Sun Festival weekend in Tsawwassen
Above the crowd!
The Delta Islanders failed to clinch a berth in the Minto Cup after a 15-13 home floor loss to the New Westminster Salmonbellies Wednesday, but they still lead the B.C. Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse League semi-final series 3-2. See story on Page 20.
The 44th edition of the Tsawwassen Sun Festival gets going tomorrow and continues throughout the B.C. Day long weekend. The summer staple will feature a host of activities, highlighted by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen Parade, which will make its way along 56th Street Monday morning. Other favourites include the Kids Fun Zone, stage entertainment, car show, antique fair, slo-pitch and volleyball tournaments, marketplace and skateboard competition. A Drive-In Movie Night is a new addition to this year’s fair and takes place at Beach Grove Elementary on Sunday. The scifi classic Back to the Future will be shown. • For more on the Sun Fest, see pages 4 and 15.
Council OKs plan for Burns Bog Industrial park gets municipal approval in return for remainder of MK Delta Lands’ holdings SANDOR GYARMATI

A plan to build a largescale industrial park adjacent to the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area moved another step closer to reality after Delta council granted the
application conditional approval Tuesday. Following a public hearing at the North Delta Recreation Centre that had roughly 150 in attendance, but only a couple dozen speakers, council unanimously gave third reading to the application by MK Delta Lands,

agreeing the trade-off is worth saving bog lands still in private hands. “This is a real red letter day,” said Mayor Lois Jackson, her voice cracking with emotion as she described the effort spanning decades to save the bog from development.
Coun. Heather King noted that while it’s not a perfect solution, it’s a reasonable one for the protection of Burns Bog. Similar comments were conveyed by her colleagues, including Coun. Robert Campbell, who described the plan as “a huge net benefit for the Lower
Mainland and citizens of Delta.” Coun. Bruce McDonald said Delta doesn’t have the means to purchase the remaining properties outside the designated conservancy area, so the only way to preserve most of it was to allow some development. PLAN: see Page 3

Syrian family off to Ontario
Al Mohammads moving to Scarborough to be closer to relocated family IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
One of three Syrian refugee families that settled in Ladner earlier this year is moving to Scarborough, Ont. in the hopes of creating an even better life. Rev. Jim Short, co-chair of Delta Safe Haven, the local group formed to support the refugees, reported this week that Mohammad and Nour Al Mohammad and their four children are on the move to join with other family. “An apartment has come vacant in the same building and a job has been
offered to Mohammad,” said Short. “He will be working alongside Nour’s nephew-in-law, who he has worked with before coming to Canada. They have been told they are in a good neighbourhood with lots of people from their homeland and with stores that cater more to the comforts of life they are used to.” A send-off for the family was held on Monday night at Ladner United Church. “Delta Safe Haven is confident in this family that they have made a good and careful choice for their lives and we have
experienced the joy in Nour’s smile as she anticipates being reunited with her family members that she has lived with all her life,” Jim Short said Short. As for the two remaining families, he said thanks to the support of the community, they are integrating well. Mansour and Ensaf Al Nuaimi and their five children settled in Ladner in January, while Muhanad Azizi and his wife Nariman arrived at the end of
February. Learning English was a challenge as many of them only had basic language skills, but several of the adults travel downtown five days a week to a private English college and their language skills are improving every day. As for the children, Short said they all enjoyed their time attending school in Delta, meeting new friends and learning the language. They have been attending further English language classes this sum-
mer to prepare them for a new school year. He said weekly meetings between the families and volunteers cover a variety of subjects, everything from the best places to shop and learning to budget on their limited government support to resume preparation and connecting them with others in the community. “In the end, it’s not just money or items or programs that help newcomers feel at home — it is relationships and friendships. There is a lot of that precious commodity in Delta.”
Plan calls for 2.2 million square feet of industrial space CONTINUED from Page 1 The proposal calls for 2.2 million square feet of industrial space on a 62-hectare (155-acre) parcel near the junction of Highway 91 Connector (Nordel Way) and South Fraser Perimeter Road. MK Delta Lands, which is offering several million dollars to Delta for amenities and agricultural irrigation improvements for Westham Island, notes the site is ideally located for logistics or distribution centres. The proposal also includes transferring all the company’s other land holdings, which total 132.7 hectares (328 acres), to the Corporation of Delta for conservation, including land east of Highway 91 where the company had originally sought to build housing.
The property where the company wants to build is zoned industrial but is within the Agricultural Land Reserve, so requires an exclusion from the province. During the hearing, company president Joanne Barnett, accompanied by a wetland ecologist and other specialists, noted the bog’s hydrology and potential environmental impacts were carefully assessed. Council was told a management plan will improve the water quality as well as reduce the wildfire risk in the bog. “In our proposed development application, for every one acre that is proposed for development, three acres are proposed for protection from future development,” Barnett added. The speakers were fairly

pressure to develop farmland near the port. The Burns Bog Conservation Society’s Eliza Olson urged council to base its decision on the

best science available and reject the proposal, also telling Jackson not to hurt her legacy. Environmentalist Don DeMill said industrial areas should be intensified and not spread out. Others said developing “at the heart of the bog” is unacceptable, while some speakers said the company’s plan was well researched and thoughtful. Several members of the Delta Farmers’ Institute described the agricultural assessment of the property as weak and also wanted assurance a parcel to be given to Delta and added to the ALR would be available for farming. The application still requires other approvals, including from the Agricultural Land Commission.

Former Tsawwassen First Nation chief Kim Baird will be one of 16 recipients of the Order of British Columbia, the province announced Tuesday. Recognized for her role in the TFN signing its historic urban treaty, Baird was selected for the prestigious recognition from among 200 nominations forwarded to the province this year. She was first elected to the TFN government in 1993 in her early 20s and was elected chief for six terms, from 1999 to 2012. During that period she was a key figure in reaching a treaty, which took effect in 2009 and gave the First Nation additional land and, more importantly, the power to govern. “I’m humbled and honoured to be chosen among

nine years, including the effective day of it and getting our institutions off the ground and the start of our economic development, now you can see the physical realization of all of it.” Current TFN Chief Bryce Williams congratulated Baird, noting her role in where the TFN stands today. “Kim was instrumental in securing a mod-
ern urban treaty for our nation,” said Williams. “I thank her, on behalf of executive council and the community, for her dedication to our nation’s future.” Baird is also a member of the Order of Canada, an honour she received for her leadership in negotiating and implementing the first modern treaty in B.C. The TFN is now poised to become an economic powerhouse in Greater Vancouver with a number of major residential and industrial developments underway, as well as a massive shopping complex to open later this year. This year’s recipients join a list of 402 British Columbians previously appointed. Baird, who has three daughters, has been keeping busy with consulting work, including for First Nations. She also serves on various boards.

Pro plays 18 rounds in a single day Cory Rudston-Brown completes 325 holes at Beach Grove to benefit ALS Society of B.C. IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
He started at 4 a.m. with a seven-iron and a flashlight — and by 9:30 p.m. Cory Rudston-Brown had completed a whopping 325 holes of golf in support of the ALS Society of B.C. The Beach Grove Golf Club assistant professional was one of 100-plus pros from 33 B.C. courses that took part in the 11th annual PGA of B.C. Golfathon for ALS last Tuesday. Rudston-Brown, who has worked at Beach Grove for 23 years, has taken part in the golfathon for nine years. Last year he completed 305 holes and this year he wanted to raise the bar even higher. “My grandfather passed away nine years ago from ALS,” Rudston-Brown said, explaining why he continues to support the cause. “A couple of beloved members passed away a few years ago and some more even recently. Every time I think someone else can take this challenge on, it kind of knocks on the
door again.” Throughout his marathon golf day, RudstonBrown only took two breaks to shower and change clothes, eating and drinking whatever he could along the way. “It was 18 full rounds and an extra hole. If I stopped for any length of time, I never could have done that number,” he said. “I do the first probably six, seven hours on my own because I pick a day that I can sort of work around the course myself. Then at about 11 a.m., I had two or three members show up and they were pretty much with me until 9:30 p.m. They were awesome for me, raking bunkers, fixing ball marks, grabbing whatever I needed when I needed it. Without them I couldn’t do it. Going out there by myself for 20 hours just in my own head, I would have ended up in a straight jacket by the end of the day.” He said there were little moments during the day that helped him push
There are so many points throughout the day where I was counting down and each time you get a little burst of energy to keep you pushing. “Then I would go by one member’s house and he’s got a freshly made burger off the grill for me and another guy would pass me a beer over the fence — it’s pretty cool. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects a person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere. Typically the person is immobilized within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. There is no known cause or cure yet. Proceeds from the Golfathon for ALS provide crucial support services to ALS patients and their families, friends and caregivers. “On average the golf professionals complete about 150 holes, so what Cory does here is extraordinary,” said Wendy Toyer, executive director of the ALS Society of B.C. “I give a lot of credit to the PGA of B.C. to encourage their members to be a part of this event. No one has to do this — they choose to do this.”

Decade of weird and wacky Best of Crime Beat looks back at some of the more unusual occurrences
South Delta Crime Beat The weekly Crime Beat is taking a two-week hiatus due to vacations at the Delta Police Department, so the Optimist, thanks to a suggestion by reader Megan Kureluk, has compiled the Best of Crime Beat during its absence. We take a look back at a decade’s worth of the weird and wacky. Look for more next Friday before the weekly Crime Beat returns Aug. 12. February 2006 Thrifty Foods staff were suspicious of an unknown male who was seen entering and exiting the store several times. When confronted about the lump under his jacket, the suspect removed a roast, threw it at staff and fled. Further investigation revealed four packages of steaks, valued at $140, hidden in nearby bushes. February 2008 The driver of a taxi reported he had taken a
passenger to the ferry terminal and that when the passenger could not pay her fare, she had offered the driver a small amount of marijuana instead. The driver contacted police who attended the scene. Officers resolved the civil dispute and disposed of the marijuana. June 2008 A report was received that two males were fighting at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club and that one of the men was thrown through the window. Subjects were gone upon arrival but the investigation revealed the argument was verbal only and it was a shot glass that was thrown through the window. Window damage: $200. January 2009 Complainant reported that a person had taken his vehicle from the pub without his permission. Minutes later the vehicle was reported to be involved in a single-car accident. Investigation revealed the complainant was actually driving and
had filed a false report. The complainant was served with a violation ticket and was given a 24-hour roadside suspension. September 2010 Complainant reported a confused male who appeared to be drunk had entered his residence. The suspect had taken his shoes off and indicated he thought he was in the home of a friend. Police interviewed the suspect who had no history of break and enter and determined this was a case of mistaken entry. The suspect, who was very remorseful, was transported to his home in Ladner. April 2014 Complainant called to report a domestic dispute. Police officers attended and spoke with the subject of complaint, who advised that after having a bad day at work he was talking loudly, swearing and singing while having a shower. Police officers determined he is the sole occupant and that there was no domestic dispute.
The man apologized for the disturbance. April 2015 Complainant reported her home was entered sometime during the past few days while she was out of town. The suspect left the lights on, the tub full of water and used a towel. The complainant had purchased the home two weeks prior and believes the suspect entered the home via the electronic lock on the front door using a pass code. Lock is scheduled to be changed. Police to follow up with real estate agent as well as with the previous homeowner. July 2015 Police stopped a vehicle where it appeared the driver was having an argument with his passenger. Investigation revealed the passenger was actually talking on a cell phone in an animated manner. While speaking with the driver, police noticed indicia of drug use and the driver admitted to having recently used cocaine. The suspect was determined
to be impaired by drugs and was given a roadside suspension; his license was seized and his vehicle impounded. November 2015 Police attended the scene after receiving a report that a vehicle was continually revving its engine. The driver was located holding the keys to the vehicle and admitted he had been consuming alcohol. Breath samples provided read “Fail” and as a consequence a 90-day roadside suspension was issued. Further investigation found the vehicle had struck a parked car and a ticket was issued to the suspect for driving without due care. The suspect was driven home by police. April 2016 Complainant reported that while her vehicle was parked at the boat launch someone had written “nice parking job asshole” with a Sharpie on the vehicle window. No suspects or witnesses. The complainant was able to clean the writing off with no permanent damage.

Police seize B&E shop on wheels
Delta police found what amounted to a “mobile B&E shop” last Wednesday in Tsawwassen. In a Facebook post, police said an officer saw a U-Haul truck drive by his car in the 1500-block of 56th Street at 2:30 a.m. He pulled the truck over and found the female driver and male passenger to be in possession of break-in tools, including bolt cutters, pry bars, flashlights, dark toques, two-way radios, a hammer and several cloth shopping bags. A radio jammer was also found. “The jammer works by preventing outgoing and in-coming radio transmissions and cell phone reception,” the Facebook post explained. The truck and contents were seized. Police noted the pair has extensive police history and are well practiced in the art of property crime and break and enter. Police later determined the female is on probation for a variety of offences.

t’s quite likely the two fatal crashes that took place three months apart on Ladner Trunk had nothing more in common than location, but they do get you thinking about the safety of that well-travelled road. With a number of freeways — Highway 99, Highway 17, Highway 17A and Highway 91 — crisscrossing Delta, Trunk Road isn’t meant to be a major player in this area’s road network, but the narrow farm road, complete with deep ditches, still manages to carry its fair share of traffic. The crash that killed two people from Richmond in April and the one that claimed the life of a Langley teen earlier this month were both on a straight, flat stretch during good weather conditions, so it’s difficult to lay blame on the road, but it has characteristics — nothing to stop vehicles from crossing the centre line and no bail out on the shoulder — that clearly played a role in these and other collisions. It’s impossible to crash-proof any stretch of asphalt, but as Ladner Trunk carries more and more vehicles, you’ve got to wonder whether the two-lane throughway, at least in its current configuration, is up to the task. Delta has added three sets of traffic lights between 72nd and 88th streets to help manage the flow on the stretch between East Ladner and the Highway 99 interchange that has increased in recent years due to a busy little airport, greenhouses and new industrial development. Volume on the east side of the interchange is bolstered by westbound traffic out of Surrey bound for Highway 99 that will often just stay on Trunk Road to 96th Street rather than making a left onto Highway 91. Whatever the reason — and it might be the simple fact that Ladner Trunk is the closest or most direct route for many drivers — the historic road carries a lot of traffic, a situation that will only be exacerbated when the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel opens six years from now. I realize any type of fix would be costly and time consuming, but arguing it’s not a freeway and that drivers should use major routes hasn’t done anything to curb volumes. Reducing the speed limit might do the trick, but would certainly prove unpopular. I guess the alternative is to do nothing and just hope we don’t have to endure any more tragedies.
Getting a firsthand look at expanded Panama Canal
R
ecently I took a boat to Florida via the Panama Canal. The cruise ship, with 1,900 passengers, was being repositioned from Alaska to the Caribbean, so it provided my “bucket list” journey through the Panama Canal. Before leaving I assured the editor of this paper there would be no travel expense invoice for my research into the canal and how it operates. The 80-kilometre canal was once the largest construction project in the world. Started in 1880 by the French visionary who had built the Suez Canal, it was abandoned after a decade of frustration, the loss of over 20,000 lives and millions of dollars. The Americans, not wanting to have to send their navy around the southern tip of South America in order to deploy from west coast to east coast, decided in 1903 to finish it. Smartly, they dealt with mosquitoes, yellow fever and massive health challenges first, and then hired on tens of thousands of workers. After another
Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON
decade they finished the project and at the start of the First World War, the first ship went through. While the land on either side of the canal was American territory, it became the country of Panama in 1999. Canal operations make a significant financial contribution to the country’s economy and is running at capacity. Our passage cost the Holland American Line over $300,000 (US). The canal passage from Pacific to Atlantic took about 10 hours. There are three sets of locks at each of the entrances on the Pacific and Atlantic. In between
we travelled on water/lake at an elevation of about 85 feet above sea level. On this journey you pass through the Continental Divide that has been excavated down to sea level. The genius of the design is that the water needed for each passage — about one million gallons — is supplied by rivers and streams within Panama that have been diverted to form this waterway. So no moving parts, no pumps! Part of my interest was to look at the engineering of the new locks and canal that were started in 1939 and are now finished. It will allow for much larger ships and for more than a doubling of ship capacity. With that new capacity many more and larger ships will be able to transit from Asia right through to the eastern United States and Europe. Amongst other matters, the new canal will substantially dampen and delay the need for port expansion at Roberts Bank. Ian Robertson is long-time resident of South Delta who had this journey on his bucket list.

Justice system gives mental illness too much weight
Editor: Re: Trial wraps up in just two days, July 22 Except for criminals, everyone respects the rule of law and does not wish to see innocent people imprisoned. The travesty of our criminal justice system, and the attitude of some of its practitioners, is the subordination of the truth to a mystical reverence for the law itself.
The diagnosis of Richard Dale Maranda as schizophrenic does not alter the fact he intentionally killed his father. I am well aware prosecutors must prove both mental and physical culpability to establish the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The law also states defendants are presumed to be of sound mind. The Supreme Court of Canada determined in
1990 that a mentally disordered offender must be unable to appreciate that his actions are morally — not legally — wrong, which is a highly subjective standard in a world where practically nothing is sacred anymore. The prosecutor in this case absurdly refers to the defendant as “morally innocent.” How? He got away with murder. Such astonishing language from
an attorney emboldens every criminal in Canada. Being mostly pathological liars, criminals shamelessly claim ignorance, coercion, blame drug addiction or falsify mental illness to excuse their malevolence. It’s my belief that many mental illnesses are exaggerated or falsified. Schizophrenia is real and those afflicted with it deserve proper treatment.
However, homosexuality was once declared a mental illness. We should all be skeptical of designating normal and harmless behaviours, emotions, habits or lifestyles as diseases. By that standard, expressing a religious belief would be a symptom of an unsound mind. I am unnerved at the inordinate attention given to mental illness in the justice system — as if psy-
chopaths deserve compassion rather than solitary confinement for their brutality. Other lamentable commentators have postulated the terrorists who struck in Ottawa, Orlando and across Europe were merely disturbed young men. Is evil now classified as a disease of the mind? If so, then we are all doomed. Steven Austin

Bridge opponents don’t have to disclose their political leanings, a letter writer contends.
Writers don’t need to identify their stripes
Editor: Re: Those who bash bridge must show political stripes, letter to the editor, July 20 Cecilia Tanner asked: “Who are these letter writers knocking the new bridge idea, and I mean politically?... I invite the future bridge-hating letter writers to come out of their closet, and identify their political stripes.” The answer to that
question is: It’s none of her business who anyone else supports or votes for. As long as we live in a social democracy, which supports our charter rights, then we are still free to write letters to the editor of our local paper without having to divulge our political stripes, and without fear of repercussion. It really shouldn’t be necessary for letter writers to reveal their political
Can’t pay bills at the counter
Editor: I went to the bank today to pay some bills from my account only to find that the bank no longer accepts payments over the counter (as of June 6). I was directed to the ATM to pay my bills. I do not have an ATM card and never intend to get one. For some people, there would be extra ATM fees. Am I a dinosaur? I thought banks were to serve us, not for us to serve the banks. L.M. Hladik

affiliations anyway. As an intelligent reader, I can usually make an educated guess based on the tone of the letter. Did anyone else notice that, even though Tanner insists all other letter writers reveal their political stripes, she did not actually do so herself.
I can only guess who Tanner supports provincially. A. Cameron
Editor: I wonder when the traffic engineers in Delta will get around to setting up the traffic lights in Tsawwassen? Currently we have lights that show no red hand countdown or they do count down but do not correlate to an amber/red light (18th Avenue and 56th Street, 16th Avenue and 56th Street, and 53A Street and 12th Avenue). The lights at Windsor Woods and 56th Street and at 9th Avenue and 56th Street take too long to activate.
The intersection of 53A Street and 12th Avenue is activated by vehicles travelling north-south without any red hand countdown for the majority of the traffic that travels east-west on 12th Avenue, and usually at a high rate of speed, creating a sudden amber light. These traffic light inefficiencies are creating dangerous situations for drivers and pedestrians. With poor driving styles pervading Tsawwassen, it’s incumbent on Delta to tackle this problem. Girly American Staffordshire Terrier Cross, White with Brown, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 7 years old)
Poor sweet Girly was left at a boarding facility after her owner fell ill. She was there for a little over 3 months and started to deteriorate. Now that she is here she is starting to turn over a new leaf! Girly is very sweet tempered and aims to please. You can see that she has not had a lot of positive interaction with neither humans nor dogs in a while and can come across as standoffish at first. She needs an adult only, experienced family who is willing to remind her how amazing humans are with gentle and consistent handling. We also believe her fear of other dogs will subside by introducing her to lots of good, gentle dogs and build her confidence back up. She does not have aggression towards other dogs but may be reactive if provoked or behind a fence. Please chat with staff for more information.

Welcomes You
It is certainly one of those ideas that is readily spoken when someone is planning to take some well-deserved time off, but at the same time has a “things to do” list that would wear out the most ardent workaholic. Yes, change is good. It takes you out of the daily familiar run of things. It opens different opportunities and experiences. It can re-invigorate one that is just worn out by the same old thing drudgery. Not everyone likes things to be shaken up a little bit but sometimes that is helpful when it reminds us to be thankful for the daily routine, constant blessings that sur-

thing to open up a new possibility, a different insight, an opportunity not previously imagined. It has been said that the only constant in life is change. Yes, change is good, but so is a rest. Just the freedom to let go, shut down the treadmill of life, set aside for a while the demands that pull on our time, energy and brain power. Matthew 11: 28 – 29 encourages us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Simple ways to maintain your mental acuity Many people know that a combination of a healthy diet and routine exercise is the best way to maintain their physical health. But, what about mental well-being? Memory lapses are often assumed to be an accepted side effect of aging, but such an assumption is incorrect, as there are many steps men and women can take to maintain their mental acuity well into their golden years. Find time for cardiovascular exercise. Cardiovascular exercise can help men and women maintain healthy weights and reduce their risk for potentially deadly ailments like diabetes and heart disease. But cardiovascular exercise also can boost brain power. Cardiovascular exercise pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain, and that blood contains glucose that can fuel brain cells. Cardiovascular exercise also strengthens blood vessels, which can help prevent potentially devastating diseases, such as stroke, that can have a

lassic cars will be shining during the Sun Festival at Winskill Park
Monday. The third annual Tsawwassen Classic Car Show is expected to bring in over 250 vehicles, says show chair Don MacAllister. “This is the third year and we have increased every year by at least a third, conservatively speaking. Not only in entrants but in vendors and sponsors also,” he says. Entries are expected from various parts of
the province and some from Washington state. Approximately 40 trophies will be handed out and a few categories have been added by request, he adds. “I think the way it’s shaping up now we’re going to have an awesome crowd and hopefully we’re going to have a really nice weather day, too.” He notes a local club will be bringing about 25 Porsches while a Lamborghini Spyder is also expected to be there, adding there will be lots of specialty cars and not just the classics. MacAllister hopes some motorcycles will be on display as well. Owners enjoy answering questions from the
public about their cars, he says. “They love talking about their vehicles. It’s just so much … fun.”
It’s going to be a dandy. DON MACALLISTER
The winning entry from this year’s inaugural Soap Box Derby will be at the show, he notes, adding the driver will also have the first place trophy on display. “That’s kind of cool, really, especially for the youngsters.” Like last year, a cruiseby
on Sunday is also planned. It starts at 6 p.m. at the South Delta Recreation Centre and will head down 56th Street to 1st Avenue, then over to English Bluff Road and up to 12th Avenue, making its way back to the recreation centre on 56th Street. Last year between 25 and 35 vehicles took part in the cruiseby, which was pretty darn good for the first try at it, says MacAllister. He’s also hoping a few classics make it out to the Sun Festival’s Drive-In Movie Night Sunday at Beach Grove Elementary. This year’s car show is raising money for breast cancer research. Donations in support
of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation can be made at the registration desk in return for a homemade pink ribbon. “We’re going to try and raise as much as we can in the way of funds to go into research,” says MacAllister. ICBC will have a wreck on the field while Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Delta community police volunteers will also be in attendance, he adds. Dueck will once again be offering charity test drives. The classic car show takes place Monday at Winskill Park. It’s open to the public a little after 10 a.m. “It’s going to be a dandy,” says MacAllister.
Tsawwassen Sun Festival fun goes all weekend long The 44th annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival takes place this B.C. Day long weekend with lots of activities and attractions on tap. New for this year is a Drive-In Movie Night, set
for Sunday at Beach Grove Elementary. The sci-fi classic Back to the Future will be shown. Monday kicks off with a pancake breakfast and also includes the Rotary parade, which will head
from 16th Avenue to Winskill Park along 56th Street. The parade starts at 11 a.m. A Kids Fun Zone goes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Stage entertainment
Monday includes dancing and a pie eating contest. There will also be a Mentor of the Arts award presentation. The beer garden runs for all three days while Sun Fest also includes slo-pitch
and volleyball tournaments. A marketplace runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. The antique fair is back at South Delta Recreation Centre on Sunday and Monday.

Leisurely sail along the Norfolk Broads CHERIE THIESSEN
Optimist contributor
My partner and skipper, David Dossor, loves munching kippers or a ploughman’s lunch while sipping the ales on tap in Britain’s historic pubs. Our friends, Gerry McKeating and Pat Crossley, are avid and expert birders who have come on this trip specifically for the best bird watching in the country. One-quarter of the country’s rare wildlife and flora exist in the Broads, Britain’s largest protected wetland. I love wandering through ancient ruins: crumbling abbeys and standing stones, shards of castles and historic landmarks, awed at tangible presences of our species’ long history. So, we indulge each of our passions while traveling through scenic fertile flatlands abloom with yellow canola blossoms, barley and vegetable crops with a cow or five dotted in to make the pastoral
The Amethyst Light leaves the base at Herbert Woods. landscape iconic, and all this aboard a luxurious 45-foot cruiser. It has to be the most perfect trip imaginable. The Norfolk Broads have a long history and the list of reasons to visit this low-lying region in southeast Britain is just as long. Our mode of travel was decided: the best way to visit the area was to meet it right where it lives — in the water. Here we are at Potter Heigham, the base for Herbert Woods. Established 90 years ago, it’s one of the oldest and most respected charter
companies in the Broads. We’re aboard Amethyst Light, complete with its bow thrusters, full sliding canopy, LCD TVs and room for the four of us to spread out. After spending our first night at the base trying to decide which of the three staterooms to take, becoming familiar with our yacht and burning the sausages, we’re now keen to begin our zigzag journeys up and down the Rivers Thurne, Bure and Ant. It will be a leisurely nine-day meandering that will take us to Horsey
Mere and home to one of many wind pumps, built to drain the marshlands. Hickling Broad, the bird watchers paradise, is next. While the three of us are polishing up our binoculars and hoping to spot a Cetti’s warbler or marsh harrier, David is calling The Pleasure Boat Pub to reserve for dinner and mooring, already anticipating trying each of its four award-winning ales. On Day 2 we power slowly back on River Thune onto River Bure, winding our way from Hickling to Great Yarmouth, en route
exploring another photogenic wind pump, Stacey Arms drainage mill, built around 1883. We tie up at the yacht station for two days of wandering on Yarmouth’s endless beaches and immersing ourselves in the past. The Broads is the name given to this low lying region in southeast England that in the 12th century was the most densely populated and intensely farmed area in the country. When wood ran out and another source of fuel was needed, peat digging became widespread.
Flash forward two centuries and now the rising ocean levels have filled the immense holes and the profitable industry is scuttled. However, eventually the resulting channels become arteries of commerce and the beginning of what will become a new enterprise is slowly becoming apparent — recreational boating on over 200 kilometres of semisaline lakes and rivers. Leaving Great Yarmouth, we make our way to the River Ant to Stalham and the granddaddy of all museums, the extensive Museum of the Broads. At this point, I think it’s day five and so it goes. We enjoy leisurely visits to market towns like Horning and Wroxham to buy fresh early produce and to sit down to a British tea. We ogle and photograph archeological treasures like the ancient church at West Somerton and the ruins of St. Benet’s Abbey in South Walsham. And there’s only one day of May rain.

Stalling recognized at Games Local lacrosse player receives W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Besides the great results on the podium at the BC Summer Games, Delta’s Max Stalling received the W.R. Bennett Award for Athletic Excellence. Stalling is a standout in lacrosse, having competed at the 2014 BC Summer Games in field lacrosse and in box lacrosse at the 2016 BC Summer Games. He has led his local and school teams to championships and has been selected tournament most valuable player. This year he was identified by the provincial coaching staff and selected for Team BC to attend the national championships. “I have always had a love for sports and in particular lacrosse,” he said. “I have always put my 100 per cent effort into every practice and game.” Stalling was a key contributor to his team at the BC Summer Games, but suffered a broken arm that left him sidelined. He showed his leadership by cheering on his Vancouver Coastal teammates to a
bronze medal finish. Currently a student at South Delta Secondary, Stalling has been recognized with the Athletic Achievement Award for junior field lacrosse and was the MVP in the final game of the provincial championships. He is also an accomplished athlete in basketball and football. Off the field, Stalling has been actively involved in LAX4LIFE, a fundraising event for cancer research. His mother, Nancy, has been battling breast cancer since 2011 and in her honour he has raised more than $8,200. The W.R. Bennett Award recognizes one BC Summer Games athlete for their achievement in sport and leadership. Nominees were evaluated on sport accomplishments, ambition and leadership. Stalling was nominated by BC Lacrosse and chosen by a B.C. Games Society selection panel. The award includes a $2,500 bursary to use towards future sport expenses or post-secondary education.

BUNTAIN, Sheila March 27, 1944 - July 23, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Buntain, surrounded by her family, after a hard fought, year-long battle with cancer. Predeceased by her parents Jack & Annie, Sheila is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Robert, daughter Marianne (Rich), son Mike (Trenna), Thea, four grandchildren (Kelton, Larissa, Bradley, and Alyssa) and brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Nancy Buntain. An outgoing and generous person with a great sense of humour, Sheila also leaves behind many good friends. After retiring from a long career with the airline, Sheila enjoyed travelling with her husband, spending time with family, and volunteering in the community. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Irene Thomas Hospice, as well as the caregivers from ParaMed, who helped Sheila over the past few months. A celebration of life will be held from 1-4PM on Saturday, August 6, at the home of John and Nancy Buntain: 5812 48A Avenue, Ladner. No flowers please, but donations to the Delta Hospice Society or a charity of your choice in Sheila’s memory would be appreciated. www.mem.com
