Bryce Williams has been re-elected chief of the Tsawwassen First Nation. The 26-year-old came out on top in a three-way race in Wednesday’s election as TFN voters stayed the course by electing a similar looking legislature for a three-year term. Williams bested Ken Baird, who was re-elected as a member of the legislature, and Andrew Bak, a former member of the legislature. The TFN didn’t provide vote totals for each candidate, but did say that 187 out of 291 eligible members cast a ballot for a 64 per cent voter turnout, which was higher than the 2013 election. All but one of the incumbent legislators were re-elected. Elected to the legislature were: Jesseca Adams, Louise Ahlm, Ken Baird, Laura Cassidy, Tanya Corbet, Valerie Cross-Blackett, Nikki Jacobs, Andrea Jacobs, Jason Morgan, Steven Stark, Loretta Williams, Sheila Williams and Victoria Williams.
islators meet twice a week to debate and consider enacting laws and to pass the annual budget. The executive council meets weekly to manage the TFN government’s day-to-day operations. Williams was first elected chief in September of 2012, defeating six-term incumbent Kim Baird in what was considered by many outside the TFN as an upset. Members had to go to the polls again the following April after the first vote was overturned, a rematch that saw Williams defeat Baird again. The TFN government is entering its fourth mandate since its historic treaty was signed in 2009. A controversial rezoning proposal that would tear down the longtime home of the Bayside Squash Club moved closer to reality following a public hearing Tuesday. Opponents of the redevelopment application to subdivide the waterfront property in Boundary Bay showed up at municipal hall to once again try to convince Delta council to quash the plan, but the majority of civic politicians gave it conditional approval. The application for 6788 Corbould Rd. would see two single-family homes constructed after the existing building on the site is demolished. The plan requires several approvals, including an Official Community Plan amendment as well as rezoning from its current private recreation designation. The current application is the second attempt by the owner to redevelop the site. An almost identical application last year was
rejected by council. Last year, shortly after the first rezoning proposal for the site was defeated, the building’s doors were closed by the foreign owner, which meant the membership was out of a home. A demolition application has been submitted but a permit not yet issued by Delta. The Bayside Squash Club had been operating there for over 30 years. According to the planning department, the building is in poor condition and would require significant upgrades to meet municipal standards. The Bayside Squash Society says the owner was not doing any general repairs or upkeep, forcing members to try to keep things in shape themselves. The society also maintains the site had been used by hundreds of community and metro residents and was a hub of events and activities. The society asked that the current recreationalcommercial zoning for the property be maintained.

“We never asked for funding from the city, we only asked them to keep the zoning recreational to save what the community has so little of,” former society president Louise Latremouille said in a letter to members following Tuesday’s hearing. Latremouille noted keeping the current recreational zoning in place would have given the membership the time needed to raise money to buy the property. Noting the site has the only beach parking lot where kayaking, kite boarding, sailing and other water sports are allowed, she added, “The squash courts can be relocated, but Bayside can never be replaced. Its loss is a travesty for the citizens of Delta.” Councillors Sylvia Bishop and Jeannie Kanakos were the only ones to vote against the application, while Heather King voted in favour but also asked for the municipality to look for a location for a new squash and racquet facility.

Stroke recovery group to celebrate 20 years JESSICA KERR
j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta Stroke Recovery will next week celebrate two decades of helping stroke survivors and their families. Founder Karel Ley started the group in 1996 after taking part in a similar program in Richmond. Ley’s husband suffered a serious stroke in 1992. It left in him a wheelchair unable to communicate verbally. After six months of rehab, she found the stroke recovery program in Richmond and started taking him there. “It just really changed his life,” she said, adding it motivated him to get better. “That was so wonderful for him.” After her husband passed away in 1995, Ley embarked on a mission to bring a similar program to Delta. Following a story in the Optimist in March 1996, more than a dozen people came to the first meeting. “We had wonderful support from the community as well,” Ley said.

t won’t remove all our skepticism about politics, but it would be a heck of a start. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington has once again introduced legislation to ban corporate and union donations from provincial and municipal politics, and despite the obvious benefits of the bill, it could well suffer the same fate as her earlier attempts. There’s a perception out there that politicians are beholden to those that write big cheques at election time and that when decisions are made by government they tend to favour the deep pocketed rather than the average citizen. Like most perceptions, there are elements of fact and fiction to this one, but with one fell swoop Huntington’s bill could make it all a moot point. When you hear about $1,000-a-plate, or $10,000-a-plate, dinners to support a particular candidate or party, you can’t help but think those politicians are being bought. Oh sure, it might be more subtle than that, but it’s hard to believe those making contributions of that magnitude aren’t expecting something in return. Why else would they donate? A few years back I remember Delta sought a legal opinion on a potential conflict of interest after approving a development proposal put forth by a campaign donor. There was no conflict in the legal sense because everything had been declared, but the fact it even became an issue suggests there are very real concerns out there over the link between campaign contributions and government decision-making. The current arrangement here in B.C. casts a shadow that simply doesn’t need to be there. If corporate and union donations are banned, the assertion that certain donors are pulling strings disappears, or at least loses a significant amount of steam in the absence of a money trail. Does that mean right-wing governments stop favouring big business or left-leaning governments turn their backs on unions? Of course not. Those affiliations, and voting tendencies, will always be there, but without being able to draw a direct line to donors, the public just might feel that a decision was made in the best interests of all, not just a moneyed few. OK, so it might take time to eradicate our cynicism, but Huntington’s bill moves us toward that place.

have a theory on the relatively recent spike in housing values in South Delta. Theories seldom stand the test of time or scrutiny. Here’s one person’s opinion on the subject and from a non-expert at that. As to context, consider South Delta in the years prior to 1959. Ladner was a self-contained community with its retail and commercial business to support its small residential base. There was no commuting for employment because of Delta’s dominant farm and fishing industries. Ladner was replete with car dealerships, clothing and retail stores, theatre, bowling alley, you get the idea. There was little incentive to leave this area except for the odd foray to Vancouver or New Westminster for a greater variety of shopping or hospital treatment. As has been stated many times, the opening of the George Massey Tunnel dramatically changed the culture of South Delta. Fast-forward to the present. South Delta is now home to ferry and airport terminals, coal and container ports, gas and hydro lines, regional garbage and crisscrossed by regional traffic on highways 99, 17A and the South Fraser Perimeter Road. More significant, Delta residents became commuters as employment opportunities and major shopping were located north of the river. The tunnel and
Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND
bridge crossings facilitated this change with Delta offering affordable housing. As a result, South Delta’s business sector was turned on its head, with its loss of car dealerships, retail stores, theatres, etc. In a span of 50 years, South Delta became a bedroom community and a commuter-dependant society co-mingling with regional traffic. As controversial as the Agricultural Land Reserve may be to some, it has salvaged the essential character of South Delta, although the dynamics have dramatically changed. My hypothesis for the spike in housing values centers on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands and soon to open Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons shopping centres and their 1.75 million square feet of shopping and employment opportunities. And, yes, I recognize the Asian and immigration influence on
regional house pricing and its trickle down effect on Delta, but that pressure has been in place for 30 years or more. Remember Expo ‘86 and the subsequent sale of Expo lands to Asian interests? Nationally and internationally, the Lower Mainland has long held the reputation as the prime Canadian livable region. As recently as five years ago, locals were wondering whether the proposed TFN malls had any chance of success and concerns were expressed as to their financial viability. No more do we hear these concerns. While local pundits like to critique regional planning, the transportation plan now unfolding brings at least a million regional consumers at play with all highways aimed at the TFN development and South Delta’s housing market. For the first time in over half a century, South Delta residents new and old won’t be motivated to exit the community for a complete shopping experience. South Delta’s attractive lifestyle and amenities have achieved regional recognition and with it the recent spike in residential values. Seems pricing has essentially doubled in a few short years. Our modest first home in Ladner recently sold for $1.25 million. Go figure. And a good night to you, Bob. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Senior grateful for the help of caring community
Editor: Last Saturday while walking across the parking lot I was bumped by a car backing out. Fortunately, apart from a few scrapes and bruises, I was not badly hurt, although I was rather shaken (I am 83). The driver, Sue, stopped
immediately and was very concerned. Within seconds, I was surrounded by several staff members from Vancity. They were so kind I would like to thank them all for all their help. To the ladies who took me into the office and dealt with my wounds,
to the young man who heaved me off the pavement — no easy task, I can assure you — and to Sue who drove me home, I really am OK, although a bit stiff today. We really do live in a caring community. Janet Folkes

From actual posted Port Metro Vancouver figures, container traffic between 2014 and 2015 increased by 4.6 per cent, not five per cent, but that’s a moot point. From 2008 to 2015, containers movements increased 18 per cent. Included in these figures is an increase of 80 per cent in U.S. containers handled by PMV but a decline of 2.3 per cent in Canadian containers during that

Editor: The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is illogical for too many reasons. It is time for the province to take the advice of Metro Vancouver and use the $3.5 billion to actually help develop a transit plan that will reduce congestion. The mega bridge is higher and longer than it needs to be because the purpose is to industrialize the Fraser River with jet fuel, coal and LNG. The Fraser River has hosted environmentally sound industries for 100 years like fishing and lumber so let’s make smart decisions that support our economy, move our traffic and, most of all, protect the most important salmon run in the world. The premier needs to work with local government and not continue this illusion of public consultation with ridiculous publicity stunts like the “Debunking the Myths” presentation that Minister Todd Stone tried to sell last week. The people are smarter than the province realizes and will not be fooled by the propaganda the tunnel replacement team has attempted to sell the last four years. It is time to revisit the previous transit plan that former minister Kevin Falcon had developed and admit the tnnel replacement project is not the best answer. An upgraded tunnel is more cost effective and less disruptive to the

Fraser River. A twinned tunnel would allow for better traffic movement and the creation of an expanded rapid transit corridor. The reason a tunnel was built in the first place is because the land on the Richmond side is at extreme risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake or dredging. The facts haven’t changed in 1,000 years. The silt deposited in Richmond and Delta is suitable for a tunnel that can flex as needed and not suitable for a huge bridge. The province needs to listen and learn from the local governments who know best how to create a transit corridor that will move us forward in a modern and effective way. Replacing George Massey Tunnel to have zero impact on LNG plans
Medical clinic site not part of Winskill
facility is already helping B.C.’s transportation industry and remote domestic communities reduce reliance on diesel — a move that reduces costs while lowering carbon emissions. Ever since the English Bay oil spill this past summer, we’re all sensitive to the risk of using heavy oil and diesel as a marine fuel. With stricter marine emission regulations coming into force in North America, LNG is seen by many as an opportunity to help reduce that risk. In fact, a study commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund Canada related to shipping in the Arctic found that switching to LNG from heavy fuel oil would mean a reduction in all pollutants, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.
And the safety risks associated with spills are greatly reduced. As the WWF-Canada study observed, LNG dissipates into the atmosphere almost immediately. Natural gas is a safe and versatile energy source that has long been a part of our everyday lives in Delta. We’re committed to an open dialogue with residents about our operations and expansion plans at Tilbury. We encourage people to visit our new interactive website, TalkingEnergy.ca, to learn more about LNG and the Fraser River and ask us questions directly. Earthwise offering site tour so you can pick your volunteer activity
Richard Louv’s anticipated new book, Vitamin N: The Essential Guide to a Nature-Rich Life, is out on April 12 and, in the days leading up to Earth Day, is sure to stimulate conversations about the “nature vitamin.” The best-selling author argues that it is no longer enough to strive for a sustainable future, we need to create our own naturefilled world, starting now. Earthwise Society provides opportunities for people to rediscover their connection with the natural world through volunteering at the Earthwise Garden and Farm in
Boundary Bay. On Wednesday, April 20 at 4 p.m., join Earthwise expert guides for a site tour and conversation about where to start. The tour is open to anyone interested in learning how to help create, sustain and enjoy nature with others at the three-acre Earthwise site. The tour will point out how the diverse plantings of the Earthwise Garden increase biodiversity, support healthy pollinator populations, and provide habitat for owls, barn swallows, songbirds and frogs. Visitors will also take an inside look into the
operation of a small-scale organic farm that serves as learning ground for volunteers, apprentices, youth and a new generation of growers. From retired professionals to young families, volunteers of all ages pitch in to plant, grow and share the earth’s bounty. Discover scores of practical ways you can get involved and, in so doing, inspire other gardeners to make a small contribution to a nature-filled world. The Earthwise Farm and Garden are at 6400-3rd Ave. Call 604-946-9828 or email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca.
Volunteers are essential for communities to bloom
Volunteers are the roots of strong communities. And just like roots are essential for trees to bloom, volunteers are essential for communities to bloom. Thanks to volunteers, communities grow strong and resilient. Even the tiniest volunteer effort
leaves a profound and lasting trace in a community, much like tree rings that appear over time. Volunteers nourish our lives with their energy, skills and talents. Through volunteering, people also become rooted in their communities, connecting to the
people and places where they live. April 10 to 16 is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate and thank Canada’s 12.7 million volunteers. It is a time to express gratitude for what volunteers and volunteering does for all of us.

From hunting regulations to climate change, volunteers provide advice to local government on a variety of issues. The Corporation of Delta works with at least 100 volunteers across Ladner, Tsawwassen and North Delta, which make up 14 committees that provide input to municipal government. Each committee looks after a specific issue, ranging from heritage preserva-
tion to support for seniors to parks, recreation and culture. Each year, a chair and a vice-chair for every committee will appoint volunteers that will have an advisory role, bringing their local experience and knowledge to make recommendations to Delta’s mayor and council. A unique opportunity, the committees give the public a voice with which to participate in municipal decision-making. “They’re serving as a representative voice of a
community,” said deputy municipal clerk Sandra MacFarlane. “Input is very available.” Some volunteer positions require a certification of expertise, such as the advisory design panel, which looks after the design and construction of buildings. Most of the committees, however, look for people who are simply active and interested in specific community issues. Committee meetings are often held on a monthly basis and are also open to the public for observation.

The Delta Police Department is supported by over 250 volunteers. With programs spread across the municipality, the department has volunteers working on a number of fronts, everything from community police stations to reserve constables. Community police stations feature at least a dozen programs that offer volunteering opportunities. These range from Child Find, which provides documentation for parents of young children, to Community Crime Watch, a volunteer-run patrol on Friday and Saturday nights that reports suspicious activity to police. “It’s a really good, high visibility crime prevention,” A/Sgt. Cathy Geddes said of Community Crime Watch, “especially when we just don’t have the manpower.” There are also several programs where ICBC works with volunteers to prevent speeding, cellphone use while driving and auto theft.
Volunteers help with traffic safety. Delta is also one of the only communities to offer a program like the Citizens Are Security Active. Upon request, volunteers will conduct security checks on homes for residents while they are away on vacation or for an extended period of time. As well, department volunteers offer support to victims of crime and trauma. Volunteers helping Reach expand its reach in Delta PRISCILLA LEUNG

Ladner’s Reach Child and Youth Development Society has plans to stretch its reach across South Delta this year. Reach, a non-profit charitable organization, has been supporting families with special needs children for over 50 years now. “Our goal is to try to keep families united,” said executive director Renie D’Aquila. It does so with the help of more than 60 volunteers, who serve on two managing boards, one for overseeing programs and one for fundraising and events, as well as at its children’s thrift store and through its numerous programs. Work on Reach’s new facility at Memorial Park began earlier this week as crews are getting set to demolish the Kin House. Currently based in East Ladner, the society intends

These thanks go the volunteer drivers, the Board Members, and last but not least, the Girl Guides and Brownies who every Christmas, make their own contribution by actually making cookies and other goodies, and delivering them personally to our customers.

Reach has raised $4 million of the $5 million price tag for the project and is hoping to meet its goal through upcoming events, such as the fourth annual Reach for the Stars gala on April 23 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. “It’s all of these people
behind the scenes that strengthen the community,” said D’Aquila. Other volunteers take on a more interactive approach by supporting the many programs offered by Reach, including therapy and preschool development. Its volunteer-run thrift store, FINDS, also hopes to double its staff and expand shop hours.
Finally, I would also like to thank once again, the local citizens and business organisations for the financial help provided to Delta Meals on Wheels during this past year. Without your help in volunteering these funds, there was a grave danger of being unable to continue our work. Thank you all most sincerely, Maurice Newby, President, Delta Meals on Wheels Society.

The Tsawwassen and Ladner branches of the Royal Canadian Legion have had the support of hundreds of volunteers over the years. The Ladner Legion has been supporting veterans as well as local organizations and charities for 86 years. The Legion raises money from its many special events, everything from live music and dances every weekend to its biggest fundraiser, the May Days beer garden in Memorial Park, Some volunteers have been with the branch for over 30 years. While the club would not mind seeing a greater number of younger members volunteering at its events, other dedicated members have been regularly helping out with the meat draws that have been
taking place every weekend for nearly 15 years. “The Legion couldn’t run without volunteers,” says Jacky Hillairet, manager of the Ladner Legion. “We might as well shut the doors without them.” Volunteers have lent a hand with organizing pancake breakfasts and Sunday dinners, such as the upcoming Mother’s Day steak and crab feast. During the holidays, volunteers assist with putting together Christmas hampers for those in need. As one of its major fundraisers, the Ladner Legion hopes to continue with the success of its games department, which includes ongoing draws and raffles. Members at the Tsawwassen Legion also put on meat draws and jam sessions on the weekends with a live band. Earlier this year, the branch organized and
hosted a Super Bowl party and a Valentine’s Day dinner for its members. The Tsawwassen Legion has served the community for more than two decades and has made over $250,000 in donations to worthwhile outreach programs. The Tsawwassen Legion has made recent donations to Honour House Society, Delta Hospital Foundation, George Derby Centre, Amos Ferguson Manor, Delta Mental Health, Hurricane Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Boys and Girls Club and other worthy outreach programs. During the holiday season, volunteers take part in the annual toy drive benefit concert, which raises cash and a truckload of toys for Deltassist’s Toy Depot, as well as fill and deliver Christmas hampers to needy recipients in Delta.

Daisies and dinosaurs. Orchids and orangutans. Tiger-lilies and elephant ears. The South Delta Artists Guild’s new show, Flora and Fauna, gives its members full licence to delve into their imaginations for subject matter, and the results are now on display in Tsawwassen’s Gallery 1710. There are many awardwinning artists among the guild’s 142 members,
and their paintings, all for sale, include work in oil, watercolour, acrylic, penand-ink, pastel and collage, plus a creative mix of unusual materials. Flora and Fauna runs through May 1, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. The guild, a completely volunteer-run society, recently conducted a wide-ranging survey seeking comment, new ideas and input from its members, and the result is proving both positive and
forward-looking. Action has already been taken on one result, which showed that 30 per cent of members are still working and so cannot attend any of the guild’s weekday activities, such as daily drop-in programs and workshops. Therefore, a twice-monthly evening program will begin Wednesday, May 11, at Gallery 1710, headed by Geof Hacker, Marlene Strain and Lennart Osterlind. This will be a combi-
nation of workshop and drop-in, running 7 to 9.30 p.m., providing subject matter, instruction and help from three of the guild’s most respected artists. The program will run monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday. Further information can be found at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com. The guild’s highlyrespected juried annual Oil and Water exhibition and competition, first held in 2004, will run this year
from June 2 to 25, earlier than before to better accommodate summer traffic. The open-to-all event is expected to draw many entries competing for more than $3,000 in prizes, including $1,000 from the guild, with many other awards thanks to the generosity of local donors. Deadline for entries is Sunday, May 8, and full details on registration and the prospectus are available at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com.
WWII refugee shares his story in new book DAVE WILLIS

Tsawwassen’s Marian Wiacek, who was deported from Poland to Siberia during the Second World War, tells his story with his new memoir, Window to Freedom: A Journey of Survival. Wiacek, 86, who used his old journals to write the book, was forced out of his home, along with his mother and siblings, in Korzec by Soviet soldiers in February of 1940. He was only 10. “Somehow at that age I managed to take it as a reality in a sense,” he says. His father had already been taken away by Soviet secret police for being a captain in the Polish Reserve and was eventually killed with thousands of other officers in the Katyn woods, a press release about the book notes. “(The book) documents the story
of a youngster who used his intelligence, resourcefulness and determination to help not only himself but his younger siblings as well as his mother, survive conditions of starvation and terror while on a journey that lasted seven years,” the release adds. The journey took the young refugee from Siberia to Persia, Africa, Palestine and eventually England. Wiacek says it took about two years to write the book, a project he concentrated on after his wife Danuta passed away. He first came to Canada in 1973 and worked for Duracell as a product developer and manager. Wiacek now lives with his daughter and her family in Tsawwassen. He has a book signing scheduled for Saturday, April 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Albany Books in Tsawwassen. For more on his self-published book, visit www.windowtofreedom. com.

Band will ‘Step to it!’ at its upcoming concert
T
he march is a fundamental form of music most of us recognize as a mainstay in parades or the halftime show at football games, but as a unique concert hosted by Delta Concert Band on Saturday, April 16 will show, there’s much more to this specialized musical genre than meets the eye — and ears. The concert — The March: Step to it! — at the Langley campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University will be a highly-entertaining crash course in the history, form, elements and styles of march music. It is sponsored by Third Age Learning at Kwantlen (TALK), a seniors special education group. Delta Concert Band musical director Jim Tempest, who is also a highly-regarded Vancouverbased music educator, will lecture on all the fascinating elements of march music. He will then lead Delta Concert Band’s more than 40 accomplished adult musicians to bring the lecture to life with music. The band has been based in Delta for more than 50 years. “This is really a unique kind of concert and a rare opportunity for music lovers to learn about a musical form that is sometimes

The Delta Concert Band performed at KinVillage last weekend. The band is on the road next weekend with a concert and lecture at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley either taken for granted or not well understood,” Tempest says. Known particularly for a strong, steady beat originally intended to lead troops on the march stretching back to Roman times, the march has now found its way into nearly every type of music, including symphonies, operas, Hollywood movies, Broadway musicals and even
jazz. Consequently, there are now many different kinds of marches. They can be slow and sombre like a funeral march, bright and quick such as the circus march, patriotic like a military march, energized and glitzy as you’ll see in Broadway show marches or full of pomp and circumstance as they were in the Victorian era
when Britannia ruled the waves. The earliest written marches began to appear in the late 16th century. However the genre became popular in the 19th century with the extensive development of wind instruments, especially the brass variety. Regardless, even classical composers such as Mozart,
Beethoven and Mahler wrote marches into their symphonies, operas and sonatas. National march styles have also evolved. British marches are often slower in tempo and feature intricate counter-melodies, German marches commonly have a strong polka rhythm while French marches usually have a strong emphasis on the first beat. But it’s American marches that are likely the best-known, especially those written by the late, great John Philip Sousa, while South American marches feature a strong Latin beat. The Delta Concert Band program will feature a wide variety these march musical styles including well-known numbers such as Colonel Bogey, The St. Louis Blues March, Seventy Six Trombones, Triumphal March from Aida as well as John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme. Registration with TALK is required by April 8. Tickets are $20 for TALK members and $30 for non-member, and include lunch. The concert runs from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the KPU Langley Campus, 20901 Langley Bypass. For more information, visit kpu.ca/talk or call 604-599-3077.

Listen to Your Mother was created by Ann Imig in 2010 with the aim of giving motherhood a microphone. The production, which now takes place in 41 cities across North America, features local writers sharing their stories of motherhood. She says she was drawn to the project because she appreciates the tag line Giving Motherhood a Microphone. Reid used to be a stayat-home mom but now works outside the home as well. She says she has been to dinner parties in the past where when she told people she stayed at home with her children, the conversation essentially stopped. “It’s the last job to get any respect,” she says. SUSAN FURTADO Saturdays April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, Time 2-4:30pm Total Cost for all 5 session $200.00 This group is designed for adults who are faced with depression and/or anxiety concerns and would like to learn strategies to help manage distress and improve wellbeing from a mindfulness and heartfulness perspective. The mind and the body are intimately connected, and by gaining the skills to allow us to pay attention to the signals our body gives us, healing can take place. Mindfulness Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (MCBT) is an evidence-based treatment approach proven to be effective in helping to manage and reduce the impacts of depression and anxiety. This workshop will focus on learning about anxiety and depression and bringing awareness to the patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that contribute to your symptoms. Susan will help you develop coping strategies including positive self-talk, cognitive restructuring, relaxation and mindfulness, compassionate self-care, and goal setting. The goals of the group are to build a greater understanding of your symptoms and establish self-help tools for life-long management of depression and anxiety. Workshop Depression and Nutrition Sunday April 17, 2016 2-4:300pm Cost $45.00 You may be aware of the connection between nutritional deficiencies and physical illness but did you know that there is also a strong link between nutrition and symptoms of depression? Nutrition can play a key role in the onset as well as severity and duration of depression, and many of the eating patterns that
precede depression are the same as those that occur during depression. These may include poor appetite, overeating, skipping meals, and a dominant desire for sweet foods. Participants will learn about the nutritional imbalances that may make you prone to depression and how you can make improvements to your nutritional intake and overall well-being. Mood and Food Workshop Sunday April 24, 10-2:30pm Cost $45.00 Do you want to learn more about the link between nutrition and mental health? Participants will be encouraged to learn nutritional habits that can naturally help to stabilize symptoms of mood swings, depression and anxiety. Anxiety and Nutrition Workshop Tuesday April 26, 2016, 6:30-9pm Cost $45.00 Participants will understand how anxiety can prevent us from eating mindfully and learn how to separate anxiety from hunger by developing 9 easy steps to calm your anxious mind and body with wholesome and nutritious foods. charmed and challenged in light of our western first world perspective. We were also able to speak of experiences from our life here in Canada. We were interested to share the experience of our child, with a disability, as she is fully included in the education system here. At the same time we learned that the idea of inclusion in India still struggles to fully recognize and support women, girls and children of poverty in education systems. This kind of cross-cultural engagement with the lives of everyday people in India certainly raises a keen awareness of both the gifts and challenges in our world.

Having been on a three-month sabbatical for December, January and February, I am just back in my office this last month, so I wish to thank Rev. Vida Jaugelis for filling this spot while I have been away. My family and I had the great joy of being able to travel in India for a month. The offer to visit Mission Partners through the church of North India opened many opportunities to bring greetings from Canada and the United Church of Canada. We met and were wholeheartedly welcomed by many wonderful people through friends, church connections and schools. We listened to many life

Exploring Rarotonga, queen of the Cook Islands tural village sprawls over the lush inland property just seven kilometres from the island’s vibrant hub of Avarua, and beneath Polynesian-style amphitheatres, knowledgeable natives reveal historical tidbits. Lara, a brown-eyed beauty, wearing a fullfaced smile and fragapani behind one ear, begins our journey back in time: “Nobody’s really sure where our ancestors originated from, but we do know that this little fellow was the fisherman’s God for good luck.” We discover the first recorded sight of a Cook Island was by Alvaro de Mendana, a Spanish chap, way back in 1595. Exploration in the area remained dormant until 1773, when the famed Captain James Cook came along, and although this well-known explorer never set foot on Rarotonga, the entire chain adopted his name. “Raro” was actually discovered by Fletcher Christian, a first mate mutineer, soon after Captain Bligh and his boys

Although early artisans once removed this appendage, today his entire image stands visibly intact and is even minted on a special coin. Tangaroa, the Maori guardian of the ocean, is a well-known deity of the Cook Islands and is one of the first carved artifacts we encounter during our recent Rarotonga experience. The Cook Islands sprinkle over two million kilometres of the South Pacific, and though just west of Tahiti and south of Hawaii, they are idyllically removed from any commercialized bustle. Rarotonga is the queen bee of them all, and during our visit we discover how her roots entwine with present day treasures. The award-winning cul-

Lara wraps up the condensed Cook history lesson by sharing the spiritual movement that took place in the 1820s. “Polynesian missionaries successfully transformed the population of angry cannibals to Christians,” she informs, “and all in less than a year’s time.” Now that’s conversion! Sunday remains a day of rest, and church continues to be a cornerstone in Cook Island culture today. Although there are

varied denominations, 70 per cent of the population attends Presbyterian services. And as we had discovered the day before, a visit to one of these Sabbath sanctuaries is well worth it. Initially the set-up appeared pretty much apropos. From a pedestal platform the reverend delivered the sermon and although I couldn’t decipher a word of the Maori message, I perked right up when he instructed, “We’ll now sing a traditional hymn.”
There wasn’t a song book in sight, but it was obvious the regulars knew every word by heart. One male voice took the lead, then a few more joined in, and before long the congregation was bringing down the roof in a-capella harmony. Soulful togetherness oozes beyond the hallowed halls of the whitewashed limestone chapels. Rarotonga time is like being in slow-mo. There’s no rush hour, fast food chains or big box stores. Billowy palms line sandy shores and canopy the 32 kilometres of grey asphalt that rings this South Pacific gem. A secondary road bisects the lush tropical interior and is flanked by humble cyclone-proof cinderblock homes and flourishing crops. “Taro, arrowroot and coconut are our primary staples,” we’re informed by James, a gregarious guide, who mans the final station of our cultural tour. Like followers of the Pied Piper, we’ve traipsed the trails to a number of thatched roof outposts, and united with
Kiwis, Aussies and other Canadians, to learn how to create everything from grass skirts (papas) made from Mulberry bark, to primitive bowls using spiky pandana leaves. Now, as well as furnishings and fashions, we discover there’s enough goodness in the harvested hills to sustain year-round living. With one swift machete swing, James slices a hairy fruit husk in half and samples the sweet coconut nectar. The tasty treat later finds its way to our crafty bowls where it complements marinated chicken, breadfruit and other home-grown favourites. And while dining on the finger-licking grub, we’re entertained by “hypnotic” dancers who gyrate erotically to the beat of slit drums. It’s a grand finale to the three-hour tour, a scrumptious pairing with cultural enrichment, and a feast fit for any God or Goddess, even if they aren’t related to Tangaroa the great. e’re not only about cruise deals! We have an outstanding offer for over 20 well-known 5 star all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Jamaica and Curacao. You’ve probably heard of “surprise” hotel deals – where the big online agencies get you a fantastic deal on a 5 star property, but don’t tell you which one it is until after you book. Basically it’s because the hotel wants to fill the property without being seen publicly doing so. Our deal only requires that you sign up (for free) to our private emails and then we’re allowed to tell you the actual resort options – and then you decide if you want to book. The travel must be completed by December 21, 2017. The resort company will be in touch with you before you arrive to go over details and will invite you to participate in their various amenities and programs (which are totally at your discretion to do so). Unlimited premium drinks and amazing food, along with many activities, taxes and fees are included, but air is additional. The resorts we have are normally more than double this price. There are adult only and family resort choices. When you find out which properties we have, you’ll agree with me about the incredible value!

Sidekick auditioning for its final production of season
The Sidekick Players will be auditioning their last production of the season, Looking, a hilarious comedy by Norman Foster, later this month. Looking is being directed for Sidekick by Jacqollyne Keath and will run from June 9 to 25 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Matt and Andy have shared a friendship for years. Unfortunately, they have also shared the same relationship status for years (single), and so now they reluctantly share their emotional baggage and problems whenever they get together. Val and Nina are also
long-time friends; they are similarly questioning their lives. All four are “looking” for more in life, looking for someone to fill the void that was left after their failed marriages. So Andy, in desperation, puts an ad in the personals column. Val, in desperation, reads the ad and sees some potential. With the help of their friends as buffers, they agree to a double date, meeting at a downtown pub named The Private Dick. Classic situational comedy ensues as male-female agendas meet amid firstdate insecurities. Audition dates are Monday, April 18 and
Tuesday, April 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the arts centre. Callbacks, if needed, will be Monday, April 25. The cast includes two males and two female who can play mid-40s to mid50s: • Val (45-55) is an OR nurse • Andy (45-55) is in the storage business • Nina(45-55) is a police officer • Matt (45-55) is the host of a morning radio show This is a non-equity production. Audition will include a cold read from the play. Contact the director at directorsidekick@gmail.com for more information.
God of Carnage opens next week in Tsawwassen
The Sidekick Players’ third production of the season, God of Carnage, opens a three-week run at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre April 14. Two sets of parents, one of whose child has hurt the other at a pub-
lic park, meet to discuss the matter in a civilized manner. However, as the meeting goes on, the parents become increasingly childish, resulting in the evening evolving into chaos. God of Carnage runs
until April 30, with performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. There will also be two matinees, Sunday, April 17 and 24, at 2 p.m. To reserve seats, call 604-288-2415.

The Delta chapter of the Council of Canadians is hosting a community forum with Dr. Shiv Chopra next week to explain. The forum will be held Tuesday, April 12 at the Ladner Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. Chopra is a former Health Canada food safety regulator and now is head of the Canadian Council on Food Sovereignty. He was instrumental in stopping bovine growth hormone (rBGH) coming into Canada, thereby ensuring the safety of our dairy supply when he was with Health Canada. LAX 4 LIFE fundraiser goes Saturday
Delta Lacrosse will officially usher in the 2016 season Saturday with its 5th annual LAX 4 LIFE fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. The 12-hour fun game for all ages and sizes takes place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre.
Coach returns to guide Pioneers Ross Frehlick will be back behind bench in coming Senior “B” lacrosse season MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Ladner Pioneers have reached into their past as they look to return to glory in the future. The West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association club has welcomed back Ross Frehlick as head coach. He will be joined by assistants Derek Murrell, Thomas Haydon and Greg Rennie. All four are alumni players. Frehlick’s 25-year run with the club as a player and coach ended in 2010 when the Pioneers fell in the WCLSA semi-finals to the Tri-City Bandits. Ladner had loaded up on short term talent by bringing in NLL players Kyle Goundrey, Gary Bining and Kevin Hansen.
However, it wasn’t enough to take out a Bandit team that also had its share of star players as Burnaby hosted the President’s Cup that year. Frehlick has still been very active with the club alumni over the last five years and also has served as an assistant coach with the Delta Intermediate “A” Islanders. He will continue that role this coming season. Bob Taylor and Sam Thauli oversaw a complete youth movement since Frehlick’s departure, loading up mainly on local talent from Delta’s two junior teams. Ladner remained competitive but a league championship has remained elusive over that stretch. The Pioneers were 15-1-0 at one point last season but stum-
bled late and were eventually swept in the finals by Nanaimo. It’s been nine years since Ladner last won the WCSLA championship and it’s Frehlick’s mandate to get the club back to nationals. “Visiting teams use to dread coming to Ladner and from what I have heard that’s not really the case anymore,” said Frehlick. “Intimidation was a big part of this club’s past success. I’m not saying we should be playing dirty lacrosse but certainly more intimidating.” Frehlick will also make it clear he wants a 100 percent commitment from his players right through the entire schedule. Player availability has been an issue in recent years, including post-season games.
“I just don’t get how guys can be there from the start and then miss playoff games. That never happened when I was playing and I intend on making that pretty clear,” he said. “Maybe it’s a different era now. It’s one of those things we are going to figure out starting Thursday night (at the team’s first practice).” Frehlick’s first move was welcoming back Rob Cook. The standout goaltender retired last season but is here for more year at the age of 47. He will share the crease duties with Matt Moorehouse. “We are bringing ‘Cookie’ back for one more season then giving him a proper send off,” added Frehlick. “He is probably the greatest goalie to ever play in this league.”

finals. It couldn’t get much better for the Coastal Selects girls teams as four of the five were round of 16 winners. The U18 Coastal Attack rolled to a 4-0 victory over West Coast Metro and will now face a North Shore team that knocked out the Coastal Sting 5-2. The U16 Coastal Selects slipped past Guildford 1-0 and head to West Vancouver this weekend. In U14 action, Delta prevailed 1-0 over CCB Elite last Sunday in Ladner to earn a trip to Nanaimo on Saturday to take on the Upper Island Selects. The U13 Coastal Selects defeated West Vancouver 1-0 and will be at Dugald Morrison Park on Sunday to take on Vancouver at 2:30 p.m. The U15 Selects received an opening round bye and will host Port Coquitlam Sunday in North Delta. In boys play, the U14 Selects blanked Burnaby 3-0 last Friday at Holly Park to secure another home game against Vancouver. That match will take place on Sunday at South Surrey Athletic. The U15s produced a 3-1 win over Richmond and will look for more success on the road Saturday against Port Moody. Defending Coastal and Provincial “A” Cup champion U16 Coastal Selects opened with a 3-1 win over ICSF and will host Surrey United Guildford on Saturday in South Surrey.
Tsawwassen Blues U18 and U17 girls rep soccer teams are marching on to the quarter-final round of the Coastal “B” Cup Championships. The defending champion U18 Blues did the expected in their round of 16 match with Alouette Albion — rolling to a 6-0 victory over the Division 3 side last Sunday in Maple Ridge. Tsawwassen now heads to Langley to take on the Wolves — a Division 1A league rival it has faced three times this season with an unbeaten 2-0-1 record. Meanwhile, the U17 Blues have reached the elite eight with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Burnaby Impact. That will bring the girls back home Sunday to take on the Aldergrove Vipers. Kickoff is noon at the Dugald Morrison turf field. In boys “B” cup action, the U18 Ladner Celtic saw its run through youth soccer come to an end with a 7-1 home field loss to the Chilliwack Attack. The high-flying visitors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead and dominated much of the territorial play with their potent transition game. Ladner managed make it 2-1 in the early stages of the second half but the Attack responded with five unanswered goals. It was a solid weekend for the Delta Coastal Selects program in the Coastal “A” Cup playdowns with several teams extending their seasons to the quarter-

REA, John Harley
May 5, 1936 - March 25th, 2016) Harley Rea left us peacefully and surrounded by love on March 25th. He leaves wife Jan Salvador, children Micheal (Patricia) Yarosloski, David and Sandra Rea with warm and wonderful memories. Predeceased by son Scott, parents Ted and Helen Rea and brother Cleve (Lorraine). Harley was raised in Marwayne, Alberta where, by all accounts he and brother Cleve, had a charmed childhood. Harley was a proud member of the RCMP, joining in January 1956 and retiring as a S/Sgt in 1983. During his career he specialized in Telecommunications and, among his many accomplishments; he was instrumental in implementing CPIC in Western Canada. After retiring from the RCMP he worked in the Telecommunications field for the Federal Government (GTA), St. Paul’s Hospital and UBC. Upon retiring, yet again, he was presented with “Toni” a boxer puppy who became his constant companion and was the impetus behind the formation of Delta Doggy Doo which Harley and his friend Ray Hill ran for a number of years. Entering firmly into retirement he became an awesome winemaker, amateur gourmet chef and puttered away hours in his workshop. Harley hosted Thursday “wine & snivel” night for close to 25 years where friends could drop in for a glass of wine and solve the world’s problems. He will be missed by his grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, the Rea and Salvador nieces and nephews. Uncle Harley was their favourite, and all the extended families. Harley’s biggest joy in life was his family and friends. You are invited to a Celebration of Life on what would have been his 80th Birthday, at 1:30 pm on Thursday May 5th at Delta Town and Country Inn, 6005 Hwy 17A (at Hwy 99), Delta, BC. Please wear a bit of green so his beautiful Irish eyes will be smiling. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. Jean was born in Semans, Saskatchewan on May 11th, 1919 and passed away in Tsawwassen, BC on March 20th, 2016 in her 97th year. During her life, Jean resided in many different locations. Some of the places she lived were Saskatchewan, South Dakota, Alberta, and Vancouver Island. Eventually, due to health reasons, Jean settled into Kin Village in Tsawwassen. One of seven children of Malcom and Jean Nicolson, Jean grew up on the family farm. Jean’s passion included riding horses, especially bareback, herding cattle, and laying on her horse’s back under a shady tree, with a good book. When she was 19, while attending college in Regina, Jean met the Love of Her Life: Calvin Leroy Stimson. And so their story began...Jean and Calvin had five children: Darryl, Dennis, Doug, Jim, and Cheri. Though life was not always easy, Jean was a consistent, caring, loving, stable presence for her family. Through her steadfast faith and unwavering Love of God, she became the matriarch who held the ever- growing family together. Jean was a gentle, sweet soul who always maintained her sense of humour. In 1976, Jean was predeceased by her husband Calvin and then in 1996 by her beloved daughter Cheri. Jean leaves a family spanning five generations who were all touched and truly blessed to have known her grace and kindness. One of Jean’s favourite Scriptures, which she often quoted was Proverbs 3: 5-6 5: Trust In The Lord with all your heart and lean not into your own understanding. And 6: In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path. There will be a Celebration of Life and Service for Jean on Saturday, April 9th at 2.00 pm at the Tsawwassen United Church, 693 53rd Street, Tsawwassen BC. For Jean’s final Resting Place, Interment will follow at a later date, in Victoria BC. In lieu of flowers, the Stimson family would appreciate donations to the South Delta Little House Society. www.littlehousesociety.ca

Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
