gerous the drug can be. The event, held at South Delta Secondary, was co-hosted by the Delta Police Department, the Corporation of Delta and the Delta School District. “How many times have we repeated ourselves over and over again about the perils of drug use? Schools and police have constantly been working
to educate our youth, but for some reason the message is just not getting across to some,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. Nine young adults in South Delta overdosed on what was believed to be fentanyl-laced cocaine within a 20-minute period in the early morning hours of Sept. 1. All survived thanks to first
responders. “Unfortunately, since then there has been a fatal overdose in North Delta. My thoughts and prayers, and I know yours are too, go out to the family and friends of that young person,” Jackson told the audience, which filled the majority of the seats of the high school theatre. Deltassist responds to ODs
Social services agency sends counsellor to hospital to meet with patients IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Deltassist is just one of the many community agencies that has responded to the recent rash of fentanyl overdoses in South Delta — and it will continue to be a part of the conversation and to offer its services. The non-profit agency has been providing substance abuse services since 1985. With offices in Ladner and North Delta, executive director Julie Chadwick said Deltassist is well equipped to offer a variety of free services to everyone in the community. “We run programs for youth, adults, families, go to schools and do prevention,” Chadwick said. “In general, when people are coming for substance abuse issues, there is usually something else going on, and luckily as we are a multi-service non-profit, as soon as they walk in the door, all those services are available to them.” Chadwick said

Deltassist’s Suzy Fong (left) and Klaus Iden had an information table set up at Wednesday night’s fentanyl forum at South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen. Deltassist has established a strong relationship with Delta Mental Health through its contract with Fraser Health. “I was contacted by Hanif Mohammed, the manager of Delta Mental Health, on the day of the overdoses and Deltassist was asked to go to the hospital to meet with the patients,” Chadwick said. “A counsellor did go to the hospital and met
with patients to provide them with information on services that they could access locally and for free in their own community. The hospital sent an e-mail stating their appreciation for the quick response from our agency.” Chadwick said the recent overdoses, where nine young adults in South Delta survived after using fentanyl-laced cocaine, are
certainly alarming. “A lot of these people are recreational users and the fentanyl is being put into other drugs, particularly cocaine, and people are not even aware they are using it,” she said. “Fentanyl is cheap and it is being used to cut the cocaine. In these nine recent incidents, you are not talking about people who are heavy drug users and all of a sudden you are
in a situation where this is not what you were expecting and people could quite quickly get into serious medical trouble.” Deltassist staff members were at the community forums this week with an information table and to discuss services offered. Chawick said the forums were of vital importance to keep the conversation going and to get the community more involved. “I think lots of times there is secrecy and myths about drugs. The more accurate information we get out there to the public is very important and people know what they are dealing with,” she said. “When this fentanyl crisis started I think the media were using words like stronger or more potent, which encouraged people to try it as opposed to words like fatal. If you are in the drug-using community and someone says, ‘Wow, this is stronger,’ then that is a motivation to try it. I’m hoping this will be somewhat of a wake-up call for everyone.”
Mayor says dealers willing to trade lives for quick buck CONTINUED from Page 1 The mayor took aim at drug dealers, saying they’re willing to trade lives for a quick and dirty buck. She said approximately two people die every day in B.C. because of drug overdoses and that 62 per cent of those are linked to fentanyl. Delta police Sgt. Dave Vaughan-Smith explained that fentanyl, a synthetic opiate, is 100 times stronger than morphine that was developed as a powerful pain killer. He said the way it’s manufactured for the street offers no quality control whatsoever.
BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL Offer expires September 30, 2016
Vaughan-Smith said it’s manufactured in clandestine laboratories, basement suites and rented apartments that are “gong shows” inside. “These drugs aren’t being produced by scientists, they’re being produced by drug dealers who hope to get the recipes right ... and if they don’t, they can have severe consequences,” he said. Vaughan-Smith said a lethal dose of fentanyl is estimated to be in the range of two milligrams. That’s about the size of two grains of salt, he explained. It’s the active ingredient in a lot of the heroin being
sold on the street, what he termed counterfeit heroin, and police are also seeing it in counterfeit oxycodone, he said. It’s now been seen in cocaine. “To be honest, we’re not quite sure why it’s in cocaine. It doesn’t make sense for these guys to be adding fentanyl to cocaine.” Fentanyl-related overdose deaths are a growing trend in B.C. and haven’t shown any signs of slowing down, he said. Fraser Health’s Dr. Arlene King noted that in April the provincial health officer declared a public health emergency related
to the overdose deaths in B.C. She said that if overdose deaths continue at their current rate, there will be 266 deaths in the Fraser Health Authority in 2016, which is a 32 per cent increase over 2015 and a 100 percent increase over 2014. “Drugs don’t discriminate. All kinds of users are at risk due to fentanyl. Those who use occasionally, those who experiment, those who are problem users and those who are dependent,” she said. She referenced Fraser Health’s response, which includes raising awareness about prevention and
35
improving access to naloxone, an antidote to opiate overdoses. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord closed out the forum by asking those who attended to have at least one conversation with someone who might need it. “The people that actually needed to hear this presentation here tonight probably weren’t all in this room,” he said. “However, you do know those people. They may be your son, they may be your daughter. They may be your sister, brother, they may be someone in the community. They could be your best friend.”

Tsawwassen’s Dawn Repin is about to embark on a journey of hope, healing and fundraising. She leaves for Spain tomorrow and starting Sept. 20, will walk an average of 20 kilometres a day to finish the last 100 kilometres of the Camino de Santiago. The walk is in remembrance of her husband Peter who died last October, five years after being diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Dawn said following his diagnosis, the condition progressed slowly at first, limiting his daily activities. “The last two years of Peter’s life, he required ever increasing amounts of oxygen, eventually becoming completely dependent on it to remain alive,” Dawn said. “It was a struggle he handled with such grace.” The couple has called Tsawwassen home since 1974. Educator lends expertise to Scotland
Dr. Avis Glaze of Tsawwassen is ‘honoured’ to be named to international panel of advisers IAN JACQUES

An internationally known educator from Tsawwassen has been named as one of 10 education advisers for the government of Scotland.
What l like most about Scotland is that they already have a very progressive educational system, but they do not rest on their laurels. DR. AVIS GLAZE
Dr. Avis Glaze, who has held a number of senior education positions in Ontario, and the panel of experts will advise the Scottish government on improvements to the nation’s education system and on lessons that can be
learned from other countries. Glaze said she feels privileged to be appointed as an international adviser. “I am honoured,” she said. “What l like most about Scotland is that they already have a very progressive educational system, but they do not rest on their laurels. They believe in continuous improvement. With their thinking and determination, they will lead the world on what works in improving educational systems and schools.” Glaze recently returned from the panel’s first meeting in Scotland. She said they would meet face-to-face two to three times per year for the next couple of years as well as lots of reading and work in between on an individual basis. “Some systems across the world are arrogant and they are not doing their best. Scotland to be the best in terms of education.” Glaze said she wants to bring a number of things to the discussion. “The old praise of raising the bar for all students, but closing the achieve-
ment gap is number one for me,” she said. “It cannot be one size fits all in education. We must educate hearts as well as minds. “Intelligence plus character is the true goal of
education, so it’s the academics, it’s the character development, teaching kids entrepreneurial skills, creativity — it’s developing the whole person and I hope to bring that to the committee.”

Farmers donate $325,000 to hospital
Delta Agricultural Society digs deep to help foundation reach goal for diagnostic services building The Delta Hospital Foundation announced this week it has received a gift of $325,000 from the Delta Agricultural Society towards the construction of a diagnostic services building. In recognition of the donation, the computerized tomography room in the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services building will be named in the group’s honour. The agricultural society’s donation, along with other gifts from the community, has helped the Delta Hospital Foundation complete the capital campaign by raising a record $7.5 million. “We wish to thank the Delta Agricultural Society for this incredible donation and for all they have done for this community,” said Lisa Hoglund, interim executive director of the Delta Hospital Foundation. “They play such an important role in Delta and with this gift they will, once again, be making a positive impact on the health and well being of

We are humbled by all they have done, and continue to do, for our community.” The Delta Agricultural Society has made many significant philanthropic contributions to Delta
Hospital throughout the years. “Delta Hospital plays such an important role in our community and to our residents,” said agricultural society president Jack Bates.
“We are only too happy to support this campaign for a new diagnostics services building and Delta Hospital in general. We all know how vital it is to have the great health services the hospital provides so

stock breeding in Delta. The society has since become a major supporter of the wider Delta community, donating many millions to community groups, facilities and projects.

t’s no secret the Corporation of Delta, the Delta Police Department and the Delta Police Association have, shall we say, a particular interest in B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office. This interest stems primarily from the Jordan MacWilliams case, the one in which a Delta officer was charged with second-degree murder after fatally shooting an armed man outside a New Westminster casino back in 2012. The charge approved by Crown counsel was eventually stayed, but that hasn’t stopped those around here from trying to modify the way the IIO operates. The police union earlier called for a third party to review how the IIO handled the MacWilliams case, while Delta council is putting a resolution before this month’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention that calls for new standards for IIO investigations. I’m not sure whether either initiative will come to fruition exactly as suggested, but I get the sense that improvements are in the making. Back in the spring, after I commented on the irony of an agency tasked to conduct third party investigations not being keen on a third party reviewing its work, I was paid a visit by three representatives of the IIO. It was a cordial exchange of opinions and information, and I left the meeting with the belief that the IIO is genuinely interested in developing practices that ensure its investigations are as thorough as possible. It’s still a relatively new organization, having just marked its four-year anniversary last week, and it might feel even younger given the significant staff turnover experienced during its first couple of years. The office had only been in existence for two months when the New West shooting happened. Regardless of its age, it has the weighty responsibility of not only investigating serious police-involved incidents throughout the province but to ensure they are done fairly, accurately and comprehensively. The good news is that it seems everyone involved — police departments and unions, government and the IIO itself — are on the same page when it comes to the desire for investigations that are beyond reproach. They might not always agree on how to get there, but it looks like they’re all working toward the same goal.
Southlands development will offer farming opportunities
D
elta’s agricultural advisory committee met this past week and received a delegation for an update on the Southlands development. Although there are some details to iron out, the development is moving full steam ahead as we all know. Project manager Brad Semke described for us all the nature of the intended farming activity on the site. The 50-acre or so parcel known as the Southlands Community Farm and Market Square will be leased back to Century Group from the Corporation of Delta. Century will manage this portion of the land on a 10-year lease with an option to renew. An agricultural precinct building will be built and shared by farmers and will include washing stations, storage and likely cold storage areas for crops. The “Red Barn” will be the centerpiece of the market square and will be brought up to code for electricity and plumbing. At least one facade of the beautifully restored building will be opened up and slightly expanded to house the intended farmers market. These buildings will be owned by Deltans. To the north and south of the barn will be two 10to 20-acre farms and incubator farms. Between the larger farms will be several one-half- to twoacre farms designed to attract new and younger farmers. Although I don’t meet the cri-

teria for new and certainly not the one for young, I am happy to say I will be farming one to two acres on this site with my Project Pickle initiative. The idea here is that kids from the Delta School District will grow, harvest, process, merchandise and retail several types of pickled cucumbers, beets and other veggies. All of this will occur on site and the young farmers and entrepreneurs will gain valuable farming and business experience. All of this opportunity would not have been possible without compromise in an extremely complex land use deal. Questions around drainage and irrigation are being answered and farmers who will farm the additional 320-plus acres on the site will not have to worry as much about their crops. Farmer, councillor and agricultural advisory committee chair Ian Paton had lots of questions about drainage and irrigation on the Southlands and Hugh Fraser
from the Corporation of Delta was able to describe the implementation process in our meeting. Fraser also gave an update on pump stations, irrigation and drainage issues in East Ladner. Farmers face huge challenges to produce our food and water isn’t the only one. As Ted Murphy noted in a recent editorial, land use is the biggest issue around here, particularly in South Delta. Requirements of industry and the port, ALR considerations and land speculation make for a daunting scenario for farmers. That is why we need a strong local and informed voice in our provincial government so we can manage our local land use issues effectively. Our mayor, council, CAO and senior staff support our farming community and have been assertive in dealing with provincial and federal counterparts to ensure our farmers are not steamrolled. They have delegated in Ottawa on port-related issues on more than one occasion and are perpetually involved in ongoing discussions provincially with Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick and staff discussing farming and our local land use. The millions of dollars in benefits to our local farmers in the Southlands deal did not come easily but they did finally come. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Route changes make SDSS students secondary Editor: Many children from Ladner attend the high school in Tsawwassen. Most of them do not have another option as SDSS is the only high school in South Delta that offers French immersion. As of Sept. 5, the bus schedule and route for the 601, the bus the Ladner students rely on getting them to SDSS, has changed. The bus the majority of the students take to get them to school for the 8:24 a.m. bell is no longer stopping near the school. The students are
left with arriving at 7:46 a.m., which is much too early, or 8:18 a.m., which is too late and stressful for the students as this bus is often not on time. Last week, students heading for SDSS took one of the 601 buses coming by and much to their surprise it left them off on the south side of 12th Avenue and the east side of 56th Street as it headed on its new route to Boundary Bay. They had to walk the remainder of the way, which is not a short jaunt. These students arrived just in time for the second bell,
understandably upset and stressed. Another set of students taking the 601 bus that was to arrive at 8:18 a.m. arrived at school about the same time as the aforementioned group. They too arrived agitated and distressed, having just made it to class on time. This is no way for students to start their day. Two of TransLink’s objectives as stated on its website are to “maximize ridership” and “encourage long-term ridership growth.” Neither of these objectives are being met
Editor: Last Friday morning I took my dogs by myself to the dog park. We had started our walk out in the field several yards from the parking lot. A couple was in the distance walking toward their car with a large Rottweiler. Their dog left their side and bounded out into the field, started growling around my dogs and around my legs. I called to the owners as their dog was not stopping: “Please come and get your dog.” They looked over but didn’t respond so I called again. As their dog con-
tinued with escalating aggressive behaviour toward my dogs, my anxiety rose. “Please get your dog,” I called, “I’m freaking out.” At last the woman started to walk over but she wasn’t pleased. I could barely say, “I’m afraid of dogs.” Her annoyed response was, “Well, you’re in a dog park,” as she marched past me to get her dog. I said, “I’m afraid of big dogs.” I don’t understand this attitude. Because of my background, I am very careful that my dogs don’t ever upset or worry any-
one and I would immediately control my dog if there was even the slightest indication that someone had a concern. I want to send a reminder to people that every dog owner is not the same and may not feel comfortable with your particular dog. And just because it’s a dog park doesn’t mean you can let your dogs do what they want. There is a notice posted for a reason. There are so many wonderful dog owners but that day I met some of the worst kind. Shirley Silva
ing our children to school becomes a financial burden for most. From the 2016 French immersion graduating class of Ladner Elementary, all but two students have moved on to South Delta Secondary. This percentage has been fairly consistent for years. One would expect the school district would like to ensure safe, affordable travel for students by providing a bus from even just one location in Ladner to SDSS. That responsibility has fallen to TransLink.
on this route. On the contrary, ridership is diminishing as parents are now driving their children to, adding to the congestion in Tsawwassen. To make matters worse, in addition to the 601 not even servicing our students, the price of sending the Ladner students, or students in different areas of Tsawwassen, to high school is $52.50 for a monthly pass. That’s close to 500 for the school year. Multiply that by more than one student in a household and the cost of send-
It is my sincere hope TransLink will listen to all the complaints that have been filed and reinstate the 601 bus that gets our students to their place of learning at an appropriate time. It is also my sincere hope the school district will have a look at consulting with TransLink on both the matter of scheduling and affordability. Transporting students safely, in a timely manner and at a reasonable cost, should not be, at best, a secondary thought. H. Fraser

learned in Sunday school — God is good, God is holy, God is just. God is indeed all these, but if we stop there, it is like saying this animal hoof print belongs to a deer and then walking away feeling satisfied as if we have learned all there is to know about deer. God is so much more. The Book of Psalms puts it this way: “How deep and vast are your thoughts, O God, they cannot be numbered.” Or labelled! Rezendes says catching or labelling an animal is not the point. “Tracking is about becoming intimate with animals’ lives.” Likewise, if we want to know the life of God, we should not stop our search tracking God just because we find a label we can use.

One or two inches of fresh snow offers the best conditions for tracking an animal, says Paul Rezendes, whose books about animal tracking were recently featured in a newsmagazine. I learned that it’s important to focus on the impressions left by an animal’s feet but also to watch for other signs like scratched tree bark or chewed foliage. Even after you’ve identified a track, there’s always more to observe, like how a lighter indentation on one side of a deer’s front hoof prints means it stopped to reach for a bite of green. “Once people label something, they think they know it,” Rezendes says. “They stop looking, and they stop learning. The leaves are falling, there’s a chill in the air — it’s time to prepare for hibernation. Luckily, there’s an opportunity to prepare yourself by getting a nice stack of new reading material to enjoy over the winter. All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner hosts a Giant Book Sale on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Any donations of used books would be gratefully received. All Saints is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year and is working toward updating the building at the corner of Arthur Drive and Ladner Trunk Road in order to continue running its free monthly community meal, Messy Church and other community events. The church wants its building to serve as a local hub for Ladner for many more years to come. Those with donations of books for the sale are asked to call 604-946-8413.

is hosting a special event next Wednesday to recognize the United Nations’ International Peace Day. Each year International Day of Peace is observed around the world on Sept. 21. The United Nations has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. The United Nations declared International Day of Peace in 1981. Worldwide observance of ceasefires and nonviolence are the usual happenings of the day. This year will mark the 35th World Peace Day. “We have every right to be proud of Delta as a peaceful community and we believe this is worth celebrating,” said Vickii Paramanathan, Rotarian chair for Peace Day.
Rotary and community leaders are planning to celebrate living in a peaceful community next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Peace Pole in Rotary Square at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. Rotarians, Tsawwassen First Nations and the Delta community will come together to celebrate peace as we know it and share their hopes for a peaceful world. The Rotary Club has sent out an invitation to the Delta School District and Corporation of Delta. It also invites the rest of the community to come out and take part. “There will be light refreshments and an opportunity to meet together to share ways we can make the world a better place,” added Paramanathan.

Whistler
Alaskan Malamute/Husky Mix Breed, Grey and White, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 1 year old)
Whistler came to the shelter through the Traveling Tails program. This rambunctious, active pup loves to run and is looking for an active, dog-savvy home. He is working on his basic commands and learning to keep his very large paws on the floor. Whistler would do best in a home that will continue his training and has experience with his breed. Not surprising, Whistler loves to chase cats and small animals so will need to find a home without them. He is very dog social and could live with another dog but due to his sheer size we feel that Whistler would do best in an adult only home as he could easily knock down children. If you have an active household and are looking to bring your new best friend along for the ride Whistler is your boy!

unners and walkers will help keep Terry Fox’s dream alive in Tsawwassen Sunday. The annual Terry Fox Run, put on by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, takes place with 5- and 10-km route options. Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, says local event chairperson Sara Kirby, who called Fox a Canadian hero, noting the fundraiser is a good way to keep his dream alive. It’s a non-competitive, family-orientated activity where participants can run, walk, blade or bike. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome, notes Kirby. The Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall will serve as the start and finish line. The shorter route heads into the Beach Grove neighbourhood and the longer route takes participants into Boundary Bay Regional Park. There will be music and food back at the mall afterwards, says Kirby. The event has drawn turnouts in the 300 range

This year’s fundraising event takes place Sunday, starting and finishing at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. the past few years, she says, adding it’s been great to see participants of all ages getting involved. The annual event, which is held at hundreds of locations across the country and has raised millions for cancer research, was
formed to commemorate Fox’s 1980 Marathon of Hope. Fox began his Marathon of Hope from St. John’s, Newfoundland and ran for 143 days, covering over 5,000 kilometres, with an artificial limb.
He had hoped to raise a dollar from each Canadian. He stopped outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. His cancer had spread to his lungs and Fox died when he was just 22. Onsite registration starts
at 9 a.m. while the run/ walk is scheduled for 10 a.m. Online registration is available at www.terryfox. ca. There is also a Facebook event page set up at http:// bit.ly/2cdbMnY.

Navigating the world in New York Visitors are best to consume the Big Apple in bite-size pieces or risk being overwhelmed RAY CHATELIN
Optimist contributor
The first thing you have to understand about New York City is that it is more than just another place to visit. New York is a world onto itself where the real and the illusory combine in one place and where you have to diminish its size before you can successfully navigate its charms. Paris, Tokyo and London come to mind as similar destinations. Like New York, they are more than mere cities. You will find anything from any other part of the world within their boundaries. And you can spend a lifetime at any of these places without ever having discovered all of what’s there. You don’t see New York, you experience what it has bit by bit. If you try to devour it at a single sitting, you end up with metropolitan indigestion. Break the city into parts and you will find it manageable. Go to a Yankees game and The Bronx becomes a village in which to explore. Attend the U.S. Open tennis tournament and the borough of Queens becomes your objective. And when you visit the Metropolitan Museum, you enter the world of Central Park and the Upper East Side.
The New York skyline can be seen from the Staten Island Ferry. Check out Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange and south Manhattan becomes your destination. Visiting Mulberry Street in Little Italy is like taking a trip to another country without having to pay for a plane ticket and Harlem, at the north end of the island, is the home of the famous Apollo Theatre. In Chinatown, in lower Manhattan, jewelry stores are on the south side of Canal Street and on Mott Street you can mix with locals and negotiate prices for almost anything.
Visitors to Greenwich Village usually expect to find the 1960s still in full bloom. Sorry about that, but while this small area below 14th Street and west of Broadway has been a mecca to the creative, rebellious and Bohemian for more than 100 years, starving artists can’t afford to live there any longer. However, you can still plan a day around the history of the place, its shopping, and its fine restaurants. One of New York City’s great assets is its easy access by foot and subway. It is mostly laid out like
a grid — uptown/downtown streets intersect with cross-town streets, making it easy to navigate even for the first-time visitor. If you choose your hotel or rented apartment wisely, it will make your time there memorable. Pick a location far from your main interests or your ability to tolerate noise, and it will be a long slog. Even though New York offers some of the best public transportation in the world, you don’t want to waste too much time just getting back and forth.
DRIVER/CARRIER AGENT WANTED The Delta Optimist is looking for a person to deliver bundles to carriers twice a week, every Wednesday and Friday. Must have reliable van (cargo preferred) or covered truck, a valid drivers license, and be willing to work late night/early mornings. If you want to be in the middle of the action, then find a hotel in the heart of the midtown area. While 42nd Street and Broadway may be where you’ll find the theatre district, you’ll be on a constant high, with all of your senses coming into play for every minute you’re there. It’s also the noisiest part of town. Want tranquility? Rent an apartment for a week or more in the Upper East Side, just off Central Park. There, you’ll find yourself in one of Manhattan’s finest neighbourhoods, where restaurants are
plentiful along Second Avenue and where you can window-shop to your heart’s content. It is a convenient location for exploring Central Park and the exhibits on Museum Mile. Madison Avenue is home to couture and designer shops and even if you can’t afford to buy anything, the window shopping is extraordinary. In New York, money will get you anything, but much activity can be found at affordable prices. A live theatre ticket is $100 for the latest plays on Broadway, but there’s also plenty of theatre in smaller off-Broadway venues at one-third that cost. Of course, New York is a shopper’s paradise. In SoHo, cutting edge designers show their wares. Or, if you have a child who deserves a special treat, try the renowned F.A.O. Schwartz. And, of course, there’s Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue to fill your bags. Take your time. Like a calorie-loaded meal, New York is best consumed in sections, slowly. The band is a stalwart member of the community arts scene south of the Fraser, with roots that can be traced back to the 1890s in historic Ladner. “Our members and friends adore the Delta Concert Band, so we thought what better way to celebrate the new season of TALK than with popular, contemporary and Broadway music from these beloved musicians,” said TALK chairperson Dr. Robin Heath. The Delta Concert Band will perform at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 at KPU Surrey, 12666-72nd Ave. The concert will be approximately one hour, followed by a break and the AGM at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free to TALK members, or $10 for nonmembers. TALK has just released its fall program of courses as well as topics for its Philosophers’ Corners, which run the gamut from climate refugees and obesity, to the future of libraries and the zombie apocalypse. “We strive for variety and we have really accomplished it this year; where else can you learn about the history of Islam one week, and what it means to be a zombie the next?” asked Heath. Heath stresses that there are no quizzes, grades or prerequisites – just the

joy of learning something new and meeting interesting people. Although attendees are encouraged to share their own perspectives on topics, the sessions will also appeal to anyone interested in listening to new and often controversial ideas and learning new things. “It’s all very civilized, but that isn’t code for boring, Heath emphasizes. “In fact, the opposite is true.” For example, KPU anthropology instructor Dr. Sam Migliore will give a presentation at KPU Surrey on Oct. 29 about zombies in folklore and popular culture. He will discuss what it means to be a zombie and what zombies can teach us about ourselves. Retired pilot Gordon Wilson will bring his experiences flying secret missions for the North American Aerospace Defence system (NORAD) to a TALK session on Nov. 29 at KPU Surrey. Wilson’s presentation, NORAD and the Russian Threat, will explore the various diminishing and increasing forms of Russian threats. For a full schedule of TALK events, including session overviews, visit kpu.ca/talk. TALK events are aimed at those who are 50 or older. Most courses are $15, in addition to the $10 annual membership fee. There is a suggested minimum donation of $2 for each Philosophers’ Corner.

with chronic health conditions. “When you have a chronic health condition, you’re going through challenges every single day,” said UVic professor Patrick McGowan. The coaches provide phone support on a weekly basis for three months and in some cases six months. Coaches can help participants choose goals and actions to better manage their health and help identify and problem-solve

barriers. Program coordinator Sofia Khouw said the volunteer coaches (who don’t necessarily have to have a chronic condition to be a coach) act as an extra person to bounce ideas off and can help motivate participants. Charles Labun, a health coach with a similar program, said seeing the growth in participants is rewarding. A two-day health coach training workshop will be held at the UVic office in
Ladner on Tuesdays, Sept. 20 and Sept. 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Coaches will learn selfmanagement support and communication skills. Registration for the workshop is required. Ice Hawks rebuild with youth
With rookie-loaded line-up Delta earns first win of season in double overtime MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta- optimist .com
The Pacific Junior Hockey League is certainly set-up to enhance player development and Darren Naylor intends to take full advantage of it. With a 44-game regular season determining which six of the eight teams will qualify for the playoffs come February, there is certainly no urgency in September. Naylor is in his first fullyear as head coach of the Delta Ice Hawks after stepping behind the bench late last season and promptly guiding the team to a first round playoff upset of the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. Now, he has the opportunity to shape the roster himself and he has leaned on youth in a big way. The Ice Hawks have a whopping 13 17-year-olds on their roster and all but one of them are rookies. Complimenting the young group is a handful of veterans including standout third-year goalie Jacob Latrace, along with rugged defensemen Cam Cuthbert and Mark Trotman. After losses to North Vancouver and Abbotsford to start the season, the young Ice Hawks produced a gritty 3-2 double overtime win over the Richmond Sockeyes on
Delta Ice Hawks goaltender Jacob Latrace makes one of his 48 saves on the night off Richmond Sockeyes Brodie Crawford during a 3-2 overtime win on Tuesday in Ladner. Tuesday night in Ladner. South Delta rookie Jordan Bogress notched the winner and Latrace was terrific at the other end with 48 saves. “That was a big win for our team,” said Naylor. “We are young and that was a real gut battle out there. “We got goaltending tonight. We went with (a rookie) in our first game and Latrace hadn’t been skating a lot. That was the Latrace we saw in last year’s playoffs and if he keeps playing like that, we
will be in good shape with a young and skilled team.” Naylor showed just how much he will be leaning on youth when AP blueliner Magnus Cheung logged a ton of ice time, including long stretches when Delta was two-men short. His reward was being offered a full-time playing card after the game. Cheung doesn’t turn 16 until later this month. “He’s not an AP after tonight,” smiled Naylor. “I coached him for four years and he knows my systems
and what I like. I kept the older guys I wanted to keep but I am really familiar with this (1999-2000) age group. It’s the age group my son grew up with and I know these kids. “I know their capabilities and our upside is going to be really big. The first 10 games are really just a feel out and I think we are going to shoot the moon.” The Ice Hawks are already dealing with a serious injury. Team captain Quinten Wideski has been sidelined since a knee on
knee collision in a pre-season game. He was scheduled to see a specialist this week. “That is a big loss for us,” added Naylor. “He was a big part of my plan as a leader. I inherited him (as a captain) last year and he is one of the best I have had. We are hoping for the best but I plan on putting him on the bench.” Delta travels to Port Moody on Saturday night and is back home Tuesday when the Grandview Steelers visit at 7:35 p.m.
Calvert leads Sun Devils to win down south MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Michael Calvert didn’t require a lot of playing time to put up big numbers in the South Delta Sun Devils’ season opening 41-26 win over the Lakewood High Cougars on Friday night in Arlington, WA. The Grade 11 standout, who spilt the quarterbacking duties with Ben McDonald, completed 15 of 20 passes for 248 yards and three
touchdowns. He also added 129 yards rushing, along with another major, on just 11 carries. Calvert played the second and fourth quarters, while McDonald, who is just in Grade 9, threw for 110 yards and a TD during his time under centre. Despite the outcome, head coach Ray Moon says his team has to be much better when it continues its pre-season schedule Saturday at home to Abbotsford’s WJ Mouat Hawks at 1:30 p.m. It will be the final tune-up before
conference play where the Devils will get a steady diet of elite opponents. “We were not crisp enough and, really, all over the map with a lot of penalties at inopportune times,” said Moon. “There were plenty of first game jitters which you expect to see but we need to clean that all up this week.” Senior Grant McDonald finished the game with eight tackles, one sack and another tackle for a loss. On the other side of the ball, he had 10 catches for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
