Maya Sirton (with binoculars) and Anthony Poelzer (front right) are excited about tomorrow’s NatureBlitz.

NatureBlitz, the first event of its kind in the Lower Mainland, will let families get up close and personal with nature tomorrow on Westham Island. Nature Canada, in conjunction with NatureKids BC and others, including experts from Delta, are hosting the free, allday event at the George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary and

Alaksen National Wildlife Area. Filled with various activities where families can actively participate, NatureBlitz will feature wildlife walks, outdoor exploration and an Instagram photo contest. Participants will get an up-close look at a variety of species of songbirds, small grassland mammals and possibly even bats or owls. NatureKids BC executive director Kristine Webber said Nature Canada has done suc-

cessful “BioBlitz” events where scientists go into certain areas for surveys of vegetation, insect and animal life, whereas this weekend will include families. “We can still do some work looking at what species are present at a site, but doing more interpretation and learning about what’s there and how they interact and what’s really special about these places,” Webber said. Family is spared more grief David Ennis, who killed six people in early 1980s, waives right to parole hearing JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A Tsawwassen family is once again feeling a sense of relief after the man convicted of murdering six of its members decided to waive his right to a parole hearing. David Ennis was up for parole again this year but

recently elected to forgo a hearing. He has been behind bars since the early 1980s after admitting to killing six members of one family on a camping trip in Wells Gray Park in B.C.’s interior in the summer of 1982. Shelley Boden and her family have made the trip to Bowden, Alberta,

which is just south of Red Deer, for Ennis’ previous parole hearings. He was first denied parole in 2008 and then again in 2012. He previously waived his right to a hearing in 2014 and if he doesn’t change his mind before July, he won’t be eligible for parole again until July 2021. “We don’t know why he

has, but we don’t care,” said Boden, adding family members are relieved they don’t have to go through another parole hearing for several years. Ennis, who was known as David Shearing at the time, stalked the family before shooting Boden’s aunt and uncle, Bob and Jackie Johnson, and Jackie

Johnson’s parents, George and Edith Bentley. He kept the Johnsons’ two daughters, Janet, 13, and Karen, 11, alive for several days and sexually assaulted the two girls before killing them as well. He pleaded guilty almost two years after the slayings and was sentenced to life in prison.

Delta police are hoping the public can help identify a suspect in a case of credit card fraud. A woman had her purse stolen from the Ladner Leisure Centre on Oct. 20 of last year. Just after 3 p.m. she left her belongings in a locker and when she returned about an hour later, she discovered the locker had been pried open and her purse was missing. In that hour, the suspect used the woman’s credit cards to rack up more than $600 worth of purchases

at seven businesses in Ladner and Tsawwassen. The incident is still under investigation and this week police released photos from surveillance footage of the suspect using the woman’s credit cards. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Const. Aaron Pante at apante@deltapolice.ca or call 604-946-4411 ext. 3006 and quote file 2015-22604.

Families will get opportunity to interact with nature CONTINUED from Page 1 “They will get a chance to do some stuff. Some of it is observational, looking at the different small mammal communities in the grassland there. We’ll have Christine Terpsma with the Delta Farmland

and Wildlife Trust, who is going to be doing some live animal trapping, so we’re probably going to be seeing some voles up close and talk about the importance of them in the grassland and what elements they need.”

Webber said other activities will include biologists conducting surveys and tours, including an invasive species count, while later in the afternoon there will be an Owl Prowl. The event is organized by Nature Canada with

NatureKids BC, the B.C Waterfowl Society, the Delta Naturalists Society, the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, and Environment and Climate Change Canada. Participants are advised to park at the bird sanc-

Room named to recognize firefighters Delta Firefighters Charitable Society donates $100,000 to Delta Hospital’s diagnostic expansion

Delta Hospital Foundation recently announced a gift of $100,000 from the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society. In recognition of this gift, a room in the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building will be named the Delta Firefighters Radiography Room. Delta firefighters are long-time supporters of Delta Hospital, contributing over $400,000 since 1994. Their support has often extended to the foundation’s signature events, including the annual golf tournament and Moonlight Gala, through generous sponsorship, the provision of auction items and in providing event day volunteer support. “The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society is such a generous supporter of Delta Hospital,” says Lisa Hoglund, the foundation’s

ago the society introduced a new payroll giving initiative, with members making their own charitable contributions directly from their pay cheques towards specific fundraising initiatives, as chosen by the members. “This gift from the firefighters of Delta dem-

onstrates an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of our community, beyond the services they themselves provide,” says Veronica Carroll, the hospital foundation’s executive director. “With this donation to Delta Hospital, our firefighters will have invested

over $2 million into our community through our fundraising endeavours and our own personal giving,” says Delta Firefighters Charitable Society director Ben Lewis. Lewis says putting this program in place to allow firefighters to donate money from their own pay cheques to the ongoing care of patients at Delta Hospital is a tremendous opportunity to serve the citizens of Delta outside their professional duties. In the wider community, the society has supported over 130 groups and organizations, as well as individual recipients suffering from medical or financial hardships. Its last major donation was gifted to the B.C. Professional Fire Fighters Association Burn Fund Centre, to improve services available to burn and trauma survivors and their families.

Heart health should be a concern for people of all ages, but especially so for men and women over 50. But heart disease does not have to be an accepted byproduct of aging. For example, a 2014 study published in the AHA journal Circulation found that maintaining or increasing physical activity after age 65 can improve the heart’s well-being and lower risk of heart attack. In addition to increasing physical activity as they age, older men and women who understand heart disease and learn to recognize its symptoms have a greater chance of minimizing its affects and lowering their risk of having a heart attack. How can I protect my heart? Heart healthy habits take some effort, but men and women can protect their hearts regardless of their ages. • Get sufficient exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise per day can protect against disease. • Quit smoking. Smoking increases your risk for a host of ailments, including heart disease. Quitting is a great way to start getting your heart and other parts of your body back on track. • Include heart-healthy foods in your diet. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in cholesterol, salt and saturated fat promotes heart health. • Don’t drink alcohol to excess. Like smoking, drinking alcohol to excess can lead to a host of problems, such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia and high cholesterol, each of which increases your risk of heart disease. • Lose weight. Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for heart disease. If you have already started to exercise daily and eat a more heart-healthy diet, then you’re on your way to losing weight. Consult your physician if diet and exercise don’t seem to be helping you to shed pounds. Heart disease kills millions of people across the globe each year, many of whom are over 50. But men and women who learn about heart disease and how to reduce their risk stand a far greater chance of fighting the disease.

abc shutting doors for final time tomorrow

Ladner is losing a prominent local business that’s closing after more than two decades. Owned by the Ramji family, the abc Country Restaurant on Ladner Trunk Road is shutting its doors for good tomorrow after serving the community for the last quartercentury. “It’s been a joy to look after the communities of Ladner and Tsawwassen for the last 25 years,” said Ali Ramji. “But for economic reasons, the time came when we had to say goodbye.” The family is maintaining its other location in Richmond. Identifiable by the large red tractor outside, the restaurant has become more than just a place to get something to eat. It’s become a meeting place for many in the community. Ramji said the restaurant has received much love, warmth and care from the community since word of the pending closure has spread around town, with many custom-

hey just won’t give up. It’s no secret that some mayors in the Lower Mainland aren’t big fans of the provincial government’s decision to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a 10-lane bridge, but it’s about time they stopped playing games with what is undeniably an overdue upgrade to our transportation system. Metro Vancouver recently asked Victoria for a two-month delay on bridge planning so it has sufficient time to assess the impacts of the planned crossing. Given the Metro board is dominated by Vancouver and Surrey, and due to the fact both of those cities, among others, have voiced objections to the bridge, it’s getting increasingly difficult to take Metro Vancouver too seriously on this file. Not surprisingly, Victoria didn’t heed the request. When you say you don’t like a project, and suggest money earmarked for it should be spent elsewhere, it kind of colours the input you then offer on said project. And I’m sure it can be chalked up to sheer coincidence that the transit wish list that was soundly defeated by voters in last year’s plebiscite had ventures in Vancouver and Surrey as its two biggest ticket items. That’s not to say there aren’t legitimate issues with the bridge. Questions abound on everything from whether more blacktop is the answer to our traffic woes to the process from which an ultimate decision was made to how much influence the shipping industry has wielded. There are $3.5 billion worth of questions about this massive undertaking, so I’m not suggesting Metro Vancouver’s concerns are without merit. But even if the regional level of government has valid technical issues, it’s hard to get past all the noise it’s been making and hard not to look at the griping as anything but sour grapes. Several Metro mayors don’t think the bridge is a good idea and, although they haven’t verbalized as much, their stand suggests they don’t really care too much about the thousands of commuters stuck in the congestion created by the antiquated tube on a daily basis. I fully admit I’m biased because I live out here, and I’m quite willing to acknowledge that one bridge won’t solve all our transportation ills, but it’s impossible to deny that an upgraded crossing is long overdue.

Cultural icon John Horton has never been too far from sea

A

s a youngster along with family, I used to attend potluck dinners at the Ladner United Church. Now on the board of trustees of the Delta Museum and Archives I had the pleasure of attending its most recent Christmas potluck dinner. Amongst staff, volunteers and society members, I engaged in conversation with Tsawwassen residents John and Mary Horton. I recognized his name as a museum benefactor from his donation of two paintings for the museum’s annual fundraiser. The magnificent paintings were well received by the audience with an excellent return for the museum’s needy coffers. Always on the lookout for a subject for a column, I suggested we meet for a chat in the new year. With a vague recollection of our conversation, John Horton, acclaimed mariner artist, agreed to meet for coffee. Here’s a brief sketch in the life and times of John Horton: An Englishman by birth in 1935, the only offspring of parents who were servants to the upper classes, Horton has enjoyed a most exceptional career and lifestyle. Raised during the Second World War, Horton’s future was shaped by the sea, naval docks crammed with warships in the shadows of London suburbs.

Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND

At the age of four he was seriously injured in a car accident and spent a year in hospital. As a result, physical sports were not in his future, but fortunately art was. Classical music, sketching and painting, as well as a passion for sailing, absorbed much of Horton’s life. Considered a prodigy, he apprenticed for a company building interiors for shops, hotels and, most importantly, ships. With a passion for naval architecture and drafting, his design work was incorporated into his future as a naval marine artist. Horton’s interest in ships and sea led to the British navy as a full-time seaman. He continued to draw inspiration from that environment and to paint whenever he could. By age 26 some of his paintings were deemed technically correct and accepted

by the Royal Society of Marine Artists. In 1966, Horton and family immigrated to Canada and settled in Vancouver as an architectural artist, designing shopping centres, power stations and high rise towers. In 1976, with a growing reputation as a marine artist, he closed his business to become a full-time artist. Horton’s outstanding work has been recognized by his peers, private collectors, historians and the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Capturing historical naval drama, his paintings have been recognized by government institutions nationally and internationally. Having spent much time at sea and coming into contact with vessels in distress, in 1979 he joined the Canadian Marine Rescue Agency on dedicated patrols during fisheries openings. His work with fisheries and search and rescue made his boat the busiest auxiliary vessel in Canada. In 1994, Horton joined a volunteer Canadian life boat society patrolling rivers and adjacent waters, cruising in a 52-foot launch built in 1944 originally for U.S. Admiral Nimitz. Nice to stumble across a cultural icon residing in Delta. And a good night to you, Mary. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

PRESENTED BY ANGELA’S

Sunnier days ahead now Conservatives are gone

Editor: Re: Liberal foreign policy getting Canada ignored by its allies in the ISIL fight, letter to the editor, Feb. 19 Up to and since the federal election, I have looked forward to the letters sent to the Optimist in regards to the defeated Conservatives. I find it rather amusing how after a mere 100 days, the same Conservative supporters continue to rant on about the nonexistent failures of our new government, yearning for the return of “the sunny

days” of one our most pathetic governments in history. I wish S.M. Cruickshank would have taken a little more time to elaborate. Stephen Harper and his motley crew caused more damage to this country than one could imagine. Interesting how I read the letter the same day the new Liberal government posted the details of 2012 budget cuts which were, for unknown reasons until today, withheld by the Conservatives. The Liberals had to fight in

court to see this document. Typical Harper transparency. I hope people take the time to have a look at the gutting Harper did to our country. Under Harper, yes, the world knew where Canada stood on issues. That is why the UN kicked us off the Security Council. Harper could not be trusted and the people of Canada got it right. Back to sunnier days? I think our sun is of different colours. Darren Garbutt

Ladner’s off-leash areas pale to dog parks in other places

Editor: Re: Plenty of spots for dogs to run free, just not on dikes, letter to the editor, Feb. 17 Ellen Stewart points out there are many dog owners who ignore the leashing laws at the Boundary Bay dike. While it is pointless to argue that breaking the law should be condoned or ignored, one comment does need to be looked at more closely. “If you want your beloved pet to run free, Delta has parks for that.” Well,

the simple answer to that is they don’t. If you are looking for parks such as they have in Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Langley and elsewhere, you won’t find them in Delta. Ladner, for example, boasts three off-leash dog parks. Paterson Park is the only one reasonably accessible but is totally unsafe bordered by two very busy roadways with no fence. The North 40 is exceptional but has some issues with parking, general

conditions and garbage and Wellington Point Park is not only unsafe with no defined area, but is barely worth the designation of a park. In fact, Delta has recognized this perhaps in that it doesn’t call them parks. They are off-leash areas. Fenced dog runs are what we need. These areas can have a very positive effect on the lives of dogs and their owners. Sidnee Williams

St. David’s set to celebrate Patronal Fest

Volunteers dressed in period costumes welcome members of the public to Cammidge House last Sunday afternoon for a Heritage Day event. The century-old home in Boundary Bay Regional Park played host to a variety of displays so visitors could gain a little more knowledge about the municipality’s past.

Daffodil and humble leek play key roles in annual Feast Day Daffodils bloom at the garden entrance to St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen, a reminder of the important role the flower plays in the March 1 celebration of St. David’s Day. One of two symbols associated with Saint David and Wales, the daffodil was introduced in the 19th century as an option to the humble leek — the vegetable that in the seventh century became the national emblem of Wales. The leek arises from an occasion when a troop of Welsh soldiers was ordered to wear a leek on their helmet to distinguish themselves in a battle against pagan Saxon invaders. The battle is said to have taken place in a field of leeks. Many Welsh people wear both national symbols of Wales to celebrate St. David on this day — the daffodil and the leek.

The parish will commemorate the Feast Day on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when the daffodil will have pride of place at a Patronal Festival Service focused on the life and legends of St. David, with traditional Welsh music provided by St. David’s Community Choir and Celtic harpist Tom Morrison. Choir anthems, historical readings and hymns will combine in a portrayal of the sixth century Celtic monk, abbot and bishop who became patron saint of Wales and namesake of Tsawwassen’s Anglican parish. Following the service, the leek will come into its own in the form of Cawl Cennin (leek and potato soup) served in the parish hall. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the sounds and tastes of Wales at St. David’s Church, 1115- 51A St.

Lent offers perfect opportunity to de-clutter life that’s got too busy

“What is the connection between our moms and the season of Lent,” I asked my colleague and friend Flower Pearson? Here’s what she had to say: “I’m lucky enough to have annual visits from my mum. Before she arrives I prepare; I clean, I dump as many commitments as I can, clearing my calendar to make space and time to anticipate her arrival. We spend time doing things I wouldn’t normally do — museums, galleries and scenic walks. We talk when I’m cleaning, shopping, when I get up and before I go to bed. When she leaves life feels like a house after the Christmas decorations have been put away.

Minister’s Minute ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT

All Saints Anglican Church

Emptier, gloomier but slightly more spacious and I choose what to return to its place. She’s in my thoughts; I call her more, I pray for her more. Over the months things slip back.

Life becomes cluttered and phone calls lessen in frequency. I really start to miss her. That’s usually when she calls to tell us when she will return. Jesus visits us for Lent. I prepare, I make space to spend time and money I would usually use for other things. I excuse myself and focus on Jesus. I love to be ‘gathered under his wings as a hen gathers her chicks’ but I know this level of commitment can’t continue. When the time comes that I miss his presence and find myself busy, and too distracted to allow his presence in my life, it’s nearly Lent again. Thank God!”

CrossFit South Delta is hosting the Open workouts, a competition “designed to be accessible to all athletes while rigorous enough to challenge the world’s fittest,” the event’s website notes. About 20 members of the local gym will be taking part. The competition begins tonight and runs once a week until March 25. “The top athletes in the world, they’re competing against everyone. But your average person, myself included, is just kind of seeing how you progressed from last year,” says CrossFit South Delta owner and head coach Jeordie Ker. “That’s the cool part about what we do, is seeing that improvement,” he says. Spectators are welcome to come to the gym and cheer the members on as they tackle the Open workouts. “We always have a good time. We always have a little bit of a party afterwards,” says Ker. He describes CrossFit as functional fitness. “We do functional movements as opposed to isolation movements,” Ker explains, adding that rather than using machines,

freeweights, bodyweight movements and a lot of isometric holds (i.e. planks) are done. The Open is described as the largest CrossFit community event of the season, with over 272,000 athletes from around the globe competing in 2015, according to the event’s website. This will be Tsawwassen’s Phil Hoskins first time taking part. The 58-yearold says he’s excited about the competition, which he says is more for seeing how well you’re doing personally, although it does give the ability to compare yourself to others in your age group. Babies and preschoolers benefit Town Centre hosting by attending library storytime Spring Break fun presented by Sublime Art Supplies & Gallery. All activities will take place in the interior hallways of the mall. Pre-registration is not required, however each child must be accompanied and supervised by an adult during each activity. The shops and services at the mall sponsor the annual event, which will run from March 14 to 18 and March 21 to 24. Activities start at 1 p.m. each day and end at either 2 or 3 p.m. For more information on the schedule of activities, visit www. TsawwassenTownCentreMall.com.

Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall is inviting all local school-aged children to take part in free activities during Spring Break. Each day, a local community group or partnering business will provide an interactive station with display booths, presentations and more. Activities will include a Taekwondo class and demonstration by Chang’s Taekwondo, a presentation by OWL, clay work with Delta Potters, cookie decorating with Thrifty Foods, lots of arts and crafts and two special event parties for St. Patrick’s Day and Easter

If you read to your child at home, what’s the point of coming to the library for storytime? It’s a hassle organizing everyone, getting out of the door on time and dealing with inclement weather. Why bother? It’s not only fun, but it’s a social opportunity for both the child and the caregiver with many pluses. Babytime helps little ones develop speech and language skills, while Storytime prepares older children to learn to read. It gets preschoolers ready for school.

They learn to sit still and be quiet, listen to another adult other than mom or dad and get the hang of taking turns. Parents discover (or rediscover) songs and rhymes to act out at home which will further support their child’s learning. Check out Babytime, Storytime or Pyjama Storytime at Delta libraries on the following dates and times: Babytime • Tsawwassen Library — Mondays until May 23 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. • George Mackie Library — Thursdays until May 26 from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

• Ladner Pioneer Library — Thursdays until May 26 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Storytime • George Mackie Library — Tuesdays until May 25 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. • Ladner Pioneer Library — Wednesdays until May 25 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. • George Mackie Library — Fridays until May 27 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. • Tsawwassen Library — Fridays until May 27 from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Pyjama Storytime • Ladner Pioneer Library — Tuesdays until May 24 from 6:30 to 7 p.m.

Pouka

New Zealand White Rabbit, White, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 2 years old) Pouka came to the shelter as a surrender from an overwhelmed rescue. She was found as a stray rabbit living outside, although she is familiar with people so she likely belonged to someone at some point. Pouka hasn’t been at the shelter long but she’s getting the hang of it pretty quickly. She is almost fully litter box trained, although prior to being spayed she occasionally would “mark” near other unspayed rabbits. After she’s settled we’ll see how she does with other bunnies, although she currently could be adopted alone. Pouka tolerates being handled, if you can catch her! If Pouka is unhappy with something she’ll squawk bark at you like a dog! If you don’t heed her warning she’ll nibble at your pant leg or a towel! There’s a whole lot of personality in this big white bunny. We believe Pouka is a New Zealand White Rabbit and therefore she may get a big bigger! She’s very good with an x-pen and hasn’t tried jumping the fences, so a home with a large rabbit run or a room would be ideal for this bunny as she’s too large for a cage. We suspect Pouka is about 2 years old - Rabbits can be a 10 year + commitment! Is there enough room in your family for Pouka’s big personality?

Is contact with nature important to mental health? Clinical psychologist Dr. Nancy Prober will review research supporting such a link during a talk in Tsawwassen next week. Interacting with nature can involve walking in city parks, tending a garden, birdwatching or engaging in activities in the wilderness. Even living in proximity to green space and having a view of a natural setting can have a positive impact on health. Presented by Delta Nature, the free lecture is set for Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church. Prober has over 12 years of experience as a clinical psychologist. She is currently in private practice at Changeways Clinic where she works with adults with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and trauma-related concerns. When she moved to Vancouver over six years ago, she became a member of Nature Vancouver and developed her interest in nature through hiking. She is pursuing training in ecopsychology. All ages are welcome at the Tsawwassen lecture.

Home not so sweet for Pacers

Senior boys basketball team bounced from Fraser Valley playoffs after pair of losses MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The next time the Delta Pacers earn the chance to host a league playoff tournament, they might want to decline. For the second straight year, the senior boys basketball team struggled on its home floor in the post-season and this time it resulted in a prompt exit. After going 9-1 to take top honours in the Fraser Valley West AAA League, Delta was stunned 81-72 by the eighth place North Delta Huskies on Tuesday, then eliminated 24 hours later after a heartbreaking 64-63 defeat to LA Matheson. It was a similar script to last season when the Pacers went unbeaten in the AAAA South League but ended up fourth in the Fraser Valley seeding tournament after not winning a game. This time, first place didn’t even guarantee spot in the Valley AAA finals. The Pacers needed to win two games to earn one of four berths up for grabs. They struggled to find their groove offensively in both outings, especially from the perimeter, while relying too much on standout Jas Singh. Delta finally heated up from behind the arc in the fourth quarter to take 58-54 lead over Matheson, before the fourth seeded Surrey school rallied to close out the game on a 10-5 run. Singh finished the night with 29 points — nearly half his team’s entire production. “That’s our weakness. When these teams are good as they are (our ability to generate offence other than three-point shots) can be exposed,” said Pacers head coach David Craig, who will have four of his five starters returning next season. “You can’t win with one guy scoring all your points. We have some young some kids who probably put too much pressure on themselves.” Delta ran into a Huskies team that looked vastly different than the one it beat by 17 points in regular season play back in early January. North Delta entered the playoffs coming off a pair of wins last week,

Delta Pacers Gurpaul Teja (left) and Jas Singh battle for possession during Wednesday’s 64-63 seasonending loss to LA Matheson at the Fraser Valley West AAA League playoff tournament. including a 12-point triumph over Matheson. The visitors took control of the game midway through the fourth quarter and played with tremendous poise down the stretch. “Our whole year has been inconsistent but the guys are finally starting to come together as a team and we haven’t had that all year,” said Huskies head coach Jaskriat Sodhan. “We have also had a lot of problems with injuries and the flu. Our starting point guard is still not here. “I told them before the game they had to play with aggression, much more than (the Pacers) do. Those guys were number one (in the league) for a reason. They are a really good team. We played with aggression and confidence and that’s the only way we can compete with those guys.”

Sodhan was also impressed with how his team closed out the game. The Huskies took care of the basketball, milked the clock on each possession and hit enough shots to foil any Pacer comeback bid. “That hasn’t happened all year. We are usually the team that gives up the lead,” he laughed. “That Matheson win was so big for this team and I’m really proud of these guys. “I told them we still have had plenty of work to do. This win won’t mean anything if we don’t back it up (with at least one more victory).” The Pacers entered the playoffs with not exactly loads of momentum. They didn’t look dominant in their final two league games against non-playoff teams Elgin Park and Frank Hurt. Singh was

also coming off the flu and missed the regular season finale. “We rely on the three ball a lot but you still have to be better than them when you are cold (from that range),” added Craig. “I was afraid (of this game) all week but our guys didn’t really believe it. “North Delta played very well. They got their confidence up and, when they started to make a few shots, realized they could play with us. They have some good athletes and their big guys can shoot.” Grade 11 Cam Gray was a force on the boards in both games for the Pacers, with 25 rebounds. Jackson Goodman added 20 to finish of his high school career. The Valley West AAA playoff tournament concludes tonight at DSS with the championship game between Southridge and Kwantlen Park at 6:45 p.m.

Ice Hawks look to complete playoff upset on weekend The defending Pacific Junior Hockey League champions weren’t going to go away that easy. The North Vancouver Wolf Pack fired 51 shots and posted a solid 4-0 victory over the Delta Ice Hawks on Tuesday night to extend the best-of-seven opening round series to a fifth game on Saturday. Delta was looking to complete a surprising four game sweep after finishing 21 points behind North Vancouver in the regular season standings. The Ice Hawks blitzed the Wolf Pack in the opening two games of the series to produced 5-0 and 9-3 victories. After grinding out a 2-1 game three win on Saturday, the tight-checking continued back in Ladner. The visitors opened the scoring early in the second period and added some

breathing room at the 7:32 mark of the third when Caleb Holonk’s point shot found its way through a maze of players and into the top corner. Delta had its chances to get back in the game but failed to convert a couple of power play opportunities in the third period and was 0-4 on the night. Jacob Latrace was terrific in the Delta net in a losing cause, while Trevor Withers earned first star honours with his 30 save performance at the other end. The Ice Hawks are looking for their first playoff series win in three years after bowing out the past two seasons to the Wolf Pack, including a four game sweep in 2015. Should the series go to a sixth game, it would be played back in Ladner at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Cheer trio help earn Florida invite A Tsawwassen trio has helped a Panther Cheer team qualify for a prestigious event in Tampa, Florida. The Richmond club’s Junior Level 3 Team will be heading to the D2 Summit in April thanks to its first place performance at the recent Spirit Cheer Best of the Northwest National Championships in Tacoma, Washington. The D2 Summit takes place a week after the USASF Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando and is designated for younger teams from smaller Cheer gyms with 125 or few athletes. The local girls on the team include: Faith Kwiatkowski, Michaela Watson and Madison Monti. They are now actively fundraising for their big trip, starting with a bottle drive on Sunday. A pub night and meat draws are also in the works.

Tsawwassen’s Faith Kwiatkowski, Michaela Watson and Madison Monti helped Panther Cheer win a competition in Tacoma, WA “It is such an incredible moment for this team of 14, ages 10-14, most of whom have been working and training together for the past six years or more,” said proud Panther Cheer coach Stephanie Kennedy.

Advertorial

Do you have good hearing but poor comprehension? Do you sometimes feel that you can hear well, but not fully understand what’s being said? This can be most evident in social conversations and watching television. Fortunately, there may be a solution for some people dealing with this type of hearing loss - the Audéo Venture hearing aid has been designed specifically to help improve speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. Poor comprehension in conversation can possibly be caused by undetected hearing loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear making it difficult to hear consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is even more challenging when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not consider themselves to have a hearing problem.

If inner-ear damage is present, a hearing care professional will determine the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then programmed into the hearing aids, which precisely take into account and balance the frequency range of the person being tested.

Ginette van Wijngaarden, from Connect Hearing proudly displays the Audéo Venture hearing aid. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying. Phonak Audéo Venture Hearing Aids This past year, Swiss audiologists have developed a hearing aid that can, in qualified candidates, improve speech comprehension for those with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can sign up for a free demonstration of the Audéo Venture hearing aids by calling now to do so. During your appointment, you will be given a hearing test and speech comprehension analysis.

The demonstration phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role the hearing aid technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The hearing aid recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this can significantly improve speech comprehension, especially in conversation for some clients. Want to find out more about the Audéo Venture hearing aid? CELEBRATIONS

Gerry was born in Ireland and grew up in London. After service in the Army he entered an apprentice program with a distinguished London pastry chef. This led to a career on the famous Cunard liner “Queen Mary” for many years as a pastry chef. Further training in Switzerland is where he met his wife-to-be. They moved to Toronto and began a long career in the bakery business. On his retirement, Gerry moved to Ladner where he enthusiastically joined the business and volunteer communities. He loved to walk around town and talk to everyone and was always eager to travel. Friends are gathering on Sunday March 6 to remember Gerry. Join us at 1pm at the Kirkland House for tea and coffee. It is at 4140 Arthur Drive in Ladner and is wheelchair accessible.
