Dear Optimist Readers: The Delta Optimist is proud to have been an integral part of this community for almost a century. A great deal has changed in South Delta since the \rst edition of the Optimist was published way back in 1922 and there have also been signi\cant shifts in the media landscape over that time, particularly in the last decade or so. Throughout it all the Optimist has been a constant, a hub that not only informs the community but keeps it connected as well. The relationship this newspaper has with the people of South Delta goes far deeper than just as a purveyor of the news: We facilitate the exchange of opinions and we’re a vehicle that allows local businesses to interact with their customers and organizations to make contact with the public. We’ve also been a proud supporter of a great many community events for almost 100 years. We are part of the fabric of South Delta and we take that responsibility seriously. Times are changing and the business model that has sustained this newspaper for many years must also adapt in order to ensure the Optimist is a sustainable enterprise into the future. Our advertisers can no longer shoulder the entire burden. To that end, we are introducing voluntary subscriptions as we look to diversify revenue streams. A voluntary payment of $5 per month, or $50 for the year, will allow us to maintain door-to-door delivery, which is an increasingly expensive undertaking and a major cost for any newspaper. Let me stress this is entirely voluntary and all South Delta households will continue to receive the Optimist at their doorsteps. Voluntary subscriptions will also allow us to improve the quality of the Optimist, ensuring South Deltans get even more information about the goings on in their community. Subscribers will be recognized for their support every month with deals at local merchants, prize draws and more. The \rst month offers discounts at Home Hardware, Unforgettable Gifts, the RunInn, McDonald’s, Otter Co-op and Pharmasave that have a total value of $50 or more. Coupons will be emailed to subscribers every month. We hope you see the value the Optimist provides to both the community and to your everyday lives, and that you will voluntarily subscribe. We believe receiving the Optimist twice a week is worth the cost of a latte or a loaf of bread and we hope you do as well. We look forward to your support and to continue serving the good people of South Delta well into the future. To subscribe, please visit subscription.delta-optimist.com (no www) or call the of\ce at 604-946-4451.

MK plan moving forward
Council sends proposal for 2.2 million square feet of industrial space to hearing DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
MK Delta Lands’ proposal to develop an industrial park near the Burns Bog conservancy area received preliminary approval from Delta council this week and is moving on to a public hearing next month. The plan would see a 62-hectare (155-acre) property near the junction of Highway 91 and the South Fraser Perimeter Road developed, creating nine industrial lots between 3.6 hectares (nine acres) and 9.2 hectares (23 acres) in size. “This site could add 2.2 million square feet of modern industrial space to North Delta to expand business, jobs and the tax base,” MK Delta Lands president Joanne Barnett said during a presentation to council Monday. The site is zoned industrial but still within the Agricultural Land Reserve. Barnett said the property is ideally located for supporting goods movement and a modern logistics distribution centre due to its proximity to the United States border, Deltaport container terminal, industrial docks and facilities along the Fraser River. As part of the proposal, MK Delta Lands would transfer 131 hectares (328 acres), over three
Members of the public will get a chance to have their say on a proposed industrial development adjacent to Burns Bog at a hearing next month. parcels, in the area to the Corporation of Delta to be protected against future development. A 77-hectare (193-acre) parcel on the west side of Highway 91 would be earmarked to be included in the ALR. MK Delta would also give $11 million to Delta with $6 million going towards agricultural improvements on Westham Island and the remainder towards transportation upgrades and community amenities as determined by council.
Council also received a petition, totaling over 1,000 signatures, from the Burns Bog Conservation Society opposed to the development proposal. Society president Eliza Olson has previously said that “every time a piece of bogland/peatland the size of a soccer field is destroyed, it releases the same amount of carbon as you would driving your car around the world three times.” Coun. Jeannie Kanakos said she has “grave con-
cerns about the impacts of the project” and that a key issue for her is the withdrawal of land from the ALR. Delta CAO George Harvie noted any proposed inclusion or exclusion of ALR land would ultimately be reviewed by the Agricultural Land Commission. Coun. Sylvia Bishop asked about the total fill that would be required for the site and the impact it would have on the land’s hydrology as well as the
impact of truck traffic on local roads. Council received a letter from Ministry of Agriculture staff taking issue with ALR land removal and one from the Delta Farmers’ Institute noting it would agree with the site being removed from the land reserve subject to certain conditions, including there be a net gain to the ALR. A public hearing is set for July 5 at 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Seniors’ Centre in North Delta.
Development wasn’t envisioned years ago SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta’s community plan and the Agricultural Land Reserve are the best barriers against strip and commercial development along the Annacis Highway. That was the promise of Delta planning consultant Art Cowie in September of 1986 as the Alex Fraser Bridge, also known as the Annacis Bridge, opened at the same time. Alderman Karl Moser earlier that year expressed concern that farmland would be under pressure by developers wanting to put in commercial or service development along
the highway, which nowadays is more commonly referred to as Highway 91. Cowie admitted there would be some pressure on land bordering the highway and Nordel Way, but felt the combination of the ALR and the Official Community Plan, which also designated the area as agricultural, would discourage developers from trying to change the zoning. For developers seeking industrial land, there was already relatively inexpensive, serviced parcels available along River Road, he said 30 years ago. “Why go in and fight for an area when industrial land is available and commercial is designated else-
where?” asked Cowie. He made those assurances almost 20 years before a large portion of Burns Bog was purchased by four levels of government for protection as the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area, which is bordered by large strips still designated as farmland. The new South Fraser Perimeter Road would come years later. Now in 2016, with industrial land in much shorter supply, there’s an application by MK Delta Lands to develop a large parcel bordering the conservancy area. It’s in the ALR, but the company is hoping to exclude the property for industrial
development. It would add a larger parcel nearby to the ALR. MK Delta Lands also needs to have the site redesignated in the OCP from agricultural to industrial. Municipal planning staff note the site historically has not been farmed. The application continues to draw opposition from groups and individuals insisting the property in question is part of Burns Bog and should have been included as part of the conservancy area when the government purchase was made, and question why it wasn’t included. The Burns Bog Conservation Society has been leading the charge,
but others like environmentalists Susan Jones and Anne Murray are also saying unprotected bog properties need to be added to the conservancy area to ensure the longterm viability of the bog. They also warn about the fragmentation of the ALR. Delta council recently approved legislation to promote the development of industrial zoned land, but it also aims to protect the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area from development that may occur on adjacent property, including requirements for buffer zones as well as lighting and noise controls to minimize the impacts on Burns Bog.

Greg, and we believe his pregnant girlfriend, were brought into a local veterinary clinic as strays. The clinic contacted us and we took them both in. Greg was severely thin, probably sharing most of his food with the expected mommy. Being brought in as a stray means that we don’t have too much history on Greg but due to his sweet nature we believe he was probably owned or exposed to people. Greg is a chatty boy who loves attention and takes full advantage of his two square meals a day. Greg is really easy going and would likely be fine in a home with another cat or kids. We are unsure how he would be with dogs but may be ok with a cat-savvy calm dog. We believe he would be okay with either an indoor or indoor/outdoor home. Come meet this goofy boy!

An outpouring of love and support for Morgan Levins and her family resulted in more than $11,000 at a recent fundraiser at The Landing. The 12-year-old Ladner girl was diagnosed earlier this year with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. The diagnosis was made after a lump was found on Morgan’s collarbone that continued to grow in size. Morgan was taken to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver for treatment and is currently awaiting her next surgery in midJuly. Family friend Kirsty Jansen and an army of friends all stepped up to make the June 4 fundraiser happen, but Jansen TM The 12 GRILLED
Greg Domestic Short Hair, Black with White, Neutered Male Kitten, (Approximately 9 months old)
is quick to point out that without the support from the community, it wouldn’t have been such a success. “It was certainly more than we ever would have hoped for,” Jansen said. “We had so many people who contributed to the silent auction and raffle. It was heartwarming the number of people who showed up and gave cash or entered the draws and were just there to support. It was really emotional.” Jansen said the money raised came from a silent auction, raffle, cash donations and The Landing also contributed a portion of the sales for the evening. Jansen’s employer, Envision Financial, also contributed more than $300 after the staff held a Jeans Day.
“There were people who heard about the event who were just going into the liquor store, but wanted to support, so we ended up putting a donation bin in the liquor store later in the evening,” Jansen recalled. The idea for a fundraising event started when another family friend, Chad Murphy, wanted to hold a meat draw at the pub. “It grew from a little meat draw into this huge fundraiser,” Jansen said. “I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful group of friends who rally behind one another no matter what and I know the Levins family feels the same.” Jansen also wanted to recognize Laura Thomas, Rebecca Davis, Erin Northcott, Kim Demidoff and Candace Flannigan
for organizing the event, and offered thanks to Lindsay Maxwell and The Landing staff. As for Morgan and her family, Jansen said they are overwhelmed by the generosity of the community. “Morgan is doing really well and her treatments are going well. She seems to be keeping in good spirits, but she is doing well considering. I know this evening really lifted her spirits.” A GoFundMe page was created to help Morgan’s parents, Kerry and Carsen Levins, pay for expenses, including gas, parking at the hospital and care for their son, Max, who’s a toddler. • June 14, 1:22 a.m., 600-block Boundary Bay Road: The officer observed a vehicle that was swerving between the lanes of traffic and failing to respond to traffic lights. After being pulled over the driver exhibited symptoms of alcohol consumption: he was unable to spell his own name and had slurred speech. A roadside breath demand was issued and the driver complied, resulting in a “FAIL” reading. Driver issued 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, vehicle towed and impounded for 30 days. • June 14, 4:34 p.m., 1100-block of English Bluff Road: Complainant reported youth throwing eggs at people and traffic from the balcony of a residence. Officers attended the residence and spoke to the youth and homeowners to remind them it was not a laughing matter and the possible consequences. • June 15, 11:21 a.m., 700-block of 53rd Street: Complainant’s bike stolen from bike rack where it had been left and locked. The bike is described as a green, 27-speed Men’s Giant. Officers viewed available surveillance video that showed a person wearing dark pants, a top with white sleeves, and a white hood or do-rag/ bandana walking way with the bike. Bike added to police databases. • June 18, 1:25 p.m., 100-block of Centennial Parkway: Complainant reported earrings stolen from her residence, possibly during a small gathering the previous weekend. No indication a break and enter had occurred. Complainant provided with file number for insur-
ance purposes. • June 18, 6:54 p.m., 5100-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant heard a loud bang outside his residence and observed a collapsed traffic sign at the intersection and a grey pick-up truck speeding away. Police patrols unable to locate the vehicle, no licence plate obtained. • June 20, 1:04 p.m., 55th Street and 12th Avenue: Complainant reported that a vehicle blew through a red light in the intersection. Vehicle stopped by police later and found to have inactive insurance in addition to the traffic light offence. Registered owner/ driver issued violation tickets for both offences.

• June 20, 5:27 p.m., 4800-block of 55B Street: Complainant observed a male walking away from her residence with a package that had been on her
doorstep concealed under his jacket. The complainant confronted the male and he gave the package back, claiming he just wanted a cardboard
box. Male was joined by a second male and they walked away. Area patrols conducted but unable to locate suspects. All items recovered by complainant.

top me if you’ve heard this one before. It’s a story about a company that acquires parcels of land, property that holds a certain sensibility with neighbours, with an eye to one day developing some or all of the holdings. It’s forced to sit on its assets, although over the years it floats various development proposals, both formally and informally, without any luck. At some point it recoups a sizeable chunk of its initial investment by selling a portion of its acreage to government, which is keen to expand the scope of ecologically sensitive land in public hands. The company makes what looks like one final push for development, but after its initial proposal is rebuffed, it changes gears by reworking the application and sweetens the pot by promising to deed the remainder of its holdings to the municipality. The message to civic politicians is not only does the proposal fill a need, but by turning over land not earmarked for development, it puts an issue that’s been simmering for decades to rest once and for all. No, it’s not the Century Group and its almost three-decade odyssey to see something happen on the Southlands, although that synopsis would definitely apply to Tsawwassen’s most contentious piece of real estate. Instead, it’s MK Delta Lands’ efforts to develop the various pieces of property it owns adjacent to the Burns Bog conservancy area. The company has considered all kinds of uses for the land over the years, everything from a horse racetrack to a relocated PNE to a shopping mall, but it looks like its industrial park proposal, which received preliminary approval from Delta council earlier this week, could be the one that finally gets the necessary traction. MK Delta appears to have taken a page out of Century’s successful playbook, right down to the clincher, the lure of both municipal hall and the community never having to deal with the issue again. Not only will civic politicians judge the application on its merits, but the enticement of finally putting it all to bed will undoubtedly figure prominently in the deliberations. At this stage, the application has only received preliminary approval, so there’s still one big hurdle to clear if this story is going to have a similar ending.
Wondeful memories of a kid enjoying summer holidays

ell, here we are again, on the verge of summer vacation. I have been fortunate to be privy to the excitement of the summer break with my large crew of young Project Pickle farmers. Hundreds of them have planted over 1,000 cucumber seedlings over the past couple of weeks and they have been happily munching on greens, peas and carrots on their school farms. They are incredibly excited about the summer break and it has been a lot of fun listening to their plans and sharing stories of summer fun. But what happened to spring? As I get older, the seasons seem to meld in a big blur and all I really know is that I am losing a battle with time. I can’t really remember winter except that I recall Christmas was in there somewhere. My January Visa bill proved this. My daughter is off living in Victoria so there is little planning needed anymore to think of activities to keep school-aged children active and busy. If you do have younger children at home, there is also the question of whether to keep the kids occupied or to just let them hang out? I would suggest that a little of both would be a good compromise. Our family would always

spend a couple of weeks on the Sunshine Coast in the summer but when we were at home there was plenty of opportunity for misadventure by just chilling with the other kids in the hood. As long as you had a decent bike and some change in your jeans, you were good to go. Popsicles were seven cents and a Ton of Gum was 10 cents, which would leave plenty of dough for things like a bag of peas and a pea shooter (read long fat straw). There were plenty of “corner stores” in range to buy these essentials. The five-cent pea shooter would last most of the summer and the 25-cent bag of peas would be good for a whole day. Whomever invented this past time was a genius. When you are 10, there is nothing more rewarding than filling your mouth with
peas and then blasting them out of the straw at the rate of 60 peas per second at your best friend’s head. Riding bikes while pea shooting was especially challenging, but if you could do it, you would gain the utmost respect from your peers. After a fun day of doing nothing, when the idea of the Internet was barely a concept, pea shooters and bike riders would be home for dinner. On most nights, dinner in the summertime lasted about 3.5 minutes. When you were allowed to stay out until dark, that meant more fun before bed. Mom and dad said dark, not sunset, so factoring in twilight meant you could get up to no good until 10 or so. We played a game called 6-60 on our block. It was like a team version of kick the can. There were plenty of awesome hiding spots on the block and we would have 20 or 30 kids of all ages playing almost every night. A lazy sleep in would prepare us all for another day of summer bliss. I fondly remember and miss those carefree days. Honestly, the best days of my life. Make them your kids’ best too. thought to the notion of municipal belt tightening so the taxpayer, many of whom are on fixed incomes, can receive some relief to help out with the household budget. If Robertson considers this line of policy thinking as representative of Delta council, I will give serious thought about who I will vote for in the next election. Maybe it’s time for a new slate of council members who are more in tune with the financial constraints and stresses that many homeowners are facing nowadays. Ken Arding
Sidewalks turned into obstacle courses
Editor: As a longtime Tsawwassen resident, it is time to put pen to paper. I love to walk the neighbourhoods and streets of Tsawwassen. Walking is such a pleasure to do in this community. Most homeowners take great pride in their gardens
here. There are a few, though, that are not considerate of those who enjoy walking on the sidewalks in front of their homes. Just this morning, my walk demanded I either duck low hanging branches, skirt around thorny rosebushes or step onto the
road with traffic coming and going both ways. Perhaps these homeowners could go the extra mile when cutting their lawns to clean up the boulevards and sidewalks in front of their properties. Thank you for your kind consideration. Margot Millen
Foul smell from sod farms is making her sick
Editor: I can’t stand it anymore! The obnoxious, disgusting, foul smell from the sod farms is more than an ordinary person should have to endure. Sit on our patio with guests or fam-

here. We have been residents of Ladner since 1986, long before the sod farms came. There are noise bylaws; can’t there be smell bylaws? Helen Forrest

Editor: Re: Price spike not reflected in this year’s property tax bill, Community Comment, June 17 I take great umbrage with Ian Robertson’s insensitive, ill-conceived and biased op-ed piece regarding municipal property tax increases. When comparing my tax bill to last year, I find a whooping increase of over 15 per cent. As a member of this community, I don’t feel I will be receiving 15 per cent more services. In fact, I wonder where my money will be going. While Robertson com-

The Kinsmen Club of Ladner-Tsawwassen and Knights of Columbus North Surrey Council #4767 have recently come forward to support Delta Hospital. Their generous gifts will go towards purchasing equipment for Mountain View Manor, Delta Hospital’s extended care unit. Since 1977, Mountain View Manor has provided a home for seniors who require complex care and can no longer live safely or independently at home. Home to 92 residents, services are provided in a home-like atmosphere and are customized to meet the unique needs of each individual. A new Tuesday night cycling group for women is looking for additional riders. “A lot of women want to go and ride but when they get in a group with guys, the guys are so much faster,” said group coleader Melanie Whittall. “This is really a safe place for women to learn the skills of road riding, have some camaraderie and be a group.”
They meet in Tsawwassen at the Delta Bike Company on 12th Avenue. Ten women took part in the group’s first ever ride earlier this month. “I’m hoping and I think there’s lots more out there,” said Whittall, noting they’ll go over how to ride as a group, how to road ride and some safety signals. “If they’re training for a Fondo, if they’re training for a charity ride, this is a great place to start, a great
place to find other people to ride with.” The group, which is part of the Boundary Bay Cycling Club, is for road bikes only. Co-leader Clarissa Zinger noted beginners are welcome and the group has a “no drop” rule, meaning riders aren’t left behind. The group has set up a Facebook page at www. facebook.com/groups/ BBCCLadies. They meet Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.

MOUNTING Industrialization of strategically located Delta envisioned half a century ago
Delta farmland has long been eyed for industrial purposes.
Richmond Coun. Harold Steves (second from right) believes development will follow the opening of the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel.

is views could well prove prophetic. Back in 1968, John Southworth, executive secretary of the B.C. Harbours Board, said, “The only sure way of preventing problems Delta will have to face over the next 50 years of Deltaport and related development is to stop the world.” He made those remarks at a meeting of the South Delta Taxpayers’ Association during a time when there was much talk about the opening of the Roberts Bank superport as well as the potential industrialization of adjacent farmland. South Delta had just become home to the region’s garbage dump two years earlier when Southworth talked about what the community could possibly face, but when told there should be laws to prevent
spoilage of the land from oil slicks, coal dust and refuse from chemical industries, he responded, “You cannot prevent these things from happening.” Now, could this semi-rural community really end up as the industrial armpit of the Lower Mainland? That’s the concern as worries persist that pristine farmland could be converted to warehouses to serve container port expansion planned for Roberts Bank. South Delta is already home to the country’s busiest container port and an adjacent coal port, and a highway was cut through
prime farmland a few years ago to better serve those facilities, but adding recent fuel to the fire was a report commissioned by the Port of Vancouver that warned the current supply of trade-enabling land in the Lower Mainland will likely be exhausted within a decade. That report also concluded industrial land near major rail and road networks is needed for warehouse and distribution centres so goods movement can be done efficiently. “Specifically, sites with proximity to Deltaport, Canadian National Railway or Canadian Pacific Railway Inter-modal yards, and Highways 1, 91, 99 via the South Fraser Perimeter Road, all have the potential to host a major logistics hub,” the report stated. South Delta just so happens to meet everything on that checklist. The report found that as far as Delta is concerned, it’s well located relative to port transportation infrastructure but has just 11 per cent of the total regional industrial inventory. “Although Delta is a geographically large community, because of the Agricultural Land Reserve and other constraints, it has a proportionally smaller share of both industrial lands and industrial buildings.” The report also noted, “Delta, with its excellent location relative to PMV and excellent access to the highway network, is an ideal location for future industrial development. There are limited amounts of quality vacant industrial land in Delta and there is a pending land shortage for the region.” When the report was made public last fall, Michael Farrell, a vice-president and industrial specialist at
The public has voiced concerns for years over the impact port development will have on Delta.
Avison Young, said it was clear the region is headed for an industrial land crisis. A previous industrial overview report by Avison Young noted Metro Vancouver’s industrial land shortage remains top of mind for industry, the port authority and local and provincial governments. “With Metro Vancouver estimates placing the region’s remaining supply of industrial land at 10 to 12 years based on current consumption patterns, and industry forecasts predicting ongoing annual increases in container traffic and cargo shipments, a compromise solution is increasingly likely to be legislated rather than mediated,” that report stated. Last year, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington reported hundreds of acres of prime farmland are still threatened by industrial land speculation after option deals made by a private developer for a large area within the ALR had been renewed, leaving the possibility open for those properties to be converted into warehousing and logistics to serve port expansion. First making public those deals a couple of years earlier, Huntington said she worries
June 24, 2016 The Delta Optimist A13 And while Kinder Morgan’s contentious pipeline expansion bid to Burnaby received conditional approval this spring, alleviating concerns the company would be forced to look at alternatives such as South Delta as a fallback option (for now anyway), it won’t likely remove concern among local environmentalists or the municipality of Delta. After Alberta Premier Rachel Notley
caused a stir last fall by suggesting South Delta as a possibility where the Kinder Morgan pipeline could terminate, Emsley said it appeared something was going on behind the scenes. “Let’s assume for a moment that the port builds the pod (for Terminal 2), the manmade island, and once they’ve got that they’d say, ‘Well, OK, we’re going to make it an oil terminal, perhaps with some storage out there too,’” he warned. The Port of Vancouver has said Roberts Bank is not on its radar for a bulk liquid export facility, but Delta council is saying it’s concerned about “not at this time” as an answer. Up the Fraser River, a controversial thermal coal export facility is planned at Fraser Surrey Docks. Environmentalists are worried even more coal could end up there after the U.S. government rejected a proposed coal terminal near Bellingham, Washington. An application has also been put forward to build an LNG export terminal adjacent to FortisBC’s expanding LNG plant in South Delta. Directly across the river on the Richmond side, a jet fuel tank farm has been approved and will be built, creating concern by some in Delta about a fuel spill devastating the Fraser estuary.

Youngsters descend on fire hall

A soggy Saturday forced all the activities at the Delta Fire Department open house at Hall 1 in Ladner to be held inside. Youngsters like four-year-old Markus Nilson (bottom) were still able to take part in the Firefighters Challange and slide down the fire pole in the mini house.

here are events planned in Delta to mark Canada’s 149th birthday next
Friday. First up is the annual celebration at Diefenbaker Park hosted by the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club. The party kicks off at 10 a.m. and will include a DJ playing music and taking requests, face painting and wood creation crafts, while Delta Gymnastics is coming with a portable
trampoline, explains coordinator Kim Carswell. He adds Miss Teen Delta will be in attendance giving out Canada Day memorabilia. A cake cutting is scheduled for 1 p.m. with local dignitaries in attendance. The club’s Streetside Community Kitchen will be onsite serving up hotdogs and refreshments. Hotdogs are free but donations to the club are appreciated, Carswell notes. Thrifty Foods provides the cake and hotdogs and Dairy Queen supplies hotdogs as well, he notes, adding Westshore
Terminals and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority are corporate sponsors. The event continues until 2 p.m. Diefenbaker Park is located at 5579-1st Ave., Tsawwassen. Kirkland House puts on its annual Canada Day celebration from noon to 4 p.m. A special addition to this year’s event will be a large quilt that is a map of Canada and features local scenes from across the country. There will be a concession available by Kirkland Scouts so guests can have
a picnic at the event. The Harris Barn will be open as well. There will be spinners and weavers inside Kirkland House. Performances throughout the day will include the Circle of Friends band, Tina Hoell as well as the Delta Police Pipe Band. Peter Chipman will lead the singing of the national anthem at 1 p.m. The heritage house is located at 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner. Canada Day celebrations take place in North Delta at Chalmers Park from 5:30 to 10:45 p.m.
Highlights for the evening include children’s crafts and games, barbecue food vendors and an official ceremony at 5:45 p.m. Live music performances by Purple Pirate at 6:30 p.m. and the March Hare Band at 8:45 p.m. will take place before fireworks finish the evening. The park is located at 11400-76A Ave. The usual Canada Day celebration hosted by the Delta Museum in Ladner Village is not taking place this year due to road construction and the fact the museum is moving to a new home.
Ladner church hosting benefit concert for hospital Who doesn’t love the harp and who doesn’t love Delta Hospital? This Sunday the two will come together at a benefit concert at All Saints Anglican Church. A visiting ensemble from Japan will be performing a benefit concert at 2:30 p.m. at the church
on the corner of Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive. The group will be using piano, harps, dance and chorus to perform music from such composers as Bach, Gershwin and Beethoven. The concert at All Saints will be the second of three
the group is performing to benefit hospitals around the region. “We are so grateful,” says Delta Hospital Foundation executive director Veronica Carroll. “We appreciate how people in Delta find so many different ways to support and donate to our wonder-
ful hospital.” A portion of the proceeds will also support the All Saints outreach programs. Admission is by donation.

Green dances her way onto movie set
South Delta Secondary student makes film debut as ballet dancer, a role she knows very well DAVE WILLIS

Maude Green’s first time being involved in the film industry has been “incredible,” she says. “It was very intense, but very rewarding and fun,” says Green, a member of this year’s graduating class at South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen. Green, who lives in Point Roberts, plays the role of Allegra in Center Stage: On Pointe, a movie that premieres on Lifetime TV tomorrow at 8 p.m. The movie tells the story of a group of talented dancers who compete for spots in the prestigious American Ballet Company. Acting in the movie was an eye-opening experience for Green. “I had no idea what it was going to be like. I was really nervous beforehand but I definitely learned a lot on the set from the director and the other actors.” Green has a plenty of

Ballet School in Boston as well as summer programs
at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Massachusetts
and Canada’s National Ballet in Toronto. When Green was 14, she moved to New York City to train at the Joffrey Ballet School. “I don’t think I could have done this without all that experience. It was good because I finally got to use it. I have this … movie to show that all of that experience was worth it,” she says. “Dancing professionally was always something that I wanted to do. But I realized being in a ballet company wasn’t the path I wanted to take. So it was really cool for me to actually dance professionally, it was in a movie and I was getting paid for it.” Center Stage: On Pointe is one of the sequels to 2000’s Center Stage, a film that’s familiar to Green. “Being a dancer, growing up, that was one of everyone’s favourite movies.” Green played the main character in the SDSS production of Legally Blonde the Musical last year.

Art-full advice: Be creative and be yourself An Art-full Life
MEG & MARY ANN
W
hat is creativity? Everyone has the potential to be creative and as humans, it is one of our defining qualities. We have a natural desire to express ourselves. Although we may share similar interests with one another, it is both our personality and events in our lives that shape how we look at the world. As a result, two people may be looking at the same image, reading the same book or hearing the same music, but each will have unique reactions and come to different conclusions. Creativity is the ability to take what exists and change it into something new using our own skills, interests and perspectives. So where do we begin? Creativity is a force of nature - it moves us. How can we translate what
moves us into something tangible and meaningful? Starting the creative process can be as easy as asking ourselves a few simple questions: What am I drawn to? What is my intention? What do I want to convey? The best part about these questions is that there is no right or wrong answer. We can spark our creativity by meeting different kinds of people, learning new skills, meditating, being inspired by artists from the past and from those currently around us, attending arts and culture events, or simply participating in an activity that interests us. Being intentional about our focus can also spark imagination. Limiting ourselves to using only a few colours, a single phrase or one particular object can be great jumping off points to get our creative juices flowing. A simple stroke of the brush, the first line of a story or poem, or even deciding what type of knitting pattern to use will invite creative thought patterns and soon our ideas will begin to take on a life of their own. We also need to remember to enjoy the creative process, make mistakes and push aside our insecurities. It’s OK to not know the end result of our creative process before we
start. If we become too fixated on the end result, we can become frustrated when our expectations are not met along the way. This stunts the growth of new and interesting ways to approach our subject. Our lack of self-confidence, or our “inner critic,” thrives on our fears, makes us feel cautious, uptight and intimidated in our outward expressions.
How can we combat this? We need to remember to be ourselves. Rather than trying to be someone we’re not, or fixating on “how it should be done,” we need to shift our focus on what feels right for us. So let’s kick up our heels, try something new and do what we love. Let the creative process unfold, step over insecurities, and be content but curious with how we see
and interpret the world around us. After all, we are all uniquely wonderful and beautifully made. Unleash your imagination. You don’t know what you are capable of until you try. Meg Neufeld is a cultural anthropologist, practicing mixed-media artist and program director at Alongside You, a health organization that offers a multi-disciplinary
approach to health, and where creative activity is encouraged amongst people of all abilities for overall health and wellness. Mary Ann Burrows is an artist, and the president and founder of Artists in the Village, a non-profit society that focuses on inspiring creativity within each other and the community through connection, expression and awareness.

Ten fitness blogs you should really follow Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
I am addicted to reading fitness blogs. Every morning I pull out my iPad and read a least six while enjoying my breakfast. It’s my morning ritual. I follow some fantastic ones too. Blogs chalked full of the latest science and research. Others containing some very healthy and very tasty recipes, and others that make me, personally, strive to become a better person, a better trainer and a better writer. However, with the great also comes the not-sogreat, including blogs written by people with some fine looking abs, but with
absolutely no fitness background. Some of these “bloggers” do not even write their own blogs. Instead, they buy their fitness columns from a number of different websites online and then put their name in the byline. How do these people become so popular? Fitness experts who have never even trained a real person in their lives and do not hold any industryrelated credentials whatsoever? You can thank social media. This is where these socalled experts pose looking all amazing and beautiful in hopes that we will be dazzled by their glutes so we forget to check to see if they have any actual certifications. And, sadly, most of us fall for it. I don’t blame people, though. I have followed some too. It’s hard not to as beauty always seems to trump brains in this industry. To help you follow some great blogs, ones that are
written by competent individuals who know what they are talking about, I have complied a list of my top 10 (in order). Give them a follow and start your morning learning better health and fitness too. 1. Nerd Fitness www. nerdfitness.com Steve Kamb’s blog is perfect for people who want their fitness jargon broken down and explained in normalperson speak. His blogs are super interesting and he uses a lot of Lego and Star Wars to get his point across, so how can you not love that? 2. Charles Poliquin www.poliquingroup.com Poliquin is one of the world’s most accomplished strength training coaches and his blog is ideal for the serious athlete to the weight lifting enthusiast. His blogs are science-based, with all studies cited. 3. Nia Shanks — Lift Like a Girl www. niashanks.com Shanks is a strength
and conditioning coach whose blog is dedicated to teaching women how to build better bodies in a sane and simple way. She blogs about a number of topics ranging from her favourite recipes, to the best workouts for women, to empowering women. 4. Breaking Muscle www.breakingmuscle. com This site has a number of different bloggers contributing to it (including Shanks), and is best suited for athletes, Crossfitters and serious weight lifters. 5. Tony Gentilcore www.gentilecore.com Gentilcore has been featured in a number of publications ranging from Men’s Health to Muscle and Fitness and his blog is the one to hit for nononsense information (read his: The Difference Between Good and Bad Stiffness, awesomely good and funny). He takes no prisoners and has the credentials and cojones to back his words up. 6. Girls Gone Strong www.girlsgonestrong.
com This fun website is run by nine women who are experts in their respective fields. You will find information ranging from pregnancy and working out to how to reduce your risk of injury. 7. Nutrition Striped www.nutritionstriped. com McKel Hill, MS, RDN has one of the most beautiful blogs on the Internet. Her site is dedicated to showing people how to live and feel their best with better nutrition. She has wide range of blogs from informational (Should We Supplement?) to recipes that never let me down (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Banana Bites). 8. Oh She Glows www. ohsheglows.com Angela Liddon’s blog is a go-to if you are vegan, and/or if you are in need of some energizing, plantbased recipes. Over one million unique readers visit her blog each month, and she is a New York Times bestseller with her amazing Oh She Glows
Cookbook. I am obsessed with her recipes — and I’m not even vegan! 9. Naturally Ella www. naturallyella.com After her father had a heart attack, Erin Alderson decided to stop eating fastfood and processed meat and embraced becoming vegetarian. Since then her blog, which features whole food, vegetarian recipes, has become the go-to site for people looking for recipes featuring real food, without counting calories or carb grams. 10. Marc and Angel Hack Life www.marcandangel.com Marc and Angel Chernoff are professional coaches who have been recognized by Forbes as having “one of the most popular personal development blogs.” Their blog is the place to head to if you are looking for proven strategies for finding lasting happiness, success, love and peace. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer who encourages you to visit her blog at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

Tsawwassen guitarist Carter Low is a co-grand prize winner in Lee Ritenour’s 2016 Six String Theory Competition. Low, 21, says it “was a big surprise” and “a true honour” to win. He won in the blues guitar category and was one of the two entrants to tie for the guitar grand prize. Low will get to perform at the “legendary” Blue Note Tokyo venue in Japan, record a track for Ritenour’s upcoming
album in California and will receive a Yamaha guitar in Montana. The trip takes place later this summer. Ritenour is a Grammy Award-winning guitarist. His contest requires entrants to submit two YouTube videos for each category they enter. “This year’s winners were an amazing diverse group of musicians and sometimes the first place, second and third were separated by a few votes,” he wrote in a post on the contest website. “All of the judges wrote back to
us that this year was very challenging because of the amazing amount of talent and diversity.” Low, who is currently in a country band, has been playing guitar since he was 13. He counts guitarists Robben Ford, Tim Porter, Todd Taylor, Derek Trucks and Michael Landau among his influences. Low says he’d like to thank musicians Blaine Davies, Chris Hind, Tyson McIlroy and Ken Davies for helping out with his video entries and notes his parents have supported him 100 per cent.

YOUR ESTATE PLAN A STEP-BY-STEP APPROACH Your Situation The financial implications of our passing and the devastating effect of a poorly planned estate distribution process are simply too great to ignore. By not planning ahead, we risk leaving our families burdened with financial difficulties, legal problems, increased stress and delays in the settlement of our estate. Estate planning doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a simple framework that will make it easy for you to work through the estate planning process. Step 1: Accumulate information Compile a detailed list of assets and liabilities (include the current value and the original cost of each asset). Note whether those assets are individually or jointly owned. You’ll also want to gather copies of important documents (your Will, Power of Attorney, etc.) and financial statements. Your Will speaks for you upon your death. It truly is the cornerstone of most estate plans. Step 2: Prepare a pro-forma estate valuation Determine how much you’ll be leaving to beneficiaries. Start with your net worth, and then list the projected costs and fees associated with your estate (include income taxes, capital gains taxes, probate fees, executor fees, etc.). Step 3: Identify issues surrounding distribution Ask yourself: does my intended distribution accurately reflect my wishes? Is it “fair” to my heirs? Will my heirs have to sell assets to cover taxes and fees? Do I have an Executor? Is he or she the appropriate person for this task? Your answers should provide you with direction when it comes time to decide on specific estate planning strategies. Step 4: Review opportunities and strategies
Capture Your Family’s Story Every Life Has a Story. Living Family Memories Lets You Tell It. Stories are the fabric of lives, and the foundation of families. Share your unique experiences, inside jokes, life lessons, and nuggets of wisdom, songs, final wishes, and more through your own Living Memories message. We offer professional videos of: • Executor Support Messages • Stories, Memories, & Biographies • Philosophies & Life Lessons ...and much more.
Now you’ll want to explore specific estate planning opportunities that address your individual financial situation. You may want to consider amendments to your Will, establishing a trust fund (or including provisions for one in your Will), or rearranging ownership of assets. You may want to investigate life insurance, or establish the framework for a charitable giving program. Step 5: Implement the plan You now have a general idea of how to achieve your estate goals. It’s time to talk to a Raymond James Estate Planning professional to refine your ideas and put them into action. Just remember, estate planning is an ongoing responsibility. Even if your personal financial situation doesn’t change, changing regulations may render your plan obsolete. So make sure to establish regular meetings to review your estate plan. Securities-related products and services are offered through Raymond James Ltd., Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund. Insurance products and services are offered through Raymond James Financial Planning Ltd., which is not a Member-Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

Whatever happened to civility and respect? On a recent bus ride from Swartz Bay to Victoria, I was (mis)treated to 60 minutes of a one-sided counselling session as my seat mate — cell phone glued to her ear — dispensed advice to a friend on how she could attain spiritual enlightenment. I guess common courtesy wasn’t part of the spiritual path of the favourite guru she was parroting. Whether it is students listening to iPods during a class lecture, athletes throwing temper tantrums when officials rule against them or reality TV shows saturated with backstabbing and treachery, rudeness and disrespect are now accepted.

While governments have a role to play in building the common good, even the best of political systems cannot, in a fallen world, achieve the community we crave. That is because the ideal of a healthy community, free of hostility and cynicism where humans flourish, is ultimately grounded not in the state and its power to legislate, but in religious values and principles such as neighbour love and our dignity as children of God. If my neighbour is made in the image of God, then he is deserving of my respect and courtesy. If I see the face of God looking back at me, then I am obligated to follow the biblical injunction to love my neighbour as myself.

Alex Farquharson caps 17th year with Delta by winning four medals at nationals
MARK BOOTH

Alex Farquharson can’t imagine his life without Delta Gymnastics. Afterall, it’s been that way for the past 17 years. “My parents signed me up when I was three after they saw me jumping around. They thought it was a safer option,” laughed the 20-year-old from Tsawwassen. “I eventually caught the eye (of men’s head coach) Mike Hood and was in the competitive program by the time I was six.” Farquharson has gone on to become one of the most decorated athletes in club history. His latest accomplishment was four medals in the National Open category at the Canadian Championships in Edmonton, including a silver all-around. He added two more silvers on floor and high bar, as well as bronze on vault. It was his seventh trip to nationals. He has hardly rested on his laurels, returning to his regular training schedule under his coach Shu Jun Gao, even with no major competitions on the horizon. “I love this so much that I really can’t get enough of it,” he smiled. “I go home and I’m typically bored until I leave to come back to train again.” Farquharson also knows he is in for a dramatic change from the routine he is so accustomed to. He says this is the perfect time in his life to pursue a career in the Canadian Armed Forces. That will mean nearly three months of basic training back in Quebec. He will then continue on with specialized training in combat engineering or

At the same time, he will continue to chase his gymnastics dream, beginning another four year cycle towards the 2020 Summer Olympics. It just likely won’t be in the training centre he is so familiar with. “I’m just hoping I will be close to a gym or even
gym equipment,” he chuckled. There will likely be a couple of months off but I will definitely find a way to work around (my military committments) and keep training. “I just don’t want to think it won’t be in Delta because it has been my home for so long. But you do have to come to a point of realization that this may be my last year here.” After competing at the
High Performance level last year, Farquharson opted to step back to National Open to polish up certain techniques and also add to his skill set. He took all-around honours at Provincials before his strong showing in Edmonton. More importantly, he feels he is a better gymnast moving forward. “With this being an Olympic year, we knew

For the first time, a team from Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball has captured the Western Lower Mainland Pee Wee “A” Interlock Championship. The Cardinals rolled to a 17-2 record to finish 2.5 games ahead of their nearest competitor. They then produced four straight victories on the playoffs. pack following a pair of weekend home losses. They were edged 8-6 by Victoria on Saturday, then dropped a 10-7 decision to Nanaimo on Sunday. Ladner wasted a four goal performance from Mike Berekoff in the defeat to Victoria as the visitors took control in the
second period. It was the middle stanza that also made the difference against the Timbermen who scored five times to open up a commanding 8-3 lead. The win pulled the Timbermen within one point of the Pioneers with a game in hand.

Megan White & Daniel Hunte r Are pleased to announce their engageme nt which took place May 20, 2007 while in Hawaii.
December 11, 1926 June 18, 2016
In loving memory of my beloved husband Eugene Flamont who passed away June 26, 2006. They say time heals all sorrows And helps us to forget, But time so far has only shown How much we miss you yet. To us you were so special What more is there to say, Except we wish with all our hearts, That you were here today. Forever loved and sadly missed, Your loving wife Karen and family.
OBITUARIES
Congratulation Megan & Dani s el
Wedd ed ing to take place March 9, 2008
It is with a broken heart that we sadly announce the passing of Margaret Montgomery (Chorlton). Not only have we lost a mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, we have lost our best friend and confidant. She cannot be replaced. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Duncan in 2013. She was born to a Delta pioneer farm family, raised in East Delta and later married and settled in Ladner where they raised their two children. Left to mourn and remember the good times and the baking she was famous for, is her son, Ken (Marilynn), daughter, Louise, grandchildren, Lisa, Rhonda, Ryan (Jennifer), Jason (Sydney), great-grandchildren, Karleigh, Austin, Ryan, Mason, Owen, Jack and Mackenzie and one sister, Francis Moore. There will be no Service by request. The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to Westshore Laylum for their outstanding care, compassion and understanding. As well we wish to thank the hospice volunteers who unselfishly gave their time to be with Mom when we couldn’t. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Westshore Laylum, Delta Hospice Society or the charity of your choice. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
