Birthday wish does come true

Calgary couple overwhelmed by public’s support after stolen trailer recovered in Tsawwassen IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

It’s a 29th birthday that Raph Gagnon will never forget. Raph, along with her husband Mark, saw their dreams and livelihood vanish in an instant when their apothecary trailer was stolen from the Tsawwassen ferry terminal last weekend. But the Calgary couple’s faith in human-

ity was restored when the trailer was found Wednesday night. “The CBC got in contact with me and I was on the 6 p.m. news Wednesday night. Five minutes after our story aired, we received a call and someone had recognized the trailer that had been sitting for a few days in a parking lot in Tsawwassen,” Raph said. “We drove out with the police and, sure enough, it was our

trailer.” Delta police confirmed the trailer was found at the Tsatsu Shores condo development near the ferry terminal. “A resident noticed it in the parking lot on Monday,” said Sharlene Brooks, public affairs coordinator for the Delta police. The trailer is now in the hands of forensic investigators, Brooks said.

The Gagnons are owners of Boreal Folk Apothecary, which specializes in natural skincare products made from wild plants. They have been travelling across Canada to craft shows, including one in Victoria last weekend. TRAILER: see Page 3 SUBMITTED PHOTO

Flipped semi snarls traffic Highway 17 closed for 16 hours after accident Tuesday afternoon near mall IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A five-vehicle accident, including a flipped semi-truck, tied up traffic for more than 16 hours on Highway 17 late in Tsawwassen this week. RCMP and Delta police were called to the scene at Highway 17 near 52nd Street just after 4 p.m. Tuesday. “There were a number of witnesses and video evidence and our initial investigation suggests the semi-truck driver may have gone through a red light,” said RCMP Const. Melissa Wutke. “I have no

were taken to hospital as a precaution. Two were treated for minor injuries and all have been released. Highway 17 was closed in both directions and 52nd Street was blocked

on both sides of the highway, forcing traffic, including vehicles headed to and from the ferry terminal, to be diverted. The accident scene was finally cleared and the

highway re-opened fully to traffic around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. “The truck was fully loaded with food products and frozen, so it took a long time to unload to get to the point where they could remove the truck,” added Wutke. According to BC Ferries, the accident had little impact on the ferry terminal. “With the detour in place, the tower controllers gave an extension for reservation cut off, but other than that, motorists were managing the issue,” said BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall.

Run for One Planet cofounders Matt Hill and Stephanie Tait were honoured with the Meritorious Service Medal last week at a ceremony in Edmonton. Hill and Tait, who both grew up in Tsawwassen, completed a year-long run across Canada and around the perimeter of the United States in 2009 to promote environmental action. “You never do something because you think you’re going to get honoured. You do something because you care about what it is you’re doing,” said Hill, 48. Governor General David

Johnston presented honours to the pair along with 70 other Canadians at the Shaw Conference Centre last Thursday. projects, running almost a marathon each day on the journey. Their route took them from Vancouver to St. John’s, down to Florida and across the continent to California before returning to B.C. Tait previously told the Optimist they chose to stick to North America because the continent has long been known as one of the worst polluters in the world and it has the most potential to bring about change. Their big goal was to inspire the whole continent to make one small change to help the planet, Hill said, adding he still gives talks about the issue and brings the same message.

Trailer stolen from long-term parking lot at ferry terminal

CONTINUED from Page 1 Because the van and trailer are 40 feet in length when combined, they decided to leave the trailer in the long-term parking lot at the ferry terminal. They locked and secured

it Friday night, but when they returned Sunday it was gone. Their story has been shared by numerous media outlets, including the Optimist, and through social media. A gofundme-

page was set up to provide financial support. Raph said all donations raised through that page will be returned to the donors. Two motorbikes, a generator and a copper still

used to distill essential oils were stolen, but none of the plants and flowers were taken. “We’re so thankful that everyone shared our story and were so concerned,” said Raph.

Delta police K-9 unit apprehends Grinch

A would-be thief in Ladner was no match for a Delta police K-9 unit this week. With the Christmas shopping season in full swing, police are reminding shoppers to lock their vehicles and keep valuables and Christmas purchases out of sight from thieves. “Any items in your car are unfortunately an invite to the Grinches that lurk about to steal from you,” said a release on the Delta Police Department Facebook page. “We are out there 24/7, but can’t be all places at once, so let’s work together. Call us if you see anyone that

appears suspicious in your neighbourhoods and hopefully we can get the Grinch(s) in custody.” Thanks to alert citizens, the police, along with a K-9 unit, did just that last Sunday. Citizens reported males trying doors of vehicles in the South Delta area. “While DPD (including a K-9) officers were responding, more information came from a citizen letting police know that two males stole their neighbour’s truck. Police saw the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but it fled ending up down a dead-end street.” Police found the vehicle

Delta police are asking the public for help locating a vehicle of interest that might be tied to an Oct. 24 shooting in North Delta. At approximately 11:15 a.m. on Oct. 24, police responded to a report of shots fired in the 9200block of Scott Road. Officers arrived on scene and found a lone male victim who had been shot, said Sharlene Brooks, Delta police public affairs coordinator. The 25-yearold was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his lower body.

After a stop at the hospital for some stitches, Grinch was released on a promise to appear in court.” Recommended charges might include: theft from auto, possession of stolen property, flight from police and obstruction.

All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner will be celebrating its 135th anniversary Sunday with a special event. The church will be having a service of Lessons and Carols that will include the sealing of a time capsule. Among the items to be included in the time capsule will be a photo from 100 years ago that shows the congregation gathered on the church steps, a modern recreation of that photo, a couple of bulletins, a list of couples married this year and a copy of the Optimist, said parish administrator Flower Pearson. “We just realized things are changing quite rapidly around us and we hope that the time capsule will show that this part of Ladner has kind of stayed the same,” she said. “When people come into this church they say, ‘Oh, it’s

to encourage people to come and adopt,” said shelter manager Sarah Jones. “Adopting a cat in their golden years is an important decision, so we also want to ensure that the adoption is approved by those receiving this Christmas gift.” Jones said there are also plenty of other wonderful animals available for

adoption at the shelter, 7505 Hopcott Rd., for a reduced fee. Visit the shelter and if you see a Santa sticker on their kennel, adoption fees are half off or more. Murphy’s Law

I

TED MURPHY

n this day and age of rampant growth in the Lower Mainland, particularly south of the Fraser, it’s hard to believe we’d consider spending tax dollars to replace a four-lane bridge with another four-lane bridge. I’m referring to the recent unveiling of the Mayors’ Council’s 10-Year Vision, which includes a plan to swap the aging four-lane Pattullo Bridge for a new fourlane tolled Pattullo Bridge. I realize we’re not going to build our way out of congestion with more asphalt, but to think that bridge capacity from the 1930s will somehow be sufficient well into the 21st century defies logic. Considering Surrey’s population has tripled in the last 30 years to more than half a million and projections have over 800,000 people calling that city home by 2046, it’s hard to fathom why we’d entertain the idea of building a bridge with the same capacity as one that opened way back in 1937. It would be akin to spending billions to replace the George Massey Tunnel with another four-lane crossing. Your commute would continue to get longer, but, hey, it would make for a safer trip across the river. If the Pattullo was in good shape and could serve motorists for decades to come, then there would be no pressing need to replace it. But if that’s not the case and you’re going to expend the cash to build a new bridge, then why not take advantage of the opportunity and increase capacity to accommodate a growing area? I recognize that more dollars must be invested in transit, particularly that of the rapid variety, but it should be noted that the SkyTrain bridge you can see from the Pattullo hasn’t eliminated the need for passenger vehicles in that part of the region. Transportation planning can often be a political exercise, and it appears there’s a desire on both sides of the river not to invite more traffic into that area, but the reality is that an ever-growing volume will have to go somewhere, and a good chunk of it will find its way to the two river crossings in Delta. Every jurisdiction should do its part when it comes to getting people from Point A to Point B in the Lower Mainland, and that’s especially true for those responsible for generating all those extra vehicles.

Diverse arts community has long, proud history in Delta

T

hose of you who have read one or more of my past columns are aware of my penchant for writing about organizations and individuals who have made a positive difference in our community. As to why I venture in that direction is perhaps due to four generations of my family’s involvement in political, cultural and community service. In saying this, there is nothing unique about this experience as many “old timers” have similar linkage to past and current generations who have influenced our present culture. Perhaps the only difference is I have the privilege of expounding in this medium of earlier times and events. The longer I remain in this municipality, the more I respect the influence of past generations on our present lifestyle. Volunteerism has been a major factor in shaping Delta’s generous spirit and giving nature. The thrust of these comments are in recognition of the talent displayed by early settlers and finding time and passion for the arts, crafts, music and culture. Within a decade of incorporation, Delta was known for its number of excellent brass bands, particularly in Ladner and Crescent Island, which participated in community parades, festivals and concerts. The popularity

Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND

of these early bands for over 50 years was heightened during two world wars. Churches and community centres were then and remain repositories for art and cultural events. There was little cohesion in Delta’s arts community until the years following the opening of the George Massey Tunnel and a dramatic increase in population. In 1968, the volunteer leaders of various art groups met in the home of Raine Leigh, a wellknown artist and long-time art teacher at Ladner Secondary. I’m told that former mayor Dugald Morrison, Pat Rogers, Robbi Schultes and brothers Herb and Boyd Ivens were at the meeting along with others but time is a disadvantage to memory so please forgive my lack of more names. It was agreed by those present to a merger of art forms under

the umbrella organization of the Delta Community Arts Council. Led by Leigh, this organization was chartered as a society in 1969. The arts council was home to one of the largest organizations connecting Delta’s three communities and hosting local district and regional activity for some 30 art mediums, quilters, potters, painters, music makers and theatre, to name a few. These diverse interests, along with the support from Delta in allocating space for functions and meetings, made for a period of robust activity. As with all volunteer organizations, there were highs and lows along with fundraising issues and overhead, and in the recent past the arts council phased itself out of its mandate. The Corporation of Delta has replaced the arts council and provides oversight and staff for facilities and promotional advertising for events and activities. The various groups are reportedly functioning well under the umbrella of civic government. It’s good to recognize a half century of talent, leadership and volunteerism under the purview of the Delta Community Arts Council and the flourishing of art and culture under its watch. A Merry Christmas to all, and a good night to Pat and Patti. A fourth generation Ladnerite, Doug Husband is a former mayor of Delta.

Greater Vancouver should follow Portland where car’s losing clout

Editor: Wow, another day with the Alex Fraser Bridge closed due to ice bombs; glad we got that lousy old George Massey Tunnel still squeezing traffic through it. We have rush hour gridlock like every metro area

in the world. So what? If you don’t like it, move, get in a carpool or, better yet, let’s improve our public transit system and stop building more roads. Take a drive down to Portland and go explore how their metro area is working on their public

transit and bike route network and you’ll wonder why we can’t do the same thing here. Portland seems to be creating connected communities without requiring you to get into your vehicle to do practically everything. You have choices for

modes of transportation and the car seems to be losing its clout once you’re off the I-5 or 205. Kudos to metro Portland for having the political courage and smarts, transforming itself away from the almighty car. Randy Roper

Recreational facility users in South Delta should get similar deal offered to those in North Delta

Editor: So what gives with the Experience North Delta Recreation Centre pass promotion? How come North Delta gets an updated sports facility plus 60 per cent off their admission rates at this facility

for up to one year whilst South Delta gets nothing? Surely if Delta can afford to subsidize admissions in North Delta, it only seems fair that it does the same for the rest of the Delta. Also, can you explain why Deltans pay so much

more for sports facilities than other municipalities? For example, in Langley, seniors can get a one-year pass for $341 vs $450 in Delta. That’s 33 per cent more for Deltans. Since it’s the Christmas season, maybe the

Corporation of Delta could treat South Delta to similar savings to those being enjoyed by North Deltans. We all live in the same municipality and we should all be treated fairly and in the same way. Richard Heath

New president will right past wrongs, restoring U.S. to former status Editor: Re: Point Roberts resident apologizes for election result, letter to the editor, Dec. 14 Suzanne Rosser is indeed correct in stating

something has gone wrong with her country, except, in my humble opinion, it started eight years ago with the election of a far left, amateurish Chicago community organizer.

Although Donald Trump is a narcissist beyond belief, I am proud the American electorate finally voted to rid themselves of the Clinton/ Obama disaster.

We love and have great respect for our friends in the U.S. and with your new leadership, you will once again regain your place as the world leader. P. Rowlands

Senior, (Approximately 10 years old)

This sweet, shy girl was surrendered to the shelter and is looking for a calm, consistent household where she can settle in without too much change or excitement. Katie lived with another cat (her sibling) and is used to being an indoor/outdoor cat. Katie was previously having some accidents outside of her litter box and it was determined that she had a urinary tract infection. We have switched her to a urinary diet and she hasn’t had any accidents here at the shelter. We feel that a low stress home with no other animals would be ideal for her. Katie is a shy wall flower but if given time and attention she really blooms. She loves to rub against your hand and receive chin rubs. We believe that once in a home, her true sweet personality will shine through. Katie loves to curl up on a lap and appreciates being brushed. She’ll even kneed and drool after a few minutes of attention! Do you have the retirement home Katie needs?

Residents and commercial property owners have been getting the message to clear sidewalks of snow and ice during the recent winter storms. According to the Corporation of Delta’s snow removal policies, all snow from sidewalks located adjacent to properties must be cleared within 24 hours to ensure the safety of pedestrians. “If they do have a sidewalk in front, they do have a responsibility to keep it clear and maintained,” said acting director of engineering Hugh Fraser. “To the business property owners we handed out an information reminder letter. In general it has been pretty good. In Ladner, the downtown core looks good. We’ve only had one or two complaints that I know of.” Residents who have difficulty keeping their sidewalks and driveways clear of snow can take advantage of Delta’s Snow Angels program. The world has already received the greatest gift ever given, the perfect gift. The One who has opened the door to reconciliation and right relationship between us and God. What better way to express the depth of our gratitude for such a gift than to bless those in great need through the riches that we already possess? In this poignant time of the year scripture asks the question again, “How does God’s love abide in anyone who has the world’s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses to help?” (1 John 3: 17) May you experience the joy of giving gifts that make a difference this Christmas.

Still looking for that perfect gift? That just right thing for somebody that already has everything they need? Over the past three weeks our outreach committee at Tsawwassen United has promoted an idea for us to consider thoughtfully: why we give gifts and what impact our gifts have on the receiver. It is not a new thing but it is slowly gaining momentum. The idea of granting a gift of livestock to a family in the developing countries of our world, livestock (goats or chickens) that can produce healthy and sustained food sources or a financial base for families living in poverty or rebuilding from

AND HAPPY NEW YEAR

“The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society is vitally important to our community. Founded nearly fifty years ago, the Auxiliary has led the charge on enormously successful fundraising campaigns, contributing millions of dollars to Delta Hospital. The thrift store and the café do double duty in providing a service to residents while helping to fund the auxiliary’s activities. We owe a debt of gratitude to the Auxiliary for our extended and acute care units, as well as all the equipment and programs which they help make a reality. If Delta Hospital is part of the fabric that holds the community together, then the Auxiliary is the thread that keeps Delta Hospital together. The Auxiliary’s presence in the community is unmatched, and I am grateful for their work.”

The Delta Hospital Auxiliary has been raising funds for hospital equipment and helping comfort patients for as long as I can remember. Their volunteers run the Gift Shop, Thrift Store and the annual Christmas Shop as well as help at the Hospital and Mountain View Manor on a variety of patient needs. The countless hours they put in help raise funds to ensure our hospital has the latest and best in equipment. It is always a pleasure to work with the Auxiliary and help them in any way we can.

Owen Pighin has once again got into the Christmas spirit and put up thousands of lights for his display in Tsawwassen.

Ladner brother and sister team have put together a Christmas lights display highlighted by numerous wood cutouts of Peanuts and Disney characters. Dylan and Asia Mattu have been doing the cutouts for the last seven or eight years and each Christmas they try to expand their holiday setup at 4686-62nd St. with something new and challenging. This time around they added an It’s a Small World façade complete with lights and characters. “We got really ambitious with wanting to make something bigger,” says Asia, 25. They tackled that project after being inspired during their latest trip to Disneyland, says Dylan, 21, adding they were aiming to do something classic that everyone could enjoy. They work together to create the plywood cutouts.

“I do the cutting and she does the artwork,” says Dylan. “It’s a good partnership there,” says Asia, adding her brother is able to figure out where everything goes and engineers how to install the cutouts so they don’t get blown away by wind. Some of their earlier work has made way for new additions. They do get complimentary comments from passersby while out working on their display. “We have a lot of fun doing it, and the fact that other people are enjoying what we’re doing, that just, to me, makes it worth it,” says Asia. - Tsawwassen’s Owen Pighin always has a game plan for setting up his thousands of Christmas lights each year at 476 Milsom Wynd. He typically spends about an hour a day putting up lights, plugging away over the course of two weeks to complete the display. Getting the roof done early is part of the plan for the display, which includes about 32,000

Additional lights have been added once again, says Pighin, who coaches the Delta Wild hockey academy’s U18 girls team. “I keep adding every year,” he says, noting he also changes the colour scheme annually. He sticks to lights for his display. He uses flashing laser lights as accents for some trees and walls. “It just makes it a little bit more Christmas-y.” Pighin says people often ask why he does the display. “Honestly, it’s nice to have for the season and do

it for anyone who likes to be involved in the season. I think it helps bring the spirit of Christmas.” - Meiric Preece’s big addition to his Christmas lights display at 5374-46th Ave. in Ladner is Santa Claus with his sleigh and four reindeer on the roof. The recently retired engineer cut plywood based on a pattern he ordered to create the new feature. His wife Kathy did all the painting for it. “It’s turned out really well,” says Preece. One of the tricky parts was mounting the new feature on the ridge of

roof, he says, adding he’s using a 50-pound bag of sand as a weight to hold it in place. He’s also added more lights to the display, which he spent an estimated 100 hours overall working on this year. Preece says the display is just something they enjoy doing and notes their granddaughters, ages 6, 4 and 2, were visiting from out of town this year and got to see the lights. Here is a list of some Christmas light displays around South Delta: Tsawwassen • 5200 and 5300 blocks of Camaro Drive • 367-55A Street • 5963-16th Avenue • 476 Milsom Wynd • 5244 Upland Place • 5520-6th Avenue Ladner • 4600 and 4700 blocks of 55A Street • 4686-62nd Street • 5152-45th Avenue • 5160-45th Avenue • 4858-57th Street • 5374-46th Avenue • 5856-50th Avenue

Meditation can help unlock your creativity

Quieting the mind with simple 10-minute exercise will help ideas grow from your creative side

An Art-full Life

MEG & MARY ANN

To stop the mind from operating on auto-pilot and expand, we need to find the time for quiet. The practice of meditation is over 2,500 years old. Meditation can not only reduce stress, improve health, enhance performance and make us happier, it can also make us more creative. If you are diligent and consistent in your efforts, it will reveal its true essence and can literally transform your life and your creative mind. Here are 10 scientifically proven benefits of meditation: 1. Overcome

stress (University of Massachusetts Medical School, 2003) 2. Boost your creativity (ScienceDaily, 2010) 3. Improve your sex life and increase your libido (The Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2009) 4. Cultivate healthy habits that lead to weight loss (Journal Emotion, 2007) 5. Improve digestion and lower blood pressure (Harvard Medical School) 6. Decrease your risk of heart attack (The Stroke Journal, 2009) 7. Help overcome anxiety, depression, anger and confusion (Psychosomatic Medicine, 2009) 8. Decrease perception of pain and improve cognitive processing (Wake Forest University School of Medicine, 2010) 9. Increase your focus and attention (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 2007) 10. Increase the size of your most important organ — your brain! (Harvard University Gazette, 2006)

STOCK PHOTO MEME CREATION BY MARY ANN BURROWS

Meditation quiets the mind and can lead to creativity. If you are a beginner, however, it can be challenging to sit still. Meditation can also be boring, but the trick to realizing its benefits is in hanging in there and practicing daily in the midst of a hectic life. Here is a basic, yet very effective and short meditation exercise that everyone can do in just 10 minutes a day: 1. Find a comfortable, quiet position on the floor, on a pillow, lying down or sitting in a chair. The most important thing is that your spine is straight.

2. If you like to have music that’s perfectly fine. 3. Keep your eyes slightly open at first, gaze downward, to a spot on the floor four to six feet in front of you. Your gaze is soft and you are taking everything in, but seeing nothing. 4. Jaw is relaxed, mouth closed, lips slightly parted, shoulders and belly relaxed 5. As you sit, pay attention to your breathing, listen to your breath. Notice it but don’t concentrate on anything in particular. 6. Let your thoughts come and go, allow them

but don’t grab on to them. If you find yourself paying attention to your thoughts, simply say to yourself, “That’s interesting.” And bring your mind back to your breath. 7. Sit and observe, without judgement, or attachment the ideas and thoughts that flow through your mind, giving things a chance to pay and always watching, never forcing, over-thinking or manipulating your ideas. This exercise benefits everyone. Whether you have been creating for years, or just starting out, this is the single most important exercise that you can do to support, nourish and grow your creativeness. It costs you absolutely nothing but 10 minutes of your time a day. In your quiet mind, ideas grow. They are captured by you and explored. Sitting in quietness allows us to go down into our mind, where the real creative core sits. When we sit

back and allow the mind to eliminate the overthinking and useless info that we all hold onto, it makes room for the new ideas from our wild creative side to come forward, be nourished and grow into ideas. Once you have finished your exercise, grab a pen and paper and write down what you saw. Somedays it will be nothing. Somedays it will be everything. Please send us a note in a few weeks to let us know if this practice helped your creativeness. Send it to maryannb@eastlink.ca or Meg@alongsideyou.ca. Meg Neufeld is a cultural anthropologist, practicing mixed-media artist and program director at Alongside You, a health organization that offers a multi-disciplinary approach to health. Traipsing through Malaysia’s Terengganu JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

Where the heck is Kuala Terengganu? Although it took me only a few hours to get my bearings in this quintessentially Malaysian fishing town, I still have yet to say it correctly. With or without the proper pronunciation, it’s well worth the visit. Malaysia’s state of Terengganu caresses the country’s east coast, and is blessed with a wealth of natural treasures ranging from exotic beaches to lush tropical groves. The South China Sea washes up onto its 225 kilometers of sandy shores, and centrally perched is the coastal capital of Kuala Terengganu. Sandwiched between the Terengganu River and the deep blue sea is the emergence of the city’s slow growing hub. In spite of the occasional high rise, the pace remains at a plod and the people are polite. “There’s very little crime here,” our guide, Raja, reassures. “No pickpocketing, just peace-loving,” he

chuckles. Our first stop, while traipsing the hot spots, is the Pasar Payang (central market), where every square inch is crammed with textiles and handicrafts. “Bartering is totally expected,” Raja pre-warns. “Thirty per cent off the marked price is possible and 40 is a steal. If you smile, you may even get more.” We tromp the pencil thin corridors where dazzling silks, songkets (fabric for wedding gear), brass wares and rattan spill from vendor stalls, then mosey around mounds of mangoes, papaya and indigenous prickly-skinned durian that emit a pungent scent. “Tastes like heaven, smells like hell,” we are told by a man old enough to be my great grandfather. Crossing streets in Malaysia’s busier cities can be a bit like playing Russian roulette but we discover the threeblock jaunt from this bargain lover’s bazaar to Chinatown haunts is literally a breeze.

Bartering is expected in the markets of Terengganu. Ancient shop houses teeter like drunken soldiers while hugging up to alleyways no wider than glorified bike paths. And

beneath their dominating colonial archways are shuttered windows that peer onto hoards of historical relics.

Ho Ann Kiong Temple is one of the alluring artifacts that we explore. Beneath a pagoda-shaped roof, the intricately carved shrine is aglow with small lights and vibrant red lanterns. Here, incense burns and prayer is received. Although the temple has required rebuilding over the years, it has exemplified the Chinese culture since its original structure in 1801. Another lesson in history is provided during our visit to the Terengganu State Museum. The complex sprawls over 27 lush hectares and takes the prize for being one of the largest in Southeast Asia. A few kilometers away at the Sutera Semai Centre, meters of detailed fabrics scallop the ceiling like colourful schooner sails and beneath the billowing swaths artists are hard at work in a design process that has stood the test of time. “Outlines are etched in pencil,” we are informed, “and after being traced with wax, the dye is applied.”

Although the craft of batik is a lot more complex than paint by number, the artists have the proficient knack of quickly transforming a bolt of raw silk into florally patterned shirts, scarves and handkerchiefs. We can’t escape without purchasing at least one of each. Our final stop, and literally high point of the day, is the 200-metre hike to the historical Bukit Puteri fortress where we’re provided with a panorama that encompasses the city limits and outlying tropical islets. Kuala Terengganu is a destination that offers a wealth of culture, a variety of landscapes and some mighty fine shopping. And after a day of traipsing the hot spots we discover it’s definitely worth a visit, whether you pronounce it properly or not. 1599 CAD gets you a balcony stateroom aboard the gorgeous ms NoorCo-Founder dam on the first roundtrip Vancouver sailing of the year & President, on April 30, 2017. Our price includes a $350 US per stateroom CruisePlus onboard credit and taxes – which is a great deal. I can’t promise this to you, but I did a sailing a few years ago that left April 28 and we had the most incredible weather – often you can be very pleasantly surprised on how nice early departures can be. Ask us about all the Alaska 2017 cruise and land tour options – the best cruise is a 14 night sailing out of Seattle going far north up to Kodiak. Today is my last day of advertorials until the New Year - but we’ve got plenty of consultants around and some fabulous additional booking incentives throughout December combining Holland America’s View and Verandah sale, a private CruisePlus sale and our CruisePlus Rewards Platinum pricing on hundreds of sailings. Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Einstein is quoted as having said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. This saying begs the question: Why do people still continue to do abdominal crunches and expect a six-pack and a functional midsection in return? If crunches were the answer to a toned tummy, all of us would have them. But alas we don’t, do we? Canada is currently sitting at a 54 per cent overweight and obesity rate (Stats Can 2014) — with a lot of that fat around our bellies. Something is clearly not working with all these crunches that we have been doing.

First off, let’s review why abdominal crunches don’t work. Number one: you can’t spot train. This simply means that you cannot take a certain section of your body, like your abs, and perform repetitions isolating that muscle group in hopes of decreasing the size of that body part. You can try all you want. Heck, you can even stare at your belly while you are doing your crunches and yell at it, but it still won’t work. Why? Well, basic physiology tells us that fat is utilized as a fuel source, and when we need that fuel we start burning it from various locations throughout the body. Not from one certain location. So you cannot burn fat from one particular area. Instead, you’ve got to keep working at training your whole body and slowly the fat in the area you want reduced will start to go away (that is, of course, if you are eating properly too). Number two: while one of the functions the abdominals provide our body is flexing the spine, that flexing activity (which

is essentially what you do when you perform a crunch or a curl-up) is not functional at all. Think about it. How often do you actually roll the spine, while on your back, on a day-to-day basis? I can think of one time and one time only — and that’s to get out of bed in the morning. While the thought of perfecting that movement is great, it’s not really what I think a lot of us have in mind when we go to the gym. The abdominals are actually used (during our waking hours) as stabilizers to the spine. Now, please understand that I am being very general here. The abs are also used throughout the day for twisting, bending, assistance on breathing and so forth, but if you were to break down, percentage wise, what the abdominal muscles did during most of our waking hours, the clear winner would be to stabilize and assist our spine and our posture. Taking that into consideration, you can now see why an abdominal crunch will not help you out in

daily living. And crunches provide even less help in sport. More preferable exercises are ones that lengthen the body and then use the abdominals to hold that position — such as planks, push-ups, mountain climbers or boat pose. We also need exercises that ask the abdominals to assist in stabilizing the spine, such as squats, deadlifts, lunges, pull-ups and power cleans. And finally, we need exercises in our routine that also engage the rotational and twisting ability of our midsection. These include reverse woodchops, anti-rotational movements with tubing or the Rip Trainer, and Russian twists with the medicine ball. And last, but not least, if getting rid of that fat is what you really want to do, then you need to take a long, hard look at what you are eating. Great looking abs are actually cooked in the kitchen first and then trained in the gym. PJ Wren is a local fitness trainer and writer. Victory over Grandview was Delta’s 15th in 20 games as it takes over conference lead MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

“I know their capabilities and our upside is going to be really big. The first 10 games are really just a feel out and I think we are going to shoot the moon.” It seemed like a rather bold prediction three months ago with his team hovering at .500 but Darren Naylor wasn’t kidding. Since making that long range forecast, the Delta Ice Hawks have been on a tear — winning 16 of their last 20 games. Tuesday’s 3-1 victory over the Grandview Steelers moved them into sole possession of top spot in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference. It was their sixth straight win and their 20th of the season (20-9-0), matching their entire output of a year ago with still 15 games remaining. “We have been chasing those guys all year since they started out 9-0. It was a huge win for us,” said Naylor. “Our kids are coming together and have been getting better and better. There are little things I’m noticing like our positional play and other things I’m happy with. “I’m happy with the win but even more happy with the way they dominated in a 2-1, 3-1 game.” Since stepping behind the bench late last season, Naylor has instilled an uptempo system that demands all five players are responsible for each end of the ice. The Hawks are no longer plagued by costly defensive lapses or taking undisciplined penalties that were all too frequent the past couple of seasons. Naylor has also leaned on his minor hockey coaching background and familiarity of the 1999 age class to stockpile some tenacious speed-to-burn forwards such as Tyson Lin, Henry Rhyu,

Delta Ice Hawks Mark Trotman causes havoc in the Grandview goal crease during Tuesday’s 3-1 win. Tetsuya Prior, Alex Suprynowicz and Jonathan Stein. It was Stein who buried an allimportant insurance goal from Prior with just over three minutes remaining. The Hawks enjoyed a comfortable edge in territorial play but Steelers goalie Matteo PalerChow was able to keep his team within striking distance. “I just finished telling them this was a playoff type game where it’s 2-1 and you got to be mistake free

and do the simple things,” Naylor continued. “I thought we were the better team and really shut the door on them.” When opponents aren’t dealing with the Ice Hawks’ dangerous transition game, they are trying to figure out how to slow down towering power wingers Mark Trotman and Brad Crompton who are thriving playing on a line with centre Daniel Rubin. The trio combined for five points in last Saturday’s 5-2

win at Port Moody and were dangerous much of the night against Grandview. “They are such big bodies to deal with and can just dominate,” smiled Naylor. “They can just grind you down.” The Hawks will play their final game before the holiday break next Wednesday when Abbotsford visits Ladner at 7:35 p.m. The Pilots are the only team Delta has yet to beat this season.

South Delta Minor’s Party In Da House tourney starts Saturday South Delta Minor Hockey is getting the party started early this holiday season. The association’s 13th annual Party In Da House Tournament gets underway on Saturday and will conclude Tuesday with the four championship games at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

This popular and fun event, founded by Theresa Watts, is exclusive to South Delta House level and girls teams. Bragging rights for the four divisions are determined and the winners will move on to play North Delta Minor Hockey representatives in the new year for the

Delta Cup. The breakdown of participating teams this year includes: Midget Division (four), Bantam Division (six), Pee Wee Division (five) Atom Division (four). Round-robin games will take place in Ladner and Tilbury Arena. The LLC will also host

a Skills Competition for Atom (12:30 p.m.) and Pee Wee (2 p.m.) players on Sunday, followed by a Coaches Game at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday’s championship game schedule will unfold as follows: Atom (3 p.m.), Pee Wee (4:40 p.m.), Bantam (6:20 p.m.) and Midget (8:15 p.m.).

South Delta Kyokushin Karate Club came away with some excellent results at its first competition of the season — the Van Cup at BCIT. In Non-Contact Kumite, Peyton Brosinski (76 lbs and over) and Luca Goyal (55-75 lbs) both finished first in their respective divisions. They also competed in Knockdown (Full Contact) Kumite where Brosinski was third in his 91-100 lb. class, while Goyal earned bronze in the 61-70 lb. class. Also doing a fine job representing the club were Avani Johal and Ian Sinclair.

JAGTIANI, Shirley February 10, 1930 - December 9, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Shirley Marjorie Jagtiani (nee Towers) passed away at Delta Hospital with family and friends at her side. Shirley was born on a cattle ranch in Cochrane, Alberta, where she lived with her father and mother Harold & Dorothy Towers and two sisters. Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband Gangu Jagtiani (2014) and her older sisters Kay Hawkins and Betty Joy. Shirley is survived by her son Rick (Linda) Ashmore of Fort Erie, Ont. and daughter Laurie-Lee (Jack) Anderson of Ladner; grandchildren Shawn (Dana) Ashmore, Aaron (Zoë) Ashmore, Robyn (Ben) Ingram, and Devon (Chad) Stanley.

LAVOIE ~ Annette Louise (nee Gibbs)

“If you have ever lost a loved one, then you know exactly how it feels. And if you have not, then you cannot possibly imagine it.” Lemony Snicket

It was three years ago on a snowy December 20 that you had to leave us after fighting cancer for years, first breast cancer, and then brain cancer. You fought hard against both and suffered greatly to stay with your family, but in the end the cancer stole you from us. “Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, which I find myself constantly walking around in the daytime, and falling in at night. I miss you like hell.” Edna St. Vincent Millay

Shirley’s love for her family was foremost in her life and she was blessed to become a Great Grandma this summer. First to Esmé Ashmore and Smith Stanley. She also leaves behind her one nephew, numerous nieces and cousins, and many wonderful friends that she loved like family. Shirley worked in many different sales jobs, which included a career in the carpet industry. She could often be found walking her two precious dogs, Halle and Mai Tai in Ladner. Shirley was also a talented artist and took great pleasure in her weekly art classes with Michael Duncan and friends. There are many people that we would like to thank for all the cards, phone calls and visits that they shared with Mom. Also the family would like to thank, Dr. Ruth Turnbull and the Nursing Staff at Delta Hospital. You all showed our Mom such loving care.

“You are in our hearts forever, Mom” MITCHELL, Melvin (Butch) Carl April 9, 1944 - December 8, 2016
