Cars and quilts set to fill Ladner Village
Presented by the Ladner Business Association, the 12th annual Quilt Walk and Car Show will draw thousands to Ladner Village Sunday to check out vintage cars and colourful quilts. The show runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 400 classic and vintage cars and motorcycles are expected to line the streets, while the quilt portion promises to be bigger and better. The show will also feature perfor“Everything has been going very well,” said Steven Lan, Delta’s director of engineering. “We are doing the section right to Trenant Street at this stage. The sidewalks are in. They will be pouring the parking pockets and we anticipate paving this Saturday. The area will be ready to go for
mances by the Lounge Hounds from Chilliwack and the 17-piece Deep Cove Big Band. The popular Pin-Up Pageant is back for a second year. There will also be a pancake breakfast and afternoon barbecue at the Ladner Legion, a craft beer garden in the parking lot of Sharkey’s, a variety of food trucks and a selection of automotivethemed vendors.

received very positive feedback from the business owners,” he added. Andrea Frustaci, president of the Ladner Business Association, said the group is pretty ramped up about the project. “It’s looking good. They are doing a really good job,” Frustaci said. “We are

hopeful buyers who are camping out until the units go on sale Saturday. They’re waiting for the first phase of Polygon’s Fairwinds development, which will be part of the new Hampton Cove neighbourhood. Melissa McWilliams noted better price and selection were two reasons why she’s camping out. She said she’s been there since Monday. Tony Klymchuk, another one of those waiting, said he’s there for his son. Around a dozen people have been waiting since
Monday. That number had reached close to 20 as of yesterday. Polygon describes Fairwinds as a seasideinspired community of 147 townhomes and notes the three- and four-bedroom homes are laid out with efficiency and style. It was reported the first phase will consist of 36 units. They go on sale Saturday at noon. Polygon’s now sold-out Charterhouse development, also part of the Hampton Cove neighbourhood, caused buyers to camp out earlier this year.

Hydro chooses overhead line through Deas Island DAVE WILLIS

B.C. Hydro has chosen an overhead transmission line crossing the Fraser River to relocate an existing line from the George Massey Tunnel. The tunnel is scheduled to be decommissioned when it’s replaced by a 10-lane bridge in 2022. “Really, the key reason we chose this alternative is it offers the highest level of reliability and safety so we can continue to reliably serve the customers in this service area,” said project manager Navreet Kooner, noting the decision was reached last week. Deas Island Regional Park would be home to the overhead line on the Delta side of the river. The plan would require two steel lattice towers, approximately 120 metres in height (approximately half the height of the bridge), to support the overhead line crossing the river. One transmission tower would be located on Deas Island and the
other in Richmond. A second, smaller steel lattice tower, approximately 75 metres in height, would also be required on Deas Island. All towers would be located to the west of the bridge. Kooner said the overhead option has the lowest construction risk, has low environmental impact, is the most cost efficient to build and has the longest in-service life of the other options B.C. Hydro considered. Other alternatives included an underground transmission line running under the Fraser River or a transmission line located on the bridge itself. Kooner said B.C. Hydro would like to start site preparation activities this fall but noted it doesn’t have a detailed construction schedule yet. The Metro Vancouver website says Deas Island Regional Park is “a great place for a picnic, a quiet walk or a paddle along the slough” and that the area is home to a variety of wildlife.

Bridge open house draws 100-plus Attendees at session in Ladner this week generally supportive of plan for 10-lane crossing IAN JACQUES

An open house at the Delta Town & Country Inn Wednesday included three models of the proposed bridge. “What we are seeing is similar to previous consultations, which is lots of support for the project, lots of questions about the specifics, what is going to change, how will I be affected as a resident or as a business owner. “We certainly have some folks here today who are here with some concerns
and they are not in favour, but overall, it pretty much is what we have seen so far, which is generally supportive.” Project assessment manager Michael Shepard said they want to be fully engaged with the public and encouraged those who can’t make it out to an open house to submit
their comments in writing. “We read through every comment on the website and take each comment very seriously. Everyone has a different perspective,” he said. “It’s a very detailed and technical process, but it should be for a project of this nature. We have to make sure we do our due diligence and
leave no stone unturned.” One Ladner resident told the Optimist he is in favour of the project as long as the toll isn’t off the charts. “I’m old enough to remember the tolling on the Deas Tunnel, the Lions Gate Bridge and we all survived,” he said. “The good thing about this is

The first of three public open houses for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project drew 139 people to the Delta Town & Country Inn Wednesday. The province recently submitted an application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) for an environmental certificate for a 10-lane, 3.3-kilometre bridge across the Fraser River. An application review period of up to 180 days is now underway, which includes a 60-day public comment period from Aug. 3 to Oct. 3. At the open house the public had the opportunity to review a number of information boards for each of the components that have been studied and to take a look at three models. “It’s a pretty good turnout. People are asking a lot of questions and getting engaged in the process,” said Pam Ryan, director of planning for the project.
you won’t have people idling in vehicles for hours on end. Access will be improved, and the noise will be less because it will be elevated, so it’s all plusses.” MLA Vicki Huntington was also on hand, saying it is vitally important the public is involved. “I see my job now, given the decision to proceed with a bridge appears to be made by the province, is to make sure what they promised Delta we get, that the impacts of construction are minimal, that it services the people of Delta properly and well and that the community is better in the long run for it rather than without it.” The next open house is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Richmond with a third open house on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at the Delta Town & Country Inn. All sessions run from 2 to 8 p.m. Construction of the $3.5-billion bridge is to begin next year and be complete by 2022.

t’s comforting to know they’re there when you need them. Every June I make my way to municipal hall to pay a property tax bill that grows a little larger each year. Monthly installments make the transaction less painful, but I always leave the White House thinking I don’t get great bang for my buck. Sure, we use the roads and recreation facilities, and get garbage and more picked up every week, but rarely, if ever, do we come into contact with a host of civic services we’ve been helping finance for decades. We simply haven’t had a need for a police officer or an engineering crew -- at least we hadn’t until this summer. A month or so ago on a sunny Wednesday afternoon, I walked home for lunch only to find an intruder in our master bedroom. He had broken a window and was in the process of ransacking the place when I interrupted him, causing him to flee out the window he had entered. I have to say the ensuing police response was outstanding. I was still on the phone with 911 when the first officer arrived, who was soon followed by more patrol units, a dog squad and the identification guys. I know all about the department’s “no call too small” policy, but to see it in action was quite something. And then last Monday night as I was taking the garbage to the curb, I noticed a puddle on the front lawn. Given we had the water line from the street to the house replaced after a leak last month (yes, it’s been a good summer!), we figured something had gone wrong with that job. When we contacted the plumber the next morning, he didn’t think it was his doing and told us to phone the municipality, which sent over a crew within an hour. The affable guys determined it was indeed on their side, shut off the water and told me they’d be back as soon as they could. I warily inquired as to how long that might be, so I was pleasantly surprised when they returned the very next morning to finish the job. We even had a supervisor show up at our door at 6:30 p.m. to ensure all was well. In a certain respect, municipal services are like insurance — you don’t fully appreciate them until you’re in a pickle and really need them. Something tells me I won’t mind paying my property taxes quite so much next June.
People power is required to keep port appetite in check
T
here have been many articles and letters about Deltaport and the Port of Vancouver expanding in South
Delta. At this time there is an environmental assessment being undertaken on an application for a second container terminal. The Port Improvement Program seeks to double the capacity of the container port. If it proceeds, there will be a need for substantial land for storage and transfer of goods. This land will have to come out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). Several local citizens, under the banner of Against Port Expansion (http://www.againstportexpansion.org/ ) have questioned the need for this as they assert that much of the expansion — if real — is to service the United States, which is now embroiled in a presidential election where one candidate threatens to reduce imports to the U.S. Business Week, an international magazine with a circulation of one million, has presented an interesting analysis of the situation. It reports the “container traffic is expected to double over

the next 15 years.” They are told the port “may run out of industrial land within 10 years.” Having sold off much of their land in downtown such as Coal Harbour for highrise condos, “the port plans to head 22 miles south to expand.” Read South Delta. In addition to the offshore artificial island called T2, it will “need to be serviced by warehouses and distribution centres on land with good access to water, rail lines, and roads if the port and regional economy are to remain competitive.” The port is a federal agency and so has legislative expropriation powers to overturn Delta and B.C. laws (such as ALR) in its thirst for land. Correspondence
some time ago between our mayor and the minister of transport in the Harper government left one wondering if the port is accountable to anyone in the federal government. Many hoped that with the change in government and accountability that the wishes of the local folks (us) would be considered by the federal government. A number of entreaties have been made to our MP, Carla Qualtrough, so we now wait to see if our lifestyle is to be bargained away for the commercial interests of the railways and international firms wanting to import goods to North America. Make no mistake, much time, effort and money is being spent to convince politicians to allow South Delta to be transformed into a massive industrial zone. Earlier reports have chronicled that options to purchase have been taken out on much of the farm land (ALR) between Ladner and Tsawwassen. You and I have only “people power” to ensure that what happens is fair, reasonable and not terribly short-sighted. Ian Robertson has been a resident of South Delta for three decades.

Port calls for protection of trade-enabling land
Editor: Re: Gov’t silent on threat to Delta farmland, Aug. 12 Vicki Huntington’s opinion piece contains incorrect statements about the port authority’s position on agricultural land. The assertion the port authority is planning to purchase 2,300 acres of farmland is untrue. A study identified 2,500 acres as the amount of industrial land needed to handle trade through Canada’s west coast for the foreseeable future, but it has never been the intent of the port authority to secure that land base through our own purchases, nor have we said it should be sourced through the conversion of agricultural land. We live in a region where available land is scarce, whether for
residential, agricultural or employment development. What land remains for trade-related businesses in the Lower Mainland (about 1,000 acres) will run out in about 10 years. The land is needed not for port operations but for warehouses and distribution centres. Logistics businesses and industrial developers will use what remains of the region’s industrial land base before they are forced to move outside the Lower Mainland or explore other alternatives. The port authority is not involved in the decisions made by these businesses. We are calling for the protection of what’s left of trade-enabling industrial land because it is being converted to other uses at an alarming rate. We are also advocating for a more

Forcing goods move-

Community Power proposal, which calls for postal banking, services for seniors and coast-tocoast charging stations for electric cars, among other ideas. Big picture facts about Canada Post: • Canada Post is the country’s largest retail and logistics network, and as a Crown Corporation, all of us own it. • Contrary to popular belief, our postal service is profitable, and has been for most of the past two

decades. Why should we adopt postal banking? • Canada’s big banks took in $35 billion in profits last year while cutting jobs and raising service fees at the same time. • Many communities across Canada have post offices, but no bank branches. A postal bank is an affordable, local solution that can also invest in the community. • Dozens of countries around the world, including New Zealand, France
and Italy, have profitable and successful postal banking services. There’s no reason why we can’t too. to industrial land we also own and is currently farmed under long-term leases. We have no plans to convert it at this time, but should that change, we would consult with the Agricultural Land Commission and other stakeholders to find mutually beneficial solutions and ensure we appropriately mitigate for any lost productivity. Quiet community should get set for more pollution
Editor: Re: New environmental regs for container trucks, Aug. 12 As Dana Carvey would say, “Well, isn’t that special.” Not only are we getting mega malls bringing us light pollution, exhaust pollution (from the thousands of expected vehicles), traffic congestion and noise pollution, but now our provincial government is going to
lease 10 acres of agricultural land to be paved over and used as a commercial vehicle safety and enforcement facility, complete with 40 truck parking spaces and queuing for up to 140 trucks. More light pollution, exhaust pollution (diesel) and noise pollution. Isn’t this going to be a nice addition to our previously quiet agricultural community? B. Turriff

A $10 bet to see if he could get a vendor booth at the PNE has turned into 50 years of memories — and thousands of servings of perogies — for Hunky Bill’s and Bill Konyk. The iconic Hunky Bill’s Ukrainian Food stand will open tomorrow at The Fair at the PNE (Aug. 20 to Sept. 5) as Konyk marks half a century at the Vancouver institution. “It’s been an amazing experience, that’s for sure,” said Konyk. “So many memories. It’s the people — the people that I have met that support me and we support them.” Konyk was born and raised in Winnipeg. He moved to Vancouver with his wife and children in 1966 to join CJOR radio station. He recalls barbecuing in his backyard in Vancouver in 1967 when he got the
idea to introduce his family’s famous Winnipeg garlic sausage and perogies to his friends and business associates. “So here I am barbecuing hot dogs and one of my boys bites into the wiener and then spits it out and yells out how terrible it tasted. I gave him a little whack on the head and he tells me to give it a try. Well, he wasn’t wrong — it was awful,” Konyk said. “I called up my brother and told him to send me out some wieners, sausage and some perogies too. In a space of a few months, I was making some serious money in the food business.” A few months later, while having drinks at the old Ritz Hotel in Vancouver, a friend made him a $10 bet that he couldn’t get a booth at the PNE. “I had no clue what the PNE was, but he told me and I said what did I have

UPDATE - 2016 SUMMER RUNWAY OPERATIONS RESA PROJECT AND SOUTH RUNWAY MAINTENANCE Due to the poor weather conditions experienced in June and early July, the Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) project and the annual runway maintenance program have been extended two weeks—from September 2, 2016 to September 17, 2016. During this time, the North Runway will continue to be used to accommodate all take-offs and landings six nights a week (Sun-Fri) between the hours of 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Up-to-date information about the closures will be available at www.yvr.ca/updates. to lose. I went down to the PNE and was in there for two hours and they kept saying no. Finally I said listen, I’m here from Winnipeg introducing something new and that this would be a real novelty. Finally I got a booth. “The first year we did $5,400 in 14 days. We didn’t know what we were doing, but we survived, made a few dollars and the rest is history.” Over the years he has become a staple at the summer fair, owned a successful restaurant and catering business, and launched his worldwide success story —Hunky Bill’s Perogie Maker. Konyk and his wife moved from Richmond to Ladner a little over three years ago. They immediately fell in love with the community and its people. He had a bit of a health scare the first month they were in Ladner and received such good care at Delta Hospital he went into the administration to thank them, offered a donation and has been
helping out the hospital ever since. “It’s a great hospital — great bunch of people, so I’m happy to help out wherever I can,” he said. “I haven’t done it yet, but I want to get in on the Ladner Village Market. My idea is to sell bags of perogies and such with a big chunk of the proceeds going to support the hospital. We like it. It’s a real nice community.” To mark his 50th anniversary, he plans to give out 50 prizes a day at the PNE. Prizes will include commemorative T-shirts and pens, free meals and bags of perogies that fairgoers can take home to enjoy. “We’re not going to have any ballots, it’s just going to be at random. We’re going to have some fun,” he said. “The PNE has been great. I want to thank them for letting me in for all these years. I would hate to see anything happen to it. For what it is, it will stand on its own for any event in Canada.”

Delta council approved a funding request from the Ladner Business Association for its #DiscoverLadner initiative Monday. The LBA had asked for $2,500 towards the costs of boosting ads on Facebook to promote the campaign.
“The initiative profiles locally owned businesses, encourages people to support these businesses by buying local, and promotes Ladner as a tourism destination,” a report to council notes. It adds the initiative is in line with the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy action plan. The report also included
a letter to mayor and council from LBA president Andrea Frustaci. The initiative is carried out through Facebook ads, boosted posts, Instagram posts and a blog section on the LBA website, Frustaci explains in the letter. “The primary purpose of this campaign is to feature the many of our mem-

ElectroRecycle comes to Delta markets on weekend
Learn about a Lower Mainland not-for-profit while also getting rid of some clutter in your home at a pair of upcoming farmers’ markets. ElectroRecycle is a small appliance and power toolrecycling program, which recycles more than 300 products at 197 depots around the province.
At farmers markets such as the Tsawwassen Farmers Market today and the North Delta Farmers Market on Sunday, their goals are twofold: to educate consumers about the program and let them know where the nearest depots are, and to provide a free collection service for anyone who wishes
to bring them their small appliances or power tools to be recycled. It is this latter point that ElectroRecycle tries to emphasize, as it is a great opportunity for people to get rid of clutter and get involved in the program. The Tsawwassen Farmers Market runs from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the
corner of 12th Avenue and 53A Street. The North Delta Farmers Market runs Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the North Delta Recreation Centre. To find out what ElectroRecycle accepts or for more information check out: www.electrorecycle.ca.

She is social with some dogs but can be dog selective so would do best as the only dog in the home. Molly shouldn’t go to a home with cats or small animals as she is too interested in them. August 19, 2016 The Delta Optimist A13 curbside recycling, have sharply reduced the amount of trash that ends up in the landfill, although the closure date remains unchanged. A phased closure plan is already well underway, starting with the most eastern section of the landfill, a 14-hectare (35-acre) area called Phase 1, which reached capacity in 2006 at a maximum filling height of 39 metres (128 feet). Due to settlement occurring, additional waste was placed on the section before it was declared completely full. The area was then covered with a plastic membrane and soil. Eighteen additional gas collection wells as well as flares were also installed. The idea is to eventually have the entire landfill covered and looking like a natural area once more, at least on the surface. Vancouver’s 2015 annual report on the landfill notes it’s authorized to accept up to 750,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste for disposal each year. In 2015, 382,711 tonnes of municipal solid waste and 124,044 tonnes of demolition waste were accepted for a total of 506,755 tonnes, well below the authorized limit. Some of the other waste currently accepted includes drinking water treatment plant residuals from the Seymour Capilano Filtration Plant, a total of 7,050 tonnes of asbestos waste from commercial and residential customers, 124,044 tonnes of demolition material, thousands of tonnes of grit, sludge and scum screenings, as well as excavation material generated by sewer, water and street construction, while bottom ash from the Burnaby waste incinerator facility is also stockpiled. Vancouver recently commissioned a study to look at the composition of demolition and construction waste with the goal of finding opportunities to recover and recycle components. Vancouver has operated a landfill gas collection and flare system since 1991. The system was initially installed to control odour and had the added benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, landfill gas is extracted by 339 vertical wells and 25 horizontal collectors and used to generate electricity for sale to B.C. Hydro and heat for the nearby Village
Farms greenhouse. A small portion is also used to heat the landfill administration buildings. Excess gas is burned by on-site flares to minimize greenhouse gas emissions. Approximately 60 million cubic metres of landfill gas were collected and destroyed in 2015, which is equivalent to
spent on landfill gas collection and progressive closure works. The current capital plan for closure and other associated work over the next three years is $42 million, however, there is still a large quantity of methane that’s not collected, equating to 206,048 tonnes of carbon dioxide or approximately

Five years ago, Delta and Vancouver established a technical liaison committee in response to concerns regarding those gas emissions. The committee was recently told that for March 2016, overall landfill gas collection efficiency was 69 per cent. The overall efficiency for 2015 was 71 per cent, a significant improvement from the 47 per cent efficiency in 2010. For 2016, additional landfill gas collection infrastructure will be installed with the goal of meeting a target of 75 per cent. Since 2010, approximately $48 million has been

Not around when it originally opened, mainly because waste diversion and recycling weren’t issues at that time, there’s also an on-site transfer station that offers recycling for large items not typically included in curbside collection programs, such as mattresses, drywall, scrap metal, white goods, batteries, tires and more. Vancouver also expanded the collection to include all forms of packaging and printed paper covered by a new provincial stewardship program. the lookout for “Godsightings” — ordinary encounters and everyday occurrences that often go unnoticed but that reveal the nature of God. We all sometimes need to be reminded that God is here with us and within us, loving us, guiding us, sustaining us. So this weekend and coming week, be on the lookout for God at work — in the garden, at the water park, on the golf course, at the dinner table — because as St. Augustine declares, “There is nothing that cannot become a sacramental encounter.” And then share your “God-sighting” with a friend, neighbour or family member. Who knows, you may be the symbol or sacrament of God’s presence they have been hungering for.

Last Wednesday we held our midweek communion service and lunch outdoors at a member’s home rather than in the church building. We gathered under the shade of a giant cedar tree rather than a church steeple. We sat on folding chairs rather than wooden pews and were surrounded by apple trees and fig trees rather than stained glass windows. And as we prayed and sang to the strums of a guitar rather than the pipes of an organ, an ordinary backyard was transformed into a sanctuary. While we naturally think of churches as places of encounter with the divine, we know that the all-powerful and all-present God is not held captive by the walls of a church building. St. Augustine said, “If

Animal Expo goes Sunday
Eighth annual event features a host of fun activities in Ladner’s Memorial Park DAVE WILLIS

adner’s Memorial Park will be teeming with critters and furry friends Sunday thanks to the eighth annual Delta Community Animal Expo. The fun, family event, set to start at 10 a.m., is shaping up really well, says Delta Community Animal Shelter manager Sarah Jones. “We’re super excited for this year. Every year it seems to get better and better,” she says. She notes the very first year there were 18 exhibitors and now there’s a waitlist for spots. This time around there will be over 60, she says, noting they range from not-for-profit animal adoption organizations, to advocacy groups, sanctuary or rescue groups to businesses that support pet ownership. The expo also offers lots of activities and demos. “We have a bunch of new things this year,” says Jones. One of those is a “Build a Doghouse Challenge,” which is presented in partnership with the Lakes Animal Friendship Society. Competitors will race to finish putting together doghouse kits while there will be crowd favourite voting and also a “Pup’s Pick” where a special canine judge will choose his favourite doghouse. The finished doghouses will then be auctioned off. The challenge starts at 11 a.m. Also new this year is a lure course which costs $10 to try out. “Basically, their dogs become agility stars,” says Jones. There will be agility equipment set up including tunnels, jumps and corners where dogs chase a line, typically with a bag on the end of it. “Any dog you’d think wouldn’t do it, does it. It’s amazing.” B.C. Guide Dogs is also setting up a guided walk where participants are blindfolded and walked through a maze with dogsin-training.

Simba the Great, a domestic short hair cat, poses for a picture at the Delta Community Animal Shelter earlier this week. The shelter will put on the annual Delta Community Animal Expo at Memorial Park in Ladner Sunday. There is a packed schedule at the expo’s Tollie Fund Activity Arena with demonstrations, games and a first aid class at the end of the day.
Expo favourites like the rabbit agility event are also returning, she adds. Jones says she appreciates local sponsors and businesses who’ve been
very generous with their support. The expo runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Memorial Park, 5010-47th Ave., Ladner.
FILE PHOTO
The “Bob for Wieners” game will be at the Tollie Fund Activity Arena again this year as part of the fun at the animal expo.
Guests are encouraged to pick up an “expo passport” information pamphlet/map at the event. “There’s tons of stuff going on, so it’s really important that people get the passport when they come.” Anyone posting pictures to social media is also encouraged to use the hashtag #DeltaAnimalExpo. Proceeds go towards the local shelter’s Tollie Fund. “This fund allows the shelter to provide veterinarian assistance, behaviour rehabilitation or other types of support to help Delta’s abandoned animals have a chance at a healthy adoption,” explains the event’s Facebook page. Checking out view from top of Chief Boomers savour reward on Squamish hike JANE CASSIE
Optimist contributor
The Sea to Sky Highway has always been one of my favourite drives. Whenever we head up Whistler way, I love to check out the sites: the seascape and inkyblue backdrop of Howe Sound, Britannia Mine Museum and the coloured spots that inch their way up the Stawamus Chief. At least that’s what they look like from the base of this sheer granite slab that soars 610 metres (2,000 feet) skyward, just outside Squamish. With my face pressed against the window and head cranked mountainside, I strain to catch a glimpse of the rock-hugging daredevils as we whiz on by. Like gravity-defying ants, they scale the vertical rise, a challenge conquerable only by the boldest and buffest. So, it comes as a total shock when my husband suggests we choose the Chief for our next hike. What’s he even thinking about? Sure, we might be on the same playing field as other active boomers, but this adrenaline-secreting ascent is totally out of our league. I’m about to tell him he’s crazy, when he pulls out a map of an alternate way up. “This back door route offers the same view and without the grunt work,” he reassures. But when it comes time for the big climb, I discover this so-called grunt work comes in varying degrees. Although nothing comparable to the nimble rock climbers, it’s as close to a natural Stairmaster as I’ll ever get. One access to the trailhead can be found at Stawamus Chief Provincial Park. There are even a few graveled camp sites here for those that wish to do an overnighter. But we veer off the highway a little sooner and begin our trek from Shannon Falls. It’s a wee bit longer but the brief detour to check out this 330-metre cascade is worth the extra wear and tear on our Timberlands. From here, our dirt trail does an about face, cleaves through a grove of second

The Sea to Sky rims the ocean shore far below. growth stands, crosses the trickling Olesen Creek and eventually unites with the other upward route. Then our 45-minute step class begins. If you love the heartthumping Grouse Grind, this hike will be right up your alley. Strategicallyspaced log treads, etched into the mountainside, soar upwards like a stairway to heaven. Though the footing is made easier, my pulse continually pounds and beads of sweat cool my brow. Families with kids of all ages fall into line — and like our tag-along schnauzer, many pass on our left at a much perkier pace than mine. But it really doesn’t matter. We’re here to connect with nature, get in touch with the great outdoors and be rewarded with a view. After a lot of huffing and puffing, we come to a junction where there’s a fork on our footpath. Left will take us to South Peak and right veers to the Centre and North Peaks. Although many adventurers check out all three, the five-hour trek is a little too much for my treads. We opt for the shorter trail to South Peak, a three-and-a-half-hour round trip route that provides a great vista reward. Guardrail ropes border
sections of the steeppitched pathway, ladders wedge between crevices of Jurassic Park-size boulders and chains cling to the slippery slick surfaces. Although I was never a winner of the obstacle race on sports day, as we reach the final ascent, I feel that familiar resurgence of youth-like adrenaline. My boomer muscles magically go into power mode and I take on a new-born confidence. If young tykes and little canines can master this climb, so can I. We soon discover why this granite precipice is so popular. Our panorama expands beyond the miniscule grid of Squamish to the embracing backdrop of snowglazed peaks. In between are the sapphire waters of Howe Sound, industrial landmarks of Woodfibre and Port Mellon and unpopulated mountain valleys. And snaking along the ocean’s edge far below, is a ribbon of asphalt, the scenic Sea to Sky highway that will eventually take us back home. Gallery 1710 presents Celebration show NOREEN FAIRWEATHER
Optimist contributor
South Delta Artists Guild members have put together an intriguing mix of visual art for their new Celebration show and sale, now running at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. The exhibition includes work by many wellknown artists, expressing their thoughts and ideas through watercolours, acrylics, oils, pen and ink, collage, pastel, plus threedimensional wood sculpture. As always, a sense of curiosity and thoughtful exploration have prompted each piece of original art inviting consideration. For example, versatile artist Sharee Reynolds shows five paintings, two of them small quiet landscapes presented in her own collage technique – simple colour and design pleasing to contemplate. Then, the art of Irina and Nicholas Florov, which they have been sharing for more than 20 years, pulses with energy. Nicholas specializes in sculpture and wood

Irina has a charming line
portrait of a woman on show, and Nicholas a hanging wood relief. Expressive artist Sandra Taylor joined the guild shortly after it was formed in 1975, and her great sup-
port for the organization, including several terms as president, was recognized years ago with an honourary membership. A highly-talented and respected artist, her work
to express a thought or pursue an idea always catches the eye with inventive imagery and fascinating colour combinations - and sometimes surprises her, too, when
completed. Taylor has several works in Celebration. Thanks to the continuing hard work of its members, the South Delta Artists Guild (a voluntary society) and its Gallery 1710 are becoming ever more widely known for the opportunities it presents to those interested in visual art, and for the quality of the work presented. Gallery 1710 is open to the public Thursday to Sunday, and the studio/ workshop is used for daily drop-in activities, live drawing sessions, workshops and meetings. However, visitors are always welcome and often enjoy meeting members working in the studio. Celebration runs through Aug. 28, Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices for the works on display are modest. Many guild members show their work online. See more at www.southdeltaartistsguild.com. Gallery 1710 is adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen.

7 little tips that will make big difference
Take action to improve your odds in The Race to Stay Above Ground the Longest
Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
Little changes equal big results. It’s true, trust me. I promise this isn’t some annoying Pinterest motivational quote. It’s actually what I see that works every day with my clients, as well as with myself. You see, it’s the baby steps, from easy-to-implement tips, that win the race. And what race is that, you wonder? Well, it’s what I like to call “The Race to Stay Above Ground the Longest.” (I know, it’s not a catchy title and it’s definitely not
hashtag-able either, but it’s the best I could come up with.) This is a race we are all participating in, and because of this I urge you to implement these seven little changes into your exercise routine so you can start seeing a huge difference in your fitness. 1. Sign up for an event. Nothing breeds motivation like an event. Find an event (like a running race, a triathlon, the GranFondo, a fitness competition), and circle the date on your calendar. From there, as each day passes, mark it with an X so you can see your progress towards that big circle — your big event. By knowing you have a date to be physically ready, as well as seeing each day pass by on the calendar, you will stay Jedi-focused and motivated to keep your butt training. 2. Walk it off after dinner. Possibly the easiest fitness tip I can give you for
your health is to go for a walk after dinner. A 30-minute walk will help you: digest your meal, lower your blood sugar levels and your triglycerides, as well as burn a few calories. 3. Set your alarm 45 to 60 minutes earlier. If I were to pick the perfect time to do a workout, I would have to choose first thing in the morning. You see, we only have so much willpower in our system. This is why you never fail at your diet first thing in the morning. It’s always mid-afternoon to dinner and beyond. We also all have the best intentions to work out, however our days and our lives get the best of us. If you get your workout done in the morning, before life gets in the way and while your willpower is at its all-time strongest, you will increase your chances of maintaining a regular fitness routine immensely. 4. Join a class. Switching up your work-
outs is one of the best ways to see gains in your fitness. It only takes your body about six to eight weeks to adapt to whatever stress you are putting it through. This is why we encourage people to cross-train and to keep increasing the amount of weight they are lifting when in the gym. This is to stop the body from “getting used” to the workouts. And… this is where fitness classes rock. Most fitness classes change their programming often, giving your body (and your muscles) a whole new stimulus to grow with. 5. Do big body moves and forget the ab workout. If you are weight training properly, you will not have to waste time performing a separate abdominal workout. When you perform exercises like squats, lunges, deadlifts, mountain climbers, push-ups, and pull ups you recruit a lot of
You see, it’s the baby steps, from easy-toimplement tips, that win the race. your core to help with that move, as well as to stabilize the spine. Perform your workout correctly, using the above moves, and you will not have to waste your time scheduling in a separate abdominal workout. 6. Combine your cardio and your weights. In a perfect world we would have plenty of time for our cardio and our strength training workout, however our world (and more specifically, our time) is far from perfect, which is why I suggest combining your cardio and weights into what is called a circuit workout. Choose five big mus-
cle strength exercises (ie. chest presses, lat pulldowns, squats), and five higher-energy cardio moves (ie. burpees, jumping jacks, mountain climbers), and alternate between the two for 50 seconds a move, taking only 10 seconds to get to the next exercise. One circuit of 10 moves will take you 10 minutes to complete. Aim for three to five circuits. 7. Give yourself lots of tough love. Tell yourself that you are worth the effort and that you are strong – even though you may not feel it. Don’t acknowledge lack of energy or time as an excuse either. Remember, there are people far busier than you working out… right now. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer who would love to see you in one of her group fitness classes in September. Siblings hosting fundraiser for Autism Support Dogs Youngsters more than halfway to $500 target DAVE WILLIS

A brother and sister in Beach Grove have been busy raising funds for the Autism Support Dogs organization this summer and their latest event takes place Sunday. Theoren Dolejsi, 7, and Harlo, 5, will be accepting donations during their coffee/tea/baked goods fundraiser from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at 5834-16A Ave. The siblings have built their own stand and have done lemonade, drinks, vegetables and bake sales over the summer, raising over $300 of their $500 goal so far. Their mom, Morgan Dolejsi, said she’s “very proud” of them.
They got the idea after seeing kids raising money at Centennial Beach for the victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire. “They thought that was pretty amazing.” Their dad Geof’s aunt and uncle also do a big annual fundraiser (Kitz for Kids) for Autism Support Dogs. It’s expected the group will have a dogin-training at the event Sunday. Dolejsi noted Cantebury Coffee donated the coffee while Bayside Event Rentals donated a coffee urn for the fundraiser. Autism Support Dogs is a division of BC & Alberta Guide Dogs and provides professionally trained dogs to children with autism at no cost to the recipient.

Defender Nick Jensen has been an offensive force for the Delta Islanders en route to their first-ever B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League title.
Islanders unleash new weapons B.C. champs will look for more transition scoring when Minto Cup starts Saturday MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Islanders’ “secret weapons” will be looking to provide further damage when the Minto Cup national junior “A” lacrosse championships get underway on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. The Islanders have suddenly evolved into a team that can be dangerous in transition and that was none more apparent than their biggest win in franchise history. Delta’s 11-10 double overtime triumph over the Coquitlam Adanacs last week produced its first-ever B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship. While usual snipers such as Jon Phillips, Evan Messenger and Cam Milligan were at the top of the scoresheet, the Islanders’ received huge production from defenders Nick Jensen and Adam Jay. It was Jensen’s second goal of the game in sudden-death overtime that ended the thrilling series as he buried a feed from captain Brad Hofmann on a all-defender 3-on-2 break. It was also big night for Jay, who scored twice and chipped in with a timely assist. Jensen enters the Minto Cup with nine points in as many playoff games, including five goals. He had compiled 13 points in 21 regular season
games. Jay’s production is also way up. He has six goals in the post-season, just one less than three months worth of league play. When Jensen was acquired by the Islanders back at the start of the season, he was described as a “big game” player by head coach Greg Rennie. Jensen had played for Rennie in intermediate and with a Canada West team that won a junior world event last summer. It doesn’t get much bigger than scoring the championship clinching goal in overtime. “Rennie had said (during the intermission) he would love to see a defender score the overtime winner and it just fired up the whole D,” said Jensen. “I think it has a lot to do with the new additions, Adam especially. I don’t know what it is but we seem to work really well together. I think we both push ourselves to get up the floor. We were getting killed by Coquitlam earlier in transition and thought we had the opportunity to give it right back to them.” Jay came over to Delta at the league trading deadline from Victoria, along with another third-year defender, Nate Wade. He is thriving in his expanded role after being a stay-at-home d-man with the Shamrocks. “I think they have just given me more confi-
dence to run the ball up the floor,” said Jay. “In Victoria, there were a lot of transition guys who loved to push the ball so it was kind of hard to get the opportunity there. It’s also being in the right place at the right time by getting loose balls and stuff. The more points you get the more confidence you build off of that.” Jay and Wade have continued to live in Victoria since being traded and commuted to the Lower Mainland for practices and games. The memorable run has made it all worth it for the two graduating players. “(The schedule) was at first kind of difficult but Nate being a really good friend of mine definitely has helped,” added Jay. “From day one I have been comfortable playing here. The guys make you feel really welcomed. It’s like you are one big family almost.” Jensen is one of the few players eligible to return next season. Playing for the Islanders is somewhat continuing a family tradition. His dad Glenn and uncles all suited up for the senior B Ladner Pioneers during their playing days. “My dad is kind of old school. He says if there is an opportunity, I should be going to the net every time,” smiled Jensen. “Last year was a tough one for me on an inexperienced team. It’s been awesome coming here.”

Islanders need a fast start in bid to make Minto Cup finals MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a good thing the Delta Islanders have emphasized conditioning all season. All those stair climbs and runs around Delta Hospital are going to help big time for a Minto Cup schedule that could see the B.C. champions play a whopping nine games in 10 days should the tournament go the distance. Here is a look at the Islanders’ three-round robin games as they attempt to advance to the best-of-five final which would start next Thursday. Saturday Aug. 20 8 p.m. vs. Alberta champion Calgary Mountaineers Watch out! If there is a trap game at the championships this is it. With so much focus on the Ontario and B.C. representatives, the Islanders can’t afford to look past what is almost a must win game out of the gate. Although Alberta
teams typically don’t fare well, the competition gap is closing. Last year, the Adanacs had their hands full in a different format when they took on the Okotkos Raiders in a bestof-three series. A win by the Islanders would almost guarantee at least a berth into Tuesday’s sudden death playoff game. Sunday, Aug. 21 8 p.m. vs. Ontario champion Orangeville Northmen The powerhouse Northmen will look to continue Ontario’s dominance at the Minto Cup, having won nine of the last 10 championships. Orangeville is responsible for three of those titles with the last one coming in 2012. The Northmen earned their ticket West by sweeping defending national champions Six Nations in four straight. Offensively, they are led by Adam Charalambides (74 pts, 35 G) and Joel Tinney (65 pts, 23 G). Goaltender Nolan
Clayton was outstanding in the finals against Six Nations. Monday, Aug. 22 8 p.m. vs. B.C. #2 representative Coquitlam Adanacs The Islanders will conclude round-robin play by renewing their rivalry with the Adanacs after last week’s thrilling bestof-three league finals that saw two games decided in overtime. The Adanacs are led by goaltender Christian Del Bianco and Tyler Pace who was outstanding in the finals, including four goals in game three. The outcome of Saturday and Sunday’s games will dictate how these rivals will approach this one. If both happen to come in with 1-1 records, the game could have no impact on the final standings and the teams would be meeting again one night later in a do-or-die playoff game to determine the other Minto Cup finalist.

It is with great pride that we celebrate the life of Jill Elizabeth Foran. A wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend and “nana”, she lived a life surrounded by people who loved and supported her. Born in Sarnia, Ontario, she moved to B.C. in 1990 and raised her family in Ladner. She devoted her life to her family and friends, and supported them in all of their endeavours. Whether travelling across North America to watch her son play baseball, or spending weekends behind stage at dance recitals with her daughter, she was their biggest fan. A loving wife that adored her husband, she was always by his side, as he was for her. Though she will be missed, she will never be forgotten and her legacy will live on through all the lives that she touched.
