Cuts to offset $3.38M shortfall Reductions to be felt throughout district as school trustees grapple with yet another deficit SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta school board is looking at another round of cuts as it faces a $3.38 million operating deficit. The budget for 2016/17 made public today has a shortfall despite an increase in fund-

ing of $60 per pupil from the Ministry of Education. Unlike last year, when the board had a $2.06 million shortfall and made only a few cuts, the measures to balance the budget this time around will involve reductions on many fronts. “It’s difficult to look at a reduction anywhere that doesn’t

have some impact either directly or trickled down on schools,” secretary treasurer Joe Strain said while explaining the budget situation to the Optimist this week. Cuts include reducing secondary supervision assistants to just one per school and removing secondary library technicians,

which will leave just one position working out of the Delta Manor Education Centre. Other cuts include reducing school board office supplies and services, removing the secondary school equipment repair budget, which may leave schools to fund their own repairs, reducing the media library opera-

tion and reducing the district’s French coordinator hours. Additional reductions include potentially reducing six full-time special education assistants, unless enough extra funding comes through, and reducing the allocation of teaching staff by six positions. REVENUES: see page 3

Three years after launching the North Delta Seniors Bus program, a similar initiative is coming to South Delta. Delta council approved a one-year lease on a wheelchair accessible bus for the program Monday night. On the heels of the success of the North Delta program, there was always a commitment to expand it to South Delta, said Coun. Sylvia Bishop. “Accessible and affordable transportation is an ongoing issue for seniors,” states a staff report presented to civic politicians. “With an aging population in Delta, this had accelerated the demand for inexpensive transportation options for seniors.” Service will be provided to individuals that require transportation that is otherwise not readily available. Smoke drives tenant out Madison Paage’s health issues flare up when she spends time in her unit SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Second-hand smoke is an annoyance for most, but it’s leaving Madison Paage in a tough spot. Having moved to KinVillage’s North Court apartment building in Tsawwassen earlier this year, Paage said she now spends hours sitting at McDonald’s and nights sleeping in her car because of cigarette smoke from neighbours. Paage said she had been told by the society running the subsidized independent living complex that smoking in the building was being phased out, although four existing smokers were “grandfathered” prior to the change. Paage claims far more tenants are smoking and getting away with it, adding her health issues flare up every time she spends some time in her unit. “I need somewhere to go. I can’t continue to breathe that stuff. This is putting me at risk,” she said. Paage, who said she’s tried every avenue, even raised her issue with B.C. Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie, who visited Delta a few weeks ago, and was told by Mackenzie that filing a human rights complaint may be the only course of action. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, second-hand smoke kills 800 Canadians each year. The website smokefreehousingbc.ca, created by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon, states second-hand smoke contains higher concentrations of many of the toxins found in

Madison Paage often spends nights sleeping in her vehicle to avoid the second-hand smoke in her KinVillage apartment. cigarette smoke, increasing a non-smoker’s risk of developing heart disease and lung cancer, as well as causing acute respiratory problems. The way smoke moves throughout a building is unpredictable and it knows no boundaries, the website notes, adding a 2013 survey in B.C. found that half of those living in apartments and condos reported being exposed to unwanted second-hand smoke. Hugh Davies, Delta’s bylaw manager, said municipalities have legislation pertaining to public spaces but do not govern smoking in private residences, leaving stratas

or societies running subsidized housing to create and enforce their own rules. A spokesperson for B.C. Housing also noted it’s up to individual societies that operate buildings to come up with smoking policies. In B.C., strata corporations can adopt smokefree bylaws that affect individually-owned strata lots, however, the Heart and Stroke Foundation says its survey found that while 70 per cent of strata corporations receive complaints about second-hand smoke, only 25 per cent have a smoke-free bylaw. Even if a no-smoking rule is in effect, as is the case with KinVillage, nab-

bing someone who’s not allowed to be puffing can be difficult. KinVillage executive director Donna Ellis said unlike the other residential buildings at the complex that offer various levels of support, North Court is for completely independent living. Thus, staff aren’t in the building all the time to monitor residents that might be breaking the rule. “It can be very challenging. If she (Paage) or anyone was to call us and say somebody is smoking, we will go and walk down the halls and see if we can actually smell any smoke. Our staff can also go into her suite to see if we smell any smoke… we can go

into other people’s suites but typically we have to give 24 hours’ notice to go into somebody’s suite,” Ellis said. “It’s a bit tricky with just smelling for it because people can go outside and you can come back in and smell like smoke. If they’re heavy smokers, they’ll carry that with them and that can get into furniture.” Noting they are doing what they can to address Paage’s complaint, Ellis said if evidence is found that someone is smoking, a process that falls under the Residential Tenancy Branch must be followed whereby they are given three warning notices before eviction.

Riders determine route Increased revenues avert more cuts

CONTINUED from Page 1 The route will be determined by riders and will focus on medical appointments, shopping and social engagements. Civic politicians approved a one-year lease for a para-transit bus, with an option to purchase at the end of the lease. The 2016 financial plan includes $120,000

for the South Delta program. Delta has secured a $20,000 Age-Friendly Community Planning and Projects grant from the province to help initiate the program. The program will be managed out of McKee Seniors Recreation Centre “as soon as we can get this up and running,” Bishop said.

CONTINUED from Page 1 The board has managed to avert other cuts with a projected $338,500 increase in net revenue from the International Student Program and a $169,490 increase in Continuing Education revenue. It also plans to dip into reserves for another $775,000. The school district is

projecting an enrollment next year of about 15,300 students, up only one from 2015/16. After years of decline, the district’s enrollment has leveled off and the projection is for it to remain level for the next couple of years before moderate increases begin. In addition to creating specialty academy pro-

grams to attract out-of-district kids, the Delta district also enjoys a healthy dose of non-Deltans who come for regular schooling, including around 1,800 from Surrey. The public can provide input on the budget at a meeting at the district administration offices in Ladner on Tuesday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Hank Domestic Short Hair, Black with White, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 2 years old) Hank is what you would call a gentle giant. He came to us in a trap and unfortunately it was very easy to see that he had been living outside getting into fights. He had torn off some of his nails, his third eye lid was torn and he had numerous bite and scratch wounds all over his body. Now that Hank is on the mend we are getting to see more of his personality. He remains a very shy boy but has now shown that he loves positive attention and enjoys chin rubs. He is also a lover of Temptation cat treats! We have been bribing him with treats in order to socialize with him and get him out of his shell. He will even gently take them from your hand. Due to his shy demeanor and clear history of fighting we would like to find Hank a quiet, adult only home, where he can be kept indoors away from other cats. This handsome man is a tender soul and is looking for someone of similar personality to call his own.

The Delta Fire Department has undergone a bit of a changing of the guard. Deputy Chief Robin Cullen retired last January and deputy Chief Ken Sim followed suit last month, retiring after 36 years with the department. In their place, two new deputies — Brad Wilson and Guy McKintuck — have taken over. Inspired to go into firefighting by his older brother, Sim was hired by Delta in 1980. “He was a Surrey firefighter and four years later I became a Delta firefighter,” said Sim, who, at 22, was one of the youngest hired at the time as the

He became a deputy chief six years ago after 30 years with the department. “It was time to pass the torch to these guys,” he said. Wilson replaces Sim as deputy chief of operations, while McKintuck has taken over fire prevention. Both have been with the department for more than 20 years. The Kinsmen House, a fixture at the edge of Memorial Park for the last four decades, was turned to rubble this week as Reach’s new child development centre gets closer to reality.

Making way for the future Kin House demolished in favour of child development centre

This week’s demolition of the 40-year-old Kinsmen House is a dramatic announcement of something new coming to Ladner. Replacing the Kin House at the edge of Memorial Park will be a 21,000-square-foot building that will soon house both the LadnerTsawwassen Kinsmen Club and Reach Child and Youth Development Society. Construction on the child development centre is planned to begin this August with completion scheduled for a year later. Reach president

Donna Burke extended a huge thank you to the Kinsmen for embracing children and youth with special needs and partnering with Reach and the Corporation of Delta in the Building for Children Together project. The Kinsmen Club has been providing funding and support for community programs and groups in Delta since 1936. The Kinsmen House is just one of the construction projects the club has funded over the years, a list that includes the Ladner Pioneer Library and water park in Memorial Park. The club will con-

tinue to serve through this unique partnership that will bring programs and services to children with special needs and their families into the heart of the community. “We’re very proud to be part of this partnership and, along with other projects and partnerships, we continue to serve the community’s greatest need,” said club president Ian Sandham. This new location will, over time, double the number of families that Reach is able to support, including planned new prevocational and social programs for youth with

learning disabilities and autism. The community meeting room in the new building will be available to the public. With support from the Corporation of Delta, the corporate sector and other community organizations such as the Delta Agricultural Society, the Reach Foundation has raised $4 million of the $5 million required. For more information or to help, contact Reach fundraising manager Joni Wright at 604-946-6622 ext. 367 or visit www. reachdevelopment.org/ campaign.

he various planning efforts that have been undertaken here over the years, the ones that have resulted in orderly and enviable communities, have primarily concerned themselves with aesthetics, not economics. These have been exercises to determine what type of housing goes where and have led to a smattering of higher density in the town cores and single-family pretty much everywhere else. They’ve created family-friendly neighbourhoods, but as real estate prices have skyrocketed, Delta has become less and less friendly to the average family, to the point where we need to take a serious look at how we approach planning. In fact, we’re faced with the weighty decision of determining what type of community we want to live in. Do we adjust the housing mix to better accommodate families or do we keep it status quo and essentially tell people that unless you’ve got a million bucks in your pocket, you’re not welcome here? With the typical Ladner home now selling north of $900,000 and Tsawwassen homes going for a cool $1.1 million on average, that’s where we’re at. Past discussions over housing stock haven’t necessarily considered affordability, often working under the assumption that people sought smaller accommodation due to lifestyle choices. That’s still a deciding factor for some, including empty nesters, but there’s a growing segment of the population, a group that can only dream of owning a single-family home, that requires something different for financial reasons. Largely developed during the posttunnel building boom when pretty much anyone with a job could afford a home, Delta remains single-family centric today. We can keep it that way and price our adult children out of the market or we can adapt to accommodate the young families that once found this place so welcoming. We’re most definitely at a crossroads, faced with a choice between maintaining either the look or the character of our community. Increased density would allow more people to call this enviable place home, but it would most certainly alter the landscape. The choice isn’t easy, but in many ways it’s pretty simple: There’s a lot more to a community than just some buildings.

Perceived conflicts exist even if legislation says they don’t

T

he press has had several stories in recent days about politicians meeting at private functions. Those attending contribute up to $20,000 to attend. Because these meetings are private, no one knows if it is a conflict of interest. Canada has banned donations by corporations and has rules about how much can be “donated” by individuals. Limits exist in many provinces, but not Newfoundland, PEI, Yukon and B.C. In B.C., about $5 million was donated by corporations to the B.C. Liberals last year — about one-half of all the funds the party obtained. Some of this came from private dinners at a cost of $20,000 per plate. The premier wants to improve disclosure, but not the practice. For municipal elections, there are no tax deductions for individuals’ donations but otherwise no limits. It’s the “Wild West,” as our MLA described it. There are no public records of how much is raised and spent between elections — how many private dinners, free tickets, box seats, etc. — only what is spent during the election period. Can this be a big problem? About $300,000 was spent by those seeking office on Delta council in 2014, or about $3 for every man,

woman and child in Delta. That’s more than a federal election. The most expensive Delta campaign was run by the Delta Independent Voters Association on behalf of Mayor Lois Jackson and council candidates Robert Campbell, Ian Paton and Rod Binder. Considering Jackson was acclaimed, if you allocate the campaign expenses to the council candidates, they each spent $38,000. Campbell and Paton were both re-elected. As far as the other successful candidates go, Sylvia Bishop spent $45,000, Heather King spent $16,000 and each of Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos spent $15,000. The unsuccessful candidates all spent less. Looking just at corporate donations, all on council funded about two-thirds of their campaigns

by raising money from corporations, most of which are operating within Delta. Donations ranged up to $15,000. Bishop reported seven donations of $1,000 or more, King reported seven, McDonald and Kanakos collectively reported 16, and Campbell, Paton and Binder collectively reported 49 donations of $1,000 or more. The names of many donors are easily recognized – operators at Boundary Bay Airport, developers, operators of various businesses in Delta, etc. Is there a perceived conflict of interest if a business has made a contribution of say $1,000 or more to a councillor’s campaign and then comes before council with a request — is this a perceived conflict if a councillor receives the presentation and then votes in favour? One councillor berated me a while ago at a public hearing when I asked the conflict of interest question of the councillors whose largest contributor in their campaign was asking for 20 per cent increase in units in his major housing project. To whom are the councillors accountable? Is there a perceived conflict of interest despite being allowed under current B.C. rules? Ian Robertson is three-decade resident and was involved in Delta elections in the past.

Bridge won’t have big impact on ships

Editor: Much has been made lately of what’s behind the province’s decision to build a bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. In developing their plans, the government consulted with us at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority because as a federal port authority, we have navigational jurisdiction of the waterway and we are therefore required to ensure any structure above or below the water

does not impede current or future shipping. As a port authority, we do not decide what will be traded, but we have to imagine what could be. During the consultation, we provided recommendations for a bridge height that keeps important options open for facilitating Canada’s long-term trade on the Fraser River. This is what our federal mandate requires us to focus on. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is support-

ive of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project as it will improve goods movement along Highway 99, a critical Lower Mainland trade corridor. While replacing the tunnel with a bridge may allow for some increase in ship size for future trade — an environmental win because larger ships are generally more efficient — there will not be significant impact. The new bridge will be the same height above

the water as the existing Alex Fraser Bridge, so maximum vessel height will remain unchanged. Other impediments to larger ships are the shallower depth of the river at its mouth, the width of the river (which does not allow very large vessels to turn) and various underwater pipeline crossings, as well as the current George Massey Tunnel. Robin Silvester President and CEO Vancouver Fraser Port Authority

Tsawwassenite is grateful to have found a doctor Editor: I am a long-time resident of Tsawwassen, since 1982, where I have made my home with my husband, daughters, and now sons-in-law and grandchildren. We love this place. With great sadness, however, we have been among those who have

lost our doctor — through absolutely no fault of his. In fact we thank him for over 30 years of caring for our family through many stages of life. The complications, however, of not having a doctor have just begun to surface for us. In trying to get the results of a recent routine cancer screening

sent to me I was informed by the B.C. Cancer Agency that this was impossible without a doctor who would receive a copy first. I tried to explain that we have no doctor, but that didn’t help. Fortunately for me, Lisa Ghent, a practicing naturopathic physician in Ladner, was willing

to accept me and I am so grateful. Where most every doctor in this area is telling us they are unable to accept new patients, Ghent has been welcoming. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Medical peace of mind is worth its weight in gold. Vicki Bowker

Overturned garbage cans offer a sad commentary

Editor: Monday morning my wife and I drove up 8A Avenue towards English Bluff Road in Tsawwassen and to our surprise we found all garbage cans turned over obviously by some useless loser members of our society. There was garbage,

papers, leaves and bottles everywhere and residents were out trying to collect all this garbage for pick up by the weekly garbage collection. The world is in dire straits already in regards to the environment and entire nations are coming together to figure out how

to prevent a total collapse of our world as we know it as far as the environment is concerned. As a society we are obviously doing a lousy job as parents and educators to bring up people who think turning over garbage cans is a cool thing to do. Even if we could catch

these losers, nothing would happen to them anyway because our Canadian bleeding heart attitude always protects the criminals and punishes the victims. That is the reason for this situation in the first place. Othmar Brunner

More independents needed at all levels of government

Editor: Re: Ease our cynicism, Murphy’s Law, April 8 I have very little faith in these parties acting in our best interests regardless of where their finances come from. They are both too entrenched in their party ideology to run this prov-

ince properly. I have maintained for some time now that the only answer to getting responsive government is to elect independent MLAs in all or most ridings. If a member’s bill is good for most people or the economy, then it

will be passed by MLAs that are responsible to their voters and not some industry or labour organization. I also believe that people are really fed up with the status quo and want genuine change. In my humble opinion,

WEEKENDER OPORTO

There is something special growing behind Ladner United Church. When the church embarked on its plan to renovate and revitalize the century-old building, a community garden was included in the area between the church and the new townhouse development with the intention of opening it up to residents of the development as well as the community. Gardening has already started with the early warm weather this spring and there are still four plots available to residents in the community interested in exercising their green thumb. Organizer Jolene Prak said she will start a waiting list for next year if there is more demand for plots. “This garden site may seem to have popped up suddenly but its presence harkens back to earlier decades when its location

The garden includes some raised plots that are more accessible for those with mobility issues. The church really wanted to make it a place for residents to visit. The garden includes a walkway that leads to an expansive outdoor patio. There are numerous benches throughout the site from

which people can enjoy the surrounding garden. It is the second community garden in Ladner. The Ladner Community Garden Society opened its site, which includes more than 40 plots, at Kensington Park North in the spring of 2011. Anyone interested in adopting a garden plot at Ladner United Church for this year or next year can call Jolene at 604-9526040.

Registered professional counsellor Colleen Drobot will be speaking about Making Sense of Anxiety next month at Delta Christian School. Drobot, a family therapist and faculty member of the Neufeld Institute, will help make sense of the roots of anxiety and will suggest ways parents can help support their children who are experiencing anxiety. The institute’s mission is to “use developmental science to make sense of children to the adults

Colleen Drobot responsible for them,” its website notes. Drobot works with individuals, families, adolescents and school districts and has a private practice

in West Vancouver. She is also an educator with over 20 years of experience working with children in the classroom or special needs settings. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, May 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Delta Christian School, 4789-53rd St., Ladner. Tickets are $10 (plus a small processing fee). Preregistration is required by buying tickets online at http://bit.ly/1VRAJp4. For more information, email events@deltachristianschool.org.

Professor to talk stats with Probus Club The South Delta Probus Club will tackle statistics at this month’s meeting. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 20 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. This month’s speaker is Dr. Jim Zidek, professor emeritus at the University of B.C., who has a talent for presenting what’s often thought of as a boring subject in a humorous and

interesting way. Zidek, who received his PhD in statistics from Stanford University, has an interest in the foundations of environ metrics, notably on the design of environmental monitoring networks and spatio-temporal modeling of environmental processes. His contributions to statistics have been recognized with a number

of awards, including fellowships of the ASA and IMS, the Gold Medal of the Statistical Society of Canada and fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada, one of the country’s highest honours for a scientist. Probus is a worldwide fellowship club for retired and semi-retired professional and business people.

Spring Awakening raises more than $3,300 for mental health

The Urban Rack was once again the hottest ticket in town as it hosted another “sold out” Spring Awakening Fashion Show and Charity Event last Thursday evening. The ladies of South Delta came together at the Trenant Park Square store for a fun and inspirational evening in support of the Canadian Mental Health Association’s South Delta

chapter. This year’s benefitting charity was a very personal choice for the staff at The Urban Rack as one of their own suffered a devastating loss this past year when her sister could no longer cope with the brutal challenges associated with postpartum depression. By sharing her sister’s story Alana Brookes hopes it will spark and continue

the conversation around mental health. Thanks to the coveted charity bags with items donated from suppliers, The Urban Rack and local businesses, the evening raised $3,355, which will directly support people struggling with mental illness in the community. The donation was dedicated to the beautiful Sara O’Brien.

Delta Secondary students will hit the stage with the Great Hollywood Musical Disaster this month.

DSS drama goes Hollywood Ladner high school presents ‘hilarious’ disaster comedy starting next week DAVE WILLIS

he Great Hollywood Musical Disaster is coming to Delta Secondary as the Ladner high school’s drama department is set to stage the comedy beginning next week. The play is “hilarious,” says teacher and artistic director Rebecca Salton, adding students involved in the production love what they’re doing. “All of the cast and crew are very committed and it shows,” she says.

The comedy takes place in Hollywood in the 1970s, Salton explains, noting the script is fast moving, funny and has characters that are over the top. It centres around a producer whose career hasn’t gone very well lately and decides his next film will star all of the cliché, stereotype stars of Hollywood. Examples include a cowboy, an action star, a beautiful blonde bombshell, the boy next door and a comedian. The producer writes each of them a different script, leaving each one to think they’re in the starring role. When they find

out they’re not the actual star, chaos ensues and that’s when the fun begins, Salton says.

All of the cast and crew are very committed and it shows. REBECCA SALTON

The play won’t be staged in Genesis Theatre this year due to the seismic upgrading work

underway. It’s been a challenge but has also provided opportunities to use technology in ways they haven’t done before, she says, giving examples like shadow puppets and projections. A new lighting system has been set up and a stage has also been built. The comedy will take place in the school’s guitar room (Room 1106). “We’re dubbing it the Performance Studio for this play,” Salton says. The costumes are amazing and the set is incredible for the production, she notes. “We’re lucky with our

costume department, we had stuff stored for a very long time,” she says. “We have a lot of vintage 1970s costumes.” Kathie Morrison is the technical director. The play is set to run April 21 and 22 and then again April 26 to 30. All performances are at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale in the school’s foyer at lunch and after school. Tickets cost $14 in advance or $16 at the door. For more information, or to have tickets put on will call, email boxoffice2016dssdrama@gmail. com.

Top vitamin and supplement recommendations

Well on Your Way

I

P.J. WREN

n a perfect world we would consume all of the needed nutrients for good health through diet alone. However, this is far from a perfect world. Our diets are not nourishing us like they should be due to a number of reasons. First, most of us don’t eat “clean” 100 per cent of the time. We don’t always eat the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and we have been known, on occasion, to eat from a box instead of a home-cooked meal. Second, the foods today do not possess the same nutrients they used to (due to poor soil quality and

GMOs). And third, we are not getting the variety of foods, on a daily basis, we should to cover the gamut of nutrients we need to function our best. All of these leave gaps in our diet that need to be filled by vitamins and supplements. This does not, however, give you free rein to eat what you want because you can supplement good health. You will always get more from a vegetable and a piece of fruit than you will from a pill. To find out the best vitamins and supplements most people should be taking on a regular basis, I consulted with Halina Kwiatkowska, owner and operator of Ladner’s sweetest little health store, Parsley, Sage and Thyme. For all ages Kwiatkowska recommends a good multi-vitamin, a probiotic and an omega-3. (Please note: these are general recommendations. For a more detailed and specific recommendation for you and your health, visit Parsley, Sage and Thyme in Ladner.)

She explains that a mul- foods a lot of us eat on tivitamin is a “foundation- a regular basis, though, al supplement” containing which is understandable why they are a recomvitamins and minerals mended supplement. These are not

pentaenoic acid) to DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). In addition, talk to your physician before adding them as a supplement to your diet, as they can interact with some medications. As we get older, into our 40s and 50s, Kwiatkowska recommends adding an adrenal support supplement, vitamin D3 and magnesium to our daily diet. Adrenal support is particularly important for women in their peri and menopausal years, as well as anyone who has high levels of the stress hormone cortisol floating through their blood on a daily basis. How do you know if that’s you? Some classic signs of adrenal exhaustion are: fatigue, depressed mood, irritability, unable to drag yourself out of bed, yet in the evening you can’t fall asleep. Other signs of adrenal exhaustion are brain fog and poor memory, and if you rely on sugary snacks and caffeine to get you through the day. If that’s you, you need

to start taking care of your adrenal glands and begin making some lifestyle choices that will lower your cortisol levels. Vitamin D3 is important because it is involved in regulating the levels of the minerals calcium and phosphorus. It also boosts our immune system and is used for conditions of the heart and blood vessels, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Magnesium is an important supplement as we age as it is needed to help combat diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma and osteoporosis, to name a few. Magnesium will also help curb anxiety and panic attacks, relieve insomnia and reduce muscle cramping (important if you are active). In the end, though, it’s important to eat real food, supplement when you need to and live an active and healthy life — no matter what age you are. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer. Swirl, sniff and sip at Galiano wine fest KAROLINE CULLEN

I

Optimist contributor

gnoring the crowd around me, I study the pink blush of the rosé in my glass. I swirl. I sniff. I sip. Elegant, with hints of fresh, small fruits. According to wine tasting protocol, I should spit this mouthful into the bucket provided. But not this time; it is too tasty. I swallow my sip and put a check mark by the wine’s name in my tasting booklet. So begins my adventure at the Galiano Wine and Beer Tasting Festival. Islanders and visitors alike have come to sip, savour and sample wines, craft beers and ciders. Galiano Island, one of the Gulf Islands off the coast of the Lower Mainland, is a 45-minute ferry ride from Tsawwassen. For over 20 years, this outdoor festival has been the main fundraiser for the Galiano Health Care Society. Upon entry, I am given two glasses: a wine glass, etched with the festival’s

splashing otter mascot, and a beer tasting glass. I am not a beer aficionado so the small glass will not get used. Kim, my wine tasting pal, and I take a stroll past the booths. We debate our strategy with friends. Some are searching for the best wines below a certain price point. Others are tasting ones high above what they normally pay for a bottle. Others are tasting only reds, some only bubbly. We aim to discover a new favourite for a summer sipper. One of the wine representatives expounds on how much he enjoys this unpretentious event as he pours Kim an extra-large tasting portion. Many of the wines he and the other merchants showcase today are available at stores on the island. So if we do find a favourite, we will likely be able to buy some before sailing home. An army of volunteers is busy preparing and serving trays of finger foods. Over the years, the reputation for the festival’s food has grown. Platters

of homemade sushi are emptied in short order; the server does not get far from the kitchen. In between the tasting and munching, we browse the silent auction items. What to bid on? A band keeps the vibe up and people in the shade tents are tapping their toes. Wine recommendations are exchanged with others waiting in line for samples. One couple makes this festival the highlight of their annual weekend visit. “We love the casual atmosphere and tasting wines outdoors,” they comment as they point out their favourites marked in their notes. Then they ask, between swirls, sniffs, and sips, “We’ve hiked Bodega Ridge and Montague Provincial Park. Where else should we visit?” I pause to swallow a mouthful of a particularly tasty Italian frizzante and start on my list of Galiano favourites. Looking from The Bluffs Park at ferries in Active Pass and over lushly treed islands receding into a distant mist like a Toni Onley painting is always a

Wine and food make the perfect pairing at the Galiano Wine and Beer Tasting Festival. pleasure. More gratifying still are the expansive vistas at the end of the more rigorous uphill trail on Mount Galiano. Bellhouse Park offers a gentle slope to the shoreline and is a fine spot, should it be a lucky summer’s day, to watch orcas swim by. The sculpted sandstone rocks along one side of Bellhouse and at Retreat Cove are a gallery of undulating shapes,

openings and patterns. Morning Beach is more sheltered and suitable for swimming and a steep hike down through the forest to Mathews Point brings you to a pebble and sand beach on Active Pass. I could go on but the line has moved. The smiling wine rep pours a taste and explains the mix of grapes in the vintage. As I hold the glass up to the light and swirl, I ponder

whether this will be a “sip and spit” or a “sip and swallow?” The 2016 edition of the Galiano Wine and Beer Tasting Festival is set for Aug. 6. For more information, visit galianowinefestival.com. The best BC parks to explore this spring

BC boasts more than 1,000 provincial parks and protected areas – from public beaches, rare ecosystems and endangered wildlife habitats to unique geography and priceless First Nations heritage. Whether you’re planning a day out with the kids, a photo safari or epic expedition, here’s a short list of parks worth visiting.

BRING THE FAMILY Vancouver Island offers a wonderland of lush forests, ocean shores, seaside towns and adventure-ready parks. A great choice for families is Englishman River Falls Provincial Park near Parksville, where a stroll

through silent forests ends at two thundering waterfalls. Nearby provincial parks include Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park, renowned for its long sandcastlefriendly beach, and MacMillan Provincial Park, where Cathedral Grove’s massive old-growth Douglas firs loom above the forest floor. For star gazing and wienie roasts, hop a ferry to Salt Spring Island’s Ruckle Provincial Park. The seaside sites are walk-in, but that’s part of the fun: wheelbarrow your gear a few minutes from the parking lot and you have spectacular ocean views, easy hiking trails and kilometres of beachcombing without a car in sight. Ruckle Park is set on a century-old homestead and is still part working farm.

WATCH FOR WILDLIFE Imagine watching mountain goats and big horn sheep scampering along narrow alpine ledges, or spotting

elk feeding by a forest pool, or seeing huge flocks of migratory birds returning to vibrant wetlands. Thompson Okanagan is best known for its vineyard-studded hills and abundant orchards, but its lakeside bluffs, pine forests, grasslands and desert landscapes are favoured habitats for everything from deer and black bears to muskrats, beavers and birdlife. Vaseux Lake Provincial Park, set on a lakeshore between Penticton and Oliver, is renowned for its wildlife. Besides agile mountain goats and big horn sheep, Vaseux protects a variety of endangered species, including badgers, bats and night snakes. Trails lead to neighbouring Vaseux Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Or head east to the parks of BC’s Kootenay Rockies region. Set among the lakes and snow peaks, Kikomun Creek Provincial Park is home to a wealth of wildlife, including herons,

DESTINATION BC/ANDREW STRAIN

Spring is a great time for a BC adventure, especially with a faltering loonie making travel south of the border so costly. But you’ll have some tough choices. There’s still plenty of skiing and snowboarding, but it’s also time to hit the hiking trails, launch the boat and break out the camping gear.

Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park

elk and one of BC’s largest populations of endangered western painted turtles.

DIP THE PADDLE Desolation Sound is a magical destination for boaters, kayakers and scuba divers. Two ferry rides north of Vancouver, this island-dotted sound is lapped with clear, warm waters, peppered with snug coves and backed by towering snow peaks. Desolation Sound is home to five parks, all with sheltered shorelines, and one of the best ways to see them is by kayak. For a very different paddling experience, head east to the Cariboo Chilcotin. This vast landscape of ancient

forests, lakes and mountain ranges is the setting for the legendary Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit, a multi-day expedition that follows a series of lakes, streams, rivers and portages in Bowron Lake Provincial Park. The area abounds with moose, bear, beavers, otters and birdlife.

SEEK OUT NORTHERN TREASURES Prefer to relax in a spa-like pool, surrounded by orchids and wandering moose? Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park is three hours north of Fort Nelson. Set deep in BC’s northern boreal spruce forest, the hot springs, one of Canada’s largest, creates a micro-

climate warm enough to support such tropical flora as yellow monkey flowers, ostrich ferns and orchids. A boardwalk passes through the forest and a warm water swamp, leading to an openair pool where temperatures stay a toasty 42-52°C year round. More unique geology is on hand further west at Anhluut’ukwsim Laxmihl Angwinga’asanskwhl Nisga’a. Also known as Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, this spot, north of Terrace, is the site of a massive volcanic eruption that created an almost lunar landscape about 250 years ago. Welcomes You

I know, great song, but that’s not what I want to talk about. Most of us don’t spend much time consciously thinking about eternity. Probably because you have to die to get there, and who wants to think about death? But since it is one of the few inevitable things in life, shouldn’t we be thinking (at least a little) about eternity? There’s an interesting verse in the Bible that says God has planted eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Whatever else that means, I believe that it at least is saying that somewhere inside each of us is the realization that there is more to life than the here and now.

Minister’s Minute

MIKE MAWHORTER Ladner Baptist Church

Even if we claim that death is the end, there is something deep inside us that knows better. Perhaps this helps explain the soul restlessness that we try to fill in so many ineffective or hurtful ways. Thinkers throughout history have tried to

understand this. Blaise Pascal wrote in the 1600s: “What else does this craving, and this helplessness, proclaim but that there was once in man a true happiness, of which all that now remains is the empty print and trace? This he tries in vain to fill with everything around him... though none can help, since this infinite abyss can be filled only with an infinite and immutable object; in other words by God himself.” Pensées VII(425) That quote has evolved into a common phrase that there is a God-shaped hole in everyone. Isn’t it time you were thinking about eternity? Contact Mike at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Horsing Around in Delta Horse and Humans: A Special Bond for all Ages! By Candice Miller of Pony Pals Riding Stables

It’s a magical thing, that bond that occurs between a child and their horse, something which words cannot describe effectively, but you can recognize immediately. It becomes a core part of the child’s identity, an amazing connection, a piece of completion found through an unusual best friend - a large, loving kind equine. Quietly whispered words of love into a fuzzy perked ear, arms wrapped around the heavily muscled neck, and the look in the horses eyes that says “I love you, I understand you, and I totally accept you as you are.” There is an accepted truth amongst even the smallest children of three who come out to our stables for their weekly ride: their pony love them the best, that he is the best pony in the world, and that he would prefer to sleep at the foot of his rider’s bed!” It’s not quite enough to ride a pony, and not even to own a pony, but it might even be best to BE a pony! Many little girls and boys can be seen cantering around their house, RIDING LESSONS FOR ALL AGES & ABILITIES practicing jumping over furniture scattered throughout the living room. Riding day is always the highlight of the week, LOCATIONS IN with the clothes often laid out the night before.

COME LEARN TO RIDE

As they grow up into an age of school stresses, and greater awareness, into the world of structure and expectations, riding takes on a different meaning: the child arrives at the barn and immediately begins to relax and refocus, a whiskery kiss and a shaggy hug makes manageable the problems of the school day. Confidence is rebuilt, and the child feels accepted in the stables welcoming community: after the ride, the knowledge they have a place where they are always successful carries them forward to the next week. In the teen years, the need to have the equine bond intensifies. In a tumultuous time of their life, teens look to their horse for strength, unquestioning acceptance and support, quietude and stability. The horse and their barn friends become a “constant” in their life, a place where they can be guaranteed success through dedication, learn responsibility, and be thoroughly gratified by the experience. The huge amount of respect, adoration, admiration, responsibility and commitment required to create and maintain this attachment is intense, and is an important life skill. The only thing greater is what the horse gives back to the rider: self-confidence, security, unconditional love, joy of life, inner peace and a sense of self-worth. To know that no matter what happens, there is someone who loves them, needs them and will always be there for them, no matter what the outside circumstances of life bring. The horses only expectation is to be treated fairly, be loved in return, and an occasional carrot! As an adult, riding takes on an entirely different meaning: it’s a time where the rider can just relax, focus on their own goals, and put all the problems of family, work and stress away. The barn is a sanctuary for the entire family, an emotional safety zone, and a place where dreams really can come true. A place where all those who share this passion for horses can congregate with the same mutual need: To be with their horse, because they’ve been dreaming of him all day! Pony Pals offers riding lessons for all ages and abilities, and for entire families to come and ride together. We are currently offering a special promotion to new riders to our stables. Book a Get Started Program or an Evaluation Lesson! We are also booking our children’s summer camps, which are an amazing introduction to the Love of Horses! Acclimatize Your Skin Before Summer And “Hot Place” Holidays. Let Us Get Real. The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun or bulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There is no magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uv light. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? - just asking! See www.tanresponsibly.ca for a complete set of standards. Our staff have been trained extensively in North American standards. Our clients tell us a “base tan” before their holidays and summer works for them. Is this “No U.V. light message the same as : Don’t use salt! To quickly be replaced by “oh a little salt is o.k.” or don’t use butter to be replaced later by “oh a little butter is good for you” or red wine is bad to soon be replaced by “a little red wine is good for our digestion.” Or “Don’t eat red meat or too much fat” to be replaced by, “We should be eating more fat and red meat.” How long do we have to wait before we are told oh! By the way we do need U.V. light in healthy moderate doses? With all these second thoughts are we finally getting real? Are we being lead by the nose? - still

just asking!

Look at these outdoor Burners, they probably lost the fun of their next 3 days of vacation they did not sleep easy for a few nights.

OW! No Base Tan!

The Delta Ice Hawks likely won’t be returning to the Ladner Leisure Centre for their 20th season. The Delta parks and recreation commission has reccomended the junior “B” hockey club not have its ice allocation renewed for the 2016-17 campaign. While the Ice Hawks’ contract is on a seasonto-season basis, there is a three-year allocation for main user groups — namely youth-oriented sports —which recently expired. Submissions for ice time over the next three years was requested back in January and the consensus was more is needed. The commission was presented options at last month’s meeting from parks, recreation and culture director Ken Kuntz to deal with the different challenges of ice allocations. Among them was Delta not renewing its contract with the Ice Hawks which was fully endorsed. “There is always pressure for more ice time from everyone,” explained Delta councillor and parks and recreation commission chair Robert Campbell. “If we follow our policy fee and charges bylaw it’s youth comes first. Unfortunately, junior ‘B’ hockey is near the bottom of the barrel.” Campbell added the three-year ice allocation is only in the recommendation stage and the entire process could take a while before a final report is drafted and presented to council. “It could take several weeks to sort everything out before final approval,” explained Todd

Delta Ice Hawks could be leaving Ladner after learning their ice time agreement likely won’t be renewed. Stewardson, Delta’s deputy director of parks, recreation and culture. “When it comes to ice allocation, there is always lot of integral moving parts. We still need all the staff reports. There is no definite conclusion to this.” In the meantime, Ice Hawks owner Wes Mussio is stunned by this potential decision. He purchased the team last fall and was asked to meet with parks and recreation staff soon after to discuss the current partnership. He made it known he wanted the club more active in the community including ticket giveaways to minor hockey players, figure skaters, students

and seniors. He followed through with the promise, including playoff games. He received approval to renovate the Ice Hawks dressing room area, entirely funded by the team. He also checked into the possibility of having a beer garden and advertising in the arena. The beer garden idea was mentioned at the parks and rec commission meeting, as was the special hourly ice rate ($135) the team receives. “We made a number of inquiries about what could and could not be done,” said Mussio, a Vancouver lawyer. “After the meeting, it was our clear impression that the director wasn’t really interested in any

of our proposals and we never went ahead with anything. We did ask if we could have a special event beer garden to which the director said we can make a proposal to council. That idea ended right there.” What also has Mussio perplexed is the lack of communication. He only learned of the commission’s recommendation after being contacted by the Optimist on Tuesday. He too was asked to submit his ice allocation request in January and actually suggested the club likely won’t need the two late evening 75-minute practice slots and would consider playing some games at Sungod Arena in

North Delta. “That’s the funny thing. We were actually asking for less ice time,” said Mussio. “The guys were complaining about the late practice time and we were going to buy time at the Great Pacific Forum. Adding the league is in an “uproar” right now over this development, Mussio says he might not wait for Delta’s final decision. He already has three cities that are “very interested” in hosting the team. The Ice Hawks were founded back in 1996. Alumni players include NHL stars Brent Seabrook and Milan Lucic. They have won a pair of titles during that span.

The Vancouver All-Stars South came up with some big time performances at the recent Sea to Sky Championships at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre. The international cheerleading competition featured thousands of athletes from across North America. The Tsawwassen based club sent five teams and they more than held their own. Leading the way were the All-Stars’ Tiny and Junior #1 teams being crowned national champions in their respective divisions. The Tiny squad, for ages 3-to-6, topped the podium in its five team division, while the Juniors did the same in its five team group. Right behind was the All-Stars Junior #2 team earning runner-up hon-

ours. The club also had entries in the Youth (7-to-11-years-old) and Senior (14-to18) Divisions, earning sixth and fifth place finishes respectively in the highly competitive groups that featured nine teams in each. The girls train hard all year for competitions like this. Every routine is scored based on their level of difficulty, their technique, and creativity. The goal for each and every team is a zero deduction routine which means no mistakes or falls. In this competition, four of the five All-Star South teams performed zero deduction routines. OBITUARIES

EDELMEIER, Margaret Theresa April 16, 1927 to April 6, 2016

THOMPSON, Eileen Mary December 15, 1923 - April 9, 2016

Margaret left us peacefully, having lived a life filled with her beloved family, many wonderful friends, her flower-filled garden, and a love of music. She leaves behind her sister (Rathner) and family in Austria; her three children Wolfgang, Helen (Nell) and Andy; their spouses Morgan and Heather; and grandchildren Lauren, Max, Rachel and Kyla, as well as great-granddaughter Vivian and special daughter Shea. She is pre-deceased by her brother Hans, her husband Pio, and later, her longtime companion Franz Lindner. Margaret (Gretel Wimmer) was born in Weis, Austria and lived through the War, later working as a teacher in an alpine village. After the war, Pio, Margaret and young Wolf moved to Vancouver, where Helen and Andy were born. She retained her Austrian culture through her large network of friends and neighbors in the Lower Mainland, spending the last twentyfive years in Tsawwassen. Margaret always put her family first and foremost; she travelled extensively to visit them and also explored the world widely with a quest and love for new friends and places. With special gifts of humour and kindness, and an inspiring, positive Weltanshauung, she touched many different people from all walks of life. She sparkled in social settings and loved to bake and entertain for all her loved ones. She loved life. She is missed and will always be first in our hearts. There will be a celebration of her life on Monday, April 25th from 1:30 to 4:00 at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner are suggested.

With sadness we announce the passing of Eileen Mary Thompson, peacefully in her 92nd year. Predeceased by husband Chris in 2002; survived by son Tim (Carol), daughter Suzanne Fryeskul (Jim); granddaughters Kelley McNamara (Mike); Sheri Adamson (Paul) and her proudest achievement, great-grandchildren Lauren, Keefe, Millen, Blane, Hazel. Devoted family supporter, fiercely loyal, engaging, well read, vibrant, bearer of well-formed opinions, always guided by her Faith. A civilian clerk in Britain’s war effort, came to Canada as a war bride with new husband Christopher, a match that went the distance. Special thanks to the care staff at The Waterford. Memorial service at St. David’s Anglican church, Tsawwassen, April 22, 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Delta Hospital Foundation greatly appreciated.
