The red hot real estate market in Delta has started to cool.

The latest figures from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver for July indicate residential property sales in the

region saw a decrease from the sales recorded in July 2015, as well as a decrease compared to June 2016.

“After several months of record-breaking sales activity, home buyer demand returned to more historically normal levels in July,” said Dan Morrison,

While sales of detached properties this July saw an overall decrease compared to July 2015, the “benchmark price” for those properties overall are now 38 per cent higher.

$1,033,400, a slight decrease of less than one per cent from the previous month. However, since July 2015 the price rose 36.6 per cent. The price in Tsawwassen was at $1,269,700, which was a decrease of under one per cent as well.

The slight decreases in Ladner and Tsawwassen were the first drop in a long time and reflective of other communities that saw prices barely move up or downward.

Canada Post review underway

Process is important to determine future of mail service, says Delta MP IAN JACQUES

As contract negotiations between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers continues, behind the scenes, a formal review into Canada Post and its operations is now well underway.

The review, which started in May, will be carried out in two phases and should be complete by the end of the year.

During the first phase, a task force is reviewing the services that are currently being offered by Canada Post. They will gather relevant information from a variety of sources and will assess the costs and benefits associated with different business activities.

The task force will then develop and produce a discussion paper that will then help identify options for postal service across the country.

During the second phase of the review, expected to start in early fall, a parliamentary committee will examine

Qualtrough said she plans to be fully engaged in the review process when the time comes and will be bringing forth her concerns and those of her constituents directly to the task force.

She also plans to hold town hall meetings in Delta to get residents’ views.

“In the fall I will have a town hall so we can make sure we have a coordinated Delta effort to ensure that information is filtered into the review,” she said.

“It’s important that everyone’s views are heard.”

Planned changes to provincial regulations has Delta concerned it could leave the door open to contaminated material being dumped on farmland.

The Ministry of Environment is currently in consultation about proposed revisions to its current site identification process, aimed at bringing contaminated sites to the attention of the ministry when a parcel of land is at a stage when it’s being decommissioned or before reuse or redevelopment.

Owners of properties where industrial or commercial activities have occurred with the potential for soil or groundwater contamination must submit a site profile when the owner seeks a subdivision, rezoning, redevelopment permit, soil removal permit or demolition permits.

Delta is sending its concerns in writing to the province.

If contamination is found, the ministry will generally not allow a municipality to issue permits until a certificate of compliance is issued.

The ministry, according to a Delta staff report, intends to remove the spoil removal, demolition

and subdivision triggers for the identification process.

The staff report says that, “as this can potentially be the first application made prior to the redevelopment of a site and it is imperative that contamination be identified before

soil is removed from a site on another site. This is particularly relevant where soils could potentially be moved to agricultural lands.”

Council recently discussed the report, conveying concerns about the potential impact to Delta farmland.

“I’m having a really hard time seeing why the ministry would take this approach, because we do want to know if soil is contaminated before it’s removed and put on another site,” said Coun.

Delta CAO George Harvie noted it’s not clear what is the province’s motivation for the changes, since it seems like a step backward. He said Delta’s experiences are different than most because it’s an agricultural community where excavation fill throughout the Lower Mainland has been dumped.

Sean McGill, director of human resources and corporate planning, noting the ministry may be wanting to make its process more efficient, said Delta staff will see if Delta’s own soil bylaws can act as a barrier.

Delta has taken a number of measures in recent years to ensure agricultural lands are not being used as a dumping ground for the region’s construction and contaminated soil, starting with a new bylaw requiring a permit before material can be trucked in.

Council also approved other legislation to regulate soil removal and deposit activities, legislation that’s supported through monitoring, by land and air, by Delta staff as well as a Soil Watch program in which area farmers act as Delta’s eyes and ears.

Delta will send its concerns in writing to the province.

Further expansion unclear for LNG plant

Proposed deal to supply product from Tilbury liquefied natural gas facility to Hawaii falls through SANDOR GYARMATI

It’s not clear what will become of any further expansion for FortisBC’s Tilbury liquefied natural gas plant following a proposed deal to supply product to Hawaii fell through.

Late last month, a longterm contract, which would have financed a second major expansion worth hundreds of millions of dollars, was squashed after a regulatory body rejecting a proposed merger between Hawaiian Electric Co. and Florida-based NextEra Energy. In May, a deal was announced with Hawaiian Electric to deliver 800,000 metric tonnes from the Tilbury LNG facility for 20 years, starting in 2021. When the deal was announced, B.C. Minister of Natural

Gas Development Rich Coleman said the agreement showcases the province’s capacity to supply clean energy to new markets.

However, that deal was contingent on the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission approving the merger.

FortisBC is already undertaking a $400-million expansion at its Tilbury plant.

In operation since 1971, the plant cools natural gas into a liquid state for storage. It’s then converted back into gas vapour and delivered by pipeline during periods of high demand.

A FortisBC spokesperson at the time of the Hawaii deal noted the new contract would have meant additional liquefaction equipment and a storage tank would be needed

Asked about any future expansion at Tilbury, a FortisBC spokesperson

issued a statement only saying the site at Tilbury can accommodate additional storage and liquefaction equipment, which

is what makes it attractive to potential customers.

“Currently we are in discussion with a number of other potential customers who are interested in LNG. If we bring on new LNG customers, our Tilbury operations will need to increase to meet the demand and we’ll be looking to expand our facility.”

FortisBC notes that “in addition to upgrading the facility to fulfill a future expansion, we’ll also need to build new electrical power lines so we can continue powering Tilbury with clean electricity. We’ve started very early discussions with elected representatives, city officials, local landowners and community groups about constructing a new 230 kV power line connecting Tilbury to BC Hydro’s Arnott substation in Delta.”

Delta firefighters clean up fuel spill IAN JACQUES

A potential environmental accident was avoided Tuesday morning thanks to the efforts of Delta firefighters.

Just after 11 a.m. firefighters responded to a call of a Hazmat incident near the Audley Boulevard Canal on Annacis Island.

Deputy fire Chief Brad Wilson said four trucks were initially called out, but one truck was stood down half way from arriving on scene.

Wilson said the call came in as a Hazmat two call.

According to the incident report, a semi-truck with a trailer was attempting to dock at a nearby business when it hit the saddle tank passenger-side

of a parked semi-truck and trailer.

“When the operator realized what had happened he shut off the fuel transfer between the two saddle tanks, which is a good save,” said Wilson, adding that the truck operator estimated a little over 400 litres of diesel fuel had been spilled. “When the fire crews arrived, the truck operator had already deployed their spill kit and was attempting to clean-up the fuel spill, but unfortunately most of the spill had entered the storm drain system.”

Wilson said the first engine crew used some absorb-all that they had and then Hazmat truck No. 7 arrived and they tracked it down with the help of the Corporation of Delta’s engineering department

More weird and wacky Crime Beat This is Part Two of a ‘Best of’ compilation while the weekly column is on temporary hiatus

South Delta Crime Beat The weekly Crime Beat is taking a two-week hiatus due to vacations at the Delta Police Department, so the Optimist, thanks to a suggestion by reader Megan Kureluk, has compiled the Best of Crime Beat during its absence.

We take a look back at a decade’s worth of the weird and wacky. The weekly Crime Beat returns Aug. 12.

January 2008 Complainants reported to police they had arrived home to find 20 to 30 youths partying in their residence. Police attended the residence and the pariters were dispersed without incident. An investigation revealed one of the complainants had planned a party while her mother was out. On

discovering her mother was coming home early, the complainant left the residence and called 911 alleging a break-andenter, which subsequently proved to be false.

February 2008 Police received a report from a Tsawwassen grocery store that a suspect known as the “Butter Thief” was in the store.

On arrival police located the suspect outside of the store. Investigation indicated the suspect was under an order not to go to this store. The suspect was arrested for breaching the conditions of his release.

October 2009 Complainant reported that while driving her vehicle with her son as a passenger, she observed a vehicle driving aggresively, swerving and coming to stop in front of her. The suspect exited the vehicle to scream at her at a red

Suspect advised police that complainant was driving well below the speed limit and he was trying to teach her a lesson.

Suspect issued a ticket for driving without consideration and given an order to repair windshield and secure hood.

November 2013 Complainant provided police with the licence plate number of a vehicle where the driver had struck her car with a jug of milk while she was driving in the grocery store parking lot. Police spoke with the driver who indicated the complainant had almost hit his car and

he had reacted by smacking her car with the jug of milk. Police warned the suspect about possible consequences of his actions and the complainant was advised to drive much slower through the parking lot. Both parties satisfied with police intervention.

March 2015 Complainant reported four males had stolen her car from her residence.

Investigation revealed the complainant was fairly intoxicated and had claimed someone had rummaged through her purse while she was imbibing at a local estab-

lishment. Further investigation determined the complainant’s friend had likely taken her keys in order to prevent her from driving her vehicle and had subsequently driven her home in a different car.

The vehicle was located in the parking lot of the establishment with no indication that it had been stolen.

September 2015 The supermarket reported two females left the store with a full grocery cart without paying and got into a vehicle with a male driver. Police attended and identified the suspects from video surveillance. In the meantime both suspects attended police headquarters and turned themselves in.

They claimed the driver had become angry when he discovered they had not paid for the groceries and threw the groceries off a bridge. The incident

is still under investigation for possible arrest and charges.

September 2015 Intoxicated and upset complainant reported that she had her purse stolen while at a house party. Police assisted with retrieving the purse, which the complainant had misplaced, and transported her into the care of a family member.

March 2016 Complainant reported the neighbour had been throwing Ziploc bags of water over the back fence into her yard at her dog.

Subject advised he was doing this because he was annoyed with the dog barking incessantly.

Subject advised his actions were not at all appropriate and that he should gather necessary evidence for Delta’s bylaws department so it could handle the issue.

A

new lease on life?

It’s one thing to save a heritage home. It’s quite another to give it a new lease on life.

Civic officials have had mixed results over the years in dealing with the municipality’s oldest structures, preserving some, but losing others to the wrecking ball. Many have fallen into disrepair while others have struggled to find a suitable second act in a time when land is very much at a premium.

The most recent chapter in this saga is the Gillespie House, a tiny home that stood on Ladner’s 47A Avenue long before that stretch of road sported a numeric moniker. The property is being redeveloped so owners John and Anne Flaming are moving the 1901 home to their farm where it’s to be used as a storage shed.

The couple spoke out recently, questioning the value of preserving a heritage home, only to squirrel it away from public view. With no one living in it and no one appreciating its history, the Flamings openly wonder how much will be gained by relocating the 115-year-old house. They’ve suggested that if Delta is intent on saving these old homes, the municipality should provide a spot to relocate them a la the Burnaby Village Museum.

They raise a valid point in that finding a purpose for a home’s next phase should be just as important as the effort put forth to save it, although it’s not necessarily up to Delta to provide landing spots for these old places, particularly if doing so exposes taxpayers to any kind of bill.

A historic park would be a good location for the first dozen or so homes, and could well become a tourist attraction/ education centre, but when it comes to accommodating heritage structures, that concept has a finite capacity, so I’m not sure it’s a long-term solution to an issue that rears its head regularly.

We’ve already seen heritage homes, and even a couple of barns, moved to various parks in Delta but there’s only so much room and so many potential uses for them, so if we’re going to preserve these structures, it’s likely got to be as homes. Hopefully Delta’s longawaited heritage strategy includes provisions and incentives that allow that to happen. I’m not sure exactly how it all should be structured, but I do know that turning them into storage sheds isn’t the answer.

Scope of the farming business is oftentimes overlooked

inister of Agriculture Norm Letnick was in Delta yet again this past Tuesday morning to announce that regulations have been developed to afford farmers opportunity to supplement their incomes with agri-tourism initiatives. The support from the ministry for Delta has been very strong indeed.

The announcement was made at Emma Lea farms on Westham Island and was well attended by local farmers and the press.

North Delta MLA Scott Hamilton organized the event and made the opening remarks and introductions to speakers that included councillor, farmer, chair of the Delta Agricultural Advisory Committee and candidate to be the local Liberal nominee Ian Paton, chair of the Agricultural land Commission Frank Leonard, Stan Vander Waal, chair of the BC Agriculture council, Al Richmond, president, Union of BC Municipalities and Minister Letnick who had this to say: “The B.C. government is committed to an Agricultural Land Reserve that works for farmers and helps them grow their businesses through farming, food production and activities like agri-tourism. These regulations offer a needed balance while allowing B.C. farmers to supplement their incomes through secondary activities that support farming and agriculture on their land.”

As costs associated with farming operations continue to rise, supplemental revenues are important and will help to keep many farms focused on producing food for us.

I think that we often overlook the scope of the farming business and sometimes take food production for granted. Today’s farmers need to be innovative to operate in a competitive and complicated environment that is fraught with risk on many levels.

It is fitting that the announcement was made on Westham Island which may soon be the beneficiary of $6 million in irrigation infrastructure if the MK Delta Lands deal receives final approval from Delta and the ALC. You may recall that several years ago, John Savage and other local farmers and the DFI were able to negotiate several million dollars in road and irrigation and drainage improvements as a part of the SFPR construction.

Our farming community has to be nimble and able to negotiate firmly with governments, the port authority and other agencies to ensure that there are adequate lands to farm. It seems like this is a never ending issue that always requires compromise.

We will need a strong voice from the farming community when the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project gets underway.

In his speech at the agritourism announcement, Paton was clearly able to speak to the challenges that the farming community faces on a regular basis.

He was also able to appropriately describe how important our region is to the overall agriculture economy in British Columbia. He further noted that the agri-tourism initiative is exactly the type of thing that appeals to younger generations of farmers, and that here in Delta, we are finally starting to see a modest turnaround with younger people assessing opportunities in the industry.

Paton sees a bright future for farming in Delta and has been pleased to see that cooperation between the farming community and local and provincial governments has been increasing.

Even though it was a gloomy morning, the positive messaging at the announcement was enough to put smiles on everyone’s faces.

We’re lucky to have solid relationships and strong leadership on agricultural issues here in Delta.

Council’s decision undermines bog protection

Editor: Re: Council OKs plan for Burns Bog, July 29 Delta’s approval to destroy a significant chunk of bog for industrial development is a decision that will impact bog ecology and it undermines the original intent of protecting the bog under the terms of the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Agreement signed 15 years ago by four levels of government.

Within the agreement: “The intent is to prevent any occupation or use of

the bog that will impair or interfere with the current state of the bog.” Further, under land use restrictions the agreement clearly states that “the province, Delta, GVRD (Metro Vancouver) shall do everything to be done, that does or could [My emphasis] reasonably be expected to destroy impair or diminish, negatively affect, or alter the bog.”

Delta was under no obligation to release bog land for industrial development.

The counter argument

made by Bog pro-developers is that since parts of the bog is excluded from the original conservancy agreement it is therefore eligible for destruction; however, Delta recognized the importance of the impacts of bog lands outside the conservancy area. In 2013 Delta, in a new agreement with Metro Vancouver, acknowledged that though the Nature Reserve located well beyond the conservancy area, it was nevertheless “a component of the larger Burns Bog ecosystem”;

the Nature Reserve is now recognized as part of the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area and placed under the stewardship of Metro Vancouver.

CAO George Harvie went on to say that the Nature Reserve “was always part of the Burns Bog agreement moving in this direction.” So why isn’t the same principle adhered to when it comes to all bog land adjacent and contiguous to the conservancy area?

My recollection is that when Delta negotiated

with the province to save the bog it was the intention that all bog lands inside and outside the conservancy area was to be “moved in this direction.”

Today Delta council members are patting each other on their backs with the mayor calling it a “redletter day” – a significant day for MK Delta Lands.

Naively, Ian Paton says this development will curb further port development of farmland.

Meanwhile Bruce McDonald rationalizes

industrial encroachment as “the only way to preserve most of it was to allow some development.”

The long, over-extended tenured councillor, McDonald is notorious with his verbiage that “a half-full glass is better than an empty glass.”

Sometimes this political approach can work, but with a bog reliant on its hydrological regime, a half glass of water infected, is no bog ecosystem at all.

Some full glasses remain worthy of fighting for.

Behaviour of motorists can be downright insane FOOT

Editor: As a pedestrian and often cyclist and motorist in the Tsawwassen area, I find the behaviour of other motorists sometimes downright insane.

I think a lot of this behavior is rooted in ignorance of the law, reality and basic physics, allowing the motorist to justify treating others in ways that put other lives in very real danger.

First of all I’d like to go

over the math. Did you know a small car generates 50 tons of force when it hits an object at 50km/h?

This accelerates the victim instantly, breaking anything it impacts, and puts the pedestrian or cyclist at risk of serious injury or even death.

And all of this because you didn’t want to wake up five minutes earlier for work?

I am willing to bet that if polled, the population

of Tsawwassen are completely clueless that it is clearly outlined in the law that anywhere there is an intersection, marked or unmarked, crosswalk or not, anywhere two roads meet in a perpendicular fashion, pedestrians have the right of way to cross both streets, and the intersection is legally a crosswalk in both directions.

Should others be possibly injured or killed because you are unedu-

cated?

That is a good question to ask yourself before you turn the car key. After all, as a driver it is your responsibility to know the rules of the road and adhere to them at all times.

I wonder if the same population is completely ignorant to the fact that cyclists are legally entitled to the lanes the same as cars are. That if you want to pass them, you

must do so when it is safe and in the adjacent lane, rather than attempting to run them off the road putting their life at risk?

If at any time you have thought to yourself, “Hey, that pedestrian shouldn’t be crossing there!” think about whether or not that is punishable by death. Hit the brake, and give them a wide berth, by the grace of god it’s not someone you love.

B.C. not truly a wealthy province when so many are in poverty

Editor: Re: Poor term, letter to the editor, July 22 In his letter, Stephen Corber states that in a province as wealthy as British Columbia, working poor should be an oxymoron.

Who actually says B.C. is a wealthy province? Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals, in TV ads

that taxpayers are paying for? And B.C. is a wealthy province in relation to what/whom? Alberta or the Maritime provinces? Give me a break.

B.C. cannot truly call itself a wealthy province when so many of its citizens are living in poverty, regardless of whether they are labelled “working poor” or not.

The fact of the matter is that government statistics, which determine a city’s, province’s or country’s wealth, are really just superficial numbers; because they only count those people who are employed, or who are accessing governmentsponsored services.

They generally do not count all of the other

people who are really living in poverty, including children, those who are homeless, who are being supported by friends and family, and who may be part of an underground economy by necessity.

Why are thrift store and summer garage sales so popular with local residents?

It’s not because eve-

ryone has good government jobs, with expense accounts, extended benefits and defined pension plans.

While some can do so, the majority of us cannot afford to send our kids to hockey camp and private school, and have to find alternative ways in which to make ends meet.

Every week volunteers gather at Deltassist’s North Delta office to sort and package dozens of cases of artisain breads to be distrubuted throughout the community.

Monte Cristo Bakery in Delta donates anywhere from 20 to 60 cases of bread to Deltassist weekly for this purpose. Once the bread is packaged it is ready for the receipients to pick up. Bread is being distributed all over Delta and some neighbouring communities. Libraries, seniors apartments, schools, MCFD offices, community living, boys and girls clubs, legions, churches and recovery houses are just some of the destinations.

In the North Delta office, bread is available all week to anyone who wants it.

This program started three years ago when Monte Cristo Bakery moved from Burnaby to Delta.

One day they called Deltassist and asked if they could find out who in the community they should talk to about distributing their bread overages to the community, and they wanted to make sure the bread would be given away for free. The program started with 12 cases of bread and has grown ever since. Deltassist soon realized they would need some help, so a call went out to volunteers and

they thought would be able to use the bread or distribute it.

London Drugs helps guide dog group

JoJo Jojo ended up here at the shelter with his house mate Max under unfortunate circumstances; their owner passed away. Unable to get information about them from their owner we know very little about these two. We were told from a family member that they don’t like each other so they were originally housed separately. After a couple of weeks we noticed they would chatter at each other and we decided to allow them access to each other cages, turns out they don’t hate each other at all!

Lovebirds are quite social birds so we are happy Max and Jojo get along!! Lovebirds require plenty of toys, such as willow branches, swings, tunnels, boxes, wood toys and cuddle bones to keep their minds stimulated and their beaks trim.

Many people say they can’t believe in God because it involves faith.

They have to see it to believe it. Really? Always?

Have you ever ridden a bike? Thousands of us South Deltans cycle (and a few of you even wear helmets…). We have our own bike shuttle through the tunnel. We hosted three days of Tour de Delta in July.

It takes faith to ride a bike. A recent news item on cbc.ca reports: “In reality, we know precious little about how the bicycle actually works, beyond the basic mechanics of “pedal turns gear that turns wheel.”

Around Town Wiener Walk and Picnic

Calling all Dachshunds. The Western Dachshund Club’s 26th annual Wiener Walk & Picnic is set for Sunday, Aug. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Winskill Park.

Registration starts at 10:30 a.m. Entry fee is $10 for the first dog and $5 for each additional dog. Events for dogs include a wiener walk, wiener on a stick race, musical hoola hoops and more. For humans there will be a Dachshund information table, auction, 50/50 draw and hotdogs/ pop/goodies. All dogs must be on a leash at all times. No puppies under five months.

The 10 best hikes you need to do Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Every weekend during the spring to fall months my loving husband claims I am trying to kill him.

You see every weekend I take him and our hound dog Bella out on a hike.

I love hiking. It is not only a workout; it is also a form of meditation for me. A chance to get away from reality and be in the present, if only for a few hours.

Loving husband, on the other hand, finds it quite the opposite. He finds hiking to be hard, sweaty work, which is best experienced once in a while – not every Sunday.

Too bad for him that he is married to a trainer.

In today’s column I share my top 10 hikes in the Lower Mainland.

To make my top 10 list the hikes had to be quiet and void of crowds (you will not find busy hikes like the Lions, Dog Mountain, Eagle Bluffs and Quarry Rock on my list).

The hikes also have to be dog-friendly and easily marked.

They also have to be within a 60-75-minute drive from home, be a bit challenging (if I want to go for a walk I will head to the dike), and have some sort of viewpoint, water feature and/or vantage point to enjoy lunch from.

10. Lynn Peak, North Shore (Four hours, intermediate). This hike is tough, like Grouse Grind tough, however without the crowds and with an amazing view at the top.

9 kilometres, 720-metre elevation gain.

9. Brothers Creek Loop, West Vancouver (four hours, beginner-

8. Mount Seymour, North Shore (Five hours, intermediate-advanced).

This is a tough, yet beautiful hike. There are three peaks you can summit and each offer amazing views of the city and surrounding mountains. 9 kilometres, 450-metre elevation gain.

7. Lindsay Lake Loop, Buntzen Lake (Six-eight hours, advanced). Loving

husband and I did this on our anniversary a few years ago and apparently this is when he began to suspect that I was trying to kill him. This hike is very challenging, but very beautiful. It has a little bit of everything: forest, bouldering, a lake and a ton of viewpoints overlooking Vancouver. 15 kilometres, 1020-metre elevation gain.

6. Allouette Mountain, Golden Ears Provincial Park (Eight-10 hours, intermediate-advanced).

You can really escape into the wild with this hike.

You will find amazing alpine views, beautiful wild flowers, breathtaking

sights all while getting a heart-pumping workout.

20 kilometres, 1,000-metre elevation gain.

5. Norvan Falls, North Shore (Five hours, beginner-intermediate). Lush forests with a waterfall who wouldn’t want to hike this trail? Loving husband and I used this trail a lot last year when we were training for the West Coast Trail. 14 kilometres, very minimal elevation gains.

4. Mount Fromme, North Shore (Five hours, intermediate). Mount Fromme is located just east of Grouse Mountain.

We have done this hike in the snow (New Year’s Day last year), the early fall months and in the dead of summer. It’s a fantastic trail that is far less travelled than many of the other trails on my list.

10 kilometres, 880-metre elevation gain.

3. Sumas Mountain, Fraser Valley (Six hours, intermediate). We have done this hike a few times and we love it. Even loving husband does not mind this hike, which says a lot!

13.5 kilometres, 715-metre elevation gain.

2. Diez Vistas, Buntzen Lake (Six-seven hours, intermediate). Named Diez Vistas for its 10 views, this hike is one of my alltime favourites. In fact, we just did it again last weekend. Wait till viewpoint #3 for lunch – it’s got the best view. 15 kilometres, 460metre elevation gain.

1. And my favourite hike of them all is…Big Cedar to Kennedy Falls, North Shore (Five hours, intermediate). This hike is stunning. You will encounter very few people while you pass though old growth forest (including a tree they call Big Cedar, which is estimated to be 600-years old), ending at spectacular waterfall.

10 kilometres, 150-metre elevation gain.

Trying to get a bite in Algonquin Park

Humping along the trail with the paddles and fishing gear, I thought to myself, “I hope the fish are biting even as half as much as these mosquitos!”

I was part of a small group of outdoor enthusiasts portaging canoes from Lake Opeongo to tiny Minnow Lake in Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park.

I was about to do something I’d never done before – if the mosquitos didn’t eat me alive, that is.

Algonquin Park is one of my favourite places in the world. I’ve camped and canoed and hiked there on countless occasions, dating back to my childhood.

The one thing I had never done there was go fishing.

That was about to change.

We finally got to the small lake and started baiting the rods and getting the canoes ready to launch. It was a beautiful sunny day, following on the heels of two days of

rain, so I wouldn’t have to try as hard to prove that old adage, “A bad day fishing beats a good day doing almost anything else.”

Three of us piled into our canoe, a guide, myself and another fishing buddy, Darcy. Unlike me, Darcy was an experienced fisherman, so our attempts at trying to land a brook trout or two looked promising.

We took turns trolling and spin casting, coasting along the shorelines, trying to coax some nibbles from the trout. Being out on the lake, away from the bush, with a very light breeze, meant we wouldn’t have to “play bait” for any mosquitos. Visions of battles with brookies danced through our heads. Even if we didn’t catch any, we’d be able to tell “fish tales” about the “ones that got away.”

The park boasts more than 1,500 lakes and 745 miles of streams with as many as 54 recorded different species of fish.

Fish or no fish, the experience helps create more memories of good times in the wilderness of Algonquin.

All too soon, it was time to paddle back to shore and the portage trailhead, pack up the gear, and hike back to Opeongo, before making the short 15-minute paddle across the lake to Algonquin Outfitters to turn in the canoes and other gear.

As we headed back down the portage trail, we realized that while the fish weren’t biting, at least the mosquitos still were – much to our dismay.

It certainly seemed like we would not be contributing to any overfishing on that day. There were four canoes in our group, but try as we might, only one or two of them got any-

thing resembling a nibble.

Darcy and I were oh-forthe-day in our canoe.

But anyone who loves to spend time in the outdoors knows that even if the fish are not biting, there are still many other ways to enjoy the experience, to take something away – even if it’s not a fish.

We could soak up the sunshine and listen to the silence, silence broken only by the occasional gust of wind through the trees, or the call of a pair of loons that floated along beside our canoes for a short while. Their laughlike calls made me wonder if they were amused by our lack of success, and chortling at our expense. Do loons tell “fisherman” stories to their loon pals, like humans tell “fish stories?”

I could just see it...a flock of loons gathering round on the lake after we’d left, “Yeah, you shoulda seen these humans, they couldn’t catch a trout if their lives depended on it!”

Creative process can help lower stress and anxiety, be a way to connect with ourselves and others

Ever heard the saying, “art is good for the soul?”

Facing medical issues involves far more than managing physical issues.

From stress and anxiety, trauma from abuse or post-traumatic stress disorder, transitional life changes, grieving the loss of a loved one, or coping with a medical diagnosis, making art can have a lasting therapeutic effect both emotionally and physically. The creative process can help lower stress and anxiety, help us feel more relaxed, be a way to con-

nect with ourselves and others, explore deep emotional issues, overcome negative thoughts, verbalize our fears, resolve emotional conflict, purge guilt, or reconcile restlessness and resentment. Visual art, music, dance, and writing are all vehicles for selfreflection and healing.

Research shows that creative activity has the capacity to not only improve cognitive functions, problem solving abilities, and memory functions, it significantly reduces the use of medications, as well as symptoms of pain, tiredness, depression, lack of appetite, and improves overall wellbeing and quality of life.

Furthermore, using art as a form of therapy has proven to be an effective tool to empower patients, help cope with medical, mental and physical challenges, provide respite care to caregivers, and strengthen and rejuvenate the body, mind and

spirit. Whether it is using photography and creative writing to ease treatment for cancer patients, mindfulness-based art therapy or meditative practices to treat chronic pain sufferers, or the use of painting, music, movement and dance with Alzheimer’s patients, healing through creativity are just some of the ways art is being used therapeutically. Art also plays a role in the health of a community: murals and sculptures are becoming standard in hospital rooms and care facilities to alleviate fears and anxieties; roadside memorials are increasingly being used to commemorate loved ones; public art installations are a popular way to highlight social justice issues, and add beauty to public spaces, and display community pride.

Olympians ready for the world Delta athletes competing in rowing, field hockey & swimming competitions So what would have the odds been five years ago to suggest a pair of South Delta rowers would not only be going to the Olympic Games but end up competing in the same shell as well?

It’s an accomplishment we may never see again in this community. Brendan Hodge and Maxwell Lattimer will be doing just that for Canada when the lightweight fours event gets underway on Saturday at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio. The pair are at different stages of their careers.

Hodge, 31, put his law career on hold when he returned from an eight-year hiatus to chase his Olympic dream.

Lattimer, Mark Pearson 23, got his first taste of rowing 10 years ago at Vancouver College and has been on the fast track since to earn national team status. Joining Ontario’s Markus Thormeyer Nicolas Pratt and Eric Woelfl, the “Northern Lights” crew won gold at last summer’s Pan Am Games, then qualified for Rio in dramatic fashion by placing 11th overall at the World Championships, securing the final spot.

Lattimer described the latter accomplishment as the “most stressful” racing experience of his life as three years of training came

Thormeyer is ahead of schedule as one of Canada’s top up-andcoming swimmers. At just 18, this could be the first of three Olympics for the former Winskill Dolphin star.

Pioneers bow out to defending champions in WCSLA semi-finals

The lacrosse season is over for the Ladner Pioneers following an 11-9 overtime home loss to the Nanaimo Timbermen.

The defending provincial champs from Vancouver Island

won the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association (WCSLA) semifinal series 3-1 and advance to play the top seeded Langley Warriors.

Ladner struggled to find any

early momentum in game four, falling behind 5-1 after the first period and trailed 7-2 in the second before they found their legs.

In game three 24 hours earlier at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, the

Timbermen capitalized on a three-goal second period to pick up a 6-3 win.

Ladner couldn’t muster much offensively for most of the night and was outshot 43-37.

Islanders can win 1st title Sunday at Sungod

Delta stuns undefeated Coquitlam with 9-6 win Wednesday to open up best-of-three championship series MARK BOOTH

The Delta Islanders can win their firstever B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship on Sunday at Sungod Arena.

The Islanders set the stage for the biggest home game of their 14-year history by stunning the Coquitlam Adanacs with a 9-6 game one road win on Wednesday night to open the best-of-three series.

It was the seven-time defending champions’ first loss in 26 games this season and Delta’s first win over the Adanacs since game two of the 2012 championship series — a span of 20 games.

The Islanders are asking the Delta lacrosse community to come out in big numbers for game two (5 p.m.) and help provide home floor advantage at the North Delta venue. The Ladner Leisure Centre is now unavailable due to ice installation.

Regardless of the result, it will also be Delta’s final home game of what has become a historic season. The league shortened the usual best-of-7 final series down to a three-game affair since both teams are already assured berths in the upcoming Minto Cup national championships at the Langley Events Centre, starting Aug. 19.

Islanders coach Greg Rennie earlier

stated the importance of his team “stealing” game one if it was going to pull off a major upset and his players responded with a huge performance.

Delta jumped out to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes on goals by Jon Phillips, Evan Messenger, Javier Tudela and Nate Wade.

The Adanacs answered with a big second period — peppering 27 shots at goalie Kevin Orleman and eventually tying the game at 5-5.

It was the Islanders’ turn to re-gain momentum in the third and Phillips’ second goal of the night with 8:47 left did just that. It proved to be the game winner with Intermediate call-up Liam MacDonald and Messenger adding insurance goals. Cam Milligan had opened the third period scoring.

Delta received another spectacular performance in net from Orleman who finished the night with a remarkable 52-saves. The Ontario star, who was acquired at the league trading deadline along with Milligan from back east, was also the difference maker in the Islanders’ six-game semi-final series win over New West that locked up the Minto Cup berth.

Boxla Bits…

Aidan Milburn and Jayden Campbell each chipped in with two assists. Tyrell Hamer-Jackson continues to be big on face-offs, winning 12 of 17 draws.

ROBERTS, Jennifer Louise (nee Cornelius) August 29, 1973 - August 3, 2016 Jennifer Louise Roberts (nee Cornelius) born August 29, 1973 went home to heaven after a courageous battle with cancer on August 3, 2016 in Delta, BC. Predeceased by her mother Carole; Jennie is lovingly remembered by her husband Greg of 16 years, her daughters Chloe and Audrey, and her son Luke, father Ron, sister Allison (Russ); mother in law Gaye; father in law David (Marilyn); brother in law Glen (Adele); nieces, nephews, close relatives and many good friends.

But in all seriousness; she was a great wife and partner, a wonderful person, and a loyal friend.

Heidi is forever grateful for the love and support of her father Tore, Moe, Michelle, Marty and for the people in her life that stood by her and a few family members. Re-connecting with her brother made a positive impact during the final stages of her life.

Heidi’s last wish for the people in her life is to be kind, helpful and love each other.

In lieu of flowers, Heidi has asked that you make a donation to SAINTS (Senior Animals In Need Today Society) in Mission, BC. Family and Friends of Heidi would like to thank the Fraser Health Palliative Home Care staff and the Irene Thomas Hospice for the wonderful comfort, support and care they provided.

She was made of strong Norwegian stock; Tromso, Norway to be exact. Daughter of Tore Hansen, a long time Ladner resident. She was married to the greatest guy but she was too much woman for one man. She publicly says she isn’t a Stompin Tom fan yet privately her toe(s) have been noted to tap in tune to a few of her favourite Stompin Tom songs.

She made a hell of a Swedish dish called pault even though she was Norwegian. She loved with everything she had: but could dislike just as strongly.

Animals were her favourite. She had many animals over her short life time and I would challenge anyone to suggest that their pets were better cared for and loved more than Heidi’s. She was a Care Aid and Community Mental Health Worker. She was a buxomly blonde minus the bosom. Her humour was twisted at times just like her back.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sheila Buntain, surrounded by her family, after a hard fought, year-long battle with cancer.

Predeceased by her parents Jack & Annie, Sheila is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Robert, daughter Marianne (Rich), son Mike (Trenna), Thea, four grandchildren (Kelton, Larissa, Bradley, and Alyssa) and brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Nancy Buntain. An outgoing and generous person with a great sense of humour, Sheila also leaves behind many good friends.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 10:00 am at the South Delta Baptist Church 1988 56th Street, Delta, BC. A private burial will follow.

NORGREN, Heidi Marta (Nee Hansen) September 12, 1963 - July 29, 2016 Heidi would like to let you know her work here is done. She is in a place of no pain, restrictions or dysfunction. She received a call for an offer she couldn’t refuse, for an appointment from which she could not cancel. The appointment comes with a huge bonus, a reunion with her beloved pets, family and friends she has not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be running with the dogs in the fields (gum boots on), keeping the cats away from the baby rabbits, gardening and eating everything and anything she wants. Music, laughter, happiness and love are guaranteed.

TREPANIER, “Tess” Passed away July 31, 2016 after a long struggle with Lung Disease.

Survived by her loving husband Ron of 60 years, children Gary (Linda), Lorene (Trevor), Janice (Kerry), Dave (Katherine), Geoff (Colleen), grandchildren DJ, Sherie, Amy, Ben, Anna, Julie, Maggie, Owen, Olivia and Chloe and three great-grandchildren.

Tess was born on January 3, 1935 in Edmonton, Alberta. She was the 4th child of James Gordon Fleming and Bridget Ellen Fleming. Sadly, all four of Tess’s siblings predeceased her early in their lives.

In January 1956 Tess married Ron in Edmonton.

Children followed and she quickly became a devoted mother making a wonderful warm home often with limited resources. She faithfully followed her husband Ron pursuing his career across the country raising their children in several locations.

Tess was always active in her Church with multiple volunteer initiatives. She had many friends, some lifelong.

We will miss her dearly.

Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 11:00 am at Sacred Heart Church, 3900 Arthur Drive, Ladner, BC with a reception to follow.

LYLE, David Henderson David passed away peacefully on July 25th at Kin Village nursing home. David was born to Isaac and Margaret Lyle on October 17, 1939 in London, England.

He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne, daughters Jane Lyle-Mitchell (Kevin) and Jenny Lyle-Heuberger (Jamie), grandchildren Sean, Callum, and Gavin; brothers Jim (Jan), Peter, and Ian (Leslie); and nieces and nephews in England.

David grew up in England and emigrated to Canada after his marriage to Yvonne in 1964. David and Yvonne spent their early years in Ontario where their daughters were born, then later moved and settled their family in Delta, B.C. David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. In his younger years he enjoyed playing soccer and coaching his daughters’ soccer teams. He also made many great friends playing badminton and playing tennis at the Tsawwassen Tennis Club.

David and Yvonne have developed a strong support system of friends. Their friends’ continual and attentive support have been invaluable over the years. His family wishes to thank the staff at Kin Village for their kindness and care during the past year and a half. Many thanks to Dr. Rex Long for caring for David during his life here in Delta.
