Driver racks up 15 tickets, loses vehicle

Crash closes Trunk again Second serious collision in four days prompts mayor to review situation SANDOR GYARMATI & IAN JACQUES Ladner Trunk Road was closed to traffic for the second time in four days Wednesday due to yet another serious collision. Just before noon, Delta police responded to what appeared to be a head-on crash involving a van and a semi-truck. According to Delta police public relations coordinator Sharlene Brooks, the driver of the van, the lone occupant of the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and was in critical, but stable condition in hospital as of yesterday morning. Brooks said the driver of the semi-truck sustained minor injuries. Ladner Trunk Road was shut down between 80th and 96th streets for approximately seven hours as police investigated and debris and diesel leaking from the semi were cleaned up. Last Sunday, an off-duty

This semi-truck ended up at least 100 metres away from the van it collided with Wednesday. Surrey firefighter from Boundary Bay was killed further east on Ladner Trunk Road when his vehicle struck a parked semitruck. It was the fourth fatality on the road this year after a Richmond couple was killed in a singlevehicle crash in April and a Langley teen died in a collision with a dump truck in July. Mayor Lois Jackson said she
would be meeting with police Chief Neil Dubord and well as the engineering department to discuss the situation. “I just really think we’ve got to slow the traffic down and get people to pay more attention to what they’re doing. The engineering of the road has been like that forever, so it’s got to be human behaviour, I think,” she said.
“Maybe we should lower the speed, I don’t know. I certainly will be talking with the traffic section if they’ve got any recommendations as the result of both of these accidents. It’s very tragic.” Jackson said for whatever reason many motorists are using Ladner Trunk Road when they should be on Highway 99, noting it’s meant to be a local farm road. “It’s a narrow road, with ditches on both sides and that’s the way Ladner Trunk Road has been forever and I really hope we don’t change it, because that would mean the farmers would have a tougher time.” Brooks said Wednesday it is up to drivers to be attentive at the wheel. “While we try and affect behaviour of the drivers through enforcement and education, we don’t have control over the behaviour of drivers,” she said. DRIVERS: see Page 3
Instead of one traffic ticket, a young Delta driver recently racked up 15 of them, accumulating more than $2,000 in fines and losing his vehicle in the process. And it’s all because he failed to stop for police during a routine traffic stop. According to the RCMP, officers attempted to stop a dark-coloured Lexus for a possible mechanical violation last Thursday on the ramp leading to the Alex Fraser Bridge. The driver appeared initially to be stopping, but fled from police. Having obtained the licence plate, the officers did not pursue the vehicle for safety reasons. While preparing their report, officers noticed a vehicle similar in description, but with a different licence plate, had also fled from police at the same location only a few days earlier. Further investigation showed both licence plates came back to the same vehicle identification number and registered owner. After the first incident, the owner obtained new licence plates for the vehicle. Police confirmed the driver was in fact the registered owner, a 20-year-old man from Delta. “On both occasions police officers did not chase this individual. We didn’t want to put the public at risk, so we exercised discretion,” said Sgt. Lorne Lecker of Deas Island Traffic Services. “But that didn’t mean he got away — we have other ways to ensure these type of drivers will face consequences.” The day after the second incident, officers went to the owner’s home and impounded the car. His driver’s licence was also seized. The driver, who had a valid driver’s licence and insurance, would have been issued a $109 ticket had he stopped as required, added Lecker.

Missing Tsaw. man located Construction worker notifies police after he finds man in medical distress
A Tsawwassen man who had been missing for five days was located Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 2:30 p.m., Delta police responded to the 2300-
block of 52nd Street after a construction worker reported finding a man in medical distress near an abandoned house. “On arrival, police determined that it was
missing person Duane Hall,” said Delta police public relations coordinator Sharlene Brooks. Brooks said Hall was transported to hospital for medical attention and his
family was notified. “Delta police would like to extend our thanks to the general public and media for your assistance in this missing person investigation,” Brooks said.
Hall was last seen at 1 p.m. on Nov. 17 leaving his residence on 14th Avenue. He indicated to family when he left that he was going to Richmond for an appointment.

Construction workers were busy securing scaffolding and shrinkwrap that blew down at a construction project at Seafarer Marina Estates in Ladner overnight Wednesday. The high winds yesterday morning made it especially challenging for the workers to clean up and secure the damage.
Drivers must pay more attention to the road: police CONTINUED from Page 1 “We need people to take charge of their responsibility to drive attentively. I’m not saying that these recent accidents are as a result of distracted driving because we just don’t know, but barring any medical association that could have happened, people need to be attentive. Do what is within your power to
drive responsibly and slow down.” Despite the rash of serious accidents on Ladner Trunk Road, traffic volumes on the roadway have declined, according to the municipal engineering department. A study found the average daily volume in both directions between 80th and 88th streets was 12,894 vehicles in 2011,
while a count from 2014 saw that figure drop to 8,851. The stretch between 104th and 112th streets saw a drop from 13,177 vehicles in 2011 to 9,657 in 2014. Engineering director Steven Lan said those drops can be attributed to the opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. ICBC spokesperson Sam Corea, noting the insur-
ance corporation can’t comment on Wednesday’s incident or the road design, told the Optimist the road safety coordinator in Delta regularly meets with the municipality and police to look at crash data. Corea noted a number of factors could come into play in a crash. “It can be inattention, it can be speed, it can be
impaired driving, it can be distraction, it can be road conditions, it can be driving too fast for conditions and there could also be road design issues as well. That’s why there’s a comprehensive approach for safety,” he said. Corea noted ICBC has several awareness and enforcement campaigns to go along with engineering projects.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone says Delta’s report highlights one of the reasons the province is moving ahead with replacement of the George Massey Tunnel.

B.C.’s transportation minster is giving Delta kudos for pointing out safety concerns with the George Massey Tunnel. “I want to thank Delta fire and emergency Chief Dan Copeland, Delta Chief of police Neil Dubord and all Delta first responders for the work they do, day in and day out, as they deal with emergency situations at the George Massey Tunnel,” Todd Stone said in a statement last week. Delta council last week made public a report by staff that highlighted safety concerns with the tunnel. The report noted several issues first responders face, as well as the fact the

standards to increase safety for drivers and for communities along the route. This includes longer merge lanes, wider travel lanes, improved sightlines and increased vertical clearances at overpasses,” Stone said. The minster also recently shot down the suggestion of twinning the tunnel, saying a new tunnel would be more expensive than a bridge. It would also carry significantly more construction risks and would have a greater impact on the environment, private property, agricultural land and the Fraser River, he added. As far as the notion the bridge is being built to accommodate the port so bigger ships can ply the Fraser River, Stone reiterated there are no plans to dredge the river. Construction is to begin next year and the bridge is scheduled to open in 2022.

moving ahead with the replacement of the tunnel — the safety of the travelling public who use this crossing every day. The safety of motorists on our highways is my ministry’s number one priority, and it’s clear that a new bridge to replace the tunnel will improve safety for the 80,000 motorists who travel this corridor,” he said. Stone said estimates have collisions being reduced by more than 35 per cent with a bridge because of more space and better sightlines. And when there is a situation, better access will mean a quicker and safer response. “The new bridge will be built to modern seismic standards to provide a lifeline connection across the Fraser River, replacing the seismically vulnerable tunnel. As well, Highway 99 will be upgraded to modern engineering

tunnel has a significantly higher accident rate than the provincial average and that accidents tend to be more severe and result in more significant injuries and death than collisions on open roads. The report, which was sent to the other city councils in the region, also notes it’s not feasible to upgrade the 57-year-old tunnel to modern seismic standards. The province is moving forward with a plan to build a $3.5-billion bridge to replace the tunnel, a project that has garnered opposition from Metro Vancouver but has been endorsed by Delta. The 10-lane bridge would be safer for motorists, safer and more accessible for first responders, and safer in the event of an earthquake, Stone said. “Their recent report to council highlights one of the main reasons we’re

Province playing politics with tunnel Doug Massey says civic report on tube’s safety is all part of plan to curry favour for bridge SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Politics by the province is behind the latest report by Delta on the George Massey Tunnel, says Doug Massey. A vocal critic of the government’s 10-lane bridge to replace the tunnel, Massey, whose father George spearheaded the construction of the now 57-year-old tunnel, isn’t impressed with the recent report by the municipality highlighting safety concerns from a first responders’ perspective. “It’s all a plan in order to make it (tunnel) distasteful for the public and favourable towards a bridge,” said Massey. Transportation Minister Todd Stone last week commended the municipality for preparing the report that outlined a number of safety issues. Saying the new bridge is unnecessary and twinning the tunnel makes better sense, Massey contends the report is merely an attempt by the province to use Delta to try to jus-
tify the $3.5-billion mega project. “They’re playing a game of making the tunnel look bad. Of course it doesn’t have the safety features of a brand new tunnel but a lot of the accidents they’re talking about are not even in the tunnel, they’re on the approaches, and if they had proper warning signs well in advance to keep your headlights on, that would definitely help,” he said. Continuing to gather information, including a study he says concludes a tunnel is a better option than a long, high-level bridge, Massey said a number of measures could be taken to increase safety, including installing tiles to brighten the crossing’s interior as well as not allowing big trucks to enter during certain times. “Some of these immersed tunnels are 37 metres down and 12 miles long, so, come on, you don’t build these things if they’re not safe. Ours is less than a mile long,” said Massey. “There’s a lot of things

Doug Massey, whose father spearheaded construction of the George Massey Tunnel six decades ago, says the province is trying to make the tunnel look bad. they could be doing to make it safer, but they’re making it more difficult. It’s just a game and they’re playing with people’s lives by doing it,” he said. A TV news report last week noted the Ministry of Transportation denied requesting the information from Delta.
At the Nov. 7 Delta council meeting, when CAO George Harvie and fire Chief Dan Copeland made a presentation outlining the report, Harvie noted that a Delta delegation, including police Chief Neil Dubord, at this year’s Union of B.C. Municipalities conference
met with the premier’s chief of staff and Ministry of Transportation officials. Harvie said both chiefs felt the safety message hasn’t really been out there and that the Delta delegation was asked to provide information, hence the recommendations in the report.
Harvie added, “It is very, very dangerous in that tunnel.” In a subsequent letter to Steve Carr, the premier’s chief of staff, Mayor Lois Jackson wrote she was pleased to provide additional information, as requested, regarding the safety benefits of a bridge compared with the George Massey Tunnel. Asked by the Optimist to clarify what was requested, the ministry responded, “The ministry wasn’t aware that Delta was studying the safety of the tunnel, nor did the ministry ask Delta for a report or more information. However, the ministry appreciates the municipality highlighting safety issues at the tunnel, and thanks Delta responders and those from other jurisdictions for the work they do in dealing with emergency situations at the tunnel.” Massey said it’s all semantics and believes a member of government asked for the report, even if it wasn’t the minister of transportation.

hen senior governments look at Delta, I imagine they see a municipality with a relatively small population, at least Lower Mainland-wise, which is at the end of the road and has large neighbours that aren’t too far away. In other words, they don’t see the need to actually locate government services here because residents of our fair municipality can access them nearby. I understand the whole economy of scale thing and how government coffers aren’t bottomless, but there are times when this poor relation arrangement due to location wears thin. The effort to create a transition house in Delta is one of those times. A number of well-intentioned local agencies and groups have been working together to create a transition house for women and children dealing with domestic abuse given Delta is the largest community in the province without one. There’s clearly a need for such a facility here, but provincial operating funding required to make it a reality hasn’t been forthcoming despite prolonged negotiations with Victoria. It’s disappointing we hold the distinction of being the largest community without a transition house, but not terribly shocking given we’re also the largest community without a post-secondary institution. The lack of senior government services means we also have to leave town to renew a driver’s licence, get a passport or even dispute a traffic ticket, among other things. We can live with having to travel to Richmond or elsewhere to access those once-in-a-while kind of services, viewing it as the price we must pay to live in one of the most desired places in the region, but there are other services that should be available closer to home. A transition house is one of them. There’s an arm of the provincial government called Service BC, which, according to the website, provides front line support for many of the hundreds of programs and services the province offers to residents, businesses and visitors. The website includes a Service Finder Map that allows British Columbians to find their nearest Service BC location. I clicked on the map and 70 icons appeared, dotting pretty much every area of the Lower Mainland --except one. Can you guess which place was left out?
Legion has been integral part of Ladner for nearly 90 years
H
ere’s a brief postscript to South Delta’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony held in Ladner’s Memorial Park. This was the 95th service following the unveiling of the cenotaph in 1921. We are fortunate to live in a generally peaceful part of the world and have much to be thankful for. We pay respect to soldiers who perished in battle and to our returning veterans. There is something inspirational about a parade comprised of aging veterans with their service medals, various groups, legion members, school children, fire and police personnel, led by Delta’s cadets and police pipe bands. Cadets stand on guard at the cenotaph securing the “gravesite” of 38 named Delta soldiers who gave their lives in two world wars. Plaques have been added recognizing Canada and Delta’s involvement in the Korean War, the Afghanistan conflict, and U.N. and NATO missions. The ceremony unfolds with remarks and prayers, the bugler’s haunting last post, followed by sombre silence, reawakened by the uplifting sound of reveille. The service is followed by the dramatic fly over of Harvard aircraft and the traditional laying of wreaths. A generation of young men

perished in the First World War. An estimated 150,000 Canadian and Allied soldiers died in the taking of Vimy Ridge, one of many high profile theaters of war in Europe. Cenotaphs were raised across Canada in recognition of the fallen sons whose remains never returned to Canadian soil for burial. We give thanks to those who keep the service alive, the three levels of government with military and various agencies. Fragmented organizations were unified by the formation of the Dominion Veterans Alliance. This led to the founding of the “Canadian Legion of the British Empire League” by act of Parliament in 1926. In time “Royal” was added, and on March 21, 1928, Ladner Branch 61 was formed. Originally located in the vacated King George High School (near the
current community centre), the Ladner Legion is now in the heart of Ladner Village. With an active membership of approximately 1,000, including 18 Second World War veterans, it is led by president Al Ridgeway, past president Jim Ingram and a ninemember board. The day-to-day operation is managed by the popular and hands-on Jacky Hillairet. Well-known Gordon Huff is the longest serving veteran member, approaching some 70 years. The legion annually achieves its fundraising goal of $70,000. These funds are donated to local organizations from kids to seniors, hospital and hospice services and veterans groups, to name but a few that benefit from their charitable efforts. The legion’s public profile is linked to November poppy sales and its leadership role in organizing the parade and formal service led this year by veteran member Ian Estabrooks, supported by Rev. Graham Witcher along with the Delta Community Choir led by Danielle Hamilton. They were heard by thousands thanks to Delta’s improved sound system. The landscape around the cenotaph has never looked better. And a good night to you, Ian and Jacky. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

MP needs to speak up for her constituents
Editor: Would the real Carla Qualtrough please stand up. Recently rookie Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam MP Ron McKinnon sent a letter to Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr stating that the Kinder Morgan pipeline is “detrimental to British Columbia and should not proceed.” It is good to hear that several MPs from B.C. have spoken up for their constituents. When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected he vowed to “be the prime minister for all Canadians.” In his victory speech, he went on to say, “We beat negative, divisive politics with a positive vision that brings Canadians together.” Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case for all the Liberal Party endeavors. Here in Delta, there is a struggle to preserve the Fraser River and estuary as well as our agricultural land base. All are under
threat from the federal Crown Corporation of the Port of Vancouver. Inaction from the federal Liberals is dividing our community. Ottawa has been mum on the issues of port expansion. It has left it to Victoria to take responsibility for removal of the George Massey Tunnel. The provincial proposal to build a 10-lane bridge quietly hides this defining reason for the tunnel removal. Victoria has added to the spin by declaring it’s not proposing to dredge the Fraser. This has also been claimed by port CEO Robin Silvester. Through FOI requests we know this is just not true. It is the only reason to remove the tunnel, which is the limiting factor to deeper dredging. Port expansion plans have already put enormous strain on farmland in Richmond and Delta. Speculation is raising the cost of farmland immense-
ly. Environmental concerns over Terminal 2 expansion have only now rippled the waters. Environment Canada has finally spoken up on the issue of biofilm. This issue has been on the forefront of respected professionals opposed to the expansion for years. Qualtrough expressed concerns over these issues during the election. Since her election victory, she has been mum about port expansion. Her only comment on the tunnel removal is concern over traffic problems. This hardly seems reasonable. Most of the tunnel traffic neither originates nor ends in her constituency. Yes, we need an improved crossing for the Fraser. Let the plans for that crossing be driven by regional planners and not by Port of Vancouver needs. Would our MP please speak up for her constituents like some of her counterparts. Grateful Earthwise Society not being treated appropriately
Editor: Re: Earthwise has itself to blame for current situation, letter to the editor, Nov. 16 Bob Bracken gets confused trying to assign “blame” for the current difficulties the Earthwise Society is facing as the Southlands development gets underway. Bracken advises that arguments endeavouring to support Earthwise in what has become a disagreement between Earthwise, Century Group and the Corporation of Delta are “disingenuous.” I would suggest, differently, that if any argument is fallacious, it is Bracken’s. Bracken talks about difficulties that Earthwise was facing when he accepted a position on the
board. I, along with other capable people, sat on the board for several years before Bracken appeared on the scene but left before he arrived. Bracken paints a picture when he showed up of doom and gloom. That is — and was — not the reality. Earthwise has never — including in the context of any current controversy — indicated anything but its gratitude to Sean Hodgins and Century Group for any generosity that Earthwise has benefitted from over the years. Earthwise is pointing out, however, something that Bracken seems to be ignorant of — that any generosity has not at all been a one-way street. I’ll leave it to others to delve into the specific nature of
the bilateral relationship that has existed between Earthwise and Century. I do believe, however, that both Century and the Corporation of Delta are treating Earthwise in the current and specific context inappropriately and in a manner that is threatening in several different ways to the viability of the society and its programs that benefit the community in several different and creative contexts. Bracken’s letter is ununiformed and selfish — and disrespectful of the many volunteers of the Earthwise Society. His letter was unnecessary and contributes nothing to a meaningful discussion of the issues currently facing this program. Firth Bateman
Tolling tunnel now would reduce traffic Editor: I have the solution to the George Massey Tunnel problem. Recently, while sitting in tunnel traffic, I was listening to a radio talk show discussion about the new bridge and one of the
points was that the resulting tolling will cause lots of regular commuters to begin using alternate, free routes such the Alex Fraser Bridge. Then it dawned on me, why not toll the tunnel now?
If you toll the tunnel now, the traffic patterns will change, which will reduce traffic through the tunnel, thus eliminating the need for a new bridge. It’s just crazy enough to work, don’t you think? Jim Rogers

Katie Domestic Long Hair, Brown Tabby with White, Spayed Female
Senior, (Approximately 10 years old)
This sweet, shy girl was surrendered to the shelter and is looking for a calm, consistent household where she can settle in without too much change or excitement. Katie lived with another cat (her sibling) and is used to being an indoor/outdoor cat. Katie was previously having some accidents outside of her litter box and it was determined that she had a urinary tract infection. We have switched her to a urinary diet and she hasn’t had any accidents here at the shelter. We feel that a low stress home with no other animals would be ideal for her. Katie is a shy wall flower but if given time and attention she really blooms. She loves to rub against your hand and receive chin rubs. We believe that once in a home, her true sweet personality will shine through. Katie loves to curl up on a lap and appreciates being brushed. She’ll even kneed and drool after a few minutes of attention! Do you have the retirement home Katie needs?

Editor: Metro Vancouver, and South Delta in particular, have an appallingly poor public transit system. Having recently returned from a visit to Geneva, Switzerland, I have a ready comparison between a transit system in Geneva that works and one in Metro Vancouver that does not. Geneva, a city much smaller than Vancouver, has a superb transit system with trams, buses and trains that cover both the city and the surrounding region seamlessly with frequent service that connects buses, trains and even lake steamers. Contrast that with TransLink that offers an
infrequent and inconvenient service to South Delta. Example: I travelled from downtown Vancouver by train to Bridgeport and then sat in the cold, windy bus area for 30 minutes waiting for a bus to South Delta. The Bridgeport transit hub appears to be designed to be as uncomfortable as possible. Not only that, but the TransLink schedule seems designed to provide the worst bus times. The 601 bus and the 620 both depart Bridgeport within minutes of each other. Any scheduler with a focus on customer service — obviously lacking at TransLink — would have scheduled the 601 and 620
Parks have leash provisions for a reason
Editor: I like dogs. I do not own one, but I like them. I walk in the park by Imperial Village every evening. Many times I come across dogs that are not leashed and this park is not an off-leash park. For the most part, their owners have them within reach. Recently I was walking in the park just after 5 p.m. (dark at this time of year) with my husband and an
aggressive Staffordshire terrier came out from the trees and started growling at us. My husband stood in front of me and held his walking stick in front of him. The dog growled and was lurching towards us. The owner came from around the bushes and began to verbally abuse us for asking him to leash his dog. He was yelling that, of course, he will growl because we had a walking stick. He said we made

him act aggressively. So it’s our fault? We did not stand behind the walking stick until that dog came from the bushes growling at us. It was dark, the dog startled us and with it being the breed it is, we were instantly concerned for our safety. Why did he just not have his dog on a leash? Why did he not put the dog on the leash when it showed aggression towards us? This is what a responsible person would have done.
For the first time in many years I did not feel safe in my own neighbourhood. Kids and the elderly walk through there many times a day and this could have gone very badly. Please leash your dogs. They may be friendly to you but they may not be to others they don’t know. There are four off-leash parks in Tsawwassen where you can let them run. Please keep them leashed in all other parks. Jo Gee

As teachers around the province celebrate a recent Supreme Court ruling bringing and end to a 14-year legal battle between the provincial government and the B.C. Teachers Federation, uncertainty remains as to how the decision will affect their classrooms. In a 7-2 ruling earlier this month, the Supreme Court restored clauses from the teachers’ contract around class size, the number of specialist teachers required in schools and the number of special needs students that can be in a class. Now the BCTF and the province have to return to the bargaining table to re-open discussions on a collective agreement that was signed following a sixweek strike in 2014. Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer said while local

teachers are certainly pleased with the ruling, they want to know what it is all going to mean in practical terms. “What we have been through is a generation of students and a generation of B.C. teachers teaching them that have worked in adverse conditions since the early 2000s,” said Steer. “We will have to start reacquainting ourselves with some of the stripped provisions that have been restored and finding out where we go from here. “For our part, the Delta Teachers’ Association wants to work collaboratively with the employer to make sure that timely and efficient implementation of the restored language is made.” Steer said top of mind for them is to ensure teachers are supported properly by adequate staffing, and quality time with students that need extra help. “We want to see restored special education teachers, more resources in our libraries, including teaching resources,” he said. “We have social problems in our communities, so we have a greater need for counselling for students, students who have mental health challenges and other issues in their lives. “In Delta, we have a number of refugee students who are probably among all new students some of the most needful and deserving students that we have. We need a comprehensive and welcoming support to facilitate integration of these students over time.” Steer is hoping that negotiations will begin soon as he would love to see changes implemented as early as this January, but with a provincial election looming next May, he admits that might not happen. “Actions speak louder
Paul Steer than words. What teachers are looking for is a government that is serious in its commitment to the human values that teachers spend every day trying to support,” Steer said. “Here is a great opportunity for everyone who truly does value education to come together and re-build something that we all can be proud of in British Columbia.” At the school board level, it’s business as usual, according to board chair Laura Dixon. “Right now everyone is in information and data gathering stages, but this contract runs until 2019, so we can keep going. Until something else is negotiated, it is still business as usual,” said Dixon. She said the current school board, previous boards and other boards around the province have lobbied for more resources, more supports for student learning and more teachers — all things she is hopeful will come to fruition once negotiations between the province and BCTF begin. “There is lots of data to collect across the province because 2002 was a long time ago and things are certainly vastly different,” added Dixon. “Our board and other boards have the role in getting our issues to the bargaining table. It’s time to get this right. It’s time to put our students’ learning first.”

Gallery expands to showcase more artists Business Buzz
Contemporary Canadian art is on display at Ian Tan Projects in Tsawwassen Mills. The setup is a temporary project space for Vancouver’s Ian Tan Gallery. “It’s a nice way for us to try a different space [and] expose more people to good, contemporary Canadian art. We’re getting a good response. People are very pleased to see us here,” said Jason Young, a consultant with the gallery. Works from approxi-
mately 30 artists, including Ladner’s Michael Abraham and Saltspring Island watercolourist Carol Evans, can be seen at the Ian Tan Projects space. “Basically the advantage here, is it’s bigger than our Granville space, therefore we’re able to show two or three pieces from everybody we represent at the same time,” explained Young. Ian Tan Projects is at Tsawwassen Mills near Entry 3 until Jan. 31. A Meet the Artist event will be held Dec. 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. with Abraham. Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association vice president Randy Scott (right) and Scott Robertson give 56th Street a holiday glow.
BIA lights up business district for the season
Few things put people into the Christmas spirit as much as the neighbourhood coming alive with twinkling lights in LED reds, blues and greens. In Tsawwassen, you can pretty much set your watch to the timing of the Christmas lights going up as the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association (TBIA) begins the process of festooning the town beginning on Thanksgiving. For the past 21 years, TBIA vice president Randy Scott and a few helpers have been spearheading the tireless tradition, dutifully stringing lights on the trees every Sunday night. Scott estimates he’s
hung between 600 and 700 strings of lights, with each string containing roughly 70 bulbs. Do the math: That’s upwards of 49,000 lights. “You can call me Griswold from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” says Scott, chuckling. “I love the lights. At the back of my house, I have 100 strings of lights in my backyard.” The TBIA strings up lights on trees and businesses, which you may notice as you pass by Home Hardware, White Spot or, of course, Randy’s Tire. As chair of the community enhancements committee for the TBIA, Scott says this annual tradition
is just another way to bring a smile to those who visit Tsawwassen. But while it’s nice to get a friendly wave from drivers, Scott is asking those behind the wheel to be careful around pedestrians, particularly those hanging up those cheery Christmas lights. “We appreciate that when we’re out hanging the lights that the people who notice us steer their car away from us because it does get a little scary.” The TBIA hangs the lights along 56th Street from Highway 17 to Winskill Park, and all across the commercial section of 12th Avenue. They were turned on Nov. 21 and will stay lit until the first week of January.

Jack Kearney shows off the certificate he received Monday from Mayor Lois Jackson.
Mayor gives recogntion to War Amps youngster
North Delta’s Jack Kearney was given special recognition Monday for his work spreading the War Amps’ Child Amputee Program (CHAMP) message for kids to play safe. Mayor Lois Jackson gave the 10-year-old Annieville Elementary student a Certificate of Appreciation for his dedication and involvement in CHAMP. A right leg amputee due to a birth defect, Kearney gives presentations and participates in other War Amps activities. He has also been meeting other kids who have lost limbs through accidents. Contest helps choose next year’s ‘chief’
Grade 5 students design holiday greeting cards for police dep’t IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Two local elementary students will be honoured as Chief for a Day next year by the Delta Police Department. The 2017 winners were announced this week following a holiday greeting card design contest in cooperation with the Delta School District. The winners are Stacy M. from Jarvis Elementary in North Delta and Abigail W. from Hawthorne Elementary in Ladner. Chief for a Day is a new initiative of Delta police in which a young person is invited to participate in the goings on of the department. The winning students will be sworn-in on the chosen day, issued a badge and uniform, and then will work through a full day at the department, attending meetings and officer safety training. They will then be taken to lunch by Chief Neil Dubord and then taken back to their school classrooms for a talk with their class. In order to identify the 2017 Chief for a Day, the Delta police ran a holiday greeting card design contest open to all Grade 5 students from Nov. 1 to 15. The criteria for the contest was simple — use artistic

imagination to design a holiday greeting card with a police theme. The winner will not only be the 2017 Chief for a Day but their design will serve as the official Delta police holiday greeting card. A selection committee comprised of Dubord, Insp. Varun Naidu and school district superintendent Doug Shepherd met Nov. 21 to select the winner. “All of the participating students created their artwork on their own time and used a lot of imagination,” said Dubord. “The talent of everyone in this age group is outstanding, making the decision to select only one winner impossible, so being the chief, I decided to change the rules slightly. Instead of choosing one winning design, we chose two. I was pleased to attend Jarvis and Hawthorne elementary schools to meet and congratulate the winners personally. Dubord thanked all students that took the time and effort to submit entries. “There were too many to choose from, so watch social media, you may see one of your designs featured on either my Twitter or Instagram posts during the month of December,” he said.

Community Firefighters are helping to create Blue Skies PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE
Delta Fire Fighters Charitable Society president John Burr presents a $25,000 cheque to Delta Hospice Society executive director Nancy Macey last week. The donation will help fund Delta Hospice’s Blue Skies Project that provides counselling and more to grieving children.
Four team up for charity craft fair Beach Grove event to support at-risk youth and homeless
Four philanthropicallyminded Tsawwassen women are teaming up this holiday season to bring some Christmas cheer to the community, hosting a craft fair that is also a fundraiser for at-risk youth and the homeless on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Robyn Leake brings her years of experience in art and landscape design as the host of the fourth annual Sparkle Christmas Craft Fair at her home in Beach Grove on Dec. 3 and 4. Along with her unique Grinch trees and winter containers, shoppers will find exotic giftware from Mexico, Turkey and Southeast Asia, as well as local organic honey, foodie gifts, unique jewelry, textiles and seasonal décor. This year the event is supporting Dan’s Legacy, a charity that provides therapeutic counselling and life-skills programs to youth battling depression, anxiety and addiction
issues as a result of childhood trauma and abuse. Barbara Coates, executive director of Dan’s Legacy, will be selling the award-winning cookbook A Boy After The Sea, featuring a collection of recipes by 26 internationally renowned chefs. The cookbook was created by chef Kevin Snook who lost his son Dan to an accidental drug overdose, and after whom the charity is named. Did it 4 Them, a charity created three years ago by Jennifer Schmidt and Laurissa Yurashak, has donated 2,400 bagged lunches, clothing and toiletries to the homeless on the Downtown Eastside. A key part of their work is to provide housewares and furniture to displaced women transitioning from the streets into new housing. The Sparkle Christmas Craft Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1642-58A St. Cash donations and dry goods are also welcome at the door.

Welcomes You Come worship with us Sunday, November 27, 2016 at 10:30 am Waiting with Isaiah…. At the Mountain of the Lord Isaiah 2:1-5
Recently my wife and I visited Fort Bragg, Calif. What took us there is Glass Beach, a beach covered with colourful sea glass. Up until the mid1960s, people threw their trash, old appliances and even pushed old cars over the cliff for the tide to carry away. Over the decades, the pounding surf has turned all that glass into something of beauty. There is even a sea glass museum in town, and places you can purchase sea glass jewelry. Many of the best places for sea glass are near old dumpsites, so the worst locations often result in the most beautiful sea glass beaches. Also, the more sea glass

is tossed and tumbled, the more beautiful and valuable it becomes. The rough edges are smoothed out and the surface is frosted from the salt water, waves and sand. There are some interesting parallels between sea glass and life. Sometimes
the things that bring the greatest beauty and value in our lives are the bad places we’ve come from and the bad things we have gone through. There is something exceptional about someone who has come through suffering with a spirit of hope and grace. They are the people we turn to when we go through our own suffering. They have been there and truly understand. The Bible talks about how this truth can help our attitude toward suffering: Our suffering, as awful as it is, can add beauty and value to our lives. Honouring memories in creative ways An Art-full Life
MEG & MARY ANN
On Remembrance Day, we remember the thousands of men and women have risked their lives by serving in the armed forces. As we lead up to Christmas, many of us find this time of year difficult as we are all too aware of our loved ones who are no longer with us. How can we honour their memory? How can we build relationships between generations, provide young people with mentors and educate each other on compassionate care? Here are a few creative ideas of how to honour the memory of our loved ones and connect with those around us in meaningful
and tangible ways: 1. Encourage storytelling: Simply listen. Listen without correction or criticism. Everyone has a story. Listening patiently to the stories of others can have a positive impact on a person’s self-confidence and can be a way to process the past, grieve, cope, reconcile and reconnect. You can also learn a thing or two. 2. Reflective writing: Write a memoir (either of your own life or the life of another), a letter, card or journal. Encouraging notes to yourself and others is not only good for the soul, but it keeps the mind sharp and active. Sharing a life story could even turn into a best seller. 3. Scrapbook: Make a scrapbook. Use old photos, letters and other memorabilia to visually represent memories. Involve family members in the process. Children and grandchildren are more likely to ask about the past when visual cues help spark a rich conversation. 4. Display, disperse or donate special heirlooms.
Many of us have special family heirlooms that hold a special spot in our hearts (a box of war medals, a piece of jewelry, a tattered book); sort through them and display the more sentimental pieces. Take photos of the rest before parting with them. Disperse other heirlooms to family members who may want to keep them and then donate the rest. Even leave a small note about the piece for its next owners to enjoy. 5. Use media: Reminisce by viewing old slides, video or audio recordings. Better yet, record your family members as they speak. There are many companies that can convert slides, film and audio into digital recordings. The finished project would make for a unique and special gift. 6. Print a favourite picture or common saying of your loved one on a mug. Enjoy their presence as you sip your tea and coffee. A simple picture can even help remember the precious moments with your loved one.

Dancing with (tame) wolves in Quebec JAMIE ROSS
Optimist contributor
I stagger sleepily from my cozy bed inside the Mongolian yurt, open the airtight stove and stir up the glowing embers inside. I add some wood shavings, kindling and logs, while blowing gently on the coals, gradually coaxing the fire back to life. It is minus 30 outside tonight, but if I keep the flames going, it stays pleasant within the ornate shelter. Suddenly, the quiet of the winter’s night is broken by the haunting howl of the wolves. Perhaps they have heard me shuffling around in the yurt. Their deep-throated howl starts with a single voice, and then the whole pack joins the chorus. The sound is all-encompassing, beautiful and soothing. I step outside into the cold night air and peer into the vast wolf enclosure. Dark shapes dart about. I see their eyes glowing in the moonlight. I see their curiosity. Despite the chill, I stand in awe. I have bedded down in a
place called Parc Mahika, (the Cree word for wolf) in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec. Here, guests are able to interact with wolves — and the wolves are able, I will discover on this day, to interact with us. Aventuraid is an outdoor adventure company founded by French ex-pat Gilles Granal, who came to Canada in 1987 to experience the great outdoors. He never left. Now, he embodies that outdoors with his long braided hair, wolf tattoos on his arms, camouflage clothing and the easy way in which he relates with his wolf pack. His Parc Mahican includes three large wolf enclosures, two of which contain packs that remain shy and reclusive – the grey wolves that serenaded me in the night and a wellappointed pack of Arctic wolves. A third enclosure, however, contains a mixed pack, which were imprinted by humans at a very young age. As a result, they are comfortable and accepting — even welcom-

Gilles Granal, otherwise known as the wolf whisperer, with one of his charges in Parc Mahika. ing — and it is this group that we will venture in to visit. Although the wolves seem to eagerly anticipate our visit (Granal points out they have shown interest by choosing to meet us at the gate), he enters first to test their mood, which is
obviously nothing more than supreme affection for the man. Luna, a 150pound Arctic wolf, leaps on Granal’s chest and playfully wrestles him to the ground. We are called in and instructed to let the animals approach us, and
not to force ourselves on them. The wolves sniff and nudge, at first quite excited to have visitors. After a few minutes they calm down and accept us into their home. They are both playful and at times belligerent with each other as their hierarchy is reinforced. With us, they seem almost as friendly as pet dogs. One sprawls on her back against my legs, wanting a belly scratch. Another jumps up with its massive paws on my shoulders, then tries to pinch my camera. We move deeper into the thick boreal forest of the enclosure. Some wolves stay with us, trying to steal mitts or hats, while others, boring of us, melt away back into the trees. The experience is wonderful. There is plenty more fun to be had in the frozen winter world of SaguenayLac-St-Jean. After our wolf experience, we meet up with some more canine inhabitants of Aventuraid, helping to harness and hook up a team of six
willing Malamutes for a two-hour dogsled excursion. Aventuraid offers short tastes of sledding to longer, multi-day outings, giving you the chance to mush your own team of huskies. Later we take a snow cat up to the Valley of the Phantoms in Parc national des Monts-Valin, for a snowshoe trek through an eerily beautiful winter landscape. The valley receives in excess of five metres of snow annually, leaving the conifers heavy with powder for a ghost-like appearance. After a day on the mountain, we enjoy an overnight stay at the wonderfully rustic Antoine Debuc Lodge overlooking Baie d’Alexis, and head out onto the frozen lake after dinner in search of the Northern Lights. Focus on
I always look forward to December with enthusiasm, excitement and a degree of dread; the parties, the food, celebrating with family and friends - crowds, noise, shopping and cleaning! Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or Festivus the holidays are a busy, emotionallycharged, time of year. For a senior with physical and/ or cognitive challenges, it can be particularly overwhelming. But, with planning, empathy and patience the celebrations can be fun for everyone from the youngest to the eldest. Here are a few tips from specialists in Senior care: 1. Plan to reduce stress/ anxiety. Something that will benefit all of us, plan a quiet area, somewhere to escape the onslaught of sensory stimulation; a place to rest up for, or recover from, activity. If you know a member of the family who easily becomes anxious, designate someone (or take turns) to be their companion and keep them comfortable. 2. Consider the furniture. If everyone is coming to the
home of a senior with vision or memory impairment, think twice before moving furniture to where it won’t be expected as they navigate their home. And if you do move something, make sure it’s moved back after the party. If the party is somewhere unfamiliar to the senior, consider if there is enough space for their walker (if they have) and remove hazards such as area rugs to prevent falls. 3. Spend time reminiscing. People with memory problems normally have an easier time recalling events from the past and are eager to share what it was like “back when”. For the kids, it can be fun to hear what their parents were like as kids. 4. Find a way to include everyone. Remember, that just because Mom can’t plan and cook the whole holiday meal anymore, it doesn’t mean she can’t help fold napkins or help with peeling vegetables. Break down tasks to the level of capability so everyone can share in the event from the eldest to youngest. Remember,
Seniors Teena love
General Manager Amenida Seniors Community invaluable memories are still being made for the next generation. Lastly, December is a month when the pain of lost family and friends is felt more acutely and depression will set in more quickly. I encourage you to be aware of the people around you, young and old. Think about the people you know who, for one reason or another, may not have family or friends to share with and reach out. Notice the person in the mall, amid the bustle, who looks alone and lonely; help reconnect them to the world, if only with eye contact and a smile. Live the season.

Semi-finalshowdownatB.C.Place South Delta faces Terry Fox for 3rd straight year with berth in provincial final on the line MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
What would the B.C High School Football playoffs be without a clash with the Terry Fox Ravens? For the third straight year, the South Delta Sun Devils (8-2) will meet the juggernaut Port Coquitlam school (8-2) on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) at B.C. Place Stadium with a berth in the ‘AAA’ championship game on the line. Two years ago, the Devils stunned the top ranked Ravens 16-13 on a frigid and snow covered field at UBC en route to the provincial title. Last season, it was Terry Fox rolling to a convincing 33-14 quarter-final victory. This time, both teams head into the tilt with plenty of momentum. Since a heartbreaking one-point loss to Vancouver College, South Delta has reeled off four consecutive wins, including last week’s 48-11 quarter-final romp over Centennial. The impressive run has coincided with the return of two-way standout Grant McDonald to full health. The three-year starter had a prominent role in the two previous playoff encounters and feels good about his team’s chances. “After that loss to VC it has felt a lot like the 2014 season,” said McDonald following a practice session on Tuesday at the Winskill turf field. “We are just together a lot more as a team. The practices are more crisp and everyone is working hard. I’m really proud of the team and how we have come along. Everyone knows how big this game is and you can just see how serious they are taking their reps this week.” McDonald’s main task

South Delta Sun Devils Doug Jameson makes a terrific grab in his team’s decisive 48-11 quarter-final win over Centennial last Saturday at B.C. Place. The Sun Devils’ will be riding a season-high four game win streak into their provincial semi-final tilt with the Terry Fox Ravens. from his linebacker position will be trying to contain Ravens’ star running back Jeremie Kanakolongo who has put up huge numbers all season, including a monster game in last week’s 34-25 quarter-final win over Mt. Doug. The senior is averaging 190yards a game along the ground. “That’s the game plan for sure,” admitted McDonald. “We have been scheming and watching a lot of film to try and get his reads. He’s an athlete who is going to make plays and we are going to try and make plays as well. “I’m excited. They are a fun team to play against
and I have a lot of respect for them. It’s going to be a hard-fought battle.” The Sun Devils’ offence has been on a major roll the past month, led by Grade 11 quarterback Michael Calvert who looks more comfortable under centre each week. His 21 touchdown passes leads the entire province. He has also rushed for nearly 900 yards. Late last season, Calvert stepped into the starting position even though he was still quarterbacking the South Delta Bantam Rams community team. That meant grasping two playbooks and playing American and Canadian
rules on different days. “It was a tough transition and I definitely feel more comfortable now,” he smiled. “I think at the beginning of the season we were playing as individuals. Now we are a team and you can see that bonding and stuff at school too. We are all together now.” What has pleased head coach Ray Moon of late is how multi-dimensional the offence has become with different receivers stepping up to make big plays. That was a huge part of the successful playoff run in 2014. South Delta also has a solid running game it can lean on too. He is quietly confident
about his team’s chances Saturday, hoping a very tough conference schedule, that featured a steady diet of ranked teams, will pay dividends. “All year we have been playing in a real-hard conference,” said Moon. “There have been challenges each and every week and getting ready for Fox isn’t too different than our league. The game really comes down to: can our run defence take out their run? and can their pass defence take out our passing game? “We told the guys they are just as good as them and need to go out and play our game.”

Goals hard to come by at provincials for Devils MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Even one fortuitous bounce could have made a world of difference in the South Delta Sun Devils’ fate at the recent B.C. “AAA” Field Hockey Championships in Surrey. The Sun Devils surrendered just one goal in five games but, remarkably, only finished 11th in the 16-team tournament. A goalless drought in round-robin play proved to be their undoing as the Fraser Valley champions failed to secure a quarter-final berth. South Delta battled to three consecutive scoreless draws in games against Churchill, Mt. Doug and McMath. The lack of scoring continued all the way through to its final consolation game — a 2-0 win over Sullivan Heights. The tournament’s top defensive record by a considerable margin proved to be small consolation for a frustrated group of girls and head coach Neil McLennan. “While our field play was very good we could not get much luck around the goal. I think we found just about every way possible, to do everything correctly in the field but not place the ball into the net, somehow. At times it became sadly comical,” said McLennan. The Sun Devils put themselves in a difficult position by not producing a win in their opening games against Churchill and Mt. Doug — two opponents they were expected to beat. That meant they

another draw sealed their fate. South Delta moved onto conso-
lation play where it prevailed in a shootout (4-1) over Eric Hamber with Eve Carrothers, Bailey Mitchell, Jess Goodfellow and Annalise Poohachoff converting from the spot. Abi Smart was solid in net. The only goal surrendered over the three-day tournament followed in a 1-0 loss to Oak Bay. The Victoria school scored in the late going despite the Devils controlling most of the play. The dam at last burst in the win over Sullivan Heights, that was result of some excellent passing sequences. “Defence and goaltending were obviously solid and our ability to shift the ball around the field was probably as good as nearly any team there,” added McLennan. “We were just missing that final killing blow within 5-10 meters of the goal. Two of our critical Grade 12 veteran attacking players could not play at 100 percent which did not help our cause around the net but, in sport, occasionally adversity does strike and that is when the character of a team can be revealed. “Even though results were not what we had hoped, the girls never let down and actually improved as the days rolled on. By the end we were probably playing our best hockey.” The team loses three key players to graduation — Kyra Kuramoto, Goodfellow and Poohachoff — however, have a young core that has gained significant experience for next season.

David was born at home in North Burnaby. A loving father of two sons, he shared his interest in mechanics with them, as well as his curiosity, creativity, and genius with numbers. He and his wife Lyla enjoyed almost 46 years of marriage. The family travelled extensively together and David - a talented photographer - took many stunning shots. He began his career as an aircraft mechanic (AME) with Canadian Pacific Airlines, eventually retiring nearly 45 years later as a maintenance planner with Air Canada. David loved his job, took pride in his team, made lasting friendships, and recalled that it rarely felt like work. In retirement he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity ReStore. David found an outlet for his artistic talents with the Richmond Carvers Society. He was an incredible grandfather who has inspired his grandchildren with his carvings, woodworking skills, drawings, volunteer work, and bottomless loving patience. David is predeceased by his son, “little” David. He is survived by many wonderful friends and family, in particular: his wife Lyla, son Gordon (Dana), beloved grandchildren Samuel and Sydney, brothers Brian (Fran) and John (Nazreen) Burns, and cousins - who were truly brothers - Norm and Bern MacLeod. A service will be held at Ladner United Church (4960 48th Ave, Delta) on December 3 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of David to the Delta Hospital Foundation or the Delta Hospice Society.

Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember.
