Crown and defence agree that man who killed father in Tsawwassen isn’t criminally responsible IAN JACQUES

Justice James Williams has reserved his decision until Aug. 8 on whether Richard Dale Maranda should be found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder in the death of his father. Maranda has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Frederick Dale Maranda, 72, in his
Tsawwassen home on May 18, 2014. The two-day trial concluded Tuesday in New Westminster Supreme Court with verbal and written submissions presented by both Crown counsel and the defence. Crown prosecutor Jennifer Lopes laid out the Crown’s verbal submission while also citing previous case law to provide context for Justice Williams. “Through the filed agreed

“That takes us to the other issue: Is Mr. Maranda not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder? It is our position that Mr.
Maranda has established on a balance of probabilities a lack of criminal responsibility due to a mental disorder.” Lopes recommended the court hold a disposition hearing without delay so Maranda could be detained in a hospital. She said a verdict of not criminally responsible triggers an administrative process to determine whether the accused is a significant safety threat. MORALLY: see Page 3

Changes don’t slow filming
Despite Ladner Village off limits and new rules in place, shoots are up this year IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Despite an anticipated year-long moratorium on filming in Ladner Village due to road work, film crews continue to flock to the area. According to statistics provided by the Corporation of Delta, from Jan. 1 to June 30 of this year, there were 131 days of filming for 45 projects (movies, commercials and TV series). That is up slightly from the same period in 2015 when there were 112 days of filming for 38 projects. Movies shot in and around Delta this year include Frequency, Man in the High Castle and Helsing, while the list of TV series includes Bates Motel, Impastor, Legends of Tomorrow, Supernatural, Zoo and the Prison Break re-boot. Commercial shoots have included spots for Cadillac, Capital One, Folgers and Kijiji. “I think the whole film industry everywhere has seen an increase in activity and we are no different here in Ladner,” said Arvind Sharma, administration and customer services manager with the Corporation of Delta. He said filming has not been negatively affected by making Ladner Village off limits.
PHOTOS BY GORD GOBLE
Impastor, which filmed extensively in Ladner Village last year, was filming a country fair scene recently at Deas Island Regional Park. The TV Land series starring Michael Rosenbaum returns for a second season this fall. The main character steals a man’s identity and ends up posing as the new gay pastor in the fictional town of Ladner, Oregon. “We implemented the moratorium to ensure that we were not creating any additional hardships for the merchants in the area and the shoppers,” he said. “This was a temporary thing for the construction period. The filming industry has received that well. They respect that.” In early 2015, Delta
amended its filming application process after receiving some complaints from local businesses. The amendments included changes to fees and the application process, as well as the creation of a filming coordinator to act as a liaison when crews are filming. Sharma said film pro-
ductions have received the changes to the filming application process well. “They enjoy filming in the quaint little town of Ladner and the surrounding area. They will continue to come back because they receive a good response from the community and the merchants,” he added.
Morally innocent offenders need treatment: Crown CONTINUED from Page 1 “A verdict of not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder thus gives effect to society’s interest in assuring that morally innocent offenders are treated rather than punished while protecting the public as fully as possible,” said Lopes. Should Williams render a decision of not criminally responsible, both Crown and defence will submit applications that the court holds a disposition hearing immediately based on the detailed evidence that has already been presented. Lopes said by holding the disposition hearing the matter still goes to the B.C.
Review Board afterwards, but the difference is the review board must hold a hearing within 90 days, Maranda’s custodial status is taken care of and he is taken to hospital at the earliest opportunity. The other option Williams has is to defer the disposition hearing to the review board itself. In that case the review board has to hold a hearing within 45 days, but by deferring the disposition, Maranda’s custodial issue then must be established by the court, which essentially means more steps will need to be taken and Maranda will not be detained in a hospital in a timely fashion, added Lopes.
Until his Aug. 8 court date, Maranda will remain in custody at the Surrey pre-trial centre. On Monday, the lawyers’ detailed opening submissions were then followed by testimony from a pair of forensic psychiatrists — one appearing for the Crown and one for the defence — who both concluded Maranda has been suffering from a disease of the mind — schizophrenia — for many years. Defence attorney David Crossin told the court his client was diagnosed in 2000 around the age of 30. At that time, he was certified under the Mental Health Act and spent two months hospitalized before being released
under a regime of antipsychotic medications. After that diagnosis in 2000, he functioned relatively well, Crossin said, but in 2003 a serious incident occurred with his father, where Richard launched an unprovoked attack by pouring hot water on him and stabbing him in the neck with a knife. Richard was arrested and charged with assault, but was found not criminally responsible. Crossin said Maranda received treatment for his illness and was released from hospital in 2004. While there was a strain in the relationship, Crossin said Maranda Sr. forgave his client.
According to a report from psychiatrist Dr. Janet Smith, Richard began hearing voices and suffered from bouts of insomnia in the days leading up to the murder, but he didn’t recognize these were signs he was becoming ill again. He also had a notion that his father was going to assault his nieces and nephews. “Killing his father was a direct result of his psychosis,” added Crossin. “His psychosis interfered with his abilities to understand the nature of the act and that it was wrong. Instead of perceiving it as a coldblooded killing of his father, he saw it as saving his nieces from a dangerous man.”

The Corporation of Delta is reminding Pokemon Go players to keep safety in mind. “I love to see the kids getting outside and going to have fun and meeting their friends and new friends … but we’ve got to be smart when we do it,” Mayor Lois Jackson said this week. A municipal news release notes the popular mobile game has caught the attention of people of all ages and that many users are from Delta. The game involves players searching for digital creatures in real life with their phones. The Corporation of Delta and Delta police are encouraging players to “enjoy the augmented reality game, while keeping in mind some strategies to address the realworld risks and dangers that can be associated with” it, the release states.

• July 10, 9:32 p.m., Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal: Complainant reported her son had been
assaulted by another male youth while at the ferry terminal. The two youth had met while at camp together and the victim claimed he was bullied by the other youth at that time. Police spoke to the complainant’s son who claimed the other youth had been poking him in the arm and he had snapped and slapped him in the face and a fight had ensued. Police to follow up with the camp. • July 11, 3:33 p.m., Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal: Report received from a citizen indicating her mother was missing and last seen leaving the terminal driving in another vehicle. The two were to meet in Hope but her mother had not shown up. Police set up an alert with a description of the miss-
ing person. The mother was located without issue, indicating she had become lost while driving to the meeting place. • July 13, 1 a.m., 1900block of 56th Street: Police observed a vehicle stopped in the parking lot of the recreation centre. Police spoke to the driver who indicated he and his passengers were playing a game on their phones. Police smelled an odour of marijuana and found a bong, three grinders and three bags of marijuana buds in the vehicle. All parties released at the scene; drug items seized.

No suspects or witnesses. • July 12, 4:11 p.m., 4900-block of McNeely Way: During a routine traffic stop police noticed a marijuana pipe in plain view. The suspect was arrested under the Controlled Substance and Drug Act and held while the vehicle was searched. The search revealed a small amount of marijuana and another pipe. The drugs and pipes seized and the suspect released. • July 14, 12:53 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police were advised that a female left
the store with a full basket of unpaid groceries and drove away in a grey vehicle. Police obtained images of the suspect from video surveillance and attended her residence. The suspect was initially uncooperative and then admitted to the theft. The store declined to pursue charges and the suspect apologized and paid $40 for the stolen items. • July 14, 1:50 p.m., 9600-block of Highway 99: A traffic stop was initiated after police observed a vehicle travelling at 140 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Investigation found the driver had a driving prohibition and had surrendered his driver’s license. The suspect could not produce vehicle insurance or transfer papers and indicated he had just recently
purchased the vehicle in the United States. The suspect was issued tickets for speeding and no vehicle license. The vehicle was impounded and the suspect was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. • July 17, 10:49 a.m., 8300-block of River Road: An unmarked police vehicle was stopped behind a motorcycle at a stop light. When the light turned green, the suspect’s vehicle accelerated at a fast rate and continued to change lanes without signaling. The police paced the motorcycle, which was travelling at a speed of 131 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. The driver was issued a violation ticket for excessive speed and his motorcycle was impounded for seven days.

landfill,” Shamess said in an email response to the Optimist. “The fee structure is set up to provide a fee discount for material delivered in what are considered off peak hours — before 10 a.m. and after 2 p.m. During peak arrival times due to large volumes of trucks arriving on site, waits can be very long for residents, so the discount in off peak hours is to provide an incentive to encourage those with small loads and small vehicles to come in before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m.” He said the fact there was not a large line up during the time that Bruchet was there was luck of the draw. “Traffic does ebb and flow, so there is always a chance that someone arrives between rushes,” he added. “It is not uncommon to have wait times of half hour or longer during traffic peaks between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The fee structure is advertised on our website and on the signs at the landfill gate.”

Do they [City of Vancouver] want to go green or do they want to collect money?” Bruchet asked. “If I go again, and I might because I have another chair I want to get rid of, I will be sure to now go after 2 p.m.” Albert Shamess, director of waste management and resource recovery for the City of Vancouver, said the fee structure has been in place for a number of years and is consistent across all transfer stations and facilities in Metro Vancouver. “This is the first complaint of this nature that we have received at the

Don Bruchet is upset about his costly trip to the Vancouver Landfill recently. Bruchet, a 23-year South Delta resident who recently moved to Richmond, had a living room chair he wanted to dispose of and originally wanted to drop it off at a transfer station, which is closer to his new home. He found out the station would not take the chair, so he prepared for the trek out to Delta. He arrived at 10:38 a.m. on a Wednesday and drove right through to the weigh scale. “The lady in the booth asked me what I was bringing in and I told her it was a singular living room chair and I actually rolled down my window to let her see the item,” he recalled. “That’s when she told me due to the high volume time frame that I had arrived in it would be $25, but if I came back after 2 p.m. it would only by $15. “I found that ridiculous, but I was not prepared to come back, so I drove in and got directions to what bin to go to. I backed in, took my chair out and threw it in the dumpster and then started to make my way out.” Bruchet said there were only two other cars in line and he noticed several staff members who looked like they were “looking for something to do.” “This is what they called being busy is I guess,” Bruchet said. “I asked again before I left is there anything they could do because I’ve been here only five minutes. he Tsawwassen First Nation has been forced to finally show its cards. There have been rumours around these parts for years that the TFN was going to get into the casino business. Whether it’s because gaming companies have made overtures, or that a hotel is included in the TFN’s land use plan or perhaps because of the link between First Nations and gaming — although that seems more of an American thing — talk that a casino would eventually be on its way persisted. Whenever we’d ask about that possibility, TFN representatives would offer denials that had just enough wiggle room you were left thinking the issue wasn’t completely dead. However, with major industrial and housing developments on the go, as well as an enormous shopping complex set to open this fall, it was clear the little First Nation on the shores of the Salish Sea had a lot on its plate. If a casino was somewhere on its list of potential projects, it clearly wasn’t at the top. Then the B.C. Lottery Corporation came along to force the issue. After spying a map of the Lower Mainland and determining the area south of the Fraser River was underserved gamingwise, the lottery corporation asked local governments if they’d be interested in playing host to a casino. The time for being coy was over. To use the poker vernacular, it had reached a point where the TFN had to either call or fold, and it called, meaning BCLC will now have to decide whether a casino is best situated on the First Nation’s land or at the Corporation of Delta’s preferred — Or should that be only? — site, the Delta Town & Country Inn. Given they’re all of about 10 kilometres apart and will draw from essentially the same customer pool, and the fact the lottery corporation determines the scope of any facility, there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot to choose from between the two submissions, but BCLC’s evaluation team will ultimately have to pick one over the other. This promises to be a significant decision as the winner, provided it also receives the support of the public/ members, will be issued a licence to print money while the loser will find itself on the outside looking in for a very long time.
Ann Claggett left a legacy of community service in Delta
D
elta has more than its share of good citizens, and the name Ann Claggett (19422015) certainly fits
on that list. A large gathering of family and friends have celebrated Ann’s life and her many years of community service. Ann and her three sisters lived in West Vancouver with parents of Scottish heritage. The family left city life behind for country living, settling in Clinton, B.C. to operate a dairy farm. Graduating from Clinton High School in 1960, Ann found employment in banking in Clinton, Nakusp and Revelstoke. Along the way she met and married a transplanted Prairie boy by the name of Ed Claggett. Ann and Ed and their three children moved to Delta in 1970 and to Tsawwassen in 1976. Busy raising their children, Ann found time to open a successful catering business with friend Moira Duchek. Ann’s first foray into community service was with Delta’s parks and recreation commission over a 10-year period. Ann thereafter volunteered her services to Expo 86 and was responsible for all the street entertainment as Vancouver played host to the world. While exhibiting considerable leadership skills, Ann was never afraid of hard work and

tirelessly immersed herself in her projects, nor was she one to seek recognition or self promotion. As the saying goes, busy people just get busier and Ann accepted responsibility for the opening and closing ceremonies when Delta hosted the B.C. Summer Games in 1986. This was my first opportunity to observe this person organizing thousands of athletes and entertainment for three venues, all successfully completed. With the exposure from these events and Ann’s interest in the community, she was encouraged to consider a seat on Delta council. Ann was elected in 1987, 1990 and again in 1996, all during Delta’s tumultuous public land use hearings. Ann’s work ethic turned a parttime alderman’s role into a fulltime job as she became deeply involved in community issues.
After her elected service she again turned her attention to volunteer community services. Ann was chair of Delta Hospital’s board before the provincial government re-organized and regionalized health care and hospital services. Ann along with others founded the successful Elder College still in operation today. I recall Ann’s interest in promoting local healthy slough issues, which were affected by contamination and bank sloughing. The sloughs have historical significance as the original transportation system of early Delta. Ann’s community service was freely given while raising a family and organizing an active home life. Ed’s family has deep Prairie roots and has a rodeo history. The Claggetts were regular attendees as special guests at the Calgary Stampede in recognition of Ed’s father’s Canadian championship in 1963 in the featured chuckwagon races. A well travelled and successful couple with an interest in horses, the Calgary trip was the highlight of their summer activity. Ann’s life was well lived and a worthy life for all to emulate. And a good night to you, Kim, David and Lynsey. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Ability far more important than gender for politicians
Editor: Re: Gender equality not an issue in Delta, July 15 I had no idea the rest of Canada “struggles to achieve a gender balance in political circles” until I read the Optimist’s brave expose. To think that I once believed that one’s competence counted more than one’s genitalia. Now that I’m down with the struggle, it’s good to know that “Delta has no such concerns.” Call me an angry, mid-
dle-aged, white male if you will (as that’s what I am), but I don’t give a rat’s arse about the gender of our elected politicians. The left, obsessed as it is with identity politics, won’t be content until our so-called leaders are appointed not by our democratic will, but by their demented delusions of social justice (astute readers will, of course, note the logical flaw in this reasoning: the left will never be “content”). I don’t care if my elected
representatives wear pants or skirts, or are undecided upon entering public washrooms, I only want them not to be profligate fools in spending my tax money. I want them to be more concerned with the budget balance than the washroom balance. And I don’t want “gender equality” to be an “issue” in Delta because it’s just another bogus social crisis concocted by the loony left. Gary McGregor

Making the tunnel brighter would reduce crashes, letter writer contends. protrusions throughout the entire length. Just preventing two or three incidents in rush hour would save enough in lost man-hours to fund it. There may be some technical reason this can’t be done, but there may
also be political pressure to ensure it remains as an unpleasant experience as possible. It will not allow the super carriers of raw resources to pass and perhaps that is a good thing. M. Ross
Many Deltans step up to donate blood Editor: On behalf of Canadian Blood Services and our territory manager, Cherise Louie, I would like to thank Ladner/Delta residents who support Canadian patients by giving blood. In late April, we announced the need for 200,000 blood donations by July. Thousands of eligible donors answered the call for support and helped us collect more than 193,000 donations.

Editor: Where does it say a tunnel must be dark, dank and dismal? Plunging from a brilliant summer highnoon into a black hole takes the uninitiated by surprise… the first reaction is to slam on the brakes and tear off the sunglasses. This must cause some problems. Why does it have to be so dark? I drove through a couple of times taking note of the walls and ceiling. Why not coat the ceiling with an off-white finish tinted with cyan to offset the dirty yellow pallor cast by the low-pressure sodium vapour lamps? There are no overhead

Don’t overlook Delta North MLA Editor: Re: Gender equality not an issue in Delta, July 15 I appreciate the Optimist has noticed we have a lot of strong female politicians that get elected in Delta, but a little geography lesson is needed. Delta is comprised of three communities: Ladner, Tsawwassen (collectively known as
South Delta) and North Delta. Delta has two provincial constituencies: Delta South, held by Vicki Huntington, and Delta North, held by Scott Hamilton. So to be factually correct, the second paragraph of the story should say three out of four of the top positions in Delta are held by women. Lori Mayhew

FOOT CARE
Girly American Staffordshire Terrier Cross, White with Brown, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 7 years old)
Poor sweet Girly was left at a boarding facility after her owner fell ill. She was there for a little over 3 months and started to deteriorate. Now that she is here she is starting to turn over a new leaf! Girly is very sweet tempered and aims to please. You can see that she has not had a lot of positive interaction with neither humans nor dogs in a while and can come across as standoffish at first. She needs an adult only, experienced family who is willing to remind her how amazing humans are with gentle and consistent handling. We also believe her fear of other dogs will subside by introducing her to lots of good, gentle dogs and build her confidence back up. She does not have aggression towards other dogs but may be reactive if provoked or behind a fence. Please chat with staff for more information.

MK Delta Lands is looking to rezone a 62-hectare (155-acre) piece of property adjacent to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area for industrial uses. About 45 hectares (112 acres) would have industrial buildings and an overpass would be built. The property is zoned industrial but currently still within the Agricultural Land Reserve. MK Delta Lands, which is offering several million dollars to Delta for amenities and agricultural irrigation improvements, notes the site is ideally located for logistics or distribution centres. The proposal also includes transferring all the company’s other land holdings in the area, which total 132.7 hectares (328 acres), to the Corporation of Delta for conservation, including land east of Highway 91 where the company had originally sought to build housing. lobbying against the proposal, saying the project is dangerous to the natural bog’s environment. The society has gathered an online petition with around 2,000 names. Others opposed include environmentalists such as Susan Jones, who wrote to council saying, “As bogs are such delicate and fragile ecosystems, unprotected Burns Bog properties need to be added to the protected Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area to ensure the long term viability of the bog.” Anne Murray wrote, “The protection of most of Burns Bog was a major achievement of Delta council — do not now let this vital habitat be whittled away by the effects of development in the lagg (edge zone), an area known to be of very high

importance for both the overall function of the bog and for the survival of specific small mammals and other species.” David Ryall, president of the Delta Farmers’ Institute, wrote in favour of the development, noting it would be an opportunity to make further sizable financial investment that will make drainage and irrigation improvements for Westham Island. Some of the works for Westham Island the DFI wants to see done include new pumps for getting rid of salt laden ditch water as well as a pipe to connect Westham Island to the Delta irrigation system. However, the DFI also wants to see a large tract of land at Highway 91 at 72nd Avenue, which MK Delta Lands would give to Delta, added to the ALR.

MK Delta Lands says its proposed industrial development next to the Burns Bog protected zone won’t create a fire hazard to the bog. In a statement issued earlier this month, the company noted it’s taking a responsible approach to wildfire prevention, having worked extensively with recognized bog specialists to ensure that development of the site is not going to negatively affect the surrounding water level. The company says the drainage design will increase and improve water levels during the driest part of the year, while maintaining surface waters throughout the year. The company is offering those assurances following this month’s major wildfire in Burns Bog.
Delta officials said bog fires have the potential to grow quickly and become difficult to manage, but MK Delta Lands noted they are a natural part of the unique ecosystem and occur periodically. “We are developing a comprehensive plan for fire management for the MK Delta Lands Group property. For example, we have consulted with Delta Fire and Emergency Services to design maintenance access roads along the perimeter of the property with access points at the property margins for emergency vehicles, if they should ever need such access,” the company explained. “The design also includes controllable weirs at key locations in and around the site that could be used to potentially adjust water levels to lower wildfire danger rat-

ings. The perimeter berm and drainage ditch will remain wetted throughout the year, and we will manage vegetation growth and development so that fuel loads do not become large. We designed the perimeter buffer to be consistent with the surrounding environment.” The company adds the goal is to amend the effects of peat harvesting by improving summer water levels. The company wants to build 2.2 million square feet of industrial space on a 62-hectare (155-acre) parcel located adjacent to the Highway 91 Connector (Nordel Way) and the South Fraser Perimeter Road, located adjacent to the protected conservancy area. A public hearing on the application will take place on Tuesday, July 26 in North Delta.

Just snap photo to take part in national Bumble Bee Count
Friends of the Earth Canada is calling on residents of Delta to join the Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count and help scientists learn more about these important pollinators. All it takes is a simple snap of a photo of bumble bees you see in your garden, park or campsite and upload it to Bumblebeewatch.org. The Canadian member of Friends of the Earth International, one of the world’s largest grassroots environmental organizations, is partnering with Bumble Bee Watch to deliver the first-ever Great Canadian Bumble Bee Count. Bumble Bee Watch, created by scientists from the Xerces Society, York
University and Wildlife Preservation Canada, is an ambitious citizen-science project that asks people to take photos of bumble bees when they see them, note their location and upload them online, where they will be verified by a team of researchers. The count runs until Aug. 15. Bumble bees are effective pollinators for many of the crops we eat and for many of the wildflowers in our fields and forests, but several of their species are dramatically declining. Though there are over 40 confirmed species of bumble bees in Canada, they have little proper monitoring. Anyone can help protect these bees by participating in the count.

But if you read the gospel stories, it’s clear whenever we draw a line, we will inevitably find Jesus on the other side. Friends, we can make a difference. When we smile at a stranger we acknowledge our common humanity and become peacemakers. Every time we offer a smile to both neighbours and strangers, every time we say hello and ask how someone is doing, we are stitching the frayed fabric of our world back together again.

In a week that saw the Nice attack, more police shootings in Baton Rouge and the fallout from the failed coup in Turkey rip the fabric of our world apart yet again, I was more than a little discouraged and ready for some good news. I found it right here in our community when I opened the pages of Wednesday’s edition of this paper and was delighted to read about the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen’s soccer tournament for 180 temporary foreign workers from Guatemala and Mexico who work in our local greenhouses. The organizers wanted to reach out to these men who have left families back home and send a

Divas paddle toward health
Those who cross Deas Slough on the way to the George Massey Tunnel might see a dragon boat travelling underneath it full of pink ladies. The Abreast Deas Divas is one of six dragon boat teams that make up the Abreast In A Boat organization centered in the Lower Mainland. All members have had breast cancer and have decided to do something to keep healthy, help with the
physical and mental issues of breast cancer, and have a great time in the process. Abreast in a Boat started 21 years ago in Vancouver when a group of breast cancer survivors started to paddle a dragon boat to help with their recuperation. It has proved a successful way to help with the physical and mental challenges of breast cancer after the operations and treatment are over. Any women who have
had breast cancer and want to challenge themselves while having lots of fun and meeting a boatload of new friends are encouraged to try dragon boating. The Abreast Deas Divas practice twice a week from March to July. To sign up for next year, go to www.abreastinaboat.com or look for team members at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival on Aug. 1 and the Ladner Village Market on Aug. 28.

heroic outlaw’s adventures will play out at the Earthwise Society’s garden in Boundary Bay this weekend. The Ballad of Robin Hood marks the debut for Acne Prone Productions, a new youth theatre company founded by Rachel Garrett, Sophia Merritt and Cassidy Johnston. Shows take place today, tomorrow and Sunday. Merritt says audience members can expect “a whole lot of fun.” Garrett echoes that sentiment. “The cool thing about the show is that it’s aimed at kids but it’s fun for everybody,” she says. “It’s an interactive theatre experience instead of just staring at a stage for two hours. The kids get to follow Robin Hood around the garden and go between

the scenes.” Johnston adds there are a lot of jokes for kids along with gags and pratfalls but also a few winks and nods to the adults. “The kind of humour is like Mel Brooks meets pantomime meets … [a] Disney/Pixar movie,” she explains. There is also some action, including fight scenes, and music in the play. “I think the music punctuates all of the emotion really nicely. It keeps everything at a really light note,” Johnston says.
Overall the production is shaping up very well, the founders conveyed in an interview earlier this week. “We’ve been very fortunate in that the crew’s been really willing to work and dig into it,” says Johnston. The production has also received generous support from the community, for which the founders are thankful. “I’m always astounded by how generous people are,” Johnston says. Aaron Moy, who plays Prince John, says the script is very well written. “It’s really astounding what they managed to whip up in such a short time. The script is really entertaining and I’m pretty sure anyone who comes to the show is going to like it,” he says. The Ballad of Robin Hood runs rain or shine until Sunday at Earthwise, 6400-3rd Ave., Tsawwassen. Show times are 7 p.m. today, tomor-

So, what I am about to divulge in today’s column is not because I don’t think we need physiotherapists, or that I don’t like them. Instead, it’s because I think we should save our visits to them for really good injuries. I’m talking about the complex and the challenging, the problems and hurts that will get your physio all jacked up. They deserve it. They have studied, they have trained, they are ready. But, we don’t, do we? I am the first to admit
that it’s usually my own stupidity that sends me to my physio. A lot of us head to a physio because we are simply unbalanced (I’m talking physically here, not mentally), with muscles as tight as piano strings and joints as mobile as rocks. We also tend to err on the side of bad posture, with a majority of us spending too much time sitting behind desks, computers, steering wheels and other devices feeding into that bad posture even more. In other words, we are our own worst enemy. It doesn’t have to be this way, though. There are things we can do as preemptive strikes, what is termed as pre-habilitation exercises in the industry. To help me choose the best exercises to keep you out of a physiotherapist’s office, I recruited a physio known by many in Delta simply as Travis. He is like the Cher of physiotherapy. Only one name is required. Travis Wolsey is the owner of Sungod Physiotherapy with
locations in North Delta, Ladner and now Tsawwassen Springs. He is a physiotherapist who works with our Vancouver Giants, as well as many other athletes in many sports. Below are four moves he would love to see you implement into your weekly routine to help keep your muscles and body healthy and happy:
nerve. Wolsey claims nerve tissue is most forgotten part in fitness (I will concur. I have never had anyone hire me for some “toned nerves so they look good in their skinny jeans”). Decreased nerve mobility is common and leads to pain, discomfort and tightness. Try adding this move after your workouts.
Glute med strength. Neurodynamic leg raise Neurodynamic leg raise. Don’t let the big name scare you away. Basically this is like a hamstring stretch, however, instead of pulling your leg straight towards you, guide it across the midline of the body — towards the opposite shoulder. This move is to mobilize the sciatic
Glute med strength. Butt-ology 101 states that if you want a strong core and healthy knees, you need to strengthen the muscles in the side of your hips, your gluteus medius. There are many injuries for which a weak, or misfiring, glute med is responsible. These include IT band syndrome, patellofemoral pain syndrome
BC & ALBERTA GUIDE DOGS
LADNER, BC
and Achilles tendinopathy, to name just a few. When performing the side leg lift and clam exercise, I recommend you do them against a wall with your head, shoulders, hips and heels pressing against it. This will help you maintain proper form so you really fire your glute med up. In addition, lead with your heel and not your toe. Aim for 15 to 20 reps on each side, for two to four sets.
Upper cervical flexion. Upper cervical flexion. This is for all you Pokemon Go people and everyone else who looks down at a cell phone. When we look at things like a phone, computer or tablet, we tend to jut our chins forward. Continue to do this and we run the high risk of developing what they call forward head syndrome.
This is bad news for the neck and discs of the cervical spine. In addition, this type of posture can trigger headaches and develop pain, numbness or weakness radiating down your shoulder, arms and hand. To offset a forward head posture, stand against a wall and draw your chin in and hold. If you feel like you have a double chin, you are doing it correctly. Try this move many times throughout the day, especially if you are chained to a desk. Move your butt. The final pre-hab exercise Wolsey recommends is for all of us to move more. Go hiking, biking, walking, swimming, lift weights, do yoga. Do a variety of activities that will work and challenge different muscles. Tumbling down the Thompson River JANE CASSIE
Optimist contributor
My husband, Brent, is one of those domestic guys. Without being nagged, he’ll do the vacuuming, cooking and even the laundry. So on this adventure, when we get agitated by the washboard spin, churned up in the garburator and spewed out of the roiling cauldron, he manages to keep his cool. It’s the Terminator that finally gets his vocal chords going. Not a surprise — he’s a bit of a wuss when it comes to thrillers. We’re just south of Lytton, tumbling down the Thompson River on a Kumsheen river raft. And to me all 25 of the roller coaster rapids are screamers. “Hang on tight, team,” Simon yells over the thunderous roar of flow, “and let’s take on this big boy!” Our Australian guide has more vigor than Crocodile Dundee, and we feel like his trainees when powering through the mammoth wall of
water known appropriately as The Shocker. Gasps escape all 12 of our gaping mouths, and in spite of our protective yellow slickers, we’re soon wetter than a dozen sailors. “It’s time to shift,” we’re told, after resurfacing to calmer swirls. With a mischievous grin, Simon circles the swirling vortex until we’re, once again, at its electrifying start gate. And after shuffling forwards, we have two new brave hearts at the bow. This procession of rotating to the front dunk-tank seats occurs throughout the day and while hugging tight to white-tipped torrents, we catapult waves like a pack of pole vaulters. Even when confronted with the wettest and wildest, our leader’s knowledge and competency instills total confidence. His certified expertise is a universal standard that Kumsheen Rafting Resort ensures, and that’s why, since 1973, it’s enticed thousands to hop on board. The resort’s home base is scenically terraced

A team of brave paddlers tackles the Thompson River on a Kumsheen river raft. above the raging torrents, just six kilometres east of Lytton. Ponderosa pines and sun-bleached sage embrace the property’s quaint canvas cabins that overlook the limestone cliffs of White Canyon. Each one is decked out
with memorabilia depicting their titles, such as Gold Miners Shanty, Pit House and The Last Spike. On the previous night, we had slept in the Chinese Cabin, and were intrigued with its heirloom treasures and historical tales.
Meandering trails lead from these humble abodes to other playful pastimes — pool, hot tub, volleyball and basketball courts. And waiting beyond are the buoyant rafts that take riders, ranging in age from eight to 80, on a tumbling trip down the Thompson. After getting up close and personal with The Shocker and other heartthumping rapids like the Tunnels of Love, we pull into Nicomen Falls for a bite of lunch and bit of river reprieve. Back on the water, the ride is literally a breeze, and while drifting languidly through gentle swirls, the sun provides a warm embrace. We brush up to steep-sided canyons where grand monoliths and weather riveted hoodoos hover over us like watchful sentinels. We pass by snaking railcars that trace the footsteps of time as they cleave their way through granitegouged tunnels. And we ogle over the kaleidoscope of wildlife that includes eagles, mule deer and nimble big horn sheep.
The canyon vistas are jaw-dropping and spectators along the highway also stop to take in the beauty. They seem intrigued as they watch us roll with the relaxing river. Maybe it’s because, from their position, they can see what’s coming up. While following our leader’s command, we encounter roller coaster rapids that buck us like a mechanical bull. We’re gobbled up by the Jaws of Death, sucked into the Green Hole vortex and blended in the Witches Cauldron. Throughout the day our adrenaline flows faster than the river and our heart rates escalate with every surge. And when it comes to the Terminator, well, you already know Brent’s response. And my vocal chords get another workout too. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. Ontario star shining for Islanders Islanders and Salmonbellies split opening games of BCJALL semi-final series MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Kevin Orleman will be doing his part to ensure he isn’t going home until late August. The 20-year-old goaltender is trying to help the Delta Islanders get to where they have never gone before after being acquired earlier this month from Kitchener-Waterloo of the Ontario Junior “A” Lacrosse League. “My plan is to be here for a while,” he smiled. “I didn’t come all the way out here for just one series. I’m here for the long haul.” Orleman has been outstanding so far as the Islanders and New West Salmonbellies are tied at 1-1 in their best-of-seven series that will determine a berth into the Minto Cup national championships that start Aug. 19. Delta produced a 12-7 game one home floor victory on Sunday and the Salmonbellies answered two nights later at Queen’s Park Arena with a 9-6 win. Game three is slated for Saturday (6 p.m.) at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The margin of game two would have been much greater without Orleman’s heroics. He made 49 saves, including several of the spectacular variety to keep his team within shouting distance. The game slipped away when the visitors went scoreless for over 34 minutes — allowing New West to build up a 9-4 lead after two periods. “They were not going to roll over and die after one game and we knew that,” said Orleman. “That is a great team over there.

Kevin Orleman has been up to the challenge of backstopping the Delta Islanders to their first-ever Minto Cup berth with two superb playoff performances so far. We just didn’t answer when they were on us from that start of the game. You could see that. They wanted it more tonight than we did. “It’s a best of seven series that is now a best of five. We just have to come out flying the next game.” Orelman needs no introduction to the Salmonbellies. He played for New West last summer
when his rights were also sold to the BCJALL team. It could very well happen again in 2017 since he has another year of junior eligibility and is considered one of the best goalies in the country. “Honestly, when I came out to B.C. last summer I kind of fell in love with it,” said the University of Guelph student who is currently billeting in the White Rock area. I had a great time last year
and wanted to be back here but also wanted my team at home to obviously do well too. “When things weren’t going that way, I wanted to come back here and win. I was only hearing things coming from my GM and didn’t know where I was going to end up. We have a chance to do something special (for the Islanders franchise) and you can feel that in the dressing room.”
Pioneers advance to face Nanaimo in WCSLA semis
Ladner Pioneers will head north on their Vancouver Island playoff adventure after sweeping Victoria in a best-of-three quarterfinal series. The Pioneers advanced to the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association semi-finals following an 8-7 win in the provincial capital on Sunday night. Ladner
will now face the Nanaimo Timbermen in a best-of-five affair starting Friday on the Island. The teams will also be in Ladner on Sunday at 5 p.m. for game two. Sam Clare’s second goal of the game in the early stages of the third period provided the difference. Quinn Waddington scored twice, while Ryan Keith had a
goal and five assists. Colton Dow, Mike Berekoff and Cam Summers rounded out the scoring. Rob Cook made 37 saves for the win. The Pioneers had opened the series one night earlier with a 10-7 home floor win. Nate Clare had six points, including a pair of goals. His younger brother Sam added

two goals and three assists. Tyler Nett and Berekoff each scored twice. The Timbermen and Pioneers finished regular season play with identical 9-4-1 records. Nanaimo earned home floor advantage thanks to winning both headto-head meetings, including 9-8 home floor triumph on July 7.

SAWATZKY, John Gerhard October 12, 1927 - July 12, 2016 .
It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce that John Sawatzky went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 12, at the age of 89 while in residence at the White Rock Seniors Village. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Agnes, of 65 years, his three children, Sharon (Hagel), Robert (former wife, Shelley Kenney), and Lawrence (Lori), as well as eight grandchildren (Sonny, Shayn, Kimberly, Melissa, Emily (David), and Kai, Piper and Tate) as well as three great-grandchildren (Dustin, Kailyn and Brayden). The family will greatly miss his twinkling blue eyes, his warm, child-like smiles and his generous, heartfelt hugs. John was born in Manitoba and moved to Vancouver in his early twenties, where he met and married Agnes. A plumber by trade, he was also a jack-of-all trades, even building one of his own homes. He enjoyed many hobbies, but his favorite was woodworking. He also started his own Plumbing company in Ladner. A few months later, his son Lawrence joined the company, and continued to work as a partner with John for many years, and continues to operate the company to this day. Once retired, John and Agnes enjoyed touring in their RV and spending quality time with their grandchildren. In his later years, John turned to his passion of woodworking. From making furniture to candleholders, to being the apartment building maintenance handyman until he was 80, John kept himself quite busy. The family would like to thank the staff at the White Rock Seniors Village for their warmth and kindness that they have given John and Agnes over the past 4 months in resident care. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 6th, at Cedar Park Church at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the MCC or to Cedar Park Church in Delta.
