Delta firefighters were out in force Wednesday afternoon to give blood in support of one of their own. More than 20 firefighters came out to the Canadian Blood Services clinic at the Ladner Community Centre to raise awareness of the importance of giving blood and to help out

16-year-old Connor Sillett, a Ladner teen diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in February. Connor’s mom Gillian works as an administrative clerk at the fire department. ALL is an acute form of leukemia, or cancer of the white blood cells, characterized by the overproduction and accumulation of cancerous, immature white blood cells, known as lympho-

blasts. Gillian said Connor has had to go through chemotherapy and blood transfusions. He is doing better health-wise and the hope is he will be able to return to classes at Delta Secondary in January. “When anyone is diagnosed with cancer you don’t think about blood transfusions, but he had five the first week we got his diagnosis, so I want to get out

the message about how important it is for people to donate,” said Gillian. “It’s just great that the other firefighters are standing behind us. I’m really thankful that the Delta Fire Department is stepping up to create this awareness for the community. People look up to them and if they lead by example then it will help others,” she said. TFN leveraging location

Key partnerships have resulted in residential, industrial and retail developments SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Location, location, location. It’s an old term used to describe a critical component for someone looking to open a business, but it’s also what Chris Hartman credited as a key behind the Tsawwassen First Nation’s growing success that will transform it into a Lower Mainland economic power. Speaking to the South Delta Probus Club on Wednesday, the head of the TFN’s Economic Development Corporation talked about the First Nation’s location as well as how its post-treaty economic activity has been designed using key partnerships to create major residential, industrial and retail developments. “One of the things you have to recognize is we’re very, very fortunate because of our location and we’re able to leverage that.” He talked about several joint ventures and longterm land leases fueling developments that will eventually see 5,600 permanent retail and ware-

Chris Hartman, CEO of the TFN’s Economic Development Corporation, addresses the South Delta Probus Club Wednesday. house jobs on treaty settlement lands, as well as $14 million in tax revenues. There’s also the housing developments taking place on lands owned by TFN members that will eventually bring 6,000 new residents. The results of those long-term leases include logistics centres and the recently opened Tsawwassen Mills shopping mall, as well as the neighbouring Tsawwassen Commons, developments that provide the funding

for infrastructure improvements. Hartman reiterated how it’s those partnerships that will eventually see a new town formed with jobs, amenities and facilities. The TFN has also undertaken measures, including putting its land in the B.C Land Titles Office system, to give investors further confidence they can do business at the First Nation. Following his presentation, Probus members got to ask questions, one

being where the TFN stood on Delta’s call for a pedestrian overpass at Highway 17 and 52nd Street. His only response was that it is a topic of conversation among the TFN, Delta and the Ministry of Transportation that’s “working its way through the process.” As far as the future of the Splashdown waterpark that ended operations this summer, Hartman noted the deal between the landowner and tenant has been terminated but

things are being explored to add a hotel complex at the site, which would be ideally situated next to the new malls. He said a waterslide feature could be part of such a larger complex. Asked about the TFN adding a casino, Hartman said the B.C. Lottery Corporation approached the First Nation, as well as Delta, but ended up choosing Delta. Hartman added a casino wouldn’t have been needed as part of a hotel complex and that the TFN isn’t really interested anyway. He was also asked why a movie theatre wasn’t part of the new mall and responded that it was explored but the industry is confused in what direction it’s going. When one Probus member remarked that the 480 TFN members “must be rolling in the dough,” Hartman answered much of the money coming in is going into trusts to benefit future generations as well as improve services. The members, who are all shareholders, do receive dividend cheques, but will eventually lose their tax exempt status.

Firefighters raising awareness about donating blood CONTINUED from Page 1 Kristy Storey, Dave Mason and Ben Lewis are all members of the department and the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society. Mason said when they learned about Connor he immediately asked how the department could help. “Gillian raised it to my attention that blood supply with their experiences at (B.C.) Children’s Hospital is in really short demand. A lot of blood has to be brought in from out

of province,” said Mason. “We asked if there was anything we could do for Connor and she said not at the moment, but if you think you could get the guys to donate blood that would be a good start. So I presented it to the guys and we managed to get 20 of them, including a few retirees, to come out to donate. The main thing is awareness in the community that blood is in short supply and people should donate all through the year.”

Mason said they hope by donating as a group it will help raise the profile in the community about the important issue. “On the (Canadian) Blood Services website it says only one in 16 Canadians donate blood, which is nowhere near enough, so that is something that we are hoping to change and lead by example,” Mason added. Canadian Blood Services welcomed the group of firefighters with open arms, even bringing

in more staff to accommodate them. “They didn’t have enough space for us. We had others seeing if they could join, so they will go on their own at other locations,” said Lewis. “As a group, we have made a commitment to donate twice annually at certain times so there is a steady supply. Everyone has this vague understanding that people should donate blood.” Storey said giving back to help out Connor, Gillian

and their family made the experience a real personal one. “They have had quite the experience and it’s been a tough time. Knowing that we can help them out and in the process raise the profile of this issue is very important for us as a group,” said Storey. “And the fact that we will be doing this as a group throughout the year will hopefully encourage other groups and more people in the community to donate.”

Pipeline to Delta idea won’t go away Mike Harcourt is latest to suggest alternative needed to Kinder Morgan’s Burnaby proposal SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The idea of rerouting the Kinder Morgan oil pipeline expansion through Delta refuses to go away. More fuel was added to that fire this week when former B.C. premier Mike Harcourt told the media that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should consider a “Plan B” to the $5.4-billion Kinder Morgan proposal. He said an alternate route has to be considered, either to Deltaport at Roberts Bank or to the Cherry Point refinery in Washington state. Concerned Professional Engineers, an independent group of retired and some still practicing professional engineers, added its voice to the debate by issuing a press release warning of the dangers of increasing tanker traffic sevenfold to the current loading facility in Burnaby. The group noted for the past several months it looked at the increased possibility of tankers colliding with bridges.

Kinder Morgan is looking to triple the capacity of its Trans Mountain pipeline. “All it would take is one steering malfunction and the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows crossing could be destroyed, severing the Trans Canada Highway and endangering thousands of lives,” the group stated. It is the same group that filed its opinion with the National Energy Board that Roberts Bank is better suited as a shipping point for Alberta diluted bitumen. Last year, Alberta

Premier Rachel Notley suggested Kinder Morgan’s highly contentious pipeline twinning plan, which has drawn heated opposition from Burnaby and Vancouver as well as environmental groups, might need to be re-routed. She pointed out South Delta as one possibility. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington wasted no time this week responding to the latest suggestion the pipeline should run through Delta.

“Re-routing Kinder Morgan’s pipeline to the mouth of the Fraser River is a clear non-starter. The Fraser River delta is critical ecological habitat for millions of threatened shorebirds and salmon, and a bitumen spill on Delta’s foreshore would be a disaster with monumental environmental, social and economic consequences. I am firmly opposed to any such suggestion and the people of Delta will not stand for it,” she said.

“Mr. Harcourt is the latest in a line of political figures who do not understand the sensitive habitat at Roberts Bank, which is part of the great Fraser estuary. Last year, Premier Notley weighed in with the same misguided suggestion.” Huntington noted Kinder Morgan’s own documents state Delta and other terminus alternatives “would result in significantly greater cost, larger footprint and

additional environmental effects.” Mayor Lois Jackson said she’d rather not respond to the latest Kinder Morgan speculation and will wait to see if something more concrete comes of it. Delta has submitted a number of comments on the proposal, primarily related to concerns regarding response to a tanker or pipeline spill that could potentially impact Delta’s marine and estuarine areas, but has not formally voiced opposition to the project in its current form. Saying Roberts Bank isn’t on the books as a fall back, the company has stated it evaluated a number of potential marine locations on the West Coast, including Roberts Bank, and its evaluation determined those locations were less favourable due to a number of factors, including environmental, technical and economic considerations. If approved, Kinder Morgan would nearly triple the capacity of its Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta to Burnaby.

t’s only taken 30-something years, but we’ve come full circle on the Southlands. OK, so perhaps the circle isn’t completely enclosed, but Delta’s pending application to return a sizable chunk of the Tsawwassen property to the Agricultural Land Reserve will at least close the door on a saga that has gripped this community for far too long. It’s no secret that piece of real estate has been a divisive one ever since George Spetifore decided to diversify the family business four decades ago. In the ensuing years, there have been many in the community that have lobbied strongly to ensure every last acre is preserved as farmland while a variety of development proposals have threatened to cover all or most of the site with housing and other structures. The Century Group application given final approval by municipal hall earlier this year strikes a balance between those two schools of thought by using roughly 20 per cent of the property for housing and turning the remainder over to Delta, much of it to be used for farming. If the agreement between Delta and Century didn’t include the development company putting up $9 million to improve drainage and irrigation, the move to put the land back in the ALR would be largely symbolic. There are varying opinions, to be sure, about the viability of the land when it comes to farming on a larger scale, but without that infusion of cash, I’m not so sure the property would be as productive as desired, regardless of it being in public hands or safely ensconced in the ALR. If you were planning a town from scratch, I’m doubtful you’d stick a farm where the Southlands is located, but given how this has played out over the years, it’s where we find ourselves today. It’s a curious situation, but the agreement Delta has reached with Century has made the most of it. With that said, the farming component on the Southlands has the ability to become an integral part of not only the development, but the community as a whole. If it comes off as planned, and everyone seems to be on board, it has the capability of bringing suburbanites a little closer to the food we consume. And the pending ALR designation will ensure it stays that way in perpetuity.

Farm Roots program quickly taking root in Boundary Bay

I

t was an action packed and full Annacis room at municipal hall for the agricultural advisory committee meeting this past Wednesday. There are many issues for this committee to deal with in the complicated world of farming and land use. For my part, I was to provide an update on the Farm Roots program operating out of the former Boundary Beach Elementary. Two months into the first cohort and it would seem that the program is thriving. I had a chance to interview several of the 23 Grade 10 to 12 students involved and you could tell right away they are having a blast and learning a lot. The common theme was that it has been great working outside and in teams. The young farmers have accomplished much in these early days. They have tilled and are preparing an initial half-acre for spring planting and have designed and built raised garden beds for over-wintering crops. They are learning about crop choices and many other aspects of farming. This is not normal school. It is not one hour in math, one in French and other hourly classes. They do that every second day back at the high school. But here, at Farm Roots on every second day, they are spending the whole day together working as a team to

tackle some real world problems. Educators Graham Harkley and Tammy Veltkemp are forging ahead and dealing with some administrative challenges but are extremely happy and grateful for the sense of family that is quickly evolving at the school. Agricultural advisory committee chair, councillor, farmer and South Delta Liberal candidate Ian Paton is very supportive of the initiative and will be assisting me to gather local farmers and industry stakeholders to speak to the kids about farming and the food system during the rest of the year. He will also be helping to solve some field work issues at the site through his vast network of friends and associates. The future looks bright for students interested in food and farming here in Delta. On Wednesday afternoon, Brad Semke the project manager for the Southlands,

took me on a guided tour of the quickly developing footprint for this major development. The community farm component of the Market Square on the Southlands adjoins the Farm Roots property and is separated by a hedgerow and an irrigation ditch. Century has offered Project Pickle a couple of acres to enhance and expand its educational programming and has further offered to build a bridge so the Farm Roots property can seamlessly integrate with our presence in the Market Square area. Farm Roots has a vision to create an orchard at the south of the property where the Corporation of Delta has a dog walk area. Additionally, Century Group will be building two other orchards and has offered management of these crops to the Delta School District, Farm Roots and Project Pickle. The vision is playing out. A community where agriculture and horticulture are woven into the neighbourhood fabric through partnership and collaboration. The educational programming available to our kids is second to none and the opportunities are endless. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Bridge foundations can’t find solid ground

Editor: Re: Tunnel safety called out, Nov. 9 So the George Massey Tunnel is an accident black spot and difficult to get to when an accident happens. Everyone knows what happens when there is an accident on the Lions Gate and/or Second Narrows bridges. OK, a fire is more dangerous in a tunnel than on a bridge — unless the fire damages the bridge structure. And, sadly, high bridges seem to be more of a focus for actual or threatened suicides than

tunnels. You can argue that kind of safety back and forth. There’s a bigger safety concern than that. In 2013, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure contracted two geotechnical investigation boreholes, BH 13-01 and BH 13-02, on the north and south shores of the Fraser River, respectively, at the site of the proposed towers for a cable-stayed bridge. The resulting geotechnical data report (Golder Associates, April 24, 2014) records these holes went

to 335 metres (1,099 feet) depth in sand and silt — more than twice the height of the towers of the Alex Fraser Bridge — without tagging bedrock. A 1995 Geological Survey of Canada paper (Britten, Harris, Hunter, Luternauer, The bedrock surface beneath the Fraser River delta in British Columbia based on seismic measurements, Figure 8.) estimates the depth to bedrock at the bridge site at 600 to 700 metres (1,970 to 2,300 feet). So the towers are going to be built on 2,000 feet of waterlogged

sand and mud in an area assessed at moderate to high risk of liquefaction in the event of an earthquake (Geomap Vancouver). It would be interesting to know: Can the towers be built in that location at all, or at reasonable cost? How? Have cable-stayed bridges been built on these foundation conditions before? Where? What happens in a major earthquake? Considering the foundation material, how much movement of the towers, due to settlement or earthquakes, can happen before the bridge

Great service

Editor: The Remembrance Day service this year was truly amazing. I enjoyed the speakers who were to the point. I enjoyed the many young families with children and the two-minute silence was truly silent. The geese flying over in a V formation added to the ceremony. And never forget the airplanes. My eyes teared up. So much respect was shown by everyone who attended this service. It was well said that those that died and gave up their today gave us our tomorrow. It touched my heart. Thank you to everyone who attended and remembered this day, which was a fulfilling tribute to our veterans and the present day soldiers who are protecting us. I am a very proud, humble and grateful Canadian. I would also like to thank whoever improved the sound system. It was the best it has been in years. Sharon Kraemer

breaks or becomes unsafe? The ministry has refused to answer this question. The alternative is to keep the existing tunnel and build a second tunnel on easily sampled and well understood foundation material, using long-proven technology. It would also be interesting to know the relative costs of these two alternatives and, in particular, how much taxpayer money has to be built into the bridge design to deal with poorly known foundation conditions. Province rolling the dice with poor lighting in tunnel

Editor: The lack of maintenance in the George Massey Tunnel is not the only problem engineered by the B.C. Liberals in order to push people into accepting their monster, ego-stroking mega-project. The most dangerous one is the quality of the lighting in the tunnel.

Once in a blue moon all the lights are on and actually working. Most of the time only some are; often only half of them and too often only a very small fraction. I’ve even come through one morning and found they were all off, a heartstopping (literally) experience, as it was bright

sunlight outside and the sudden complete darkness was totally disorienting, not something you want at a time when you never know what bizarre manoeuvre the next driver around you will be attempting. An earlier letter complained that drivers should have full headlights on in

the tunnel, but this should not be necessary if the darn thing were properly lit. I’ve driven through many tunnels in many countries and this must be the dingiest of all. One in Rotterdam dates back pre-Second World War, but was faced with shiny white tiles that

reflected the plentiful lighting perfectly. I don’t know whether this is an attempt to save up for the massive cost of the bridge and other prestige mega-projects on the part of our provincial leader, but it is rolling the dice with people’s lives and that is unconscionable. Ellen Pye

MLA’s Report

VICKI HUNTINGTON

People in South Delta are by now all too familiar with the commercial and industrial development that is encroaching on our community. It has become a fact of life and is unfortunately putting extraordinary pressure not only on agriculture, but also on environmentally sensitive areas. The Port of Vancouver’s Terminal 2 project (T2), at Deltaport, represents yet another chapter in this ongoing saga. Recently, my office submitted 35 pages of comments on the port’s Terminal 2 proposal to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) as part of the latest stage of environmental review. Essentially, the federal government is determining whether the thousands of pages of information and analysis, provided by the port, are “sufficient.” There are many significant shortcomings in the port’s submission, but one critical gap is the lack of any review of T2’s effects on agricultural land. Terminal 2 is inextricably

linked to future development of agricultural lands, and pretending otherwise is ignoring reality. The port says 2,500 acres of industrial land need to be developed to meet trade growth demands in the region, and a recent study for the port concluded T2 will increase demand for industrial land by up to 30 per cent. We know, too, that the port has significant agricultural holdings in Richmond, and that there are $50 million of active options to purchase ALR land in Delta: the industrial developer’s explicit intent is to build a truck

There are many significant shortcomings in the port’s submission... and rail intermodal yard. On top of this, BC Rail owns 159 acres of ALR land along Deltaport Way as part of its mandate to “acquire and hold railway corridor and strategic port lands.” So while the port is now saying — despite previous comments to the contrary — that new industrial land will not have to come at the expense of farmland, it is impossible to see any alternative. It is my strongly held opinion there must be an agricultural impact assessment of T2. Perhaps the most important revelations of all

are found in Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) extensive submission to CEAA. It warns that T2 could have significant “species-level consequences” on migratory birds such as the Western sandpiper, and that “there is insufficient, science-based information to support [the port’s] finding that [T2] would not negatively impact migratory shorebirds.” The department found “substantive issues, omissions, and uncertainties” in the port’s environmental impact statement. The ECCC observes that Roberts Bank is critically important habitat for migratory shorebirds that feed off the biofilm deposited over the mudflats. The rich mass of diatoms on the Fraser delta is essential fuel for their long journey from South America to Alaska. The conditions at Roberts Bank are unique, and if the biofilm is compromised, there are no equivalent habitats along the Fraser River estuary to support these great migrations. And to that end, ECCC warns that T2 will bring “changes in biofilm, which would likely be immediate and irreversible.” That warning should give us all pause to consider what this project really represents to our community and to the world. To me it is clear: T2 puts too much at risk and should not go forward.

Taking care of people that take care of us Police dep’t looks after officers’ mental health

DPD Strong

CHIEF NEIL DUBORD

When I swear in new recruits, I think about what their careers have in store for them. I know they are going to experience some incredible things, but I am also very alive to the fact these young men and women will respond to some terrible and tragic events. They will be called upon to investigate fatal motor vehicle accidents, sudden deaths, domestic assaults and many other files that can, and will, leave an impression on their minds. Society’s front line, whether it is overseas peacekeeping, combat deployment, or our police, fire and medics here at home, protect our way of life, and we have a duty to care for them both during their careers and after they have served. Only in recent years has the issue of police officer mental wellness moved to forefront of thought in police leadership. We are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of both single-incident trauma as well as the cumulative trauma of witnessing scenes throughout the course of a career. The Delta Police Department is working to counteract these negative experiences by developing a strategy to assist officers with maintaining a state of mental wellness. A key initiative is the

Road to Mental Readiness (R2MR), which was developed by Canada’s Department of National Defence in order to create mental resiliency in our soldiers. It has been modified with the expertise of the Mental Health Commission of Canada for police forces. We have trained a cadre of Delta police officers who are now delivering the mandatory training to every police officer and staff in our organization. This training is also occurring for all staff of the Delta Fire Department, and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough is supporting Delta at the federal level on establishing a framework for supporting mental wellness for first responders and front line emergency workers across Canada. While front line training and advocacy for change at all levels of government is important, sharing personal stories is perhaps the most impactful when it comes to understanding operational stress injuries and its effect on our first responders. One Delta police officer shares his experience with his colleagues and friends in an effort to continue his personal journey of healing as well as inspire others to get past the stigma that some connect to mental health issues. In his words, “I can be dumped into the middle of a riot or deal with an ERT call, but having to do a death notification, that has the greatest impact on my mental health. Delivering news to a family that their loved one has just died, and watching the sharp and intense grief take hold, it’s hard not to have an emotional reaction to it. For many years, I didn’t recognize the impact.

up to 50% OFF

“Emotional stress from this job took its toll on me. I knew I needed help. When I disclosed that I was struggling with my own mental health issues, I was supported by all levels of the organization. I fought past the stigma and while I know that it is a work in progress, I felt empowered and in control. “It is my hope that others who are suffering know they too will get support from their colleagues, their friends and family, and from the Delta Police Department. “Policing brings with it highly stressful and emotionally traumatic situations and caring for our psychological health — from day one — is the first step in maintaining our emotional wellness.” There is no single or quick fix to officer mental wellness. In fact, it takes a constant and dedicated effort to maintain mental wellness while working as a first responder. So in addition to R2MR training, we encourage healthy lifestyle choices — fitness, good diet, proper sleep, a focus on the family — which all play a part in a healthy mind, body and spirit. I am incredibly proud of the men and women of the Delta Police Department that serve the citizens of Delta; they have chosen one of the most challenging, yet rewarding careers. And it is with this pride that I commit to using all the tools at our disposal to create a resilient organization and keep #DPDStrong. • If you want to learn more about the Road to Mental Readiness, visit the Mental Health Commission of Canada website at: mentalhealtcommission.ca.

At a time when we are inundated with shocking, despairing, unsubstantiated rhetoric about the state of affairs surrounding us, and we witness the spillover into the physical, emotional and psychological violence of bashing the “other,” it’s time to step back. This rhetoric and the visceral reaction it engenders can all too easily become infectious. It seems to me this is when we need to be reminded of the people, organizations and approaches that inspire us into hope, faith and trust. I just received “A letter from Jean.” Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche, and one of those rich inspirations for me, writes a letter throughout the world-

wide network of L’Arche Communities three or four times a year. In his November 2016 letter, Jean tells of the beautiful moments of his life over the past months, reflects on events where

diverse people come together to learn and grow, and names people who cross unimaginable cultural, religious, economic and social barriers to allow friendship to take root. Jean leaves us with the following point of reflection. “The important thing is to meet each other, and thence to discover that each person is a human being with a heart, with a family, children, suffering and difficulties… The world can only move towards peace if we recognize that every human being is my brother or my sister. Let’s pray together and stay united in spite of the many upheavals in our world.” Who and what will we allow to inspire you?

DYT brings Elf to the stage Delta Youth Theatre staging Elf Jr. the Musical at Metro Theatre next week DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta Youth Theatre’s latest production has catchy songs and a festive premise. Elf Jr. the Musical is one of those shows “where you go away singing,” says director Tracy Neff. “The songs are fantastic.” The musical, which will run next week at Metro Theatre in Vancouver, is based on the 2003 comedy film starring Will Ferrell as Buddy the elf and includes no shortage of comedic elements. But there are also moments that might bring people to tears “in a good, holiday, Christmas kind of way,” says Neff. Rehearsals at Ladner United Church have been coming along well, Neff says, noting the preparations are fast paced. Nearly 50 youth are part of the production with some of the principal cast members playing other roles on their off-nights. The production is unique in the sense that it’s not well-known as a musical but it’s based on a popular movie. “It’s based on the movie

Members of Delta Youth Theatre rehearse at Ladner United Church in preparation for next Wednesday’s opening. Elf that everybody loves and knows, so it’s got a little bit of a familiarity … people will recognize,” says Neff. Delta Youth Theatre made its debut earlier this

year with Into the Woods, a musical that featured characters like Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood in a re-telling of classic fairy tales. The group’s pre-pro-

fessional youth theatre program is designed for an ensemble of dedicated students who want to learn from professionals and to have fun in a focused and safe environment.

Elf Jr. the Musical runs Wednesday, Nov. 23 to Sunday, Nov. 27 at the Metro Theatre, 1370 SW Marine Dr., Vancouver. Visit www.deltayouththeatre.com for tickets.

Ladner stop for social justice theatre troupe Theatre of the Beat at Cedar Park next Saturday to present Forgiven/Forgotten Founded in 2011, Theatre of the Beat has quickly gained a reputation as a social justice theatre troupe that refuses to shy away from tackling the tough topics. Forgiven/Forgotten is no exception, addressing issues of crime, reintegration and our responses to those affected by these themes most, making it the perfect way to celebrate Restorative Justice Week, Nov. 20 to 27. Written by Johnny Wideman, Forgiven/ Forgotten follows the varying responses of a community that learns an exoffender will be serving his parole in their midst. This emotionally driven piece will be touring throughout B.C. from Nov. 18 to 28, finalizing a cross-country tour that began in 2013.

Theatre of the Beat’s production of Forgiven/Forgotten looks at a community that learns an ex-offender will be serving his parole in their midst. The show will be staged at Cedar Park Church in Ladner on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. The 50-minute performance will be followed by a halfhour talk back session. Admission is by donation.

To date, the show has been performed in theatres, universities, high schools, churches, community centres as well as federal and provincial prisons. Regardless of the audience, the shows

have been met with an overwhelmingly positive response, inspiring great discussion in the facilitated talk backs that follow each performance. “Theatre is a great way to spark dialogue,” says

Wideman, who also directs the play. “The characters we portray put a face to the offender and give voice to the victim. You begin to see the complexities of the issue; you see them as people.”

Paddling back in time to Maui fishpond KAROLINE CULLEN

Optimist contributor

“Huli!” The command to switch sides is quickly followed by “Imua, imua!” “Go, go!” I change my paddle from left to right, thankfully not dropping it in the process, and lean into a furious stroke. The call “Hoe h?pi!” or “Paddles up!” brings welcome relief to burning shoulder muscles. The outrigger catches the crest of the wave, speeds up, and we’re rapidly surfing towards the shore. I am one of six paddlers in an outrigger canoe off the shore of Kihei, Maui. The waters are calm, sea turtles swim around the canoe, and we stop for a short lomi lomi massage break on shore. Not only are we getting our morning exercise paddling, we are learning about the cultural traditions of the once royal Ko’ie’ie Fishpond. Our guide Vene is the Fishpond protector or guardian. Who better to teach us about the ways of the ancients?

The outrigger canoe gets near the fishpond walls for a better view. After gleefully catching the wave for our short canoe surf, he carefully navigates the canoe through an opening in the lava rock wall of the pond. As he does so, he explains how fishponds work. Walls of stones and boulders are built higher than the highest tide and an opening in the walls is fitted with a wooden sluice gate with vertical spaces between the slats. Small fish pass into the pond through the openings and feed on the algae and seaweed. Once fish grow larger than the

spaces between the slats, they cannot escape. Pond stocks can then be carefully maintained and harvested for both sustenance and ceremonial purposes. The pond is about 500 years old. Legend tells of it being built by Menehune, Hawaii’s mythical people of extraordinary powers. In reality, over 10,000 people worked on its last reconstruction. Chiefs were considered wealthy if they had many loko i’a or fishponds in their jurisdiction. Some, like this one, were reserved strictly for ali’i or royal use.

When Captain Cook came to Hawaii in the late 1700s, there were more than 350 fishponds, feeding thousands. By 1900, there were less than 100, and at the start of the 21st century, there were less than four. In Cook’s time, there were about one million Hawaiians and they were self-sustaining. The land was divided from the highlands to the sea according to a system called ahupua’a. Every inhabitant was assured access to water, food, building materials and natural

medicines. Today there are about 1.4 million Hawaiians and they import 90 per cent of what they need. Vene sadly shakes his head at this decline in self-sustenance. The fishpond restoration project was started by Vene’s uncle who wants to reintroduce some of that long lost ancient culture and wisdom. He convinced Vene to join his pursuit even though the way to achieving that goal and how it would be funded was not always clear. Initially, grant money

was scarce. Now the project has gained momentum and the roster of volunteers and funding sources has grown. Interrupting his tale, Vene sloshes over to a volunteer who comes from New York annually to work on the fishpond. Together they barely manage lifting a metre-diameter lava rock into place. On community work days, many muscles strain as massive boulders are passed hand to hand. Smaller rocks fill the gaps and stabilize the construction. Vene reverently claims that every stone carries the power of the ancestors, which may explain why many are drawn to work on the walls. The pond covers about three acres and is almost two metres deep in spots. There is a lot of wall yet to build. Fitness shouldn’t be a goal, but a way of life

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Have you ever wondered what an athlete does to stay motivated? Take an elite runner, for example. They must get tired of all that running. Fast-tempo, Fartleks, track work, steady-state. It’s just run, run, run. That’s gotta get a little tedious after a while, you would think. Yet it doesn’t for them. They keep going, they keep pushing and they keep striving. What sets these individuals apart from the rest of us? The fit, and those who stay fit, are that way because fitness is a habit. It’s not a means to an end (like losing a few pounds is for a lot people who start working out). It truly is a lifestyle. It’s so ingrained into their DNA that asking them to quit is the same as asking someone on the street to stop breathing. They would look at you weird, give you a wide berth as they passed and perhaps even take a picture of you to show their friends the loony they met on the street today. So what can us mere mortals learn from our fitter brethren? Well, there are some take-aways that I know fit people do not do.

First, fit people do not cruise parking lots. You will never find a fit person driving around the parking lot at the grocery store trying to find a spot closer to the front door. Actually, I could go even a step further and say that most fit people wouldn’t even be in a car to begin with. They’d be walking, bag in hand, to the store, smile on their face. Why? Because they love to move their body. They truly aren’t thinking about Health Canada’s recommendations that we should be getting 2.5 hours of activity a week. They aren’t thinking about all the awesome health benefits their walks will provide them (like preventing chronic diseases, prolonging their independence, decreasing their stress and improving their quality of life). They are, quite simply, enjoying the act of moving their bodies. What I also think is important to note — fit people do not count their walks as exercise. A walk is simply a mode of transportation for them, or a chance to get some fresh air, or an opportunity to walk the dog. Their “exercise” will take place later when they do their actual workout. Second, fit people do not use food as a reward system. People who are fit enjoy eating clean, but they aren’t martyrs either. They, too, can enjoy pizza and chocolate cake. But, what they won’t do is reward their “good behaviour” through the week with a binge night at the buffet table, or pub nights on the weekend.

There is no negative self-talk with food. Food, to fit people, is there to fuel their body — and good, wholesome food does just that. That in itself is the reward. Third, fit people do not have excuses. Give a fit person a busy week and she, or he, will still find the time to: 1) prep their meals; 2) eat healthy; 3) get their workouts in; and 4) get enough sleep. There will be no excuses or whining about why they can’t and why they aren’t. This is not because they are super human. It is simply because these habits are ingrained into their routines. As I mentioned earlier, their goals and their desires trump their excuses. If you want to create new healthy habits, experts recommend you start with one and grow from there. On average it takes 66 days to cement a new habit into our grey matter, and it’s these habits that we now know are the true bits and pieces behind losing weight and getting fit. Not willpower, or selfcontrol, it’s habits. It’s making these new activities become second nature to us so that when life does throw us a curveball, like packed schedules, it doesn’t phase us. Our workout is just as much a part of our life as turning out the lights. Learned and now instinctive. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer who encourages you to start getting fitter. You can find her and her award-winning group classes at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

LadnerboysleadsoaringHawks Linemates Mark Trotman & Jordan Bogress carrying scoring load for surprising Delta MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

The soaring Delta Ice Hawks are the hottest team in the Pacific Junior Hockey League and it’s a couple of Ladner boys doing much of the damage. The Ice Hawks (14-6-0) made it seven straight wins with a 4-2 triumph over the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Tuesday in a showdown of respective conference leaders. It was a rare night that saw Mark Trotman and Jordan Bogress held off the scoresheet. The South Delta Minor Hockey products and linemates have been on an tear — combining for 27 goals. Trotman, 20, actually started the season on the blueline and his spent much of his career in a platoon role, using his 6-foot-4 230-pound frame all over the ice. His 15 goals ranks second in the league to Abbotsford’s Mateo Toledo (16) and is already well past his previous best campaign of nine. Bogress, 17, is the PJHL’s leading candidate for rookie-of-the-year. He is 10th in league scoring with 22 points, including 12 goals. No one predicted this kind of production, even Ice Hawks head coach Darren Naylor, who put the pair together on a line with promising centre Jonathan Stein. “Trotman is having the time of his life,” smiled Naylor. “Basically it’s such a young team and he and (Cam) Cuthbert, along with a couple of others, are like the big brothers in the group. The reason I wanted him on the line was to open things up off the cycle for Stein. He started scoring and hasn’t stopped since.” Bogress arrived at the

Ice Hawks training camp in August coming off a couple seasons with South Delta’s top midget team. His roster spot was by no means a certainty. “I have a scouting background and I look for kids with skating (ability). Bogress is not the nicest skater in the world but I also keep track of goals too,” recalled Naylor. “In training camp scrimmages it was like two or three goals for him every time. I thought, okay, we will keep him through to the next stage and it was still two to three goals. He just hasn’t stopped. “He has very good offensive instincts and his skating style actually suits him because he is able to protect the puck and he opens his hips. He has been well-coached in minor hockey.” Trotman and Bogress were never teammates in minor hockey due to their age difference but it’s hard to tell. Throw in Stein’s playmaking ability — he has 12 assists — and there is terrific chemistry between the trio. “Bogey loves to go down to the gritty areas and look for the open pass and I’m always up high looking for one-timers or a shot,” explained Trotman. “(Stein) brings a lot of skill with some good hands and speed. He is another guy trying to make a point so he has a lot of grit as well.” Trotman is still getting used to his reputation as a sniper. He has never been a goal scorer his entire career in hockey. “I have always been the big guy,” he laughed. “Definitely being my fourth year (in the league) has helped. You just notice more things and where to go. You get that game sense because you have done it so much more since you were 16.”

Mark Trotman (left) and Jordan Bogress are playing a big part in the Delta Ice Hawks successful season to date. The Ladner natives and linemates have combined for 27 goals. Bogress’ goal-scoring ability didn’t take flight until his second season with the Midget Storm. It was enough to be affiliated with the Ice Hawks but he didn’t get a chance to play for them. “I was always the set up guy until last year with South Delta when I turned into more of a goal scorer,” said the 6-foot-2 Delta Secondary Grade 12 student, who needed extensive dental work after taking a puck to the mouth in last Saturday’s win in Port Moody. “I got some good bounces in training camp and it has just kept going from there.”

Trotman finally got a chance to taste some playoff success last season when the Hawks upset defending champion North Vancouver in the opening round. Now, he is looking to conclude his junior career with his hometown team being a legitimate championship contender. “Darren knew a lot of these (young) guys and they are skilled,” he added. “You could tell at the beginning of the year there was a little bit of nerves and shyness coming into the league. But after five or 10 games you could see the pace pick up as they

started to know how the games go. “There is still lots of spots we can pick up our game but the chemistry is there. We are playing really good hockey right now.” Icing.. The Ice Hawks are in the midst of their toughest stretch of the season — playing the four teams right with them in the overall standings. They travel to Abbotsford Friday to take on the Pilots (137-0), then visit Grandview Sunday to face the 12-4-4 Steelers. On Tuesday, the surging Richmond Sockeyes (10-6-1) visit Ladner at 7:35 p.m. Best wishes:

Sun Devil grads help Dinos move closer to Vanier Cup

Tim Jardine Showcase

South Delta Storm skated to a 6-0 victory over Wenatchee in Midget AAA Division action at the 23rd annual Tim Jardine Showcase Tournament. The Storm went unbeaten in round-robin play before dropping a 5-2 decision to Vancouver Minor in the quarter-finals. Vancouver Thunderbirds edged Seafair 2-1 in the final. Victoria took Bantam Division honours with a 3-2 win over Chilliwack. South Delta went 1-2 in round-robin play before bowing out in a 5-0 loss to Prince George.

University of Calgary will have distinct South Delta Sun Devils flavor in their lineup when they entertain the Atlantic University Sport St. Francis Xavier X-Men Saturday afternoon at McMahon Stadium. SDSS 2015 graduates Jack McDonald and Blake Gau will dress for the Hardy Cup champion Dinos with the winner heading to Hamilton to play in the Vanier Cup for Canadian Interuniversity Sport football supremacy. A third Sun Devil, linebacker Charlie Moore, is a promising redshirt freshman. Both players helped the Dinos in their epic 46-43 triumph over the defending Vanier Cup champion UBC Thunderbirds last weekend. McDonald, saw extensive action on offense from his slotback position and also on special teams. Gau, a linebacker, saw action on a variety of specials. McDonald missed three regular season games due to injury but managed five receptions for 99 yards, while Gau dressed for six regular season games. Both are expected to participate in the Mitchell Bowl. “Coming to Calgary was a perfect cocktail for me. I have family here, and the program with the Dinos speaks for itself,” stated Gau, who is in his second year of business studies, about making the decision to come to the Dinos. McDonald was elated that his father,

Bruce, a member of the 1986 UBC national championship team was able to be present for the Hardy Cup triumph over the Thunderbirds. “It was special to have him here. He coached me throughout my career and he was part of each big win for me and again he was here this one,” stated 6’1”, 210 pounder, who is also a business major. For the 18-year-old Moore the atmosphere of being on the sidelines in the Canada West Final was exciting. “I still have close friends on that team (UBC) but I am here now. The energy and excitement that was present was great to be a part of,” Moore stated. Calgary Head Coach Wayne Harris has high praise for the trio of Sun Devil players. “They are great young men to work with that work extremely hard. I’m delighted that they are with our program,” he stated. End zone… Despite the loss, it was a big afternoon for a couple of SDSS grads with UBC. Riley Jones helped the Thunderbirds mount a second half comeback with an interception returned 53-yards for the major score. It was the fifth-year linebacker’s final university game. Third-year receiver David Mann was quarterback Michael O’Connor’s favourite target, making nine catches for 160yards.

Hawaiian Beach 13th Annual

Tree festival kicks off festive season

T

he Christmas season kicks off with a holiday tradition in Ladner Village with the fourth annual Christmas Tree Festival. This fun, family event, presented by the Ladner Business Association, runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24 at the corner of 48th Avenue and Delta Street. This year’s event promises lots of fun for everyone

and is the perfect way to get in the Christmas spirit and share in the joy of the season with the whole community. “The idea is to bring people together to celebrate,” said Jill McKnight, one of the event organizers. “The festival is about family traditions and bringing the community together to kick off the Christmas season.” Port Metro Vancouver is back this year as a presenting sponsor and will have a booth set up with information and children’s activities. Throughout the event area various tents will be set up offering something different. One of the highlights, said McKnight, is the gingerbread cookie decorating. Kids can come by and get cookies that are ready for decorating. There is

also a gingerbread house contest in which the public will choose the winner. “Various businesses have been working very hard to come up with some great looking gingerbread houses,” said McKnight. “This has become a highlight event and a bit of a fun rivalry between the businesses — but all in good spirit.” The winner of the contest will be chosen that night based on the highest number of votes from the public. Another contest is the children’s colouring contest for children 12 and under. There will be prizes for each age category as well as two grand prizes. There will also be a children’s craft station and a Christmas tattoo station. Letters to Santa can be dropped off in the special mailbox set up just for the festival and children can also pen their letters to Santa that night. All letters will be sent

directly to Santa at the North Pole. Featured entertainment on stage is the GoBy Catt Trio and there will be free hot chocolate courtesy of MLA Vicki Huntington and her staff, while hot dogs will be for sale all grilled up by the LBA merchants. The festival will end with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree at 7:15 p.m. with Santa’s arrival just minutes before. McKnight said the tree is a little smaller this year, but the idea is as your children grow, so will the tree. “This will be a cool thing when people come back year after year and see the tree grow and create some memories,” said McKnight. “With the Light up Ladner campaign going as well, the lights will help create an even more memorable atmosphere. We are all really excited to welcome the community to this year’s festival.”

On October 31, 2016 Pete Wideski Senior was reunited with the love of his wife Vi. He will be sadly missed by his loving family; son Peter (Kimberly), son Lance, daughter Cindy (John Schuss), grandchildren Tyler, Samantha, Brianna, Parker, Quinten and faithful pet Rocky. He will also be missed by brothers Joe, Tony, Albert and sisters Helen and Vicky. He was predeceased by brother Eddy. Peter was a fisherman his whole working life spending many years on the water. Pete also loved the outdoors and when he could he would go hunting. In his later years he enjoyed volunteering at the thrift store. He always liked to help others and he was a very giving person with a big heart. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him. We would like to thank all the special people at Mountain View Manor for the kind and loving care that dad received from them. A celebration of life will be held at the Fishermans Hall in Ladner on December 11, 2016 from 1 pm to 4 pm.
