Chief Neil Dubord upholds pledges he made when he was sworn in a year ago DAVE WILLIS

Neil Dubord has had a year to work on the pledges he made when he was sworn in as Delta’s police chief. “We’re well on the way,” Dubord says when asked this week how he feels he’s done with the three promises he made to the community a year ago. During his swearing in ceremony on the plaza at municipal hall, he pledged to continue the tradition of community-based policing, to maintain the department’s commitment to the “no call too small” policy and to be an advocate for Delta. He says some really strong relationships have been built through community-based policing. There are many people in the community that care greatly about it and want to contribute to the safety, security, wellbeing and quality of life, he says, adding he’s spent a great deal of time getting to know the various groups operating locally. One of the largest drug busts in Delta police history originated from a “no call too small,” he says, referencing the recent case that ended up in the discovery of a large lab in Burnaby and seizure

advocate for Delta. As for other initiatives, the chief says he wants to put a focus on customer service and he always talks about wanting people who deal with the department to be able to say, ‘Wow, that’s amazing service.’ He says there’s an operational review underway that’s looking at using technology to become more efficient, HR processes and workload analysis. The preliminary report is expected to come out next month with implementation starting in

early fall. With the police department budget having increased over 80 per cent in the last dozen years, Dubord was asked if he feels taxpayers are getting their money’s worth. He says there’s no doubt the cost of policing has increased but adds a lot of the additional expenses are typically items that have either been downloaded or have become the responsibility of policing that hadn’t been the case before. after three years as chief of the Metro Vancouver Transit Police. Prior to that he spent 25 years with the Edmonton Police Department. He replaced Jim Cessford, who retired early last year after 20 years at the helm. Mayor Lois Jackson, who chairs the Delta police board, says Dubord has done a great job. “He has left no stone unturned. I can’t say there’s one thing I’ve been disappointed in. I’m so glad we chose him.”

at the time of the incident and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, admitted to the attack that left one teen dead and another critically injured. The B.C. Supreme Court ruled in April he could not be held criminally responsible due to a mental disorder. The case was then referred to the B.C. Review

Board, which has the authority to make decisions and orders concerning people who have been found to be not criminally responsible for acts committed while they were suffering from a mental disorder, or whose mental disorder makes them unfit to stand trial. The hearing was held recently by a panel of the B.C. Review Board with

three possible outcomes — an absolute discharge, a discharge with conditions or custody where the accused is detained in hospital. Police were called to a residence on Tsawwassen Drive at around 10 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2013. Upon arrival, officers discovered two teenaged girls suffering from stab wounds lying on the ground.

Both were treated at the scene before being airlifted to hospital. The 16-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries while the 15-year-old survived. The suspect was taken into custody the next day. The accused and the victims were known to each other. — With files from Jessica Kerr

Metro mayors voice bridge concerns Report released this week pans new crossing, suggests money better spent on other projects SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It should come as no surprise that Metro Vancouver mayors have joined to collectively voice formal opposition to the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, but the province is sticking to its guns. The regional district board this week released a report outlining a plethora of concerns how the $3.5-billion bridge could impact traffic congestion and the environment. “History has demonstrated the world over, you can’t reduce congestion by simply building more roads,” said board chair Greg Moore. “This project represents an expansion of car-oriented infrastructure and diverts crucial funds from transportation projects that support the regional growth strategy.” Among the board’s list of concerns are a lack of integration into the regional growth strategy and transportation network, insufficient consideration of alternatives to a 10-lane bridge, lack of consultation, ecological disruption to the Fraser River estuary, costly impacts on Metro Vancouver’s infrastruc-

While releasing a report on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project this week, Metro Vancouver board chair Greg Moore said the bridge represents an expansion of car-oriented infrastructure and diverts crucial funds from other transportation projects. ture and impacts on Deas Island Regional Park. Metro mayors have long stated their displeasure since Premier Christy Clark announced plans to replace the aging George Massey Tunnel with a bridge. The regional district has gone so far as to ask for a federal review, a move that also hasn’t dissuaded the province.

At a news conference Wednesday, Moore said he wants the province to conduct further consultation before going ahead with the project. In a lengthy response, Transportation Minister Todd Stone defended the project on a number of fronts as well as the government’s consultation, which he pointed out has

included extensive talks with Metro Vancouver. He also noted the tunnel has about 10 years left before the major components, like lighting, ventilation and pumping systems, will need to be replaced. While some seismic upgrades were done in 2008, Stone said engineers advised there was a risk the tunnel could be

damaged and made unusable if there weren’t additional seismic upgrades. “Metro Vancouver incorrectly suggests that by building this vitally important new bridge, we are ignoring transit improvements in the region. We have been very clear on this point: we are investing in both road infrastructure and transit upgrades.

“We’ve invested billions into expanding TransLink services. We’ve built the Canada Line. We’ve nearly finished the Evergreen Line extension. And just last week, Premier Christy Clark, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mayor Gregor Robertson announced a commitment to invest nearly $800 million in provincial and federal transit funding to move forward with major transit priorities in the region and throughout the province,” Stone added. Victoria also announced this week it’s issued a request for qualifications for parties interested in delivering the project. As far as lining up federal funding to help pay for it, which Ottawa still hasn’t hinted may be on the way, Victoria issued a statement to the Optimist that said, “We continue to work with the federal government and Port Metro Vancouver on the potential for cost sharing for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. Outside of any federal government or private partner contribution, the project will be funded and repaid by TI Corp, and will be paid for through user tolls.”

Bridge could bring overhead power lines to Deas Island SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It looks like Deas Island Regional Park will be home to an overhead B.C. Hydro transmission line. That’s the option the Crown corporation is leaning toward as it looks to relocate an existing 230 kilovolt line from the George Massey Tunnel, which is scheduled to be decommissioned after it’s replaced by a bridge in 2022. Part of the existing line is buried inside the tunnel itself, while some sections of the existing overhead transmission line run adjacent to Highway 99 on either side of the tunnel.

The 120-hectare (300acre) regional park is popular with rowers, bird watchers and for family gatherings, but a high voltage power line running overhead could change that experience. B.C. Hydro’s preferred option would see the construction of transmission towers on the island with an overhead transmission line crossing the Fraser River, which would be aligned beside the new bridge An alternative to that would be an underground transmission line running under the Fraser River, while another alternative would be a transmission line located on the bridge

itself. A discussion guide notes the first choice “appears to be a technically leading alternative for a number of reasons, including a high level of safety and reliability of service.” B.C. Hydro notes the plan would require two steel lat-

tice towers, approximately 120 metres in height (approximately half the height of the new bridge), to support the overhead line crossing the river. One transmission tower would be located on Deas Island and the other in Richmond, to the west of the bridge. A second, smaller steel lattice tower, approximately 75 metres in height, would also be required on Deas Island. B.C. Hydro says it would place the towers in line with the proposed bridge towers, and the conductor lines would hang at approximately the same height as the bridge deck, to mitigate visual and potential avian impacts.

Having gathered public feedback, B.C. Hydro adds it’s anticipated the overhead line could be completed before the anticipated start of bridge construction in 2017. Also according to B.C. Hydro, the primary potential impacts would be ground disturbance at the site of the transmission towers and potential impacts on birds. A study was launched to help further assess any potential impacts on birds. Officials with Metro Vancouver expressed concerns about potential impacts on the island not long after the bridge plan was announced by Premier Christy Clark.

Ladner’s Robin Richardson received a major honour at her UBC convocation ceremony last month. She was presented with the Governor General’s Silver Medal in Arts. The medal, created in 1873, is described as the “most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive,” and is presented to the student graduating with the highest average. Richardson, who studied psychology, said “it was pretty cool” to get the medal. She got the news in stages, waking up to an email and then being surprised with the presentation from the president of UBC at her convocation. She said the program prepares students to go in a number of different directions. She said she’s leaning heavily towards clinical practice. “I’m really interested in people and understanding why people do what

they do,” she said. “I think that psychology is a really interesting way to be able to study that, because we do it scientifically.” Richardson said her Grade 12 psychology teacher Kathie Morrison was the one who really inspired her to pursue it long-term. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without her,” she said.

Teaching privileges permanently revoked after Wait admits to viewing teen porn SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a i t @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A former Delta Secondary teacher has been permanently stripped of his teaching privileges after admitting to viewing teen porn at school. Robin James Wait, who was fired from the Delta school district in December 2013, admitted to the allegation and agreed never to try to teach again, according to a consent resolution agreement released this week by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation. He entered the agreement last December. The English teacher

was accused of using a district-issued computer between 2006 and 2011 to write, store and access several pornographic stories, including one involving a male teacher having sex in the classroom with a female student and another of a man having sex with a teenage girl in a female change room. He also stored a couple of images of a teenage girl, one of the girl partially dressed and the other naked, as well as 19 other porn images in a subfolder titled “student teaching.” Wait also accessed porn images and videos on the Internet, engaged in online chat of a sexually explicit nature and accessed social

media websites primarily targeted to and used by teenage girls. Computer records showed the materials were often accessed during school hours when he should have been teaching. In a separate incident, in November 2013, he touched the buttocks of a female minor in a public place. He pleaded guilty in provincial court, receiving a 12-month conditional discharge. It’s not the first time Wait was in trouble with the law. In November 2011, officers were called to DSS after a student alleged a teacher had sexually

assaulted her. Wait was identified by the girl and a friend through photos in a school yearbook. Wait was arrested at his home in the presence of his wife and two young children. A few days later, a second student made similar allegations and Wait was then charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual interference. After the arrest and charges, Wait was suspended without pay by the district. In the summer of 2012, Crown counsel elected to stay the charges. In early 2013, Wait launched a lawsuit against several police officers and the Corporation of Delta.

bout a month ago after Delta was asked if it would be interested in hosting a casino, we began musing, as we’re apt to do in the newsroom, where such a facility could be located. It appeared civic leaders were finally warming to the idea, likely because their colleagues throughout the Lower Mainland had hit the proverbial jackpot with gaming revenue. Whatever the reason, the chilly reception that had greeted previous gambling overtures in these parts was nowhere to be found this time around, leaving one big question: Where would you put a casino? To be clear, a whole lot has to happen between Delta expressing non-binding interest in hosting a gaming facility and one actually opening for business here, but presuming this process has some legs, the potential location would be a crucial component of any proposal. Given Delta is the second largest municipality in Greater Vancouver in terms of size, you’d think there would be plenty of possible sites, but that’s not really the case. It doesn’t make sense in any of the commercial cores and although you see them in industrialtype locations elsewhere in the region, I don’t think that works here. Farmland would be an absolute non-starter. There was, however, one spot that seemingly checked all the boxes. It’s removed from residences to nullify any concerns about neighbourhood intrusion, it’s got great highway access, and with tourism zoning for its hotel and banquet facilities, it’s already part way to an entertainment complex. Apparently we weren’t the only ones thinking the Delta Town & Country Inn could fit the bill as a civic report this week identified it as the only suitable site in Delta for a casino, which municipal hall would like to see as a component of a larger entertainment centre. It will be up to the B.C. Lottery Corporation, and then the public, to decide whether it’s the right facility at the right location, a process that could well be complicated by competing expressions of interest from the City of Surrey and the Tsawwassen First Nation. As much as the T&C site makes sense, a casino-hotel attached to a major shopping centre could prove to be an even more enticing proposition. The TFN hasn’t put forward such a proposal. Yet.

Grads face challenges class of 1956 could only dream about

amilies and friends gathered at ChandosPattison Auditorium in Surrey recently to recognize the graduating class of 2016 from Elgin Park Secondary. Two hundred and ninety-six young adults full of energy sat dutifully on stage in front of a packed house of admirers. Maureen and I were amongst the legions present as our granddaughter Morgan, a poised and beautiful young woman, walked across the stage in the requisite cap and gown, her image emblazoned on media boards. It was a never to be forgotten moment, full of emotion, as she took the ceremonial step into adulthood. The evening was replete with customary and complimentary speeches, culminating with the class valedictorian’s message. There was a glimpse of the untapped energy on stage when the graduates roared their approval at the end of the formalities, tossing 296 caps high and symbolically into the future. Restless energy was soon evident as families and graduates gathered round and congratulated their charges on their first steps into adult life. Similar graduation events occur throughout the province in June of each year. As much as parents and graduates plan their future, the decades ahead will unfold with unpredictable results.

Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND

Their future will soon become reality with its successes and accomplishments, disappointments and failures. Life is full of choices, all subject to risk. As of this moment, they can dare to be great and accepting of all challenges placed in their path. Our generation sees a very complex world ahead as these young adults move into their life’s journey. Paradoxically as that generation concentrates on its future, we spend more time acknowledging our past. Incidentally, there is a 60-year age difference between Morgan and me. I graduated from Delta High in 1956, and as this column goes to print, the class of ‘56 will have held its 60th reunion at our home. On June 15, 1956, 15 young men and 21 young women graduated from Delta’s only high school located in Ladner. Facing similar youthful chal-

lenges in a less sophisticated world, graduates and families gathered at Ladner’s community hall, long lost to fire on the corner of Elliott and Chisholm streets. From a small student body of 300, including grades 7 to 12, there have been many individual successes starting with farming and fishing careers and branching into skilled trades, business, engineering, education, journalism, nursing and political life. Delta was subject to very little change in those days and most of the members of our graduation class were classmates from elementary school, located on the same grounds, and have retained a special camaraderie. Delta High, long since demolished and replaced with a new and larger version, was helpful with its art class designing a welcoming banner for our reunion under the guidance of Mr. Boldt and student Mackenzie Boates. It’s another attribute of living in a smaller community and connecting in a meaningful way with institutions six decades apart. The class of ‘56 looks back with fondness and good cheer while the class of 2016 moves forward, members spreading their wings and casting their influence over communities and beyond. And a good night to you, Morgan. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Houses on the hill impacted too Editor: Re: Delta has its say on Point Roberts quarry plan, June 22 We read with great dismay about the proposed operation to bring gravel from a Point Roberts gravel pit to the Southlands development. There seems to be concern, from Delta CAO George Harvie, about the

gravel pit being “approximately 150 metres from the nearest Delta residence.” What about the many of us who live on the hill? Do we not count? Do you figure we have so much noise now from the motorcycles and trucks gunning up the hill, exhaust and noise from the U.S. gas seekers sitting with their cars and radios

running endlessly that we don’t matter? How about a little consideration for us, too? Most of the construction trucks (which, by the way, usually have “pups” attached) that are now using the hill use their engine brakes even though they pass the signs advising them not to. How will 90 to 120 days’

worth of that noise, along with the dust and the endless backups on the hill for the border crossing, impact us? We’re Delta residents, too. How about some “due diligence to protect” us, too? It’s a lousy idea as far as this household is concerned. Renee Davis

Mayor urged to change course on casino Editor: Re: Delta ready to take next casino step, June 29 I am absolutely opposed to Delta council’s decision to support a casino or any gambling facility in South Delta. The negative social and moral impacts of a casino

on the community of South Delta far outweigh the couple of million dollars in dirty revenue council would receive. Mayor Lois Jackson, is this going to be your lasting legacy, bringing a casino to South Delta? Will you be known for creating

Potterville? After so many terms serving our community to build up the value and living standards, you will destroy decades of public service and reputation in one council vote. No city worldwide has ever benefited from gam-

bling. The optics are not good. Take charge and correct the course to ban casinos and other gambling facilities. You will have not only my support but the majority of residents of South Delta. Boris Lum

Dry Grad not possible without much support Editor: On June 3, the graduating class of DSS 2016 celebrated the end of their final year in high school with a formal dinner/dance at the Westin Bayshore, followed by Dry Grad at the Ladner Community Centre. Dry Grad was a success with

Frustration expressed at never-ending road project

Editor: When is the project at 52nd Street and Highway 17 going to be complete? The risk and frustration that every driver experiences moving through this construction site is unacceptable. over 200 students attending to enjoy a safe, drug/ alcohol free party to continue celebrating their graduation. The 2016 Dry Grad Committee could not have hosted an event like this without the generosity of the South Delta community. Seventy-six businesses,

individuals and families donated everything from cash to food to merchandise and services. The support of those who work and live in South Delta was incredible, and all of us are so fortunate to live in such an amazing community. Again, we would like to

Expand tunnel for less and use left over money to fix Ladner’s terrible roads Editor: Re: Bridge to nowhere a bad idea, letter to the editor, June 22 I absolutely agree with J. John West. It will be a bridge to nowhere when you consider where the traffic will go after getting off such a bridge. The problem lies with the so-called decision makers. They largely do not live here in Delta and they do not even commute to and from Delta or from south of the George

Massey Tunnel. They do not seem to employ engineers with traffic movement knowledge. It is going to be a ridiculous amount of money to build this bridge when the tunnel could be adequately expanded for far less. Some money could then be spent on fixing the terrible condition of most of Ladner and surrounding area roads. Someone in authority please speak up. D. Coghill

KinVillage thanks Teams leave diamond in the rough many sponsors parents and coaches, etc. Editor: Editor: We wish to thank the local retailers who so generously donated items for door prizes at the annual bridge tournament held on June 10 at KinVillage Community Centre. All the recipients were very happy with their gifts. Tournament Committee KinVillage Community Centre

Last Saturday at approximately 8:30 p.m. I had occasion to take my dog out to Hawthorne Park for her constitutional. Whilst I was there I met a Delta employee who was still working. When I asked why he was there so late, he informed me he was cleaning up the mess left by the baseball players; or more correctly, their

After looking around, I could see what he meant. I cannot believe that after the municipality built these diamonds, the very people that get the most use out of them would treat them like a garbage dump. To say I was appalled would be putting it mildly. Is this what you want to teach your kids? David Smith

Let public provide input on flood control efforts

Editor: Re: Seal level rise comes with a huge tab, June 22 Regarding the ongoing discussions about the upgrading of Delta’s existing dike and flood control systems, and before the process goes further, public opinion needs to be part of the discussions. The public, including professionals and others who have the experience and expertise in the design and construction of these systems, would be invaluable moving forward. Delta’s existing dike and flood control structures are a result of well-engineered designs

to achieve the current 200-year protection. We need to ask the detailed questions now when it comes to very expensive applications such as how we raise our dikes and how effective some of the proposals for seismic retrofitting of soils are, as recommended in the recent reports. Let the public in now before the projects are designed and budgeted for, otherwise we end up in a similar dilemma as we see ourselves now with the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. Margaret’s Rescued Duckling

Re: Group effort gets Margaret (Margaret the Mallard) and her ducklings safely to water. Pat Rogers June 17 Delighted to inform you that I have received an update call from the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC stating the rescued duckling is recovering very well. On June 7th at the time of discovery, along with its 9 other hatchlings, this particular duckling was having problems lifting its head, and keeping up with the others, much to the distress of its mother Margaret the Mallard. Once waterborne it was obvious that this little one would drown before too long. Scooped up gently by Janice Lawlor, and immediately driven to our Delta Community Animal Shelter, a holding area for the Wildlife Rescue Association, we have since been waiting anxiously to receive this update call. It is reported that this duckling is male. He has had some medication along with therapy to strengthen his neck muscles. To date, he is kept within a supervised private area that allows him to walk freely and enjoy some swimming activity that enables him to practice keeping his head up while navigating his way around. He is gaining weight and on July 17th he will be placed in a larger area to begin the process of socializing amongst others his age. When e matures to the handsome drake that we know he will become, he will be released from the Wildlife Rescue compound. In placing closure to having had a very special guest bless us with her presence, and that of her 10 ducklings, the success of this story is largely due to the experience and compassion from the following agencies and individuals to whom I am truly grateful. Susan Norris & Dan Dixon (biologist), Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Wildlife Rescue Association of BC, Delta Community Animal Shelter, Joanne Wallden and Mike Brotherston - Corporation of Delta, Brittney – Canadian Wildlife Rescue, David Strutt – Dave’s Pop Culture, Janice Lawlor-Cooper, Stephen Leeming and Niels Johansen from Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe, Racquel Wiesner – Fur the Love of Dogs, Alex – Guardian Angel with the key to the Seafarer’s Marina and one young family out for a walk that volunteered their help also. Addendum: Please consider a financial donation to our animal shelters. A gesture in recognition and appreciation for the kindness and dedication of people towards God’s beautiful animals that are in distress or abandoned. Thank you sincerely. Carol R. LeVasseur

The sad reality is this can all too easily block out our time, energy and attentiveness to the sounds, activity and engagement inherent with Joy and laughter, cooperation across cultures, welcome/hospitality of friends and strangers, and blessings through wide ranging relationships. Set to run from July 5 to 9, the festival was founded by Delta Music School instructors Stephen Robb and Jared Burrows and initiated by the Delta Music School Society. The idea behind the festival was to create a workshop whereby students of all ages and abilities could learn about jazz improvisation from some of the best in the business — all during an intensive, one-week program. Other professional musicians were invited to join in the instruction and play alongside the participants. Over the years the festival has grown in popularity and stature and is now considered a major community event. “It’s going to be a great event again,” said Robb. “Over the years we have been able to do different things with it — offer different instructors and in turn, offer different musical experiences for not only the participants, but also the community in terms of the concerts.” Robb said at some point he would like to expand on what they do as a festival component. “The outdoor event on Saturday with the students is going to be great, but at some point I would love to expand the mid-week outdoor concerts on our side lawn next to the (Delta) Music School,” he said. Ron Samworth on guitar and Jennifer Scott on voice and piano are two new instructors this year. Scott is no stranger to the event, however, as last year she was on hand for one day of instruction and a performance. “Her session last year turned out very well, so we are hoping that having her here for the full week will allow our students an even greater experience,” Robb said. “This is the first year that we will have a full-time voice faculty, so we have more voice students who have

Sidekick auditioning for first production of its 20th season

The Sidekick Players will be auditioning for Mending Fences by Norm Foster, the first play of its 20th season, next week. Auditions will be held at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on Tuesday, July 5 and Wednesday, July 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. both evenings. Harry Sullivan hasn’t seen his son Drew in 13 years. And now Drew is coming to Harry’s Saskatchewan ranch for a visit. This poignant comedy tells the story of two men who are too stubborn to give in to feelings of the heart. Mending Fences portrays human drama that is relevant to anyone who has ever been a parent, a son or a daughter, which includes us all. It tells a story that spans two generations but takes place over a few days. It is a powerful play that uses hockey as the symbol of a power play between father and

son. Foster’s magic is in his ability to weave pathos with humour without ever confusing the audience about whether it’s time to laugh or cry. Directed for Sidekick by Todd-Elliot Gates, Mending Fences requires a cast of two males (one 50ish and one in his late 20s) and one female (50ish). Auditions are first come basis and there will be no appointments. No monologues required as audition will be a cold read from the script. Scripts are available at the Vancouver Library. Production dates are Oct. 6 to 22. Sidekick Players is a community-based theatre company and all roles are volunteer. Membership ($10) must be paid at first rehearsal. Send a head shot and resume to sidekickplayers@outlook.com.

Six dancers from the O’Brien School of Irish Dance in Ladner are getting set to put their best feet forward at the North America Irish Dance Championships in Orlando, Fla. Among the talented group is Ladner’s own 11-year-old Mackenzie Brodie, who has been dancing for almost eight years. “It’s her first time going to the competition so she is very excited,” said O’Brien School of Dance director Carolyn Robinson. The other five dancers hail from Victoria and Duncan as the school teaches out of six locations, including Ladner, Victoria, Cadboro Bay, Esquimalt, Duncan and North Vancouver. The O’Brien School of Irish Dance is Ladner’s only Irish dance school. Robinson said it’s a huge accomplishment for these dancers to take

Robinson has competed at the event more than 11 times. “You have to qualify to go. It’s a big deal because there are dancers from all over the world,” she said. “You have to be in the top two levels in order to even

get a chance to qualify and it usually takes a good 10 years to achieve those top two levels.” Robinson said Mackenzie has been training extremely hard, a schedule that includes dance practice six days a week, cardio training,

strength training, technique training and performance training. “Although many people view Irish dancing as an art form, the hard work and dedication that goes into training for a major competition such as the North American Championships, is like training for the Olympics,” said Robinson. “What Mackenzie and the other five girls from the school have accomplished is something that only a very small percentage of Irish dancers will ever get to do.” Once in Orlando, Mackenzie will compete in two separate rounds in front of 10 judges. She will dance one hard shoe dance (the loud dance with the fast rhythms) and one soft shoe dance. She hopes to place high enough to dance again for a medal placement. Readers can follow the results of the competitors as they become available at: http://idtana-southernregion.com/naidc16/.

A pesticide use permit has been issued for the purpose of eradicating invasive intertidal cordgrasses (Spartina spp.) which are designated as Provincial Noxious Weeds under B.C.’s Weed Control Act. Treatment areas will be restricted to infestations of Spartina on cobble beaches, salt marshes and intertidal mudflats (at low tide) located in Boundary Bay, Robert’s Bank and Burrard Inlet, but treatment may expand over the course of the permit period to include sites at Sturgeon Banks and on the central east coast of Vancouver Island, including Comox, Courtenay and Deep Bay. Pesticide applications will consist of the herbicide called Habitat (active ingredient: imazapyr) PCP #30841 plus the surfactant Ag-Surf II (active ingredient: alcohol ethoxylate) PCP #30266, which will be applied to selected sites using handheld spray bottles, backpack sprayers or mounted sprayers. Promoting community and the importance of shopping locally, as well as offering networking opportunities, are the ideas behind the popular Ladies of the Links at Beach Grove Golf Club. Started last year by Tsawwassen’s Debbie Wright with 40 to 50 women taking part in six events, Ladies of the Links has grown this year to 88 participants. “I have done quite a few events over the years and they have always had a focus of promoting women in business and networking within our community. Just empowering women really,” said Wright. “Last year I approached Beach Grove and asked them if there was a way to allow a group of nonmember female members to come in once a month and play nine holes followed by dinner. Grade 6 Holly Elementary students Taylor Deane and Laurin Henry proudly presented the Delta Hospital Foundation with a cheque last week for cancer care at Delta Hospital. They raised $800 by holding a Toonie Drive at their school in memory of their grandfathers, Clifford Cox and Donald McLaurin, both of whom recently passed away from cancer and had received great care at Delta Hospital. The girls had a planning discussion with their principal who helped them through the process. “While I offered support and encouragement, this was initiated completely by the girls and they should be honoured and acknowledged for their efforts,” says principal Vikki Chapman. To advertise their Toonie Drive, with help of friend Marley, the girls handmade many posters. They also made daily

Dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal are closer to becoming a reality for a pair of South Delta rowers. Ladner’s Maxwell Lattimer and Tsawwassen’s Brendan Hodge were among 26 athletes selected Tuesday by the Canadian Olympic Committee and Rowing Canada Aviron to represent Team Canada at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Hodge and Lattimer will make up the lightweight men’s four crew along with Ontario’s Nicolas Pratt and Eric Woelfl. They will compete at Lagoa Stadium, Aug. 6 to 14, where eight men’s events and six women’s events will be staged. The rowers won gold at the Pan Am Games in Toronto last year. They were also in Canada’s lightweight fours boat in 2014, finishing eighth and 10th at World Cup events in Switzerland and France, respectively. They were also 13th at the 2014 World Championships.

The team will fly out on Aug. 1 and will have five days to get

This is the most exciting point of the year. Our potential is limitless if we utilize the next 40 days as best as we can.” Lattimer said to get to this point in their careers is a dream come true. “We were talking just among the four of us the other day about our own progressions to this point,” he recalled. “First I competed for Delta in the B.C. Games, then it was competing for Team B.C. at the Canada Games. Then you make your first Team Canada and go to Pan Am Games and now to race for Canada at the Olympics — it is a dream come true. You are at the highest level of sport representing the best country in the world. What could be better than wearing the red and white maple leaf?”

Double shot of Blues in the Okanagan Tsawwassen sending two teams to Provincial ‘B’ Cup Championships next week in Penticton

Two Tsawwassen girls rep soccer teams are set to resume their outstanding seasons in the Okanagan heat. The U18 and U17 Blues head to Penticton July 7 to 10 for the Provincial “B” Cup Championships. The tournament brings together eight teams from across the province to determine B.C. bragging rights. The U18 Blues are no stranger to provincials — making their fifth straight appearance at the championships dating back to U14. They won bronze three years ago and came ever so close to reaching the top of the podium last season, falling to Surrey’s Central City Breakers in the final. This time, Tsawwassen is considered the team to beat after repeating as Coastal Cup champions with a dominating 3-0 victory over the Richmond Ravens back in May. They also were earlier crowned B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League Cup champs for

the top flight. The Blues are in a round-robin group with host Pinnacles FC, Surrey FC Tigers and Richmond. The other pool includes Nelson, Kelowna, Saanich Fusion and Terrace. Meanwhile, the Provincial Cup is a whole new experience for the U17 Blues following the team’s breakthrough season. Tsawwassen captured the Coastal Cup for the first time with a dramatic 3-2 win in penalty kicks. The girls already knew they were headed to the Okanagan before kickoff with the two cup finalists assured berths. The Blues will get a steady diet of Coastal competition in round-robin play with games against Sur-Del Selects and a rematch with Vancouver. The group also includes Prince George. The other side of the draw features Columbia Valley, Burnaby, Penticton and Williams Lake.

Marion was well known in the community for her honesty, humour, wonderful sense of style and easy going personality. Marion especially loved spending time with her family, which was always her top priority. She loved travel, concerts, movies and exercising with friends. She loved good food and was a talented cook. Marion had a quiet confidence, a humble calming presence and a consistent gratefulness that created a special and deep connection with so many of her dear friends and family members. Never taking herself too seriously, Marion was up for any new adventure. Marion also had a private side, where she enjoyed reading, writing, listening to music and making progress on her spiritual journey with the Lord.
