Crime index at the low end Delta’s score for 2015 well below regional, provincial and national averages SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta continues to enjoy a lower crime rate compared to the region, the province and the country. Police Chief Neil Dubord offered that reassuring conclusion following a presentation to Delta council Monday outlining the 2015 Crime Severity Index (CSI). It’s a report compiled by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics that looked at 308 municipalities across Canada. For the last seven years, Statistics Canada has published the CSI to account for the severity of crime,
along with the number of offences in a jurisdiction. Dubord explained that auto theft, for example, is scored far lower than homicide in order to account for differences in criminal activity. “The Crime Severity Index is a unique report that’s produced once a year from Statistics Canada which rates crimes on the impact to communities,” Dubord explained. “So what that means is a homicide would have the very highest rating and gather the most points while minor crimes would be given a lesser amount of points, and they then add up the number of

Asked how he thinks Delta’s 2016 score will fare, considering the number of gang-related shootings in Surrey that spilled into North Delta, as well as a shooting in North Delta earlier this week, Dubord replied, “Certainly this year we will be even better than we were last year… during the first nine months we’re ahead of the game, both violent crime and property crime.” Dubord’s report also noted differences in crime rates occur due to social demographics, large crime attractors such as shopping malls and industrial parks, as well as the prevalence of public transit.

Edward (Fast Eddy) Dostaler passed through South Delta Wednesday on his journey across Canada and back again. The 28-year-old left Victoria on March 1, 2015 for his run to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s and breast cancer and plans to finish the trek in B.C.’s capital tomorrow afternoon. “I’m still grateful that I take it one day at a time,” he said with a laugh. The unsupported run
has taken over 600 days, but Dostaler, who’s gone through 30 pairs of shoes, said he’s still feeling alright. “Physically I feel not too bad, obviously you’re sore in some stages, areas, those kinds of things,” he said, noting the hardest part of the run was definitely on the mental side. “You take it one day at a time and you try and do your best. It’s your best, don’t worry about the actions of other people. As long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and say, ‘I gave it my best,’
that’s all you can do.” Dostaler’s journey has included giving talks to students along the way and he had two scheduled stops at Tsawwassen elementary schools Wednesday. A lot of planning, including plotting routes, has gone into the run, which will total over 27,000 kilometres, he said. He said he’s got a grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease and that a late professor of his was an advocate for breast cancer. Dostaler, who had been studying Canadian his-
tory and political science and was doing carpentry work before he left on his run, said he’s not too sure what he’ll do after he’s finished. He plans on doing a 24-hour run to cap off the journey. He said the end will probably have an anticlimactic feeling to it. Visit his website at www. fasteddycanada.com for donation details. PHOTO BY DAVE WILLIS

Month-long job fair is launched this week SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
In an effort to attract more employees, Tsawwassen Mills is trying something new. The mall held a couple of one-day job fairs in the weeks and months leading up to the grand opening earlier this month, in addition to some retailers holding their own events, but yesterday it launched what will be a long-running job fair on-site. Similar to a traditional job fair, the new centre will host a variety of retailers looking to hire employees for part-time, full-time or holiday work. The centre will be open daily, hosting different retailers each day until late November. The 1.2-million-square-
foot destination mall on Tsawwassen First Nation land at the corner of Highway 17 and 52nd Street opened Oct. 5. At maximum occupancy, it will have 200 stores. According to the mall, with so many retailers already operating in the centre, and other stores and restaurants about to open, including Milestone’s, Montana’s BBQ and Bar, and Bath and Body Works, there’s a need to help recruit employees. “The new job centre is perfect for anyone looking for full-time, part-time or holiday work in retail,” said general manager Mark Fenwick. “We’ll have a variety of retailers set up and ready to interview on the spot. Job-seekers can review
the positions on our website, and come down to Tsawwassen Mills to meet directly with stores looking to hire.” The job centre is located in a retail space between Entry 2 and 3, near Saks OFF 5TH. Visit www. TsawwassenMills.com for more information. In another effort to entice employees, particularly those who don’t drive and see transit service out here as a deterrent, the mall, shortly before it opened, announced it would operate a daily employee shuttle from the Scott Road SkyTrain Station. Fees for the shuttle had been waived for a while but will soon kick in at $2 each way or $40 for a monthly pass.

Fish was in massive aquarium at Bass Pro in Tsawwassen Mills SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The death of a white sturgeon in the big fish tank at the new Bass Pro Shops in Tsawwassen has prompted an SPCA investigation. A controversial addition to the 15,000-gallon freshwater aquarium at the Tsawwassen Mills store, the five-foot fish died last week. The store issued a statement that while the sturgeon’s behaviour was initially determined to be typical for fish in new environments, it continued beyond the standard acclimation period. After performing an additional examination that revealed significant internal complications, veterinarians concluded the most responsible action was to humanely euthanize the fish. The statement also noted the condition of the sturgeon was unrelated to the aquarium or the care

The fish came from a commercial farm, Target Marine, on the Sunshine Coast and was not captured from the wild, which would have been illegal. Sarah Schreier, executive director of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society, told the Optimist that while she hasn’t seen the tank in question, those concerned should be aware the spe-
cies doesn’t only live as a so-called “bottom feeder” in rivers. “The condition (farmed) they were raised under is different than in the wild, but the reality is although the fish is considered a bottom feeder, which it is, they also utilize all levels within the water column. So when we do our research in the wild, they do utilize other areas, they come up mid-point, they come to the surface. You can be out in the river and
one will just jump beside your boat,” she said. Schreier noted sturgeon can live in tanks under the proper conditions and a great example would be the Vancouver Aquarium, where several have lived for years. “It does provide for an incredible education opportunity because it’s harder to see them in the wild and garner an appreciation for them,” she said. Schreier added sturgeon are an old and highly evolved species that can live in a number of different conditions. Bass Pro Shops noted it has experience caring for fish with elaborate aquariums throughout North America. “Nobody cares more about the health and wellbeing of the animals than we do, which is why we go to extensive lengths to ensure their welfare with onsite marine biologists and veterinarians caring for the fish in our care,” read the statement.

t was a classy move by the Reach Child and Youth Development Society to put the names of a pair of major supporters on its child development centre now under construction in Ladner. In case you missed it, it was announced last week that the $5-million building adjacent to the Ladner Pioneer Library, which will allow Reach to double the number of children it serves, will be called the Lois Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children. Jackson has devoted more than 40 years of her life to public service in Delta, including the last 17 as mayor, so it was a no-brainer that her contribution to this municipality would be recognized in some way. Given the fact Reach executive director Renie D’Aquila called the support from Jackson and the rest of municipal hall the backbone of the project, it’s fitting her name will adorn the building. It’s equally appropriate that the Kinsmen Club of Ladner-Tsawwassen is honoured after it graciously allowed the Kin House it constructed years ago to be demolished to allow Reach to build a 20,000-square-foot structure to serve local kids. I attended many a function at the Kin House over the years, so I know it was well utilized, but the club’s gesture will ensure the site provides even more value to the community moving forward. *** If you know which British monarch was crowned on Christmas Day, you should go to the trivia night tomorrow at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. If you don’t know the answer, you should really go. Our team, Bryson’s Bad Boys, has taken part in the first two trivia nights and although we’ve enjoyed our time tremendously, let’s just say the results haven’t been quite as rewarding. In our defence, half of our team isn’t old enough to drink and we’ve definitely been hampered by the surprising dearth of horse racing questions. We know we’re never going to catch the librarians, but we figure the more teams that come out, the better chance we’ve got of being somewhere close to average. It’s not too late to sign up for tomorrow’s event, so send organizer Ivor Hewitt an email at ivorhewitt9@ gmail.com. Spectators are welcome too. By the way, the answer was William the Conqueror. But you knew that, didn’t you?
So many positives when kids spend time in great outdoors
C
ongrats to the winners and to all of the participants in the Mayor’s Garden Contest for kids. Categories included flowers, vegetables and best school classroom category. The contest is an annual event to encourage five- to 16-year-olds to get outside and develop a fondness of nature through gardening. There is an assertive approach to developing these types of initiatives in Delta. The Corporation of Delta and the Delta School District are doing their best to promote agriliteracy on our home turf and for good reason. An appreciation for the outdoors and understanding of horticulture is beneficial beyond the obvious. Learning life skills in the backyard or on the school farm is great but there are numerous subtleties that come along with the fun. There are hundreds of studies out there that point to the upside of gardening and farming. Appreciation of growing cycles lends to a greater connection with food and the statistics overwhelmingly show that if kids grow it, they will eat it. Take it one step further with kids cook night at the house and a firm platform for a path toward eating right will develop.
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
Obesity has doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Eighteen per cent of children aged six to 11 were considered obese in 2012. Combined, 33 per cent of all children and adolescents were considered obese. Health problems associated with obesity include cardiovascular problems and heart disease. There is also the high probability of developing diabetes from dietary deficiencies. Nature deficit disorder, a term coined by Richard Louv in the book Last Child in the Woods, speaks to the emotional and mental health issues that can arise from a lack of participation in nature. Kids are spending close to 50 hours a week in front of screens now and 90 per cent of their time indoors. Activities in green spaces have
proven to improve attention and concentration issues. I see it every day. Beyond the physical and mental health benefits of being outside and participating in farming activities, there is a strong social bond that develops amongst the kids. They are happy to be working together on projects that can take math and science out of the classroom and on to the farm. Some children that do not easily adapt in the classroom setting, excel in a different learning environment while shovelling soil, seeding, weeding or just generally getting their fingers dirty. The kids have been taking pride in the fact we don’t use salad dressing during our “tailgate parties” which are essentially salad lunches dished out of the back of the Project Pickle mobile. Some of the young farmers have told me they have coached their parents to add elements of sweet and savoury to their home salads so that mom and dad don’t have to buy dressing anymore. This is an impressive time of the year to be in nature here in Delta. Do yourself and your kids a favour and get out there and enjoy it. Earthwise to lose revenue source
Editor: Re: Room for all at Southlands, Oct. 21 I have some additional information to present with regards to this article. Century has offered Earthwise two acres in the 50-acre farming parcel to be leased from Delta. The earliest this land would be available would be 2019. What is not stated is that it could take a further three years for Earthwise to achieve organic status for this land. Certification regulations for an organic designation are very, very
stringent. Century has clearly advised Earthwise that it needs to vacate its current organic farm to enable construction. If the Earthwise organic demonstration farm is to be demolished by Century, Earthwise will experience a very significant loss of revenue. Currently, proceeds from the sale of organic produce total $40,000 to $45,000 per year. It must also be understood that Earthwise also receives funding from
grants. These grants are contingent upon Earthwise maintaining its organic status. There are other organic farms in Delta, however Earthwise is unique in that it offers a number of programs that benefit this community. One of these is the distribution, through the Delta Food Coalition, of produce to families in need. The loss of this service will make it more difficult for these families to make ends meet. Century advertising for Southlands wrote the fol-
lowing: “The Earthwise Society and their community farming education programs will be a focal point of Southlands Market Square.” Why has the design for Southlands and the Market Square not taken this into account? Is this a deliberately broken promise? For more information about the many programs at Earthwise, go to www.earthwisesociety. bc.ca. There is also a video and a petition available. Drivers failing to turn on lights in tunnel
Editor: On the assumption that the proposed multi-lane bridge will see completion and the George Massey Tunnel will no longer be the primary crossing, a much needed sigh of relief will emanate from thousands of B.C. drivers who will no longer have to wonder why so many of their fellow British Columbians are behind the wheel of a vehicle when by their very actions
they reveal they know nothing about the functions of their vehicles and that they certainly cannot read road signs. How else to explain the reason why so many vehicles transit the tunnel without engaging their headlights as instructed by well-positioned signs. Is that flouting the law or is it simply an inability to read? If it is the latter, then all motorists and pedestrians are at danger
for if these holders of a B.C. driver’s licence cannot read, heaven help others on the roadways when it comes to stop signs, yield signs, merge signs and, of course, all traffic lights. Ignorance of how their vehicle functions ought not to be an excuse of disregarding posted signage. One imagines that drivers know that when their daytime driving lights — as required by Canadian
War historian offers another name for Ladner cenotaph Editor: Thanks to Cpl. Sean Ellis and Major the Rev. Jim Short for their letters in response to Doug Husband’s column about Memorial Park. I especially praise Short’s poignant and expressive description of the reasons for a cenotaph, and I support his call for Stephen John Stock’s name to be added to the others on the granite column. I draw readers’ attention to another young man from Delta, Percy Leonard Devereaux, who used to live over by Kirkland
House. English born, he came with his family to Ladner’s Landing in 1891. His sister Gladys and brother Arthur were born here. In March 1901, the 20-year-old Devereaux left with 1,200 other Canadians to join MajorGeneral Robert BadenPowell and the South African Constabulary. In June 1902 an article appeared in the Delta News (the predecessor to the Optimist), in which his many friends were advised he had died of wounds “while fighting the Boers at
Buffelsdoorn.” He passed away on May 31, 1902, one day before peace was declared in that war. Regrettably, his grave site has become lost, and his name is on two memorials in South Africa. I think Devereaux’s service and sacrifice should be remembered here in Ladner. Perhaps on Nov. 11, when you look at the names on our cenotaph, at least you will think of Sapper Stephen Stock and Trooper Percy Devereaux. I will imagine their names are up there. Peter Broznitsky
Halloween tricks are sometimes no treat
Editor: I love Halloween. Loved it ever since I was little. There is something wonderful about becoming another person, creature or thing for an evening, and getting rewarded with candy. But, in the teen years, somehow it becomes more about “tricks” and less about “treats.” The anonymity of a costume seems to grant
license to behaviours that are gosh-darn antisocial. Lest you think I speak only about teenagers, let me assure you I’ve seen plenty of alleged grownups do stupid stuff whilst disguised. Yes, Halloween tricks and pranks have been part of the tradition for longer than I remember, and I got a long memory. But there’s a fine line between a prank and
criminal behavior. When a prank causes damage or distress to another person or their property, that line is crossed. Parents, please talk to your children/teens/ young adults and remind them that when they cross that line the consequences can be dire. Vandalism/ mischief is punishable under Section 430 of the Canadian Criminal Code. Billy Mitchell
law — are engaged when the vehicle’s transmission is in a forward gear, the vehicle’s rear [red] lights are not likewise engaged; thus, those vehicles transiting the tunnel often simply disappear under most tunnel lighting. The possibility of rear-enders looms large when the vehicle ahead is not overly visible. Perhaps better driving training and examination would correct this defect. Bob Orrick
Community shows its caring side
Editor: Earlier this fall the Delta Hospice Society admitted a patient whose family was from out of town. The family asked if there was anywhere nearby the hospice it could park its motorhome. Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey kindly asked Ken Kuntz and George Harvie at the Corporation of Delta if they had any suggestions for the location of the motorhome. What they did next was overwhelmingly compassionate. They organized the reservation of eight parking spots south of the lacrosse box in Ladner — within the day. The family was able to walk about 100 steps to the hospice to visit their loved one. What a compassionate community we live and work in. Thank you from the family and from the Irene Thomas Hospice. BC
Domestic Short Hair, Black, Spayed Female Adult, (Approximately 2 years old) BC (Also known as Black Cat) came to the shelter as a stray hanging around for quite a few weeks before her finder was able to transport her to the shelter. BC came to the shelter as a chubby lady, we thought she might be spayed already but turns out she wasn’t! Now spayed and settled into shelter life BC is looking for a forever home. Her age is a guess but this recluse lady has been around the block. She’s got street smarts and takes a bit of time to bond to people so we think she was likely living as an outdoor cat or abandoned/lost for a while now. BC has adapted to shelter life pretty well, she’s fully litter box trained and once she gets to know you she’s quite the sweet girl. We aren’t sure how she is with other cats, as sometimes she seems to be tolerant and other times she’s a bit sassy! BC enjoys attention on her terms, she could live with a family but older cat-experienced children are ideal. BC could live in a home with outdoor access but we would recommend she stay inside for quite a few months to really bond to her family before being let outside. This black beauty has stories to tell and we hope her family comes along soon! Could BC mosey on into your heart and home?

Election anxiety
The eyes of the world are on the U.S. election. As we get closer to Nov. 8, you can feel the tension rising. There are the jokes (If Trump and Clinton were stranded on a desert island, who would survive? America). There is the rhetoric, with outrageous accusations flying both directions. There are even realtor billboards that say: “Moving to Canada? We can sell your home.” In Canada, we’re also watching; knowing how impacted we are by what happens south of the border. Someone described it like a house fire. You know it’s bad, but you can’t take your eyes off it. At times like this it may be helpful to see God’s view on what’s happening.
Minister’s Minute
MIKE MAWHORTER Ladner Baptist Church
In Isaiah 40, God gives us a glimpse of our planet from his perspective. He says: 15 Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; they are regarded as dust on the scales; he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust. 22 He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are
like grasshoppers. 23 He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. But he also affirms his love and care: 10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him. 11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Whatever happens, God won’t be shocked and heaven won’t be shaken. We can take hope in him even when things look bleak down here. Mike Mawhorter can be reached at mike@ladnerbaptist.ca.

HAPPY, HEALTHY AND SPIRITUALLY FULFILLED LIFE Much of the advice concerning aging is about trying not to reach it and pretending that old age is something that won’t ever catch up with us. But it can be a time to be celebrated as much as any other time in the full cycle of life and it’s a time when we can find deep self-fulfillment and happiness. For many people, it’s the first time in their lives where they have the chance to fully live without being burdened by the expectations and ideas of others who have impacted them throughout life. To be truly happy in the depths of your soul, inner happiness must be cultivated too and it is never too late to learn how. Don’t conform to age stereotypes. If you enjoy something, get out and do it. If health problems interfere, find ways to work around them and still get into the things that matter to you. Associate with groups of diverse people, not all in your age group. Don’t think of your life as over, look at your future and plan for it actively. Socializing with young people who share your interests is a good way to keep in balance and avoid getting socially sidelined. Practice the five principles of health. It might be tempting to say you’ve reached this point of life without worrying about your health habits but your best strategy for avoiding lengthy hospital stays, autonomy-sapping medical care, and bossy nursing home regimes is to look after yourself as much as possible. Treasure the health you have now and give it a boost by making sure that you stick to these five basic principles: 1. Eat healthy. This includes eating raw vegetables and fruit every day. 2. Avoid or quit unhealthy substances and habits. If you haven’t already done so, now is the ideal time to give up taking drugs, excess alcohol, smoking, and over-eating. 3. Stay active. There are plenty of sports ideal for the older body, and many of these can also involve being around other people (and beautiful scenery if you choose your exercising location well). 4. Try sports like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, and aqua aerobics to maintain an optimal fitness level. 5. Practice positive thinking and cultivate happiness.

oo! Halloween is here Monday and locals are getting into the spooky spirit with eerie displays around town. Here are a few to check out (if you dare): - Tsawwassen’s Peter Rogal is going all out once again this Halloween with a display that includes about 100 jack o’ lanterns. He’s got an “obligatory” grave yard set up in his front yard but it’s the carved pumpkins that are the main attraction. “That’s mainly what people come to see,” Rogal says, noting he’s done around 100 for about the last decade. The jack ‘o lanterns are all hand-carved and while some have basic designs, others are “pretty intricate.” Rogal, who gets some help from his teenage daughters, normally gives himself about a week for

Peter Rogal is creating a display that includes about 100 jack o’ lanterns. his preparations. He’s started using a tool, which resembles a giant egg beater that’s attached to a hand drill, to help save time gutting the pumpkins. His wife bought it for him. Rogal says he “can gut pumpkins in a matter of minutes” with it. He points out that no power tools are used for the carving, however, a process that’s done by hand. He says while his
daughters take photos of the jack o’ lanterns each year, the first 30 or 40 design ideas come right out of his head. He’s also got a propanepowered flaming jack ‘o lantern as part of his display, located at 1097 Bayview Drive. • Brent Coleman is going with a Louisiana/ voodoo theme for his haunted display in Boundary Bay. It’s “a little bit spookier
this year,” says Coleman, who’s making a few additions, including a voodoo priest’s coffin and an “interesting walk” through a “hanging skeleton garden,” to his setup at 28367A St. There will be guided tours on Halloween night, he notes. A “soft opening” happens tomorrow and Sunday. Coleman adds he’s created a pathway for younger kids that’s less scary.
• Local Mistress of Darkness Robyn Balabanov presents the 15th anniversary of her Halloween Horror Delta haunted house display in Ladner on Monday. The display at 5674 Grove Ave. will be open for visitors between 6 and 9 p.m. and treats will be given to all trick-or-treaters in costume. The display features an animated grave stone projection, a dungeon photo area, fog machines, two graveyards with custommade gravestones and various static and animated creatures/bodies. Donations will be collected on behalf of the Delta Fire Fighters Charitable Society. Check out www.horrordelta.com for more on the setup. - Pat McGregor’s Halloween display features approximately 30 figures this year. McGregor’s spooky setup is located at 6007 Crescent Dr. in East Ladner.

Ladner artist Linda Jones and her art students will show their work at a one-day exhibit at the Ladner United Church next Saturday. The exhibition is titled Serendipity and will feature a variety of subjects and styles, explains Jones, who’s been painting for over 30 years and has taught for nearly as long. “Everybody works on their own projects and their own ideas,” she says of her students, who range from youth to seniors. Over 25 students will take part in the show and each will have two pieces on display, she notes. It’s exciting to see their hard work come together for the show, she says. Jones says she’s hoping to have at least 10, and up to 15, of her own pieces in the exhibit. She works in acrylic and encaustics (coloured wax) and recently started painting with oil.

By a happy coincidence, three leading local art societies will present their members’ work next weekend at the South Delta Recreation Centre and next door at Gallery 1710. With light refreshments provided by the South Delta Artists Guild, the shows make early Christmas shopping easy, affordable and pleasant. The South Delta Artists Guild kicks things off with a new visual arts show, Art Has a Voice, on Thursday, Nov. 3 at Gallery 1710 in the Kiwanis Longhouse. The show runs through to Dec. 18. Scores of art pieces, large and small and in choice variety, are for sale during the show. Halloween events get locals into the spirit PHOTOS BY GORD GOBLE
There have all sorts of Halloween activities around the community in the lead up to Monday. NOTICE OF PROPOSAL TO INCLUDE THE PROPERTIES AT 6100 AND 6111 3 AVENUE IN THE AGRICULTURAL LAND RESERVE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that, at a meeting of the Municipal Council of The Corporation of Delta to commence at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the Municipal Hall, 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC, the Municipal Council of The Corporation of Delta will consider a report that includes a resolution to seek Council’s authorization to submit an application to the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission to have the agriculturally-zoned properties at 6100 and 6111 3 Avenue included in the Agricultural Land Reserve. Details of the proposed Agricultural Land Reserve Inclusion application are as follows: LOCATIONS:
6100 and 6111 3 Avenue (as shown on the map below and marked “Subject Properties”)
SUMMARY:
The subject properties include two separate lots with a combined area of 111.5 hectares (276 acres) that were transferred to The Corporation of Delta by Century Industries Ltd. as part of the recently approved Southlands application. Adding these lands to the Agricultural Land Reserve would provide an additional level of protection to ensure the long term use of these lands for agricultural purposes. Since The Corporation of Delta owns both of the lots, staff are proposing that the application be made under Section 17(3) of the Agricultural Land Commission Act. A Public Hearing is not required.
Interested parties have the opportunity to provide written comments regarding the proposal at this time. Comments are to be received on or before 12:00 noon, November 7, 2016. Comments should reference File No. LU008058 and be referred to: Mayor and Council, The Corporation of Delta 4500 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC V4K 3E2 Fax: 604-946-3390 Email: mayor-council@delta.ca

Tsawwassen forward commits to NCAA Division One school for 2018-19 season MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Don’t try to convince Sam Kozlowski the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Prospects Game is nothing more than a glorified skills contest. It was during last year’s event when the 18-year-old from Tsawwassen got the attention of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Tigers. Months later, he has committed to the Atlantic Conference school on a scholarship deal that kicks in for the 2018-19 season. Kozlowski is not even 15 games into his B.C. Hockey League career with the Coquitlam Express yet the NCAA Division One Program, that has won two national titles, flew him to New York earlier this month for an official visit where his commitment was finalized. “The campus was awesome and they had 11,000 fans at their game. (Head coach) Wayne Wilson asked me afterwards if I needed any more convincing,” laughed Kozlowski. “It’s definitely a nice boost of confidence knowing I have this in my back pocket (already) while I’m playing in the BCHL.” Kozlowski came through South Delta Minor Hockey, then shifted over to the Delta Hockey Academy for his Grade 10 and 11 years — suiting up for the Wild’s Elite 15s and Midget Prep teams. “We are very happy for Sam and his success,” said DHA Director Ian Gallagher. “His hard work on and off the ice has led to this tremendous opportunity to play NCAA Division One hockey. We wish him all the best moving forward.” Kozlowski then took his game to the PJHL where he enjoyed an impressive rookie season with the Delta Ice Hawks — finishing second in team scoring with 41 points, including 18 goals. “It was a difficult decision that summer whether to come back to the academy for my Grade 12 year or play junior ‘B.’ I just felt I needed to prove I could play against older guys if I wanted to get to the BCHL,” said Kozlowski. “It was definitely the right move for me.” It didn’t take the Express long to notice Kozlowski’s outstanding
Tsawwassen’s Sam Kozlowski is in his rookie season in the B.C. Hockey League with the Coquitlam Express after a productive 2015-16 campaign with the Delta Ice Hawks. speed and he was promptly affiliated with the club — appearing in three games last season. But it was during the PJHL Prospects Game where he got the attention of RIT. Tigers associate head coach Brian Hills had flown out to Vancouver and attended the game along with Coquitlam head coach Barry Wolff. Kozlowski thrived in the game, finishing with two goals and one assist. Hills came down to the dressing room area to introduce himself after the game and the dialogue started from there. The Tigers also had representatives at last month’s BCHL Showcase Weekend and watched
Kozlowski play well again — this time on a bigger stage. It prompted the official school visit. “The BCHL is definitely a big step but it has been awesome so far,” said Kozlowski who has three goals in 11 games. “I was fortunate enough to score in my second game so I was able to get that monkey off my back right away. I have some great line mates and Barry Wolff is an awesome coach who has a lot of contacts.” To make the transition to the BCHL even smoother, Kozlowski is billeting with a Coquitlam family rather than commuting daily from South Delta for dry land training, team meetings and on
ice sessions. He plans to enroll at Langara in preparation for his Exercise Science degree which he intends to pursue at RIT. Some of Kozlowski’s former South Delta Minor Hockey Association (SDMHA) teammates, who attended the Delta Hockey Academy, have also moved on to higher tiers of junior hockey. They include: Jordan Dawson (Edmonton, WHL), Isaac Embree (Estevan, SJHL), Nick Wicks (Merritt, BCHL) and Jeremy Kelleway (Lloydminster, AJHL). SDMHA alumni Riley Hayles, who attended the Okanagan Hockey Academy, is playing for the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

Ice Hawks look to close out month with another victory Delta Ice Hawks will look to close out a solid October when they travel to the Fraser Valley Saturday night to take on the Mission City Outlaws. The Hawks improved to 5-2 this month with a 4-2 home ice win over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Tuesday. The win vaulted Delta (8-6-0-0) back into second place in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference in what is shaping up to be an interesting race this season. Just four points separate four of the five teams thanks to the much-improved play of the Port Moody Panthers (6-7-0-0). Ice Hawks head coach Darren Naylor, in his first full season behind the bench, is doing a solid job with a line-up that features 15 rookies, including 12, 17-yearolds and two 16-year-olds. Among the first-year players is Alex Suprynowicz who led the way with a goal and an assist against the Flames. Mark Trotman, Henry Rhyu and Mark Epshtein had the other goals. It was Trotman’s 11th goal of the season, surpassing a careerhigh for the 20-year-old who has been highly productive since being moved to forward on a line with rookies Jordan Bogress and Jonathan Stein. Goaltender Jordan Naylor improved to 4-2 since joining the club, making 32 saves. The 16-year-old has a 2.67 goals against average and .916 save percentage. The Ice Hawks also host Port Moody on Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m.

DAKE, Garry Richard .
November 28, 1942 - October 23, 2016 With profound sadness we announce the passing of Garry due to complications from a three year long battle with cancer. Garry was a larger than life personality whose fierce loyalty and sense of humour brightened the lives of those who knew him. His great loves were sport-football, inducted to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the national champion Edmonton Huskies, and golf where he spent many hours of pleasure as a companion to his dear friends and family. History, gardening, art, and family were his other passions. He is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years Diane, his two sons Gregory and Michael, his daughter-in-law Lorelei and two grandsons Alexander and Zachary. His spirit fires us all. TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
