Trees fail to get proper protection
Down and dirty!
After winning in small claims court, resident is critical of Delta’s efforts SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta’s tree protection bylaw doesn’t offer much protection at all, says a Tsawwassen resident who took the municipality to court and won. “It’s a complete and utter joke. Delta happily collects money for a permit but they’re not doing their job — period,” said Beth Miller. Miller’s case involved the removal of trees that lined 10A Avenue in Tsawwassen, a move that sparked outrage from neigh-
bouring homeowners. The trees in question were located within the Royal Oaks development, a portion of which backs onto 10A Avenue. The trees were on private property and the strata council applied for, and obtained, a permit to remove 34 of them. As part of the permit, Royal Oaks had to plant 33 replacement trees. However, neighbouring residents wondered how a permit to remove so many trees could have been issued. JUDGE: see Page 3

Usipiuk said there were multiple critical defects and that the vehicle was not roadworthy. The license plates were seized and the trailer was impounded on the spot. Police set up checkpoints at different locations monthly.

Delta farmers pleased new provincial regulations level the playing field IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta farmers are pleased that new provincial regulations will ensure food sold as organic lives up to its name. “There is accountability now,” said Harvie Snow, who runs Snow Farms with his wife Susan. “If they are making a claim that they are organic and selling an organic product, then they should be held to that standard.” Snow said organic farmers who have all the proper certification and have been marketing their products as such have to constantly compete with others who claim to be organic when, in fact, they’re not. “At the end of the day with these new regulations it creates a level playing field. We all have to meet a basic minimum standard,” he said. Cait Murphy, communications coordinator for the Earthwise Society, said the Boundary Baybased organization that promotes eco-friendly gardening and farming is supportive of the new organic food regulations. She said Earthwise hopes the new regulations will encourage more peo-

They’re pleased the provincial government has introduced regulations that ensure organic growers meet certain standards. ple to support ecological food production. “When you choose to buy organics, you are supporting farming that enriches the soil, supports biodiversity and contributes to healthy ecosystems,” Murphy said. “People’s purchasing decisions are one way to effect real change and the new regulations will help to strengthen consumer confidence in the integrity of
organic food. “The new regulations will also protect consumers and certify that people are really buying what they think they are buying. Earthwise knows from our own experience that organic farming costs more because it is very labour intensive, but we believe people are willing to pay the extra cost if they feel confident in the integrity of the product.”
The regulations, under the new Food and Agricultural Products Classification Act, allow for terms such as organic to be used only if and when specific certification standards have been met. After September 2018, if a product is being marketed as organic in B.C., it will have to be from a producer who has successfully been accredited through a federal or provincial certifica-
tion program. The transition time to September 2018 allows non-certified producers that wish to continue to market their products as organic time to complete the certification process. The regulations were developed following extensive consultation with B.C.’s organic growers, 80 per cent of which agreed on the need for new requirements.
Judge found Delta had breached its duty of care
CONTINUED from Page 1 Miller filed a lawsuit in small claims court against Delta and the arborist, claiming 27 perimeter pines were removed contrary to the bylaw. She found out last month she had won, the judge finding Delta had breached its duty of care, but the award was limited to $3,000. Miller also filed for a judicial review in B.C. Supreme Court. said, is that her immediate neighbour recently removed a couple trees that shouldn’t have been cut down, which will prompt another lawsuit. Municipal politicians recently debated whether to revisit Delta’s tree legislation, and even though they ultimately decided against doing so, they did ask staff for an update on the tree loss situation. Miller said a big problem is the municipality
automatically takes any arborist’s report at face value and she doesn’t believe the bylaws department is closely monitoring the situation or acting on the existing bylaw. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the tree cutting bylaw, but it’s not being followed at all and the fact Delta approved trees removed right next door to me, right in the middle when I was in a lawsuit with them,
shows you just how completely out to lunch they are, or they don’t care,” she said. Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz told the Optimist Delta will be taking a look at the judgment to see whether it will appeal. He added Delta is upholding the bylaw. “About two years ago we changed it from a tree removal bylaw to a tree protection bylaw. That’s a pretty significant change
in terms of thrust and direction because now we have much stiffer penalties and much stiffer fines and much stiffer requirements,” he said. “We take replanting seriously as well. The municipality in 2015 managed to plant about 600 new trees. We’re now well over a thousand new trees in 2016, so we’re going hard at planting trees wherever we can plant them.”

Seaspan welcomes first of its two hybrid ferries Turkish vessel runs on diesel, LNG and battery IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
It has only been a little over a month, but already Seaspan Ferries Corporation is seeing a big difference in its fleet with the arrival of the Seaspan Swift, the first of two new dual-fueled/hybrid (diesel, liquefied natural gas and battery) ferries. The state-of-the-art vessel, currently docked at Seaspan’s Tilbury terminal in Delta, arrived after an eight-week journey in early December that spanned a total of 10,661 nautical miles following its construction in Turkey. The 148.9-metre ferry, which can accommodate up to 59 trailers, went through a series of regulatory inspections and crew training programs throughout December and early January. The vessel

had its first operational test run last Sunday. “The vessel is in full service with our fleet,” said Seaspan vice president Steve Roth. “We have a few little bugs that we are continuing to work out and we expect the second vessel when she comes over will be able to get into service quicker because she is a twin and hopefully we will have learned a few things from the first one.” The Seaspan Swift, along with its sister ship, the Seaspan Reliant, marks the first vessels added to Seaspan’s fleet since 2002. The Seaspan Reliant is nearing completion and undergoing testing and trials in Turkey. It is expected to arrive in Tilbury at the end of February. “For us the need was to replace a very old fleet. When you do that it allows
us to take advantage of the new technology. The vessels we were running here were 40 to 50 years old,” said Roth, adding both vessels will be based in Tilbury. “The vessels are a bit of a game changer as they are unique in North America and also unique with the fact we are using LNG as the primary fuel, but we also have diesel and a battery component as well, so we really have three fuel sources. It definitely raises the bar, particularly from an environmental perspective because these have a significantly less greenhouse gas footprint then a diesel vessel.” Seaspan Ferries Corporation operates a fleet of seven ferries out of five terminals in B.C. and supplies more than 50 per cent of all cargo to Vancouver Island.

Suite owners not keen on new civic policies Water meters ensure everyone pays fair share IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The Corporation of Delta is making changes to its secondary suites program, but they’re not sitting well with some landlords. The changes include the installation of water meters, an introduction of an annual fee for suites with an occupancy permit and the end of statutory declarations. Tsawwassen resident Davina McKaig and her family were one of the first homes to legalize a secondary suite when Delta started its program in 2010. During the past six years, McKaig said they have complied with all the regulations and done everything to ensure their suite was legal, but just when they think everything is OK, there’s another hurdle put in front of them. “From day one we were encouraged to be in this program and we were proud to be one of the first 10, but in the end what does that mean for someone who follows the rules?” she asked. “There are 4,200 suites that they have identified that are not legal, so I wonder what about those people? “As a citizen who follows the rules, and that’s what we have done from day one, it’s really disconcerting that we took months,
paid our dues and paid financially for what we thought would be great for our future and then it took 17 days to have someone on our front lawn looking at installing a water meter.” Another resident who wrote to mayor and council, and copied her letter to the Optimist, feels it’s unfair to have to pay extra fees now that Delta is eliminating statutory declarations from the program.
“We have complied with all directives from the Corporation (of Delta). Our suite is legal and has an occupancy permit. We did this with the understanding that with a statutory declaration stating that the suite was family occupied would exempt us from the fees listed in your letter, including double utility fees and an additional $300 annual fee,” wrote Phyllis Hamilton. “The entire home, including a legal suite, contains four people, therefore our use of municipal services is no greater than most families in Delta.”
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION February Is your child turning FIVE in 2017? KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION BEGINS IN FEBRUARY
According to Delta, the goal of the changes is to further improve occupant safety and ensure all homes with secondary suites are paying an equitable amount. “We made a change last year to our water service bylaw that requires all properties with secondary suites to be metered and that’s really about equity,” said director of engineering Steve Lan. “We are phasing out all the statutory regulations. If you don’t have anyone living there with the meter you will pay less, but if you do, you will pay more. They are paying their fair share and that’s really what it is all about. “We have had problems in the past with statutory declarations that were not all accurate and there were still people living there. This way we capture everyone and everyone pays a fair share.” Lan said he expects 800 meters will be installed in secondary suites in the coming months. According to Delta, installation of a water meter will be at no cost to the property owner. Until a meter is installed, the property will be charged an annual flat utility bill for both the principal dwelling and the suite.

Shred-a-thon guards against identity theft
Annual event set for tomorrow in Tsawwassen
As the year begins, it’s a great time to make a resolution to keep your confidential information safe from those who prey on unsuspecting citizens. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in North America and an important step to prevent it is to properly destroy any sensitive information. Urban Impact is sponsoring a “shred-a-thon” in Tsawwassen tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Delta Gymnastics Society. “This is the fifth year hosting this shredding event and it is a service that our community and local business members have started to rely on,” said Ana Arciniega, executive director of Delta Gymnastics. “This is the perfect time of the year as we prepare for tax season, to clean up office drawers, storage rooms and files and bring them for safe disposal.” Identity theft is a form of stealing an individual’s personal or business information to access resourc-

bring in their bags and boxes of documents to shred behind the Tim Hortons in Tsawwassen where an Urban Impact shredding truck will be stationed. Donations will be accepted by members of Delta Gymnastics who will assist with the removal of boxes. The shred-a-thon will be set up in a way that will allow people to drive through. Shredding of credit card statements, payroll information, tax returns and more is recommended.

TED MURPHY
he Delta Police Department’s recent analysis of Ladner Trunk Road collisions reinforces what we know but are reluctant to
change. After three fatal crashes in 2016 along the stretch of Ladner Trunk from the Highway 99 junction to Scott Road, the department decided to take a threeyear look to determine the scope of accidents in that area and the reasons behind them. Is there something about the road design that’s at fault? The analysis found 44 crashes over that time period, but, not surprisingly, concluded that, generally speaking, driver error, not road design, was to blame. Given it’s a straight, flat strip of asphalt, save for the hill west of Scott Road, the findings are to be expected, but in many ways they come as discouraging news. If there were an engineering issue with the road, a failing that was responsible for a portion of the crashes, it could be addressed and the accident rate would presumably fall. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Actually, the solution is quite simple, but getting drivers to change their behaviour is much easier said than done. It must be disheartening for police officers to respond to collision after collision knowing that all the education and awareness campaigns urging drivers to slow down and remove distractions still aren’t getting through, at least not to everybody. It’s why police Chief Neil Dubord issued a challenge to drivers this week to take it upon themselves to make Delta’s roads the safest in B.C. That’s because drivers hold all the cards in this situation. Although there are measures that could be undertaken — reducing the speed limit, banning passing, placing a median down the middle, etc. — to make Ladner Trunk a less dangerous stretch of road, at the end of the day there’s only so much that can be done to save us from ourselves. The narrow, two-lane road carries more traffic than intended, but even so, it’s still a straight, flat strip that shouldn’t be the site of so much carnage. The number of fatalities in 2016 was most definitely an anomaly, but the police department analysis underlined a disturbing pattern of crashes. That has the ability to change but it’s going to take everyone using that route to get on board.
ICBC’s claims philosophy is in need of a complete overhaul
F
ew readers recall the angry mood of B.C. motorists directed at the private automobile companies prior to
1974. High premiums, uninsured vehicles, draconian rating practices, limited coverage, harsh cancellation policies and unfair treatment of injury claims resulted in a change of government and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. ICBC initially addressed many past criticisms. Mandatory coverage tied to the vehicle licence plate ensured few, if any, uninsured vehicles and supplementary coverage provided additional protection. Underwriting practices of ICBC and its networking across the province ensured excellent customer sales and service and vehicle repairs. Suffice to say, finding of fault, evaluating injury or loss of life is a complex subject. Claims of this nature are resolved by highly trained personnel and lawyers via negotiations, mediation or trial. Approximately three per cent of all litigation files are historically settled by trial. ICBC’s “Achilles heel” is its current handling of injury claims. Its policy of accident benefits and “no-fault” coverage is inadequate and is secondary coverage to all private plans, even MSP coverage. A disabled employed person is eligible for $15,600 P.A. for two years maximum, near welfare rates. Claimants requiring medi-
Community Comment DOUG HUSBAND
cally necessary treatment are not fully compensated for incurred expense until settlement years later. Death and funeral benefits lack proper coverage. An updated “primary package” of no-fault benefits is necessary for universal coverage. In years past ICBC was a leading innovator in settling bodily injury claims. The introduction of alternative dispute mechanisms, emphasis on customer service, and reimbursement of out of pocket expense and wage loss facilitated early settlements. In 1988, ICBC introduced mediation as an option to trial with the injured party at the negotiating table, which proved highly successful for all parties. Insurance companies and law firms across Canada soon followed suit. The judiciary and academic institutions supported the process with public approval. Twenty years later this fundamental program was abandoned by ICBC. In 2008, a new claims regime issued a directive of more
trials, historically an expensive non-winner for all parties. This cultural shift and changes in senior claims personnel were extreme. Staff authorities were arbitrarily reduced or deleted. Claims are now adjudicated by committee with loss of individual accountability. File authority is invested in a select few. Little attention is applied to counsel’s recommendations. Using ICBC’s latest statistical data from 2008 to 2014, legal representation is up by 20 per cent in six years. Settlements and costs have risen by as much as 45 per cent. This unacceptable increase is solely due to a change in claims philosophy. In 2014, injury settlements and litigation expense totalled $1.5 billion. Trial delays have resulted in file backlog. There is a direct correlation between settlement delays and escalating severities and costs. Rumours abound over poor staff morale and the public is concerned over rising premiums and settlement delays. A review is required of its claims philosophy and practices as rising severities and costs are unacceptable. The injured motoring public should not be threatened by an expensive trial or unnecessary delays in receiving rightful benefits and adequate compensation And a good night to you, Dave. Doug Husband is a former manager with ICBC and a retired senior commercial mediator. He’s also a former mayor of Delta.

Editor: Re: Due diligence done on bridge, letter to the editor, Jan. 20 The need for a new crossing is not in question. The consultation process did not mention that the bridge would be built on silt and not bedrock. This is a $3.5-billion gamble in our earthquake prone zone. The public was expected to decide from a limited amount of information which was biased towards the bridge option. If, as Transportation Minister
Todd Stone states, the bridge option is not needed to accommodate larger container ships, then a tunnel option makes more sense. All crossings are at capacity and experience significant gridlock, which brings me to the conclusion that dedicated transit crossings are the solution. The $3.5 billion should be used for above ground light rail transit from Richmond to White Rock and to the ferry terminal through a tunnel solely dedicated to light
rail. Bikes could be transported on the rail cars. The George Massey Tunnel can be maintained as usual and then replaced in 10 to 30 years. The new transit-only tunnel could be placed beside or near the Massey Tunnel or even moved upstream to cross near Riverport. A new transit crossing will significantly reduce traffic in the tunnel while reducing thousands of carbon-emitting cars. It would make for a much more pleasant commute. Shelley Bevandick

Challenging minister’s statements
Editor: Re: Due diligence done on bridge, letter to the editor, Jan. 20 I must challenge two misleading statements contained in the letter from Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. 1. “We surveyed British Columbians about the options and were told a bridge was preferred.” Since when do major decisions involving huge expenditures call for
residents to make the selection? Surely the preferred choice should have been selected following recommendations to cabinet based on a cost/benefit analysis conducted by a suitably qualified consulting professional engineering firm. The public does not have the expertise nor the data necessary to make an informed choice. 2. “Nor will replacing the tunnel with a bridge increase the size of ships...” Here, the minister has
the wrong part of the ship, since the fact the new bridge will be about the same height as the Alex Fraser Bridge has nothing to do with the present size limitation. That is due to the clearance between the top of the tunnel and the keel of the ship. It appears the political decision was made for an important reason, but we have not heard what it is yet — even though it is fairly obvious. Sid Berman

Tsawwassen Mills is celebrating Chinese New Year with a family event tomorrow. Part of the Shop Your Way to China promotion, which includes a grand prize of a trip to China, the mall will get everyone in a festive spirit with special traditional entertainment. A lucky lion dance will be held in the promo court at Entry 3 from 4 to 4:30 p.m. The dance troupe will then proceed throughout the mall until 6 p.m. to “bless” participating stores and bestow prosperity and good fortune upon them. “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming our guests to this festival to create a memorable family experience,” said Tsawwasssen Mills marketing director Kristina Shier. “We think everyone will enjoy the traditional Lion Dance and the grand prize.” For more on the Shop Your Way to China campaign, visit tsawwassenmills.com.
ANNUAL CLEARANCE SALE
Merry was found in Tsawwassen being attacked by a cat. Right away we knew Merry needed help and we rushed her to the vet where it was discovered during her tussle with the cat her right eye had been lacerated. Initially we thought Merry would end up losing the eye but after a consult with a veterinary ophthalmologist we decided we would try to save her eye. Merry has been the perfect bunny patient during her recovery as she’s needed lots of handling and medication, something most bunnies wouldn’t tolerate. Merry is truly a special rabbit and despite all our handling still greets us at the front of her kennel when we enter the room. Merry has a soft spot for veggies and kale seems to be her favourite. This beautiful pointed rabbit is already getting a hang of litter box training. We’re unsure if Merry would tolerate a bunny friend and likely won’t try introducing her to other rabbits until her eye is fully recovered and she’s spayed.

live in this new time. The words of the ancient prophet ring in our ears. The prophet asks, “With what shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before God on high?” What shall I offer God, how shall I live? The answer becomes a clear and simple call, “He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6: 6,8) So let’s begin anew every day — and all the days to come — to affirm our calling to do justice, to love kindness and walk humbly with God!

Sacred Heart Catholic Church
The Bible is full of stories of “new beginnings.” In the first pages we read of God who creates the heaven and earth and breathes new life. Then we begin again after the flood with Noah and his family. In our shared history, Abraham answers the invitation of God to go away from home and begin anew. The Bible presents us with beginnings over and over again, until at the end a holy city comes down from heaven to earth, and its name is not Jerusalem, but New Jerusalem, for it is a place to begin, the start of what will be forever new built under God’s rule and love.

Auxiliary donation buys stretchers for hospital IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
The medical imaging department at Delta Hospital has two new ergonomically sound ultrasound stretchers and it has the Delta Hospital Auxiliary to thank. Late last month, the stretchers, at a cost of $11,500, were delivered to the hospital. Andreas Hochstrasser, site coordinator of medical imaging, said there was a big need from the patient side and from a staff perspective to get this new equipment. “The benefits are really patient safety, ease of use and getting on and off the stretcher, which was very difficult before,” Hochstrasser said. “Patient comfort is another thing. We had one stretcher that was outdated and another one that we had safety concerns with. These are ideal. We are very appreciative and enthusiastic to have these

He said medical literature suggests that 80 per cent of sonographers seek medical treatment for these kinds of work-related injuries. “By having the best possible equipment (and this includes proper stretchers) available to our staff at Delta Hospital, we can
minimize the risk of a musculoskeletal injury occurring,” he added. Auxiliary president Robbi Schultes said once the group learned of the need, it was happy to step up. “If we are able to provide this equipment, we want to do that,” she said. “They are so important to the safety of patients and staff and we are very fortunate that we can support the needs of the hospital in this way.”

Pop-up display and presentation on 1845 Franklin Expedition coming to Ladner DAVE WILLIS

pop-up display and a presentation on the ill-fated 1845 Franklin Expedition will take place in Ladner next week. Vancouver Maritime Museum programs coordinator Talya Mallek, who will give a talk titled The Franklin Expedition and its Legacy, says it will provide context to Sir John Franklin’s famous voyage within the history of the quest for the Northwest Passage. “The talk will delve into the 170-year-old mystery of what happened to Sir John Franklin and his men through evidence found by subsequent explorers, as well as details of the modern-day discoveries of the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror,” says Mallek in an email to the Optimist. The wreck of the HMS Erebus was discovered by an expedition led by Parks Canada in 2014 in Nunavut while the HMS Terror was found last September. After the talk guests will have a chance to see and touch different reproductions of artifacts from the HMS Erebus. They include an illuminator, a Blue Willow Pattern plate, a small 3D replica of the HMS Erebus bell and a reproduction

Mallek says the popup display includes text, images and two digital touch-screens where visitors can view videos about the history and modernday search. “The pop-up display puts the mysteries of Franklin’s tragic voyage
into a historical context of science and exploration, looking at reasons behind the expedition and clues from early search efforts, and connects visitors to contemporary Arctic investigation, presenting the methodologies and findings of ongoing scientific research in Canada’s North.” Mallek notes the display is the cornerstone
of The Franklin Network Outreach Project, an innovative, three-year initiative helmed by the Royal Ontario Museum, in collaboration with Parks Canada and the History Museums Network. The presentation is set for Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Port of Vancouver Delta Community Office at Trenant Park Square. The
exhibit is on display there from Feb. 1 to 4. Those interested in attending the free presentation are asked to RSVP by Jan. 31 online at portvancouver.com/delta, by phone at 604-665-9636 or in person at the community office, 5225A Ladner Trunk Rd. Photographer Allen Bargen to speak at local club Allen Bargen will be giving a presentation titled In Search of a Better Photograph next Wednesday at a Delta Photo Club meeting. Bargen, who specializes in nature and sports photography, is past president and educator of the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA) and has lectured and judged throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. The presentation is meant to appeal to individuals who would like guidance on how to make their images better in the
field, rather than in post processing. It deals with the importance of critical values of imagery via comprehensive explanations supported by visual examples. Through these examples, Bargen will touch on the fundamentals of: light/ shadow, composition, exposure, subject, story, colour, contrast, sharpness and depth of field. Bargen will further discuss why you should take more than one image, use different exposures, and consider other in-field options. As well, he’ll provide
examples of what those changes can do to a photograph. The Delta Photo Club meets Wednesdays at KinVillage Community Centre at 7 p.m. (socializing and setup) with a 7:30 p.m. start. Guests are welcome. For more information, visit the club’s website at www.deltaphotoclub.com. SUBMITTED PHOTO

The write way to reflect on everyday life An Art-full Life
MEG & MARY ANN
“Your words are the bricks and mortar of the dreams you want to realize. Your words are the greatest power you have. The words you choose and their use establish the life you experience.” — Sonia Choquette Whether we are young or old, we all have a story to tell, something to express and to offer the world. Writing activities, and in particular reflective writing, fosters our creativity which is driven by our life experiences. A growing body of research finds that writing about our responses to events, situations or new information can have a variety of health benefits.
Reviewing aspects of our lives (its setbacks and positive aspects) can help manage stress, anxiety and depression, improve mood, self-esteem and positive thinking, help process broken relationships, help ease symptoms associated with trauma, chronic pain and illness, and even strengthen our immune system. Writer Ann Turkle says that, in effect, journaling “becomes a record of generous attention paid to the immediate moment.” Setting aside time to write and reflect helps us make sense of the world around us, validates our experiences, helps us regroup and find balance in our busy lives, and be a vehicle for decision making, change and growth. By writing, we have the opportunity to build a blueprint, a moral compass by which we live and how we treat others. If journal writing helps us become better communicators, how do we get started? 1. Begin with a gracious heart: writing for ourselves

Remind yourself there is not a right or wrong way to write reflectively; it’s a “space for questions that may not have answers, a place for thoughts that may otherwise not have a home and a safe container for emotions so that they do not have to be loose in the world.” (Kelly Brown) Why not give it a try. It could be good for you!
Thank-you
Thank-you Thank-you The Fisherman’s Hall was fairly bursting with guests and volunteers that enjoyed themselves playing games, connecting with others, and once again listening to the voice of an angel, our very own Rachael Chatoor. We were overwhelmed, and so grateful for the generosity of the folks and businesses in our villages of Ladner, Tsawwassen, and even Richmond, Langley and Abbotsford. Each and every one of you contributed to making this 2017 Community Christmas dinner such a success! Thank you to all the volunteers that showed up with such enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to make a difference. Your kindness and loving support was so much appreciated! You did an amazing job, from spreading the word, setting up and decorating the hall, organizing the parking, giving rides, serving the food, mingling with the guests, to helping us clean-up the hall! Special thanks to Angelo and Lynne of Vagellis Grill in Ladner for opening their hearts and their kitchen, which allowed this whole event to run so smoothly. Numbers were up considerably from our first year! Once again any leftover food was boxed up into hot dinners, and sandwiches, which were taken to the downtown Eastside. A perfect ending to a wonderful evening, knowing that we reached out to so many people, and made a difference in their memory of this special day. The Brown family, their amazing friends, and community were once again so happy to share their Christmas Day paying it forward!

20 things you should know about exercise Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
Did you know that stretching before a workout could do you more harm than good? Or, that push ups are one of the worst exercises you can perform if you have shoulder pain? Here are some other important tips you should know about exercise for 2017: 1. It takes only two weeks to lose your strength. The moral here is keep moving — even when on holidays. 2. You can’t spot reduce. You cannot burn fat from one area of the body with an exercise. 3. Exercise will keep your immune system sharp. 4. Exercise keeps your energy levels up. Exercise releases endorphins (your feel-good hormones) into your bloodstream, and it’s these little guys that will help you feel more energized for the rest of the day. 5. Music can help quicken your pace. Music actually helps move you. It is also distracting, making it possible for us to go longer. 6. Shorter, yet more intense, workouts can be just as effective as longer
workouts. You don’t need to exercise for an hour to see results. 7. Stretching before a workout can actually be harmful. Holding a static stretch longer than 60 seconds could harm your performance and lead to injury. 8. Exercise can boost your brain power. Exercise increases serotonin in the brain, which leads to improved mental clarity. 9. Stressed? Exercise. A good ol’ sweat session produces a relaxation response within the body and elevates your mood. This can also keep depression at bay. 10. Combine life with exercise. Run or bike to work (if you can), walk to the grocery store, schedule walking meetings. 11. Exercise before you go home. Schedule your workouts first thing in the morning, or before you go home from work for more success at sticking to your workout routine. 12. Exercise helps ease the aging process. Regular exercise can help prevent osteoporosis, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and loss of muscle mass. 13. Lifting weights can decrease back pain. Multi-joint movements like squats and lunges work the core, as well as help to open up tight hips which will mean you are less likely to develop back problems. 14. Exercise can boost your metabolic rate — especially weight training. Due to the increased lean muscle tissue you develop with weight training, you
will burn more calories throughout the course of the day. 15. Women recover faster when exercising. Ladies recover faster in an exercise session than men because we are able to regenerate ATP, the chemical that provides the energy for muscle movement, faster than the boys do. 16. Exercise can help prevent injuries. Most injuries come from overuse — repetitive use of the joints by muscles that are imbalanced. Weight training, core training, bodyweight exercises, Pilates and yoga will strengthen those muscles. 17. Aerobic exercise can create new brain cells. Aerobic exercise increases the supply of an important protein responsible for protecting the brain neurons, and promoting the growth of new nerve cells. 18. Muscle burns three times more calories than fat. So, lift baby, lift. 19. You burn more calories in the 23 hours outside of your workout than during your workout. Shift your attention away from your workout session and focus on how you can move your body more throughout the rest of the day. 20. Muscles grow while you sleep. In the deep and restorative stages of sleep is when your muscles relax and the blood flow to the muscles increases. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer. Focus on
Seniors How to Have a Happy,
Healthy & Spiritually Fulfilled Old Age
Aging is a time to be celebrated as much as any other time in the full cycle of life and it’s a time when we can find deep selffulfillment and happiness. For many people, it’s the first time in their lives where they have the chance to fully live without being burdened by the expectations and ideas of others who have impacted them throughout life. Yet, it’s crucial that you don’t confuse self-realization with the mere acting out of external needs, for such needs are shortterm and lack deep fulfillment. To be truly happy in the depths of your soul, inner happiness must be cultivated too and it is never too late to learn how. Don’t conform to age stereotypes. If you enjoy something, get out and do it. If health problems interfere, find ways to work
around them and still get into the things that matter to you. Associate with groups of diverse people, not all in your age group. Socializing with young people who share your interests is a good way to keep in balance and avoid getting socially sidelined. Practice the five principles of health. It might be tempting to say you’ve reached this point of life without worrying about your health habits but your best strategy for avoiding lengthy hospital stays, medical care, and nursing homes is to look after yourself as much as possible. Treasure the health you have now and give it a boost by making sure that you stick to the five basic principles of health: Eat healthy. This includes eating raw vegetables and fruit every day.

Avoid or quit unhealthy substances and habits. If you haven’t already done so, now is the ideal time to give up taking drugs, excess alcohol, smoking, and over-eating. Stay active. There are plenty of sports ideal for the older body, and many of these can also involve being around other people (and beautiful scenery if you choose your exercising location well). Try sports like walking, jogging, swimming, yoga, and aqua aerobics to maintain an optimal fitness level. Practice positive thinking. Take up meditation. If you’re not already meditating, this is the perfect time to start. It will settle your mind and any unrest like nothing else.

Private schools aren’t just for the wealthy
Other independent school myths also debunked
There’s much confusion and misunderstanding when it comes to independent schools, so here’s some myth-busting information: Myth #1: Private schools are only for the wealthy. Fact: Not just for the elite, a growing number of Canadian independent schools are trying to attract the best and brightest by beefing up their financial aid and scholarship programs. “One of the top myths right now is that independent schools are not as accessible as they actually are,” says Anne-Marie Kee, executive director of the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools, noting that millions of dollars in financial aid are distributed to families in Canada each year. “I think it’s worthwhile for parents to take time to inquire about really understanding what the value is for the tuition and what kind of financial assistance is available to families each year.” In fact, 85 per cent of students attending Ontario’s independent schools are from lower to middle class families, according to Barbara Bierman, executive director of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools. Myth #2: All private schools are alike. Fact: Parents need to do their research to find the best fit for their child because Canada has thousands of independent schools — each one
varying in character, philosophy, values, cultures, programs and missions. “Not all schools are the same,” says Kee. “Each school has an individual vision, mission and set of values, so it’s really valuable for parents to find out about the values of the school and if they’re aligned with the values of the family to see if that child is going to be successful in that environment.” Just because it’s an independent school doesn’t necessarily mean any one will be right for your child, she adds. Myth #3: Teachers in private schools are not well qualified and the schools are not accountable. Fact: In most provinces, private schools that receive provincial funds must hire only certified teachers, says Michael Zwaagstra, co-author of What’s Wrong with Our Schools and How We Can Fix Them. Many schools have their own accountability systems through a governance structure, such as a board. While not all independent schools across Canada are required to follow the government curriculum, many meet or exceed provincial standards. Myth #4: Independent schools weaken public education. Fact: In all jurisdictions where governments have financially supported school choice, they have also retained their com-
mitment to quality public education, Bierman says. “In North America, wherever provinces or states support school choice, over 90 per cent of all students still attend public schools,” she adds. “There is a growing body of evidence which shows increased levels of student achievement and parental satisfaction in all schools, including public schools, when parents are truly free to choose.” Myth #5: Independent schools lack diversity and isolate themselves from communities. Fact: More private schools are opening their doors to students of diverse backgrounds, with most offering scholarships, bursaries and financial aid. “I’ve seen the involvement of students and I have the opinion that independent schools indeed participate in social responsibility leading to the public good,” says Peter Froese, executive director of the Federation of Independent School Associations in Vancouver. “If you look and track the graduates coming out of private schools, they are very much involved in the political leadership of our province and our country, they are very much involved in social services, and they are very much involved in providing professional services to the community to sustain our society.” Article courtesy of ourkids.net.

Big first half leads Sabres past Pacers
Four days after their biggest win of the season, the Delta Pacers were promptly reminded of the parity in Fraser Valley “AAA” senior boys basketball. Coming off a 15-point exhibition victory over the No. 9 ranked MEI Eagles, the Pacers dropped a 69-55 home floor decision to the Guildford Park Sabres on Tuesday night to fall to 1-1 in Fraser Valley West League play. The Surrey school is quietly enjoying a solid campaign and promptly proved why the rankings mean so little. The Sabres blitzed the Pacers in the first half, opening up a 47-23 lead. Delta finally found its legs in the third quarter and put together a solid 10 minutes to cut the margin to 56-45. It was down to just six points (58-52) with 4:50 remaining when the Pacers offence became stagnant, allowing the visitors to seal the outcome. The loss was a blow to the Pacers’ hopes of repeating their first place finish and hosting the league playoff tournament. However, that should be the least of their concerns. The Sabres’ performance was eerily familiar to last year’s opening round playoff loss to North Delta when an unheralded team came into Ladner and promptly set the tone. The Pacers simply can’t afford to look past anyone. Their 87-72 win over MEI saw them go on a big second quarter run to break a 25-25 deadlock and open up a 55-40 halftime lead. Grade 12 standout Jas Singh led the surge. The Abbotsford school was playing its second game of the day after being a late entry in the Yale Tournament. Delta hosts Brookswood on Tuesday then will play three straight on the road.

The Ladner Pioneers are hoping to capitalize on a windfall of graduating junior talent. There is little doubt several standouts from the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champion Delta Islanders will be near the top of the board at next month’s WLA Draft. Jon Phillips, Evan Messenger, Chase Fraser, Brad Hofmann and Reece Callies are all expected to be selected in the early rounds. However, not every Islander graduate is heading to the senior “A” ranks. His move coincides with Kyle Goundrey becoming the juniors’ new head coach. “I’m sure Kyle would have made a position for me if I asked him to but I’m not a junior ‘A’ coach. South Delta A2 Storm battled Cloverdale A2 in PCAHA Fraser Valley Flight 3 Atom hockey action at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The visitors skated off with a 5-2 win, however, the Storm have since won three straight to improve to 8-8-2.
Ice Hawks topple Wolf Pack to close gap on 1st place Steelers Delta Ice Hawks picked up a muchneeded two points as they attempt to reel in the Grandview Steelers for top spot in the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s Tom Shaw Conference. Tetsuya Prior scored twice in the third period, including an insurance marker into an empty net, in the Ice Hawks 4-1 win over the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Tuesday in Ladner. The result moved Delta (26-11-0-1) within two points of Grandview, heading into last night’s road encounter with the Richmond Sockeyes. Alexander Methorst and Mark Trotman gave the hosts a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes and the score remaining that way until the third period. Jordan Naylor made 39 saves for the win. The Ice Hawks managed to pick-up just one of a possible four points last week
after dropping a 5-3 home ice decision to the Aldergrove Kodiaks and 3-2 double overtime setback to the Ridge Meadows Flames. Paul Georgeopoulos came back to haunt his former team, scoring unassisted in overtime to give the Flames a 3-2 win. The 18-year-old forward was traded earlier in the month for Brad Crompton. The Hawks at least managed to salvage an improbable point and force overtime thanks to a shorthanded goal by Trotman with just three seconds remaining. The visitors looked to be doomed after Gary Dhaliwal and Jordan Deyrmenjian were both accessed minors in the final two minutes. Jonathan Stein had the other Delta goal. The Sockeyes and Ice Hawks meet again on Tuesday in Ladner at 7:35 p.m.

DELIGHTFUL FAMILY HOME $995,000
Welcoming Teresa Cooper Frank Becir, Manager of Royal LePage Regency Reality Ltd. is pleased to welcome Teresa Cooper to our sales team. Teresa has lived, worked, volunteered, and raised four children in the South Delta community for the last 27 years. It is safe to say she knows her way around. What originally brought her to the south west corner of the lower mainland was a desire to be part of a real community, somewhere quiet, safe, with good schools and great people. Teresa’s passion for this community has led her to 27 years of community involvement, starting with Ladner Girls Soccer in her early days to 10 years with Tour de Delta to Executive Director of the Delta Hospital Foundation. Teresa has blended her volunteerism with her employment to continue to ensure a great community for families to work, live, and raise children. Teresa knows this community inside and out from the neighborhoods to the school to the people and she wants to take that knowledge and put it to good use by finding you a home you love. Teresa’s years of sales and marketing experience coupled with an innate ability to design strategy and get things done make her the perfect partner in selling your home and finding the next. Teresa loves a challenge and truly believes any project can be a success with the right plan and the right people to execute it. With a tireless work ethic and passion for client experience, Teresa is who you want on your side when it is time to make the big decisions. It’s this and more that makes Teresa your key to comfortable living in South Delta.

TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
