$19.8-million seismic upgrade includes renovations for Ladner high school IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Staff and students at Delta Secondary will be welcomed inside a renovated school come Tuesday morning. The $19.8-million seismic upgrade project is nearing completion with the remaining work, mostly on the outside of the school, to be finished by March 2017.

The project includes seismically upgrading 11 of the 13 blocks at the school, including the library, automotive and woodwork shops, learning centre and cafeteria, relocating the art and graphics room block and using the space to expand the courtyard to add more natural light. The capacity of the Ladner high school will be reduced from 1,400 to 1,300 to reflect enroll-

ment forecasts and cut down on operating costs. As part of the project, an additional $2.5 million was given to the Delta School District from the provincial government to make improvements to Genesis Theatre. On Wednesday morning, Education Minister Mike Bernier, along with school district staff, members of the media and workers from Unitech

Construction Management Ltd., took a tour of the building to see the renovations and upgrades first-hand. “It is a very complex seismic upgrade — probably the most difficult that Unitech has done in its history,” said president Rick Boates, adding the company has completed or is close to completing 28 seismic upgrades throughout the province. The Delta Police Department issued another warning about the dangers of illicit drugs after responding to multiple overdoses early Thursday morning in South Delta. There were reports of nine overdoses from what is believed to be fentanyl-tainted drugs at four separate locations over a 20-minute period, police said in a press release, adding the cases are suspected to be linked. “At this point, it is not enough to simply remind drug users to know your source. The motivation of drug dealing individuals to make money clearly supersedes their social responsibility in this equation and they are selling drugs contaminated with other more devastating drugs to unsuspecting users,” said police Chief Neil Dubord. “Despite the ongoing warnings and media coverage, many drug users still appear to be completely unaware or unprepared to deal with the presence of drugs like fentanyl in the drugs they are using. With last night’s overdoses, it is miraculous that all of the patients recovered and we are not this morning talking about nine overdose fatalities.” The victims reported respiratory breathing problems, including one person in full cardiac arrest, police said, adding they were recreational users who believed they were using cocaine. They were all young adults over the age of 19.

Innovation key at schools New curriculum stresses a more personalized approach to learning SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A new school year will see more changes in Delta, including a continuing evolution in the way kids learn. In an interview with the Optimist last week, board of education chair Laura Dixon and new superintendent Doug Sheppard talked about some of the new offerings in the district as well as the ongoing change in teaching and learning. “Every school is undergoing constant innovation and development of curriculum, of programs, of assessments… teachers are constantly asking, ‘How do we engage our students and where do we need to go to make sure that happens?’ Every site has that innovation,” said Dixon. The Ministry of Education last year announced a three-year plan to transition to a new curriculum, which aims to develop more personalized learning. That transition began last year but the Delta school board has been well ahead of the curve, already developing new approaches that include an inquiry-based learning model. The goal, simply put, is to move away from the old method of only memorizing facts and figures in text books. “Ultimately, the goal is

We’re also trying to do it as deeply with educators as we are with students.” As far as some of the other priorities, aboriginal education and further improving learning outcomes for those students will be a major focus in Delta.

Meantime, an intriguing new district program introduced this year is the Farm Roots Mini School, open to students in grades 10 to 12. It’s not a fee-paying academy but a regular course elective that will have students attend the former Boundary Beach school site twice a week. They’ll learn everything from soil and seed science to growing and marketing agricultural products. An opera academy,

a partnership with the Vancouver Opera and based out of Delta Secondary, will be added to a growing list of academies in the district. At English Bluff Elementary in Tsawwassen, the school has passed its candidacy phase and is now officially an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme school. The district’s enrollment is projected to

remain steady at a little over 15,000 this year, but it could still be faced with yet another deficit situation next spring due to rising costs and the funding formula. Delta’s International Student Program has been an important source of revenue and it continues to grow. This year, the number of international students will increase by around 100 to reach the 500 level.

Largest seismic upgrade in school district’s history CONTINUED from Page 1 The project started in the spring of 2015 and has been a challenge, according to Boates and site superintendents Jarret Scott and Stuart Currie. Bernier said he was excited by what he saw during the tour. “When you look at over $20 million invested here

in seismic upgrades and the exterior of the building having a facelift, it’s a great time for Delta and for the staff and students here at Delta Secondary. Come next week kids will be walking in through the doors excited for a new school year.” School district director of facilities Frank Geyer

said the project is the largest seismic upgrade in the district’s history. “For the most part, we will be fully operational come Tuesday and the majority of the work that is still to come will be outside, so it won’t affect the students inside the classroom as much. “We wish we could do

more, but when you are doing a seismic upgrade you have to stay within the parameters of the upgrade. Where we have opportunities to leverage that by using some of our money or taking advantage of say taking a floor out, we can put on a new floor finish, or a coat of paint on the walls. Staff wish we could

35

do a lot more, but I think they will be very pleased because this school has really not had that much attention in a long time.” Once the project is complete, the school district will have only one more upgrade — $1.2 million at Gibson Elementary — to do before all seismic work is finished.

Delta students welcomed back with positive tickets IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

If you’re stopped by a police officer, it’s usually a negative experience — a hefty ticket. But this week, Delta police officers are handing out “positive” tickets, rewarding young people for following the rules with a coupon for a McDonald’s ice cream cone. The ticketing initiative is the start of the department’s back to school campaign. The tickets reward youth for doing positive things like crossing at a crosswalk, crossing with a parent, making eye contact with a driver and looking both ways before crossing the street. “Much like other police departments, we do large public education campaigns around things like school zone monitoring. This campaign is aimed at kids, and we reward that good behaviour and have those great interactions with the kids,” said media relations officer A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow. She said often the big-

Typically when you see an officer in a school zone, you are going to be

getting a ticket, and out money and it ruins someone’s day, so this is a way to reward something positive, interact with the community, but also promote the message that this is a school zone, or a crosswalk, and that vehicles are required to slow down and be safe.” Swallow said in the coming week, Delta police will also be increasing its social media presence with back to school reminders for drivers and parents and their community policing volunteers will be out with their speed reader boards near schools.

Big plans in the works for Little House Non-profit looking to expand range of services it provides on substance abuse and addiction IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Big things are in store for the South Delta Little House Society. Recently, Elena Murgoci took over as full-time executive director. She said she is excited about the future and continuing to build relationships throughout the community. “For us here at the Little House, we are going through a new phase,” Murgoci said. “The fact we are waiting to get charitable status and have the ability to go out in the community to do some major fundraising that will enable us to better get the word out in the community about who we are and what we are all about is certainly a significant step. “It’s all very exciting. So much work has been done in the last five years, and now it’s the business plan for the next five years, where are we going and what kind of impact do we want to make in the community, that is going to make a difference.” Little House Society is

Elena Murgoci has taken over as full-time executive director of the South Delta Little House Society. a community non-profit group dedicated to promoting and advancing education related to substance use, abuse, addiction and recovery. Besides ramping up fundraising efforts, and

securing charitable status, Murgoci wants to see Little House offer various community education programs around substance use and addiction. The upcoming Heart of a Family, set for Saturday,

Sept. 10, is a one-day workshop for family members, caregivers or friends worried about someone’s substance abuse. Scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., the $100 fee includes lunch and mate-

rials. Topics discussed will include: what is abuse? Addiction? Could my loved-one be addicted? How do we set boundaries and not enable? How do we talk with them? How

do we address all the trauma? And the importance of self-regulation. The workshop will be presented by Geri Laurence, who helps facilitate the Discovery Program at the Cedars at Cobble Hill Treatment Centre on Vancouver Island. “The Heart of a Family workshop is to help families as they deal with a loved one who is going through the challenges of substance abuse. Families need help too. They need the mechanisms to learn how to deal and cope with that,” said Murgoci. “It’s about having the ability to listen and not pass judgment. This workshop helps those families. This is very important for the Little House to be able to offer this in the community.” For more information on the workshop or any of the programs and services offered by the Little House, email nancy@littlehousesociety.ca or call 604-385-0399. Little House is at 506112th Ave. in Tsawwassen.

That sobering news was included in a Royal Bank study on housing affordability in major Canadian cities, which, not surprisingly, had Vancouver at the top of the list of the least affordable places to live in this country, and by a disturbingly wide margin. It prompted the authors of the study to state, “Clearly, owning a single-detached property at current prices in Vancouver is a luxury that very few locals can afford.” A slight cooling of the market, fueled in part by the new 15 per cent tax on foreign buyers, has helped the cause a tiny bit, but given where prices are at, and where they need to be to make it affordable for most people, it’s a stretch to think we’ll ever get there. Let’s face it, even before values began to skyrocket in the last year or so, single-family home ownership in many parts of Greater Vancouver was out of reach for many. When you’re looking to get into the market, it’s a moot point whether a home is listed for $900,000 or $1.2 million when your ceiling is a fraction of that. However, if you’re not after a singlefamily home, the RBC study does provide a glimmer of hope. A chart shows that while the percentage of median household income needed for a detached home has risen from around 40 per cent back in 1986 to that staggering 126 per cent figure today, the percentage of your income needed to own a condo has remained relatively stable over the last 30 years. I imagine there are all kinds of ways to influence housing prices, but it seems to me the simplest approach is to build more of what buyers can afford. And in Greater Vancouver in 2016, that’s higher density. That’s a stark contrast from previous generations, which enjoyed large yards and separation from their neighbours, but we live in different times, so a different approach is needed. Save for a total market collapse, single-family homes will be a dream for many in the Lower Mainland, but home ownership doesn’t have to be if we stop navel gazing and build what potential buyers can afford.

Deas Island heritage buildings should be accessible to public

I

wonder how many residents know the number or name of the various islands that make up Delta’s land mass. At least five “named” islands at the mouth of the Fraser are only known to duck hunters. Delta has four islands that lend character and a tax base to municipal coffers. Tilbury and Annacis islands provide jobs and contribute significantly to Delta’s tax base. Westham Island is the crown jewel in the agricultural community and remains untouched by the forces of urban society. With the exception of Ladner’s old timers, very few realize the Delta Town & Country Inn and nearby farmlands form Crescent Island, once dissected from the mainland by Crescent Slough. The island occupying my attention is Deas Island, which is now a regional park and home to water sports, walking and horse trails, community events, picnicking and heritage buildings. Originally owned by John Sullivan Deas and used for a fish cannery, it is now part of Metro Vancouver’s park system. By virtue of a legal agreement in the early 1980s, Delta ceded Deas Island as a regional park. In exchange, three of Delta’s important heritage buildings were transported and restored

on Deas Island as a heritage site. I’m referring to the master crafted Victorian style-home of Delta’s many generational Burr family known as Burrvilla, which was built in 1906. The community feared the “heritage” building was falling into disrepair under new ownership. Delta council and its heritage committee took steps to preserve this important home of a high profile pioneer family. Funds to move and restore Burrvilla were undertaken by Delta Museum and Archives and other sources but mainly funded by the region’s parks division. Two other buildings were identified as representing Delta’s early history, Inverholme School and a barn from Paterson Park, which were moved, restored and located on Deas Island. These three

buildings remain the central tourist attraction on the island. At one time the lower floor of Burrvilla contained a gift shop, featuring antiques, and was open to the public. Occasionally the Inverholme School was open for public tours. For the past number of years these three buildings have been closed to the public. The storied Burrvilla is home to the park’s caretaker, Inverholme School is locked up and the Paterson barn is a storage shed. The park is under heavy use by locals, visitors and outdoor enthusiasts. People and families on walking tours regularly stop on the steps of Burrvilla and the Inverholme School but are turned away by signage and locked doors. People gravitate to history, all they require is education and access. I know it’s a bit of a stretch when I say the White House, home to the president of the United States, is open to the American public, while Delta’s high profile heritage home is closed to the public and is the private residence of a park caretaker. I hope you get my point. Seems odd, doesn’t it? And a good night to you, Jeannie. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Develop Paterson Park

Editor: I have read over the years a lot of mundane rhetoric from politicians and special interest groups about why development should not happen within the Ladner boundaries. Not so long ago Paterson Park made headlines when Kwantlen Polytechnic University announced it intended to sell off its portion of the site. As is often the case, the immediate reaction from some was that Delta should buy the land and turn it into a park. How many times have we heard this point of view? The municipality is not in the development or land speculation business and I, for one, do not expect my tax dollars will be spent to accumulate lands Delta has absolutely no plans to use when it has many other pressing priorities requiring large capital expenditures. Here’s a thought: Why not encourage development of these dormant lands (including the municipal-owned section) with development that will: a) Generate significant revenue to bolster and support Delta’s increasing capital expenditure agenda. b) Help sustain the level of services that we, as residents, expect from our local government without having to face annual

A letter writer suggests developing Paterson Park to help fund civic services. property tax increases. c) Create an ongoing tax-paying revenue base that will assist in maintaining a fiscally healthy municipality long into the future. It is said Paterson Park is the gateway to Ladner and I agree that it is, however my realistic side tells me this is not a valid reason why it should remain totally undeveloped. I truly believe an in-depth planning process would ensure any new inclusions would make Ladner residents proud and it could be done in such a way that respects the heritage value of this proud corner. Let’s have a little vision here. Let’s take what is essentially an empty field that is not in the ALR and turn it into a positive proposition for all concerned. My apologies to all the dog walkers, but there are alternative places to go. It is time Delta provided its share of future housing growth and this, of course, should include the provision of “affordable” units

and especially a substantial seniors component. There are far too many of our senior residents leaving Ladner for outlying areas because they cannot find alternative and affordable accommodation. The development of Paterson Park could have a major positive impact on the future sustainability of Ladner, including much needed ongoing support for our village retail outlets. These are not the musings and opinions of a young upwardly mobile individual. I am a semiretired senior who has lived in Delta for over 40 years and raised my family here. I love my community enough to recognize that managed growth and sustainability are not only achievable but desirable if we have the vision and the will for it to come to fruition. Come on Delta, here is a real opportunity. Let’s be positive, let’s make it happen. Roger Moors

Dump trucks now a familiar sight on 56th Street

Editor: Tsawwassen’s 56th Street is now very busy with numerous heavy dump trucks and trailers servicing the Southlands development with fill. These trucks are very large, long and heavy.

They don’t stop easily. This stretch of 56 Street, from 9th Avenue to 19th Avenue, has many traffic lights, with pedestrians (children and seniors included) waiting to cross this very busy street. I would suggest the Delta

police monitor this corridor very carefully for speeding and the jumping of yellow lights. This truck traffic will be with us for at least two to three years. Be cautious as you step off the curb. G. and C. Hall

It’s hard to believe port cares about the region’s farmland

Editor: Re: Port calls for protection of trade-enabling land, letter to the editor, Aug. 19 Robin Silvester is regularly quoted in the local papers on this very topic. In 2011, he stated: “Agriculture is emotionally important, but economically (of) relatively low importance to the Lower Mainland. And in terms of food security, (it) is almost meaningless for the Lower Mainland.” He has also stated the port could import our food. More recently, he said the port authority superseded the Agricultural Land Reserve when it came to land use regulation. It is clear from his comments that Silvester has a singular focus. He does

not understand the importance of agriculture to a community like Delta. Nor does he grasp the importance of agriculture in the Canadian economy. The fact that Delta provides fresh produce to the Lower Mainland is obviously lost on him. In Silvester’s letter he claims that the port is “advocating for a more thoughtful multi-party discussion about land use planning that will protect the region.” As well, recent literature suggests the port is working collaboratively with the community. However, we all know, Metro Vancouver does not agree with the plans for the new Fraser River bridge and neither does the City of Richmond. This is working collaboratively? Silvester has claimed in

the past the port has no plan to dredge the Fraser River. The only reason the tunnel is to be removed is so the port can dredge the Fraser. The port, in fact, has asked the federal government for $90 million to fund this endeavor. This amounts to a large subsidy for the port and the shipping industry. Certainly the drive of the Port of Vancouver under the direction of Robin Silvester is to industrialize the Fraser River. As such, farmland will suffer if he succeeds. Certainly if we are to judge Silvester by his past comments it would be hard to believe he actually cares for, or intends to protect, our “interests” or our “region’s agricultural needs.” Peter van der Velden

Bluesman Johnny Never to play at Tomato Fest

Catch some Delta blues at Earthwise Society’s Tomato Fest tomorrow with a special appearance by East Coast bluesman Johnny Never. Known for his authenticity and style, Never and his band were one of three acts selected to perform in a U.S. national concert honouring the 100th birthday of blues legend Robert Johnson. In 2014, Never was a quarterfinalist in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn. According to Sounding Board magazine, Never’s music is said to evoke “the heart and soul of an old southern blues band, but at the same time there’s a

jazzy, fresh and invigorating originality.” Never will play a set at the Tomato Festival at lunchtime in the Five Senses Garden area of the Earthwise Farm. Enjoy a slice of cob oven

pizza from Chill Winston chefs to the sound of Delta blues in the intimate garden setting. Also at the Tomato Fest will be Canadiana/ Americana musician Larry’s Brother. Larry’s Brother does acoustic and electric guitar work and plays a range of Acadian music, contemporary light rock and country songs. The Tomato Fest will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will showcase many colourful varieties of heirloom tomatoes grown at the Earthwise Farm with sales and tastings as well as a farmer’s market. The Earthwise Garden & Farm is located at 64003rd Ave. in Boundary Bay.

Donkeys make great friends for horses

by Susan Balcom - Greenhawk Vancouver

Did you know that donkeys are equines, belonging to the same family as the horse? They eat the same food as horses, walk, trot and canter like horses and they can be taught to pull a cart, jump a small course and navigate mountain trail obstacles. Because they share many traits with horses, they are often used as companion animals for a horse that is being kept alone. Both animals know the other is a bit different, but as herd animals they quickly bond and become lifelong friends. A donkey kept on its own is not a happy creature, and some donkey breeders will only sell them in pairs. There are three size categories for donkeys: mini, standard and mammoth. Minis are great for driving, but do not have strong backs for riding. Standards can be ridden by young children. And mammoths, which are about the size of a small horse (around 14 or 15 hands high), can be ridden by adults, driven in teams and used as pack animals on trail rides. Training donkeys requires a different approach to training horses. Owners need to become friends with their donkey first, earn their trust by always being kind and recognize that donkeys can be amazingly stoic. While a tap with a whip will encourage a horse to move forward, donkeys will often plant their feet and refuse to budge, no matter what. A treat held out in front of an obstacle will encourage a donkey to cross it – followed by lots of praise and rubs on the neck. Horse owners can learn a lot about training by keeping a donkey or two in the barn! If you do choose to add a donkey to your herd, be sure to provide shelter from the wind and rain year round. Donkeys hate to get wet. Feeding needs to be controlled as they easily gain weight. And, ideally, some form of activity needs to be provided, whether it’s playing in a round pen with a hoofball, walking around the property in a halter practising stopping and going forward, or learning to pull a cart. Enlist the help of an instructor if you are new to driving; just getting the harness sized properly can be a challenge. Once you get started training, your donkey will thrive on the attention and look forward to each lesson as much as you do!

Labour Day

Day pays tribute to life blood of society Wealthy and powerful get all the headlines, but anonymous workforce deserves recognition too working people. As trade unionists, our Labour Day message is that all workers in Canada deserve dignity and respect in the workplace and in society. We deserve healthy and safe workplaces and we deserve economic stability and quality of life in our communities and in society. Most workers in Canada do not have the advantage of belonging to a union and, in fact, union density has decreased in this country. According to Statistics Canada, the overall rate of unionization has fallen from 37.6 per cent in 1981 to 28.8 per cent in 2014. This is a trend that must be reversed. All workers in Canada, unionized or not, face real and significant challenges to their rights and livelihoods. Successive trade deals like CETA and the TPP that give corporations more rights than people, and more power than nations, are real threats to our sovereignty and

to economic selfdetermination. benefited all workers: like minimum wage laws, the eight-hour day, decent wages and overtime pay, health and safety laws and vacations with pay, pensions, unemployment insurance and universal medical care. All these things that are now part of the social fabric of our nation did not exist for workers in the not too distant past. Through democratic organization and economic struggles, unions have improved society and reduced income inequality and have improved the lives of millions of workers, both union and non-union. The time for a resurgence of the trade union and democratic movement in this country is now. Union organizing in this country is as important today as it was during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Every worker in Canada has the right to freedom of association (to join a union), to free collective bargaining and the

right to strike. It is time to exercise our constitutional and human rights. To those of you who belong to a union: get involved in your union; go to meetings, join a committee, run for elected office, give back. Never take your union for granted but protect it as you would your own family. Unions (like ours) are member-driven, democratic organizations and unions become stronger and function better when the membership gets involved. To those of you who are not in a union: get together, organize and fight for workplace democracy. Fight for personal and economic dignity. Any discussion about Labour Day necessarily focuses on unions and their role in the workplace and in society. But we would like to start off by discussing the working class in general — the vast group of women, men and youth who, through their collective efforts and productive power, are the real movers and shakers in the nation’s economy. They (we) are the backbone and life’s blood of this and every society. Too often (or perhaps constantly) in popular media and news outlets attention is given to individuals of prominence and the wealthy and the powerful while the vast majority of us simple folk carry on in anonymity, doing our part to work a job, raise our family and pay our taxes. But at least one day a year some people pause to give respect and pay tribute to the millions of workers in this country and celebrate the dignity and nobility of all of Canada’s

As we celebrate the holiday — Labour Day — that honours the contributions working people make every day to our economy and our communities, I’m asking all British Columbians to take a moment to think about this. Imagine you work fulltime and support yourself or your family on less than $20,000 a year in Canada’s most expensive province. Imagine how would you put food on the table, or meet the rent? Make a car payment or the fare for public transportation? Pay for school fees or a visit to the dentist for your son or daughter? While it’s hard to imagine for most British Columbians, it’s a reality for far too many people in our province who work hard every day but earn less than $15 an hour. Thanks to Premier Christy Clark and her gov-

ernment, B.C.’s $10.45 per hour minimum wage is the lowest in Canada. And their policies which foster a low-wage economy means nearly 500,000 workers earn less than poverty level wages. Some 60 per cent are women. Four out of five work for companies with more than 20 employees. Eighty per cent are adults. And one in seven poverty wage earners holds a university degree. That’s why the B.C. Federation of Labour and our affiliate unions are working closely with community groups to push for a $15 per hour minimum wage. Our Fightfor15BC.ca campaign is a concrete solution to improve living standards for hundreds of thousands of workers and their families, and to address the widening gap between rich and poor that’s at the root of our festering economic inequality crisis. The plight of low-wage

workers and the abject failure of the Clark government to tackle poverty and growing inequality are symbolic of what’s wrong with our province. It defines the choices voters can make in next May’s election. We live in an incredibly wealthy province. But when it comes to how that wealth is shared, we are a deeply unequal society where a small group controls most of the wealth. For hard working people and our families, it’s tougher to get ahead. Unless we do something fast and chart a different course, our province is going to be a place where only the rich can live. I remain incredibly optimistic that we can do better here in B.C. Change is possible. There’s a lot that can be done. Irene Lanzinger is president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, which represents more than 500,000 unionized workers in B.C.

Labour Day

Time to reflect on progress — and the need for action PAUL FAORO

Optimist contributor

Every year as Labour Day draws near, I have mixed feelings, probably like many of you. On the one hand, Labour Day is for many the culmination of summer, with big camping trips or barbecues planned — let’s get together and celebrate summer one last time. On the other hand, in many ways it marks the end of summer and brings on that gloomy feeling many of us had as kids as September rolls around — oh no, it’s time to go back to school. But as a long-time activist in the labour movement, I also have mixed feelings about Labour Day because the original meaning of this day has, by and large, been lost. A day originally made a statutory holiday to honour and acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices working people made to advance rights and working conditions

for each other has gradually morphed into just one more commercialized long weekend. Don’t get me wrong: Labour Day long weekend should be a fun time to get together with friends and family to celebrate the things that are important to us. But as we mark the end of summer, and acknowledge the days are getting shorter and cooler, let’s also spend some time thinking about how we can build on the gains made by previous generations that allow us the freedoms and rights we have today. I think the best way to honour the work and struggle that came before us is to do everything we can to ensure that new workers, and generations of workers yet to come, enjoy the same rights and protections as we do. The labour movement has never said, “OK, that’s enough progress, we can stop.” And we never should. While much has

been accomplished, there is so much more to do. When B.C.’s economy is “number one” in the country but we still have one of the highest rates of child poverty, it’s clear that our work is not done. When hundreds of schools are closed across the province while millionaires get another tax break, we know our work is not done. When our government puts all our economic eggs in the mega-project basket and then brings in temporary foreign workers with no path to citizenship, our work is not done. And when post-secondary training and education — and the opportunities to succeed that come with it — is priced out of reach for the majority of British Columbians, our work is not done. It’s only by boldly demanding change — and fighting for it — that we make progress. Paul Faoro is president of CUPE BC, B.C.’s largest union.

Labour Day

Working for a better future: a labour of love for unions

For Canada’s unions, Labour Day is our time to celebrate our work and the everyday victories we win to make life better for everyone. This year, Canada’s unions have much to celebrate. After nearly a decade of pushing for improved public pensions, Canada’s premiers finally agreed that it was time to expand the Canada Pension Plan. Later this year, the federal government will put legislation before Parliament to implement the first increase in retirement income benefits in half a century. Without the support of the provincial government and many municipal councils across B.C., this may never have happened. But it was B.C.’s unions, working with pension experts and seniors’ groups, who convinced those municipalities and the province it was time to strengthen public pensions. Today’s seniors still

need help to avoid falling into poverty. Many are working long into what they thought would be their golden years, only to find the jobs, like their private pensions and savings plans, don’t deliver the goods. It is young workers who will benefit most from an expanded CPP. Faced with the same hostile job market as their elders, and record levels of debt, today’s youth needed a new way to save for retirement. Changing the CPP will make a big difference when the time comes. Victories like this are what get trade unionists out of bed in the morning. For Canada’s unions, making life better for working people is, and always has been, a labour of love. The Canada we want has always been a country based on fairness, equality and cooperation. It’s one where a day’s work is fairly compensated, where nobody has to choose between their job and their health, and where

after a lifetime of work, no one should face retiring into poverty. It’s one where working people have the stability and security to make plans for the future. Where our race, our gender, our bodies, who we love and how we live aren’t used against us. Where we are free to come together and work together for everyone’s benefit. This is why unions in B.C. are coming together with community organizations, anti-poverty groups and others in support of efforts like the “Fight for15. It’s only fair.” campaign. Like retirement savings, we’ve learned the hard way that good jobs don’t just happen. They need to be cultivated — seeded, nurtured and protected. Which is why Canada’s unions are encouraging governments to restore the conditions required to grow the good jobs people need. Article supplied by the Canadian Labour Congress.

Tsawwassen family rides in Tour de Fox The Jacksons’ Scrambled Legs team raises more than $8,000 in support of Parkinson’s research IAN JACQUES

The Jackson family cycled its way to an impressive fundraising total at the inaugural Tour de Fox at Trinity Western University in Langley last month. The Jacksons, who call Boundary Bay and Beach Grove home, were hoping to raise around $4,600, but to date have raised more than $8,000. Overall, the Aug. 20 event, which was in support of Parkinson’s research, has pulled in a little over $147,000. Calling themselves Scrambled Legs, the team rode in honour of their father Ian who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s six years ago. The team consisted of Ian’s daughter Yvette, son Dave, son-inlaw Jonathan, daughterin-law Carmen and grandchildren, Joren, Tavin and Iver. “Everyone is interested in cycling and with their dad’s diagnosis, the cause

Pacific Northwest event in Langley and an event Aug. 27 in Santa Rosa, Calif. In the summer of 2015, ultra-athlete and The Michael J. Fox Foundation employee Sam Fox (no relation to Michael) embarked on Tour de Fox, an extreme cross-country journey in support of Parkinson’s research. The tour covered a 14,000-mile route from Maine to Vancouver (8,000 of those miles biked by Sam) — passing through all 48 of the contiguous United States and climbing each of their highest peaks. Along the way, Sam gained the support of more than 3,000 members of the Parkinson’s community, including patients, their loved ones and donors inspired by his monumental effort. The 2015 tour raised $2.5 million in support of Parkinson’s research, more than doubling his original $1-million goal.

I have a goldfish tank in my office. I find it relaxing to watch them and children feel more comfortable because of them. Kids love to watch them, feed them and name them. The other day I was watching the fish and realized that although they seemed oblivious to me, I could see everything they were doing. I could see when they weren’t being kind to each other, who was hogging food, when one was getting aggressive, or when they seemed distressed or suffering. I see everything. They live in full view — and don’t even seem to notice. It is said the best test of our character is how we live when no one is looking. That is exactly when

creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:13, NIV) That is both a sobering and an encouraging thought. Sobering because everything about us is known. We live in full view — and someday we’ll give an account for all of it. Encouraging because the One who knows us best — who sees it all — loves us most. He sees when we are distressed or suffering. He knows not only what we do, but why we do it. And he cares. Whether we realize it or not; whether we believe it or not, we are living in full view.

The fall session of the Creation Zone begins Sunday, Sept. 18 at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. Lesley Sutherland, a composer, conductor, writer and music teacher, leads the creative artsbased program that’s offered every Sunday at 10 a.m. The name for the Sunday school originates from the concept that when we are inspired and creating, using our imagination, our whole being, we are connecting with our soul, and with God. We are said to be in the Creation Zone. In the program, youngsters explore concepts from the Bible through imaginative art projects and games, original dramatic productions, music and discussion. The Creation Zone is designed to be an allinclusive program for children and youth between the ages of five and 16. New participants are

Vitamin D deficiency drains $9 billion from Canadian Health Care system The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach sun bed Salon can, in most cases, give you this optimum level of Vitamin D. Our world could not survive without U.V. light. Visit Three Powerful websites: • Dr. Gerry Schwalfenberg Edmonton • Dr. W.B. Grant - Sunarc Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian crisis and world wide problem. Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org) calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency to be no less than $9 billion annually. A Creighton University study showed that people rich in Vitamin D have up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk. The Canadian Pediatric Society recommended that pregnant women consult their physicians about getting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times the current government recommendations.

The Canadian Cancer Society has called for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily. The key message the Vitamin D Society wants Canadians to receive is: that we are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because of our country’s relatively weak sunshine most of the year and the fact that Vitamin D is rare in diet. With thanks to the Vitamin D Society for this info, who incidentally recommends asking your doctor for an annual blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.

The Delta Ice Hawks will be looking for another big season out of goaltender Jacob Latrace who was superb in last year’s PJHL playoffs.

Ice Hawks ready to take flight Delta opens Pacific Junior Hockey League season on Tuesday in Ladner MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The more things change the more they can end up staying the same. That sums up recent developments for the Delta Ice Hawks. On the eve of the 2016-17 season, the Pacific Junior Hockey League club has welcomed back a familiar figure to oversee the operations. Peter Zerbinos will be in his usual spot at the Ladner Leisure Centre Tuesday night when the Ice Hawks take on the North Vancouver Wolf Pack at 7:30 p.m. Up until three weeks ago, Zerbinos appeared to have moved on in a scouting role with the Richmond Sockeyes. The Ice Hawks had named Darren Naylor as GM/head coach after his terrific job guiding Delta to the Tom Shaw Conference finals last season. That announcement came on the heels of some diligent work by team president and owner Wes Mussio just to ensure the Ice Hawks would remain in Ladner this coming season. The Delta parks and recreation commission was contemplating not renewing the club’s ice time agreement until Mussio success-

fully pleaded his team’s case. The Ice Hawks were extended one more season and the contract is scheduled to be discussed again sometime this fall. With his son moving on to the B.C. Junior Hockey League, Mussio has since struck a deal to sell the team. The potential transaction is still waiting final approval from the league governors but has progressed to the point where Zerbinos was approached by the new owners and the PJHL to return to his old role as GM and director of hockey operations. He is now looking forward to working a full season with Naylor who remains behind the bench and has the Ice Hawks undefeated in the pre-season (3-0-1), heading into their final game on Saturday in North Vancouver. “Darren did a great job last year and the two of us worked very well together through the playoffs. I think we have a real good synergy between us,” said Zerbinos. “The Sockeyes deserve a lot of credit (for letting me go back). We may be big rivals but I have the outmost respect for (president coowner) Doug Paterson and everyone in that organization.”

Like virtually every club in the league, the Hawks have experienced a significant turnover in their roster with a number of players graduating or moving on to higher levels of junior hockey. They do have arguably the PJHL’s top goaltender back between the pipes. Jacob Latrace certainly has the talent to move on, however, the 19-year-old UBC engineering student is happy with the balance in his life between junior “B” hockey and his academic workload. He was superb during last year’s opening round upset win of the Wolf Pack and provides Delta a chance to be competitive every night. “You have to give those kids the extra time when they need it. That’s what affiliate players are for,” said Zerbinos. “We have a good track record with these players, going back to (former league scoring champion) Spencer Traher who also was attending UBC.” Latrace is joined by a trio of 20-year-olds — Cam Cuthbert, Mark Trotman and captain Quinten Wideski. All three provide grit and talent with Cuthbert anchoring the blueline. The club is also expecting expanded roles

for returning sophomores Daniel Rubin and Paul Georgeopoulos. Among the rookies to impress so far is local product Jordan Bogress who has made a seamless jump from South Delta Midget AAA to Junior B. The 17-yearold forward has been among the team’s top scorers in the preseason. “He has been the surprise of the camp,” said Zerbinos. “I got to watch him all of last year and I’m a little surprised at just how quickly has has adapted.” Forwards Teddy Prior, Graham Lynn and Kyle Ahlfield are other rookies to watch. The Ice Hawks should also benefit with a full training camp and regular season under Naylor, who didn’t step behind the bench until two games before the start of the playoffs. “Darren really brought these kids together and brought kind of a hammer into the room” added Zerbinos. “That’s what these kids needed. Just reinforcement of everything. He did an outstanding job of that and I give him full credit for that. You can have all the talent in the world but all going in different directions, it doesn’t really matter.”

DeltacontingentpartofIslanders’successfulseason Four Delta girls helped the Richmond 2000A Islanders rep girls softball team enjoy an impressive season that included a bronze medal at the U16A provincial championships and a solid showing at the recent nationals in Quebec. The Islanders opened the Canadian Championships with wins over Barrie Storm (4-2), Saskatchewan (8-3) and Winnipeg (3-1), before falling out of contention with a 5-0 loss to Oakville. Richmond then closed out

the tournament with victories against Calgary (5-1) and Quebec (4-1). Caitlin Redmond, Nicole Salas, and Brooke Stoilen joined the team last year, and along with pickup Jenny Campbell, the Islanders took 5th place at the 2015 U16A Nationals in Calgary. Campbell joined the squad permanently for 2016 and there has been no looking back. “These girls have helped transform this team. In the past, we have had to fill defensive holes with who-

2000 Islanders members Caitlin Redmond, Nicole Salas, Jenny Campbell and Brooke Stoilen. ever is hitting okay, regardless if they played that position. Now, we are solid all through the lineup,”

said Islanders coach Troy Latrace. Redmond, who was coming off an ankle injury

that sidelined her for the better part of two months, showed she was back in form with some solid defence at first base and timely hitting. “Caitlin brings a real good energy to the team. It was good to have her back.” Salas, a recruited catcher and third baseman, had to work extra hard at provincials after an injury sidelined the team’s other catcher. “Nicole really stepped up for the team. She took a real beating in some games and just kept coming back for more.”

Stoilen, a gritty outfielder and third baseman played all out. “Brooke has the attributes you want in a teammate. She has the skills and competitiveness, but can also be supportive or just a goofball when the time is right.” Campbell, a shortstop and utility player, is a quiet person with a big bat who plays with reckless abandon. “There are few girls out there with her combination of size and raw athletic ability. She goes 100 percent every play, every swing.”

Hutton leads Stingrays at provincials A pair of silver medal relay performances highlighted the Ladner Stingrays’ showing at the B.C. Summer Swimming Association provincial championships in Coquitlam. The Stingrays’ “O” Category “A” team placed second in the 200 metre medley relay event. The team featured Jamie Hutton, Taylor Van Marrewyk, Kianna SatoKlemm and Samantha Cates. Hutton, Cates and Sato Klemm then teamed up with Jemma de Fondaumiere to add another silver in the “O” Category 200m free relay. Hutton would also reach the podium two more times in individual races, earning bronze in the 50m and 100m free events. Her busy weekend included fifth place

swims in the 50m butterfly and 100m backstroke. Ella-Rose Thomas narrowly missed a medal, placing fourth in the 100m breaststroke event. She added an eighth place in the 50 fly, seventh in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 back. Other individual results included de Fondaumiere 13th in the 50 fly and 18th in the 100 back. Alexandra Zed was 16th in the 50 fly. Zed also teamed up with de Fondaumiere, Thomas and Tahnee Sato-Klemm to place 11th in the “O” Category medley relay. Jade de Fondaumiere, Emily McDormand, Elise Kadach and Hannah Miller were 13th in the Division 7 medley relay.

Age 90, of Tsawwassen, BC, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 26, 2016 surrounded by his family. Born in Lampman, Saskatchewan to Peter Soroka and Polly Konachowicz in 1926. Alex grew up on the family farm in Lampman, Sask and was the first in his hometown to attend university - a graduate from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Engineering (Mechanical). Alex enjoyed a successful career spanning four decades plus with Air Canada and Canadian Airlines - in addition to being heavily involved in municipal, provincial and federal politics. He served on the city councils of St. James, Winnipeg and Beaconsfield, QC and was instrumental in many areas of improvements including the construction of their recreational centres. Also in Tsawwassen, BC, Alex put forth to council the proposal for the extensive overhaul of the Winskill Aquatic facility that is enjoyed today. Alex’s accomplishment in the formation, development and function of the Augustine House in Delta, BC gave him great joy. And still the while, Alex went home to Saskatchewan for Spring Seeding and Fall Harvest into the early 1990’s. Alex a very loving, kind, passionate and dedicated man found great joy in family, community and his Church. In 1954, in Montreal he met and married the love of his life, Leona Mitchell. Alex and Leona have had a celebrated journey together of 62 years. Alex is survived by his wife Leona, sister Olga Lafrentz, children Colleen (Zach Cattiny), Alexis, Cecilia (Roy Semlacher), Alex Jr., Alison and Anne-Marie (Rick Callow), seven grandchildren Jessica, Berlin, Kyle, Tosh, Catherine, Catrina and Jack, as well as by his endearing nephews, nieces and cousins. Alex is predeceased by his parents Peter and Polly and brother Morrell. Leona and her family extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Haven House for their love and care of Alex over these past years.

DAVIES, Ana Maria Ana-Maria Davies passed away on July 26, 2016 at the age of 50, a proud Canadian born in Peru. Beloved by her students and admired by her friends and colleagues, Ana-Maria was known for her positive spirit and amazing sense of humour. Her courage in the face of adversity carried her forward with grace and inspired those around her. She was a tireless advocate for animals and created a rescue organization dedicated to Boston Terriers. She loved to dance and maintained an unfortunate fondness for 70’s rock and disco, that she foisted upon us at every opportunity. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Delta Hospice, Boston Terrier Rescue Canada, or the BC & Alberta Guide Dogs, in her honour. A Celebration of Life will be held in Ladner at the McKee House on September 18, 2016 at 1:00pm.
