A reward is being offered, and some new information is coming to light, in the case of the stolen golden eagle. Ron Shore, who owns the multi-million dollar statue, is offering a $10,000 reward for

information that leads to its return. He confirmed that it is currently valued at $7 million CAD. The statue was stolen at around 10 p.m. on May 29 in the 4700-block of 57th Street in Ladner. Police this week confirmed they are looking for two suspects and two vehicles in the

ond bag containing a decoy. He said he gave chase and was dragged several metres after grabbing onto the suspect’s car. Det. Brad Cooper said investigators are still reviewing witness statements and surveillance footage. Anyone with any information is asked to call police at 604-946-4411.

Tsawwassen Mills is rapidly taking shape. Set to open in just under four months, the destination shopping mall at the Tsawwassen First Nation will be a centre that can easily be described as unique in B.C. Tsawwassen Mills general manager Mark Fenwick and development director Jeff Brown gave the Optimist a tour last week of the 1.2-millionsquare-foot mall, which will feature 200 stores, including 16 anchor tenants. Many of the retailers will be making their first appearance in B.C. For years, tenant news had been limited to Bass Pro Shops until Saks OFF 5TH and Designer Shoe Warehouse announced they would also be locating at the mall. More recently, the names of a couple dozen retailers

Located at the corner of Highway 17 and 52nd Street, the Ivanhoe Cambridge project will be mostly a fashion-oriented centre with a mix of outlet and other retailers, but it will also have a wide range of other products and services.

In addition to shopping, it will have an 1,100-seat food hall (they’re not calling it a food court) and full-service restaurants Milestones Grill & Bar and Montana’s Bar & Grill. Other features of the mall include a children’s play area and space where husbands can watch sporting events on big screens while their wives shop. “We want to make this a shopping experience where there’s something for everyone,” added Fenwick.

The mall is scheduled to open Wednesday, Oct. 5. It’s based on the company’s huge CrossIron Mills mall outside of Calgary and Vaughan Mills in the Greater Toronto area. Interior construction is well underway and tenants have started to take possession of their spaces to work on their unique finishes. Wood and metal paneling is being installed while the mall floor, which will be mostly high-end hardwood, has already been installed. On the

outside, facades are now being installed. Coast Salish native artwork, featuring contributions from members of the TFN, including Chief Bryce Williams, will be prevalent throughout the complex. The mall has created around 2,000 construction jobs and 4,500 permanent jobs will be available once it opens. A job fair is planned for June 25 and 26 in Vancouver, although some retailers have already listed job postings. Separated by a new road called Canoe Pass Way, Tsawwassen Mills will have Tsawwassen Commons as a neighbour. That 550,000-square-foot outdoor mall will feature 100 or so retailers, including Rona, Canadian Tire and Walmart. Some of the buildings are well underway, while work recently began on the Walmart site. It is also scheduled to open in October.

Delta gets tough with pot dispensary JESSICA KERR

j ke r r @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta is taking a hard line on medical marijuana dispensaries. Civic politicians recently upheld the denial of a business licence for a dispensary that has been operating on Scott Road in North Delta. Following the decision last week, the municipality issued a statement saying: “Delta will take all necessary steps, up to and including filing court injunctions, to prohibit medical marihuana dispensaries, until legally permitted by the Government of Canada.” The municipality received a business licence application from WeeMedical Dispensary Society on May 3. The application stated the intent of the business was to provide medical cannabis and other natural

health care services. Hugh Davies, Delta’s manager of property use and compliance, told Delta council he visited the business two days later. “There was marijuana visibly available in the display cases along with marijuana edibles and smoking pipes, T-shirts and other materials for sale,” Davies told council last week. He added the building inspector cited a number of building code deficiencies and issued a stop work order. Davies said he then sent a letter to May Joan Liu, director of the WeeMedical Dispensary Society, advising her the “activities taking place are contrary to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act of Canada and that the Corporation of Delta does not issue business licences

to unlawful businesses.” Delta’s zoning bylaws also prohibit medical marijuana production. A bylaw inspector has been visiting the site on a daily basis to issue a ticket and fine as long as the business continues to operate. The fines were initially $200 a day, however, amendments to the business licence bylaw approved later in May increased the fines to $1,000 a day. Liu appeared before council last Monday to urge civic politicians to approve the business licence. “Since the federal government has already announced that they are decriminalizing the use of marijuana and will be setting regulations in spring of 2017, allowing WeeMedical to continue operating will be considered a progressive step

forward in the direction of the future and not backwards where the only way to access medical marijuana for most people in in the streets where they put themselves in danger in some cases,” Liu stated in a letter to Delta. Liu said the store will continue to operate and is fighting the fines in court. “We just hope that we can stay open as long as we can because we feel we’re offering a service the community wants,” she said. WeeMedical already operates dispensaries in several locations in the province. “The reports are that it is fairly busy at that store,” Davies said of the North Delta location. Liu confirmed that since opening in April, the North Delta location has more than 500 members registered.

Counterflow considered for Alex Fraser Province exploring idea as 30-year-old bridge is having trouble accommodating traffic volumes SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Some major changes are coming to improve traffic flow on the Alex Fraser Bridge, changes that might also help ease driver suffering at the George Massey Tunnel. The four-lane tunnel has had a counterflow system for decades, which increases the number of lanes northbound and southbound from two to three during rush hour. That same idea is now being contemplated for the Alex Fraser, which turns 30 this year and has seen volumes increase sharply in recent years. It’s part of a series of improvements provincial Transportation Minister Todd Stone announced on Wednesday in Delta to help unclog congestion on the bridge and Highway 91. Stone said the province will introduce a system that will provide travel information for the various Fraser River crossings at key decision points so motorists can adjust their routes.

Although traffic is light in this photo, the Alex Fraser Bridge can be a parking lot at rush hour. It will also kick in an extra $10 million for an interchange at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue, which would bring the provincial contribution to a total of $20 million for the $30 million project. Other changes include more tow truck standby areas and increasing the frequency of highway patrols. The province will also continue to work with the federal government and Port of Vancouver to advance new interchanges at Nordel and Sunbury in

the areas of highways 91 and 17. During peak periods now, demand on the Alex Fraser exceeds capacity and results in queues of two to three kilometres and delays of up to 30 minutes, and in excess of two to three hours when there’s a traffic incident, said Stone. As far as how a counterflow system would work on the Alex Fraser, which has three lanes in both directions, Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton said

a number of ideas will be explored, including adding a seventh lane on the bridge by removing the raised curb on both sides. “That lane could then serve as a counter-flow lane. It wouldn’t affect the sidewalks because they are cantilevered, they basically hang off the edge. It would be a destination lane, the type of lane where once you’re in it, you’re committed to going a certain route like the East-West Connector,” he said. Hamilton noted it could

FILE PHOTO

alleviate traffic elsewhere, including the tunnel, because drivers often choose a “path of least resistance” on their commute. “Traffic is like water. People will take what they think is the easiest and quickest path to their destination and traffic usually has a breaking in period. When you look at the initial lane closures at the Pattullo Bridge, things have settled down quite considerably. People are exercising other options

and two-thirds of the diverted traffic from the Pattullo is actually taking the (tolled) Port Man (Bridge),” he added. According to the province, Highway 91 supports approximately 8,000 to 9,000 vehicles per hour in peak periods. This traffic is comprised of approximately six per cent trucks. During a recent Delta council meeting, civic politicians lamented the increased traffic on the Alex Fraser that’s been exacerbated by construction work at the Pattullo, reiterating a call to toll all crossings. “Might as well put on your tunes, because that’s what you’ll be listening to for two hours,” remarked Mayor Lois Jackson. Engineering director Steven Lan noted it all points to the fragility of the system and dependence on the bridges. • For more on the interchange project at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue, the public is invited to attend an information session on Thursday, June 23, from 3:30 to 8 p.m., at the North Delta Recreation Centre.

Big Lunch to mark royal birthday

St. David’s Church hosting fifth annual street party this Sunday ELIZABETH MURRAY

Optimist contributor

St. David’s parish in Tsawwassen will mark the Queen’s 90th birthday this Sunday when it holds its fifth annual Big Lunch on a date within the UK’s official three-day celebration of the Queen’s April 21 birthdate. Running from noon to 2:30 p.m., the church “street party” will be but a microcosm of The Patron’s (Queen’s) Big Lunch — a classic British street party lunch for 10,000 guests — taking place on the Mall in St. James’s Park, but St. David’s event will be none the less memorable in this far-flung corner of the Commonwealth. A tribute to Her Majesty by the Rev. Denise Doerksen will precede the cutting of a large decorated cake by parishioner Al Wakarchuk, whose birthday on March 28 makes him just 24 days older than

parish’s own Community Choir, and a parade of decorated bicycles will all add a festive air to a day of celebration. Britain’s co-founder of the Big Lunch said the event is based on a simple concept: PHOTO BY AL JAUGELIS “If we spend a St. David’s welcomes its neighbours to the Big Lunch, which has Sunday afternoon with our become an annual event. neighbours in June, we’ll build 51A Street have welcomed our sovereign. large numbers to “commu- friendships and stronger Moving the parish piccommunities that will last nic from a local park to the nity spirit by the plateful.” for years.” Some of the produce car park at the church for a Millions of people from St. David’s Jubilee celebration of the Queen’s across the UK take time Community Garden will Diamond Jubilee in 2012 out of their busy lives to help fill those plates — a was the start of a newtalk, laugh and eat with reminder of the success to-Canada way of bringtheir neighbours. Greg Domestic Short Hair, Black with White, Neutered Male Kitten, (Approximately 9 months old)

Greg, and we believe his pregnant girlfriend, were brought into a local veterinary clinic as strays. The clinic contacted us and we took them both in. Greg was severely thin, probably sharing most of his food with the expected mommy. Being brought in as a stray means that we don’t have too much history on Greg but due to his sweet nature we believe he was probably owned or exposed to people. Greg is a chatty boy who loves attention and takes full advantage of his two square meals a day. Greg is really easy going and would likely be fine in a home with another cat or kids. We are unsure how he would be with dogs but may be ok with a cat-savvy calm dog. We believe he would be okay with either an indoor or indoor/outdoor home. Come meet this goofy boy!

imes are certainly changing across the highway, but it remains to be seen whether that will also be the case in the town core. In less than four months, the mega malls at the Tsawwassen First Nation — the 1.2-million-squarefoot Tsawwassen Mills and the 550,000-square-foot Tsawwassen Commons — are scheduled to open their doors to usher in a new retail era in South Delta. The malls, particularly Tsawwassen Mills, are banking on attracting customers from throughout the region and beyond, but you can bet local shoppers will be prime targets. There has been much talk, and some amount of action, about how the existing commercial cores will coexist with these new retail behemoths, but perhaps the most interesting, to say nothing of controversial, response involves the Century Group’s proposed redevelopment of the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. The outdated mall would be in line for an overhaul regardless of the pending competition, but the prospect of having 300 shiny new stores across the way certainly makes redevelopment a greater priority. There are those people that contend Century Group president Sean Hodgins is using the necessity to revitalize Tsawwassen’s business district as leverage to increase density on the 10-acre site, and while there’s some validity to that line of thought, anyone who thinks that mall doesn’t require a significant facelift isn’t living in today’s reality. Much of the proposal sounds similar to the Oliva building at the north end of the mall, which has retail on the ground floor and condos above, and given the Earth remained on its axis after it was built almost a decade ago, it’s hard to see too much in the way of opposition being mounted to more of the same. However, the sticking point will be the highrise, anywhere from 12 to 20 storeys, that’s included in a proposal that’s to be submitted to municipal hall next month. There’s a definite line in sand in these parts when it comes to building heights and the numbers being bandied about by Century are at least double the point where opponents begin to set their hair on fire. It’s almost as if a highrise is the tipping point where Tsawwassen stops being a small town. Mind you, if you look across the highway, that’s already happening.

New era to begin for museum as it says goodbye to village

L

ast time we left the Delta Museum’s history at the official opening by Premier W.A.C. Bennett on Nov. 10, 1969. Thereafter the operation, management, staffing and profile of the museum was undertaken by the non-profit society assisted by a plethora of local volunteers. At the outset the museum was open to the public three days per week plus limited time on Saturdays. Exhibits were built displaying home furnishings of a bygone era, an Indian artifact room, a display exhibiting mechanical items and a history room depicting the development of the area. As with all non-profit societies, raising money was an ongoing topic and remains so today. Methods now in place such as gift shops, participation in community events, a telethon and outright appeals to the public and business communities had origins more than half a century past. With the benefits of local fundraising, provincial and federal grants, and annual grant requests of Delta council, in due course the society was able to hire professional staff to meet exacting museum standards. A decade after its official opening, and on the eve of Delta’s 100th birthday on Nov 10, 1979, the museum opened its archives for the preservation and public display of manuscripts, photographs, family history and municipal records.

Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND

Further space was required in the basement of the “old” municipal hall in Ladner, usurping hobby groups and the Delta police for this purpose. The glaring weakness of annual grants created instability in career expectations for professional staff. There was unease of tenure and guarantee of grant funding. A turnover of eight curators and eight archivists occurred in the first 20 years. Some local names from that list worth remembering include the aforementioned volunteer Mary Brown, Michael Duncan and Daphne Savage who assumed the title of curator, and in many ways founders of the museum’s high professional standards. In 1984 financial matters came to a head with Delta council during the museum’s annual grant application prompted by a 20 per cent increase in funding after no increase granted in preceding years. As one who was present at the council table during this criti-

cal moment, the outcome from the ensuing discussion improved the museum’s financial stability. Curator Daphne Savage, president Dorothy Brown and past president Matthew Rogers made it very clear that if the grant increase was not approved by Delta, thus permitting competitive salaries for professional staff, lack of funding would close the museum’s doors, notwithstanding countless hours of volunteer services and the society’s access to external funding. A council motion unanimously passed the grant request and future museum funding was included in Delta’s general municipal budget, not handled as a grant application. Until recently the museum has been operating on a five-year operating agreement. In 2015 Delta approached the museum’s board of trustees regarding a relocation opportunity and a new governance model whereby the Corporation of Delta assumes operations and becomes the employer of all museum and archives staff and the society will carry on in its capacity as a nonprofit society and owner of all artifacts and materials. This model has been approved by the society at a special general meeting. The new facility will be unveiled in 2017 and a new era begins. A good night to you, Ken. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Mess made of access roads

Editor: Could one of the designers, planners or engineers please explain the reasoning behind the mess they’ve made of both 56th and 52nd streets? We used to be able to access Highway 17 from both lanes on 56th Street without having to change lanes. The inside lane split for those wishing to go across Highway 17 into Ladner or to turn left towards the ferry, but it also continued to Highway 17. With the new configuration, traffic must be in the outside lane on 56th Street to access Highway 17. Traffic in the inside lane must move right into the outside lane. The outside lane then splits into two lanes and once on Highway 17, traffic in the outside lane must merge left as the lane they’ve turned into disappears. They have created two pinch points that will slow traffic and create possible accident points where

there was previously no problem. They have made two lanes turning left so, I assume the planners think that in spite of the future population increase, more traffic will be heading towards the malls and ferries than to Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, North Delta, New Westminster, the U.S. border, Burnaby, etc. What statistics did they use to come up with this plan? It’s no better at 52nd Street. They could have had two lanes from Highway 17 southbound at least up to Tsawwassen Springs. Instead they left southbound traffic with one lane and decided that northbound there would be a left turn lane, a right turn lane and two lanes going across Highway 17, one of those lanes dedicated for the new malls. They also decided to throw a few feet of dedicated bicycle lane northbound just before the intersection. From the design, cyclists are expect-

ed to ride down the sidewalk until approximately 50 feet from the intersection, where the bike lane suddenly appears. Trouble is, even the sidewalk doesn’t go all the way up 52nd Street so northbound cyclists must first ride on roads with no dedicated bike lane, move onto the sidewalk and just before the Highway 17 intersection move into a dedicated bike lane. All seems rather convoluted to me. I assume these are the same people who built the South Fraser Perimeter Road with curves incorrectly banked and also the same people who expect dropping a 10-lane bridge into the middle of a fourlane highway will alleviate traffic congestion. I question their competency and/or the quality of their education and training unless, of course, one of these professionals could explain the reasoning behind these decisions. Peter White

Tsawwassen is going the way of Richmond

Editor: A few months ago we sold our house in Richmond and escaped to Tsawwassen to get away from the skyscrapers being thrown up everywhere and traffic increasing in alarming numbers. What dramatic changes had taken place in the years we lived there. Now we see that the Delta council and the developers want to do the same thing that the

councillors in Richmond did — turn it into a cash cow for developers with no regard whatsoever to what the people wanted. Now Richmond is abound with highrises that are half empty and bought by speculators. What with the mega malls already under development on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands we have to face the possibility of yet another shopping mall. How many

local stores do we have to destroy to bring in more Walmarts and the like? Where can we go to escape this desecration of what is good? Instead of copying Richmond’s pattern, how about U.K.’s and build little clusters of bungalows for seniors wanting to downsize? We all know why this would never happen here as it’s all about the money. Patricia and Patrick Gannon

Tax incentives for what Hodgins wants to do anyway Editor: Re: Council approves revitalization bylaws, May 13 About a year ago, Sean

cil report offers him tax exemption to do what he was intending to do anyway. Curious. Tom Morrison

Local governments have been asked by the B.C. Lottery Corporation if they’d be interested in hosting a new gaming facility in two areas of the region BCLC says is not adequately served.

Communities to decide on new gaming facility south of Fraser JIM LIGHTBODY

Optimist contributor

Trust, in my opinion, is the most valuable business commodity and the first step in earning trust is to listen. This is why the B.C. Lottery Corporation is inviting several local governments south of the Fraser River to take part in our expression of interest process. We want to gauge whether their communities would be interested in hosting a gaming facility. You may recall the City of Surrey voted by a slim margin against hosting a casino in South Surrey in

2013. So why are we doing this again? First of all, we respect the authority of local governments to determine whether they want a facility in their community; however, we can’t ignore market opportunities, particularly given the pace of growth in the region. Furthermore, this isn’t just about one city — the identified market we are considering for a potential new gaming facility includes Delta and the Tsawwassen First Nation as well. We’ve monitored the marketplace in the south of Fraser region and have watched the population grow and change the last several years. There is currently one bingo hall and one casino with a racetrack that serve the identified market within the region. The recent improvements and re-branding of Fraser Downs as Elements Casino by our service provider, Great Canadian Gaming, have proved successful to date. We now TM The 12 GRILLED

A local tradition continues this weekend with the Tsawwassen Shrine Club’s 47th annual salmon barbecue.

T

he Ladner Village Market kicks off its 20th season on Sunday. “It’s grown beautifully. It’s hard to believe it’s 20 years,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the market organizers. The open-air market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue from Elliott Street to Delta Street and features vendors, local merchants and live outdoor entertainment. It draws big crowds to Ladner

Village and takes place seven times, rain or shine, throughout the season. Market dates fall on the second and fourth Sundays of the month along with a single date in September. Markets run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. McKnight, involved as an organizer for 18 years along with her husband Bill, says it has evolved into a well-respected market throughout the Lower Mainland. In 2000 the market adopted a “make it, bake it, grow it” guidance policy for new vendors. “It changed the feel of

the market a little bit,” she says, noting it meant no resale or wholesale products. Shoppers can expect to see items like plants, jewelry, art, photography and fabric along with a variety of food products. Each market gets a fresh feel to it as vendors come in and out throughout the season. Over the course of the summer there will be 30 new artisans and vendors at this year’s market, McKnight notes. Some of the offerings from new vendors include gluten-free food, hand-tied fishing flies,

hummingbird feeders, homemade pet supplies, and home and garden iron products. Live entertainment for Sunday’s market features the Marlin Ramazzini Latin Band (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the Shaken Not Stirred Jazz Trio (1 to 4 p.m.) Organizers are “allowing a little bit of wiggle room” for the first market’s setup because of the road work in Ladner Village. “The municipality has worked extremely hard to have the corner on 48th Avenue and Delta, and also Delta Street, ready to

go for us,” she says. Organizers are also looking for volunteers for its vendor parking and street prep teams. Those interested in volunteer opportunities can contact info@ladnervillagemarket. com. Visit www.ladnervillagemarket.com for more information.

Boyuan Han Bridge’s new independent arthouse film The Modern Angel is set to be screened next Tuesday.

Filmmaker to debut arthouse project

Tsawwassen’s Boyuan Han Bridge’s anthological film is about the ‘contemporary modern angel’ DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Tsawwassen’s Boyuan Han Bridge has a screening scheduled next week in Vancouver for his new independent film. He describes the film, titled The Modern Angel, as an “independent arthouse anthological film told in three chapters about the contemporary modern angel, or at least what that is to people.” Bridge, 22, explains the project started out as three short films, the first of which he submitted to the 2016 Canada International Film Festival, winning a

Royal Reel honour in the First Time Filmmaker Competition. He followed that by making two more short films. “But they all addressed the same theme. I ended up watching them back to back with a couple people and they were saying how they all kind of tied together,” Bridge explains. The Modern Angel is an “anthological depiction of alienation in the contemporary world,” a press release notes. The film follows three young women and “their interactions are observed as they get involved in situations sur-

rounding themes of love, compassion and artistry.” Bridge, a Simon Fraser University alumnus who earned a bachelor of arts in criminology and psychology, says he’s working on developing two more feature films. He became interested in filmmaking after taking an elective film theory course. The screening is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cinematheque Theatre, 1131 Howe St., Vancouver. Tickets for the screening are $10. Visit themodernangel.eventbrite.ca to purchase tickets. Tickets at the door are cash only.

Oil & Water a real treat for art lovers South Delta Artists Guild’s annual juried show features nearly 100 paintings at Gallery 1710 NOREEN FAIRWEATHER

Optimist contributor

There’s a special treat for art lovers running now at Tsawwassen’s Gallery 1710. This is the 13th edition of the South Delta Artists Guild’s juried Oil and Water awards competition, started in 2004 by then president Faith LoveRobertson. Fifty-three artists, 15 of them guild members, entered 213 paintings, from which 94 were juried to be shown in this opento-all contest. The result is a brilliant display of visual art generally agreed to make this the best-ever Oil and Water event. Why? Because the vivid quality of the artists’ work, its exciting variety and imagination expressed in so many ways makes this display of art probably the most interesting to be seen currently in the Lower Mainland. For this exhibition,

Academy showcases films

The Delta Film Academy is holding a Gala Showcase in Ladner next Wednesday. The event will feature short live action films entitled Soul Girl, The Test and The Wastelands as well as many other short works created throughout the year, all written, directed, acted and produced by current film academy students. The Delta Film Academy is a course within the Delta school district where industry professionals and special guests from Vancouver equip students for a seamless transition into the film industry. In the Film Production stream, students spend their classes learning how to make a film from screenplay writing, storyboarding, production planning to cinematography, lighting, sound and camera to editing and building visual effects. In the Film Acting stream, students learn how to understand and study a script to bring the characters to life using various techniques in voice, movement and tactics. They also gain coaching from

Tromans comes out on top at VSO competition DAVE WILLIS

Tsawwassen’s Joshua Tromans won the junior division of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music’s Future of Excellence Competition last month. Tromans, 11, said he felt overwhelmed at first but now feels really excited about winning. Tromans, whose goal is become a concert pianist, performed Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor at the competition. As a result of winning he receives scholarship funding to continue his studies, a solo recital in Alan and Gwendoline Pyatt Hall and a performance as soloist with the VSO during the 2016-2017 VSO season, notes VSO School of Music executive director Curtis Pendleton. “He works very hard, practicing every day, and has the strong support of his parents in developing his musical talent,”

Eleven-year-old Joshua Tromans recently won the junior division of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music’s Future of Excellence competition. Pendleton said in an email to the Optimist. Pendleton also noted Tromans is scheduled to perform as part of the Roland Piano Orchestra at the school’s Orpheum Theatre Showcase Performance this weekend. Tromans has been a student at the VSO School

of Music since he was six. In a letter of recommendation to the school’s bursary committee, Troman’s teacher, Sergei Saratovsky, says his success at the competition is a “welldeserved result of Joshua’s dedication, enthusiasm and passion” for classical music.

Tips for sticking to that fitness regimen Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

You know the hardest part of a workout? Walking out your front door. Just the simple act of starting is the most challenging exercise in a workout (second hardest: burpees). However, once you get your runners on and your butt out the door, it’s pretty much clear sailing from there. And then if you implement one (or all!) of these tips, you will get there a lot faster. That’s a trainer’s promise. • Workout in the morning. We have more willpower in the morning. Think of willpower like a gas gauge. Through the course of the day we slowly use this “gas” while

making all those right choices for our health and our person. With each decision and choice we make, the gauge goes down a little bit. This is why most diets are broken in the evening and not at breakfast. It’s also why the couch looks way more inviting at 7 p.m. than it does at 7 a.m. If we leave exercise until the end of the day, it’s too easy to have life take over, leaving us to push that workout to the next day, until eventually the “next day” never happens. Get it done first thing in the morning (before the messy parts of day-to-day living begin) and you are far more likely to succeed in creating fitness as a habit. • Prepare ahead. From eating healthier to working out to mental and spiritual health, planning ahead and scheduling what you need to do to crush your goals will get you there faster than any other tip I can give you. Plan that 10 to 15 minutes every day to meditate. Set appointments for your workouts, plan and prep your meals for the week ahead. Leave

no stone unturned. • Put a pin in your excuses. If you are one of those individuals who can never find the time to exercise because you are too busy, I want you to play a game with me. Tomorrow set aside 20 minutes to workout and then at the end of the day ask yourself if those 20 minutes hurt you for time management, or did they energize you? I bet my over-priced Tsawwassen home they energized you. • Order counts. When in the gym use dumbbells, barbells and machines, and in that order. Our smaller stabilizing muscles are recruited the highest for dumbbell exercises, but they also fatigue faster than our larger muscles. So while they are fresh, use the tools that will stimulate them the most first. It is also recommended (for beginners) to train your bigger muscles first (the legs, back and chest muscles), and then the smaller supporting muscles at the end of your workout (biceps, triceps, shoulders, abs). This is because our smaller mus-

cles also help with our big muscle movements too. • Recover faster. Nothing can be more of a buzzkill to your fitness program than sore muscles. To help keep your muscles fresh try adding BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) to your water at each workout. BCAAs help reduce muscle breakdown and conserve tissue during intense workouts. Another muscle-soreness buster is tart cherry and blueberry juice. The antioxidants found in these berries have been shown to significantly reduce muscle soreness. And do some sort of light exercise when the muscles are sore. The worst thing you can do is be still. • Finish faster with more intense exercises. If you are short on time intense workouts like tabatas and HIITs are the best workouts for you. • Don’t isolate. Forget focusing on just one muscle group and instead use big body moves like squats, lunges, pull-ups and presses. These types of moves will recruit more muscles in one exercise,

giving you more bang for your fitness buck. • Warm up the right way. Don’t think a five- to 10-minute jog on the treadmill will get your muscles ready for a strength workout, or a sport for that matter. While it’s a good start, you also need to add bodyweight movements and dynamic stretches to the mix so you target the muscles you will be using in a full range of motion. • Skip the machines. You will build your functional strength faster and better if you use dumbbells, cable machines and other weight-based tools that require you to stabilize your body and dictate the plane of motion. A study at Georgia State University found older adults using exercise machines actually had their strength measures for day-to-day activities decline by 3.5 per cent after two years of training. While the participants were able to lift more on the machines through the years, this strength did not translate to their daily activities. Reason:

machines do not require your stabilizer muscles to work. You simply sit in a machine and let the machine support you and this in turn is not transferable to how our body’s muscles work in real life. • Stop trying to spot train. We cannot perform a certain exercise for one body part in hopes of burning the fat solely from that area. A great example are ab crunches. Researchers at the University of Virginia found it takes 250,000 crunches to burn one pound of fat — that’s 100 crunches a day for seven years! Instead, what will burn the fat faster is a consistent weekly workout plan that includes at least three times a week strength based moves and two to three times a week cardio, accompanied with a healthy eating plan. Yes, I know, absolutely boring. But trust me, the research supporting boring is astounding. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer who can be reached at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

don’t expect to get much benefit from it personally. The older you get (so I’m told…), the easier it is to focus on the past. Planting a tree looks to the future. It is refusing to be limited to memories of past experiences and accomplishments. It is refusing to settle for the status quo. It is choosing to live life facing forward. I want to be the kind of person who plants a tree at 100. Ironically, Abraham lived to 175. He had decades of enjoyment of that tree he planted. Who knew? Face forward. Plant a tree. Abraham, the father of both Jews and Arabs, was an exceptional man. We read about his life in Genesis (the first book of the Bible). There is an interesting, though easily missed, verse about Abraham that seems to reveal something about his attitude toward life: “Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the Lord, the Eternal God.” (Genesis 21:33, NIV) The key part of this verse is Abraham’s worship, but what jumped out at me was that he planted a tree. There’s probably a connection between planting the tree and worshiping the Eternal God, but there were also practical

June 15 is Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the Delta Police Department’s victim services unit and Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere will be out in the community to provide information to seniors and their caregivers. The two groups are hosting a special event at Tsawwassen’s KinVillage Community Centre next Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., joining with other community partners to provide resources and assistance. At 10 a.m., Sgt. Dave Schaefer will

give a talk on frauds and scams, while at 11:30 a.m. a representative from the Tsawwassen branch of Vancity will give a presentation on preventing financial elder abuse. Next Thursday, DPD and DOVE will be at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara (7050 Scott Rd.) at noon where Const. Dustin Classen and A/Sgt. San Uppal will talk about immigration fraud and economic crimes, which often impact seniors. Both events are free and open to all residents.

Tips For Prospective Horse Owners

Children often dream of waking up one morning and finding their own horse or pony in their yards. Some people are able to make this dream a reality and own these beautiful animals. Whether raising a horse for pleasure or profession, it is important to know that caring for horses can be labour-intensive. The reward for properly taking care of a horse is a healthy and well-trained animal. But horse ownership is a significant and expensive responsibility, so it is important that prospective owners understand what they are getting into before they make any final decisions. Breed The first to consider when mulling horse ownership is the breed. If you are unfamiliar with horses, it is best to research different breeds online and visit horse breeders and owners. Perhaps workers at a stable or farm nearby can guide your choice. There also are forums devoted to horses and care. Some recommended breeds for first-time owners include quarter horses, paints, and morgans. However, all horses are individuals and may have their own unique personality traits. Acreage and housing Horses are large animals and will need room to exercise and roam. They require a corral or pasture to stretch their legs, so a potential horse owner will need a relatively large property to give a horse the space it needs. In addition to the corral, the horse will require a shelter from the elements. A shed or stable should be at least 10 to 12 feet in both width and length. The height of the stable should be a minimum of 8 feet. This stable will provide shelter in both the cold and heat. When establishing a pasture, be sure it is fenced in with a highly visible fence that is tall enough so that the horse cannot easily jump it. The fence should be clearly visible so the horse does not mistakenly try to go through it, risking entanglement or injury. Feeding The average saddle horse weighs roughly 1,000 pounds if not more. The animal can eat anywhere from 17 to 26 pounds of feed per day. Feed is a combination of grain, hay and pasture, but salt also should be made available to the horse. If the weather prevents grazing, supplemental hay will be needed. Keep in mind hay bails can weigh up to 85 pounds. They also will take up considerable space. This is something that needs to be factored into the space requirement for a horse. Feed and water troughs can be purchased at livestock supply stores or be made from repurposed buckets and barrels. Horses need plenty of fresh water to drink and the water trough should be checked and cleaned regularly to maintain a sanitary environment. Tack and saddles Depending on how you use the horse, you will need saddles, reins, bits, stirrups, cinches, spurs, ropes, and collars. Saddle bags and cushions may be needed if you will be on the horse for long periods of time. In addition, pitchforks, shovels, brushes and grooming supplies will be needed to keep the stable and horse clean and comfortable. Veterinary care Research and develop a relationship with a veterinarian prior to purchasing a horse. Horses require routine vaccinations and examinations, and deworming is necessary to control internal parasites. Hooves will need to be trimmed regularly, so it behooves owners to establish a relationship with a qualified farrier. The vet may recommend farriers in your area. Horses are magnificent animals that can bring joy and companionship. But those interested in owning a horse must recognize that such ownership is a significant responsibility unlike more traditional pet ownership.

Midget Isles provincial contenders 2014 Bantam champs become first Delta team to win Coquitlam tournament The Delta Islanders hope to be back at the Coquitlam Sports Centre a month from now and celebrating again. The Islanders solidified their status as one of top contenders at the 2016 provincial championships by becoming the first-ever team from Delta to capture Midget A1 Division honours at Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse’s Trevor Wingrove Tournament. The event started off as the Dogwood Tournament back in 1984 before being renamed four years ago in honour of the admired player who lost a courageous battle to cancer. It typically showcases the top talent in the province at the Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget A1 levels and attracts teams beyond the Lower Mainland, including Vancouver Island, Alberta and the US. The Islanders’ road to the championship included round-robin wins over Port Coquitlam, USA Boxla and the Juan de Fuca Whalers. Haiden Dickson, Mitch Sansberg and goalie Jarvis Dashkewytch were awarded the respective game MVPs. Delta then moved onto the semi-finals where it faced the top seeded team from Alberta and doubled the Calgary Hornets 12-6. Captain Mark Yingling was selected the game’s MVP. The result sent the locals off to the championship game to take on league rival and hosts Coquitlam. The Islanders relied on the strong play of Dashkewytch in net to open up a four goal lead and went on to post a solid 10-5 victory. Dean Kishuichi collected game MVP honours. Among the presentations was the Tournament’s Most Inspirational Award going to Dashkewytch. Rounding out the Islanders’ roster are Jake Cantlon, Jared Molici, Jackson McCleod, Max Stalling, Jon Grieg, James Grieg, John Woodward, Arjun Singh, Mitch Godlonton, Owen Borthwick and Zack Kyriacethys. The team also relied on Bantam A1 call-ups Ben McDonald and Rhys Porteous for the champi-

onship game. The core of this team has tasted plenty of success before — winning the Bantam A1 provincial title back in 2014. The depth of talent was reflected in the selection process for the B.C. team heading to Midget Nationals this summer with five players and one alternate named to the roster — the most of any association in the province. The Islanders are coached by Stephen and Darron Alexander, Chris McCluskie and Tanner Taylor. The manager is Jeff Stalling.

Invaders enjoy bronze medal finish on home turf

South Delta 2004 Invaders made the most of home field advantage by capturing bronze at their own tournament held at Hawthorne Park. Saturday’s torrential rain forced tournament director Sandy Selinger to compress the entire tournament schedule into Sunday. Organizers managed to pull it off in what proved to be an exciting day of action for everyone. The Invaders went 2-1 in round-robin play — producing wins over the 2005 Richmond Islanders (6-5) and the Cloverdale Fury (15-0). The lone setback was a hard-fought 5-1 decision to the 2004 Richmond Islanders. The girls proceeded to the medal round where they squared

the 2004 South Surrey/White Rock Thunder defeat the 2004 Islanders. According to Invaders head coach Ed Selinger, the girls worked extremely hard and showed true Invader sportsmanship and teamwork during the tournament. The team includes: Lexy Granum, Megan Moubert, Mackenzie King, Maddie Selinger, Tyler Lenton, Jadyn Weel, Erin Gushel, Abby delaCruz, Julia Burden, Taylor Wigley, Emily Mills and Lucy Greene. The bat girl is Kenzie Wigley. Rounding out the coaching staff are: Kevin Burden, Syd Lenton, Geoff Moubert, Kiana Brown. The team manager is Julie Wigley.

Pirates prevail in Kelowna

Delta Falcons Force battled the Hawks Selects during BC Field Hockey’s U13 Club Provincial Championships at Minoru Park in Richmond. The two-event featured nearly 300 players. No scores were recorded.

Ladner Pirates Pee Wee “A” baseball team made the most of their trip to the Okanagan — capturing the West Kelowna Diamondbacks Tournament. Coached by Tim Bakker, Corey Edge and Wayne Carleton, the Pirates entered the event on a hot streak after going 8-2 to conclude their regular season. They carried that momentum into Kelowna with outstanding play in their opening two games to produce decisive wins against Penticton and West Kelowna. The Pirates then faced the top West Kelowna team last Saturday afternoon in 35C degree heat. With some great hitting and determination, they rallied back in the final inning to earn a spot in the championship game Sunday against the undefeated Penticton Tigers. On another hot day, the final was a tight game against a strong opponent.

Penticton enjoyed a 4-3 lead after two innings, but the Pirates battled back with key hits to take a 6-5 lead going into the fourth. The Tigers responded with four runs to take a 9-6 lead. The unfazed Pirates roared back like they have done all year to score three runs in the bottom half of the fourth to tie the game going into the final inning. With some great pitching and defence, the Pirates held Penticton scoreless in the fifth and quickly went to work in the bottom half of the inning. With timely hits and great base running, the Pirates scored the winning run to capture the tourney. This was truly a team victory with terrific efforts from Dylan Flaming, Tygran Painter, Zach Nakagawa, Mathew Smith, Nate Rohwer, Ryder Stojkovich, Tyson Sandulak, Matthew, Pawlikowski, Jackson Bakker, Ryan Carleton and Layne Edge.

OUR CLIENTS ARE TALKING! I am delighted to take this opportunity to commend Re/Max Progroup Realty Group, and two of its Realtors in parKcular. My recent experience with selling my home and purchasing a new residence was very exciKng and, as always, somewhat stressful. However, it was not fraught with suspense, disappointment, and frustraKon as it well could have been. For this, I would like to give hearLelt and sincere thanks to my realtors, Aileen Noguer and Joanne Evans. This is what our clients are saying about us this week “Working with the Chancey’s on our sale this Spring was a great experience. Their inside knowledge of the Ladner Market was a key to the overall success of the sale. Most important to us though was that the communication was clear, we were always understood and never had to ask for anything twice or felt any pressure. I already have and certainly recommend the Chancey team” - Rob in Ladner “Thank you so much Linda! Bob and you have gone above and beyond (as always!). Diane and I really appreciate all you have done for us.” Best Regards, Brian, Tsawwassen “When I decided to list my house I remembered so many examples, good and bad, of others’ experiences in selling their homes. There is a common denominator for success, the Agent. A good Agent sells and a not so good Agent sits and waits. The Chanceys are not sitters, they are SELLERS. I chose them because of their experience, knowledge and achievements in the Real Estate industry. There are few people who can keep up to their professionalism, determination and commitment to their clients. The results were phenomenal. Thank you. The Chanceys will always be my first recommendation in Real Estate.” “We used Blake as our REALTOR®. He was Awesome! He was always patient and wanted us to be happy at all stages of selling and buying! He sold our house fast and helped us find our perfect forever home. He always had our families best interest at heart. Our small son loved the days he got to see Blake and his white truck. We recommend Blake and the Chancey team to anyone buying and or selling their home. We are forever grateful for his hard work and can’t wait to have him over to our new home.

Ruby was the third child born to John and Jennie (nee Preston) O’Rourke of Hodgeville, SK. After graduation, Ruby took a business course in Regina before moving to Fort William, ON where she worked in a defense plant. There she met and married Frank Wood in August, 1945. The couple moved to British Columbia in 1948, where they worked until retiring in 1972. On their River Road farm, they lovingly cared for the animals, a shared passion, and welcomed a number of nieces and nephews who came to visit. After Frank’s passing, Ruby lived independently until 2010. Following a brief stay at Waterford in Tsawwassen, Ruby moved to West Shore Laylum where she felt well cared for and in the heart of her cherished community of Ladner. Aunt Ruby had a deep love of children. She zeroed in on positive qualities of each of her nephews and nieces, giving some nicknames (The Boss, Little Miss Two Fingers) or remarking on their particular attributes. She remained an avid conversationalist and storyteller to the end, interested and interesting. Always ready to engage in spirited conversation about social issues and current events, she made a lasting impression on all she met with her bright mind and forthright manner. Ruby was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank, on March 3, 1991, her parents, John (1974) and Jennie (1980) O’Rourke, her siblings Victoria Idell (1988), Robert (1994), Preston (1995), Douglas (2008), and nephews, James David O’Rourke (2008) and Bruce O’Rourke (2011). She is survived by her brother, Lionel, of Santa Clarita, CA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews spanning three generations and two countries. Ruby died peacefully at her home in West Shore Laylum on June 5. Ruby did not want a Funeral Service; instead, friends and family are invited to an informal tea at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Saturday, June 11th, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the SPCA or Delta Hospital Foundation.
