Delta preferred as casino host But BCLC says T&C location isn’t suitable for gambling and entertainment facility SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta residents could be dropping some cash in the slots but where exactly has yet to be determined. The B.C. Lottery Corporation announced Wednesday that the Corporation of Delta has been chosen as the preferred host local government for a potential new gambling and entertainment facility. Overseen by a thirdparty fairness monitor, BCLC says its evaluation committee selected Delta based on a variety of factors including strong market potential, community plans and transportation access. The potential gambling facility in Delta would be a relocation of Surrey’s Newton Community Gaming Centre, currently just a bingo hall, which would be expanded to include more gambling and entertainment options. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Ltd., the private-sector service provider of the Newton facility, would own or lease the potential gambling facility in Delta on BCLC’s behalf, and operate it on a day-today basis. This summer, the lottery corporation asked three

Surrey declined but both the Corporation of Delta and the TFN submitted expressions of interest, which included answering a series of questions regarding community plans, zoning and whether the government would be able to amend any restrictions within six months. The TFN submission stated it had areas zoned for entertainment but those

uses do not include a casino, so a rezoning would be required. It’s the same answer provided in the Delta submission. Both also answered they currently have no restrictions that would limit the number of slot machines or gaming tables in a future facility. Unlike Delta’s submission, which included the Town and Country site as its location, the TFN didn’t specify where a casino would be located. When Delta council approved the Town and Country location, civic

staff noted the potential gaming facility would require significant additional amenities, including a hotel, conference centre and restaurants, to support Delta’s tourism strategy. The amenities would make the proposed gaming facility in Delta a complete entertainment complex and tourist attraction. However, the lottery corporation now says it determined that Delta’s choice is not a suitable location “due to its distance from the identified market opportunity and its proximity to the River

Rock Casino Resort. In collaboration with Gateway, BCLC will determine a more suitable location that, combined with size and scope details, will form a gaming facility proposal for Delta’s consideration.” It’s not clear where the new Delta facility, which still has to go through the municipal approval process, could be relocated. Council had passed a motion stating the Town and Country site was the only suitable spot, but that’s going to have to change. Mayor Lois Jackson said they’re still early on in the entire casino process. “We’re in a very middleof-the-road position. We’ll go through the process and if something comes forward that looks amenable, obviously we would take that forward to council and go from there. Nothing is cast in stone in any way, shape or form…it would still all have to go to public hearing,” she said. BCLC spokesperson Angela Koulyras said it’s Gateway’s responsibility to identify a suitable location and BCLC will work with the company, coming up with a proposal that will be formally submitted to Delta. There’s no timeline for when that will happen.

structure, which once housed city hall, at the corner of Delta and Bridge streets to become home for a new community police station and publicly accessible washrooms. The building is in need of a comprehensive upgrade to improve public access and address health and safety concerns. The upgrade includes the installation of an elevator as well as the demolition of the old yellow annex structure at the back of the building. Originally designated as a heritage building in 1983, the building also requires structural stabilization, removal of hazardous materials including lead paint and asbestos, removal of partitions in order to open up space and extensive upgrades to heat, ventilation and electrical systems. Last summer, the federal government announced $500,000 would come to Delta to help rehabilitate the building, which at the time still houses the museum. Delta had already set aside money and had been seeking federal grants to upgrade the old structure, which had long been deemed unsuitable by the museum for its needs. The total renovation cost is estimated at $2.5 million, so the federal grant lowers Delta’s cost to $2 million. It wasn’t clear where the museum would end up once it left the premises and renovations commenced, but the museum society had already indicated it didn’t want to go back to the old city hall. That problem was solved this year when Delta proposed to the

society that a new facility be located in the former courthouse building in Ladner’s civic precinct, adjacent to the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room. However, the society would have to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Corporation of Delta for the municipality to assume operational control of the future museum, a proposal accepted by the members. They were told of the benefits, including being able to host interactive exhibits and events at the new 8,500 square-foot facility and that the society would continue to be involved, as well as have a representative from the board becoming a member of Delta’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission. The new museum is to open in 2017. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz recently told council that despite moving out, the museum is still active. “Museum staff have been assumed by the

municipality as municipal staff. So the curator and programmer are carrying on work with the school district now to ensure that programs occur during the school year and at special events the municipality may have,” he said. “So they’re operating out of (separate museum office and programming space) out of 4918 Delta Street. That’s the interim location until our new location will be ready at 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent…the work in that building is continuing on the upper floor right now. That is for the new police activities on the upper floor. Once that is done, we will turn our attention to the lower floor and we’ll be developing that as space for the new museum location.” To keep the displays at the new museum fresh in order to keep it current and relevant to a wider audience, Delta will establish a special reserve which will see $85,000 come from parks, recreation and cultural admissions.

The former museum building will undergo major renovations.

Diefenbaker Park is going to get another new attraction for kids. Delta council this week approved providing $30,000 toward a community initiated cost sharing project by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen to build a new music-based play space. The club has committed to contributing another $30,000. The club wants to install an outdoor play area that will have durable percus-

sion instruments for children and youth, referred to as a musical garden. A report to council notes music, especially direct involvement with the creation of music, has been shown to have many benefits for kids. The Rotary club, which brought a new outdoor water play area to Diefenbaker Park a couple of years ago, has been involved in numerous community oriented projects, such as the inaugural Soap Box Derby in Tsawwassen this summer,

the annual tree-lighting in the park during Christmas season as well as the water fountain and stair counter installations at Fred Gingell Park. Diefenbaker Park attracts children and families for a variety of features including the water play park, playground, picnic area, passive trails, movie nights and concerts in the park. The new musical garden, that will be called Harmony Musical Gardens, would be added to that list of attractions next year.

Delta housing market cooling off Statistics from real estate board show nearly 40 per cent drop compared to October 2015 sales SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The days of rapidly rising house process in Delta have skidded to a halt. The latest stats from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver for last month showed another decrease in residential property sales with a 38.8 per cent drop compared to sales recorded in October 2015, and a 0.9 per cent decrease compared to September 2016. Last month’s sales were also 15 per cent below the 10-year October sales average. “Changing market conditions compounded by a series of government interventions this year have put home buyers and sellers in a holding pattern,” said REBGV president Dan Morrison. “Potential buyers and sellers are taking a waitand-see approach to try and better understand what these changes mean for them.” The “benchmark price” for a single-family detached house in Ladner

However, it’s still 30.1 per cent higher compared to October 2015. For Tsawwassen, the price was $1,253,400, a 1.3 per cent dip from the previous month. However, once again, it’s still 31.3 per cent more than a year ago. Until the

province introduced a new tax on foreign buyers this summer, housing prices saw sharp monthto-month increases with Tsawwassen leading the way in overall price percentage increases from year-to-year. Now, Tsawwassen doesn’t lead the pack in year-to-year increases. The government

orn two decades after the Second World War ended, as a child I tended to view armed conflict as an abstract concept, something that happened long ago and far away. Although it was drilled into me that we must pay tribute to the men and women who have served our country, as the last great war got 30 years, then 40, in the rear view mirror, it was hard not to see a sense of complacency among my generation. We didn’t perceive any pressing threat to our freedoms and it wasn’t like our contemporaries were signing up to go into battle, so it was natural to think that war, at least on a global scale, was something confined to the history books. We can be eternally grateful that we haven’t seen another conflict of the magnitude of either world war, but as the years have gone by that sense of security has slowly but surely been eroded thanks to continued unrest in other parts of the world. We undoubtedly live in one of the safest places on the planet, but we’ve seen how conflicts playing out elsewhere can rear their heads, with tragic consequences, much closer to home. These acts of terrorism provide a fresh perspective on the need to protect a way of life and a set of beliefs and values, as well as the sacrifices that are sometimes required in order to achieve such goals. The high-tech world we live in makes a full-scale ground war a most unlikely proposition, but technology also means those who would do us harm have avenues now available to them that never existed before. It is a different time, to be sure, but it all adds up to a debt of gratitude to those men and women who served through a variety of conflicts during the 150 years we have been a nation and a deeper appreciation for those who are doing so at the present time. We live in a tumultuous world, far different from a century ago, but much the same in the sense that threats to our way of life continue to exist. We must be vigilant in protecting our freedoms and be ready to support allies that require our help. As we observe Remembrance Day today, we pay our respects to those that fought, and in some cases died, serving our country. We also must show our appreciation for those that continue to do so.

Others have paid the price for the freedom we enjoy

T

oday is Remembrance Day, a date set aside almost 100 years ago to allow us to pause and remember the horrors of the great World War – now referred to as the First World War. In that Great War a Canadian expeditionary force of 620,000 people (more than eight per cent of the entire Canadian population) was mobilized and served. More than 37 per cent were either wounded or killed, including whole units from Newfoundland and Saskatchewan being decimated by battles. “Shell shock”, now called PTSD, ruined the lives of many who returned. Fast forward only two decades and we found Hitler and Mussolini in charge with promises to lift their countries out of poverty and depression by invading other counties. Meanwhile in Japan the dream of being a pacific power brought on invasions in much of Southeast Asia. The Second World War was on in many places. Years later, with Canada contributing over a million soldiers, airmen and women, sailors and merchant seamen, the war drew to a close with success in battle in Europe, the Pacific,

and with the atomic bomb in Japan. Lessons were not learned and the war over the Korean peninsula broke out. Once that war ended disputes in the Middle East broke out with Suez and other places, and more recently Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. In these recent wars, Canadian troops have been on the front lines, and Canadian blood has been shed in those conflicts. A half century ago our then Prime Minister, Lester Pearson, helped the UN to create “Peace Keepers”, complete with blue berets. That worked for a while until warring factions in Africa shot their way right through the UN troops – as our General Romeo Dallaire can tell you.

A decade ago I was able to walk the Second World War Burmese railroad, hand chopped through rock by Australians, British and American POWs. Few survived the impossible conditions and forced labour. We need to end wars and learn to work things out! We also need to acknowledge and care about those Canadian soldiers who died in duty. Remember those have returned from duty damaged physically and mentally, and especially those who have struggled with PTSD. Battle-hardened souls have been unable to cope, and have taken their own life back here in Canada. We need to do more for them – so much more! Today, in addition to paying our respects to those fallen and suffering, we need to acknowledge that there are 65 million – yes million – displaced people – twice the population of Canada. We struggle just to feed them with little left to figure out where/how we can help them find homes and peace. Others have paid the price of our freedom. We are the fortunate ones! Ian Robertson is former Army officer who has lived in South Delta for three decades.

See and be seen while driving

Editor: The points brought up by Bob Orrick, E. Tobin and Surrinder Basi in recent letters to the editor concerning vehicle headlights and turn signals are valid and I hope that drivers will take them to heart. However as far as the use of headlights I would like to add the following: Why do we only have mandatory driving lights on the front of the vehicle and not at the rear? It is important to see the vehicle you are approaching and in rain, fog and twilight this is difficult if the rear lights are not on. There is no reason not

as you drive. In some parts of Europe they have high intensity rear lights that can only be used in bad conditions such as fog, rain and snow, making the vehicle easier to see. This apparently has reduced the number of highway accidents in addition their front and rear lights are always on when the vehicle is in motion. Finally, please use your lights at all times, but especially when visibility is reduced. See and be seen. It might just save you injury and damage. Richard Turner

Land won’t be given up without a fight Editor: Re: Preserve industrial land: port, letter to the editor, Oct. 26 Robin Silvester of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority tells us that… “the port authority is not advocating for the industrialization of agricultural land,” and then proceeds to persuade the reader there is a significant shortage of industrial land in the Lower Mainland. He quotes an unidentified report as stating that 2,500 acres of land needs to be preserved for future industrial uses to support

growing West Coast trade – presumably marine trade through Deltaport. Whose report is this? Presumably one commissioned by the port authority is my guess. And if this 2,500 acres is to be sourced in the Lower Mainland, then it follows that Silvester expects at least some of it to be agricultural land. What is this if not advocating for the industrialization of agricultural lands? Does he expect this industrialization to happen like night follows day?

Local woman finishes Camino trek

Tsawwassen’s Dawn Repin walks in remembrance of her husband IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A journey of healing, hope and fundraising is now complete for a Tsawwassen woman. Dawn Repin set out on Sept. 20 from Sarria, Spain and walked the six-day, 114 km final leg of the Camino Trail to the Cathedral in Santiago without blisters, aches or pains. The walk was in remembrance of her husband Peter who died in October 2015, five years after being diagnosed with Idiopathetic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). The journey was a chance for Repin to reflect on her life with Peter and to help raise awareness and funds for the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (CPFF). She said she is thrilled by how the journey went. “When we started the

first day we had to climb a large stairway right at the start and I thought, well this could be interesting, but we did it. It was a very humbling experience,” recalled Repin. Along the way, she found a special spot along the path to place a memorial stone for Peter. Peter worked in the planning department at the Corporation of Delta from 1972 until retirement in 1999. He was a wellknown, active member of the community coaching hockey and baseball in the 1980’s. He was also a participant in the Little House Society appreciating and promoting the help it provided him and the community. “The countryside, company of other women with life stories to share, the encouragement from family and friends and the financial support for CPFF were inspiring and

humbling,” said Repin. “The walk certainly served its purpose to raise awareness of the disease and to also remember Peter. It was healing for me in so many ways.” CPFF provides funds for research into causes and treatments. Presently, a lung transplant is the only option for people who qualify. Domestic Short Hair, Tortoiseshell, Spayed Female Senior, (Approximately 9 years old) Molly has been a housecat since birth, when she was spayed she was also four foot declawed (She has no nails at all). Molly was going outside in her previous home but she MUST be an indoor only cat as she lacks proper defenses against predators. Molly doesn’t get along with other animals and would do best being the queen of the house. Due to her declaw Molly must always have soft clay kitty litter and a clean litter box. Molly is a big sweet lady who LOVES treats and will forgive anyone for a cookie. Her favourite thing to do is nudge and head butt hands, legs and anything she can rub against. This sweet girl can get pretty snuggly and excited so a home with adults or older cat-savvy kids are recommended. Molly needs someone to turn her life around..

This year the campaign runs from Monday, Nov. 14 through to Thursday, Dec. 1, with 63 drop-off locations. Drop-off locations in Delta include: Best Builders Ltd. - #103 5461 12th Ave; Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4

Making a safe cycling community

Delta Police Department and HUB partner to promote awareness about rules of the road IAN JACQUES

he Delta Police and HUB Cycling Delta are working together to ensure that cyclists, motorists and pedestrians share the road safely and cooperatively. Both have partnered recently on a number of initiatives to promote safe cycling and the rules of the road. Patrick Thompson, chair of the Delta HUB Committee said in recent months citizens in the community have contacted Delta Police expressing concerns about cycling choices of some riders. “In particular, there have been citizen concerns relating to riding on sidewalks, in groups on the road, as well as travelling without lights in the dark,” said Thompson. “Delta Police then contacted us and we have been working together to come up with ways to educate and inform the public.” To raise awareness about the rules, the Delta Community Police recently organized bike safety blitzes in Tsawwassen. “We conducted a threeday blitz in Tsawwassen in late September and early October at different times and locations with our partner ICBC. We focused on identifying and engaging the community and emphasized safety and the rules of the road. It was a great success,” said Const. Leisa Schaefer of the Tsawwassen Community Police Station. “Our focus is around safety and making sure everyone is safe whether they are cyclists or pedestrians. There are rules and regulations that need to be followed. There are responsibilities that come with riding a

There are rules governing how we do that safely.” Delta HUB is a volunteer organization that has been active in Delta for the past two years. The Delta committee is part of the larger Cycling Vancouver HUB group, which has 10 local branches in communities throughout the Lower Mainland. “Our focus as a committee here in Delta is on cycling safety, which falls into two areas — safe cycling practices — and safe cycling infrastructure, how people get around,” added Thompson.

our attention that a lot of the agricultural workers who are here for a long time during the year might ride on sidewalks and don’t have proper bike lights. We realized maybe no one has actually communicated to them what the rules of the road are. So we created this poster and distributed it to the Delta Farmers’ Institute and the greenhouses in hoping that it will become part of their orientation session.” Both Thompson and Schaefer said their coop-

eration has had a major impact on the community in bringing about positive awareness of safe cycling. “I think the success of our collaboration is predicated on our mutual priorities to protect the vulnerable road users: cyclists, pedestrians and motorists,” added Thompson. “We recognize that no one wants to have these conflicts and part of it is reminding people what the rules of the road are. As the community develops and our demographics change we want to continue to promote and encourage cycling and cycling safely.

Safety advice for drivers and cyclists

Drivers • Allow one metre between your vehicle and the cyclist: Even though cyclists are required to ride as near as practicable to the right side of the of the road, they may need to veer towards the centre of the lane in order to avoid obstacles such as stones, potholes, manhole covers or a slippery patch of road. • Change lanes to pass: When passing a cyclist, change lanes if safe to do so to create as much separation as possible.

• Be cautious when opening car doors: When exiting a vehicle parked along a curb, always check your mirrors and blind spots before slowly opening your car door. A collision with a parked car can result in serious injuries for cyclists. • Keep your distance: Cyclists do not have brake lights to warn you when they are slowing or stopping. Always keep a safe distance. • Keep out of bike boxes: Bike boxes help prevent col-

lisions between bicycles and motorists at intersections. Drivers must stop behind bike boxes at intersections, leaving the space available for cyclists. • Check your blind spot when turning right: When making a right turn at an intersection, always use your indicator, and check your mirrors and blind spot before turning. Cyclists • Be seen, stay safe: B.C. law requires that cyclists use a front white light and a rear red

light after dark and that bicycles must have a bell or horn. Lights, reflectors and bright clothing help drivers see cyclists at night. • Wear a helmet: A properly worn helmet will protect your head in a fall. • Small children: By law, small children must be seated in an approved child’s bicycle seat or bike trailer. It’s illegal for two people to ride on a bicycle in B.C. unless it’s a tandem. • Watch for people walking: Stop when people are on

crosswalks and let them go first. When passengers are getting on and off busses or school busses, cyclists must stop a reasonable distance from the doors and allow them to safely cross. • Stay safe beside cars: Always keep control of your bike and be aware of cars and people walking. Look around you and ride in a straight line or signal if you are turning or changing lanes. Ride at least one metre away from parked cars to avoid getting hit by car doors opening.

Telling the story of Sidney Rich

Filmmakers travel to Europe for documentary on Ladner soldier killed in First World War SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It was a powerful moment during the filming of the story of a young Ladner man who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War. Cliff Caprani and fellow Delta resident Kathy Cuthbert have been working on a documentary about Sidney Rich, who was killed in the second battle of Ypres on June 3, 1916. They travelled to Europe this summer to film some insightful and fascinating scenes. Caprani, who has been making films for 15 years and is the director for the project, titled Countdown to Sanctuary Wood, first got interested in Rich’s story when he saw a plaque dedicated to the fallen soldier on the chapel wall at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner. The only son of a pioneer Ladner family, Rich was an early volunteer for the war effort and enlisted in the Motorcycle Scouts.

His profession allowed him to qualify for the position of range finder, considered a dangerous one in the army. When his death was announced in the local paper, he was remembered for his kind and genial manners and as a friend of many. Caprani travelled with a group that included, among others, Cuthbert, who is the producer, and her two sisters, Barb Wadey and Sue Legault, who are all Rich’s grandnieces, to in Folkestone, England, where Rich was stationed. Some of the group then went off to Sanctuary Wood, near Ypres, Belgium. They were accompanied by Stephen Binks, an historian and tour guide who did extensive research for the group. “If you know someone who’s served in the First World War, all you do is give him the name, rank and serial number and he goes to the archives and then finds exactly what happened to this person. If you give some details, he

We had dates and places, when things happened and finally got to this place where Sydney actually died, Sanctuary.

We will never forget those who sacrificed their lives for us to live in freedom.

Clearly the place had grown back and it’s all farmers’ fields and lush vegetation now, but even still, to be back in that part of the world where it actually happened and to actually stand close to where the trenches would have been, that was kind of powerful,” he said. Caprani said both sides in the war kept “phenomenal records’ which made finding exact locations, as well as getting close to

exact locations where soldiers died and where they were buried, much easier. He noted that while Rich’s body was never recovered, he did receive a brief burial ceremony and the small area where it likely occurred was located. “It was remarkable to be there and I had known ahead of time that Stephen had found this. So I prepared something to make it a bit more special. In my

research, Sydney had been a surveyor in Canada and I found out that surveyors had used railway ties to mark out plots of lands,” Caprani said. “I went to an antique shop in Langley and bought one and had it engraved with some dates and his name on it, and presented it to the two sisters who buried it under one of the nice trees there. I also had a pastor in Calgary prepare a short prayer I was able to read and it was actually very emotional, I almost didn’t get through it. It was very touching and emotional for all of us.” Caprani is now editing his film, trying to get it down to the mid-80 minute range. It’s a tough process, he said, adding there’s a lot of fascinating material about the research process that will end up on the cutting room floor. Once completed, he plans to show the film to local groups, and perhaps Delta schools, before showing it elsewhere.

On this November eleventh, we are here ....standing before you. Poppies a blaze, and our faith is anew. Sleep peacefully. For, your sacrifice is not in vain. We treasure your torch ….held high, your will radiant within the flame. We vow to preserve and protect, as you have shown us the way. Inspir ed, vigilant and united we stand, on this Remembrance Day.

History buff works to unravel mysteries IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

There are currently 27 names on the cenotaph in Ladner. Who were these men? What were their ties to the community? And why are these names listed and others not? These are just a few of the questions that resident and self-described history buff Peter Broznitsky has been trying to answer for the past several years. In 2008, three years after he moved to the community, Broznitsky embarked on trying to unravel this historical mystery. “When my son was born in 2003 I decided to get some information on his great grandfathers who both fought in the First World War. That led to other projects and when we moved to Lander in 2005, I went down to the cenotaph and wondered who these 27 names were,” he recalled. “It’s been very interesting. I’ve found out some great details about these men.” He said one of the great challenges is simply ask-

Peter Broznitsky is researching the names on the Ladner cenotaph.

ing the question why some names are listed and others are not. “After the war, there were no guidelines given on what could or could not be on the cenotaph or even the design of it,” he said. “Each village, hamlet, city in Canada pretty much had free reign and in a lot of cases, people put an ad in the local paper asking what should be on their local cenotaph. Other times people sought out names. There was a committee formed here in Delta, but the minutes of all of those meetings are nowhere to be found, so again we really don’t have

any explanation as to why those 27 names are on there and others are not.” He said originally there was a 28th name that was supposed to go on. His name was J.W. McDowell and there is still no explanation as to why his name has been omitted. “There are several other guys who were born in Ladner, but yet their names are not on the cenotaph, so again, it all depends on the criteria and since we don’t have that criteria, it’s puzzling.” Three names that he is currently seeking more data on are: William McLennan, Robert Scott, and S. Montgomery. “In the Canadian Virtual War Memorial, the William McLennan combination is listed five times, Robert Scott 13 times, and S. Montgomery two times. Montgomery is likely a man who lived in Mission, so why is he on our cenotaph?” Broznitsky said. “As for J.W. McDowell, this is likely John Lemuel Waddell McDowell. Apparently his sister was the brother of a Charles Nelson of Ladner, so why did he not make the cut?”

Please join us at 10:40am, this Friday at the Ladner Memorial Park Cenotaph to pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives in war so that we might live ours in peace.

MacKenzie was appointed Chief of Staff Army Reserve last September. Faithfulness over feelings

Luke 16:10 If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. Hurt, misunderstanding, offence they happen to us all, but they can actually be used to grow us in our call. At each crossroad we have to decide what we allow, to lead us into the future. Our feelings will grab the steering wheel and try to redirect our path. Hurt will ask you to make haste and run, misunderstanding will manipulate and offence will say retaliate. Often, what began as a small problem, has quickly escalated by unchecked emotions. Yet I have found

Minister’s Minute ANDREAS BASSON

Pneuma Church

that growth happens in the difficult places, where I had to choose faithfulness over feelings. Committing in a time when I feel like quitting and letting my anchor not my anger direct me. You see faithful-

ness is easy in the good times but it becomes often the ground the enemy is most after in the hard times. He wants to undo in a moment what has taken you years to build. He loves to divide what you have worked so hard to unite. Knocking down what faithfulness and longevity has labored to leave. However, some of the best growth and greatest breakthroughs happen when we place our choice to be faithful over our feelings. Today whatever you face, allow your next words, deeds and choices to be first overwhelmed by God’s faithfulness, and then guided by your own commitment to live with faithfulness over feelings.

The show takes place Saturday, Nov. 19 and features photos from Ronan Considine, Tyler Garnham and Rick Pelletier. There’s a heavy local focus to the show with almost all of the photos having been taken in Ladner. “We’ve all been shooting here forever. So we have a big library of stuff to choose from,” says Garnham. He notes there will be well over 50 large format prints on display. Considine said shooting locally allows them to show off where they live.

“Ladner is kind of a little, smallish, out of the way place but it’s a little gem not a lot of people know about,” he says. Pelletier, who taught both Considine and Garnham photography when they were high school students at Delta Secondary, said he likes shooting locally since Ladner is similar to where he grew up on the East Coast, giving the abundance birds as an example. They are also all members of the dioptiks photography collective, a small local group that puts on shows and gets together for meetings. Pelletier is also doing the printing for the exhibit. “He was a printer even before he was a teacher,” says Garnham. “We like to be able to go to him to get our big format prints made, because they’re made perfectly.” The exhibition, titled alluvium, is set for

Video game focuses on climate change UBC researchers develop Future Delta with help from local high school students and teachers IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

As augmented reality continues to break through into every day life, UBC researchers are using similar technology to teach high school students about climate change. The Future Delta video game, based on the community of Delta, lets players see a bleak future where little was done about climate change. Then, exploring challenges facing the Lower Mainland like floods, sea level rise, heat waves, fires, blackouts and people’s energy choices, players take on the role of making a better future. The video game has been four years in the making for the team at UBC. “The game was developed and built with the help of the students and teachers. We tested it out in two high schools — Delta Secondary in Ladner and then North Delta Secondary,” said

The Future Delta video game has been four years in the making. UBC principal investigator Stephen Sheppard. Sheppard said the team recently completed its research and evaluated the results of the testing from the students. “Basically the results showed that the video game was fun for the students,” he said. “They

overwhelmingly preferred it to learning out of a textbook, so that was one goal we wanted to establish. “They [the students] did also clearly learn quite a lot about climate change — basic concepts like mitigation and adaptation — but also how to see their local landscape a bit

SUBMITTED PHOTO

differently and how to see climate change in their local backyard. We were pleased with that. They certainly had some positives and negatives of the game and gave us some great feedback.” The Future Delta 2.0 team recently received seed funding from

the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council to expand beyond the Delta School District to youth audiences across Canada, and hopes to create an app version for mobile devices. “Given that it [the video game] has been so enthusiastically received by everyone and seems to be a successful way of getting youth engaged in climate change, we are now exploring how games like this could be spread around to other schools and school districts,” Sheppard said. “This is their future. These are the kids who will be living through the impacts of climate change. Right now they don’t have a lot of good information, or what it will mean to them and their communities.” Sheppard said this video game could just be the start of a greater educational component. “There is lot of evidence that talks about the power

of video games and these interactive and social media games,” he said. “They obviously work pretty well, but the problem is they don’t seem to be scaled up much or mainstreamed into education, so there is a gap and a barrier between developing these things and getting them embedded into schools. “There are math games, climate science games, but ours is a bit more comprehensive and is very play spaced. The kids play in neighbourhoods. They recognize that it is a special twist that we feel makes our game unique. It takes time, but we have to find ways to make it really easy for teachers to use and for schools to adopt. One of the good things about the Delta school board is that they have been cutting edge in terms of developing different learning tools and helping kids to be more engaged. I think they are a leader in teaching in the region.”

The rousing classic about a charming con man and his seventy-six trombones

Documentary to be shown in Ladner The Delta-Richmond chapter of the Council of Canadians hosts the Delta premiere of To the Ends of the Earth this Tuesday, Nov. 15 in the multi-purpose room of the Ladner Community Centre at 7 p.m. To the Ends of the Earth follows concerned citizens living at the frontiers of extreme oil and gas extraction, bearing witness to a global crossroads. They call for human ingenuity to rebuild society at the end of the fossil fuel era. The film’s creator is

Vancouver filmmaker David Lavallee, the moving force behind the award-winning documentary White Water, Black Gold. He will be at this exciting event to answer questions and lead off discussion. Renowned Canadian poet Stephen Collis will introduce the film with a reading from his recent poetry anthology Once in Blockadia. The documentary’s title draws our attention to the rapid shift that occurred following the collapse of regular conventional

crude oil in 2005. The collapse led to the ‘new energy age’, epitomized by rabid tar sands developments, fracking and mega pipeline projects. Living in the midst of an internationally recognized ecological zone, Delta and Richmond residents are keenly aware of the importance of environmental issues and concerned about the impact of climate change. The film aims to inspire viewers with examples of positive alternatives and community initiatives.

Chasing Bond in the Swiss Alps JAMIE ROSS

Optimist contributor

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m doing something active and exciting, I hear the James Bond musical score playing in my head. Such is the case today, as I am driving the narrow, winding switchbacks and cliff-hugging roads in Switzerland. I suddenly imagine that my rental car is an Aston Martin. I push the pedal down and make squealing tire noises with my mouth as we swerve around the tight curves. My wife, who is accompanying me, begins to feel shaken, not stirred, and the Bond theme is replaced by a certain ringing in my ears. But you know the secret agent drill – sharply dressed, daring mission, chic travelling companion (in this case my angry wife). Our dangerous assignment today has us up early to get ahead of the crowds, and cruising along the serpentine mountain roads of the Jungfrau

region in search of the ultimate Bond movie villain’s lair. Our destination, Piz Gloria, is located on top of Schilthorn peak, a 2,970-metre summit in the Bernese Oberland, above the charming Swiss alpine village of Mürren. It appeared in the 1969 Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, as the mountaintop hideout of 007’s nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Looking for a location to film, the producers found a lift company in Mürren that needed funds to complete a cable car to the top of the Schilthorn and a restaurant they were building there. The film company helped with the financing in return for the right to use the complex. In the movie, Bond spends some time here with a bevy of beautiful ladies, takes off down the mountain on the obligatory ski chase and then returns by helicopter to destroy the whole place. We access the peak via three cable lifts, the final stretch being the long-

The View from the “Top of the World.” est aerial cableway in the Alps, and find Piz Gloria very much intact and well worth the visit. Stunning panoramic views greet us. We enjoy brunch at the revolving restaurant while taking in an unworldly landscape that includes over 40 mountain peaks and 20 glaciers. After spinning around in the sky-high café eating smoked salmon and cheese and sipping on champagne, we head downstairs to visit the

interactive Bond World Museum, where you can try your hand at piloting a helicopter to the peak on a simulated flight, or get the feeling of bobsledding down the mountain while shooting at evil Spectre agents. Reminders of the building’s storied history are everywhere. The souvenir shop sells everything Bond, hallways are decorated with large stills from the movie, and outside is the viewing deck where

helicopters landed in the film. A just completed, hairraising, glass skywalk hugs the sheer mountainside beneath the tram, affording spectacular views down the Lauterbrunnen Valley, one of the most beautiful waterfall and glacier canyons anywhere. In the movie, several bad guys plummet off these sheer 800-metre cliffs into the valley. In the real world, people pay to do that in tandem paragliders. Though we could have stayed and watched the paragliders and skiers all day, we have to be off to our next Bond location, skirting Geneva and the 2,429-metre Furka Pass that was used as a location in Goldfinger, onward to the southern Swiss city of Locarno. A bungeejump off the 220-metre high Verzasca Dam in the opening sequence of the 1995 movie Goldeneye has been called one of the best stunts in film history. We learn upon arrival this is not just a photo

opportunity to get some shots of the enormous dam where the famous leap took place, but it is also the ultimate adrenaline rush for tourists willing to shell out 255 francs ($300 Cdn.) to emulate their favourite spy on a 7.5-second freefall. Fortunately for me, the jumping card is full on this sunny afternoon, so as the sensible 007 actor did in the film, I decide to use a stunt double. The Bond films have long proved a compelling inspiration for travel, the super-spy’s duty to queen and country flinging him from one exotic location to another. So grab your passport, hum the 007 tune and go off chasing Bond, without any obligation to wrestle your foes at the edge of a cliff in the Swiss Alps. New role for Ice Hawks captain

Quinten Wideski serving as an assistant coach as he recovers from knee injury MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

That new assistant coach behind the Delta Ice Hawks bench must seem very familiar to many opposing players in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. Quinten Wideski was all set to captain his hometown team for a second straight year until a serious knee injury promptly disrupted his final season of junior hockey before it even started. In a pre-season game against the North Vancouver Wolf Pack back in late August, Wideski was involved in an awkward collision. “I was just leaning for the puck and some guy jumped in the way and we collided knee-on-knee,” he recalled. “Both sides (of my knee) were killing. I couldn’t even stand and haven’t been on the ice since.” The Ice Hawks paid for Wideski to immediately have an MRI which revealed a torn MCL and damage to his ACL as well. A full evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon at Richmond General Hospital set his recovery time for three-to-six months. The hope is he can return sometime in early February, shortly before the PJHL playoffs. “My ACL was hanging by a thread but since it was not completely torn, you don’t have to have surgery. You can bring it back with the right exercise,” he explained. “The timeline is probably closer to six months. I have been going to see Travis (Wolsey) once a week at Sungod Physio. “I hope to be back on skates in late December.” Initially, the Ladner native took the news hard. At 20, there is no next season to look forward to in junior hockey.

He was one of the few returning veterans and was going to provide leadership to a young team. That’s why Hawks head coach Darren Naylor had already planned to add Wideski to his coaching staff even before the extent of the injury had been determined. “It was a tough pill to swallow for my last season. I was looking forward to playing with the older guys one more time and having a good year,” continued Wideski. “I was still pretty flustered about the injury when Darren came up and asked me. He said I was still a big part of the team and how the younger guys looked up to me. “I can’t play hockey forever and it might be something I want to do afterwards.” Wideski has essentially continued his captaincy from behind the bench. His role has helped the Ice Hawks put together an impressive season to date. Delta improved to 12-6-0 with a 2-0 win over North Vancouver on Tuesday night — the club’s ninth win in its last 11 games. “I’m still more a friend to them than a coach. There is no yelling,” smiled Wideski. “I tell the players what I see and what little things might help them during the game. “It’s a lot different not being on the ice and in the play but, honestly, I like it. I could see myself doing this.” Under Naylor, the Hawks are well on their way to one of their best regular seasons in recent memory despite a very young roster that features 14, 17-year-olds and two 16-year-olds. He took over the coaching reigns late last season and promptly guided the team to an upset playoff series win over defending champion North Vancouver. They currently sit just two points back of confer-

With such a young team you would think they would be timid but they are holding their own. “Darren really understands young players and they love to be coached by him.”

Fraser Valley volleyball playoffs go next week at DSS & SDSS

The high school volleyball spotlight will be on Delta and South Delta Secondary Schools next week as they host the Fraser Valley Championships. The Delta Pacers will enter the senior boys AAA tournament with high expectations. The Ladner school is currently ranked No. 3 in the province and will have an excellent chance of winning its first Fraser Valley title in

16 years. The Pacers will host a quarter-final game on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The semi-finals go on Thursday at the same time, while the championship match is next Friday at 4 p.m. Other teams in the hunt include: Walnut Grove (#4), Earl Marriott (#5) and Semiahmoo (#7). Meanwhile, the South Delta Sun Devils have

been seeded third for the Fraser Valley AAAA senior girls championships. The top 10 ranked Devils will likely play No. 6 seed Semiahmoo in next Wednesday’s quarterfinals (8 p.m.) A win would set-up a potential final four date with No. 2 Lord Tweedsmuir on Thursday at 8 p.m. The tournament’s top seed is Earl Marriott, while Seaquam is No. 4. The final goes next Friday at 8 p.m.

SDSS student athletes sign with NCAA schools MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Four South Delta Secondary School student athletes are officially taking their promising careers south of the border in the fall of 2017. Ashley Klassen (beach volleyball), Jayde Robertsen (volleyball), Amanda Minni (golf) and Paul Zou (swimming) signed their National Letter of Intent on Wednesday with their respective NCAA schools. It was the first signing window for the 2017-18 school year recruits. Klassen made a verbal commitment to Florida International University last spring and has been busy clearing the necessary hurdles since, including writing her SATs. She actually made an official visit to the Miami campus a year ago. The Panthers have one of the top beach programs in the country. “Now I can just enjoy the rest of my Grade 12 year, knowing where I am going,” smiled Klassen, who was a first team provincial all-star in her Grade 10 year at SDSS. “I know a lot of people who are freaked out a bit right now about applying to schools and it’s something I don’t have to worry about anymore. It’s gone quicker than I thought.” The recruiting process has been a very quick one for Robertsen. She had initial talks with Eastern Washington University about three months ago and soon after travelled to Spokane for an official to the Big Sky Conference school. “My family lives in the Kootenays which

National Letter of Intent signees (left to right) Amanda Minni (Oregon State), Paul Zou (Pennsylvania), Ashley Klassen (Florida International) and Jayde Robertsen (Eastern Washington). is about a two hour drive from there,” explained Robertsen, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker. “I really enjoyed the campus and it was what I wanted. My mind wasn’t completely made up right away but I kept talking to the coach and he came up here to visit me. I knew for sure after that.” Despite recruiting north of the border in the past, Robertsen will be the lone Canadian on the Eagles roster. It was only fitting Minni made her verbal commitment to attend Oregon State University right on her home course. Beavers head coach Dawn Shockley had made the trip to Beach Grove to watch

to come out of the Winskill Dolphins. He is taking his talents to the Ivy League by committing to the University of Pennsylvania. The Dolphins have produced Olympians Markus Thormeyer (UBC) and Noemie Thomas (CalBerkeley) in recent years. The freestyle and butterfly specialist made an official visit to the Philadelphia school in September. “I have friends that went there last year and when I visited the team and campus it felt good,” said Zou, who plans on pursuing engineering. “The swimming and academics is exactly what I wanted.”

The offer was made moments after her final round. “That was the tournament that was going to decide it,” reflected Minni. “I had gone down for an unofficial visit and talked to her a couple of times on the phone but that was the first time she had watched me play. “We went down there at the end of June and I just didn’t see any negatives. Gord enjoyed a few hobbies along the way either spending hours building models related to one of his passions, being World War II aircraft and tanks. He was extremely well read in that period of history. This passion also lead him to serve his country as an Army Reserve Weapons Technician at the 12th Service Battalion in Richmond. His 12 year commitment he was rewarded with several awards and honourable recognition.

Gord was one of the most kind and caring people anyone could know. His sense of humour, at times pleasantly dry, at other times pleasantly warped! brought many laughs to those privileged to be within earshot. Even in the early and latter stages of his illness he managed to get in some laughs. Gordon and his family were very grateful to the staff of Richmond Community Dialysis unit for their loving care and attention.

FOUND

Born 20 February 1962, Gord lived his whole life in Tsawwassen, B.C. He worked for a variety of local businesses taking great pride in serving the public providing cheerful greetings to those who crossed his path.

Another of his great interests was that of being probably one of the biggest Beatles fans ever! Again, his breadth of knowledge and love of this music provided thousands of hours of listening to this epic music and becoming a self-professed Beatleologist! This year a crowning moment for Gord was when he attended a Paul McCartney concert with his brother, Brent, sitting close enough to the stage to be the envy of thousands.
