Public agrees with MLA Poll shows voters want big money taken out of politics as Huntington proposed SANDOR GYARMATI

British Columbians agree with Vicki Huntington when it comes to taking big money out of politics. That’s according to an online survey sponsored by Dogwood Initiative, a B.C. citizens’ advocacy group. The survey results made public last week showed 86 per cent of British Columbians would support a ban on corporate and union donations before the next election, including 81 per cent of
B.C. Liberal voters and 91 per cent who voted for the New Democrats in the last election. B.C. is the last large province in Canada to allow unlimited donations from anywhere in the world, including in municipal elections. The group says the survey, conducted by Insights West, suggest this has left the public deeply cynical about the position of ordinary citizens in democracy. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN
• April 26, 1 a.m., ferry terminal: Terminal supervisor reported three males in a white truck towing a boat trailer drilled the padlock on the gate to access the beach. Police attended and spoke with the suspects who claimed they were late arriving back due to problems with their boat and as the gate was locked attempted to contact the authorities but were unsuccessful. As a result they felt they had no choice but to drill the lock. They were apologetic and stated they would pay for the lock. The men left the area after providing contact information to security. • April 28, 2:30 p.m., 1600-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported he had left his rental car in the parking lot and sometime overnight it was entered. His briefcase, iPhone, iPad, Columbia jacket and phone charger were stolen. Investigation revealed the lock on the driver’s door appeared to be punched. No video surveillance in area where
vehicle parked.
LADNER
• April 25, 8:10 p.m., 3600-block of 64th Street: While police were speaking with a male about an unrelated traffic incident an odour of alcohol was detected on his breath. The suspect admitted to drinking “some beers” about four hours prior. Two breath samples provided by the suspect both read “Warn” and as a result he was issued a three-day roadside suspension. The suspect walked back to his friend’s residence. • April 25, 10:25 p.m., 96th Street and Highway 10: Police conducted a traffic stop and a police computer check found the driver was prohibited from driving. He was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. The vehicle was impounded and the occupants were picked up by a friend. • April 27, 10:31 a.m., 8000-block of Alexander Road: A business reported that sometime overnight a break and entry had occurred. The complainant indicated someone had cut the chain link fence leading to the business yard but could not confirm if anything had been stolen. The complainant also informed police this was one of several similar incidents. As the yard had been accessed by multiple staff the incident was reported for information only. • April 29, 4:38 p.m., 7100-block of Venture Street: Complainant reported an attempted theft of his vehicle battery. The truck was parked by a staff member at the rear of the business and
in the morning the complainant found a wrench stuck in the passenger window. The complainant believes the suspects tried to unsuccessfully lift the cabin of the truck in a failed attempt to reach the batteries. Nothing for identification services as the wrench had been handled by several employees. • April 30, 10:35 a.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported a break and enter to a business by suspects who had gained entry through the vacant business next door. Maintenance was on the scene to repair damage before police attended. Nothing for identification services. • April 30, 1:26 p.m., 4600-block of River Road: Complainant reported the license plate was stolen from his utility trailer while parked in an open area. Both license plate and valtag entered in the police computer database. • May 1, 12:40 p.m., 72nd Street: Complainant reported her vehicle was broken into while parked in the North 40 Dog Park. A leather bag containing a purse, ID, credit cards and cash was stolen. Information regarding the stolen items entered in the police computer database. • May 1, 4:22 p.m., 6100-block of Highway 17: A business reported that when an employee came into work she found a small window had been smashed. It appears suspects reached through the window and stole a laptop located on a table. No entry was gained further into the office. Incident still under investigation for possible video surveillance from a neighbouring business.

Delta seeks dredging money
Mayor hoping feds will address situation in secondary channels SANDOR GYARMATI

They’re hoping the new federal government will seriously consider solving the local dredging dilemma, says Mayor Lois Jackson. Jackson was part of a delegation that recently went to Ottawa to meet federal officials to discuss several issues of concern to Delta, including the need for a sustainable dredging program for the lower Fraser River secondary channels. “I think the bottom line is, yes, we do need to have ongoing dredging and it has to be sustainable over the next many years. Of course, we bought to their attention, again, that the St. Lawrence Seaway, even though they don’t dredge, they certainly need a tremendous amount of money for ice breaking and it eats up about 80
per cent of the budget… we’re just looking for some equity here. “We have a huge economic investment in the Fraser River for fishing and industry FILE PHOTO and all kinds After some upcoming maintenance of things. allocated for future dredging maintenance, but that will be all the dredging that gets done unless new money somehow becomes available. Jackson said even before the funding that’s now almost gone was granted, Delta had been seeking a pool of money to be set aside whereby the interest could be used for maintenance dredging. A Delta staff report last fall noted: “The river continues to deposit sediment each year and, without regular maintenance and dredging, the channels will continue to fill in and will eventually reach a critical point when a major dredging effort will once again be required.” Delta signed on earlier this year to a new group spearheaded by the Ladner Sediment Group aimed at the development of a management plan for the lower Fraser River.

‘Intense demand’ on industrial land Strong sales numbers and low vacancy rates putting pressure on dwindling supply in region SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
As if the demand wasn’t already high enough, Delta and Richmond have become even more sought after for industrial development. According to a recent report by Avison Young, new construction and transportation infrastructure continues to reshape Delta’s expanding industrial market and attract investment from all quarters, while the maturation of Richmond’s industrial nodes has proven attractive thanks to sustained demand and ongoing low vacancy. Listing examples of the strong industrial sales and leasing activity in Delta and Richmond, the report notes sales activity in Delta in 2015 was the second strongest on record. Meanwhile, strong leasing activity and a lack of supply pushed vacancy in Delta below five per cent for the first time since spring 2009. The report adds there will be “intense demand”
FILE PHOTO
There’s a continued demand for industrial property, particularly sites in proximity to ports and rail yards. from investors and owneroccupiers to relocate or expand over the next 12 months. While Delta remains a hot market, a recent study commissioned by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority found the current supply of tradeenabling land in the Lower
Mainland will likely be exhausted within 10 years. The report also concludes that industrial land located near major rail and road networks is needed for warehouse and distribution centres so goods movement can be done efficiently. “Specifically, sites with
proximity to Deltaport, Canadian National Railway or Canadian Pacific Railway inter-modal yards, and Highways #1, 91, 99 via the South Fraser Perimeter Road, all have the potential to host a major logistics hub,” the port report notes. The port authority
report also concludes that locating such facilities far from a port, and even outside the Lower Mainland, would mean increased truck traffic, more congestion, higher consumer prices and environmental impacts. Those findings are contrary to an inland port
study undertaken by Delta two years ago that found economic, social and environmental benefits of inland ports. The port authority has applied to build a second container terminal at Roberts Bank, leading environmental and farmland activists to warn that it will put even more development pressure on farmland in Delta. A letter to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency by the Delta Farmers’ Institute also warned of such a scenario. “Over the last decade, almost 400 hectares of farmland has been lost to impacts of port development, the Tsawwassen First Nation treaty agreement and the construction of the South Fraser Perimeter Highway. If Roberts Bank Terminal 2 goes ahead, agricultural lands will be further under pressure and as much as 600 hectares will be earmarked for port-related development,” wrote vice-president Clarence DeBoer.

his is an issue our new Delta MP can really make her own. There aren’t many matters specific to Delta that fall under the purview of the federal government, so this is an opportunity for Carla Qualtrough to not only demonstrate she’s got the community’s interests at heart but to also show us how the new gang in Ottawa operates. I’m referring to the need to dredge the secondary channels of the Fraser River, a situation that has been rectified in the short-term but one that requires long-term stability. It seems pretty straightforward in the sense that silt will invariably build up over time, so unless dredging is undertaken on a regular basis, the waterways will go from aggravating to dangerous to eventually unnavigable. The situation became a real political football, but thankfully enough partners came to the table to undertake a couple rounds of dredging that wrapped up early last year. There’s $1.5 million left over from the $10 million project that will now go toward some maintenance dredging, but once that money is spent, there’s no more. That would be fine if we could somehow stop the silt from accumulating, but given that’s not going to happen, a commitment is needed to fund ongoing work. Since it was the Liberals back in 1999 that downloaded the responsibility to create the mess in the first place, it would seem appropriate for the new Liberal regime to remedy the situation. A Delta delegation raised the issue when it was in Ottawa last month, and others have added their voices to the cause, including the Ladner Sediment Group that started the whole movement the better part of a decade ago, but this thing needs a champion, which is where Qualtrough comes in. Although a political rookie, she was held in such high regard by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that she was one of just three B.C. MPs appointed to cabinet following last fall’s election. I’m sure she’s being pulled in a million different directions these days, but Qualtrough pledged, both during the campaign as well as after her victory, that her riding and constituents would be her No. 1 priority. Well, the good folks that rely on the secondary channels need her help. Maintenance dredging is a no-brainer. It’s time the feds bucked up.
Foreign investors continue to fuel ever-escalating market
I
f you are renting, this piece will not give you much comfort. Much is being written these days about house prices, especially in the Vancouver area. Many feel prices have got out of control and some have suggested our politicians need to take action. Such hope does not seem to bring on any change to what is happening. And it’s spreading. In Victoria, a sample of current transactions shows houses selling for more than one-third above assessment and sales taking place within just five days of listing. My view of all of this is that we are in a cascade of events that will be hard to stop or regulate. It starts with offshore wealth seeking a safe haven — namely Vancouver real estate. Buying overpriced property means little if it increases in value, or even if it stays the same for a while. The funds have escaped to Canada — beyond the reach of other governments. The seller of the first house sells for, say, $4 million, and then has to replace his house. So he goes to Kerrisdale and buys a house for, say, $3.5 million. The Kerrisdale homeowner then
Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON
goes to Richmond and buys a house for $3 million, and that homeowner arrives in Delta with over $2 million to buy a house. Whether overpriced or not, the cash is in hand. The provincial government is reluctant to interfere as voters might get hurt if prices drop. The original investors are continuing to arrive with a suitcase of cash looking for the safe investments. As long as countries such as China are tightening up on graft and corruption, and restricting the export of cash, these transactions will continue. There are just too many with the capability to get around whatever rules are put in place. Restrictions on citizenship and
residency to buy real estate might work, but not without much tougher rules than what are now being discussed. When you compare us to London or Singapore — two alternatives these investors are aware of — we are a bargain. Our proximity to Southeast Asia makes us a favourite place to invest. Our rules are quiet lax in comparison. Imposing a non-resident tax of say 10 per cent on a property purchase means little if the property increases in value by 15 per cent per year. Prohibiting non-residents from purchasing is a pretty tough policy used in some areas. It can still be circumvented by purchasing through a third party suitably dressed up. So what can be done? Government controlled rental housing is one alternative that might work — in the short term. It might be funded by additional taxes levied on non-occupied, non–resident properties. Otherwise you need to look at how to get in the game. Joint ownership of properties is one option being used in London. Others are available, but not within my word count here. Ian Robertson is three-decade homeowner in South Delta.

Quieter equipment would reduce the annoyance
Editor: Re: Restrictions would only backfire, letter to the editor, April 29 I find E. Robson’s objection to reducing or eliminating noise from power washers shallow and misleading. I’ve washed my entire house and painted it four times over the last 44 years without making a noise, so it’s fact that so-called professional house cleaners like E. Robson could run their businesses just as considerately. It’s just a question of knowing how. Windex, Scotts, 30 Seconds and a few other companies have solutions that are sprayed on with garden hoses or with quiet
sprayers. No or little elbow grease is required before rinsing away the dirt and mildew these solutions loosen. They do not hurt plants if their easy directions are followed. Noiseless, effective, efficient cleaning — what could be more considerate and more professional? And there are quiet alternatives to the noisy machines that so-called professional gardeners and handymen and others use, but they cost a little more. Not a lot more, just a little more. One would think professionals would equip themselves with the quietest machinery instead of the noisiest. Other jurisdictions have
tried to persuade residents and so-called professionals to use quiet washers, weed whackers, mowers, leaf blowers and so on only to hear the false notion that quiet machinery is weak machinery. No, quiet machinery is not weak machinery, it merely costs a little more. Why isn’t Delta’s licensing department insisting that businesses be professional? That is, why can’t licensees be required to equip themselves with quiet machinery and prove through testing they know of better and more considerate — quiet — ways of conducting their services? Similarities with Hitler can’t be ignored
Editor: Re: Trump cartoon insulting, letter to the editor, May 4, and Times were too horrific to be trivialized, letter to the editor, May 4 In reply to the two letters criticizing my editorial cartoon, I was indeed revisiting history and making a comparison. Many others have already done this before I drew the cartoon, and typing into Google the words “Trump” and “Hitler” will reveal a plethora of similar com-
parisons. Hitler began his rise to power in an atmosphere of hard economic times (the Great Depression), by identifying visible minorities and others as being to blame for the bad times the German population was going through. Hitler succeeded in drawing out politically unsophisticated persons with limited knowledge and high levels of frustration, who did not normally participate in the political process, by manipulating their fears
and prejudices. Donald Trump appears to be using a similar tactic against the background of the 2008 economic meltdown. Both Hitler and Trump had supporters (in Hitler’s case, the Brown Shirts) who used violence against non-supporters at rallies, with both leaders condoning this activity. It might be hard for Trump supporters to swallow, but there are indeed similarities. Ulf Ottho

Neighbourhoods lose when heritage houses lost
Editor: Re: Heritage value might not save house, May 4 Once again a perfectly good heritage house is more than likely to be torn down. I know it is difficult but it is time for the people of Ladner and Tsawwassen to act; write letters to our
MLA or to the Corporation of Delta. This little cottage should be saved. Tearing down most heritage houses will make our neighbourhoods drab and redundant. Sell to overseas investors? The idea makes me sick, and I am pretty positive I am not alone on
this feeling. Take one look at the glutted and gridlocked mess that Steveston and Richmond has become and learn to love it; because that is our future if we cannot come up with a viable solution. J.J. VanMol

The Grade 2/3 class at École du Bois-Joli in Tsawwassen recently held an egg drop challenge as part of science class. The challenge consisted of each student coming up with a creation that would help protect an egg from breaking when thrown from the roof of the school. Most eggs survived the drop and the kids had fun making predictions about their projects.

Floss Mix Breed Rabbit, White with Brown, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 4 years old)
Floss came to the shelter as a stray intact female rabbit. We suspect she was owned at some point as she’s quite friendly and easy to handle. Floss is quite a little personality, she’s often found interacting with anyone or anything in the room. She’ll follow you back and fourth along her pen and she’s always on alert for anything new to explore. We’re waiting until she’s recovered from her spay surgery to see if she’ll be interested in making other bunny friends. Stay tuned for more information on Floss as we get to know her!

Ladner Rotary strikes gold
The Rotary Club of Ladner returned from the Rotary District 5040 conference in Whistler last weekend with a pair of awards. For developing sustainable service projects, building awareness of Rotary in the community, growing membership and giving to the Rotary Foundation, club received a gold level Presidential Citation. For exceptional work in enhancing public image and awareness of Rotary in the community, it also received the Communications Award along with the Rotary Club of Burnaby. “Service above self, in our local community or halfway around the world, generates the satisfaction all of us receive through our membership in Rotary,” says club president Peter Roaf. “To do all that and have

exchange ideas and take action on projects such as the water park planned for Ladner or in a global network to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. For more information, visit the Rotary Club of Ladner site at http://portal.clubrunner.ca/603.
Ladner Interact Club recognized The Rotary-sponsored Interact Club at Delta Secondary in Ladner received the Presidential Citation for exceptional achievement in 2015-16 at the Rotary District 5040 conference in Whistler last weekend. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ladner, the Interact Club is one of 23 clubs led by young people based at high schools or in the community associated
with some of the 48 Rotary clubs in Rotary District 5040. “The Interactors take great pleasure and pride from their achievements over the year, but the District 5040 Presidential Citation is an extra thrill for the well-deserved recognition it brings,” says Tammy Hansen, a Rotary Club of Ladner board director for New Generations and Delta
Secondary Interact Club facilitator. “I am always amazed by the energy, enthusiasm and passion the Interact members contribute to a better community and a better world and so happy for the sense of fulfillment they achieve through their service above self.” The Ladner Interact Club grew from 21 members last year to 30 this year.

Ladner United Church has a new community garden.
Church hosts open house at its community garden
Ladner United Church is hosting an open house this weekend to give residents a peek at its new community garden. The church included the garden space in its plans during the renovation and revitalization of the century-old building. The garden was built in the area between the church and the new townhouse development and is open to residents of the complex as well as members of the public. The open house is set for 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday and will include refreshments, speakers and a chance to enjoy the
garden. The garden includes some raised plots that are more accessible for those with mobility issues and features a walkway that leads to an expansive outdoor patio, as well as numerous benches from which people can enjoy the surrounding garden. This is the second community garden in Ladner. The Ladner Community Garden Society opened its site, which includes more than 40 plots, at Kensington Park North in spring 2011. Ladner United Church is located at 4960-48th Ave.
Annual Tomato Seedling Sale to benefit Delta Safe Haven
Ladner’s West Coast Seeds is hosting its annual Tomato Seedling Sale this weekend with partial proceeds going to Delta Safe Haven. The sale, which is in its eighth year, starts at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow and features more than 40 varieties of tomatoes as well as peppers, basil and cucamelons. Supplies are expected to last all weekend. The event also includes refreshments and door prizes.
Partial proceeds from the seedlings sold will benefit Delta Safe Haven, the organization providing support for Syrian refugee families settling in Delta. So far, Delta Safe Haven has welcomed three families, which includes seven adults and eight children, to the community. The group is working with the families to help them settle into their new lives in Canada. West Coast Seeds is at 4930 Elliott St.

Ladner’s Studio West Dance has had a very successful start to its competition season. Dancers from the local studio have racked up many high finishes at three competitions held in Surrey so far. “They’ve been working really hard. They’ve got a lot of really fun, exciting, challenging routines this year,” says studio owner and director Jyla Davis. A sample of the dancers’ success includes the Caterpillar (acro) and Fly Away (lyrical) groups bringing home Peak Challenge overall trophies from the Peak Invitational Dance Competition in March. The studio had numerous high score trophy winners at the Surrey Festival of Dance and followed that up with their Hallelujah group along with Peighton Brown (junior soloist) and Brown and Harrison Last (junior duo) winning Synergy Showdown honours at the Synergy Dance Competition last month. “I think everything has just really come together with our whole team,” says

We are on the cusp of the celebration of Mother’s Day. It is the annual recognition of the significant place of mothers in our life. Captain Obvious might say something like, “If it weren’t for mothers, none of us would be here.” It is a good thing to remember and give thanks for our mothers but we are reminded in scripture to do more than just give a passing nod of recognition, ”Honor your Father and Mother”— which is the first commandment with a promise — “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Ephesians 6: 2-3)
Minister’s Minute DANIEL KIRKEGAARD
Tsawwassen United Church
To honour our mother is to speak with high respect, esteem and distinction. In a world where these words seem to have lost
some of the substance of their meaning and import, it is all the more vital that the day of honouring, Mother’s Day be upheld so that each generation sees the inner meaning of our words and our outward actions give witness to faithful intent. It is also vital that in a world where too often the relationship between child and mother has been damaged, distorted or broken that we come along each one in the relationship and pray fervently for reconciliation and healing while encouraging avenues of practical support. All too often easier said than done.

The event, which also includes a silent auction and desserts, will benefit Freshwave Ministries, a South Delta-based Christian organization serving the less fortunate in Vancouver. The Karmichaels are a “real fun band” that play a mix of folk/country rock and some Celtic folk, explains Freshwave chairperson and event coordinator Dawn Magee. “They get everyone’s hands a clapping.” Magee describes Southside Vibe as a jazz/ soul/R&B band. “They’ve been around for quite a while and they are really good. I just love them,” she says. “[The bands are] so different. We wanted to bring two different styles into this concert, just to make it fun for people.” Freshwave, a non-profit group, serves about 100 people every Monday. The group recently had to

Reality to Abstraction at Gallery 1710 Current South Delta Artists Guild show tackles abstract art with an exhibit of original works NOREEN FAIRWEATHER
Optimist contributor
What exactly is abstract art? Reality we can easily understand; it has been a major focus of art since people living in caves thousands of years ago depicted their lives in natural colours on stone walls. Since then, as knowledge, techniques and science advanced artists’ capabilities, reality held in landscapes, portraits, battle scenes — until questing minds began exploring different ways of expressing artistic thought, and what we broadly term modern art, including abstraction, hit the world as it turned to the 20th century. London’s Tate Modern Museum offers a simple definition: abstract art does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. The South Delta Artists Guild is tackling abstract art with Reality to Abstraction, an exhibition of original artwork that opened yesterday. It runs through to May 29, Thursday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Gallery 1710. The exhibit is one of many guild activities this spring, including its much-anticipated annual juried Oil and Water competition, which began
back in 2004. This show is open to any artist working in any medium, and closing date for entries is midnight on Sunday. Full details on registration are available at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com. Jurors are Barrie Chadwick, Susan Cowan and Perry Haddock, signature members of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and top prize among many awards is $1,000. Oil and Water runs June 2 to 25 at Gallery 1710. Building on recent survey results and a very successful year, guild workshop committee chair Linda Bell announced plans to increase the number of workshops offered this fall, at reduced fees. And a new free evening program designed for members still working will run twice monthly, beginning Wednesday, May 11 at 7 p.m., under the leadership of Geof Hacker. Patricia Fleming, executive director of the Earthwise Society, has invited guild members who wish to work “en plein air” to bring their gear and lunch to paint rain or shine in the Earthwise Garden beginning tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The South Delta Artists Guild’s annual meeting and election of officers will be held Monday, June 6. Full details of guild activities and programs are available at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com.

Battle Royal — revisiting history in Sussex Tranquil landscape belies bloody history of battle that saw William of Normandy become king MARGARET DEEFHOLTS
W
Optimist contributor
hat could be more typically British than a cuppa tea? And, almost 1,000 years ago a break for tea (in a manner of speaking) changed the course of English history. Or so a charming little tale goes. I’m standing on a knoll in Sussex, England. It is a glorious August morning with a light breeze playing through the trees. Before me lies a tranquil Constable landscape: a field cross-stitched by hedgerows, which merges into distant woodland. The only sounds are chittering sparrows and the far-off rumble of traffic floating up from a thread-like highway. Scroll back to Oct. 14, 1066. The field in front of me was in turmoil. Norman archers spewed arrows, Saxon battle-axes flashed murderously and the thunder of cavalry hammered against the consciousness of the wounded and dying. William of Normandy was getting the worst of it. The Saxons had the advantage of being positioned on the hill (where I now stand), while the Normans on the field below were being steadily pushed back. As the day wore on, both sides were exhausted. It was a civilized thing in those days to pause to take stock and possibly nibble on some refreshments. Tea time (or its equivalent in Anglo-Saxon English) brought about a mutual lull in hostilities — or so the story goes.
That’s when William of Normandy came up with a brilliant idea. The earlier about-turn attack by the Normans had ended in near disaster for the Saxons. What if the entire Norman army on the flats at the bottom of the hill feigned retreat? The Saxons would, no doubt, pursue them, and once lured onto a level playing field (so to speak), the Normans could then do an about-face — and fight to the death. It worked. King Harold, pierced in the eye by a stray arrow, lay dead, after which Saxon morale collapsed, and William of Normandy became king of England. He was the last invader ever to successfully occupy Britain. Today, Battle, the actual site of the conflict, is a small hamlet about 15 kilometres north of the better known town of Hastings. In celebration of his victory or — depending on who you talk to — in atonement for the thousands of soldiers slain on the battlefield on that fateful day, William the Conqueror built nearby Battle Abbey. Henry VIII, who had scant patience with the Abbey’s significance, all but destroyed it in his drive to eradicate Catholicism in England in the 16th century. With the dissolution of monasteries, the Abbey church was reduced to skeletal walls and I pause to read a slab at the site of the original high altar which marked the actual spot where the Saxon king was slain. Battle’s market square outside the Abbey grounds is busy and I decide to “slake my thirst” at a medieval pub, Ye Old King’s Head, whose signpost has an artist’s impression of an impressively mustachioed King Harold. Over a shandy and a ploughman’s lunch plate, a group of locals strike up a conversation with me. They are regretful that I’ve missed the big event of the year — the twoweek Battle Festival, held either at the end of May or in early June. “It’s a grand time to visit,” one of them says. “People dress up in medieval costumes. There are
jugglers and street musicians and everyone has a jolly time.” Back on the street the weather has turned capricious. A steel-grey sky

Tomorrow’s edition of the Songwriter Café features Sara Ciantar. Recently returned to B.C. from Toronto, Ciantar has toured around the world. Always on the hunt for musical warmth and the richness of language, she presents stories that draw from a farm girl’s transition to big city and the search for home. Shea Wessler (far right) celebrates her second half free kick goal during the Tsawwassen Blues 3-2 win over Vancouver Wolf Pack in Saturday’s U17B Coastal Cup championship game in Aldergrove. MARK BOOTH m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was business as usual for one and a breakthrough for another as a pair of girls rep teams from the Tsawwassen Soccer Club celebrated Coastal Cup championships on the weekend. The ’98 Blues made it backto-back titles by capturing the U18B crown with a 3-0 win over Richmond Ravens at a sunsoaked Aldergrove Athletic Park last Saturday. Moments earlier, the ’99 Blues claimed their firstever Coastal crown with a 3-2 victory in penalty kicks against Vancouver Wolfpack. in the U17B final. Both teams will enjoy some well-deserved time off before beginning preparations for the Provincial Cup Championships, slated for early July in Penticton. The Coastal triumph continued a dominating second half of the
season for the ’98 Blues. They earlier captured the B.C. Coastal League Cup tier one final and have not lost a game in five months. The success comes at a time in youth soccer where rep teams can become vulnerable at the tier three level as players get pulled in so many directions, especially in their Grade 12 year. Yet, the Blues keep marching on. After somewhat scraping by at U17, their roster was expanded to 18 with the addition of three players from North Delta who also improved the team’s overall talent level. “A lot of the success has to do with the girls’ flexibility,” said Blues coach Lisa Bremner. “They make it work because they just love it. We typically train every Tuesday and Thursday and they try to be there as much as they can. They deserve all the credit. For the last five years, it has been
a 10-month season for them.” The Blues know all about getting ready for provincials. They will be making their fifth straight appearance in the tournament. The girls will get a month off to focus on upcoming grad events and final exams, then begin training for one final shot at provincial gold. Tsawwassen was second a year ago and also have a bronze medal. “We came close last year and it’s definitely going to be the one thing we will be focusing on,” added Bremner. “Anything can happen but it would be a great way for these girls to go out.” The ’99 Blues already knew they were headed to their first-ever Provincial Cup but were looking for more against rival Vancouver — namely two losses in the League Cup playoffs, including a 2-1 defeat in the final. Blues & Selects crowned Coastal Cup champions

Caitlin Worth fires a shot on net during the Tsawwassen Blues 3-0 win over the Richmond Ravens in the U18B Coastal Cup final on Saturday in Aldergrove.
CONTINUED from Page 26 With the teams tied at 1-1, including a goal from Shannon Wilson, Shae Wessler put the Blues in front with a 30-yard free kick to the top left corner. Just minutes away from victory, the Wolf Pack equalized when they managed to re-direct their own free kick. When overtime couldn’t break the deadlock, the teams headed to penalty kicks where the Blues promptly took control. Wilson, Wessler and Mary Berger all converted their attempts, while goalkeeper Abby Parson made two huge saves. Vancouver’s third attempt hit the crossbar, ending the drama. According to coach Richard Lowe, it’s been quite the journey over the years to achieve this breakthrough season. “There’s a lot of side stories to this with kids being injured and other stuff,” said a proud Lowe. “I told the girls they had to forget about everything else going on and tackle their challenges head on. It took an entire team effort to achieve this. “I was so impressed with how they responded after they tied the game on a soft goal. They knew exactly what they had to do.” Meanwhile, in “A” Cup action, a pair of Delta Metro Selects teams continued their outstanding seasons with victories. The Selects blanked Langley United 3-0 in the U16 boys final. Delta also took
the U15 girls crown with a 3-2 win over Richmond FC. Both teams earlier won league titles and will be looking to complete the “triple” at provincials in July where they return as defending champions. That tournament takes place in Burnaby.

OBITUARIES GRAHAM, Kathy (nee Waslander) We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Kathy due to complications from diabetes on April 26, 2016. Kathy was predeceased by her parents Steve and Tina Waslander. Left behind to mourn her loss are her devoted and loving husband Bill, 2 sons, 1 daughter, their spouses, 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 4 sisters and their families. Kathy was raised in Ladner. In 1974 Kathy, her husband and young family moved and made their home in Castlegar BC, where the family continues to reside. Kathy worked with the disabled in Castlegar and played the organ in the local church. Her life consisted of helping those in need. Kathy was a dedicated wife and mother. The joy of her life were her grandchildren and great grandchildren. We miss you Kathy. You left a big void in our lives.... “A celebration of Kathy’s life will be announced at a later date.”
We are sad to announce that Sylvia passed away after a short illness. She is predeceased (2010) by Kenneth her loving husband of 65 years, her parents Nicholas and Anna, and brothers Raymond (Irene) and Walter. She is survived by her loving sons Gary (Karen) and Brian, and we miss her greatly. Above all else in the world, Mom passionately devoted her life to the love and support of her family. Sylvia was born in Poland and came with her parents to Winnipeg at age seven. In 1940 she moved to Montreal where she met Ken and they married after the war. She loved to sing and spent many years in the church choir and as a popular leader of the ladies guild. In 1976 Sylvia and Ken retired to Ladner BC.

Sylvia was a quiet, kind and gentle person. She really enjoyed her house and home, close friends and neighbours, but had to transition to residential care a few years ago. She made some new friends and kept the old. Thanks to everyone who touched a part of her life with friendship, kindness and joy. A special thanks to the staff at KinVillage and Peace Arch Weatherby for kind and compassionate care and to Dr. Paul Dubord who kept her eye sight from failing for over twenty years.
Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
There will be a private Funeral Service at the cemetery. A Reception in her memory will be held at the family home on Saturday, May 7, 2016, 1:30 - 4:00 pm.
