Dogs falling ill to mystery meat
Officials still trying to determine origin of rotten food at North 40 off-leash park in East Ladner SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i k i s t .c o m
The mystery meat could have been bad news for Walter. That’s what worried Ladner resident Sandy Hodge last month after taking her dog
Walter, a four-year-old whoodle, to roam at the popular North 40 off-leash park. Like other dogs that enjoy running around the former Vancouver Wireless Station site in East Ladner, the normally well-behaved Walter had run off and eaten an entire
bag of strange meat. Since the dog already has health issues, Hodge didn’t want to risk Walter becoming violently ill, so acted quickly to take him to a local vet to induce vomiting. “Whatever it was, the vet said that it was rotten,” said Hodge.
Speculation includes photographers wanting good wildlife shots bringing bags of meat to entice eagles, but there’s also the possibility eagles themselves are retrieving bags of rotting food from the nearby landfill. MEAT: see Page 3
“I haven’t taken him back there since and it’s a shame because he really loved it.” Hodge’s concern has been echoed by other dog owners recently when it comes to strange bags of meat reportedly discovered at the off-leash park.

Attractions include live stage entertainment, craft fair, petting zoo and pony rides, paddle boats, food vendors, beer garden and more. This year’s parade, set for
Sunday at noon, has a slightly revised route due to road work in Ladner Village. The theme for the procession this time is Our Community in the Future. “I think we’ll have some inter-

Balance needed: port CEO
Robin Silvester says trade, environment and communities must be considered SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s all about achieving an important balance. That was the theme Vancouver Fraser Port Authority president and CEO Robin Silvester conveyed during a presentation to the Delta Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. The luncheon at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn was an opportunity to hear how Delta is viewed as vital in Canada’s growing trade as well as the port’s plans to build a second container terminal at Roberts Bank. Silvester said it’s been determined that even after current facilities are maximized, Terminal 2 will still be needed. “You can see that strong growth with the port, 30 million tonnes of growth in the last five years. Put that in context: 30 million tonnes is the volume handled by the Port of Montreal in a year, which is the second largest port in Canada. Thirty million tonnes is close to what Westshore (Terminals) will be handling in one terminal here in Delta. So we’ve already grown in this region, this gateway, at the size of the second largest port in Canada,” Silvester

Seated with Delta Chamber of Commerce executive director Tom Awrey, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority president and CEO Robin Silvester (right) answers questions during a chamber luncheon in Tsawwassen Tuesday. said. “As we look forward, we see the opportunity to have the same amount of growth again, another 30 million tonnes.” He said a considerable amount of environmental work has gone into studying the project, which has found there won’t be significant adverse environmental effects. Those findings will be defensible once the application is brought forward to a
review panel, Silvester said. Going over several of the port’s environmental initiatives, Silvester noted a lot of work has gone into defining what a sustainable gateway should be all about, which he called a balancing act. He said the three core components to balance are economic prosperity through trade, healthy environment and thriving communities. Regarding talk of an
inland port as an alternative, Silvester said his port authority is open to anything that helps facilitate the smooth movement of goods, but it’s also the market that will decide. Looking forward to potential infrastructure dollars from the new federal government to facilitate the movement of goods, Silvester added the reality is that Roberts Bank is the best location for a second terminal.
During the questionand-answer session, Silvester touched on a variety of topics, including responding to questions from those from Richmond who demanded to know what the port had in store for Gilmore Farm on No. 8 Road. Silvester reiterated how there’s an alarming shortage of industrial land in the region and that the port might one day be forced to covert the property. However, he noted there’s “no master plan” to convert farmland, adding the port is seeking a “better conversation” on how to balance the needs of the environment, farmland and the national economy. Silvester talked about the port’s wholehearted support for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project and the backing it found for it on both sides of the river, adding a federal environmental review would be up to Ottawa. Asked about the controversial Fraser Surrey Docks plan to ship American thermal coal, Silvester noted it’s not up to the port to come up with trade policy but to facilitate trade, adding that project has undergone an environmental review.
Meat could be used to bait birds or salvaged from landfill CONTINUED from Page 1 Saying it would be illegal for anyone to bring in bags of meat to try to bait birds, Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment, isn’t ruling anything out, but noted the North 40 is heavily used by eagles and it’s possible they’re transporting the food from elsewhere, including the landfill, farmland and prey they’ve captured. Delta Community
Animal Shelter manager Sarah Jones recently issued an advisory on the Ladner’s Landing Facebook page, posting a map of the area and circling the locations where eagles seem to congregate the most. She noted several Delta departments have been working to determine what or who is bringing meat, bone and bag remnants into the area that has made some dogs sick.
“Signage was placed to advise that feeding of the birds is not welcome. Today there was a pulley system noticed and we suspected it was someone using an intricate trap for the birds but it turned out to belong to the film crew,” Jones said. “Looking at the evidence of where the bags are in the trees, the activity of the birds, historical information about similar problems in other areas
of the bog, etc., we have determined that the eagles are most likely taking items from the landfill and flying to these circled areas to eat their find so they aren’t bothered by other bird species.” Some baiting might occur but it’s suspected the majority of the food scraps and bags are from the landfill, she explained. Jones told the Optimist bags have been seen strewn high atop trees, so
whatever the eagles are not eating is ending up dripping to the ground. “People who are feeding eagles are not throwing bags high up into the trees, so we wrote the post just to let people know that’s what we suspect is happening. It’s happing in other nature areas,” she added. If someone sees an individual baiting birds, they’re asked to call the shelter at 604-940-7111.

Report looks at ways to increase seawall height SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Waterfront property owners could be forced to further beef up their seawalls. That was one of the recommendations recently put forward to Delta council in an engineering department report on flood response in Boundary Bay and Beach Grove. Those areas were hit with localized flooding in March due to a storm. The problem is not so much with the seasonal tide, but concerns over a storm surge created by high winds and heavy rain. Delta is looking at what further measures should be taken, including increasing the height of the municipal seawall from 3.4 metres to 4.1 metres to meet the anticipated impacts from global warming and sea level rise. “Given the significant funding requirements to increase the seawall height, staff are recommending that staff investigate options to require owners at the time of rede-

Deputy director of engineering Hugh Fraser told civic politicians there’s still a lack of consistency when it comes to the municipal and private seawalls. “We distinguish between Boundary Bay Village, where the seawalls are privately owned, and the Beach Grove area where most of the seawall is under right-of-way and was constructed under the Fraser River Flood

Some owners have raised the seawall there, marginally, but what we’re suggesting is a consistent standard between Boundary Bay Village and Beach Grove Village and that we work toward achieving the 4.1 (metre) elevation consistently through that community,” Fraser said. The engineering department also noted there’s a need for a weather station to track wind speed and provide video on the waterfront.

Policeunionwantsindependent review of shooting investigation Delta Police Association suggesting third party be brought in JESSICA KERR

Delta’s police union is calling for a third party to review the investigation into an on-duty shooting that led to a seconddegree murder charge against one of its own. Late last year, the Delta Police Association filed a complaint with the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner in the hopes it would review how the Independent Investigations Office investigated a fatal 2012 shooting involving Const. Jordan MacWilliams. Association president S/Sgt. Ryan Hall said this week the union was told the commissioner needed permission from the province’s deputy attorney general, who in his response, said he was directing the IIO to review the investigation internally. He was also called to testify at a coroner’s inquest into the shooting. “What’s lost in this is Jordan lost two years of his life to stress,” Hall said.

Fifty thousand dollars in federal funding was announced for Tour de Delta’s White Spot Delta Road Race last Friday at an event at municipal hall. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough announced this year’s race was awarded the grant through Sport Canada. “The White Spot Delta Road Race is the only professional road cycling race in B.C. for both men and women that is recognized and sanctioned by the International Cycling
Union,” Qualtrough said. That sanctioning is a really big deal for cycling and a big deal for Delta, she added. This marks the third straight year the Tour de Delta has received a $50,000 grant for its road race, which takes place in Tsawwassen. “This federal grant … will make a big difference in helping us provide two premium cycling events,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. Tour de Delta chair Cal Traversy told the Optimist the grant funding can be used towards things like getting big screen TVs at
the event and using chip timing for the competitors. “Technology for cycling is very expensive, so this goes a long way to helping out with the things we want to do to make our race more professional,” he said. The Tour de Delta also includes the MK Delta Lands Criterium in North Delta and the Brenco Criterium in Ladner. This year’s Tour de Delta goes from July 8 to 10 and is part of B.C. Superweek, which includes events in Vancouver, Burnaby, Port Coquitlam and White Rock.

fter the ferry terminal, it might well be the next most recognizable entity in town. For more than 30 years, Splashdown Park has helped put Tsawwassen on the map, welcoming sliders and sun worshippers from throughout the region for a whole lot of summertime fun. It’s also been a favourite destination of locals to the point where most people around here have some sort of memory or story from time spent at the park. Splashdown opened just as I was exiting my teens, so most of my recollections are of outings since my son was born, which to be fair to the place, is a venue better suited to the younger generation. I know I’d have different memories if it had been around when I was a kid. I vividly remember my heart racing, fearful that I had broken my young son’s leg, after I landed on top of him at the bottom of one of the kiddie slides. We had started side-by-side, but before we hit the shallow water, he had somehow managed to get in front of me, which made for a collision at the bottom of the pool he had no hope of winning. Once he graduated to the bigger slides, I can remember hoofing my way to the top of the giant staircase, only to stand in line while the wind whipped off the Strait of Georgia. The kids around me didn’t even seem to notice but not even my added insulation was enough to keep me warm, although I must say it was sufficient to slow me down on the slide so the next slider routinely caught up. It wasn’t until he got old enough to blast around the park on his own that Splashdown took on a new meaning as a lawn chair, cold beverage and some reading material ensured we could both enjoy our time at the iconic spot. Sadly, 2016 will be the last season to make those memories, although it’s hard not to have seen the writing on the wall given all that’s going on at the Tsawwassen First Nation these days, to say nothing of the price of real estate in the Lower Mainland. It was inevitable that a business that only operates three months a year but requires a big chunk of land was living on borrowed time. That time will be up once summer is in the books, which means you still have an opportunity for one more splash and one final memory.
Hawaii deal offers first chance to crow about exporting LNG
I
f you watched the news last week you may have seen where FortisBC announced a major deal to create and export LNG (liquid natural gas) from Delta to Hawaii. This deal has been in the works for some time and represents the first export of B.C. LNG that the provincial government can proclaim. Is it a big deal? Yes. Is it a good deal? Yes. Natural gas will flow down from Northeast B.C. along the current pipelines and then be compressed in an expanded facility at Tilbury. It will be loaded onto tankers at the dock being planned and shipped to Hawaii where it will replace diesel and oil feedstock for Hawaii Electric for 20 years while it prepares for carbon-free power generation. To do this Fortis will create a new company to compress the gas for export. It needs a dock and export permit from the National Energy Board. Presto, Wespac Midstream LLC already has the permit from the NEB and is getting approval for the dock on the
Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON
Fraser River. Unlike most LNG projects, this one will use hydro power to compress the gas. The power will come from the Ladner’s Arnott substation along a yet to be constructed power line — if agreement with farmers and Delta can be gained. The environmental bonus is that no significant greenhouse gas will be produced at this site. So what’s not to be liked? The additional power will come from the grid that will need the power from Site C before long. How the power is transmitted from Arnott to Fortis may be easy or conten-
tious — too soon to know. The really good news is elsewhere — Hawaii is taking significant steps to convert from dirty fuels to a clean fuel enroute to solar and wind energy. That’s progress. Delta will gain an increase in taxes as the capital investment in the storage and processing facility will be in the billions. Fire risk will not likely be much different — mainly carefully controlled by design and by many checks, balances and procedures. The main caution is that we are seeing a major gas facility being built within the community whereas most facilities of this kind are required to be located away from housing and populations and located within designated major petrochemical areas. Stay tuned as the deal is not yet done. It needs approvals from several levels of government, including the State of Hawaii, which wants the conversion to carbon-free generation to proceed much more rapidly. Job program not fair to all
Editor: Re: Feds double funding for summer jobs in Delta, May 20 Recently Delta MP Carla Qualtrough announced the federal government is doubling funding for the Canada Summer Jobs Program for youth in Canada. On the surface it sounds like a good idea to offer more employment opportunities to youth via wage subsidies during the summer when they are out of school, but in fact it is a discriminatory practice. I will try to explain why. First of all, how does the federal government define youth? Canadian Heritage devoted a two-page briefing note to this question, and concluded that some government programs are for youth age 12 to 17 and others are for youth age 18
to 35. Thirty-five? In order to be eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program, an applicant must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment, have been registered as a fulltime student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year. By limiting a wage subsidy program to participants based on their age, the federal government is allowing employers to discriminate against other potential job applicants over the age of 30. Therefore, the government is guilty of age discrimination and is violating Section 15 of our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. As a mature student who is retraining for
another career via night school and distance education, I am not eligible for the Canada Summer Jobs Program because I am over the age of 30. Right now, that means I am not able to compete for seasonal jobs in many local municipalities, non-profits and small businesses. The illusion that all youth in Canada are unemployed or underemployed, and need to be given special access to employment programs, is just that, an illusion. The Canada Summer Jobs Program is not being fairly applied, and should be reconsidered. It’s time for Ottawa to redefine youth as people aged 12 to 18, and to treat all other adults equally under the law. It’s only fair. A. Cameron
SDSS students put on quite a show
Editor: My wife and I are ardent play enthusiasts and see a lot of plays of varying price ranges. We saw Shrek the Musical, done by the students of South Delta Secondary, and consider the $15 ticket price money well spent. We have never had so much fun at a play than what these performers delivered. If you weren’t smiling in amazement, you were gut wrenching in laughter. Our faces hurt by the end because of all the laughter. Shrek, the poor Ogre
who was kicked out of his home at the age of seven, was brilliant. Donkey helped him throughout the mission and was hilarious, while Lord Farquaad never left his role even when he was in the background making hilarious facial and body movements. There were so many funny characters that I keep suddenly thinking of — Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs, Three Blind Mice, Gingy, The Gay Wolf and especially the three Princess Fionas, each with fabulous voices — even
though it’s been more than a week since we saw the play. My hat is off to the performers but I would be remiss if I didn’t thank and congratulate the whole production crew, orchestra and, of course, the teachers of South Delta Secondary. Art is the cornerstone of civilization. I hope our trustees remember that when they are doing budgets and ensure these young folk will be able to continue to develop their skills and talents. Khal Drogo Domestic Short Hair, Orange Tabby, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 3 years old)
Khal Drogo came to the shelter in an odd predicament - he was a daddy! Often times in the cat world male cats usually don’t seem to stick around to raise their young but for some reason this big orange tabby boy seemed to. We don’t know for sure that he’s the father of Khaleesi’s seven kittens but there’s an awful lot of orange in there! Khal was a bit unsure of people when he first came into the shelter but it didn’t take long for him to realize we were okay. He’s still getting used to us but food and gentle pets seem to be the way to this rough boy’s heart. Khal is fully litter box trained and loves to eat! We aren’t sure yet how he’ll be with other cats as he had some wounds from cat fights but time will tell. It will be safer that Khal be adopted to a home with adult children or adults only as he’s still nervous around people. Khal Drogo has been neutered already and is patiently awaiting a dental.

Business association highlights Ladner through new campaign Business Briefs
The Ladner Business Association is working to put Ladner on the map. The association implemented a campaign earlier this year aimed at highlighting local businesses, and business owners, as well as places to visit. LBA president Andrea Frustaci said the association has a new social media team in place and is using blogs, Facebook (facebook.com/ discoverladner), Twitter (@DiscoverLadner) and Instagram (DiscoverLadner), and the hashtag #DiscoverLadner, to share businesses, people and places around Ladner. Frustaci said with the mega malls at Tsawwassen First Nation opening later this year, the association wanted to do more to actively promote Ladner, not only locally but also throughout the region. *** Despite construction in the heart of Ladner Village, one of the LBA’s major events of the year, the annual Quilt Walk and Car Show, is still going ahead this year. Set for Sunday, Aug. 21, preparations are in full swing for this year’s event. Organizers are still looking
for event sponsors, and car registration is now open. The annual event will feature the usual classic and vintage cars, as well as a colourful array of creative quilts, food and retail vendors, and entertainment. And the Pin-Up Pageant is back after a successful first run last year. Frustaci said the only difference this year is the location, which will have to be moved due to the ongoing construction on Delta Street. He said organizers are looking at several options. For more information on this year’s show, visit www.quiltwalkcarshow. com. *** Delta’s ParkCanada RV Park & Tenting, which is located next to Splashdown Park in Tsawwassen, is taking part in a national celebration for the Make-A-Wish Foundation tomorrow. Go RVing is inviting campers to participate in an impactful event to raise funds for the foundation. Campers will be able to purchase LED Wish lanterns to help build a Wish Garden and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Participants will be able to write a wish on the lantern bag, place it in the magical Wish Garden and

The lanterns will be lit across the country at 10 p.m. *** Tim Hortons Camp Day returns Wednesday, June 1 with 100 per cent of coffee sales at participating restaurants donated to the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation. The foundation helps provide more than 19,000 kids from low-income families across North America with an experience that builds essential life skills to make their futures brighter. “Camp Day is the Tim Hortons Children’s Foundation’s largest annual fundraising initiative and this year we’re celebrating its 25th anniversary,” said Dave Clanachan, president and COO of Tim
Hortons Canada and chair of the THCF. Last year, Camp Day raised $12.4 million in Canada and the U.S., allowing close to 18,000 kids from low-income families to spend some time at one of the seven THCF camps. *** The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has been awarded for outstanding employment equity. The port authority was recently one of more than 30 Canadian employers to receive an Employment Equity Achievement Award from the federal government. ous reason for individuals to attend church is to practice their faith, studies have shown there are many other benefits to being part of a religious community. Attending church not only breaks seniors’ sense of isolation by getting them out into the community, but it can also help them see all the good in the world, and give their life a deeper meaning. Transportation often is the reason why seniors stop attending church. If you are senior or looking after a senior who misses being part of a religious community, please give one of the local churches on this page a call. I know they would be happy to assist you in re-connecting.

After her husband died two years ago, Trudy’s (not her real name) son and daughter decided it was time for her to give up her house and move into an assisted living facility. During one of our visits she confided to me, “I don’t feel like I belong anywhere… everyone’s very nice here… I come down for my meals, but then there’s nothing to do, so I go back up to my little apartment.” When I asked her about recreation programs and activities, she dismissed them, saying, “Oh, yes, they have casino nights and such, but I need more than just playing Bingo games.” While many seniors adjust and even thrive in assisted living facilities,

Bees find homes at Neilson Grove
Neilson Grove Elementary students are doing their part to help out the local bee population. The Ladner school’s Green Team organized a recent contest that encouraged students to build bee houses. “This was an initiative we thought would be worthwhile,” said Green Team teacher coordinator Paula Lewry, adding the group has been working hard fundraising since it started a couple years ago. Students built approximately 40 bee houses, which are now hanging outside the school. The Green Team came

He explained a number of the school’s classes are doing bee units and that the school recently had a science fair where bees were an encouraged topic.
St. Monica’s Guild celebrating 30th anniversary
St. Monica’s Guild of Sacred Heart Parish will celebrate its 30th anniversary with a luncheon at Beach Grove Golf Club on Sunday, June 5. The guest speaker will be Dileep Athaide, the newly ordained deacon, who will speak about the history of the deaconate, his journey to become a permanent deacon,
his responsibilities and duties, and how his role as deacon is different than the other newly ordained deacons. St. Monica’s Guild was formed in 1986 under the direction of Father Allan Charnon of the Order of St. Augustine. The objectives of the guild were many: to enhance the spiritual, social and educational
lives of the women of the parish and to provide a network of volunteers for parish work, such as fundraising (Christmas Market), service (funeral receptions), spiritual (retreats and prayer groups), social (luncheons) and educational (conferences). A key focus is to promote leadership and sup-

The fundraising focus is to disperse funds to select charities, youth group activities, educational opportunities, guest speakers and parish activities. Seniors How Do I Get Help? Help IS out there There are many resources in the community to help seniors get the support they need. Once the needs are identified, the challenge is to know where to look and who to ask. A referral to Fraser Health, through their Central Intake phone line (604-953-4965), is a great place to start. Fraser Health will assign a case manager who will assess the individual’s personal care needs, inform the person of what help can be provided by the health authority and make recommendations and referrals to other professionals. The cost of support services provided through Fraser Health is based on the income of the senior (free to many low income seniors). Unfortunately, it can take several weeks before a case manager is available, in the meantime, search
the internet if you can, go to senior and recreation centers, doctors’ offices, pharmacies and read through your local newspapers to find information directories, flyers or ads for local services. Ask around, talk to friends and neighbours, the stranger next to you on the bus even; many people have faced the same or similar challenges and will happily share their knowledge. There are many great services out there to access, free, by donation or for a fee. Another important point to note is that Fraser Health will only provide assistance with personal care needs such as bathing and dressing not preparing meals or cleaning your home. For those kinds of services (often called hospitality supports) there are companies that will come to

If you find it too difficult, or just don’t want, to deal with multiple providers, you could look to move to seniors’ housing instead. There you would have all the hospitality supports provided by a single provider, have many opportunities for social and recreational activities as well as someone close by should you have an emergency. Help can be found for any situation, be persistent, ask questions and don’t give up.

ome “retro fun” is in store next Saturday as the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen presents its inaugural Soap Box Derby. The club, in partnership with the Corporation of Delta, is putting on the event that will see over 40 youngsters race down 6th Avenue in Tsawwassen. “Because we’re Rotary we wanted to make this a fundraiser for us as well as providing some unique entertainment and opportunity for some kids to go down the hill,” says the club’s David Anderson. He explains the service club ordered just over 40 soap box racer kits and went out and found sponsors, including the municipality, the police and fire departments and local businesses, to organize their own teams. All of the spots for this year are essentially full, he explains, noting the club wants to run the event on an annual basis. He says kids between nine and 12 will be doing the actual racing. Every participant will get a minimum of three runs down the hill and there will be trophies for top finishers as well as for best decorated/most interesting carts via the people’s choice. Anderson says the club’s primary concern is for the racers to get down the hill safely. “We want the kids to have a good time.” The start of the staging area is located at Milsom Wynd while the finish line is at 52nd Street. As for how fast the carts will be going, he says a trial run was recorded at 19 km/h. “It doesn’t sound like much but when your butt is only six inches off the

Park and a sound sculpture at a local park. The soap box derby runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 4.
Spectators are encouraged to walk or ride their bikes to the event. A training run and cart inspection takes place
tomorrow from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, contact soapbox@rotarytsawwassen.org.

South Delta Artists Guild kicks off summer program Annual Oil and Water juried contest attracts more than 200 entries; winners announced June 2 NOREEN FAIRWEATHER
Optimist contributor
The South Delta Artists Guild kicks off its summer program by celebrating the results of its prestigious Oil and Water competition on Thursday, June 2 with an awards reception at Gallery 1710. Rod Winning, past president of the guild and chair of Oil and Water for the past two years, reports that by the deadline, 213 entries had been received in a competition open to any artist. Since its beginning in 2004, the guild’s most important annual event has been a juried contest, and this year’s jurors are Susan Cowan, Barrie Chadwick and Perry Haddock, awardwinning artists and full signature members of the Federation of Canadian Artists. The jurors accepted 96 paintings to be judged for specific awards, which will be announced at the June 2 reception. These include $1,000 top prize for best in

value to more than $3,500. All accepted paintings will be on show in Gallery 1710 for the award
announcements, and the show will continue through June 25. All of the paintings are for sale.
Gallery 1710 is adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen and is open
Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A voluntary society run entirely by more than 140 members, the guild rents the building from the Corporation of Delta and makes Gallery 1710 one of the most used facilities in South Delta. Each member has at least one specific responsibility and this enables the guild to run workshops at all levels, provide daily drop-in programs, arrange regular displays at Delta Hospital and three other local facilities, and work generously and cooperatively to encourage the appreciation and practice of art in the community. Membership runs from hopeful beginners to widely-recognized and popular artists, linked in friendship and endeavour through their interest in art, and coordinated by a board of directors headed by president Nancy Dean. The guild’s annual meeting will be held June 6. Visitors are welcome to attend the Oil and Water reception on June 2, which runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

How to correctly work out for weight loss Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
Working out is good for us. This is an absolute fact that we know. We also know that in order to lose weight, we need to start working out too. Yes, fine looking abs are first made in the kitchen (or more precisely visiting the kitchen less), but it is also beneficial to exercise on a weekly basis to help burn the fat that is already on our bodies, increase our lean muscle mass as well as work off the calories we eat throughout the day. But what should we do on a weekly basis to effectively burn the fat? Should we perform car-
dio or weights, or both? And if so, does it matter which one we do first? To help you program the best workouts for your week (and in turn help you look better naked), I have written out exactly what and when you should be doing for your workouts to effectively lose weight. However, before we dive into that I need to explain a couple of the energy systems in the body that need to be hit for the best results. The anaerobic system depends on energy sources that are already stored in the muscles. This system is utilized when we perform short-lasting, yet high intensity, activities. Some examples: sprinting, running up Fred Gingell stairs or doing a hard set of weights. Anaerobic training is the type of training that burns when you workout. This is because the active muscles are running without the use of oxygen and they are becoming increasingly acidic as the seconds tick. Anaerobic exercise can only last a few seconds to
about two minutes max and has been shown to increase our ability to burn calories (and therefore fat) well after our workout is finished. This is why we recommend this type of training for weight loss. It is a great way to train when you are short on time. You get the most “bang” for your fitness buck in the least amount of time. Now, if you are still able to keep going after the two-minute anaerobic threshold mark you have switched over to your aerobic energy system. This means you are now using oxygen to help break down the glycogen to fuel your muscles. Aerobic exercise is any workout that is longer in duration and medium to easy in intensity. Some examples are jogging and bike riding. Basically it’s any steady-state workout where you maintain about the same intensity throughout. To effectively burn the greatest amount of calories (and therefore fat), you need to hit both of these
energy systems. However, if done in a specific order you can really maximize your fat burning capabilities. For instance, if you perform your aerobic, or cardio, workout after your strength training workout you will burn a higher percentage of stored fat. This is because you burned the already stored glycogen in the muscle cells first during your strength workout. Afterwards, once when you hit the treadmill, you will start hitting your stored fat cells faster. As well, the research pointing towards strength training as a better way to lose weight is astounding — and it could not be any clearer for those of us over the age of 40. You see, after the age 30 we start to lose a percentage of our lean muscle mass with every passing year. This lean muscle mass is what helps our metabolic furnace run smoothly and efficiently. We are better fat-burners with more lean muscle mass. Take away this lean
muscle mass and now you have people who have never had to watch their weight before look down at their waistlines at 50 years of age and think, “Where the heck did that come from?” It came from a depressed metabolism due to a lower lean muscle mass, my friend. There is also some great research on fasted cardio for weight loss (as well as some equally great research saying otherwise… haha). The theory behind fasted cardio is that you start burning your stored fat faster as a fuel, as opposed to the carbs stored in the cells. I have tested this theory and found it works for me and some of my clients. Try it yourself and see if you have success with it. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer who can help you do those strength workouts you should be doing every week. Check out her in-person group training and online fitness plans at: www.fitnesswithpj.com.
7-Day Workout Plan
• Sunday: long, slow cardio. Perform an aerobic activity for 40-60 minutes, such as hiking or a bike ride. • Monday: 45-minute total body strength workout, finished off with 15 minutes of intervals on the treadmill or StairMaster. • Tuesday: fasted cardio first thing in the morning for 20 to 30 minutes, yoga in the evening to help you sleep. • Wednesday: 40-minute total body strength workout, finished off with 20 minutes of intervals on the treadmill. • Thursday: fasted cardio 20 to 30 minutes and yoga or stretching afterwards, or in the evening. • Friday: 45-minute total body strength workout, finished off with 15 minutes of intervals on the treadmill or StairMaster. • Saturday: 20 to 30 minute fasted cardio, or day off.

Climbing the iron way — Via Ferrata in Old Quebec JAMIE ROSS
W
Optimist contributor
hen my Quebec City guide told me that tomorrow I would be experiencing something called Via Ferrata, she must have been surprised by my reaction, something she undoubtedly would have put down to the subtle nuances of language. “Sounds delicious,” I had responded, dreaming fondly of some kind of pasta dish — a delicious white wine, garlic and clam sauce over linguini, served up at the wonderful Bello Ristorante in Old Quebec. What a miscalculation, I am thinking, as I find myself pressed tight against a sheer rock wall adjacent to the Chute Montmorency, clipped onto a re-bar hook by a carabiner and bungee. The roar of the 83-metre waterfall is deafening just to my left. If I check my footholds, I can see some 60 metres below the jagged rocks
at the base of the cliff, whipped by the spray from the cascade. If I tilt my head and peer above, I see only the wire cable and metal rungs curving up the rock face, like some manufactured but very real climbing wall. Did I mention I am not fond of heights? This, apparently, is Via Ferrata — Italian for “iron way.” The type of climb was invented by the Italian army during the First World War as a means to get troops and equipment through the Dolomite Mountains. Now it has become a popular tourist activity, where a series of ladders, rock-embedded iron rings, cables and single rail bridges enable amateur climbers, apparently with a bit of a death wish, to scale and traverse rock faces, fissures and deep chasms, and thus experience the kind of adrenalin rush normally reserved for extreme rock jocks. Whistler is the only place in B.C. to offer tours, but its widespread acceptance in Quebec is now a fait accompli.
Montmorency Falls Park is located a few minutes from Quebec City. Between river and cliffs, it is one of the most spectacular sites in the province. It is a beautiful and dramatic landscape when observed from the cable car that I travelled up in, or from within the comfort of the Manor Montmorency at the top. On this 270-metre climbing route, I’m not sure if I am as impressed as I should be by the breath-taking view — and to put this into perspective, this waterfall is 30 metres higher than Niagara Falls. It is true that on this Via Ferrata you are accompanied by an accomplished, park-certified guide, but for some reason our expert has chosen me to lead the group, while he concentrates more on a pretty young climber from Chicago. Now, as I laboriously clamour up what I hope is the final stretch of the Route Torrent de Montmorency, I am just trying to concentrate on the small world right in
Tackling the Via Ferrata route at the Chute Montmorency Parc. front of me. Unclip one of the safety lines (never both), move upward a step and clip back in. Repeat. From below the guide yells up instructions. “James,” he shouts, “you will find it easier if you move yourself back from the wall a bit.” Yes, I suppose he is right, and it might also save the bloody scratches I am inflicting to my nose, lips and eyebrows. Still,
not really wanting advice at this juncture, I yell something back down to him that we will not repeat here. Perhaps I am sounding like I didn’t fully enjoy this activity, and certainly there might have been a brief time when I questioned what I was doing. I had been put outside my comfort zone, but, as I climbed over the crest of the rock wall at the top of the chute, this made the

feeling of having accomplished something that much better. It is a fantastic and rewarding adventure. Even the zipline that I had fretted about before heading out on the iron way, the one that will whisk us over the brink of the falls on our journey back to the manor, is nothing after the climb. Kids learn life skills when they’re at summer camp
To many people summer camp for kids might appear like nothing more than fun and games. However, a study conducted in the past few years supports what camp directors have been saying for decades: Camp is a setting for positive youth development where invaluable life skills are acquired and nurtured. “The major changes in [campers’] growth speaks tremendously of the summer camp experience,” says Troy Glover, the director of the University of Waterloo’s Healthy Communities Research Network. Glover spearheaded the Canadian Summer Camp Research Project, the first-ever nationwide and international research and evaluation project of its kind. Conducted in the summer of 2010, the study tracked 1,288 campers, aged three to 18, from 16 overnight and day camps across Canada. The results demon-

strated that for “bubblewrapped” youth who have been over-programmed and overprotected, camp provides a safe environment to freely learn, grow and develop their capabilities.
Summer camp, according to the study, fosters emotional intelligence (or EQ), self-confidence, independence, healthy living, environmental awareness, leadership and other skills that prove beneficial long into adulthood. Here are five critical life skills that get a huge boost at summer camp: 1. How to get along with others: Talk to any camp alumni and you’ll likely hear how some of their most meaningful friendships and lessons on how
to get along with others came from camp. 2. How to overcome challenges: It’s time to unwrap the “bubblewrapped” generation. Saturated with 24-hour news highlighting crimes in their communities, many parents today are overprotective of their children. 3. How to get fit: A recent Statistics Canada study found that only seven per cent of youth aged six to 19 got the recommended hour a day of exercise they need. Enter summer camp. 4. How to love the Earth: “Children need nature for the healthy development of their senses and, therefore, for learning and creativity,” says Richard Louv. 5. How to lead: When it comes to developing strong leaders, camp provides both implicit and explicit training. Article provided by www.ourkids.net/camp.

Summer Camps
Create checklist to help choose right camp
Choosing the right camp from among the number and variety of camps available can be overwhelming. Parents need to begin by talking with their child and together creating a list of requirements and expectations. They should consider: • The child’s interests and the activities he hopes to experience at camp. • The desired characteristics of the camp site. • The distance from home that is acceptable to the child and his family. • The length of stay. • The child’s physical, medical, dietary and emotional needs. • Whether the child is willing to go alone or prefers to go with a friend. • Whether a single sex or co-ed camp is preferred. • Whether a secular or religiously-based camp is preferred. • The limitations of the family’s budget. Parents often ask at what age a child should begin overnight camp, however considering readiness is more significant
than age: • Can the child make his own bed and look after his own belongings? • Has the child spent a night away from home at a friend’s or grandparents’ house? • Is the child asking to go to camp? • Has the child attended day camp? Day camp is an introduction to some aspects of the overnight camp experience — meeting new friends, being cared for by a counsellor and participating in camp activities with other children. Throughout the selection process, the potential camper should participate by visiting websites and then browsing printed material or a DVD provided by the camp on request. The more the child is involved in the decision, the greater the chance of a successful outcome. After reducing the field to a few possibilities, the family should compile a list of questions and speak to the director. No question is too direct where
a child’s safety and wellbeing is the top priority. • Is the camp accredited by its provincial camping association? • Who is the director? • What are his/her qualifications and experience? • What is the camp’s mission statement or philosophy? • What can a child expect to gain from the experience? • What written and practiced policies ensure camper safety? • Who is directly responsible for a camper at all times? • Who are the counsellors? How old are they? What are their qualifications? What training do they receive? • What is the percentage return of staff? • What is the camper-tocounsellor ratio? • What is the percentage of returning campers? • Who are the campers? Are they local or international? Article provided by the Canadian Camping Association.
Finding out the amenities and activities a camp offers allows parents and children to make an informed choice.

By now you may have browsed camp guides, visited as many websites as possible and asked other parents for their tips to help narrow down your choices. So what’s the next step in your summer camp search? Well, there’s nothing quite like a camp visit. If you have never visited a summer camp, do so and you won’t want to leave. Summer camps welcome the chance to show you around and answer all your questions. Call ahead to arrange a tour, and make sure to bring your child along. As part of your research, try to visit camps you’re interested in the summer before you plan to register your child. Some camps hold information sessions during the year. This is a great opportunity to meet the camp director, senior staff and, often, other campers and parents. Bring along a list of questions to ask so you don’t forget what’s impor-
tant to you. Below are some things to consider while researching camps: • Camp’s philosophy or vision: How does this translate into the day-today life of the camp? • Camp leadership and governance: What is the director’s background? How long has he or she been involved with the camp? Is the camp governed by a board or an owner-operator? • Staff qualifications: What kind of training do counsellors receive? Do any have certification in specialty areas? • Camp environment: What is the “feel” of the camp? Is it a welcoming place? Is it well maintained and secure? • Facilities and equipment: Is there a main dining hall, nurse’s office, cabins or tents in the case of a residential camp? Are there appropriate activity areas at day camps? Is there a playing field, waterfront or swimming pool? Special equipment
or facilities? What is the overall condition? • Program: What activities are available? What is a typical day’s schedule? • Activity time: How do campers interact with their counsellors and other staff? What is the camperto-counsellor ratio? • Age-appropriateness: Given your child’s age and stage of development, what programs would be good choices? Is there a range of ages among campers in each session and how is that handled? • Health, safety and well-being: What medical staff is on-site? What emergency policies and procedures are in place? How does the camp deal with homesickness? How are behaviour and discipline issues handled? • Fee: What’s included and what’s extra? • Camp life: Do campers seem engaged and happy? Can you picture your child in the setting? Article provided by www.ourkids.net/camp.

Qwanoes is celebrating 50 years of adventure
Camp Qwanoes on Vancouver Island turns 50 this year — and a giant celebration is planned all summer. About 200 campers attended the first camps in 1966. Since then numerous activities have been added, staff now come from all over the world, programs are offered yearround, and almost 4,400 campers came to camp last summer. “We always offer new adventures each year,” says executive director Scott Bayley. “We knew we needed to do something extra special for our 50th so we’re adding something called the Jet Stream where you can fly 1,000 feet through the air on a zipline from the bank overlooking the ocean to the heart of our Aqua-Park at Qwanoes Beach.” At the beach, campers can go wakeboarding, scale a 14-foot tall iceberg, soar through the air on the Blob, splash down floating
slides, or even play on a giant floating teeter totter with their friends. “Sure, we’ve added new buildings, many more campers and many new activities, but if a camper from 1966 came back for a visit they’d find the camp they loved as a child is still here,” says Bayley. “The deep love for kids, the sense of family and belonging, wonder and adventure, and love of life to the full — it’s all here, nothing has changed.” Bayley says they can’t wait to see what the future holds, so with that in mind, the camp’s theme for this year is Just Getting Started. Qwanoes is located in a spectacular ocean-front setting at the edge of Maple Mountain, about an hour north of Victoria in Crofton. Over 75 activities are offered for campers who come from Vancouver Island, Greater Vancouver and beyond. “There is something for
everyone — we have lots of amazing land activities too like outdoor laser tag, archery, skateboarding, and adventures on our challenge course in the trees. Fun is a huge part of each day,” says Bayley. “But what really makes a week at Qwanoes so special is that we love kids. Each week almost 200 carefully-screened staff from about 12 countries work together as a team to provide the greatest week of a child’s life. Qwanoes is a safe place where kids are not only accepted but valued.” In our fast-paced, plugged-in world, camp is an ideal opportunity for kids to experience outdoor adventure and to connect with others from all kinds of backgrounds. Qwanoes is a Christian camp, and an ideal place for fun-filled, life-changing adventure. Check out the summer 2016 video at www.qwanoes.ca/summer/media.

Tigers triumph in Richmond Bantam AAA team show they are provincial contenders with tourney win MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A year ago they proved to be no expansion pushover. Now the Delta Tigers are legitimate provincial championship contenders. The Bantam AAA baseball team confirmed that status by capturing Richmond City Baseball’s Queen Victoria Day Invitational over the long weekend. The Tigers rolled to five straight victories in what was considered the most deepest field in the tournament’s history. Delta defeated the host Chuckers 3-0 in the championship game Monday after hours earlier knocking off Alberta’s Okotoks Black Dawgs 3-2, the defending champion. The Tigers made an instant impression in 2015 as a first-year program thanks to the support and talent from Delta’s three minor baseball associations — Tsawwassen, Ladner and North Delta. They were one of eight teams to earn provincial berths and narrowly missed out on advancing to the semi-finals.

Delta Tigers Travis Miller puts the tag on a Tri-City baserunner during action at the Richmond Baseball Bantam AAA Queen Victoria Invitational. The Tigers won this game went on to capture the 12-team event.
Tigers Sean Sasaki celebrates his team’s 3-2 semi-final win over Okotoks. Cam Frick was named B.C. Minor Baseball’s U15 coachof-the-year for his efforts. The sophomore bench boss says the 2016 squad is set-up to succeed further thanks to a roster full of second-year players and plenty of pitching depth which bodes well for tournament play. “Last year, we came in as a big underdog and now teams are tak-
ing us seriously,” said Frick. “We are seeing a lot of the teams best pitchers every time out and it has been good for us. It gets us in a good situation and mentally prepared in that we are used to seeing good pitching. “We made the call to go with 14 players this year. We took a couple of extra guys mainly as pitchers and it’s showing now. We are a deep team and hopefully (this tournament win) is a sign of more good things to come.” The Tigers received a solid outing from Caleb Cassie in their 7-5 opening round-robin win over White Rock. Delta then rolled past Tri-City 8-3 to set up a quarterfinal date with Victoria Black, featuring the third and fourth place teams in the B.C Minor Bantam AAA League respectively. Ethan McDougall was ready for the challenge and the Tigers came through with a 7-3 win. It was then up to Sean Sasaki to face powerhouse Okotoks and the lefty was superb in nearly going the
distance. Delta broke a 2-2 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth and Braedy Euerby came on in relief to record the final two outs of the game. Euerby, one of just two firstyear Bantams on the team, got the call in the final and was looking to duplicate a 3-1 win over Richmond a month earlier. The Ladner native was outstanding, limiting the Chuckers’ talented line-up to four hits and no walks in six innings of work. He also received some timely defensive plays on line drive hits that were turned into rally-killing double plays. The Tigers scored runs in the first, third and fifth inning. It was all they would need. Cassie got out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to earn the save. “You have to give (Euerby) a lot of credit,” said Richmond head coach Alex Klenman.”To be able to throw two pitches consistently for strikes at this age level is tough. We would like to get
him again at some point. It was like watching a replay (of the first game).” Frick is all too familiar with the Chuckers program, having played under Klenman for his secondyear of Bantam back in 2008. He also coached in Richmond before making the move back to his hometown. “A couple of times Alex came over, looked at me and just smiled,” laughed Frick. “He knows I have him read pretty good. They are a very solid team.” The Tigers roster also features: Sean Brownem Connor Baily, Sean Heppner, Jared Romaniuk, John-Pablo Wilson, Dylan McLeod, Reilly Noble, Travis Miller, Matt Payne and Max Ghilarducci. Extra innings. Sasaki has also been outstanding at the plate in a lead-off role — batting .549 for the season with a whopping 29 stolen bases. He also leads the team in hits (39) and RBIs (19).
