Casino poses health risk to community
Bunnies get hoppin’
Fraser Health officials issue warning as Delta awaits word from BCLC SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
There is no simple way to balance the economic benefits of casinos with the risk to the health of individuals and wellbeing of a community. That’s the warning from Fraser Health’s top medical officials as Delta waits for word from the B.C. Lottery Corporation on a gaming facility. In a recent letter to Mayor Lois Jackson, chief medical health officer Victoria Lee and executive medical director Arlene King touched on information available on problem gambling and access to gambling venues, noting a study two years ago found the number of problem gamblers might have declined since 2008, but the proportion of severe gamblers remains a concern. They noted most estimates
of severe problem gambling are at around one per cent of the population. “In its most severe form, problem gambling leads to significant social, physical and emotional health problems, family rupture, legal troubles, crime and even suicide,” they wrote. The medical officials, warning problem gambling like many other health problems is not distributed equally in the population, said most recent data from the Lower Mainland and elsewhere confirms that most gamblers gamble close to home. For example, 85.9 per cent of patrons at the Edgewater Casino in Vancouver come from less than 20 kilometres away, although it is impossible to know in advance what proportion of patrons will come from a local area should a new gambling facility be approved. LBA looks to light up Ladner
Business association launches gofundme campaign in bid to raise $30,000 IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The Ladner Business Association (LBA) wants to light up the downtown core, but it needs some help to flip on the switch. The LBA recently launched a Let’s Light up Ladner Village gofundme campaign with the goal of raising $30,000 for the project. “Imagine our Ladner Village, in conjunction with the beautification of Delta Street, lit up all winter long? Imagine the streets alive with musicians entertaining as you walk our village with your family. Imagine artists creating in the plazas year round. Imagine historical reference points throughout the village, with placards commemorating different time periods in our wonderful history,” said the lead in on the page. It can be found at: www.gofundme.com/ LadnerVillage. “The whole idea started when I was down in Florida with my wife walking around a small town called Maples at night,” said LBA president Andrea Frustaci. “It was just so vibrant — everything was lit up, there was music playing — it was just such an inviting place to be and I wondered whether we could pull off this same type of thing in Ladner.

The Corporation of Delta’s $6-million Delta Street improvement project is getting close to completion as landscaping work is being done. “Funding is always an issue. The Corporation (of Delta) has put in a lot of money to beautify the streets and it’s going to take a lot of money, so why don’t we reach out to the citizens and businesses of Ladner to take ownership of its streets to create a vibrant city core.” The goal is to raise the
funds for the lighting and three-year maintenance for the trees on 48th Avenue, Delta Street and Haviland Street with clear LED lights to be installed by mid-fall. These lights would remain up for a minimum of five months of the year and would be timed to light the village from dusk
to 11 p.m. Additionally, historic placards would be installed next spring to highlight some of the extensive history of the village. These placards would coincide with the walking map that is currently in development by the LBA. “Everyone likes the idea. The corporation is
on board. They love the idea that people are taking ownership of their streets,” Frustaci said. “When you break this down, if 1,000 people donate say $20, that’s $20,000, so it takes a little bit of money to be donated from a lot of people and we can get this done. I think we’ll get there.”
Casino benefits well documented, but costs aren’t CONTINUED from Page 1 “Although the direct and indirect economic benefits to a community are well documented, the costs are not. Given the myriad of health and social health problems associated with problem gambling, these are difficult to quantify but also require careful consideration,” they added.
AUGUST SPECIAL Offer expires August 31, 2016
Saying councils should be guided by the best available information, Lee and King offered to discuss public health considerations. The B.C. Lottery Corporation this year asked three local governments south of the Fraser River to declare if they were interested in host-
ing a casino. According to BCLC, based on revenue estimates, a host local government would receive between $1.5 million and $3 million annually. The City of Surrey declined, but the Corporation of Delta and the Tsawwassen First Nation indicated they’re interested.
Delta has identified the Delta Town & Country Inn property as the only suitable site. If the TFN is chosen, the gaming facility would be located near the new shopping mall complex nearing completion. BCLC is now evaluating the submissions, saying it will base its decision on a

number of factors. Once a preferred site is chosen, an application must still go through the Delta municipal or the First Nation’s approval processes. Asked for a timeline when a decision could be announced, BCLC would only say that will occur once the evaluation phase concludes.

Pizza guy’s car stolen, but thief apprehended South Delta Crime Beat
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:
TSAWWASSEN
• Aug. 17, 6:45 p.m., 5100-block of 12th Avenue: Complainant reported he had left his Mercedes running while he was delivering pizza and when he returned to the car it was gone. Approximately an hour later police located the vehicle at Kerry Drive and 4th Avenue and a containment of the area was setup. The driver arrived and quickly drove away with lights off upon observing the police vehicle. The stolen vehicle was stopped and the driver arrested. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the incident is still under investigation. • Aug. 20, 12:14 p.m., 1200-block of Beach Grove Road: Complainant reported someone had stolen six plants from the clay pots in her front yard. She indicated this is the second time this has happened but she does not believe she is targeted and wished police to record the incident for information purposes. • Aug. 20, 2:04 p.m., 1600-block of Enderby Avenue: Complainant reported the theft of his bike which he left unlocked in the front yard. The bicycle is described as a white Kona mountain bike. • Aug. 21, 5:52 p.m., 1400-block of 55th Street: Report received that someone had entered the complainant’s storage room at the back of the house and stolen approximately $760 worth of garden tools. No witnesses or suspect. • Aug. 21, 5:57 p.m., 5200-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported he had observed two male

youth who appeared to be intoxicated near his parked vehicle. He then heard a crunching sound and saw the side mirror loosened from the socket. Upon questioning the males, they denied touching the car and fled from the scene. He followed the males who briefly talked with someone in a home in the area. The complainant provided this address to police who investigated but were unable to locate the suspects.
LADNER
• Aug. 17, 2 p.m., 5000block of Central Avenue: Report received that someone had entered the complainant’s vehicle. The driver’s door frame was scratched and the interior driver door handle casing loosened. Nothing appeared to be displaced inside the vehicle. Canvass of the neighbourhood by police proved negative. • Aug. 17, 8:16 p.m., 3300-block of River Road West: Complainant reported someone had just driven past her farm and fired a firework into the llama pen, frightening the animals and causing a possible fire hazard. Police patrolled the area but no vehicle located. • Aug. 19, 11:29 a.m., 5600-block of Clipper Road: Complainant reported he is concerned that his new driver’s license had not arrived and was possibly stolen from his Canada Post mailbox near his residence. The postal service indicated the letter was sent on July 29 and he should have received his mail by now. The complainant has informed Equifax, TransUnion and his financial institutions regarding the incident. Information regarding the driver’s license added to the police database. • Aug. 20, 9:18 a.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Report received from complainant that his vehicle had suffered a dent and several scratches near the front of the hood. He believes the damage occurred while he was visiting several banks in the Ladner area. Police examined the vehicle and it appeared something had been dropped on the hood rather than caused by a motor vehicle accident. File created for insurance purposes.

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough and Surrey Centre MP Randeep Sarai are co-hosting a town hall meeting on climate change Monday. The forum at L.A. Matheson Secondary, 9484-122nd St., Surrey, will be an opportunity for Delta and Surrey residents to provide their input on what should form Canada’s climate action plan. MPs across the country are hosting similar meetings. “We are transitioning Canada towards a stronger, more resilient, low-carbon economy — that also improves quality of life for Canadians. To do this, we will need to identify measures that governments can take to grow their economies and reduce emissions in the long term. We need help from Canadians like you,” according to a government website. Priority at the Aug. 29 meeting will be given to

Father-daughter duo to tackle Kilimanjaro Salim and Safiya Kamani will climb for Alzheimer Society DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Local father-daughter duo Salim and Safiya Kamani plan to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro early next month to support the Alzheimer Society of B.C. They’ve been training since January, says Salim, who lives in Tsawwassen and works as a dentist in Richmond. “We’ve been slowly progressing and getting healthier,” he says with a laugh. They’ve been climbing the stairs at Fred Gingell Park “as often as we can,” he says, adding the Grouse Grind and the nearby BCMC Trail are training spots as well. He and Safiya, who plans to go to BCIT in January to study medical laboratory science, both say they’re excited to go to Africa for the trek but note it’s hard to say how much of a factor the altitude will be. Starting Sept. 10, they expect it will take eight days to climb and descend
Mt. Kilimanjaro, which at more than 19,000 feet is Africa’s highest peak. They’re hoping to raise $50,000 for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Their fundraising page can be found at http://anythingforalzheimers.ca/salimand-safiya-conquer-mtkilimanjaro/. Funds will go to support programs and services in the province that improve the quality of life for people living with dementia and their families, as well as helping to fund research into the causes and cures, according to a press release. Kamani was inspired to hike because of the increase he’s seen in the number of his patients and their families affected by dementia. He says the society and locals who’ve already climbed the mountain have been a big help with preparations. The Kamanis will be taking on the climb with another father-child duo, Bill and Spencer Der from Burnaby.

hen developments have been proposed, typical concerns to this point have revolved around a potential change in character to the neighbourhood, complete with worries over increased traffic and congestion. Those are still prevalent any time a proposal comes forward, and likely always will be, but we’re beginning to see a new kind of concern that’s often phrased as a question: Are there adequate services to accommodate these new residents? Around here, we’re hearing it primarily when it comes to the issue of the lack of family doctors. With physician retirements orphaning thousands of patients, many are without a GP and wonder what that means when thousands more people are added to the area’s population in the coming years through new construction. I was talking to an 85-year-old lady last week who is one of those orphans. There was desperation in her voice as she described how she’s tried everything to find another doctor, but now faces the future without one. That’s a scary situation for anyone, let alone an elderly person wondering how she’ll get her prescription refilled. Next door in Surrey, it’s overcrowding in schools, to the point where trustees in that city have called for a temporary moratorium on development until the province can build enough schools to house all the children. A few weeks back I stumbled upon one of those lists on the web, this one being the 25 best places to live in Canada. It used the usual criteria — weather, crime rate, employment opportunities, etc. — to formulate the rankings, but also included a figure for doctors per capita in each city. As residential development continues to exert all kinds of pressures, I suspect we’ll soon see those “best places” lists also track per capita metrics such as hospital beds, recreation centres, police officers and other public services that factor into a liveable community. There’s no doubt that real estate is helping fuel B.C.’s economy, but it’s absolutely imperative the infrastructure is in place to handle the influx of people. If it continues to lag behind, we’ll not only be dropping off those lists (Delta was 14th by the way), but those voices of concern over development will grow much louder.
Easy to enjoy B.C.’s bountiful harvest for months to come
T
he kids are on their way back to the classroom in just over a week but that does not mean we have to say goodbye to summer quite yet. The fall equinox is Sept. 22, so we have lots of time to enjoy late summer. You can usually smell fall coming but I personally have not had a whiff quite yet, which is just fine with me. I really enjoy this time of year for many reasons, but if you are a fruit lover it is full on peach season. I can’t get enough of them, to be honest, eating one or two a day at least. Our B.C. farmers have had some great crops over the past couple of years and this year has been no exception. It started with an early bumper crop of strawberries whose plants yielded two and three harvests. A fantastic blueberry crop ensued, producing massive sweet berries. Next on the agenda was an unbelievable cherry crop. A few pounds of cherries for dessert was the norm at our house for a while. The peaches and nectarines will soon give way to what promises to be a robust apple and pear offering. If you haven’t already been market shopping during this summer, you have to take in the sights and smells of nature’s bounty.
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
A good place to do this is at the Backroads Family Farm Market at the foot of 52nd Street. Another good spot to load up on goodies from the Okanagan is Richmond Country Farms on Steveston Highway. The Keremeos tomatoes are rolling in now... another favourite of mine. Over the past few weeks we have been harvesting a boat load of cucumbers from our neighbourhood school farms and are in the process of pickling. The kids in the Delta School District will be learning some of these often forgotten skills. When I was a kid, our basement shelves were stocked with home canned fruits and vegetables. Jam, apple sauce, canned peaches, tomatoes and pickles were some of the mainstays. I didn’t really appreciate the
product then and thought it somewhat pedestrian to be eating home canned food. Today, however, with the persistent buzz around supporting local farmers and buying local, it makes perfect sense to load up on our delicious local seasonal fare and freeze or can our produce for a surprise taste of summer in mid-winter. When my backyard tomatoes are done, which won’t be for a while, I will buy a case or so of the Okanagan toms to make marinara sauce that will be portioned and frozen. My backyard with this supplement will keep us in sauce until the spring. I actually just finished off frozen blueberries from last year and have already put a few pounds in the freezer from this year. I am a big fan of fruit smoothies for breakfast and there is nothing as simple and tasty as throwing a handful of berries and peaches at some yogurt for a blend. If you want to support local farmers and enjoy the taste of summer all year round, stock up on our local seasonal crops and preserve or freeze them. You will be glad you did. Letters
Land for port purposes can’t come from ALR
Editor: Re: Port calls for protection of trade-enabling land, letter to the editor, Aug. 19 Whether or not the Port of Vancouver says it needs 2,300 or 2,500 acres to handle future industrial trade is rather a moot point and I, for one, doubt the port needs anywhere near that much land. How can you trust its estimates when it has such an abysmal forecasting track record? If the land has to come from ALR, then I say forget it and find another way. Most British Columbians do not want to convert our precious farmland to industrial by an appointed group of empire builders

Editor: Last week my elderly mother wandered away from her home. I would also like to thank Dr. Craig Martin and Gail, both of View Medical Family Practice, for their compassion and assistance. who report to no one and make unilateral decisions against the public interest. There are some very viable alternatives to building West Coast port infrastructure for rail yards to coincide with sorting and storing of empty containers on precious farmland. How about an inland port at Kamloops or Ashcroft? Since about 70 per cent of the West Coast container business ends up in central and eastern North America, a railway terminal in the southern interior of the province makes a lot of sense. No other ports around the world insist warehouses and logistics infrastructure have to be close to the marine terminals. So why

MLA cautions to be wary of the port’s spin doctors Editor: Re: Port calls for protection of trade-enabling land, letter to the editor, Aug. 19 Obviously we have a new buzz word: “Tradeenabling land” has replaced the too-close-tohome “port-related land.” Either way, the port’s assertion that I said it was planning to purchase 2,300 acres of farmland is, itself, untrue.
What I said is, “The port constantly warns Metro Vancouver that servicing its needs will require 2,300 acres of additional industrial land.” The port’s response indicates that number is actually higher, at 2,500 acres — cold comfort for those hoping to protect Delta’s agricultural land. My central point remains. The tradeenabling land in question
will eventually be used for warehouse and distribution centres, as port president and CEO Robin Silvester acknowledged. The port has already purchased 236 acres of farmland in Richmond, and if Terminal 2 proceeds, there is absolutely no doubt the port will do whatever it can to support the industrial development of the ALR land in Delta that is presently optioned by the
Emerson Group. I say again, if the port one day becomes involved in that land purchase it will not have to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission for an exclusion. The spin doctors are hard at work and we do well to carefully read their wordsmithing: “We have no plans to convert [the 236 acres] at this time, but should that change,
we would consult with the Agricultural Land Commission and other stakeholders to find mutually beneficial solutions and ensure we appropriately mitigate for any lost productivity.” (Italics are mine.) Now, I ask you, how do you mitigate the lost productivity of agricultural land that no longer exists? Vicki Huntington MLA, Delta South
Community members taking lead on housing issue Editor: Re: Social planner to review Delta housing, Aug 17 It is heartening to hear that Delta politicians are taking stock of housing in the municipality, although I do wonder at the depth of their concern when the only current proactive strategy for making affordable housing available — the secondary suite program — is now being essentially gutted by a new policy that has received much less fanfare than the rollout of the program itself. I know the priorities for municipal level decisions are complex and I
also understand that for many the rise in property values has been beneficial, however, for many people the lack of available and affordable housing means they cannot remain living in the community they were raised in or have been raising their children in. Not only that, but the lack of available and affordable housing means parents who are retiring or have retired are not able to hope that their children and grandchildren could afford to live nearby. Because I believe in the power of community organizing, I (along with several other concerned

Tax on foreign buyers could create an unwanted legacy Editor: When Premier Christy Clark was first elected, she almost immediately travelled to Asia to seek foreign investment for our province. It was a good decision and really only what every other previous premier had done. It was also politically popular because it showed that foreign investment mattered, created economic activity and jobs. In 1988, my government tackled the archaic Land Titles Fee program. It was also viewed as a means of diverting some of the tax burden from the middle income earner to property by using much of the proceeds to lower the provincial sales tax. It was much maligned by the opposition, both NDP and Liberal. At the introduction of a bill to establish the property transfer tax we also
reduced the sales tax by 15 per cent with the promise to lower it further after we knew better what revenues were produced. It was always my view the middle and lower income earners, in relative terms, paid the most tax. In the next election, the NDP was elected government. It suddenly embraced the property transfer tax but also increased the sales tax. When the Liberals got in power they loved the revenue from the transfer tax but again increased the sales tax even further. For a variety of reasons, none the least of which was “quantitative easing,” the printing of money with nothing to back it, offshore investors, especially those from Asia, sought to buy property, especially on the West Coast in B.C. Dollars poured in, property values increased dramatically, building boomed and

but found themselves unable to compete with what Asians were able and willing to pay. Despite pressure from the NDP opposition, the Liberals wisely resisted and some argued that starting in the Fraser Valley or elsewhere in B.C., until able to afford the higher city prices, was not a bad place to begin. The pressure continued and increased, an election was nearing, the Liberals caved and introduced an unprecedented and very hefty foreign buyers tax of 15 per cent on the value of the property. It has now been a month, home sales in Metro Vancouver have plunged, soon construction jobs will begin to suffer and our reputation of being a friendly place to invest may be shattered and could well become a lasting legacy. The young B.C. voters still can’t afford a Metro Vancouver home and with all the present rules, regulations and delays, it is not likely to change. I would like to recommend to the provincial government, the real long term solution. In the early 1980s, as the minister for municipal affairs and transit, I introduced the Planning Act. It made its

way right to the legislature where, as expected, the NDP opposition, regional districts and some municipal and city bureaucrats, and even some special interests, like big developers, mounted their protests. Their main complaint was the requirement for municipalities and regional districts to develop a five-year plan that clearly delineated lands available for development. The plans were subject to provincial approval and for possible amendments. An application from a person or developer had to be dealt within 60 days. If approval or disapproval was not granted within the 60 days, the application was automatically approved and subject only to an appeal by either party to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs. It was considered by the ministry to save a person wanting to build or buy a home many, many dollars and time and to quickly respond to a housing shortage at any time. The protests by special interests grew and thenpremier Bill Bennett and my cabinet colleagues decided to pull the bill. Old timers may recall me calling them “gutless.” Reintroducing the bill, or one similar, and enacting it, instead of cutting foreign investment and jobs, is the best solution. Keep in mind, the time will come when another premier will travel to Asia to entice foreign investment and find the welcome mat gone. Keep in mind, the hefty 15 per cent tax may appear to be popular for a time but the time will fade quickly. Interfering with the free market tends to backfire very quickly. Premier questioned over tunnel safety
Safety has become Premier Christy Clark’s top reason to scrap the George Massey Tunnel, and she’s voiced three safety concerns on TV. I’ll ask her about them. Concern 1: Christy, on Shaw’s Voice of BC, you told Vaughn Palmer, “If there was an earthquake of significant size, everyone who was in the tunnel would probably never walk out.” Actually, though, an early warning system was installed years ago to reduce the risk. After an earthquake, sensors pick up harmless seismic waves that arrive much sooner than destructive seismic waves. As CBC News put it, “The moment the sensor detects the first waves of a damaging earthquake, the tunnel closes to traffic.” Vehicles can’t get in, but the ones already in can head out.
Readers, let’s hope this gets the premier’s fears on track. Maybe she’ll add the new tube right away? I also suggest she revive a half-done risk-reduction project. The tunnel safety risk is mainly from flooding via cracks. The project’s interior phase, which was completed a decade ago, improved the tunnel’s strength and flexibility to meet a set standard: one hour to get out. The exterior phase was put off to save money. Thanks to technology advances while we waited, this phase is more valuable than ever. At a hundredth the cost of the touted Port Metro Bridge! It would reduce liquefaction, using the best current methods to keep the tunnel aligned and usable. It would also quakeproof the tunnel approaches/ exits, replace crash magnets like the Steveston Highway interchange and upgrade overpasses.

The George Massey Tunnel is to be removed once a bridge is built. Concern 2: Christy, you told Global News, “There is a vital safety issue in the Massey Tunnel. In 10 years, that tunnel will no longer be safe to navigate.” Navigate? You may be conflating the need to refurbish the tunnel in 10 years (ventilation, lighting, etc.) with your wish to remove it so a deeper channel can be dredged for megatankers. Concern 3: On Shaw and Global, you warned about a major earthquake (magnitude 7.0): “Communities on the other side of the river would be cut off, so we have an urgent safety issue to deal with.” Want a suggestion, Christy? Add a two-lane tunnel tube for transit and emergency services — at high seismic standards. (Many people favour solutions like that.)
Vehicles leaving the tunnel would then have a drivable route in emergencies. But the province has recently disparaged this still-needed phase of the old project. It says a 2007 report indicated “serious concerns the tunnel could shift during the required in-stream excavation and stone columns installation.” Not really. It actually said, “low risk of accidental damage,” and offered ways to manage it. Christy, to put safety first, we need an independent, wide-reaching and fast-acting analysis of all the options, and that includes the bridge. My engineer advisor is concerned about earthquakesafety questions the bridge team doesn’t know how to answer. We know earthquakes happen. So Christy, please

RBC $20,000 donation to fund surgical equipment
RBC Foundation has made a $20,000 donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation that will go towards purchasing a much-needed capnography monitor and a slender resectoscope for the busy surgical daycare program at Delta Hospital. A capnography monitor is used to monitor the CO2 levels of a patient while they are receiving sedation for an endoscopy procedure. This monitor is also used to diagnose patients that may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. A slender resectoscope is an endoscope with a wide-angle telescope and an electrically activated wire loop for transurethral removal of biopsy of lesion of the bladder, prostate or urethra. “RBC has stepped up, yet again, for Delta Hospital,” says Lisa Hoglund, individual giving manager for the Delta Hospital Foundation. “These two pieces of equipment for our surgical daycare will have a real

Local is named executive director of BC Association of Farmers’ Markets
The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets board of directors announced the selection of Delta’s Heather O’Hara as the organization’s new executive director. O’Hara started in her new position earlier this month. “She brings a passion for farming and food, and an expertise in social enterprise that will serve to grow and support B.C.’s farmers’ markets,” said board president Wylie Bystedt.
O’Hara has an extensive background in business and non-profit leadership. For eight years, she served as executive director of Potluck Café Society, an award-winning social enterprise that built a successful business, while creating jobs and providing healthy, fresh food for people living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. “I’m thrilled to join the BCAFM, and look forward to supporting our diverse
farmers’ market sector along with the next wave of small business vendors that are leading innovation in B.C.’s food and farming sector,” said O’Hara. “I’m a strong believer that innovation, inclusion and diversity are key to growth, so I’ll be immersing myself in the needs of our member communities in the coming months.” The BC Association of Farmers’ Markets represents over 135 markets across the province.

This month’s event, hosted by the Beach Grove Golf Club, gave members the opportunity to witness Fortis BC’s commitment to the wellbeing of communities first hand. Fortis BC presented local non-profit Reach Child and Youth Development Society with a $10,000 contribution towards its Building for Children Together project.
FortisBC funds initiatives that support stronger and healthier communities. Reach’s project will see a child development centre constructed to support children with special needs and their families in an easily accessible location on municipallydonated land. “We are very grateful to FortisBC. This donation will help provide more community-based services and as a result more children will be helped,” said Renie D’Aquila, Reach’s executive director. Completion of the
building, currently under construction adjacent to the Ladner Pioneer Library, is planned for September 2017. “We’re proud to be supporting Reach Society’s efforts to make programs, services, resources and support more accessible,” said Viviana Zanocco, community and aboriginal relations manager. The Reach Foundation is appealing to the community to help raise the remaining $600,000 needed for furnishings and fixtures in order to complete the new centre.

Tomato Fest set for Labour Day weekend at Earthwise Heritage tomatoes of multiple colours and stripes are ripening on the vine at Earthwise’s demonstration farm and will be ready for visitors to try and buy at the society’s annual Tomato Festival on Saturday, Sept. 3. Set to run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the on-farm event has a earned a place on the calendars of foodies in pursuit of the tastiest tomato ever, as well as gardeners and others smitten with this late summer fruit. Growers Graham and Maja Willoughby are doing “everything under the sun” to grow tomatoes that are second-to-none in taste. Their farming techniques are focused on maximizing the micronutrients and trace minerals in the tomato so it bursts with flavour. Visitors can sample and learn about the unique varieties, lovingly nurtured from seed to plant by the retired volunteer couple. From New Zealand Pink Pear to Eva Purple Ball, from Marizol Gold to Aunt Ginny’s Purple, the tastes
are as unique as their names. Whether you are on the flavour trail, or in search of inspiration and ideas for your home garden, the event offerings include food demonstrations and guided farm tours highlighting the heritage and culture of tomatoes, as well as a farmers’ market, live music and kids’ zone. Admission is free, so visitors can wander and enjoy the sights of the two-acre demonstration garden and certified organic farm. Proceeds from the farm sales help support Earthwise’s core educational and community programs, including school eco-tours, farm apprenticeships and the Delta Food Coalition Harvest Box program to help improve access to healthy food for families in need. Call 604-946-9828, email info@earthwisesociety. bc.ca or visit www.earthwisesociety.bc.ca for more information. Earthwise Society is located at 64003rd Ave., across from Centennial Beach.

Rotary work party builds shelving at food bank Members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen lent a helping hand to the South Delta Food Bank last Saturday by building shelving units in its food storage space. “The shelves will make it much easier for our volunteers to sort and store the food generously donated by the community,” said Joe van Essen of the food bank. Each year, the South Delta Food Bank supports
over 130 families on a weekly basis. This is not the first time the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen has helped out with the South Delta Food Bank. With the support of Peter Guichon of Guichon Farms, the club gleans over 850 pounds of potatoes every six to eight weeks to donate to the food bank. The Rotary Club of Tsawwassen meets every Thursday at 7:15

Group from West Shore enjoys visit to garden
Residents and staff at West Shore Laylum Care Centre were truly surprised to receive an invitation from a lovely lady in Ladner. Sylvia McLeod has cultivated a half-acre garden at her home with over 300 species of plants. There are 18 individual gardens on the lot. McLeod, whose mother was in adult care until she passed some years
ago, has happy memories of going on outings and small tours and thought it would be a nice to recreate this experience for other adult care residents. The West Shore group relaxed in the sunshine, tranquillity and beauty of the garden that delighted the senses and brought back happy memories. They were served tea, scones and other treats prepared by their host.

times, a leap of faith. Perhaps that’s where we could look for inspiration and motivation to let go. Through the promises of faith, in scripture (both old and new testament) God says: “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” Isaiah 43:19 (ESV) “And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’” Revelation 21:5 (ESV). Letting go of that which holds us back, all that stuff (physical, emotional or traditional), may truly open us up to seeing and experiencing a whole new thing as God’s gift.

I admit we are a little late to call it spring cleaning, but our house is going through a “letting go” of things that have accumulated over the years and while we have a ways to go yet, it feels good. Letting go is a good thing but it is not always an easy thing. In our surrounding culture of stuff I think we are caught in the middle of “good for us,” but “not easy to do.” Some of it is generational. An older generation that had to work through many challenges and lean times value the stuff they have, while their younger generation that grew up surrounded by all that stuff want little or

The annual Day at the Farm community event is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westham Island Herb Farm. Hosted by Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust in partnership with Delta farmer Sharon Ellis and family, this popular event provides visitors a unique opportunity to interact with many aspects of the farming community, while spending time at a real working farm. More than 20 agriculture and conservationrelated organizations will be on site to engage people about how Delta food is grown and harvested, and how the farming community supports wildlife conservation. This year’s event will also help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Ellis farms.

Get festive in Point Roberts 21st annual Arts and Music Festival runs over two days on Labour Day weekend IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A varied line-up of artists and musicians will come together to celebrate the 21st annual Point Roberts Arts and Music Festival next weekend. The festival is bigger and better this year with a great line-up of entertainment, vendors, a newly created talent search and a new venue. For the past 15 years the festival was held at Lighthouse Park, but thanks to support from the Point Roberts Marina Resort, the Point Roberts Arts Foundation and many community businesses and sponsors, the festival will be held at the marina. “This year the community of Point Roberts rallied around the festival and put a lot of money in to support it,” said festival organizer Craig Jacks. “This is a flagship event for our community. The Point Roberts Arts Foundation created it years ago as a way to re-create community youth development through arts and music and that has been the idea behind the festival for all these years.” Jacks said the event is a celebration of arts, music

The Point Roberts Arts and Music Festival will feature vendors and performers, including Bocephus King (right). and community, and will have something that will appeal to the whole family. The new, larger venue allows for two stages for entertainment and a beer and wine garden and barbecue — both new to the festival this year. Also new this year is a talent search to find the next local star. The festival invites all acts to get involved, come out and show what you’ve got. Contestants for the talent search can enter online at: stars@pointrobertsmarina. com. There will be more than 20 vendors offering a variety of arts and crafts, a food fair and lots of live
music. Exhibitors wishing to get involved and set up a booth can get more details at: exhibitors@ pointrobertsmarina.com. “We’re always open to the art of everything,” added Jacks. “We hope to see many artists come out and take part.” Headlining musical acts will include Craig Jacks & The Mighty Jackalopes, Vegas act Jeffery Elvis and Bocephus King. All three acts will perform throughout the weekend and will come together in a musical finale, which starts around 6 p.m. on Sunday. On the dance stage, Los Gitanos, a renowned
Flamenco dance troupe, will perform, as well as Erie Born, a champion Irish dance troupe and The Rahma Dancers, a Mediterranean and belly dance troupe. The festival runs on Saturday, Sept. 3 and Sunday, Sept. 4 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days.
Entertainment will be on the two stages from 2 to 8 p.m. Point Roberts Marina Resort is located at 713 Simundson Dr. “It’s going to be a fun weekend. We invite everyone from the South Delta community to come out and join us,” said Jacks.

Ladner’s Kama Sood loves the creativity and camaraderie that comes with filmmaking. “You get to collaborate with people and come up with really cool visual art,” he says, noting each project is different. “I just love the whole process of making a film, going from script to film.” The 18-year-old’s latest project is titled My Name is Robin. The short film is a drama with a romance element and includes a cast of four. Sood, a former Delta Film Production Academy student, says about half of the project was filmed in Ladner and that it’s currently in the editing process. He’s hoping to have it finished by December. His friend Roberto
Estrada came up with the story while Sood wrote the screenplay. Estrada, who was an international student at the academy last year, is a “big part of the movie,” Sood says. Once finished it will be free to watch online (www.kamasood.com and Facebook). Sood, who’ll soon be starting a motion picture arts program at Capilano University, says his goal is to be a writer and director in the film industry. He’s already picked up awards for directing and cinematography at a pair of film festivals for young filmmakers with his previous short film Nirvana.

History at your fingertips in Coimbra CHRIS MCBEATH
Optimist contributor
When I think of robes and academia, the staff at Hogwarts comes to mind. Snapes billowing down ancient corridors, bats passing through mournful apparitions and eclectic treasures appearing at every corner. Then I discovered Portugal’s Coimbra University. One of the world’s oldest universities (est. 1290 AD) may not offer moving staircases or turreted spires, but Coimbra is said to have inspired some of JK Rowling’s imaginings. The medieval city is Portugal’s original capital and its university, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has traditions that relegate those of Oxford, Cambridge and other Ivy Leaguers to the sidelines. Located midway between Lisbon and Porto, Viking Cruises has made it one of the most intriguing bus transfers for those on their way to a Douro River Valley cruise. Robes & Ribbons Voluminous black robes
are more than just a force de rigueur. Understand the symbolism of the cape’s threads, colours, and vertical rips and you’ll quickly learn about the wearer’s loves, losses, accolades, and achievements. While badges and crests speak to memberships and interests, the ribbon colour denotes the student’s area of study such as red for Law. Every faculty has a different hue and it’s not unusual for students to wear two or three colours as they progress through multiple disciplines. Books & Bats The Biblioteca Joanin is an extraordinary place — three elaborately Baroque rooms full of tropical woods, ornamental gilding, frescoed ceilings, and about 250,000 books. Portraits of deans past follow you around with their centuries-old gaze — all very Hogwarts. Oh yes, and there’s a family of teeny-weeny bats. With a UNESCO designation (ie: no pesticides allowed), these bats play a heroic role in controlling all those To Bridgeport Station
pests from nibbling away on old paper and leather. The Pride of Fado You don’t have to understand Portuguese to know the sorrowful sounds of Fado. Performed by a lone singer accompanied by two guitars, one traditional and one Portuguese, a teardrop shape with 12 strings, Fado embraces the concept of saudade, a bittersweet yearning for something that cannot exist. Aficionados consider Coimbra the cradle of Fado, in large part because Portugal’s most tragic love story originates here. King Afonso VI so disapproved of his son’s romance with Ines that he had her murdered, supposedly next to the Fountain of Tears on what is now the Quinta das Lagrimas. When Pedro succeeded his father, he took revenge by having the killers’ hearts torn out. Revealing he had married Ines in secret, Pedro then had her corpse exhumed and crowned, forcing the court to acknowledge her as queen

The clock tower at Coimbra University, which was established in 1290, has the distinction of being one of the world’s oldest universities. by kneeling before her on the throne and kissing her decomposed hand. Their tombs in Alcobaca Abbey are placed foot to foot so that when they arose on the Day of Judgement, the two lovers would immediately see each other. Both tombs carry the inscription “Até ao fim do mundo”, “until the end of
the world.” Their story of love, loss and heartfelt anguish is Fado personified. And in Coimbra, where it is only sung by men, Fado is relished on street corners and public squares. The university even has its own Fado fraternity and like elsewhere in the country, the traditional
costume, unchanged since the 19th century, consists of a black suit with that ubiquitous black cape. • Use pill sorters. Medication sorters can keep medications organized and eliminate some of the personal error in medication management. Organizers have daily slots and may also differentiate between nighttime and daytime medications. Medication management is an important issue for seniors and their families. Failure to properly manage medications can threaten the lives of seniors, highlighting the emphasis families must place on ensuring seniors take their medications in strict adherence to their physicians’ instructions. Polypharmacy, or the taking of multiple medications for different conditions, can be a potential health hazard for the thousands of seniors who must manage health conditions with prescription drugs. Harmful drug interactions are a result of the confusion that can arise when seniors take multiple medications at the same time. Medication confusion is one risk, but older adults also metabolize medications differently than young people. As a result, they may be more susceptible to overdose or other ill effects. Families looking to help seniors effectively manage their medications should consider the following tips. • Keep a running list of medications. Maintain a
• Understand why each medication is being prescribed. Ask your pharmacist and doctor to explain why each medication is prescribed. This information should be printed on the prescription label. Some drugs designed for one symptom may actually be used to treat other issues as well. • Ask for help. Some seniors may benefit from friendly reminders from a loved one regarding when to take certain medications, especially if they need to take multiple doses throughout the day. Cognitively impaired seniors may require the services of a visiting nurse or another caregiver. • Recognize that not all medications are right for seniors. Some drugs pose a high risk of side effects or interactions, while others are less effective. Discuss alternatives with your physician if you are prescribed one of these medications. • Keep a medication diary. Record any side effects that occur and how the medications make you feel. Always bring up issues promptly with a doctor.

G-Men looking for a fresh start WHL club opens main camp today in Ladner with new GM, coach and home venue
IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
With a new head coach, a new general manager — even a new home rink — the Vancouver Giants are getting set to write a brand new chapter as training camp opens today in Ladner. The 2016/17 Western Hockey League season kicked off unofficially Monday as Giants players, coaches, management and special guests took to the course at the Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course for their annual golf tournament. It was a great way to begin the season, and have the players bond a bit before rookie camp, which started Tuesday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. Main camp starts today and runs until next Wednesday, Aug. 31 with the Alumni Challenge Intrasquad Game at 7 p.m. The Giants begin their preseason campaign against the Silvertips in Everett on Sept 2. On Sept. 11, the Giants play host to the Victoria Royals in Ladner at 2 p.m. The regular season opener and home opener is at the Langley Events Centre (LEC) on Sept. 23 against Everett. “We are all looking forward to getting started,” said head coach Jason McKee prior to teeing off at Monday’s golf tournament. “For me coming in here these guys are all new to me, so it truly is a fresh start. It’s a clean slate for everyone. My philosophy is to try and create depth throughout our line-up. We don’t need one or two guys to save us. I think we all have to do our part and when you put all those parts together you have the makings of a pretty strong hockey club.” McKee said he wants to see more consistency in all aspects of

Vancouver Giants new head coach Jason McKee wants to create depth throughout his line-up. their game. “We need to be consistent in our day-to-day routines, how we want to play. I’m expecting that all our guys will buy into the system I want to create,” he said. “The rink needs to be a destination the players want to be. I think we will create that culture. It’s going to take time for the players to get to know me and for me to know the players, but I’m a believer in what I do and that it works and I believe it will work here. We have some great players and we are excited about the season. Once the players arrive and camp starts you know the season is here and that’s exciting.” Captain Tyler Benson is back for his 18-year-old season after being selected by the Edmonton
Oilers in the second round of the NHL draft. Last season’s leading goal scorer, Ty Ronning, was also taken in the draft, going to the New York Rangers in the seventh round. Goaltender Ryan Kubic will look to build off his strong rookie campaign, while veterans Thomas Foster, Dmitry Osipov and Brennan Menell are back again looking to make an impact. “It’s been a long summer, but I’m happy to be back and just be back with the guys,” said Benson. “There have been lots of changes, but I’m excited for the changes. I think it’s going to be a good year. Everyone is excited to be back and we are ready to prove ourselves and show that we are a good team.” New general manager Glen
Hanlon said the organization is not phased by all the changes saying everyone is embracing the fresh start and new opportunities. “The last few years if nothing changes, nothing changes, so we will be making some changes in how we do things just to kind of make it fresh and different,” Hanlon said. “We have a new coach and a new rink, and a bit of a new fan base out in Langley. I think everyone is excited about the prospects of playing at (LEC). “We want to create a loud building, a great atmosphere and a competitive hockey club. We have a lot of home games early in our schedule and we want to ride off of this new wave here, get people involved and get off to a good start.”
Islanders well-represented at World Junior Lacrosse Championships Delta Lacrosse is well-represented on the Canada West team competing at the IIJL World Junior Lacrosse Championship, which got underway on Wednesday at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Six Nations, ON. The Canada West entry is being coached by Kyle Goundrey who guided the Delta Intermediate “A” Islanders this past season.
Four of his players — goalie Brodie Harris, Taylor Goundrey, Brayden Kirk and Dawson Trimble — are on the roster, along with Riley Taylor, who played his rookie season with Delta in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. The event includes 11 other entries: Canada East, Iroquois East, Iroquois West, Iroquois Grand River, Canada U17, Seneca Nation,
USA, Czech Republic and Ireland. The tournament, for players born between 1997 and 2000, has rebranded in 2016 after being known as the U19 World Lacrosse Challenge last year when Canada West captured overall honours. That team was guided by Delta Islanders Junior “A” head coach Greg Rennie.

Westlake defends national title to earn another trip to Junior Worlds
Tsawwassen lawn bowling standout Pricilla Westlake is sure racking up the frequent flyer miles. As one of the top players in the country, Westlake learned last month she is heading to New Zealand in November after being named to Team Canada for the World Bowls Championships. Now, she has secured her spot in national team colours for the 2017 World Junior Championships in Queensland, Australia next March after repeating at the Under 25 Canadian Championships in North Vancouver. Competing “Down Under” is nothing new to Westlake. Back in March, she participated at the 2016 World Cup where an outstanding performance earned her a bronze medal. A month later she was in Queensland for the World Juniors.
Her victory in North Vancouver saw her defeat Regina’s Sydney Boyd 21-14 in the gold medal showdown, after splitting a pair of earlier matches. Westlake will be headed to the Junior Worlds with Ontario’s Lucas Caldwell who captured the men’s U25 title. Westlake will be in familiar territory when her winter training facility — the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club in Vancouver — hosts next month’s North American Challenge — Sept. 29-Oct. 1. The two Canadian teams, that will take on the U.S., are named after Dick Folkins, a legendary American bowler and Graham Jarvis, a long time international contender for Canada. The disciplines included in this event are: singles, pairs, triples and fours.
Golden summer for 2-sport standout It’s been a golden summer for Tsawwassen’s Jarvis Dashkewytch. A month after backstopping the Delta Islanders to the association’s first-ever Midget A1 provincial lacrosse championship, the Grade 11 SDSS student turned his attention to the rugby pitch as a member of the B.C. Under 16 team. As the starting 8 man, Dashkewytch helped B.C.’s top squad capture the gold medal at the national championships in Markham, ON. B.C. won a hard-fought 22-19 semi-
final battle against Newfoundland, then produced a 31-24 triumph over Alberta in the gold medal game. Two other local players were also in action for B.C. teams in Markham. Jack Mitzler was a member of the B.C. U15 team that aged up to compete at the U16 level and reached the quarter-finals before falling to Alberta. Meanwhile, Stefanos Goulas was a member of the B.C. U17 team that didn’t participate at nationals but did win three friendly matches against Ontario.

Tributes for August
She married Carl Ewert on August 9, 1952, sharing 54 wonderful years together before Carl passed in 2006. Joan is survived by two sons, Paul and Blair (Nona); grandson Jacob, her nephews, nieces and their families; and her many friends, old and new.
Delta Hospital Foundation gratefully acknowledges gifts in memory of:
Of her extended family, she lived to see three generations brought into the world, all of whom she was very proud of. Joan was a very patient, supportive, charitable, and determined woman and mother. After Carl’s passing, she struggled with many medical issues with grace and dignity. Although she will be dearly missed by those who knew her, we are comforted with the knowledge that she will be loved and remembered, knowing also that she is now at peace.
Sheila Buntain Ronnie Gibson Robert C. Husband Kersteen Johnston Fred K. Kennedy Colin Lowndes Sr. Donald McLaurin Ronald Piters Joan Robinson David Timuss Tess Trepanier
Her family wishes to acknowledge Dr. C. Gemeinhardt for her excellent and dedicated support in caring for Mom in health and during the course of her declining health. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-5PM at 4955 River Road, In lieu of flowers, please consider Delta Hospital, Delta Kin Village, Hospital.
