A buck seems fair. That’s what Delta Mayor Lois Jackson is pitching as a nominal $1 toll for all major crossings in the region to help ease congestion. Saying she believes regional tolling is an idea worthy of exploring though public discourse, Delta’s idea, which will go to the regional district and province, stems from heavy congestion at the George Massey Tunnel and, in particular, the Alex Fraser Bridge. The latest available numbers from 2011 show 89,000 vehicles use the tunnel daily, while the Alex Fraser experiences the second most volume of any bridge in Metro Vancouver at 117,000 vehicles. Jackson says the congestion is due to many motorists wanting to avoid tolled and under utilized crossings such as the new Port Mann Bridge. “On the other side of Delta, the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is attempting to provide relief by replacing an aging tunnel that has reached vehicular capacity and is nearing the end

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson is pitching a $1 toll for all major crossings in the region. of its useful life,” states a news release from Delta. “The new bridge would provide much needed transit, cycling, and pedestrian improvements, and would improve air quality on either side of the crossing. With the Province intending to fund the replacement bridge through user tolls and both Surrey and New Westminster mayors supporting the tolling of a Patullo Bridge replacement, traffic will likely divert to other free routes

that are already experiencing extraordinary congestion like the Alex Fraser Bridge. With this in mind, the Province is committed to receiving feedback to review its current tolling policy.” When the province released its project definition report on the new bridge to replace the tunnel, Transportation Minister Todd Stone confirmed it will be tolled but the price has not been set. He confirmed the tolls will be in the same range as

those on the Port Mann Bridge, but the final price will depend on a number of factors, including funding from the federal government and Port Metro Vancouver, as well as the final construction contracts. Eyeing a lower rate for Delta residents who will depend on the crossing to get into Richmond and Vancouver, Delta is pitching the idea of spreading out the cost among all the current crossings and eliminating the province’s

current policy of free alternatives. “Transportation has always dominated the conversation in Delta. With the results of the 2015 Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Plebiscite, it is apparent now more than ever that we need to explore different avenues to tackle congestion and fund transportation and infrastructure projects,” the press release states. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington recently noted that without a regional tolling system, Delta commuters using the new bridge could expect to pay over $1,500 more each year in tolls. An improved regional tolling system could decrease costs for residents south of the Fraser and reduce congestion on all crossings. “The Lower Mainland is a network of bridges,” she said. “We need a tolling system that distributes infrastructure costs fairly and we need the Minister’s involvement to make that happen.” The B.C. Trucking Association has also recently called for tolls on all major water crossings in Metro Vancouver while a permanent pricing scheme is worked out.

Mayor talks transportation at chamber meeting DAVE WILLIS

Transportation was one of the topics Mayor Lois Jackson touched on during her talk ahead of the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s annual general meeting Wednesday. “We hear time and time again that transportation is the number one issue in Delta. For our residents, for our businesses and for our employees,” she told the audience at the Delta Town & Country Inn. She said while Delta is always going to have an inordinate amount of traffic because of its employment generators, industrial land, its proximity to Deltaport and the major highways and bridges

in our municipality that “doesn’t mean we should be content with major delays and congestion on our roads.” The long-time Delta mayor said the new 10-lane bridge that will replace the George Massey Tunnel will “erase one of the biggest traffic bottlenecks in the province.” Construction on the new crossing is expected to begin in 2017 and be completed by 2022. Jackson told the audience that their employees will benefit greatly, not just in transportation time saved but also in their safety as the existing tunnel has an “astronomical collision rate.” While the new bridge is clearly necessary, she said,

Mayor Lois Jackson gave a talk at a Delta Chamber of Commerce meeting Wednesday. Delta needs to keep working with the province on proper connections and interchanges, as well as to keep lobbying for fair tolling. She said as recently as March 1 she and others travelled to Victoria to talk to Transportation Minister Todd Stone to discuss the new bridge, Annacis

Island traffic congestion and other key issues. Jackson also mentioned a traffic issue that she said Delta identified years ago: the Highway 17 intersections in the Tilbury industrial area and around Highway 91. “During that planning stage for the South Fraser

Perimeter Road, Delta foresaw the congestion and the delays that we’re actually experiencing today,” she said, noting the municipality advocated for interchanges instead of intersections. “However, we have been told that relief is on the way. Hopefully in the very near future this provincial government issue is coming to the fore and they are working very hard on a solution for us.” Jackson also touched on municipal debt during her talk. Since 2002 Delta has incurred no new debt by utilizing a pay as you go funding strategy, she explained, adding that the municipality will be completely eliminating its general debt by 2018.

Uniqueness a big draw

Tsaw. Mills manager says shoppers will come from far and wide SANDOR GYARMATI

Its uniqueness will draw shoppers from far and wide. Tsawwassen Mills general manager Mark Fenwick had that to say about his new mall during a presentation at the South Delta Probus Club on Wednesday. Fenwick talked about what to expect from the Ivanhoé Cambridge shopping centre project, which is based on the company’s huge CrossIron Mills mall outside of Calgary and Vaughan Mills in the Greater Toronto area. “It’s a first and very unique to the market. It’s going to draw shoppers from the entire region, and when I say region, it’s the whole of Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Island, northern Washington State, the Interior of B.C.,” he said. “This is a shopping centre that will have people drive upwards of two-and-a-half hours to come and visit.” Located at the Tsawwassen First Nation, just off Highway 17A and 52nd Street, the new mall is slated to open

Noting 18 to 20 per cent of the customers will come from outside the trade area, including tourists and shoppers from other parts of the province, Fenwick explained the layout of the $600 million Mills mall with its different themed areas is something different than what other regional malls offer. For the Mills, the only two confirmed tenants, so far, are a Bass Pro Shops and a Saks OFF 5TH store. The Bass Pro Shops was said to be opening this May, in advance of the rest

design/build contractor Maple Reinders. It’s designed to meet all the TFN’s servicing needs for full build-out. The project at the northeast corner of the TFN’s industrial lands, along 27B Avenue, had to be built after the Corporation of Delta insisted it didn’t have the pipe capacity to service TFN growth, conveying it had no intention of entering into even

Having 200 stores including 16 anchors, Tsawwassen Mills will be mostly a fashion oriented centre with a mix of outlet and other retailers, but it will also have a wide range of other products and services to enhance the shopping experience. Also having a 1,100-seat food court, the 1.2-million-square-foot indoor mall will sit next door to Tsawwassen Commons, a 550,000-square-foot outdoor shopping centre with approximately 100 tenants, including Walmart, Canadian Tire and Rona. of the mall. However, that’s now changed as Fenwick told the Probus audience it may open two or three weeks in advance. As to why other tenants haven’t been announced yet, he noted they’ll only be announced as part of a competitive and strategic process. Meanwhile, according to Ivanhoé Cambridge, construction is proceeding on schedule for the fall opening. Roof and skylight installations are now complete, along with paving of the 6,000-stall parking lot. Crews have also installed parking lot lighting. The custom exterior for anchor tenant Bass Pro Shops is also nearly complete and interior tenant improvements will soon begin throughout the mall. Power and water are also now functional within the entire centre. Work in the next few months includes completing the mall’s exterior finishes as well as interior finishes and entranceways. Roadwork is also continuing with the majority of the remaining work to take place west of the 48th Street intersection.

Back in the 1990’s, Delta refused to service the TFN’s new Tsatsu Shores condominium development, prompting the First Nation at the time to construct its own wastewater treatment facility to service the complex. failed to win tax funding support in a plebiscite last year, should take precedence, and Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has predicted the new bridge would mean major congestion in the city. “It’s like I’m talking to the wind and I think there’s a lot more politics at play here than we would like to admit,” Jackson said last month. “Even though they knew Premier (Christy) Clark had announced the bridge over two years ago, they still refuse to accept the fact that it’s going ahead for all the right reasons.” As well this week, a Metro committee voted to ask the board to request that the project be put through a federal environmental assessment. part of the technical working group for the environmental assessment review and Metro staff have already provided written comments on the project definition report, which was released in December. There will be another public comment period once the environmental assessment application is submitted. “It’s really unfortunate that the mayors didn’t support our position on the need for replacement of the tunnel,” Jackson said. Several Lower Mainland mayors have spoken out against the project. Last December, when the province announced more details on the bridge, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, a long-time critic of the plan, expressed reservations about the priority to build it. Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner suggested the regional mayors’ plan for transit, which

Civic politicians in Delta told their Metro Vancouver colleagues last week there’s no need to delay plans to replace the George Massey Tunnel. Delta council approved sending a staff report to the province, as well as all Metro Vancouver directors, countering the assertion that the regional district needs more time to assess the possible impacts of a new bridge. The Metro Vancouver board recently approved a staff report requesting an additional two months to review the $3.5-billion provincial project. “I was very disappointed that the mayors, despite the information that I shared, wanted it delayed for two months,” Mayor Lois Jackson said last week. On more than one occasion, Jackson has expressed frustration over other mayors in the region wanting to halt the project, which has no ties to TransLink or requires money from Metro Vancouver. The Delta report states that Ministry of Transportation staff have met with Metro Vancouver more than 20 times over the past three years, regional district staff are

Delta is creating a civic position aimed at assisting seniors. Delta council has approved using currently vacant auxiliary hours in the parks, recreation and culture department’s budget to create a parttime position to interact directly with seniors looking for information and assistance. The employee is to help guide them toward social programs and support services that are available municipally, provincially and federally. Deltassist has already developed a Seniors Services Handbook that provides information on available counselling services, continuing education, funeral planning, home support, legal services, government and other services, while bc211 is a confidential, multilingual Metro Vancouver telephone and texting service that also provides free

informational and referral to a range of community, social and government services. However, civic staff noted that feedback received from a pair seniors’ expos held in Delta last fall, followed by a pair of “think tanks” hosted by Delta at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre and Kennedy Seniors’ Recreation Centre late last year, found a need to provide more concrete support for local seniors. From that came the recommendation for the new auxiliary position, which will work out of seniors’ recreation facilities. Delta CAO George Harvie noted the auxiliary position is aimed at helping steer seniors that have questions to the right places, but it will be different than a corporate social planner, another new municipal position. The social planner will do even more, including networking with agencies, Harvie said.

Arthur intersection closed for weekend Drivers trying to get between Ladner and Tsawwassen over the next several days should stick to the highway. The intersection of Arthur Drive and 34B Avenue will be closed to traffic starting today at 7 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m. as crews work to replace a culvert. Motorists are being advised to use Highway 17A as an alternate route. After March 21, traffic will be reduced to single lane alternating for seven to 10 days as work continues.

t’s time we started talking names. As much as “the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel” rolls off the tongue, it would be nice to find something a little less cumbersome to refer to the crossing that will undoubtedly consume countless rolls of newsprint before it sees its first vehicle in 2022. I realize choosing a permanent name for the span is premature in the extreme, and that I’m probably four or five years ahead of time, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to at least get the discussion going. Given it’s a provincial project, Victoria will select the name, although with a couple of elections still to be contested before the bridge is scheduled to open, which provincial government that will be is very much up in the air. Regardless of who is in power, the naming process will go one of two ways: it will either pay homage to a political figure or it will recognize the area the crossing serves. The tunnel bears the name of a former MLA, who was a crossing advocate long before he was a politician, while the Alex Fraser memorializes a late Social Credit cabinet minister and the Pattullo is named after a former premier. The Port Mann and Golden Ears reflect the geography of the area, as did the Deas Island Tunnel before it was renamed to reflect Massey’s tireless work to make it a reality. Some have referred to the new crossing, likely out of convenience, as the Massey Bridge, but given he died a half-century ago it doesn’t, with all due respect, really fit. The fact his family isn’t fond of the project adds to the unsuitability. Mind you, there aren’t many names that jump off the page regardless of which party gets to do the honour. Local possibilities are in short supply, which means if they go the political route it would likely be a provincial figure, someone such as former premier Gordon Campbell. If you’re scoffing at that, we could be saddled with the Glen Clark Bridge, although something tells me his name might be better attached to a very quick ferry. Should there not be a political figure deemed appropriate to honour, then Victoria would almost certainly turn to some kind of landmark for inspiration. Who knows, we might even go full circle and call it the Deas Island Bridge.

Prayer Breakfast lives on thanks to volunteer efforts

T

he more things change the more they remain the same, in this case for the better. For 41 years, February and the Town & Country Inn have played host to Delta’s Leadership Prayer Breakfast. Political dignitaries from three levels of government have regularly brought their message to Delta citizens. Numerous volunteers and Delta’s Chamber of Commerce have assisted in organizing this popular event. Generations of Delta residents have long enjoyed the social interaction with community leaders. Familiar names of Friesen, Morrisons, et al., original authors of this event, are fading from our perspective. There was a moment in this the 42nd year when there was little public information available. Seems there was a hiccup as Linda Frost had retired after 20 years of leadership in the volunteer committee responsible for the prayer breakfast. With Greg Muirhead still at the helm and Diane Hansen filling the void the 42nd Leadership Prayer Breakfast held at Tsawwassen Springs was a resounding success. Past attendees, sponsors and churches rallied to the cause along with community leaders making this year’s event the largest ever. Guest speaker Mark

Washington, CFL all star and Grey Cup winner now defensive coach with the B.C. Lions, was a hit with the audience as he “coached” them on the power of leadership and prayer. For the past 35 years or so, the Saip family has been a fixture in a leadership role at this event, from master of ceremonies, organizing, entertainment, etc. starting with Dale and as time moves on into the Saip second generation. Dale Saip has taken a leadership role in this community since 1987 when first elected to Delta’s school board. Raised in Richmond with two brothers one of whom became a Baptist minister, religion has always played a role in Dale’s life. Dale graduated from Matthew McNair South Richmond and is a UBC alumni. The enticement of politics has always been present with uncle Len Gustafson Saskatchewan MP

for 15 years and later appointed to the senate chamber by the Conservative party. With the exception of two terms, Dale has been re-elected to the Delta School Board serving as chair numerous times. Dale is a full-time executive with the Vancouver Giants hockey team yet finds time to sit on numerous volunteer boards and committees such as chair of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and the Delta Police Foundation to name but a few, and served as a seventerm Ladner Business Association president. As a father of five and now a “youngish” grandfather, Dale has long served Delta’s youth, as a former Delta Parks and Recreation commissioner. As well he has coached Delta Secondary and Rams Bantam football teams to provincial championships. Dale also coached boys and girls programs in South Delta minor hockey for many years. Dogged by past financial issues long since resolved satisfactorily, he remains a credible political option and is armed with a sterling reputation in community service and leadership. In 2012 Dale was awarded Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee medal for long standing community service. Delta is well served by Dale Saip and family. And a good night to all Saip family members

Decision to replace tunnel with a bridge not based in logic Editor: So, the bridge debate rages on. Local and provincial officials can say whatever they want but it’s pretty obvious this is about money, not convenience. I am no engineer, but replacing the Massey tunnel with a bridge is not logical. It doesn’t solve the problem, no matter how many lanes they add. The obvious solution is to reduce the volume of traffic, not widen the road. Alternative modes of transportation need to be provided. Clearly, extending the Richmond TransLink line to Delta

and beyond would dramatically reduce traffic volume. The only reason that is not being proposed is that a lot of people are making a lot of money to build the bridge instead. It’s the same reason the bloated ferry system continues to run instead of building a bridge to Vancouver Island. Shady politics and people filling their pockets with money, money, money. If we want to look at cities with strong transportation infrastructures, look no further than Toronto. Sure, the GTA has its

share of traffic problems, but commuters have the choice of driving (on an expansive freeway system), subway, GO train, streetcar, bus, etc. Can you imagine if Vancouver’s population was the size of Toronto’s? Yikes. Parking lot 24-7. I understand why people are upset about the bridge and I agree with them but the decision appears to have been made and trust me: This is being driven by a political agenda and it’s all about a lot of people making a lot of money. Thanks to Chaos Monkeys for benefit concert

Editor: On Friday, March 4, the Chaos Monkeys played to a packed house to raise money for Deltassist. As president of the Deltassist Board, I attended the event to support the band and thank them for helping us out. For a donation at the door, I was treated to four very talented teenagers who stood in front of a packed house with confidence and energy. I was incredibly impressed by how great they sounded, made only more fun by having other friends join them on stage for guest appearances. I had been asked to say a few words during the intermission, and having had a long day already, I decided I’d stay until I heard a song I didn’t recognize. They played songs from Pink, AC/DC, the Monkeys, Adele, songs I recognized

but couldn’t name the band, and my personal favourite, the Beatles. You don’t hear Dear Prudence live that often. There was no way I was leaving until the final encore ended. They said they were tired of practicing and wanted to headline a show, and they didn’t disappoint. They were polished and professional. They played every song they knew. And I knew all the songs too. The house was packed with people of all ages. Not only was it a great night, they raised over $300 for Deltassist. Thanks, Chaos Monkeys! On behalf of the Board, staff and clients of Deltassist. Meier has operated a Myrtle’s Famous Hot Dogs stand at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall since 2011, but told the Optimist he’s decided to close his business. “It’s been an honour to serve the community,” he said. future for

farmland With port banging the drum on need for more industrial land, Delta’s green space is in jeopardy Sandor Gyarmati sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

My opinion is if (Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO) Robin Silvester wants to develop all this land in South Delta for port use, the TFN was already given a huge piece for industrial, so why not use their two big pieces right now for port expansion, instead of using up good farmland?

– Councillor Ian Paton

Delta’s fertile farmland is among the best quality in the province.

I

t’s a quiet day at Ian Paton’s East Ladner hay farm. With the exception of airplanes overhead from the nearby airport’s flight schools, the farm at the end of 88th Street, started by his grandad John Paton and later operated by his dad, Agricultural Land Reserve advocate Ian Paton Sr., is an almost postcard-like setting. While his barn cats casually walk about and eagles perch on poles waiting for a meal, Paton is eager to get inside his barn and get talking about what’s on his mind. Since Delta is still considered a farming community, despite being nestled within a growing Lower Mainland, Paton’s farm is a scene similar to elsewhere in South Delta, but perhaps not for the long-term. A civic councillor who regularly provides a Delta Farmers’ Institute perspective at Delta council meetings, Paton opens up a 2014 Delta planning department map on a table to show the Optimist what’s been bothering him: large swaths of prime farmland in South Delta potentially being converted for industrial uses. It’s a hot-button issue that’s been much talked about in recent years, but Paton says the map is particularly troubling as it makes that possibility all too real, despite that land supposedly under the protection of the Agricultural Land Reserve. “I smell a rat that a lot of this farmland is going to be converted,” he says. Paton’s concerns are heightened as Port Metro Vancouver recently warned yet again that demand for Canadian trade is growing and container traffic through Canada’s Pacific gateway is expected to nearly double over the next 15 years. Trade-enabling industrial land will be required to meet that demand or the region will miss out on economic opportunities and the costs of goods may rise, the port warns. Emphasizing the importance of consultation with communities, the port has suggested the need for a mechanism whereby a swap of farmland near ports can be negotiated for potential farmland elsewhere. If it’s a question of priorities and values, Paton says, then things in Delta could be going the wrong way. With the potential for a second container terminal at Roberts Bank, Terminal 2 could open the floodgates to all kinds of new warehouses and

Then there’s hundreds of acres at Brunswick Point “My opinion is if (Port Metro Vancouver president in proximity to the port, which are currently farmed but have a future that’s as murky as ever. In 1969, the province sent 37 Delta farmers expropriation notices in what had been described as “a land grab” of about 2,000 acres for a proposed mile-wide industrial and service corridor along the Roberts Bank rail route. At the time, W.C. Mearns, B.C. Harbours Board chairman, said the deep sea port would likely require another 20,000 acres to meet future requirements. That industrial development never occurred and, by the late 1990s, many of the farmers that had lost their lands, but A second container terminal would dramatically increase the need were allowed to remain and for more trade-enabling industrial land. lease them from the province, were given an opportunity to buy them back. However, the

and CEO) Robin Silvester wants to develop all this land in South Delta for port use, the TFN was already given a huge piece for industrial, so why not use their two big pieces right now for port expansion, instead of using up good farmland? And as you know, up on River Road, Delta has a huge new industrial area we reclaimed. There’s all kinds of sites up there perfect for industrial warehousing.” Longtime farmland advocate and Richmond city councillor Harold Steves, who helped create the ALR when he was a New Democrat MLA in the early 1970s, says if the TFN grabbed control of Brunswick Point, it’s “game over” for farming. And if the optioned farmland was sold to the port, it would likely use the argument the land falls under federal jurisdiction, so it does not have to abide by municipal or provincial regulations. The port doesn’t own land in Delta, but does own the 230-acre Gilmore Farm in Richmond, where that city has been embroiled in a bitter war of words over its future. The port gave the farm a new “special study area” designation, but Silvester recently admitted development is an option. He also said Port Metro Vancouver president he didn’t and CEO Robin Silvester says a think the regional conversation is needed port is bound on industrial land. by the ALR because, as a federal body, “we have supremacy.” Saying the port doesn’t, and certainly shouldn’t, have such power, Steves says, “The big prize for Port Metro is Delta farmland that will fall like dominoes. The port wants another 2,500 acres. Ironically, scientists from the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture told us we need to add 230,000 acres (92,000 hectares) of irrigated farmland, largely in this region, but it’s ignored.” Roger Emsley with Against Port Expansion (APE) told the Optimist he’s concerned how the port sees itself as beyond ALR rules, saying the new federal government needs to live up to its mandate and focus on science and the environment. Noting the $3.5 billion bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel will add further pressures, Emsley says a multilevel government task force is needed to look at the farming and environmental issues, and that a moratorium on port development and ALR transfers is needed now. “Delta is a gateway, not a doormat,” he says. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, who caused a stir a few years ago when she brought attention to the private optioning deals, echoes those concerns, saying, “Yes, the port is not tied by the provincial designation. Too much power in the hands of a non-elected entity, which in my humble opinion must absolutely be dealt with by the federal government.” She says she’s disturbed by Premier Christy Clark’s apparent support for the port when it comes to Richmond’s Gilmore Farm, noting those who

questioned it were accused of not supporting the economy or jobs. An industrial land reserve must not come at the expense of agricultural land, says the independent MLA. Citing food security concerns, the Delta/Richmond chapter of the Council of Canadians has also complained about the port’s “gross insensitivity to farmland and natural world values.” As far as land being added to the ALR elsewhere in the province to make up for acreage being pulled out of Delta and Richmond, James Vercammen, a professor of Food and Resource Economics at UBC, says it’s his understanding that all “good” farmland in B.C is already in the ALR, so any non-ALR land that is brought in would be much more marginal relative to the land that is developed. “Many of the other parts of the province are best suited to grains (Peace River) and cattle. There is limited potential for these regions to be a major supplier of consumer-oriented local food such as fruits and vegetables,” Vercammen says. On the flip side, some like the Fraser Institute question the need for having the ALR at all. In a 2009 report, the Fraser Institute concluded, “This regime is made all the worse by its false promises about sustaining agriculture and improving nutrition and food safety, as well as its failure to deliver most of the other benefits offered as justification for the ALR by its architects. The Agricultural Land Reserve has not encouraged family farming. It has not nurtured a

new generation of farm operators. Nor has it shielded the farm sector from changes in agriculture experienced across Canada and around the world.” Silvester and the port haven’t gone so far as to make such statements, although in 2012 he caused a stir by suggesting at a Metro Vancouver board meeting the ALR was emotionally but not economically important to the region. Calling for the creation of an industrial land bank, the port, which has gone on a land buying spree over the past few years, and Silvester continue to warn how a shortage will pose a major hit to Canadian trade and the economy. Last December, the port released the findings of a study it commissioned that found the current supply of trade-enabling industrial land in the Lower Mainland will likely be exhausted within the next 10 years. Noting 23 per cent of jobs in Metro Vancouver happen on industrial land, Silvester told the Optimist a conversation is needed now with everyone at the table, since it’s not just a port issue or a municipal issue, but a regional issue. “What we need are two next steps that are kind of related: protection of the industrial land that’s left. We’ve got to stop this process of loss of industrial land… The second step is we’ve got to have a forum to have this regional conversation. It’s not a conversation about one farm in Richmond. It’s not a conversation about a set of options in Delta. It’s bigger than that.”

Members of the public continue to voice concerns over losing farmland to port development.

on to our faith, or just hanging on, it is too soon to quit. Louis L’Amour said, “There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning.” King David wrote a song about his love for and dependence on God (Psalm 27). In it, he references enemies fighting him, family forsaking him, armies besieging him, false witnesses lying about him, and feeling rejected by God — all stuff that could make you want to quit. But he ends his song with this (v.14): “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Don’t quit. You may only be three feet from gold. Mike Mawhorter mike@ladnerbaptist.ca

Napoleon Hill, in his famous book Think and Grow Rich, tells of a miner who struck gold during the gold rush. The first load of ore indicated one of the richest mines in the area, but then the vein of gold disappeared. He kept drilling, but with no success. Finally, discouraged, he sold the machinery to a junk dealer for a few hundred dollars and caught the train back east. The junk dealer, thinking there was still hope, engaged a mining engineer who understood fault lines. Sure enough, the vein of gold picked up again just three feet from where the miner quit digging, earning millions. There are times that all of us feel like quitting.

Sustaining Healthy Habits Having owned Open Space Yoga for 11 Years I consider myself a pretty good judge when it comes to watching people make, create, succeed and sometimes fail on sustaining healthy habits for themselves. January and September are really busy for the health, wellness and fitness industries. People start those times of year full of gusto, like its pressing a ‘re-set button’ for themselves but somewhere along the line that the intention quite often gets lost. Come March we notice that habits slip off substantially! People start the year with huge and good intentions of putting themselves first and making ‘Me time’… but then other life things get in the way and break the healthy habits: kids’ schedules, work commitments etc. and the habits gets broken. The people we see that have the most balanced lives are the ones that take an hour or so for themselves a few times a week. They seem able to then be more present for their loved ones. I can’t tell you how many customers say ‘My partner tells me when I go to yoga I am much nicer to be around’. For myself I have to create my own morning healthy habits that I can’t break. I make sure I go the gym early in the morning before work almost every day and then to the yoga studio for a short practice. If I don’t go first thing in the morning, not only does my work day and life get in the way but the habit can be easily broken. I also commit to registering into dance classes twice a week and that registration commitment keeps me attending.

also helped him lose well over 100lbs and reclaim his health and life. Whatever your commitment to your health and wellness whether it’s walking, running, going to the gym or coming to your favourite local Ladner Yoga studio I encourage you to keep making yourself your habit and keep striving to find what works for you. So next time we start operating according to a habit, whether good or bad, let’s pause and look at the state of being. Do we like the state of being our habits are based on? Do we want to remain in that state? If we ask ourselves these questions, whether we keep our old habits or create new ones. That’s the kind of self knowledge that yoga is all about. Open Space Yoga offers all levels of classes from Beginners to Intermediate. New Customers can always try out 1 Month of Unlimited Classes for only $49 or sign-up for the 8 Week Beginner Course starting in April. Let Us Get Real. The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun or bulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There is no magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uv light. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? - just asking!

Is this “No U.V. light message the same as : Don’t use salt! To quickly be replaced by “oh a little salt is o.k.” or don’t use butter to be replaced later by “oh a little butter is good for you” or red wine is bad to soon be replaced by “a little red wine is good for our digestion.” Are we being lead by the nose? - still just asking! Look at these outdoor Burners, they probably lost the fun of their next 3 days of vacation they did not sleep easy for a few nights.

he Artists in the Village Society is aiming to start a new continuing community art event next month. Village Artists En Plein Air would see a group of artists get together at different locations within Ladner Village and other areas of Delta on a regular basis and paint outside. Artists in the Village president/founder Mary Ann Burrows says one of the society’s visions was that the area could be a destination place that art-

ists could come and paint. “We’re always looking for opportunities,” she says. The idea is for the first gathering to take place around the middle of next month. Artists of all levels are asked to bring their own supplies to the meetup area. People are also welcome to come out and watch. Burrows says artists who might just be starting up “can come create in an environment that’s nonjudgmental and fun.” The plan is to hold the free meet-ups on a weekend morning on a fairly consistent basis as the weather warms up.

Burrows says she’s learned a lot from en plein air and that it’s her favourite type of painting.

She describes en plein air as artists, who are outside, basically painting what they see in whatever

style they choose. She says it’s quick and loose and that artists who paint in studios will often try en plein air to bring some of that looseness back into their paintings in the studio, so it’s not so tight and not so overanalyzed.

“It allows you to be in the moment,” she says. Meet-up dates and locations will be posted on the society’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ villageartistsenpleinair. Contact Burrows at info@ artistsinthevillage.com for more information or to register. *** Rick Pelletier will be speaking at the group’s next artist talk meeting, set for March 21 at 7 p.m. at Ladner United Church. He plans on demonstrating on how to photograph paintings and then give a historical perspective on documentary landscape.

Adventuring through the Marquesas CHRIS MCBEATH

B

Optimist contributor

efore I was able to catch my breath, Tino’s strong tattooed arms scooped me up and, lifting me high above the crashing waves in which he stood, he delivered me over the side of the boat to shore like an irreverent feather. After nine-days of travelling together, we had all come to appreciate Tino’s dexterity and seamanship. Besides handling human cargo with a gentleness that belied his size, his other duties were as a member of the 53-person crew aboard the Aranui III, the only purpose-built passenger freighter of its kind in French Polynesia. The Marquesas Islands Because of their relative isolation this volcanicinspired archipelago still echoes ‘old Polynesia.’ With a population of about 8,000, the Marquesas have not yet succumbed to resort developments that have reconfigured Moorea and Bora Bora into paradise holiday

camps. In fact, many of the smaller islands are virtually untouched since early European discovery and what tourism industry there is centres largely around the Aranui’s arrival. Other cruise ships may call at some of the islands, but the Aranui is the only passenger-oriented ship making regular trips — 16 a year — to all the populated islands. And since many of the crew are descendants of those Polynesians who first settled here, the ship’s arrival feels like a home-coming in which passengers are welcome participants. About the Aranui Aranui is a Polynesian word for “Great Highway” and true to its calling the sturdy Romanian-built vessel is the lifeline to these remote communities, carrying to them everything from ever popular SUVs, Hinanos (Polynesian beer) and livestock to kerosene containers, building materials and chocolate. When the Aranui arrives, the ship’s purser sets up a grocerteria out of crated containers, and islanders line up

The first Aranui was an old PT-boat that promoted copra (dried coconut meat) just after the Second World War. The replacement vessel added a passenger contingent and in 2003 the larger more passenger-friendly Aranui III took its place. Although today’s ship still carries copra and barrels of noni, a cheesy-smelling fruit that is the islands’

chief export, the Aranui III caters to Polynesia’s growing tourism market with almost as much space for its 200 passengers as for its freight. The Cruising Experience The Aranui cruising experience should be judged not by its amenities but for its experience. Accommodations aren’t plush but perfectly adequate — a mix of suites and cabins as well dormitory style rooms with bunk beds. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, a loungelibrary as well as a small bar and an even tinier

gym. Meals are taken family style in a bright and airy dining room; it is where you really come to appreciate the gracious hospitality of the crew — the waiters are excellent, as well as the international scope of passengers. Expect an over abundance of French (this is still a French outpost) alongside a fair number of Americans plus a sprinkling of Germans, Swiss, Dutch, Australians, among others. The Aranui Band offer impromptu music-underthe-stars whenever two or three crew members have downtime, and whenever passengers can be cajoled into a talent show. There are also guest lecturers and other evening activities such as ‘different ways to tie a pareu (sarong).’ Not exactly scintillating but after a full day of exploring the islands, early nights quickly become part of the itinerary. Ship to Shore Aranui passengers have become a tourism essential and certainly, the ship’s all-inclusive itineraries let you take in as much (or as little) of

the local culture as you like. Nearly every island has its specialty; some are better for hikes and historical sites while others offer black pearls, Tiki carvings and shell jewellery. At almost every port local artisans will set up shop under the shade of a palm frond while the community stages a cultural presentation whether basket weaving, or dancing troupes of slender young women with swaying grass skirts and warrior men in leaf skirts, ferociously thumping their feet on the ground. If you’ve a jaded eye, you might feel that some of their efforts to present ‘authentic Polynesia’ are overly staged. But the Aranui experience is certainly not. It offers one of the few remaining ways to really touch ‘old Polynesia’ — its customs, its grace and its languishing humidity. And The Marquesas are still an exotic reality about as far removed from the rest of the world as you can get. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate.

Fitness for your skin Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

I have found the perfect fitness solution for your skin. One that will tighten and tone your face just as well as any squat or lunge will tighten and tone your glutes. It is one of the best procedures to treat acne scars, age spots, sun damage, crow’s feet, droopy eyelids, sagging skin, scars and wrinkles. It will literally turn back the hands of time and it is available in Tsawwassen. In my quest to find the best anti-aging products I have done many things. Retinol, IPL laser, levulan and Blu-U treatments, Obagi blue peel. I have also tried a number of different skin care lines (my current favourites are the Zo Skincare line and SkinMedica), and I apply a broad-spectrum SPF on my face religiously every single day (get Elta, it is the best one I have found for the face).

You could say that I am somewhat addicted to skin care products. I am always on the hunt for what will give me the best results, and science has not let me down. Just recently Dr. Martin Ray of View Laser Skin Rejuvenation clinic introduced me to fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing. While the carbon dioxide laser (CO2 laser) itself isn’t new, it was invented in 1964, it is considered one of the highest-powered and most efficient lasers currently available on the market. For my skin care needs I have found it to be the best weapon against sagging skin (especially around the eyes and jowls), wrinkles, sun damage, pore size and scarring. CO2 laser’s effects are similar to those of chemical peels and dermabrasion, except that the laser removes skin layers by vaporization rather than with chemicals or a sanding device. Our facial tissue absorbs the frequency of light from the CO2 laser, allowing it to enter the skin. These tiny shafts of light then penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and the skin then repairs those tiny shafts by pushing out old sun damaged skin and replacing it with new skin. The body simply does what it is meant to do — heal itself.

up to 50% OFF

During this healing process more collagen is formed, making the skin firmer than it once was and as mentioned sun damage and scarring flake away while pore size diminishes. If you ever have had IPL laser done, think of it as that but on steroids. Big time steroids. The CO2 laser can be used to treat the entire face, the neck and chest, the eyes, or specific areas. Apparently the eyes respond really well, especially if you have mild sagging. I ain’t gonna lie, though. There is some pain and some down time. Not everyone is going to be a good candidate for the CO2 laser, either. I would highly recommend that you book a consultation with Dr. Ray and his staff. He will review your whole history, find out what your goals are with your skin and point you in the right direction. But, if you are an all-ornothing kinda person (like I am), can take a week off to recuperate and want to see real change with your skin I say try the CO2. Decisions loom for Ice Hawks

Unclear whether GM and coach will return after team falls in conference finals MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

After an improbable playoff run that brought them within two games of the Pacific Junior Hockey League finals, the Delta Ice Hawks will address their future over the next couple of weeks. The Ice Hawks’ season ended Tuesday night with a 4-1 loss to the Grandview Steelers in game six of the Tom Shaw Conference finals. A month earlier, Delta looked to be a non-factor in the playoffs, matched up against regular season champion North Vancouver in the opening round. However, the Hawks thrived under new coach Darren Naylor — taking out the defending champions in six games, then hanging tough with a veteran Steelers team. “We just couldn’t find anything that fit us and then Naylor came in and introduced a real nice defensive style of play that everyone adapted to,” said goaltender Jacob Latrace, who was outstanding in the playoffs with a pair of shutouts. “I definitely noticed it right away. The first game was against Richmond and there were a lot less shots than usual.” Naylor’s arrival was one of several off-ice changes over the course of the season that includ-

Ice Hawks goalie Jacob Latrace enjoyed an outstanding playoff in helping his team come within two wins of reaching the PJHL finals.

After taking over the head coaching reigns with one game left in the regular season and guiding the Delta Ice Hawks deep into the second round of the playoffs, Darren Naylor is unsure if he will return. ed new ownership, the return of general manager Peter Zerbinos and three different head coaches. When Wes Mussio purchased the club, he brought back Zerbinos to oversee the hockey operations, while Naylor was a good friend who also had a scouting role with the B.C. Hockey League’s Surrey Eagles at the time. Naylor says he will remain involved with Ice Hawks but isn’t certain it will be as head coach. “There are things that will be going on and whether I will be coaching this team or not, I don’t know,” said Naylor. “I will be involved in the operations but not sure in what capacity. I can say we will be moving forward and getting our spring (prospects) camp going and then we will see what happens. “There are a lot of different things that will play into it but the team will be fine next year.” Zerbinos, who is well-liked by everyone involved with the

team, says he will take some time to think about his future before committing to next season. “I came on to help (the new) ownership out and I think it all worked out,” he said. “This is a very tiring thing at this time of year and I always like to take a couple of weeks off (before making a decision). I will talk to Darren and ownership after that and see what goes from there.” A 5-3 game four win at home last Saturday turned the series with Grandview into a best-ofthree but the Hawks would get no closer. The Steelers produced a 5-2 game five victory at the Burnaby Winter Club 24 hours later then dominated much of game six. Delta failed to generate a whole lot of offence the entire series against a stingy veteran team that received terrific goaltending from Cole MacInnes. Naylor even dressed three affiliate forwards Tuesday — Nick Wilson, Isaac

Embree and Jonathan Stein — in an attempt to ignite the attack. Stein, with a pair, and Embree did score Delta’s final three goals of the series but it wasn’t nearly enough. The Steelers also enjoyed far more power play time, including a seven minute advantage in the third period. “They were a very disciplined team and that was the lesson we learned this series,” added Naylor. “Our youth showed but when you look at any level of hockey not many teams win (everything) right off the bat. They have to feel like they do right now. Come next year, the won’t let the undisciplined play take over because they don’t want to feel like that again. “I look back at the first game of the series (3-2 loss) when we had a 2-0 lead after two periods. The momentum switched in the third and I don’t think we ever got it back.”

HINDE, Audrey Lillian

October 12, 1922 March 14, 2016 Our dear Mum, Gran, great-Gran and greatgreat-Gran passed away peacefully at Delta Hospital. She was predeceased by her loving husband Bill, who passed away on December 29, 2015. They shared 74 wonderful, happy years with their cherished family. She leaves her daughter Penny Thorbeck, Marty (deceased), son Bill (Janis), grandchildren Scott, Jenny (Brian), Warren (Carly), Cindy (Connie), great-grandchildren Kristy (Rayner), Candice (Ryan), Katey (Soonbum), Matthew, Michael, Madison, McKenzie, as well as two great-great-grandsons, Levi and Fischer. Audrey married Bill on August 2, 1941 while he was in the RCAF. They settled in their first home in Richmond B.C. after the war. The main priority in her life was the commitment to her family. Her family always came first. She provided many hours of happiness to all that would gather in their warm and welcoming home. Many lessons were taught to carry on her traditions of her exceptional cooking abilities. Along with her devotion to her family, was her passion for gardening, hunting and fishing with her dear Bill. She lived a very long and happy life and will sorely be missed by her family and friends. We love you Mum, in our hearts forever. Our thanks to Dr. James for his sincere care as well as the wonderful staff at Delta Hospital and Augustine House. Family Service to follow. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Josephine on March 15, 2016 at the age of 94. Mum was born and raised in Ladner, B.C. and spent her life there raising her family. Josephine was predeceased by her husband Aldwin and her oldest daughter Gwennie. She is lovingly remembered by her children; Evie (Bob) Svendsen, Allan (Marguerite), Maureen (Rob) Davidson, Steve (Nancy), son-inlaw Doug Hennessy and her 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Josephine is also survived by her sister Lucille Wilson with whom she shared a very special bond. Her many nieces and nephews will miss their “Auntie Jo”. Our family has lost a feisty and kind little lady who will be missed by many. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Westshore Laylum for taking exceptional care of our Mum and to Dr. Rogerson. A service will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

Leanne and Carson Ruecker are excited to announce the birth of their beautiful baby daughter
