Spring has sprung and that means it’s time for the Corporation of Delta’s annual Spring Clean-Up. The program, which waives normal garbage volume limits to allow residents to drag almost whatever they want to the curb, comes to South Delta next week. Collection will take place on regular garbage days: Monday, April 4 in Tsawwassen and Tuesday, April 5 in Ladner. There are, however, a few rules: • Only residents that receive Delta’s weekly garbage collection service are eligible to participate. • Material cannot be placed at curb any sooner than the weekend prior to the scheduled collection day. • The amount of accepted material cannot exceed a pickup truck load. • Items must be able to be handled by two people; oversized items are not accepted. • All items must be bagged or bundled — loose material will not be picked up. There are also a number of items that are not accepted as part of Spring Clean-Up, including mattresses, tires, wood, construction materials, electronics and small appliances, paint and hazardous liquids, and more. For more information and a full list of what is accepted, visit www.delta.ca/services/ garbage-recycling/springclean-up.

Next week’s Tsawwassen First Nation election is turning out to be an intriguing race. Bryce Williams, a young artist wrapping up his first term as chief, faces two challengers for re-election in Andrew Bak, a former member of the legislature and supporter of former chief Kim Baird, and Ken Baird, a current member of the elected legislature as well as Kim Baird’s brother. Williams unseated Kim Baird in 2012, and again in a subsequent election the following spring, denying her a seventh term. Bak, a cousin of the former chief and Ken Baird, told the Optimist he had been nominated to run as chief in the last election but didn’t want to run against Kim Baird, especially since they held similar viewpoints. He said there was a sense of disappointment from some after she lost. “I’m somebody who has a bit of a business

TFN voices support for tunnel replacement project
The Tsawwassen First Nation has come out in support of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. “Tsawwassen First Nation is very supportive of the plan to replace the George Massey Tunnel,” Chief Bryce Williams said in a statement Wednesday. “Tsawwassen First
Nation is building a sustainable and vibrant economic future, one that is integrated with the rest of the region. Travel times to shop, to work or to live on Tsawwassen lands depend largely on replacing the aging tunnel with a bridge designed to handle current and future growth in our corner of the Lower
Mainland.” Also on Wednesday the province released a report summarizing the feedback it received during Phase 3 of public consultation on the bridge. According to a government news release, there was strong public support for capacity improvements, and the transit,
cycling and pedestrian measures in the project. The most recent phase of public consultation ran Dec. 16 until Jan. 28 and included online feedback as well as nine stakeholder meetings and open houses in Delta and Richmond. The government received more than 1,000 feedback forms and a total
of 750 people attended the two open houses. The stakeholder meetings included more than 100 people representing at least 60 organizations. Responses were received from residents from across the Lower Mainland with higher concentrations in Delta, Richmond and Vancouver.

Delta is planning to give new life to an underutilized and drab section of Ladner’s Memorial Park. Empty almost yearround, with the exception of being used as a beer garden during the annual May Days festival, the former lacrosse box at the northwest corner of the park, according to the parks, recreation and culture department, has become “a gathering place for undesirable activities.” Those activities prompted the municipality to lock the area up throughout much of the year, further compounding its underutilization. A proposal, which will go through community consultation, has come forward to resurface the space to provide a number of recreational activities, including a walking track,

Stuck in a chilly situation?
The Easter long weekend proved to be a busy one for Delta police. In addition to the usual reports of thefts, breaking up a couple of parties and dealing with some people who had a little too much liquid cheer, officers dealt with two more serious incidents, including a man attacked with a machete and a hit and run that left an elderly cyclist with head injuries. Early Easter Sunday morning, officers responded to a report of an assault with a weapon in the 8400block of Scott Road in North Delta. Upon arriving at the scene at around 2:30 a.m., officers found an injured 20-year-old Delta man. He had sustained several deep cuts to his head when he was hit with a machete

Two of the suspects were held in custody and appeared in court earlier this week. Police are recommending charges of assault with a weapon. The victim was treated in hospital and released later that same day. The cause of the altercation is not known. Later that same morning, officers responded to a report of a cyclist that had been hit by a car, which then fled the area. The driver, a 21-year-old Delta woman, provided subsequent breath samples that showed she was almost three times the legal limit. She was released on a promise to appear in court with a 90-day driving ban. Officers are still investigating the incident and A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow said once the investigation is complete the driver will also be facing criminal charges. The 71-year-old cyclist was transported to hospital with head injuries. He remains in hospital but his injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Internationally-acclaimed chef Kevin Cherkas is the only Canadian chef selected to present at the upcoming Madrid Fusión Manila.
Aside from a brief stint delivering papers for the Optimist, cooking has been the only job for chef Kevin Cherkas. As the first and only Canadian chef selected to present at the upcoming Madrid Fusión Manila, the Asian edition of the world’s top gastronomical festival, madridfusión, Cherkas has come a long way from his paper route days. Born and raised in Tsawwassen, the internationally-acclaimed chef was a restless, overexcited teenager when he had his first encounter with cooking. Stone ‘busts’ myths about new bridge
Transportation minister tells Richmond crowd that port isn’t driving $3.5-billion project ALAN CAMPBELL
Optimist contributor
Wednesday — if you were in B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone’s camp — was myth-busting day. In front of a mainly Richmond Chamber of Commerce member audience at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel — and with a dozen or so vociferous protestors outside — Stone attempted to, one by one, blow the so-called George Massey Tunnel replacement myths out of the water, so to speak. Although directing his comments toward the rumour-mongers, conspiracy theorists and those with apparently illinformed opinions, Stone did, at least, acknowledge that “British Columbians are engaged” in the consultation process for the proposed $3.5 billion, 10-lane, toll bridge over the south arm of the Fraser River. First, he attacked the notion the government’s project team hasn’t consulted properly, citing the 3,600 pages of information available, more than 100 meetings with stakeholders and three rounds of public consultation — results from the third of which were released this week. Second, those calling for a federal environmental
assessment of the project — as opposed to the soonto-take-place provincial version — were dismissed as being people that are never happy. He insisted the B.C. environmental review is “tough” and “world class.” Stone added that nothing has happened, to date, that would actually trigger a federal review of the project. Next up, the concept of a brand new tunnel, as opposed to a bridge, said Stone, “discounted thousands of hours of pain-staking effort by the project team” to weigh the tunnel option, even adding that a new bridge is less expensive than a tunnel. Finally, and likely the most prevalent of the “conspiracy theories,” Stone ripped into the assertion that, behind the scenes, it’s actually Port Metro Vancouver that’s driving the project in order to further industrialize the south arm of the Fraser. “I hate to break it to the conspiracy theorists out there… but this project is driven from a place of safety,” Stone told the business lunch crowd. “Is the port a stakeholder? Of course.” The current tunnel, said Stone, is not the biggest impediment to allowing larger vessels access the south arm, citing the Steveston Cut, Metro

B.C. Transportation Minister Todd Stone (left) addresses the Richmond Chamber of Commerce Wednesday. Vancouver pipelines and the inability for bigger container ships to turn around in the river. While some in the conference hall may have been convinced by the minister, several, including Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, weren’t buying in. “He still hasn’t answered several of (Richmond city council’s) questions and he keeps on giving different answers to the ones he does answer,” said a bemused Steves, seconds after Stone had finished talking. “We still want to know what the cost of expanding the tunnel was back in 2006, when his predecessor (Kevin Falcon) told us that tunnel expansion was the way forward. “They spent around $24 million at the time upgrading the tunnel and lo and behold, three years later (in 2009), they’ve decided
to build a bridge. How did that happen?” Steves said he wants to know why $3.5 billion is being spent on a bridge, rather than adding more lanes to the tunnel. He said city council
is still hoping to get an answer by April 1, otherwise the city will use the freedom of information system to get the original plan for the tunnel. Meanwhile, the provincial government released the results of its latest round of public consultation, claiming “general support” for the planned toll bridge. However, of 874 respondents in open houses and other sessions, 44 per cent gave only conditional support for tolling, with either a lower toll or tolls on all bridges. Another 13 per cent supported a standard toll at the new Massey Bridge, while 22 per cent opposed tolling entirely and 14 per cent wanted other funding

In answer to the concerns around tolling, Stone said the bridge isn’t scheduled to be completed until 2022 and said lots of discussion can take place between now and then. Of the 1,028 people who answered a question about the project scope, just five per cent said they had no concerns and 24 per cent said they were generally supportive. Another 31 per cent indicated conditional support, while 10 per cent were opposed.

e’ve been waiting for this weekend for quite some time. There’s no big event in the works, no date that calls for celebration, but this weekend is special for one particular reason — it’s the last one before next week’s Spring Clean-Up. Although we get a bang out of the size and contents of some of the piles that have a way of forming during Spring Clean-Up, most years we’re not big participants. Oh sure, we can usually find some odds and ends that have outlived their usefulness to drag to the curb, but it’s not like we circle the date on the calendar or anything. We have this year. This is the weekend we get to create a faux leather furniture gallery at the curb. I know what you’re thinking: “But, Ted, I thought faux leather would last forever.” Me too, but as it turns out that’s not the case. The loveseat was the first to expire, but it only made it as far as the garage, where it became a comforting spot for our previous dog who developed a fear of the dishwasher in her later years. Now that she’s gone, the loveseat can make it all the way to the curb, where it will find a sectional, which has been in storage at the side of the house since last fall. There’s a good chance they’ll be joined by a couch, which at the time of writing is still inside the house, but isn’t looking terribly healthy either. When a piece of furniture starts to shed more than the dog, even I can’t find anything in the arsenal to convince my wife it doesn’t need replacing. Given the couch won’t fit in either vehicle, this is shaping up to be a makeor-break weekend for it. If it survives, it’s likely here until next spring, but something tells me it, and a more than slightly used area rug, will end up completing a rather sad-looking living room set at the curb. I’m almost inclined to arrange it like a showroom in an effort to entice the pickers who will be out in force this weekend, but I suspect all I’ll attract is the drunk guy who needs to take a nap on his walk home from the pub. It’s probably just as effective to stack the pieces in an effort to make it easy on the garbage collectors. After all, upside down might just be their best side.
Concerns still plague bridge but it’s a positive for region

or the past 10 years or so I have had little need to get to Vancouver except to visit my mom or old friends every once in a while, so my opinion on congestion at the George Massey Tunnel or at Oak Street doesn’t really mean much. For those that make the trek daily, the tunnel replacement is probably a big deal for them. The provincial government is claiming that commuters will shave a full half-hour from the daily drive. I know that I would buy into that as justification for the $3.5 billion right out of the shoot. Do you recall a few weeks back there were several suggestions from within our community that FOI requests showed there was little information on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project? Turns out there was and is tons of information on the project. Some people couldn’t find it but it is clear the government could have done a better job of framing and telling the history of the story. Ministry officials have had more than 60 meetings with stakeholders in Delta and Richmond over the past several years. It is not like projects of this scope are decided over a beer and a burger somewhere. Behind closed doors, in the confines of the inner circle, cabinet will make decisions based on years and years of ministry planning. This past Wednesday the

government released its “Phase Three Consultation Summary” for the mega project. The report indicates public’s view of the project as generally positive, although like in any report regarding largescale infrastructure, many of the details are subject to interpretation. In the report, only about 1,000 people participated in surveys, yet the government is asserting that sampling is within the realm of an accurate gauge of public opinion. There are several areas of concern for the bridge project that participants weighed in on. The usual suspects included perceived bottlenecks at the Oak Street Bridge, conspiracy theories relating to Port Metro Vancouver hoodwinking us about mega freighters negotiating a newly dredged river to the Surrey docks, HOV, pedestrian and LRT lanes, loss of farmland and others. I am particularly concerned about potential loss of farmland but am happy to see that govern-
ment is planning for a net gain. We all know by now that issues around land use, especially farmland, require careful consideration and much compromise. The type of land within the ALR that could be swapped for a net gain remains to be seen. It seems as though the government is doing well to appease the farming community. The Richmond Farmers Institute supports the project. Perhaps the most interesting data in the report was in relation to how to pay for the thing. In terms of tolling, 13 per cent support tolling as proposed, 44 per cent indicated conditional support, 14 per cent recommended alternative sources of funding and 22 per cent opposed tolling altogether. Mayor Lois Jackson’s notion to implement a low toll for all bridges in Metro Vancouver seems to be resonating with the Ministry of Transportation and in a meeting with the Richmond Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, Minister Todd Stone seemed receptive to the idea of developing a regional tolling strategy and suggested that we have a couple of years to figure that out. To me, Delta’s support of the new crossing is not necessarily popular here, but it is pragmatic and positive for our region. Need for trade-enabling land
Editor: Re: Port has its eyes on Delta farmland despite dubious need to expand, letter to the editor, March 23 Roger Emsley’s letter contains incorrect assertions regarding the growth of Canadian container traffic on the West Coast as well as Port Metro Vancouver’s position regarding agricultural land. We live in a region where available land is scarce, whether it’s for residential, agricultural or industrial development. The reality of our situation is that we are going to have to work together to find creative ways that ensure our land supply meets the needs of our growing population, whether for housing, food or jobs. In the same way that agricultural land in B.C. is protected by the Agricultural Land
Commission, we have been advocating for similar protection for tradeenabling industrial land. Left unchecked, the pressures facing industrial land in the Lower Mainland will reduce our ability to accommodate trade that supports a growing population and provide highpaying jobs in the region, as well as further increase the pressure from industry on agricultural lands. Even with global volatility and slowing growth in China, Port Metro Vancouver handled a record 3.1 million TEUs in 2015, up five per cent over the prior year. Not only is this the fourth straight year of record container growth through Vancouver, it is also the fourth consecutive year of growth for Canadian container traffic. Despite the slowdown in 2009 due to the global recession, Canadian container traffic has been
above the 2008 level since 2012. Emsley’s suggestion that Canadian traffic last year was lower than in 2008 is factually incorrect. Our independent third party forecasts have indicated this growth will continue over the long term, and that even with planned improvements at Deltaport and Centerm, as well as expansion of Fairview Terminal in Prince Rupert, we will still require additional container capacity in the mid-2020s. Subject to environmental approval, the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project would meet that need, and deliver benefits to Canadians for generations to come. Land assembly plan raises some questions
Editor: Re: Neighbours sell en masse, March 25 Greed — that rampant, virulent, contagious social disease — so evident in Vancouver’s housing market has landed in Ladner. The notion of singlefamily homes involved
in a land assembly in an area designated singlefamily under the Official Community Plan raises some questions. Did the realtors have one of those approval seeking, secret meetings that Delta council has with developers before they
proceed with their plans? Did the unknown developer have such a meeting? Are official community plans no longer relevant? Are they a joke? Just what is going on here? Will this disease spread? Just checking. Claire Hurley
Remove tolls to test mayor’s idea of nominal fee for all major crossings
Editor: I challenge Christy Clark’s provincial government to remove the tolls from all crossings for a period of eight weeks. This will give them their study on how traffic flow will be affected by having all crossings tolled at $1 per use as suggested recently by Delta Mayor
Lois Jackson. If this proves to be successful, it will save billions of dollars on the proposed new Deas Island crossing. The money saved could be spent on the children of this province who are our future and in much need of provincial support as well as many other projects that can make
this province stronger. I am of the belief this bridge is being built solely for corporations, not for the public. If the bridge is built, the river will be dredged and larger ships and tankers will come, damaging the environment and spelling the demise of our salmon. Robert J. Mclean
Road improvements an embarrassment
Editor: Pure ugly. That’s the only way I can describe the new traffic control speed bumps, signage and concrete barriers just placed along 50B Street. What an embarrassment. I can’t believe the engineering department
and Delta council passed this one. Everywhere you look in Tsawwassen there is a general movement toward beautification and improvement. When you look at what transpired here, I think the result speaks for itself. I urge Delta to be hon-
est with itself and call this a very ill thought out project. Please, no more. And spend our tax dollars where it counts. I could name a few other municipalities that this road now looks like it’s a part of but I’ll refrain. Greg McDonald
Nothing more precious than children, so please don’t leave them unattended
Editor: With news of four-yearold Michael Dunahee’s disappearance 25 years ago being talked about recently, I write this letter. On more than one occasion in our family-friendly Ladner, I have seen little children left alone in their parents’ cars while their parents were in a store. I
have reported the license plate to the police. Today I watched as a child left a younger child in a car seat to find her parent who was in the bank. The car door was ajar on this younger child’s side and since I was worried for the child, I waited and was ready to phone the police when the adult
came out with the little girl. He didn’t notice the car door ajar so I told him. I told the man I was worried. Why is it so hard to take our little ones with us when we have to leave our cars? Are they not more precious and valuable than anything else? Allison Knox

Many new homes, particularly those in North Delta, include a secondary suite.
The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has warned rental vacancy rates will continue to plunge while rental prices will increase. However, concerns haven’t gone all away. One issue Delta council addressed last summer had to do with parking, as new regulations were introduced aimed at penalizing homeowners with suites that make their tenants park on the street. Jackson, a member of Delta council since the early 1970s, even before Anderson was forced out, is concerned by what is happening to neighbourhoods, saying the municipality is looking at the issue and trying to decide whether allowing basements and secondary suites should be an automatic. “Yes, we want to provide alternate housing and a lot of the times secondary suites are a place young people can live, however, what is happening is we are finding tremendous problems with all of our streets clogged with parked cars. Theoretically, you could have five cars for just one house. So originally you would have one house on one lot with maybe three cars for a family, but you tear down that house and put up two, and with basement suites, it means under that same formula you could now have 10 cars for those two houses. We are seeing that on all our streets and what I’m saying is maybe we should not allow suites by right,” said the six-term mayor. “We have a lot of cul-de-sacs in North Delta and that was done intentionally years ago to cloister the neighbour-
hood and allow a quieter neighbourhood where children can play. I think we have to do some analyzing here. Do we want to take that one big house with that one lot and cover it with the maximum size with a basement suite, illegal or not? “If we do that with all of North Delta, we are going to change that whole idea of the family neighbourhoods we know today. That’s troubling for me. I have said a 31-foot lot in North Delta is unacceptable, especially one with a basement suite.” According to Westcoast Environmental Law, secondary suites provide a variety of benefits to neighbourhoods and communities, are a significant source of affordable housing in serviced areas and do not change the character of neighbourhoods while diversifying the housing types available. The organization also notes that despite the benefits, secondary suites continue to generate considerable debate in most communities.

gal suites into the legal sphere by waiving a couple of their inspection fees and encouraging people to bring them into the legal category,” he said. “It’s pretty clear from our perspective that secondary suites are a key part of the affordable housing strategy for the city of Delta because, unlike some of these cities that have large tracts of lower density and higher density housing, there’s not a lot of that in Delta.” According to the B.C. Non-Profit Housing Agency (NPHA), which partnered with Vancity credit union to develop the Rental Housing Index for B.C., 19 per cent of Delta households are rented, with the average rent and utilities at $974. The index also found 37 per cent spend more than 30 per cent of their income on housing, a high number but not as high as places like Richmond (47 per cent) or Vancouver (46 per cent). Metro Vancouver has projected that in the next 10 years renter demand in Delta will increase by 700 more households, 190 of which will be “low income” and 370 will be “very low” income. To address that, Delta council recently endorsed Metro Vancouver’s draft Regional Affordable Housing Strategy, which includes a vision, goals and strategies as well as actions to address affordable housing needs in the region. Although the number of rental housing units coming onto the market has increased in recent years, given high construction costs and limited government funding, achieving housing estimates for the low to moderate income group is still not being met, a report notes. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has warned rental vacancy rates will continue to plunge while rental prices will increase. Those projections give even more reason to keep adding secondary suites as they’re one of the most cost-effective ways of providing additional rental housing, said de Wit.

Community Centenarian celebrates milestone birthday at West Shore Laylum SUBMITTED PHOTO
Emma Lavoie celebrated her 100th birthday at Ladner’s West Shore Laylum Care Centre with her family and friends Tuesday. Her actual birthday was on March 26. As she reflected on all the changes during those years, she enjoyed music over the decades. All the staff at West Shore Laylum wish her a happy 100th birthday.
Chocolate, Mini Egg, Egg & Jujub Mixed Breed Rabbits, Variety of colors, Suspected Males Bunnies, (Approximately 8-12 weeks old) These babies are the result of domestic rabbits being abandoned outside and breeding. They were born under a porch in Delta and when the homeowner found 6 little furry bunnies hopping around she was able to scoop them up when their mom disappeared. Rabbits are a true commitment as they live 8-10 years, being as young as they are this Easter bunch will be well socialized as long as adopters are able to take the time to handle them gently and get them used to people. Rabbits can usually be litter trained, and we’re working on it with this bunch! Once they start growing bigger we’ll be able to sex them and will likely separate them into bonded pairs for adoption!

Delta calling on artists to design heritage banner
The Corporation of Delta is once again bringing together history and art as it launches its third annual Heritage Banner Design Contest. Using the opportunity to celebrate local talent, the contest helps to raise awareness of Delta’s storied history and provides visibility to some of the incredible work from Delta’s artists. As part of the contests, residents are invited to design a heritage banner and submit it to one of the following categories: • Photography • Digital Art • Collage • Painting and Drawing • Printmaking Entries will be evaluated for their creativity, visual appeal, art and design elements, and heritage value. A winner will be selected from each of the three categories (North Delta, South Delta and Child/Youth), with one overall grand prize winner. The grand prize selection will be displayed on street banners throughout the community from January
2017 to May 2017, with each winner receiving a $350 honorarium and a street banner of their design. The contest deadline is June 1. To enter, participants must complete an entry form, a waiver form (for artwork that contains people whose identities can be clearly discerned) and a onesheet banner design submitted on DVD, CD, memory stick or minimum 8 ½ X 11 photograph of non-digital artwork (e.g., collage, print, painting or illustration). Unfortunately, due to system capacity limits, Delta is unable to accept email attachments. Last year, South Delta’s Gary Nay won the grand prize for his submission, Ours to Preserve, while Victoria Heryet, also from South Delta, won the inaugural contest in 2014 with her submission, Symbiotic Harmony. Nay’s banner is currently on display throughout the community. Victoria Heryet’s Symbiotic Harmony entry won the inaugural Heritage Banner Design Contest in 2014.

Thanks very much South Delta
On Sunday, March 20 my wife and I informed South Delta Baptist Church that we have been called to an assignment at a new church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Though we will be here for a few weeks, change causes one to reflect on all of the events that have happened during more than eight years since we arrived. God has been very good to our church. We’ve been able to create new and sustainable compassion ministries within the Delta area and around the world. We’ve become a unified congregation that is set upon the mission of reaching the world for Jesus Christ. I know that South Delta Baptist Church will continue to be an important part of our community.
Minister’s Minute PAUL JOHNSON

Wendi and I would like to say thank you. You welcomed us with open arms in 2007. You helped us assimilate into our community. Then, in 2013, we walked through the murder of our 21-year-old son Taylor. Your care over our family was amazing. Our IHIT detectives were professional and car-
ing. The social services all over our community kicked in and provided much needed help. Victim Services in Delta walked us through the entire process, including all of the legal portions of an event like this. Many others sent notes and we received wonderfully kind phone calls. Thank you all so much! We will miss you. We so much appreciate beautiful British Columbia, but we must go where God calls. So, always remember that even in the darkest times Jesus loves you. Our family is a testimony to this truth. Don’t give up. “If from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 4:29) God bless you all!

Standing desks not the saviour first thought
Well on Your Way
W P.J. WREN
e all know that sitting is bad for us. Heck, most of us feel it when we sit for too long. We feel our low back start to throb when seated on the plane. Or, our hip pain flares up when in the car for a long period of time. Or, the ache in our knees when seated at an event and we simply can’t stretch out our legs. Some of these activities we can control while others, like sitting in front of a computer all day, we can’t. If you are one the many Canadians who has
to work for a living, then you might not be able to avoid sitting while doing your job. Prolonged sitting has been linked to heart disease, a shorter life span, diabetes and cancer. One study (MayoClinic. org) compared adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the TV or other screen-based activity, with those who logged more than four hours a day. Those with the greater screen time/sit time had a nearly 50 per cent increased risk of death from any cause, and about a 125 per cent increased risk of events associated with cardiovascular disease — such as chest pain (angina) or heart attack. What’s worse, is now they have found that spending a few hours a week at the gym or otherwise engaging in other moderate to vigorous activities does not seem to offset the damages that sitting does. What does then? Well, for the past few years standing desks have
The jury is still out on whether standing desks are any better for you than sitting at a desk all day. Moving more is the key to better health. been touted as the saviour to sitting. These desks, which can be adjusted so you can work in either a sit or stand position, have become extremely popular (just Google “buy sit-stand desk” and you will get over two million hits). But do they really work? Does standing in one place do anything for your health? Recently researchers from a Cochrane work group took a look at 20 different studies with a total
of 2,174 participants. Their aim was to see if workplace interventions and changes actually helped, and if the participants sat less because of these interventions. The variety of studies that were evaluated used different forms of interventions. Some used information and counselling to encourage people to move more through the day. Others looked at software, some at mindfulness training and almost half of all the studies assessed
both shown to heighten your risk of enlarged veins (hello varicose veins). So, what do you do? How can you offset the illeffects sitting has on the body? Right now science does not have an exact answer for us. As indicated in the Cochrane study, more research, with a much larger sample group, for longer periods of time is needed. In the meantime, we must move our bodies more. We have become a society of sitters, whether it’s in the car, at a desk or in front of the TV. I think once we remember that our bodies are the machines that should be powering us through life, we will take the necessary steps (literally and metaphorically) to solve our sitting problem. Until then, give me 10 squats every time your butt hits a chair. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who sat guiltily for 90 minutes while writing this column. She can be reached at www.fitnesswithpj.com.
looked at the effects of active workstations (i.e. standing desks). What did they find? A big fat nothing. They found that none of the interventions had any real impact on our sit time, and that sit-stand desks had “very low quality of evidence” that it reduced sitting at work in the shortterm (to date there are no long-term studies). The studies also revealed that sit-stand desks did not have any considerable effects on work performance, musculoskeletal symptoms (such as low back pain) or sick leave. There were too few participants and too many poorly designed studies that no real data could be gleaned from them. Some experts also argue that simply standing in one place is really no different than sitting in one place. There is no evidence that standing for four hours, as opposed to sitting, will provide you with health benefits. In fact, prolonged sitting and standing are

Savour British Columbia
Here are just a few to savour.
SEA TO SKY John Bishop of Bishop’s in Kitsilano and Sinclair Philip of Sooke Harbour House near Victoria, launched the “eat local” movement in the 1980s, introducing diners to local delicacies such as fresh spot prawns and savoury pine mushrooms. That inspired a new generation of chefs hungry for local ingredients. That includes Vancouver’s Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co. and Chris Whittaker of Forage, who fill their tables with farm fresh
Fraser Valley ingredients. Ali Ryan of Victoria’s Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub sources produce from the nearby Cowichan Valley for her elevated pub grub. The surrounding waters provide everything from sea salt and fin fish to the briny bivalves chef James Walt serves at Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant + Oyster Bar. Explore Granville Island Public Market or join a Vancouver Foodie Tour for a sampler of Vancouver’s food scene; a pub crawl aboard the Victoria Harbour Ferries is as quintessential an experience as afternoon tea at The Empress. In Whistler, end a day of skiing with a delicious slope-side fondue or visit to the Bearfoot Bistro’s vodka tasting room.
RAINFOREST B.C’s coastal waters and lush rainforests are full of delicious things to eat: from spot prawns and Dungeness crab to wild mushrooms, berries and
fiddleheads. This is where chefs like Nicholas Nutting come to play with ingredients they can find nowhere else. Nutting leads the kitchen at Tofino’s Wolf in the Fog and previously worked at the renowned Wickaninnish Inn, where he followed the local ingredient ethos established by chef Rodney Butters. This fish and forage diet is nothing new to First Nations peoples who’ve done it for centuries. Visit the B.C. archipelago of Haida Gwaii to sample traditional fare like “k’aaw,” a delicacy of dried herring roe on kelp or snack on local specialties, like “salmon candy.”
LAKES AND VINEYARDS In the centre of B.C., a wide, fertile valley stretches between the Coastal Range and Rocky Mountains that’s dotted with a series of warm lakes ringed by sprawling acres of orchards and vineyards.
DESTINATION BC/ANDREW STRAIN
Need a last-minute budget-friendly getaway idea? Take a B.C. food trip adventure and taste the unique local flavours from around the province. From seaside to mountaintop and the verdant valleys in between, B.C.’s regional ingredients are as varied as the culinary traditions of the people who live here.
Dining at Poplar Grove Winery
Cameron Smith and Dana Ewart of Joy Road Catering came to the Okanagan on a visit from Ontario and never left. Now their long-table dinners at God’s Mountain Estate have become legendary. Also coveted are meals at winery restaurants ranging from the Grapevine Restaurant & Patio at Gray Monk Estate Winery near Kelowna, to Miradoro Restaurant at Tinhorn Creek Winery in Oliver.
MOUNTAINS Charming Kootenay towns like Fernie and Nelson are hot spots both for outdoors buffs and foodies hungry for great casual cuisine with international accents and organic ingredients.
Much of the local cuisine is inspired by Shelley Adams, formerly of Fresh Tracks Café, who’s written a series of trend-setting, internationally flavoured cookbooks that started with 2005’s Whitewater Cooks. Now visitors can end a day of skiing at Fernie with an irresistible bowl of curry, sample authentic Doukhobor borscht in Castlegar, nibble on sushi in Rossland or savour kebabs in Nelson. Eateries such as Bibo and the All Seasons Cafe in Nelson rely on local ingredients like the awardwinning Kootenay Alpine Cheese Co., heirloom garlic, wildflower honey or wines from Creston.
COWBOY COUNTRY The Cariboo is renowned for its expansive ranch lands, cowboy culture and good local eats. In Williams Lake, the Laughing Loon Pub is a popular hitching post for locals and every burger on the menu is made from local beef. You can also order award-winning local wine in cowboy country. Lillooet’s Fort Berens Estate Winery started in 2009 and its unique terroir has already earned it multiple wine awards. From sea to sky, mountain peak to valley floor, something delicious is cooking wherever you go in this vast province. Start planning with trip ideas and travel deals at ExploreBC.ca

The first evening we visited the Draft Restaurant in surf-side Mission Beach where our server, Matteo, waved his arms and said, “Of course, no question that San Diego is tops in beer. We have over 100 breweries, micro breweries and brew pubs in this county. Many are eclectic.” Then he confronted us with a mindboggling choice. Draft offered 100 local beers, with 69 served from a long line of taps. But we couldn’t help wonder: With that many taps, how can the servers possibly find the right one? We tested Matteo by ordering Cali Creamin, a vanilla cream ale by Mother Earth Brewing Company, and Devotion Belgian Blonde Ale by Lost Abbey Brewing Company and timed his response. Happily, our requested ales were back in short order, and they were superb. Sporting a moustache of foam, Ally smiled, clinked glasses and said, “I don’t usually like ale, but this is great. I can taste why craft beer has become so popular.” We were in heaven sampling ales, porters, classic lagers and IPAs. To get further insight into the fast growing beer craze, next day my dearest and I sought out the Stone Brewing Co., which was awarded the accolade “All-Time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by Beer Advocate magazine in 2013, and which many credit for leading San Diego’s beer charge. We entered their World Bistro & Gardens in Escondido, just north of the city, where you can sit inside next to the tanks and piping where their beer is made, or outside in the sunshine and warmth for which this city is famous, surrounded by an immense garden. We decided to further our research on the patio. Over a pint of Stone Pale Ale, their flagship beer, and an Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale, we also tested their kitchen. Ally bit into coconut green curry salmon and mussels while I tried the chef’s specialty,

Portuguese sausage and kale rigatoni. Yummy! Kim, the server, explained, “A big part of the brewery’s success comes from their own farm where they grow hops for the beer and food for the restaurant. Everything’s organic” Happily rubbing my tummy, I asked about their most unusual beer? “We have several experimentals like Stone Coffee Milk Stout, a bittersweet, creamy, coffee-laced stout,” responded Kim. “But my favourite is the Grapefruit Slam IPA, a double India pale ale utilizing grapefruit peel.” I was impressed, not only by the outstanding beers but also by the solar panels covering the roof. “Another reason for Stone’s success is our guardian, a gargoyle, who wards off the evil spirits of beer, namely, cheap ingredients, pasteurization and chemical

additives,” Kim said. Next evening, we entered the Yard House in the historic Gaslamp Quarter with the goal of verifying their boast of having the largest selection of draft beer in the world. Our eyes widened as we saw their “transparent” keg room, which was crammed with 600 barrels containing 4,000 gallons of beer and 130 tap handles. Wow! We were enthralled, and realized we faced a mammoth challenge. The server, Charlotte, described a range of brews, including classic lagers and obscure ales and stouts served in authentic goblets, pints and half-yard glasses. We settled for a row of tasting glasses filled with attractive fluids of different colours, foaminess and clarity. Sipping contentedly, we felt like we were in an art gallery for the walls were alive with many attractive paintings. We sampled from the menu, which offered

an array of tasty, trendy cuisine. Toasting the Yard House and its unusual keg room, we realized that good research isn’t really that difficult; it just requires perseverance. Over the next few days we visited several more breweries, but on our last day admitted that we were simply outnumbered. San Diego definitely is a champion of craft beer. We promised to return, perhaps during Beer Week in early November. So much work remains. I want to sample Oi!, a wine-barrel aged English Brown Ale by Twisted Manzanita Ales & Spirits, a Habenero Sculpin (very hot!) IPA at Ballast Point Brewing Company, a Peanut Butter Milk Stout at the Belching Beaver Brewing Co. and much more. It’s good to have challenges. Sidekick opening God of Carnage later this month
The Sidekick Players’ third production of the season, God of Carnage, opens later this month at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Written by Yasmina Reza, God of Carnage is currently in rehearsal under the direction of Todd-Elliot Gates and his assistant, Margaret Currivan. The production will feature Sidekick favourites Lisa Gach, Mark East, Emile Greene and John Kevener. Two sets of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a public park, meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the meeting goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening evolving into chaos. The play was a success in its original language, French, and has been equally acclaimed in English-translated produc-

Swimming standout staying home Markus Thormeyer opts for UBC after making verbal commitment to USC One of Canada’s top young swimmers will be continuing his promising career in local waters after all. After making a verbal commitment to the USC Trojans last fall, Tsawwassen’s Markus Thormeyer has opted to sign with the UBC Thunderbirds. The 18-year-old already has been training at UBC since September as part of Swim Canada’s High Performance Centre, under coach Tom Johnson. “I chose UBC because it is the best swimming program in Canada – they have the most CIS championship titles and the HPC, which is affiliated with the varsity team, is one of the top training centres in the country,” Thormeyer said. “Training with the team for the past few months, and getting to know Tom and everyone else, I couldn’t leave them.” Thormeyer will bring an extensive international resume to the Point Grey Campus. The Winskill Dolphins Swim Club product made his presence felt internationally at the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships. Just 16 years old at the time, Thormeyer was the youngest member of the Canadian squad. The South Delta Secondary School graduate continued to
make waves at the junior level, taking five total gold medals at the Speedo Western Canadian Swimming Championships over the 2014 and 2015 editions of the tournament. After finishing second in the 100m and 200m backstroke at the Canadian Trials over the summer, the 6-foot-5 Thormeyer made his senior national team debut at the 2015 Toronto Pan-Am Games. He led off the morning heats for the 4×100-metre freestyle, which went on to earn a bronze medal in the final. Individually, Thormeyer also left Toronto with a seventh-place finish in the 100m backstroke, as well as a 19th place showing in the 200m freestyle. Thormeyer’s ability and experience make him a massive get for the Thunderbirds and head coach Steve Price. “Markus was the top prospect in the country. as far as I’m concerned,” said Price. “He’s one of the biggest additions to our men’s program in a few years, and he is going to be great for both us and for Canada for a very long time. “Anytime a guy like that, who is so highly regarded in the NCAA, decides to stay home and swim for a program here is fantastic,” said Price. “We have a pretty great men’s team, and have already done some pretty solid recruiting for next year, but Markus coming

Orange Helmet Awards honouring Kushnir & Calvert
A pair of significant past and present contributors to football in South Delta will be honoured at next week’s B.C. Lions 2016 Orange Helmet Awards. The CFL club’s annual salute to minor, high school and university football will include Bill Kushnir being honoured in the Pioneer category and Brent Calvert receiving the Community Coach of the Year. Kushnir, who passed away in in 2009 at the age of 88, was a popular principal in the Delta School District who also served on the parks and recreation commission and school board. As a school administrator, he
laid the foundations for football programs at South Delta and Delta Secondary Schools. He also brought football to New West Secondary School. In his honour, the New West Hyacks and South Delta Sun Devils now play for the Kushnir Boot when they meet each year in conference play. Kushnir was also inducted into the Delta Sports Hall of Fame back in 2006. The Lions will also honour Joe Connelly (North Surrey) and Bill Vance (East Vancouver) in the Pioneer category. Calvert is being recognized for his outstanding job with
the South Delta Rams — leading teams to three consecutive Vancouver Mainland Football League and provincial championships without losing a single game. The perfect three-year run was completed this past season when the Rams dominated Victoria in the B.C. final. A terrific 2000 age group will now be moving onto the high school level next season, including Calvert’s son Michael who was the starting quarterback for both the Rams and South Delta Sun Devils in 2015. Carson Graham’s Brian Brady has been named Scholastic Coach of the Year — an award

South Delta’s Ray Moon was a recipient of back in 2013. The Orange Helmet Awards also serves as a major fundraiser for amateur football in B.C. So far it has generated nearly $700,000 since its inception. This year’s keynote speaker is Miami Dolphins All-Pro defensive end Cam Wake who enjoyed two outstanding seasons with the Lions in 2007-08 before taking his game to the NFL where he has been a four-time pro bowler. Presented by Coast Capital Savings, the Orange Helmet Awards take place next Thursday at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver.

One final Coastal Cup run for U18 Blues & Celtic Graduating teams begin round of 16 team play Sunday after impressive showing over the past six years MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It will be the final chapter in more ways than one when the Tsawwassen Blues and Ladner Celtic begin play this weekend in B.C. Soccer’s 63rd annual Coastal Cup Championships. The U18 Division One sides not only will be concluding outstanding runs through youth soccer, they will be representing their respective clubs one final time with the launch of the merged South Delta United Soccer Club next season. The Coastal Cup is a single knockout format and features district champions from throughout the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island in the “B” playdowns. There are also some wild card berths available with 16 teams competing in each division. The finalists and typically the third place
finisher also advance to the Provincial “B” Cup Championships in early July. The Coastal “A” Cup features exclusively teams from the Metro Selects League. The Blues have been a force in the B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League, advancing to the provincials for the past four years. Last season was a breakthrough for the girls as they captured their firstever Coastal Cup with an overtime win over Langley. They went on to finish second at provincials, falling to the Central City Breakers in the final. They are a good bet to be heading to Penticton again for the B.C. tourney after going unbeaten in the “A” group of the BCCGSL League Cup Championships, including a 3-1 win over North Shore in the final. The Blues will play

It will be a much sterner test for Celtic as they
open boys cup play with a round of 16 match against District 5 regular season champion Chilliwack Attack on Sunday (4 p.m.) at Dugald Morrison Park. Ladner will be looking for its first win over
the Attack in three tries, including a 3-2 loss in penalty kicks in league cup play back in February. Similar to the Blues, the Celtic have been a force since becoming the firstever Ladner team to reach
the Coastal “A” Cup final at U13. Even with six players moving onto the B.C. Premier Soccer League and Metro Selects the following season, Ladner still won the Delta District playdowns two years later. When many of the boys returned to their hometown club at U16, Ladner capped a dominating run by becoming just the second team in the history of Ladner Boys Soccer to win the Coastal “B” Cup. Celtic went on to capture bronze at the provincials that year. A 2-1 loss to eventual champion Kelowna kept them out of the final. Last season, Ladner reached the Coastal Cup quarter-finals before bowing out to provincial champion CCB Elite 2-1 in overtime. Corner kicks… Two other local girls teams will also be in action this weekend in the Coastal “B” Cup playdowns. The U17 Tsawwassen Blues travel to Burnaby Sunday to take on the Impact, while the U15 South Delta Selects head to Port Moody to face the Extreme. The Ladner-based U14 Delta Coastal Selects will begin boys Coastal “A” Cup play Friday at Holly turf against Burnaby at 7 p.m.
Delta ringette players off to nationals Delta will be wellrepresented on B.C. teams heading to Ontario next week for 2016 Canadian Ringette Championships in London.
In total, 48 teams from across the country will be competing in three divisions — U16, U19 and the National Ringette League (19 and over). Games

OBITUARIES
Jean was born in Semans, Saskatchewan on May 11th, 1919 and passed away in Tsawwassen, BC on March 20th, 2016 in her 97th year. During her life, Jean resided in many different locations. Some of the places she lived were Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Alberta, and Vancouver Island. Eventually, due to health reasons, Jean settled into Kin Village in Tsawwassen. One of seven children of Malcom and Jean Nicolson, Jean grew up on the family farm. Jean’s passion included riding horses, especially bareback, herding cattle, and laying on her horse’s back under a shady tree, with a good book. When she was 19, while attending college in Regina, Jean met the Love of Her Life: Calvin Leroy Stimson. And so their story began...Jean and Calvin had five children: Darryl, Dennis, Doug, Jim, and Cheri. Though life was not always easy, Jean was a consistent, caring, loving, stable presence for her family. Through her steadfast faith and unwavering Love of God, she became the matriarch who held the ever- growing family together. Jean was a gentle, sweet soul who always maintained her sense of humour. In 1976, Jean was predeceased by her husband Calvin and then in 1996 by her beloved daughter Cheri. Jean leaves a family spanning five generations who were all touched and truly blessed to have known her grace and kindness. One of Jean’s favourite Scriptures, which she often quoted was Proverbs 3: 5-6 5: Trust In The Lord with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding. And 6: In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path. There will be a Celebration of Life and Service for Jean on Saturday, April 9th at 2.00 pm at the Tsawwassen United Church, 693 53rd Street, Tsawwassen BC. For Jean’s final Resting Place, Interment will follow at a later date, in Victoria BC. In lieu of flowers, the Stimson family would appreciate donations to the South Delta Little House Society. www.littlehousesociety.ca

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Jenny. She is survived by her three children Eileen (Miguel), Robert (Tanya) and Cheryl along with her four grandchildren Roberto, Cristofer, Jakob and Colton. Jenny was very passionate about her volunteer work with London Heritage Farms in Richmond for the past 12 years and for many years she enjoyed showing her various crafts at fairs throughout the Lower Mainland. She loved her home, gardening, cooking and baking for family and friends and was always up to a new adventure. With her family she loved beachcombing and eating seafood on Mayne Island, sightseeing on Gabriola and good times spent in Chilliwack. Her love of life and enthusiasm will be greatly missed by us all. There will be no service as requested by Jenny but if anyone should want to donate to the Irene Thomas Hospice Society it would be greatly appreciated.
