The East Delta Hall looked more like Santa’s workshop last week judging by the huge amount of toys it contained. Deltassist’s annual Toy Depot took place over the course of three days and helped make Christmas brighter for hundreds of local kids from lowincome homes. “When it comes to Christmas, the community is the heart of this, the volunteers are the heart of this,” says Deltassist manager of operation and projects Lorraine Yates. She estimates approximately 900 children received toys from this year’s program. The Toy Depot would look much different without volunteers, she says, noting they help make it so clients feel like they’re coming in to a warm and inviting environment. Volunteers help transport toys to the East Delta Hall, work on the setup and give assistance to clients selecting gifts.

Delta firefighters are huge supporters of the Toy Depot, donating time, money and brawn to the cause. Yates estimates volunteers put in over 1,000 hours to help Deltassist’s Christmas programs. Local firefighters, including Delta Firefighters Charitable Society director Ben Lewis,

were at the East Delta Hall helping during the setup day for the Toy Depot. “It’s the time of the year where people want to be giving. Absolutely we’re always on board in helping facilitate that,” he says,

noting the society contributed over $10,000 generated from a North Delta Christmas lights event to Deltassist’s Christmas programs this year. “It’s a good time of year to remind yourself that

people need help yearround.” The toys at the Toy Depot come from around the community, including the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall’s Stockings for Kids program.

A Christmas Season thank you

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 289 and Angela Hurst of Talking Heads Salon join together to thank the community for supporting this year’s Toy Drive for Deltassist. The popular event took place December 3rd at the Legion with music provided by Keilhole, Chaos Monkeys, Rhythm Rush, Southside Vibe, West of Memphis and All the Kings men. All the bands took time out of their busy schedules to donate their time to the cause making it a great night for music lovers. Special thanks to the businesses that kindly donated to our silent auction and we are please to announce that the evening raised close to $5000 plus many wonderful toys donated by people in attendance. Christmas will be extra special for some children thanks to everyone involved.

Food donations from local schools were at the warehouse by the start of Monday, he says. “We also got in and were able to get the warehouse set up with the boxes, and everything laid out. We were really efficient this year,” he says.

The retired police officer also says it was really encouraging to see youth getting involved with the program. Deltassist’s Lorraine Yates says service club volunteers run all over the place picking up food donations, put together the hampers and make financial contributions as well. “They’re behind the scenes all the time,” she says. In addition to the distributed hampers, there are also “sponsored hampers,” she notes, adding those are brought in by sponsors and then picked up by the recipient family.

Ladner looking to regain crown in annual Christmas Bird Count At 143 species, local count was tops in Canada two years ago SANDOR GYARMATI

The long-running Ladner Christmas Bird Count will be held next Tuesday. Open to all experienced birders as well as those just looking for an enjoyable outdoor activity during the holiday season, the count also includes areas of Tsawwassen, south Richmond and Point Roberts. It’s part of the regional Christmas Bird Count, which is part of a much larger count across the continent. Counts happen in over 2,000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere It’s the 117th year for the counts, an ongoing project of the National Audubon Society in the United States and coordinated in Canada by Bird Studies Canada. Each Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5. Counts are carried out within a 24-kilometre diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. Due to lousy weather, the Ladner Christmas Bird Count last year had the number of bird species spotted at 133. Victoria was tops that year, recording 141 species. The previous year, the Ladner count had a final number of 143 bird species, tops in

Dimitri

Californian Rabbit, White with Black, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 3 years old) Dimitri came to the shelter as a stray, running around a neighbourhood with his lady friend Anastasia. We believe the two were likely a breeding pair. Californian rabbits can live up to 10 years and grow to be 8-12 lbs! Dimitri’s favourite thing to do is flop flat out with his legs stretched out behind him. This beautiful boy is also completely 100% litter box trained (urine and stool!) His calm Californian nature makes him a lovely bunny to be around! Dimitri developed a “wobble” in January 2016 – after an intense series of tests and medications it’s suspected that he has a primary neurologic/balance disorder and needs an extra special rabbit home. He is currently only on pain medication (Metacam that he eats in apple sauce) to rule out any discomfort. He’ll make a lovely addition to any home.

Drivers, recorders and spotters are all needed for next Tuesday’s Christmas Bird Count in Ladner. Canada. The Ladner count, which dates back to the 1950s, has a few ways people can participate. One is by joining a small team of birders as it drives or walks around its area counting all the birds team members see. Drivers, recorders and spotters are

all needed. Another way to participate is to stay home and count the birds that come to your feeders or in your yard. The information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data.

The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds. If you are interest in participating, contact count coordinator Jude Grass at 604-538-8774 or judegrass@shaw.ca for more information.

Murphy’s Law

A

TED MURPHY

t this time every year, there are all kinds of attempts to remove Christmas from the equation, efforts born out of the mistaken belief that being politically correct couldn’t possibly offend. Well, it can, and the further we travel down that road, the more divisiveness we’re sure to create. There are examples of this PC behaviour everywhere, but nowhere is it more prevalent than in government. You’d think with programs such as Santa Claus is Coming to Town, 12 Days Before Christmas and Christmas Time for Twos, the eight-page guide put out by the Corporation of Delta would include Christmas in the title, but I guess someone figured Winter Holiday Events & Activities would be a safer way to go in this day and age of political correctness. At least Delta makes some references to Christmas, and offers programs that embrace the occasion, unlike the Delta School District, which has pretty much wiped it off the map, leaving us to believe that it’s merely a coincidence that Christmas falls smack dab in the middle of a two-week winter break that begins before winter has even arrived. In a heartfelt message on the school district website, there are references to the holiday season, to peace, love, joy and hope, to celebration and relaxation, to time with family and friends, but not once is the elusive “C” word mentioned. I don’t mean to dump on our local government as it’s far from the only one, but when you take a step back and look at what’s happening in society today, it’s hard not to give your head a shake. There are, admittedly, many people that don’t celebrate Christmas, so while it’s considered prudent to take an innocuous approach, the powers that be, here and elsewhere, must recognize there’s an even greater number that do observe this most holy of days. They must also realize that not acknowledging Christmas can be offensive to Christians, particularly in a country founded on Christian principles. As much as it can be considered noble to take pains not to offend, when we’re watering things down to the point we’re reluctant to even acknowledge Christmas exists, we’ve gone too far. So with that said, and with absolutely no disrespect intended to anyone, have yourself a very Merry Christmas.

Speak up to ensure enviable community stays that way

H

ere we are at the time of year when many of us get some days off from work or school, when we spend time with family and friends celebrating the season. For some, it’s an extraordinarily busy time. For many of us, we take time to catch our breath and prepare for the new year and its challenges. Commercialization of Christmas, along with Black Friday and Boxing Day sales, have come to play a major role in the themes and activities that take place at this time of year. As you prepare for the events and challenges of the new year, I need to bid you adieu. I have been submitting columns in this space for over a decade — over 175 of them — and I have concluded it’s time to hang up my keyboard for other endeavours. We are considering relocating to Victoria to join family, including several grandchildren, all of whom are going through the school system. I expect I may want to comment on what’s happening in Victoria, but that idea has to wait for a bit. As I step back, I need to ask you: Do you appreciate your lifestyle here in South Delta? Do you treasure the ambience

Community Comment IAN ROBERTSON

of being somewhat rural yet so near to Vancouver, of being able to breathe sea air, of being surrounded by nature? Are you so busy that you assume everything will continue on just the same? Do you believe the pressures of developers are being handled with sagacity by Delta council? Do you really believe that a 10-lane bridge won’t bring on incredible pressure to urbanize all the land between Richmond and Surrey? Do you assume the plans, checks and balances from the port, and from the highway network, will not interfere with your lifestyle as land is gobbled up for jobs? If you want to preserve key features of your lifestyle, you really need to speak up. Politicians are being constantly

besieged by those who look at our “empty land” and want to develop just this one piece or for this really worthwhile endeavour. Pleas are made for affordable housing or for 10-storey buildings to ensure projects are doable. Consider as well the impact of senior levels of government on our community. South Delta does have challenges. In the absence of good long-term planning, we are experiencing some really sad short-term attempts to fix things. We need to look elsewhere for that which works well — whether Roman roads or European railroads — all of which played a major role in how those countries developed. Most recently the tolling of roads is showing promise for moving people without delays. Housing will continue to be a challenge as people want to move in with us. If you care, you need to speak up — by letters, by phone calls, by attending meetings and by getting involved next spring in the provincial election. Good luck and best wishes to all for the new year. Ian Robertson has been a contributor for over a decade, and is a very involved three-decade resident of South Delta.

Letters

Greetings for merchants

Editor: Due to an unexpected and certainly unwelcomed physical mishap, I am housebound and thus unable to get out and about and wish various Ladner merchants a very Merry Christmas. Therefore, I wish to avail myself of your generosity and the letters page to accomplish my wish, if you will so permit me to do. In no particular order, but commencing in Trenant Park Square, there is Black Bond Books and close by Ichiban Fine Cleaning, followed by Superior Fish Market, then on to Urban Rack with Cobs close by. From Ladner Trunk Road we move on to 48th Avenue and the heart of lovely Ladner Village. First up is Ladner Village Floral and then Fancy This Gifts before arriving at Vinca’s Kitchen to be followed by

South Coast Casuals. From there we travel down to Delta Street and a quick stop at Lux Foods before moving over to Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington’s office and her staff. Down the street we next visit Lawlor Goldsmith Shoppe before arriving at Ladner Village Hardware. Farther along a quick stop at Telus shop before crossing the street and greeting the staff at Localz Urban Cafe followed by a visit to Delta Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop with a final wish at Vagellis Grill & Lounge. Then back onto 48th Avenue and a hearty good cheer to the staff at CIBC. However, before we complete our journey of wishes, a must stop at the most delightful coffee/ tea spot in the village — Stir Coffee House. There, Robert Lowe and his won-

derful, ambient-inducing, sunshine staff provide a mix of good old-fashioned personal service with a modern touch to the more advanced choices of today’s society. And so, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all merchants in Ladner and despite the recent weatherman’s mistake of confusing snow for sunshine, we can think of no other place in this part of Canada more welcoming. Finally, a tip of the Christmas bonnet to the staff at the Optimist for being there, always. As a former reporter/editor, I can attest to the travails of gathering and presenting readable material week in and week out. An often arduous task but one that is rewarding in the extreme. Good Samaritan helps injured neighbour

Editor: Our families would like to extend a thank you to the lady that was responsible for notifying our daughter Val of her husband Ken slipping and falling less than 200 feet from their home. This fine lady from their neighbourhood stayed with him, waiting patiently for the ambulance to arrive.

Our daughter called 911 three times but no ambulance or help arrived so after an hour went by this fine lady, in desperation, hitchhiked a ride to the 12th Avenue fire hall to get help for Ken who was lying on the icy cul de sac with a broken hip and getting very cold. The firefighters arrived and removed Ken from the icy road. They placed him

on a stretcher and carried him inside his home nearby for warmth until the ambulance arrived from Richmond. We are also grateful to the firefighters that responded quickly when the lady requested their help and the ambulance attendants when they finally came and rushed Ken to Delta Hospital. Abe Froese

The holiday season is upon us and I am reminded, as I am every year at this time, that we truly live in a special place. Not only are we surrounded by beautiful scenery — incredible natural abundance, windswept beaches, agricultural landscapes, an historic town centre — but we also have some of the most thoughtful, caring and supportive people who make our community such a wonderful place to live. Red Nose readies for New Year’s

What are you doing this New Year’s Eve? Whether you’re celebrating or don’t have much planned, Operation Red Nose has something to offer. “If you’re celebrating, we encourage you to call us and book a ride to take you and your vehicle safely back home,” said Carlene Lewall, coordinator of Operation Red Nose DeltaRichmond. The service is open between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. and it’s recommended you call 30 to 45 minutes in advance of your desired pick-up time. If you don’t have a lot planned, Lewall suggests you consider volunteering. Volunteers will be treated to a fabulous dinner, receive many warm and thankful hugs from those using the service, and will have their kids looked after for the night without having to find a babysitter. Children of New Year’s Eve volunteers are invited

to enjoy a night of fun indoor play in the gym, complete with snacks, crafts and movies and then snuggle into their sleeping bags until their parents are finished with their driving shift. Navigators and escort drivers must be 19 years or older, and designated drivers must be 21 or older. With eight of the nine nights completed this holiday season, Operation Red Nose Delta-Richmond has already provided over 400 rides. Those wanting to use the service can call 604943-0460 to arrange a ride. Clients must have a vehicle to use and donations or tips are greatly appreciated. All proceeds are directed to amateur sport to benefit children and youth in Delta and Richmond. Those interested in volunteering can visit operationrednosedelta.com or call 604-943-0460.

Christmas is a hard time for many, partly because of all the things in our lives outside our control. Your boss lets you go the week before Christmas. The class was just too hard. You want to get married, but can’t find the right person. Your marriage is in trouble. There isn’t enough money to keep up with the bills. The doctor just said you have a lifethreatening illness. We all face obstacles that are too big for us. Christmas reminds us there is someone who understands exactly what we are going through. Jesus went from being God in heaven - all knowing, all powerful, unbound by space and time — to one of us. As an adult,

Hockey players fill holiday hampers

Team from Delta Hockey Academy goes to work on farm to raise money for grocery shopping IAN JACQUES

The Delta Wild Varsity Green hockey team experienced what it means to give to someone in need by helping to fundraise and then purchase items for Christmas food hampers. Hockey mom Laura Marriott, whose son Jackson is on the team, sparked the idea of generosity and goodwill. The Tsawwassen mom has been helping provide Christmas hampers to those in need through the Lower Mainland Purpose Society for the past 11 years. In 2008, she brought the initiative to Sacred Heart School, where her two younger children attend, with the Giving Tree. Through the years the generosity of friends, family and the community at large has seen the campaign grow bigger and bigger. Getting the hockey team

Delta Wild players worked at Wagner Hills farm earlier this month in order to buy food for Christmas hampers at Save-On-Foods. involved this year was through head coach Tim Preston. “As a team, I thought it would be great to work together to help families in need over the holiday season,” said Preston. “At the Delta Hockey Academy, the players are all fortunate that they have the support and resources from their families. Some kids are not as fortunate as these players and giving back and helping a family in need is a great way to help out in the community.” Preston thought the team could learn about

hard work and the daily challenges facing many families through the initiative. The first step was finding families that were the best fit for the team. They were able to connect with two families who both have boys the same age as the players on the team. “This was important, because it creates a connection with each player on the team,” added Preston. The second step was to raise the money for the hampers. On Sunday, Dec. 11, the team headed to Wagner Hills farm in

Langley and spent four hours painting, cleaning, bailing hay and shoveling snow to raise the $600. Wagner Hills is a rehabilitation centre for women where guests work daily in return for their stay at the centre. The final step came four days later when the players went to Save-On-Foods in Tsawwassen to shop for the families they adopted and to help Marriott fill other food hampers. “The goal of this experience is to humble the players and put life’s challenges into perspective,” said Preston.

Marriott wanted to thank Wayne Kupillas, owner of Tsawwassen’s Your Dollar Store With More, as he donated numerous boxes of necessities and gifts. She also wanted to thank Save-On-Foods, Knights of Columbus and Alan Cameron of Sun Gallery Patio Furniture Sales in Tsawwassen Mills. “We have been helping lots of families through lots of other people,” said Marriott. “There are so many other amazing friends who support our initiative each Christmas with generous donations.

I could not do it without them. I am so grateful to everyone for their support.” The Wild Hockey team includes: coaches Tim Preston and Brent Thurston and players Mark Thurston, Landon Walter, Braden Blace, Jacob Sherwood, Alex Serraglio, Carson Hemenway, Russell Howlett, Austin Ungurean, Zachary Sherwin, Jackson Marriott, Nathan Kirkpatrick, Holden Cardinal, Tanner Attew, Alec Scouras, Sammy May, Lukas Olson, Ty Gagno, Braedy Euerby and Carson Latimer.

This year the gift tables were well stacked with presents for men, women and children, while Leslie Abramson organized the donation of handbags stuffed with skin care products, toiletries, and cosmetics, a project of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the Delta Police Department’s “Women in Blue.” A team of young volunteers from the Delta Secondary Interact Club helped at the dinner, which brings together the most vulnerable people in the community for a night of cheer, says Aroon.

Over 100 guests gathered at Ladner Christian Fellowship on a blustery day earlier this month for the eighth annual Ladner Community Kitchen Christmas dinner. Jini Aroon, coordinator of the Ladner Community Kitchen, which provides weekly hot meals to South Delta Food Bank clients, says the annual Christmas dinner receives support from many in the community. The evening started in style to the lilting tunes from a Delta Police Pipe Band piper, followed by two talented ladies, Diane Hansen leading the carols

Among the many community volunteers and partners were Delta police Chief Neil Dubord, deputy police Chief Lyle Beaudoin and former chief Jim Cessford. A young immigrant family from India celebrated their first Christmas in Canada and enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner, while their little boy got a chance to sing Christmas carols with other children. A gentleman from the First Nations community in Tsawwassen took on the mic to express his gratitude for being able to attend this event for five years running.

Members of the Newfoundland Dog Fanciers of BC turned some heads during their recent Jingle Newf Walk in Boundary Bay.

Jingle Newf Walk spreads some holiday cheer in Boundary Bay The Newfoundland Dog Fanciers of BC spread some Christmas cheer in Boundary Bay late last month. The group, which held a Newf Day in the Park at Tsawwassen’s Diefenbaker Park last spring, recently hosted a Jingle Newf Walk where decorated Newfoundlands and their owners went for a robust walk, greeting pas-

sersby and sharing holiday wishes. Being one of the heaviest coated of the giant breed dogs, Newfoundlands usually make heads turn and often prompt folks to stop for a cuddle. Held on Vancouver Island for many years, the walk made its Lower Mainland debut when Martha and Paul Leigh

of Centennial Parkway volunteered to host it. Newfoundlands and their owners from all over Greater Vancouver met at the Leigh house for a walk, bringing joy to a neighbourhood saddened by the loss of one of its own in a car accident. The walk ended in true Newfoundland dog fashion — swimming in the ocean!

Youngster organizes Sock Rock to help give the gift of warmth

More than 750 pairs of socks collected at dance in Tsawwassen IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Tsawwassen youth recently helped provide the gift of a warm pair of socks thanks to a successful dance fundraiser. The inaugural Sock Rock was organized by 11-year-old Morgan McDonough, a Sacred Heart School student from Boundary Bay. The dance, in which youth gained entry by bringing a new pair of socks, was held Dec. 14 at the Inhabit Training Academy in Tsawwassen. More than 60 kids and 40 adults collected more than 750 pairs of socks and $250 was raised through the sale of snack bags that McDonough put together.

His parents will be matching the cash donation, making it an even $500, which along with the socks, will be donated to the Lockout Emergency Aid Society. McDonough and his family recently moved to Tsawwassen from Los Angeles and wanted to “give back” this Christmas. He said he got the idea for the sock fundraiser through a similar event called Soles for Souls. “I thought some people really need socks. Everyone needs to feel warm and if you make your feet warm, your heart will also be warm,” he said. So from this idea, Sock Rock was born. Word of the fundraiser spread through social

media and through the Sacred Heart School community. Inhabit Training Academy offered up the space to hold the event, Paul Roberts from Uptown Eatery supplied the DJ and disco lights so the kids could all dance in their socks and Delta police officer Moe Parry stopped by to lend his support. Chief Neil Dubord was also going to stop by, but had a conflict in his schedule. Instead, his wife Lorraine attended, bringing good wishes from the chief and the department. “Morgan is learning to give back and really experiencing the true meaning of Christmas,” said his mom Ruvé. “We want to thank all of our amazing

friends for all their support.” Lookout Society is grateful for the support — especially at this time of year. “This kind of support really shows that anyone can make a difference to the lives of people in need,” said Keir Macdonald, deputy executive director for Lookout Emergency Aid Society. “It’s very encouraging to see that people of all ages in our community are aware and concerned about the issues surrounding the homeless — and are compelled to do something. During this especially cold and challenging winter, every donation makes a direct impact on the homeless and vulnerable populations we serve.”

This Christmas, give your family and friends a gift that saves lives ... a smoke alarm. Most fatal fires take place at night, while you and your family are asleep - when seconds can make the difference between life and death. If you have one or more working smoke alarms in your home you double your chances of surviving a fire. Smoke alarms are inexpensive and easy to install. And a caution ... Never borrow a battery from a smoke alarm for use in a toy or gadget! Test your smoke alarms monthly and replace every ten years.

• Candle Care

Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the holiday season. They can also be a source of fire in your home, so be cautious with them. Place candles in non-tip candle holders and ensure they are well away from the Christmas tree and other holiday decorations. Never leave lit candles unattended and ensure that they are out of reach of children! Turn off all lights and blow out all candles when leaving.

Merry Christmas

www.deltafire.ca 604-946-8541 • Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights

Most Christmas fires can be prevented. If purchasing a live-cut tree, test it for freshness by tapping the base of the tree on the ground. If needles fall or can be pulled off easily the tree is too dry. AT home, find a cool spot for your tree, away from heater vents and the fireplace. Keep your tree as fresh as possible by watering it often. You can also reduce the risk of fire by installing cooler mini lights, or the new LED type lights. Inspect your strings of lights for wear or damage. If Interior/exterior lights are worn or frayed replace them. Never leave the lights on while you sleep or are away from the home. Limiting the use of warm lights also helps to extend the freshness of a live-cut tree! Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.

Practice fire safety in the kitchen this holiday season. Never leave cooking food unattended and if you are faced with a grease fire, remember - put a lid on it and turn the heat source off! Always turn pot handles to the back of the stove so pots won’t be pulled or knocked off. If you don’t already own a kitchen fire extinguisher… DON’T WAIT! Get one now as a pre-season gift for your whole family! Enjoy the holidays and stay fire safe! Be alert when cooking.

The Night Before Christmas Christmas Greetings Twas the night before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed

Gift wrappers at the ready!

with Nelson’s service and price And I thought of his crew who are always so nice. I think that I’ll call them that old Nelson crew And place one last order Yes, that’s what I’ll do. As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer! “What service!” I exclaimed as he dropped off my order He had one more stop and asked “Which way to the border?” Then he sprang to his sleigh to his team gave a whistle And away they all flew like a down of thistle. I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight...

Tremendous community support allowed Women Helping Women to fill more than 600 gift bags this year.

Women Helping Women receives help to fill bags

Thanks to the generosity of many, the volunteers of Women Helping Women South Delta recently prepared more than 600 gift bags. This marked year eight of the Christmas giving campaign and was the most successful to date. “To our communities from Ladner out to Abbotsford, and every-

where in between, thank you for your amazing generosity,” said coordinator Pindi Mann. “To our elders that could only donate one item but wanted to help, to the students and schools that collected as groups, to the moms who really get why we are doing this, to the lovely business owners and community

groups that hosted boxes or donated services/supplies/products, to the office groups that made us their giving program and to every single person who donated a single item, bag full or truck full, our heartfelt thanks. You have ensured that many will have smiles on their faces Christmas morning,” Mann added.

Santa trades sleigh for canoe!

Brenda Viala got quite a giggle when she spotted Santa Claus paddling near her float home in Ladner Reach. She says she has no idea where he came from, but it looked like he was heading in the general direction of Westham Island.

OT thriller caps perfect December Delta Ice Hawks make it eight straight victories by rallying to beat Abbotsford The Delta Ice Hawks were perfect for the month of December for the first time in at least a decade and they did it in dramatic fashion. Brad Crompton’s hat trick goal in double overtime lifted Delta to an improbable 6-5 win over the Abbotsford Pilots on Wednesday night in Ladner. The Ice Hawks (22-9-0-0) completed the month with a 7-0-0 record and have now won eight consecutive games to push its Tom Shaw Conference lead over the Grandview Steelers (18-8-0-4) to four points. Rookie Jordan Bogress had forced the game into overtime when he converted a rebound with 17 seconds remaining in regulation with his team on the power play and goalie Jordan Naylor pulled in favour of a sixth attacker. Moments earlier, defenceman Nevan Flay prevented what looked to be a sure Pilots’ insurance goal into the empty net with a sprawling poke check. Crompton has been huge since being acquired earlier in the month from the Ridge Meadows Flames. The 19-year-old winger now has seven goals and 11 points in six games. It was the Ice Hawks’ first win in four tries against the Pilots (19-9-0-3), including an 8-1 drubbing back on Nov. 18. Abbotsford never trailed in the contest until the overtime winner, opening up a 3-1 second period lead before Crompton notched his first pair of the night. Captain Cam Cuthbert and Daniel Rubin also scored.

2017 Stealth roster features more Ladner flavour The Vancouver Stealth will have an even more distinctive Ladner flavour for the 2017 National Lacrosse League season. The Stealth unveiled its roster on Monday, including Delta Islanders graduate Evan Messenger being one of four players named to the practice roster. The high-scoring righthander, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Tuesday, signed with the Stealth as a free agent after having a leading role in the Islanders winning their first-ever B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship and advancing to the Minto Cup. Messenger finished third in league scoring with a career best 96 points, including 41 goals. He was also second in playoff scoring with 30 points, finishing right behind teammate Jon Phillips. He was named to the league’s First All-Star team and received the BCJALL Top Graduating Player Award. He was initially selected by Vancouver in the fourth round (39th overall) of the 2015 NLL Entry Draft. The Stealth roster already featured lefthanded Ladner standout Logan Schuss who will once again be among the club’s key

After helping the Delta Islanders win the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship, Evan Messenger has earned a practice roster spot with the Vancouver Stealth. offensive players. The Islanders’ graduate finished second in team scoring last season with 86 points in 15 games, including 29 goals. He is entering his fifth season in the NLL after being the No. 1 pick in the 2013 Entry Draft and eventually earning league rookie-of-theyear honours. Vancouver will be looking to improve upon a 5-13 2016 campaign. The Stealth travel to

Calgary for their season opener Jan. 6 and host the same Roughnecks on Jan. 14 in their first game at the Langley Events Centre. The Stealth initially invited the leaguemaximum of 40 players to training camp and finalizing the roster was a challenge for President and General Manager Doug Locker. “I am really pleased with the compete level the guys showed over the last several weeks of camp and I am looking forward to the new season,” said Locker. “Obviously, we had some difficult decisions, as every team in our league has, but our staff did a tremendous job evaluating each player very thoroughly and this team has the tools to compete at the highest levels of our league.” Meanwhile, goaltender Kevin Orleman, who was a standout during the Islanders’ 2016 playoff run, has been named to the Buffalo Bandits practice roster. He was the Bandits’ top pick in the NLL Draft and still has a year of junior eligibility remaining. Other Islander graduates in the NLL include the Colorado Mammoth trio of Eli McLaughlin, Jordan Gilles and Mike Mallory.

SAVAGE, Susan Raye (nee Hamilton) April 5, 1945 - December 16, 2016 Susan passed away peacefully at the Delta Hospice, with her loving family by her side following a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

SPRATT, Delta Eleanor August 24, 1931 - December 17, 2016 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our Wife, Mom and Grandmother, Delta Eleanor Spratt on December 17th surrounded by family. Born August 24, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Our Mom and Dad were married in 1959 and lived in Winnipeg and Toronto before moving to Tsawwassen in 1972. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings. She is survived by her husband Bob, her three daughters Linda McCabe (Paul), Diane Hansen (Brett), Roberta Leevers (Mike) and two granddaughters Emily McCabe and Laura Hansen. She is also remembered by nieces and nephews and many friends. Mom enjoyed a good game of poker, trips to the casino, traveling, golfing, baking and especially spending time with family and friends. Mom was also a volunteer at the Delta Hospital Thrift shop, for more than 20 years. Mom was a true lady with a gentle presence. She was always interested to hear what was “new and exciting”. We will miss her immensely. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at 4 North of Royal Columbian Hospital and Dr. Turnbull and staff at Delta Hospital who took excellent care of her. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Delta Hospital Foundation would be greatly appreciated. A service will take place at All Saints Anglican Church, 4755 Arthur Drive, Ladner on December 29th at 2 pm with reception to follow.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Harry and Oda Hamilton. She is survived and forever missed by her husband Ken, brother John Hamilton (Nancy), sister Vicki Cullis (Ron), niece Dana Huff (Brenda), nephew Jeff Hamilton, niece Kristy Sumner (Stu), great-nieces Abby and Jacie Sumner, and the extended Hamilton and Savage families. Susan travelled the world as a flight attendant for 30 years. She began her career with Pacific Western Airlines and retired from Canadian Airlines in 1995. Susan always put her concern for others ahead of her own. Possessed of a sharp wit and a generous spirit, she was forthright, loyal and loving and enjoyed good company, playing cards and entertaining. She had a passion for decorating and crafts, and creating beautiful jewelry, flower arrangements and personalized cards. In recent years, she took up golf and enjoyed playing with Kenny and their friends and family, locally and in Palm Springs. In accordance with Susan’s wishes, no service will be held. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the Delta Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care. Special thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Varughese. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Susan to the Delta Hospice Society. Expressions of condolence can be made to the family at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca Always In Our Hearts
