Mega mall set to open next week

Tsawwassen Mills expected to draw huge crowd to TFN on Wednesday SANDOR GYARMATI

Complete with a mural-covered ceiling, Bass Pro Shops, at approximately 180,000 square feet, is the largest of Tsawwassen Mills’ 16 anchor tenants.

It’s going to change the face of South Delta as well as the retail landscape of B.C. After more than two years of construction, Tsawwassen Mills will finally open its doors at the Tsawwassen First Nation next week. The 1.2-million-square-foot shopping centre at the corner of Highway 17 and 52nd Street will feature 200 stores, including 16 anchors, as well as an 1,100-seat food hall and several restaurants. Shoppers are expected to be lined up well in advance of the grand opening, which is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. The biggest of the anchors, Bass Pro Shops, opens its doors a day earlier, on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. Unlike anything in the Lower Mainland, Tsawwassen Mills follows the model of two other Ivanhoe Cambridge projects, CrossIron Mills north of Calgary and Vaughan Mills north of Toronto. “It’s really unlike any other shopping centre in British Columbia and I would say the best way to describe it is that it’s

Mark Fenwick a hybrid concept, which offers this great mix of premium fashion brands and outlet stores,” said general manager Mark Fenwick. “There will be approximately 30 outlet stores and a number of first-to-market stores as well, and then there’s the dining and entertainment,” said Fenwick. “So it’s going to be something very different than we have seen here in the province and will be a great destination for shoppers from all over the Lower Mainland and beyond.” FASHION: see Page 3

Mall finally finds a home

Ivanhoe Cambridge had been looking for Lower Mainland location for years SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It took years but they finally found a suitable and ideally located property for a major shopping centre to serve the Lower Mainland and beyond. That’s what Daniel Fournier, chairman and CEO of Ivanhoe Cambridge, had to say about building a destination mall at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Fournier told the Optimist the company

had its sights set on the Vancouver area for long time, but the land was simply not available, either close to the city or in the suburbs. “I think we looked at just about everywhere. It was very difficult,” said Fournier, noting the company was running across the same problem in Quebec. Ivanhoe Cambridge is behind the huge CrossIron Mills shopping mall north of Calgary and Vaughan Mills outside of Toronto,

both of which acted as a model for Tsawwassen Mills, which is set to open next Wednesday. Having Coast Salish art throughout, including a stunning piece at the entrance designed by Tsawwassen First Nation Chief Bryce Williams, the mall is being described as a unique project in terms of the variety of retailers and how it functions as a destination for shoppers. Several retailers, including Bass Pro Shops, Saks Off 5th and Pro Hockey

Life, will open their first B.C. stores at Tsawwassen Mills. The mall is also focused on providing an entertainment experience, including an aquatic inspired play park for kids, interactive touch-screen displays to engage children, big screen TVs to watch sporting events, mobile phone chargers and more. Bass Pro Shops has a 12-lane bowling alley, while the West 49 store will feature a 7,000-square-foot skatepark.

The 1,100-seat food hall has West Coast themed architecture with 50-foot ceilings and large skylights. The design inspiration came primarily from the Granville Island Public Market, heavy timber structures with industrial influences, and an overall eclectic hospitality design. There will be 15 food hall vendors as well as restaurants Milestones, Montana’s, Boston Pizza and Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill, which is located in Bass Pro Shops.

Artwork is prominent throughout Tsawwassen Mills, the 1.2-million-square-foot mall set to open next Wednesday morning.

Fashion-oriented mall will have five themed areas

CONTINUED from Page 1 The mall will have five themed areas: Outdoor Life, Fashion, City, Nature and Coast Salish. “It’s not just fashion but it will be a dominant fashion destination. Our centre will be the largest shopping centre that has outlet stores under one roof,” Fenwick said. As far as the customer base, it’s expected shoppers will come from throughout Greater Vancouver as well as Vancouver Island, the Okanagan, Washington

state and beyond. “If they’re coming to the Lower Mainland, they’ll be able to add this to their destination or make it their destination. It’s got a lot to offer,” Fenwick added. Marketing director Christina Shier said tourists will be a big part of the clientele and the mall will be working within that sector to promote itself. The mall will also have a shuttle running from the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. Shoppers are being

given incentive to line up early for the grand opening next Wednesday as a $50 gift card will go to the first 1,000 people. There are other contests, including one shopper winning a $10,000 shopping spree, while individual stores are running their own promotions. A pre-launch campaign called “Love Everything About It” has been well underway to promote the centre. The opening will also feature live entertainment and giveaways, part of the mall’s grand open-

ing week, which runs until Oct. 10. While the mall has a capacity of 200 stores once fully leased, it will start with 180 retailers. Several additional stores have already been confirmed but will be opening at a later date. It’s anticipated approximately 3,000 full-time and part-time jobs will be created, however as opening day approaches, mall tenants are still trying to fill out their employee rosters. There is a shuttle for staff from the Scott Road

SkyTrain station to help encourage new hires. Located next door to Tsawwassen Commons, which will be opening later in phases, Tsawwassen Mills will be open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Thanksgiving Day, the last day of the grand opening celebration, the mall closes at 7 p.m. For more information, including how to access the mall by public transit, check out www.tsawwassenmills.com.

From the Desk of…

Ian Paton Ladner, BC

An Open Letter to the Residents of Delta South As you may have heard, last week I was nominated to represent the BC Liberal Party in next May’s provincial election. I want to take this opportunity to tell you why I chose to run, and why I want to represent this community in the BC Legislature. My life, and my family’s life, has been about being of service to Delta. We have an incredible community, and a way of life that is the envy of much of the rest of the province. We live here in a beautiful balance between urban, suburban, and rural lifestyle. We are surrounded by nature, the ocean, wetlands, farmlands, and framed by the Vancouver skyline and Coastal Mountains. I love this place. I have a story on every corner. I read in the media that I had slammed the incumbent MLA in my speech. Not true, and let me be clear about this, because my campaign is not about trash talking or denigrating my opponents. I want to offer a positive, productive alternative; an alternative that can deliver. So let me be clear about why I believe I am best suited to replace Vicki Huntington. To paraphrase William Shakespeare, “I come here not to condemn my opponent, but to thank her for her service.” Why? Because more than 10,000 people voted on two occasions for a loud and vocal voice in the legislature. People in Delta South clearly felt alienated. They felt their concerns were not important. I share those concerns, and I can be that voice. And anyone that has heard me speak, well, normally after awhile they would rather I stopped talking! Vicki has served eight years as an independent, and she has served with passion and with her heart in the right place. We now need someone who can take up the real and passionate concerns of our community, and implement them by being a part of a strong government. You can bank on me to be a loud, distracting voice in Victoria. A strong one too. Our community’s concerns can be acted upon. I’m going to be the one yelling inside the tent, not outside. And I will keep yelling until our voice is heard. That’s who I am, and that’s what my campaign’s all about. Please join me in voting for a change next May 9th.

Ian Paton P.S. Thanks to the hundreds of Deltan’s who signed up and voted at the nomination meeting. Whether you voted for me or not, I appreciate that you have become part of the political process. Our community is richer for your involvement!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attracted a huge crowd when they made a stop at Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver last Sunday morning.

Fan finally gets to meet Royal Couple

Tsawwassen’s Pamela Turriff wasn’t going to let Prince William and his wife Kate leave Vancouver last weekend without receiving her flowers. A long-time fan of the Royal Family, Turriff stayed at the Pan Pacific last Saturday night in order to get a prime viewing spot at Jack Poole Plaza the following morning. After securing a place at the fence, Turriff ended up disappointed when she wasn’t in the aisle that

the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked along. Undaunted and determined to hand the flowers she had left in water overnight to Kate, Turriff decided to follow the couple to its next public stop at the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station. She’s glad she did. After being told by other Royal watchers that she was in an area the couple was unlikely to stop at, Turriff changed locations and it paid dividends. She said she was able to give the flowers to Kate and shake Prince William’s

hand. “It was lovely to meet them. I’m blown away that I met them,” she said. “She was very nice when she thanked me for them,” said Turriff. She said she also shook hands with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was there along with his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau. It’s far from the first time that Turriff, a longtime resident of Tsawwassen, has seen members of the Royal Family. Turriff said she and her parents went to Britain for the Royal Jubilee in 1977

and also went to see the Queen during her appearance at BC Place in 1983. She saw Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their visit to Vancouver for Expo 86. Turriff said her 89-yearold father, who’s Scottish, met the future King George VI as a young boy in 1936 at a castle just outside of Stranraer and now 80 years later she’s met another future king. The week-long visit to B.C. by Prince William and Kate marks their second trip to Canada. Their children accompanied them.

t’s hard to believe the time has finally come. The notion that out-of-theway Tsawwassen would become home to a pair of shopping malls as big as any in the province seemed far-fetched when the vision was unveiled almost five-and-a-half years ago. Building 1.75 million square feet of retail space on land acquired by the Tsawwassen First Nation in its 2009 treaty was not only an extremely ambitious undertaking, but so out of context with the area it almost seemed surreal. Voices of doubt greeted the announcement by the TFN and its two development partners, Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group, and were bolstered by a lack of construction activity on the site for the better part of three years. With tenant news virtually non-existent and the opening date pushed back twice, it made many question whether the project was indeed viable I didn’t necessarily share the concerns, partly because the TFN’s development partners have done these kinds of projects countless times before and partly because outlet malls are often in relatively remote locations. From Woodburn, Oregon, to Edinburgh, Indiana, to Gilroy, California, I’ve visited my fair share of small towns that play host to what the industry calls “destination” malls, so the concept of the province’s biggest shopping complex being located in Tsawwassen didn’t seem that implausible. Nevertheless, they’ve taken their sweet time to get to this point. The period from that initial announcement back in the spring of 2011 to next week’s grand opening of Tsawwassen Mills (Tsawwassen Commons will open in phases over the next few months) reminded me of when Vancouver was awarded the Winter Olympics a half dozen years ahead of the 2010 Games. You knew they were coming, but it seemed like they’d never arrive. The Olympics are now a distant memory and by this time next month I imagine the retail behemoth in our back yard will have become our new normal. If you had said a decade ago that Tsawwassen would become home to the largest shopping complex in B.C., you would have more than likely been asked to take a sobriety test, but here we are just five days away from that reality. Get ready for the world to show up on our doorstep.

Tunnel work is abandoned in favour of port-friendly span

T

he Sept. 21 issue of the Optimist carried a twopage report about the bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel, now sometimes referred to as a Christy Clark vanity project. The bridge is moving through its planning stages as the opposition in some quarters is building. Only one mayor — our own Lois Jackson — supports it. In fact, Jackson was on board the day the premier announced it in 2013. Some months later, after I filed an FOI request looking for data that supported the decision, I was informed that no documents were found in the premier’s office. In 2007, after reinforcing the inside of the tunnel and installing an early warning system for earthquakes, the provincial government decided not to complete the strengthening of the tunnel. An FOI has uncovered that a deal might have been “reached” at that time between Victoria and the port authority to remove the tunnel. If so, the public consultations of 2012 and 2013 were a farce. One argument against the tunnel is its age. There are many tunnels elsewhere that are older and are in good condition. True, repairs and equipment replace-

Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON

ment is needed, but that is normal. Earthquake standards have toughened since the tunnel was designed and built, but the strengthening and warning system addressed much of that newer standard. It would have been comparable to other upgrades such as bridges, hospitals and schools. There is no debate about congestion. All the other Metro Vancouver mayors and the Metro Vancouver board want less emphasis on a big bridge and more on transit as a means to reduce present and future congestion. They say the bridge will simply move the congestion to another point — likely in Richmond. The bridge favours cars while we need to learn how to move people.

The bridge will have massive towers sitting on unstable soils and stretching way up into the air hundreds of feet. With the shaking from a quake, how much wobble at the top of the tower can the cables absorb without snapping and plunging the deck, cars and people into the river? The question has been asked but no answer is available. The cost — at $3.5 billion or more — is another issue. Past practice says the user — you and me — will pay a toll now speculated at $7.50 each way — $15 for a trip to Richmond or Vancouver. By tolling, the provincial government can proclaim it cost the taxpayer nothing. As the bridge construction gets underway, there will be a three-level interchange built at Steveston Highway. Having all the present traffic traversing the construction site leaves me wondering how bad the congestion will be for five years. Is this the best way to spend billions of dollars? Is the bridge the first part of a massive interstate to the edge of Vancouver where it will be reduced to a sixlane street? Time to talk to the mayor? Valuable Earthwise work must be able to continue

Editor: Re: Earthwise farm in the way, Sept. 23 I’d like to add my name to a long list of Earthwise supporters, something I know I should have done long ago. It’s been hard to know where to begin this letter, or end it, for that matter, and to keep it succinct at the same time. I’ve had an allotment plot at Earthwise for five years. While I must say I’m sorry I’m about to lose it next month to the

Southlands development, I knew it was going to happen eventually. But I can’t give it up before telling the powers that be at municipal hall that being a part of Earthwise, as a gardener, a master organic gardener student and an occasional volunteer, has been a wonderful experience. I’ve had the good fortune to meet, learn from and become friends with an exceptional and unique group of people who care deeply for each other and

about the work they do in our community. Earthwise once figured strongly in the plans for the new Southlands development. It’s important to me, as a resident of Tsawwassen and someone who has benefitted on so many levels from Earthwise, that Delta honours and respects its promises to the people of Delta, and Earthwise, by allowing it to continue to do the good work it does. Shari Nystrom

Editor: A few weeks ago we visited Canada from England and stayed with friends in Tsawwassen. One day we decided to take the 601 bus, which we got on at 8A Avenue, to the SkyTrain station in Richmond to take us into Vancouver city centre. It was much better than driving to and through the city. When we returned to

Richmond, we got on the 601 to Tsawwassen, but the bus did not take the same route as the one we caught in the morning. Instead, it went to Boundary Bay where we then had to walk to 8A Avenue, which took an hour. I feel if the bus has the same number, it should go on the same route. We were told that locals were having the same

problem, but they knew where to get off. We also heard that the local high school pupils are having to walk further as the early bus doesn’t go near their high school. If the bus goes on a different route, it should have a different number. But I must say we really do enjoy Canada. This was our fourth visit and I am sure it will not be our last. David Allen

Trucks headed to Southlands should show same goodwill as developer

Editor: I am one of the supporters of the Southlands development for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact the developer is very committed to enhancing our community while taking into account environmental concerns. This stands in contrast to the unsafe driving behaviour exhibited by the semi drivers along

56th Street. The two main issues, which do not enhance our community, are concerned with speed and double lane occupancy. As some drivers travel north, they reach speeds well beyond our speed limit. People making left turns onto 16th Avenue are in danger and trucks running yellow lights due to excessive speed are putting all at risk.

Secondly, trucks driving two abreast down 56th Street seems to be unsafe and inconsiderate to all others. These drivers need to demonstrate the same goodwill and sense of shared community the developer himself has repeatedly modeled for them. Perhaps some policing of these driving infractions would help. Graeme Swan

Boundary Bay residents are worried got a decade of dust storms Bus should take same route both ways they’ve COPD, and particulates in I understand there are Editor: My wife and I are long-term residents of Boundary Bay and we have never been bothered by the air quality. However, the construction taking place at the south end of the Southlands is generating a dust storm. The bulldozing and traffic on the farmlands are causing dust clouds that are being carried by the wind to the residents of Boundary Bay.

Getting the results YOU want from experienced dentists who

no bylaws that require the contractors to limit or control the dust caused by construction. This dust poses a hazard to the contractors and residents downwind from the construction site. Other municipalities require contractors to limit dust by constructing silt fences or other barriers or by spraying water on the construction site. My partner suffers from

the air aggravate her condition. We are not the only Boundary Bay residents who are affected by this dust. This construction activity has just started and will continue for the next 10 years. I request that Delta council investigate this issue and encourage the contractors to be respectful of our air quality. Bill Didur

Domestic Short Hair, Black, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 6 years old)

Bling Bling came to the shelter as a trapped stray after he ventured into a trap at a colony we were trapping. Bling Bling had a broken tooth when he arrived at the shelter and his owners were unable to claim him. Bling Bling has had a root canal to save his fractured tooth and has had full blood work and a dental cleaning to bring his health up to date. This handsome cat doesn’t seem to like the company of other cats and would probably do best in a home with no dogs or young children. A home in a safe neighbourhood where Bling Bling could venture outside would be suitable for this kitty. Bling Bling is the quiet, silent type that enjoys head butts and petting. His quiet nature makes him a very endearing soul to be around.

used in a home goes toward space heating and 24 per cent of a home’s total energy use goes towards heating water. Taking steps like programming a thermostat to 17 °C for when away and asleep, and no higher than 20 °C when home and awake and being efficient with water use — both hot and cold — are important ways customers can save on heating costs and also help conserve water. The initiative with the Corporation of Delta is one of the ways FortisBC is working directly with customers to address their energy use questions and provide simple, effective ways to save. Delta residents are also encouraged to take advantage of FortisBC programs on high-efficiency natural gas space heating systems, water heaters, insulation and more. Community Pipe band plays at memorial

Tsawwassen street party marks Canada In A Day

Members of police departments from across B.C. gathered at Brockton Oval in Stanley Park last Sunday to mark the 19th annual BC Law Enforcement Memorial. The skirl of bagpipes filled the air as the Delta Police Pipe Band, and police pipe bands from Vancouver and Seattle, along with several hundred police officers, marched from HMCS Discovery to Brockton Oval where they played solemn tribute to their fallen comrade. Delta police Chief Neil Dubord attended the service, which was co-hosted by the Delta and Vancouver police departments.

Canadians across the country took part in Canada In A Day, including in Tsawwassen where Wallace Avenue residents threw a street party. With a municipal permit in hand, invitations were sent out and tents were erected on the closed street. Well over 60 people attended the Saturday, Sept. 10 party that stretched from the afternoon into the evening. Name tags were essential as even though many people know their neighbours by sight, names were a whole different ball game.

Everyone brought an appetizer and beverages — by wheelbarrow, wagon or simply by hand — as well as a couple of chairs, while hot dogs and smokies were on the barbecue courtesy of Marla and Allan. Horse racing games were held on the street, called by the very capable Rick, while music was supplied by DJ Murray. Canada In A Day will be a CTV special created entirely from footage made by Canadians in one day. It will be a celebration of Canada for the country’s 150th anniversary.

what often passes for truth — or at least what we want to be true. The context of Pontus Pilate’s question was Jesus’ trial. In response to a question from Pilate, Jesus said: “the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” (John 18:37). Perhaps his boldest claim was that he doesn’t just tell the truth — he is the truth. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). In a world of slidingscale truth, there is someone who is absolute truth. Reach Mike at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Pontus Pilate asked that question of Jesus 2,000 years ago. We’re obviously still asking it today. I’m writing this the morning after the first U.S. presidential debate between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. Fact checking the claims made by both candidates has been a dominant theme in the reporting of the debate. Many news outlets had teams on hand to analyze what was said. CNN’s Reality Check Team evaluated the statements of both candidates using a scale: true; mostly true; true, but misleading; false; and it’s complicated. Seriously? sawwassen’s Mike Dopud says he’s always been fascinated with movies and that he’s always wanted to be an actor. “But it was never something I thought I could do growing up in the suburbs of Montreal,” he says. He recalls watching films like Mad Max and Escape from New York with his brother. “Mad Max was the movie for me that really made that shift where I was like, ‘I would love to be in that world one day.’”

Taking a look at Dopud’s IMDB page shows he’s not only made it into the TV and film acting world but has turned his stay there into a lasting one. He’s recently been filming locally with roles in TV series Arrow and iZombie while earlier this year he was filming in Auckland, New Zealand for a film titled Project Eden. His extensive acting credits that stretch back into the 1990s include roles in major movies such as X-Men: Days of Future Past and Man of Steel as well as TV series such as Strange Empire, Cedar Cove, Arctic Air and Continuum.

The 48-year-old, who lives in Boundary Bay, says doing your job goes a long way. “I was very fortunate when I came into this industry doing stunt work, I learned how to be prompt, make sure you’re there, don’t screw around and be really professional. That’s carried over to my acting career,” he says. “I bring the same thing to the table.” One of Dopud’s memorable roles was playing Vic Hadfield in the 2006 twopart miniseries Canada Russia ’72 that aired on CBC. “It was such a thrill to be part of that,” he says.

Hadfield was a member of Team Canada as the group of NHL pros faced off against a skilled Russian squad in the 1972 Summit Series. Dopud, who briefly played in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and also with the Columbus Chill in East Coast Hockey League, recalls that working on that miniseries was like being part of a family and having teammates. “It was almost like being back playing sports again.” Dopud, who started off as a background performer, says having a pro sports history ended up provid-

ing a great transition into stunt work. “Slowly but surely, I started getting more and more work.” Although he’s still doing fight scenes, these days Dopud is focusing on his acting, saying with a chuckle that he’s gotten older and is trying to “preserve the body as much as I can.” He’ll be making an appearance on the CBC show Mr. D this season. He calls it a great experience as it marks the first time he’s worked with his son Dane. Follow Dopud on Twitter and Instagram @ dopudmike.

Delta Nature to host Plastic Oceans presentation Delta Nature presents Plastic Oceans - The Devil in the Deep Blue Sea next week in Tsawwassen. The free presentation for all ages by Emma Langson of the Plastic Oceans Foundation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at

7:30 p.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church, corner of 56th Street and 6th Avenue. “Plastic Oceans’ mission is to change the world’s attitude to plastic in one generation,” says Langson. “We are chal-

lenging society’s perception that this indestructible substance can be treated as disposable.” The group’s documentary feature film, A Plastic Ocean, highlights both the problems and the potential solutions. Langson

says once people become aware of the threat to human health, it will become a personal choice to prevent plastic waste from entering the environment. She will be showing clips from the film, which has been nominated for

Best Feature Documentary at the Raindance Film Festival in London, UK. Her involvement with Plastic Oceans came from her natural interest in the marine environment, having lived by the coast in several countries.

or travelers that like plenty of sea days and no flying, these roundtrip Co-Founder Vancouver sailings to Hawaii are the perfect fit. You & President, really have the time to take advantage of the 5 star ameniCruisePlus ties aboard these lovely Holland America ships – whether enjoying the spa, casino or specialty restaurants or perhaps playing cards, dancing, reading books or taking in the nightly shows. The ms Zaandam (1460 passengers) does an 18 day sailing on April 26th. I recommend an ocean-view stateroom which goes for $2899 CAD pp including taxes and a $75pp onboard credit. On October 1st, the larger, predominantly balcony ship, the ms Eurodam (which I just got off in Europe and looks fabulous after it’s significant upgrade) does a 16 night sailing. $3949 CAD pp gets you a mid-category balcony stateroom, a $175pp onboard credit and taxes. Both sailings go to Honolulu, Lahaina, Hilo and Kona. The Zaandam comes back via Seattle and Victoria (ask about disembarking there if you want) and the Eurodam also visits Kauai. DAVE FRINTON

Sidekick opens season with Mending Fences The Sidekick Players Club will open its 20th season next month at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre with Norm Foster’s poignant and hilarious Mending Fences. The play deals with such issues as sour separations, the need for reconciliation, alcoholism as a result of a partner’s infidelity, being an uncommunicative human being and how to repair the damage after many years. Mending Fences is really a play about how the failings of parents are handed down to subsequent generations of parents. In other hands, this could be a dark and sombre play but it’s not as Foster knows, innately, people like to laugh at themselves and their fail-

ings. In fact, he further realizes we have to laugh in order to heal. The story centres, more or less, around Harry, a Saskatchewan farmer, divorced from Lori, with whom he had a son, Drew, neither of whom have been in touch since their leaving him 20 years before. In his present life, Harry has a relationship with his rancher neighbour, Gin, whose husband died some time ago. The irreverent Foster does not shy away from giving his characters lines that are not quite politically correct, reflecting accurately the tone and truth of those characters. Mending Fences portrays human drama that is relevant to anyone who has ever been a parent, a son or a daugh-

ter. The cast includes Joe Zucchiatti (Harry), who appeared as Matt in Looking last season, Jeff Pannell (Drew), who has graced the Sidekick stage several times, including the diabolical Rote in last season’s Wait Until Dark, and Vicki Dodwell (Gin), who returns after a successful run as the snooty Lisette DeCourval in last season’s Les Belles Soeurs. Director Todd-Elliot Gates will be assisted by Cathy Collis. Mending Fences opens Oct. 6 and runs until Oct. 22 with performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Oct. 16. Guild show pays tribute to Margaret Elliot Our Favourite Ones opens month-long run at Gallery 1710 with reception next Thursday NOREEN FAIRWEATHER

Optimist contributor

Starting with an evening reception at Gallery 1710 on Thursday, Oct. 6, the South Delta Artists Guild will welcome a monthlong show of members’ art to honour the memory and legacy of the late artist (and author) Margaret Armstrong Elliot. Our Favourite Ones is a tribute to their friend and much-admired fellow artist by guild members invited to show a favourite work in any medium except photography, and the result promises to be an outstanding display of individual skills, experience, talent and imagination. The Elliot family will attend and has donated $1,000 in prize money. Jurors will award $350 for first place, $250 for second, $200 for third and two honourable mention awards of $100 each, noted prior to the reception, which runs from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m.

Guild member and outstanding pastel artist Catherine Sheppard works on her tiger portrait for the upcoming Our Favourite Ones show. Elliot was the eldest of five children of the Armstrong family from Eskdale in England’s Lake District, so beautiful it became a national park. Even though she pur-

sued a professional life in medical technology and teaching biology, her interest in art bubbled away. Half a lifetime later, she settled in Vancouver, and

then Ladner, joining the Federation of Canadian Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and achieving full signature status in both. She also joined the

South Delta Artists Guild. Elliot loved drawing and watercolour, particularly figurative work and landscape, and greatly admired the work of English watercolour genius J.M.W.

Turner. Through shows, competitions and awards, Elliot’s work became widely known, enjoyed and collected. About four years ago, she began writing a family history, intended just for her daughters and two young Tsawwassen granddaughters. Given her outstanding memory, it grew into a 250-page illustrated book, Native Of Eskdale, just published, which seamlessly blends the history and beauty of the Lake District with the warmth and busyness of her life there from 1931 to the late 1950s. Our Favourite Ones runs Oct. 6 to 30 in Gallery 1710, adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. • The next general meeting of the guild is on Monday, Oct. 3 when artist Michael Abraham is guest speaker. Visitors are welcome.

Celebrating Delta’s Aviation Legacy On September 18, 2016, Delta Council and Chief Administrative Officer George V. Harvie rededicated the new Boundary Bay Airport Cenotaph and officially opened the Air Cadet Commemorative Pathway to the public. The monument and pathway were created to mark the 75th Anniversary of both the Boundary Bay Airport and the Air Cadet League of Canada. Mayor Lois E. Jackson and Delta Council invite you to the Boundary Bay Airport to step back in time along the pathway to read and view photographs that tell the history of Boundary Bay Airport over the last 75 years.

Sunday service goes to the dogs All creatures welcome to Blessing of the Animals in Ladner’s Memorial Park

All Saints Anglican and Ladner United Church will join together to host this year’s Blessing of the Animals service Sunday in Ladner. Many of us feel our lives are incomplete without our animal friends. These companions can be the barrier that stands between us and loneliness, isolation, a sedentary lifestyle and even the ability to perform necessary tasks in stressful environments. “Last year each church had its own service which seemed to go against our desire to encourage closer relationships in our community,” said All Saints Rev. Elizabeth Northcott. “The love of our pets and the joy they bring into our lives is a great way to bring people together in thankfulness as we celebrate one of the many ways God blesses us each day.” The service will take place at 2 p.m. at Memorial Park, or at Ladner United (4960-48th Ave.) if it rains.

All creatures great and small are welcome at the short service but Northcott

joked, “Eight-legged friends may be blessed from afar.”

BCIT students talk plants at Cammidge

Last fall and winter three BCIT students spent several months mapping the distribution of invasive plants in Boundary Bay Regional Park. On Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m., the public is invited to Cammidge House to hear the students present the results and share their experience. Nathan Loewen, Michael Koziura and Melissa Hoffman, who recently completed the fish, wildlife and recreation diploma program, made weekly trips to the park to seek out invasive plants. The project, supported by the Boundary Bay Park Association and Metro Vancouver, is part of the Stewardship Action Plan, which will assist in the management of invasive species to protect the park’s biological diversity. Canadians looking to rebound B.C. Major Midget Hockey League club shows promise to open new season

MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It was an encouraging opening weekend performance by a team looking to return to the upper echelon of the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. The Greater Vancouver Canadians are coming off a subpar season by their standards that saw them scrape into the playoffs with a 14-206 record then get dominated in a quarter-final series sweep by eventual champion Valley West Hawks. Seven players have returned and seem determined to get the Canadians back to their winning ways. They battled perennial powerhouse Vancouver Northwest Giants to a 3-3 tie on Saturday night in North Vancouver, then saw a comeback fall short the next morning at the Richmond Olympic Oval in a 5-4 defeat. Fourth-year assistant Mike Twaites has assumed the head coaching duties for now while head coach/GM Phil Alalouf is on the mend from ankle surgery. “It was good to see the boys come together and get at it this weekend,” said Twaites. “There is still a lot of work to do out there. We had a couple of breakdowns (Sunday) that resulted in some quick goals for them and we had to play catch-up the rest of the way. “We showed we can compete with them. It’s good to get the schedule going and now we have everybody back and practising together.” Team captain Scott Atkinson recently rejoined the team after being a late cut of the Western Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil Kings. The 16-year-old is one of seven forwards in the Canadians line-up who are 6-feet or better. The impressive size, playing an aggressive forechecking system, is going to have a big part in the team’s success and it was evident against the Giants. Seven goals in the weekend series against an elite opponent was encouraging for a team that averaged just 2.5 per contest a year ago. Twaites says the team will be leaning offensively on Atkinson, along with 15-year-old rookies Henry Rybinski and Sasha Mutala.

Greater Vancouver Canadians Michael Matson heads up ice in Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Giants. Other returning forwards include 16-year-old Richmond products Michael Araki-Young and Chris Douglas, along with 17-year-old South Delta alumni Noah Kelly and Michael Matson. The blueline features second-years Thomas Von Schoenberg and Nathan Kelly, while Lukas Shaw is back between the pipes to share the crease load with Nic Hoem. “We have some great size and we just have to use it a little bit more to our advantage,” continued Twaites. “The boys love to get (in

opponents’) way, create a little havoc and space for themselves. We have a good of players who have come into the team and a returning core we can work around.” The Canadians must also take advantage of a top ended loaded home schedule coming out of the gate. They play their next six games at the Richmond Olympic Oval, starting Friday against the Okanagan Rockets which is part of the league’s Showcase Weekend.

Ice Hawks comeback falls just short against Panthers Delta Ice Hawks came up just short in their second comeback attempt in as many games. The Hawks spotted the visiting Port Moody Panthers a 3-0 lead on Tuesday night on their way to a 4-3 loss to fall to 3-4-0 on the season in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. A pair of goals by Keito Lee and another from Trey Caldwell, on just four shots, chased starting net

minder Jacob Latrace. The hosts climbed back into the contest on second period goals by South Delta Minor Hockey products Mark Trotman and Jordan Bogress, before the Panthers scored just 29 seconds later to make it 4-2 after 40 minutes. Trotman’s second of the night and fifth of the season, with 8:25 remaining, put the Ice Hawks

back within a goal but they would get not closer. Copper Anderson turned aside 18 of 19 shots in relief. Two days earlier, Delta also spotted the first place Grandview Steelers a 3-0 first period cushion before storming back to win 4-3 in overtime. Trotman tied the game at 3-3 with 3:56 remaining in regulation

and Cam Cuthbert notched the winner during the first four-onfour extra session. Rookies Henry Rhyu and Kyle Ahfield had the other goals. Anderson, 17, made 33 saves for his first win in the PJHL. The Ice Hawks visit the Ridge Meadows Flames on Friday and return home Tuesday (7:35 p.m.) to take on Mission.

Sports Green and Gold Day

Islanders trio go in NLL draft A trio of players who helped the Delta Islanders to their historic season were selected in Monday’s National Lacrosse League Draft. Kevin Orleman was the first goaltender picked in the proceedings — taken 18th overall by the Buffalo Bandits. The Islanders acquired the Ontario native back in July from the KitchenerWaterloo Braves. He was outstanding in leading the franchise to its first-ever Minto Cup berth and the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship. The University of Guelph student posted a 7.85 goals against average and a .846 save percentage in the playoffs. Meanwhile, another Islander trade deadline acquisition was selected by the hometown Vancouver Stealth. Defender Adam Jay was taken 32nd overall and also had a superb playoff for Delta after spending the bulk of his junior career with the Victoria Shamrocks. Jay proved to be a scoring threat in transition as well, producing a pair of goals and an assist in the Islanders’ thrilling 11-10 overtime victory in the deciding game of the BCJALL championship series. Also selected Monday was third-year Islander Spencer Bromley — going in the fifth round (48th overall) to the defending NLL champion Saskatchewan Rush. He posted a career best 23 goals and 61 points during the regular season and was one of Delta’s best players in the Minto Cup with four goals in three games. Graduating junior players who still have NCAA or NJCAA eligibility remaining with their respective college or university teams are not eligible for the NLL Draft.

South Delta Rams’ hardworking executive and parent volunteers did an outstanding job to create a terrific atmosphere for the minor football club’s annual Green and Gold Day last Sunday at Dennison Park. An action-packed schedule showcased all South Delta teams, complete with elaborate player introductions (above) and plenty of food and drinks.
