New idea brewing on the farm Farmers join forces to create a micro-brewery where the ingredients are grown on-site SANDOR GYARMATI

Three multi-generational Delta farm families are joining forces to create a micro-brewery. Brent and Shelley Harris, Ken Malenstyn and Sean Buhr want to build a craft brewery at the Harris’s Fraserland Farms property on 60th Avenue in Ladner. David Terpsma, who comes from a local farm family as well, is joining the venture to be the brewmaster. Already having tested several potential beers they could brew, the idea is to use the organic barley, as well as cranberries, already grown at the Harris operation, while hops would come from Malenstyn and Buhr to create beers that are made almost entirely from locally grown products, including potatoes, rye, oats and even honey. “It will be a true on-farm brewery where we are growing, for the most part, all the ingredients. Fifty per cent is the benchmark but we will be trying to get as close to 100 per cent as we can,” said Malenstyn. In 2015, the province announced a series of Agricultural Land Reserve reforms, including allowing breweries, distilleries and meaderies on farmland, provided they meet the same rules set out for wineries. As with wineries in the ALR, at least half the farm ingredients that go into the beer must be grown on site or supplied by a co-operative of farmers. The majority of what’s going into the beer will come from the

The Agricultural Land Commission confirmed the proposal meets the requirements for locating a brewery in the ALR, so ALC approval isn’t required.
However, rezoning is required from Delta and regional district approval is also needed for a sewer line extension. Malenstyn said it’s becoming harder to grow traditional crops
in Delta and that crops need rotation, which the brewery would provide. The monthly beer production in the first year is projected to be 12,300 litres (2,075) gallons and

Delta experienced only modest growth over the past five years compared to other areas. Statistics Canada this week released its latest census on population growth, which found the enumerated population of Delta in 2016 was 102,238. That’s up 2.4 per cent from the 2011 census, which is lower than the provincial average of 5.6 per cent and the national average of five per cent. The population of Ladner in 2016 was 22,193, while Tsawwassen was 21,588, both just slight Valentine Day is February 14

Students preparing for historic trip Contingent from Delta Secondary to attend 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge this April IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
A group of students and staff from Delta Secondary will be a part of history in April with a trip to Vimy Ridge to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Canada’s military victory. The trip is through Education First tours with the focus being attending the anniversary ceremony alongside thousands of other students from across Canada. In addition, students will also be visiting two Canadian cemeteries and the Auschwitz extermination camp. In total, 42 students and six staff members will make the trip April 6 to 20. This will mark a return to Europe for social studies teacher John Powell who was part of the last school trip in 2010. “It was a rewarding experience to look at history and it opened up a lot of eyes on the sacrifices that so many people made,” said Powell. “I was not planning on doing this

For most it will be their first time travelling to Europe, so that in itself
is exciting, but learning about the culture and history at such a significant event will be something else. “When it came to this trip I was a bit cautious at first, but after thinking about it I realized the weeks that I would miss in school would be nothing compared to actually experiencing this on the

100th anniversary where I would see not only figures who will be famous throughout history, but monuments that will never or should never disappear,” said student Harmony Powell. For student Liam Ducasse, it’s a chance to trace his family roots. “My great, great grandfather went over the top
on Vimy Ridge and was part of the final push when they finally took the hill, so it’s finding out more about what he fought for,” said Ducasse. “It’s significant because I get to see what he and what Canada was fighting for.” Megan Moorehead said she thinks it will be such a different way to experience Europe with a dedicated
tour guide and your peers. “I think we will get so much more out of it when they explain the different details about the history. I never thought that I would be able to go to Europe any time soon, so to be able to see Europe in this way and see how Canadians have impacted that part of the world in such a profound way is going to be really amazing,” she said. The students and a dedicated group of parents have been actively fundraising for the trip with pizza and samosa sales, a clothing drive, and a recent meat draw and pub night fundraiser at The Landing Pub. “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the community,” said parent Danielle Caldwell. South Delta Secondary students and staff will also be making the trip. Powell said in early March the plan is to invite the students and parents from South Delta to Delta Secondary for a meet and greet.

here are Tim Hortons absolutely everywhere. The iconic fast food chain has somewhere in the neighbourhood of 4,500 locations, mostly in Canada, but in eight other countries as well. Seemingly on every street corner, you can also find them in train stations and airports, in hospitals and universities, in casinos and racetracks, in arenas and zoos. The chain even has outlets on military bases overseas. Where it doesn’t have a location — and forgive me for stating the obvious — is in Ladner, despite a local businessman’s efforts to set up shop here. I suspect most readers know by now that earlier this week Delta council narrowly defeated an application to build a Tim Hortons on a vacant lot on Ladner Trunk Road just east of 64th Street. Concerns over a 24-hour drive-thru operating in proximity to a handful of homes was ultimately the proposal’s undoing as council split along gender lines in a 4-3 vote. I recognize there are potential impacts, but Ian Paton, the only council member from Ladner, was bang on when he said people are excited about the prospect of a Tim Hortons coming to town. Yes, I know it’s a little strange to actually get enthused about a doughnut shop, but when you don’t have easy access to a double-double like pretty much everyone else does, you long for such convenience. Perhaps those council members who voted against the application, all of whom live in parts of Delta better served by Tim Hortons, take that access for granted. The most common question I get asked when I’m out in the community has to do with the start of construction on the bridge, but the next most frequent one involves the state of the Tim Hortons application. When you tell people from outside Delta that your town doesn’t have a Tim Hortons, their incredulous response usually includes a query about whether you also lack indoor plumbing. That’s because to many it would seem inconceivable that a middle-class Canadian community of more than 22,000 people could, in 2017, be without one. If a 24-hour drive-thru is indeed a deal breaker, perhaps the hours could be reduced or some other modifications made. Something needs to happen because, my dear Delta council members, Ladner needs a Tim Hortons.
District progamming helps kids find their way in world
W
e all want the best for our children. When they are young, we help them navigate the great big world and teach them the necessities of living as a human. We instinctively introduce them to new things, to nature, and we try our best to integrate them into social environments. We teach them about love and the security of family and friends. As they get older and move into our school system, we generally help them understand what they are being taught and provide support for them if they need. Parents attempt to answer as many questions posed by our kids to the best of our ability. We nurture their interests and provide encouragement when their young, inquisitive minds key in on something that has piqued their attention. When the young learners attach themselves to something and are happy to be pursuing their interests, parents feel pride and, to a certain degree, relief in knowing there is something your child is passionate about. They could be keen soccer players, bakers, gardeners, readers, writers or photographers. They could love to help out in the kitchen, explore tidal pools or collect rocks. I can recall that my parents sent me subliminal messages

suggesting that I should pursue scientific study in high school and university. When I look back at my Grade 11 and 12 course load I am amazed that I made it to graduation at all. Biology, chemistry, algebra, physics and geography was my daily life. Some kids excel in that type of environment. I was not one of those. I wasn’t having a lot of fun in those years. I did have one class in English literature that I enjoyed and after two years of post-secondary sciences, I packed it in to pursue a full course load of literature classes. I wanted to be a teacher. I was also working full-time in the hotel/restaurant business and was making a pretty good salary in various management positions. As the paycheques got bigger, I realized I was having a lot of fun doing what I was doing and I convinced myself that I was teaching employees. This made it all right
in my world. I guess what I am getting at is that kids will find their way eventually, but in my view it is hugely important that they have opportunity to try new things in nontraditional ways. The Delta School District does an exceptional job of offering these opportunities and is widely recognized as an innovator. The academy programs offered here afford broad choice for our kids, which is a good thing. Believe it or not, course planning time is coming up, which can be stressful for parents and students. A new offering in course selection here in Delta is, of course, the Farm Roots MiniSchool program (I disclose that I am working with the district on this), which offers post-secondary credit through teaching kids about farming, sustainable food systems and jobs in the $14-billion food economy in B.C. The kids are having a blast and are learning about business, math and science and they get to be outside... a lot! As long as I have lived here, I have felt the residents of Tsawwassen and Ladner will always be outvoted by North Delta, and therefore there is little evidence that council needs to listen to South Delta’s concerns. I sincerely hope that 10 per cent of residents file their objections to becoming a city, and instead mount a question on the next municipal election ballot in South Delta to separate. One other reality is that we read the “Delta” Optimist and they read the “Surrey” Now, which is another reason to confirm the two areas have almost nothing in common. Greg Hoover
Good Samaritan warrants recognition
Editor: I was out for my run on Monday morning, trudging through the ice and snow, when I came upon this gentleman. His name is Wayne Grendus. What an amazing man and citizen he is. He was out shovelling the overpass steps that cross Highway 17A from the Ladner Leisure Centre to Association Park in East Ladner. When I told him how impressed and overwhelmed I was that he was doing such a nice thing, his response was, “I just want to help. I care about people.” I asked him
if I could take his photo to send it to the Optimist. He said, “Yes, but I don’t want a reward.” I am always so overwhelmed with the amazing citizens that live here in Ladner. Editor: Re: Public to have say over Delta becoming a city, Feb. 1 I was quite surprised to see the article about Delta possibly becoming a city. Why no previous discussion? Why no indication of the advantages or disadvantages? Why is this decided by only the people who notice it in your paper and respond? Something doesn’t sit well here. In my opinion, I don’t think Delta should become a city. As a matter of fact, I think South Delta and North Delta should separate. Why? Because we have almost nothing in common and North Delta elects the council and mayor who govern South Delta. A list of South Delta issues that have almost no connection to North Delta:

Corporation label is an easy mistake Editor: Re: Public to have say over Delta becoming a city, Feb. 1 I believe the Corporation of Delta should retain its classification as a corporation as it seems more interested in behaving like one, making profits from, rather than representing, the citizens of Delta. Quite a large number
of homeowners with unrented secondary suites, some recently heard from through letters to the Optimist, are about to be taken advantage of by being required to pay fees where none have been incurred. Ordinary companies would love to make “profits” that way, but fortunately they don’t have the latitude the Corporation of
Delta has. If Delta wants to support the promotion of its identity as a vibrant city, rather than as a corporation (to loosely quote a report to council), it should begin by acting less like a private business, then perhaps it wouldn’t be so likely to be “mistaken” for one, even by some of its own citizens. Huntington is deserving of wonderful tribute

THE CORPORATION OF DELTA
Notice of Elector Approval Process in Relation to Reclassification of the Corporation of Delta from a District Municipality to a City The Corporation of Delta gives notice that it is seeking approval of the electors to change the classification of Delta from a District Municipality to a City. The intent of this classification and name change is to clarify Delta’s identity and role as a local government. Based on recent municipal reclassifications at the City of Maple Ridge and West Kelowna which cost approximately $3,000, Delta is focused on minimizing costs and the timeframe associated with this initiative; a process estimated to cost Delta a total of $5,000. By statute, to be considered a City, a municipality must have a population of over 5,000. The current population of Delta exceeds 98,000. All municipalities are legal corporations, but Delta is the only municipality in British Columbia that actually calls itself the Corporation. In an effort to clarify Delta’s identity as a key municipality within Metro Vancouver, Delta is seeking to change its classification from a District Municipality to a City and accordingly update its name by Letters Patent to the “City of Delta”. Elector Approval Council may apply to the Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development to change the classification of Delta from a District Municipality to a City unless at least 10% of the electors of the entire municipality of the Corporation of Delta sign elector response forms opposing this initiative and submit them to the Corporation of Delta by the deadline of 4:00 pm on Friday March 31, 2017. If 10% of the electors sign and submit elector response forms by the deadline, Council must obtain assent of the electors before proceeding. The only persons entitled to sign forms are electors of Delta. The Corporation of Delta estimates that 6,993 is the number of electors who must submit signed elector response forms in order to prevent Council from applying for a change of classification from a District Municipality to a City without the assent of the electors. Elector Response Form Locations Elector responses must be in the form established by the Corporation of Delta. These forms are available on Delta’s website to download at www.delta.ca and are available by request from the following locations: LOCATION Delta Municipal Hall Ladner Leisure Centre South Delta Recreation Centre North Delta Recreation Centre Sungod Recreation Centre

million fundraising goal. This year, Reach is hoping to raise $120,000 with the help of individuals and businesses in the community. Toyota CAPTIN and Port of Vancouver have stepped up to be presenting sponsors of the Grand Gala: Passion for Potential. Event volunteers behind the scenes play a massive role in making the gala happen. Volunteers plan the event for months as well as manage an abundance of details on event night. Why do they do it? The response is unanimous: they have a passion to support what Reach Society does for the community. Held at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, Reach for the Stars Gala 2017 will offer heartwarming stories from families who have received help from Reach programming as well as musical entertainment, a three-course seated dinner and live and silent auctions. Kelly Latremouille, morning host on LG104.3 and a Tsawwassen resident, will MC this year. Tickets are $125 each and available by calling 604-946-6622 ext. 0 or online at www.reachforthestarsevent.org. If you are interested in helping Reach by donating a live or silent auction item, or volunteering the night of the event, contact Kristin at kristinb@reachchild.org or at 604-9466622 ext. 367.

Port’s community committee covered much ground in ’16 The Port Community Liaison Committee was engaged on a wide range of port-related issues in 2016. As a multi-stakeholder body, the committee includes representatives from the community, environment, agriculture, industry and local governments. The goal is to exchange information and build awareness, understanding and relationships among the representative groups. How does it do this? At regular meetings updates are shared about port operations and projects, and delegations are hosted on key topics. The committee also discusses questions or concerns raised by its members as well as from the community (including those received directly by email at pclc@portvancouver. com). The committee has a website with meeting notes and resources. In the past year, it has also begun to organize workshops and participate in public information sessions at the port’s community office in Ladner. Here’s a brief summary of the key issues covered in 2016: • Roberts Bank Terminal 2: The proposed terminal expansion is undergoing a federal environmental assessment, carried out by a three-person review panel. Heading into the third year
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Port Community Liaison Committee members Leslie Abramson (centre) and Patrick Thompson (far right) present a cheque for $1,000 to coordinator Joe Van Essen of the South Delta Food Bank (far left). of the process, the panel has been busy reviewing the masses of scientific and technical information received from the public, stakeholders and other groups. Public hearings are expected to be held in early to mid-2017. • Truck licensing system: Trucking can have impacts on both traffic and air quality in the region. In addition to helping to align the supply and demand for trucks, the mandatory licensing program for container trucks that access the port aims to reduce pollution through emissions standards. • Truck staging facility: Over the years, many concerns have been expressed about trucks idling along Deltaport Way, waiting to access Roberts Bank. To reduce the idling and traffic issues that can occur, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and B.C.
Ministry of Transportation are building a truck staging area along Deltaport Way (at Highway 17A). • Noise monitoring program: Noise continues to be the most common port-related complaint. To better identify and manage noise concerns, three local monitoring stations have been installed in the vicinity of the Roberts Bank terminals, along with a real-time tracking tool the public can view online. • Whistle cessation for trains: Residents have inquired about the whistling that trains make when travelling through local at-grade crossings. Transport Canada has detailed procedures for approving whistle cessation at such crossings. Interested municipalities must consult with railway companies about the feasibility and safety associated with any whistle cessation programs.
DRIVER/CARRIER AGENT WANTED The Delta Optimist is looking for a person to deliver bundles to carriers twice a week, every Wednesday and Friday. Must have reliable van (cargo preferred) or covered truck, a valid drivers license, and be willing to work late night/early mornings.
• Pollution tracking: The long-term health of the southern resident killer whales is of interest to many. To establish a baseline of contaminant levels in shellfish and sediment on the B.C. coast, the Vancouver Aquarium now has a Pollution Tracker partnership with the port authority and other stakeholders. • Industrial land market: Questions about growth forecasts for containerized trade, and the logistics business, were regularly raised. The firm Site Economics presented a report to the committee on the consequences of industrial land shortage in the Lower Mainland, and the underlying assumptions about trade growth, competition and supply chain. • GCT Deltaport Third Berth: The committee received updates from the port authority and GCT Canada about terminal related projects at DP3. This included the port authority’s ongoing habitat rehabilitation along the east causeway, and the provision of on terminal shore power for future use by container ships. The committee looks forward to hearing from community members throughout 2017, and to sharing more information about port impacts, operations and mitigation efforts. Chantelle
Large, Great Dane X Belgian Malinois, Spayed Female Adult (Approximately 5 years old) Meet Chantelle! This big girl has a lot of love to give. Chantelle ended up here at no fault of her own; her owner was going in for surgery and was unable to care for her during recovery. Chantelle is a high energy dog, but we have been told that she can get stiff after lots of exercise. Brain games such as training and nose work would be very beneficial for her. Chantelle can be a total goofball and loves to swim. She would make an excellent camping partner. This loving lady wouldn’t do well living with another animal so needs a home where she can be the only one! She still needs to work on loose leash walking and exchanging toys for treats. However, she is eager to please and a pleasure to work with.

Preserving the past in Boundary Bay
Major restoration project underway at 99-year-old Embree House next to Delta Heritage Air Park IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Delta’s past is meeting the present with the restoration of the historic Embree House in Boundary Bay Regional Park. The house, which will be 100 years old in 2018, is significant for its association with the pioneering Embree Family. George Burton Embree built the home in 1918 for his farm workers after the Nova Scotia-born Embree settled on the land in 1898. The family retained ownership of the home for many years. George’s son Burton and his wife Mary moved in after they were married in 1938 and remained there for 10 years. A giant willow tree stands in front of the property with a commemorative plaque stating the tree was planted on Sept. 22, 1938, the day Burton and Mary married. The house at the foot of 104th Street is also valued for its connection to the Delta Heritage Air Park, which was established by George’s brother Darmel Diston, who was a pilot. After purchasing his first aircraft, Diston realized there was a big demand for landing space and an aerodrome where pilots could store their aircraft,

Interpreting the original locations for doors and windows has also been challenging because in order to ensure that it was structurally sound we had to replace many of the walls. But in saying all that, we are certainly trying to follow the original plans as much as possible.” Repin said it has been a good process so far. “With these types of projects there is a lot of give and take, because when you start opening walls, you never know what you might expect,” he said. “Everything is going to be updated to today’s building codes and standards, while also keeping and celebrating the historical nature and retaining as much of the character as we can. “Next year the home will be 100 years old, but with an upgraded kitchen, heating system and other amenities, it will be a modern home with an historic history. It’s really very cool. I’d love to live here myself. It’s going to be a fantastic space once it’s finished.”

Activities, open houses, awards and more
There is lots to do during the Corporation of Delta’s Heritage Celebration. Running from Feb. 13 to 26, the heritage celebrations will take place for the first time over a two-week period instead of just one week. Activities include the Delta Heritage Hunt where participants can win great prizes. To join, visit Delta’s social media pages. For more information, visit delta.ca/heritage. Also taking place will be demonstrations including net mending, weaving, spinning/knitting and cedar weaving. Delta’s website has dates and locations. Details about a children’s colouring contest are also available on Delta’s website. On Saturday, Feb. 18, there will be an open house at Trinity Lutheran Church, 11040 River Rd.,
from noon to 4 p.m. It will be an opportunity to tour one of Delta’s oldest churches. The Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park will play host to a tea and heritage displays from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. A highlight of heritage celebrations will be the presentations of heritage awards by Mayor Lois Jackson at the Feb. 20 regular meeting of Delta council. The Heritage Advisory Commission selects recipients for Delta’s Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage Award annually. The commission accepts nominations for the awards throughout the year to be presented the following year. A Heritage Award of Merit is conferred to projects, individuals or groups for conserving a valuable
part of Delta’s history. Awards may be granted to urban or rural projects in the area of preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive re-use and may be considered for their exterior or interior characteristics. A Friends of Heritage Award is conferred to a project, individual or group that promotes heritage conservation and awareness in the areas of education, publication or advocacy. Meanwhile, from Feb. 13 to May 26, applications will be accepted for the $1,000 Delta Heritage Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating high school student residing in Delta. It is provided in an effort to encourage students to display an interest in local or regional heritage, as demonstrated through an original piece of work.
We would like to send out a BIG THANKS to ALL the people who made the Deltassist Christmas Programs such a success this year! To those who donated toys, food, money and volunteered time, making sure that Christmas was brighter for families in need in Delta, thank you so much. Without our community’s support we would not be able to help so many every Christmas and throughout the year.

Heryet’s Sentinels wins Delta’s banner contest
Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta council recently recognized the winners of Delta’s 2016 Heritage Banner Design Contest. Special congratulations were extended to Victoria Heryet, winner of the South Delta category and overall grand prize winner, Cathey Tyler, winner of the North Delta category, and Sena Kholmatov, winner of the child/youth category. Heryet’s banner, titled Sentinels, shows off the noble bald eagles that hunt and feed along the Fraser delta. Her banner design has a diverse palate and provides an empowering perspective of these striking birds. As the grand prize winner, Sentinels will be displayed throughout the community through May. Tyler’s Three Grande Ladies is an incredibly detailed representation of Delta’s architectural heritage. The three pristinely drawn houses are Burrvilla, which was built on River Road in 1906,
Victoria Heryet’s Sentinels was the grand prize winner. Kirkland House, which was built in 1911, and Cammidge House, which was completed in 1914. Kholmatov’s The Beauty of our Heritage includes three vital aspects of
Delta’s heritage: farming, fishing/dependence on the water and the First Nations community. Each winner received a $350 honorarium and a street banner with their design. Initiated in the spring of 2014 by the Heritage Advisory Commission, the Heritage Banner Design Contest is a street banner design competition created to raise awareness of Delta’s heritage, showcase local artists and engage the community. A panel of volunteer judges from Watershed Artworks, South Delta Artists Guild and the Heritage Advisory Commission reviewed all entries and selected a winner from each of three categories (South Delta, North Delta and child/ youth) and one overall grand prize winner. Winning entries were considered based on creativity, heritage value, visual appeal, and elements of art and design.

“So, humble yourselves under God’s strong hand, and in his good time he will lift you up. You can throw the whole weight of your anxieties upon him, for you are his personal concern.” (1 Peter 5: 6 & 7, J.B. Phillips New Testament in Modern English) If we would just allow ourselves to get out of the way, position ourselves in the right relationship to the one who is life giver, the one who walks with in the midst of our tumultuous human journey, “Christ Jesus, will himself make you whole and secure and strong.” (1 Peter 5: 10, JB Phillips…) I prefer to trust this foundation.

In the world we live in and the times we are presently contenting with, it seems to me that we are being asked often to “just trust me.” Trust in those we know to be transitory leaders with ideological agendas, trust systems that we have repeatedly experienced to be fatally flawed, trust that the real solution to all of life’s woes is a stable economy. I’m sure you could name many other ultimate fixes driven by the conceptions of our finite human minds. Does this all sound a bit dismal? Well, it can be if we allow ourselves to be drawn into the rapidly changing battle hype and rhetoric of opposing perspectives. The place I turn

he annual Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo has a new venue this year. The local edition of the event, presented by the Ladner Community Garden, will be held at the Ladner United Church on Saturday, Feb. 18. “It’s going to be great there,” says Ladner Community Garden Society director and past president Kristin Crouch. She notes the church is beautiful inside, has a large hall for vendors and has a sanctuary with lots of room for people to listen to guest speakers. She adds there’s even a community garden behind the church. Attendees are encouraged to bring their seeds to trade. Crouch explains the main reason behind the event is to promote seed diversity, something that’s very important to her. The seed swap can be a good way to get rid of seeds you don’t like and exchange them for something you want to try out, she says. That portion of the

A Ladner mom and daughter have teamed up to write a children’s book. “It’s a whimsical way to get kids dreaming,” says Dr. Rummy Dosanjh, who wrote the book along with her eight-year-old daughter Niyah. Their effort is titled Dreamland and they have a book signing event planned for Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Black Bond Books at Trenant Park Square in Ladner. The project began when Dosanjh, a family physician, was training and working long hours. It marked a way they could connect when she wasn’t able to be at home for Niyah’s bedtime.
A family escape room is being offered at Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre on Sunday, Feb. 12. Families will have to work together to complete a number of challenges. They will be timed and the family with the fastest time will be the winner. Preregistration is required by calling 604-952-3005. Families will be allotted 30-minute time slots between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Drop-in rates apply.

Foods to boost your immune system Registered nutritional counsellor suggests introducing these eight foods into your diet
Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
Being sick sucks. No one likes to be sick and no one likes to be around people who are sick. There are a number of ways we can avoid getting sick. Two of the most obvious are getting a flu shot and washing your hands often. However, there also foods we can eat that will help boost our immune system, which in turn will help our bodies fight sickness and bacteria. Sharisse Dalby, a local registered nutritional
counsellor, suggests adding these eight foods into our diet to help boost our immune system, and our overall health, this cold and flu season: • Raw honey has a number of medicinal properties, including the probiotic lactobacillus kunkeei. This probiotic stimulates the cells IgA (immune) response giving it an antimicrobial and antibacterial edge. However, not just any honey will do. It’s got to be raw, which allows the bacteria, L. kunkeei, to survive. Try adding raw honey into warm lemon water, or drizzle a little on your morning oatmeal or toast, or consume a small spoonful as a cough syrup alternative. • Bell peppers are not given enough credit for their ability to boost the immune system. In particular, red bell peppers contain almost three times
the amount of vitamin C than an orange. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a powerful antioxidant, protecting our cells from free radical damage and helps to support healthy immune function. Try adding diced raw peppers to your morning eggs, eating them as a snack with hummus, or adding them to your stirfry or salad. • Yogurt is a fantastic immune booster that can be consumed regularly to help keep your immune system in tip top shape. When buying yogurt, it’s best to go organic, plain and non-fat. As well, Dalby recommends you check the ingredients to confirm the yogurt contains “active bacterial culture.” A great local brand that she recommends is Olympic Organic. • Ginger is spicy and aromatic — and a wonderful addition to your medic-

inal food cabinet. Not only is it full of antioxidants, but it’s also antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, making it perfect to fight off most sicknesses. Grate a little ginger into your warm honey lemon water, or use it as a seasoning for your meats or roasted vegetables. • Berries are not only delicious, but they’re loaded with antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin B complex, zinc, iron and copper. Add berries to your morning cereal, yogurt or smoothies, and they also make a great snack or addition to a lunch or dinner salad. • Pumpkin seeds contain a wide variety of nutrients that are helpful for immune health – most notably zinc. These help to kill off bad bacteria, viruses, funguses and parasites. Snow delays Ice Hawks run for first place MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A harsh stretch of winter weather has wreaked havoc with the final week of the regular season in the Pacific Junior Hockey League. The Delta Ice Hawks (29-120-1) took a big step towards finishing first in the Tom Shaw Conference with a 4-3 win over the Grandview Steelers (25-9-2-5) on Sunday afternoon. The result came a day after a trio of PJHL games were wiped out due to poor road conditions, including the Hawks’ visit to Mission. The game had been rescheduled for Wednesday but another winter storm postponed it again. The teams hope to play Sunday night — 48 hours prior to the playoffs getting underway. Delta also visits North Vancouver on Saturday, while the Steelers could potentially play three games in as many days,

Ice Hawks Brad Crompton towers over his opponents in Tuesday’s 7-1 win over Port Moody. including a make-up contest on Monday night. That game won’t matter if the Ice Hawks can take care of business. They have a two-point lead atop of the division thanks to a 7-1 win over Port Moody on Tuesday and also own the tiebreaker. “We just have to win our games and it doesn’t matter what they
do,” said Delta coach Darren Naylor. “Everything is in our hands now and we earned that opportunity.” Goals from Jordan Bogress, Daniel Rubin and Quinten Wideski gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead before the Steelers came to life with a pair. The teams then exchanged goals, before play-
ing a scoreless third that saw Grandview limited to just six shots. “We had a good talk between periods of doing what it takes to win and everybody bought in,” added Naylor. “The wingers came down low, we took hits and we stayed disciplined. It was a real solid third for us.”
Islanders smelling Roses in net
Delta trades for goalie and names former player new coach of intermediate team MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The Delta Islanders took a step towards clearing up their goaltender situation for the coming 2017 B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League season by pulling the trigger on a trade with the Langley Thunder. The club acquired Roman Rose for a first round pick in the 2019 BCJALL Midget Draft. It marked the second time in less than a year Delta had dealt for Rose after the league voided a trade made with Port Coquitlam last summer — ruling his playing rights actually belonged to Langley. Rose spent a number of weeks practising with the Islanders before his status was finally cleared up. He is a former Team B.C. goalie who was named Tournament MVP of the 2012 Bantam A1 provincial championships after backstopping Langley to the gold medal. Ironically, that team was
coached by Tom Johnson who last week was named head coach of the Intermediate “A” Islanders. Rose is the Islanders’ only junior age goalie after losing Ryland Hood and Matt Keith to graduation. He has all three seasons of eligibility remaining. The other roster spot is expected to go to an underage netminder. Second-year Intermediates Brody Harris and Justin Smith are in the running, along with Jarvis Dashkewytch who back-stopped Delta to the Midget A1 provincial title last year. Islanders general manager Greg Rennie says the club will be busy re-stocking midget draft picks as the season unfolds but a first-rounder for Rose was just too good of deal to pass up on. “We will definitely be recouping that pick, but a lot of teams were after him and were surprised that’s all we had to give up to get him,” he said. “Nothing is guaranteed but we expect him to be one
of our guys. It’s up to (head coach) Kyle (Goundrey) how the workload will be distributed.” The Islanders have lost plenty of firepower to graduation after last year’s championship run but are hoping to have an impact player back in the fold. The club is expecting 2015 rookie-of-the-year Tre LeClaire to continue his box career in Delta at the conclusion of his freshman season at Ohio State University. LeClaire left the Islanders in early July to play for Canada at the U19 World Field Lacrosse Championships. The 18-year-old opted not to return to Delta, but rather focus on his departure to Columbus for his school year at Ohio State. “We had a good talk with his family and Tre wants to still be an Islander. “Every indication is he will be playing for us this coming season,” said Rennie. Meanwhile, the hiring of Johnson to run the Intermediate
“A” program brings back one of the top players to graduate from the organization. The 31-year-old North Delta native was the franchise’s firstever league all-star and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 WLA Draft. Johnson went on to play in the National Lacrosse League as well. He takes on an Intermediate team that is loaded with young talent and should contend for a provincial title over the next couple of years. “It depends on how many end up playing in junior ‘A’ but they have a good chance to be a top three team this coming season,” said Islanders assistant GM Ross Frehlick. “Tom has some good (coaching) success in the Langley organization and this is an opportunity for him to take the next step up.” Jacob Doucet, another player with NLL experience, will serve as Johnson’s defensive assistant.

Delta Skating Club’s synchronized team Solar Ice includes (left to right): Lauren Emsley, Isabella Granger, Kerrianne Kozack, Yasmin Zadunaisky, Sara Morrow, Emma Norris, Taylor Granger, Saffron Burberry, Lauren Frasca, Tiffany Leung, Julia Hirata and Jasmine Mao.
Delta Skating Club’s synchronized skating program is off to a great start this year. Solar Ice, the club’s juvenile team, claimed top spot in their division with a gold medal at the Mountain Regional Synchronized Skating Competition recently held in Burnaby. “We are so proud of all our skaters and what they have accomplished. It has been an amazing experience for them to compete with teams from across B.C. and Alberta,” said board president, Dina Boykiw. Solar Flare and Solar Ice will be competing next at the West Coast Challenge Cup on Saturday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. “This is our second year hosting the event and we are thrilled to have such incredible skating right here in our community,” added Boykiw. Nineteen teams from across the Lower Mainland will be competing at this event. The competition is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. Admission is $5.
Major Midget Canadians battling for higher playoff seed
Greater Vancouver Canadians will be looking to take advantage of a struggling team for the second straight weekend to solidify their playoff position in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League. The Canadians (18-11-3-2) moved into fourth place in the 11-team circuit by sweeping a pair of games from the last place South Island Royals. They will entertain the 10th place Thompson
Blazers Saturday (5 p.m.) and Sunday (10 a.m.) at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Greater Vancouver will then close out the regular season with a trip to Prince George (Feb. 18-19) to take on the first place Cariboo Cougars (27-4-1), before another key doubleheader with the fifth place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (Feb. 25-26).
Henry Rybinski had a hat trick and one assist to lead the Canadians to a 7-1 romp of the Royals last Sunday on the Island. Scott Atkinson scored twice, while Michael Tersigni and River Fahey had the others. The series opener saw Greater Vancouver pull away in the third period for a 5-2 win. Samuel Pouliot had a big outing with a goal and four assists.
Michael Araki-Young, Daniel Pearson and Sasha Mutala had the other goals. Atkinson, the Canadians captain and Edmonton Oil Kings prospect, currently leads the league in scoring with 58 points in 32 games, including 35 goals. Earlier this month he became the team’s all-time leading scorer. Mutala, 15, is third in league scoring with 53 points.

PAWELEK, Alfred Hans (Fred) November 4, 1937 - January 17, 2017 It is with great sorrow that our father, husband and grandfather passed away suddenly leaving his wife Mary, two daughters Sara (Matt) and Rebecca (Gary) and his three grandchildren Anika, Clara and Jayden. He will be greatly missed by us all.
Always a man with a great sense of responsibility, Percy planted roots in his beloved Ladner and built a loving home for his growing family, raising 3 wonderful children; Lynn, Janice, and Billy. Percy took great interest in any task that he undertook, and became very proficient at many do it yourself projects. On the weekends, he would tend to his much loved garden and invite friends over for get-togethers. Family was his life, and friends were for keeps. The door was always open and the welcome mat out at the Holloway home.
OBITUARIES MANSELL, Neil June 3, 1958 - January 31, 2017 Born in England on June 3, 1958, passed away suddenly on January 31, 2017. He is survived by his loving daughter Lauren, mother Vera, brother Ian(Leanne), family and friends and predeceased by his father Barry. After graduating from Tsawwassen Senior Secondary, he went on to college in the States to pursue his love of baseball. He loved to help people less fortunate, which lead him to become a pastor for almost 12 years. Words cannot express our sadness and sorrow, he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, take someone special to Starbuck’s or play a round of Golf, for that is what he loved to do. Service to be held at Don Christian Recreation Centre 6220-184 Street Cloverdale, B.C. on Saturday, February 11th at 2PM.
EDMONDS, Joanne (nee Charlton) Joanne Edmonds (née Charlton) of Richmond BC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 with her loving husband Mark by her side. Her parents Joe and Shirley, with older brother Pete grew up in Tsawwassen. Joanne loved to travel and to live life to its’ fullest. She will be dearly missed by her sister in law Susanne, nephew Devon, niece Danielle as well as many dear friends. Many thanks to the dedicated staff at VGH Palliative Care Unit. A Celebration of Life in memory of Joanne will be held at Beach Grove Golf and Country Club on Sunday, February 19, 2017 from 1:30 to 3:30. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Canadian Cancer Foundation. Cherish each day!
Percy Lewis Holloway, a faithful husband, a beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 30th 2017, at Delta View Life Enrichment Centre in East Delta, at the age of 90. Percy was born in Grahamdale, Manitoba, and moved to Kitsilano, British Columbia, in the early 1940’s with his parents, Walter and Ada, sisters Patricia and Kathleen, and his brothers Kenneth and Norman. Following his keen interest to become a barber, Percy established a popular and well known barbershop on Haviland St. in the heart of Ladner. His barbershop became a local landmark where friends gathered to catch up on the local news and gossip. In the 40’s, Delta residents would go to the local post office to pick up their mail. On one fine day, Percy was in the lineup for his mail when he glanced over and set eyes on the love of his life, Miss Barbara Cole. Their sweetheart courtship continued for 4 years before being married at the Ladner Anglican Church on Arthur Drive.

Percy was an active and well known member in his community, volunteering at the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, he was also a long time member of the Ladner Legion, Kinsmen Club of Ladner, and later on with the K-40 Club. Percy was a great entertainer and was famous for his New Year’s Eve bashes. Many friends and neighbours always looked forward to the annual party as Percy was always the perfect host, and ensured a good time was had by all. He was a kind hearted and loyal individual, who always took the time to go out of his way to show how much he cared about others. It did not matter if you were a casual acquaintance or longtime friend, he treated everyone with compassion and thoughtfulness. Percy was always an extremely friendly man with an outgoing personality. You could consistently count on him for a genuine smile and a warm embrace. He prized interacting with people from his local community, and at times could be found enjoying a cup of coffee with the “gang at Ricky’s”. Many who knew Percy would remember him loving the game of golf, and after retirement he was often found at the driving range or tee’ing off at various golf courses within the lower mainland and Washington State. Percy had a green thumb and took great pleasure in gardening, devoting time to his yard and growing his own fruits and vegetables. This attributed to his healthy living and health conscious lifestyle. Percy was legendary for his home-made blackberry jam and canned salmon, which he would share with family and friends. A little known fun fact about Percy was that he taught himself the art of Japanese Bonsai pruning, which he skillfully used to transform outdoor shrubbery into living garden art, for all to enjoy and appreciate. Percy was a treasure of a human being ....a rare gem indeed. Humble, kind, caring, compassionate, an exemplary husband, a devoted father, an attentive grandfather, and a true friend to all who knew him. Percy unfortunately was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Alzheimer’s, which took him from us far too quickly. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, his daughters Lynn (Bunny), Janice (Drake), and granddaughters Leanna and Alanna. His sister Kathleen Aller and brothers Kenneth and Norman Holloway. Percy was predeceased by his cherished son Billy, age 19, who died tragically in a motor vehicle accident in 1978. Predeceasing Percy was also his sister, Patricia. Percy passed away peacefully with his wife, daughters, and granddaughters at his side. The family would like to acknowledge and thank all staff and management at Delta View Life Enrichment Centre, who provided Percy with a comfortable home away from home environment over the past year. Instead of a floral tribute, the family would like to ask you to honor and remember Percy by carrying out an unexpected and unsolicited random act of kindness where there is a need. Should you choose to remember Percy by making a donation to the charity of your choice in his memory, the family graciously appreciates your generosity and thoughtfulness. For all those who wish to pay their respects, a Visitation will be held for Percy on Sunday, February 12th, 2017 at the Delta Funeral Home in Ladner from 4 pm to 6 pm. A Memorial Service will be held for family privately.

It is with great sadness that the family of Bill May announces his sudden passing on February 3, 2017. He died quickly of a heart attack at his new home in the Comox Valley. Bill was survived by his wife Sheila of 46 years, his sons Greg and Dan, his daughter-in-law Lesley and his two adoring grandchildren. Bill was a mechanical engineer by profession. He established a life insurance company in Tsawwassen upon settling in the community and later transitioned into full-time commercial property management for the last several years, from which he retired in late 2016. Not one to stand by idly, Bill was quick to lend his time and expertise when needed, and it gave him great pleasure to bring a project to completion. Bill was a devoted father, grandfather and loving husband. He will be dearly missed. The family will be hosting a celebration of life service at South Delta Baptist Church on Friday, February 24th at 2:00pm.

TARIO, Cecile (Dutour) March 4, 1926 - February 1, 2017 It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Cecile Tario at her home on February 1. She was raised in St. Francis and McCreary, Manitoba. While working one summer in Victoria Beach, she met the love of her life, Morris Tario. They were together ever since. In 1949, they married and moved to Winnipeg to begin their life together. There they raised three children and lived a full life. They enjoyed many fun-filled times with family and friends in Winnipeg and at their cabin at Sandy Hook.
After Millie found herself on her own, she moved to Ladner to be close to family, and called Evergreen Lane home for many years. She was known for her love of cooking, and showed her care for others by preparing meals for her many friends at her complex and providing meals at McKee House. Millie also loved camping in here earlier days, and enjoyed planning the daily menus for the trips. Millie’s special friends helped make her last months more comfortable. Thank you to Harvey, George, Chucky, Christine, Andrea, and Vicky. Their visits and talks were very much appreciated. The family would like to thank Dr. Ruth Turnbull for her caring ways in the many years she had Millie as a patient. Thank you to the care workers and nurses at Kin Village for all the assistance and care they gave to Millie since she moved there last summer. There will be no service by request, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation. First Memorial - Fraser Heights 604-589-2559 14835 Fraser Hwy, Surrey

In 2009, Cec and Morris celebrated their 60th anniversary. Then, three years later, she lost her beloved Morris. A year later, she moved to Tsawwassen, BC to be near family and began a new chapter in her life. This included new friendships she developed at the Waterford where she resided, a cruise to Alaska and a trip to Las Vegas. She also enjoyed helping out at The Quilted Bear, where she still loved dealing with the customers.

WISEMAN, Millie Florence October 10, 1918 - February 2, 2017
Millie grew up on the family farm in Manitoba. In Gladstone, she ran a business of boarding construction workers in her home to make a living. Lawrence and Millie moved to Creston, BC, in 1962. They lived in many towns in BC, including Salmon Arm, Hope, Abbotsford, Ladysmith, Cedar, and Nanaimo.

Cec always worked in retail sales because she just loved dealing with people. She could sell them anything because she genuinely wanted them to love what they’d bought. She was never able to sit still and always had a project on the go, from knitting to crafts to quilting, and she created many beautiful items for all her family. Cec loved her card games, the casino, and cribbage. It was hard to beat her at cards. Another love of hers was curling, and she never missed a game.
Cremation has taken place in Vancouver, BC. There will be a Celebration of Cec’s Life on March 4th, her 91st Birthday, at 2:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Millie Wiseman in her 99th Year. Born in Westbourne, Manitoba, the youngest of many brothers and sisters, she was predeceased by her parents George and Mary Reshaur and her siblings. Millie’s beloved son, Glenn Douglas Cairns, passed in 1969. Millie was predeceased by husbands Sterling Cairns, Lawrence Burgoyne, and Dave Wiseman. Millie will be greatly missed by her Ladner family, daughter-in-law, Carol Burgoyne (Fred), grandchildren Sandy Kadyschuk (Dave) and David Burgoyne (Ann), four great grandchildren, and her niece in Manitoba, Elaine Cairns.
