Flocking to see the spectacle An unusually large number of eagles drawing crowds to East Ladner IAN JACQUES

Nature lovers and amateur photographers are marveling at the site of an unusual increase in eagles in the skies above South Delta. People have been flocking to a hot spot near 72nd Street in East Ladner to take in the sight of the birds and snap photos. Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society raptor care manager Rob Hope

said there are usually quite a few eagles in the area between December and March, but admits there has been a huge increase in recent days. He said weather most likely played a factor in late 2015 when heavy rains caused water levels to rise, making it difficult for eagles to access their main food source — salmon. “This year the waters were very high so it was hard for the eagles to get the dead salmon because most of them were

washed out of the tributaries and into the Fraser,” said Hope. “Because there is an organic transfer station nearby and the landfill is only a few kilometres away, this has now become a secondary food source for the eagles.” Hope said with the abundance of organic food scraps at the transfer facility, there are lots of seagulls and ducks in the area and the eagles are preying on those birds for food. “The eagles are either stealing

the food from the seagulls or are just killing them,” he said. “There are probably a lot of rats and mice too, but for the most part, it’s the gulls and the ducks.” Hope said people should enjoy the eagles while they are in the area, but do it safely. “The only thing we ask is that people respect private property and stay off the road because the last thing we want is for anyone to be hit or killed when everyone is enjoying this magnificent thing that has been put on a

Mayor Malcolm Brodie and the City of Richmond should butt out of Delta’s business. That’s what an irate Coun. Bruce McDonald had to say at Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday, not mincing words with his response to a letter from Brodie to the B.C. Lottery Corporation conveying Richmond’s opposition to a potential casino in Delta. “Whether a casino comes to Delta or not, I

The December 2016 report notes that as the status of a gaming facility at the Delta Town & Country Inn site is unclear, Richmond council should take the clear position as being opposed to the casino as it would negatively affect Richmond in several ways, including drawing customers away from the River Rock. A location for the proposed casino still hasn’t been determined.

Liberals pull electoral reform off table

Consensus on new voting system didn’t emerge, but other changes coming to Fair Elections Act IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

The federal Liberals have decided not to move forward on electoral reform that would have potentially changed the way Canadians vote. The announcement was made Wednesday morning in Ottawa and while opposition parties immediately denounced the Liberal government for breaking its election promise, Delta MP Carla Qualtrough said the Liberals are committed to other changes that will strengthen the current voting system. “Electoral reform is

well beyond what voting system we employ,” Qualtrough said. “We are committed to making the changes that are before the House with respect to the Fair Elections Act, we are committed to making sure people will not be stopped from voting because they lack ID, or they don’t have proof of their address and under my portfolio we are committed to making elections more accessible for people with disabilities. There are a whole bunch of things that we can do to increase the confidence in our electoral reform system that we are moving ahead with.”

in my town hall that there was a general feeling that things needed to change, but when you unpacked it, people were left really uncertain about what that would be like with respect to the voting system.” Qualtrough added this has proven not to be as important an issue to many Canadians as the Liberal party originally thought. “People are concerned about their jobs, retirement, their kids’ education. It may be that this message around a lack of consensus means that we have to get down to doing the business that Canadians feel is important to them,” she said. “Yes, it’s a platform commitment we made, but I’m confident we explored all the avenues.”

letter issued to Minister of Democratic Institutions Karina Gould, released publicly Wednesday. Trudeau said despite all the work by the House of Commons Special Committee on Electoral Reform, outreach by MPs and engagement of Canadians through town hall meetings and the website mydemocracy.ca, a clear preference and a consensus did not emerge. “I have been a proponent for a long time of electoral reform, but I’m completely comfortable with the government’s direction on this because I agree with the assessment that there is no general consensus on the direction that we would go,” added Qualtrough. “Canadians were all over the map. Let me add my voice to the chorus of those saying thank you to Vicki Huntington for her service to our community over the past eight years. We have disagreed from time to time on issues, but I have never doubted her genuine commitment to the people of Delta South. She is a person of total integrity, something we need more of in politics, and I wish her the very best.

Vicki and I share an important quality: we both love Delta. I was born, raised, and continue to live on the Paton family farm which my grandfather homesteaded many decades ago. Delta has given so much to me and my family. Like Vicki, I want only what is best for our community.

Sweet Cola is a big, beautiful lady who was surrendered to the shelter as her family was moving and unable to bring her along. This friendly gal has lived with other cats and a small dog in the past but has had a bit of a hard time adjusting to all the commotion at the shelter. She tends to be a tad shy at first, but warms up with gentle coaxing and pets. This senior girl has really slowed down as she has some arthritis which is contributing to some other medical concerns that we think will resolve once she’s in a stable home. Currently Cola is on a special diet to keep her tummy happy and some medications in her food. This Miss has always been an indoor/outdoor cat and likes to hunt, though Cola likely do well as an indoor kitty with a nice patio to relax on in her retirement! Cola has a very thick coat and is a bit round so without regular brushing her coat can become matted. With people she knows, Cola is cuddly and likes to follow you around. We often find this beautiful girl curled up under her blankets napping away the day.

If elected, I will be an honest, authentic, and listening representative for this community on the issues that matter to us, including protecting farmland, good stewardship of our environment, improving our transportation inadequacies, and economic growth that enables us to take care of the people we love. I will knock on as many doors as I can in Delta South between now and election day on May 9th. I want to hear your concerns, and understand what matters to you.

Conference ignites their passion for education IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

Teachers from Delta and across Metro Vancouver had a chance to energize and ignite their passions for education at a unique mini-conference in Ladner recently. Modeled after the socalled Maker Movement in California, the second annual Delta Ignite conference brought more than 70 educators together in a relaxed atmosphere at the RiverHouse Restaurant and Pub on Jan. 19. As part of the Maker culture, people get together to design and build in a period of time, after which they tell the story of how it was built. Out of that came the Ignite presentation format, which according to Delta Secondary vice principal Dean Eichorn, who helped organize the event, is really catching on in the education world. “You have five minutes and out of that five minutes you have 20 slides, so the motto of Ignite is enlighten me, but make it quick, so you have this

story to tell and a very tight format in which to tell that story,” said Eichorn. “You have the presenters who are very focused to get their message across in five minutes and you have the audience who is laid back, relaxed and

enjoying themselves, so it’s an interesting dichotomy of presenter and audience.” Eichorn said the relaxed atmosphere and format of Ignite is unique and helps create a real buzz in the room. “Often times you will see Ignite as a chance to share some pollination, just people sharing some

of the great things they are doing in front of an audience,” he said. “Teachers, by and large, are a pretty humble crowd, they generally don’t go around bragging about the great things they are doing. This is an opportunity for teachers to showcase what they are doing and how successful it is.” The evening was broken into three presentation groups of four with the topics of inclusion, curriculum/ classroom and relationships. “I firmly believe that education is very much a relationship-centered and relationship-driven business and the better the relationships are between all the parties involved — students, teachers, parents, support staff — the better things are going to go,” Eichorn added. He said given the success of the event and the praise from school district senior staff and trustees, similar events will be planned for the near future.

Firefighters set to conquer stairclimb Team of 12 from Delta will be taking part in BC Lung Association fundraiser later this month IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

For many of us, just the thought of trying to climb the stairs of the 491-foot Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel would be a near impossible task. Now try attempting the feat in full firefighter turnout gear. A team of 12 from the Delta Fire Department will be doing just that alongside other fire departments from across the province and individuals from all walks of life at the 16th annual Climb the Wall: Stairclimb for Clean Air, a fundraiser for the BC Lung Association on Sunday, Feb. 26. According to team captain Eric Wilson, a few guys from the department have completed the event as individuals, but no one entered on this year’s team has taken part. “It might appear a bit daunting, but I think all the guys are looking forward to the challenge,” said Wilson. “Obviously one of the reasons is to maintain

Our job requires that we are physically fit, so this is a good way to train and maintain that. It’s also fun to test yourself against the other

departments and it’s such a good cause, raising money for the BC Lung Association.” All firefighters competing have to be in full

gear — boots, pants, coat (with liners intact) helmet, gloves and a selfcontained breathing apparatus worn throughout the entire event.

“You have to be suited up basically like you are going into a fire, so no short cuts,” added Wilson. “Hopefully everyone finishes using only the one

bottle of air.” Each firefighter participating had to pay a $50 entry fee and fundraise on top of that. The goal is to raise at least $100 per member or $1,200 as a team. From now until event day, team members will be getting together to train in turnout gear and without gear on the Fred Gingell Park stairs and at places like the stairs at fire hall No. 7 in Tilbury. “We are lucky that the department has very good equipment and lots of training opportunities,” said Wilson. “We plan to also reach out to some of the other area departments and set up a bit of an average time challenge just to have some fun and share in the camaraderie of the event.” For more information on the event or to make a pledge see: http://bcla.convio. net/site/TR/Events/ General?pg=entry&fr_ id=1081 and enter Delta Fire Rescue under the team name on the donation link.

t’s too late now given its days are numbered, but I wonder what might have been had the George Massey Tunnel received a little more TLC. There’s absolutely no doubt the four-lane, 58-year-old tube struggles mightily to handle 21st century traffic volumes, but let’s just say it hasn’t got a lot of help over the years. The counterflow system introduced decades ago went a long way to maximizing capacity at rush hour, but save for some more recent, and convoluted, HOV lanes, the tunnel has been left to cope on its own. I continue to be amazed at the freefor-all that passes for orderly merging on both sides of the river, a situation that must extend the commute time for thousands every day. Beyond the northbound HOV lane on the Delta side, merging seems to be a wheneveryou-want, wherever-you-want kind of exercise. I often wonder if this process was more methodical, either by greater definition of the lanes or metering highway access, how much time drivers could save daily. Not to pick on trucks that are a lifeblood of our economy, but I’m also curious what the situation would be like at the tunnel if they weren’t adding to the congestion at rush hour. I admit, that’s passenger vehicle selfishness talking, but if they were banned for a couple of hours in the morning and the afternoon, I’ve got to think there would be significant improvement to traffic flow. And then there’s the physical state of the tunnel. I realize it’s getting older, but does that mean it’s got to get darker and dingier too? I know those ceramic white tiles, which can be found in other tunnels and would surely aid in illumination, have never been in the budget, but now it seems light bulbs are also out of financial reach. No amount of tweaking is going to make the tunnel a long-term solution in these parts given its four lanes will always act as a funnel, but I can’t help but thinking this area-defining tube, as well as those that commute through it, deserved better. With construction of a bridge scheduled to start later this year, perhaps all that’s left is to use the situation at the tunnel as an example, a cautionary tale, of what could have been done to squeeze more life out of expensive infrastructure projects.

Grateful for riding’s champion

H

eading into election season, it might be time to count the blessings that we have already

received. In my last column, which warranted a response from the office of Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone, I laid out the many pitfalls and concerns facing the proposed George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project. This is just one of the many pressures driving unprecedented change in our community. This May, South Delta faces a provincial election that will impact the area for decades. Only this time around, we do so without the woman who has championed the many causes of this community at every turn. We do so without Vicki Huntington. Like many of you, I was shocked to hear that she would not be seeking re-election. Although many have said that an independent MLA cannot be an effective representative, Huntington’s record of defensible criticism and asking the hard questions speaks for itself. In my opinion, she has done an outstanding job bringing the concerns of South Delta to Victoria and she will be sorely missed. My respect for Huntington was cemented when I was working on the Friends of Delta Hospital campaign to save emergency surgical services in Delta. It was

Community Comment NICHOLAS WONG

her commitment to the hospital and her direct questions that got the doctors of the Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association a meeting with Minister of Health Terry Lake. She was also the one to table our 10,000-signature petition in the legislature that led to the strengthening of surgical services and future investment in the program. Huntington’s record of effectiveness extends into all areas of concern for South Deltans. She has consistently stood against corruption and fought for the democratic rights of all British Columbians. When Lake chose to dismiss the concerns of the Delta Division of Family Practice by saying the number of people seeking a GP in B.C. was decreasing, it was Huntington who brought to light that the shortage of physicians was actually getting worse (it had grown from 176,000 to 210,000). In September, when the prov-

ince invited the public to review and comment on the Port of Vancouver’s environmental impact statement for Terminal 2, but made it impossible to either see the details or submit a comment, it was Huntington who took a stand. Long before the New York Times article called B.C. the “Wild West” of Canadian political cash, Huntington was the one pushing the conversation to ban corporate and union donations, implementing donation caps and limiting donations to B.C. residents. She fought to secure money for dredging the river, against Elections BC compromising our right to a secret ballot, against the suppression of debate in the legislature, against rerouting the Kinder Morgan pipeline to Tsawwassen, against the lack of justification for the removal of the George Massey Tunnel, for the preservation of the Pacific Flyway, in support of the Point Roberts Radio tower coalition, and it was Huntington who revealed the government knew its changes to the ALC would reduce its independence. This constituency should be proud to have been represented by Huntington. I, for one, offer her my sincerest thanks and well wishes for wherever life takes her. Born and raised in the greatest place on Earth, Nicholas Wong is a 26-year-old political junkie who often wonders what’s “Wong” in Delta.

Grandma puts little strain on services from suite

Editor: I find the changes to Delta’s secondary suite program totally unfair and punishing for people who have a family member living in the suite but does not pay rent. Our daughter’s grandmother is 82 years old, somewhat independent and able to cook for herself and live in her environment. She has the benefit of seeing her grandchildren every day and our help anytime see needs it. We have no locked doors and no boundaries for

everyone who lives in the house. We did right by the Corporation of Delta years ago by requesting and having a water meter installed. We have been paying Delta religiously every quarter for water and sewage. We use one garbage can, which is consistently two-thirds full, along with two small bins and bags for recycling. We compost our grass clippings and eligible food waste in a bin in the backyard. We use Delta services on a very minimal scale.

Now Delta is going to charge us $300 per year we had never had to pay before for a sweet little old lady that has a very small “footprint” in regards to civic services. I do not understand how Delta can keep asking for more money at the expense of honest, hard-working people who are trying to support their elders. And by doing so, we save the province tens of thousands of dollars by not using government-run senior accommodations. Richard Krische

MLA is told improvements are on the way for Massey Tunnel

Editor: Both your paper and my office have been receiving complaints regarding the condition of the George Massey Tunnel. Last week, the regional director of highways kindly returned my call regarding the concern we all share about the present state of the tunnel and the impact it has on a growing lack of confidence when driving through it. I am pleased to say that, four days later, I received the following message: “… you should notice a

visible improvement in the lighting starting tomorrow [i.e., Thursday]. We have adjusted the lighting levels during the day to improve the brightness in the tunnel over previous levels. We are also working on replacing any lighting that is not working and this should be complete within the next 2-4 weeks. I am still awaiting a firm schedule for the washing. Generally, we try to do this in the spring … [but] If temperatures warm substantially without the risk of freezing, I will see if

we can step up the schedule….” I was also advised the ministry is committed to maintaining the tunnel while the bridge replacement project moves forward. We will obviously just have to keep reminding them… Hopefully this will somewhat brighten your next trip through the tunnel and I thank the regional director for his rapid response to our growing displeasure. Time for Delta to get rid of tree bylaw

Editor: Re: Despite name change, bylaw is still not protecting trees, letter to the editor, Feb. 1 I am sick and tired about reading how the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many. The same few people who don’t represent the views of the public are pushing to get their agendas through regarding

Available at McDonald’s Tsawwassen and Ladner locations

trees. Delta council needs to get a real picture of what the public wants. Ask your neighbour if they would like control back on what happens on their property. Overwhelmingly you’ll hear, “Yes, I want to cut and plant trees as I see fit on my property.” Not only is the bylaw a waste of taxpayer money because of time spent

(Locally owned and operated by Steve Krawchuk)

enforcing it, it’s out of date and out of touch with what the public wants. I would encourage council to survey the whole community when making big decisions, rather than falling to pressure from activists who are out of touch with reality, and kick and scream louder than others to get their way. Shopping Day benefits hospice

Open Space Yoga’s annual Shopping Day for Charity raised $3,400 for the Delta Hospice Society. Twenty per cent of proceeds from a variety of vendors that set up shop at the Delta Street yoga studio for the day, as well as 100 per cent of proceeds from Potters for Hospice, went to the local nonprofit. “We are so pleased to host this shopping day each year to give back to an important charitable

Open Space owner Michael Rudd (front right) holds up a cheque for $3,400, proceeds from Shopping Day for Charity. organization,” said Open Space owner Michael Rudd. “It also benefits the smaller local businesses by showcasing their wares to the local community. It is a bit of a win-win.” Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey said Rudd continues to be a

huge advocate for hospice. “We all feel very fortunate. Open Space has been a key supporter of hospice since before the inception of the Irene Thomas Hospice and Centre for Supportive Care in 2010, and to date has raised over $35,000 for hospice work,” she said.

The Corporation of Delta gives notice that it is seeking approval of the electors to change the classification of Delta from a District Municipality to a City. The intent of this classification and name change is to clarify Delta’s identity and role as a local government. Based on recent municipal reclassifications at the City of Maple Ridge and West Kelowna which cost approximately $3,000, Delta is focused on minimizing costs and the timeframe associated with this initiative; a process estimated to cost Delta a total of $5,000. By statute, to be considered a City, a municipality must have a population of over 5,000. The current population of Delta exceeds 98,000. All municipalities are legal corporations, but Delta is the only municipality in British Columbia that actually calls itself the Corporation. In an effort to clarify Delta’s identity as a key municipality within Metro Vancouver, Delta is seeking to change its classification from a District Municipality to a City and accordingly update its name by Letters Patent to the “City of Delta”. Elector Approval Council may apply to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to change the classification of Delta from a District Municipality to a City unless at least 10% of the electors of the entire municipality of the Corporation of Delta sign elector response forms opposing this initiative and submit them to the Corporation of Delta by the deadline of 4:00 pm on Friday March 31, 2017. If 10% of the electors sign and submit elector response forms by the deadline, Council must obtain assent of the electors before proceeding. The only persons entitled to sign forms are electors of Delta. The Corporation of Delta estimates that 6,993 is the number of electors who must submit signed elector response forms in order to prevent Council from applying for a change of classification from a District Municipality to a City without the assent of the electors. Elector Response Form Locations Elector responses must be in the form established by the Corporation of Delta. These forms are available on Delta’s website to download at www.delta.ca and are available by request from the following locations: LOCATION Delta Municipal Hall Ladner Leisure Centre South Delta Recreation Centre North Delta Recreation Centre Sungod Recreation Centre

He turned Black Friday into a fundraiser of sorts, dedicating 25 per cent of all purchases made at his Tsawwassen store that day to the Delta Hospice Society, raising $830 for the non-profit in the process. “My idea was to use this day to give back to a local charity. We fundraise in many ways through running clinics, half-marathon and marathon running races, but we wanted to come up with a new concept, one that benefits everyone,” said Ridley. Gifts like this help fund the no-fee programs and services run through the Centre for Supportive Care and help to provide many comforts needed at the Irene Thomas Hospice, said Delta Hospice executive director Nancy Macey. The Delta Hospice Society operates the Harold & Veronica Centre for Supportive Care, the Irene Thomas Hospice and the Hospice Cottage Charity Shoppe.

28 Days to Wellness Challenge gets underway in Tsawwassen Business Briefs The Tsawwassen Wellness Centre is hosting a free 28 Days to Wellness Challenge for the people of South Delta during February. Owner Linda Mallard has teamed up with Mary Roncarelli, a health coach and change expert, to create the challenge, which is

designed to inspire people to take action and learn new ways to create more energy, feel stronger and get fit. If this sounds like something you want for yourself, then take part in Motivation Mondays on Feb. 6, 20 and 27 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Tsawwassen Springs clubhouse ballroom. You must register to ensure enough seating, handouts and gifts. Call

the Tsawwassen Wellness Centre at 604-943-8823. *** The Bosley’s in Tsawwassen is hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary. Set for Saturday, Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the fundraiser will feature a bake sale, raffle draws, a dog treat-tasting bar and more. After the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs closed

last June, Greyhaven stepped in to rescue and find forever homes for 584 birds. Many of the birds were in very poor condition and the cost of caring for hundreds of parrots in several locations has been staggering. *** Delta Cable customers now have a new way to personalize their TV channel lineup. TV Channel Exchange

enables consumers to swap out one or more TV channels they don’t want with channels they do want to watch from over 150 selections. “Consumer interests vary widely and they have been very clear about their sensitivity to pay for TV channels they don’t want,” says Tannis Goodfellow, sales and marketing manager at Delta Cable. “Younger families may want to swap out channels

for more educational and family programming while empty nesters may want to swap out children’s channels for lifestyle, history or travel-oriented programming.” Delta Cable customers who subscribe to either the Essentials Plus or Maestro bundle can log into their secure e-care account, review the channels they already have and then swap out one or more channels.

Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast features athletes

The Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast returns to the Tsawwassen Springs ballroom later this month when three guest athletes share their own personal stories of life, competition and faith. The 43rd edition of the annual breakfast will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 9 a.m. Participants will celebrate Canada’s 150 years of confederation and will hear from Ben Josephson, head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Trinity Western University, Adam Froese, a member of Canada’s field hockey team at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, and Natalie Boyd, a Canadian Interuniversity Sport

champion and national level soccer player. For over four decades, the breakfast has provided an opportunity for people to gather as a reminder that many men and women in public office, as well as those in the private sector, still place a high priority on Christian values and guidance from God. Over 200 people gathered to pray for the leaders of our nation, province and municipality last year. Members of the community are invited to attend. Tickets are $30 each or $210 for a table of eight. For more information or tickets, call Dee Hansen at 604-218-5958.

Our potential is amazing but finding our purpose is better. This light bulb has great potential to illuminate places and yet without being used for the purpose it was designed for, it not only offers no light, but it is fragile and susceptible to being broken. This light needs to attach itself to the place it was designed for. This year don’t be a potential light and life source, be purposeful. Plug your gifts and talents

I’ve been a carrier for the Optimist for the last few years. It all started when I wanted a job so that I could have some spending money throughout high school. It then evolved into a way for me to save up for university. I enjoy my route as it is right in my neighbourhood. It gives me a chance to interact with my neighbours and find out what is happening in our community. During the recent cold and snowy weather, I found myself the recipient of a nice warm hot chocolate from a thankful patron. These last few years delivering have been a positive experience and I am grateful for the opportunity. As I embark on the next chapter, I.E university I plan to continue my career with the Optimist.

Why not bring your potential wattage into a setting that will harness your power and then use it for a much bigger purpose. Don’t allow yourself to be distant and fragile in 2017 when God has designed people and places where you can fit and become more stable. Your ability to shine is not in question. outh Delta Secondary will serve as a stand-up comedy venue next Saturday night. The comedy night event is a fundraiser for the SDSS dry grad and experienced Tsawwassen comedian Billy Mitchell will emcee the show. He’s done comedy night fundraisers for past editions of the local dry grad and notes he likes to support good causes in the community because he loves the town. It’s also his son’s grad year, he adds. Mitchell has been kept busy recently after buying a local coffee shop and says he hasn’t done much comedy lately. “I’m itchin’ to tread the boards again because I miss it,” he says. The show’s lineup includes Patrick Maliha, Mark Hughes and Ben Fawcett. Mitchell says Maliha is a very versatile talent who actually set the world record for the number of impressions in one minute. He adds that Hughes, who according to a submitted bio has been in substance abuse recovery since 2006, is bringing something this community needs. “I think in light of recent events, right within our

Sidekick Players Club looking for 12 Angry Men

The Sidekick Players Club needs Twelve Angry Men. The local theatre group is holding auditions for Reginald Rose’s classic play on Monday, Feb. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Directed for Sidekick by Carroll Lefebvre, the play will be staged at the arts centre from March 23 to April 8. The drama depicts a jury forced to reconsider its nearly unanimous decision by the single dissenter who sows a seed of rea-

sonable doubt. The story begins after closing arguments have been presented in a homicide case as the judge gives his instructions to the jury. As in most American criminal cases, the 12 men must unanimously decide on a verdict of guilty or not guilty. (In the justice systems of nearly all American states, failure to reach a unanimous verdict, a so-called hung jury, results in a mistrial.) The case at hand pertains to whether a young

man murdered his own father. The jury is further instructed that a guilty verdict will be accompanied by a mandatory death sentence. These 12 then move to the jury room, where they begin to become acquainted with the personalities of their peers. Throughout their deliberation, not a single juror calls another by his name because the names are unknown by the jurors. Several of the jurors have different reasons for discriminating against the

Carroll Lefebvre witness: his race, his background and the troubled relationship between one

juror and his own son. Auditions will be on a first-come, first-served basis with a cold read from the script. Cast requirements are men from 20 to mid 40s. One must have a European accent. This is a non-equity production and all successful actors must become members of the Sidekick Players Club. Those interested in auditioning are asked to send a resume and head shot (if available) to sidekickplayers@outlook.com.

Film academy students hear from industry veterans DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Delta Film Academy students got to hear from a pair of industry veterans last week. Visual effects supervisors Robert Habros and Thomas Schelesny dropped by to talk to students, sharing their experiences and work history. It can be difficult as a young person to know how to take that next step and where it might lead, Schelesny told the Optimist, adding that eve-

ryone’s journey is different and there’s a million ways to get into the industry. “Their results will be varied, but they can do it … it’s good to have someone come into the room and say it can be done.” Habros, who recently worked on the new Netflix series Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, says they tried to share some inspiring words with the aspiring filmmakers. Schelesny explains that from the beginning of a project, through shooting,

and until the very end, a visual effects supervisor tries to take the director’s vision and deliver it as a finished product. Recent projects for Schelesny include Game of Thrones, Pan and the new Power Rangers movie. Schelesny lives in Tsawwassen while Habros is a Point Roberts resident.

Quartet brings jazz back to arts centre Ben Lockwood adds pianist Nick Peck for upcoming show in Tsawwassen DAVE WILLIS

d w i l l i s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Ben Lockwood is coming back to the Tsawwassen Arts Centre and he’s bringing a special guest. Pianist Nick Peck will be part of the Ben Lockwood Quartet for a jazz concert at the local venue next Friday. “He’s massive on the Vancouver scene at the minute,” says Lockwood, describing his friend as one of the best pianists in the city. “He’s really making a name for himself. He’s one of the busiest guys in town.” Lockwood, a saxophone player, brought his quartet to the arts centre last May. The show went really well, he says, noting there are now plans for a series of concerts there.

“It’s pretty cool,” he says. The aim is to have a special guest at each show. Expect to hear a repertoire including sounds from the 1950s and ’60s of “what we’d now call mainstream, straight ahead stuff” at the show next week. “It’s going to be a fun night,” he says. Lockwood, a Vancouver musician by way of the UK, has performed around the world, including venues like the Barbican, Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London. He’s also been featured at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. The concert is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. Doors are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person.

Saxophonist Ben Lockwood returns to the Tsawwassen Arts Centre with his quartet next Friday night.

Sun Devil star headed to Maine Grant McDonald signs with Black Bears after weighing offers from several schools MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

A rare three-year starter for the South Delta Sun Devils is taking his football career to the NCAA Division One level next fall. Two-way standout Grant McDonald officially committed to the University of Maine Black Bears Wednesday as part of National Signing Day for all NCAA athletic programs. He weighed his options on both sides of the border before accepting Maine’s lucrative full-ride offer. The Black Bears are part of the Colonial Athletic Association and coming off a 6-5 season under head coach Joe Harasymiak. McDonald is one three Canadians among the team’s 2017 recruiting class, joining Ottawa’s Liam Dobson and Montreal native Jayvaun Shears. His decision concluded months of speculation for one of B.C.’s prize high school recruits. McDonald initially toured Guelph University in his Grade 10 year, then made full use of his four official visits by heading to the

University of Calgary in December and more recently North Dakota and Maine, just two weeks ago. He also received a scholarship offer from University of Buffalo and attended camps at Weber State, Harvard and Columbia. Things got interesting when the University of Hawaii entered the mix in the late going. Calgary was always considered the frontrunner among CIS schools, given his older brother Jack just wrapped up his sophomore season with the Dinos. “It was a long process that really did come down to the last day,” said McDonald. “Maine was just the right fit for me. It’s located in a nice east coast town, the players I met were great and so was the coaching staff. I’m just excited and grateful to have the chance to play at the division one level. “That was a tough phone call I had to make (to Jack). But he completely understood the rare opportunity I have and didn’t want me to regret anything down the road.” McDonald’s decorated career with the Sun Devils included having a big role in the team’s run

to its first-ever provincial “AAA” championship in 2014 as a starting linebacker and running back. In the title game, he scored a pair of touchdowns in 55-30 win over Mt. Doug. Jack was named the game’s MVP while his dad Bruce continues on as one of the team’s top assistants under head coach Ray Moon. McDonald would go on to enjoy two more impressive seasons, earning provincial all-star honours at linebacker and racking up big numbers on both sides of the ball. He nearly reached another B.C. final in his Grade 12 year as South Delta dropped a 22-21 heartbreaker to eventual champion Terry Fox in the semi-finals. He did get a chance to play alongside his younger brother Ben who is only in Grade 9. “The only thing I’m disappointed about is we are now down to our last McDonald,” laughed Moon. “It must be something in their blood because they are all special. “Grant is not only an exceptional player but a great leader as well. He was always asking what

he could do to help and actually led a throw around (session) without any of the coaches there. I’m really happy for him.” The Black Bears have McDonald penciled in on their depth chart at tight end — a position he hasn’t played before — but they hope to take advantage of his 6-foot-3 and 220-pound frame, along with his speed. “It’s almost more of a halfback position than it is a tight end,” explained McDonald. “They run a pro style offence and think it will be a good fit for me. “I’m just going to keep working hard over the next few months and it helps having a brother (Ben) who is a quarterback that can throw me passes to get me ready.” McDonald is not the only member of the SDSS 2017 graduating class to commit to a school. Towering offensive lineman David Edwards, another threeyear starter, has signed with the UBC Thunderbirds. According to Moon, at least three others also could be headed to the university level.

Big weekend for Ice Hawks MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

One of the biggest games of the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s regular season will see two teams back on the ice just hours after playing the previous night. The Delta Ice Hawks and Grandview Steelers square off on noon Sunday at the Burnaby Winter Club in a showdown that will go a long way towards determining top spot in the PJHL’s Tom Shaw Conference. The Hawks (27-12-0-1) are just two points back of the Steelers (25-8-2-5) with a game in hand after their 4-1 win over the Richmond Sockeyes on Tuesday in Ladner. Grandview typically plays its home games on Sundays at 4 p.m. but the start time has been moved up to avoid a conflict with the Super Bowl. Ironically, both teams are in action Saturday night. Delta visits Mission, while the Steelers travel to North Vancouver. “That is a tough schedule. At least these boys have played a lot of tournament hockey over the years,” chuckled Ice Hawks coach Darren Naylor. Grandview is riding a six-

game win streak into the weekend, while the Hawks picked up a much-needed victory after its first turbulent stretch of the season. They had managed just one victory in their last four games and were rocked 7-1 by the Sockeyes last Thursday at Minoru Arena. Naylor suggested his team was almost back in training camp mode after adding four players prior to the league roster deadline, including the return of veteran Quinten Wideski from a knee injury. A fifth player — 17-year-old forward Harris Pearce — is expected to make his debut against Mission after playing in the B.C. Hockey League earlier this season and recovering from a leg injury. “We have had a lot of new guys come in and it’s taken a while,” said Naylor. “This was a big game tonight so I scaled that down a bit with the line-up. They just have to get use to each other. There is a lot of talent out there.” Naylor did admit he is concerned over his team’s defensive play of late with far too many turnovers. He gave plenty of ice time to Major Midget AP blue-

liner Matthew Dyck who was filling in for the injured Gary Dhaliwal. The Sockeyes enjoyed the better scoring chances in the second period but were turned back by a solid performance from rookie goaltender Jordan Naylor while his teammates struck for three goals the other way to take control. Sockeyes head coach Judd Lambert is focused on using the remaining regular season games to prepare his team for what should be a heck of an opening round series against Delta or Grandview. “We are just finding something to build on over these last three games,” he said. “We know we are not going anywhere in the standings and it’s not up to us who we will be playing. It’s up to Grandview and Delta. “We know we are going to be getting similar teams. Delta is probably a little bit better up front and Grandview a little bit better defensively. There’s not going to be any surprises which there never are at this point of the season.” The Ice Hawks play their final regular season home game Tuesday when Port Moody visits Ladner at 7:35 p.m. PLUS RECEIVE MONTHLY DEALS WORTH $50 OR MORE FROM LOCAL MERCHANTS

KALMET, Juhan (John)

June 2, 1937 - January 30, 2017 After a brief but determined fight, Juhan (John) succumbed to a rare form of thyroid cancer on January 30, 2017 at the age of 79 years. Born in Rakvere, Estonia, John fled to Sweden during WWII with his mother and uncle, and later immigrated to Canada in 1948, initially living in Vancouver and then Toronto. John graduated from the University of Toronto in Mining Engineering, and immediately started his career with the Noranda Group. Upon marrying his wife Maria, he and his family were transferred several times across Ontario, Saskatchewan and B.C., finally settling in Tsawwassen, B.C. in 1982. After achieving “Quarter Century Club” status with Noranda, John joined Canada Tungsten, and then culminated his career as President and COO of Wheaton River Minerals. After retiring, he remained as a director for several mining companies, but then launched a new 15 year career of travelling the world to far flung places. Predeceased by his father Juhan, his twin sons Juhan and Anthony, his uncle Karl, his mother Karin, and his step-father Eerik, John will be forever cherished by his loving wife of 47 years, Maria; his daughters Kristina (Lee), Astrid, and Natalie (Jeremy); his sister Anne (Tõnu); his brother-in-law Fernando (Jen); his most favourite people Keegan, Kaelin, Greta, and Magnus, in addition to his special nieces and nephews. The family thanks the wonderful staff at Delta Hospital who gave John tremendous care towards the end of his fight. A celebration of John’s life will be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s memory to the Delta Hospital Foundation. Though we may no longer hear the words in person, we will never forget your vast knowledge, sage advice, and many adventures off the beaten path. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
