveds, with nature, with the divine. Our longing for love is an admission that we are incomplete in and of ourselves. We are healed or made whole only in relationship with others. We read in the Bible that “God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16) To abide in love is to celebrate life — the taste of a beautiful meal, the soft fur of a devoted pet, the fragrance of a rose. Local groups get gaming grants

Four local service organization are receiving over $150,000 in community gaming grants from the provincial government, Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton announced this week. The recipients include: • Delta Hospice Society — $90,000 • North Delta Rotary Club — $34,000 • Tsawwassen Order of Old Bastards — $22,000

• Lions Club of Delta Scottsdale — $7,500 “Each of these groups deserve a tremendous amount of gratitude for the different kinds of services they provide throughout Delta,” said Hamilton. “They help form the caring fabric of our community.” Delta Hospice offers support for people with the diagnosis of cancer or other serious illness and extends care through to

the late stage of advanced illness. It also helps families and friends cope with caregiving and grief. The TOOBs support the residents of South Delta, aiming to assist the young, the elderly, and other individuals or organizations in need, according to treasurer Alastair Ross. “Towards this end, we raise funds for our own endeavours and use the grant to supplement many

of our programs,” Ross says. The Community Gaming Grant Program allows non-profit organizations to apply for provincial gaming revenues from the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Organizations interested in applying for grants can find full application information at pssg.gov.bc.ca/ gaming.

sawwassen singer/songwriter Christine Magee is putting together a fundraising concert to benefit the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Matters of the Heart, set for Saturday, Feb. 20 in Ladner, came about after she received a vision from God, she says. It involved pumps, as in women’s shoes, she explains. “Then all off a sudden I was led to the conclusion that I need to do something with pumps, as in the heart pumping,” she says. “I put the two words together and it made me want to do this concert for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. When God gives you a vision, you don’t want to give up on that vision.” She’ll be joined at the fundraising concert by fellow singer/songwriters Michael Hart, Erik Ioannidis and Shylo Sharity. “These three artists are good friends of mine,” Magee says. Hart is described as a gifted songwriter and guitar player who performs original songs and intricate instrumentals. Ioannidis is a RichCity Idol winner, sang during the Olympic celebrations at the Richmond O Zone and played the lead role of Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Theatre Under the Stars. Sharity won B.C.’s Variety’s Got Talent competition in 2011, which resulted in opening for Wynonna Judd and a performance at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. “We’re going to be singing a lot of songs about love and about the heart itself. Because it’s Heart Month we want to celebrate that,” Magee says. The concert is set for 7 p.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave., Ladner. Tickets will be available at the door, online at www.vtixonline. com or by calling Dawn at 604-943-8094. Tickets are also available at Albany Books, 1240-56th St., Tsawwassen, and Fancy This Gifts, 5044-48th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $20 for adults (19 and up) and $15 for youth.

Exploring Grenada one step at a time JANE CASSIE

A

Optimist contributor

lthough hiking boots weren’t on my packing list when making plans for my trip to Grenada, they sure would have come in handy while hiking the hills in Grand Etang National Park. Red volcanic slime squishes under the soles of my white Nikes and I slither along while mastering nature’s stairwell that descends into the depths of the forest. A network of protruding roots and giant rain puddles need to be frequently navigated, and steep-sided slopes, falling away to no-man’s land, demand some fancy footwork. My hands feel clammy, heart rate does double time and sweat drips from my brow. Although it could be due to the

humidity that hangs heavily in the air, my gut feeling says it’s sheer fear factor. “No worries, Ma’am. I’ll lead you down, safe and sound,” my guide, Paul, says with an optimistic sense of calm. “Just follow me, in the steps of righteousness,” he bellows out, then belly laughs at the creation of his original gospel tune. The singing continues and, while easing my tension, we plod on. The people of Grenada all seem to have these spirited gifts. Maybe it stems from the love they feel for their country and the relaxed lifestyles they share. The paradisiacal island (pronounced gre-NAY-da) is located in the Eastern Caribbean, just 150 kilometres north of Venezuela. It boasts 440 picturesque square kilometres, onesixth of which is preserved as parks and natural wild-

life sanctuaries. As well as being the island’s central focal point, Grand Etang National Park is home to an expansive lake in a volcanic crater and to numerous hikes, such as this one, leading to Seven Sisters Waterfalls. For over three decades, Henry’s Safari Tours have been instrumental in literally leading the way through the dense tropical rainforests and as I discover during this journey, our guide’s easy rhythms are matched by his skilled leadership. Paul shares his vast knowledge of the abundant flora that embraces our route, and rattles off the names of tropical flowers as if they were his best friends. Towering mahoganies and giant gommier trees unite with broad-leafed ferns and vine-draped Fijis. Bunches of bamboo shoot skyward like piles of pick-up sticks,

trunks of banyan trees fan out like well-played accordions and countless towering palm fronds billow above in the sultry breeze. As well as hosting opossums, armadillos, mongoose and Mona monkeys, the lush vegetation provides shelter for frogs and chameleon-like lizards. Although we aren’t privy to any sightings today, Paul’s authentic cries of the wild are certainly close enough for my liking. There’s a special hush about the rainforest that infuses an inner peace, a definite tranquillity and oneness with nature, and during the trek I feel a sense of wonder, and the realization that I’m just a small part of this picture. We saunter on in our own quiet thoughts, and in just under an hour, we reach our aquatic oasis. Clear emerald water funnels through a narrow gorge and plunges from a steep precipice, into the white frothy pool. The torrent cascades over a second, smaller rocky outcropping, before spilling into another pond where I’m lured in for a dip. Other than a school of tiny fish, there are no intruders. It’s truly a place that epitomizes paradise. Included in this tour package is a basket lunch which Paul splays out

We picnic on river boulders and, in silence, reflect on the surrounding beauty. Sunshine filters through the overgrowth and glistens off the clear plunge pools. Multihued birds twitter from forest flora. The sounds and smells of

Removing burlap helps dogwoods flourish

ANNE MARRISON

This week I answer questions from readers: Q: I planted a redbud and a pink dogwood two years ago but they don’t seem to be growing at all. I planted the trees in large, deep holes with peat moss and bone meal. I left the burlap sacks on which may have been a mistake. The redbud had a few flowers last spring and not many leaves. Some limb offshoots were dried out and dead. The dogwood bloomed nicely but the leaves seemed mottled and lifeless all summer. I did water them a fair amount last summer. What can I do to ensure

do it for you. Q: I have a pink and a purple calla lily overwintering in the garage and some sprouts are starting to show on them. Both clumps are about five or six inches across. Should I divide them into smaller pieces? I’d like to give them an early start inside the house, but I’m not sure when to bring them in. A: It’s really best to divide your calla lilies in fall before you bring them

in. But people in warmer climates where callas grow outside all year round usually divide them in spring. Like all bulb and tuberous plants, callas are quite resilient. The important thing is to divide them before they start flowering. Since your clumps have got quite big, they really need to be divided before flowers start to get fewer. So I’d say go ahead and divide them as soon as

possible before the sprouts develop any more. Smaller pieces are a good idea, but it’s best if each of the new clumps contains a few bulbs. Right now is a good time to bring your calla lilies inside to give them an early start. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. It helps if you mention your city or region.

Pacers rain threes on #2 Storm

Delta poised to clinch first place and host league playoffs after big upset win MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Cam Show misfired for the Carolina Panthers on Super Bowl Sunday but the Delta Pacers’ own version certainly didn’t on Tuesday night. Grade 11 wings Cam Ratzlaff and Cam Gray combined for an astonishing nine three-pointers in the first quarter alone to send the Pacers on their way to an 89-82 upset win over No. 2 ranked Southridge Storm. The result means Delta (7-1) just needs to win one of its final two games to lock-up first place in the Fraser Valley AAA West and host the upcoming league playoff tournament. The Pacers were slated to visit winless Elgin Park last night and will close out their regular season schedule Monday when Frank Hurt (2-5) visits at 7:30 p.m. The Storm came to Ladner as one of the top teams in the province, never mind at the AAA level. The South Surrey school beat No. 2 AAAA Churchill earlier this season to win the Tsumura Invitational and rolled to a 35-point victory over honourable mention Vancouver College 10 days ago. However, Southridge was ambushed by a shooting display likely never seen before in the DSS gym. By the time the Storm starting paying attention to the open looks for Gray and Ratzlaff, the pair had helped Delta roll out to a huge 34-15 lead after one quarter. All but two of the Pacers’ baskets came from beyond the arc as they promptly wiped out an early 7-0 Storm lead. “I don’t think I have ever seen 10 threes in a quarter before,” said Pacers head coach David Craig. “I thought they would be getting out on our guys a little quicker

and then they went to zone which shocked me. We just lit it up. It played into our hands but I don’t think they believed we could keep shooting that well.” Delta took a 74-47 lead into the final quarter and the Storm went on a 17-6 run in the late going to cut the margin to single digits. The Pacers did an effective job with their defensive rotation to take space away from Southridge standout Hunter Hughes who was limited to eight points in the pivotal opening half. Delta’s own star — Jas Singh — had a productive night with 31 points, including five treys of his own. However, the performance was a complete team effort with Gray and Ratzlaff (22 points each) supplying critical secondary scoring, while others, such as Grade 11 Dylan Bubel, provided terrific minutes off the bench and chipped in with 10. “He’s always in the right place at the right time,” added Craig of his key Grade 11 sixth man. “His minutes are really important. It’s guys like him who make it fun (doing this).” The league playoff tournament would start Feb 23 and mark the second straight season Delta has earned the right to host the event. Last season, the Pacers did it at the AAAA level but had a tough time with home court advantage. Craig will remind his players of that but likes how his team is positioning itself towards earning a provincial tournament berth. “We would be playing the eighth seed (in the first round) then the winners of the 4/5 game in the semi-finals,” said Craig. “It gives us a good chance to be one of the top seeds at the Fraser Valleys (Championships) and we get to do it at home. The rims are generous and our kids like shooting in here.”

Footmen end great year with silver at provincials

Delta Footmen fell 6-4 to rival New West in Monday’s gold medal game at the provincial tier 1 field lacrosse championships in Langley.

Delta Footmen capped an outstanding season with a silver medal at the U15 Tier 1 Provincial Field Lacrossse Championships in Langley over the long weekend. The Footmen entered the tournament as the team to beat after an unbeaten run (10-3-0) through regular season play in the Pacific Coast Field Lacrosse League. Delta then proceeded to win two of three round-robin games to earn a semifinal berth where it rolled to a 14-6 win over Ridge Meadows. That set the stage for Monday’s gold medal showdown with the New West Salmonbellies on a glorious spring-like afternoon. The Footmen had edged their rivals 5-4 in earlier play and also produced a 10-1 win in their final league game to lock up first place. Delta jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Max Stalling and Mitch Sandberg, before the ’Bellies answered with two of their own before halftime. New West then capitalized on a man advantage to take the lead and would never trail again, relying on some solid goaltending to win 6-4. Niel Bains and Mark Yingling had the other goals. The locals had earlier opened play with a 14-8 win over Pacific Rim from Victoria. Jake Cantlon led the way with five goals. Haiden Dickson added a hat trick, while Yingling and Stalling had two each.

The narrow victory against New West featured two more goals from Canton. Delta then was on the short end of a 7-5 upset loss to Mission as penalty trouble proved to be its undoing. Dickson scored twice in a losing cause. Cantlon led the charge in the semifinal triumph over Ridge with four more goals. Dickson added three and Dean Kishuichi chipped in with a pair. It was a solid game at the back end for the Footmen with excellent defensive work from Jared Molici, James Greig, Jon Greig, Rory Trevorrow, John Woodward and Zack Kyriacethys, while Jackson McLeod made some outstanding saves. The Footmen’s roster also features Arjan Singh, Owen Borthwick and Mitch Godlongton. The team is coached by Ross Frehlick, Josh Neumann, Dereck Murrell and Garrett Brown, with Jeff Stalling serving as team manager. Player of the Game Awards went to Stalling, Dickson, Kishuichi, Sandberg and Cantlon, who was also named MVP of the tournament. Stalling received the Fair Play Award. The Footmen’s standing in field lacrosse is rising, evident by the club’s U18 Tier 1 and U15 Tier 2 teams finishing fourth overall in their respective divisions on the weekend. Joseph DeBaughn picked up U15 Tier 2 MVP honours while Kieran McKay earned a U18 Fair Play Award.

In Loving Memory of

Miriam Alice Forbes

June 21, 1932 - February 13, 2013

Gone but not forgotten We often think of by gone days when we were all together. The Family Chain is broken now but memories will live forever. To us she has not gone away Nor has she traveled far Just entered into heaven and left the gate ajar. We miss you !! Love your Husband , children , grand children , great grand children and extended family...

OBITUARIES

Helen was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1924 to William and Annie Beamish, the 6th of their 11 children. At the age of 19, she met and married Bill Graham, a young RAF pilot from England, who was training in Moose Jaw during the war. After they recovered from being injured in a tornado on their honeymoon, Bill and Helen left Moose Jaw and moved to Bill’s family home in Newcastle, England. Once Bill completed his university studies, they moved to Ireland where their first son was born, then later settled in Saskatoon where their family grew to include another son and two daughters. In 1963, the family moved to Vancouver. Throughout her life, Helen’s greatest joys came from her family, her faith (and involvement at Granville Chapel and Tsawwassen Alliance Church) and from her love of antique doll collecting. Helen is survived and will be greatly missed by her four children; Christopher Graham (Kathy), David Graham (Myra), Sheila Graham and Susan Shumka (James). She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Alison (Scott), Heather (Mustafa), Will, David, Trevor, Adam, Eadington and Lewis, two great-grandchildren, Camden and Liam, as well as her sisters-in-law, brother-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2014, her granddaughter Kate in 2006, and all her brothers and sisters. A Memorial Service will be held at Delta Funeral Home in Ladner, BC on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 2:30 PM. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
