GPs are on way to South Delta Delta Division of Family Practice has recruited eight doctors to address local shortage SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
There’s light at the end of the tunnel for South Delta residents unable to find a family physician. A lot of hard work and persuasion by the Delta Division of Family Practice will result in
eight new doctors coming to Ladner and Tsawwassen, which means thousands who have been looking for a GP without any luck will be accommodated. Delta Division of Family Practice executive director Geri McGrath told the Optimist this week that residents have been understandably concerned with
five doctors retiring this year and another physician moving overseas. In addition to recruiting eight doctors, the group has lined up 22 locums who can work parttime when a regular physician needs to take time off or goes on holiday. A few have already started
while others will be arriving in the next few months. “We have a wait list and this is how the new doctors are receiving their patients,” said McGrath. “We’re holding the master list for South Delta. Doctors usually first take in 50 to 100 patients at a time, so that’s how the new doctors are getting their
new patients unless, of course, they’re going into a clinic and just taking over files. “We estimate that by the end of this year, early next, everybody who’s on our list at this point should be attached,” she said. “There’s probably roughly 2,000 people.” DOCTOR: see Page 3

Cause not yet determined Joint investigation finds Burns Bog blaze started at base of radio towers SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A joint investigation into this summer’s wildfire at Burns Bog has determined it originated around the base of one of the radio towers in the affected area, but the cause of the blaze still hasn’t been identified. In a statement issued Wednesday, Delta fire Chief Dan Copeland said a team comprised of Delta Fire and Emergency Services and B.C. Wildfire Service personnel conducted the investigation. “Although this was a very successful firefighting effort, Delta Fire and Emergency Services will continue to work collaboratively with Metro Vancouver Parks, B.C. Wildfire Service and other supporting agencies to review its procedures and protocols to ensure the most effective response capability,” Copeland said. The blaze broke out July 3, forcing road closures and an evacuation of the Tilbury Industrial Park. It started just before noon in an unforested area on the west side of the bog,

It took crews the better part of a week to fully extinguish a blaze that burned almost 80 hectares of Burns Bog in July. between 76th and 80th streets. On the first day it was confirmed the fire started in an area where several transmission and repeat-
ing towers for radio stations are located. A couple of the structures were destroyed. It took several days to contain the blaze, which at
one point grew to almost 80 hectares. Around 100 firefighters from Delta and other jurisdictions were called in to contain it. The provincial costs
have been reported to be $346,000 but how much of that will be on Delta’s tab hasn’t been determined. Delta’s costs have yet to be made public.
Doctor shortage has been concern for many residents CONTINUED from Page 1 The shortage of family doctors has been a great concern for South Deltans as well as practically every other community in the province. According to the Health Match B.C. website, there are currently 621 positions available in the province for physicians, 389 of which are for family practitioners/general practitioners. In 2013, the provincial government spent $132 million on a program called A GP for Me, which involves Doctors of B.C.,

formerly the B.C. Medical Association. The initiative to match patients to primary care providers has had some success but is nowhere near its lofty goals. Delta has been involved through a group of local physicians that’s part of the Delta Division of Family Practice. The group late last year launched a website called FETCH (For Everything That’s Community Health) that helps the public and health care providers access information about community health services
in South Delta. The site (delta.fetchbc. ca), created with the assistance of local health care professionals, service agencies and community partners, including the Corporation of Delta, had a feature added this year linking patients looking for a doctor with available family physicians. Patients on the waiting list would be contacted directly by the physicians, however the doctors’ group has stressed it didn’t want to raise expectations because it could take months to get a response.
McGrath said the new doctors have come from other parts of B.C., across Canada and even England. “We have an excellent recruiter and it’s a matter of selling the community. I think Tsawwassen and Ladner pretty much sell themselves… a lot of the new doctors really like how our community has physicians where most are in practice with other doctors, so they’re not alone,” she said. McGrath said South Deltans who were unaware of the fetchbc patient list and haven’t been able

to find a doctor should sign on. “The bottom line is our community is growing, so we’re going to continue to recruit,” she added. As far as walk-in clinics, Ladner has a couple but there are none in Tsawwassen. That will change with a new clinic that could also have a walk-in component opening early next year at the shopping complex at the Tsawwassen First Nation. The doctors there will be over and above what the Delta Division of Family Practice has recruited.

overdoses in South Delta, but have yet to determine where the drugs originated. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the nine overdoses at four separate locations during a 20-minute period in the early morning hours of Sept. 1. According to police, the victims reported respiratory problems, including one person in full cardiac arrest. All of the victims were young adults over the age of 19 and were recreational users who believed they were using cocaine. First responders worked together to administer naloxone, a drug that counters opiates. “These are still very active investigations,” said Delta police A/Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “This could have been a situation where we would have been dealing with nine fatalities. It certainly is concerning. These were recreational users

and not your typical drug users, so it certainly hits close to home for a lot of people.” Delta police and Delta School District are hosting a pair of community forums next week. They will be held at South Delta Secondary on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and at North Delta Secondary on Thursday, Sept. 15, also from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Anyone with information on the overdose cases is asked to call Delta police at 604-946-4411, Crime Stoppers, to remain anonymous, at 1-800-222-8477 or visit www.solvecrime. ca. Meanwhile, the South Delta Little House Society continues to express its desire to offer its services to the community. Little House Society is a non-profit group dedicated to promoting and advancing education related to substance
use, abuse, addiction and recovery. “Of course what happened in the community is very alarming and is a major concern to all of us,” said Little House executive director Elena Murgoci. “One of the key things is this reinforces the need for ongoing education.” Murgoci said a recent report from the BC Coroner’s Service stated that from January to June there was a 215 per cent increase in fentanyl deaths compared to the same time frame last year. “These stats are very alarming and can’t be ignored,” she said. “We need to continue to educate youth and work closely with community stakeholders — police, fire, health professionals, educators. And as for the families, we really need to support them. We believe that families, i.e. the parents, play a major role and require much support and knowledge in order to be influential and successful in guiding their children.” One example of an educational program for families is the Heart of a Family workshop this Saturday. The one-day workshop is for family members, caregivers or friends worried about someone’s substance abuse. For more information on the workshop or any of the programs and services offered by Little House, email nancy@littlehousesociety.ca or call 604-385-0399.
Sales down and prices flat
Record-breaking market replaced by more normal activity SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s still considered a sellers’ market but the real estate scene in Delta is leveling off when it comes to house prices. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver has reported that residential property sales in Metro Vancouver in August experienced a decline of 26 per cent compared to sales in August 2015. Last month’s sales also saw a 22.8 per cent decline compared to July numbers. The record-breaking sales seen earlier this year were replaced by more historically normal activity throughout July and August, explained board president Dan Morrison. Sales have been trending downward for a few months, he said, adding the new foreign buyer tax appears to have added to this decline by reducing foreign buyer activity and causing some uncertainty among local home buyers and sellers. In South Delta, prices for single-family houses

After a year that saw strong buyer demand and dramatic price increases, market activity in South Delta and across the region has levelled off. have clearly levelled off after an extend period that saw Tsawwassen and Ladner at or near the top when it came to dramatic price increases. The so-called “benchmark price” for a detached house in Ladner in August was almost unchanged at $1,031,200, only seeing a very slight drop. In Tsawwassen, the price was $1,247,400, a decline of just under two per cent. While the rise in prices has skidded to a halt during the summer across the region, Ladner and
Tsawwassen have seen increases of more than 34 and 36 per cent, respectively, over the past year. The real estate board notes there’s a continued imbalance between supply and demand in most communities. The region is also seeing fewer detached sales at the highest price points and fewer detached home sales relative to all residential sales, causing average sale prices to show a decline in recent months, while benchmark home prices remain virtually

unchanged from July. In North Delta, the socalled “average” price of a house rose slightly at just under two per cent, reaching $953,190 in August. That represents an increase of just over 34 per cent in the past year. According to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, sales in August remained above the 10-year average for the month historically, but the number of transactions processed in the Fraser Valley continued to decrease following a bustling spring.

More open houses on $3.5B bridge are set for next week
The George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is holding a pair of open houses next week. The first will be held at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Richmond on Tuesday, Sept. 13, while the Delta Town & Country Inn will play host to the other one on Wednesday, Sept. 14. Both sessions run from 2 to 8 p.m. The province recently submitted an application to the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office for a 10-lane, $3.5-billion bridge across the south arm of the Fraser River. An application review period of up to 180 days is now underway, which includes a 60-day public comment period from Aug. 3 to Oct. 3. An open house last month drew more than 100 people to the Delta Town & Country Inn. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says the review provides sig-
nificant opportunities for aboriginal groups, government agencies and the public to comment on the potential environmental, economic, social, heritage and health effects of the planned bridge. The province contends the bridge will alleviate what is currently the worst traffic bottleneck in B.C. and eliminate over one million hours of vehicle idling each year, improving air quality in the region and cutting down on the greenhouse emissions churned out by the idling cars. Metro Vancouver polticians have come out in opposition to the bridge, although Delta Mayor Lois Jackson says the bridge is needed and her regional colleagues are just playing politics. Construction is scheduled to begin next year and be completed by 2022. For more information about the proposed project, visit http://engage. gov.bc.ca/masseytunnel/.

Tsawwassen’s Splashdown Park will close its doors for the last time Sunday. The waterpark had announced earlier this year that its lease was coming to an end at the conclusion of this season. Splashdown manager Harold Frederiks said it’s definitely at the point now where “you’re coming to realize this is actually it.” It’s kind of sad, he said.
“At the same time, there’s been lots of great experiences that have happened here at Splashdown, lots of laughter and joy and memories that have been created over the years. It’s kind of a bittersweet ending,” he said. The waterpark officially opened on Canada Day in 1984 and attracted close to 100,000 visitors each summer. There should be a 1980s feel to the park on Sunday with its Last Splash finale
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Frederiks noted there will be ’80s music playing, staff will have special uniforms and guests are encouraged to dress up in ’80s gear. He said the park is looking at doing some games and giveaways. “We’re definitely looking at making it a fun day and I think that’s going to happen. Really, all we need is sunshine for this place, then everybody’s happy.” Splashdown is at 4775 Nulelum Way. It’s also open tomorrow.

he supply of industrial land will be exhausted in a decade. We won’t be able to feed ourselves if we keep losing farmland. One of the reasons prices are sky high is because there’s not enough land for housing. We read and hear these kinds of messages on an almost daily basis as our burgeoning region, one constrained by mountains, water and an international border, grapples with its concurrent role as Canada’s gateway, the province’s breadbasket and the most desirable place to live in the country. We need food to eat, places to live and jobs to pay the bills, so it can be difficult to say one use is more important than another, but it’s actually quite easy to recognize that whenever something is in short supply, you’re forced to prioritize. In the case of the Lower Mainland, I don’t even think prioritizing poses that much of a challenge: farmland is first, job creation comes next and housing is last. Relying on other places to feed us is fraught with dangers so it’s a nobrainer that agricultural land must take precedence. Yes, we’ll still be forced to import certain foodstuffs even in such a scenario, but to become too reliant on other countries is a slippery slope we don’t want to find ourselves on. Jobs are absolutely critical to the economy, but that land has to be utilized judiciously. The shrinking supply of industrial land doesn’t mean converting other acreage (read farmland) but rather looking for other solutions (read inland port). As far as housing goes, we’ve got to get over the idea that a single-family home is somehow a right. Maybe it was 50 years ago, but that notion is disappearing in direct correlation to the Lower Mainland’s rising population. You don’t have to be a mathematician to figure out that putting more people into a finite amount of space means everyone’s slice of the pie has to be smaller. The pressures on our land base are only going to intensify in the years to come so even though there are many individual fiefdoms within the region, we’ve all got to be on the same page. We need to get our priorities straight so we don’t make decisions we’ll regret down the road. There are many choices ahead, but there’s one truism we can’t ignore: They’re not making any more land.
Limits sorely needed in B.C. to govern political contributions
R
ecently the Ontario government announced the intention to bring in legislation to limit and restrict the nature and amount of donations allowed for provincial electoral parties. The premier stated she wanted to reform the system under which large donations could be made by individuals and organizations, and to eliminate fundraising dinners and meetings where thousands of dollars could be “donated” in exchange for getting time with cabinet ministers. Under the existing law, individuals can contribute almost $10,000 in an election year and there is no limit on organizations. The proposed law will limit individuals to $7,750 in an election year and organizations (such as corporations and unions) will no longer be allowed to donate. In B.C., there are no limits on donations so long as it is not anonymous (or unregistered). Recently our premier defended the practice of large donations. She stated she did not believe they influenced government decisions as they are (eventually) disclosed and were an important part of running a party. The B.C. Liberals raised nearly $10 million last year through this method. Mining companies, real estate developers and casino

owners are amongst the largest donors to the Liberals. In response to a complaint registered by an opposition MLA, the privacy commissioner was asked if these kinds of donations were lawful. “Yes,” he said. There is no law prohibiting the practice so, yes, it is lawful. Is it proper? Ask the court of public opinion. Our own MLA, Vicki Huntington, has spoken about the excesses of this practice, as has a task force of the legislature. The next provincial election is next year so you will no doubt hear about this again. Our MLA is an independent in her second term — a record for service in the B.C. legislature. Her financial records are public and can be found at www.vickihuntington.ca. Looking at the municipal scene, what are the rules for
donating? In one word, none. Organizations can expense the donation as a “cost of business.” Individuals get no tax credit so it’s a cash donation. Records are kept and disclosed 90 days after the election at www.elections.bc.ca. The Vancouver Sun reported that upon analyzing the 2010 Metro campaign reports, 4,500 businesses contributed to campaigns, but only about 50 of those donors — developers, construction firms and others — raised one-third of all funds. I have previously reported on the amounts spent in Delta elections. The election is expensive with a total of more than $300,000 spent in 2014 by all parties and individuals. This is well above what the governments of Ontario and Canada have talked about in making grants to political parties for election expenses. What troubles me is the proportion of donations coming from organizations doing business with Delta. As well, the amounts contributed by some organizations at more than $10,000 are, to my mind, excessive. Why not limit it? It’s a B.C. law, and in the land of the “free and no limits,” it’s not about to happen. Ian Robertson has been a resident of South Delta for three decades.

20 years after transplant
Editor: Twenty years ago, three Ladner women began journeys with a new gift of life. Two of us received kidney transplants and one received both a kidney and a pancreas. This year marks our 20th transplant anniversary, and we have so very much to celebrate. Twenty years ago at this time, I was in total renal (kidney) failure without any conclusive medical reason and a mother of four young children. I elected for peritoneal dialysis, which involved connection to a machine for a continuous
12 hours through each night so I could remain home with them. Hemodialysis requires several trips to the dialysis unit a week, which would impact the quality of life I could provide my children, and did not seem to be a suitable option. As time passed my body was failing and my blood became further depleted. My youngest sister, Ann Kamlah, was a strong match and she gave me the gift of life. I am so grateful to her for all she gave that words cannot express my feelings. Living a healthy life
would not have been possible without her incredible generosity. With the help of an amazing team of doctors, anti-rejection medication twice a day and regular blood tests, myself and the other two Ladner transplant recipients celebrating their 20th anniversary this year are able to live normal and healthy lives. I am so very thankful every day for my health, the country and community where we live and to our medical care. Organ donations save lives. Cathy Botkin

Smart squirrels have it figured out
Editor: You’ll excuse me while I boast like a proud papa: my squirrels are smarter than crows, lab rats and first-year medical students. Last year, I grew sunflowers for the first time. I staked them. They were splendid. Tall. Big yellow flowers. September came and my squirrels climbed them and then nibbled at the stems until the flowers fell to the ground. Then, they scurried off with those flowers just a-draggin’ from their mouths, peering this way
and that as if they were getting away with a jewel heist. Several jewel heists. Amusing. Real cute. A few laughs. But I didn’t call the police: their comedy was all the justice I needed. This year, I didn’t plant any sunflowers. But the birds did. I didn’t stake them. But they too are — well, were — splendid plants. Tall. Big yellow flowers. Pregnant with seed. Instead of climbing the stems to chew just below the flowers, bulging with seed, as they did last year, they spent a recent after-
noon chewing the stems an inch or two above the ground until my bed of sunflower plants looked like a B.C. clear-cut. Why? Because my squirrels realized I hadn’t staked them, so they didn’t have to climb above the ties holding the stems to the stakes, as they had to do last year, in order to get the flowers to fall to the ground. So, my squirrels are, in fact, and by deed, smarter than crows, lab rats and first-year medical students. Greg J. Edwards
Environmental cost to overhead lines
Editor: What insanity. Not only is the provincial government going to remove the George Massey Tunnel so it can dredge the lower Fraser River deeper to industrialize it, but it is removing the high voltage transmission lines that are presently going under the river in the tunnel. The province is going
to build them overhead, right alongside the new high level bridge, at great additional cost and environmental tragedy. It is obvious they don’t give a dam about bird kill or harm to the people next to or underneath them. Must we destroy everything that supports the very lifeline of every living thing before
we realize our mistakes? Keep the tunnel, build a crossing that saves the ecology and provides for the movement of people, not just for more motor vehicles and the industrialization of the lower Fraser River. May God guide those to do what is right to save our very existence. Douglas George Massey

Union leaders would be better off taking talents to the Third World
Editor: If people generally have a positive relationship with their employers, get along with their fellow workers, are satisfied with their pay, are cognizant of their safety and live in adequate comfort, then labour unions seem redundant. Struggling to remain relevant, the floundering demigods of organized labour desperately search for pretexts to provoke conflict between workers and management. For what? For example, how is vicarious advocacy for homosexuals pertinent to fair wages and prevention of injuries? Thinking about the school strike in 2014, I wonder how good or bad relations between teachers and administrators were before teachers gained
collective bargaining rights. It seems whenever any institution obtains union representation, the employees and management instantly become implacable enemies. Contrary to the contributors, trade unions have reached the limit of progress. Regardless of our prosperity, demagogic labour leaders, through their incestuous relationship with the NDP, remain ungrateful and unpatriotic, seeking to evoke collective guilt over some falsified injustice in Canada, like the minimum wage and “poverty.” Nobody intends to spend their whole career earning minimum wage. Most people earning it form a transient section of the labour force, particularly youth who work

Pouka New Zealand White Rabbit, White, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 2 years old)
Pouka came to the shelter as surrender from an overwhelmed rescue. She was found as a stray rabbit living outside, although she is familiar with people so she likely belonged to someone at some point. Pouka hasn’t been at the shelter long but she’s getting the hang of it pretty quickly. She is almost fully litter box trained, although prior to being spayed she occasionally would “mark” near other unspayed rabbits. After she’s settled we’ll see how she does with other bunnies, although she currently could be adopted alone. Pouka tolerates being handled, if you can catch her! If Pouka is unhappy with something she’ll squawk bark at you like a dog! If you don’t heed her warning she’ll nibble at your pant leg or a towel! There’s a whole lot of personality in this big white bunny. We believe Pouka is a New Zealand White Rabbit and therefore she may get a big bigger! She’s very good with an x-pen and hasn’t tried jumping the fences, so a home with a large rabbit run or a room would be ideal for this bunny as she’s too large for a cage. We suspect Pouka is about 2 years old - Rabbits can be a 10 year + commitment!

Yet unions and other egalitarian radicals have grossly distorted the concept of poverty ever since U.S. President Lyndon Johnson launched his abstract “War on Poverty” over 50 years ago. If we are to believe their bunkum, someone without Internet access is deemed to be poor. Because the carping mountebanks who pretend to represent Canadian workers detest our material abundance, perhaps they should move to the Third World where their talent as agitators might be useful and they can start from scratch like their predecessors in the 19th century. temporarily during the summer. The minimum wage was never intended for permanent workers or to be sufficient to support children. Increasing it to $15 would be ruinous to small businesses and is not proportionate to the exertion (or lack thereof) involved in retail services compared to construction or manufacturing. I would define poverty as the inability of a person to provide the necessities of life for himself or his family. Such a person would likely be unemployed, homeless, reliant on food banks and negligent of personal health. Make Deas Island prosper
Editor: Re: Deas Island heritage buildings should be accessible to public, Community Comment, Sept. 2 Hats off to Doug Husband for bringing forward the story on the hidden gems of Deas Island - the three heritage buildings. As Husband mentioned, for the past number of years these buildings have been closed to the public, even while one is being used as a caretaker house and the barn as a storage shed. A mandate to open the buildings could not only provide the public with venues to add to their Deas Island visits, but also employment opportunities. There is one more building to add to the public accessibility list on Deas Island: the Delta Deas Rowing Club building. As of today, the rowing club does offer resources
to a small number of adults, and a smaller number of youth. For years, the rowing club has had capacity issues, being able only to provide rowing opportunities for less than 100 people. Within this group, usually less than 10 Delta high school students have been able to be members and utilize the facility per year. The local high school representation is very low, especially when you consider there are over 7,000 high school students within Delta. Like Husband’s commentary, this seems odd, doesn’t it? These capacity issues are increasingly concerning considering how rapidly Delta is growing and will continue to grow. We can, and should, support the growth of the Delta Deas Rowing Club. Deas Island contains some of the most ideal rowing
waters in all of the Lower Mainland, yet its potential is going to waste. Rowing offers incredible opportunities for high school students, particularity by providing access to world class postsecondary education. It could well be that a higher percentage of rowers complete undergraduate education degrees than any other sport. It is time, as a community, to evaluate and understand how we can make Deas Island prosper once again. Perhaps through a thorough, annual audit of all the assets of Deas Island, we can better understand how to change the environment to best serve the community. An annual audit can provide the clarity and overview necessary to help Deas Island flourish. Robert Bracken Jr. Former Deas Island Rower
Delta should lease land to casino
Editor: Delta owns and leases land for farming, so why not lease land it owns for a casino? The new mall land is owned by the Tsawwassen First Nation, but the developers have leased the land to build the mall. Can Delta own land and lease it to developers for a casino as the TFN does with its land? It seems to me that having revenue coming
to Delta from developers may lessen the demand for extra property taxes from homeowners every year. Recently a developer in Tsawwassen received rezoning for 950 housing units plus commercial space. Has the 40 per cent increase in property values in the last year helped anyone in Delta except for the developer and those that may be associated with the developer? That
is on top of the immediate profit when rezoning was passed. I support a change from the way that rezoning now benefits the large developers. Let the casino be built but do not give away the rezoning. The TFN does not give away rezoning and look at what is being built for the benefit of its community now and for future generations. Larry Meyer

Free program at libraries to discuss the benefits of a plant-based diet
Dr. Patricia Tallman to present The Restore Our Planet Diet Learn how our food choices impact the environment and our own health during a free program being offered later this month. Dr. Patricia Tallman will present The Restore Our Planet Diet at all three Delta public libraries in September. A diet consisting of
whole plant foods can maximize optimum nutrition and disease prevention, and simultaneously minimize our environmental footprint. The program will look at how much protein humans need, why the first animal product to leave off is dairy and why we cannot be a meat-eating environ-
mentalist. Tallman helps people understand the immense value of adopting a plantbased diet for the wellbeing of our planet and all its inhabitants. Tallman has a doctorate in water resources engineering and a master’s degree in environmental engineering sciences.
The Restore Our Planet Diet will be presented at the following locations: • George Mackie Library — Wednesday, Sept. 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m. • Ladner Pioneer Library — Tuesday, Sept. 20, 6:30 to 8 p.m. • Tsawwassen Library — Tuesday, Sept. 27, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

“Watch your speed!” said the police officer that stopped me the other day. I was merrily on my way and thinking of a shopping list of ideas when I saw the red flashing lights calling my attention. “School’s back in session,” he said, “and the little ones are going back to class. The school zone is 30 km/h!” That reminder made me wonder whether we could have a God zone? Wouldn’t that be great to have a place where we could focus our attention and learning on the presence of God in our lives? A place where we were forced (if needed) to slow down from all the cares of this world and just “be.”
Minister’s Minute ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT
All Saints Anglican Church
However, I don’t think I’m alone in this thought. The writer of Psalm 51 says in their God-zone poem, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast
me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me.” For me, I quietly say this prayer as I prepare to celebrate the presence of God with the community as we gather around a table. I remember that God is with each one of us, engaging us all to be Christ’s presence in the world, in our neighbourhood, and in our own homes and hearts. So, watch your speed, and keep an eye open for the little ones — all of God’s little ones! Let’s also remember that God keeps God’s heart open to us too — never leaving, nor forgetting us, in our Septembers, our Octobers our Novembers…

photography exhibition on now at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre takes a look at the relationships between exotic birds and their caregivers. “What we were hoping to do with this exhibition is really to focus on the relationship that can be created between the birds and the people who are their caregivers, custodians,” says Wendy Kwan, who has put the Give a Little Bit show together along with her husband Russel. They are both photography instructors at
Langara College and each have about 10 photos (all film-based, darkroom produced, silver gelatin prints) on display. The show is a benefit for the Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary, a local group where Wendy is a foster volunteer. She says Russel is a “de facto” volunteer. “Something we tell everybody who takes a bird in is you’ve got to have to have agreement from everyone in the family. Like any pet, they’re going to take up everybody’s time, to a certain extent and impact the family in a certain way,” she says. Exotic birds can be complicated pets but loving bonds can be formed if

they’re well cared for, she says. “Sometimes they’re challenging in terms of their behaviour. They can be loud, they can be messy. But we want to show is that they really can live in coexistence with people if they’re given the right conditions to thrive.” Greyhaven is going through an especially busy stretch because it has
rescued nearly 600 birds from the recently closed World Parrot Refuge on Vancouver Island. Kwan started fostering birds for the group over a decade ago. “Greyhaven really does this right and that’s why I’ve supported them for a long, long time. They’re so careful about the adoption process. These birds will be meticulously matched
to the right people that can take care of them.” A reception for the photo exhibit is planned for Sept. 24. There will be live musical performances and an educational talk on caring for parrots. There will also be a book with more photographs not included in the display that will be available to be viewed. The photography exhibition runs until Sept. 27 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. The reception is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. Visit www.greyhaven. bc.ca or www.newmythographs.com for more information about the sanctuary or exhibit.

The Ladner Village Market will wrap up its 20th season Sunday. “It’s been a great, great season,” says Tracey McKnight, one of the market organizers. The popular attraction
features vendors, local merchants and live outdoor entertainment and takes place along 48th Avenue from Delta to Elliott streets. “It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years that the market has been going,” she says. This season has been
exciting and also challenging, she says, explaining that organizers were able to accommodate produce/ fruit vendors as their offerings came on earlier and subsequently finished earlier in the season. About 35 new vendors took part in the market this season.
McKnight notes the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets’ Farmers Appreciation Week begins the day after the final Ladner market. About 20 farmers were represented this season, she adds. The seventh and final market of the season runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday rain or shine. Live entertainment is scheduled to include dance band KokoSoul from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then R&B/soul singer Emily Chambers from 1 to 4 p.m. Visit ladnervillagemarket.com for more on the event.

Author explore water’s many identities Ladner author Nina Munteanu delves into H2O with her two latest books Water Is… and The Way of Water. The first book is a non-fiction release that Munteanu describes as a celebration of water. “The book, which represents three years in research and writing and a lifetime in the making, combines the expertise and knowledge of scientists, philosophers and artists with a personal journey to explore water’s many identities,” she explains. Munteanu is a limnologist, someone who studies fresh water. The book, which is part history, part science and part philosophy, includes a “cornucopia of interesting information” and can be ingested in “any way people want to read it,” she says, noting it doesn’t necessarily have to be read cover to cover. Munteanu explains that

Ladner’s Nina Munteanu has recently written two books about water, a non-fiction release that celebrates the resource and a short story that offers a cautionary tale. water has over 70 anomalous properties in and between its three states. “At every turn of its
existence, water is anomalous. The way it moves from state to state, the way it exists in all the states
and its own properties within a state,” she says. “Each of those properties allows it to do something
for us, for the planet, particularly it’s life-giving.” The book explains why water is life-giving,
humanity’s history and also touches on how water has been viewed as sacred by many societies and groups. Munteanu, who also writes science fiction, teaches at the University of Toronto. She also notes Canada is a major steward to our planet’s freshwater and wetlands and that’s a great responsibility. “I hope people will buy this book and that somewhere in its considerable pages, they will connect with water and to others with a message of respect, openness and kindness. Each page has something for just about everyone,” she says. The Way of Water, a short story, is a cautionary tale about water, says Munteanu. “The premise is based on some very, very real and scary things that are happening right now between Canada and the (United) States, and within Canada.” The books are available online through Amazon.

Guild doing Full Monty for Gallery 1710 show NOREEN FAIRWEATHER
Optimist contributor
It doubtless all began with Adam and Eve happily exploring the Garden of Eden. Then the apple dropped in, and fig leaves suddenly became fashionable. Depiction of the human form in all its complexities has been a constant challenge from that legendary time, through the present, and will continue into the future as long as mankind exists. Worldwide, in caves, rock carvings, on manuscripts and through a great variety of art techniques, people have pictured each other, sometimes with love, sometimes savagely, and thus provided invaluable historical reference for each generation. Interpreting a living human through pencil and paper, pen and ink, a paint medium or sculpture is taken up with dedication and enthu-
siasm everywhere. The South Delta Artists Guild, founded in 1975, has for years on Mondays run a Life Drawing Group with professional models, occasionally providing a show of its own work at Gallery 1710. Running now through Oct. 2 at Gallery 1710 is Full Monty Mondays II, the first-ever Life Drawing Group show that all members of the guild have been invited to enter. Each artist can enter five works, which must depict the human form, clothed or unclothed, full or part figure, or portrait. The art can be realistic or abstract, and in any medium (except photography). The event is hosted by the Life Drawing Group, and the work on show and for sale is realistic, clever, funny and beautiful, by a very talented group. Gallery 1710 is located adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre. It is open to the public
Thursday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The South Delta Artists Guild’s fall program is now underway, with the first general meeting on Monday Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. It will include a special demonstration by renowned pastel artist Catherine Sheppard. Express yourself with an art journal
Practice can offer much needed retreat from a busy lifestyle and help validate feelings, emotions
An Art-full Life
MEG & MARY ANN
Do you enjoy writing, painting, or scrapbooking? For a change, why don’t you take it to the next level and give art journaling a try. An art journal is where you can express your thoughts using both words, images and altered pages. For centuries, art journaling has been used as a place where creative people, such as Vincent vanGogh, Picasso, Edvard Munch and Leonardo DaVinci, have sketched, practiced and experimented in notebooks. Often used in the field of art therapy because
of its therapeutic value, art journaling can offer a much needed retreat from a busy lifestyle, can help to validate your feelings and emotions while you rediscover things about yourself, and can even be a vehicle for decisionmaking and change. You don’t have to be artistic, know how to draw or even write well to keep an art journal. It’s the process that counts. You can cut and collage inspiring images and words, record inspirational quotes using different types of lettering, try out new-to-you materials like stamps, pastels, watercolour pencils and crayons, inks and pens, and add meaningful photos and memorabilia. Using thought-provoking prompts, art journaling allows you to think about aspects of your life in a tangible way. It offers the flexibility to produce a collection of pages in longer sittings and add your thoughts, doodles and images at your own pace. However long you To Bridgeport Station

be packed in a portable zippered pouch or plastic bag, ready at your fingertips wherever you go. Now what? Introduce yourself to your journal. What do you want this journal to be about? Choose words or statements that inspire you, capture your goals and desires on your first page. When you open your journal, this page will help centre you and remind you of what you are hoping to accomplish. In the subsequent pages, use different pagealtering techniques as a backdrop to a multitude of prompts: write down 10 things you are grateful for; write three things that you like about yourself and one thing you would like to change; describe your happiest memory; fill your page with doodles; identify and write about an object that has the utmost importance to you; draw or alter a photograph of yourself using your favourite colours. The topics are endless.
When looking for journal ideas, don’t let doubts or your inner-critic to get the best of you. If you see something you like, incorporate elements of it into your work, and make it your own. As writer Sonia Choquette says, “Your own words are the bricks and mortar of the dreams you want to realize. Your words are the greatest power you have. The words you choose and their use establish the life you experience.” Your art journal is your heartbeat. It’s a safe space to work out life’s questions and associated emotions and helps you to be more fully present and mindful of the things in your life. While savouring the creative process, know that art journaling is not about being the best artist, making the nicest looking page or worrying about spelling, grammar and mistakes. Your art journal is yours and yours alone and can be one more way to live “An Art Full Life.”

Science has spoken. One of the best ways to help you eat less throughout the day is to start your morning with a high protein breakfast. You see, a higher protein breakfast has a lower glycemic control on the body, meaning your blood sugar levels will be more stable, which in turn will lead to the desire to eat less through the day. All of this then translates to a slimmer and trimmer you. To help you get the recommended 25 to 35 grams of protein every morning, I have put together four of my favourite high protein breakfast recipes (each recipe serves one active woman – so boys, and the less active, adapt as needed). Avocado Toast with Cottage Cheese and Tomatoes 2 slices Ezekiel bread 1/4 cup cottage cheese 1/4 of an avocado A few slices of tomato 3 or 4 basil leaves Pepper to taste Directions: toast your bread, spread the cottage cheese on top, layer with avocado and top with
This is a great breakfast idea for those of you who do not like to eat first thing in the morning and instead would rather wait until you get to work. Calories: 400 Protein: 25 grams Berry Banana Protein Pancake 1 scoop protein powder 1/2 ripe banana, mashed 1/4 cup blueberries 1/3 cup large flake oats ground in blender or food processor until it becomes a fine flour 1/2 cup liquid egg whites 1 tbsp ground flax seed 1 tbsp unsweetened almond milk Cinnamon to taste Directions: add everything in a bowl and mix together. Spray a mediumsized skillet with nonstick spray, then place on medium heat. Pour the batter in and once you see tiny bubbles on top of the pancake, flip. When each side is golden brown breakfast is ready! Tip: I like to make five of these at once and freeze them individually. The night before you want to eat one pull it from the freezer and toast it in the AM. Try topping with smashed raspberries, almond butter or jam. Culinary jaunt through Cowichan Valley CHERIE THIESSEN
Optimist contributor
The lush and fertile farmlands of Vancouver Island’s Cowichan Valley are not surprisingly the home of the popular “Slow Food” movement, a trend that stresses from farm to table and from foraging to feasting. My partner, David, and I jumped on a ferry and headed over to tunnel into the beating heart of this movement, deep in the valley’s hidden foodie oases. I mean, who doesn’t want to sample a six-course dinner where morels are stuffed with smoked salmon and stinging nettle, or bite into a wild greens waffle with black garlic aioli? Who turns down a chance to savour morel dumplings or morel lasagna with buffalo mozzarella and miner’s lettuce? We’d heard raves about Deerholme Farm’s food guru, Bill Jones, and his passion for combining locally sourced products with global cooking styles,
and I had also read most of his 12 books — especially the ones on foraging and mushrooms — so we knew he was one of the idea people behind the movement. We had also heard about Fairburn Farm, where the buffalo mozzarella for our Deerholme feast would come from. A 130-acre farm lovingly worked by Darrel and Anthea Archer and their family, and home to a unique herd of River Water buffalo that thrived in the valley’s lush pastures without any other grains or enhancements. We book a night in Fairburn Farm’s historic 19th century farmhouse, conveniently located minutes away from secretive Deerholme Farm and its monthly themed dinners for a lucky few. After getting hopelessly lost, we arrive just after 5 p.m. for the four-hour feast, joining 18 others who are being lured to the table by the aromas of tonight’s themed dinner: Wild Foods and Morels.
Master chef Bill Jones at work in the open kitchen. “This is what I do for fun,” says the chef. “I even find doing the dishes afterward calming and satisfying.” In addition to the monthly dinners, he is also in demand for cooking classes, foraging forays and presentations. He moved to his five-acre farm in 2000, drawn by
the community and by the Mediterranean climate that encouraged good growth. We’re impressed that Jones has taken a current restaurant trend, that of the dinner party experience, and combined it with an educational program, interspersing each of the dishes with a short
informative chat about the gathering, growing and cooking of the ingredients found on each plate of culinary art, and then handing around some of the ingredients he’s using in it so we can examine, smell, feel and taste them. The stuffed morel mushrooms come with crunchy fiddleheads as a garnish. The next appie is wild onion waffle with spice grilled oyster mushrooms and black garlic aioli. We get to inhale the fermented garlic bulb that assistant Rob Young passes around and can’t believe the complexity and richness of its fragrance. David stops me from sinking my teeth into the display. Exactly at 9 o’clock, having licked the sides of the last dish, rhubarb and wild rice pudding with maple jelly, grand fir shortbread crumble and truffle honey cream, we all stand up to give chef and assistant a rousing round of applause. The next day, after a hearty breakfast featuring Anthea’s own hen’s
eggs and her own buffalo cheese, her own rhubarb preserves and her own natural charm, we decide to check out the nearby Fairbridge Farm School, built in 1935, and ostensibly a school for underprivileged British children as young as four. About 350 children were selected from welfare institutions, or given away by destitute parents, to be educated and brought up on the farm, where it was believed the children would have a better future. Who knew? The school closed in 1952. We’ve been educated, well fed, well rested and have explored a part of the island we’d never been to before, so when we return to the ferry for the trip home, we embrace the idea of roaming close to home. Delta’s Ray Kirkham (below) plays trumpet at the Point Roberts Arts and Music Festival much to the delight of Point Roberts residents Annabel Hilcove and her dad Simon (left). The 21st annual festival featured two days’ worth of performances over the Labour Day weekend at the Point Roberts Marina as well as art-themed vendors like Jack Brady of Mount Vernon who brought some of the “trinket boxes” he makes by hollowing out tree branches.

Death and Dying
Ensure your wishes are heeded
Will takes guesswork and pressure off family members or other loved ones B.C. notaries encourage people who don’t have a will to create one to ensure their final wishes are clear and carried out after their death. Wills help to protect family members, especially dependent children, by appointing someone to care for under-age children if you die. “This is particularly important for single parents or blended families where the law may not align with your wishes,” says Tammy Morin Nakashima, president of BC Notaries and a notary in Steveston. “If you don’t designate custody, the decision may be made by a stranger through the court system.” A legal will also ensures those you love and care about receive the benefit of your estate, if those are your wishes. Additionally, the right advance care planning documents will make certain your wishes are clear to your family or health care providers
when you can’t speak for yourself. That takes the guesswork and pressure off family members or other loved ones. B.C. notaries share five ways a legal will can protect families: 1. Creating certainty when there are changes in your family. Creating a will and making sure all your documents are up-todate is very important for the many people whose
relationship status has changed (due to marriage, separation, divorce, etc.) or when there has been a birth or death in the family. This will ensure your assets are divided or assigned as you currently wish them to be. 2. Arranging long-term care for dependent children. A will enables you to designate who would care for your dependent children if you die. While this

DYING WITHOUT A WILL IS NOT. What are you waiting for? We can help.
is something most parents don’t want to have to think about, if you don’t designate custody, the decision may be made by a stranger through the court system. 3. Protecting your pets. For many British Columbians, pets are family. Many people want to ensure their pets will continue to be cared for as they are now if something were to happen to them. A will can designate those provisions.
4. Reducing conflict within the family. Careful planning with a legal professional can eliminate, or at least reduce, stress, taxes and conflict amongst loved ones of the deceased. Without these documents, there can be doubt, anxiety, hurt feelings and delays. The kindest thing you can do for your loved ones is to have your legal affairs in good order. 5. Solidifying circumstances around homeownership. If you share ownership of your home with a partner or others, it’s important to understand how you own property. There are various ways shared ownership can be structured, and that structure impacts what happens to the ownership of your home if you die. Your local notary can do a title search for you and discuss the various options available to ensure your wishes are possible, and your will is clear.
Survey finds many adults in B.C. don’t have a will
A survey conducted province-wide in 2014 by Mustel Group for the Society of Notaries Public of BC found only 55 per cent of British Columbian adults have a current and legal will, and people under 54 are the least likely to have one. The March 2014 Omnibus telephone poll of 502 adults in B.C. found that only 20 per cent of people in the 18 to 34 age range, 51 per cent between 35 and 54, and 83 per cent of individuals 55+ have a will in place. “It is worrisome that less than half of adults under the age of 55 have a legal will,” says notary public Akash Sablok. “Anyone who owns property or has dependent children should have a will in place to make sure their wishes are followed in the event they die.”

THE WELL PLANNED ESTATE. A solid estate plan requires many professionals working together - a financial advisor, lawyer and accountant. We welcome the opportunity to work together to ensure your estate plan is effective, efficient and accurately reflects your wishes.
According to reports from market research powerhouse Ipsos and the Canada Revenue Agency, Canadians aren’t saving enough, they are spending too much and living much longer than they did 30 years ago. These factors combined — known as the longevity effect — can create a shaky financial foundation leading into the retirement years. “Things were much different even 15 years ago when most people were planning on the premise that they would need about 10 years of retirement income from savings,” says Jim Petroski, investment specialist and certified financial planner at Envision Financial, a division of First West Credit Union. “The current reality offers a very different scenario. Now many retirees are faced with having the same amount of savings but having to stretch it twice as far… or even further.” StatsCan reports average life expectancy at birth is now 80 years for men and 84 for women, compared to 69 years and 76 respectively in 1970. While the government’s recent expansion of the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) is a

The simple truth is we need to save even more and plan more thoughtfully to compensate for our longer, healthier lives.” According to Petroski, there are some things you can do now to offset the CEMETERY MARKERS GRANITE & BRONZE

effect longevity will have on your retirement nest egg. Put more money away — at least 10 to 15 per cent of earnings should go to your future self. On top of that, focus on building an additional emergency savings fund containing three to six months’ worth of salary to cover unexpected expenses. Finally, protect yourself in the form of supplemental critical illness and disability insurance. “I can’t stress this one enough,” says Petroski. “The reality is you’re far more likely to suffer an unexpected illness — cancer, heart attack or stroke — leaving you with increased medical expenses, than passing away unexpectedly. Insurance or employer paid health plans may help cover costs, but we must be more thoughtful and plan for some of those worst case scenarios.”

The death of a parent or another significant loved one can have long-range effects on children. The experience and behaviour of the bereaved parent is central to the way children cope with loss. As we know, children often follow a parent’s example. Children need questions they may have answered immediately, honestly and as factually as possible. They need to be allowed and enabled to participate
For most of us, planning for the future beyond our own years involves some important decisions. Leaving a legacy can help you to take care of the ones you love, enrich the community you live in and support the ideals you hold dear.

The Delta Hospice Society’s Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner provides a family-centered model of grief support. Families have different methods of coping so programs at Delta Hospice address their diverse needs. Adults may attend individual counselling sessions or join one of many groups while children can attend individual counselling that utilizes a wide range of therapeutic activities. Adults and children process their grief in different ways. Children do not generally turn to their peers for support and understanding, while adults commonly turn to their friends for help when they are grieving. Because of this, children are more strongly influenced by family coping strategies and, while adults can choose to seek support, most children don’t make this choice for themselves.

Youth soccer United at last
Newly aligned South Delta club kicks of its inaugural season on Saturday MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
After years of rumours and discussions, followed by months of hard work, a new era for community youth soccer gets underway Saturday. The newly-formed South Delta United Soccer Club (SDUSC) will hold its first-ever event — a jamboree for players 10 and under at Winskill Park. Older rep teams will also hit the pitch this weekend for the launch of league play. The organization unites the former Tsawwassen, Ladner Boys and Ladner Girls Soccer Clubs, bringing roughly 1,800 players under the same umbrella. A solid working relationship between the three clubs has already been in place for a number of years, especially at the rep level. Tsawwassen and Ladner Girls initially formed a partnership for Division One (Gold) and Division Two (Silver) teams. A boys effort followed with a South Delta United program for U13 and above. It then took three openminded executives to bring everything together. “There has been some changes on all three executives in the last couple of years with some new blood coming in,” explained South Delta United president Rich Zahn. “Ladner Girls wanted to know why we had two clubs in Ladner. We thought, let’s open the door to Tsawwassen as well. “The subject had been broached the last two to three years. This time, we all said ‘let’s do it and get it done.’ The philosophy between the three clubs has always been the same. It has been very smooth so far.” The merger makes a lot

Sporting South Delta United Soccer Club’s new logo and team kits, Rhys Saleken and Addyson Murray are joined by club president Rich Zahn (left) and technical director Mark Rogers. of sense when comparing SDUSC to neighbouring clubs. It’s still not even half the size of ever-growing Coastal FC (4,000) in South Surrey, while the Newton-based Central City Breakers is another massive organization. South Delta’s boys numbers only puts the club on par with district rival North Delta Soccer Club (1,000). Zahn adds the new executive has already discussed additional club initiatives, including adult teams for graduating players and a special needs program. For now, the sole focus is getting through the first season with as few hiccups as possible. “There are all sorts of ideas we are looking at three or four years down the road. But let’s get through this initial year
unscathed with happy players,” said Zahn. The merger also brings together professional staff from both clubs. Mark Rogers is the club’s technical director and Russ Heggie takes on the position of head coach. Others involved include Jon Rogers (Grassroots Head Coach), Doug Dyck (U11U14 Boys Head Coach), Adam Wallace (Staff Coach) and Helmut Wiebe (Goalkeeper Coach). The combined resources represent one of the greatest benefits of a united soccer community. Their task is an immense one that can be related to every youth soccer organization across the country as Canada looks to somehow close the gap on the rest of the world in player development. No one knows that bet-
ter than Rogers, a former professional and national team player, who now works as an analyst for TSN. He just watched Canada come up short again in men’s World Cup qualifying as the focus now shifts to 2022 and another attempt. He says changes must start at the younger age groups. “I have been talking to Jason deVos (Soccer Canada’s new director of player development) over the last number of years of how critical it is to get the grassroots right in our country. It’s such an enormous challenge because to do that you have to change the culture,” said Rogers. “We have a culture in our country of doing lots of different sports. I think that’s a huge positive but it’s also doing a lot of sports without any-
one wanting to develop the tools to be truly good at any of them. We have a real desire to win at all costs and at a young, young age. “I think combining our two communities, who shared in the same belief before we combined, is only going to raise the bar in South Delta as far as the opportunities for our young players. That’s the exciting part. On our own, we are nowhere near as strong as we are together.” The professional staff will also be running an accelerated development academy that will take place on Monday nights and rotate between Winskill and Dugald Morrison Park on a monthly basis. Visit the club website at southdeltaunitedsoccerclub.com for more information.

Delta Ice Hawks surrendered three unanswered goals in the final period in a 5-2 season-opening loss to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Tuesday in Ladner.
Penalties costly for Ice Hawks A steady parade to the penalty box in the third period spoiled opening night for the Delta Ice Hawks. The North Vancouver Wolf Pack broke a 2-2 tie with three unanswered goals for a 5-2 victory to open the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season on Tuesday in Ladner. Mark Ephstein’s goal in the early stages of the final period had put the hosts on even terms. However, a five minute major handed Kyle Ahlfield for head contact would pave the way for a pair of Wolf Pack power play tallies. The Hawks
played nearly 12 minutes of the third shorthanded. South Delta rookie Jordan Bogress opened the scoring just 10 seconds into the contest. The Hawks had only five regulars in their line-up from last season — Cam Cuthbert, Daniel Rubin, Mark Trotman, Paul Georgeopoulos and Mario Pavone. Goaltender Cooper Anderson was solid in his debut, making 42 saves. The Ice Hawks visit Abbotsford on Friday night and return home Tuesday to host the Richmond Sockeyes at 7:35 p.m.

McCANN, Debbie July 30, 1964 - July 30, 2016 “God saw you getting tired when a cure was not to be. He wrapped his arms around you and whispered, “come to me.” You didn’t deserve what you went through so he gave you needed rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, he only takes the best.” You are always in our thoughts. We miss you everyday. Love mom, dad and family xoxo
For 20 years these ads have been printed. Full of song quotes, bad jokes and dirty things I have hinted. For 20 years you three have endured. Yet none of my poems have ever matured. But my wish for 20 years was and will always be. Good health, lots of love and “Oh tay in the wind, chick chicka pea!” Happy 20th Annabella, Flo and Sydney Love Carol
