Delta casino could be in cards

B.C. Lottery Corporation asks local governments south of river if there’s interest in gaming facility SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta residents could soon be playing penny slots or doubling down at a casino close to home. The B.C. Lottery Corporation announced this week it’s taking the first step in determining interest in hosting a gaming facility among local governments in two areas of the Lower Mainland it believes are underserved. The Corporation of Delta, Tsawwassen First Nation as well as the City of Surrey have been asked whether they’re interested in playing host to a new casino south of the Fraser River. Local governments on the North Shore have been asked the same question. It’s part of the lottery corporation’s new process in which it’s inviting expressions of interest from select communities. Those communities have until July 15 to let BCLC know if they’re interested. If expressions of interest are submitted, the successful community is to be announced later this year. BCLC spokesperson Angela Koulyras said it’s still too early to talk about specific locations or type of gaming facility.

Mayor Lois Jackson said Delta would look into the idea of a casino after receiving an invitation from the B.C. Lottery Corporation. “We’ve reached out to these communities because it’s ultimately their decision on whether or not they want to have a gam-

ing facility. We just want to hear if they are interested at this point and there is no commitment by them or by us that we’re actually

going to do anything,” she said. Mayor Lois Jackson said Delta would look into the idea and that a staff report would come to

a public meeting of Delta council in the next couple of weeks for discussion. INVITATION: see Page 3

School district getting almost $700,000 back from province SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The Delta school district is getting extra cash from the province, money that it had originally been forced to trim from its

budget. The government announced this week it’s redirecting $690,188 in administrative savings back to the district to help it deal with cost pressures and provide front line services for

students. Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton said the school district can use the funding as it sees fit, including classroom programs, hiring new teachers or for busing.

Myth: The insurance companies choose the repair shop. Fact: It’s your car and you can use the repair shop of your choice. 604.943.6383

“School district officials have worked diligently to reduce administrative costs and now they can return these savings into front-line services for students,” said Hamilton. “We want this money to go directly toward

supporting students in the classroom and ensure the best possible education for our children.” School board chair Laura Dixon welcomed the funding news. FUNDS: see Page 3

The Liberals’ effort to take back Delta South in next year’s provincial election is taking shape as a second high-profile candidate has now been given the green light to run for the nomination. Former Delta police chief Jim Cessford’s application to have his name on the ballot when local Liberals select their candidate has been approved, creating what’s now an intriguing race with Delta council member Ian Paton. Cessford and Paton are the only two, so far, to have put their names forward, but having two so-called “name” candidates is an indication the party likes its chances next May against two-term incumbent independent Vicki Huntington. Delta South Liberal Riding Association president Kelly Guichon, who recently told the Optimist there is a sense of optimism among local Liberals, said a nomination meeting date still has to be set by the party. She noted that meeting will likely be held in late summer or early fall at the earliest.

Jim Cessford retired as Delta’s police chief last February after 20 years on the job. Those who want to vote at the meeting have to be a paid member for a minimum of 28 days. Members as young as 14 can vote at that meeting. As for Cessford, in a press release last week, the longtime former Delta top cop who retired last year, said he believes the key to future success is to continue the B.C. Liberals’ effective track record on the economy. “Residents of Delta South can count on me to be a strong advocate for the issues that matter to them. My career has been

built on dealing with the tough stuff head on. Voters can trust me to remain focused on the needs of the people of our community and to be their voice. It makes a big difference to how effective you can be when you really listen and understand their individual concerns are just as important as the big headline issues.” Cessford, who remains active in the community, will square off against a three-term councillor in Paton, who in a recent interview talked about how he would be a strong

Ian Paton was elected to his third term on Delta council in 2014. advocate on Delta issues, including farmland. Paton also talked about the importance of having someone represent the riding within government. It’s a similar message conveyed by previous Liberal candidates Bruce McDonald in 2013 and Wally Oppal in 2009. The upcoming nomination meeting looks to be the most intriguing since one at the South Delta Recreation Centre back in 1999. Well-respected MLA Fred Gingell died earlier that year, so the Liberals were forced to

find a replacement in what turned out to be a hotly contested, six-person race. Val Roddick emerged from that nomination process and followed that up with expected by-election and general electoral triumphs. She was MLA until retiring in 2009. Whichever candidate emerges this time around will then have to square off against Huntington, who confirmed she will seek a third term. The NDP has yet to announce any potential candidates or nomination meeting.

Delta and TFN to review invitation Funds not earmarked

CONTINUED from Page 1 “Certainly we’re very open to suggestions, as we always are, and particularly if it’s a benefit for our community, our people and our tax base. That’s certainly the positive side, but we’re going to have to look at other aspects too. It’s a big step and we’re looking forward to having that discussion,” Jackson told the Optimist. A spokesperson for the TFN said it would also

review BCLC’s invitation. It’s not the first time there’s been talk of a casino coming to the TFN. That talk seems certain to heat up once more as the First Nation’s major destination mall complex is set to open this October. The TFN does have ample land to build a hotel/ casino complex, and its first post-treaty land use plan did identify land for “hotel/tourism” development. Any proposal with a

gaming company, though, would likely have to go to the entire membership for a vote. Three years ago, the TFN was eyed, but not formally approached, as a potential location for a $100 million casino after Surrey council rejected a proposal. Gateway Casinos had been looking to build a 60,000-square-foot casino, 200-room hotel and a 27,000-square-foot convention centre.

CONTINUED from Page 1 “We are pleased that there has been a response to our ongoing advocacy,” said Dixon. “This announcement helps to recognize the ongoing funding needs of our district. District staff and the trustees will be looking at how to best utilize the funds in our commitment to being a leading district for innovative teaching and learner success.”

The funding, for now, is a one-time thing. School districts were instructed last year to find administrative savings, something that irked the Delta school board, which claimed its administration was already lean and efficient. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation said the funding announcement shows the government is feeling the pressure to restore education funding.

As a part of Child Care Month in B.C., the provincial government announced this week it is investing over $200,000 in the South Delta area to create 20 additional child care spaces. Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton announced that Reach Child and Youth Development Society’s planned child development centre in Ladner will receive $211,346 to fund 20 new preschool spaces for children aged three to five. “We are thrilled to be in partnership with the province in developing a much-needed preschool within our new child development centre,” said Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila. Reach expects to begin

Hamilton. Last November, the province encouraged child-care providers to apply for the third phase of major capital funding to create new licensed child care spaces throughout B.C. These new spaces are part of government’s commitment to support the creation of 13,000 new spaces by 2020. Non-profit child-care providers applied for up to $500,000, while private child-care providers could apply for up to $250,000. Priority was given to applications to create child care spaces in underserved areas of B.C. and on school grounds, where children can smoothly transition from early years programs, to the classroom, to after-school care.

Lions bring Vial of Life to Tsawwassen New program provides first responders with vital information, including medical conditions

The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club is rolling out a program this month aimed at making it easier for first responders to find vital information when dealing with medical emergencies. The Vial of Life program helps people organize vital information, such as medical conditions, allergies, current medications and emergency contacts, in one place that is easily accessible to emergency responders. The program directs participants to store the forms in the provided plastic vial in the fridge, because it is an easy location and there is one in every home. The kit also comes with a sticker for the front door and a fridge magnet to alert first responders to the presence of the vial.

Vial of Life committee chair Roger Lasell said the service club saw the program in use in Point Roberts and decided to bring it to South Delta. The program is sponsored by Eleanor Calderwood with Raymond James and Tsawwassen Pharmacy. Lasell said Vial of Life was rolled out in Tsawwassen starting June 1 with the aim of bringing it to Ladner in the fall. The kits are available free of charge at Tsawwassen pharmacies, fire halls, community police stations and some medical offices. Tsawwassen pharmacies will also, upon request, provide patients with two copies of their prescriptions. For more information, or to request a kit, email vialoflifedelta@gmail.com.

Residents and community organizations will have several opportunities this month to have their say about potential big changes for Winskill Park. It’s part of ongoing efforts to devise the Winskill Park Master Plan to determine what improvements could be in store for the Tsawwassen park as well as the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Some of the ideas at this point include an additional baseball diamond that can also be used as a multi-purpose space, extension of fitness opportunities in the fitness centre, enhancement of washroom and change facilities, developing “risk tolerance” children’s play areas and an expansion of the disc golf course, among other possible improvements. Planner Linda Nielsen told the Optimist a review of the initial input led to a prioritization exercise by members of Delta’s parks, recreation and culture

Only a small number of people trickled in to ask questions and fill out surveys during an open house last month on the future of Winskill Park. commission. Changes at the park could also be directly tied to improvements planned for the adjacent KinVillage. A new master plan is in the works that could see KinVillage expand its care facility, a renewal of existing buildings and add an expanded range of seniors’ housing options. That long-term plan would have “synergies” with Winskill Park. Winskill Park Master Plan meetings open to the public are scheduled for tomorrow from 12:30

to 3 p.m. at KinVillage Community Centre and on Tuesday, June 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Meetings for community organizations are set for Tuesday, June 7 and Wednesday, June, 15. Both run from 5 to 8 p.m. at the South Delta Recreation Centre. The Winskill Park Master Plan is to be completed this fall. For more information about the plan, check the Corporation of Delta’s website at delta.ca.

hen you get multiple “name” candidates seeking a nomination, it’s typically a signal the party in question has an excellent chance of winning the upcoming election. In these instances, the real battle is often for the candidacy, with the actual election more of a foregone conclusion. Think back to 1999 when, after the death of MLA Fred Gingell, the provincial Liberals had to select a candidate at a nomination meeting that was so large the fire marshal insisted it be held out back of the South Delta Recreation Centre. Val Roddick emerged victorious from that fray and easily retained the seat for the Liberals in the subsequent by-election. It was a similar scenario in 2012 when the federal Conservatives needed a replacement for popular MP John Cummins, who had turned his attention to provincial politics after 18 years in Ottawa. Kerry-Lynne Findlay won a contentious nomination and ended up besting her predecessor’s impressive popular vote total in the ensuing general election. When a party doesn’t control the riding, or doesn’t necessarily stand a good chance of winning the seat, the opposite usually holds true — its list of potential candidates shrinks considerably and doesn’t normally include anyone with a significant public profile. That pattern is being challenged this time around as the provincial Liberals have two prominent members of the community — Delta council member Ian Paton and retired police chief Jim Cessford — vying to carry the party’s banner in Delta South in next spring’s election. The winner of the nomination, however, won’t be in line for a slam dunk come the general election. In fact, they’ll face quite the challenge as history-making independent Vicki Huntington announced recently she intends to seek a third term next May. Huntington has already vanquished two “name” Liberal candidates so it’s not unreasonable to think she could do so again, although it should be noted this riding was represented by a Liberal from 1991 to 2009, and by Socreds prior to that, so right wing ties run deep. Paton and Cessford will need that support if one of them is to become Delta South’s next MLA, but in order to get there, they’ll have to win two battles, not just one.

n 1964, my parents moved back to Vancouver after my dad finished school in Toronto. They lived with my grandparents for a little while and were able to save some money and borrow a little to buy a house just down the lane on 43rd Avenue in Kerrisdale. They paid $16,000 for a simple Craftsman-style home on a 66-by120-foot lot. It is the last older home on the block. All of the other ones have since been sold and torn down for newer digs. My mom still lives there and enjoys the amenities of the community. Many years ago, the council of the day in Vancouver changed the zoning on part of the west side so homes could be built on 33-foot wide lots. I can remember there was some criticism of the move way back when. As it turned out, the zoning change went right down the middle of 43rd Avenue. Homes on the north side of the street could be built on 33-foot lots while the south side of the street kept 66-foot lots. Back then, all the north side homes were torn down so more homes could be built. This didn’t happen all at once, but there was always new building going on, and the kids that lived on the street always had a construction site to play on. I recall we built our share of forts with comman-

deered lumber scraps. Not much has changed in that area since then, although the pressure is mounting. Our humble family home is now a couple of million dollar tear down. A couple of blocks away there is a $6-million home that is being demolished so that some offshore investor can build his vision of the Vancouver dream. There are lots of vacant houses in this neighbourhood. My mom will occasionally see owners at the residences. Not for long though. She saw one of them recently and exchanged pleasantries. She thought it interesting that the sighting was in early May, right at census time. Last week, Dr. Paul Kershaw was on the radio talking about “Generation Squeeze” and the “Code Red” campaign that notes

that housing prices are out of reach and out of control. He said it now takes over 20 years for the average home buyer to save enough for a down payment in this brutal housing market. Generation Squeeze tells us that money and equity is overly owned by the 50-plus set and that people in their 20s, 30s and 40s are trapped in a housing crisis void. I am very concerned that my daughter will not have the chance to live in her own community if she wants too. In South Delta, and particularly Tsawwassen, housing stock is old and tired for the most part. “Affordability” is little more than a notion. Out here we are a three-sided island and there is little wiggle room remaining to keep our community vibrant with an appropriate mix of generations. I support the ALR, farmers and farming, but I think the rural urban edge needs to be carefully considered for housing opportunities. I also believe our governors need to consider amendments to the OCP to afford densification in and around the town centres of our communities. Our duty to protect jewel

Editor: Some distance from where I live there is a series of dogwood trees that are now in full bloom, and they are a glorious sight. I walked past them the other day and the flowers, symmetrical and prolific, form a blanket that almost hides the green leaves that nourish them. It was a drizzly morning and the white petals shimmered and trembled with the slightest movement of the air. I paused and reflected on the beauty that surrounds us. Whether aided by the

hand of man, or on its own, at this time of the year nature seems to tap us on the shoulder and say, “Look around you, see the miracle that unfolds before your eyes, life is all around you and you are part of it.” Those flowers and bushes and trees that our neighbours so lovingly nurture form an extended canvas that is savoured on those long peaceful walks. What a lovely place to be, and what a timely reminder to us of what things could be for a world too often pummeled by

greed, oppression and cruelty. We live on a rock — no, a jewel — that is hurtling through space tethered to a star that gives us warmth and light. We are fortunate to say, as we gaze around us, near and far, this is our home, our Earth, and we are connected to it. On Delta’s crest are the words, “Ours to preserve by hand and heart.” This beautiful combination of simple words is a mantra not just for our community, but for the whole planet. Frank Buonanno

Neighbour’s had enough of late night antics Editor: I am writing as a new resident of this fair city. Recently, I have moved into a brand new condo complex in Tsawwassen that just happens to be directly across from the Canada Post substation in town. It’s great to be so close to a mailbox and to have our friendly mail carriers right across the street. Although the large mail

trucks with their air brakes do come rather early (yawn) and stop out front to unlock the gate, thus waking us up, we were not surprised by this, and expect that over time we will become used to this familiar yet necessary noise. What we are surprised at though is the constant stream of late night, intoxicated loiterers. This Canada Post property is

like a magnet for these late night “rubies” and their idiotic conversations, cellphone chatter and even drug use and sexual interactions. While some of these antics are (at times) entertaining to listen to and watch, mostly it is becoming tiresome and we would appreciate it if these losers find another place to congregate. Pile driving underway to ensure integrity of bridge

Editor: In the vicinity of Cove Links and Marina Gardens we have for several weeks heard pile driving activity. I dropped by the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project office on Steveston Highway this week. This office has copies of many documents

relating to the tunnel replacement. The official on duty was very helpful and quickly produced relevant project data. The current pile driving is part of the geotechnical testing program necessary for lifetime integrity of the foundations for the new

bridge. It is reassuring to know this noise is in the interest of the future safety of bridge users. I hope similar diligence goes into design for the minimization of traffic noise for those who live along its corridors when it opens. Brian Redway

Balance lost years ago with port Editor: Re: Balance needed: port CEO, May 27 Robin Silvester, CEO of the Port of Vancouver, claims the three core components to create balance are economic prosperity through trade, healthy environment and thriving communities. In terms of local environment, the balance was lost years ago and we are now left with less than 20 per cent of the river and estuary habitats that existed 100 years ago. The cumulative effects of port and industrial development in the Fraser estuary, together with the accelerating loss of agricultural land throughout the Fraser delta, have put the survival of international migratory

bird populations at critical risk, and caused population declines of many other fish and wildlife, including Fraser salmon, and endangered southern resident orcas. In terms of economic prosperity through trade, Silvester claims the need for a second container terminal at Roberts Bank due to a growth of 30 million tonnes of cargo handled by the Port of Vancouver over the past five years. In fact, the port handled an increase of 24 million tonnes between 2008 and 2015. Of that 24-million tonne increase, 13 million was coal, five million was wheat and two million was potash. So why do we need a new container terminal?

The only growth in the container business is for U.S.-bound containers. Canadian taxpayers are paying billions for Gateway bridges, roads and rail to funnel U.S. containers and U.S. dirty coal through the Port of Vancouver. This is a huge net loss for taxpayers. Since 2008, Port of Vancouver net income has increased 15 per cent per year, assets eight per cent per year and management salaries 11 per cent per year. At the same time, tonnage has increased less than three per cent per year. Silvester repeats his mantra that the port needs more land. This is because the Port of Vancouver is no longer

about trade efficiencies. It is about land acquisitions and business spinoffs. Do we really want to use B.C.’s best farmland and scarce industrial properties to store empty containers? About 10 per cent of the containers are for the Metro Vancouver area. Seventy-three per cent are for back east or the U.S. If Transport Canada wants to create true balanced and sustainable trade, Minister Marc Garneau would resume responsibility for B.C. ports and ensure that the ports of Prince Rupert, Vancouver and Ashcroft work cooperatively in the public interest, not for vested interests. back tax owing. This individual, with a very East Indian accent, was very threatening, saying unless back taxes were paid we would be going to jail. Either her husband or lawyer must call 855-9796557 immediately. Knowing this was a scam and an attempt to extort money, we called the Delta Police Department to file a complaint. The answer received was not what we expected. We were told they did not take these complaints and we had to call some agency back east.

It is interesting to go on the Internet and find police departments like the one in Calgary are investigating these complaints yet our own police department could virtually care less. The next story will likely be the elderly Delta resident who fell for the scam and sent money as they were unaware of this scam as the Delta Police Department could not be bothered to do anything to warn the public. Happy to stick with independent Editor: Re: MLA not ready to retire, May 20 I found it very timely you would run an article on our independent MLA along with the challengers lining up to face her next year. Timely because recently Vicki Huntington brought an idea to the floor of the legislature that was meant to allow more work to be done in the time allotted when the legislature is in session. The idea was to limit the amount of time spent on applause and verbal cat calls, etc. that permeates daily activity. When she rose to read her suggestion, the members of both parties applauded and jeered through her entire presentation so the idea couldn’t be heard. I guess when you have worked hard in

the 74 days the government was in session during 2015, you don’t want anyone telling you there just might be a way to get more done. What arrogance. Also in March of this year the legislature broke into verbiage, usually associated with a pre-fight discussion in a bar, between the Liberal mines minister and an NDP critic. Immature and uncalled for. Then there was the incredible “Elbowgate” that the media investigated in depth from Ottawa. More of childish party politics at its best. Provincially or federally, this is not government, this is groups of individuals elected to a position with no experience, no priorities, limited capabilities and few manners, who

have pledged allegiance to their political party, and not the people who elected them. They show a complete disregard for taxpayers’ money, perform well below anything that would be accepted in private industry and show no interest in the concerns of the public they represent. So when you report that people are lining up to challenge Huntington in 2017 it only says to me that these challengers would be in Victoria to represent the Liberals or the NDP and I believe the last thing South Delta needs is an MLA that is just a party representative. With Huntington we have an honest MLA that only answers to the people of South Delta. I find it really refreshing what Bernie Sanders and

Donald Trump are doing to the elite of party politics in the United States. Decades of waste, mismanagement, poor judgment and creative accounting on all sides of government have created debt that our great grandchildren will still be paying, and we have very little to show for all that money spent. I’m sure Huntington’s challengers will be well known people in the community, but no matter how good they are or what they have done, in Victoria they would simply be another Liberal or NDP reading from the party playbook. So I’ll stay with Huntington who is free to express her thoughts, and is more than happy to listen to my concerns as a South Delta taxpayer. Greg Hoover

Welcomes You

There as so many amazing church, school and community events, tied into arts and music, for residents of South Delta to enjoy. So often it comes down to a choice of attending one over the option of many others. It really is such a blessing of cultural richness that we should be thankful for and never take for granted. To attend and enjoy an arts or music event offers many direct benefits like encouraging and lifting our spirits; celebrating and engaging the creative work of friends and neighbours; inspiring our own possibly latent gifts into creative expression; allowing us to support vital community

causes; and can even offer or trigger the possibility of transformation in our thoughts, actions and beliefs. While these kind of events are offered throughout the year, it seems like the spring and

early summer are filled with abundant possibilities. While I really do wish to encourage your attendance at such events, and I am fully aware that family performance involvement is a strong priority draw, I do extend an open invitation to you to celebrate local artists as they show their work at Tsawwassen United Church’s fourth annual Transformation Art Fair Weekend: The Art of All Ages, today through Sunday, featuring the SDSS Art Students/Seniors Portrait Project and Meg Neufeld, creative arts facilitator of Alongside You, as our guest speaker. Let’s celebrate the arts and give thanks for such wonderful gifts.

for the kids watching,” says Garrett. Auditions are set for June 13 and 14, starting at 3:15 p.m. both days, at South Delta Secondary’s Equinox Theatre. Those auditioning are asked to fill out and bring a form (available on the group’s Facebook page) and prepare about 30 seconds of

a song from a musical of their choice. “It’s not a musical, but there is music in the show,” says Merritt. The group is also looking for crew members and sponsorship help. Donations will be used for things like posters, costumes, props and set materials.

Rehearsals are set to start July 11 while the show is scheduled to run from July 22 to 25. The group’s Facebook page can be found at www. facebook.com/acneproneproductions. The group can also be reached via email at acneproneproductions@gmail. com.

Splashdown Park’s last season kicks off this weekend. It was recently announced this year would be the final one for the park and that “special events and giveaways” are in the works for visitors as a way to celebrate. Splashdown manager Harold Frederiks told the Optimist last week that, so far, there is one special event confirmed for the second Sunday in August. Summer Splash, which is held annually, features reduced rates and a percentage of proceeds goes to the Make-A-Wish

Foundation, Frederiks says. “At the moment, that’s the one that looks like it’s going to be our main event for the summer,” he says. While the details for this year’s event are still being worked on, Frederiks says in the past it’s included DJs, a watermelon eating contest, a three-on-three basketball tournament, a barbecue, dunk tank and performances. As for other special events for the final season, Frederiks says, “There’s still a lot of stuff in the works. For the last little while we’ve been focusing on getting the park ready, getting it open.” Splashdown will be

landmark for the Lower Mainland for 33 years now. We want to make sure we give people a great opportunity for another family experience, or group experience, or whatever that may look like for

the summer.” Frederiks says the park has had over 2.5 million people come through its gates and has had approximately 2,000 employees over the years. “We want to make sure we go out with a bang.” Splashdown opens its final season tomorrow. Hours are listed as 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the park’s opening weekend. Splashdown is located at 4775 Nulelum Way, Tsawwassen. Living it up like royalty in the nation’s capital COLLEEN FRIESEN

Optimist contributor

Queen Victoria must have been a pretty savvy woman. Sure, she had good advisors, but ultimately, on Dec. 31, 1857, it was up to the 38-year-old Queen to pick the capital of the Empire’s colony. Ottawa, a hinterland city that still held pig races in its muddy streets, seemed an odd choice. It was far away from the colony’s main cities, Quebec City and Montreal in what was then called Canada East, and Kingston and Toronto in Canada West. But with the Rideau Canal serving as a vital transportation link, lots of forest to protect it from possible American invasion, a tactical hilltop location overlooking the Ottawa River and, most importantly, strategically placed between the French and English speaking populations, the designated city quickly grew into its vision as a capital. As I checked into Ottawa’s castle-like Fairmont Chateau Laurier,

I found myself thinking about the Queen quite a bit. Given the royal surroundings and the view of Parliament Hill, I was sure she would have been impressed. It was October when I visited. I had come to visit Hanna, my late friend’s 18-year-old daughter. I wanted to give her a break from her residency life at the University of Ottawa. Besides, it was time for the next generation to learn the art of living well. Saturday morning looked like a perfect day for a bike ride. We went to the front desk with a bicycle rental brochure where the young woman gently removed the brochure from my hand. “I’ll call the valet to bring up the complimentary bikes.” Soon, we were wheeling our lovely white BMW bikes along the canal path. The leaves were flames of crimson, pumpkin and gold, swirling and cracking in the stiff winds that gusted off the canal. Briefly the skies darkened and gritty snow spun around our heads and then, just as quickly, it changed back to

bright clouds and sun. At Dows Lake we turned back to the hotel. It was time, as I’m sure the Queen would have agreed, for high tea. Our table was near the window. Overlooking the bundled pedestrians on the street below made our spot all the more comforting. The server came with the large tea trolley. Finally, we made our decisions. Hanna chose the apricot and peach blend. I picked my favourite scent of bergamot. Soon I was sipping the Fairmont’s own special Earl Grey blend. The three-tiered trays arrived. Truffled egg salad sandwiches, lightlysmoked ham and brie, salmon pinwheels… the tiny sandwiches started to add up. Then we moved to the upper tray; salted-caramel chocolate tart, poppy seed cake, the crusty softness of a macaroon. Groaning, we finally quit. After all, we were planning on attending the Poutine Fest on Sparks Street that night. The weekend went by too fast. There was shop-

ping, the National Art Gallery, the Parliament tour, the Byward Market, art galleries and the foot-tapping gospel Sunday brunch at Fatboys Smokehouse. But we both agreed that it was Saturday night’s dinner that topped the chart. At first I had been skeptical at the restaurant’s concept. Mexican and Asian cuisine? It sounded gimmicky with a great

The halibut in the fish taco starter was crisped in a thin skiff of tempura batter and placed on soft thin pancakes. I consider myself a fish taco aficionado, and these were the best I’ve ever tasted. The sashimi outdid the tacos, the green papaya salad topped the sashimi and when I tucked into the jas-

mine rice and butter curry lobster, I nearly cried. Life, like stormy weather, can knock you sideways. So when those skies clear, do yourself a favour…spend a little time living like royalty. Volunteers with the Boundary Bay Park Association recently announced plans for the 13th annual car boot sales. Starting June 11, the sales take place on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month through September.

First sale of 2016 season set for next Saturday

Delta’s annual Spring Clean-Up has come and gone but homeowners and apartment dwellers now have the ideal opportunity to sort through unwanted items to generate a little cash. No need to experience the hassle of your own garage sale as volunteers of Boundary Bay Park Association have announced plans for the 13th consecutive season of a popular South Delta summer event, the car boot sales at Centennial Beach parking area. The first sale is scheduled for Saturday, June 11 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sales will be held every second and fourth Saturday through September, weather permitting. Prospective vendors

can load up their vehicle and head to Centennial Beach parking area in Boundary Bay Regional Park. Reservations are not required and the only cost is $10, which provides two spaces — one for the vehicle and one for the goods. Vendors are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. and set up ready for opening at 8.30 a.m. Volunteers are on hand to assist and also have a few ground sheets as loaners. Closing time and dismantling of displays is noon, with the space to be cleared by 12.30 p.m. “Think about what will actually sell before you load up your vehicle,” Frank Rogers, president of the Boundary Bay Park Association, says to firsttime vendors.

“Be realistic about pricing but certainly don’t give it away and place price stickers on your items ahead of time.” Rogers also recommends vendors bring along a ground sheet to display items, bring appropriate change and arrive early so they’re well prepared. Boot sales always feature a variety of items, including household goods, garden tools, crafts, clothing, jewelry and more. In case of inclement weather, the sale may be cancelled and such information is posted on the association’s website at wwwboundarybayparkassociation.wordpress.com. Additional information is available by calling 604940-9296.

Are you and your boat ready for the boating season?

PROMOTING SAFE BOATING PRACTICES Provided by Canadian Safe Boating Council

14 million Canadians participate in recreational boating. Canadians who head out in any type of boat should have the appropriate knowledge to help them have a safe day on the water. There are five boating safety messages that relate to the most common boating related accidents:

1. The importance of wearing a lifejacket or PFD - PFD’s are now stylish, comfortable and practical, and are available for all ages and various aquatic activities. Remember, when boating, PFD’s have to be Department of Transport-approved in orange, yellow or red. 2. The dangers associated with drinking and boating. Think Before You Drink - Too much alcohol impairs your ability to think and operate your boat safety. The legal consequences are as serious for operating your boat under the influence as they are for driving your car in a drunken manner. 3. The importance of taking a safe boating course - Be Boat Smart... and operate your boat in an educated manner this summer - take a boating course. 4. Ensuring that you and your vessel are prepared before casting off. Don’t Overload - Do not load your boat beyond its capacity. The capacity plate is on every small boat and was put there by the manufacturer for your safety. If your boat looks overloaded, it probably is. 5. The risks associated with a fall into cold water. Hypothermia, caused by cold water, is an insidious killer thought to be responsible for half of all boating deaths. Hypothermia, which is the loss of body temperature, kills people in cold water by reducing their ability to swim or stay afloat. A person in cold water can eventually die of cardiac arrest if he is not rescued and rewarmed. If the hands are kept out of the water, they will stay warmer during the ordeal.

How are Teeth in One Day (All-on-4 implants) different from traditional dentures? All-on-4 dental implants are a permanent set of teeth that look and feel like your natural teeth. They are teeth that will be brushed and cleaned like natural teeth. They do not have to be taken out. They do not need adhesives. They are comfortable because they do not press down on your gums. All-on-4 implants allow you to experience the hot and cold of your food, as well as the taste because the palate is not covered by a plate. They also allow you to bite with increased force (up to 70% more), so you can eat all of your favorite foods again!

Rivals team up to win national title

Former B.C. Lions star Cory Philpot guides All-Star Youth to first place in Halifax

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Some key players from a longtime Delta minor football rivaly have come together to produce a national championship. The B.C. All-Star Youth team captured the U16 title at the recent 2016 Flag Football National Championships in Halifax by winning five of six games, including a 42-33 victory over Saskatchewan in the final. B.C. is once again participating in Football Canada sanctioned championships thanks to the newly formed B.C. Provincial Football Association (BCPFA) which was officially recognized by the sport’s national governing body back in April. The BCPFA currently represents four provincial gridiron organizations, including the B.C. Community Football Association that includes the South Delta Rams and North Delta Minor Football. The National Flag Football Championships presented the first opportunity for B.C. to return to the national stage with five divisions — U16, U18 and U20 Male, along with U16 and U18 Female. The eight-member B.C. team for the 5 aside games brought together top talent from five programs, including South Delta’s Michael Calvert and Billy Matwichyna. They were joined by North Delta’s Jalen Philpot, Tyson Philpot and Josh Haydu, along with Victoria’s Isaiah Cardilichia, Surrey’s Jamall Mensah and Graeme Melnyk from Coquitlam. Calvert and Matwichyna not only helped the Rams repeat as provincial Bantam

champions in the tackle version of the game, they aged up to see significant playing time with the Sun Devils at the high school level last fall. Calvert was a three-way starter by the end of the season, including quarterback. The Philpot twins star at Seaquam Secondary where they led the Seahawks to the provincial junior varsity semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion New West. The B.C. flag team happened to be coached by their father — former B.C. Lions star running back Cory Philpot who helped the CFL team win the 1994 Grey Cup and still holds the club record for most touchdowns in a season with 22. For years, Philpot coached his boys in North Delta Minor Football until they left the community ranks for Seaquam’s program. His North Delta teams’ biggest rival was typically the Rams. The flag All-Star Youth team presented an opportunity to bring the talented rivals together. Philpot even asked South Delta coaches Brent Calvert (offence) and Dan Matwichyna (defence) to serve as his assistants. B.C. opened the championships with a 33-17 loss to Saskatchewan, then rolled to decisive wins over Manitoba (5113), Nova Scotia (44-12) and Ontario (52-12). Another victory against Manitoba (41-7) followed in the semi-finals, before the boys avenged their earlier loss to Saskatchewan. Matwichyna came back from a wrist injury to haul in a one-handed TD catch from Calvert in the championship game, while a goal line interception by Calvert secured the

It showed in that first game but it was a learning experience and we made the proper adjustments for the final.” Philpot added flag football’s popularity has been surging in recent years and the door being re-opened for national tournaments provides further opportunities.

He also takes teams to tournaments in the U.S. through his All-Star Youth program and mentioned how Abbotsford’s Chase Claypool was initially scouted by Notre Dame at a 7-on-7 flag tournament. There was little time for the players to savour being national champs. They were back in action this past weekend at the provincial championships in Richmond where the team finished second to Kelowna in the U19 Division. The All-Stars Youth included another South Delta player — Douglas Jameson.

Since the Kelowna roster featured mainly Grade 12 players, the Okanagan squad will be representing B.C. in the U20 Division at the 2017 Nationals while All-Stars will be competing in the U18 flight. The boys turned their attention back to tackle football as the Sun Devils spring camp wrapping up this week with a scrimmage in Rutland Friday, along with the upcoming Zone Bowl provincial tournament in early July. That regional team will feature a number of local players and will be coached by Philpot.

Although a new minted realtor Harry has worked in and around the housing industry his entire career. A journeyman carpenter, he started his own company; built and sold many beautiful homes; worked in the renovation industry and project managed the construction of houses and large public buildings all over the lower mainland. Working in the housing industry for over 30 years has honed Harry’s knowledge of construction and residential development, as well as his ability to work effectively with people from all sectors of the industry. Harry listens, he is collaborative and bringing people together to achieve a common goal is second nature to him.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT US THIS WEEK “Working with the Chancey’s on our sale this Spring was a great experience. Their inside knowledge of the Ladner Market was a key to the overall success of the sale. Most important to us though was that the communication was clear, we were always understood and never had to ask for anything twice or felt any pressure. I already have and certainly recommend the Chancey team” - Rob in Ladner “Thank you so much Linda! Bob and you have gone above and beyond (as always!). Diane and I really appreciate all you have done for us.” Best Regards, Brian, Tsawwassen “When I decided to list my house I remembered so many examples, good and bad, of others’ experiences in selling their homes. There is a common denominator for success, the Agent. A good Agent sells and a not so good Agent sits and waits. The Chanceys are not sitters, they are SELLERS. I chose them because of their experience, knowledge and achievements in the Real Estate industry. There are few people who can keep up to their professionalism, determination and commitment to their clients. The results were phenomenal. Thank you. The Chanceys will always be my first recommendation in Real Estate.” *Blake Chancey Personal Real Estate Corporation, Bob Chancey Personal Real Estate Corporation, Linda Chancey Personal Real Estate Corporation, Brad Herzke REALTOR®

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandra, age 66 of Delta, BC. She is predeceased by her parents Harold and Audrey Semmens and brothers David and John Semmens. She is survived by her loving family - Husband David Camp of twenty-five years, Children Dylan (Christie) Scrase, Geoffrey (Amanda) Scrase and Step Children Alex (Jhanine) Camp, Estelle Camp; Granddaughters Olivia, Ava, Eleanor, Chloe, and Kamryn; Grandsons Maguire, Paitton, and Owen; Brothers Richard Semmens and Roger Semmens; Niece Kaitlin Semmens, Nephews Chris Semmens and Dan Semmens along with many other family members and close friends.

Family and friends were ever so important and central to Margaret’s life. Margaret loved nothing more than a lively and spirited discussion about all matters. She loved to hear updates of all her friends and family’s lives and pursuits.

Sandra had a huge heart and made everyone around her feel loved and special. Her love for animals was unyielding and she would never pass up the opportunity for cuddles with her Smudgy. The family would like to thank Dr. Kason along with the staff at Delta Hospital for their exceptional care of Sandra in her final days. In keeping with the wishes of Sandra, a private service will be held in the near future to celebrate her life. Donations made to the Delta Community Animal Shelter would be appreciated. Blessed are those who give without remembering and receive without forgetting.

SMITH - Richard 1940 - 2016

Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.

Richard passed away May 10, 2016 after a short battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed by his loving family, wife Joan, sons Brian (Kirstie), Greg (Cassie), grandchildren Megan, Emily, Collin and Hannah, brothers Don (Joyce), Doug (Lise), sister in law Sheila, brother in law Ron. A celebration of life was held for family and close friends on May 15, 2016.

COMMUNITY

Margaret was predeceased by her parents Sophia (Epanchin) and Ernest Mousley (Lonergan), her brother Ernest Mousley (Lonergan), and her niece Christopher (Kit) MacKinnon. Margaret was much loved and will be sadly missed by her surviving family - her sister Gaye (MacKinnon), her Lonergan nieces Patricia (Tricia); Barbara (Jim Byers); Nancy (John Larsh); Jan (Adam Waterous); her MacKinnon nephews Tom (Katya), Hugh (Kathie); Rob (Karen) and her long time and dear friend Marilyn Carmack. She is also survived by her many great nieces and nephews: MacKinnon (Erin, Tara, Ryan, Scott, Sean, Ross, Jane and Gulia) Byers (Michael, Kathleen, Christopher), Larsh (Matthew; Paul, James), Waterous (Connor, Riley, Liam). Friends and family are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Sacred Heart Parish - in the Chapel at 3900 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC V4K 3N5. The mass will be immediately followed by the internment at St. Peter’s Cemetery, 100 Richmond Street, New Westminster, V3L 4B3. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Margaret to the Poor Clare Sisters, 8589 Draper Road, P.O. Box 3370, Mission, B.C. V2V 4J5. The Poor Clare Sisters has been a community to which Margaret, her mother and brother Ernie were long-time supporters. They are a contemplative order of nuns who live a life of prayer, community and joy.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved mother, Vivian Fitzpatrick. Our cherished Mother passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 28th, 2016. Vivian is survived by her sons, Bob (Marilou), Terry (Elizabeth), daughters Kerry, Maureen (Gary), Paddy, and Erin (Terry), as well as grandchildren - Steven, David, Aaron (Lana), Sean, Shannon, Terri, (Michael) Candace, Jordan (Morgan), Justin, Rennie, Keenan (Bri), Konnar (Chris), great grandchild Kaelan and her sister Joan Johnson in San Francisco. She was predeceased by the love of her life Bob, daughters Shannon and Kelly, son-in-law John Munro. Vivian and Bob raised their children in Vancouver and later Tsawwassen. Our home was always filled with love, laughter and happiness, we could not have asked for more! Bob and Viv took annual trips every summer, piling all of us in the car to head up to Wood Lake for vacation. We all have wonderful memories of those times and as you can imagine many humorous escapades! They later had annual trips to Maui, and cherished their time there, especially when children and grandchildren were lucky to be able to join them. The “Fitzpatricks” have arrived was a well known announcement. Mom was often referred to in Tsawwassen as the well dressed classy lady. Not only did she have style, she carried herself with such grace, especially with her blindness, she never complained to anyone! Until her eyesight failed, she was very social and active in her community and always looked forward to meeting her friends and the “boys” at Petra’s. She was an avid sports fan and was often called by her children and grandchildren to get a recap of a certain game or her thoughts on a questionable call by a referee! A true testament of how special she was - she was a confidant to her grandchildren in their love life and future aspirations and goals....she will always be our special “Grandma Cloud”. Thank you to Dr. Hollinger for his compassionate care during mom’s final days. A very heartfelt thank you to Nanette, mom’s faithful companion/caregiver who never left mom’s side to the very end. Her children cannot express how much it meant to know mom had such special care and love. We will treasure her memory and profoundly miss our dear beautiful Vivian. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cystic Fibrosis would be appreciated. A celebration of Vivian’s life will be held at Sacred Heart Parish in Ladner on Thursday, June 16 at 11:00. A reception will follow at the Royal Oaks Social room, 1100 56th Street, Tsawwassen.

TRELIVING (TKATCHUK), Elaine Lorraine August 18th, 1941 - May 27th, 2016 In knowing she has returned to Heaven to look over us, we announce the passing of Elaine, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and auntie, after a long survived battle with MS. Elaine’s tenacity, spirit and wit will continue in those she is survived by; brother Alvin, daughter Cheryl, son Brad and wife Julie, granddaughters Candace, Samantha and husband Spencer, Ryann and Reese, and great-grandson James, alongside her nieces, nephews and cousins. Elaine and her family are grateful for the eternal support and love of Maria and Andy de la Cruz and the family of wonderful caregivers who tirelessly supported her. Elaine was born in Yorkton, SK and attended nursing school in Regina where she found loving husband and father of her children, Jim. Life took the pair to Edmonton, Lac La Biche and Penticton as they started a family and the first franchises of Boston Pizza. Elaine moved to Tsawwassen (1975) and then Ladner (1986) where she continued to be an active member of the community. Elaine loved warm sun on her skin, Ladner Market, gardening, canning, wheelchair square dancing and was never shy to express her thoughts. She is remembered as a strong nurse and powerful advocate for herself and her family, others with MS, the Delta Hospital and The Salvation Army. Elaine will join her father Fred, mother Nettie, partner Ken and nephew Chad in Heaven. Elaine will be remembered at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Drive, Delta, BC, with visitation being held on Wednesday, June 8th, 2016 from 6-8:00 pm.
