MP reflects on first year
Carla Qualtrough takes look back at her initial 12 months in office SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s been an amazing and rewarding year for Carla Qualtrough. Today marks one year that Qualtrough won the riding of Delta in a federal election campaign that saw the Liberals take an overwhelming number of seats across the country. The shift was a huge one for Delta, especially in the south part of the riding, which had been viewed as a Conservative stronghold. Qualtrough, whose only other previous attempt at political office was a run for the Delta school board the year before, won by a wide margin, and the former Paralympic athlete immediately found herself appointed to a cabinet role by new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Legally blind, but committed to equity and inclusion, Qualtrough who has practiced human rights law at the federal and provincial levels, was appointed Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities. It’s a big appointment for the rookie MP who seems the perfect fit for the role in government committed to making changes. “Of course it’s been exciting, it’s been the opportunity of a lifetime and it’s a huge responsibility. I’ve spent quite a bit of my time thinking about making sure I do right by all the people that put their faith in me. So whether it’s the people of Delta who elected me or the prime minster who gave me this incredible portfolio that merged both

Noting it’s been quite a learning curve, Qualtrough, who set up her constituency office in North Delta, said she has loved every minute of her role, even when sometimes things are challenging. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the MP side. A lot of my job has been behind the scenes or I’ve had to wait for results in court, having to wait for a judge to come down with a decision. And it’s about helping people out on a daily basis with the actual things that are
going on in their lives, it’s so rewarding, making a difference in the lives of families,” she said. “So, someone who hasn’t seen their grandmother in 10 years, we’d help them with a visa application, or someone who hadn’t applied for old age security because they just don’t know how to navigate the system and we help them with that. It’s these small but very significant life changing moments for individuals that’s been really awesome.” As far as travelling, the first-term MP takes a flight home every weekend, only having missed a couple of weekends, leaving Sundays to get back to business in the House of
Commons, as well as her many other duties representing government. “I made a commitment to myself and my team that when I got elected, people would not suffer because I got to be a cabinet minister, so I wanted Delta to feel like I was still present, still involved. And secondly, I needed to see my family. I’ve got one in university and three kids at home still, so I wanted to make sure I was present in their lives for the 23 weeks a year I’m in Ottawa,” she said. “That’s been challenging…you can’t get around the things you miss out as a parent. You hope your kids understand later in life that this has been an incredible opportunity and you’re helping

to make things better for the country.” She said when she’s back in town she’s met many different people and local groups and organizations, as well as attends events, trying to build relationships. “I guess if I had to summarize, I’d say this year probably for me has been about building relationships…I’m very confident if I need an opinion on, let’s say, how would this idea impact small business, I can call someone,” she said. Qualtrough also said she is excited about her involvement in “ground breaking accessibility legislation” which will eventually become a new law. “So a pro-active way to address systemic barriers to Canadians with disabilities and it’s going very, very well. So we’re in the middle of our cross country consultations, we’ve met with groups across the country, we’re still ongoing with that. We hope to have a report in February and new legislation in fall 2017,” she explained. “I’m getting more and more convinced this will transform how we talk about disability in our country.” Qualtrough, who recently launched her Constituency Youth Council for Delta, added the entire experience, so far has been meaningful. One example is getting feedback from a grandmother, whose granddaughter has limited vision and other challenges, who wrote saying she’s been given hope the girl won’t not be held back because of her disabilities.

Against Port Expansion says it’s in possession of a confidential Vancouver Fraser Port Authority document that shows the weakness of the business case for the proposed Terminal 2 project at Roberts Bank. The group notes member Susan Jones has analyzed the document intended for government departments only, a document that APE contends is passing off assumptions as facts in order to get support for the new container terminal. Some of her observations, APE states, includes Vancouver container business failing to meet even the lowest case forecasts in five reports commissioned by the port, between 2007 and 2014 Canadian traffic has remained flat and that the port’s assertion container ports are operating at 85 per cent capacity is untrue. APE notes a number of puzzling questions need to be answered including whether the wild forecast
assumptions being thrown about are being used to subvert the work of the environmental assessment process. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, in response, issued a statement by Robyn Crisanti, director of public affairs, noting that as an agent of the Crown, it regularly provides information in a variety of ways to federal, provincial and local government officials and responds to questions and assertions raised by them, as well as aboriginal groups, stakeholders and members of the public. “We actively respond to questions on a range of topics through, for example, community meetings, presentations, newsletters and responding to inquiries received through our website, email and social media channels. Our responses regarding the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project summarize information which is, and has been, available publicly throughout the planning and development of the proposed project over the
past six years. Detailed information about the proposed project, including the government briefing note, is available at www.robertsbankterminal2.com or through our Community Office at 5225A Ladner Trunk Road in Delta. We also welcome anyone interested in learning more to drop by our Delta office to have a coffee and chat with a member of our team.” That response didn’t directly answer to APE’s questions about the forecasts justifying T2. The port authority last year submitted an environmental impact statement following four years of scientific study and consultation. Now undergoing a federal panel review process, T2 is a proposed three-berth terminal that would provide 2.4 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent unit containers) of container capacity adjacent to the existing three-berth Deltaport terminal. The project is part of the Port of Vancouver’s Container Capacity Improvement Program.

Delta has plenty to say in submission to panel
Federal review underway for Port of Vancouver’s application to build Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
There’s plenty the Corporation of Delta has to say in its submission to a panel reviewing the Port of Vancouver’s application to build Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank. Civic staff outlined a lengthy list of questions and concerns recently for the federal review panel tasked with gathering submissions and eventually holding public hearings.
Staff had gone through the port’s extensive environmental impact statement – 11 large volumes of information that triggered the review after their submission – and have come up with a number of issues. Sean McGill, director of human resources and corporate planner, said the municipality at this stage is looking for more information and not stating whether it’s in favour or opposed to the project.
Among the things Delta wants the panel to consider are the economic rationale in light of the rapidly changing global container shipping industry, expanding the assessment to consider direct cumulative impacts of a doubling of road and rail traffic in Delta, steps that must be taken to expedite the establishment of a world-class spill response system, as well as the role of inland ports. The public consultation
period wrapped up last month, after which the panel will take some time to consider the submissions and possibly ask the proponent for more information. The public hearings aren’t expected to begin until next spring at the earliest. Noting new information has recently been released making a further strong case against T2, Against Port Expansion’s Roger Emsley said, “What is
very clear is that the damage that will result were RBT2 to go ahead will be immediate and irreversible. Mitigation will not be possible. “The key question: Is the whole panel exercise one that is simply going through the process with the decision to proceed already made, or will they recognize what many have been saying for years, no more industrial development on Roberts Bank?” According to the port,
the extensive work behind the environmental impact statement looked at the potential environmental, economic, social, heritage and health effects of the project, including cumulative effects. The document includes proposed mitigation measures to reduce, avoid or offset potential effects and describes the monitoring and follow-up program that would be undertaken to ensure mitigation measures are effective.

Delta Hospital welcomes orthopedic surgeon DAVE WILLIS

Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Matt Lewington was welcomed to Delta Hospital Tuesday during a celebration event which also marked the arrival of a new orthopedics surgical unit. Delta Hospital Auxiliary president Robbi Schultes, one of the speakers to welcome Lewington and his wife Laura at the event held at the hospital’s Courtyard Café, said the auxiliary is happy that the hospital “can now offer some orthopedic procedures, albeit as day surgery.” “Whenever I speak anywhere I always tell people that as well as foot, ankle and sports injuries, you also do bunions,” Schultes said, drawing some laughter from the crowd. She noted the auxiliary is funding all the necessary surgical equipment as well as a cast unit in partnership with the Delta Hospital Foundation. Orthopedic surgeries will be performed in the Surgical Daycare Unit at

Dr. Matt Lewington (third from left) and his wife Laura (second from left) were welcomed by Delta Hospital director of clinical operations Dr. Tarnia Taverner (left), surgical daycare patient care coordinator Karen Nichvalodoff, Delta Hospital Foundation interim executive director Lisa Hoglund, Delta Hospital Auxiliary president Robbi Schultes and others at an event Tuesday. Delta Hospital and will include foot and ankle injuries, bunions, forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot arthritis, instability and stabilization, and ankle arthroscopy, a press release notes. Orthopedics is an area of great need for expansion in Fraser Health, said foundation vice-chair Ingrid Barnes. “Some patients wait a long time to get orthopedic surgeries done. Now, some relief can come to this,” she said. “Also, it’s
great when our hospital can address an issue that usually sends patients to other healthcare facilities in the Lower Mainland.” Lewington is from Halifax and is a graduate of Dalhousie University’s medical school. He said he’s felt “so well-supported” since coming to Delta. “I look forward to building an example of what a small hospital can do when everybody works so well together, like you guys already do,” he said.

t’s hard to fight that kind of logic. When highway improvements were undertaken to accommodate the traffic to be generated by two mega malls on Tsawwassen First Nation land, it was determined that a pedestrian overpass would not be part of the work. Despite the fact the malls, with more than 8,000 combined parking spots, would add a significant amount of traffic to a highway that already services B.C. Ferries’ busiest terminal, it was deemed that pedestrians and cyclists would be perfectly safe crossing seven lanes of traffic. Municipal officials have rightly been pushing for an overpass, recognizing that such a situation is a tragedy waiting to happen, but have got nowhere with their provincial counterparts who insist the intersection at Highway 17 and 52nd Street doesn’t meet the threshold for an overpass. The report from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure that rebuffs Delta’s request for an overpass uses three Lower Mainland intersections it deems comparable as they all provide pedestrian access to commercial centres via at-grade crossings of busy highways and/or arterial roads. One is on Lougheed Highway in Pitt Meadows, another is on Lougheed Highway in Coquitlam and the third is on Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby. The only problem, as Delta points out, is that none of the examples adequately replicate the situation in Tsawwassen. The Highway 17 crosswalk is 40 metres long, whereas the three so-called comparable locations have crosswalks between 27 and 33 metres in length. And the 80 km/h speed limit on Highway 17 is only duplicated in Pitt Meadows; the other two areas have speed limits of 60 km/h and 50 km/h, respectively. When crossing distances are shorter and speed limits are lower, I’m not convinced we’re getting a real applesto-apples comparison. I guess if you’re determined not to spend $5 million for an overpass, you’ll use whatever means necessary to justify your decision. Those who know the area and use the intersection, particularly on foot, realize that an unsafe situation has been created, one that can be rectified with a pedestrian overpass. Hopefully we don’t have to endure a tragedy before the provincial government comes to that same conclusion.
Agricultural groups have deep roots here in Delta
A
s a long-time Ladner resident, it is a privilege for me to delve into Delta’s earliest history and lifestyles of pioneers wresting a place to live from the flood plains of the Fraser River delta. The earliest European settlers faced almost insurmountable odds of annual floods lasting for months on end, soils awash with saline content and land crisscrossed with a multitude of sloughs. No permanent residents domiciled the Delta lands until the mid-1800s, yet within two decades dikes built by farm labour were continuously susceptible to flooding, while roads and drainage programs were underway. These resourceful and hard working pioneers hewed a modest living from land and river and set about forming a community. It amazes me the level of dedication and sophistication exhibited by Delta’s early leaders. It took little time for land owners to create the Corporation of Delta and set out the basic tenants of community living. Nine years after incorporation, Delta farmers and business leaders gathered to establish a constitutional framework for furtherance of their interests. On April 26, 1888, the Delta Agricultural Society was registered in the land registry office in Victoria. Article 1 of its constitution so stated: “It shall be the
Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND
object of the society to encourage the raising of improved stock, the use of the best methods in the cultivation of the soil and to foster household arts.” The first meeting of the duly constituted society took place on July 21, 1888 with John Kirkland elected president with an executive and board of 11 leaders from business and farming interests. Prior to incorporation, the organization acquired 24 acres from the Trenant public school reserve to be used as agriculture show grounds. The society continued its mandate with its high profile and popular Paterson Park track for trotters and pacers until its public closure in 1968 with limited use thereafter as a training track for harness horses. In 1993, the society sold 10 acres to Kwantlen College with a commitment to incorporate an agricultural component into its curriculum. The Corporation of Delta owns the
remaining land. This sale dramatically affected the society’s activity and purpose. While it continues to own acreage outside the civic centre, actively farmed, the society continues under stewardship of farm leadership as a philanthropic organization without rival in our community. It was described by Delta’s MLA in the provincial legislature “as an organization that has improved Delta’s farming character and strengthened the heart of our community for well over 110 years.” Service clubs and charitable organizations benefit from financial support, and guided by its original mandate, Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust receives funding, crucial in supporting wildlife conservation and soil management. Thanks in large part to this funding Delta farmers provide an average of 540 acres of tall grass habitat and 3,200 acres of winter cover crops for migratory waterfowl. Its younger sibling, the Delta Farmers’ Institute, established in 1898 now with over 100 members, has a current goal: “To keep the business of agriculture economically viable and sustainable for future generations.” The continued action of these two organizations bodes well for Delta’s future. And a good night to you, Jack. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Losing farm is soul-destroying GIANTbook sale
Editor: Re: Southlands Update, Oct. 14 Earthwise is losing the farm. Century Group refers to “the temporary Earthwise Farm” and states that “the future Earthwise Farm component” will be included in land adjacent to the development to be leased back (to Century) from the Corporation of Delta. This is the first mention of a temporary farm. It will take up to five years to reestablish the farm and the “when” and “where” or even “how much land” is
not clear. As a not-for-profit enterprise, the loss of grants and farm income over an extended period will be devastating to the society and its ability to provide community organic farming education and food security programs. From the beginning of the Southlands development proposal, Earthwise has featured prominently in Century’s advertising as it portrayed a vision of small-scale community agriculture to the community. These quotes are from its website up until the time of project
approval: “At the heart of the Market Square is the Earthwise Society… As the working model for the Southlands communitybased farm, Earthwise Farm and Garden will be the feature of the Market Square and Public Plaza…. The integration of smallscale farming, local food production and everyday life of residents will be built around the foundation that Earthwise Society has modeled.” Does this sound like a temporary farm? Why has the vision changed since Delta council approved
the development? Why is Delta allowing this to happen? As I write this letter, the Earthwise Farm is being dismantled. As a community member, I, along with hundreds of other volunteers, have dedicated countless hours to building this community resource. Here is a place where we can make a difference to our sad planet. To see this treated as insignificant is soul destroying. Anne Powell Earthwise board member

MLA supports Delta’s call for overpass
Editor: The provincial government needs to act immediately and install a pedestrian overpass at Tsawwassen Mills. It is downright scary watching people try to cross nine lanes of traffic, especially at night or in
inclement weather. A recent report from Delta clearly shows pedestrian infrastructure at the intersection of Highway 17 and 52nd Street is inadequate. We’ve seen pedestrian islands fill up beyond capacity during peak periods, and with Tsawwassen
Commons set to open, safety concerns are only going to get worse. I have – once again – asked the minister of transportation to revisit his decision and have urged him to reconsider Delta council’s request that he fund a new pedestrian
overpass. Safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike should be top of mind and we shouldn’t have to wait for a death or serious injury before the province takes action. Vicki Huntington Delta South MLA

Can minimum wage workers get ahead with raise?
Editor: I have been giving a lot of thought to the possibility of the minimum wage
being raised to $15 an hour. I wonder if minimum wage workers would
really get ahead as everything else would increase as employees pay their employers a higher wage
and basically we would be in the position as we are now at $10.85 an hour. Carol Plante

SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS KEEPS COMMUNITIES THRIVING

employees who rely on us for their livelihood and if you don’t support that local business and it closes, then what?” Matheson asked. “Culturally, I think it’s important to have stores like us that have been here for a long time. We have been here since 1981 and we have seen the community change — certainly nothing to the extent of what is happening with the new mall — but if we are not here the feeling of the community will change. With businesses like us, we know our customers — we try to know most of them by name when they come in. You won’t get that feeling in other places. You will just go there to shop instead of coming in for an experience.” Both Ridley and Matheson support as many local organizations as they can, saying the more support they get from the community, the more they can give back. Notary public Daniel Boisvert agrees that support by residents is crucial to the success of the overall community. “Just like you would support your neighbour when they go on holidays by picking up their mail or watering their plants, the same sort of thing can be said for supporting a business in the community,” Boisvert said. “We all want services closer to us, not further away, and the only way to ensure that those services remain here is to give them the support. Be-
ing a local businessperson, when I go shopping I want to shop here and support as much as I can.” He said as a small business owner, supporting sports groups and non-profit organizations is an easy trade-off and vital to the success of any community. “I support sports because my kids are in sports and without that where would this community be? community connections are what make Gayle Budnick of Boutique Blanche a proud local business owner. In Tsawwassen for the past 26 years, she said the community has certainly changed, but the small businesses help to keep that small town feel. “There was not a lot of boutique stores when we moved here. he retail landscape is changing in Tsawwassen with the opening of two malls on Tsawwassen First Nation land. Whether these changes are good or bad for existing small business remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the existing businesses want their customers to know how important it is to support local business. Community involvement helps drive many local merchants. It’s certainly a big reason why Kevin Ridley, owner of The RunInn, has been in business in Tsawwassen for 15 years. “Our focus has always been local, whether that is the numerous running clinics we hold throughout the year, the events we host or the events we help sponsor,” Ridley said. “You have to show that you are more than just a retailer. We probably get 20 donation requests a month and most of those requests are from customers. If a customer is supporting us, we will go out of our way to do as much as we can to support them.” Ridley said his biggest frustration or worry with the new malls is that a lot of times people think you’ll pay more at a specialty store, which he said isn’t the case. “All of our prices are set by the vendors. You are paying the same money here as you are at SportChek, but you are just getting a lot better service and that personal touch when you shop at stores like ours,” he said. “Shopping local keeps the core of our community strong.” Keeping a community strong and vibrant is certainly a shared philosophy by other business owners. Bob Matheson from Home Hardware said if people don’t support local business, it has varying negative effects on the community. “It affects not only the business but also the employees of that business. I have 31

Salmon projects receive grants
Over $5,600 given for local efforts The Pacific Salmon Foundation recently granted more than $5,600 for two Pacific salmon projects in Delta. The total value of the projects including volunteer time and community fundraising is more than $105,000. The Foundation’s Community Salmon Program supports habitat stewardship, Pacific salmon enhancement and watershed education, and is funded primarily from sales of the federal government’s Salmon Conservation Stamp. “We are pleased to support all of the projects by the Burns Bog Conservation Society and the Cougar Creek Streamkeepers,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Pacific Salmon Foundation in a news release. “They are good examples of salmon education initiatives, which is a key component of our Community Salmon Program.” The projects in the
Delta are for the Burns Bog Conservation Society, Stepping into Nature Festival, Cougar Creek Streamkeepers and the Gray Elementary School rain garden. The Foundation’s Community Salmon Program supports community groups, volunteers and First Nations across the province. All give countless hours each year to monitor watersheds, develop and implement habitat rehabilitation projects, and educate communities about the conservation and protection of salmon. The program requires grantees to find local matching funds for projects. On average, grantees raise an additional seven dollars for every dollar they receive through cash and in-kind donations at the community level. The majority of funds generated each year for the Community Salmon Program come through sales of the federal Salmon Conservation Stamp.

Taking the
election pulse
Point Roberts in
Reporter visits American peninsula to talk with voters about a wild and wacky presidential race
! Democratic precinct
chair Virgina Lester is a proud supporter of Hillary Clinton. Lester thinks Clinton will make a wonderful president.
She then handed me back my passport and wished me a good day. I knew then I was in for a fun morning of political conversation. Driving around Point Roberts, you would be hard pressed to know that a presidential election is only a few days away. Most of the community is devoid of political signage, but those that are spotted are all for Trump, proudly displayed on front lawns, in living room windows and one taking up the whole front windshield of a parked semi-truck. After stopping at the real estate office where an interview is politely declined, I pop my head in next door at the water district office. The two ladies behind the counter laugh a bit when I ask them what they think of the election campaign. Neither offers up their name for a formal interview, but one does call the campaign an embarrassing joke, saying she doesn’t want to vote for either
candidate and wonders that of all the people that could have been selected to run, were “these two” the best that could be found? Down the road I arrive at Nielson’s Building Center where there is lots of political chatter once I introduce myself. One man, who again does not want to give his name, calls the campaign a mess. “I’m voting for the lesser of two evils, which is Donald Trump,” he says. “Trump tells it like it is. We need someone to go in there and clean house. I think he really means to do well by the people.” Louise Cassidy, a 33-year Point Roberts resident, is a dual citizen. She is working inside the building center and tells me this will be the first presidential election she will be voting in. “The only wasted vote is a vote not cast,” she says. “When people say a vote for Trump is taking a vote from Clinton and a vote for Clinton is taking a vote from Trump, it’s just nonsense. Your vote is your vote. “The campaign is awful. It has sunk this time to the lowest common denominator. You would expect that people running for our highest political office would act a lot more presidential.” Cassidy says she doesn’t want to speculate on how the vote will go on Nov. 8, but she does say she expects many people across the country may choose to write a candidate of their choice on the ballot. “What many Canadians don’t know is that in the past someone could write in Goofy, Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, but now I hear many, not around here mind you, but many in other states, that they will write in reject them all or none of the above to make their voices heard,” she says. “It could get very interesting.”

I really didn’t know what to expect as I pulled closer to the border crossing to enter Point Roberts, Wash. On assignment to speak with locals about the upcoming U.S. presidential election, I had no idea who would want to talk, let alone admit they’re going to vote for either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. When I reached the U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer and explained to her why I was coming across, she just smiled and offered up this: “Well, here is how it’s going to shake down on election night: if the Republicans win, then 50 per cent of us are moving to Canada and if the Democrats win, then 50 per cent of us are moving to Canada.”

The rhetoric has been very vile and disruptive from both sides and not indicative of the campaigns we should be having.” After leaving the community center I head to the Compass Rose Bar and Grill at the Point Roberts Marina to meet with Elizabeth Lantz for lunch. picked up any sense on which way it will shake down here, but historically Point Roberts usually breaks Democratic when you look at our governors or state representatives, so I would guess it would be the same for the president,” Robbins says. “It’s horrible, bizarre, it’s the strangest presidential campaign in my lifetime. Trump has tapped into something that is real and even valid, and so did Sanders, but they are so different in how they both channeled that desire to somehow break the status quo in unhappiness of the establishment of both parties, but Sanders, in my opinion, was very constructive, positive and forward looking and Trump is just the opposite, in my opinion, so it’s a very, very strange year, but we’ll see what happens.” It’s no secret who Democratic precinct chair Virginia Lester is voting for when she walks into the community center carrying her Hillary Clinton sign. She is eager to chat and share her thoughts on the campaign. Lester has lived in Point Roberts for 15 years, and was an active supporter of Clinton in the 1990s when she worked for the nurses union in California. She has continued to back Clinton and thinks she will be a wonderful president. She says this election doesn’t seem to have generated the same level of anger in Point Roberts as it has in other areas of the country. “People have a lot of different thoughts and we all get together and have a good time and take care of each other because we are isolated. We are part of the U.S. actually hooked to Canada so it makes it more difficult to be a part of a larger organizational group,” Lester says. “My next door neighbour is a very good friend and she is a Trump supporter and I don’t understand that, but that’s OK, that’s her right and it’s my right also to believe the way I believe.” Lester agrees the election campaign has been crazy. “What I really worry about is how much chaos and mistrust can

Being a Friday, it’s seniors’ day at the Gulf Road Community Center, so lots of folks are coming in the doors to enjoy coffee, lunch, socializing and a game of pool in the back room. I’m greeted with open arms and friendly smiles when I arrive, with many folks eager to share their opinions. Nine-year resident Matt Baldrick describes this election campaign as a real gong show, expressing how dissatisfied he is with what’s going on in American politics. “There are other parties — like the Green Party. We need a system where we can see better representatives from the other parties,” he says. “The mud slinging has become very popular in American politics and it has gotten to a whole new level. Now with how connected everyone is to cell phones, etc., information is everywhere, but you can’t tell what is fact or fiction.” Henry Rosenthal runs the Point Roberts Food Bank. He’s inside helping coordinate the lunch before heading off to the International Marketplace to pick up stock for a later food run for clients. He says life in Point Roberts is very interesting being that 65 to 70 per cent of the homes are Canadian owned and when you factor in the 1,300 to 1,500 permanent residents, with many of them dual citizens, the political talk is polarizing. “There has been lots of talk in the election. A couple of caucuses were held and there has not been too much support for Trump,” Rosenthal says. “The Democratic caucuses were split between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. I personally favoured Sanders, so I’ll be voting for Clinton.” Mark Robbins, president of the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association, is an 11-year permanent resident. He arrives a short while after me for a planned interview. He says he leans towards the Democrats after caucusing for Obama in 2008. He caucused for Sanders this time around and will be voting for Clinton. “I don’t really feel like I’ve

Many years ago in rural Quebec, a young woman gave birth to a son on the first day of November. She wanted to call him “Tout Saint” – or All Saints – fortunately for him, his father stepped in and suggested a more common name, one that could be shouted out on the ice rink in the midst of a game of hockey. Nov. 1 is a day of remembrance in the church. On this day we remember those who have gone before us and walked with faith. We call it, “All Saints Day.” I would never for a moment suggest that my dear friend is hardly a

“saint” nor has he lived a “saintly” life (according to him). But then again, I have to remember what it is that is said about the
saints of God. Paul seems to infer to all who gather to worship God are indeed called saints. That includes a whole lot of folks! When you read about those good and holy people of our past, you begin to realize that they were ordinary people like you and me. Their passion was to serve both God and their neighbour as God would ask them to serve. I believe that question that I need to ask is, “if I am to be a “saint,” how can I live my life faithfully so that the generations to come might benefit”? Can you imagine that you too are called to be a saint – what will you do?

agic and comedy will come together at a variety night show at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre next week. The show will include performances from magicians Care Elise and Jordan Vo and will also feature stand-up comedian Damon Blais (aka The Angry Albino) with more
magic from Ray Roch. Students from the arts centre’s magic and storytelling class for kids will also get to perform. Elise, a storyteller, and Vo, a sleight of hand artist, are the hosts. “Our show is very much a comedy magic show. We like to make people laugh,” explains Vo. “We’ve been doing a lot of family orientated shows, so it’s all about trying to make sure everyone has a good time.” Vo says he enjoys performing and likes the fact
it brings the imagination into the real world. Magic can be like music in the sense that it can make people feel emotions, he says, giving wonderment, happiness and amazement as examples. “Sometimes it can make you feel like you’re somewhere else,” he says. Elise says that for her it’s about sharing a special moment with an audience, whether it’s one person or a whole theatre full of people. “It’s about that moment,
drawing them into that and sharing something of myself that they get to take away, which is really unique I think,” she says. The variety night is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. Doors are at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 or $5 for kids. Call 604-9439437 for tickets or get them at the door. The upcoming show is part of a series of variety nights, in partnership with the Corporation of Delta,
on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. Shows will take place primarily at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. - Elise and Vo are also instructing magic classes for kids at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Junior Illusionists (ages six to eight) and Magic & Storytelling (ages nine to 12) classes run Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. from Nov. 9 to Dec. 14. To register go to http:// deltareg.ca or call 604-9523000.

I hate to rule out the dudes, but today’s column is for the ladies. It’s about our heart health and how we can protect our beating hearts. However, with that said, men’s and women’s hearts are physiologically the same. For instance, we each have four chambers, with four valves that regulate the flow of blood in our heart. It’s the heart’s job to pump blood through the body, providing our body with oxygen and nutrients, while carrying waste away. It is also responsible for falling in love, and sometimes, falling out of love. The average heart will beat around 100,000 times in a day (unless you come to one of our fitness classes - then tack on another 500 beats), and pump about 7,570 litres of blood daily.

Face off against zombies in collaborative card game DAVE WILLIS
d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A Tsawwassen family has developed a zombiethemed collaborative card game. Sharon Sutherland, Mark Meredith and two of their daughters, Darsey and Cailean, are behind Zombie Fight or Flight. The card game originated from a “Game Jam” event held at the family’s home. “We sat down trying to create collaborative games,” says Sutherland, a mediator and conflict resolution trainer.
She started hosting Game Jams as a way to bring together professionals interested in using games to teach collaborative skills. Zombie Fight or Flight was the game that got the most traction amongst participants at the last Game Jam in June as it was easy to learn and adaptable to different ages. The card game can be played with anywhere from two to eight players as they search for safety as a team. “There are many, many ways you could
die, it would appear,” says Sutherland with a laugh. Vancouver artist Rachel Petrovicz created the artwork for the game’s deck of cards. A Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has been started for Zombie Fight or Flight. The basic level of support, $26, is required to get a copy of the card game. The Kickstarter campaign closes Saturday, Nov. 26. It can be found here: https://www. kickstarter.com/projects/1837579030/zombiefight-or-flight.

Devils capture Fraser Valley title
Girls field hockey takes momentum to next week’s provincial championships
MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A familiar trophy is back in the hands of the South Delta Sun Devils senior girls field hockey team after a two-year hiatus. The Sun Devils are once again Fraser Valley AAA champions thanks to an unbeaten run last week at Tamanwais Park. South Delta is now gearing up for the provincial “AAA” championships which start Wednesday in Surrey. “One of the goals we set at the start of the season was to get the trophy back so it’s great to see the girls do it,” said longtime coach Neil McLennan, who has now guided SDSS teams to 17 Fraser Valley titles. South Delta avenged last year’s championship game loss with a
2-1 victory over longtime rival Gleneagle. The Devils broke a 1-1 tie with a second half goal then relied on their young defence to hold the fort — especially with the Coquitlam school pouring it on in the dying minutes of the match. That’s where experience gained at tournaments last month in Duncan and Victoria have paid dividends. The Sun Devils roster features six players in Grade 10 and another in Grade 9 with only three slated to graduate. Two of those Grade 10s are starting defenders. “Learning to play under pressure and battling your nerves is a big part of it,” continued McLennan. “These girls play club hockey but, emotionally, it’s just a different level with higher expec-
tations in high school. The girls held up well.” South Delta opened the championships with a win over Riverside then had its hands full with another Coquitlam school — Charles Best — squandering a two-goal lead then managing to pull out a 3-2 victory. McLennan’s outlook on the provincials is guarded as usual for good reason. Over the years, he has seen teams loaded with seniors not make the expected run towards a podium finish, while others have come out of nowhere to earn a provincial medal. That was the case two years ago when a young South Delta team lost 3-0 in the Fraser Valley final to Heritage Woods, only to produce a surprising bronze at the
B.C. tourney. The goal is to get through round-robin play with a top two finish in their group and see what happens in the quarter-finals. “The way the girls are playing right now, a top eight finish is realistic,” added McLennan. “We had a slow start last year in our first game against McMath and it cost us. We have to make sure that doesn’t happen this time.” The Sun Devils roster features: Grade 12: Kyra Kuramoto, Jess Goodfellow, Annie Poohachoff. Grade 11: Bailey Mitchell, Abi Smart, Katie McCarvill, Kate Knoedler, Aimee Calder, Bri Lyseng. Grade 10 Charlotte Lee, Mady Ajomandi. Aliyah Smith, Eve Carrothers, Elise Ridley, Annika Vaughan. Grade 9: Kayla Guraliuk.
Hasselbach among B.C. Football Hall of Fame inductees
Arguably the greatest player to ever come out of South Delta Secondary School has been inducted into the B.C. Football Hall of Fame. Harald Hasselbach was one of five athletes in the 2016 class. He did not attend the induction ceremony but was represented by his former coach at South Delta — Ron Uyeyama.
Born in Amsterdam and raised in Tsawwassen, Hasselbach was a force for the Sun Devils before taking his career to the University of Washington. The defensive end was then selected in the 1989 CFL Draft by the Calgary Stampeders where he played for four seasons and was a league all-star in 1993.
Hasselbach signed with the NFL’s Denver Broncos in 1994 and enjoyed seven solid seasons — highlighted by back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1998-99. His best campaign in Denver was in 1995 when he started in 10 games and registered four quarterback sacks.

winding and difficult to navigate. That didn’t bother Garrett who placed sixth out of 56 entries in the Men’s Grand Masters (50+) singles event. Rowing fast for this race requires not only strength and endurance but also a technical approach to avoid penalties for errors. Garrett had an almost fault free performance, finishing in a time of 19:38.18. The event was won by Cambridge Boat Club’s Gregory Benning.
