Paxton gets a hero’s welcome

Mariners pitcher back in Ladner at his old school IAN JACQUES

James Paxton paid a visit to his former elementary school as the Seattle Mariners caravan rolled into Hawthorne Elementary Wednesday afternoon. The Major League Baseball pitcher from Ladner joined teammates as they stressed the importance of being good citizens. Paxton told the students that it’s important to be drug free if you want to reach your dreams. “Realizing your dreams takes a lot of focus and determination. You have to be able to learn in the classroom and listen to your teachers. And on the sports field you have to be focused and listen to your coaches,” he said. “I was out there once sitting just like you guys and being drug free helped me to realize my dreams, play baseball and make it to the Mariners.” Several students presented Paxton with a card and an old

“Even in elementary school here at such a young age, this Hawthorne student demonstrated that if he set goals and

worked hard to achieve them, he could not only follow his passion, but he could realize his dreams,” said Robinson.

“He was and is a great role model. I’m very proud to welcome him home.” PAXTON: see Page 23

Pieces of concrete have fallen off the pedestrian overpass at Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has deemed a Highway 17A overpass safe for the public after two large chunks of concrete broke off the structure last weekend.

East Ladner resident Gerard van Dop, who uses the pedestrian overpass just north of Ladner Trunk Road frequently, discovered the fallen concrete. “I was out for a walk and happened to go on the underside of the overpass on the east side of the highway and saw the concrete on the grass,” he said. “I’m

certain that it was caused by the cold weather.” Van Dop, who has a background in the construction industry, said he is quite familiar with concrete and has seen this happen before on other structures. “They salt the overpass, the salt then gets into a fisher and

into the rebar. The rebar was not coated at the time that the bypass was built and it gets rusty and causes it to expand and after the first freeze, it breaks off,” van Dop said. “My thinking is this could be a problem on all the walking overpasses. CONCERN: see Page 3

Horses enjoy R&R in Delta Odysseo’s equine stars on ‘vacation’ here prior to shows in Vancouver DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Horses starring in Cavalia’s Odysseo show in Vancouver later this month are spending some time on “vacation” in South Delta. “Basically, it’s leisure time for them,” said company spokesperson Eric Paquette, who explained it’s a big move when the show heads from one city to another. The horses are staying at a “beautiful,” 24-acre farm, he said, asking the specific location not be named. The horses get dirty, spend a lot of time outside and just enjoy the downtime, he explained. “They will be the very last to arrive on the site here in Vancouver at Olympic Village, when we’re going to be ready to start the rehearsals, and then, of course, to start the show.” The production’s 65 horses are treated like

bond between humans and horses, said Paquette. Odysseo opens in

Vancouver Jan. 31 and has performances scheduled through Feb. 19.

The show’s Canadian tour will include stops in Mississauga and Ottawa.

Concern over piece of concrete falling onto vehicle CONTINUED from Page 1 “A piece of concrete that could fall and hit a car going 100 km/h, you could imagine that is just like a grenade going off in a vehicle. It’s game over.” He contacted the ministry about his concerns on Monday and received a call back later that afternoon. When the Optimist reached out to the ministry for comment Monday afternoon, a spokesperson

said they appreciated the notification from van Dop and would be looking into the matter immediately. On Tuesday afternoon, a ministry spokesperson said the overpass was inspected by ministry staff and the maintenance contractor. “A few small sections of concrete were found to have broken off beyond the shoulder edge, where water was able to enter,” the ministry spokesperson

said. “This is a common form of deterioration for aging concrete, which can be accelerated by freezing temperatures. “There are no structural or safety concerns, and this overpass will remain open. Following our inspection, the deteriorated concrete has been removed, and concrete repairs have been scheduled for this spring, weather permitting.”

Delta council this week approved a $1.4 million contract to rehabilitate the former home of Delta Museum in Ladner Village. The contract will see significant structural work as well as the removal of the rear annex portion of the building that for many years housed the archives. A separate contract had previously been awarded and work is now underway to remove hazardous material, including asbestos. In total, the rehabilitation of the century-old building will cost $2.5 million, which includes a $500,000 grant from the federal government. The building, which will get an elevator, will be the new home of the community police station and have public washrooms. Other uses are expected in the future. Ken Kuntz, director of Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department, told the Optimist the renovation work should be

As for the museum, it will have a new home in the first floor of the former courthouse building in Ladner’s civic precinct, adjacent to the Delta Archives and Edgar Dunning Reading Room. The 8,500-square-foot facility will have interactive displays and features that weren’t part of the old museum. “We are now getting close to doing our planning work for the new space for the museum and going through a visioning exercise right now to

determine the shape and functionality and objectives,” Kuntz explained. “Once that’s done, we’ll start putting pen to paper and hopefully by the end of 2017 or early 2018 be in a position to re-open that kind of facility.” One of the terms for Delta providing the Delta Museum Society with a new home was that the municipality take over day-to-day operations. The society agreed with the plan last year but still has a role to play as the agreement stipulates it will remain the owner of the collection.

Police alert public after multiple mail thefts

IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Delta police are urging residents to be extra vigilant when picking up their mail after several recent thefts in South Delta and North Delta. The first incident was reported on Jan. 5 in the 1300-block of Beach Grove Road when a suspect smashed a window of a Canada Post truck to steal mail and packages. The theft occurred just after 1:30 p.m. The suspect is described as a 30-yearold Caucasian male, wearing a dark ball cap and dark clothing. Delta police public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks said when the suspect was confronted, he got into the passenger side of a dark-coloured VW Jettatype car. Another incident occurred on Jan. 7 at 11:50 p.m. in the 4800block of 57th Street in Ladner. Brooks said a complainant observed a man breaking into a multifamily complex’s mail-

boxes. The complainant yelled to the suspect who fled in a dark-coloured SUV with a spare tire on the back. There were two other males in the vehicle. No suspects have been identified in either case. “These incidents have been happening at different times of the day, so it is difficult to determine whether we have the same individual(s) working or other suspects,” said Brooks. “It’s important for Delta police to notify the general public so they are not caught unaware and encourage them to engage in the practice of picking up their mail daily whenever possible.” Brooks said police are working with Canada Post on the thefts. “If people are expecting to receive credit card information, and important package or important papers and they don’t receive them in what they believe is a reasonable amount of time, then please follow up with Canada Post and make a report with them,” added Brooks.

Share family stories in Delta libraries project

Contest celebrates Family Literacy Day FRANCES THOMSON

D e l t a C o m m u n i t y Li t e ra c y Committee

In celebration of Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27, Family Day on Feb. 13, and Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, Delta libraries are inviting families to write family stories and share their heritage. Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually to promote the importance of reading and other literacy-related activities in families. The Family Stories @ Delta Libraries project encourages families to share their life experiences and/or celebrate their heritage in a short story of 250 to 500 words in length. Libraries want to create a montage of stories for Delta’s Heritage Day festivities in April and will be asking permission to record some of the entries through audio or video. All stories will be

entered to win draw prizes, which include passes for the Greenheart Canopy TreeWalk at UBC, bowling at Uncle Buck’s at Tsawwassen Mills, Richmond Paintball and Delta Parks and SUBMITTED PHOTO Recreation. hat’s Delta going to do with all that money? I’ve heard the question a few times over the last couple of weeks as massive increases to property assessments have some believing local government is in line for a windfall. If assessments are up 40-something per cent, then property taxes are going to rise by an equivalent amount, right? No, they won’t, but that doesn’t stop the panic fueled by confusion and misinformation. Last year property assessments increased by an average of 17 per cent in South Delta and property taxes went up by 3.5 per cent, proving, yet again, that although there’s a correlation between the two, one doesn’t necessarily rise in step with the other. But did that stop many homeowners from freaking out when they got their assessment notices earlier this month and saw increases north of 40 per cent? Of course it didn’t. Many jumped to the erroneous conclusion that taxes would also skyrocket, questioning why municipal hall needs all that extra cash or offering suggestions where it could be spent. My favourite was the idea to use the bonanza to eliminate the toll on the yet-to-be built bridge. Mercifully, Mayor Lois Jackson announced Monday that Delta council is proposing a 2.75 per cent property tax increase for 2017, which should put an end to fears that tax bills arriving in the spring will include frightful news. Like it is every year, the golden rule of property assessment is to be average. If your home rises in value in step with others, regardless of how steep or modest that increase might be, your only real concern is the tax hike set by Delta. However, if your assessment jumps beyond the average, effectively putting your home in a higher tax bracket, it will mean something extra on your tax bill. Conversely, if your home’s value doesn’t rise as sharply as others, dropping it into a lower tax bracket, you will save on your tax bill. It is, admittedly, a confusing formula, exacerbated by the fact that assessment notices and property tax bills arrive four months apart, allowing that worry to linger throughout the early part of the year. What you won’t have to concern yourself with, however, is trying to figure out what Delta is going to do with all that additional cash.

A new agricultural mindset is taking root in Boundary Bay

t was a great few weeks of fun over Christmas but I am glad to be settling down into a new year. I tried my best not to overindulge in the many culinary delights that were available of late but alas, I am weak. I also enjoyed what was something of a real stretch of winter but am happy to see the rain and feel the much warmer temperatures. I was checking my photo archives and there were pictures of us eating kale and mixing compost into our school neighbourhood farms last year at this time. Not so much this year. The soil is still frozen and if you like kalesicles, there are a few of those kicking around. The young student farmers at the Delta Farm Roots Mini-School are keen to get outside and get going. They have crops growing in raised beds close to the school which retain decent heat and have tarped off a half-acre for their first field. This area had been tilled in the fall and will need some more preparation before seed is sown and seedlings are transplanted. The soil here needs some remediation and people are stepping up to help out. This past Monday, before the rains came in, Kevin Savage, who is working on land preparation on the

Southlands, was kind enough to use a large Volvo excavator to fill three dump truck loads of topsoil, which was carted to the Farm Roots field site. Thanks to Century Group for thinking of us. As part of the Farm Roots partnership, and until they can get outside, the students will be receiving instruction from the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Institute for Sustainable Food Systems. Dr. Rebecca Harbut will be leading the way this semester. Her first lecture last week was fascinating as she related philosophical observations from American physicist and philosopher Thomas Kuhn with the idea to get the kids thinking about alternative points of view to traditional thinking, especially as it pertains to agriculture. She stressed that it is important to move yourself down the spec-

trum in the hopes you can better appreciate other viewpoints. The crux of the lecture, for me, was to envision a food economy where different ways of doing agriculture can co-exist. A portion of the lecture showed what family units around the world spent on weekly food budgets. Harbut showed photos of the family and the items they would typically purchase. At the top of the list was a family of four from Germany that spends $500 a week on cheese and mostly packaged food. A family of four from Carolina spent $341 a week. The only thing fresh in the photo were grapes and tomatoes. All the rest was pizza, packed stuff, chips, pop and lots of fast food boxes. These two examples were a sharp contrast to a family of 13 from Bhutan who live in a very lovely looking home. They spend $5.03 on their weekly food budget. I only saw two items that appeared to be packaged. Everything else was fresh vegetables, fruit, grains and protein. If these are the types of things our kids are learning in our school system, they will be in good stead for a promising healthy and prosperous future. Looking forward to a new bridge slide park with hotel and a possible casino. Vehicles from all over the Lower Mainland will come to Delta for these and current attractions, not to mention the many who use BC Ferries daily from Tsawwassen. Surrey and Langley continue to grow in population, adding more vehicles heading north on Highway 99. Wong states that in 2006 there was an $800 million solution — another submerged tunnel. I have two issues with that statement. First, you can’t really compare 2006 costs to 2017 costs for a tunnel or a bridge. We all know that labour, materials and land has increased significantly over the past 11 years. In addition, not only will we get a new 10-lane bridge but we also get three replaced interchanges at Westminster, Steveston and 17A, all of

It is a valued asset in the community that I have enjoyed using for many years, however with the current problems associated with an aging infrastructure, why is it not being maintained? It can’t be that there is no money available. The annual fees charged for a senior drop in-pass in Delta is currently $450. This compares to $389.50 in Richmond, $372.25 in Surrey and $273.21in

Perhaps our elected representatives on the parks, recreation and culture commission, councillors Robert Campbell and Sylvia Bishop, or director of parks, recreation and culture Ken Kuntz would like to explain the reasons for our inflated fees and the apparent lack of an orderly maintenance plan. Minue was surrendered to the shelter with his brother Oliver after his owners decided it was time to find the boys a home where they would be happier. Minue has a very long history of being unhappy in the home with his brother cat and large dog as he will avoid the litter box to show his displeasure. In shelter we’ve seen nothing but a happy, chatty boy who wants love and affection. We know Minue will be happiest in an adult only home, ideally where he would have some access to a safe outdoor area. Minue previously had some urinary crystals and is on a preventative adult diet to ensure he doesn’t develop issues in the future. Minue has had a small heart murmur since he was young but at this point he’s passed his vet exam and full blood work with flying colours and is a healthy senior boy! Minue loves to hunt and chase things and in shelter we’ve noticed he LOVES to be brushed, which is good since he has such a long luxurious coat! Minue seems to have a preference for female owners but the right gentleman may be able to work their way into his heart. Could you be the second chance for this fluffy senior boy?

Everything you say is true and everyone in Delta is not for this 10-lane bridge. The mayor does not speak for all of us and I doubt the mayor will be living in the shadow of this 10-lane bridge. It’s too bad people just say, “Oh, it’s too late to stop it.” Maybe the NDP will have some ideas. I am not a NDP supporter but I might soon become one. Max Scabar

Editor: Re: Due process missing as gov’t forges ahead with its bridge, Community Comment, Jan. 13 While I appreciate Nicholas Wong’s article and his sense of humour, I have a different perspective on the new bridge. As one who regularly uses the 58-year-old tunnel, I am looking forward to seeing the construction start on the bridge and I think most commuters are as well. Wong asks: “Why does Delta have the only mayor in the province who supports a bridge?” I think the answer is that we have a mayor and council who see the benefits of a bridge for Delta and other areas south of the Fraser River. Delta and surrounding areas continue to see much growth. We have two new large malls, a proposed Big Splash water

public is missing a lot of information required to make an informed decision. That couldn’t be further from the truth. From the outset, the provincial government committed to being as open and accountable on the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project as possible. To date, over 8,000 pages of documents have been posted to the project website, detailing every piece of “due process” we have undertaken. This includes the business case for the project. Since the very beginning, we clearly communicated our intent, we have done the research and we have articulated our findings. Information has been posted with each step along the way. And the steps we’ve taken have been thorough and methodical, including public and stakeholder consultation. We asked the public about the need, and were told the need was great. We surveyed British Columbians about the options and were told a bridge was preferred. Three rounds of indepth public consultation; hundreds of meetings

with stakeholders, including the City of Richmond, Corporation of Delta, Metro Vancouver and others. As well, we have taken our project to the Environmental Assessment Office, and are waiting on its decision. We’ve applied to the Agricultural Land Commission for approval to remove small tracts of farmland adjacent to Highway 99 for use on the project, with a commitment that there will be no net loss of farmland as a result. The assertion that this bridge is being built so the port can dredge the river is a complete fallacy, one of the many myths perpetuated by critics of the project. The province will not dredge the river as part of the project. Nor will replacing the tunnel with a bridge increase the size of ships that can traverse the river, as the new bridge will be about the same height as the Alex Fraser Bridge. I respect the fact that not all British Columbians want to see the George Massey Tunnel replaced. It has been part of the fabric

of the Lower Mainland for 60 years. But we can agree that Highway 99 is vitally important to the movement of goods and people through the Lower Mainland and Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway. With the age and seismic vulnerability of the tunnel, we’re taking the responsible action, and improving movement on the corridor. When completed, the bottleneck the Canadian Automobile Association ranks as one of the worst in Canada will be improved. So will safety for motorists, and our dedicated first responders will have quick, safer access. Transit reliability will be improved, with over $500 million in transit infrastructure included in the project. And the environment will benefit, with less idling, and improvements to Deas Slough and Deas Island. We are moving forward on the project to replace the George Massey Tunnel, and are doing so in confidence that all due diligence has been taken. Century’s redevelopment plans find support around Delta council table

Editor: The two six-storey apartment blocks that Century Group plans to build in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall parking lot will be a disaster for the community, replacing the open, airy town centre with a concrete canyon like the north end of 56th Street. That is, if Delta council approves the development. At every turn, Century Group comes first; the good of the community comes last. More than

one participant in the Southlands hearing felt the process was a sham and a waste of time, council having made up its mind in advance. As soon as Southlands was in the bag, Sean Hodgins announced his plan to gut the Town Centre Mall and build condos. A year later, council conveniently instigated a tax break to help him do so. He wanted a waiver of the four-storey building

height restriction so he could build a six-storey tower at the north end of 56th Street; council obediently approved the development. The community has a right to know if the mayor or councillors are being improperly influenced in their support for these developments. People are starting to join up the dots and it’s time for council to come clean. Tom Morrison

The federal government is giving another boost to a Delta-based company whose innovative technology could forever change the additives in our food products. Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, on behalf of Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food Lawrence MacAulay, was at Mazza Innovation Tuesday to announce a $1.1 million investment to enable the plant extract facility on Progress Way to expand. It’s a repayable investment under the govern-

ment’s Growing Forward 2 AgriInnovation Program. The company, started by Joe Mazza, relocated to Delta a year ago. It specializes in producing plant extracts using healthy and clean technologies. The bioactive compounds extracted can be used as ingredients for functional foods, dietary supplements and beauty products. Juice companies are already taking advantage. “Agriculture and AgriFood Canada developed a unique technology to extract the healthy compounds in fruits in an environmental friendly

Those extracts are different in that they aren’t created from toxic organic solvents, which is the current method. Lightburn said companies making extracts the old way should be worried about the new healthy technology. Company chief financial officer Sean Hodgins said their crystalized extracts has a market that will continue to grow, especially for health conscious consumers looking to boost nutrients in their diets. The company received an earlier $300,000 federal research and development investment.

Stroke survivors stay active with weekly walks around mall

Tsawwassen Mills is not just a shopping destination, but as a group of stroke survivors from Delta is discovering, it’s also a great place for a warm, Wednesday morning, window-shopping walk. In a co-operative venture with the mall, the Stroke Recovery Association of B.C. and the March of Dimes, members of the Delta Stroke Recovery Society are now taking weekly walks along the mall’s colourful corridors. The Next Steps walking program is free to stroke survivors in the community — and others who would like to join them. Next Steps was developed by the GF Strong Rehab Hospital and has evolved

into stroke-recovery activities throughout the province. “We are most grateful that Tsawwassen Mills has opened its space to us,” said Delta Stroke Recovery Society president Peter McTait. “The mall is a warm haven for our members on these chilly winter days.” The walks start at 8:30 a.m. from the Food Court at Entrance No. 5. The Wednesday morning walk is in addition to the group’s gathering every Tuesday at Tsawwassen United Church. The session there include exercises for the brain and body, after which members socialize at lunch. It begins at 11 a.m. New members are always welcome.

January is more than half over already. How many of your New Year’s resolutions are still in play? There is something about the new year that begs us to try to change. We know we can do better, and a fresh year seems like a great time to start. However, resolutions often lack the strength to facilitate real life change. A year ago, someone from our church gave me a book, One Word that will change your life, by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page. They suggest that focusing on one word for the year can be more powerful than trying to keep a list of resolutions. I tried this last year, along with several others from our congregation, and we are doing it again

There are plans to return to the Wexford for another performance, as well as visit Augustine House, in the spring. “I’m just really happy there’s so many people interested in being part of the band,” says Yip, who plays clarinet. Gray Amphlett plays the

trumpet with the group and says it’s a collection of friendly people who are good to get along with. The band meets Thursdays from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. in the Dogwood Room at McKee Seniors Recreation Centre, 5155-47th Ave. There’s a cost of $25 (the annual McKee membership fee). Participants need to bring their own instrument.

Emily Hayes definitely kept busy as the producer of a new independent science fiction film. Her job entailed a wide variety of tasks, everything from casting and coordinating locations for filming to getting food for actors and overseeing hair, makeup and wardrobe. “I like to be busy all the time,” says Hayes, adding the role felt natural for her. Hayes grew up in Tsawwassen and graduated from South Delta Secondary in 2003.

Psychonaut, which had its premiere last week in Vancouver, is the first film she’s produced. She says she was able to apply skills, like project management and taking on a leadership role, she has from her full-time DJ’ing job. She says the movie was shot over 21 days in 14 locations with a cast of 18. She got into filmmaking after hearing about a contest while DJ’ing at an event for the film community. Hayes says she and the director, Marc Nyiti, want to continue making indie films.

The trailer for Psychonaut can be viewed at vimeo.com/ psychonautmovie. The full movie can be also be purchased through Vimeo on Demand.

Guild members Take Five at Gallery 1710 Quintet of talented artists featured in show that provides colourful break from winter blues NOREEN FAIRWEATHER

Optimist contributor

Five of the South Delta Artists Guild’s talented and versatile artists are coming together in a two-week show of their latest work beginning next Wednesday at the guild’s Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen. Laurel Johnson, Lea Price, Eileen Fong, Marlene Strain and Mary Ellen Bullock have their work featured in the appropriately named Take Five, a show that guarantees Gallery 1710 visitors a colourful break from the winter blues. After retiring from a teaching career in home economics, Johnson was able to devote more time to her keen interest in art. She joined the guild, enjoying the friendship and talent, and participating in workshops to develop her skills. She paints in various mediums, including watercolour, acrylic, pastel and oil, occasionally experimenting towards

abstraction, and sometimes dropping in a little humour. Price’s lifetime involvement in art runs from childhood. Americanborn, she immigrated to Canada and spent three years at Emily Carr University. A long-time member of the guild who exhibits regularly, the well-known and admired artist enjoys acrylic painting land-and-seascapes and animals, influenced by impressionism. Fong began learning the art of Chinese brush painting in 1994 when she discovered her innate love of nature dovetailed perfectly with the art form. She learned and practised, and then found herself drawn to the fine colours available in acrylics, which gave her a new dimension. She works towards expressing light and happiness with freedom and spontaneity. Watercolour artist Strain began teaching herself art about 11 years ago and is mainly self-taught with

A member of both the South Delta Artists Guild

and the Federation of Canadian Artists, Strain’s

work depicting nature has won awards from both. Her art in watercolour, usually thought of as loose and free-flowing in style, is a delicate, detailed mix of free-flow and careful precision, with honest colour. Bullock, currently the guild’s treasurer and originally from Hamilton, joined the group in 2015. She had mastered the art of working with wool, spinning, dyeing and weaving encouraged by her mother, who also spurred her towards painting, and on moving to Richmond she took a series of intensive art courses, working mostly in acrylic, watercolour and coloured pencil. Take Five runs from Jan. 25 to Feb. 5. A welcome reception to meet the artists and enjoy their work is set for Saturday, Jan. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. Adjacent to South Delta Recreation Centre, Gallery 1710 is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Today, families are struggling with nowhere to turn.

Paxton gears up for season

Mariners pitcher returns to Ladner to visit his former elementary school

IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u i t n g Wr i t e r

James Paxton feels all the pieces are in place for a memorable 2017 Major League Baseball season. The Ladner native and Seattle Mariners pitcher returned home Wednesday to pay a visit to the students at Hawthorne Elementary, his former school, as part of the Mariners Moose Dream Team caravan. It’s annual program where players and Mariners’ staff visit schools throughout the Pacific Northwest stressing the importance of the ‘Dream’ principles: Drug-free, Respect for yourself and others, Education through reading, Attitude, and Motivation to achieve your dreams. Prior to the school-wide assembly that also featured pitcher Cody Martin, infielder Dan Vogelbach, broadcaster Aaron Goldsmith and the Mariners Moose mascot, Paxton spent some time with the Optimist to talk about the excitement of coming home, spring training and the upcoming season. Paxton said visiting his former elementary school was pretty surreal. “I come up here several times a year to visit with family and friends, but this is the first time that I’ve come back with the Mariners,” he said. “I was telling the guys on the bus I remember playing soccer on the back field and telling them about the school and friends’ houses that are close by. It definitely takes me back.” Paxton and the Mariners were guests of the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night at Rogers Arena when the Canucks hosted Nashville. He also made an appearance on TSN 1040 radio Wednesday morning. “It’s been a lot of fun. A real quick visit, but it’s going to be fun seeing the kids,” Paxton said. Pitchers and catchers report to camp on Feb. 14 in Peoria, Ariz. Paxton plans to head down to Arizona at the end of the month to start his bullpen sessions. “I’ve been throwing and working out. Feeling really good and excited to get the season started,”

Wednesday’s visit to Hawthorne Elementary school produced plenty of smiles for Seattle Mariners pitcher and former student James Paxton. he said. It has been a busy off-season for the 6’4” left-hander. He got married in November and after a quick honeymoon, has been hitting the gym hard and getting in shape. He said he started throwing again in mid-December. Paxton made 20 starts for the Mariners last season allowing three earned runs or fewer in 15 of his starts. He finished with a record of 6-7, but went 3-2 down the stretch with a 3.23 ERA and 56 strikeouts in his final nine starts. “The first bit of the season was tough for me. I struggled. I had a rough spring training, so I needed to go down to Triple A and figure a few things out,” Paxton said. “But I learned a lot and made some big adjustments and felt once I got back up to the big leagues, I was in a really good place and took some big strides forward, so I’m looking forward to keeping that going this season.” Once in Arizona, Paxton said he wants to concentrate on

repeating his delivery, getting his breaking ball, changer and cutter up to speed and continuing to work on fielding his position. “I know what their [Seattle’s] expectations are for me. I’ve been working out at Safeco and had conversations with my pitching coach, but I’m sure we will get into more specific baseball talk as spring training comes along. I expect to be in a position to help this team win every time I take the mound,” Paxton said. The Mariners have had a busy off-season as general manager Jerry Dipoto has made numerous trades to help bolster a team that finished with a record of 86-76 in the always-tough American League west. It was a 10-game improvement under manager Scott Servais, but Paxton said he feels the new players and makeup of the team is now poised to take the next step — getting into the postseason. “There have been a lot of moves, a lot of change. I think the

team looks really good,” Paxton said. “Jerry’s done a great job of putting together a good roster. I think the pitching staff is going to be strong. We have strong starting pitching, lots of options in the bullpen. “As far as the position players, we have the core guys that are coming back to have great years like they usually do, but I think the thing that has changed for us the most is the speed in our outfield. They are really fast and cover a lot of ground and on the base paths, their speed will really change the game for us too, stealing bases and reeking havoc.” Paxton said the division is going to be tough, but feels the team is in a great position to compete every night. “It’s a battle no matter who you are playing. It’s a good division and I think we stack up really well against these teams and will go out there and show that this year and really get ourselves towards the top,” he said.

has made his hometown a major part of the Giants’ operations with the Ladner Leisure Centre being the team’s training and practice facility. Players also are billeted in the South Delta area. Toigo served as a major catalyst in the success of the 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship, which was hosted in Vancouver, Kamloops and Kelowna. He is also set to dive back into the World Junior Championship scene as an organizer on the committee for the 2019 World Junior Championship, which will be co-hosted by Vancouver and Victoria. On top of that, Toigo’s Giants hosted and claimed the

2007 MasterCard Memorial Cup – yet another event the Giants’ president and owner had a hand in. Lazarowich worked more than 2,000 NHL games as a linesman after crafting his skill through B.C. minor hockey and the WHL. The 54-year-old officiated his final NHL game last April in Winnipeg. Other inductees in the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2017 include former Vancouver Canucks Thomas Gradin and Tony Tanti, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager and former Canucks GM Dave Nonis, broadcaster John Shannon and the1996-97 Allen Cup champion Powell River Regals.
