DTA president tells trustees of challenges faced by both teachers and students SANDOR GYARMATI

Many teachers believe the Delta board of education is putting dollars over human values. That was part of a strongly worded characterization Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer conveyed in his presentation to trustees Tuesday during the board’s public input meeting on the proposed operating budget. The board is looking at another round of cuts to help offset a $3.38 million operating deficit, including, among other items, reducing secondary supervision assistants and removing secondary library technicians. Some of the other reductions include potentially reducing six full-time special education assistants, unless enough extra funding comes through, and reducing the allocation of

The board will discuss the budget at a public meeting next Tuesday.

Pipe band once again shares stage with McCartney It was an encore to remember as the Delta Police Pipe Band once again shared the stage with a music legend. In 2012, the band played with Sir Paul McCartney before 50,000 people at B.C. Place. The pipes and drums accompanied McCartney when he sang Mull of Kintyre and a video of the performance has received almost 700,000 hits on YouTube. McCartney returned to Vancouver for two shows this week at Rogers Arena. Despite numerous applications from other Lower Mainland pipe bands to take part in the shows, the Delta Police Pipe Band was again his band of choice to play Mull of Kintyre in front of 17,000

Tsawwassen homeowner Inger Kam admits she was tempted to call the number on the flyer but then had reservations when she saw the news. Kam is like many homeowners getting a plethora of unsolicited flyers from eager real estate agents, some showing tempting examples of recent sales. What drew her concern after looking over the bright blue flyer of New Coast Realty were news reports that the Real Estate Council of B.C recently imposed strict conditions on the firm following revelations of potentially questionable practices. “I thought it was interesting and a lot of senior citizens who own houses here are sort of sitting on the teeter-totter wondering should they sell. I’m one of them but like keeping up on stuff, but others might not be aware of all the stuff that’s happening,” said Kam. An audio recording of a training session by company owner Ze Yu Wu, who is not licensed as a realtor, appeared to show agents being told how to get sellers to make quick sales at lower-than-market prices. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver is looking into the allegations and whether it needs to investigate the company

Information obtained as to a possible suspect. • April 17, 2:02 a.m., River Road and Highway 99: During a roadblock on the off-ramp from the highway a vehicle suddenly pulled to the side of the road in an apparent attempt to avoid the roadblock. Police approached the vehicle and an odour of alcohol was immediately apparent. As the suspect was having difficulty responding to the officer’s commands, a breath sample was requested. Two breath samples provide both read “fail” and as a consequence the suspect was given a 90-day driving prohibition and a 30-day vehicle impound. Three new mobile weigh stations in Delta

Delta is home to three of eight new mobile weigh stations recently completed throughout the Lower Mainland. The $2.3 million project is part of a new enforcement strategy for the province’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Enforcement Unit. The mobile scales are strategically located to target would-be violators and

officers will rotate between various sites to maximize the chances of catching violators. The three Delta stations are located at Highway 99 and Ladner Trunk Road south, northbound Highway 91 north of Highway 10, and Highway 99 and the Ladner Trunk Road westbound on-ramp. The sites are all pull-out

areas on highways with a wide shoulder, giving officers a safe place to inspect and weigh commercial vehicles. “The new weigh scales in Delta and in the Lower Mainland will make sure that commercial vehicles are checked and inspected appropriately,” said Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton.

Guitar Marty kept rockin’ to the end Local music scene loses a valuable teacher and mentor with the passing of Marty Hatlelid

South Delta has lost an integral part of its music scene. Marty Hatlelid, also known as Guitar Marty, passed away April 10 at his home in Ladner, just one year after being diagnosed with ALS. The community rallied around Hatlelid and his family following the diagnosis and last October a fundraiser, Party for Marty, rocked the Ladner Community Centre with live bands and a silent auction. The funds went toward making ground floor living a reality for his family so they wouldn’t have to leave their home of almost 17 years. Hatlelid and his family have had a long-standing connection with Ladner and South Delta. His wife, Alison Acheson, grew up in Tsawwassen, and their sons have attended school, played sports and worked at local businesses. Most in the community knew Hatlelid as Guitar Marty, a long-time music teacher who leaves a legacy of young and growing musicians.

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Marty Hatlelid and Alison Acheson with sons Cleve, Ole and Emmett Hatlelid. This past November saw his 10th annual Rock School Concert at Ladner Community Centre, where eight bands of young people, including his youngest son, performed. He offered his Rock School every summer to teach aspiring musicians the finer points of playing in a rock band. Hatlelid also spent

time teaching in the Delta high schools’ alternative programs. Teacher Trish Duggan said he “had a special gift” and “made the students feel valued and appreciated.” While many illnesses necessitate lengthy hospital stays, people with ALS can generally remain at home with care.

Dr. David Kason and public health nurse Cathy Kirk, occupational therapist Mary-Ann Fulks, physiotherapist Joy Gibson, hospice volunteer Tama Recker and care-aid Daryle Sherman, as well as other local health practitioners, became constants in the family’s life once home visits were the only

option. Throughout the past months, family, friends, and neighbours continued to support the family with food, housecleaning and all sorts of offerings. Diane Askin of Netclimbers, the Ladner web-design company, and a former president of the Ladner Business

Association, introduced Hatlelid to the LBA. This resulted in many community connections. “Marty loved people and always had a genuine interest in getting to know each person he connected with,” said Askin. Hatlelid was also an enthusiastic member of Beach Grove Golf Club. It didn’t take him long to know every member and create nicknames for all. Andy Girling, fellow club member and Hatlelid’s first golf teacher, said it was Beach Grove Golf Club’s honour to have Hatlelid as a member. “Marty was everyone’s friend.” One of his contributions to the golf scene was an annual New Year’s Day tournament, no matter the weather, that’s now in its 21st year. “Marty is and was a golf legend in his own right,” said Girling. A Tribute to Marty will be held at South Delta Baptist Church on Friday, April 29. The service will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a reception to follow.

t’s truly a shame that Vicki Huntington’s common sense campaign hasn’t gained any traction in Victoria. Over the past few weeks the second-term independent MLA from Delta South has put forward a number of measures that would, by most people’s accounts, improve the way government operates. Not bound by the constraints of party discipline, Huntington is free to bring forth any proposal she sees fit and these ones have no agenda other than to make government more efficient and accountable. With absolutely no disrespect intended, they are pretty straightforward initiatives, ones that are often in place in other jurisdictions, which makes the underwhelming reception our MLA has received all the more curious. She introduced, yet again, a bill that would ban corporate and union donations from provincial and municipal election campaigns and also reintroduced a bill that would move the province’s fixed election date to the fall to allow time to scrutinize that year’s budget. Just last week she called on the government to put an end to the use of public money for ads that contain political party messaging. They’re all non-partisan, common sense suggestions, so naturally they’ve been ignored. That’s too bad because Huntington’s efforts would help combat the distrust and cynicism the average person has for politics these days. One of the big knocks on the way government operates is that it’s beholden to certain interests and often ignores the little guy when making decisions. Doing away with corporate and union donations would go a long way to leveling that playing field, ensuring politicians don’t just view the public’s voice as some sort of annoyance. Eliminating the use of public money on partisan advertising seems like another no-brainer. There’s a lot of junk on TV these days but there’s little out there that’s as irritating as the government using our own money to tell us what a great job it’s doing. I think the average person, regardless of political stripe, would see the value in Huntington’s proposals, yet her colleagues in Victoria are in no hurry to take action on them. That’s a shame. It’s also an indictment of our current political system.

Intergenerational equity may finally spark youth to action

appy Earth Day everyone! Started in the United States in 1970, Earth Day is one of the longest running environmental awareness initiatives in the world. Born from a troubling time in the United States during the Vietnam War and concerns around air pollution and the terrible oil spill in Santa Barbara, the first Earth Day saw 20 million Americans take to the streets to rally for a healthy environment. On the EarthDay.org website, the group notes this year political leaders from around the world will gather in New York to sign the Paris Climate Agreement. There are five countries that have committed and they are definitely from around the world. They are Fiji, the Czech Republic, Argentina, Tuvalu and Singapore. I didn’t even know there was a Tuvalu, but then again, I haven’t taken a geography course in quite some time. Turns out Tuvalu is a group of nine small islands in the middle of the South Pacific. The highest point of land is 4.5 metres and there is no doubt the 11,000 inhabitants would be a tad nervous about sea level rise so good on their leaders for committing to the agreement. Where are the majority of the western industrialized nations and where are the leaders of the large emerging economies of China and India? As always, there is a lack of

political will to accomplish what would appear to be the near impossible. I was again invited to attend a student led conference at Seaquam Secondary last Friday. I talked about growing fruits and veggies on school farms and teaching young children about local food and enjoying the financial and health benefits of engaging in its production. The keynote speaker for the Green Symposium was Dr. Andrew Weaver, the Green Party MLA for Oak Bay/Gordon Head. Dr. Weaver has authored or coauthored hundreds of papers on global warming and gave a thorough presentation outlining the history and science of its study, including his involvement with the IPCC. What I took away from the presentation was there are opportunities for our youth to become involved with new economies in a changing world. Rather than try to remedy damage done, which

is close to impossible, he suggests for business to recognize the potential to embrace a new reality. Young people should attempt to capitalize on new industries and they should exercise their potential political clout and rally around leaders who act. Despite good intentions, Kyoto, Copenhagen and now Paris have failed to break through with anything remarkably promising. Weaver sums it up very well on his website, andrewweavermla.ca, when he says: “Whether or not society chooses to take the necessary steps to mitigate climate change ultimately depends on the extent to which we value the importance of intergenerational equity “What is clear from our scientific understanding of global warming is that the decisions being made today will have profound consequences for generations to come; yet future generations are not part of today’s decision making and today’s decision makers won’t have to live the consequences of the decisions they make.” Intergenerational equity may be the notion that sparks some emotion in what has traditionally been an apathetic political youth. Earth Days of the future could certainly benefit from that. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. There are many benefits from hosting a junior hockey team

Editor: Re: Ice Hawks leaving Ladner?, April 15 I am very saddened to learn the Corporation of Delta is seriously considering making it impossible to accommodate the ice time needs of a Junior “B” team that has been in our midst since before I moved here from Vancouver in 1995. Our community has witnessed countless young men of character mature from nervous, gangling and hopeful teenagers to confident, contributing and determined young men. They have adopted Ladner as their hockey home and gone on to play for teams like Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Harvard and for Canada at the Junior “A” Challenge (just this year). They have played for many B.C. Hockey League, Western Hockey League

and NCAA teams. Two of them have starred in the NHL and raised the Stanley Cup. I remember so well, in my brief time as the PR executive member for SDMHA, introducing Brent Seabrook to drop the puck at a ceremonial faceoff after his World Junior experience. But these memories are eclipsed for me by some more personal ones. Firstly, as the head of a hockey program that has continuously played high school hockey in B.C. for 46 years, I have proudly watched several of our students pull on Ice Hawks’ jerseys during my 23 years. Secondly, the Ice Hawks helped motivate my own son throughout his minor hockey career here. He was so proud to pull on an Ice Hawks’ jersey for an exhibition game in his final year with the SDMHA Midget AAA team, and

he was grateful for the opportunity to be an affiliate player throughout that season. He went on the play three years of junior hockey, two years of university hockey in the BCIHL, pro in the Swedish Second Division and, so far, one season in the Alberta University Athletics Conference. While his passion for the game drives him, I believe the presence of a Junior “B” team in our community was a huge motivation for him. I completely understand that amateur, local user groups should get priority for our publicly funded facilities, and I know some people believe a Junior “B” team doesn’t really serve the community because all the players do not come from South Delta. However, I can attest firsthand, as an educator and a father, there

are so many intangibles at play in the development of young men. Having role models and opportunities inspires them. Should the Ice Hawks leave South Delta, there will only be one manageable Junior “B” option for kids from Vancouver, Richmond, Delta and South Surrey. I would urge the Corporation of Delta to work assiduously with the Ice Hawks to find a solution to keep this team here for many years. I know I can measure the effects of this team on my many students and on my son, but it doesn’t show up on scheduling spreadsheets or Corporation of Delta staff meeting agendas. Be rest assured, the team provides a real, achievable next step goal to many aspiring young hockey players. Luke Fredeman

No new debt policy leaves amenities lacking

Editor: It’s not surprising that below my letter to the editor last week regarding Delta council’s rezoning of one of Delta’s rare recreational spaces was a letter complaining that the Ladner Pioneer Library was being used as a children’s play area. Delta’s libraries were built for a bygone era where some fiction,

access to the Encyclopedia Britannica, puppet shows and a quiet space where librarians were known to shush whispering patrons was all that was expected. Modern libraries are designed with children’s activities in mind, a variety of multi-media areas, quiet reading spaces and a hub for a variety of extended learning. Mayor Lois Jackson

stated in 2011 that her administration is focused on paying off debt in her fifth term as mayor, and will refuse any new special projects that would necessitate borrowing. I’m glad for Jackson that she will likely retire meeting her goal of zero debt for our municipality, but Delta seems to be attaining her goal at the long-term expense of our commu-

nity. South Delta’s population is growing by leaps and bounds. Single-family lots are being subdivided into two, three, five or more. Increased density, subdividing and overriding height restrictions are everyday approvals these days while our local amenities and services are falling further behind. Louise Latremouille

Bullying incident brings tears to woman’s eyes

Editor: I’m sharing, with disgust and disgrace, a scene I witnessed last Wednesday at 4:20 p.m. I am ashamed to report a bullying and harassment incident that brings tears to my eyes and repulsion to my heart. Two teens were spitting off their second floor balcony onto an eight- or 10-year-old boy as he unknowingly rode his bike

back and forth below. The girl, about 16, swore at him, making a mockery of his name and mixing it up with swear words. The second teen, a boy around 14, shouted out in a loud, mocking voice absolute nonsensical, guttural words and taunted him. Both teens laughed and swore a whole lot more as the young boy looked

up in bewilderment. He paused, then rode his bike towards his home. Shame, shame, shame. I’m embarrassed and horrified as I too am guilty because I said nothing to these lower-than-life teens, because I too have been continually harassed and intimidated by the tenants from hell next door who live a noisy lifestyle of drugs and alcohol,

partying and violence. Sorry from my heart to the lovely young and innocent boy and a trillion shames on the two teens. Which family deserves to live here in Ladner and be welcomed into our community? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Let’s call this what it is, a hate crime. Sally Brown

Cell phones are another noisy annoyance at library

Editor: Re: Library turning into another playground, letter to the editor, April 13 I could not agree more with Megan Amanda Fenn Thompson’s letter regarding noise at the Ladner Pioneer Library. Not only are some

children allowed to run around wildly in the back area, but some adult patrons hold long and loud cell phone conversations, making it very difficult for those people wanting to read or do research. After a recent visit when I left because of too

much noise, I asked at the front desk about loud cell phone conversations and was told the library had no policy regarding noise. I suggest a simple sign at the front door to help library visitors be considerate of others: “Everyone is welcome here. If you

have young children with you, please encourage them to speak quietly. If you need to take a cell phone call, please step outside until your call is complete. That way, everyone can enjoy their time at the library.” Pamela Perry

He’s pretty used to “house rabbit life” as he readily hops in and out of his kennels so we suspect he was owned at some point. On his arrival Marshall was a little bit spooked and didn’t enjoy handling that much. However he is willing to explore and climb over your lap to get to where he wants to be. We have not tested Marshall with other rabbits yet and he’s starting to learn how to us the litter box. We’re still getting to know Marshall and he’ll need to be neutered before going to his forever home, so stay tuned!

some research and found some information that may be of interest to this gentleman, among others. The word “gay” traces its origins back to the 12th century and at that time - as the aforementioned letter would attest - it was indeed defined as carefree or joyful. This first began to change during the 17th century when the word would go on to be associated with immorality and by the 19th century was attributed to promiscuousness. Gay was often used during this era when referring to a female prostitute or men who (ironically) slept with many women. Around the 1920s and ’30s, the term gay began to stray away from referring to prostitution and shifted more towards referring to having an uninhibited lifestyle (this actually ties

back to the word’s earlier definitions — carefree). It was around this period that homosexual men began to refer to each other as gay and the word became less used in its immoral sense. It was in 1955 that the word gay officially added a new definition to include homosexual males. One of the driving factors behind this was that many gay men felt the term homosexual was too clinical and sounded like a disorder. Although homosexual women could also be referred to as gay, this was less common at the time due to it formerly being used to refer to a prostitute. If you do your research, as I did, you can see the word has had a long history of shifts and turns since the days when it was used simply to refer to

someone as happy or carefree. And, of course, there is no written rule saying it can’t mean that anymore. It’s simply a word that has evolved and gained more definitions. There was a time when people with a mental or physical disability were referred to by a six-letter word that nowadays is completely unacceptable to use. The same can be said for formerly common words used to refer to people of various ethnicities or other minorities. That is the beauty of language; words shift and change and are ever evolving, as do we as humans. Nothing has ever been gained from remaining stagnant and set in our ways; the world only benefits from growth and forward movement. James S. Mitchell A proud gay man

Editor: Re: ‘Gay’ not just slang term, letter to the editor, April 6 Before reading the letter, I smirked a bit, feeling a sense of optimism as I assumed the letter could go on to discuss how the term “gay” is so often used as a derogatory slang term and I was pleased to see someone in the community was bringing that to light, as I feel it is a common occurrence so often overlooked. You can understand my disappointment, then, as I read what turned out to be someone’s uninformed, and at one point offensive commentary on how he believes the word has been stolen from its “original” meaning. After reading this letter, which left a sour taste in my mouth and awoke the activist in me, I did

Editor: Re: Williams re-elected chief, April 8 I refuse to use the term “First Nations” when referring to the native peoples of Canada. They are distinctive races and communities with unique customs, habits, diets, fashions and rituals who are integral to the history and identity of Canada but they are not nations in any practical sense. They do not raise armies, print money, manage a postal service, send ambassadors to foreign nations or perform a myriad of other functions vital to the assertion of sovereignty. For the Tsawwassen territory with its several hundred residents to be deemed a nation

is as fraudulent as referring to Chinatown as a foreign country within Vancouver. I mistakenly received an envelope from a local charity that stated its address in “Vancouver, B.C., Coast Salish Territories.” When did this entity emerge? Is “Canada,” a native word, offensive to this group? Native communities are a recognized echelon of government within Canada. The Constitution Act, 1867 requires Parliament under section 91(24) to regulate “Indians and lands reserved for Indians.” Reserves are approximately equal in status and authority with municipalities. Sections 25 and 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 guarantee all existing treaty rights and

defines “aboriginal people” as “the Indian, Inuit and Metis peoples of Canada.” Nowhere in the Constitution of Canada is the term “First Nations” written. If native communities wish to be declared nations, then they should demand a constitutional amendment rather than indulging in semantical contortions. Furthermore, it would be extremely ludicrous, impractical and destructive if several “nations” were spawned from the same founding document. Some prominent native leaders speak about a dual identity for aboriginal persons which I find disquieting because it indicates they are loathe to declare themselves as Canadians

except on their passports or when reciting a ministerial oath. But the sybaritic prima donna Prime Minister Justin Trudeau insists on restoring a “nation-tonation” relationship with the natives. This is paradoxical because that is what Quebec separatists have advocated and Trudeau’s father successfully fought against. I doubt the many gallant aboriginal soldiers who served Canada in both wars were obsessed about nomenclature when they joined the military unlike the absurd, bewildering epoch of hyper-sensitivity we presently live in. They were simply Canadians then. Steven Austin

Information session and new tool to track port-area noise Monitoring stations set up at three locations in vicinity of port

The Port Community Liaison Committee is a group of 16 community, government and business representatives that meet regularly to share information, discuss and resolve concerns related to port operations at Roberts Bank. It is currently looking at the issue of port noise. Noise is an important quality of life factor for everyone. Whether it’s from a car-alarm outside your window, or a train whistle five kilometres away, the impact can be disruptive to the peacefulness we might otherwise enjoy. Noise becomes a problem when it causes annoyance, sleeplessness or other kinds of stress. The actual loudness of a sound may be only one component of its effect; other variables include time and place, duration, weather conditions and the degree to which the listener has any control over it. Not surprisingly, people’s experience of noise varies considerably. At the Port Community Liaison Committee (PCLC), noise is one of the most frequent concerns we hear about. This is understandable, given that many of the operations at Roberts Bank are continuous, 24/7 processes. It is also the nature of port activity — characterized by signals and engine noises from a combination of ships, terminal machinery, trucks and trains. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has a Community Feedback line to receive complaints and information about port activities (604-665-9004). In addition, the PCLC encourages local residents to relay their questions or concerns, anytime, directly to the committee at PCLC@portvancouver. com. This feedback enables the port authority, B.C. Rail, and key industrial tenants (Westshore Terminals, GCT Deltaport) to learn directly about noise issues and, wherever possible, address the concerns. This is often how business practises evolve. One example of this is the long-term noise monitoring program that has recently been implemented by the port authority. Noise is tracked by three monitoring sta-

An information session on the port’s noise monitoring program is being held on Saturday, May 7. tions in the vicinity of Roberts Bank terminals — at Fred Gingell Park, the Deltaport Tug Basin and Tsawwassen First Nation. The monitoring of conditions in these locations can allow the source of specific noise events — whether related to the port or as a result of normal urban activities — to be more effectively identified, along with any trends or spikes. In turn, this feedback loop can inform future port and regional planning, and contribute to potential improvements. Community members can now view real-time information from each of these tracking stations online. To access the data, go to http://portmetrovan-

couver.pmv.noisesentinel. com/. Volume levels and other information are available, which may be cross-referenced with local activity to better understand the sources of noise. If you are interested in learning more about the noise monitoring program — and would like to see how to use the online tool — the PCLC will be hosting an information session on Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the port authority’s community office in Ladner’s Trenant Park Square. This will be a good opportunity to see a demonstration of the online noise monitoring tool, and to hear first-hand about noise-related concerns.

DOCTOR SHORTAGE will only get worse

WRITTEN BY

Sandor Gyarmati

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

With many GPs on the verge of retirement, the next wave of family physicians isn’t ready to fill the gap Is there a doctor anywhere? That’s what South Deltans are asking as they see their family docs retire, leaving many longtime patients scrambling to find a GP. Problem is, there just aren’t many new doctors out there, especially those accepting new patients. Tsawwassen resident Ingrid Abbott is one of those people now on the hunt for a new family physician after her doctors, the husband-and-wife team of Dominic and

Dr. Ken Lai retired last year after 43 years in practice. He’s been replaced by Dr. Sandy Chuang, but many other GPs aren’t passing their practices on to new doctors. FILE PHOTO

Veronica Eustace, announced they’re retiring in May. The couple operates a practice that also has a walk-in clinic component, and their departure is a story that will be repeated all over the province as older physicians hang up their stethoscopes. Noting Tsawwassen will be left without a walk-in clinic, forcing those without a primary doctor to go to Ladner, Abbott said seniors, especially, are concerned. “In Ladner, that (walk-in clinic) will be even more stressed with the closing of

this practice, but where else can all these people go?” asked Abbott. “Apparently the days of somebody buying your practice or taking it over are gone in family medicine.” Dr. Alan Ruddiman, president-elect of Doctors of B.C, formerly the B.C. Medical Association, said the shortage isn’t so much about new doctors being hired away by other provinces, but is a more complex issue that has a variety of factors. It’s all creating pressures that he said will become more intense as an estimated 25 per cent of doctors in the province say they plan to retire in the next five to 10 years. “For a number of reasons we’ve arrived at a place, I think not just in British Columbia but nationally and internationally now, where there is a real, and not just a perceived, shortage of very skilled family physicians who come with enhanced skills and are willing to literally provide full service in their practice,” he said. “There’s a generational issue where physicians that have been practicing 20, 30, 40 years, the model was when you finish medical school, you did your residency, and you came out with your residency as a family doctor. What you would do is seek a community, start your own family practice or join a practice. Traditionally, there was a buy-in into a practice. There’s so many practices now where physicians are wanting to retire or delaying retiring until someone comes in.” Ruddiman noted new doctors are choosing to delay having their own practices, electing instead to work in such roles as fill-ins. It’s a way new graduates prefer to ease their way into family medicine, he explained. He added for what-

ever reason, there’s a sense among new graduates that they’re not fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of a family practice. “So if you’re a solo practitioner that’s planning on retiring, I would suggest they will have a lot of difficulty finding a family physician to replace them. These younger doctors, they want to work in group practice. They want to have more senior physicians in the practice that can act as a bit of a mentor and resources to them. “They’re also being trained in university to consider working in collaborative teams, so not just groups of family doctors working together but doctors who work alongside nurses and nurse practitioners and possibly care aides and physiotherapists. There is this flavour that the new generation of family physicians are choosing to practice medicine a little bit differently than their more senior or closer to retiring doctors.” When Dr. Ken Lai retired last year after 43 years in practice in Ladner, he was replaced by Dr. Sandy Chuang, but that

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington doesn’t see it that way, saying that when the government made its ambitious promise in 2010, an estimated 176,000 British Columbians were looking for a family physician, yet last year the minister of health said that number had climbed to nearly 210,000. “The GP shortage presents a real challenge for people in South Delta. According to the Ministry of Health, there may be over 2,000 people looking for a family doctor in our community. For the moment, they are out of luck. Each GP’s practice serves 1,000 to 2,000 patients, so unless new family doctors replace those that retire, more people in South Delta will be looking for help,” Huntington said. In 2013, the government spent $132 million on a program called GP For Me, involving Doctors of B.C., formerly the B.C. Medical Association. The initiative has been able to match over 55,000 patients to primary care providers. Delta has been involved with that initiative through a group of local physicians that’s part of the Delta Division of Family Practice. The group late last year launched a website called FETCH (For Everything That’s Community Health) that helps the public and health care providers access information about community health services in South Delta. The site (delta.fetchbc.ca), created with the assistance of local health care professionals, service agencies and community partners, including the Corporation of Delta, recently saw a new feature launched linking patients looking for a doctor with available family physicians. In a presentation to Delta council in December, Dr. Craig Martin, vice-chair of the Delta Division of Family Practice, said the goal is to help unattached patients find family doctors. Patients on the list would be contacted directly by the physicians, however Martin and other representatives of the Delta Division of Family Practice were quick to point out they didn’t want to raise expectations too high because it could take months to get a response. “Fifty per cent of us are going to retire in the next seven to eight years,” warned Martin, who said that isn’t good news given quite a few of the older Delta physicians have a large number of patients. He noted UBC does not have enough new medical students entering school to fill the void, so recruitment has to take place from other

provinces and countries. “The public should be in an uproar about this because we’re scrambling to get doctors from all around the world and we’re fighting within Canada to get doctors over here, but Ontario is doing the same, Nova Scotia is doing the same. So we’re going after the same pool of physicians. We’re just not graduating enough every year,” he said.

Martin added both the provincial and federal governments have a role to play. The Delta Division of Family Practice has been working on recruitment, successfully recruiting three new doctors in recent months, but is also trying to convince some of the older doctors to stick around a little longer. In a letter last month to Mayor Lois Jackson, who had written to government requesting an increase in the number of post-graduate medical seats at UBC, Lake responded that the province has increased the number of spaces, primarily in family medicine, which he called the area of greatest need. Lake noted without the expansion, UBC would have graduated 672 family physicians between 2001 and 2014, however, it’s been able to graduate 1,182 over that time. Meanwhile, when it comes to retiring doctors moving their patients’ files to a private storage company, Huntington said if the government can’t resolve the current GP shortage, then at a minimum it should cover the document-transfer fees of patients who lose their family doctor and have nowhere else to turn.

At a public forum on Delta Hospital last year, Tsawwassen physician Dr. Martin Ray suggested more family doctors could be attracted if the community had a higherfunctioning hospital. FILE PHOTO

Fifty per cent of us are going to retire in the next seven to eight years, that isn’t good news given quite a few of the older Delta physicians have a large number of patients.

type of succession seems more of a rarity these days. Ruddiman noted a big problem that’s also catching up to communities is that not enough medical graduates are produced on an annual basis to support and replace the doctors who are emigrating to other jurisdictions or retiring, thus Canada has relied heavily on international medical graduates, particularly for rural communities. UBC has tried to address the issue over the past few years by spreading out its teaching programs throughout the province, but more is needed. “What we’re looking to have is people who come out with very broad generalists skills. We certainly need specialists and subspecialists across the province, but they’re not providing the longitudinal care to communities and the public,” he said. “Where we need to be investing as a province is the universities and educational programs for solid generalist medicine.” Ruddiman said one survey found about 100,000 people in Vancouver don’t have a family doctor, although about one-third of them were not actively seeking one. Many people are now using walk-in clinics, not only out of necessity but also convenience, a trend that’s tying up doctors in those types of practices. Last year provincial Health Minister Terry Lake admitted he’s unsure if the province would be able to deliver on its promise of ensuring every British Columbian has access to a family physician, although he noted there has been progress on that front.

nterested in growing your own fruits and vegetables? The Delta Community Farm in Tsawwassen is looking for more people to get involved and join its group of growers. “We’re hoping people will come,” says president John Woolliams.

He notes there is “always somebody here” Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings to show newcomers around. “The key is that we want to have people come down, the community come down, and do … what they’re interested in,” says Woolliams, who has a background in horticulture. The farm got started about a year ago and is

about a quarter of an acre in size. Involvement is open to anyone, youngsters included. “Everyone’s welcome,” says Roger Macpherson, one of the farm members. He explains the idea is for people to work together rather than independently. “We like the team idea,” he says. Those starting out will

be given help to get going. “We give them advice. We show them how to do things,” says Macpherson. Current items being grown include hardy corn, herbs, cauliflower, peas, rhubarb and figs. Macpherson says everything is grown organically. The farm is located at the corner of Boundary Bay Road and 3rd Avenue behind the Gunn House and beside the Earthwise

Society. Woolliams and Macpherson say that’s a temporary location and the farm will eventually be moving to a larger spot still within the Southlands area. There’s an annual fee of $20 per family to take part. Those interested can drop by the farm Wednesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon or call 604-948-0629.

Choir and band team up for benefit concert DAVE WILLIS

The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir and the Cariboo Hill Temple Band of the Salvation Army will team up for a benefit concert in Tsawwassen next Saturday. There will be a combination of religious and secular music, says band member Tim Braund. Braund, who lives in Tsawwassen and plays cornet, notes the choir and band will each perform part of the concert

on their own and will also “do a number of pieces together.” The choir is billed as one of the largest in Canada, with about 100 auditioned members, according to its website, and the band is comprised of about 30 members. It will be a “pretty full sound,” says Braund, noting the choir usually performs with 80 to 85 members and that the two groups performed a fundraiser together in December in Vancouver. Proceeds will go to three

of the Salvation Army’s projects. They include a Cariboo Hill Temple Street Ministry program serving people who live in the Downtown Eastside, a culinary arts program at Belkin House and a missions trip to Zimbabwe. The concert is set for Saturday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988-56th St., Tsawwassen. Tickets are $27 for adults, $25 for seniors and $10 for students with ID. Tickets are available at vwmc.ca, call 604878-1190 or at the door.

The event, first held in 2004, is not restricted to members but open to anyone that wishes to enter, working in any medium. Registration details and prospectus are available at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com. As always, Oil and Water is judged by three awardwinning artists who have achieved top signature status recognition from the Federation of Canadian Artists, itself initiated by Canada’s famous pioneering artists, the Group of Seven. For 2016, they are Barrie Chadwick, Susan Cowan and Perry

Haddock, and each will have a painting on display at the show. Chadwick was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia, became an architect, emigrated to Canada in 1965, and continued to pursue his major interest in art, working mostly on impressionistic landscapes in oils and acrylics, exhibiting in several galleries. He lives in West Vancouver and has a grandchild as keen on art as he was as a child. Cowan, born in Scotland and now living in Coquitlam, has been a highly respected and popular artist and teacher since 1993, specializing in portraits, still life and landscapes, painted in oil or acylic. Her landscapes are unique. They are all small-format and painted “plein air” quickly, simplified before the outside light can change and ruin

Skopje, Macedonia — city of monuments IRENE BUTLER

A

Optimist contributor

more inviting city centre than in Skopje, Macedonia is hard to come by. The Vardar River flows lazily through it. Folks mill about from early morning until the after dark blaze of neon lights. One side of the river holds a plethora of restaurants and cafes; the other side boasts a museum, national theatre and government buildings in neoclassical and baroque style. And here, there and everywhere are stunning monuments of historic figures and national heroes. I am amazed to learn most of these edifices and statues have been constructed as part of an urban renewal project, Skopje 2014, only officially announced in 2010. All the statues are impressive, but the one of Philip II of Macedon is outstanding. Towering above in gleaming bronze with his fist raised, I envision him mouthing a phrase attributed to him, “Divide and conquer!” And he did just that — being the first to conquer the Greek states, and later uniting them. He was king of Macedon from 359BC until his assassination in

336BC, when his son Alexander the Great continued his mission for empire building in the worthiest of manners. Across the river in Macedonia Square, an eight-storey monument dwarfs its surroundings. “Alexander the Great,” is offered by locals, as we stand mesmerized by a heroic figure perched on a rearing steed atop a gigantic fountain with soldiers and lions around its base. Two bridges cross the Vardar from this central area. The showy Art Bridge is a pedestrian walk-way lined with statues of famous painters, sculptors, writers and philosophers – 29 in total. Within a stone’s throw is a second crossing — the Old Stone Bridge (Kameni Most) built on Roman foundations by the Ottoman in the late 15th century. It leads us to Caršija (Old Bazaar) where the Ottoman past lingers in architecture and colourful market streets. From here my husband Rick and I climb a lengthy set of steps with bustling eateries built on platforms that jut out from the hillside. The jovial mood of the customers is catchy, and our resistance to the tantalizing aromas lasts but a minute. We are soon feasting on Tavce gravce, a delectable bean, onion, dried

Art Bridge in Skopje, Macedonia. red pepper dish served in the earthenware bowl in which it was baked. Fortified for the remaining climb, we reach the Kale Fortress, originally built on a hilltop in the sixth century by the Byzantine rulers of the day. Another day we seek out the triumphal arch, Porta Macedonia, completed in 2012 to commemorate 20 years of independence from the former Yugoslavia. Leaving the arch behind,

our mission is to locate a small museum, built on the birthhome of Mother Teresa, now a canonized saint. We follow this ethnic Albanian’s life-journey from precocious child to tenacious nun who dedicated her life to the most destitute. We walk further to see the Old Railway Station with its clock that remains at the time it stopped at 5:17 a.m. on July 26, 1963 when the catastrophic earthquake struck. Eighty per

cent of the city was destroyed, over 1,000 people died, thousands were injured and 200,000 were left homeless. Our relaxed wanderings through Skopje were akin to a walk through history showcasing the rich blend of cultures that make up this country, enhanced by red-carpet treatment shown to us by its citizens every step of the way. Film tackles orphan crisis Kirk Wong, a documentary filmmaker from Calgary, and his team will bring the compelling orphan care documentary Lost Kites to Delta next week. Lost Kites follows a young film team seeking answers for the global orphan crisis. While visiting 22 countries in two years, members encounter three abandoned orphans who change their lives: Sanjoy, a young teen in India caught up in street life; Werick, soon to be too old to stay in his orphanage in Brazil, who takes one shot at making it on the city’s professional soccer team; and Carmela, an adorable Chinese toddler in foster care, who needs a risky surgery due to a life-threatening heart condition. The ultimate goal of the film is to demonstrate how hope is found in a compassionate, family-based childcare model that can save future generations of orphans from deep trauma. “Of course we all want to help orphans,” said filmmaker Casey Walker, “but it can feel overwhelming.

The track at Paterson Park has received some TLC in preparation for tomorrow’s Splash N’ Dash and Kids of Steel Triathlon. With road work taking place on Arthur Drive, the annual Delta Triathlon has been reduced to two legs this year: swimming at the Ladner Leisure Centre and running at Paterson Park. The Kids of Steel Triathlon will also include a cycling segment along Mountain View Boulevard and 44th Avenue, requiring some traffic disruptions. The action gets underway at 8 a.m.

Chocolate at All Saints

ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT

Optimist contributor

What comes to mind when you think about chocolate? Hmmm, let me think … comforting, extravagant, just a necessary part of everyday life. I tend to agree with Charles Schultz, who once said, “Exercise is a dirty word. Every time I hear it I wash my mouth out with chocolate.” This Sunday at 2 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner we will be gathering in the hall to taste some yummy chocolate and have a chocolaty afternoon of fun. It may be stretching it to think of the Psalm writer who says, “Taste and see that the Lord is Good” and then participate in a chocolate taste-test, but there will be a chance to experience abundantly the gift of chocolate. Tickets for the event are $15 and can be purchased at the door. All proceeds will be directed to the Just Imagine ministry plan. The church is located at 4755 Arthur Dr.

Sitting here in these beautiful surroundings of South Delta, I wonder how often I have forgotten about God’s love reaching out to me — and ignored the signs of God’s love all around me, in friends, in nature, in worship and praise. “Renew, refresh, and rejoice…” This week a group of Anglican clergy has gathered to reflect on these words that appear in the biblical text many times. Our guest speaker, Richard Topping, began by reminding us that we need to come back again and again to this notion of being renewed and refreshed by God’s love for us and in thanksgiving for this love, to rejoice in it. Remember the bible story (John 5:2-9) of the man sitting by the pool hoping for healing? He sat there for 38 years hoping to be first in the pool when the waters were stirred up by the healing powers of

Mayor helping put trades in spotlight

Lois Jackson sees benefit of annual fair as many good-paying jobs don’t require university degree SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a i t @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Apprenticeship training will be more important than ever for young people wanting to take advantage of a growing demand for skilled labour in this province, says Delta Mayor Lois Jackson. Three years ago, the mayor spearheaded the launch of the Delta Trades and Technical Fair, an annual event held in North Delta that gives young people an array of ideas on fulfilling careers that don’t follow the university or college academic routes. This year’s Delta Trades and Technical Fair will take place Thursday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sungod Recreation Centre. “What I’ve seen through the years is that everybody wants to have their children go to university. Maybe they will get a BA, but it doesn’t really put them in a position after university where they have a job down the

road. There’s a number of people I’ve seen leave university but all they’re really equipped for is to work at McDonald’s. This is a fact,” said Jackson. Jackson said young people and parents should recognize there are many good-paying jobs that don’t require a university degree. “We are very short on skills and skilled labour in B.C., so I took it upon myself to say let’s open the door and open the minds of young people and parents to something like welding or plumbing and all of these careers that are very high-paying that can be an option,” added the six-term mayor. Started in 2013, next week’s Delta Trades and Technical Fair at the Sungod Arena has grown to 75 exhibitors and will have thousands of attendees. It’s a partnership with the Delta school district, BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Community

College, employers and industry organizations. Media partners include the Optimist. The annual free event for students, parents and the public is an opportunity to explore trades and technical careers through hands-on, interactive exhibits, demonstrations and talking directly with experts. Students can chat with industry professionals about culinary arts, mechanics, hair and aesthetics, aviation, policing, plumbing and much more. For females considering entering trades, there are many more opportunities as the province has pledged additional funding for mentorship for women. For more information, visit the Corporation of Delta’s website at delta.ca. FILE PHOTOS

Skilled workforce key to province’s future Shirley Bond says there’s never been better time to consider a career in the trades SANDOR GYARMATI

Helping build and expand a skilled workforce to meet this province’s labour demand is a key priority for the B.C. government, MLA Shirley Bond says. Bond, who serves as the chair of the Cabinet Committee on Strong Economy, was asked how the province plans to help equip young people, including those who will check out next week’s Delta Trades and Technical Fair, to fulfill that demand for skilled workers. “With all the possibilities of a diverse, strong and growing B.C. economy ahead of us, there has never been a better time to consider a career in the skilled trades in British Columbia. B.C is expect-

“One of the best ways to prepare young adults for work is to provide them with the skills training required for their chosen career path,” Bond said. “We want to help students succeed, which is why the province offers significant funding supports for those completing an apprenticeship in a skilled trade.” She said an apprenticeship remains one of the best ways for young workers to gain the necessary skills for in-demand jobs. “Our government recognizes that B.C’s youth are a key demographic that will help to fill the growing demand for skilled labour. I encourage everyone to attend the Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair to learn more about the options and opportunities available.” Bond said the Find Your Fit interactive exhibit will

ing nearly one million job openings over the next decade and we know that our province has reached a tipping point with fewer young people entering the workforce than older people leaving it,” said Bond. “Helping to build and expand a skilled workforce to meet our labour demand is a key commitment under B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint. Through the blueprint, we are helping British Columbians get the skills they need to be first in line for job openings.” She said almost 80 per cent of all job openings will require post-secondary education and training, which is why the government is reengineering its education and training programs towards a datadriven system that focuses investment on jobs that are in-demand.

Klassen lands in Miami sand South Delta volleyball standout verbally commits to Florida International MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Another South Delta Sun Devils volleyball player is taking her game to American sand. Grade 11 standout Ashley Klassen has made a verbal commitment with Florida International University, starting in September 2017. She becomes the third player from Tsawwaassen headed to an NCAA Division One school in the last two years — joining Megan and Nicole McNamara who are currently in their freshman season at UCLA. Beach volleyball is the newest and fastest growing sport at U.S. colleges. It was first introduced back in 2009 and six years later at least 50 schools offer programs. The inaugural NCCA Championship takes place in two weeks in Alabama. For Klassen, the timing of the sport’s emergence couldn’t be better. Recognized as one of the top high school age setters in B.C. for the indoor version of the game, she had her options of what path she wanted to continue. A trip to Miami last November to the FIU campus made her decision much clearer. The Panthers have established themselves as one of the top programs in the country — currently ranked 10th in the nation. Their roster is loaded with international players — representing seven countries. Klassen will be joining two other Canadians for the 2017-18 school year. “After going to FIU I was just blown away and knew where I wanted to go,” said Klassen. “The campus was like no other and being in Miami I knew I would always be playing in the

Ashley Klassen will be playing beach volleyball at Florida International University starting in September 2017. sun. The team is so strong and the coaches are great. The academics are really strong too. There was just a lot of great things about it. “The sport has become more serious in recent years and for me, as a player, that’s very exciting.” Indoor volleyball remains very much a big part of her life. She wound down her club season this past weekend at the provincial championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval with the Coquitlam Ducks. Klassen will return for her Grade 12 year at SDSS next September looking to lead the Sun Devils back to provincial contention. She had a significant role in the school’s last pro-

vincial championship in 2014 when she was aged up from junior and earned First Team All-Star honours. She is grateful for the coaching she has received over the years on the floor and in the sand that has shaped her promising career. “I grew up playing both and indoor will always have my heart too. It was just be weird not to play with my (indoor teams) anymore.” she smiled. “The scenery and where you are is a big factor (in choosing beach). Playing outdoors is a huge bonus. I also get a chance to play everything and do all the skills where inside I would just be a setter.” Klassen had always

played beach volleyball “for fun” but didn’t start taking it seriously until coming across the Sideout Beach Club when she was at a park in Surrey. “We were using indoor balls outside and the coach came up to us and asked if we wanted to try their outdoor balls,” Klassen laughed. “I knew the (McNamara) twins were with them and it was a great club.” Klassen’s beach training is now year-round including sessions during the winter at the 6 Pack Indoor Beach facility on Mitchell Island in Richmond. Now, the training has shifted to mainly Kits Beach where she works out with her partner — Burnaby’s Bianca Te. The pair are

getting ready for a competitive season that will include provincials at Spanish Banks and the nationals back east. Klassen will still have a few more hurdles to clear before she has the first opportunity to officially sign with FIU next November as per NCAA’s strict recruitment guidelines. They include writing her SATs. Mom and dad will be making sure everything is in order. “It’s like she is engaged now and the marriage is in November,” smiled Tina Klassen. “We’ve always encouraged our kids to go out and explore. We’re excited that Ashley feels independent and strong enough to go.”

Banner finish for Storm

Pee Wee Red Sox on early roll

Ladner Red Sox are off to a fast start in B.C. Minor Baseball’s Pee Wee AA League with a 6-1-1 record including a big win over Burnaby last Saturday at Maple Park.

An individual player, a coach, an enthusiastic parent or a fan does not win a championship; a team does. The South Delta Storm Bantam “C” hockey team certainly proved that. The players on the team played to the “best of their ability” each game. The coaching staff: Ron Kee (head coach), along with Hart Buck, Tom Berger, Patrick Watts and Alan Marshall were great assistant coaches in all areas. They often talked of the character of the team first versus results on the ice. The Bramwell family were integral to the team’s success with son Adam playing, Christine as manager and John as the Hockey Canada Safety Person. Christine was organized, giving, thoughtful and always had a sense of humour in the thankless position. The Storm started the season slow and like a tsunami, they became stronger in all facets of their game as the year progressed. They transformed from

South Delta Bantam “C” Storm were playoff champs. a very defensive team early on to one that remembered to play defence while working a little harder in the offensive zone. This change resulted in more well-rounded efforts and a few more wins as the season progressed. The Storm then started to score goals in bunches. They realized with hard work in all three zones of the ice they could have great results. In five playoff games, they had four wins and one tough loss. Their 28 goals for and just 9 goals against proved to the players they were a wellrounded team. The coaches noted, “the kids were firing on all cylinders”. There were

two shutouts in the four wins, which indicated that defence came first. These were truly “team shutouts” as all players worked hard to keep the puck out of the net. The roster included: Reilly Kee (goalie). Aydan Benning, Maverick Silveira, Chase Marshall, Brian Berger and David Begin (defence). Keegan Kozack, Fraser Buck, Jackson Schwartz, Ben Lingham, Ryan Martin, Adam Bramwell, Joshua Griffiths, Ryan Kadyschuk, and Santi Vargas-Naranjo (forward). Aydan Benning led as captain and was supported well by assistant captains – Chase Marshall, Fraser Buck and Keegan Kozack.

Learn to Row GRAVES, Douglas B. (Reverend, Retired) Dec 13, 1944 - March 23, 2016

PAUL NEWTON 1959 – 2006 Fig has now missed 520 Wednesday Meetings!

OBITUARIES

We are deeply saddened to announce that Doug passed away suddenly in Powell River, BC. Doug and his wife Laurel had moved from Tsawwassen to Powell River just over 2 years ago, where he joined in to community life, offering his experience and knowledge to the Welcome Refugees Powell River Committee, becoming an adult literacy tutor, serving the L’Arche Comox Valley community as a mentor, as well as continuing his work with the L’Arche International Church Leaders group. As a member of the Powell River United Church and a retired minister, Doug sang in the choir, and helped where he could, presiding over funerals and leading worship as needed.

EDELMEIER, Margaret Theresa April 16, 1927 to April 6, 2016 Margaret left us peacefully, having lived a life filled with her beloved family, many wonderful friends, her flower-filled garden, and a love of music. She leaves behind her sister (Rathner) and family in Austria; her three children Wolfgang, Helen (Nell) and Andy; their spouses Morgan and Heather; and grandchildren Lauren, Max, Rachel and Kyla, as well as great-granddaughter Vivian and special daughter Shea. She is pre-deceased by her brother Hans, her husband Pio, and later, her longtime companion Franz Lindner. Margaret (Gretel Wimmer) was born in Weis, Austria and lived through the War, later working as a teacher in an alpine village. After the war, Pio, Margaret and young Wolf moved to Vancouver, where Helen and Andy were born. She retained her Austrian culture through her large network of friends and neighbors in the Lower Mainland, spending the last twentyfive years in Tsawwassen. Margaret always put her family first and foremost; she travelled extensively to visit them and also explored the world widely with a quest and love for new friends and places. With special gifts of humour and kindness, and an inspiring, positive Weltanshauung, she touched many different people from all walks of life. She sparkled in social settings and loved to bake and entertain for all her loved ones. She loved life. She is missed and will always be first in our hearts. There will be a celebration of her life on Monday, April 25th from 1:30 to 4:00 at the South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner are suggested.

Ordained in 1969, Doug had served congregations in rural Manitoba and Vancouver, including First United, Southill, Ladner and St Stephen’s in Delta. In the last years of his working ministry Doug helped organize several community dialogues between the Tsawwassen First Nation and the non-aboriginal residents of Delta, to ease tensions and promote understanding. This was just one of the many projects during his life, that highlight his insight, quiet pursuit of justice, patience with people and hopeful, optimistic nature.
