Putting some risk back in play

Delta heeds research that says not to ‘bubble wrap’ kids SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s time to stop bubble wrapping our kids. That’s the rationale behind Delta’s move to encourage new types of playgrounds, ones that are more of a throwback that reintroduce risk through natural play. Ken Kuntz, Delta’s director of parks, recreation and culture,

said there’s substantial research on the benefits on reintroducing risk into play environments. “There’s more studies that indicate that kids don’t know their risk tolerance level and we’ve had experts and various reports and speakers to our (parks, recreation and culture) commission from the University of British Columbia indicating that we’ve become so protective of our children that they don’t

understand where their risk tolerance is,” he said. “One of the ways we can reintroduce kids to risk is to create playgrounds that are a little bit more adventurous. CHILDREN: see Page 3 PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI

Playgrounds are going old school these days as research suggests society has become too protective of children.

Late winter storm lashes coast

Delta escapes with localized flooding in Boundary Bay and Beach Grove JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Areas of Boundary Bay and Beach Grove were hit with localized flooding yesterday morning as a late winter storm battered the south coast. The Corporation of Delta warned of a possible storm surge Wednesday afternoon after Environment Canada

issued several wind and rainfall warnings for coastal areas. The storm, combined with a high tide at just after 6 a.m., caused some flooding. The tide came in at 15.5 feet, however with the storm surge water levels were pushed to 18 feet at around 6 a.m., said George Harvie, Delta’s chief administrative officer.

Municipal crews were on the scene, monitoring the storm and assisting residents affected by flooding. Conditions in Ladner were also monitored and the municipality took the precautionary step of sandbagging areas along Chisholm Street. Delta urged residents to stay away from the shoreline and nearby areas

for safety reasons, and to allow crews to respond effectively and immediately. Delta began monitoring weather conditions Wednesday afternoon and activated the emergency operations centre early yesterday morning. “We always prepare in the fall for the winter storms,” Mayor Lois Jackson said from the

CONTINUED from Page 1 “It doesn’t make them unsafe but creates an opportunity for them to climb out on a ledge or up a balance beam or up a stump of natural logs. The studies also indicate that this is a really important developmental aspect of children as they reach challenges later in life, so they’ll have better coping mechanism as well when faced with societal challenges,” Kuntz said.

The new policy encouraging more natural play features in playgrounds is now part of cost-sharing agreements the municipality has with parent advisory groups. Delta’s policy remains unchanged for a standard playground as those projects will continue to see the municipality contribute 50 per cent to a maximum of $35,000. However, for a playground using more natural play elements, Delta would

provide up to $45,000 as well as up to $5,000 for a professional landscape architecture service to come up with the design. Kuntz told the Optimist natural play spaces that reintroduce risk into children’s play can already be seen around the Lower Mainland, including at Simon Fraser University and at Terra Nova Park in Richmond. to introduce natural play elements into the existing playground and waterpark at Annieville Park. Research from UBC and the Child & Family Research Institute at B.C. The mayor also said staff would continue to monitor weather conditions into today.

erning how high or how fast a child can go brings too much order to playgrounds, making them unappealing to children. “The experts say poor professional responses to tragedies is behind the mind shift to bubble wrap children. This resulted in a change in perception of kids being confident and independent to being vulnerable and needing to be overly cared for,” the report states.

Holocaust survivor Alex Buckman shared traumatic stories from his childhood during a presentation for students Tuesday at South Delta Secondary. Buckman, originally from Brussels, was born Oct. 31, 1939. Ten months later the Nazis invaded

Belgium. “Then everything changed for my family,” he said. He explained how, for his protection, he was placed with different families, but that was dangerous because the Germans told anyone that helped Jewish people would be sent to concentration camps too. Eventually, when he was four, he was sent to an orphanage in Namur, two hours from Brussels. His cousin Anny had also been sent there. He was told she was his sister. “What I didn’t know is that my father had made an arrangement for my cousin to be there as well. He also made arrangements that our last name would be changed so that Anny and I would be known as brother and sister instead of cousins. Why? Because if anything would happen to our parents, at least the two of us could stay together.” Buckman lost his parents during the Holocaust. He said they were turned in to the Gestapo and sent to Auschwitz concentration camp. They were murdered in 1943, he said. Buckman described how he and others had to hide in a cellar during his time at the orphanage. It was on top of a hill and the supervisors could see when trucks, full of Nazis, were coming, he said. He said boys would be picked and told to go down through two big doors, concealed by furniture and carpets, into a cellar. “It was pitch black. And it smelled awful.”

Alex Buckman addresses SDSS students Tuesday in Tsawwassen.

They asked, “’Why do we have to go? We didn’t do anything,’” he said. The wooden doors were closed and the carpets and furniture were put back. “It was so scary,” he said. The kids heard lots of noise, like footsteps from boots and yelling in a language they didn’t understand. Eventually it became quiet again and they were asked to come out. The first time it happened Buckman was only four. “From four to six-anda-half it happened too many times,” he said. “So many years after, I still can’t sleep without lights throughout the house.” Buckman came to Canada with his cousin, aunt and uncle in 1951 when he was 11. He left Montreal and came to Vancouver in his early 20s. Tuesday’s event in Tsawwassen, which was organized through the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre, also included a talk by historian Chris Friedrichs, a short film presentation and a question-andanswer session with students.

When it comes to seniors, the province’s advocate had lots to talk about at a presentation in Ladner this week. Hosted by the Delta Seniors Planning Team, nearly a full house attended a Tuesday afternoon presentation at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre to hear what Isobel Mackenzie had to say on a wide range from topics impacting the older generation in Delta and throughout province. B.C. is the only province to have a seniors advocate and, since 2014, several reports have been prepared on pressing issues such as housing needs, gaps in information, prescription drug use, residential care and caregiver distress. Mackenzie said there are concerns about an explosion of seniors in B.C. when, in fact, the current level of people 65 and over in the province will grow from 17 per cent to 24 per cent over the next 16 years. “There are countries in other parts of the world who are already at 24 per cent of their population age 65 and over, and their sky hasn’t fallen and world hasn’t collapsed. So we have time to make the thoughtful kinds of decisions we need to plan the way we need to plan,” she said. Estimates have the 65-and-over segment in Delta at approximately 15,455, which represents 14.6 per cent of the overall population. That number is expected to grow by about 7,754 people by

2020. Saying the majority of seniors will never need to reside in a care home, and that two-thirds of those 85 and over are still living on their own and on their own dime, Mackenzie said seniors have the lowest income levels. The median income for those 75 and over is just $22,000, a big problem particularly when it comes to renters. Mackenzie noted many seniors are not accessing programs and subsidies they’re entitled to in order to make their lives easier and reduce their financial strain. Rising costs are also a big problem for those who own their own homes but don’t have a lot of money to live in their golden years. “A million-dollar home doesn’t put food on the table or give you a new roof if your house needed it,” Mackenzie said. Other concerns include a finding that about nine per cent of B.C.’s population over the age of 75 cannot hold a conversation in English. She also talked about caregiver distress and how more is needed to support those caring for a loved one at home. While less than four per cent of seniors live in residential care, many are being put in care homes when there are other forms of assisted housing that would be more appropriate, the advocate said. Health Minister Terry Lake this week announced amendments to the Community Care and Assisted Living Act that he said would mean better care options and added protection for those in assisted-living residences.

he George Massey Tunnel got us into Vancouver, but its replacement appears to be all about access to Richmond. One of many beefs about the 10-lane, $3.5-billion bridge that’s scheduled to open in 2022 is that all it’s going to do is move the daily bottleneck at the antiquated tube further north to the Oak Street Bridge. It’s a lot of money, the argument goes, to simply shift gridlock a few kilometres along the corridor. It certainly would be, but that’s presuming all traffic northbound on Highway 99 is headed into Vancouver. While reading through the Project Definition Report on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, one number in particular jumped out at me in regards to driving destinations. I had heard project director Geoff Freer use the figure on a couple of occasions, along with others familiar with the massive undertaking, but given historical traffic patterns it was difficult to compute. After all, the tunnel was just the first of a pair of river crossings to get into the big city. The number I refer to is 59 — as in 59 per cent of traffic heading north through the tunnel on weekdays is bound for Richmond. That comes as a head scratcher, but traffic counts done for the province show only 40 per cent of vehicles using the tunnel end up in Vancouver (the other one per cent is destined for Burnaby/New Westminster). The southbound figures are even more pronounced as 65 per cent of the traffic that heads through the tube on weekdays originates in Richmond, with only 34 per cent coming from Vancouver. These numbers suggest that as much as the tunnel is still a significant link to the big city, traffic patterns have changed over time to the point where a new bridge is more about moving vehicles from Delta/Surrey to Richmond, and vice versa, as it is about getting them to and from Vancouver. That’s not to suggest it will be smooth sailing on the Oak Street and Knight Street bridges come 2022. Their capacity won’t have changed, and when an easier time crossing the south arm is coupled with an increase in development south of the river, it will undoubtedly lead to more congestion. That’s not good unless, of course, you’re only going as far as Richmond.

Delta continues to lead way on agricultural education

T

he chair of Delta’s agricultural advisory committee, Coun. Ian Paton, asked myself and the Delta school district’s district principal of inquiry and innovation, Brooke Moore, to give an update on Project Pickle and the Farm Roots mini-school to the committee this past Tuesday. Also delegating on the evening were Kent Mullinix and Corine Singfield of Kwantlen Polytechnic University who gave a wonderful presentation on the goings on at the TFN Farm School. Did you know there was such a thing? Well, there is and it is very cool indeed. The school is a collaboration between KPU’s Institute for Sustainable Food Systems and the TFN. The TFN Farm School is a 10-month program for adults that is run on an eight-hectare (20-acre) plot adjacent to the Backroads Family Farm Market on 52nd Street. The school is about to start its third year of operation and has big plans as do all of us who support education around agriculture in Delta. The comprehensive program boasts a traditional medicine garden, a mixed fruit orchard, an organic market garden, farm animals and incubator plots for the students that graduate from the program. The TFN Farm School is billed as a gathering place to raise awareness around human-scaled alternative food production sys-

tems. There is not a city, municipality or school district in the province, or perhaps Canada, that is as engaged with agri-literacy as we are here in Delta. It won’t be long before our successes will be followed by other regions in the province. There has already been expressions of interest from school districts in the lower Fraser Valley, the Okanagan and from the Comox Valley and Saanich Peninsula on Vancouver Island. In the Farm Roots presentation, Graham Harkley, who will be running the show on the ground, noted there are already 24 students registered for the “ground breaking” program. They could take as many as 35, which would be a huge statement as to the interest in farm-related career opportunities down the road for our kids. My job will be to continue to steer the young kids toward

programming at the high school level. I am guaranteed a couple of good laughs a day, which makes it all worthwhile. At Monday’s Delta council meeting, I was appointed to the agricultural advisory committee so I stayed for a delegation from the Ministry of Transportation that gave an update on the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. Of particular interest to the committee was the perceived notion of loss of farmland. The delegation noted there will likely be a net gain of land through changes to the interchanges on the route. You should check out https://engage.gov.bc.ca/masseytunnel/faq/ for more detail. Local farmer Brent Kelly asked several excellent questions about farm vehicle access to overpasses and the like, and the ministry staff acknowledged they had learned several lessons from the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Other business of the committee, from culverts and irrigation, and from zoning to legalities concerning farm succession, makes it abundantly clear that the complexities of living in a farming community are many. It is a good thing so many groups and individuals are networking to figure it all out for our collective benefit. Nominal toll for all crossings

(upgrades) and less congested? I thought of a 25-cent charge per crossing, which would equal 75 cents each way, less than the cost of a coffee that we all seem to enjoy and don’t think twice about buying daily. This relatively inexpensive fee would add up quickly when you multiply it by how many vehicles use the crossings daily. There needs to be an incentive to utilize the tolled bridges, and if we all pay a little on every bridge/tunnel today, maybe people will start driving in their respective areas, instead of driving loops to save a couple bucks daily. Norm Janssen

Young family is priced out of Ladner

Editor: It’s official! We are screwed. Now that I have your attention, I want to bring to your attention some problems that some families are facing in Ladner. My husband and I moved to this beautiful community eight years ago with our son and decided to rent. As time moved on, we had two more children and have waited and waited to buy a house. Well, we have certainly missed the boat and now we can never afford to buy a place

to call home in Ladner. To add to this we have been given 60 days to find a new place to live due to our landlord tearing down the house to build something bigger and better. Upon investigating houses to rent in Ladner, we have discovered we can no longer afford to even rent in this beautiful community where I raised my three children. Why has the rent gone up so much? Is it because owners know young families can no longer buy in this community and know

they can charge a small fortune? This is new problem for some young families like us. I find it extremely frustrating that someone who is born and raised (in Richmond) can no longer buy a house or even rent without going into debt. I need to move away from the place my kids call home and move away from my aging parents, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends. This is a really difficult and sad time for my generation. traffic is only frustrating (at times) coming home at 5 p.m. as we are on the road early at 5 a.m. before the morning rush. In my opinion, we need to have the new tolled crossings used now, and equally shared, to alleviate heavier traffic on the Alex Fraser Bridge, Pattullo Bridge and George Massey Tunnel, and to let the people in those areas off the hook of carrying the financial burden of the tolls. Because I only use the tunnel, I have thought of the commuters going into the Vancouver core, and to be fair it would get costly quite quickly if tolls were too expensive. Everyone should be concerned about LNG plans for Tilbury

Editor: Re: FortisBC defends safety record, letter to the editor, March 4 Claiming it is safe to store and transport LNG, FortisBC chastises the Burns Bog Conservation Society for raising concerns about the liquefied natural gas operations on Tilbury Island. The writer states that LNG is non-flammable and spilled LNG simply evaporates. However, she fails to mention that vapours released from spilled LNG can become flammable if not properly and safely managed, and can lead to explosions under unsafe conditions. Furthermore, the vapour can be an asphyxiant in confined spaces. These properties have led to fires, explosions and fatalities. The FortisBC letter fails

to acknowledge the grave risks and hazards associated with LNG production and transport that are recognized internationally. There is also failure to disclose the B.C. government has permitted FortisBC Tilbury to expand its LNG production 56 times larger than the current operation with longterms plans for 90 times. Additionally, the National Energy Board approved a license for WesPac Tilbury, on the adjacent property, to annually export the FortisBC LNG up to 3.5 million tonnes for 25 years. The public was not consulted and an environmental assessment was not required for any of these decisions. This LNG production and export are putting the public at great risk as they contravene international

LNG terminal siting standards as outlined by the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO). The standards claim LNG ports must be located where they do not conflict with other waterway uses as all other vessels must be considered as ignition sources. The narrow, highly populated lower Fraser River, and narrow shipping lanes through the Gulf Islands, do not meet the international safety standards of wide exclusion zones. So without due process, without environmental assessments and without meeting international standards of LNG terminals and transport, not just the Burns Bog Conservation Society, but all Canadians should be concerned. Susan Jones

Revocation of citizenship an empty gesture

Editor: Re: Sunny days are already being filled with clouds, letter to the editor, March 2 The Liberal government is following through on the election promise to repeal parts of the bill that revoked citizenship from dual nationals who have been convicted of offenses such as spying, treason or terrorism. The previous Conservative government had devised this measure (Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act) to create the illusion it was taking effective measures to protect Canadians. The convicted terrorist, Zakaria Amara, is a dual

national who was born in Jordan and lived there until the age of four. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment. If he were to ever be released from prison, it would be next to impossible to deport him to Jordan, since Canada does not deport people to countries where they are likely to be tortured or executed. In this case, revocation of citizenship is an empty gesture. It would be more punitive to take away his library card. Actual terrorists are unlikely to be deterred by revocation of Canadian citizenship. This measure does nothing to protect

Canadians. It did create two classes of Canadians and opened the possibility of additional punitive measures against Canadians who are not, as Stephen Harper termed, “old stock.” Like much of the other Conservative legislation, this was mean minded and ineffective. It was designed to gain votes from people who have a shallow understanding of its impact. It would have done nothing to reduce the fears of Bernard C. Barton that, in the absence of this law, “… we can expect potential terrorists to be roaming about Canada.” Tom Steele

Examine other options for Hwy. 99 corridor

Editor: How does our B.C. government arrive at the decision to build a 10-lane bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel?

Can it be legally challenged? What democratic process can halt what appears to be an irrevocable decision? We know something needs to be done about the delays on Highway 99, but have all the options received enough research and consideration? Is this another huge expenditure that will add to the community debt without fullest exposure of all the factor for public consideration and input? Will the bridge prove to be another white elephant, and at the same time radically change farmland, and ecology, merely transferring congestion north

and south? Dealing with the traffic congestion in the Lower Mainland now requires an improved co-ordinated planning effort through an open public process. So far we have piecemeal results, with spot tolling, uneconomic new bridges and what seems to be some background (and suspect) motivators. Surely there is time to examine the way many other nations have grappled with these problems. The allocation of financial resources for best effect should be predominant, with more concern for the folk who will be affected. Peter Duffey

Family doctor shortage needs more attention

Opinion

There are some hopeful signs in South Delta but MLA maintains more needs to be done

I

n the last two to three weeks, my office has been flooded with people searching for a new family doctor after learning their GP was retiring. Being set adrift without a doctor who is familiar with your medical history can be a harrowing experience, especially if you require regular medical visits or tests. Retiring doctors commonly transfer their patients’ medical records to a private storage company. That company then charges a fee to retrieve the records. Depending on the patient’s needs, these fees can be upwards of $100. If someone is receiving income or disability assistance, they can contact the company to have the fee reduced to $25 (something which is not advertised). Everyone else is stuck with the higher bill. This practice is simply unacceptable. It adds insult to injury for those who are urgently searching for a new doctor. If the government can’t resolve the current GP shortage, then at a minimum it should cover the document-transfer fees of patients who lose their family doctor and have nowhere else to turn. In 2010, the provincial government promised to “provide every British Columbian who wants a family doctor with one by 2015.” It was an ambitious goal: at the time, an estimated 176,000 British Columbians were looking for a family physician. And last year, the minister of

MLA’s Report

health said that number had climbed to nearly 210,000.

The GP shortage presents a real challenge for people in South Delta. According to the Ministry of Health, there may be over 2,000 people looking for a family doctor in our community. The GP shortage presents a real challenge for people in South Delta. According to the Ministry of Health, there may be over 2,000 people looking for a family doctor in our community. For the moment, they are out of luck. Each GP’s practice serves 1,000 to 2,000 patients, so unless new family doctors replace

those that retire, more people in South Delta will be looking for help. Luckily, however, the Delta Division of Family Practice has worked hard to recruit new members and it appears we can expect new doctors to start arriving in town over the coming months. There will be a lag before everyone set adrift by a retiring physician is paired up with a new one, but at least there is hope on the horizon. If you’re looking for a family doctor in South Delta and want to be notified when one is taking patients, you can contact the Delta Division of Family Practice to be put on the list. Call 604-9435591, email delta@ divisionsbc.ca or visit www.divisionsbc.ca/ delta. If you don’t mind having your GP in North Delta, you can visit the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia’s website at cpsbc.ca and search for doctors accepting new patients. My constituency office also has a list of doctors in North Delta who are presently taking patients. The provincial government has done some good work trying to attract new doctors to the province. And so has the Delta Division of Family Practice worked hard to bring physicians to Delta. But when one retirement can leave over 1,000 patients with no doctor, it is clear there’s still serious work to do.

The South Delta Probus Club will get an update on the progress of the Tsawwassen First Nation mall development at this month’s meeting. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. This month’s speaker is Mark Fenwick, general manager of Tsawwassen Mills. Featuring 200 stores and a 1,100-seat food court, the 1.2-millionsquare-foot Tsawwassen Mills is currently under construction at Highway 17 and 52nd Street. It’s being built alongside Tsawwassen Commons, a 550,000-square-foot centre with approximately 100 tenants, including Walmart, Canadian Tire and Rona. Both are sched-

uled to open this October. Fenwick has 19 years of operations and marketing experience with Tsawwassen Mills owner and developer Ivanhoe Cambridge. He moved to Tsawwassen last May from Nanaimo where he was general manager of Woodgrove Centre, the largest enclosed mall on Vancouver Island. Probus is a worldwide fellowship club for retired and semi-retired professional and business people. The association is non-political and nonfundraising, and allows members to enjoy fellowship and activities that stimulate the mind and body. The club has no attendance requirement and is just focused on presentations, outings and having fun.

James

Rottweiler/Husky Mix Breed, Black and Tan, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 6 years old) James is a Traveling Tails Transfer from the NWT SPCA. He’s a goofy dog who absolutely LOVES to snuggle and lean on his favorite people! It is believed that James may have never lived in a home before but we believe he will adjust to this “pampered” living lifestyle quickly. He is very exuberant and barky around dogs but is generally social with them once he knows they mean him no harm. Continuing his socialization with good, easy-going, friendly dogs is paramount so he can see that “city” dogs are just as friendly as the dogs “back home”. James needs an experienced family who can help James adjust to this new “city” living. He is also a strong dog so a home with older children to adults would be ideal. James is great with the cats he has met so far and would be OK going to a home with a dog-social cat. Are you looking for a goofy, happy, bouncy dog? THIS is the dog for you! James has some issues with his hips and degenerative joint disease in his elbows so please contact the shelter and talk to our veterinary technician if you are interested in this good looking boy.

Earlier this week, on one of those nature shows on TV, I learned about mudskippers — air-breathing amphibious fish that live in inter-tidal mudflats. They lay their eggs in burrows deep beneath the mud. Because the burrows have no oxygen, the mudskipper fish travels to the surface where it gulps a mouthful of air and then swims back down into the burrow where it releases the air to bathe the eggs in life-giving oxygen. The mudskipper repeats this trip hundreds of times until the eggs are hatched. I was struck by the “commitment” and selfsacrifice it expends on behalf of the eggs in order to ensure their survival. I couldn’t help but wonder whether we who pride ourselves in being more

advanced members of the animal kingdom have the same commitment toward one another. I’m specifically thinking about our commitment to persons with disabilities. If a disabled person were to ask any one of us (as one did on her blog), “Do you think I have a right to exist?” our answer would

of course be yes! And yet the provincial government, in its budget last month chose to keep disability rates under $1,000 — far below the poverty line of $14,500 for B.C. Many people on disability benefits cannot afford to even meet the basic needs of a living organism, let alone those of a human being. As one person put it, “Living so far below the poverty line is more disabling than my disability.” Theologian Jürgen Molten remind us: Disability always has two sides: on the one side is the person who is disabled, on the other, the one who disables. The person with disabilities is robbed of his human rights. That’s inhumane. But the one who disables also loses his humanity because he acts in an inhumane way.

Debut novel for retired realtor Tsawwassen’s Cindy Havdale says writing her first book was a fun experience DAVE WILLIS

etired South Delta realtor Cindy Havdale has released her debut

novel. She describes The Realtor as a “fast-paced little book.” She says it’s a fun read with some romance mixed in and quite a bit of mys-

tery. “I’ve always wanted to write. When I was in real estate just so many things were happening all the time. I was a very busy realtor. You meet all kinds of people and all kinds of events happen,” she says. “I just always thought, ‘Gosh, that would be a neat story…’” The main character of the novel is Liv Grisdale, a single, top-producing real-

tor. Havdale describes her as strong, hardworking, ethical and fun-loving. “The action revolves around the listing and sale of a Langley farm,” according to a press release. “The task of selling the farm becomes increasingly complicated as the relationships between the characters unfold, and events occur beyond the realtor’s control.” It also notes while

Havdale is a retired realtor, the stories and characters in the book are fictional. “It was fun,” Havdale says, describing what the process of writing the novel was like for her. “I took a bunch of writing courses right after I retired so that really got me going and helped a lot. “I read all the time. I’ve always loved to read. I have to say it was easy. I just sat at the computer

and started writing. I had a story in mind.” She “basically self-published” the novel through FriesenPress, a Victoriabased company. Havdale says she’s already working on a sequel. She says she hopes to have it finished within a year. The Realtor is available at Albany Books in Tsawwassen and through online retailers.

Ladner’s Wilson to perform at Motown Meltdown DAVE WILLIS

Ladner’s Garfield Wilson will be one of the performers at next weekend’s Motown Meltdown benefit show in Vancouver. Wilson, a singer, actor and personal trainer, has a “very special Michael Jackson tribute planned with a surprise at the end.” This will mark Wilson’s approximately eighth year performing at Meltdown,

an event he says he absolutely loves. It includes a number of artists performing along with a 12-piece band. Wilson is still running his personal training business but says he’s also been very fortunate to be cast in some great TV shows filmed in Vancouver. “Last year ended with a recurring role on the final season of The Continuum and a small guest spot on

Garfield Wilson iZombie. This year I’ve been cast in a couple of episodes of the CBS series

ZOO (second season) and a new Disney series,” he says. Proceeds from Motown Meltdown will benefit Seva Canada’s sustainable and innovative blindness prevention and treatment programs in 13 of the poorest places in the world, a press release notes. “It’s going to be such a fabulous night of entertainment by some of Canada’s amazing vocal-

ists while benefiting Seva, a Canadian organization based in Vancouver, that has been giving the power of sight to those most in need in developing countries for over 33 years,” says executive director Penny Lyons in the release. The concert is set for Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Tickets are $32 at www. ticketmaster.ca or $42 at the door.

Revved up to go RV-ing the Rideau Canal JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

The Rideau Canal, flowing between Kingston and Ottawa, was built as a defensible waterway after the War of 1812. Although never needed for this purpose, it has continued to operate since 1832. Thanks to 47 locks, boats can navigate the varying water elevations by floating up when the tubs are filled and dropping down when they’re emptied. And beyond every park-like station are unique vistas: bird-loving wetlands and sliver-thin canals — some etched out of limestone, others embraced by Canadian Shield. It’s truly an aquatic route of untarnished beauty. But if you’re more of an earth-lover than a waterbaby, fear not. RV-ing the Rideau can be equally rewarding. Highway 401, a.k.a. MacDonald Cartier Freeway, is a main thoroughfare that spans the canal. And branching away from this artery are capillary-like country roads that take RVers to Rideau riches. All you have to do is pack, gas up and go. Northern Section Ottawa, Hartwells and Hog’s Back locks are located within Canada’s capital. Here, you can take in some of the nearby culture or pedal the path that connects these three scenic settings. Black Rapids: Although steamships once plied these waters, international

If you feel like shacking up with a little comfort, the riverside Monterey Inn that overlooks this station will certainly meet your needs. http://www.montereyinn. com Highway 43 parallels one side of the Rideau and Highway 16 the other. Both run adjacently from here to Smith Falls. Check out landmarks like the 1860s grist mill in Manotick, the Baxter Conservation area in Kars and Rideau’s oldest church in Burritts Rapids. Tel: 613-989-2058 Central Section Off Highway 43 Merrickville offers everything from quaint shops to a first-class history lesson. Take a tour of the 1832 blockhouse and sample the amazing mustards at Mrs. McGarrigle’s Deli. Kilmarnock and Edmonds are next in line, followed closely by Old Slys and Smiths Falls locks. These last two stations are lumped together. At 7.9 metres (26 feet), it’s the greatest single lift on the canal and is a real mustsee, even if you’re not floating in it. Smiths Falls and “Heart of the Rideau” is the largest community on the corridor. The Railway

Museum retraces its tracks from the 1800s to 1979. And Heritage House shares the Rideau’s past; the struggles and turmoil of its creator, Colonel John By, the devastation and hardship of its Irish immigrant workers and the timeline that led to its success. From here, keep hugging onto Highway 34 for just a little longer. The pretty town of Perth is just up the road. Green space embraces its 200-year-old storefronts, and rimming one edge is the Tay Canal, a tree-bordered tributary that flows into Lower Rideau Lake. RV Parks: Victoria Park www.town.smiths-falls.

Southern Section Aside from the occasional detour, Highway 15 connects the remaining eight stations (total of 15 locks). If you’re an angler, you’ll want to catch Newboro — or at least one of its largemouth bass. Though now laid-back, life here wasn’t always so. Building the lock station at this highpoint between Ottawa and Kingston raised a lot of havoc in 1829. Over 300 workers were brought here to blast away the rugged bedrock, and many of

them fell ill to the retched Lake Fever, a death-taker that was later diagnosed as malaria. RVing back on Highway 15, veer off at Chaffeys and Davis Locks, head in the other direction to uncover Elgin’s intriguing history or pull into Jones Falls, one of the largest engineering marvels en route. Four locks need to be navigated at this station to conquer the water levels that span 18 metres. A blacksmith shop, lockmaster’s home and visitors centre are featured along a self-guided tour, and topping it off is the stone arch dam that supports the powerful force of Sand Lake. This amazing wall of limestone spans 107 metres and is 19.5 metres high. On this final stretch, Highway 15 closely parallels the Rideau. Check out the full services at Seeley’s Bay, picnic at Upper Brewers and listen to the rumble of trains as they whiz above at Kingston Mills. And if you haven’t seen enough scenic sites, hop back into your home on wheels and retrace your treads. The Rideau is riddled with so many rewards you’ll enjoy it just as much the second time around. Guild members have ‘Visions of Spring’ New exhibition, with nearly 70 original paintings, runs through to April 3 at Gallery 1710 NOREEN FAIRWEATHER

Optimist contributor

The energy and excitement that blesses the end of winter has been picked up at the South Delta Artists Guild’s Gallery 1710, where the latest show, Visions of Spring, demonstrates the talents, skills and amazing originality of many of its 140 members. Gallery 1710, next to the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen, became the guild’s home base in 2000 through a rental agreement with the Corporation of Delta. Thanks to the enthusiasm, foresight and hard work of this voluntary society’s membership, Gallery 1710 can justifiably claim to be one of the most vital inspirations of visual art in the Lower Mainland, as the range of work in Visions of Spring demonstrates. Imagination often governs interpretation of a subject and works with a choice of size and mate-

lage mixes bursting with energy, brilliantly colourful acrylic landscapes,

abstract paintings large and small, work in pen and ink, portraits, wildlife,

still life — each painting offering something special to the viewer.

Look at the work of Jan Rankin and find the amethysts. Examine the outstanding scratchboard technique of Darlene Flaade, the bold tulips of Jean Dalgleish, the fun of Irina Florov. Check art by Sharee Reynolds, Eileen Fong, Marlene Strain and Ellen Hines. There are nearly 70 original paintings in Visions of Spring by artists becoming increasingly recognized, and at modest prices. There is also an outstanding selection of matted but unframed art available for sale in Gallery 1710’s lobby bin for those who might wish to select their own framing. Visions of Spring runs through to April 3. Gallery 1710 is open to the public Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The guild also has ongoing drop-in programs for people wishing to learn informally about art. Ice Hawks anxious to earn split

Delta will be in must win mode Saturday as they look to even semi-final series MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta Ice Hawks could be firing on all cylinders at the end of their semi-final series with the Grandview Steelers. They just have to get there first. The Steelers scored three unanswered goals in the final period for a 5-2 game three win on Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre to take a 2-1 lead in the Pacific Junior Hockey League Tom Shaw Conference final. Game five is on Saturday night at the LLC (7:35 p.m.) in what could be the start of a fourgames-in-five-nights stretch in the best-of-seven affair. “It will be our biggest game of the year,” said Ice Hawks head coach Darren Naylor. “We battled hard (in game two) to get home court then we lost it. We have to win again and turn this into a best-of-three.” Delta is expecting to have rugged two-way veteran Mark Trotman back on Saturday for possibly the first of four line-up additions if the series reaches six games. Speedster Gary Dhaliwal will return for game five Sunday afternoon (4 p.m.) at the Burnaby Winter Club after serving a threegame suspension for a kneeing major in the series opener. The Ice Hawks will also have the opportunity to add affiliate players following the weekend. Delta Hockey Academy U18 forwards Nick Wilson and Isaac Embree are winding down their season at the league championship tournament in Penticton. Both had significant roles in Delta’s first round series win over North Vancouver. Even not being at full strength, Naylor was disappointed with

Delta Ice Hawks Sam Kozlowski works his way towards the net during his second period goal in Tuesday’s 5-2 game three loss to the Grandview Steelers. The Hawks now trail the series 2-1. his team’s start Tuesday as the Steelers jumped out to an early 2-0 second period lead. Rookie Sam Kozlowski pulled the Ice Hawks within one on a spectacular rush and Michael Schellenberg tied the game 30 seconds into the third period when he banged home a rebound. Delta seemed to have all the momentum until Schellenberg received a boarding minor — a

call that infuriated the Ice Hawks staff. They killed the penalty but the Steelers struck for a pair of goals soon after in a 54-second span to take control again. “We just weren’t ready to battle at the start of the game,” continued Naylor. “The first period we just wanted to play the outside perimeter game and that’s what they want you to do. We just can’t play that way. You have to take the

hacks and whacks and get to the greasy areas where we ended up scoring our goals. “They are a well-coached veteran team that can capitalize on mistakes. They can also bore you to death until you make a mistake. When you look at the amount of first-year players we have, this is a young team and, sometimes, our inexperience shows when we do make mistakes.”

Delta Hockey Academy adding girls team next season The Delta Hockey Academy has made official the expansion of its competitive program to include a team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s Female Varsity Division for the 2016-2017 season. Coached by Owen Pighin, the Wild will be the only Lower Mainland entry, joining three

other programs at this tier — Banff Hockey Academy, Cour d’ Alene Hockey Academy (Idaho) and Shawnigan Lake School. The CSSHL also has a Female Prep Division that will feature six teams next season from the four Western Canadian provinces. The two competitive tiers are part of the

expanded new look to the CSSHL Female Division with the insertion of a full, competitive regular season game schedule, along with post-season games. Up until now, girls have been eligible to enroll in the academy but only DHA’s noncompetitive Hockey Skills Program.

ClosecallforTunnelTownrink

A Tunnel Town rink came ever-so-close to being a provincial champion. The Cody Tanaka foursome reached the final of last week’s 2016 AMJ Campbell B.C. Mixed Curling Championships before falling 7-1 to the Wes Craig’s Vancouver Island rink. The event was hosted at the Qualicum District Curling Club and featured teams made up of two male and two female players in a triple knockout format. Tanaka’s rink, that also featured Shawna Jensen, Brian Cole and Chantel Kosmynka, advanced directly to the championship game after defeating Craig 7-6 in the Page 1v2 playoff. Craig then had

to beat Team Buchy (5-3) to earn another shot at Tanaka. A steal of four in the sixth end after an unfortunate pick sealed the deal for the Island team. It was the third BC Mixed Curling title for Craig, who is also a three-time BC Senior Men’s champion. The rink also features Miles Craig, who is also a former Mixed champion, with experience at the national level of juniors too, while Kesa and Marika Van Osch are both seasoned champions. Kesa won the BC junior title in 2012 and the BC women’s title in 2014 and Marika captured the BC junior title in 2012, 2014 and again earlier this year.

Team Tanaka includes (left to right) Chantel Kosmynka (lead), Brian Cole (second), Shawna Jensen (third) and Cody Tanaka (skip).

South Delta Midget C1 Storm capture PCAHA league banner

South Delta Midget C1 Storm girls hockey team went 18-3-3 in PCAHA league play

Join us for a fun-filled morning of free family activities!

It was another strong campaign for the South Delta Minor Hockey’s Girls Program with the Midget C1 Storm capturing the Blue Group in Pacific Coast Amateur regular season play. The Storm posted an 18-3-3 overall record, while securing all of their sportsmanship points and leading the way in goals against average. The girls closed their league schedule on a four game unbeaten streak and won a key season series against second place North Shore Winter Club. 2-1. “This championship team is made up of outstanding athletes with great attitudes!” said proud head coach

Todd Jackson. “They all worked together to have fun and create the success they achieved.” The Storm include: Claire Kozak (goalie), Lexine Ashe, Hannah Benjamin, Sophie Cook, Madeline Davies, Cayla Edwards, Brooklyn Hawksworth, Lauren Howlett, Layne Jackson, Chloe Jacob, Jenny Manojlovic, Julia McDougall, Elise Ridley, Denae Turko, Paisley Wallace and Juliana White. Rounding out the coaching staff are Dave Ashe, Dan Hawksworth and Grant Wallace. The team managers are Diane Manojlovic and Virginia Davies.

OBITUARIES

GRANT, Donna L. September 14, 1939 − February 27, 2016

gJcJ SXZW[fHf SLfZMH]XY PMj\M_f

It is with great sorrow that the family of Edith Heloise Pendle announce that Edith passed away at Peace Arch Hospital on February 8, 2016 with her loving family by her side. Edith was predeceased by her mother Nellie in 1930; her beloved brother Clifford Loyal who was killed in action in Italy in 1944 during World War II; her father Harrison Homer in 1948; her 9 siblings (various years) and son-in-law Ben in 2014. Edith was born in Edmonton, Alberta and was raised by her father and her siblings. She leaves to mourn her passing: daughters Shirley and Colleen, granddaughters Tammy (Les); Kari (Graham) and great granddaughter Riley.

Bert was born February 26, 1920 in Calgary, Alberta and Irene was born in High River, Alberta on January 13, 1919. After working at C.P.A. for many years, Bert started working for Snap On Tools, where he remained employed for 25 years until he retired. Irene was a Registered Nurse and worked in hospitals in New Westminster and Vancouver. They were also honoured veterans of World War II and served their country well. Bert spent many hours volunteering his time to many charities, social events and functions. He also delivered meals on wheels to the elderly and disabled citizens of Ladner. Bert and Irene are survived by their two sons John Duncan Poile and wife Elaine of Grand Forks, B.C. and Allen Stuart Poile and wife Angela of Calgary, Alberta as well as many nieces and nephews. They will be sadly missed and always remembered by family and friends. Service May 21, 2016 at 1pm-3pm at Seafarer Marina, 4803 - 48th Avenue, Ladner, BC.

In 1947 she met and married Fred Pendle in Alberta. They raised their two girls there until 1962 when they moved to Vancouver, living in Point Grey on the waterfront for many happy years. Mom loved to entertain family and friends. We had many wonderful visits and dinners at our home with many guests from all over. Mom worked at the B.C. Cancer Clinic from 1966 - 1990 making many friends amongst co-workers and patients. Upon her retirement in 1991 Mom moved to Ladner, B.C. living next door to Shirley and Ben. She enjoyed her new home and loved traveling to Alberta and the U.S.A. visiting family and friends. Above all Mom loved her family. She loved people and animals, especially her adored puppy dogs. There are so many people to thank for their friendship and their help with Mom: Dr. Ronald Davidson, M.D.; Dr. Richard James, M.D.; Dr. E. Rouhana, M.D.; Dr. Turner; Dr. Wu and to all the Doctors, Nurses and Re-hab staff at Peace Arch Hospital for their wonderful care; Dr. Clark, M.D. Royal Columbian Hospital; all the staff at Harvest Drive Pharmacy for all their kindness and care over the years; Boundary Bay Health Unit Home Care Nurses for excellent care; Delta Funeral Home - Doug, Jean and Maggie for their care and compassion and guidance to the family during this very sad time; Tait and Louise Given; Maria DaSilva Tomas for excellent care; Mr. David Papau at CIBC Wood Gundy; Gloria Lawes; Betty O’Donnel; Kass at LifeLabs and the many relatives and friends who faithfully kept in touch. Our ROSEBUD - Loved forever; Remembered forever; Missed forever A private memorial service will be held for Mom at a later date. Don’t cry, I’m only sleeping with the angels, we’ll meet again some day.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
