Mourning a life cut too short 21-year-old Graeme Carswell of Tsawwassen remembered for enthusiasm, field hockey prowess JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Family, friends and the field hockey community are in shock and mourning after the drowning death of 21-year-old Graeme Carswell last weekend. The Tsawwassen resident and South Delta Secondary grad was fishing with a friend on the banks of the Chilliwack River last Sunday when he fell in and got caught up in the current. “His companion was not able to rescue him and called for help,” the B.C. Coroners Service said in a news release. Chilliwack RCMP and a search and rescue team responded and pulled Carswell from the river several kilometres downstream. He was taken to Chilliwack General Hospital but could not be resuscitated. Carswell is being remembered for his enthusiasm and cheerful disposition as well as his prowess on the field hockey pitch. He had recently returned from playing club hockey for MHC Amstelveen in the Netherlands and had formerly played for the Canadian Under-21 junior national team and the University of Victoria Vikes. He also played for teams in West Vancouver and locally with the Tsawwassen Falcons. “Over the last month I have enjoyed watching Graeme come to our club and start loving hockey again,” Rob Short, a former national team player and captain of the West Vancouver Premier men’s team, said in a statement on the Field Hockey Canada website.

Graeme Carswell was a promising field hockey player who had recently returned from playing in the Netherlands. “He was playing the best hockey of his life,” he said. “Tonight I felt the true feeling of how important my club is to me.” Short and Carswell played together on the Tsawwassen team for two years after Short

returned from playing in Holland for 14 years. Then, just two months ago, Short got a message that Carswell was back from his own stint in the Netherlands and was interested in playing with Short’s current team in West Vancouver.

Carswell joined the team and Short recalled his last conversation with him. It was on Saturday, the day before the accident. He said he was sitting next to Carswell in the locker room as the team celebrated a big win.

Short said the two were talking about Carswell’s excitement about playing for the team. “He was just on top of the world,” Short told the Optimist. “I know he was in a happy place.” DUTCH: see Page 3

The provincial government is moving ahead with plans for a 10-lane, $3.5-billion bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel.

Mayor at odds with peers

Lois Jackson says fellow mayors are trying to torpedo new Fraser River crossing SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

She feels like she’s talking in the wind. That was Mayor Lois Jackson’s assessment of her dealings with fellow mayors who she believes are doing their best to try to torpedo the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. Last week, federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi paid a visit to Vancouver, making a speech at the Vancouver Board of Trade, but the mayors of Surrey and Vancouver dominated the agenda in a meeting with the minister, said Jackson. “When we went to see the federal minister last week, it was the two big mayors, they wanted the big bulk (of infrastructure

money) for their big projects (UBC rapid transit line and Surrey light rail system) and the bridge was not even on the list anywhere. “So I spoke to the minister and said that I was very disappointed it hadn’t been included and I shared with him my concern that we have the Canadian economy rolling here and we need to have better access for transportation of goods on our trade corridor both north and east of the port.” Jackson had already expressed frustration over other mayors in the region wanting to throw cold water on the provincial project, which is not tied to TransLink or dependent on money from the regional district. Last December, when the province

Even though they knew Premier (Christy) Clark had announced the bridge over two years ago, they still refuse to accept the fact that it’s going ahead for all the right reasons. MAYOR LOIS JACKSON

announced more details on the $3.5-billion bridge, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, long having criticized the plan, expressed reservations about the priority to build it, while Surrey Mayor Linda

Hepner suggested the regional mayors’ plan for transit, which failed to win tax funding support in a plebiscite last year, should take precedent. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson had predicted the bridge would mean major congestion in his city. “It’s like I’m talking in the wind and I think there’s a lot more politics at play here than we would like to admit,” said Jackson. “Even though they knew Premier (Christy) Clark had announced the bridge over two years ago, they still refuse to accept the fact that it’s going ahead for all the right reasons.” A recent Metro

Vancouver staff report, which must still go to the board of directors, cited a myriad of concerns and recommends asking the province for a two-month delay. It notes the project definition report does not contain sufficient information on the transportation patterns associated with a new tolled bridge. “They want a twomonth delay, in my opinion, because they want the minister to look at all the other list of things and look at the bridge last, as far as I’m concerned. That’s the only reason why we’re getting that request for the delay at this ninth hour,” Jackson said. She noted there’s not much anyone can do at the Metro board if Vancouver and Surrey vote together.

Dutch team has fond memories of ‘cheerful’ Canadian

CONTINUED from Page 1 Short said that although Carswell hadn’t been with his new team long, his death has hit his fellow players hard. “We’re going to play our hearts out for Graeme.” In addition to playing for MHC Amstelveen, Carswell extended his involvement in the club as a trainer and coach for several of the junior teams

during his time there. He tried out for, and made, the team in 2014. “We have gotten to know Graeme as a friendly and always cheerful man [whose] enthusiasm affected all those around him,” reads a statement posted on the club’s Facebook page. “He did his best to not only learn Dutch, which he did quickly, but also our local culture… He

quickly became an integral and beloved member of our club and will always be remembered fondly.” In addition to field hockey, Carswell also played several sports during his days at SDSS. He played basketball up until Grade 10 and played rugby and soccer until Grade 12. “I was fortunate enough to have coached Graeme in basketball and soc-

cer,” said Brent Sweeney, a teacher and athletics director at the school. “He was an awesome kid and this news is definitely being felt by many of the staff here at the school.” According to the Falcons website, the club is planning on doing something to honour Carswell over the next few weeks. “Graeme was an outstanding young man in

the community with an amazing outlook on life,” the executive committee said in a statement posted on the club’s website. “He was a great friend to many, a coach, mentor, son and brother. His legacy in the community will be acknowledged for years to come and the Falcons would like to thank him for everything he did in the club.”

Jury recommendations focus on mental health

Coronoer’s inquest looks into fatal police shooting JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m s t .c o m

The jury in the coroner’s inquest into the 2012 death of a man following a police stand-off came back with several recommendations earlier this week. The jury delivered its verdict late Tuesday afternoon in Burnaby after hearing more than a week of testimony. Mehrdad Bayrami, 48, died after he was shot by Delta police Const. Jordan MacWilliams outside the Starlight Casino in New Westminster. Following deliberations, the five-person jury came back with a number of recommendations around public awareness and education on mental health, improving access to services and reducing the stigma around mental illness. The jury recommended police services in the province create a system to flag and automatically initiate a review of multiple calls or files relating to

a single person with the goal of initiating intervention, if needed. It was also recommended all police emergency response teams establish a formal agreement with a number of psychologists to support negotiators during incidents. The jury also recommended the Ministry of Health create a directory of mental health early intervention services available to both medical professionals and the public and that the Ministry of Education create a curriculum for kindergarten through to Grade 12 that addresses mental health issues. A coroner’s inquest is usually required when a death occurs while a person is in police custody and involves a jury of between five and seven people and a presiding coroner. The inquest is not a trial to determine guilt, or find fault, but to determine the facts surrounding a death and allow the jury to make recommen-

dations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances. MacWilliams was a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team at the time and was one of several officers that responded to the call of a domestic disturbance at the New West casino on the morning of Nov. 8, 2012. MacWilliams was initially charged with second degree murder following an investigation by the Independent Investigations Office. Last July, the Criminal Justice Branch announced it was staying the charge. A civil suit launched by Bayrami’s daughter was also dismissed late last year. The jury heard from a number of witnesses, including psychologists who had spoken to police negotiators that morning, several officers who were also part of the emergency response team, MacWilliams and Bayrami’s daughter.

There are countless items on the wish list that weigh into the decision, but far more often than not it’s the almighty buck that ultimately determines where you end up. The reason I share the obvious with you, that the real estate market goes a long way to determining the makeup of any community, is what’s on the horizon. In Vancouver and Richmond, cities where both populations and house prices have risen sharply, it’s no coincidence that schools are also being eyed for closure. The math is pretty simple: young families are priced out, so fewer kids are enrolling. Given South Delta was the hottest of all Metro Vancouver real estate markets in 2015, and that a typical Tsawwassen home now goes for more than $1 million, it’s not hard to see where this is headed. That’s why it’s surprising, to say the least, that Delta school district enrollment projections don’t factor house prices into the equation. The real estate market will always have peaks and valleys, so you don’t want to read too much into any shortterm movement, but an upward trend is undeniable, meaning it will only get more difficult to purchase a home. It’s no coincidence that Delta’s student enrollment hit a high water mark way back in 1980 as the post-tunnel building boom, when inexpensive housing attracted thousands south of the river, filled local schools. The building then stopped, or at least slowed considerably, and prices began to push higher, making Delta less and less affordable for those young families as the years went by. The result is we’ve got 3,500 fewer students in the system today than there were 35 years ago, even though the population as a whole has inched higher. We will continue to see the population rise, often through infill projects where one home is replaced by two or more, but will that growth result in additional, or even the same number, of students in our schools? If this new housing approaches or exceeds seven figures, and it surely will, then the answer is no. I’m sure many factors go into enrollment projections, but it seems to me that house prices have to be one of them.

Agriculture is finding its way into K-12 school curriculum

I

t has been said that education is the highest form of human capital. When it comes to education about agriculture, there has always been this kind of debate about whether it should be a vocational or general subject. I am of the view it should be both and about a year ago we had this conversation at the legislature in Victoria. Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton arranged for myself, superintendent Dianne Turner, school board chairperson Laura Dixon and KPU’s Dr. Kent Mullinix to meet with Peter Fassbender, who was minister of education at the time, and Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick. In that meeting we discussed what we were doing in our schools with Project Pickle and described our vision for the future that would see children in our school district exposed to farming and agriculture throughout their K-12 experience in the hopes that some of them would one day pursue jobs in the food economy. Last Saturday I was present at the well-attended Farm Roots Mini-School open house at Boundary Beach Elementary and had some wonderful discussions with local farmers. In attendance were Susan Snow from Snow Farms, Alicia Guichon from Backroads Family Farm Market, Ron Van Marrewyk from Westcoast Vegetables, Southlands neighbour to the

north Brad Semke from Century Group, farmer and councillor Ian Paton, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, district staff and many more. Most importantly, there were kids that are already keen on participating in the program in attendance, and there were families from out of district that are hoping to enroll. I caught up with Paton after the event and asked him what he thought of the work in progress. This is what he had to say: “Where we live, agriculture and farming is huge. Always has been. Over the past few years I have been happy to have been a part of the discussion as to how best to support educational initiatives amongst the farming community. The future looks bright on that front here in Delta and I am looking forward to being a part of the journey.” Dovetailing agriculture and food with regular curriculum is

challenging at times. I visit classes that integrate programming with their math, science, PE and botany classes. For the little guys, it’s just getting out of the classroom and out to the school farms that provides the thrill of the day. A shout out to Denise Unrau for a fine example of creativity in course planning at Delview Secondary. At a meeting on Tuesday, she articulated how she is going to weave agriculture in to her Medieval Ages Social Studies class with her two blocks and 52 Grade 8 students. Agrarianism, serfdom, estate and farm development were all crucial in feeding the masses. Unrau’s kids will use seed charts to plan their farms and taste the product in conjunction with the foods program. When the question arose around tools for the kids, vice principal Mike Annondale, who was also at the meeting, suggested that metal shop would be creating trowels and that wood shop could provide trellises for courtyard expansion and frames for farm expansion. This type of collaboration will ensure there is engagement amongst the kids. They are not only learning something, they are having a lot of fun in a unique environment and that will bode well for them and us in the future. Taxes rise faster than inflation again

Editor: A new year brings many financial adjustments for us to recognize and accept, or at least note. Most consumer prices tend to rise at a rate above the (fictional?) published inflation index. This is reflected either in a cash adjustment, or in many cases a reduction in the food package contents. We have become used, albeit

unwillingly, to this. The officially published Canadian rate of inflation for 2015 has barely reached above 1.5 per cent (do you believe this?) yet the lower Canadian dollar now seems to promise a really significant acceleration. Naturally one of the main results will be pressure for higher wages, but any such adjustment has

been lagging in the last two decades. Most folk have less to pay more. Look just at the cost of housing. The burgeoning cost of bureaucracy and government at many levels seems also uncontrollable. Our politicians award themselves on a leapfrog basis, never content to fall behind the leader. How long can we accept this

type of philosophy? Delta property taxes are now set to exceed the B.C. inflation rate once more. The mayor has already achieved her target of reducing municipal debt by this process. Has she now become hooked on the need for continuing this? Can we afford this? Are we living above our income? Peter Duffey

stayed bridge connecting Sweden to Denmark, with four lanes of traffic and two railway lines, opening on July 1, 2000, cost about CAD $3.9 billion. The proposed 3.3-kilometre Fraser River bridge, replacing the George Massey Tunnel, is estimated to cost CAD $3.5 billion, with no rail line. So a road/rail cable-

stayed bridge over twice as long as the Fraser bridge, with no rail lines, costs only $400 million more. Something is not right here and I have to ask the question: Is the proposed Fraser River bridge nothing more than a goldplated political payout to friends of the government who will win the bidding process?

A small trip down memory lane saw the Canada Line bidding process, which the judge overseeing the failed Susan Heyes lawsuit against TransLink called a “charade.” The Massey Tunnel replacement bridge is beginning to smell like, as Colonel Potter would say, horse pucky. D. Malcolm Johnston

Forward thinking needed in order to get real solutions

Editor: Re: Best solution for congestion is a new bridge, letter to the editor, Feb. 17 Keith Munro, a new 10-lane, $3.5-billion bridge will be a short-term fix at best, so short-term in fact it might be only a few minutes until you arrive at the next traffic jam at south

end of the Oak Street or Knight Street bridges, both of which are four lanes. Are we going to tear them down too and expand them, then maybe start bulldozing houses along Oak Street to widen it too? When will it end? It’s time for the public to demand more forward-

thinking solutions out of our governments that actually provide lasting benefits to communities. With $3.5 billion in play, why hasn’t the possibility of a SkyTrain expansion been explored? Perhaps it could go all the way to White Rock some day with street cars servic-

Liberal foreign policy getting Canada ignored by its allies in the ISIL fight

Editor: It is generally agreed that the first 100 days of a new government set the tone for its administration and reveal to the public just how it will address things of interest to the people and thus the country. We often hear or read of the honeymoon days with respect to a new government. With that in mind, let’s see how Prime

Minister Justin Trudeau and his band of MPs have done during their honeymoon. On the surface, not well as more and more of the campaign promises have been broken or delayed or simply ignored despite the sunny ways promise that the promises would be brought into force immediately upon taking office. Well, that was more

than 100 days ago and still Canada is lost somewhere in the wilderness of confusion, dysfunction and bewilderment; and, alas, ignored by its allies in the ISIL fight. What a comedown from the sunny days of the Conservative government where all the world knew just where Canada stood on any given topic of concern. S.M. Cruickshank

Held hostage

Editor: Why do Ladner and Tsawwassen citizens have to pay a toll on the new bridge? We are held hostage again. We drive west, we end up in the water. We drive south, we end up in Point Roberts. The only way we can go is east. The only non-toll bridge close to us is the Alex Fraser, which always has an accident on it. I believe that Ladner and Tsawwassen homeowners should have a free pass across the new bridge because going anywhere is always the long way around. Wayne Kraan

Opinion

Devil is in budget details

The B.C. government’s budget takes a number of positive steps, but as always, the devil is in the details. I am pleased to see the government continue to reduce both its operating debt and debt-to-GDP ratio. These are important fiscal indicators and there is no doubt we are doing better than other jurisdictions. B.C.’s total debt, however, continues to climb and is expected to be over $71 billion within three years. That $71 billion does not include the projected $3.5 billion cost for the George Massey Tunnel replacement. The government says it will not budget a project until it has received final approval: so right off the bat, the capital debt estimates will see a big jump when the bridge is finally declared a go. Asset sales have apparently been rolled into “miscellaneous” revenue. The government is likely continuing to sell off its assets, although you wouldn’t know it from reading the budget. There is over $2 billion in “miscellaneous” revenue. Did the government have to sell land to balance its budget? We can’t tell because there is no transparency. I welcome the budget

changes that increase the property transfer tax exemptions for citizens and permanent residents who purchase new homes or condos. But affordability will remain a critical issue and many young families in Delta will continue to find it difficult to enter the housing market. The budget offered very little for individuals with limited incomes or who are on income assistance. The proposed increase to assistance rates for persons with disabilities (PWD) does not go far enough and the announcement is misleading at best. The PWD rate increase still leaves people well below the poverty line, despite government claims that B.C. will be “the most progressive place for persons with disabilities.” PWD rates are increas-

ing by $77 a month, but the transportation subsidy program for PWD recipients is being folded into the new increase. So for those who already use that program — worth either $52 or $66 a month — the actual rate increase will be as little as $11. Children are now exempt from MSP premiums, which will particularly benefit single parents on lower incomes. Certainly some lower-income individuals and couples stand to save money, and that is welcome news. However, while the government talks about reducing MSP costs for some, premiums are rising substantially for everyone else. The government is recouping what it stands to lose through MSP relief by increasing premiums on single people earning more than $42,000 by four per cent next year. In addition, couples without children earning more than $45,000 a year, and senior couples earning over $51,000, can expect to pay $20 more a month. While this budget has taken a prudent approach to spending and fiscal management, which I can support, many British Columbians will find once again they have been left behind by their government.

Representatives of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers were privileged to meet with federal cabinet minister Carla Qualtrough last week. The discussion centered on the need to update and modernize the

1984 Ottawa accord that regulates AM frequencies near the U.S./Canada border. It was agreed the regulations now in effect are too narrow and that critical issues of blanketing interference (AM signals disrupt all sorts of electronics, broadband communications, interfere with computer functions and more) and the potential negative effects on health (long term exposure to electromagnetic radiation has been linked to cancer, particularly childhood leukemia) need to be addressed in Health Canada’s Safety Code 6. While the coalition had a three-pronged strategy, including Canadian government intervention and FCC filings, the efforts on the Whatcom County level finally defeated the proposal to erect radio towers in Point Roberts, an unwanted intrusion into our lives. Two-and-a-half years and almost $250,000 were

spent fighting the project because neither the governments of the U.S. nor Canada considered the impacts of blanketing interference and EMR on its neighbouring communities. If successful, the changes to the treaty would ensure that no community on either side of the border would suffer the same challenge that Point Roberts and Tsawwassen have faced. Qualtrough also expressed an interest in attending the upcoming fundraising event, set for Saturday, March 5 at Kiniski’s Reef Tavern in Point Roberts. We’d like to extend an invitation to all our supporters to come, and if you can’t, but would like to help us to retire the final debt, you may donate by credit card on the website or by mail at PRTA/ FTT, P.O. Industrial park proposed adjacent to bog MK Delta holding public information meeting next week in Ladner on plans for 155-acre project JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

MK Delta Lands Group is holding a public open house next week on its proposal for an industrial park on land adjacent to Burns Bog. Company president Joanne Barnett recently provided civic politicians with an update on the proposal for a nine-lot industrial park on the 62-hectare (155-acre) property near the junction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road and Highway 91. Barnett told Delta council the site is ideally located for logistics or distribution centres due to its proximity to Deltaport and Fraser Surrey Docks, Tilbury industrial area, the CN Rail terminal, Vancouver International Airport and the U.S. border. The proposal includes 2.2 million square feet of industrial floor space to be constructed over nine years. Barnett said the development would be worth more than $360 million and once completed

MK Delta is looking to develop an industrial park near the junction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road and Highway 91. would generate $2.5 billion in direct economic benefits, including significant job creation during construction and permanent positions. The agriculturallyzoned parcel is one of several owned by the company adjacent to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area. Barnett

said the company was told that due to the soil conditions, the only viable agricultural option would be a cranberry farm. Coun. Ian Paton said he doesn’t know of the site ever being farmed and added that it is a mystery why it was included in the Agricultural Land Reserve. As part of the proposal,

MK Delta Lands is offering to transfer three other nearby parcels totaling 131 hectares (328 acres) to Delta for inclusion in the conservancy area and is also offering millions for agricultural and highway improvements. MK Delta Lands had been working on a major proposal for a property on

the east side of Highway 91 that included over 1,000 housing units as well as a commercial area. However, that proposal faced significant opposition in the community and was scaled back twice before the company asked Delta to put the application on hold to consider the industrial one.

The Burns Bog Conservation Society is voicing concerns over the new proposal. The society names it as one of several industrial developments threatening “the critical habitats of the Fraser River Delta Ramsar Site.” The plans have also garnered international attention. International Peatland Society president Björn Hånell has expressed concerns over the effect of industrial development near the bog. The International Peatland Society is an international organization that promotes responsible management and wise use of peatlands and peat. In 2012, Burns Bog was declared a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. A public information meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 25 at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner. The open house-style meeting runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Barnett said the company would also look into scheduling a second session in North Delta.

T2 isn’t seeking infrastructure dollars Port Metro Vancouver CEO says proposed container terminal is a private sector funded project SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Port Metro Vancouver is not looking for taxpayer dollars to build Terminal 2. CEO and president Robin Silvester made that assurance following concerns raised about what the port is seeking from the new federal government following a visit by a senior cabinet minister last month Federal Minister of Transport Marc Garneau got a tour of the local port just as the government is being wooed on several fronts for infrastructure funding promised during the last election campaign. He was told the importance of accommodating the flow of trade for the economy, something echoed recently by the Vancouver Board of Trade, which listed the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project as “deserving of federal support.” Against Port Expansion’s Roger Emsley describes that as outrageous. “It hasn’t even gone through the approval process yet, which is another strange thing,” he said. Noting future funding participation would be sought for road and rail projects to help facilitate the efficient movement

of goods, something the government has supported in the past, Silvester said the port would not seek money to build the proposed three-berth container facility. “To be really clear, it’s not for Terminal 2. That is a private sector funded project and others will be funding too,” he said. “Our conversations with the minister were really starting with what is our role, and it’s to facilitate Canada’s trade, to respond to the growth in Canada’s trade, to plan for the infrastructure that will be necessary for Canada to be able to continue to grow those trading relationships and that part of the economy. Our mandate is to do that, mindful of the desires of the community and ensuring protection of the environment.” Their conversation at the highest level all comes from ongoing detailed analysis of transportation needs in the Lower Mainland and in partnership with Transport Canada, TransLink and the province, Silvester explained, who noted the volume of trade through the port has grown substantially in the past five years. “When we then look forward, we see a similar

T2 is a three-berth container terminal proposed adjacent to Deltaport. growth opportunity. Bulk products will be a little bit softer over the next year or two, but over the five-year horizon we see the opportunity for another 30 million tonnes of growth as the growth starts to return in 2018, and we need to plan for the infrastructure

to be able to handle that amongst what is already a growing region.” Projects that would be seen as necessary for infrastructure improvements, Silvester said, include the Sunbury/Nordel interchange at the South Fraser Perimeter Road, which he

said has already reached traffic volumes originally projected for 2020. “Without Terminal 2, without the volumes being nowhere where they’re going to be with Terminal 2, that junction is already congested… because a lot of port traffic moves up

the SFPR, we see that has a priority as well.” Meanwhile, it’s not clear how, or if, the application to build T2 will be affected when the Canadian government unveils new environmental review requirements in the coming weeks. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had promised an overhaul of the assessment process as part of his Liberal platform during last year’s federal election. Emsley said he wonders how the Liberals’ promise to reinstate more stringent assessment standards, as well as new Delta MP Carla Qualtrough voicing opposition over T2 during the election, will impact port expansion at Roberts Bank.

reating a theatre show out of the online blog PostSecret was extremely tough, says Tsawwassen’s Justin Sudds.

You want to take people on an emotional journey and this show absolutely does that. JUSTIN SUDDS

He’s one of the cocreators of PostSecret: The Show, which is on a 25-city tour of Canada and the United States. The show, in a separate run, is in the midst of a two-week encore run at the Firehall Arts Centre in Vancouver, where it made its Canadian debut last year. The show is based on a blog that accepts submissions from people who confess their secrets anonymously on homemade postcards.

Justin Sudds, who lives in Tsawwassen, has helped bring PostSecret to the theatre stage. “What’s really difficult is hitting all of these important aspects of what the project shows us about our human condition while at the same time making it entertaining,” Sudds says. “You want to take people on an emotional journey and this show absolutely does that.” He explains finding the

right formula of funnier and darker topics was difficult. Sudds, whose wife introduced him to the blog, travelled to the U.S. with the other co-creators of the stage show and met Frank Warren, the creator and curator of PostSecret. “We all flew to Maryland and sat around Frank

Warren’s dining room table and went through thousands and thousands and thousands of postcards,” Sudds says. By the end of that weekend they knew they wanted to make the project. “It wasn’t just another creative venture we were all working on,” he says, adding the power of the

personal stories and the heart of the project had so much meaning, depth and truth. PostSecret: The Show runs until March 5 at the Firehall Arts Centre, 280 E. Cordova St., Vancouver. Tickets range from $17 to $30 and are available at firehallartscentre.ca or at 604-689-0926.

Talent for this year’s Delta Idol competition is so overwhelming judges couldn’t choose just 10 finalists. After careful review of the 23 young singers that submitted auditions for the live final next week, judges have narrowed it down to 12, with three contestants returning from previous competitions. The top 12 finalists for the 2016 Delta Idol are: Crescina Cole, Liette FILE PHOTO

Desnoyers, Arica Dionne, Victoria Johnson, Nicholas Kluftinger, Hunter Lang, Trista Monet, Cameron Perry, Taylor Dianne Robinson, Mona Subramani, Sami van Gogh and Mary Verdon. Finalists will perform a song they have chosen for a live audience at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on Friday, Feb. 26. Vocal skill, performance quality and likeability will all be considered by this year’s three new judges. “It gives the local talent a platform to perform,” says Lisa Doepker, one of the organizers of the third annual Corporation of Delta event.

Delta Idol has become a stepping stone for young musicians who may find it difficult to perform outside of the community. The show has also become an exciting event for members of the public to enjoy a night of live, local entertainment. “It’s a really fun night,” adds Doepker. The grand-prize winner will have the opportunity to work with Fresh Air Audio Inc. on a three-hour recording session. The 2016 Delta Idol Live Performance Finals begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door for $10 or in advance by phone at 604-943-9437.

Pet first aid at DCAS

Trainer Amber Cottle to instruct two-day course DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Professional dog trainer Amber Cottle is putting on a pet first aid course next week at the Delta Community Animal Shelter. The 10-hour course takes place over two days, both of which need to be completed to receive certification, Cottle explains. The Walks ‘N’ Wags course is nationally recognized, she says. “It’s the most comprehensive pet first aid course available,” says Cottle, who has instructed several of them before. It is applicable to both dog and cat owners. “Really, what the course is designed for is to help stabilize the injury or illness of an animal until we can get them to a veterinarian,” she says. The course will cover assessing illness based on vital signs, different types of injuries, bandaging, CPR and more. Live animals are used for demonstrations (finding femoral pulses, restraint techniques and bandaging). “They get a real life scenario rather than just working on mannequins.” Participants, if their pet is friendly, social and can remain calm throughout the day, may be able to bring their cat or dog to the course. There is also an open-book certification exam at the end of the course.

It costs $149 per person. To sign up visit ambercottle. com. Much ado about Stratford upon Avon

Exploring William Shakespeare’s hometown, from birthplace and childhood home to old haunts CHRIS MILLIKAN

Optimist contributor

J

oining other literary enthusiasts in Bancroft Gardens, an informative guided walk begins our explorations in Shakespeare’s hometown. From Swan Fountain, David leads us back in time around Stratford upon Avon. “When the Bard was born, only 1,500 people lived here,” he grins. “Imagine small, strawthatched houses with open fires crowded together along foul, muddy streets…among 50 taverns!” Unsurprisingly, this old town centre burned down in 1594, 1595 and 1614. Surrounded by restored half-timbered buildings, David identifies one of few Tudor-style homes saved, explaining, “Harvard House illustrates ‘wattle and daub’ construction, typical during Shakespeare’s lifetime. Ornate exterior woodwork and stained glass windows suggest merchant wealth.” A short distance away, Shakespeare’s Birthplace has long welcomed pilgrims like us. Dickens, Carlyle, Walter Scott, Mark Twain and many others sought inspiration here; some even etched their signatures on its windowpanes. Inside, patterned linen

wallpaper and sturdy oak furniture reflect Will’s middle-class upbringing. His father had prospered making and selling fine leather gloves in the workshop, still set up for a day’s work. In the low-ceilinged nursery upstairs, a bonneted docent recounts, “Born here, Shakespeare later shared this bed with two brothers; a third slept in the cradle, two sisters in the adjoining room.” Visualizing them playing on the original hardwood floors, we marvel at the wheeled “truckle” with straw sleeping mats stowed under the bed. Married at 18, William lived here five more years with Anne. And amid outside gardens, costumed players bring Shakespeare’s familiar characters alive before our eyes. Returning along Chapel Street, David points out Nash’s House, named for his granddaughter’s husband; next door, the foundations of New Place. “An established playwright, Shakespeare bought New Place, Stratford’s second largest house,” says David. “There he wrote The Tempest and later works. He died there on his 52nd birthday.” Celebrating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Nash’s House and restored

gardens at New Place reopen in April. Will studied Latin, classical theatre and history from age six or seven at the still-used grammar school in the next block. When family fortunes reversed, he left early at 13. Beyond stands Hall’s Croft, elegant home of eldest daughter Susanna and eminent physician John Hall. Walled gardens behind the house enclose beds of medicinal herbs. Inside, the study reveals natural remedies in coloured bottles and jars. An intricately carved oak bed, cradle, wardrobe and commode fill their spacious bedroom. Finally, an avenue of lime trees leads us to 13th century Holy Trinity Church. There, the parish register shows Shakespeare’s 1564 baptismal and 1616 burial entries; the font used at his baptism stands nearby. Shakespeare, his wife, daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter’s husband are all interred in the chancel. Above, a shelf holds Shakespeare’s painted marble bust, provided by Anne. Concluding our walk, David quotes Stratford’s favourite son with dramatic flair to our hearty applause and next afternoon, we fervently applaud the Merchant of Venice at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS

Another morning, we walk off hearty English breakfasts along a twokilometre pathway to Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Shottery. Sighting her family’s thatched, threechimney farmhouse, we visualize Anne watching for Will from the pretty latticed windows. A Hop-On-Hop-Off bus drops us at Mary Arden’s Farm in Wilmcote, five kilometres away. The 1570s farmhouse belonging to Shakespeare’s grandparents continues as part of a working farm. Activity boards encourage us to meet rare domestic breeds, practice archery, play games and try early chores like young William would have done.

PHOTOS BY CHRIS & RICK MILLIKAN

Top: Flying a flag, Harvard House illustrates the construction style typical of the time. Bottom: Anne Hathaway’s Cottage in Shottery. Wrapping up our visit back in Bancroft Gardens, we contemplate Gower’s sculptured Shakespeare, seated high on a pedestal. Posing at each corner, Hamlet, Prince Hal, Lady Macbeth and Falstaff por-

tray philosophy, history, tragedy and comedy. Indeed, a fitting memorial to this literary giant’s versatility. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate.

Sonja Picard will help kick off the first Artists Talks meeting of 2016 for the Artists in the Village Society. She will be giving a talk about how to navigate around your inner “creative critic.” Picard says all artists have an inner dialogue with their inner creative critic that can be somewhat destructive.

“The trick is understanding where the creative critic was born, acknowledge it and then work from there,” she says. “We need to create tools to grab when it shows up so that we can create more and be in the ‘joy’ of the making instead of having negative dialogue with ourselves and getting stuck in our creative tracks.”

Top 3 trainer tips for getting toned and fit Well on Your Way

I

P.J. WREN

saw a quote on the Internet the other day that made me giggle. It was a picture of a guy standing around a group of overweight seniors with the caption reading, “If you want to look young and thin, hang out around old fat people.” Now, that’s one way to do it, isn’t? But if you live in this town you will be hardpressed to find some outof-shape seniors to hang

with to make you feel better. All the seniors I know kick some serious butt and make a lot of 20-year-olds look bad. So, our next step is turning to fitness to help get us get fitter and feel younger. Whether your goal is to lose weight, build muscle tone, prevent diseases or simply stay above ground for the longest you can, these three tips will help get you there far more effectively than other training technique: • Consistency. One of the first rules of achieving better fitness is frequency. I know, really boring, right? However, you cannot expect to see any change in your body, or your fitness with an inconsistent workout plan, or by training just once or twice a week. How often should you be training for results? Three times a week strength work, twice a

The aerobics group showed no increase in arm or leg strength while the weight training group showed a 43 per cent increase in arm strength and a 22 per cent increase in leg strength. Building your strength and lean muscle mass will boost your ability to burn fat, grow bone density, improve immunity, combat diabetes, reduce joint pain found with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, strengthen your heart, yield better coronary artery flow in the heart and produce greater submaximal endurance and less fatigue. • Intensity. Exercise intensity matters far more than duration when working out. In a study called the Copenhagen City Heart Study, researchers followed a random sample of about 12,000 people in Copenhagen for 21 years. These 12,000 all cycled

and what the researchers found was that individuals who typically rode fast on a regular basis (so biking at a higher intensity) lived 5.3 years longer than those that cycled slowly. A study in the American Journal of Health Promotion found that women who engaged in shorter bouts of more intense exercise had a lower body mass index than those who stayed at a steady state when exercising. This study found that for every extra minute of high-intensity exertion a woman did each day, there was a .07 decrease in body mass index. And that’s only one minute. Imagine if you did five to 10 minutes a few times a week? PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who specializes in over-40 fitness for women. You can reach her at: www.fitnesswithpj.com.

While most B.C. drivers are honest when it comes to making insurance claims, there are a few that are hurting things for the rest of us in the province. Industry studies estimate that about 10 to 20 per cent of all insurance claims contain an element of fraud or exaggeration. Applying those estimates here means fraud is costing us up to $600 million per year, or more than $100 annually on every auto insurance policy. Fraud cheats everyone and comes in all shapes and sizes. Some fraud is organized and orchestrated by a group of individuals, namely, staged accidents and stolen vehicle rings.

Day long weekend (July 30 to Aug. 1), the 44th edition of the community festival will be filled with games, food, music and sports, offering activities for the whole family that attract over 12,000 people annually. “It’s going to be a great community celebration; we hope you’ll be part of it,” said Sun Festival chairman Bob Tate. Most of the activities will take place at Winskill Park. New events like a drive-in movie and a home renovation fair will join old favourites such as the volleyball and slopitch tournaments, stage entertainment, petting

Monday is always the busiest day of the weekend and is highlighted by the Rotary Club parade. Although each year the festival has a new theme, its main objective is to celebrate the community in partnership with local

service organizations such as the TOOBs, Lions and Rotary clubs, along with the financial support from the Corporation of Delta, the Tsawwassen BIA and the business community. For more information, call 604-220-2147, email tsawwassen.sunfestival2015@gmail.com or visit www.sunfestival.ca.

And there is still dirt there even when we think we’re pretty clean. Cleaning carpets is easy. But how do you clean your heart? Where do you rent that kind of cleaner? This kind of cleaning job isn’t a do it yourself project. Jeremiah also wrote: “No amount of soap or lye can make you clean. I still see the stain of your guilt. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!” (Jeremiah 2:22, NLT) We have to want it, but only God can do it. And he will if we commit our lives to him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9, NIV) Reach Mike Mawhorter at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

Several months ago I cleaned my carpets. One of the things I enjoy about that project is that you see immediate results. I went over them twice with soap and once as a rinse. It was amazing, gratifying and totally disgusting how dirty the water was the third time! I’m sure I could have gone over them a few more times with similar results. Dirt gets dragged in and ground in over time, even before it looks bad. And there is still dirt there even when it looks clean. I think there are some sobering parallels with our own hearts. The prophet Jeremiah wrote: “The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who

New principal is a big hit with the kids

Sophie Lemieux working to raise awareness and enrollment at l’École du Bois-joli in Tsawwassen PRISCILLA LEUNG

Optimist contributor

She has only been the principal at l’École du Bois-joli since the beginning of the year, but already the kids are big fans. Walking through the halls of the Tsawwassen elementary school, Sophie Lemieux is greeted by hugs from the young Francophone students. Lemieux began her teaching career doing substitute work with French immersion schools in Montréal. “I thought it was so beautiful to see how the kids were learning a language,” says the new principal. “I fell in love with that.” Now the Quebec native is working with the school’s staff and parents to promote awareness and enrollment. Tucked away in a quiet Tsawwassen neighbourhood, the French-speaking school, which opened its

or a French immersion institute. “We’re not a school where you come here just to learn a language, that’s the difference with French

immersion,” says Lemieux, “We create kids that follow through with the language and with the cultural aspect.” Some parents worry

about their child’s ability to learn English at Francophone schools such as Bois-joli. However, French-speaking students must complete the

same FSA testing from the Ministry of Education as students at Englishspeaking schools, and Lemieux says the results of those tests show “they finish as good or better.” Both Lemieux and Bois-joli’s secretary, Virginia Evans, have had their children enrolled in Francophone education. “Here in B.C. we’ve been put on the backburner,” says Evans, who moved from France 20 years ago. “Thirty years ago there was no choice for parents that spoke French to have the right to educate their kids in French.” The staff at Bois-joli is working with the school’s PAC to build enrollment in the hope that more students will mean more friends and diversity for the children already attending. Lemieux hopes to keep a close-knit environment while having enough students to create a diverse social circle at the small school.

Frustrated with your skin problems?

Shining the light on Pre-mature Aging Do you remember when your mom used to call your freckles “angel kisses?” But as you age, facial pigmentation in the forms of brown spots, facial flushing and changes in texture is no longer charming. We all realize that our sun soaked days gave us souvenirs we really don’t want to keep.

Re-embrace your youthful face with Photofacial (IPL) Treatment

‘An evenly – coloured, luminous skin is very important for having a youthful look,’ says Mary Seitz, owner and Laser Technician at Beach Grove Laser Clinic. With her Nursing Background, she always gives emphasis on sun protection and that having blotchy skin can add as many years to your face as having fine lines and wrinkles. If your skin has that healthy glow, it can wipe years off your appearance. Recent study showed that uneven pigmentation increases your perceived age far more than laugh lines do. Discolouration, makes mak us look 10-15 years older. For or a speedy solution, Beach Grove Laser recently upgraded and acquired the next generation in Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Versa is a powerful, erful, non-invasive treatment that reverses the signs of the greatest cause of

There is another damage as well: enlarged pores, loss of texture and tone and skin discoloration. Over time, the elastin fibres - which gives your skin that firm and youthful skin, simply break down and your skin sags. Our newest addition to our treatment menu is safe, virtually pain-free, with minimal side-effects and no downtime. Lasting 15-20 minutes, per procedure, results are noticeable from the first session and if brown spots are your only concern, one or two treatments might do it all. 3-4 treatments are optimal for longer-lasting results, up to a year or longer. Versa IPL is recommended for sun spots, chronic facial redness or rosacea, pore size reduction, fine wrinkles on the face, neck, lines and wrinkl chest and hands. FOR A LIMITED TIME,

Vitamin D deficiency drains $9 billion from Canadian Health Care system The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach sun bed Salon can, in most cases, give you this optimum level of Vitamin D. Our world could not survive without U.V. light. Visit Two Powerful websites: • Dr. Gerry Schwalfenberg Edmonton Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian crisis and world wide problem. Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org) calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency to be no less than $9 billion annually. A Creighton University study showed that people rich in Vitamin D have up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk. The Canadian Pediatric Society recommended that pregnant women consult their physicians about getting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times the current government recommendations.

The Canadian Cancer Society has called for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily.

• Dr. Marc Sorenson - The Vitamin D Society Bottom left of website - why has the Sun been made out to be our enemy?

The key message the Vitamin D Society wants Canadians to receive is: that we are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because of our country’s relatively weak sunshine most of the year and the fact that Vitamin D is rare in diet. With thanks to the Vitamin D Society for this info, who incidentally recommends asking your doctor for an annual blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

UV light is UV light either from the outdoor sun or from our controlled beds. - I got a “Base Tan” at Hawaiian beach and went out in the Hottest sun on Holiday-Used no sunscreen and did not burn. 4814 HAVILAND, LADNER VILLAGE 604-946-1611 WWW.DELTATAN.COM

Hawks respond to another change Delta surprises Wolf Pack 5-0 in series opener with new head coach at the helm MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Ice Hawks won a playoff game for the first time in two years and they did it with their third head coach of the season who has been on the job for less than a week. Darren Naylor made his home ice debut in Tuesday’s surprising 5-0 home ice win over the North Vancouver Wolf Pack in the opening game of the bestof-seven series. The teams are meeting for the third straight year in the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs, with the defending champion Wolf Pack having swept last year’s match-up. They also prevailed in 2014 — winning the final three games after Delta had jumped out to a 2-1 series lead. The Wolf Pack have been rolling again, taking a league best 32-9-0-3 record into the postseason, and were 21 points better than the fourth place Ice Hawks (20-18-2-4). What looked like another mismatch was anything but in what was Delta’s most complete game of the season. The hosts took control with a terrific second period that produced four goals. Rookie Michael Schellenberg scored on a wraparound and the flood gates opened soon after as the Hawks capitalized on some North Van defensive breakdowns. Justin Schwartz connected on a breakaway, just moments after Luc Soares had been denied when he was in the clear. Delta Wild U18 affiliate Nick Wilson notched a power play goal and Jordan Deyremenjian converted a rebound. Wilson capped a big night with his second of the game in the

PHOITO BY MARK BOOTH

Delta’s Jordan Deyremenjian is turned back on the doorstep during Tuesday’s 5-0 playoff win. third period. The 16-year-old logged plenty of ice time, playing on one of the team’s top lines. It was a strong indication how things have changed in the past week with Naylor opting to scratch a couple of regulars for the playoff opener. Ice Hawks’ general manager Peter Zerbinos insists the latest coaching move was not by design. The campaign began with Kevin Flather behind the bench but he departed soon after the club changed ownership and Jeremy Poirier was brought on board. The original intention was for Naylor to be added to the coaching staff for the playoff run. The team has been struggling to find consistency all season and a decision was made after a 6-1 home

ice loss to Aldergrove on Feb. 9. Naylor, 46, played in the Western and B.C. Junior Hockey Leagues before turning pro. His coaching career includes guiding teams in both the PJHL and Kootenay Leagues. He made his debut in Delta’s 5-2 road win over Richmond on Feb. 11. “Talking with the owners, we thought we needed a little bit more experience behind the bench. The offer was to bring Darren on to work with Jeremy. He didn’t want any part of that so Darren decided to come on board and we made that move,” said Zerbinos. “There have been so many highs and lows (this season). We are one of the highest scoring teams in the league but felt we needed a little more structure at the back end. Darren

brings us that. “He is a very demanding and experienced coach. It seems like it is working so far and that was the desired effect. “You worry about doing something like that so late in the season and you don’t know how it’s going to turn out in the end. From the ownership down, we just felt we had to do something.” Third-year stopper Jacob Latrace earned his first shutout of the season, turning aside 36 shots. The Wolf Pack entered the playoffs as the league’s highest scoring team, averaging over five goals per contest. The series shifts to North Vancouver for games two and three on Friday and Saturday night. Game four will be back in Ladner on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m.

Pacers host Huskies Tuesday to open playoff tourney The host Delta Pacers will take on the North Delta Huskies on Tuesday at 3 p.m. to open the Fraser Valley AAA West Playoff Tournament. The Pacers secured home court advantage for the eight-team event thanks to a 9-1 record in regular season play. The Huskies earned the league’s eighth and final playoff spot with

a 3-7 mark. That included an 85-69 loss to the Pacers back on Jan. 12. Other participating teams include: Southridge, Princess Margaret, LA Matheson, Kwantlen Park, Guildford Park and Sullivan Heights. The tournament continues until Friday

with the final slated for 7:45 p.m. The top four teams will advance to the Fraser Valley Championships the following week in Abbotsford. The Pacers concluded league play with a 57-44 home floor win over Frank Hurt on Monday.

Vanier Cup champs thrilled to land Sun Devils standout

South Delta Sun Devils’ Ryan von Ende has officially committed to the defending Vanier Cup champions. The standout Grade 12 offensive lineman signed his Letter of Intent last week, keeping the next chapter of his football career close to home, much to the delight of UBC Thunderbirds head coach Blake Nill.

Ryan von Ende He considers von Ende as one of his top recruits and welcomed him, along with Jagroop Sandhu of Vancouver College, to the new UBC Football Academic Centre, to sign with the program among family members. Von Ende was initially weighing offers from around the country. “The signing of von Ende and Sandhu is very big for UBC. It’s important we are

Brian Elsey 604-551-9396 www.brianelsey.ca

able to protect our backyard in terms of recruiting,” said Nill. “Having two young national prominent student athletes stay at home says a lot about the future of UBC football and the direction of which its travelling.” UBC enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in Nill’s first season at the helm, culminating with the school winning the national championship for the first time since 1997. The Thunderbirds went 2-6 a year earlier and missed the playoffs. Von Ende, who was named to the All Provincial Team, will be re-united with receiver Bryce Connors who red-shirted last season. Both were members of the Sun Devils 2014 provincial championship team. Earlier, receiver Michael Mann committed to UBC where he will get a chance to play alongside his older brother David. Another prominent member of the 2014 SDSS team is taking his career to Burnaby Mountain. Receiver Thomas Franklin was among 27 players to commit to the SFU Clansmen during the NCAA National Signing Day. The Ladner native had over 500 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his Grade 12 year at South Delta. The 6-foot-4 standout was clutch in the team’s memorable playoff run, with a key third quarter touchdown in the semi-final win over Terry Fox. He also hauled in the opening major in the championship game against Mt Doug.

Ladner Predators secured a spot in their U14 District 5 League Cup final with a 7-2 win over the Ladner Brigade in a battle of unbeaten teams. Luke Hoar had a pair for the Predators. Colby Hodson, Kaiden Moore, Kian Mackie, Spencer Yesowick and Connor Jones also scored. Josh Bermel had both goals for the Brigade.

.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Danny. He passed away peacefully after a long and courageous battle with MS. He was predeceased by his wife Marj in 1996. He is survived by his children, Marcy (Karl) and Brad (Karen) and his beloved grandchildren, Tanner, Tyeson and Erin. We would like to thank Dr. Long for all his years of care and all the nurses at the Extended Care Section of Delta Hospital. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2016 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at The Cammidge House 498 Boundary Bay Road, Tsawwassen, BC. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

Jim was a retired electrical inspector for the Municipality of Surrey, former scout master, community volunteer, Scottish country dancer, and member (Rtd) of Delta Police Pipe Band. When he first arrived in Canada he worked for MacMillan Bloedel, a short stint as a guard at Okalla, Domtar and then for the Municipality of Surrey. Jim was a proud Scot and equally proud Canadian. After he was no longer able to play the pipes he took great pleasure in latter years as standard bearer carrying the Canadian flag as he marched with the pipe band in numerous parades both here and overseas. His proudest moment as a piper was when he played the pipes with DPPB at the Edinburgh Tattoo while family members were in the audience. Jim was a merchant marine officer and while on a trip to Canada he met Sylvia Marston as she was coming to visit her sister in Winnipeg. Jim and Sylvia were married in 1953 and emigrated from U.K. in 1956. He lived in Vancouver on Harwood Street for 3 years and then in Surrey for 43 years and in 2005 moved to Langley to be closer to family. He is predeceased by his wife Sylvia (2003). Prayers and dedication and parade to take place at Gardens of Gethsemani Chapel 15800 - 32nd Avenue at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 26, 2016. Service and reception to follow at Cloverdale Legion Branch #6, 17567 57th Avenue, Cloverdale at 1:00 p.m.

MORRISON, Margaret Ruth 1927 - 2016

Passed away peacefully at the Fraser View Intermediate Care Lodge in Richmond, BC, at the age of 88. She will be sadly missed by her sons, Daryl (Lana) Morrison, Glen (Myra), grandchildren, Ryan, Dalan, Chalane, Evan and Aaron, sisters, Nellie, Pammy (Jack), and a lifetime of relatives and friends. There will be no service by request. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946.6040
