Friends are rallying around the owner of Dave’s Pop Culture, pledging to keep the Ladner Village store open following a terrible car accident last week. Dave Strutt was the driver of a van involved in a serious collision with a semi-truck on Ladner Trunk Road Nov. 23. Daylene Jones, one of many
friends who have stepped up to keep the store open, said Strutt has a long road to recovery. She said the whole left side of his body has broken bones, including a broken hip, damaged knee, broken arm in three places and compressed ribs. “He is still in a lot of pain and has trouble sitting up. He’s out of ICU, but still in hospital,” Jones said. “It could be weeks, months before he is fully recovered. We

Salmon in Tsaw. culvert Chum follow channel from Boundary Bay in their search for fresh water IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Chum salmon are returning in large numbers across the Lower Mainland, so much so they’re being spotted in some unique places. Last week residents alerted officials at Metro Vancouver and the Corporation of Delta about an abundance of chum salmon in a culvert in Tsawwassen. “Essentially there is a channel of water that leads from the ocean in Boundary Bay and the channel goes through the estuary of what would have been a creek historically,” said Robyn Worcester, a natural resource management specialist with Metro Vancouver. “The salmon are in the ocean and can sense the fresh water, so they explore up that fresh water system.” Worcester said this year has been a particularly good one for chum salmon returns. “Chum salmon go to new places to explore and places where they maybe

once you do that, you can attract salmon. “If you create the habitat, they will come back. It really goes to show that if people pursue habitat restoration initiatives they can expect salmon to return to those systems, so it’s just a matter of if you build it, they will come.” Mike Brotherston, climate action and environ-
ment manager for the Corporation of Delta, said he has never encountered chum salmon in that area before. “From what I know, one of the nearby residents did see this a number of years ago, so it’s not a regular occurrence for sure,” he said. “There are not a lot of active things we can do.

The fish can’t go further upstream from there and it does look like they have potentially done some spawning in the channel. “Whether or not that is successful is unknown, but because it is still in the intertidal area it is not ideal conditions, but with favourable tides the salmon will potentially move along.”
Store has created a real community for customers
CONTINUED from Page 1 “My husband and I moved to Ladner because of the store. We liked it so much we just wanted to be a part of it.” On Wednesday evening, friends and staff were busy re-stocking the store in anticipation of a sale of instock items where patrons will get major discounts depending on the item.

A charity games tournament is set for Sunday, Dec. 11 from noon to 5 p.m. to also help raise money. The game of choice will be DC Deck Building, one of Strutt’s favourites. There is a $25 buy-in for participants. “We are also trying to support the community, so if people are not gamers themselves, we’re encour-
aging them to come in and buy a game, or a toy or a comic, and donate it to Deltassist,” said Jones. “Every year Dave donates toys and games to them, so it’s a really important charity for him. “He tells a story every Christmas that one time he donated, I think some magic cards, and a mom came in and told him how
much she appreciated the gift and that it was the first time her son was able to get something like that. We really want to keep that legacy alive.” The Ladner Business Association is also stepping up, trying to spread the word. “It’s just the right thing to do,” said LBA president Andrea Frustaci. “We just
want to let the community know what is going on and if they can help out and support the store, that would be appreciated. The LBA is in the process of organizing a merchants’ open house on Dec. 18. The comic store plans to be a part of that event, offering caricatures and maybe some giftwrapping by donation.

The premier doesn’t want to speculate when rapid transit will be added to the 10-lane bridge set to replace the George Massey Tunnel.
No rapid transit timeline as bridge work to begin SANDOR GYARMATI

Maybe it will happen one day. While the province moves full steam ahead with the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project, a 10-lane bridge that also includes an extensive series of road projects on both sides of the Fraser River, the question of how soon rapid transit will be part of the bridge remains unclear. The bridge design will include the capacity for adding rapid transit, most likely light rail, but the province has not committed to start such a service when the bridge opens in 2022, nor has it given any indication when that might happen.

lobbying hard for such a project. She said Surrey will get its LRT but she didn’t want to speculate on any potential timeline for Delta. “We’ve got to think of the region as a whole and if it makes sense for LRT to come and if there’s enough density and people that would use it. Certainly the Canada Line has turned out to be a phenomenal success, way higher usership than anyone had anticipated, so let’s see how it grows,” she said. Construction of the $3.5-billion-bridge is to begin next year and be completed by 2022. The project includes a rapid bus station at Highway 17A, but that’s going to be constructed by the province.

The fact both TransLink and Metro Vancouver’s Mayors’ Council don’t even have LRT connecting Richmond to South Delta and beyond on any longterm transit improvement list likely means it will be up to the province and feds to come up with the funding. In a recent interview, accompanied by Premier Christy Clark, Coun. Ian Paton, who is running for the Liberals in Delta South in next May’s election, said everyone would love to see rapid transit, but the priority, for now, should be on getting the bridge built. Clark quipped that having two MLAs, including Delta North incumbent Scott Hamilton, would mean having two members of the legislature

Amber flashers making Ladner crossings safer Upgrades underway on Arthur and Harvest SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Intersections throughout Delta are being made safer to cross. Drivers in Ladner in recent days have likely noticed several crosswalk upgrades along Arthur Drive and Harvest Drive. Work is also being done in North Delta, and the plan is to have even more installed next year. Pedestrian-activated amber flashers and one pedestrian controlled red light have been installed on Arthur Drive as part of a street upgrade project, while amber flashers were installed on Harvest Drive crosswalks, including an overhead flasher by Dugald Morrison Park at Mountain View Boulevard. In total, Delta spent around $450,000 on crosswalk upgrades this year, said engineering director Steven Lan. Earlier this year, Delta council approved an engineering department recommendation to expand the program for 2017 to upgrade 10 additional crosswalks with side-mounted, pedestrianactivated rectangular rapid flash beacons.
Amber flashers are being added to the crosswalk adjacent to Dugald Morrison Park. At locations where the traffic volumes may not yet warrant the installation of an overhead sign and mounted flash beacons, which cost an average of $90,000, or at locations where the installation of an overhead mast arm may be cost prohibitive, staff recommended installing rapid flash beacons. Those side-mounted beacons cost just $30,000 per location. Lan said the locations for most of the upgraded crosswalks for 2017 still have to be determined and the school district and police department will be consulted to find the best spots.
A staff report notes that between 2009 and 2013, 134 pedestrian-related crashes were record in Delta. North Delta accounted for most of them at 102, while Ladner had 24 and Tsawwassen recorded eight. There are currently 100 marked and signed pedestrian crosswalks in Delta and the municipality’s transportation technical committee is proposing they all be upgraded to pedestrian-activated flashers of some kind. Studies have shown that pedestrian-activated flashers significantly increase the compliance for drivers yielding to pedestrians.

t should really come as no surprise that job seekers are in an enviable position these days in South Delta. When the two mega malls at the Tsawwassen First Nation were in the works, they prompted much discussion in these parts, the most common topic being whether these retail behemoths could attract shoppers in sufficient numbers to a relatively remote location. There wasn’t a whole lot of talk about attracting employees to the stores that would eventually set up shop here, although I imagine mall officials had quite a few conversations in that regard. That’s because the circumstances here aren’t terribly conducive to filling the approximately 3,000 full-time and part-time jobs created by the 200-store Tsawwassen Mills, to say nothing of the staffing requirements of the 100-store Tsawwassen Commons next door. A small, older South Delta population, a location at the end of the road and transit service so good Tsawwassen Mills is running its own employee shuttle are all conspiring to create staffing challenges. I counted 191 job postings on the Tsawwassen Mills website Wednesday morning, which sounds like a big number (because it is), but compared to the 3,000 total positions, it’s just over six per cent, which is like having one opening from a staff of 15 or 16. Put that way, it doesn’t seem so bad. Arriving at the party later, Tsawwassen Commons could have an even more difficult time as its stores open in the months ahead given the employee pool is getting shallower by the day. Existing businesses looking for staff also face the same predicament. Those caught up in it are putting a positive spin on the situation, presumably because of the negative connotation that goes with the difficulty of attracting staff, but any challenges being experienced have far more to do with circumstance than employers. The number of employees that will be needed at full build-out is equal to the entire population of a place like Golden or Port Hardy, which might not be too hard to find if the two malls were in, say, Surrey, but becomes problematic given their TFN location. That doesn’t give employers much comfort, but on the bright side, there’s never been a better time to look for work in South Delta.
Work still to be done to reach world class oil spill response
O
ver the past several months we have heard politicians talk about “world class oil spill recovery.” I am here to say the term is virtually meaningless. No such quantitative definition of this condition exists. If your house were on fire, you would want the fire service to attend within, say, five minutes. If you called an ambulance, you would want a similar response from fire and then paramedics (as we now sequence the services). If you spotted a water leak on or adjacent to your property and called Delta, would you think you should wait three weeks for someone to stop the leak? To place times on how long to attend and to fix is to set out a quantitative standard. In 1989, the Exxon Valdez went aground in Alaska. Today — 27 years later — there is still oil and chemical dispersants to be found on the beaches. Those who helped in the cleanup have often reported compromised health from the toxic substances. The recent grounding of a tug near Bella Bella took 33 days to get the tug out of the ocean and onto a barge to stop the oil leaking. In that time diesel leaked from the boat and compromised
Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON
much of the crab fishery in the area severely, if not permanently. Despite this, the Canadian Coast Guard said the right things were done! Minister of Transport Marc Garneau says this was not good enough. What then is good enough? What is world class? Canada has just approved a proposal by Kinder Morgan to ship “dil-bit” from Alberta tar sands to Asia by tanker from the Lower Mainland. The choice of a loading dock — Burnaby or Delta — causes concern not just for the dock area. The Delta dock would cause great harm to the ecosystem already under attack by the Port of Vancouver for its desired T2 expansion. The shipping route to open ocean involves at least six turns on the route and several
hours en route. Their proposal will result in hundreds of transits of tankers on the route each year. Even with tugs, what might happen? What spill response is there when winter winds are high and waves are rough? Under these conditions, there is no way to recover spilled dil-bit. Placing recovery teams and supplies such that any spill en route can be challenged within, say, 15 minutes, and not four days, is way beyond what Kinder Morgan, associates and Canada have in mind. Their plans for spill recovery will only work effectively on calm waters. Meanwhile, what do you say to nearby residents, salmon and whales? My suggestion for a world class standard is to set out a maximum time to get to the scene of a problem (minutes), with sufficient equipment to contain all the contaminants, to arrive with tug capability to take over the ship, to have a prohibition on transiting during stormy periods, to have pilots on board (now in place) and to couple all of this with a much higher indemnity fund. Until then it’s back to the drawing board. Ian Robertson is a retired chemical engineer and three-decade resident of South Delta.

Hope for Liberals’ new oceans plan
Editor: This past summer, I, along with representatives from various environmental groups, were invited to a roundtable meeting with MP Carla Qualtrough and MP Jonathan Wilkinson to discuss concerns regarding cumulative industrial development on the Fraser River estuary. Many ideas were brought forward, and although not everyone agreed on all points, those in attendance did seem to agree that cumulative effects of port and
industrial development, including loss of agricultural land and ecosystem impacts, seemed to be an afterthought of those currently in the driver’s seat. Groups and individuals stressed the need for regional planning on the cumulative impacts to the Fraser River, and that a variety of stakeholders, not just the Port of Vancouver, should be involved in those discussions. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced a new Oceans Protection Plan and
although not focused on in the media, this plan has taken into account the concerns raised at that roundtable discussion. Qualtrough has explained the plan will re-establish regional planning forums based on the past models of the Fraser River Estuary Management Program and the Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program. A new and improved system will provide for future direction on engagement and regional planning in four pilot
areas, including southern B.C. The implementation of an effective regional planning mechanism along the Fraser River is a step in the right direction for this high impact region. Inclusion of diverse perspectives in the planning stage is key and I look forward to seeing how the Liberal government leads this initiative and if it can figure out how to strike a balance for all parties involved. Animals shouldn’t be used as commodities
Editor: Re: Dancing with (tame) wolves in Quebec, Nov. 25 I wonder how many of your readers questioned the ethics of keeping packs of wolves captive in enclosures so tourists can pretend they’re in the wilderness. It’s simply impossible to re-create a natural environment and captive animals are known to suffer from extreme stress, no matter how large or enriched the enclosure
may be. Having had his fill of wolves, the author then turns to domestic canines at a dogsled business. Very few tourists have been invited to see behind the scenes where the dogs live when they’re not running. However, a CBC-funded documentary will be premiering at the Whistler Film Festival on Dec. 3 and 4 called, appropriately, Sled Dogs, that does just that.
In a recent interview, filmmaker Fern Levitt describes her shock after partaking in a dogsled excursion, when she asked to be taken to where the dogs were kept. She found 300 to 400 dogs chained in a field with plastic barrels as their shelters. “The image will never leave my mind,” she said. Then she heard about the massacre of 50 dogs in Whistler after the 2010 Winter Olympics and she
decided, as a journalist, she had to explore it. Her film is graphic and disturbing and will send shock waves through the industry. Most damning is her discovery that an effort to create a humane sled dog business failed miserably and left dozens of dogs homeless. Whenever animals are used as commodities, their welfare is at risk. They cannot defend themselves. Debra Probert

Sign, sign, everywhere a government sign Infrastructure project signs are a sneaky way to keep advertising spending off the books
MLA’s Report
VICKI HUNTINGTON
In November 2012, the provincial government installed five signs along Highway 99 to announce that construction was starting on a replacement
of the George Massey Tunnel… in five years’ time. There have been signs up ever since, so when a constituent asked just how much the highway advertisements actually cost, my office decided to try and find out. Naturally, it took a freedom of information request to get the answer. The government says the 2012 signs were a necessary consultation tool that “invited public participation.” According to invoices obtained via that freedom of information request, it cost $16,331 to have those signs installed, although printing costs were not disclosed.
The Massey signs that are up right now were a special order in 2014, and were a pricey $60,598 for production and installation. So that’s at least $77,000 spent on advertising the tunnel replacement. Of course we all know the signs were not simply a consultation tool: they were pre-election advertising targeted at commuters. Their primary function has always been to create some sliver of hope that while you might be stuck in traffic right now, there is an uncongested future awaiting you. And it’s the same story all over the province: signs

with project start dates that are years away. These are then altered with the red, “project completed” signs that are slapped on top of the old ones. These signs are a form of government advertising, and unreported government advertising at that. They are not included in the government’s provincial advertising budget and cost details are not available to the public. It’s anyone’s guess as to the total amount government spends each year on project signs across the province. Poppy Campaign raises over $33,000 for Legion
Tsawwassen branch funds many worthy causes
Every year the Royal Canadian Legion conducts the Poppy Campaign to honour those who serve and to raise funds in support of veterans and their families. The Tsawwassen branch had members distributing poppies and collecting donations at Tsawwassen Mills, raising over $5,000 leading up to Remembrance Day. Tsawwassen Legion president Gary Bain thanked the mall, retailers and the many visitors to the Mills who donated generously. “Donations from this
campaign were truly excellent,” he said. Tsawwassen Mills general manager Mark Fenwick said the mall is committed to supporting the community. The Tsawwassen branch also thanked local residents for their generous support of this year’s Poppy Campaign. More than $33,000 was raised overall. The branch is dedicated to returning the donations to the community. The branch has served the community for 22 years and has made over $300,000 in donations

to veterans’ causes and worthwhile outreach programs. Recent donations have been made to the Honor House Society (veterans’ transition program), Delta Hospital Foundation, George Derby Centre, Amos Ferguson Manor (a residence for seniors), Delta Mental Health, 828 Hurricane Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets, the Boys and Girls Club and other worthy programs. A military background is no longer a pre-requisite for Legion membership and new members are welcome.

A celebration was held last Friday to mark the Wintemute Boys and Girls Club’s 20th anniversary. There was lots of laughter and joy at a dinner attended by kids and their families, said Leslie Abramson, a past president of the club and now an honourary director. “It was just a good place to be,” she said. The 8,500-square foot clubhouse was opened in November of 1996 after a campaign raised almost $1.4 million in cash and in-kind donations. The club has offered sports and social programs to Ladner youth since the late 1980s but used rented space in schools, community halls and churches due to the lack of a permanent space. “There was such a need for it,” said Abramson, referring to the clubhouse named after late businessman and philanthropist Errol Wintemute. Last week’s anniversary event was also a chance for the club’s kids and their families to mark the holidays, said Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast BC president and CEO Carolyn Tuckwell. There are over 100 kids who belong to the Ladner club, she noted. What’s most important to the organization is that every kid knows they are welcome, she said. “The reason that our

and adults, Tuckwell explained. Developing healthy living behaviours is also a focus, she said, adding the club works to provide kids with leadership opportunities. Popular programs include cooking, sports and homework clubs.

Welcomes You Come worship with us Sunday, December 4, 2016 at 10:30 am Waiting with Isaiah…. For the Fruitful Branch Isaiah 11:1-10
The seven-year-old child who blesses my life informed me the other day that her favourite holiday was Christmas. Hoping for one of those teachable moments, I asked her why it was her favourite. “Because of the c-a-n-d-y,” she spelled out. I really am a churchlady at heart, so I pushed a bit and said, “What about the lights? Don’t you love seeing the lights?” Well, that got her attention and, of course, an hour-long drive around the neighbourhood looking at all the lovely lights on people’s houses. But on that hour-long trip, I may have used the opportunity to tell her a story… just a most wonderful story.
Minister’s Minute ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT
All Saints Anglican Church
You see, at this time of year, before Christmas day comes, we wait with expectation and hope for light to come back into our world. We remember that as Christians we proclaim
that God brought a little light to the world on that first Christmas so long ago — in the form of a baby, whose name was Jesus. Jesus brought light and peace to people who were living in fear and anxiety just by being with them and listening to their prayers and hopes. It was almost as if Jesus was able to ignite a little light within each heart of the people whom he met, so that their light could shine. My little one has a light in her heart, a light that shines even when life can be difficult, and especially when she’s waiting for c-a-n-d-y! Ah, but her light shines. How about yours?

inging with the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir is helping Ladner’s Flower Pearson on her road to recovery from substance addiction. Pearson says she’s learned that it’s not the end of the world if you make mistakes as well as to enjoy the journey, regardless of what the end result might be. “I’ve also learnt that if I’m not the very best, I can still be good and still have a good time,” she says. Pearson, who’s also in a 12-step program, says part of addiction is “pride and wanting to do stuff on your own” but it’s not like that with the choir, something that’s beautiful and bigger than an individual. “I’m not brilliant, I haven’t got the best voice, I’m not the soloist, I’m not the star, but I love it and I’m a part of it and it’s great,” she says. Her father died suddenly when Pearson was just 12. “After something like that happens, the rug is pulled out from under you so much, you just think there’s no point in anything,” she says. She says she “stopped growing up” when she lost her dad. “I’m still, at the age of 43, learning how to be a grown-up.” Pearson, a parish administrator at All Saints Church in Ladner, says

And it’s just as good, if not better. That’s how it goes.” Good Noise Vancouver

Retired Delta teacher Elizabeth Turin will have prints of her artwork on display at the Tsawwassen United Church next weekend. “It’s a passion. It’s a therapy,” she says of her artwork, noting that she likes colour and originality. Her show and sale, titled Inkstains, will include about 60 different prints. She’ll also have a book,
which she describes as a “new age journal,” at the show. Proceeds from the show will go towards the church and community groups that provide mental health support, she notes. Turin, who lives in Tsawwassen, says she taught “all over Delta.” The show runs Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tsawwassen United Church is located at 69353rd St.

I’m sitting with friends at an open-air restaurant, sipping coffee and listening to people chatting in Spanish at neighbouring tables. Pots of bright yellow marigolds, heads nodding in the breeze, fringe the patio, and the slant of sun across the stone flagged courtyard lends a sense of leisure. It is my first day in Campeche, Mexico and I’m savouring the unhurried hours. Campeche’s historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is contained within an octagonal border of white-washed walls with gates at the four points of the compass. Were it not for the presence of traffic nosing past rows of tightly parked cars, it would be easy to imagine that I am back in the 17th century walking along these narrow lanes, the sunlight throwing octagonal shadows across the walls of Spanish-style houses painted vivid blue, red, green and yellow, and

Having subdued the indigenous Mayan population, the Spanish were complacent in their enjoyment of the good life – lush surroundings, fertile land, balmy weather. They were to be shaken out of their easygoing lifestyle as marauding pirates swept across the town, pillaging, raping and killing. Alarmed, the Spanish settlers turned Campeche into a fortified city with battery-equipped forts, two of which are open to
visitors. We explore one of them, the Fort of San Miguel, where cannons along the battlement overlook the sea. The rooms that housed soldiers and army officers now offer a display of Mayan artifacts. Campeche’s Spanish heritage is on display in Casa #6, a Moorish-style house situated by the town square. It offers glimpses into the lifestyle of a wellto-do family in the early part of the 20th century. A passageway with slate tile flooring, marble columns and stained glass arches encircles an open patio, and doors leading
off from here take us to bedrooms, living rooms, a spacious dining room and kitchen. We peer at old photographs, water colour paintings, period furniture and elaborate china vases. We drop by the town’s zocalo (town square), a pleasant green space with shady trees sheltering wrought-iron benches. There aren’t many people about and there isn’t a single foreign tourist in sight. Later that night, the zocalo is livelier. Local families have gathered to watch a series of dramatic images and music depicting the essence of Campeche — its history,
celebrations and traditions — projected across the facade of an adjacent building. Larger-than-life scenes and characters dance across the screen that stretches across an entire block. I am held spellbound until the last image and music fades. I join friends on a shopping trip to the local meat and produce market, a far cry from our sanitized Canadian supermarkets. Here, carcasses of defeathered, pimply-skinned chickens and joints of beef hang from skewers; several varieties of fish, slashed and bloody, lie on slabs, and raw prawns the size of
my fist sit in tubs. Fruit stalls are stacked with ripe mangoes, papayas and cantaloupes. Vendors and customers haggle vociferously, and throngs of people fill the narrow aisles. A retreat from the stress of modern city life, Campeche offers simple joys: strolls along the town’s malecon, a broad boulevard flanking the seawall, where I pause to watch boats bobbing at anchor and fishermen selling their catch of the day. There’s the tranquility of evening as the sun dips below the rippled sea and the sky turns mauve in the afterglow. As dusk envelops the town, lights twinkle along the malecon and the night is filled with lap of water against the seawall and the distant sound of guitars wafting out of a seafront restaurant. I’ve done most of this itinerary and loved it – weather should be equivalent to doing an Alaska sailing in early September. It’s just a great part of the world and this is exceptional value.
“Of all the things I ever lost, I miss my mind the most.” I used to get a good chuckle over that quote, until I got a little older and started the “Where did I put that?” game. You know that game. Where, you wonder inwardly, did I put my keys? Where did I put my phone? Where did I put my glasses? Where did I put my husband? It starts in your mid-30s and gets worse as you age. You chalk it up to being stressed, lack of sleep or because of the kids, but what is really happening is that your brain is aging. What can you do to keep your brain young? Try one, or all, of these tips: Exercise. One of the best tips to keep your brain young is to exercise. A combination of aerobic and strength spurs the development of new nerve cells and increases the connections between the brain cells. This, in turn, slows down our mental decline. TIP: Aim for three to four times of aerobic work a week, with two to three sessions of weight training. Stress less. Stress is bad for your brain (as well as
Hang out with friends. We are social animals and spending time with others is important for our brain health. In a 2012 Dutch study, it was shown that loneliness increased the risk of dementia by 65 per cent. Some doctors even claim that loneliness is worse for your health than smoking, being an alcoholic and being obese. TIP: Volunteer, join a group, or plan activities in advance with friends and family. Improve your blood pressure. High blood pressure in your midlife increases your risk of cognitive decline in your later years. TIP: Use medication, if prescribed, as well as lifestyle changes such as controlling your weight, your stress, getting plenty of exercise and eating right. Eat better. You are what you eat, so don’t be cheap, easy or fake and your brain will thank you for it. TIP: Eat foods on a daily basis that are rich in antioxidants, good fats, vitamins and minerals. Improve your blood sugars. Studies have shown that Type 2 diabetes can be a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and other types of dementia because cardiovascular problems associated with diabetes are also associated with dementia. TIP: Eat a healthy diet rich in vitamin D, folate, B6 and B12 vitamins, as well as exercise regularly. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer and writer. your waistline, your heart and your relationships). In a paper released on stress and the brain, the University of Washington found that stress can disturb cognitive processes so much it can affect the quality of our life while also taking years off our life. TIP: Try meditation, yoga or five minutes of daily deep breathing (come on, we all have five minutes we can spare for our brain). Break your routine. Do something outside of your comfort level. Challenge your brain with new activities. Your brain is similar to your other muscles. For example, if you were to do the same exercise program, day-in-day-out, you would stop seeing results after a period of time. This is because your muscles have become accustomed to those exercises. The same goes for the brain. So, put the crossword puzzle away (if that’s what you do everyday) and instead, learn how to use a new app on your phone, an instrument or how to program your PVR. Get some sleep. Sleep is the only time the brain has a chance to re-boot itself. It’s when we consolidate new memories and restore and recover from what has happened to us during the day. Without enough sleep, we are not able to retain what we have learned that day. TIP: Boost your sleep by turning off your electronics in the evening, performing yin yoga, meditating and getting outside during the day so your circadian rhythm is activated.

Sun Devils 2nd at provincials SDSS junior girls volleyball team concludes season in outstanding fashion MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Kevin McGregor envisioned his team’s potential a year ago. Last weekend, the South Delta Sun Devils showed their coach what they were capable of at the B.C. Junior Girls Volleyball Championships. The tournament co-host capped an outstanding season with a second place finish. South Delta went unbeaten in pool play and then rolled to playoff wins over Langley Christian, Dover Bay (Nanaimo) and MEI (Abbotsford) before capping an exhausting run with a loss to Earl Marriott in Saturday’s championship match. The silver medal was only bettered in 2011 when current UCLA sophomores Megan and Nicole McNamara led the Devils to top honours in their Grade 9 year. What makes the accomplishment even more impressive is, unlike the senior level, the B.C. Junior tourney is not tiered and features all the top schools in the province. “The one consistent message I have told these girls over the last two years is play to win. Always believe in yourself and never be afraid to make a mistake. Trust your instincts, your mechanics, what you practice and trust that at crunch time. I think that was the key to this team,” said McGregor. “They were resilient and it served them well through Fraser Valley (playoffs) and provincials.” At the conclusion of the 2015 season, McGregor looked ahead with optimism. His returning players included middle blocks Megan Hendrickson and Sarah Waterfall, power hitters Breanne Gallagher and Gemma Thomas, setter Michaela Hayes and offside hitter Olivia Wickett. Hendrickson was the team captain and lone returning starter. She also joined Gallagher and Waterfall last winter for the Club Performance program. Hayes did not start setting fulltime until last season with the Thunder Volleyball Club and the Zone 5 B.C. Summer Games team. Her impressive progress resulted in an all-star selection at the Fraser Valley Championships. She also

South Delta Sun Devils defeated defending champion Belmont in three games on their way to a second place finish at the B.C. Junior Girls Volleyball Championships. The result was only bettered in the Tsawwassen school’s history by the 2011 team that went on to dominate at the senior level. joined Gallagher as a provincial first team all-star. “This time last year I was confident there wasn’t going to be many teams in the province who could put a stronger six girls on the court,” continued McGregor. “In September, while I evaluated the new incoming Grade 9s I sent the six starters to challenge themselves at senior tryouts. They did not look out of place and held their own at the icebreaker tournament against the likes of Seaquam and Tweedsmuir’s senior teams.” South Delta ran into eventual Fraser Valley champion Pacific Academy at a pair of early season tournaments, falling to the Surrey private school in the semi-finals at Trinity Western and the quarterfinals a week later at Seaquam. Both matches went three sets. The Devils’ promise continued to show at the Handsworth Tournament in October, even
without the injured Hendrickson. The team also made the final at the Riverside Tournament before falling to the hosts, 2-1. Their post-season run was launched by defeating Seaquam in four games to win the Delta Championship. The provincials opened last Friday in front of a packed SDSS gym as the Devils outlasted defending champion Belmont of Victoria in three games. Straight set wins followed against Moscrop (Burnaby) and Westsyde (Kamloops) to send the girls off to the championship round. “The girls loved playing in front of family, friends and teachers,” added McGregor. “The strength of this team, along with their resiliency and ability to turn it on, is their passing. Without good passing the offence can’t run. Hendrickson, Gallagher and Waterfall played their consistent game but Thomas
raised her’s to another level. Her passing was outstanding and she contributed with timely hits as well. “Hendrickson, Gallagher and Thomas are the backbone of our serve receive which allows Hayes to run the offense which has many more options than most junior teams. “Gallagher is a big hitter who is not afraid to swing from the back row. Hendrickson and Waterfall are also big hitters from the middle.” Hayes battled through illness on Saturday while the team only had seven healthy players as Wickett and MacKenzie Thompson were out with injuries. Grade 9s Emma Boyes and Hillary Nelson filled in admirably for Wickett. Macy Young and Kallie O’Hearn had commitments as members of the Delta Hockey Academy girls team.

Delta Secondary swimmers showed their Pacer Pride at the recent Provincial High School Swimming Championships in Kamloops. The team of 16 swimmers all qualified for Saturday’s finals after Friday’s preliminary heats. They were expertly coached by students Maya Sato-Klemm, Conor Edgson, and Jamie Hutton — all three of which also competed, helping DSS place 24th in the team standings out of 93 participating schools. Ten of the 13 relay teams entered finished in the top 16 in the province, as did Hutton in her individual 50-metre freestyle, placing 14th with a time of 28.89 seconds. She also teamed with Maya, Kiana Sato-Klemm and Lauryn McCarthy to come eighth in both the 400-metre and the 200metre freestyle relays. Top honours went to the team of Liam Edgson,

t 71, Clarence Warde found himself living alone in his three-bedroom North Delta home. “After my wife passed away a couple of years ago, I was ready to move on,” says the retired aircraft mechanic. “However, with my son Colin and his wife living close by, I didn’t want to leave the neighbourhood. One day, Colin told me about Sunstone Village.” When Warde heard that Delsom Estates was building The Residences at Sunstone Village, a boutique-style 54-condominium building in the master planned community of Sunstone, he checked it out. “I saw the presentation centre and was very impressed with the location and the building,” says Warde. “There isn’t any reason for through df u x svfv ei qdme gcqvd~ hpce qd qpp s bv pp iu dsv services I need, all within steps of my new home.” Warde bought a two-bedroom-and-den condo ij dsv dih iif| nlsvj z hcfxs evw qj oxdi vf~ the builder hosted a meet and greet with the buyers,” he says. “There is already a sense of community here … plus staying in my neighbourhood was a real bonus.”
Warde isn’t the only one impressed. “We opened on October 1st and that same day we sold more than 60 per cent of the homes,” says Michelle Des Rosiers, senior project manager Fifth Avenue Real Estate Marketing Ltd. “It’s bvf f fv di jw xijwikqjqcke qj dsqe evddqjt in North Delta. two-bedroom homes with dens highlighted by sqts}gc pqd p kqj dv iifqjt~ yc}{v d iifqjt in ensuites and generous sized windows offering views of Sunstone Lake, the protected greenbelt, and sunsets on the Fraser River depending on the chosen home. The stylish kitchens feature Quartz countertops, Stainless steel Whirlpool appliances and double stainless steel sink. When complete, Sunstone Village will have a variety of shops and services, such as a pharmacy, and bistro, located within the heart of the community. Delsom Estates, a premiere developer with more than six decades of experience has hired an
experienced group of consultants such as Peak Construction Group of Companies to create the pedestrian-friendly village. “In the 1950s, the family bought 500 acres of land,” says Des Rosiers. “Sunstone Village is the last remaining parcel of land and one they are very proud and committed to.” Meanwhile, Delta is known for its rural charm but it boasts much more. It features several golf courses, walking and equestrian trails and great shopping. Sunstone Village is close to the popular Sungod Recreation Centre and connects to boardwalk trails in the Delta Nature Reserve and Burns Bog. These contemporary condos start from just $339,900 and prices include at least one parking stall and a storage locker. The presentation centre, 10727 Delsom Crescent, Delta, is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. (except Fridays). With fewer than eight condominiums remaining, this is the last opportunity to buy in Sunstone Village. Occupancy is expected to be summer 2018. ANNOUNCEMENTS

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron Schneider. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jane, children Ralph, Ken (Barb), and Alisa (Mark), sister Martha Jackie, grandchildren Katie and Libby, Isaac and Andrew and their mother Brenda, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ron valued family above all else. He was a man of quiet faith and enjoyed being involved in the Evangelical Church for the majority of his years. He had a keen interest in music and loved to play the guitar. Over the years he made 12 acoustic guitars. He helped many neighbours with various projects and as an avid gardener, showed them how to grow delicious tomatoes. Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, December 3rd at 1:00pm followed by a lunch, Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road. Ladner. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
