‘Working poor’ in all areas
It’s an issue throughout region, although Delta has fewer than most SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Working poverty is a regional problem, although it doesn’t appear as severe in Delta. That’s according to a study released last month by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, which is recommending B.C. adopt a comprehensive poverty reduction plan. The report highlights how the so-called “working poor” are not just concentrated in Vancouver and Surrey but are spread out across the region. The study examines Metro Vancouver working poverty trends by neighbourhood pre- and post2008 recession. “We are often told that the solution to poverty is for the poor to ‘get a job’ or for various sectors to create more jobs. But this study finds that a job is not a guaranteed path out of poverty. Over 100,000 working-age people in Metro Vancouver were working but stuck below the poverty line in 2012, not counting students and young adults living at home with their par-
ents,” states the report, also a co-publication of the United Way of the Lower Mainland and the B.C. Poverty Reduction Coalition. The report finds that not only are deep poverty and homelessness highly visible on the streets of Vancouver, hidden poverty and economic insecurity are serious problems across the region. “Deep poverty is primarily a story of inade-
quate welfare rates, which remain stuck at levels far below what people need to survive. But the majority of British Columbians living in poverty do not rely on welfare. Fewer than four per cent of British Columbians receive social assistance at any given time, a small share of the more than 14 per cent of people living in poverty,” the report adds. It notes a recent study published by the Metcalf
Foundation found that Metro Vancouver had the second-highest rate of working poverty of any major city in Canada in 2012, with a rate only slightly lower than Greater Toronto. The latest report goes further by mapping the extent of working poverty and its growth by neighbourhoods. Municipalities with the lowest rates in 2012 included Delta (5.7 per
cent), Pitt Meadows (5.4 per cent), Port Moody (5.5 per cent) and Maple Ridge (5.7 per cent) A map showed a couple of stretches in North Delta by Scott Road that were higher than the rest of Delta. Those higher rate clusters merged into a large cluster of centralnorthern Surrey that has a rate of 10 to 15 per cent. The report adds working poverty can be reduced and eventually eliminated with a combination of labour market reforms, more generous income supports and better public services. The report made a number of policy recommendations, including the province investing in social housing. Delta this year hired a social planner who is currently undertaking a review of social issues in the municipality. The request to hire a social planner first came before Delta council a couple of years earlier from the Canadian Federation of University Women of South Delta, which warned about hidden and childhood poverty in the community.
Public can make comment on terminal application DAVE WILLIS

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority president and CEO Robin Silvester gave Delta council an update on the Terminal 2 proposal this week. The application is now
formally in the panel phase of the environmental process, he said Monday. “We expect it be a 14-month review process,” Silvester said, adding there’s a four-month public comment period underway now.
After the three-member panel conducts its environmental assessment, it will submit a report to the federal minister of environment and climate change who will then make a decision on whether the project can move forward.
T2 is a proposed threeberth terminal that would provide 2.4 million TEUs of capacity adjacent to the three-berth Deltaport terminal at Roberts Bank. The public can send submissions to review panel manager Debra Myles by email at Panel.

There’s nothing suspicious about lost driver’s U-turn at U.S. border South Delta Crime Beat
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN
• July 5, 9:42 p.m., 500block of Ferry Causeway: Police attended the area at the request of the Department of Fisheries while they seized 1,300 pounds of crab. Police stood by and the seizure was made without incident. • July 7, 7:49 p.m., Point Roberts border crossing: Border officer reported a vehicle with an Ontario
license plate did a U-turn prior to entering the U.S. Police located and pulled the vehicle over at Highway 17 and 48th Street. In discussion with the border officer, it was determined it was a misunderstanding and that the male was lost and took a wrong turn. The suspect was released from the scene without charges. • July 10, 1 a.m., 56th Street and Highway 17: Police observed a person cycling across both lanes of the highway after dark without lights. Police stopped the suspect and found the bike was stolen and that the suspect also had an arrest warrant for break and enter. The suspect was arrested and transported to cells in relation to the arrest warrant. He was served a violation ticket for cycling after dark without lights and was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date in relation to the stolen bike. • July 10, 3:42 p.m., Ferry Causeway: A ferry employee left his backpack in an area on the top
vehicle deck and when he went to retrieve the backpack it was gone. The complainant suspected two intoxicated passengers with a Rottweiler and followed them to the parking lot. When he located the suspects, he spotted his backpack over the shoulder of the male and a confrontation ensued. With the assistance of other crew members the suspects were apprehended and held for police. Police attended and arrested the suspects for theft, uttering threats and assault.
LADNER
• July 4, 9:28 p.m., 7400block of Vantage Way: A business reported that over the weekend three boats in the enclosed yard were broken into and rummaged throughout. Approximately $700 worth of items were stolen and the boats suffered approximately $700 in damage. Forensic identification officers attended to fingerprint and photograph the scene. • July 4, 2:06 a.m., Harvest Drive and Ladner
Trunk Road: Police found a male sleeping at the bus stop and determined he was intoxicated and unable to care for himself. The suspect was transported to cells and held until sober. • July 6, 12:37 p.m., 5700-block of Deltaport Way: Police received a report that a truck was blocking both lanes of the highway. Police attended and located a tractor trailer unit that had attempted to make a U-turn and got the unit stuck. A towing company removed the truck. The driver was issued a ticket for driving without consideration. • July 6, 10 a.m., 4800block of 48th Street: Police attended the area following a report of loud hammering coming from a house. A truck was located in front of the residence with stolen license plates. A male entered the vehicle and when police requested he leave the vehicle, he refused and attempted to put the vehicle in gear. A physical confrontation was initiated by the suspect who subsequently fled the scene in the vehicle.
Gertrude came to the shelter after she was spotted hopping around a Tsawwassen neighbourhood for two days before we were able to trap her. We don’t know where Gertrude came from but she was looking a little rough when she arrived at the shelter. With that said Gertrude is tolerant of handling but is currently a little nervous of people. Gertrude needs to be spayed before she’ll be available for adoption. We aren’t sure how Gertrude is with other rabbits yet and she’s just starting to figure out her litter box. We can’t wait to tell you more about this fuzzy topped little lady! Stay Tuned...

Rural doctors share surprising tales
South Delta Secondary grad Paul Dhillon, now a GP in remote Saskatchewan, edits book IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Imagine a place where everyone knows your name, your family history — your life story? Now imagine getting to treat those same people on a daily basis in rural Canada where the need for doctors is an ever-growing concern? These are just some of the inspirations behind a former South Delta Secondary grad’s idea to edit the new book: In The Surprising Lives of SmallTown Doctors. Paul Dhillon was class valedictorian when he graduated from SDSS in 1999. Little did he know then he would be a practicing doctor in rural and remote Saskatchewan — much less researching and editing a book on the subject. In The Surprising Lives of Small-Town Doctors, physicians put down their stethoscopes and pick up their pens to share some of the most frightening and pivotal moments of
their careers. From making igloo house calls to bandaging animal bites to performing surgeries they are ill-equipped to do, doctors tell of the many rewards of practicing medicine in small communities. They also detail the fears, failures and challenges of providing health care in northern and remote areas — where the need for doctors is the greatest. Collectively, these stories capture the spirit, innovation and resilience of these rural doctors and the communities they serve. “There are physicians across the country silently sitting and listening to their patients’ stories, empathizing with their pain, and then smiling at the successes of their quiet daily work,” Dhillon writes in the preface of the book. “Unnoted beyond their communities, they continue silently. It was only after searching hard that I was able to find and pluck these individuals away from their work and to convince them to
write openly — to share their secret fears and their individual moments of clarity and victory over the scourge of disease and the misfortune of injury. “Personally, I believe there is an intrinsic and therapeutic benefit to the physician as a human being to be able to express and share their thoughts with the interested public, which allows for both internal and, much needed, external reflection.” In lieu of any royalty payments, the editor and the authors have agreed all such proceeds shall go to Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders. Readers in any part of Canada can order Surprising Lives on Amazon and Indigo. It’s also available at select Chapters-Indigo locations and some independent bookstores. SUBMITTED PHOTO

comes to the gender equity issue, but there are many factors why some women choose not to enter politics. “I don’t think it is quite the problem that some see it to be,” Jackson said. “If you are a mom and you have children, it’s very difficult to balance political life and your family. Your family is turned upside down when you are in politics. Perhaps some women feel it just might not be worth it because you have to put everything — everything ahead of your family. You miss out on many, many things. I think there are a lot of women who just choose not to put politics before family.” Jackson said it really is all about achieving a balance. “It depends on individual circumstances as well as life choices,” she added. “You have to have the passion and you leave almost everything else behind. There is a whole story here for not only women, but also with men. You have to be very tough skinned, you can’t misstep because people will crucify you, so you have to have a huge passion and some ability, but it’s not just about the numbers — you have to have the right people.” Jackson, who is in her sixth term as mayor, was first elected to the top post in 1999, replacing Beth Johnson, who retired after three terms. Huntington, who made history in 2013 by becoming the first independent MLA ever to be reelected in Victoria, has represented Delta South since 2009. She replaced Val Roddick who served from 1999 to 2009. Federally, Delta has had two female MPs since John Cummins retired after an 18-year run. Kerry-Lynne Findlay held the seat from 2011 to 2015 but was defeated by Qualtrough last fall.

Firefighters responded to a call in the 3100-block of River Road West July 3 and found a vehicle fire had spread to a barn. It took approximately three hours to deal with
the fire, said deputy Chief Brad Wilson, noting it had reached the upper floor and roof of the barn. “It was a great save,” he said. “We were really limited with water supply

t’s a strange feeling to see the words “final approval” and “Southlands” in the same sentence. The soap opera that has been Tsawwassen’s most controversial piece of real estate, and the acrimony it engendered in the community for decades, made it seem like we would never, at least not in my lifetime, find a palatable resolution. Yet lo and behold, there were members of Delta council giving fourth and final reading Monday night to a development application put forward by the Century Group, the company that has owned the acreage in question for the last quarter-century. When you look back on what’s transpired over the years, and where we’re at today, I can’t help but think a middle ground was reached and an issue that had divided neighbours and generally plagued the community has finally — thankfully — been put to rest. I realize there’s a contingent out there that wanted the entire site to remain as farmland, but to transfer 80 per cent of it into public hands, along with millions to upgrade drainage and irrigation, has to be considered a coup for the municipality. That’s not to suggest Century lost in the deal as the long-time South delta development company will make out quite nicely thanks to approval for 950 housing units and associated commercial space. In addition to lining Century’s pockets, hopefully those units will address the lack of options facing first-time buyers and empty nesters. Final approval means work can actually start on the site, which also means a new round of complaining can begin, although technically we’ve got a jump on that with concerns already being voiced over fill coming from a quarry across the line in Point Roberts. However, once the housing is occupied, the Market Square becomes a destination and the farm starts producing, the Southlands’ contentious past will be forgotten and Tsawwassen’s newest neighbourhood will simply become another part of an enviable community. There will be no more divisiveness, no more uncertainty, no more proposals, no more public hearings, no more petitions and no more letters to the editor. There’s a lot to like about the Southlands development, but what it brings to an end might be even more worthwhile.
Kids not only grow food, but learn how to get it to plate
H
ere we are a couple of weeks in to the summer break and I must say that I have been enjoying the odd day of rain and cooler than seasonal normal temperatures. At this time last year we were in Stage 3 watering restrictions and all of the Project Pickle school farms were in danger of losing crops the kids had worked so hard to grow. These challenges on small lots are micro snapshots of real world problems faced by farmers here in Delta and everywhere else. It is important the kids understand these things. This year I have some more help, which is great, and we are off to a successful start to summer. We will soon be harvesting lots of lettuce, kale, chard and spuds, and our first delivery to the food bank will be next Wednesday. In a few weeks we will begin to see the first cucumbers from the hundreds of vines that are flourishing on Delta School District school farms. I have been really pleased to see the progress we have been making and it has been especially rewarding to see so many children embracing the understanding of what it takes to grow their own food. Another aspect of food that we will be spending more time on next school year is the broader food economy and what it takes to put food on the shelves in a

retail environment. I call this “seed to burger” and it chronicles the path of farming, processing, logistics and retail. These lessons will dovetail with current curricula for grades 4 to 6 where social studies addresses issues such as trade and understanding of the supply chain and primary industry. I was fortunate to attend a Port of Vancouver educational session with a class of Grade 5 kids from Vancouver a couple of weeks back at their new Discovery Centre at Canada Place. The centre has a massive interactive touch screen display and the hour-long session teaches kids many aspects of port function that are very interesting indeed. A highlight for me, and the kids, was an exercise where six students would put on costumes representing areas of the supply chain. The rest of the class had to assemble the supply chain so that
in this case, a mandarin orange, would make it from farmer to consumer. It didn’t take long for the youngsters to line up the farmer, ship captain, longshoreman, truck driver, grocery store retailer and consumer. In the 2015/2016 school year, 147 presentations were made to 157 classes at 96 schools, reaching a total of 4,055 students. Of those presentations, 25 were made in Delta to 666 students. There was increased participation in Delta this year over last (2014/2015: 389 students from seven schools; 2015/2016: 666 students from 13 schools). Port of Vancouver is supporting Project Pickle and I am happy to say that we will be collaborating on lessons tailor-made to tell the story of food production and logistics here in Delta. These exciting initiatives in our school district would not have been possible without the support of our board of education and superintendent Dianne Turner, whom you may have heard is leaving the district to take on the role of chief educator with the Ministry of Education. The ministry just got a lot stronger. Congratulations and best of luck to Turner and to incoming superintendent Doug Sheppard. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Add six-lane tunnel to existing one Bridge critics aren’t
Editor: Re: Twinning George Massey Tunnel not a viable option, letter to the editor, July 6 At last we have the inklings of a reasoned debate on the “tunnel vs. bridge” Massey crossing replacement issue. Thank you, Dylan Kruger. So, Todd Stone said the existing tunnel’s services (not the structure) has about 10 years of useful life remaining and that the tunnel could be damaged (by an earthquake, presumably) if there weren’t further seismic upgrades carried out. I wouldn’t necessarily trust the public statement of a minister of transportation desperate to justify his government’s decision made in secret just before an election. But even taking his assertions at face value, a

A 10-lane bridge isn’t necessary, a letter writer says. new six-lane tunnel alongside the existing 50-yearold tube would allow all traffic to be switched over to the new tunnel initially — with a 50 per cent capacity increase — while the work to upgrade the existing tunnel’s services and seismic standards could be completed unhindered by traffic flows. Why, even the side walls could be brightened with
the shiny white surfacing we see on newer tunnels around the world, which should keep Kruger happy. And I agree with him on this. And all of this work — the construction of a new tunnel, the upgrading of the existing one and commissioning of both in tiptop condition for 10 lanes of traffic — could very comfortably be completed within the time it would
Corporate interests should not rule
Editor: Some British Columbians still hold a small flicker of hope that Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals will, for once, put the welfare of its citizens ahead of big business. Yet time and time again, this small flicker is extinguished by the actions of this supposedly (ahem) “liberal” government. Once more, Clark has shown who she represents and, unfortunately, it is not average British Columbians. Thinly veiled as an initiative to address our traffic problems, the government has committed
to build the largest bridge ever constructed in B.C. However, a very superficial analysis of this mega project reveals that not only is the bridge economically and ecologically unwise, but it also will not address our traffic issues. What will it accomplish? The $3.5 billion, 10-lane, tolled replacement for the George Massey Tunnel would accommodate U.S. thermal coal freighters and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supertankers on the south arm of the Fraser River. The old adage “follow the money” has never seemed more appropriate. Notwithstanding, however, there is, admittedly,
little doubt the traffic congestion in this corridor of Highway 99 must be addressed. We do need to transport people and goods in a more efficient manner. However, without an overall cohesive regional plan to reduce traffic gridlock and improve transit in Greater Vancouver, this new bridge will simply move the bottleneck from one area to another. Jack Trovato
Editor: Re: Voices of opposition to bridge project continue to get louder, Community Comment, July 8 I know a fellow Deltan who can’t talk about the bridge project without referring to the content of anyone voicing opposition as “bull****.” There is no argument that something has to be done soon. There are good comments published in the Optimist offering alternative viewpoints, and your recently published opinion piece by Ian Robertson on this topic was timely. I can tell my friend that a professional engineer, who lives and worked here for many years, con-
tinues the dialogue on this topic for good reason, not out of ignorance or for some other nefarious agenda. His article tells me the bridge idea was simmering on the provincial Liberal backburner for years until it was pronounced done and ready to be served up on a silver platter to the public and their respective municipalities, whether they like it or not. Democracy is alive and well when people speak loudly about their vested interests in quality of life issues if the wrong people are in power making wrong decisions. That’s why we have elections. to use Westminster Avenue and 57th Street to get out of town. At 4:15 p.m., it took three traffic lights to turn left onto Ladner Trunk Road. That was a lightbulb moment: I thought not one person is living in Hampton Cove development yet. Scary. A note to the crossing guards at Neilson Grove Elementary: It will be a lot busier for you in the future. Never mind turning onto Trunk Road from 57th Street. I’m not against development, but ask that Delta council members please show some moral ethics and think about moving people before approving projects. Rob Welsh

Where will all the traffic go?
Editor: After completing my civic duties by paying my property taxes, I thought I could voice my issue to Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta council in this format. When the Hampton Cove development in Marina Gardens was approved, I can understand the euphoria of the tax dollars coming to Delta with 84 high density units. My question is was there ever anybody from council or in the engineering department that put up a hand and asked: “How are we going to get these people in and out of Ladner efficiently?” On a recent Sunday when the Ladner Village Market was on, I decided
take to build a 10-lane bridge and reconfigure the north and south interchanges necessary to feed it. What Kruger fails to address, and I would be very interested in his views, are the more complex traffic requirements and the longer construction time of the bridge option, along with the associated cost premium. We now read that Metro Vancouver has had to become more vociferous in its opposition to the bridge in order to be heard in Victoria. Only one mayor, that being our own Lois Jackson, is in favour of the bridge. Perhaps she is preparing the path to a political position in Victoria when she retires at the next municipal election? HUB making cycling safer in Delta
Volunteer committee looks to make inroads now that it has the lay of the land PATRICK THOMPSON
Optimist contributor
With summer now upon us, it’s great to see more people out cycling. At Delta HUB, we’re always looking to hear about your ride. As a volunteer cycling committee, we try to put a voice to the concerns and goals of the community. In so doing, we represent the full spectrum of cyclist — from the curious to the recreational to the daily commuter. Much like any citizenled initiative, progress requires a combination of patience, collaboration and polite prodding. As we’ve discovered, transportation decision-
up to 50% OFF
making involves many different groups. This includes two local governments (Delta, TFN), the province (Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure) and the region (Metro Vancouver, TransLink). It can also involve the private sector — such as developers — who, with vision, can help realize key improvements. In our committee’s first year we focused on understanding the lay-of-theland. Together we assessed the travel corridors and documented the deficiencies, which we continue to track with engineering and operations staff. During the past year, our focus has grown to include understanding the

decision making process and, in particular, how to contribute the “cycling perspective.” Whether for the Highway 17 widening, George Massey Tunnel replacement or local roadway improvements, we’ve gained insight into priority setting, coordinated planning and the road standards that govern most decisions. We’ve also tried to share these learnings by encouraging community members to attend our monthly meetings, sign up for our distribution list or check out our findings (at https://bikehub.ca/delta). Now that we “speak the language,” we’d like to see more progress in the years ahead. One good start might be the creation of dedicated greenways to safely connect the places we want to go — whether it’s the town centres, the waterfront, schools or the emerging job centres at Boundary Bay Airport, Tilbury and TFN. Our mandate isn’t revolutionary; but rather, evolutionary. As citizens,

ICBC invested over $100,000 in 11 road improvement projects in Delta last year in an effort to make roads safer. “Since 1990, we’ve invested more than $138 million in road improvement projects and studies across B.C. to help reduce death and injury on our roads,” said Mark Blucher, ICBC’s president and CEO. Of the 11 Delta projects, all but one were partnerships with the Corporation of Delta; the other was in conjunction with the province’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Drivers make errors for a large number of reasons, and in a complex road system many things can go wrong,” said Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Morris. “ICBC’s road improvement program ensures that good road design helps drivers avoid mistakes.” The South Delta projects included:
• Wallace Avenue from 52A Street to Wallace Place — Corridor upgrade with sidewalk, curb and gutter installation (north side), and street lighting. • 72nd Street from south of Progress Way to River Road — Corridor upgrade with sidewalk installation. • Ladner Trunk Road and 88th Street — Widening at the intersection to accommodate turning heavy single unit farm vehicles as well as bus bay improvements, street lighting and a full traffic signal. • 12th Avenue and Morris Crescent — Upgraded marked crosswalk with overhead pedestrian activated flashing lights. • 47A Avenue and Delta Street — Upgraded marked crosswalk with overhead pedestrian activated flashing lights. • 56th Street and 9th Avenue — Installation of a new traffic signal and traffic surveillance camera.

Deltassist announced this week that its Ladner and Tsawwassen offices will join together and move to a much larger space in Ladner Village on July 29. The address of the new office is 202–5000 Bridge St. The Ladner phone
number will remain the same at 604-946-9526. To facilitate the move, the Tsawwassen office will be closed as of July 26 and the Ladner office will be closed as of July 28. The new combined office will re-open at the new location on Aug. 2.
Delta awards contract for airport fire hall Delta council approved this week awarding a $523,650 contract for construction management services for a new fire hall at Boundary Bay Airport. A report to council explained that construction management differs from a general contrac-
tor approach because “instead of designing the entire job and tendering it to a single general contractor, the construction manager is engaged early in the process to act as the owner’s representative in ensuring the design is cost-efficient and build-
able, to assist with tendering and award of multiple trade contracts and to coordinate and supervise the work.” The project has a budget of just over $8 million. The report noted each component related to construction will be tendered
separately and brought to council for approval. The 3.5 per cent property tax hike for 2016 included 1.5 per cent towards the fire hall project. The Optimist previously reported construction is scheduled to begin next year.

A UBC research study is creating a lot of buzz within the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust’s Hedgerow Stewardship Program. Martina Clausen is leading a team of volunteers in their second summer of research to identify which wild bee species live in Delta’s farmlands and which habitat supports bees best. “Within the past decade we have seen the bee population declining — not just honey bees, but also wild bees,” Clausen said. “People seem to be very aware of the honey bee colony collapse, but not that many people know about wild bees, how many wild bee species there are and what importance wild bees play to human food production. Hopefully we can find out about the plants that support wild bees and can counteract their decline.” With the addition of four new sites identified this summer by the trust, Clausen and her team are now collecting data from eight sites. “The primary objective of this study is to develop a set of basic data for a comparison between each of these three semi-natural habitats (planted hedge-
rows, remnant hedgerows and grass margins) that will enable a better understanding of their capability to support bee populations by providing floral resources,” Clausen said. By mid-August, Clausen plans to wrap up the research and begin analyzing the data, which she expects will take her until the end of the year. She will then write her thesis and defend her thesis in early spring of next year. Clausen moved to Vancouver from Switzerland with a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering and a vague idea of pursuing research in the field of agriculture and biodiversity. When she started her graduate studies at UBC with the sustainable agricultural landscapes lab in January, she knew very little about bees. Luckily the UBC lab had been successfully collaborating with the trust on several projects, so she became familiar with their work. When she began her research little was known about the status and effect of hedgerow conservation efforts on local bee communities. “Long-term monitoring of pollinators is urgently required to provide information on status and
trends for most species,” she said. Christine Terpsma, the trust’s program coordinator, said Clausen’s work might help the organization boost the pollinator carrying capacity of local farmland hedgerows, which is very exciting. “Farmers have planted native trees and shrubs within the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust’s Hedgerow Stewardship Program for over 20 years,” said Terpsma. “In the past we’ve evaluated many habitat elements and benefits provided by our hedgerows, including bird species inventories and soil carbon storage. Martina’s work will assist our organization in refining the management of the program in order to increase native pollinator benefits. If we know what type of pollinators are currently using agricultural hedgerows and which plant species they prefer, we can tailor our plant list for future projects.” Clausen said sharing her findings with the public has been very enjoyable. “Most people are surprised when they see how diverse and incredibly beautiful bees can be,” she said. “I hope as people become aware of those
other pollinators and the important work they’re doing, this will be a first step in people’s appreciation and willingness to help protect those little creatures.”

Have you ever had one of those connections with someone that lasts a lifetime even though you don’t see them or speak regularly? There’s just a click between you that says, “I’ll always be there for you.” Well, 30 years ago I had a church youth group that met regularly on Saturday evenings. David was a member of that group, a faithful young man who loved outdoor sports, his family and church family. David called me this week and said, “Hi, it’s David, do you remember me?” Wow, do I ever remember David. David always had a place in my heart, not because of anything he did, but because of who

he was. He was gentle in heart and had a generous and thankful spirit that knew God’s love carried him through life. “I needed to talk to someone,” he said. “I was
in Afghanistan for nine months serving in the military, and as a soldier, I took two lives… I’m having a hard time.” I am incredibly thankful for many things, but two things stand out for me – the Rev. Jim Short is my neighbour and I lean on him and his wisdom when I am confronted with such grief (David will be calling Jim). Secondly, and perhaps more profoundly, I am thankful that I could tell David that God still loved him, and God also loved those who died in battle that day. It’s true for all of us… God loves us always and will never abandon us. That’s a connection you can count on.

Miss Teen Delta off to Toronto for pageant Tiara Thorley is ‘really excited’ DAVE WILLIS

Tiara Thorley will be representing Delta at the Miss Teenage Canada pageant in Toronto. “I’m really excited,” she said, noting the pageant starts Sunday and runs over the course of seven days, including three “competition nights.” The 18-year-old from Tsawwassen received the title of Miss Teenage Delta 2016 after finishing among the top finalists at a provincial pageant in April. She said it was her first time being in a pageant. “I did go into it with no
expectations,” the Little Flower Academy grad said, adding her acting background in plays and musicals really helped. As part of being Miss Teenage Delta, Thorley is trying to raise awareness about eating disorders. She said she’s been working with Looking Glass, a Vancouver foundation that helps people, and their families, struggling with eating disorders. Thorley said she’ll study at Queens University in Ontario in September. She said she wants to major in psychology and work towards becoming a constitutional lawyer.

Beach Grove Elementary’s Me to We group has raised nearly $7,000 through a spell-athon to benefit a lunch program for Ugandan students. “I’m just so impressed with the compassion, empathy and hard work of this year’s Grade 7 We group,” said teacher sponsor Joanne Calder. “They have been so dedicated all year, and their caring and compassion for others has left me speechless.” The group put together a presentation along with lists of nutrition-themed words for students to learn. Students then asked friends and family for pledges. The proceeds will help feed students at the Tekera Primary School, which is part of a project overseen by the International Community Empowerment Foundation, a locally initiated organization formed

The lunch program costs about $3,000 annually, she noted. Casey said she talks to students each year as part of a Schools For Schools initiative and said this particular group of kids had already read a range of books on children in developing nations. “Somehow the teachers
have encouraged the kids to actually take a look outside Beach Grove and look at the global community to which they belong,” she said. Calder added she would like to thank the whole Beach Grove community for getting behind the kids and helping this cause. She said their focus this year, in social studies and language arts, has been on global issues and the United Nations’ global goals.

Artists ready to race Second edition of the Grand Prix of Art Delta takes place Sunday in Ladner DAVE WILLIS

rtists will be racing in Ladner Village Sunday as part of the second Grand Prix of Art Delta. “We’re expecting to have a full house,” says Artists in the Village president/founder Mary Ann Burrows, noting there should be 100 artists taking part in the plein air painting race. She says last year’s inaugural event was successful thanks in large part to the amount of community support, starting from the Corporation of Delta to the many volunteers who helped out. “I think it went really, really well in the first year,” says Burrows, adding that winning a Delta Chamber of Commerce Hats Off to Excellence award for the event was “icing on the cake.” Artists will be painting at various spots, 25 in total, throughout the village from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. They will be judged on basically three criteria areas — capturing the spirit of the location, the creativity of the artwork and the technical handling of the medium they choose to work in. Due to the road construction on Delta Street, there will be more painting sites along the Ladner waterfront, including the park area near the Seven Seas building and down towards Speed’s Pub, she explains. Burrows also notes that if the weather holds out, a few antique cars will be brought into the village so competitors can incorporate them into their paintings. Adding to the atmosphere of the event will be live music. “There’s going to be music throughout the village,” Burrows says. The Delta Community Music School will also provide music at the artist/volunteer lunch on the lawn in front of the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre. That is also the site where

Hungry spectators can visit three different food trucks — Rocky Point Ice Cream, Old Country Pierogi and Roaming Dragon, which are scheduled to be at the event. Spectators are encouraged to watch the painters while they work. “We just ask they don’t disturb the artists, because it is a timed race,” says Burrows. At every location there will be volunteers from the Artists in the Village society to answer the public’s questions. There are adult and youth categories once again with about $2,000 in prizes up for grabs. The event concludes with an art show and sale from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre. The public will be able to vote for a special
“people’s choice” award at the sale. Visit www.artistsinthevillage. com for more information.

Delta Islanders celebrate their provincial Midget A1 championship after going undefeated at the six team event in Coquitlam.
Historic win for Delta Lacrosse Islanders become first team in association to win Midget A1 provincial title
Delta Lacrosse is celebrating its first Midget A1 provincial championship in association history. The Islanders capped a historic campaign with 9-5 win over the Ridge Meadows Burrards in Sunday’s goal medal game in Coquitlam. Delta went undefeated over the five-day tournament that featured the top six teams in B.C. The breakthrough achievement is nothing new for an outstanding group of second-year (2000 born) players who also reached the top of the podium two years ago at the Bantam A1 championships. These boys almost delivered a provincial field title back February, falling to New West in the U15 gold medal game. Coached by Darron Alexander, Chris McCluskie, Tanner Taylor, Garret Holmes and Stephen Alexander, the Islanders showed a bit of rust coming off a 10-day layoff and battled Coquitlam to a 6-6 tie in their opening game. The locals then served notice on Thursday
with a big 10-8 victory over No. 1 seed Port Coquitlam. Delta jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before the Saints stormed back to pull even at 6-6. It set the stage for an exciting finish and the Islanders picking up two valuable points. It provided momentum for a 10-7 triumph over Vancouver Island champions Saanich Tigers and a 16-4 romp of Okanagan rep Penticton Heat. The Islanders concluded round-robin play Saturday morning with a 10-6 win over Ridge Meadows to clinch first place and a semi-final berth. That set the stage for a rematch with Coquitlam. Continuing with their quick ball movement and disciplined play, they rolled to an impressive 15-9 victory to book their spot in Sunday’s final. The Burrards were hungry to avenge their only loss of the championships but Delta opened the scoring just 10 seconds in and would never look back.
Outstanding play by all the boys with roundrobin Game MVPs going to Haiden Dickson, Braden Maskell (G), Mark Yingling (A), Arjun Singh and Mitch Sandberg. The semi-final and final game MVPs were awarded to Owen Borthwick and Jarvis Dashkewytch(G). During the recognition ceremonies, Dickson was named to the provincial all-star team and tournament game MVP. Dashkewytch received the Warrior Fair Play Award, while Jake Cantlon (A) earned a $500 Subway Zone 5 Lacrosse player scholarship award. Rounding out the roster are captain Dean Kishuichi, assistant captain Jared Moloci, Jackson McCleod, Max Stalling, Jon Grieg, James Grieg, John Woodward, Mitch Godlonton, Zack Kyriacethys. Bantam A1 call ups for provincials were Rhys Porteous, while Midget A2 goalie Ashton LeClair rounded out the tournament roster. Manager Jeff Stalling and Delta’s VP Minor lacrosse Noel Wiber assisted on the bench.
Ladner hosting 3 games this weekend with playoffs underway It will be an action-packed weekend of playoff lacrosse at the Ladner Leisure Centre A busy stretch begins Saturday at 5 p.m. when the Ladner Pioneers open up the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association playoffs against the Victoria Wolves. The best-of-three series continues Sunday in the provincial capital and will return to Ladner next Tuesday, if necessary. The Pioneers (9-4-0-1) settled for third place after dropping an 8-7 decision to the Langley Warriors on Tuesday in what was a showdown for first place. The loss left Ladner tied for sec-
ond with Nanaimo but the Timbermen earned a first round bye thanks to sweeping the regular season series. The Delta Islanders are in search of their first berth in the Provincial Intermediate “A” Championships in recent memory but need to get past the Victoria Shamrocks first. The teams open the best-of-three qualifying series on Saturday in Victoria, then return to Ladner for game two Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Shamrocks (13-5) finished fourth and the Islanders (12-6) were right behind them. The winner will advance to the provincials
B.C. Day Weekend in Langley. The boxla playoff weekend will conclude Sunday at 5 p.m. when the Delta Islanders and the New West Salmonbellies open their much-anticipated best-of-seven B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League semi-final series. At stake is a berth into next month’s Minto Cup thanks to the tournament taking place in Langley. Delta went 15-6 in league play and edged New West 2-1 in the season series. Game two is slated for Tuesday night at Queen’s Park Arena.

Red Sox roll in Newton Ladner Red Sox opened the Midget all-star baseball season in fine fashion by winning the Diane Cook Tournament in Newton. The weekend started off with a 14-4 victory over the host Newton Canadians. That was followed up with an 11-0 rout against the Abbotsford Angels. Once again, the defence was stingy with many great plays and the bats were strong as the team pounded 18 hits. The final round-robin game was against Kamloops, which was also sporting a 2-0 record. The battle for first place in the division went to Ladner with an impressive 4-1 victory. The pitcher’s duel resulted in only four hits for Ladner and three for Kamloops. Ladner topped the Campbell River
Jane Meadows Ja
Tyees 12-8 in the semi-finals to set up a showdown with the Prince George Knights in the championship game. Ladner came out with one of its strongest efforts of the tournament and shut down an extremely good hitting team on the way to a 7-1 victory. The defense was as strong as it had been all weekend and the pitching remained outstanding. The Red Sox roster includes: Taylor Adamson, Devin Basi, Jared Baltzer, Jordan Bogress, Matteo Corea, David Cordukes, Jordan Dawson, Isaac Embree, Cam Gray, Braydon Lyons, Ryan MacKenzie, Daelen Magcalas, Aneel Nijjar, Will Robinson and Parker Strukoff. The coaching staff consists of Rob Bogress, Russ Gray, Brian Burns, Brian Yamasaki and Ray Beisick.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Monica Widdra on July 1st, 2016 at the age of 90. Monica was born in Riga, Latvia. After raising her family in Neuss, Germany, she came to live in Tsawwassen in 1990 together with her husband Gerhard, who predeceased her in 1997. She will be lovingly remembered as a supportive wife, mother, grandmother and friend, as well as an avid traveler, skat player, and enthusiastic tennis fan. She leaves to mourn her daughters Uli Marler (Allan) and Christine von Saarn (Paul), and grandchildren Angus, Nonie, and Christian. Rest in peace Mum, you are free now. We love you and you are forever in our hearts. No service by request.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment. If you have responded to an ad which you believe to be misleading please call the: Better Business Bureau at 604-682-2711 Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm or email: inquiries@bbbvan.org and they will investigate.
