It’s going to be the perfect community to live, work and play. That’s how the Tsawwassen First Nation was described Tuesday during a special event announcing the opening of the second phase of the Deltaport
Logistics Centre. Now available for leasing, the 200-acre parcel, once built-out, will have four million square feet of light manufacturing, warehousing and distribution space, a tremendous opportunity for companies looking for logistics sites ideally located close to major road and rail networks as well as Deltaport, according to
the First nation. Tuesday’s announcement was made in the first phase of the logistics centre. FIRST: see Page 3 PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI

Century project manager says Earthwise Society can be accommodated SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
There is a solution. That’s how Brad Semke, the project manager for the Southlands development, summed up the ongoing situation with the Earthwise Society during a presentation to the South Delta Probus Club Wednesday. The presentation at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn was an opportunity for club members to get an update on the Century Group’s major residential development project, which received final approval a few months ago and is now seeing preparation work take place at the 525acre site. One of the subjects he discussed was concern raised by the Earthwise Society about the loss of space. Century is transferring 80 per cent of the Southlands to Delta, land that will be used for agriculture, natural habitat and public open space, including a Market Square and greenways. The remaining 20 per cent will be for 950 housing units. The Market Square is to be located where Earthwise currently operates at Boundary Bay Road and 3rd Avenue. The society has a demonstration

Southlands project manager Brad Semke addresses the South Delta Probus Club. garden, allotment gardens, a demonstration farm as well as a nearby organic farm that raises revenue to fund education programs. In a recent interview, Earthwise executive director Patricia Fleming said the biggest impact, one the society wasn’t anticipating, will be the loss of the demonstration farm. Earthwise was aware some of the demonstration section would be impacted, but losing almost everything, including the growing area, will hugely impact programs as well as revenues, she said. Noting that agriculture will be an essential com-
ponent of the Southlands, including 50 acres for small-case community organic farming, which will be located next to larger scale production, Semke said Earthwise has been offered a couple of acres within the community farm area. Others who will have a presence there include the Delta School district’s Project Pickle. The Earthwise Garden has always been included at the core and won’t be affected, but it will still have a presence in the new active farming area too, something that was presented to the public back in 2013, explained Semke.
He noted the Market Square has been specifically designed to function for multiple events and not a single purpose. “To put everything in context, Earthwise approached us back in 2014 asking for an overlay as to what the future area would look like… we overlaid the plan as it was presented to the public and approved by (Delta) council. The Earthwise Garden where they have their lease is protected 100 per cent. The balance are all the improvements to be done for the Market Square,” he said. Anita den Dikken with a
group calling itself Friends of Earthwise told Semke that although Earthwise had signed a 20-year lease at only $1 annually for the garden, the society had spent upwards of $60,000 to restore a barn on the site. She also noted achieving organic status requires at least three years if they moved elsewhere. Semke responded that a needs list put together by Earthwise a couple of years ago included a oneacre parcel for farming, but two had been offered. When the society asked to extend its operation into the farm area, Century Group agreed. “Century said, ‘We’ll give you a lease for your garden area. We understand you’ve put in a lot of effort, and improvement, and we believe in the sustainability issue.’ However, what we have said, and always said, is, ‘The other areas, the farming areas, you’re welcome to farm there until development occurs, and then you’ll have to relocate. And that’s why there’s no lease on those lands,” he said. “That being said, alternative fields have been created for Earthwise to take advantage of. There is some work associated in bringing those fields in production, but they are certified organic.”
First phase of TFN industrial park is now fully leased CONTINUED from Page 1 That 100-acre section is fully leased and now under construction, eventually seeing such highprofile tenants as Great Western Life and the Port of Vancouver set up shop. “Today we see the further development of our Deltaport Logistics Centre as a tremendous opportunity to bridge our past with a bright, prosperous future
for our people into the 21st century,” said TFN Chief Bryce Williams. The TFN is seeing success, Williams noted, because it has excellent, active partnerships, making the First Nation more than just landlords. The TFN certainly appear poised to prosper, cashing in on its historic urban treaty signed several years ago, with the indus-
trial zone but also multiple developments. The recently opened Tsawwassen Mills regional shopping mall will be joined over the coming weeks by another new mall, Tsawwassen Commons, which is about to see its first retail tenants open. Meanwhile, construction by several developers, including Aquilini Development, continues
on new townhome, condo and single-family homes that will eventually have more than 6,000 new residents. Saying they work with their development partners to secure long-term leases, Chris Hartman, CEO of the TFN Economic Development Corporation, said there won’t be much reason to cross the river as the TFN will have most
everything a fully integrated community needs, making it ideal for employers to locate there. The TFN, meanwhile, is still waiting for word from the B.C. Lottery Corporation whether it will get a casino. The First Nation, which would still have to go through its own approval process, is facing a competing bid from neighboring Delta.

150 physical activities that make us Canadian IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, ParticipACTION is creating the ParticipACTION 150 Play List — the ultimate list of all the physical activities that make us Canadian. Throughout 2017, every Canadian, in all communities, schools and workplaces from coast to coast to coast, will be challenged to complete as many physical activities on the list as possible, track their efforts online and earn rewards along the way. Last week, Delta MP and Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough was part of the nation-wide launch of the program. “Did you know that 2017 marks the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation? Our friends at ParticipACTION have come up with the150 Play List as a way to help us all celebrate,” said
FILE PHOTO
Delta MP Carla Qualtrough says the 150 Play List will help us celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. Qualtrough. “The Play List is 150 activities that really define us as Canadians. Between October and December 2016, we’re going to ask Canadians to help us choose what those 150 activities are; they might be a favourite sport or a stroll in the woods with your dog. “In January we will launch Canadian’s favourite ways of keeping active.
Throughout 2017 we’re going to ask Canadians to do as many of these activities as they possibly can. I am going to try to do all 150 and invite all Canadians to join me.” To register or find out more, including details on more than 100 local ParticipACTION Play List events throughout 2017, visit www.participACTION.com/150.

Earthwise’s barn owl pair has rare second brood
Biologist Sofi Hindmarch visited the Earthwise Garden and Farm recently to band a rare second set of baby barn owls. Hindmarch says there’s only a 10 per cent chance that a pair of these owls will have two broods in one season. The owlets are now nine weeks old and have just started learning how to fly. The next month is a critical time for them as their parents teach them how to fly and forage.
The Earthwise Farm Store barn is set-up with cameras that continually monitor the owl family’s activities. Visitors can observe the young owlets on camera in real time when visiting the Earthwise Farm Store. Barn owls are a threatened species in B.C. Hindmarch’s master’s degree and subsequent research focused on the negative impacts of land use change, loss of habitat and loss of nesting sites on barn owls in B.C.
While the Earthwise barn has provided a safe nesting space for this barn owl pair to raise two broods this year, many other barn owls in the area lack safe nesting sites and can become a target for eagles. Ample foraging space is also important for barn owls, as when natural forage sites are removed, owls have to depend on roadkill for their sustenance. Traffic is the leading cause of mortality for young barn owls in B.C.

Locals support grieving communities Artwork and letters sent from Ladner to northern Saskatchewan towns hit by youth suicides DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Locals came together this week to show their support for northern Saskatchewan communities hit by youth suicides. Open studio sessions were held at Alongside You in Ladner on Monday and Wednesday for people to create art and write letters of support to the grieving communities of La Ronge and Stanley Mission. Ladner resident Amber Cummings came up with the idea after seeing a news story on her Facebook feed and wanted to do something instead of just sharing it on Facebook, praying in the privacy of her own home and hoping for healing. The story has come up before in different communities, “but I think your heart meets a breaking point sometimes,” she said. Cummings said Meg and Andrew Neufeld from Alongside You, an integrated health agency, immediately jumped on board and were very supportive.

Amber Cummings (middle with son Samuel) came up with the idea to show support for northern Saskatchewan communities. She’s shown with Sabrina Fast (left) and Meg Neufeld at Alongside You in Ladner. It was reported that three young girls aged 12 to 14 took their own lives over the course of four days earlier this month in northern Saskatchewan
with First Nations officials calling the situation a crisis. Media reports this week noted a fourth girl, a 10-year-old, had taken her
own life. Cummings said one package of art and letters had been sent earlier this week and another was to be shipped out yesterday.
She added anyone wishing to get involved could contact kakichihiwewin@ gmail.com. Meg Neufeld said Alongside You has a group
therapy session Saturday mornings called dialectical behaviour therapy that’s geared towards people who are at high risk for suicide.

here’s a lot riding on those negotiations. When the Tsawwassen First Nation signed its historic treaty back in 2009, it included a provision to negotiate tax-sharing agreements with both the federal and provincial governments. It’s hard to say whether what has since transpired on TFN land was envisioned at the time, but it’s clear today that component of the treaty could be a significant revenue stream for the local First Nation. Some quick math shows the money at stake in negotiations between the TFN and senior governments is substantial. Tsawwassen Mills attracted somewhere north of 300,000 shoppers in its first week, and if each spent $100, that would equate to a whopping $30 million in transactions, which would produce $3.6 million in tax. Opening week obviously drew crowds that won’t be typical moving forward, but even if you cut that figure in half, or by two-thirds, that’s still a heck of a lot of tax revenue generated on a weekly basis. And given the 200-store Tsawwassen Mills has been described as a destination mall, one where shoppers come from further away, stay longer and, most importantly, spend more, the $100 figure per shopper could well be on the light side. Throw in another 100 retailers at Tsawwassen Commons, the adjacent outdoor mall that’s starting to see tenants open their doors, and you’ve got even more PST and GST being collected through tills on TFN land. What share the TFN will receive is still subject to negotiations with Canada and B.C., but even a tiny slice of all that tax revenue could be in the millions on an annual basis and make for a very prosperous future for a First Nation that’s turning into an economic power. Given the rather unique situation that now sees two mega malls on treaty settlement land, I suspect senior governments will be looking to play hardball, not wanting the TFN to take too much milk from their new-found cash cow. It remains to be seen how this will all play out, but you’ve got to give the First Nation credit for its foresight. In striking deals with a pair of development companies to build the malls, it not only became a landlord but it positioned itself to potentially get a piece of every transaction conducted in them.
Province application for the Massey bridge needs work
M
ost people in Delta South support a new crossing to relieve congestion at the George Massey Tunnel, as do I, but since public consultation began, residents have had concerns about the way the government has handled this project. Unfortunately, the government’s current application for an environmental certificate presents the latest in a series of problems. Earlier this month, my office wrote to the provincial government to highlight information gaps and unfounded assumptions about the project’s effects on traffic, agriculture, wildlife and the community. You can read my full submission to the Environmental Assessment Office at www.vickihuntington.ca/blog/masseysubmission. Many of my concerns centre around both the government’s traffic projections, and the lack of progress on a regional tolling policy review that was promised three years ago. I have repeatedly pressed the transportation minister to honour his promise to undertake that review, only to hear the same response: “There is plenty of time to talk about regional tolling.” I disagree. And Metro Vancouver mayors disagree. A Massey bridge toll could cost South Delta commuters more than $1,000 annually. It will affect
MLA’s Report VICKI HUNTINGTON
not only how much traffic there is at the new bridge, but how much of it diverts to the heavilycongested Alex Fraser. This is especially concerning because many businesses on Annacis Island are already affected by traffic congestion, and some are considering packing up shop in search of greener pastures. With the proposed Massey bridge in place, the government’s own application says we can expect an extra 33,000 vehicles a day at the Alex Fraser by 2045. So the situation is set to get much worse. A regional tolling plan, with reduced tolls on all bridges, would change almost every component of the government’s application for the Massey bridge, including its projections for traffic, noise, greenhouse gas pollution, effects on agricultural land
and impacts on local wildlife. The government argues that it looked at the effects of an un-tolled Massey bridge as a “worst case scenario” to be cautious. But that misses the point. The government’s application shows traffic estimates for the tolled bridge are about 40,000 vehicles a day lower than one with no toll. That’s more than half of the tunnel’s existing daily traffic, so it is vital that we have clarity on what the tolling framework will actually be. Changing the flow of tens of thousands of vehicles a day will have critical consequences for our community and surrounding areas. The central justification for the new bridge has always been to reduce congestion. But in the government’s entire 4,400-page application, it never makes a credible case that the bridge will relieve congestion, in large part because it has neither a regional tolling plan, nor estimates for how such a plan would actually impact traffic flow on the Massey bridge and other Metro Vancouver crossings. What we’re seeing is a piecemeal approach to a regional problem. I find that unacceptable, especially when we’re talking about billion-dollar decisions. We need to know that a $3.5-billion bridge is going to do what the government says it will, not just shift the problem somewhere else.

Renters hindered by gov’t policies
Editor: I’m a non-political member of the public and want to voice my opinion, and that of many people I have talked to and asked if I’m correct. Yes, they said, you are absolutely correct. The issue is about immigration policies, Metro Vancouver infrastructure and housing affordability. The politicians, or a certain group of them, announce once in a while that for sustainability we need so many immigrants coming in. Is that really so? How sustainable are we here with the number of cars per kilometre of roads, or number of patients per hospital bed, or number of non-immigrant Canadians looking for affordable
housing? I can clearly answer the last one. A dozen years ago it was difficult to find preferable tenants for my rental condo. What a different story today. One hour after a Craigslist posting the avalanche of text messages and emails started coming in. I have had difficulties organizing interviews and trying to keep people’s hopes at bay. I have stopped interviews after seeing three couples and talking to two others on the phone. It was difficult to look in people’s eyes, full of fragile hope and tiny expectations. It was heartbreaking to write this email reply: I’m very sorry to inform you
the condo has been rented out to another couple of equal preference because they just happened to contact me first. The three interviewed couples were Canadian born in their 20s and 30s and it was hard not to think those young people have been screwed up by our government, which in very short time has allowed too much capital in, making real estate unnaturally expensive for ordinary Canadians. How many immigrants came to Metro Vancouver in the last 10 years? How much money did they pay to gain immigration rights? What amount of that money and in what way did it contribute to sustainability? How much
tax did those immigrants pay? What are the sources of their fortunes? I have met hundreds of ordinary, hard-working immigrants — factory workers, professionals and intellectuals. They all came to Canada with nothing or very little. Now, if some of the fortunes that bought their entry to Canada were obtained by dishonest, manipulative or criminal activity, and our government pretended to know nothing about it, does it make those decision makers guilty of partnership in crime? Or just being politically incorrect? And this is my nonpolitical but very correct question. Edward Jaworski

Don’t let your unwanted gun get destroyed
Editor: Re: Amnesty offers chance to surrender firearms, Oct. 14 The Delta Police Department’s gun amnesty offer is nothing new, nor should it be a cause for concern amongst firearms owners. Silvercore Training, headquartered in Delta and Canada’s largest firearms training company, has been offering the same service throughout the Lower Mainland since 2004. We want the public to know there is no time constraint to legally turn over firearms and ammunition to Silvercore.
Over the years, Silvercore has received hundreds of unwanted firearms, magazines and accessories from multiple local law enforcement agencies, which in turn are deactivated and made into inert training aids for use in our courses. Unfortunately, changes in Canada’s public agency regulations now require law enforcement agencies to immediately destroy the firearms they receive. Instead of allowing this to happen, you can donate any firearm, magazine, accessory or ammunition in your possession to Silvercore.
Silvercore will take care of all legal transfers, paperwork and transportation of firearms. Rather than destroying any guns collected, we deactivate them so they cannot be fired and put them to use educating a growing and vibrant community of new firearm owners. In this way, we are able to build on Delta’s rich history of hunting and firearms ownership. Do not attempt to transfer the firearms or ammunition on your own. You can call Silvercore at 604-940-7785 and a federally licensed business representative will take care of
Acknowledge Earthwise Society’s efforts
Editor: Earthwise Society remains grateful for the opportunity that Century Group gave us to create the Earthwise Garden and Demonstration Farm on the Southlands. Century not only provided us with raw land on which to build the garden, but also invited us to establish a small-scale demonstration farm that subsequently became “the working model for the
Southlands Communitybased Farm,” according to the Imagine Southlands website. Over the past 10 years, Earthwise Society has transformed three acres of unused dirt to a thriving and beautiful organic farm and garden. Earthwise has invested over $100,000 to build this community resource. In addition, our lease with Century required us to make major structural repairs to one of
the barns on the property at a cost of $60,000. These costs are all in addition to the $1 per year lease. We believe that Century has benefited from this agreement as much, if not more, than Earthwise and that the society’s substantial financial contribution to, and investment in improvements to the Southlands site, should be acknowledged. Another name to go on cenotaph
Katie
Domestic Long Hair, Brown Tabby with White, Spayed Female Senior, (Approximately 10 years old) This sweet, shy girl was surrendered to the shelter and is looking for a calm, consistent household where she can settle in without too much change or excitement. Katie lived with another cat (her sibling) and is used to being an indoor/outdoor cat. Katie was previously having some accidents outside of her litter box and it was determined that she had a urinary tract infection. We have switched her to a urinary diet and she hasn’t had any accidents here at the shelter. We feel that a low stress home with no other animals would be ideal for her. Katie is a shy wall flower but if given time and attention she really blooms. She loves to rub against your hand and receive chin rubs. We believe that once in a home, her true sweet personality will shine through. Katie loves to curl up on a lap and appreciates being brushed. She’ll even kneed and drool after a few minutes of attention! Do you have the retirement home Katie needs?

Editor: Re: Historic Memorial Park pays tribute to our fallen soldiers, Community Comment, Oct. 14 I’d like to thank Doug Husband for his excellent column and, yes, Doug, I agree the sound system issue needs sorting out. Thanks also to Peter Broznitsky for keeping alive a “life story” for those names etched in granite. Though often referred to as a war memorial, its proper designation is a cenotaph, which is “an empty tomb or a monument erected in honour of persons who remains are interned elsewhere.” The industrialization of killing in the First World War produced military deaths in the hundreds of thousands. In 1917, the now named Commonwealth War Graves Commission was created (in and of itself a fascinating story) and a decision was made that the remains of those who died in battle would not be repatriated to Canada but interned or remembered where they fell. For Canadians killed in action, this would only change in recent years. Thousands of grieving Canadians asked the question at war’s end: “Where are we to go to remember and grieve our dead sons and daughters?” The answer was a flurry of memorial/cenotaph building across Canada and which, as Husband explained, happened in
Delta as well. Imagine the palatable sense of grief, loss, anger and hopeless on Nov. 11, 1919? Residents of Delta gathered to grieve and remember those who would never come home and whose lives were cut short. Though Remembrance Day has over the years become many things – a thanks to all veterans, a community parade of service organizations and the young, a religious service, a civic event — it remains at its core a funeral/memorial service. During the last post, the silence, the lament, the rouse if you fix your eyes on those names; it is as if they cry out, “Remember me: once I lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, loved and was loved,” and now I lie forever in a foreign field. As each Nov. 11 turns ceaselessly towards me, I feel both dread and anticipation. It brings me close to the pain in my heart that is still deep and searing — all those mostly young people whose names and voices I remember so well. The criteria, according to the federal government, to have one’s name inscribed upon a cenotaph or memorial in Canada is that you were killed in war and are listed in the official Books of Remembrance in the Peace Tower in Ottawa. It would be good to know if since the Second World War there have been any

persons listed in those books who fell in battle and resided in Delta I know of only one. His name is Sapper (Engineer Private) Stephen John Stock, who on Aug. 21, 2008 died with his comrades Sgt. Shawn Eades and Cpl. Dustin Wasden. Their armoured vehicle on patrol on a dangerous stretch of highway struck an improvised explosive device in the Zhari region of Kandahar province Afghanistan. Stock graduated from SDSS (2001) as his family lived for a time in Tsawwassen. SDSS has recently honoured him with a plaque. I was the senior chaplain for Task Force 1-08 Operation Athena and Stock was one of my soldiers. I remember that day well. The phone call that sent me immediately to the Role 3 Trauma Hospital with no information always meant mass casualty and death. As evening fell, amidst the constant noise of base life, the smell of diesel, the stench of raw sewage and burning garbage, and the ever-present dust, a convoy roared into the Canadian section of the Kandahar Airfield. It brought their remains along with their grief stricken friends. Under the glare of night lights, the body bags were unloaded. Capt. Darren Persuad, the Battle Group chaplain, had been on the
convoy and accompanied the remains. Exhausted, we hugged and made quick plans for what was coming next. As he went to minster to the friends of the three dead soldiers, I and the bearer party escorted the remains of our dead soldiers to the Mortuary Affairs facility, a grim, grey, Gotham-like building. We thought of the three families who as the sun rose in Canada were hearing the dreaded knock on the door and the visit from a senior officer and a padre bearing the news every military family fears hearing. The next day, after a solemn ramp ceremony, three sets of remains began the journey home. We, leaving the ramp as the plane took off, went back to war, to fighting and to death. Perhaps someday those who make such decisions may decide Stock’s name deserves to be etched into that solemn grey granite cenotaph. There may be other names that should be there as well. When you stand around Delta’s cenotaph this Nov. 11, remember another of Delta’s sons, Stephen John Stock. He, for a brief time, both loved and was loved and having had his life cut short by war joins the heavenly host of Canada’s war dead. Major the Rev. Port misleading feds on need to industrialize
Editor: It is alarming the new Liberal government of Canada is being completely misled by the Port of Vancouver. It is difficult to believe the statements by the federal Minister of Agriculture Lawrence MacAulay in reference to B.C. agricultural land protected by the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve: “Lower Mainland farmland could be sacrificed to ensure agri-food exports can move to market quickly and efficiently, federal agriculture minister Lawrence MacAulay told Country Life in B.C.” Canada wants to increase export-ready agri-food exports to China and other Asian countries. It is ironic the Port of Vancouver claims it needs to industrialize Canada’s best farmland in order to export agricultural products. There is no evidence
to support the claim that we need to industrialize farmland. This is a ploy by the Port of Vancouver to expand its real estate holdings which will enrich the Crown corporation and associates. It has nothing to do with sensible port business. Exporting agricultural products has been, and continues to be, important to the Canadian economy. It can continue without using the precious five per cent B.C. farmland. The largest increase in agricultural exports is wheat and other grains, which are being accommodated by a new massive grain terminal in North Vancouver. In terms of processed foods, which were stressed in the article, Vancouver exported 20 per cent more tonnage in 2010 than in 2015. Fraser Surrey Docks is a wonderful terminal with a
large stretch of industrial land that is ideal for the export of specialty crops and processed foods. The current plans for funneling dirty U.S. thermal coal through this great site are uneconomical and a waste of our precious port lands. The prime minister and federal ministers of agriculture, transport, natural resources, environment, fisheries and trade don’t seem to be aware they are being duped by the Port of Vancouver. Isn’t it time to stop listening to paid lobbyists and old guard civil servants and advisors? Isn’t it time to listen to public concerns about protecting the ecosystems of the Fraser River delta which interactively support the world’s best salmon river, Canada’s rich farmland, and Canada’s Most Important Bird Area for shorebirds, waterfowl and birds of prey? Soldier feels attachment to Ladner Editor: Re: Historic Memorial Park pays tribute to our fallen soldiers, Community Comment, Oct. 14 I just wanted to thank Doug Husband for his column on the cenotaph in Memorial Park. I have many memories of standing at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day with the Beavers, Cubs and, eventually, the Scouts. I moved to Ladner as a boy in 1976 and grew up there. Recently attending the 30-year reunion of the class of 1986 was a great trip down memory lane. I left Ladner in late 1986 to serve in the armed
forces. After 27 years and counting, I will likely be retiring medically as my lungs were permanently damaged in Afghanistan. I stand each year on Nov. 11 and pay my respects to those who
did not make it home from that place. I have stood on the runway in Kandahar and watched the flag-draped coffins go on to the aircraft and carried the coffins of friends who lost their battles with PTSD after we came home. I hope one day to come back to Ladner and do so at the cenotaph so prevalent in my childhood memories to do the same in a place that always meant home, safety and peace to me. Cpl. The Delta-Richmond Council of Canadians is hosting an alternative open house on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project next week in Ladner. The open house and panel discussion will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27 at the Ladner Community Centre at 7 p.m. Panelists Harold Steves (Richmond councillor and “father of the ALR”), Susan Jones (respected environmental advocate) and Andrew Martin (UBC School of Community and Social Planning) will examine the forces behind the project and the alter-
Susan Jones natives to the $3.5-billion span. The panel presentations will be followed by an open community discussion on alternatives and actions. Organizers say we work together to put an end to the 1980’s kind of think-
ing that views more cars, bigger highways and sprawling development as progress. They say experience in every metropolis, from Los Angeles to Shanghai, proves this only creates more congestion and air pollution. The Council of Canadians maintains that in the 21st century, as urban populations grow and the impacts of climate change challenge us, we have to find better ways to move people and products into, out of and across the region south of the Fraser River and throughout the Lower Mainland.

Halloween fun to be had Family Fright Fest and Murder Mystery Night among Delta’s offerings DAVE WILLIS

t’s not quite Halloween yet but a spooky-good time can be had at the annual free Family Fright Fest in Ladner next Wednesday. The event is “definitely fun for all ages so we want to encourage everybody to come out,” says Corporation of Delta recreation program coordinator Kelly Wilson. It takes place at the Ladner Community Centre, McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre, McKee heritage home and surrounding area. There will be activities for kids, who are encouraged to dress up in their costumes, hay rides and a haunted house. Trick or treating takes place at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre. The McKee seniors are big supporters of the event, Wilson notes, adding there will also be a meal deal at the Kee Café. The Boys and Girls Club will play host to mad scientist games and activities for older kids while Studio West Dance students will perform at the event as well, she says. The McKee heritage home will once again be transformed into a haunted house for Family Fright Fest. Wilson notes one change will see community members working on the haunted house instead of South Delta Secondary students, who were unable to take part this year.

Trick or treating at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre (above) and hay rides (below) will once again be part of the Family Fright Fest in Ladner. This year’s event takes place next Wednesday. Family Fright Fest takes place Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4 to 8 p.m. “It’s going to be great,”
says Wilson. The usual 47th Avenue road closure will be in effect from 3 to 8 p.m. The
back parking lot of the Ladner Community Centre will be closed as well. • Halloween isn’t just for kids. A Halloween Murder Mystery Night for those 19 and up is planned for next Saturday at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Participants buy a ticket, receive an invitation with a character to play and try to solve the mystery, explains Delta recreation programmer Jacqueline Hamlin. The mystery, titled Murder at the Juice Joint,
has a 1920s theme to it, she says. The Sidekick Players Club is co-hosting the event, Hamlin notes, adding some of the theatre group’s actors will be involved as well. The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. Participants are encouraged to come in period costume. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased online at DeltaReg.ca.
Can you escape the bog on All Hallows’ Eve?
Burns Bog Escape takes the thrill of escape rooms and the chill of Halloween into the wilds of the Delta Nature Reserve. The mission involves being trapped in an alternate reality where you and your friends or family sneak into Burns Bog on All Hallows’ Eve. Tethered to the land are eight souls of Second World War soldiers, killed by bombs made from the very peat you are standing on. You must free their souls or
risk being trapped with them forever. Burns Bog Escape is family-friendly event, but there are some spooky elements throughout so children need to be accompanied by an adult. The activity is interactive and tests your group’s problem-solving skills. The fastest group of four to successfully “escape the bog” wins tickets and membership to Time Escape Games, courtesy of Time Escape Games in
Richmond. Unlike traditional escape rooms where you’re locked in a room with a set time limit to solve the clues, Burns Bog Escape is held in an open space with no time restrictions so you cannot lose unless you give up. It starts on Friday, Oct. 28 and runs through to Monday, Oct. 31. Time slots can be booked at www.bogescape.ca. All proceeds go to the Burns Bog Conservation Society.

aton Arrowsmith School (EA) offers individualized programs for children with learning disabilities. Instead of helping students cope with their weaknesses, it uses a series of cognitive exercises to strengthen the areas of their brains that cause their learning disabilities. Developed by educator Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, the Arrowsmith Program has helped children with learning difficulties since 1978. Fisher Brown is one of those students. His struggles with focus and basic arithmetic started to lead to behavioural problems in elementary school. “Fisher was misdiagnosed in the early grades as having attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),” his father, Grant, recalls. “He was having difficulty with basic math concepts despite additional tutoring. Every parent/teacher meeting ended in tears.” Once enrolled at EA, Fisher focused on the tasks that were difficult for him through an individualized program of brain strengthening exercises. “His hard work paid off and subtle changes in both focus and behaviour were quickly apparent,” Grant says. At EA, Fisher discovered a caring environment free from the stigma and negative feedback he experienced in grade school. “The school offers a sense of camaraderie,” Grant says. “Everyone wanted to help and support Fisher.”
Apart from the obvious benefits for Fisher, Grant and his family noticed improvements in their home life too. “The arguments, frustrations, guilt and worry all disappeared,” Grant says. “The peace in the house was profound for us. Family members who hadn’t seen Fisher in a while were astounded at the change. He’s still the same great kid, but he has a deeper intellectual capacity.” Fisher is now back in regular high school and getting straight A’s, even in math. “For parents considering EA, don’t worry about the lack of academic programming,” Grant advises. “That was a concern for us. But Fisher now learns much faster. He quickly got back up to grade level in regular high school.” For more information about Eaton Arrowsmith School or the Arrowsmith Program, call 604.538.1710, email info@ eatonarrowsmith.com, visit the website at eatonarrowsmith.com, or take an interactive tour of one of our schools. Here are five ways to help burn belly fat Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
I did a Facebook Live chat last week about the top 10 tips to lose menopausal belly fat, and as I was reading them off, I realized that five of these principles can be applied to men and women alike at any age. These are universal truths when it comes to burning belly fat: 1. Control your stress. Stress increases cortisol production and cortisol, in turn, will pack the pounds around the mid-section. Now, it’s not doing that to be a jerk, it’s actually doing that because it thinks it’s protecting the internal organs from what must be a perceived threat. However, there are no real threats, are there? We are just stressing because that’s what we do. Long-term stress will also cause our cortisol and insulin levels to remain high in the blood and when this happens the extra glucose in our body will get stored as fat — and for women, mostly in the abdomen and thighs. So, if you really want to lose the belly fat you need to learn to control your stress, be it through meditation, yoga or any mindfulness based activity.
My favourite stressbusting app is Headspace. You can also calm yourself down with deep belly breathing. Deep breathing will stimulate the vagus nerve, which then calms down your overactive central nervous system. Try this easy breathing exercise: lie on your back with a book resting on your belly. Inhale deeply and feel the book rise under your belly and then exhale fully and feel the book lower towards the spine. Repeat for five to 10 minutes daily to improve your vagus nerve function. 2. Strength train. Perform a properly designed strength workout at least three times a week. This will build your lean muscle tissue, which starts to decrease after the age of 30, and in turn ramp up your metabolism and your ability to burn fat 24 hours a day. 3. Eat regular meals everyday. Nothing will damage your metabolism, and pack the weight on around the mid-section, than starving yourself and going on yo-yo diet after yo-yo diet. We need a stable level of blood sugars to prevent cortisol from being released (remembering that cortisol loves to pack the pounds on around the middle), and eating regularly does just that. Yes, you need to eat less to lose weight, but deprivation is not the key. 4. Eat more protein. Aim for a gram of protein, per pound of body weight. This will help support the lean muscle tissue you are building in
the gym, leave you feeling fuller for a longer period of time, and it will save calories because you are feeling satisfied sooner and are less likely to go back for seconds. Most people that I coach do not get nearly enough protein. If you are not sure how many grams of protein you are eating each day, I recommend that you download one of the many free food journaling apps out there (I love loseit.com), and keep track of your diet for a few days. Understand that ignorance is not bliss when it comes to weight loss. You need to track and monitor so you can fully understand where you need to step up your game. 5. Eat at the right time of day. Cortisol has a natural rhythm that is highest in the morning, and then decreases gradually as the day progresses. Eating tends to increase cortisol, so eating the largest meal earlier in the day is the best option for weight loss and maintenance. In addition, our body’s ability to process carbohydrates decreases as the day goes on. We metabolize carbohydrates more efficiently in the morning, compared to later in the evening. And, the more efficiently our body can use the food we eat, the easier it is to lose belly fat. PJ Wren is a local writer and trainer who can be reached at www.fitnesswithpj.com. Lucy will be at the George Mackie Library on Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Tsawwassen Library on Wednesday, Oct. 26, and the Ladner Pioneer Library on Thursday, Oct. 27. All sessions run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. As a writer, producer and connector, Lucy is a natural communicator. DSS grad receives grant to produce digital short Krista Kelloway gets $10,000 from STORYHIVE IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A Delta Secondary grad is part of a film making team benefiting from TELUS’ communitypowered funding program STORYHIVE. Krista Kelloway, who spent most of her youth in Ladner, is project lead of The Apprenticeship of Raffael Cocco, one of 30 short films chosen in B.C. and Alberta that received a $10,000 grant to bring their projects to life. Kelloway, who has more than 30 film and television projects to her credit, got the bug for film making and telling stories while completing the theatre program at DSS. “Through the theatre career prep program it helped me gain a job placement on a lowbudget film,” she recalled. “That’s where the film making bug really started for me.” Since its inception in 2014, STORYHIVE has helped foster the development of content creators in Western Canada by providing almost $2 million worth of grants. This edition called on female directors in B.C. and Alberta to push the limits and pitch out-of-the-box, genre bending ideas. Fans will now vote and select one winning digital short project from each province. One winner, to be announced in February, will receive a $50,000 grant to produce their full digital short, as well as customized career training and mentor-

ship, and a scholarship to the Banff World Media Festival. See more at: http://www.storyhive. com. Friend Erin Cumming, a talented B.C. television editor, initiated the idea for the project, said Kelloway. “Erin said in passing to me one day that she was interested in applying for this TELUS STORYHIVE project. I said that’s amazing and how can I support you in this goal,” Kelloway recalled. “Erin had an initial idea and had made some contact with our documentary subjects and there was an interest there, and away we went.” The Apprenticeship of Raffael Cocco follows a successful master tailor as he gains a new apprentice. The only catch — it’s his son. Together they run Seville Tailors, a successful tailoring business located
in Burnaby since 1985. “We get to see the two of them interacting, what the son is learning — they have a fun dynamic,” said Kelloway. “I’m excited about it and really happy to support Erin do something different and step into a director role. The main goal really was just to get the seed funds to be able to facilitate making this project and creating these new mentoring opportunities. While the end result would be pretty cool, I’ve accomplished the goal that I set out to, which was helping promote females in key roles in the industry.” Kelloway added that there were 218 submissions between the two provinces. “Women were just waiting to be asked and look at the results. To be one of the 15 from B.C. is great — we get to make a movie.”

I was the first client to use the sauna and I was truly a non believer I was yah whatever I have been in saunas before they do nothing more than sweat you... this was different the infrared heat really gets down into the muscle tissue and just loosens those knotted muscle good.” ~M.C., Ladner “As soon as my Psoriasis begins to appear I go to Hawaiian Beach” ~ R.H., Ladner “Hawaiian Beach sunbeds help ease my Psoriasis” ~W.G., Ladner

Rotary efforts helping end polio
There were 350,000 cases of polio around the world when Rotary started the campaign to eradicate the disease in 1985. Now, 31 years later, after the investment of billions of dollars and countless volunteer and professional time, as of late last month there are only 26 cases remaining in three countries: Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. The challenge is to not only eradicate the disease, but to keep monitoring
and vaccinating children to ensure it does not return. For that reason, the Rotary Club of Ladner, along with the 34,000 other clubs across the world, as well as health, government and philanthropic organizations, is marking progress toward a polio-free world on Rotary World Polio Day, Oct. 24. World Polio Day is intended to raise awareness that a vaccinepreventable disease still

threatens children in parts of the world. To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, experts say $1.5 billion is urgently needed. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries.

The South Delta Sun Devils are hoping to make one more splash as a remarkable era for senior girls volleyball winds down at the Tsawwassen school. Seniors Ashley Klassen and Kennedy Bonner were aged up when South Delta rolled to its third consecutive B.C. title in 2014, behind the brilliance of current UCLA sophomores Megan and Nicole McNamara. Klassen will follow a similar path as the twins and take her beach volleyball career to Florida International next fall. Bonner is also a prime university prospect, while another Grade 12 standout — power hitter Jayde Robertsen — recently committed to Eastern Washington University. With the senior trio leading the charge, the Sun Devils are currently No. 8 in the provincial AAAA rankings and hopefully the best is still to come according to coach Dan Burgess. South Delta has shown glimpses of its potential but have yet to fire on all cylinders for various reasons. “We haven’t had a single tournament yet where all the girls have been there,” said Burgess, following his team’s straight set win over the Delta Pacers on Wednesday night. “Ashley had a commitment for one and now Kennedy has a hand injury that we’re hoping will only keep her out three to four weeks.
Three-year starter Ashley Klassen is taking her beach volleyball game to Florida International next September.
PHOTOS BY MARK BOOTH
Jayde Robertsen dominated at the net in the South Delta Sun Devils straight set win over Delta Pacers Wednesday night. The senior standout is taking her career to Eastern Washington University. “It’s been an interesting season so far. We feel like we are on the cusp of taking the next step for a long time but just haven’t been able to break through. The potential is there to be top five (in the province). When we are mediocre we are a solid top 12.” It means the Sun Devils are on a similar path that produced an eighth place finish at the provincials a year ago. However, Burgess says this is a deeper and more experienced team, unlike last season when one key injury could have dimmed all hopes. He also has a terrific group of Grade 10s coming up that should mean South Delta will continue to be a serious contender for provincial berths for at least the next couple of years.
For now, the focus is ensuring the current team realizes its full potential and negotiates its way through what could be a tricky draw at next month’s Fraser Valley AAAA Championships that will determine up to six provincial berths. “All the coaches in the valley are quite worried because the parity is enormous,” continued Burgess. “Right now, I would say Earl Marriott and Tweedsmuir are a step above everyone else. Then there is Seaquam, us, Semiahmoo, Mission and Terry Fox. There are probably seven very good teams in the valley and, at the most, six will be going.” South Delta is eligible for the AAAA tier — based on enrolment — by just seven students. The
number of international students attending SDSS each school year typically determines the Sun Devils’ placement. They would be a serious championship contender at the AAA level this season but Burgess is happy to be in the larger school tier. “With three of our girls moving onto college (ball), this is where we want to be,” he added. “I would rather finish 10th in AAAA than be a top three in AAA.” The Sun Devils will play their final home league match of the season next Wednesday against White Rock Christian (8 p.m.). A week later, they will conclude their Fraser Valley West schedule at Seaquam against the No. 7 Seahawks.

Devils get back to work against Irish
The South Delta Sun Devils are hoping to be closer to full strength for their pivotal Western Conference game Saturday against the Vancouver College Fighting Irish at O’Hagan Field. Senior standout Grant McDonald is considered “probable” for Saturday’s game after being sidelined for the past month with an ankle sprain. The threeyear starter, who has been recruited by American and Canadian schools, would provide a big boost on both sides of the ball.
The Sun Devils interior line is also expected to be strengthened with the return of Grade 12s Peter Chountalos and Ben Mitchell, while Grade 11 receiver/ defensive back Max Stalling is also expected to play. South Delta (2-1) is coming off a bye week after dropping its first game of the season to Notre Dame back on Oct. 8. The Fighting Irish stand at 2-2 following a 13-10 setback to the New West Hyacks. The Devils also face Mt. Doug and New West to close out the regular season.

Though, you are missed and we wished you did not have to go. Now you are at peace and in a better place. I miss listening to you play your accordion at Mckee Seniors Centre with the Jammers. Are you keeping everyone dancing or tapping their toes up there? Are you helping St. Peter with the keys? You always said, it would be your job when you got up there.
Your loving wife Audrey, your children and my children
Jim graduated from UBC in mechanical engineering and had an international career in the pulp and paper industry. He was a lifetime member of the Fraser Squadron, serving as Training Officer and Commander. Jim enjoyed curling and sailing. He was an avid reader and was always up for an adventure, including river rafting at the age of 90!

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
