Another fatal crash on Trunk 17-year-old from Langley killed DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The same stretch of Ladner Trunk Road in East Delta has seen its second fatal crash in the last three months. A 17-year-old male from Langley was killed on impact Wednesday morning in a collision between a car and a dump truck, said Delta police A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow. The crash occurred in the 9800-block of Ladner Trunk Road. The driver of the Pontiac Sunfire, a 23-year-old female from Langley, suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries while the dump truck driver suffered minor injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Swallow said yesterday. Police are asking witnesses to call 604-946-4411 and ask to speak with Const. Grayson Smith. It appears the dump truck and vehicle were travelling in opposite directions. The vehicle ended up trapped underneath the dump truck in the ditch.

A dump truck is extricated from a ditch along Ladner Trunk Road Wednesday afternoon following a crash that killed a Langley teen. Ladner Trunk Road was closed between 104th Street and Highway 99 into the evening. A single-vehicle crash, which claimed the lives of two people, occurred in early April

along the same stretch of road. A Richmond man died at the scene while a woman, also from Richmond, was airlifted to hospital but eventually succumbed to her injuries.

“These two crashes occurred in the same general area, yes, but there’s not really anything else common between the two of them,” said Swallow. It doesn’t appear that speed

was a factor in either of the incidents, she said. There are ditches on both sides of the road there and there’s no room for driver error, she added.

Restoration efforts next With Burns Bog fire now contained, municipal officials turn to recovery mode SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The focus will shift to restoration once the massive wildfire in Burns Bog is extinguished. Delta enthusiastically announced Wednesday that the fire, which broke out Sunday and had grown to almost 80 hectares, was fully contained. More than 80 firefighters from Delta and across Metro Vancouver, as well as several water bombers, were mobilized when the fire broke out. At one point the blaze jumped Highway 17 and threatened the Tilbury Industrial Park. Bog fires have the potential to burn underground, but officials believed it may not have penetrated the peat line, saying, “The water mound is higher and the bog is in much better shape than during previous fires.” The evacuation of the industrial park was lifted as well as the closure of Highway 17. However, officials predicted it would still take another week to ensure the fire, which is under investigation, is completely extinguished. Now that that local state of emergency is over, next

A fire that burned 8o hectares of Burns Bog is contained but it could take another week to fully extinguish it. up Delta will arrange an on-site visit with members of Metro Vancouver’s Scientific Advisory Panel. “It is essential that experts and science guide us in recovery of Burns Bog. The Corporation of Delta is committed to continuing our role in the long-term preservation and health of this natural wonder,” a municipal statement read. The advisory panel meets regularly to provide advice to the bog’s managing partners on issues

relating to hydrology and bog ecology. When a management agreement was signed following the public purchase of a large portion of Burns Bog, Delta took on responsibility for drainage management. During the past few years, significant work has been done by Delta to dam internal ditches in an effort to increase water levels. In conjunction with the ditch blocking efforts, an extensive water level monitoring program has

been in place. Monitoring has shown water levels increasing in the areas where dams have been constructed, and stable water levels in the remainder of the raised bog. However, the loss of bog habitat due to fire is a significant issue for the advisory panel. A Delta civic report six years ago noted the last major bog fire in 2005 damaged a sizeable area of habitat. The idea of installing fire breaks in strategic areas of Burns Bog has

been raised by the panel in the past. It would involve the removal of trees, which the report noted could result in public concern. Also since that 2005 fire, Delta has been proactive in taking preventative measures to reduce the risk of fire, including banning public access, banning almost all vehicles during higher risk fire season as well as regular patrols. A fire management plan was also developed by the Delta Fire Department.

Owners want new site for heritage home IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A Ladner heritage home will soon be on the move, but its owners aren’t convinced it’s going to the right location. The Gillespie House at 4964-47A Ave. will be re-located sometime this month to a farm on 34th Street that is also owned by the property owner. The re-location is expected to pave the way for a proposed housing development. The Gillespie House was constructed in 1901 for R.H. Gillespie, an employee of Marshall Smith’s store. The house is on Delta’s Heritage Inventory, but not on the Delta Heritage Registry, which provides greater protection. John and Anne Flaming

own the property and are prepared to move the home, but feel it should be placed somewhere the public can enjoy and appreciate it. “I have no problem with heritage stuff and to save it. What we have a problem with is they [Delta council] want us to move it to our farm, and use it as a storage shed, which is not feasible,” said John Flaming. “I don’t think that is a good use of our heritage properties or houses. If Delta wants these houses saved, they should be taking them to a spot where people can see and enjoy the heritage. They have lots of land available. Why not create a heritage park similar to what Burnaby has or other municipalities have? A house is not a storage shed — a house is

The owners of the Gillespie House say moving it to their farm to use as a storage shed doesn’t benefit the public. something to live in.” Delta council has been struggling with the issue of preserving heritage homes for years. In 2012, the Corporation of Delta hired a consultant to develop a heritage strategy. A draft, which sets out a plan to establish a framework for herit-

age preservation, was completed in early 2014 and the full plan should be back before council later in the fall, according to Coun. Sylvia Bishop, who is familiar with the Gillespie House and the Flamings’ development application. “Originally council

wanted the house kept on the site and made part of the development,” said Bishop. “But that is not what the property owner wants, and I respect the fact the developer has a process for the land and he wants to develop it, but what can we do?” Bishop said while she can see the desire to preserve the home in its natural condition, council is simply not in the position to transport and relocate houses. “This is a constant challenge for us,” she said. “We don’t have the land to take them to and try and preserve them. I would say that the heritage strategy, when it is finally adopted, envisions having some tools to provide incentives to developers so that they can maintain a house in its location.”

TSAWWASSEN

• July 1, 3:14 a.m., 5100block of 11A Avenue: Complainant reported a young white male had entered her attached garage through an open front door. When confronted by the complainant, the suspect left, taking a full box of soft drinks. Police arrived and found the suspect, who was intoxicated,

had returned. He was read his rights and arrested for theft. The suspect was then transported to his residence and released to his mother with a promise to attend court at a future date. • July 3, 7:15 a.m., 1700-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported her vehicle parked in the secured underground parking lot had been broken into by smashing the passenger side window. Keys to the complainant’s vehicle, home and office were stolen. Video surveillance revealed two suspects breaking the door in order to enter the underground parking lot. Incident still under investigation. • July 2, 11:18 p.m., Point Roberts border: Police called to assist with a male being held whose breath samples had read “Fail.” The suspect admitted to drinking four glasses of wine two hours previous while watching the fireworks in Point Roberts. Police attended

and the suspect was given a 24-hour roadside suspension. The suspect was driven home by his wife.

LADNER

• June 27, 2:36 p.m., 4700-block of Cannery Crescent: Complainant reported she had received a call from Canada Revenue Agency and had given her SIN number before she realized the call was fraudulent. Police provided the complainant with the phone numbers for Equifax and Transunion. Both these companies will keep subscribers informed of potential identity fraud. No money or other personal information provided to the suspects. • June 27, 6:01 a.m., 5000-block of River Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his work van was broken into by punching the rear lock. Approximately $2,500 worth of work tools were stolen. All tools engraved with the letters “DMH.” • June 29, 8:42 p.m.,

4800-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported he had entered his credit card information to a website for a charge of $3.99. When the complainant went to pay his credit card bill, he discovered several charges to other websites for items he had not purchased. He immediately contacted the bank to report the fraud and cancel his credit card. • June 30, 7:40 a.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Complainant reported he left his vehicle and two trailers locked in his driveway and when he returned he found they had been entered. The driver’s side window in the truck had been smashed and the locks on both trailers cut and snapped off. A large number of expensive tools were stolen. Forensic identification officers processed the scene. • June 30, 9:05 p.m., 7500-block of Hoskins Street: Complainant observed two males looking into the windows of his business and then crawl

under the fence to the adjoining business. They stole several flats of soda pop by sliding them under the fence and placing them into a white pickup truck. The complainant provided police with the license plate number of the vehicle and several cell phone photos he had taken of the suspects while carrying out the offence. Police attended but suspects were gone on arrival. The incident is still under police investigation. • July 2, 6:52 p.m., 55B Street and Ladner Trunk Road: A complainant left an anonymous call with 911 reporting a Canada Post mailbox had been tipped over. Police attended and finding the mailbox had not received any damage, put it back in its upright position. • July 2, 1:58 p.m., 6200-block of River Road: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone had broken into the underground parking lot. A Ladner family whose charitable efforts since the birth of their triplet daughters have helped purchase life-saving equipment for premature babies at Royal Columbian Hospital is determined to reach its latest goal after a successful fundraiser. consistently having among the best survival rates in Canada, despite the challenge of caring for babies born as early as 23 weeks into pregnancy and weighing as little as 500 grams or less. The NICU is one of four Level 3 centres in the province designated to care for the sickest and most fragile premature babies from throughout B.C. Since 2012, the Van Marrewyk family has helped raise more than $220,000 for the NICU. In previous years, their efforts have led to the purchase of incubators, infusion pumps and a jet ventilator. The family’s daughters, Andy, Paige and Shauna, were born prematurely at 29 weeks in 2010, weighing between two and three pounds each. The girls came under the care of Royal Columbian’s NICU for several weeks.

hese guys, and gals, are legit. The 200 or so riders that will roll into town this weekend to compete in the Tour de Delta aren’t household names, but don’t let their anonymity fool you. The cyclists that will do battle on our streets over the next three days are indeed world class athletes. I recognize that you have to be a hardcore cycling fan for names like Lyne Bessette or Zach Bell to register, but be assured that every year there are several riders in that brightly-coloured sea of spandex that zips by at 60km/h that are among the best in the world. Bessette and Bell, who have starred at previous editions of the Tour de Delta, are both two-time Canadian Olympians. They are among a long list of riders to boast impressive credentials in the race’s 16-year history, a directory that includes national champions, Olympians and those that have competed on the grand tours of Europe. Sometimes the Tour de Delta acts as a springboard for up-and-coming cyclists, which was the case a dozen or so years ago for the aforementioned Bell, who was an unknown from the Yukon before winning here. Washington state native Tyler Farrar used our local series to launch a career that has seen him win stages of both the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. The race also attracts those at the other end of their spectrum, riders that have reached the pinnacle of the sport and are now winding down their careers. That’s an apt characterization of former three-time Canadian Olympians Gord Fraser and Eric Wohlberg, who gave the young guys all they could handle on the streets of Delta in previous editions. One rider that fits the bill this year is Chris Horner, a 44-year-old American who doesn’t appear to be slowing down despite more than two decades as a professional cyclist. A 2012 Olympian and former top 10 finisher in the Tour de France, Horner holds the distinction of being the oldest rider to win a stage of a grand tour when he captured a leg of the Vuelta a Espana as a 41-year-old in 2013. It would be great to see him add a Tour de Delta title to a resume that includes more than 70 victories worldwide, but even if that doesn’t come to pass this weekend, you can bet Horner and his colleagues will put on a heck of a show.

Voices of opposition to bridge project continue to get louder

I

n the past few weeks opposition to the Massey Bridge (if that’s what it will be called) has become more visible. It’s been there for quite a while, but is becoming more focused. Why? Several say the bridge will not solve a transportation problem, only move it down the road. They say the other parts of the road network such as Oak Street and its bridge will simply get more congested. One study predicts the addition of the bridge will increase travel time as it will encourage even more vehicles to try to navigate the existing roads. Richmond and all Metro Vancouver mayors except Delta are against it as the road network in Richmond will become more congested as more vehicles attempt to use the network. An improved intersection at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 is only one piece of a much more complex network that would need to be expanded. While a provincial study showed about two-thirds of all traffic goes just between Richmond and Delta today, what will the trips look like in say 40 years? Just think of how travel has changed since 1976. Many say the money — likely to be more than $4 billion — needs to be focused on buses and tran-

sit. They do acknowledge, however, that some expansion of the existing capacity to cross the river is needed. Here is where the ideas become numerous. The original government study did not look at adding another tunnel segment of say two to four lanes, only bridges. It’s a bit difficult to trace the evolution as there is considerable evidence to suggest the decision to do away with the tunnel was made behind closed doors as early as 2007. If so, we have been seriously misled. At that time there were some misgivings about reinforcing the tunnel against earthquakes — despite earlier engineering studies recommending it. There were also serious talks going on with the port about the need to

dredge the river bottom to allow for deeper/bigger ships to go up the river. This was the time of Gordon Campbell’s PPPs — public–private partnerships — that were the talk of government. Used on the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges, the contractor paid for the building of the bridge from his own finances and then got repaid from the tolls paid by the users. The bridge belongs to the government but it doesn’t pay a nickel for its operation — unless traffic on the bridge is overestimated and then the government pays the shortfall in tolls to the bridge builder. Today about $100 million per year is paid for the miscalculations on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges. Politically it’s great as they will tell you no taxpayer money is needed for the bridge. The Massey Bridge is going to be built the same way, and you and I will likely pay $10 for a round trip to go to Richmond or beyond. With the $4 billion (or much more) spent on the bridge, it won’t buy even one new bus. Letters

Time for Delta to get its share of gaming revenues with casino

Editor: Re: Mayor urged to change course on casino, letter to the editor, July 1 Having just read Boris Lum’s letter, I feel the need to comment as every one of his statements is cloaked in troubling tones. The premise of his letter appears to be that casinos and gambling are all things bad. His “negative social and moral impacts, dirty revenue, creating a Potterville, and no city worldwide has ever benefitted from gambling” statements are over dramatic and not true. Most people gamble.

Some a little, some a lot. They may enjoy lotto-type games, betting on sporting events, horse race wagering or the games offered in casinos. I purchase lotto tickets weekly and occasionally wager on the horse races at Fraser Downs and Hastings, along with a rare bet on Santa Anita and Del Mar horse races. I am not a casino patron. My wife, on the other hand, likes to play the casino’s one-armed bandits. You cannot control anyone’s “social or moral behaviour” until the

results of their actions are deemed illegal. Canada is a free country. We can make choices. Casinos are highly regulated government approved operations and the money returned to the venue city can hardly be considered “dirty revenue.” It makes no sense having your populace travel to a nearby city to gamble, contributing to their revenue stream. Keep it at home. Lum’s reference to “creating Potterville” is utter nonsense. Does he classify most B.C. cities, including Vancouver, Richmond,

Surrey, Kelowna and Kamloops, as Pottervilles as they all have casinos? His comment that “no city worldwide has ever benefitted from gambling” must come as a complete shock to the B.C. mayors and councils lining up to spend their share of gambling generated revenue. In closing, I am not supportive of his position on this issue and do not believe that a majority of residents in South Delta would support it either. Hopefully, common sense will prevail and a local casino is in my future. Robert W. Craig

Noisy leaf blowers just aren’t necessary Editor: Ever since God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, Adam and his progeny have devised various ways that in their opinion have made life more bearable and to some extent enjoyable. For the most part, success was the result; however, that foregoing success took a nosedive a couple of decades ago when one of Adam’s kin stumbled on the idea of

how to achieve something by doing the opposite of what others considered worthwhile. The wheel of invention turned and somehow the lowly grass rake was deemed to be evil and had to be replaced with a contraption that shattered — and continues to shatter — the quietude of any comfortable area to the point of destroying one’s sensitive hearing. Of course, most modern day occupiers of God’s

world know that in times past, the task of gathering fallen leaves was a simple one: get the appropriate rake, engage in a small amount of physical exercise and rake the apparently offending leaves into a nice pile for future disposal. Now, however, that kin of Adam who stumbled upon a method of scattering those same leaves hither and yon and chasing them all around as they rush here and there

willy-nilly came up with a contraption that not only ruins the quietude of any neighbourhood but also threatens the air those neighbours breathe. Moreover, the users of such a devilish device need to wear ear protection to avoid possible hearing loss and that, in and of itself, is a black mark against their use. Question: Are leaf blowers necessary? Answer: No. SM Cruickshank

Celebrate Confederation Day next July 1

Editor: With Canada’s 150th birthday one year from now in 2017, let’s decide to rid ourselves of the clichéd banality of naming the country’s anniversary Canada Day and instead celebrate Confederation Day to help remind us of our nation’s traditional heritage and historical foundation. As a sad manifestation of the intense insecurity that has developed with regard to our his-

torical national identity, the Canada Act in 1982 changed Canada’s birthday from Dominion Day to the more politically palatable moniker of Canada Day, lest we forget who we are and where we are. Secure in who they are, other countries do not refer to their national days as America Day or France Day or Italy Day. National days commemorate and celebrate historical achievement. The French people gave

birth to their nation on July 14, 1789, and celebrate it as Bastille Day. Americans gave birth to a new nation on July 4, 1776, and celebrate it as Independence Day. Unlike the revolutionary beginnings of France and America, Canada began its devolutionary journey to self-government on July 1, 1867 as the federal Dominion of Canada with the confederation of the three colonies of British North America

into the new provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. So for 2017, let’s resolve to mark Canada’s birthday as Confederation Day. Today,149 years later, confederation — the “coming together” of all of Canada — remains our national challenge, requiring renewed effort and commitment from all of us all year round. E.W. Bopp

TFN malls get kudos for including vehicle charging stations

Editor: There are a small, but growing, number of electric vehicles (EV) used by Delta residents. Your readers might like to know that both malls that will open this fall at the Tsawwassen First Nation have electric chargers for vehicles. Tsawwassen Commons will have a minimum of 20 charging stations and Tsawwassen Mills will have 14 charging stations

for electric vehicles. A big “thank you” to the architects of these new malls. There are many EVs on the market and most are affordable. The provincial government provides discounts on the purchase of a new EV and, with an approved decal, driveronly EVs are allowed in most HOV lanes. See www.cevforbc.ca for more details. It’s not necessary to build more facilities near port

Editor: Re: Public input sought on port’s land purchases, June 22 As reported in the Optimist, the Port of Vancouver is buying up parcels of land in Richmond and Delta to add to the land holdings it already has, some of which are agriculturally zoned. Seems the port is relying more and more on renting lands and assets rather than focusing on its core business of running a sustainable port. CEO Robin Silvester says they are buying land for warehouses and logistics infrastructure. Trouble is that we do not need more warehouses close to the marine terminals. The supply chain does not need nor require off-dock facilities close to the marine terminals. In fact, nearly all other major container terminals around the world use some form of inland terminal. Many also use rail rather than truck to take containers from the

marine terminal to offdock facilities. Why does Port of Vancouver not do the same? Could it be to protect the vested interests of stakeholders? With only 10 per cent of containers coming to the port that are destined for the Lower Mainland, there is no reason to have all the off-dock facilities here. In fact, they can be elsewhere in B.C. or in Alberta. Will we get rid of all local off-dock facilities? No, but we do not need to add more. We need a port management and board that recognizes that our environment and communities are precious and the envy of many. We simply cannot afford to have the Port of Vancouver continue to gobble up land — much of it valuable farmland, wetlands and ecosystems with huge biodiversity — for uses that run counter to the way in which almost every other port around the world does business. Use conveyor belt to move gravel

Editor: How hard would it be to install a temporary conveyor belt across the border and dump the gravel into trucks on the Canadian site for a level one-kilometre haul? The customs problems should be simple, and solve a lot of objections and inconveniences with only effect on both job sites. Ralph Tiessens

You know what I am talking about. Everybody is wondering whether we are in a housing bubble and if so, whether it will burst or not, what affect replacing the tunnel and all the development at the TFN will have on house prices in South Delta, how much foreign investment is affecting the Vancouver market and on and on. We don’t know whether to sell, buy, rent or move somewhere cheaper. There is tremendous uncertainty about timing. What if I buy now and the market collapses? What if I don’t buy and prices just keep climbing? What if I don’t sell and the bottom drops out? What if I do sell and pay rent while watching my old house soar in value?

Minister’s Minute

MIKE MAWHORTER Ladner Baptist Church

The uncertainty consumes us. I can’t predict the housing market. But I can predict this — everyone reading this is going to die. We are all in a life-bubble that is some day going to burst. I once heard Canadian singer/songwriter James

up to 50% OFF

Keelaghan say it this way: “A nephew once asked me when he was quite young, Who dies? I said, ‘Everyone dies’ No use denying it, one day you’re done, Oh, everyone dies.” Jesus put that reality in perspective: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” (Matthew 16:26, NIV) In other words, what good is it if we win big in the housing bubble and lose it all in the life bubble? Think about it. Live Souls features the memoir of Alternês’ father, Alec Wainman, a medical volunteer during the Spanish Civil War, along with 210 of his photographs. The photographs — many of which have never been seen before — were long thought to be lost but were recovered in excellent condition. Alternês was born and raised in Vancouver, and completed his degree at UBC. Lifestyles

11 ways to completely ruin your health Well on Your Way

T

P.J. WREN

here are a lot of ways we can sabotage our own health. Some ways we consciously do, such as Friday night drinks and nachos, while others we aren’t aware have negative effects to our health. Here are 11 that you may not know have harmful and long-term effects to our health and wellbeing: 1. Not getting enough sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to a higher risk of health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. It can also lead to weight gain,

depression, memory problems and moodiness. Sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture for a reason. It’s bad for the body, physically and mentally. Find out how much sleep you need by keeping a sleep journal for a week. For seven days turn off the alarm clock and go to bed only when you are tired and get out of bed as soon as you open your eyes in the morning. At the end of the seven days, average out how many hours a night you were sleeping. This average is what your body needs; it’s your natural sleep pattern. 2. Slouching. Bad posture, over time, can take a serious toll on your spine, shoulders, hips and knees. Offset this by focusing on these muscles when in the gym: middle trapezius muscles, the rotator cuff, the rear deltoids, the glutes and the low back. 3. Don’t eat kale. Or any other vegetable for that matter. Veggies provide nutrients that are vital for the health and mainte-

nance of your body. And if you have young children - start them young. Studies have shown that kids who eat a lot of fruit and vegetables when they are young tend to continue these eating habits when they’re adults. So my loving husband’s very bad eating habits? I blame on his mother. 4. Stress over everything. Most things in life are not a big deal, we just make them into a big deal. Continuously do this and we increase our chances of heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. I cannot stress enough (haha, no pun intended… well, it was kinda intended) the importance of doing yoga and meditating daily. These activities can change lives. I know, they changed mine. 5. Not lifting heavy things. My mission in life is to get every woman on this planet lifting weights. I know, big goal, but weight training is essential for both weight loss and weight maintenance, as well as quality of life.

This goes the same for the men too. Add three to four strength training workouts into your week and start seeing the results in as quick as two weeks. 6. Adding to your muffin top. Measure your waist: if it’s 34 inches or greater (female), or 40 inches and greater (men), you are four times more likely of developing diabetes, three times more likely to have high blood pressure and two times more likely to have heart disease than those whose waists measure smaller. 7. Eating low carb, low fat or low anything. Our bodies need carbohydrates (it’s the fuel of choice for the brain and the muscles), as well as healthy fats. Add whole grains, starchy vegetables and healthy fats from foods such as salmon, avocados, nuts, eggs, olive oil and coconut oil on a daily basis. 8. Not drinking enough water. Dehydration is a total buzz kill for the body. For one, it can present itself as hunger — mak-

ing us eat more when we really should be sipping more and second it can kill a workout. In fact, a two per cent dehydration rate will cause you to perform 20 per cent less than if 100 per cent hydrated. That’s a huge decrease in results when training. 9. You choose sea salt over table salt. Sea salt, and all those other fancy salts on the market are great, however they don’t contain iodine, which is a key element for our thyroid. Only good ol’ table salt does. A healthy thyroid will keep our metabolisms running along smoothly and that in turn keeps our waistlines in check. Add regular table salt to your diet and you can also get iodine from seaweed (hello sushi!), cod, shrimp and eggs. 10. You can’t touch your toes. sue loses water. Add a sedentary lifestyle and a job that has you in one position for most the day (such as sitting behind a desk), and you have the perfect storm. Avoid this storm by practicing some sort of stretching and mobility work on a daily basis. 11. You eat alone. Being by yourself on a regular basis is bad for your health. A recent study published in the Perspectives in Psychological Science found being connected to others was associated with a longer life. They found that loneliness increased a person’s risk of death by 26 per cent and was also linked to obesity, substance abuse, mental health disorders and violence or injury. Connect with loved ones on a daily basis, make plans with friends on a weekly basis and volunteer to keep yourself connected to your fellow human beings. Summer Showcase on now at Gallery 1710 South Delta Artists Guild exhibit runs until Aug. 1 NOREEN FAIRWEATHER

Optimist contributor

Visual art is what we see, right? But how important is visual art in helping us understand something we don’t at first comprehend? A fresh idea, a totally different approach to a difficult problem, a radical political idea? The vibrant work displayed regularly by South Delta Artists Guild members at Tsawwassen’s Gallery 1710 puts each artist’s original mind and talent on show, as in the current Summer Showcase, running through Aug. 1. Is the artist presenting a quiet contemplative watercolour, like Enja Jorge or Ann Hilton, or exploring energetic multi-surfaced paintings like Jan Rankin or Sandra Taylor? A connection is on offer. Artist Nancy Dean, currently serving her second term as guild president, is

also an interior designer and excellent photographer whose interests complement each other well. Cityscapes particularly attract her, and her striking interpretations of Vancouver are popular. Strong angles, deep shadows and intense colours provide motifs, while Vancouver’s rain brings vivid night street and water reflections to put on canvas. An award-winning Tsawwassen artist, she also paints local and foreign landscapes, working in acrylic. Serving with Dean on the new board of directors are: Jan Rankin (vice president), Rod Winning (past president and communications), Mary Ellen Bullock (treasurer), Judith Turner (membership), Lynne Mackenzie (workshops), Gloria Malaka (outside venues), Sandra Taylor (gallery),

Liette Kjorvel (scheduling) and directors at large Beverly Brazier, Al Gejdos, Barbara Lynch and Hilary Matson. At the AGM, the outstanding long-time service of Lorna Wladickuk as treasurer was recognized by her appointment as an honourary member. In presenting her final detailed financial report, she noted the guild is in excellent standing, and the cost of upcoming fall workshops will therefore be reduced. Following Summer Showcase, the next exhibit and sale, Celebration, will run Aug. 4 to 28. The gallery will continue to be open Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Drop-in programs run all summer, Tuesday to Friday, in the studio/workshop at Gallery 1710. Singer/songwriter says it’s an honour to participate

Ladner’s Rosemarie Hurst will be performing at Art After Stroke today in Vancouver. The singer/songwriter will also have her photography on display, along with other stroke survivors, in a fundraiser for the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. The event is billed as a celebration of incredible works by stroke survivors

to raise awareness and funds for important stroke recovery programs. Hurst notes all of the artists and performers are stroke survivors, showing that there is hope after a stroke and that she’s very “honoured and happy to participate in this event.” It will include painting, sculpture, photography, music, comedy and theatre.

Art After Stroke takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Vancouver Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre. Tickets are $30 and available at www.ticketzone.com.

Creategreenoasisthrough Earthwise workshop series

Water is top-of-mind for many during the hot, sunny days of July as we seek out a green oasis in backyards, gardens and parks. Increasingly these rejuvenating summer pleasures are tempered with concerns about water shortages. To help support homeowners, gardeners and anyone interested in learning what they can do to conserve water and protect water quality, Earthwise Society is offering a series of three free Saturday workshops this month. Educational tours of Earthwise’s garden and hands-on demonstrations form the backbone of workshops that showcase practical techniques and tricks to conserve,

collect and re-use water. Education guides will reveal how you can harness some of nature’s wisdom to help create summer refuge spaces. July 9: Rain Gardens at Home: This tour and workshop will outline the big picture of urban planning water concerns from water runoff to stream contamination. Tour through the Earthwise Garden’s own water catchment systems and learn how to prevent water run off with rain gardens. July 16: Gardening for Salmon: Your garden is part of a larger ecosystem that affects waterways, salmon spawning and animal habitat. Learn the importance of ecological features, such as hedgerows, in your small home

garden. July 23: Garden Design for Drought: Play landscape architect for a day. Start with the fundamentals and learn how to apply them to your own space to create a dry garden with less water and less weeds. “By applying tips and techniques from the workshops, you’re helping to recharge our common groundwater and the added bonus is you get to recharge your own batteries with time spent in our nature rich, garden oasis,” says Earthwise executive director Patricia Fleming. All workshops start at 1 p.m. To register for one or all of the workshops, call 604-946-9828, email info@ earthwisesociety.bc.ca or drop by the garden at 6400-3rd Ave.

RUNINN SUMMER CLINICS HAVE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

I

f you happen to be walking by the RunInn Delta on any given Tuesday Night you have probably seen a gathering of athletes. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some young and some older but they are all there for the same reason. They want to be active, stay in shape and improve their fitness.

• sunspots • veins • fine line

The Tuesday Night clinics start at 6:30pm every week and there is a workout group for everyone. There is a Power Walking Group that goes out for 45 minutes to an Hour or more.

• wrinkles • enlarged pores

There is a Learn to Run Clinic that takes you from the couch to 5km. Each week we slowly build the running portion of the workout with lots of walking breaks. The total workout is only 30 minutes.

If you are interested in training for a 10km, Half or Full Marathon the RunInn also offers a Saturday Run Club Workout.

These Saturday groups are a 16 week program designed to help you train for a Fall Half Marathon, Full Marathon or your first 10km fun run. We offer a walking and running group and start at 8 am every Saturday morning starting this July 9th to October 22nd. This clinic is sponsored by New Balance and will include a technical running tee for a price of $70.00 or $4.00 for drop in. Come and give us a try. Come and Join the RunInn for our next Clinic Starting July 15th at 6:30pm.

There is also a 8km Group if you want to build from the Learn to Run group and maybe run your first 8km race. Every Group has a leader. The Tuesday Clinics also include Pace group workouts. These workouts are speed- strength runs that help make you faster. The workouts are shorter in duration but run at a faster pace than your normal runs. These runs can be Track workouts, hill repeats or fartlek runs. These are all variations of speed workouts that will help make you faster.

I signed up for my first “Learn to Run’ clinic at the Run Inn six years ago. I admit that I was intimidated at first because I didn’t know anyone, I wasn’t fast, and I wasn’t very fit. Well, that changed! Five years (and 12 half marathons, 3 full marathons and a sprint triathlon) later, I know I’ll never be fast, I’m much more fit, and I know almost everyone at the clinic. The best thing, is I’ve made so many new friends through the clinic. Many of us refer to the members of the Run Inn clinic as our “Run Inn Family’, and it truly feels like a family.

Courtney has been running with the pace groups in the clinic for five years now and is one of our fastest runners. Here she is on her way to victory in the Ambleside mile

Lawn bowler seeks 2nd gold

Emma Boyd looking to defend her junior provincial championship title IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Emma Boyd is looking to repeat her gold-medal winning performance this weekend in Sidney. The 15-year-old Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club member is set to compete in the 2016 junior provincial championships and is out to defend the title she won last year. Competition starts today and wraps up Sunday morning. “It is very exciting. It’s going to be hard. There are a lot of good players, but I’m just excited for the challenge,” she said. “I’m hoping for a lot of good games. It’s different every single game. I’ve played a couple of these girls three years in a row and I’ve won and they’ve won, so it’s hard to gauge.” The provincials mark two big months of competition for Boyd as she plans to also compete in the U25 nationals in August in North Vancouver. After her gold-medal win last year at provincials, she qualified for her first nationals in Saskatoon, calling it a “fun experience.” Her grandmother Mary Hargreaves, who is the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club junior coach and Vancouver and District

junior director, introduced her to the game. “I started when I was 10. My grandma brought me out and I thought it was a fun game and something that I could do with her,” Boyd recalled. “But as soon as I saw other girls winning and getting the chance to travel to places like Australia, I thought that was really cool. That’s what I want to do — travel all over the world playing the sport that I love.” Naturally, Hargreaves is proud of her granddaughter and what she has accomplished. “We have a little bit of history repeating itself I think,” Hargreaves said. “Our world bronze medalist Pricilla Westlake was mentored by her grandmother Marg Westlake and I’m doing the same with Emma. There are 14 juniors at our club, which is quite a high number. Our club has been a leader really in getting juniors into the game.” Hargreaves said it is important to have young people involved in lawn bowling to ensure the development of the game continues. “If we do not get young people coming along, you can’t sustain the life of the game,” she said. “The amount of success that we

Delta Islanders set franchise record for wins IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The Delta Islanders set a new franchise record for regular season wins — and they didn’t even have to take the floor in their final game to accomplish the feat. Late Tuesday night, the B.C. Junior Amateur Lacrosse League (BCJALL) announced that the

Wednesday night home game between the Islanders and Nanaimo Timbermen was cancelled. Islanders assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie told the Optimist Wednesday afternoon that Nanaimo forfeited the game due to lack of player availability. The forfeit gave Delta its 15th win of the season and clinched second place in

the league standings. “A lot of positives moving forward and trying to break new ground for the Islanders,” said Rennie. “We have a record-setting season, now we want to advance further in the playoffs and hopefully a berth in the Minto Cup.” Also Wednesday, the league announced the dates for the best-of-three wildcard playoff between

the Langley Thunder and Port Coquitlam Saints — July 12, 14 and an if necessary game on July 15. The first-place Coquitlam Adanacs will get the winner of the wildcard playoff in one semi-final series while the Islanders will get New West Salmonbellies in the other semi-final. The series will start either Saturday, July 16 or

Sunday, July 17 in Delta once the league approves the series dates, which is expected in the next few days. “We want to take advantage of a good opportunity and that’s our team’s attitude right now,” he said. “We’re not looking past New West. We are only focused on New West and the opportunity that lies with them.”

Remarkable run ends for Ray Carter Tsawwassen resident’s 40 years as baseball executive includes 16 as Baseball Canada president MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m s i t .co m

A remarkable 40-year run as an executive, including the last 16 as Baseball Canada president, has come to an end for Ray Carter. The longtime Tsawwassen resident officially stepped down at last month’s Baseball Canada AGM in Toronto, making way for New Brunswick’s Jason Dickson. Carter’s tenure was longer than any of the previous nine Baseball Canada presidents. “It’s a bittersweet feeling,” said Carter. “Baseball has been a big part of my life for 40 years, including the 16 as president of Baseball Canada, but it’s time to let somebody else have a crack at it. “I know Jason will be a great leader,” said Carter. “The key (to success) is to be patient, listen to people and lead the orchestra, and great things will happen for Baseball Canada.”

Carter began his association with the summer pastime over 40 years ago as a volunteer coach with Tsawwassen Amateur Baseball. “I didn’t even have a kid on the team, but a coworker asked me to help him coach,” he explained. “Before you know it I was on the league executive.” In 1988, Carter became president of B.C. Minor Baseball, a position he would hold until 1990 when he became president of what is now known as Baseball BC. The same year he became president of B.C. Minor, he became the vice-president of Baseball Canada and was immediately involved with several committees within the organization. In 2000, he was elected president of Baseball Canada. A man who cares deeply about the game from the grassroots level right up to the national teams program, Carter saw his role as an opportunity to grow the game and effect

presidency, he has seen Canada’s world ranking go from outside of the top 10 to an all-time high of sixth and among the world’s powers of the game. He has also witnessed baseball in Canada become more inclusive as programs for female players have grown, including the implementation of the successful Women’s National Team program. Baseball Canada has also adopted the Challenger Baseball program to give children with cognitive or physical disabilities an opportunity to enjoy the thrill of playing baseball and being part of a team. On the grassroots side, the DQ Rally Cap program for initiation players has grown to the point where it now has a national sponsor. “I’m not saying I was solely responsible, but it makes me proud knowing that I was part of a group that led Baseball Canada to where it is today,” added Carter. “I’ve always been a

I love them all.” Although Carter is stepping away from his role as president, he will never remove himself from baseball, as he just loves the game and the people associated with it too much. “Just because I’m not president anymore doesn’t mean I can’t pick up a rake and rake a field,” said the man who has a baseball field named after him in Tsawwassen. “If anybody needs me to sit on a committee or anything like that, I’m here. I’m not finished yet.” Carter was inducted into the Delta Sports Hall of Fame back in 2006.

Come build your dream home in highly desireable Burkeville located on Sea Island. Beautiful location for this 60’ x 126’/120’ lot that is ideal for your new build. The original existing home would need substantial work to make it liveable again. And for that reason it is being sold in an ‘as is where is’ condition. Very easy access to Vancouver, freeways south, and a quick drive over the bridge into Richmond. Burkeville has become one of the most popular neighbourhoods to live in with its sense of safe community living, treelined streets, K-3 school, along with a beautiful park with tennis and basketball courts to enjoy. There is also a community hall that offers excellent daycare for the children, and recreational programs for all ages. Come to Burkeville, and make it home today.

This is a beauty. Walking distance to historic Ladner Village. You will enjoy this 2 bdrm 3 bath spacious townhome. Very open and spacious floor plan, lovely laminate floors opens onto roomy deck with south exposure. Big galley kitchen with nice bright window. Family size dining area. Great for entertaining. 2 full bathrooms upstairs and a powder room on main! Upstairs has two large bedrooms and great closets. This is located in a small 8 unit gated complex. SMITH, Roger Partridge October 31, 1930 - July 2, 2016 .

Roger was born in Middlesex, England, October 31, 1930. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at Wiarton Hospital, July 2, 2016. Loving husband for sixty years and best friend of Jill Smith. Loving father and father-in-law of David and Julie; Rachael and Andrew; Andrew and Kelly; and Timothy and Heidi. Proud and loving grandfather of Taylor and Alexandra; Grace and Emma; Coleman and Gabrielle; and Olivia, Julian and Simon. Roger attended Brentwood School and London University, before he and Jill married and came to Canada in 1957. Through a 35-year career as a civil engineer with Canadian Pacific Railway, Roger and Jill lived in Sudbury, London, Toronto, Port Credit, Winnipeg and Vancouver, making many friends across the country. Roger was a talented and passionate singer who partook in choral music from age 8 through 85. In a life filled with friends and laughter, Roger was a fan of wordplay and a keen crossword puzzler, an avid bridge player, a gamesman, a jigsaw puzzle enthusiast, a music lover, a sailor, a birder, supporter of Abbeyfield homes, and a lover of all things railway. Our deep appreciation goes to Dr. Nelvia Van Dorp and the entire staff at the Wiarton Hospital for their outstanding care and loving support of Roger and Jill. A funeral service will be held at the Trinity Anglican Church in Wiarton, on Thursday July 7, 2016 at 1 PM, with a reception to follow. On request of Roger and Jill please come dressed for a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be directed to the BPHS Wiarton and may be made through the Thomas C. Whitcroft Funeral Home & Chapel, Sauble Beach (519) 422-0041. .

NYSTROM, Loyd July 2, 2016

Dad died on Saturday, July 2. Tired and resigned, after a short battle with failing health, he was ready to let go. He lived the life he wanted, simply, with quiet determination, patience, honesty, and grace. His family is heartbroken. Dad, we love you and will miss you more than words can say. You are gone too soon. Thank you Donna of Gibsons, BC, for your remarkable and enduring friendship; to his good neighbours of Beach Grove − particularly Jack and Joe − with whom he spent many happy hours passing the time of day; and thank you Diana and Walter, Clayton, and other extended family; and to the Rock Hounds, rock carvers, gem cutters and silversmiths, and so many others of you, some who have gone before him or that we don’t know, but all of whom gave his life meaning and purpose. We are grateful for you all.
