Bog monitoring continues
Delta engineering director says there’s still a great deal to be learned SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a unique ecosystem that requires much work and study to ensure its preservation. Burns Bog water level and chemistry monitoring will continue this year to help develop a water balance model to show how much is entering though rainfall and how much is leaving through drainage. Delta engineering director Steven Lan said an accurate water balance model is needed to improve the municipality’s understanding of bog conditions and guide hydrology management for the future. “We want to achieve a greater understanding of what happens in this of bog environment. The number of projects being done at a university level in terms of research projects outlines the fact there’s still a great deal we can learn about the bog and how important it is in its role in the environment,” said Lan. A raised bog that’s a wetland above the regional water table, Burns Bog’s only source of water should be precipitation, but the concern has been it could dry out. In 2004, four partners — federal, provincial, regional and municipal

Delta assumed responsibility for managing its hydrology and over the years has undertaken a number of projects, including internal ditch dams to ensure the environmentally sensitive wetland doesn’t dry up.
So far, almost 240 dams have been installed and 10 to 20 more will be built this year. Meanwhile, a number of studies, including those at the university level, have taken and more are planned for 2016. In a presentation to Delta council earlier this year, urban environmental designer Sarah Howie noted, theoretically, water
could be captured from ditches and pumped back into the bog, however, last summer was a dry one and the ditches had very little water flow. Last fall, Delta staff copresented a paper at the Canadian Water Resources Association B.C. conference in Richmond, which examined how Burns Bog may be affected by climate change. The paper
also discussed how Delta is working to protect the bog from climate change by blocking ditches and managing water levels at its perimeter. According to Delta, the priority is ecological protection, not public use. Bog vegetation is highly sensitive to trampling, and peat fires can easily spark and burn underground for weeks.
Council approves revitalization bylaws JESSICA KERR
j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta council this week approved two new bylaws in an effort to stimulate growth and investment in the community. Civic politicians Monday night approved two revitalization tax exemption program bylaws — one aimed at industrial development and tourism, and the other to encourage investment in the retail and commercial centres in South Delta. The industrial development and tourism program strives to promote higher-end industrial development by offering
incentives for proposals in excess of $10 million, encourage rezoning of land to higher value industrial uses, protect the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area from development on adjacent property, and encourage diversification and expansion of tourism accommodation and facilities. The South Delta revitalization tax exemption program bylaw aims to encourage investment in new and existing retail, commercial and mixeduse projects to create a strong local economy and expand local employment opportunities, investment to enhance the
town centres of Ladner and Tsawwassen, and to preserve and enhance existing heritage buildings and developments that leverage the heritage feel of Ladner Village. This bylaw is a direct result of the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy, said Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning. The strategy was put together following extensive research by a consultant, which included consultation with Delta’s business groups. The strategy is aimed at helping the business communities in South Delta adjust
to life with the massive Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons shopping centres set to open later this year at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Coun. Sylvia Bishop said she was happy to see the incentives extended to include proposals that maintain and enhance heritage buildings. The municipality already has four similar existing bylaws, including one offering incentives for developments along Ladner’s waterfront. When questioned by Coun. Ian Paton, McGill said the lack of development along Ladner’s waterfront to date, despite
efforts by the municipality, can be blamed on the provincial government’s policy of only signing twoyear water lot leases. “It’s 100 per cent of the reason why we’re not moving forward right now,” McGill said, adding that staff are in contact with provincial staff on a weekly basis and are pushing for 30-plus year leases. Both bylaws come with tax exemptions and fee reductions if proposals fall within a certain criteria. Qualifying developments could be eligible to have property taxes frozen for up to three to five years, as well as a 60 per cent reduction in civic fees.

Getting caught reaching for that cell phone will soon cost B.C. drivers even more. The government this week announced higher fines and more penalty points in an effort to eliminate distracted driving, a leading factor in many deaths on B.C. roads. The new fines, which start June 1, begin at $368 for a first offence, which is up $200 from the current fine of $167. The fines for a first-time offence also include a $175 ICBC driver penalty point premium for a total of $543 in financial penalties for a first-time offender. Fines will increase for repeat offenders. A second offence within 12 months will net a total of $888 in fines — the $368 base fine plus a $520 penalty point premium. The government has also raised distracted driving to the threshold for high-risk driving offences,
putting it on the same level as excessive speeding and driving without due care and attention. Repeat offenders will have their driving record automatically reviewed, which could result in a driving prohibition ranging from three to 12 months, and repeat offences could mean longer prohibitions. Drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program face intervention after a first offence and a possible driving prohibition of up to six months. Delta Police Chief Neil Dubord, who is also chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police traffic safety committee, said this is one of two priorities the committee is working on with the province. “I definitely think it will help,” he said of the new, higher fines, adding that it seems like a large number of drivers still aren’t getting the message that distracted driving is dangerous. “It still is the number
two killer, reasons for deaths, on our roads.” “Distracted driving, like drinking and driving, is entirely avoidable, yet too often has devastating consequences,” Mike Morris, B.C.’s Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, said this week. “Since 2010, when we introduced tough, immediate sanctions for drinking and driving, we’ve seen a dramatic decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities.” The latest statistics, from 2014, show 66 deaths and 630 serious injuries in crashes where distracted and inattentive driving was a contributing factor. Over the past three years, approximately 50,000 distracted driving tickets have been issued annually. Here in Delta, officers have issued a total of 3,610 distracted driving tickets since the law was established in 2011. So far in 2016, officers have already issued 249 tickets to distracted drivers.

Volunteers with the Delta Hospital Foundation and Delta Hospital Auxiliary celebrated the opening of a new preadmission clinic for surgical daycare Tuesday. Members of both community fundraising groups were on hand at the hospital’s new medical area, where patients will be screened and assessed before their surgeries, to thank all those who made the latest addition possible. Delta Hospital currently has three operating rooms and an endoscopy suite that support more than 5,000 surgical procedures
each year, including, based on 2014 figures, 165 emergency surgeries and elective surgeries such as hip and knee repairs In addition, a new orthopedic/cast clinic and a formal short-stay/ observation surgical area are also being added to the hospital. Meanwhile, work on the next phase of the hospital’s master plan is already underway. Approved in 2012, it’s a vision of services and amenities for the hospital for the next 20 years. Already approved, the first phase, starting this year, is construction of the new Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building.
It was made possible following successful fundraising by the foundation and auxiliary. A business case is now being put together for the next phase, a replacement for the Mountain View Manor seniors’ care facility. The foundation notes the current building “is in desperate need of an expansion and upgrade” and that the “age and layout of this facility has slowed further improvements in patient care, innovation, and enhancements to services.” It’s also being called a long overdue project that will provide aging residents the opportunity to stay in their community.

he real estate market is on steroids and Delta’s planning efforts need to catch up. Rarely can a day or two go by without hearing, “Did you see what they’re asking for that place?” or “Did you hear how much they got for that one?” Today’s sky high prices are making a lot of homeowners a lot of money while rapidly increasing the number of people that are being priced out of the market. What it’s also doing is putting pressure on the plans local government has drawn up over the years, documents that have utilized the collective wisdom of the public to determine how our communities should evolve. There will always be pressure from developers to push the envelope when it comes to these plans, but as the demand for land escalates, so too does the desire to maximize its value, which is creating unprecedented stress on the system. Check out the real estate ads these days and you’ll see countless examples, some more overt than others, of the potential opportunities to reshape neighbourhoods that were largely developed a half-century ago. Whether it’s replacing one house with two or three or turning a strip of older, strategically placed homes into townhouses, or even condos, there are all kinds of possibilities out there. There’s no doubt this type of redevelopment was going to take place over time, but with a trickle-down effect from the big city accelerating prices at an absurd pace, it’s happening, or at least trying to happen, right now. Do we want townhouses or condos where single-family homes now stand? Do we desire lots so narrow you have step outside to stretch your arms? Will we accept greater density if it helps keep prices down? There are all sorts of questions that need answers in this supercharged market, and not just on an ad hoc basis when a developer comes forward with a specific proposal. Rising prices will continue to place demands on our neighbourhoods so we’ve got to be ready to meet them head on. I can’t blame homeowners for trying to cash in, but when they attempt to do so we’ve got to make sure it’s done in an orderly fashion. Good planning has created a most enviable place to live, but that can change in the blink of an eye if we’re not prepared for what’s coming our way.
Food Revolution Day aims to promote healthy eating habits
N
ext Friday is Food Revolution Day. The Jamie Oliver Foundation came up with the idea a few years ago and its main goal is to have children from all over the world partake in meals that have been designed around chef Oliver’s nutritional recipes. The foundation has long tentacles around the globe and has corporate support from many large multi-nationals. A resonating theme within the foundation is to reduce the amount of exposure to sugar in a typical western child’s diet and to reduce the alarming and growing rate of childhood obesity. Recently, and after much lobbying, the foundation achieved a milestone in British parliament. In 2018 a “sugary tax bill” will be introduced in the United Kingdom. The tax is expected to raise close to a billion dollars which would go back in to the school system to promote nutritional health and education about food and cooking within the school environment. The idea of a sugar tax has been bandied about in various North American jurisdictions for quite a while and it is time that governments sharpened their pencils and took a look at how the benefits of such a tax could take pressure off our medical system. Dietary life lessons are best learned at home, but increasingly, the school environment is playing
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
a key role in providing access to knowledge about food and good eating habits. In the United States and in Great Britain, school cafeterias are common place and have been the distribution point for many national nutritional health plans. More often than not though, many inner city schools that have good intentions in these settings, lose out on the home front when good eating strategies bow to socio-economic realities. This is where the price/quantity boondoggle raises its ugly head. Left with little choice, some families have to resort to the couple of litres of $1 pop and some $5 dollar frozen pizza for the dinner table. This path to poor food choice is not just price driven. Working parents are taxed for time and energy and sometimes convenience trumps common sense. Imagine how these circumstances
subliminally impact our kids and imagine how they will affect choices for their families in the future. To break away from this unfortunate cycle, parents, educators, school districts and governments have to do a better job of promoting nutritional health frameworks to steer children in the right direction. In the grand scheme of things, we are lucky here in Delta in that our school district is supporting programs related to nutritional health. By next week, and to celebrate Food Revolution Day, hundreds of local young farmers will have planted over 1,000 cucumber seeds. Meanwhile, they have been snacking on salads with veggies they have grown, are growing, and will be growing over the coming weeks. We have been calling these sessions tailgate parties as the salads are dished out from the back of my truck. A recent session at a local school was both delightful and disturbing. A couple dozen kids chowed their fruits and veggies but there were several of them who clearly needed food. They were hungry. I’m talking real hunger. If you have school aged children, let’s make an effort to appreciate what they need next week and always. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He was named as a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Port should implement real change Editor: Port Metro Vancouver has a fiduciary responsibility to use their port land efficiently but when it comes to sharing the wealth they do not seem to be interested. On any day you can see containers stacked to the sky on port properties and if just a small portion of those containers where moved by train to an inland terminal like the Ashcroft terminal we would have less incentive to destroy farm land. PMV bought the Gilmore farms in Richmond as a study area
because it was next door to industrial land. In my opinion, the richest farm land in Canada cannot become warehouses. The Ashcroft terminal is 340 kilometres away and they have both the CN and CP lines running though their 320 acres. If containers where removed directly from the ships to trains, there would be less trucks on the road, less pollution and less motivation for speculators to buy farm land. The inland shipping option works because the rail lines have direct
links to the East Coast, America and the Gulf of Mexico. Would we need the $3.5 billion mega Massey bridge if 10 per cent of trucks were off the road and rail cars where used instead? Ports all over the world have options to use inland shipping and many are taking advantage of using those facilities for sorting and moving containers. The creator of FedEx came up with the idea, to use a central location for distribution of goods and years later it has proven to be a successful business model.
The more we learn about the options available to move our goods and keep Canada economically healthy the more we realize that getting creative, sharing the business and working to create partnerships will be the future. I just wish Port Metro Vancouver spent less time trying to re-brand themselves and instead implemented real change with modern solutions for a more positive future that put as much important on being able to feed ourselves as the all mighty dollar. More ‘national’ solitudes being legitimized
Editor: Re: Not independent nations, letter to the editor, May 4 When on November 22, 2006 the House of Commons overwhelmingly passed a motion recognizing Québécois as a nation, Canada officially sanctioned ethnicity as a defining element of what constitutes a nation. Within a self-imposed country-wide setting of bilingualism and legislated
multi-culturalism, we are confronted with the challenges of meeting growing and increasingly militant demands for special “national” status from 625 aboriginal First Nations communities. Indeed, we have condemned ourselves to forever grappling with what has become Canada’s overriding political syndrome of how many separate “nations” we can accommodate in our
very own matryoshka doll and still remain a distinct nation. How many nations are there in Canada’s matryoshka doll? While the concept of “civic nationalism” is based on the notion of “One Nation – Indivisible,” in which the state derives its political legitimacy from the active participation of all its citizenry, Canada’s “ethnic nationalism” has fragmented the

Editor: People who own and love their dogs must feel as we once did. They are your friend, or pal maybe, or just part of your family. Dogs live your life with you. A chastisement with a raised voice will do the
trick. Remember that your dog loves you with all their heart. SPECULATING ABOUT FARMLAND With prices driven higher, agricultural land has become out of reach Sandor Gyarmati I sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Agricultural Land Reserve has protected farmland but it hasn’t necessarily kept prices low so farmers can afford to purchase plots.

eal estate speculators and foreign buyers are pricing farmland in Delta and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland out of reach, says a Ladner woman who warns it spells bad news for the future of farming. Jennifer Grenz used to farm on a rented plot in Richmond and wants to get back into the business in her new hometown. She has written to Delta council and others hoping for action when it comes to buyers purchasing farmland as an investment to flip or hoping for changes in the agricultural zoning. An agrologist, Grenz is concerned land that’s not being farmed will continue to escalate in value, something the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) was originally intended to prevent. Grenz said she has seen, as well as been told by farmers and local realtors, that foreign buyers, including Chinese buyers in real estate tour buses, are eyeing prime agricultural land with no intention to farm. The B.C. Agriculture Council has no official position on foreign ownership of farmland, but Grenz believes it needs to be examined as well as what’s required to uphold the original purpose of the ALR. “The ALR was designed to protect farmland and one of those protections was to keep the price reasonable, but in this new market I don’t think the ALR is protecting us from that problem anymore,” she said. “I think the government needs to look at what it can do with that designation to adapt to the current market. “In the current market, you have people looking to invest large sums of money on behalf of investors or a single investor who is not engaged in agriculture, but they’re looking safe, long-term investment. So if you have a $5 million property and want to store your money safely, you can do that. Further to that, you’re eroding the value of that agriculturally zoned land because if it doesn’t get farmed for 10 or 15 years, if they want to rezone it because they can say it’s not useful.” Unlike some provinces that have restrictions, B.C. has no limits on foreign ownership of farmland, including land in the protected ALR. Uses of those lands are regulated by the Agricultural Land Commission. When it comes to speculators owning farmland in Delta, it’s a concern that dates back many years. In 1969, for example, Murray Davie, chair of the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s agriculture committee, compiled a report suggesting the formation of a regional farm district four years before the NDP government introduced the Agricultural Land Reserve.
This parcel of Delta farmland is being marketed as an investment property.
His report pointed out that over 2,000 acres involving 20 farms in Delta were owned by “foreign” syndicates, while over 1,300 acres were either held for speculation by B.C. investors or metropolitan developers seeking subdivision approvals. “It’s safe to assume that the future potential of agriculture in Delta is in jeopardy,” Davie was quoted as saying in 1969. When the ALR was introduced in 1973, New Democrat MLA Carl Liden explained it was necessary because speculators owned most of the farmland in Delta. He said the government was helping the farmer with the legislation because “this bill will keep farmland prices down to where farmers can afford to buy farmland for farming. It will stop farmers from leaving their lands.” Fast-forward to 2013 and a Metro Vancouver survey found 28 per cent of farmland in Richmond, Delta, Langley, Surrey and Barnston Island was identified as not being in agriculture production, even though it had the potential for farming. The survey also concluded the situation will not change “without some significant intervention.” At the time, long-time Richmond farmer and city councillor Harold Steves, one of the architects of the ALR, warned how some investors are allowing their land to get overgrown and fallow so they can claim their properties are no longer suitable for agriculture.
– Jennifer Grenz I Agrologist
“
The ALR was designed to protect farmland and one of those protections was to keep the price reasonable, but in this new market I don’t think the ALR is protecting us from that problem anymore.
Delta CAO George Harvie that year noted most of the properties he investigated were foreign owned in what appeared to be a form of landbanking. The Corporation of Delta looked into how many local farms were allowed to go fallow either because of foreign ownership or inactive farming, but Delta farmers said the issue appeared overblown. According to Delta’s latest Agricultural Profile, the municipality’s agricultural sector is unique. Its commercial farms are among the largest in size in the Lower Mainland and make use of a high level of land leasing in their operations. Several factors are conspiring to challenge the sector, however, including “a growing population is competing with farmers for farmland for rural-residential purposes, creating non-agricultural competition for farmland in its wake.” The Corporation of Delta has taken measures as a local government to protect farmland, including maintaining its policy to generally not permit lot splitting because smaller parcels are viewed as less viable. A few years ago Delta also took the lead to prevent buyers from purchasing farmland as a cheap place to build mansions, limiting house sizes and defining a farm “home plate” on agricultural properties. The municipality also has new soil bylaws aimed at preventing farm properties from being used as dump sites for construction and other waste. However, those measure don’t mean those lands can’t be purchased for speculation, something that can be seen with the much talked about options made for hundreds of acres of prime South Delta farmland by an industrial real estate developer. Those lands would have to go through what certainly would be a contentious application to be pulled out of the ALR, though. Responding to Grenz’s letter to council, Coun. Ian Paton, a Ladner farmer himself, said Delta has done all it can, and continues to do what it’s able to do, to keep farmland farmed. He said speculators are nothing new when it comes to farmland here. “She (Grenz) is frustrated with the fact she’s unable to afford some farmland to do a bit of farming in Delta, but I can tell you that just about every farmer in Delta would also like to be able to purchase farmland to expand their farming operations,” Paton said. “She has suggested mayor and council has done nothing to alleviate the fact that farmland in Delta is going up in value, but I really don’t know what a mayor and municipal council can do about the price of farmland… when I was a kid growing up in East Delta, there’s been land speculated upon, ever since the early 1960s,” he said. “On 88th Street in Delta, we had at least two pieces of property, big farms that we always wondered who owned. Some of the old-timers will remember a fellow named David Burr, who was a property manager and he went around and managed properties throughout Delta that were owned by foreign owners who lived in different parts of the world. When they finally realized that the Agriculture Land Reserve came into being, they basically had no choice and sold those farms to Delta farmers and they are owned now fee simple.” Paton noted the ALR is still considered sacred and that Delta leads all municipalities in actively farming those lands as well as ranking highest in leased lands. “I can say, from my experience in Delta, any land that may be owned by a foreign owner or speculator, a hundred per cent of that land is actively leased out to farmers who want that land. So I don’t see any land that is being purchased by speculators and sitting idle.” Grenz said she’s disappointed with his response, noting it’s an issue that should have at least gone to the civic agriculture advisory committee for discussion. She said there are many things Delta can try as a local government. “He says 81 per cent of ALR land in Delta is farmed and that’s fabulous. This is not a criticism of Delta but this is a warning if you want to maintain those fabulous statistics that differentiate us from Richmond, for example, we need to make sure we’re not putting our heads in the sand,” she said. Grenz said she looked at one Arthur Drive non-agricultural property for potential high-intensity farming and was surprised to see its price shoot up over $700,000 in a short time. She said she was also looking at land that she was told was hopefully going to be rezoned into industrial for the future. “How can you com-
May 13, 2016 The Delta Optimist A13 pete with that?” she asked. “I was also told that real estate prices are going up, but agricultural land was never meant to be keeping up with the residential market and the increases are almost the same.” Melanie Tennant, director of research for the Real Estate Investment Network, said an increasing trend is people selling their pricey homes in Metro Vancouver and buying small hobby farms, generally under 10 acres, further out, although that’s not the case here. Not everyone is selling and moving to grow carrots, but there is a widening gap of what someone can get outside of Vancouver versus Metro Vancouver, she said.
As far as Ladner and Tsawwassen, because it’s part of Metro Vancouver, the land and house values are still extremely high comparatively, so there is not a lot of spread in selling in Vancouver and buying in Ladner. “People are moving rurally and outside of the Metro Vancouver boundaries - think Chilliwack, the islands, north and northeast B.C. Additionally, people are not generally buying large operational farms like we see in Ladner; but rather small hobby farms with plans for some chickens, a cow and veggies,” Tennant explained. “Some are even just purchasing larger estate-type properties with no intention of pursuing any type of agriculture. They are purchasing more square footage and more land for half the price or less than their Metro Van homes.” The expansion of the Port Mann Bridge and Highway 1 has played a major role in increasing demand for farm properties out in the Langley and Abbotsford region and Ladner and Tsawwassen will receive that increase in demand after the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel is completed, she added.

The South Delta Probus Club will get a little history lesson at this month’s meeting. The meeting is set for 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 18 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. This month’s speaker is author Peter Johnson, who will be taking about the bride ships — the mass exodus of four ship loads of women, British teen orphans and older single gentlewomen, to British Columbia that began in 1862. He will talk about the conditions that lead to the situation — labour disruptions, poor prospects beyond marriage of well-educated gentle-
women, bachelor gold miners on B.C.’s frontier, the conflicting aims of English emigration societies, the role of the Anglican church and the rise of feminism — the voyage overseas and what happened to these women, and the role they played in shaping the province’s history, once they arrived in Victoria. Johnson will present his talk and them engage participation in order for the audience to appreciate the many hardships that the women endured. This proud tradition of fundraising will continue on May 24 when the club will host a special choral concert at South Delta Secondary’s Equinox Theatre, starting at 7:30 p.m. Guest artists for the evening, West Vancouver’s Pandora’s Vox women’s vocal ensemble, directed by Gillian Hunt, are returning after their warmly received performance here in 2014. “With an eclectic and creative style, the charismatic VOX sings with a vocal virtuosity that encompasses a surprising range of repertoire,” the group’s website notes. The South Delta Big Quiz Night is coming back for round two at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen next Saturday. Teams of four will test their knowledge once again with 10 different topics at the second edition of the event organized by Ivor Hewitt. There will be four new categories, he notes. They include Name that Tune, Astronomy and Space,
Flags and Emblems, and Pop Music. “Everyone seemed to want a Name that Tune round,” Hewitt says. The first quiz night, held in January, had nearly 20 teams take part and went very well, he says. The team that won, The Infomaniacs, are returning to compete in the second event. People who aren’t part of a team are welcome to take part on their own or just come and watch, he explains.
“Individuals are very welcome to come along and do the quiz themselves,” he notes. The quiz night is scheduled for Saturday, May 21 at KinVillage Community Centre, 5430-10th Ave., Tsawwassen. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The quiz will start at 7 p.m. It costs $40 for a team of four. The cost includes snacks. Drop by KinVillage or call 604-943-0225 to enter a team. Proceeds from the quiz go to KinVillage.

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
There are a few things that can frustrate me. Slow internet speed, no access to WiFi, sale items at grocery stores that are sold out, traffic, weeds (I hate gardening), and even Facebook frustrates me when they change their algorithms — yet again! As I have gotten older technology, and such, is frustrating me at faster pace than it used. People, however, aren’t. With age I am finding I actually have greater patience with clients and individuals than I ever
have had before. That is until they do this: They head out of town for a vacation, or a business trip, or because of family matters, and they leave their home and their runners behind. They decide that because they are “away” they don’t need to maintain their fitness and health program. I’m not quite sure why they do this. I have heard a variety of excuses, though. For instance: I didn’t have time, there wasn’t a gym, or my personal favourite, I never workout when I’m away. It baffles me that people would consciously and purposely lose the strength, flexibility and aerobic capacity that they have just spent the last nine to 10 months working so hard to get. Because you will lose it. Your aerobic fitness will start to diminish in as little as seven to 14 days. As for those muscles

that you have been working so hard to build, in the most drastic scenario studies have shown that you can lose as much as 80 per cent of your strength and tone in as little as two weeks. Eighty per cent! That’s a big loss. For the more deconditioned individual, you will lose even more with any hiatus. Studies have followed new exercisers as they began an exercise program and then stopped it and found that after two months of quitting their new-found fitness program they had lost all of their original gains. They were back to square one again. Fit people — your outcome is not as bad, but it is still worrisome. After two months off your program it is estimated that you will lose about 30 per cent of your gains. The question then begs to be asked — how long will it take to get it all back then? Researchers say that is hard to predict, but for

bove the shoreline of a sheltered cove stands a row of totems. They lean, crumbling with age but with still discernible details. Carved more than 100 years ago, their faces stare out to sea and their symbolism reaches across the ages in a mystical way. After decades of talking about visiting Haida Gwaii, Gary and I finally stand amongst the poles at one of the most sacred sites in these islands, SGaang Gwaay Llnagaay. We have but a short week for exploring some of the natural and cultural treasures on this remote archipelago off the northern coast of British Columbia. The morning of our SGang Gwaay expedition dawns clear and calm. Perfect for the hour and a half float plane ride south, over lushly forested islands surrounded by brilliant blue waters, to Rose Harbour. After don-
ning survival suits, we have a half hour bouncy zodiac ride to SGang Gwaay or Anthony Island. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to one of the best examples of a traditional coastal First Nations village site. We meet Ken, one of the Haida Watchmen who act as guardians at the ancient sites during the summer. He relates the legends of the animal, human and mythic figures while we wander amongst the mortuary and memorial poles of the village. Taller memorial poles commemorate an ancestor. Mortuary poles were carved to honour a chief or dignitary upon their passing and held bent wood boxes with their remains. It is said their spirit stays with the pole until it falls. Many moss covered mounds hint at poles reclaimed by the forest. I stand on the beach imagining how attractive the village must have looked so long ago. The row of mortuary poles fronted a line of cedar houses, each with a frontal pole;

draped forest and view the felled Golden Spruce tree. The tree was revered by islanders and is the stuff of legends for the Haida. It was much mourned when it was cut down as a protest against logging. There is not much to see of the dead tree but the living ones along the winding path are humongous and filter the sunlight. It feels like we are walking in fairy tale woods. Our cultural experiences continue at a traditional Haida dinner at Keenawaii’s Kitchen. We sit family style at a long table by windows overlooking the water. Appetizers include Sguu (dried seaweed), dried K’aaw (herring eggs on kelp) and Gilgii (dried salmon) artistically served on a scallop shell. Almost everything Roberta serves is either caught, foraged or grown on Haida Gwaii. The tangy wild cranberry sauce is made from the berries she painstakingly picked one by one. Young helpers from the village serve up crab, salad, salmon,
venison, vegetables and dessert. The evening concludes with some haunting traditional Haida songs, accompanied solely by a drum. Fancy feasting calls for walking and the expansive beaches like the ones we see from the viewpoints on Tow Hill beckon. While walking near the Tlell River on East Beach, one of the longest beaches in North America, we meet a local who says he often has this strand all to himself. From where we stand, we cannot see anyone else but spy the far distant tip of Rose Spit. We could walk there along the beach but from here it would take at least four days. As a parting gift, he hands me a handful of agates he collected on his walk. For these, and all our experiences this week, I say “Haaw’a, Haida Gwaii! Thriving and Surviving Program for cancer survivors and their families
The University of Victoria Self-Management B.C. office in Ladner is a hub of activity as they roll out a new province-wide self-management program for cancer survivors and their families called Cancer: Thriving and Surviving. Surviving cancer is a victory, yet many people find the time after treatment is different than what they expected. It can be difficult to make sense of how cancer has affected and changed them. Along with a renewed outlook on life, the feeling that one has been given a second chance, there may be pain or scars from treatment, changed relationships, a sense of distress over what has happened, or possibly worry about the cancer coming back. It is a time of adjustment, taking care of oneself, and finding a new “normal.” This is part of recovery, and it may take more time than expected. The Cancer: Thriving
and Surviving SelfManagement Program was developed at Stanford University by Dr. Kate Lorig, a cancer survivor herself. It was designed for people who are living with cancer or have been affected by cancer. The program is facilitated by two trained peer leaders and teaches skills to help manage one’s health after cancer treatment, as well as offering valuable support on getting back to an active and fulfilling life. “There is a belief that when you have cancer, a year later you’re fine. In reality, you might be cancer-free, but you’re different. Lots of people get stopped by that when objectively there is no reason they can’t get on with their lives,” Lorig says. Kin Village Community Centre in Tsawwassen will be one of the first to host this new program starting May 18. This workshop is open to the public, and like all
UVic self-management workshops, there is no cost to attend, but you must register through the UVic Ladner office at 604-9401273, or at www.selfmanagementbc.ca. The class will meet weekly for 2.5 hours to discuss topics such as fatigue, pain, poor sleep and living with uncertainty. Participants will learn skills for problem solving, setting priorities, and communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals. All participants will receive the companion book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions. The Ladner office, formerly known as the UVic Centre on Aging, is now the UVic Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, a name change that emphasizes lifelong processes that influence health and well-being across the lifespan. Self-Management B.C. is supported by Province of British Columbia.

A couple weeks ago, a Princeton University professor, who has an impressive resume of degrees, positions and awards, published a “CV of Failures.” In it he listed degree programs he was not accepted into, jobs that he applied for and didn’t get, awards and scholarships he was refused, and academic articles that were rejected. It went viral — so much so that he added another failure to the end of the list: “This darn CV of Failures has received way more attention than my entire body of academic work.” It was shared on social media and featured on newscasts. There is something oddly encouraging about reading of someone else’s failures. It makes them

Minister’s Minute
The Apostle Paul, after a particularly rough time, reflected on how God was working in his life. Thinking back on what he had learned, he wrote: “But (God) said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 14:9-10, NIV) Sufficient grace; strength in weakness. This is the most important lesson we can learn from failure. Contact Mike at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian crisis and world wide problem. Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org) calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency to be no less than $9 billion annually.

A Creighton University study showed that people rich in Vitamin D have up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk. The Canadian Pediatric Society recommended that pregnant women consult their physicians about getting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times the current government recommendations.
The Canadian Cancer Society has called for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily. The key message the Vitamin D Society wants Canadians to receive is: that we are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because of our country’s relatively weak sunshine most of the year and the fact that Vitamin D is rare in diet. With thanks to the Vitamin D Society for this info, who incidentally recommends asking your doctor for an annual blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

The first thing to understand is that u.v. whether from the sun or bulbs is the same. A photon of light is a photon of light. There is no magic change to make a sunbed more risky than the solar uv light. Our sunbeds provide a U.V. spectrum similar to solar uv at noon - 95% UVA and 5% UVB, the strength of the dose may be stronger but the duration is shorter which is why you don’t burn if a sunbed is used properly. In fact cancer care Ontario, in a 2013 report on ultraviolet radiation reported that the melanoma risk for outdoor exposure was 61% versus 15% for indoor devices when used properly. So based on this research, using a sunbed is 4 times less risky than outdoor sun exposure. That is certainly a different message than what is often reported for the risk of indoor sunbed use. Is there a “hidden agenda”? - just

From my first class with Anne, my activity without pain has improved massively. Where walking would cause me pain, I am now climbing stairs pain free. I now look forward to activities that I used to avoid because of the pain. My posture has improved and I feel that I am on a path to a stronger healthier me.

See www.tanresponsibly.ca for a complete set of standards. Our staff have been trained extensively in North American standards. Our clients tell us a “base tan” before their holidays and summer works for them. Is this “No U.V. light message the same as : Don’t use salt! To quickly be replaced by “oh a little salt is o.k.” or don’t use butter to be replaced later by “oh a little butter is good for you” or red wine is bad to soon be replaced by “a little red wine is good for our digestion.” Or “Don’t eat red meat or too much fat” to be replaced by, (Front Page April 3, 2016 Province) “We should be eating more fat and red meat.” How long do we have to wait before we are told oh! By the way we do need U.V. light in healthy moderate doses? With all these second thoughts are we finally getting real? Are we being lead by the nose? -

High scoring and thrilling finishes maybe exciting for the fans but not for a coach trying to take the Delta Islanders where they have never gone before. The Islanders made it four wins in five games out of the gate with a wild 16-15 triumph over the New Westminster Salmonbellies on Tuesday night at Queen’s Park Arena. Delta is averaging 13 goals per game and features the top two scorers in the B.C. Junior Junior Lacrosse League in Tre Leclaire and Evan Messenger, with 31 and 25 points respectively. If that’s not enough, Chase Fraser and Jon Phillips have returned from U.S. college ball and provide even more scoring punch. Fraser has 11 points in just two games, while Phillips had four goals in his season debut against the Bellies. However, all is not well at the other end of the floor. The Islanders are surrendering nearly as many goals as they have scored (64-62) and have already racked up a whopping 144 penalty minutes — 74 more than the next highest team in the league (Victoria 70). “I might just be the most unhappiest 4-1 coach in league history,” joked head coach Greg Rennie. “Our goaltending is not good
Homegrown standout Evan Messenger is second in league scoring for the 4-1 Delta Islanders. enough right now and we are playing undisciplined lacrosse, taking far too many penalties, especially in the attacking zone. I’m not impressed at all. “We are never going to beat the top teams playing this way.” Rennie has already benched players for unnecessary penalties or poor play and says he will have even more options with veterans Reece Callies and Jayden Campbell set to rejoin the team. The Islanders had all kinds of trouble with the Langley Thunder in their home opener last Saturday,
needing a seven point night from LeClaire and a shorthanded third period goal from Fraser to help pull out a 13-11 win. Tuesday’s win was hardly a goaltending clinic as Ryland Hood struggled with a .706 save percentage while the New West goaltenders combined to allow 16 goals on just 41 shots. “Fortunately, their guys were struggling more,” added Rennie. “Ryland is battling a knee injury right now but knows he can play better. He has to.” The Isles did get a glimpse of
the league’s best goaltender when Christian Del Bianco limited them to just four goals on 36 shots in an 8-4 loss last week to the defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs. The Islanders led 3-2 after 20 minutes but didn’t score again until Messenger found the net with 5:33 remaining. Delta has a home-and-home series with Nanaimo (1-3) starting Saturday (5 p.m.) at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The games will take place over eight days giving Rennie quality practice time to get his players firing on all cylinders.
Ice Hawks likely staying in Ladner for now MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
One of Delta Ice Hawks biggest wins in their 19-year history may have come at municipal hall. At last month’s Delta parks and recreation commission meeting, Ice Hawks owner Wes Mussio pleaded his case on why the junior “B” hockey team should be able to continue playing out of the Ladner Leisure Centre for the coming season. It was back in March, the commission recommended the Ice
Hawks not have their seasonto-season contract with Delta renewed to free up more time for youth user groups for the next three-year ice allocation. However, Mussio told the commission the Ice Hawks should be not be classified as a non-Delta/ commercial group but rather an organized youth sports ice user — pointing to the team always having several local teens on its roster. He said the club would only require ice time for one home game each week and two practice
slots would be moved to the Great Pacific Forum for the coming season. Mussio added it was too late for the team to find an arena elsewhere for the 2016-17 campaign. The commission agreed and said the decision needed to be revisited. A motion was passed for the Ice Hawks’ contract for a three-hour game slot be extended one further year. The agreement would then be looked at again no later than November, giving the Ice Hawks
adequate time to find a new home should the contract not be renewed or if they even wish to re-locate. Mussio met with the Delta parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz last week where the home game ice time for the 2016-17 season was further discussed. It is expected to be finalized at next week’s parks and recreation commission meeting and presented to council at the end of the month as part of the new threeyear ice allocation for main user groups.

Golden run for U16 Seaside Surf
Second best in the West
MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta Gymnastics Conor Edgson won a silver medal on rings in the National Open Division at last weekend’s Western Canada Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The meet was one of three competitions hosted by Delta at the Oval.
It’s next stop Calgary for the Seaside Surf boys volleyball team that dominated last week’s B.C. U16 Club Championships from start-to-finish. With a roster featuring six local players and Delta Pacers senior boys coach Jay Tremonti serving as an assistant, the South Surrey based club didn’t drop a single set en route to provincial gold. That has been the story all season as Seaside has competed mainly against U18 opposition then promptly taken care of U16 teams when they do drop back down to their own age group. The Surf went 3-0 in round-robin play and completed the provincial run with three more wins in the tier one playoffs, capped by a rather easy 25-14 and 25-15 victory over Vancouver’s Apex Massive in the championship match. Now it’s off to Calgary, May 21-23 for the U16 West Nationals.
After a dominating run at provincials, Seaside Surf will be looking for more success at the U16 Nationals in Calgary, May 21-23. “The key thing about our season and our run to gold has been the competitive nature of our practices,” explained Seaside head coach Dave Dooley. “We have 13 players on our roster, as well as one ‘red-shirt,’ and guys are constantly being pushed to improve. “In fact, the last practice before (provincials) we played a wash drill that was fiercely contested, and the ‘starting’ players ended up losing to the ‘bench’ guys, an amazing reality check before the championship!” Seaside’s roster is rep-
resented by eight different schools — Delta, Earl Marriott, Semiahmoo, Elgin Park, Walnut Grove, Burnsview, Pacific Academy and Gabrielle Roy. The core has been playing together for about four years. The players include: Kevin Stewart, Michael Dowhaniuk, Jordan Payne, Hugh Brown, Andres Barrero, Keatan Mann, Teo Ardanaz, Evan Hixt, Markus Niebuhr, Greg Moore, Malachi McMullin, Adam Paige and Sam McPherson. “Equally important has
been the depth of our roster and the ability of players to assume different roles,” added Dooley. “This truly makes us a team not only of six on the floor, but a team of six on the floor with seven on the bench supporting from the sidelines and ready to step in at any point to get a job done. Many of the matches in the championship saw me using up to eight of my 12 allowed substitutions, ensuring that all 13 players stayed well-rested. “It’s been a great season so far, with one more goal yet to be achieved.”
